After over 100 years in business, Pioneer Garden and Feed will close this month Villa Park patrons bid farewell to a business that opened in 1918

A beloved Villa Park business that opened more than 100 years ago will close its doors this month.

Pioneer Garden and Feed, located at 118 S. Villa Ave., will close in the coming days. Villa Park residents Angie and Tony Rojek, who have owned the business since 2015, announced last week on social media that Pioneer Garden and Feed would soon close.

“It’s been an emotional last few days, quite honestly,” said Angie Rojek, who spoke on Friday morning while taking a brief break from working the store register. A steady stream of shoppers, some of whom have patronized the business for decades, visited Pioneer Garden and Feed in the days after the Rojeks made their announcement. Many of those shoppers offered kind words to the Rojeks and their employees.

“I did not expect the outpouring of love and support and a line out the door since we announced it,” said Rojek. “So almost everything’s gone at this point. We’re going to be closed on Sunday [Aug. 7], just to take a day. There are three floors here, so

there are still a lot of display items.

We’re going to take them down and put them for sale. But then, probably after that, that’s it.”

Rojek said she was touched by the kindness that Villa Park residents have shown since she and her husband made the Aug. 2 announcement that the business would be closing. That announcement related that all merchandise, except bird seed, would be sold at 50 percent off the regular price.

“Everybody has been so nice,” she said. “People are coming in and telling us their stories. People are bringing us gifts and donuts and pizza.

One girl made me this little card; I completely broke down.”

Business opened in 1918 Pioneer Garden and Feed opened in 1918, four years after the village, then known as Ardmore, was incorporated. The village’s name was changed to Villa Park in 1917.

“The business opened in 1918; the original part of the building is still here,” said Rojek. “It’s been added

Ethan graduated from Willowbrook in 2018. A plaque on the south side of the business notes that Pascal Skemp purchased the land and began running the Villa Park Feed and Milling Company from Pioneer’s current location in 1918. In the early years, the store sold chicken feed and fertilizer to local farms and fruit orchards. “It’s an institution in Villa Park,” said Villa Park Village President Nick Cuzzone of Pioneer Garden and Feed. “We’re definitely going to miss it.” Angie Rojek stated last week that she couldn’t yet announce who bought the property. She said the buyer will be making an announcement soon. She did say the 104-year-old building would come down. “It will no longer be Pioneer—I can say that,” she said.

“It won’t be a feed store anymore.”

EWAN celebrates 25 years helping the community The Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network recently held its 25th birthday celebration, having served the community of Elmhurst by filling all kinds of emergency needs. Held in the parking lot of St. Peter’s UCC where the EWAN offices are located,

about 50 guests enjoyed ice cream provided by Kilwins in downtown Elmhurst, and live music provided

by Cary Kanno, as well as a chance to win a prize by answering two EWAN-specific trivia questions.

The first question was, how many

services has EWAN provided since its founding 25 years ago? The answer is 19,100. The second question was, how many dollars in assistance has EWAN provided? That answer is $1,575,918. The names of the winners were not available at press time.

At the event, someone quipped, “Where are the ribs?” a nod to EWAN’s upcoming ‘Cue for a Cause grilling (and baking) competition scheduled for Labor Day Weekend.

Assault Aug. 2 A victim in Fellows Court reported at 8:50 a.m. he was talking with his work supervisor about complaints against him. During the talk, the supervisor allegedly pushed the victim.

The supervisor admitted to patting the victim on the shoulder, but in no way was it malicious. The victim was advised he may bring charges against the suspect on his own through the state’s attorney’s office.

Disturbance, domestic incident, domestic battery, disorderly conduct Aug. 2 Francisco J. Garcia, 26, of Melrose Park, was issued a citation for open alcohol on a public way in the 600 block of W. North at 8:10 p.m. Police said the suspect was observed riding a skateboard while holding and drinking a can covered in a paper bag.

Aug. 1 A 42-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with three counts of domestic battery in the 700 block of N. Michigan at 10:09 p.m.

Police said the suspect began hitting both victims subsequent to a verbal argument.

July 28 A 42-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 100 block of N. Addison at 3:44 a.m. A victim told police that subsequent to a verbal argument, the suspect struck her.

Andre D. Griffin, 35, of Peoria, was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, unlawful possession of cannabis, possession of open alcohol and no insurance in the 800 block of Poplar at 4:54 a.m. Police said Griffin also was found to have two warrants out of Peoria County.

Melissa A. Ogrodny, 34, of Elmwood Park, was charged with DUI and three counts of endangering the life of a child in the 100 block of Myrtle at 5:42 p.m.

Austin Taylor, 35, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis, possession of open alcohol and improper lighting subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Lake at 1 a.m.

July 31 Matthew Jensen, 35, of Oakbrook Terrace, was charged with DUI, expired registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Commonwealth and Butterfield at 8:11 p.m.

July 30 Thomas Tibbetts, 28, of Addison, was charged with DUI, possession of open alcohol, possession of cannabis in a vehicle and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at 10:30 p.m.

Fleeing, eluding

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported two incidents of fleeing and eluding during which the driver of a vehicle fled the scene after being stopped for a traffic stop by police.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, po-

July 27-Aug. 2 Attempted fraud was reported in the 500 block of W. Lorraine. A complainant posted on Facebook Market Place a bed frame he was trying to sell. He was contacted by an unknown suspect who sent a check for $2,650 to include moving and shipping costs. The complainant deposited the check and was notified by his bank that the check was fraudulent.

Aug. 1 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at 7:35 p.m. A complainant related two male suspects exited the store with two cases of beer for which they did not pay.

An investigation is pending.

Identity theft was reported in Elm Creek Drive at 11:29 p.m. A victim reports that an

unknown person(s) accessed her online Domino’s account and ordered food items. The victim contacted her bank and will be reimbursed.

July 29-Aug. 1 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83. A reporting officer met with loss prevention who reported reviewing surveillance footage which showed the suspects passed the final point of purchase with three vacuums. This case is pending investigation.

July 30 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of Addison at 11:13 a.m. One victim reports a gym bag was missing from his vehicle. Another victim reports his wallet was stolen from his vehicle and he later found fraudulent charges on one of his credit cards.

July 29 Residential burglary was reported in the 300 block of E. Van Buren at 1:17 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect entered their residence and removed a laptop, checks, and other items. A check was later discovered to have been written. This case is pending investigation.

July 28 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at 9:03 p.m. A complainant related two suspects stole multiple vacuum cleaners and other merchandise and exited the store without paying. An investigation is pending.

Residential burglary was reported in the 600 block of Oaklawn at 3:02 p.m. A victim told police that the suspects, both described as white males in their 50s, approached his property, stated they were with ComED and wanted to speak about trimming the victim’s trees near the power lines. Upon the suspects’ departure, the victim found a safe and jewelry missing from his home. An investigation is pending.

Attempted identity theft was reported in the 300 block of Huntington at 4:12 p.m. A victim reported an unknown suspect(s) attempted to open a credit card account using her personal information.

July 19 Theft was reported at a business in the 100 block of W. First at 10:40 a.m. A victim reports an unknown suspect(s) removed a cash register from the business. The victim stated he had packaged the cash register to return it. The cash register was placed by the door waiting to be mailed back. An investigation is pending.

Theft of catalytic converters

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported six incidents of catalytic converters being removed and stolen from a vehicle at the following locations: in the 400 block of W. Fullerton sometime between July 19 and July 27; in the parking lot of Elmhurst Hospital at 6:09 p.m. July 28; in the 600 block of W. Lake sometime between July, 2020 and Aug. 1; in the 600 block of W. North at 4:52 p.m. Aug. 2; in the 400 block of W. Butterfield at 5:53 p.m.

Aug. 3; and in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at 10:26 p.m. Aug. 2.

Elmhurst siblings with Chesney’s ‘No Shoes Reefs’ find eco-friendly watershed moment John Wanzung and Michelle Kennedy were born and raised in Elmhurst, but you wouldn’t have seen much of them during the summer months. Rather, you’d find them in upstate New York at the family’s Adirondack camp amidst sandbars and sleeping bags, enjoying lake life with their parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and really anyone who wanted to dangle their feet from a dock. Bonded by what the siblings say was the best part of their childhood, their love of the lake has bubbled over into a journey that has landed them a partnership with Kenny Chesney’s No Shoes Reefs.

Chesney is a popular country music singer and songwriter who has recorded more than 20 albums and has produced more than 40 Top 10 singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Song charts, 32 of which have reached #1. He followed his interest in ocean, lake and wildlife conservation and founded No Shoes Reefs. (There is a website at NoShoesReefs. org, but it is currently under construction.)

“Now, decades later, we bond with our own children, extended family and friends each time we connect at the same lake waters we splashed around in when we were kids,” said Kennedy. “John and I know so many people who have stories of their own lake lives and who are concerned about our environment and the sustainability of our lakes.

We started talking about how we could make a

difference, and Barefoot Bay was born.”

Barefoot Bay created a line of online apparel that simply features custom shapes of lakes around the country as requested by its online clientele.

Twenty-five percent of each purchase is donated to various lake and wildlife associations that support the same conservation mission. Chesney’s No Shoes Reefs grassroots initiative supports awareness and preservation of ocean habitats and joined forces with Barefoot Bay to help preserve and protect freshwater lakes and waterways for generations to come.

Barefoot Bay apparel uses sustainable material made from recycled plastic bottles and donates 25 percent of apparel sales to No Shoes Reefs or individual lake associations.

Hello, friends

This column is about friends.

Before writing it, I thought to myself, ‘I wonder if there is an official Friends Day?’ So I did the Google.

Turns out there is an International Friendship Day. It is July 30.

Guess which day I did this particular Google? Yep. July 30. I took it as a sign.

There are no coincidences when it comes to serendipity—or friends.

Apparently I’m supposed to write about friendships this week. It’s a lovely topic because I’ve been surrounded by friends of all types throughout my lifetime (so far).

To my old friends who have been around for it all: You will never be old in my eyes (or heart.) Thank you for staying by my side throughout the years. You’ve seen me at my best and my worst and you’ve accepted both. For that, I love you.

We all have those friends who seem to stay in our lives throughout love, loss, youth and the decades beyond.

They are beyond worth. Acknowledge them as such. Hug abundantly.

To old friends who have emerged from the past: I am so thankful for you. You knew me then and you’ve stepped forward to know me now and that feels so much more than generous on your part.

I’m glad we have reconnected. It feels new and old in the best of ways.

Hello, again! I’m glad we’re growing again, together.

To new friends: I appreciate you more than you know. You are willing to take a chance on me, an unknown weirdo, in the name of friendship. You are willing to invest the time and energy it takes to do that, especially with someone who has the baggage I carry. You well know about my baggage and still offer me grace and acceptance. Both gifts I don’t deserve, but am so grateful to you for offering.

am glad we met. You have supported me in ways only those of us in the club can. I hope I return the favor.

Our bond is one we never wanted, but it is real just the same. Our losses have brought us together and cemented relationships that others may not understand. But we do, and that is all that matters.

To my family: Beyond blood, you are some of my best friends. I love you and am so grateful for you. You are my rocks. You’ve lost, just as I have lost, and still we hold one another up. If that isn’t miraculous, I don’t know what is. You are the greatest gift your dad and our dad and mom ever gave me.

Finally, to old friends who will always feel like new friends because they are my best friends: You know who you are. You were the people I called in my most dire days because I knew you would listen.

You were the ones who called me when you knew I was hurting because you wanted to listen. You were there for me because you love me and that will never, not ever, be overlooked or forgotten.

This year, July 30 was officially International Friendship Day, but we all know we don’t need a special day to appreciate friends. Quite the opposite.

We can celebrate them every day.

Every moment. Today, I celebrate mine. All of them. All of you.

America has lost its way

By Jim Nowlan America has lost its way, or so I worry. Can we get back on track?

What do we mean by The American Way? Each of us might define it differently, though I think there are some common threads.

In 1937, social commentator William Herberg gave it a shot in a lengthy paragraph, from which I extract here some key words: self-reliant, striving, success, humanitarian, idealistic, stewardship, character.

America helped save the globe during World War II, with our sacrifice and materiel. When I grew up post-WWII, America was on top.

The rest of the developed world was prostrate from war devastation. We had some swagger. We were positive and generous. It was a great time to grow up.

I thought of America as perfect, though we weren’t. After all, blacks were still being casually lynched in the South, and until this year, Congress hadn’t been able to pass a simple anti-lynching law.

Since my childhood, other nations have been catching up with us, as would be expected of energetic, well-educated, emerging nations. We also lost some of the kick in our step with our failure in Vietnam.

In the 1970-80s, we allowed our manufacturing base to be hollowed out. And we can’t seem to climb up from mediocrity in educational achievement. This may not have been important when I was a kid, but is now. Our university and government-sponsored research have been top drawer, yet China is investing

much more in its rapidly developing research centers and universities (they know where the future lies!) than are we.

Nor can we seem to resolve our “us v. them” squabbles among whites, blacks and browns; elites v. rural folks, and regarding gender roles.

Further, luxury has a corrosive effect on the spirit, I would contend, possibly weakening our resilience as a people. On my three visits to China as a visiting professor over the past 15 years, I found that the Chinese are not that impressed with us, maybe agreeing with their supreme leader Xi Jinping that Americans have become soft.

Then, we have the mind-bending, unsettling, warp speed rate of change in our world, with digital devices pushing the human aside, or threatening to do so. And, of course, the pandemic. And now, medieval bestiality in Ukraine, which I had hoped, naively, we had evolved away from in the 21st century.

So, we have little swagger left.

Where are we? Where are we headed?

Many of my senior generation appear to have given up, taking their still fertile brains to Florida and the links. The political class on the Left appears to think the way out of our plight, if such we be in, is to shower us with government money. On the Right, the objective appears to be to protect the incredible wealth being scooped up by a tiny fraction of us.

From what I see among my former university students, our well-educated young are buoyant with energy and optimism, which is great. At 81, I think my generation, with its immense aggregate wealth, needs to do a better job of supporting my former

students, and our grandchildren.

I have cynically mused that the U.S. could use a “good little war” to unite us in behalf of a renewal, an awakening. We have such a little war in progress in the Ukraine, plus an economic war with China. In the Middle Ages, war was economic development; today economic development is “war.”

This can be seen by China’s efforts to extend its sphere of dominant influence, from Southeast Asia to Africa.

Yet most Americans are so consumed with our pursuit of material stuff that we are blithely ignorant of what is transpiring in the world beyond our border.

If anything, The American Way has been about success, achievement, stability, example. These are the really big issues that aspiring national leaders should be trumpeting to the American public. Yet, I fear many socalled leaders fear such declarations would fail to capture voter imagination and spirit, and so they tap into voter fears and anger. One of the downsides of democracy is that, to stay in office, leaders often become followers.

I smile when I see the bumper stickers: “Ask me how much I love my grandkids!” How much, indeed?

Enough to provide them a stable nation and world? If we can do that, we will have reclaimed The American Way. Local artist exhibit held at Elmhurst Art Museum

Kiwanis brings monarch waystation to community The Elmhurst Kiwanis has teamed up with the Elmhurst Park District to create a monarch butterfly way station at Kiwanis Park located at 451 E Madison. Kiwanis members will be planting host and nectar plants along with an EPD horticulturalist on Tuesday, Sept.

13 at 8 a.m.

Hosted by the Elmhurst Kiwanis, the project has become even more important as the monarch was recently added to the endangered species list.

The main threats to the migratory monarch are habitat loss, pesticide and herbicide use, drought, and climate change. The migratory monarch weighs less than a gram but performs one of the most amazing journeys in the animal kingdom.

Each year, migratory monarchs travel from wintering grounds in Mexico and California to breeding grounds in Canada and the northern United States. The migration can stretch up to 2,485 miles (4,000 kilometers) and a full cycle takes

months. Butterflies hatch in the U.S. and Canada in summer and head south before cold weather hits.

The migrating butterflies then head north, breeding along the way. It takes several generations to make this return journey, and it’s usually the great-grandchildren of the first generation that arrive back at the northernmost point of the migration.

Kiwanis Park Monarch waystation will be implemented in three stages. The first stage will include host plants. Milkweed is what monarchs lay their eggs on and it is the sole food for the developing caterpillars. Nectar plants provide food for the fully developed butterflies.

By choosing native plants that are drought resistant Kiwanis Park will be successful to attract monarch butterflies.

Blind self-defense instructor holds classes in the area Jim Turk began losing his sight when he was 28 years old from a complication of diabetes called diabetic retinopathy.

Five years later, he was completely blind.

With the many changes this caused in his life, Turk found himself feeling less secure traveling and being alone in public. So, he took up self-defense.

“It made such a big difference that I decided I wanted to start teaching it to other people,” Turk said. “I learned more and more, and eventually started teaching mostly to blind people.”

Turk is a blue belt in jiu-jitsu and is certified in 1Touch self-defense—a comprehensive program designed specifically for people who are blind or visually impaired. He travels around the country to schools and rehab centers to teach self-defense classes not only to blind and visually impaired people, but to anyone.

Turk, a Villa Park resident, has been holding self-defense classes at Joe’s Dojo in Villa Park as well. Sensei Joe Garvey, owner of Joe’s Dojo, met Turk through mutual friends. They first met to play Magic: The Gathering—a tabletop and digital collectible card game.

“We ended up practicing on the Dojo floor in between playing cards, and figured out that we have a very similar need to help others,” Garvey said. “We have a harmonious relationship learning from each other.”

Garvey started learning self-defense when he was 13 with Sensei Steve, who originally owned Sensei Steve’s Karate Center, which is now Joe’s Dojo.

“I was bullied a lot, I moved from town to town, I had a newly divorced family, and I was going through a lot of depression and stuff,” Garvey said.

“So I found karate for me as an outlet to change a lot of the negative into positive. It wasn’t like I had to fight anyone to get better. I just had to be treated like an adult and know how to control my anger.”

Garvey said that he has learned a lot from Turk’s style of teaching self-defense.

“The way (Turk) teaches his jiu jitsu is different from any other jiu jitsu person I’ve ever worked with because they use their sight primarily,” Garvey said. “Whereas he has so many points of contact on your body that he knows exactly where your weight is, he knows where your arms are, he knows where your head is. And it gives him a completely different teaching style. It’s so cool.”

Turk also has an advantage over sighted people because he can “hear 365 degrees around him,” according to Garvey.

For example, if a sighted person heard a door close behind them, they would turn their head, whereas Turk would have just as much focus on that sound without having to turn his head, said Garvey.

“They talk about how the great masters of karate go blindfold or use their other senses, but most of the time you think of it as a joke … I’m like, ‘Well, my friend Jim does’...” Garvey said.

“You have to be at a higher level of awareness to really figure out what’s

going on around you.”

When Turk started teaching blind people, he realized that traditional self-defense responses like punch and kick combinations are sometimes not practical.

“What I did was I started looking up statistics on what kind of assaults blind people face,” Turk said. “They tend to be up-close, grabbing kinds of assaults.

I went down the list and started coming up with responses to these scenarios rather than trying to do punch and kick combinations.”

Self-defense for anyone Turk said his style of self-defense can be used by individuals other than blind people, as well.

“Because of the nature of them (the techniques), they apply to not just blind people but pretty much anyone who is seen as an easier target,” Turk said. “If they have a visible disability, if they have a small stature or if they’re a woman.”

Turk and Garvey both brought up self-defense techniques that can be helpful for blind people who do not want to harm someone, but rather make them uncomfortable enough to stay away. This is sometimes necessary when strangers unprovokedly touch blind people in an effort to “help.”

“People see us out in public and assume that we must need help,” Turk said. “Often, they’ll come and grab hold of us without saying a word, and lead us off into some MIKE SANDROLINI PHOTO Elmhurst Independent direction. There are certain techniques blind people can use in these situations.

“If I have somebody grab me by the wrist, my natural reaction is to use my other hand to punch the person,” Garvey said. “Jim’s natural reaction is to grab the thumb of the person that’s grabbing him and twist it in a way that they let go.”

Turk also has several recommendations and tips for not just blind people, but for anyone who wants to defend themselves.

“I focus on things that, no matter how big and beefy someone is, they’re going to respond the same way,” Turk said. “Jamming your thumb in someone’s eye. The groin is a fantastic place to hit. And I always tell people, too, that the fingers are really easy to break … You can be really strong up and down your Established in 1982 arms, and your fingers are still easy to break.”

“Along with more than 20 fellow Illinois chamber of commerce executives (and members of their staff), I participated in the Association of Chamber of Commerce Ex- John Quigley ecutives (ACCE) Annual Convention at the JW Marriott in downtown Indianapolis from July 26-29—our first in-person gathering since 2019 in Long Beach in southern California prior to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic. Some 400 of the 1,400 strong in attendance were first-time attendees relatively new to our chamber world.”

Highland Park strong “In the wake of the Fourth of July Parade shootings in the Village of Highland Park, our Chamber is the first of what I expect to be many Chicagoland area chambers to become a dues-paying member of the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce, given that charitable funds are already established to assist the victims and their families, and effected downtown businesses.

“Additionally, I happily covered some traveling expenses so that Highland Park Chamber President and CEO Ginny Glasner could attend the ACCE Convention as my driving companion.

“Erin Jason, the City of Elmhurst’s former Business Development Manager, was involved in Highland Park’s July 4 Parade as the Village’s Assistant City Manager and the training she received while part of our City’s administration proved beneficial in her new role.

Jason’s successor, Heather Bereckis, formerly of the Village of Hinsdale, started her new role in Elmhurst on July 26 and I am planning to meet with her for the first time later this week.”

New Teachers Welcome For more than three decades, ECCI members have welcomed thousands of teachers new to Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 as part of those educators’ annual orientation sessions.

During the 2022 luncheon at District 205’s new teacher orientation at York Community High School on August 9, Quigley will deliver a welcome speech and show a business promotion video before Chamber staffers hand out new teacher greeter totes filled with goodies donated by Chamber members.

“Veteran teachers coming to Elmhurst from other school districts, whether in Illinois and out of state, of-

ten remark about how welcoming our community is,” Quigley said.

The annual demographic of new teachers regularly includes those who attended public school in Elmhurst, from kindergarten through elementary school, middle school and York, along with a number of Elmhurst University graduates, and even sons and daughters of Chamber members.

In response to the Coronavirus Pandemic, District 205 restaged its new teacher orientation at York starting in 2020, when some 50 Chamber members delivered a video welcome via Zoom.

For 29 years dating back to 1991 when started by then ECCI President A.J. “Toche” Terrones, sponsoring Chamber members treated teachers new to Elmhurst’s public and private schools to a tasty banquet lunch and one-on-one conversation—a welcoming practice long-since imitated by many other area chambers of commerce. Post lunch, new teachers were formally introduced to luncheon attendees by their Chamber sponsors.

Over those years, new teachers also took a tour of the Elmhurst community on buses or trolleys, with the Quigley among the business leaders providing current info and historical perspective.

Sen. Glowiak Hilton, Assessor Wilkins to host property tax appeal seminar

To help residents understand their property tax bills and offer assessment information, State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton is partnering with York Township Assessor Deanna Wilkins to bring services to the Oak Brook Public Library.

“Many homeowners pay property taxes but might not have the opportunity to understand the assessment appeal process,” said Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs). “My office is partnering with York Township Assessor Deanna Wilkins to get families the information they need to explore ways to reduce their property taxes.”

The event is scheduled to be held at the Oak Brook Public Library on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 5 p.m. The library is located at 600 Oak Brook Road.

Attendees will get information on property tax bills, the assessment appeal process, the reassessment cycle and more.

West Nile Virus activity in DuPage County Prompts health advisory An increase in mosquito samples throughout the county testing positive for West Nile virus (WNV) has the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) reminding residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites and the risk of contracting WNV. The key factors in determining the degree of West Nile Virus activity are temperatures and rainfall. In hot, dry weather, mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus (primarily Culex mosquitoes) breed in areas with stagnant water, such as street catch basins, ditches, birdbaths, flowerpots, and buckets, where the mosquitoes multiply rapidly.

“As people spend more time outdoors enjoying the end of summer, DCHD is reminding everyone to protect yourself and your family from mosquitoes and West Nile virus,” said Karen Ayala, Health Department Executive Director.

Goddard’s program will examine the history of five iconic Chicago foods and their relationship to the city’s patterns of immigration, creativity and cultural traditions that led to their storied fame. Her interest in the subject has been developing over many years.

“I’ve always been interested in food history, partly because it’s a fun topic but also because it really tells us a lot of about a region’s history,” Goddard said. “In writing my book, Chicago’s Sweet Candy History, and researching a video I put together a few years ago on the history of Italian beef, I got interested in the history of local foods and what they tell us about the Chicago area’s history, economy and values. “ “This talk is an extension of that earlier research,” she continued. “I take a look at deep-dish pizza, the Chicago-style hot dog, Italian beef, Frango mints and Eli’s cheesecake — and ask, why did these foods in particular become iconic for Chicagoans? What traditions do they represent, and what do they tell us about the Chicagoland area?”

The governor’s office said the proclamation will aid in moving vaccines to the most impacted communities and will allow the Illinois Department of Public Health to expand vaccine and testing capacities with the help of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and state and federal funds.

The World Health Organization declared monkeypox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern last week, and Illinois has reported 520 cases thus far, according to the governor’s office. The disease, believed to spread through close contact, can cause a variety of symptoms, the most visible being a painful or itchy rash.

With 85 percent of the cases in

Chicago as of the week of July 2430, the city had received 18,707 vaccine doses while the state had received 7,371, sending 4,631 of them to Chicago. Another 13,000 additional state doses are expected from the federal government “in the near future,” according to the governor’s office.

The IDPH warned in a news release that vaccine demand was “outstripping supplies.” The department advised local public health officials that “unless people are in certain elevated risk categories, they should receive only an initial dose of the MPV vaccine until more supplies become available.”

While the vaccine received by Illinois, manufactured by JYNNEOS, is directed to be received in two doses at least 28 days apart, the IDPH directive will likely mean that the second dose is not received on that timetable.

According to the CDC, monkeypox symptoms can include head-

ache, fever, respiratory symptoms, muscle aches, chills and exhaustion. But the most visible symptom is a rash that may be located on the face, mouth, hands, feet, chest, genitals or other areas. Most people who contract monkeypox will get the rash, which can look like pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy. The rash goes through several stages, including scabs, before healing, per the CDC. The disease spreads through close, personal contact, such as skin-to-skin contact, direct contact with the monkeypox rash or through the bodily fluids of an infected person, according to the CDC. It can also be spread by touching objects, fabrics and surfaces that have been used by someone with monkeypox.

The CDC also states the disease can spread through sexual contact, hugging, kissing, massages and through touching fabrics or objects during sex that have not been disinfected after use by someone with monkeypox.

Elmhurst Aquatics water polo club sends five teams to Junior Olympics

18U and 16U boys team reach national title games

In a short period of time, the Elmhurst Aquatics water polo club has made a huge impact. Started in June 2021 after the heart of the pandemic, Elmhurst Aquatics is the result of a merger between the Elmhurst Swim Team and Elmhurst Water Polo, which created an all-inclusive aquatics program that also includes diving.

Elmhurst Aquatics offers water polo, swimming, and diving for all levels — beginner through experienced.

Elmhurst Aquatics recently sent five teams to the national Junior Olympics competition. Elmhurst had teams competing at 18U boys, 18U girls, 16U boys, 14U boys and 14U girls. The tournament was held in Dallas July 27-31 with clubs from all over the country competing. Junior Olympics is the main annual event hosted by USA Water Polo. Most teams play seven or eight games at the event. The first two days allow teams to play into one of two divisions. The Platinum division is the higher division with the Gold division comprising the teams that did not qualify for Platinum.

The highlight for Elmhurst in the 18U tournament was a shootout victory over Southside from Houston, which eventually took third in Platinum. Shootouts are the best-of-five alternating shots between the two tied teams. Goalie Jack Schroeder blocked Southside’s first three shooters, and Charlie McKenna, Gavin Honken (double rostered at 18U and 16U) and Cale Koester all connected on their shots to solidify the win. Top scorers for Elmhurst were Aidan Allamian and Koester, while Matthew Skwiot, Tyson Berg and Schroeder were the statistical defensive leaders in the tournament.

The Elmhurst 16U boys came in as a No. 25 overall seed and also went 6-0 to bring an unblemished record into the title game.

“It’s our last season,” Tyrrell said.

“That’s going to be a major change.

Obviously, the history and level of competition in the Chicago Catholic League is significant. It’s one of the premier conferences in the state. We will have to step up our game, but we are up for the challenge.”

In terms of the 2022-2023 schedule, York will play at IC Catholic Prep for the first time during Tyrrell’s tenure as head coach. The teams have traditionally played at York. “It’s a really fun game for the community,” Tyrrell said. “It’s really fun and it’s usually really well attended.”

The Knights added Chicago Hope Academy and Marmion Academy to the schedule this season.

“It looks like we have 31 games, the most you can have,” Tyrrell said.

“It’s going to be a busy season. Our conference stayed the same with us being the Blue Division. It’s always a good challenge to play in the upper division of the Metro. Johnson, along with Matthew Karsten, saw action as sophomores on the varsity last year. “Aiden was up on the varsity last year as a sophomore,” Tyrrell noted. “He can play multiple positions for us and does a really nice job finishing at the rim. We expect a breakout year from him as well. He will play a key role on the varsity.

Matthew played up on varsity and also played on the sophomore team.

He’s an outside shooting threat for us, playing the point guard position. He’s a good chance-of-pace guy. I love that we have guys where no one is similar.

They all have different strengths and skill sets. It’s cool as a coach to be able to utilize various talents when making decisions that will keep opposing teams off-balance.”

Andrew Hill also saw varsity action as a freshman last year. “Andrew is a big up-and-comer who will play key minutes. He has made outstanding progression,” Tyrrell explained. “We brought him up the last few weeks and we usually don’t bring up freshmen.

He is a bright spot for this program going forward. He’s 6-5 and can play inside or can shoot the 3 or can finish high at the rim. He gives us some nice size that we can always utilize. He will eat up key minutes for us this year.

We have a lot of guys working hard at their craft and we are seeing all the results.”

Baseball memories Elmhurst Extreme 12U traveled to “Cooperstown Dreams Park” the week of July 16 in New York. The Extreme beat Wisconsin, California and Michigan in an exciting week of baseball. This great group of players hit 17 home runs, collected pins from teams throughout the United States and Canada, and enjoyed visiting the National Baseball Hall of Fame. It was a memorable week for not only the players but their many supporters.

The Rojeks, who have lived in Villa Park for more than 25 years, have sold the Pioneer Garden and Feed business and its property. Angie Rojek said on Friday that she and her husband weren’t yet allowed to say the buyer. She did mention that the buyer will be making an announcement soon, and that the sale is not connected to the planned development of about 220 apartments at the nearby site at 100-110 S. Villa Ave. “It will no longer be Pioneer—I can say that,” stated Rojek, who said the business’s building will come down. “It won’t be a feed store anymore.”

The Aug. 2 announcement noting Pioneer Garden and Feed’s impending closure cited rising costs and supply chain problems, along with big box and online competition, as some of the reasons for the closing.

ested in selling the business, which had been in his family for decades.

His father, John Leston, began running Pioneer Garden and Feed in 1965.

“Neither of us had been in retail before,” said Rojek. “I was a video producer. Tony was a video editor.

We lived in town. We’re gardeners.

We shopped here, and we had been wanting a change. We had been looking to do something different.

This kind of fell in our lap.”

Rojek noted that she and her husband took the business over during the spring—Pioneer’s busiest time of the year.

“We did not know what we were getting into, because April is when it really starts to pick up,” she said.

“Mother’s Day is like our Super Bowl. The whole year revolves around Mother’s Day, basically.”

Family thanks employees; ‘This was a hard decision’ Rojek said the business included about 15 employees during its recent spring seasons. The Rojeks’ announcement offered special thanks to Bill Karges for his many years of employment at Pioneer and his ser-

vice to Villa Park. The Rojeks also thanked another Pioneer employee—Maggie Krott—who has been with them since they bought the business.

“A lot of local kids have worked here; it’s a great first job,” added Rojek on Friday. “People learn a lot being here, and it’s a friendly place.”

Rojek referred to the deep connection that many village residents have with the business, which has been their longtime go-to store for flowers, plants and several other garden-related items.

“It means a lot to people,” said Rojek of Pioneer Garden and Feed.

“People live in Villa Park for a long time. People stay, and their families stay. That’s one of the really wonderful things about it.”

As a business that offered pet and agricultural supplies, Pioneer Garden and Feed was considered an essential business, so it never closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After offering curbside service for the first few weeks of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, the business was able to re-open its doors to its customers on May 1 of that year.

“I’ll never forget May 1 [2020], when we could open the doors again,” said Rojek. “There was a line around the building. I’ve never experienced anything like that, until these last few days. The pandemic brought out the gardeners, so that part of it was actually really good for business.”

Rojek emphasized how she and her husband carefully considered their decision to close the business and sell the property, which is locat-

ed on the west side of Villa Avenue, just south of the Great Western Trail.

“I think that’s what I guess I’d want people to know the most—we did not take this lightly,” Rojek said.

“This was a hard decision.”

Rojek repeated that there were a number of factors contributing to the end of Pioneer’s 104-year history of selling a wide range of garden-related items and other supplies.

“It’s everything that all the small businesses are going through right now,” she said. “People keep asking where they should go now. What I would like to say is wherever you go, go to the little guys. Go to other small garden centers. They need you. The little people need support.”

Rojek noted that she and her husband will continue to live in Villa Park, and that they will remain active in the community. She also said she will soon have a little more time to work in her own yard, which was one of the stops in the Garden Club of Villa Park’s Garden Walk a few years ago.

“We feel privileged and glad we were here,” Rojek said. “We kept it here seven years longer than it would have been.”
