Rossi companies were catalysts during pandemic As the CEO of Reditus Laboratories and other medical-related businesses in central Illinois, Rossi and his companies have been widely recognized for their innovative work and extensive assistance to the State of Illinois during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit last spring, Rossi transformed his companies to meet critical needs caused by the crisis. PAL Health Technologies, an orthotics manufacturer in Pekin, Ill., began producing face shields for medical personnel.

Reditus Laboratories, a Pekin-based pathology lab, pivoted to processing COVID-19 tests in partnership with the state of Illinois.

Levin said. “We have had very few Finance Directors in the City of Elmhurst and it is with heavy emotion that he departs after 32 years. We appreciate his longevity and outstanding level of service.”

After the meeting, there was a farewell reception held for Trosien in the lobby of City Hall.

This past June, Pekin Mayor and State Rep. Mark Luft (R-Pekin) recognized Rossi and Reditus Laboratories for their hard work, noting that the laboratory remains a critical part of local efforts to fight the pandemic.

“I am honored to be able to give back to the University that gave me so much and helped give me the discipline and drive go after my dreams,” Rossi said.

“We’re thrilled to accept this exciting gift from Dr. Rossi,” said Elmhurst University President Dr. Troy D. VanAken. “It speaks volumes not only about the powerful relationships Coach DiTomasso forges with his players, but also about how our students’ experiences at Elmhurst can influence and inspire them after they

graduate.”

Coach DiTomasso echoed Dr. VanAken’s comments.

“Relationships are the foundation for all successful people and Dr. Rossi truly cares about the success of our student athletes on and off the field,” he said. “As a founding member of the men’s soccer program at Elmhurst, he led the team in every way possible, from mentoring young players to eventually becoming a captain.

He and I have established a friendship that goes well beyond player/coach levels.”

The new video scoreboard is scheduled to be installed at Langhorst Field in 2022, when other major renovations to Langhorst are completed.

“Dr. Rossi’s specific monetary gift to men’s soccer will impact our program now and for years to come,” DiTomasso said.

“The addition of the Rossi Family scoreboard to Langhorst Field will be huge for the campus community as a whole. It will allow us to showcase our teams more effectively, generate new revenue streams, and bring a more exciting atmosphere to live events. I am truly grateful for his continued support.”

Caputo to enter Roll of Remembrance James E. Caputo, deceased May 11, 2021, a U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran, will be honored during the 1 p.m. honor guard ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 15, by having his name

placed in the Roll of Remembrance at the Veterans Memorial in Elmhurst’s Wilder Park.

Caputo entered the service July 27, 1964, attaining the rank of Special-

ist 4 and was discharged on July 22, 1966. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Expert (Rifle M014) and Sharpshooter (Pistol .45 Caliber).

EMH Foundation’s 17th Annual Autumn Affair Sept. 11 The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation’s 17th Annual Autumn Affair will be held Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago, 120 E. Glowiak Hilton to host document shred event in Elmhurst To provide residents with a secure option for shredding documents containing personal information, State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) is hosting an event in Elmhurst offering free, safe discarding services.

Shredding trucks will be available at York Commons park, located at 665 S. York Rd., from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. or until the trucks are full on Saturday, Aug. 21. A limit of two boxes of documents per car will be encouraged.

“Securely discarding vulnerable documents is a strong effort to protect yourself and your family from identity fraud,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Many of us have piles of old, unnecessary

documents cluttering our homes, and I encourage families to take advantage of this free community event to safely dispose unwanted papers containing personal information.”

Examples of documents with personally identifiable information that

should be safely discarded include bank statements, outdated medical records, tax returns, utility bills, junk mail, credit card applications and receipts.

Respected Illinois strategist, former White House aide dies Villa Park resident Dave Loveday began career with Reagan in 1980

“Oh yeah, Dave pulled me into that. Turned out really great.”

It’s an expression – along with many similar variations – that’s been heard throughout the circles of Illinois public service for more than four decades.

“Real and honest and fearless,” said Appellate Court Justice Joe Birkett. “He was a great friend, with one of the most talented minds and generous spirits of anyone I’ve had the honor to know. And there’s no question countless people in his life say the same. He never stopped fostering and bringing people together.”

David Loveday, 65, of Villa Park, passed away on July 3, 2021. He was a long-time strategist for a range of public officials and organizations in Illinois and nationally.

Through the years, Loveday applied his talents as an aide in the Reagan White House, a U.S. pointman in Africa helping save lives during the famines of the 1980s and a widely-respected advisor to agencies and campaigns empowering and uplifting people here and throughout the world.

A giving husband, father of three and brand-new grandfather, Loveday served his local communities as a volunteer fireman and president of the local hockey league, which he

played avidly for years.

“Dave was a mentor and advisor over the years to so many of us without reservation or hesitation,” said long-time friend Chris Hage. “With his high level of expertise and the quality of his level-headed advice, he could have commanded high-priced consulting fees whenever he spoke, but he clearly just enjoyed supporting the endeavors of his friends and helping us succeed.”

Loveday’s wide-ranging career in public service began when he was brought in as one of the earliest members of the Reagan Transition team in 1980. He later administered all U.S. federal disaster aid in Ethiopia and Sudan, traveling extensively in Africa. Loveday was also called on to work closely with senior officials in Mongolia and Iraq, advancing human rights and fair elections.

The Federal Home Loan Bank Board hired Loveday to play a central public role in resolving the Savings and Loan crisis in the 1980s.

Handling one of the most high-profile news stories of the decade, he oversaw all media relations to help assure Americans of the stability of the nation’s financial system.

“He had the most priceless and special brand of optimism around,” said John Hoffman, a close friend and colleague of almost 30 years.

“Dave immediately saw challenges and obstacles, then with his unflagging cheer motivated those around

Villa Park loses long-time business leader Odeum matriarch Phyllis Greco passes away at 95 Phyllis “MG” Greco, matriarch of the Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park, and many other area businesses, passed away on July 26, 2021 at the age of 95. She died at her home in Elmhurst, where she had lived for more than 60 years.

She was the beloved wife and business partner for 75 years to the late Emil Greco. She was the foundation of their family as mother, businessperson and a genuine leader.

She was born on July 1, 1926 and in 1950, married Emil “EG” Greco.

Phyllis was not only a loving companion to him for life, but also an irreplaceable partner in his unique endeavors, a valued collaborator and a constant stimulus for his creative energy. They were a superb team together.

In 1947, Phyllis and Emil started Greco Manufacturing Co., which evolved into PEP Industries, a fabricator of modern metal ecclesiastical designs and furnishings located in Villa Park. The company still flourishes today with the continued courses that Emil and Phyllis established.

Phyllis and Emil soon branched out into other areas, distributing Beringer Brothers altar wine; starting their own bank; owning a semi-professional hockey franchise, the Chicago Warriors of the USHL: and,

purchasing and developing hundreds of acres of real estate.

One of the greatest accomplishments was the design and construction of a sports complex “to keep kids off the streets.” As it is known today, the Odeum Expo Center hosts a variety of special events including concerts, indoor soccer, corporate events and public trade shows.

Phyllis and Emil together built their success with commitment and dedication, giving a valuable lesson in life to all who knew them, especially their four children, Patrick, Francine (Sis), Philip and Renee.

Phyllis was a wife, mother and best friend – a woman who taught the true meaning of love, family, friendship and life.

Another former colleague who had just entered the political world at the time recalled his warmth and kindness.

“Dave was the first one to greet

me at every event, and never let me stand alone,” said Jaime Elich. “Politics felt like high school all over again, and he was that awesome guy who was never going to let you eat at the lunch table alone. His smile was infectious and he had so much passion.”

Loveday held senior staff positions on more than ten statewide and national campaigns, oversaw public

relations and media for the second largest US transit system, and served as External Affairs Director for the second largest American tollway system.

“I just always think of his boyish grin and his eternal good humor,” said Scott McPherson, another friend and colleague. “He was a great tacti-

Harassment, threats

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Aug. 4 A victim in the 500 block of E. Park told police at 8:22 p.m. he received an electronic message telling him to wire cash or the unknown suspect would send out a pornographic video of the victim. The victim was advised to cease all contact with the suspect and to change his social media passwords.

Assault, battery Aug. 1 Michael Wright, 36, of Villa Park, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer near York and First at 7:41 p.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for the report of a subject refusing to leave.

The reporting officer met with the complainant who reported Wright was intoxicated and harassing customers, according to police. The reporting officer located Wright, who was allegedly intoxicated, bleeding from his arm and standing on the railroad tracks. Wright allegedly used his forearm to strike both of the officer’s hands.

July 29 Police said that subsequent to being admitted to Elmhurst Hospital at 6:42 p.m., the suspect struck the victim with a closed fist. There were no signs of injury and no complaints to be signed.

A victim near York and Diversey told police at 8:59 p.m. that while transporting the suspect, he got up from the cot, aggressively approached her and grabbed both of her wrists.

There were no signs of injury nor complaints to be signed.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Aug. 5 A victim in the 800 block of Cedar told police at 3:15 a.m. that an unknown suspect carrying a sledgehammer smashed the driver’s side windows of his Dodge Challenger. No access was gained to the vehicle.

Aug. 1-Aug. 2 Three incidents of complainants’ vehicles being egged were reported in the 100 block of N. Addison overnight.

Aug. 1 Police said a reporting officer met with the suspect who was found to have started a small fire at the above location. The fire was quickly extinguished and the suspect was cited for injuring property. The suspect was released on scene to his mother.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance Aug. 2 A 61-year-old Harvey woman was charged with domestic battery in the 400 block of N. York at 6:13 p.m. Police said the suspect struck a victim in the face.

A 39-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery in the 1-100 block of Astoria Court at 8 p.m. Police said the suspect struck a victim in the face several times. The victim sustained a scratch to his right cheek.

July 31 Police said a reporting officer met with a complainant in the 100 block of N. Glenview who reported at 2:34 a.m. the suspect became

July 30 Jaime Brown, 43, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct—false police report in the 500 block of N. Kenilworth at 11:53 a.m.

Police said a reporting officer met with the complainant who reported an unknown suspect damaged her vehicle while it was parked in the driveway. Upon further investigation, police said it was learned the complainant threw an object at her husband’s vehicle causing him to allegedly strike her vehicle.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, illegal possession of alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor Aug. 1 Police said a reporting officer attempted to make contact with a group of juveniles in the 100 block of W. Park at 9:34 p.m. A juvenile suspect fled from the reporting officer and was last seen running westbound through a parking lot near the above location. The suspect was later located and was found to have consumed alcohol while under the age of 21. The suspect was issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor, resisting a police officer and possession of tobacco by a minor, and was released to his father.

July 31 Matthew Kentra, 19; Robert Mendoza, 19; Jack Ray, 19; Grant Scaro, 20; and Zachary Wiygul, 19, all of Elmhurst, were issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor subsequent to a loud party complaint in the 300 block of S. Berkley at 12:10 a.m.

Oscar Vergara Gonzalez, 34, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and I-290 at 12:34 a.m.

July 30 Hector M. Aponte, 34, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and tinted windows subsequent to an investigation of a suspicious vehicle in the 500 block of W. North at 2:23 a.m.

Dylan McNish, 27, of Oakwood Hills, was charged with DUI-drugs and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at 7:29 a.m.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported two incidents of fleeing and eluding in which drivers of a vehicle or a motorcycle reportedly fled after a traffic stop was conducted.

Third at 2 a.m. A victim told police that she received a call from an unknown suspect claiming to be with the Social Security Office of Inspector General. The unknown suspect stated the victim’s information was used to rent a vehicle which was under investigation and a warrant was going to be issued for her arrest. The victim was instructed to purchase gift cards and to provide the card information to the unknown suspect. The victim sent a photo of the gift cards as well as personal records to the unknown suspect.

A reporting officer met with a victim in the 900 block of S. Kent at 8:05 a.m. who reported she was selling a pair of shoes online. The victim was contacted by an unknown suspect who stated he would pay an additional $100 if she shipped the pair of shoes to an address in Alabama. The victim then received an email requesting she transfer cash to activate a payment account. The victim transferred the cash and shipped the shoes but realized this was a scam after the unknown suspect requested additional currency.

Police report commercial burglaries at four car dealerships

Between Aug. 1 and Aug. 3, there were four incidents of commercial burglary reported — three at separate auto dealerships in the area.

Commercial burglary was reported at an auto dealership in the 700 block of W. Lake at 5:52 a.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for a report of an activation of a burglary alarm. Officers observed the southwest service door had been broken; however, nothing was taken. A key holder responded to the scene and reviewed video surveillance which showed a gray Dodge Durango pull up to the door and three suspect described as black males forcing entry to the service door. This case is pending investigation.

Another incident of commercial burglary was reported at an auto dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand at 6:07 a.m. Police said a reporting officer conducted a check of the above business after learning of a burglary at a nearby dealership. The reporting officer observed four suspects described as black males quickly exit the dealership and enter a gray Dodge Durango. The suspected vehicle fled from officers at a high rate of speed and was last seen traveling westbound on Grand Avenue. Upon further in-

spection it was discovered a glass window was broken out on the east service door and a vehicle was left running in the garage. This case is pending investigation.

The third incident of commercial burglary was reported at a business in the 900 block of S. Riverside at 5:38 a.m. A reporting officer met with the business owner who reported unknown suspects entered an unsecured gate and removed two landscaping vehicles containing several pieces of landscaping equipment.

Video surveillance showed three either white or Hispanic male suspects wearing masks and hoodies entering the property on the south side of the lot. This case is pending investigation.

Then, on Tuesday, Aug. 3, yet another commercial burglary was reported at an auto dealership in the 400 block of W. Lake at 6:07 a.m.

A reporting officer met with the complainant who reported an unknown suspect(s) forced entry into both buildings through the service garage. Surveillance video showed two suspects entering the buildings and tampering with vehicles. The suspects eventually took a vehicle from the rear used car lot and fled the scene.

In partnership with the Illinois State Treasurer’s office, state Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) is hosting an I-Cash event to help local residents claim their lost funds currently being held by the state. The event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 14 at Conroy’s district office, located at 28 S. Villa Ave. in Villa Park. Appointments are required between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and walk-ins will be accepted between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“Many Illinoisans are not aware that they have unclaimed property currently being held by the state,” Conroy said. “I’m hosting this free event at my district office to provide local residents with a quick and easy opportunity to find out if they have unclaimed property and to return those funds to those who are owed.”

Unemployment benefits identity theft

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported two incidents of identity theft with the intention of using a victim’s personal information to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Warrant arrest July 31 Police said that it was discovered Cristian Garcia, 24, of Elmhurst, had a warrant out of the Warren County Sheriff’s Office subsequent to a traffic stop in the 300 block of N Route 83 at 8:32 p.m. Garcia also was charged with driving while license suspended and speeding

identification. Common types of unclaimed property include bank accounts, insurance policies, consumer refunds, payroll checks and more.

Representatives from the Treasurer’s office will be on site at the event to check the I-Cash database, explain the process for claiming property and answer any questions.

“Each year, hundreds of thousands of new properties are added to the I-Cash program and one in four Illinois adults who search the database finds property to claim,” Conroy said. “I strongly encourage local residents to attend this event to learn if they have unclaimed property to recover.”

Mazzochi responds to Pritzker’s mask mandate In response to the Gov. Pritzker’s new mandate that all students, teachers, and staff at pre-kindergarten – 12th grade schools wear masks, regardless of vaccination status State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) released the following statement: “My district office has been flooded with calls of outrage about this latest mandate. Gov. Pritzker is once again not reasonably assessing the data; not following science; and proclaims he has unilateral executive powers that the legislature actually refused to give him. Reflecting the input of our districts, House Republicans voted against HB 2789 precisely because it gave the Governor and IDPH more unprecedented control over how schools operate on this issue. The Senate refused to even consider giving the governor and IDPH this much power over schools. If the governor thinks this power is genuinely necessary for public safety, he can call us into special session and justify it with real facts and evidence and in the light of full transparency. Then all of our stakeholders, particularly parents and local school boards, could have a voice in any outcome, and the democratic process of government can work. Instead, Gov. Pritz-

ker issued a mandate he knew many regions would find unacceptable, unnecessary, or flat out unworkable, and at his press conference threatened that the path of non-compliance (even with no bad outcomes) means school costs lost to litigation, insurance coverage put at risk, or even school decertification.

It is also quite telling that while Gov. Pritzker declares an immediate urgency for schools, he admits he will leisurely negotiate with the special interest unions he is relying on for his re-election campaign. Single-party rule in our state has created a government where regular people don’t count--only insiders do.

Finally, by exempting various groups from his latest round of mask mandates, Gov. Pritzker has already shown the state can’t apply a “one size fits all” approach; the same respect should be given to our local schools, parents and students.

Decisions must be guided by what the data reflects in individual communities. Discounting the input of parents, students, local government bodies and a wider panel of experts is undemocratic and simply wrongheaded.”

Glowiak Hilton law aims to protect survivors of human trafficking More survivors of violent crime will be able to keep their home addresses private as participants in the Illinois Address Confidentiality Program under a new law by State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) that expands protections for survivors of human trafficking.

“Violent crime survivors undergo substantial emotional and mental trauma,” Glowiak Hilton said.

“By adding human trafficking to the list of crimes protected by the ACP, we’re offering survivors some peace of mind that their sensitive personal information is safe and protected against abusers.”

Glowiak Hilton’s law strengthens the ACP managed by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office by allowing survivors of human trafficking to participate and keep their addresses private.

Originally, the ACP was established to protect the locations of domestic violence survivors. Last year, Glowiak Hilton passed a law expanding protections for survivors of sexual assault and stalking, and

she has now expanded the law to allow human trafficking survivors to opt in as well.

Currently, the ACP provides survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking and their household members with a substitute address to use in place of their actual home, school and work addresses in public records. This helps survivors prevent their former abusers from being able to locate them.

For example, the ACP substitute address can be used by participants when creating or updating public records, such as driver’s license or state-issued identification card.

“Expanding the ACP is an integral part of a safety plan for survivors to feel protected in their communities,” Glowiak Hilton said.

“This proposal works to ensure survivors have a sense of security to allow them to heal without fear of retaliation from their abusers.”

Senate Bill 593 goes into effect Jan. 1, 2022.

The older I get, the more I realize life isn’t always easy. Quite often it is far from easy. It is hard.

Or it can be.

So much is about perspective, yet sometimes we are so immersed in the chaos and disparity of life that we don’t give perspective to the whole much consideration. We feel like crap; how could that possibly change? How can it be any different from what it obviously is?

Many times, most times, it can change. The crap of life can become the caviar, or nearly so, depending on perspective.

How do we see ourselves, our circumstances and our lives?

Therein lies the key.

This morning I had a heart-toheart with myself. (I don’t often admit to talking to myself, but it’s key my existence right now. Hey, at least I can count on myself to listen!)

Anyway, me, myself and I were engaged in a deep discussion.

Those who read this column know I experienced a devastating loss less than a year ago. A loss so significant affects every aspect of your life. I wish it didn’t, but it does. Losing the half to your whole makes you question the very significance of everything.

What does anything mean or

Confronting his greatest challenge, Loveday was given an advanced cancer diagnosis within days of his first grandson Lincoln being born to Cate and her husband Patrick. Yet he kept up his positive mindset throughout, spending time with “Link” and his family and friends as much as possible and working even up to a week before he passed on.

When the time came to accept hospice, Loveday demonstrated the depth of his courage and character. He reached out to a friend to draft this notice. Though he had lost his speech, he then wrote simply: “I am ready.”

“He is my idol,” said Mary Jo Mikottis, a nurse practitioner who has known Loveday for many years

Sewing was Sue’s joy. Over the course of her lifetime, she made hundreds of pieces of clothing, quilts and fun items. The County’s annual budget survey is available online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/FY2022Budget or from the County’s homepage at www.dupageco.org and clicking on the budget survey link.

Each year, the DuPage County Board asks the residents to provide their thoughts pertaining to County

programs and spending priorities.

The information helps determine spending levels for the County’s various programs.

“As County Board members, it’s our job to be good stewards of the taxpayers’ dollars,” said Finance Committee Chairwoman Liz Chaplin. “This survey provides the County with valuable information as we make the difficult decisions required to shape our annual budget.”

The survey coincides with the regular budget process for Fiscal Year 2022, which begins on Dec. 1, 2021.

County Board Chairman Dan Cronin will present his FY2022 budget plan to the County Board on Sept. 28.

Lakeside Bank opens branch in Oakbrook Terrace

On Thursday, July 24, residents, business leaders and local elected officials gathered to enjoy food, drinks and musical entertainment, presented

by Lakeside Bank at its new Oakbrook Terrace branch at 18W076 22nd St. “It’s a beautiful bank and we [were looking] forward to showing it off,” said Alan Rose, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Lake-

side Bank, prior to the opening.

Among the dignitaries at the grand opening were Oakbrook Terrace City Manager Amy Marrero and Oakbrook Terrace City Aldermen Bob Rada and Charlie Barbari.

Hosting the event was Branch Manager Tara Nerko, vice president market manager and business banker at the new location.

Other representatives of Lakeside Bank in attendance were Dan Welz,

executive vice president and chief operating officer; David Pinkerton, president and vice chairman; and Board member George Papageorge Haymes.

Also on hand was Bruce Bronge, president of ICI Construction, the firm that built the building.

“It was a fantastic turnout, we had tons of clients come, which was extremely wonderful,” Nerko said after the event. “The whole City came out, the aldermen and other officials. Hon-

estly, we were so excited to be a part of Oakbrook Terrace, we’ve been waiting a long time for this to happen.”

Nerko said the bank was looking forward to getting involved in the community.

“We’ve joined the local Chamber of Commerce and we belong to MORE [a real estate organization] as well,” she said. “We re still getting our feet wet, but we’re getting to know the

community, we are arranging to meet and greet our business neighbors, introducing ourselves.

“Lakeside is a work in progress.”

Nerko said commercial real estate was their specialty.

“Our bread and butter is commercial real estate, but we can handle any kind of loan a customer may need,” she said. “We can beat the competition.”

Another of the ‘First Ladies of Elmhurst’ Virginia Knuepfer

(Reprinted with permission from The First Ladies of Elmhurst: Prominent Women of the Twentieth Century, the Independent has obtained permission from the Elmhurst History Museum to print stories from the book, published in 2001, recalling the outstanding women who have helped form our community. This week, we bring you Virginia Knuepfer. Some portions have been edited.)

Virginia “Dinny” (Maurer) Knuepfer (1920 – 2015) Virginia Knuepfer was still talking about her special birthday!

The celebration was a wonderful gathering of one hundred and fifty family members and friends.

“Can you believe I’m 80 years old?” Dinny said to me over the phone. Incredible, I thought. No one would have guessed her age.

I remember first meeting Virginia while televising the 1990 American Legion Citizen Recognition Ceremony. Virginia was the Guest of Honor and I was impressed by her numerous accomplishments.

Mayor Charles H. Garrigues, in celebration of her outstanding community efforts and many contributions to the city, proclaimed May 17, 1990 Virginia “Dinny” Knuepfer Day in Elmhurst. Virginia’s life was a whirlwind of activity then and continued that way!

Virginia was born in Chicago on Jan. 2, 1920. Her father Dr. Frank Maurer, a physician, and her mother Susan, a nurse, had two more children, Frank, Jr. and Barbara.

Raised in Oak Park, Virginia attended local schools and received a B.S. degree from the University of Illinois. In 1942 she married Paul Jordan and the young couple had one child. Shortly after that Virginia simply states, “I was a war widow in 1944.” She and her young son, Paul, managed to get through this most difficult time in their lives with the help and loving support of her family.

In 1948 Virginia wed Jack T. Knuepfer, a WWII veteran and fellow classmate from Oak Park High School with whom she had maintained a friendship. Virginia and Jack moved to 366 Highland Avenue in Elmhurst in 1950. They chose the community because of the good schools and close proximity to the family’s manufacturing business. Virginia had four more children, Claude (8/17/50), Mark (12/13/52), Barbara (1/26/58) and Suellyn (8/4/59). In 1959 the growing family moved to a larger new home at 901 Washington Street in

Virginia recalled that over the years, they had 22 foreign exchange students living with them at one time or another.

“We had a little United Nations all of our own!” she said.

Both Virginia and Jack became actively involved in Elmhurst. Jack pursued a political career serving one term as Alderman in the Second Ward (1957-59). He was elected Republican representative to the Illinois Legislature in 1964 and to the Illinois Senate in 1966.

He remained an effective leader in Springfield for eight more years.

Four years later Jack was persuaded to seek the Chairmanship of the DuPage County Board. In this elected position (1978-90) he was a dedicated and effective visionary who helped the sleepy county grow into the prosperous area it is today.

Virginia also embarked on a career of her own – as mother, political wife, activist, environmentalist, feminist, and fund-raiser.

When the Knuepfers first moved to the south end of Elmhurst, the neighborhood school was in the middle of a flood plain.

“Lincoln School was an island unto itself,” Virginia recalled. “We had a lot of coffees to get proper storm sewers.” Quick to move into action, she consistently supported her children’s schools and other issues and organizations dear to her heart. Virginia became an outstanding volunteer who contributed so much to the Elmhurst community. She was the recipient of many honors and earned every award she ever received.

For countless cancer survivors Virginia truly was a guardian angel. In 1978 a very dear friend of hers was diagnosed with the disease. Not knowing exactly how to help when her friend lost her hair, Virginia had an original idea. She created the Crowning Glory Hair Care Corner at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. Virginia gathered a group of friends and together, they volunteered to hand-make attractive, comfortable head-coverings.

Her boutique contributed bonnets, scarves and turbans to the oncology clinic. For so many women, the loss of their hair is as traumatic as the cancer itself. Virginia’s thoughtful and compassionate program comforted countless patients.

Other groups have benefited immensely from Virginia’s dedication and involvement. She served on the Board of Directors for the Elmhurst Fine Arts and Civic Foundation, the Elmhurst Garden Club, the Garden Clubs of Illinois, and the Illinois Foundation for the Handicapped.

She was one of the founders of the

Virginia also played a very important role as volunteer for over twenty years at the Ray Graham Association for People with Disabilities.

Whether behind the scenes or as chairman of an exciting event, she helped the organization succeed.

When the Ray Graham Association built the new Anna Emery Hanson Center for the Cultural Arts, Virginia was inspired to use her knowledge of horticulture.

By assisting the disabled students to grow and nurture plants, she brought beauty and accomplishment into their lives. For all her outstanding work and dedicated service Virginia Knuepfer was awarded special recognition in Washington, D.C. and presented with the Anna Emery Hanson Humanitarian Award in 1988.

In 1989 her leadership again was recognized when she was selected outstanding Woman of the Year by the DuPage YWCA. As a Christian woman, Virginia once said, “There are opportunities presented to you each day. We have a chance to make the world better.”

In 1953 the Knuepfers and five other couples embarked on a different type of campaign – a spiritual one.

With their good friend, Clarence Fralick, they sought other interested Christians who were willing to meet and organize with the intention of founding a new Presbyterian Church.

After years of energetic planning and fund-raising the Knuepfers, along with 145 charter members, were thankful when a beautiful house of worship was finally built.

Located at the southeast corner of St. Charles and Spring Road, the Elmhurst Presbyterian Church was dedicated in 1958.

In 1999 the Suzanne Knuepfer Guest House (named after Virgin-

ia’s sister-in-law) was established

by Metropolitan Family Services.

The purpose of the facility, located at 375 S. West Avenue in Elmhurst, was to provide care for senior adults. Virginia was quick to state that while she played no major role in the creation of the home, she wanted people to know that it was a wonderful resource for caregivers who needed respite help for their loved ones.

Virginia was also a board member of the Conservation Foundation whose headquarters is located in Du Page County. She and her fellow conservationists attempted to preserve open space, keep rivers clean, advocate for a network of trails, and educate citizens about the necessity of continuing to recycle. Volunteerism was a way of life for Virginia. In her own spirited way of working, she made a positive impact on Elmhurst and beyond. In her acceptance speech at the Citizen Recognition Ceremony I remember Virginia Knuepfer graciously saying, “I’m really overwhelmed and flattered beyond belief. I didn’t know who they were talking about. You all share in this limelight. Everybody here contributes to the welfare of our community…To be a volunteer you need a lot of support from your loved ones at home. It’s an essential ingredient for the success of any volunteer.

Jack has always been my strongest supporter. He’s encouraged me and inspired me to reach out to others just as he himself has always done...We have a shared social conscience, which I sometimes think is overdeveloped.” To a standing ovation Virginia concluded with a quote from Mother Teresa, “Unless life is lived for others, it’s not worthwhile.”

Virginia Kneupfer passed away in 2015 at the age of 95. Jack predeceased her in 2006 at the age of 85.

Established in 1931, the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst will commemorate its 90th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 23.

Over those nine decades, dedicated male and female Kiwanians have contributed to the well-being of the Elmhurst community by giving their time and financial support to score of charitable organizations, cultural entities and educational programs to the benefit of needy children and their families.

Held annually, Elmhurst’s two major fundraising events are Pancake Day, typically on Mother’s Day Saturday in May, and Peanut Day held in late September.

The 2021 Pancake Day and Mum Sale will be held in the Normandy

Banquet Room at Elmhurst American Legion THB Post 187 on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 6 to 11 a.m. This year, mums are being sold in lieu of the traditional Mother’s Day flowers and plants.

Pancake Day raises between $9,000 to $12,000 annually in funding to cover the cost of Kiwanis’ Food For Thought Program and other programs helping children in need.

The Club spends up to $2,000 per year to purchase some 500 in-school meals for those dealing with food insecurity, helping to eliminate hunger as a barrier to students’ learning.

Elmhurst Kiwanis is a member of Division 9 of the Illinois-Eastern Iowa (I-I) District of Kiwanis International. The I-I Districts clubs include Addison, Central DuPage, Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn, Lisle, Lombard, West Chicago and Wheaton.

York football team does quick summer turnaround Dukes looking to use spring season success as fall springboard

The York football team had little time to breathe this summer.

Coach Mike Fitzgerald’s squad came off a successful COVID-19forced spring season where it went 4-2 — York’s first winning football season in 10 years — and not too much later jumped right into its summer program.

“It was a quick turnaround,” said Fitzgerald, whose squad opened up 2021 fall practice Monday. “We had spring football and then we had to squeeze in some semblance of an offseason. It was a little different. Typically, you do more football stuff in June and then back off in July. With the success of the lacrosse team this spring, we had some guys who didn’t join us until mid-June. We lifted and did non-contact stuff in June and then in July it was more football and more contact. It’s a different dynamic not really having a football offseason.

From January to June is where you have those two classes come together. This year, we had a season end and then the kids are thrown together. It will be nice because we waited so long to get that one season going (this spring) and now we don’t have to wait too long for this one (2021 fall season). It will be nice.”

Fitzgerald liked what he saw this summer. “We have a really good blend of classes with the juniors and seniors. They complement each other well,” he said. “They have done a good job of connecting with each other and building relationships. We also had a lot of good competition for different spots and that made everybody better. We have a lot of people competing for spots.”

Fitzgerald also reported York’s participation numbers are strong this fall.

“We have good numbers,” he said.

“We are in the 70s for the varsity and have about 190 kids in the program.”

In addition to its usual summer camp work, York hit the road to Olivet Nazarene University for a three-day, two-night team camp.

“We had a lot of fun with the varsity group,” he said. “That camp helped build those connections. We got a lot done down there and gained a lot of experience, which is good as well. We are excited. The guys are preparing themselves well. They know it’s crit-

ical to get off to a good start with the way our schedule is set up. I liked the way they picked up the offense and defense. With the quick turnaround it is fresh in their minds. It’s a great group with some great momentum.

We had our first winning season in 10 years. There is a lot of excitement, momentum and confidence with this group.”

Fitzgerald noted in terms of experience, York has a good balance. “It’s a good mix of returning guys and some new guys vying for spots,” he said.

The coach has numerous reasons for excitement up and down the roster.

“The offensive line has four guys who got a lot of time last year,” he said.

“Our front six on defense got a ton of experience last year. With our skill positions we have some talented seniors and some up-and-coming juniors. We have a lot of good options in these spots.”

On that offensive line, Rowan Dagres and Luke D’Agostino are two key cogs. “They have done a very good job and we look forward to them leading us up front,” Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald added one unit in particular to keep an eye on is York’s linebacking crew that includes the likes of returning all-conference performer Jeff Coglianese in the middle, David Loch and Aidan Nawrocki. “Jeff is a fundamentally sound player who always is in the right place at the right time,” he said. “David had a really good off-season and Aidan contributed a lot last year and will play our SAM linebacker position. He has done a really good job.”

Nolan Korzeniowski and Everett Snyder will help York on the defensive line.

York opens the season at Schaumburg in a non-conference Week 1 game, and Fitzgerald isn’t shying away from talk of following up on the team’s winning spring season.

“For sure,” he said. “This group has huge momentum. They worked to get their first winning season in a long time and kids on this team were a part of accomplishing that. The goal that is still on the table is making the playoffs. These kids want to continue to win and get us back to the playoffs.”

Prior to this spring, York’s last winning season was in 2011 when it went 6-4 and made the state playoffs.

IHSA says masks back on for high school fall indoor sports Fall practices start this week

In response to another surge in COVID-19 positive cases in the state, last week Governor JB Pritzker announced an update to the Illinois Department of Health All-Sports Policy that will require masks to be worn for all indoor Illinois High School Association athletic events regardless of an individual’s vaccination status.

This mask directive, the IHSA noted, for indoor athletic events applies to student-athletes, coaches, officials, game personnel and fans.

The masking mandate applies to all IHSA fall sport practices and

contests conducted indoors, meaning girls volleyball and girls swimming and diving. Swimmers and divers do not have to wear masks while competing, but must adhere at all other times.

The masking also applies to any winter or spring IHSA sports that may be conducting open gyms, general conditioning or weightlifting indoors.

The IHSA added there are no restrictions to scheduling or spectator limitations as a result of the announcement, nor are there any changes to the IHSA calendar for any sports.

“Today’s announcement will not deter us from our mission of safely offering high school student-athletes in Illinois the opportunity to participate in sports and activities,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson

said in a statement. “Illinois high school student-athletes and coaches have been resilient in dealing with myriad mitigations and unexpected changes over the past year. We hope all Illinoisans do their part to stop the spread of COVID-19 so we can quickly move beyond this and remove masks from indoor athletic events.”

Police hold Neighborhood Roll Call

Throughout the summer, usually about twice a week, the Elmhurst Police Department holds its Neighborhood Roll Call events in various locations throughout the city, usually in residential areas. It’s a time when officers who are either coming off a shift or starting a new one can discuss the issues of the day. Coming into neighborhoods allows homeowners, especially families and kids to come outside, get to know law enforcement and ask questions.

On Thursday, Aug. 5, a Roll Call was held at Park Avenue and Huntington, led by Sgt. Mandat. In addition to 30 area neighbors, officers Schmidt, Aponte, Jaffe, Ostrega, Waldenmayer and Litton were on hand to talk with kids.

VFW Post 2801 Auxiliary plans outdoor market Sept. 25-26 Fundraising concert to take place on the evening of Sept. 25

The Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 Auxiliary is planning an outdoor market on Saturday, Sept. 25, and Sunday, Sept. 26. The market will be open each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside of the post, which is located at 39 E. St. Charles Road.

Interested vendors can send an email to vfwpost2801auxiliary@gmail.com for more information. Spaces can be reserved for $25. The

outdoor market is a major fundraiser that allows the post to continue its mission to help all veterans, their families and the community.

On the evening of Saturday, Sept. 25, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., the post auxiliary will hold a fundraising concert featuring the local classic rock band “Full Volume.”

The concert, which is open to the public, will include food, drinks and raffles.
