Elmhurst Swim Team wins 51 medals at regional championship

The Elmhurst Swim Team was selected for the first time in its 26year history to be a host of the 2017 Summer Regional Swim Championships. The team co-hosted with the West Chicago Sharks swim team on July 21-23 at the York High School pool. More than 700 swimmers from 25 different swim clubs throughout the state of Illinois participated in the event. EST had 21 qualified swimmers in the event. See more details in sports.

Visioning Workshop to be held on Elmhurst Sub-Area Plans The City of Elmhurst is excited to begin the process to update the Elmhurst Sub-area Plans, and is looking for input from residents, community stakeholders, businesses, property owners and other interested members of the community. An Open House Visioning Workshop will be held on Aug. 29 from 7-9 p.m. at City Hall.

Taking to the sky

The skies were alive with kite stunts during the Elmhurst Park District’s annual Kite Fest held August 5 at Berens Park in Elmhurst. Some of the midwest’s best professional kite flyers entertained with kite stunts and tricks. Kids were able to learn kite building first-hand. The first 200 kids received free kites.

State Representative Patti Bellock (R-Hinsdale) announced today that she will not seek re-election to the Illinois General Assembly in 2018.

She will continue to focus on serving her constituents and continuing her work on improving access to quality health care for every Illinois family and strengthening the safety net for the state’s most vulnerable residents until the completion of her current term in January 2019.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve my community in the Illinois General Assembly,” Rep. Bellock said. “I would like to thank my family, friends and the residents of my district for their support over the years and to all those who suggested ideas for legislation that we were able to enact into public policy together.

Making a positive difference in the lives of others has been the greatest reward in this job. Next year will be time to give someone else the opportunity to serve our community in the Illinois House of Representatives.

Until then, I look forward to continuing to work with my constituents and my colleagues to make progress on many important issues until the end of my term in January 2019.”

Representative Bellock became the first woman in Illinois history to serve as Deputy Leader of a legislative caucus when she was appointed Deputy House Minority Leader in 2013, a position she continues to hold.

Her landmark legislation –the SMART Act reforming the Illinois Medicaid system and bills requiring mental health parity, MRSA infection control, grant transparency and reform, improving the Amber Alert system and strengthening child support in Illinois have been recognized on a national level. Currently Bellock serves as a budget negotiator for the House Republicans, Minority spokeswoman for the House Human

The IC Catholic Prep football program will host a fantasy football training camp with Matt Bowen on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 7-10 p.m., at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Elmhurst.

The event will be led by ESPN analyst and former football player Bowen, who is an assistant coach on the IC Catholic Prep football staff. IC Catholic Prep is the defending Class 3A state champion.

Bowen will help attendees prepare for the 2017 fantasy drafts with detailed player breakdowns, rankings and projections. Along with a unique insider’s look at NFL playbooks and schemes, Bowen will answer questions and provide feedback to help build a championship fantasy football season, the school said.

Tickets are $100 per person and includes a buffet-style dinner and an open bar.

There also will be two raffle drawings at the event. One raffle winner will receive a custom IC Catholic Prep bags set and a second winner will receive a YETI Tundra 75 cooler. Winners must be present to win.

Proceeds from the event go toward the funding of IC Catholic Prep football and other IC Catholic Prep athletic programs.

IRS phone scams spike in Illinois ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK The Better Business Bureau is warning of a recent spike in phone scam attempts across Illinois.

Steve Bernas, president and CEO of Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois, says this is a long-running operation in which people pose as IRS agents and demand immediate payment.

“Normally, people will wise up and not send money,” Bernas said.

“That’s how scams go out of business. But this one has taken on a life of its own and keeps growing.”

A clear sign of a scam call is the request for money sent in a short amount of time.

“If you have to pay money immediately, that day, right away, nobody does that to you,” Bernas said. “The IRS is not going to call you and tell you that you have 30 minutes to pay. The only thing you should pay within 30 minutes is a pizza delivery man. Anybody asking for money in 30 minutes is 110 percent a scam.”

Callers also might inform victims

that an arrest warrant has been issued due to attempted tax fraud. Bernas says the scammers are skilled at convincing victims of harsh consequences if they don’t comply.

“I have people calling me from all walks of life,” Bernas said. “I had a reporter call me. I had a reporter’s mother call me. It’s so real to them that they think it’s truly the IRS.” According to the Better Business Bureau, the IRS does not make phone calls to issue threats about payments. They also make multiple contact attempts via mail before resorting to any other method of communication.

Bernas also says you can’t simply trust your Caller ID to alert you to a suspicious number.

“Most consumers don’t know Caller IDs can be altered with a simple program that can be found online for about $20. It’s spoofing.”

The Better Business Bureau asks you to report all scam phone calls to www.bbb.org, whether successful or not.

In an effort to save lives by reducing fatal and serious-injury crashes, the Elmhurst Police Department continues to take part in a year-long grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) that provides funding for additional enforcement of DUI and seatbelt laws. As part of the grant, periodic roadside safety checkpoints will be set up throughout the year.

On Saturday August 12th, a roadside safety checkpoint will take place

on a major roadway in Elmhurst. The safety checkpoint will begin at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night and continue until 3:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

During the safety checkpoint, vehicles will be stopped at a predetermined interval and checked for violations. Roadside safety checkpoints have proven to be a significant deterrent to impaired driving. As always, motorists are encouraged to drive carefully, to buckle up, and to avoid drinking when driving.

Kartwheels for Kids to raise money for hungry children Roadside safety checkpoint planned for the weekend For the fourth year in a row, a group of Elmhurst middle and high school girls present Kartwheels for Kids – their fundraising effort to raise money to feed hungry children. Feeling very blessed for all that they have, they wanted to give back by helping less fortunate children. CeCe Lampa, Katelyn Leonard, Grace Maniola, Martha Miklyukh, Maryalice Shockey and Emma Wheatland, have spent a big part of their past four summer vacations planning their K4K events.

This event centers on gymnastic type contests. It has grown to include events such as hockey, golf, basketball and soccer. Those attending the event enjoy an afternoon of contests, baked goods, raffle prizes and other fun activities while supporting a worthy cause.

The girls have raised over $12,000 and have provided daily healthy after-school snacks for approximately 200 children.

The girls will be hosting their event for kids of all ages at a new location this year on Sunday, August 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. on the block of 630 Sunnyside Ave., Elmhurst. All are welcome! They will have activities such as basketball, hockey, gymnastics, soccer and golf with first, second and third place prizes for 3 age groups. Veteran Keich to join Roll of Remembrance

John P. Keich, deceased April 6, 2013, a U.S. Army veteran, will be honored during the 1 p.m. honor guard ceremony this Sunday, Aug. 13 by having his name placed in the Roll of Remembrance at the Veterans Memorial in Elmhurst’s Wilder Park.

Keich entered the service in 1946, attaining the rank of Private First Class and was discharged on Sept. 7, 1948. He received the Good Conduct Medal, other awards and decorations are unknown.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Battery

Aug. 1 A victim near Mitchell and the Prairie Path told police at around 5:39 p.m. that he was supposed to meet the suspect at Pioneer Park. The victim’s right eye was red and swollen and he claimed to have been battered by the suspect’s associate. An investigation is pending.

July 31 Officers responded to the Elmhurst Library for a report of a fight in progress at around 2:17 p.m. Upon arrival, Juvenile 1 was still on scene, while Juvenile 2 fled on foot and was located at Wilder Park. Both suspects had agreed via text messages to meet at the library to engage in a fight. Both were released to their parents with the condition of attending Peer Jury.

July 30 Officers responded to the report of a fight in the street near Spring and Butterfield at around 12:10 a.m. Upon arrival, a victim told police she was trying to break up an argument between some of her friends when she was pushed to the ground by a suspect. The victim did not have any injuries and the victim’s mother did not wish to pursue complaints against the suspect.

July 29 Gybran Payan-Carrete, 23, of Addison, was charged with battery near Route 83 and North at around 2:58 p.m. Police said a victim related that while stopped at the light at Route 83 and North, Payan-Carrete exited his vehicle and attempted to punch him through the open driver’s side window. The suspect then punched the victim, striking him in the right eye, according to police. Contact was made with Payan-Carrete and he was subsequently placed under arrest.

July 27 A Metra train employee advised officers at around 4:30 p.m. that a juvenile victim reported being the victim of a sexual abuse and battery while riding on the commuter train as a passenger from Chicago. Both the victim and suspect were detained and transported to the Elmhurst Police Department. Union Pacific Railroad police responded to investigate the incident.

Aug. 2 A victim in the 300 block of E. First St. told police at around 12:52 p.m. that while cleaning her car she heard a loud noise. As she went around her vehicle, she noticed a quarter-sized crack in the vehicle’s windshield. The victim suspects a rock was kicked up at the windshield from a passing truck or vehicle, due to

July 30 Police said Donna Kegler, 55, of Elmhurst, was reported to be falling down in the roadway and unable to get up. Upon arrival, officers determined she was intoxicated and unable to care for herself, according to police. She was issued a citation for disorderly conduct.

Domestic incident, domestic battery

Aug. 1 A victim in the 200 block of E. Wilson St. told police at around 11:41 p.m., the suspect had pulled her down in the yard near his residence, while asking her to leave his property.

The suspect denied making physical contact with the victim, who did not wish to sign complaints, but wanted the incident documented.

July 31 A victim in the 400 block of W. Vallette told police at around 2:23 p.m. that the suspect (her son) became upset, used foul language, and put her in a headlock. The victim advised she did not want him arrested. The suspect had fled the scene but eventually returned and his father agreed to pick him up.

A complainant told police at around 8:25 p.m. that an argument turned physical when the suspect allegedly “choked” the victim. The victim then reportedly kneed the suspect in the groin. Family shelter services was notified of the incident.

July 30 Police said that while Addison medics were transporting a patient near North and Route 83 at around 2:34 p.m., the medics observed a suspected domestic dispute inside a moving vehicle. A female passenger appeared to be hitting the male driver, according to police. The vehicle was stopped and it was determined that during a verbal argument, the female passenger was flailing her arms about. There was no physical contact by either party. There were no signs of injuries and both parties were released from the scene.

July 29 A complainant in the 800 block of N. Van Auken told police at around 12:20 p.m. that he called police due to a heated argument he was having with the suspect, and did not want the situation to escalate. There was no physical contact made between them, only verbal. The complainant agreed to leave the residence so the suspect would be able to move her belongings out without incident.

Aug. 2 Police said an off-duty officer reported that James Lapinski, 49, of Oak Brook, had

July 31 Marko Gvozdenovic, 36, of Lyons, was charged with DUI in the 100 block of S. York at around 3:23 a.m.

July 30 Juarez Goodrich, 60, of Crockett, Texas, was charged with DUI and illegal transportation of open alcohol subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at around 2:16 a.m.

July 29 Martin Lopez-Garcia, 33, of Arlington Heights, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Grand at around 4:07 a.m. Police said an inventory search of the vehicle yielded one open, partially full can and one unopened can of beer.

July 28 Joshua Bucens, 20, of Milford, Mass., was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, disorderly conduct-public intoxication and possession of a fraudulent ID in the 200 block of W. First at around 2:03 a.m.

July 31 Police said an officer observed a motorcycle traveling 85 mph in a 30 mph zone near North and Indiana at around 4:01 p.m. and stopped the vehicle for speeding. The driver, Davoud Rouei, 34, of Skokie, was charged with speeding 35 mph or more over posted speed limit, violation of driver’s license classification- motorcycle and no insurance.

Aug. 2 A victim in the 200 block of S. Berkley Ave. told police at around 11 a.m. that she received a sexually explicit text message on her phone from an unknown person. An investigation is pending.

July 27 A victim in the 600 block of N. Indiana told police at around 5:47 p.m. that she has been receiving messages and having conversations

July 15 A victim in the 600 block of W. St. Charles told police at around 930 p.m. that the suspect is a regular customer at a restaurant where she works. She stated he has been sending unsolicited lewd pictures and has asked him to stop.

He has continued to send them and while at the bar he appears angry when she serves other male customers. The suspect was contacted and told to have no further contact with the victim. He was also advised not to return to the bar and will be served a trespass notice.

July 28 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Palmer and Schiller at around 8:37 p.m.

Michael Rodriguez, 21, of Schiller Park, provided an officer with a false name and date of birth. He was charged with obstructing identification, driving while license suspended and speeding.

Aug. 1 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at around 8:56 a.m., a strong odor of cannabis was emitting from the vehicle. According to police, Alexus Marie Gomez, 24, of Chicago, admitted to possessing a “one hitter,” and a glass smoking pipe was recovered from under the driver’s seat.

Gomez was cited for speeding, possession of cannabis less than 10 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia.

July 29 Adarelis Guijarro-Salgado, 20, of Des Plaines, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, improper display of registration, no valid driver’s license and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 4:03 p.m.

Police said Guijarro-Salgado was fond to be in possession of a plastic bag which contained 1 gram of cocaine. Irvin Negrete, 21, of Des Plaines, a passenger in the vehicle, was cited for possession of cannabis.

Crockett at around 10:25 a.m. She yelled at them, and the suspects took off with an unknown item in their hands. The suspects placed the item in their vehicle and drove away.

August 3, 1946, Grace married the late George Ellery Potter and began their life together in Pennsylvania before settling and raising their two sons in Elmhurst, Illinois.

Survived by her loving and devoted son, Mark (Janis) Potter, she was preceded in death by her oldest son, George E. Potter III. She is fondly remembered as a Grandmother to Adam Potter, Cathy Potter (Dennis) Purnell, Jennifer Potter (Adam) Martinez and G. W. Potter, and a great grandmother to Bryanna, Lillian, Devin, Miranda, Mateo, Miquel and Marissa. Grace was a special aunt to Jack Harper and the late Nancy (Harper) Rich.

home. The victim stated she opened her front door and placed the keys down on the concrete ledge next to the door. She later realized her keys were missing and suspects a solicitor that came earlier may have taken them. The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 5-8 with a slender build, wearing a red baseball cap, blue jeans, a black shirt, and a backpack. The victim changed all the locks on the residence and secured her vehicle in the garage.

July 30 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 8:20 p.m., the vehicle was found to be reported stolen out of Hobart, Ind. All the suspects were taken into custody. Numerous items of stolen merchandise were recovered from inside the vehicle, according to police. Jeffery Barnes Jr., 20, of Chicago, was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, no valid driver’s license and disobeying a traffic control device. Chalonda Kelly, 20, of Chicago, was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and retail theft, and was found to be wanted out of DuPage County. Alexis Kelly, 34, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft. Sameria Stokes, 18, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft and criminal trespass to a vehicle.

July 29 While on patrol near North and Willow at around 1:07 a.m. officers observed a vehicle, a blue 1999 Honda Accord, driving erratically westbound near North and Willow. Upon conducting a LEADS/SOS inquiry it was learned the vehicle was reported stolen out of Chicago on July 28. The vehicle was stopped and all suspects were taken into custody. Suspects 1and 2 were cited for possession of cannabis and released to parents.

Suspects 3 and 4 were charged with possession of a stolen auto and transported to Kane County Juvenile Detention Center.

Police said that subsequent to a call for a customer dispute at a pharmacy in the 100 block of N. Palmer at around 12:45 p.m., a suspect was found to have removed an unknown number of items from the store and

was a beauty consultant to many.

Later in her career, she was a legal secretary for several years to Pete Bates in Elmhurst, and she prided herself on her detailed accuracy with no reliance on computers or adding machines. Upon her retirement, her love of travel took her to such enchanting places as Greece, Turkey, and Mexico, but her most cherished destination was always spending time with her sister, Doris, in Pennsylvania. When not traveling, Grace looked forward to her gourmet food and bridge clubs, where she was the ultimate hostess welcoming her guests with laughter and good cheer, relishing in her circle of friendships.

She thoroughly enjoyed retirement and maintained close relationships with her family and friends.

Upon the death of her husband,

George, in 2002, Grace remained in Elmhurst before moving to Naperville where she lived independently for the last several years. She boldly, courageously and honorably carried on her life when moving into memory care, even as this insidious disease robbed her of her cherished memories and stole her from those she held dear. Grace is remembered as a loving and caring mother, mother-inlaw, grandma, aunt, and dear friend who devoted herself to others. She will be missed by all.

The family wishes to express its most heartfelt thanks to the nurses and special staff at Alden Memory Care in Aurora whose tenderness and compassion these last weeks will not be forgotten.

National Friendship Day is August 6, but in my opinion every day should be a day to celebrate friends and the different types of friendships we have in our lives. From best friends all the way to acquaintances, I know I value mine.

Let’s start with old friends because they’re the ones we found first. They’ve been around the block with us and our relationship has stood the test of time. Old friends love you despite that awkward stage you went through in high school when they, most likely, were going through an awkward stage of their own. Old friends are comfort, familiarity and enduring. They are meatloaf with mashed potatoes, green beans and white bread. Old friends are the best.

Some friends are more recent finds: new friends. They bring the potential for new possibilities and possess characteristics that draw you to them, and vice versa. New friends don’t know your baggage and they don’t need to know about

Friendship isn’t always forever.

Friends come and go. They (or you) leave a job or school or the neighborhood. Lives change and your relationship fades. Sometimes they (or you) return. This leads us to the category of re-discovered friends: folks we used to know, but lost track of and then managed to reconnect with again. Social media has increased the popularity and prevalence of renewed friendships. In the olden days, you’d have to go to a class reunion to reconnect with high school buddies. Now all it takes is a click of a mouse. Old friends who become new again may have less hair and more waistline from what you remember but their essence and heart are mostly and thankfully unchanged. You find you can pick up with them right where you left off years or decades earlier. Re-found friends are like a secret stash of good chocolate you forgot you hid until you found it behind a bag of flour in the pantry. In that regard, re-discov-

ered friends are the best.

Not all friends are human. Often, a person’s best friend comes complete with four paws and a tail. Pet friends are just as real as human friends. When we’re happy, they’re happy. When we’re sad, they’re pretty sure it’s their fault. Besides treats, us coming home to see them is one of their favorite times of the day. They lick us because they love us. Pet friends are chicken and steak and bacon. Lots and lots of bacon.

Pet friends are the best.

Speaking of best, I’ve saved them for last. Best friends. They can be old or new, live next door or across the globe and I don’t think you have to have just one. Maybe a better phrase would be best of friends. Bonus life points if you are married to one of yours. Besties know your favorite song and flavor of ice cream.

They may be just like you, or a total opposite. You may talk to them five times a day or five times a year.

Best friends are all your favorite foods, at one sitting, including dessert (which comes without calories).

York Township honors United States Army Veteran Lloyd Couch served in the United States Army from March 26, 1954 until January 10, 1956

U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), the seniormost Democrat on the Senate Subcommittee tasked with ensuring access to clean drinking water and helping prevent lead poisoning, recently introduced a new bill to prevent the closure of any regional Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) office and protect thousands of jobs across the country.

Her legislation, the Recognizing the Environmental Gains in Overcoming Negligence (REGION) Act, was introduced following reports that President Trump’s budget proposal would gut the EPA and force several regional offices to shutter, including the Region 5 office in Chicago where 1,000 dedicated employees work to protect our environment and the health and safety of Americans living in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

“The EPA’s regional offices—and their thousands of hardworking public servants—are critical when it comes to improving public health and safeguarding the environment,” said Duckworth. “Shuttering them and slashing EPA resources would jeopardize the livelihood and safety of communities in Illinois and across the country. I’m introducing my new REGION Act to protect Illinois jobs and ensure these offices can remain open to provide the protections we rely on—whether or not the president thinks protecting our children from lead poisoning and toxic air is important.”

Duckworth’s REGION Act is cosponsored by Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Citing lessons learned from the Flint water crisis, Duckworth led several colleagues in writing to EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt in early May urging Pruitt to commit that none of the agency’s regional offices be closed or consolidated.

During Pruitt’s confirmation hearing, Duckworth pressed the nominee on the importance of these regional offices as well as the importance of appointing a permanent leader to head the EPA Region 5.

Duckworth also got Pruitt to agree about the need to empower the dedicated men and women who serve in EPA Region 5 in the aftermath of Flint, Mich., to act

proactively when a state fails to protect its citizens.

“I was deeply concerned by the reports that the Administration planned to abolish EPA regional offices,” said Durbin. “Especially for Illinoisans and the six Great Lakes states that the EPA Region 5 office serves, that office is critical to protecting the air, drinking water and health of its residents. Closing its headquarters in Chicago would make EPA less effective and efficient in its efforts to protect the environment and human health. I’m proud to support Sen. Duckworth in introducing this vital bill and will continue to work with my colleagues to protect EPA regional offices across the country.”

“The men and women at EPA’s regional offices are the front lines of environmental protection,” said Sen. The EPA’s regional offices enforce Federal pollution standards, inspect local facilities and serve as a resource for state environmental entities. The senator met with EPA Region 5 staffers in Chicago earlier this year to discuss the critical work they do to protect the health and safety of Americans living in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

A 2008 Brookings Institution report shows that every $1 invested in Great Lakes restoration results in a $2 return in the form of increased fishing, tourism and home values. The Great Lakes contain 95 percent of America’s fresh surface water and supply drinking water to more than 30 million people in North America.

Couch’s time of service began in Camp Chaffee at Fort Smith, Arkansas with 8 weeks of basic training and 8 more weeks of field wire training (Combat Telephone Service). After his training was completed, he was flown to Hoboken, New Jersey and placed on a troop ship to Bremerhaven, Germany where he disembarked and was moved on to Neckarsulm near Heilbronn, Germany which was a lovely mountainous area covered with grape vineyards.

Within two weeks his whole unit moved north by truck convoy to Hanau near Frankfort, Germany, where Couch remained until he was discharged from service.

His new unit did not need a “field wireman” so they re-trained him to be a Chart Operator in the Headquarters Battery of a self– propelled Artillery Unit. The Chart Operator was part of a 5 man team with a Sergeant and an officer.

Couch’s team was the fire direction control over 3 bat-teries of six self– propelled 155mm howitzers (Artillery). Their job was to pinpoint the enemy target one round at a time until they made a hit, then all 18 howitzers fired on that same target.

“Thank God, it was all practice and not combat,” Couch said. “We were the peace keepers after World War II closed. We also kept Russia from taking over West Germany.” “I could have been sent to Korea, which was hot with war. I could have been sent to Alaska, which was very cold. I was

Bond set at $1 million for Blue Island teen accused of armed robbery in Villa Park DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Acting Chief of Police Michael Lay announced on July 28 that a Blue Island teenager has been arrested and charged with robbing a Villa Park 7-11 store at gunpoint on July 20. The teenager allegedly stole Illinois Lottery scratch-off tickets and approximately $200 cash.

Cameron Love, 19, appeared in bond court on July 28. His bond was set at $1 million, with 10 percent to apply in accordance with a previously issued arrest warrant.

Love has been charged with one count of armed robbery with a firearm, a Class X felony, and one misdemeanor count of battery.

According to information provided by the state’s attorney’s of-

fice, Love and an unnamed accomplice entered the 7-11 store at 54 S. Villa Ave. at 5:09 a.m. on July 20.

Once inside the store, Love and his accomplice allegedly stole Il- Cameron Love linois scratch-off lottery tickets and approximately $200. It is further alleged that before fleeing the store, Love ordered the store clerk to lay on the floor and that both Love and his accomplice kicked the store clerk in the face.

An investigation by the Villa Park Police Department led to Love. On July 24, a $1 million ar-

rest warrant was issued for Love, who was arrested and taken into custody on July 28.

“I would like to thank the Villa Park Police Department for their fine work in identifying and apprehending Mr. Love as a suspect in this case,” Berlin said in a statement. “The allegations in this case, that Mr. Love stole money at gunpoint and kicked a man in the face who was just trying to make an honest living, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Claudia Fantauzzo for her efforts on this case as well.”

“Unfortunately, this type of violence is exhibited by many criminals in today’s society,” added Villa Park Detective Sgt. William Lyons.

“The Villa Park police detectives worked continuously, beginning from the initial response, to ensure the offenders are brought to justice.

This is an outstanding example of a cooperative investigation by multiple agencies within DuPage County.”

Love’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 21, in front of Judge John Kinsella.

The statement from the state’s attorney’s office reminded the public that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Elmhurst Junior Women’s Club donates $13,000 to EMH Foundation for cancer services The Elmhurst Junior Women’s Club recently donated more than $13,000 to the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation to support breast health services at the Nancy W. Knowles Cancer Center.

Every other year, the Women’s Club makes a donation to the Foundation based on proceeds from its “Tickled Pink” breast cancer awareness fundraiser. This year’s event, held on May 5, featured a marketplace with more than 25 vendors with a variety of items for sale, including purses, scarves and accessories, stationery and custom announcements, jewelry, garden art, children’s art, books, furniture and accessories, gourmet foods, and makeup and skin care products.

Founded in 1980, the EMH Foundation offers many giving opportunities and annual special events designed to support the hospital’s programs and facilities, including the Autumn Affair, Hope Lives Here Luncheon, Chef Fest, Reindeer Route Housewalk and Love Lights program. Elmhurst artist, Wes Baker, to exhibit paintings of iconic American images The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild is pleased to announce, “American Images”, an exhibition featuring the paintings of Wesley R. Baker, to be held in the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild Gallery in the Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 Cottage Hill Ave., Elmhurst.

The exhibition will run from August 13 to September 22. The public is invited to meet the artist at the free opening reception on Friday, August 18, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The exhibition will feature a diverse collection of abstract iconic American images, ranging from motorcycles and landscapes to Civil War and Native American themes, exploring current and historical political issues.

Baker’s style tends toward abstract representational. Artistic inspiration has come from two centuries of sources, ranging from 19th Century impressionists to 20th Century symbolist and abstract painters like Gustav Klimt, Franz Kline, and Chicago Imagist, Ed Paschke. Kline’s influence is clearly visible in “Jake’s Bikes”, employing broad splashes of blue and white that evokes the motion of roaring motorcycles. Paschke’s electric luminescence prompted the technique in “Past Flows to Future.” Correspondence

Yorkfield Presbyterian church looks toward exciting time of growth Earlier this spring, Yorkfield Presbyterian Church contracted with Reverend Beth Wagner as a transitional pastor. Wagner serves as a Transitional Interim leader to the church as it seeks to call a new Head of Staff. Yorkfield’s previous pastor of 25 years, The Rev. Michael Toburen, retired earlier this year.

“I view being a transitional pastor as a unique and valuable calling,” says Wagner, who has served in this specialized ministry since 2008.

“I love playing this important role at such a crucial time in a church’s life—especially a church as healthy and vibrant as YPC. This period between leaders provides unique opportunities for even more growth.

Exciting things can be happening. It gives me great satisfaction to know I’ll be spending the next year or two guiding YPC through a time of discernment and exploration as they look to call a new Senior Pastor.”

tional pastor experience to the role, having bridged the gap between pastoral staff for six other congregations, including several with long-serving leaders such as Toburen has been.

Pastor Beth and her family will be Elmhurst residents for the duration of her term, living in the church’s manse.

between grief-stricken Elmhurstarea brothers during the U.S. Civil War inspired “Death Comes Home,” a diptych previously displayed in the Elmhurst History Museum “Letters from Home” exhibit honoring the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Baker says of his art, “The passion in these paintings is personal. Through my paintings, I strive to communicate experiences of life – joy, freedom, fear, grief.” Referring to a painting that was part of a four-year traveling exhibition of motorcycle art at the National Motorcycle Museum and the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, Baker explained, “Some of my paintings, like ‘Cloud Chaser,’ are about the wind in my hair, and two wheels in motion. It’s unclear where the rider is going, and whether the ride is free-spirited and joyous, or whether imminent danger looms ahead.”

Works such as the textured “Broken Lands,” invite critical thinking about current or historical events.

Baker described a large abstract landscape, “‘In Between – Ormond Beach’ shares that wondrously peaceful moment when the last bit of sunlight slips beneath the horizon

on a secluded beach.” He continued, “My life is an American journey. My paintings are an open invitation to come along.”

Baker began his artistic career as a teenager, working as a sign painter and pinstriper. After a four-year stint as an artist in the U.S. Air Force, working as an illustrator for the flight magazine and the flight school, he returned to college and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Design.

Former banker accused of stealing more than $325,000 from elderly customers

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced today that bond has been set for a former banker accused of stealing more than $325,000 from three bank customers. Christine Lange, 47, of 7442 W. 56th Place, Summit, appeared in Bond Court yesterday morning where Judge Brian Jacobs set bond at $250,000 with 10% to apply. On March 23, 2017, an arrest warrant was issued for Lange. Lange was apprehended on Saturday, July 30.

Lange was employed as an account executive at Trust Company of Illinois (TCI) located in Downers Grove. In her position with TCI, she had access to customers’ bank accounts. It is alleged that from September 12, 2012, through June 9, 2016, Lange transferred money from the bank accounts of three TCI customers to her own personal bank accounts. It is alleged that Lange performed illegal transfers of funds on 84 occasions totaling $328,000.

Lange’s alleged scheme came to light when TCI performed an internal audit and discovered the alleged thefts.

The victims in this case were in their early 90’s.

“The elderly can at times be seen as an easy target when it comes to financial crimes,” Berlin said. “Fortunately, personnel at TCI uncovered the alleged thefts and alerted authorities.”

Lange’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 21, 2017, for arraignment in front of Judge Robert Miller. In all, she is charged with four counts of Theft, three counts of Financial Exploitation of the Elderly, three counts of Financial Institution Fraud and three counts of Aggravated Identity Theft. Her most serious charge is a Class 1 Felony.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Timothy Christian middle school/arena project right on schedule

Timothy Christian Schools $16 million new middle school and competition arena project continues to march toward the finish line.

Timothy Christian Superintendent Matt Davidson told the Independent late last week that the project, fully funded through contributions and under its $16 million budget, is “slightly ahead of schedule.”

“I would say middle to late September we will have the grand opening,” he said. “We’re slightly under budget because of great management on the project. We’re ahead of schedule, slightly under budget and it’s fully funded. We are 3-for-3.”

Davidson lauded the efforts that were made in fundraising for the project. “It went really well,” he said. “We had a great community effort. We had somewhere in the ballpark of 650 contributions. That ranges from students giving small amounts up to a lead gift of several million dollars and everything between.”

Scuttlebutt from those who have been inside the facilities has been overwhelmingly positive, Davidson said.

“The comments we are getting is it looks amazing,” he said. “We’ve had coaches and staff and alumni inside there and they see the overall venue with the gym, the locker room and the display technology in the lobby.

We have the skybox and skywalk. We feel it’s the top high-school venue anywhere. You’ll find bigger gyms, but when you look at the overall venue we have here, this is as good as it gets. We put in a great sound system. We had a 4K resolution flat-screen TV donated so when you go get a bag of popcorn you’ll be able to watch the game livestreamed in that 4K resolution in the lobby.”

Davidson said Timothy Christian athletic director Jack LeGrand’s phone has been getting a workout.

“Jack’s phone has been ringing off the hook from people looking for rental opportunities,” he said. “Some photos of the gym have leaked on social media, which is fine. There is some good buzz out there.”

Davidson said the bleachers and scoreboard were slated for installation this week. The gym floor is already installed.

Davidson added the new middle-school building is equally impressive. “The junior-high wing is close to being done,” he said. “We’re waiting on some furniture. I took one of our retired teachers in there and they got choked up. It’s going to be a great learning environment for our seventhand eighth-graders. When I give tours I have to drag people away because they stay in one spot gazing at a mag-

nificent building.”

Davidson explained the current plan is for this year’s seventh- and eighth-graders to begin the school year in the current middle-school wing and then move into the new digs sometime in September.

“That has been the plan all along,” he said. “Once we get our occupancy permit we will move into the new building the following Monday. Our faculty and students are antsy to get in there.”

Davidson also gave thanks to the various constituents involved in the project, starting with the city of Elmhurst.

“The city has been fantastic to work with,” he said. “These are good people who have shown great leadership.

We’ve had great cooperation with the city.”

Davidson also praised the work of ECI out of Hillside (the general contractor on the project), V3 Companies (engineer of record out of Woodridge) and AMDG Architects out of Grand Rapids, Mich. (architect on the project), as well as Buikema Law Group out of Hinsdale.

“These professional groups have been with us from the very beginning.

This is our first string,” said Davidson. “They have been sensational and amazing. Those four groups were part of this at the beginning when all this was just a dream. They have been with us every step of the way.”

Davidson said the middle-school space will provide an innovative and collaborative learning experience for students. “There is great open space and common areas for plenty of collaboration,” he said. “First and foremost, this is a great educational space.”

Davidson noted the school (which encompasses a preschool/grade school, middle school and high school on the same Butterfield Road campus, continues to operate debt free. The school’s endowment stands at north of $4 million.

“I would like to say a special thank you to everybody who participated,” he said. “That goes from the students who gave us handfuls of cash to the lead gifts that were sizeable. This was a real community effort. The community rallied to get this across the finish line.

It’s amazing.”

Davidson added the school’s bus transportation fleet will remain offsite and the school has put in bids to host post-season Illinois High School Association events in its new arena.

The arena’s official opening night will be Friday, Dec. 1 for a Pack the Place promotion with the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams hosting longtime rival Chicago Christian.

“It’s a good rivalry and good competition,” said Davidson.

York summer tennis team wins 17U West Suburban title Condon, Julian take No. 2 doubles championship

The York summer tennis team wrapped up its 2017 summer season as champions.

The Dukes won the 17U division West Suburban Summer Tennis League title at the recent conference tournament.

York had one doubles conference champion in the No. 2 team of Jack Condon and Charlie Julian and had second-place medalists in Aleksina Jovic (No. 1 singles) and the No. 3 doubles team of Natalie Krauter and Coco Conrardy.

The Dukes added three third-place finishes with Isabella Nicoli at No. 2 singles, Zoe Burkhardt at No. 3 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Jack Fennell and Jalen Mactangay.

The West Suburban summer league separates the 17U and 14U

divisions. The York 14U squad finished third out of six teams and took third in five of the six flights.

York won the 17U title with eight points, edging second-place River Forest by a single point. Oak Park was third with 6.5 points, while Western Springs took fourth with 5.5 points. Oak Park Country Club was fifth with four points and Beverly Hills Country Club was sixth with 3.5 points.

“It was great to get the players out competing over the summer,” said York coach Tres Heimann. “All the kids really worked hard through match play, camp and lessons. It is great to have an event like this heading into the fall season.”

York finished the summer season with a 7-3 record. It went 4-1 in Trident League play and 3-2 in West Suburban play.

In the West Suburban 17U division, Jovic took second at No. 1 singles. She received a first-round bye and then won her semifinal contest by an 8-6 count over Oak Park and then lost in the title match to River

Forest.

Nicoli was third at No. 2 singles in 17U. She received a first-round bye, lost in the semifinals to Western Springs and came back to score an 8-3 win over Beverly Hills in the third-place match.

Burkhardt took third at No. 3 singles. She had a first-round bye, lost in the semifinals to Western Springs and then defeated Beverly Hills 8-5 in the third-place contest.

Fennell and Macatangay were third at No. 1 doubles in 17U. After a first-round bye, they lost to Western Springs and then came back to down Beverly Hills 8-5 in the third-place match.

Condon and Julian won the No. 2 doubles title at 17U. After a firstround bye, Condon and Julian won 8-6 in the semifinals against Oak Park and then downed River Forest 8-2 to win the title.

Elmhurst swim team successful at regionals First time in 26 years as host pool

The Elmhurst Swim Team (EST) was selected for the first time in it’s 26 years as 1 of 6 sites to host the 2017 Summer Regional Swim Championships. EST co-hosted with the West Chicago Sharks swim team on July 21-23rd at the York High School Pool.

More than 700 swimmers from 25 different swim clubs throughout the state of Illinois participated. EST had 21 qualified swimmers at the meet.

These 21 swimmers made the awards podium in 42 events for a total of 51 medals. EST had Ben

Harrington, age 12, make the top of the awards podium with a state qualifying time in the 200 freestyle as well as the 100 backstroke. Brendan Wagner 12, came in first in the 100 free and the 200 fly.

IC Catholic Prep football team faces same schedule in 2017 Knights open in Kankakee Aug. 25

The IC Catholic Prep football team, which won the state title a year ago, won’t have to jog its memory too much when it comes to this season’s schedule.

The Knights will play the same nine opponents it did a year ago en route to the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division title, a 14-0 record and the aforementioned state title.

In fact, IC Catholic Prep will play those same nine teams in the same order it did a year ago. The only change will be the venues.

The Knights continue their series with Bishop McNamara High School to kick off the season on Friday, Aug. 25 in Kankakee. IC Catholic Prep was a 34-0 winner a year ago in that contest.

The Knights dip into the Chicago Catholic League White Division for a second week in a row on Friday, Sept.

1 when they face St. Laurence out of Burbank at home at Lewis Stadium in Elmhurst. St. Laurence gave IC Catholic Prep its closest game last year with the Knights winning a shootout by a 63-49 count.

Elmwood Park comes to Elmhurst on Friday, Sept. 8 for one of two Metro Suburban Conference crossover games. The Knights won 56-0 last year. Chicago Christian then hosts IC Catholic Prep in Palos Heights on Friday, Sept. 15. The Knights won that contest 72-0 in 2016.

The MSC Blue title defense starts Friday, Sept. 22 when the Knights host Elgin St. Edward. IC Catholic Prep won that game 49-3 last year.

The Knights hit the road in Week six when they face Riverside-Brookfield on Friday, Sept. 29. IC Catholic Prep was a 45-14 winner in 2016.

The Knights stay on the road for a Saturday, Oct. 7 matinee at Wheaton Academy. The Knights won that bout 50-0 last year.

IC Catholic Prep closes the regular season with a pair of home games against Glenbard South on Friday, Oct. 13, and against Fenton on Friday, Oct. 20. The Knights downed Glenbard South 50-0 last year and beat Fenton 49-0 in Week 9 before going on a five-game playoff run where it outscored opponents 253-28.

The Knights will face four teams Courts Plus 12 Intermediate team. that made the state playoffs a year ago and only three with winning records (St. Laurence at 9-4, R-B at 7-3 and Wheaton Academy at 6-4). Glenbard South finished 5-5.

Three teams from Courts Plus finished strong in their respective age divisions at the 2017 USTA Junior Team Tennis Midwest Section Championships on July 29-30 in Indianapolis.

More than 300 tennis players representing over 50 different teams from throughout the Midwest competed in the championship, making it one of the largest junior tennis tournaments in the country. Following are the teams, all ages 12 and under, from Courts Plus that were top finishers in their divisions: Second Place: Courts Plus Lasers, 10 and under, Intermediate Fourth Place: Courts Plus Blasters, 10 and under, Intermediate Second Place: Courts Plus, 12 and

under, Intermediate.

Teams from all five states in the USTA/Midwest Section (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin) competed in the following divisions: 18 and under (ages 1518), 14 and under (ages 13-14), 12 and under (ages 11-12), and 10 and under. Each division includes both intermediate and advanced level

IC Catholic Prep wrestlers fare well at nationals Knights honor four-year, three-sport athletes

A trio of IC Catholic Prep wrestlers recently competed in the freestyle and Greco-Roman state and national competitions.

Joey Bianchini, who won a Class A 113-pound state title last year for the Knights, qualified for both Greco-Roman and freestyle nationals for Team Illinois. Bianchini took second in the state in Champaign in Greco-Roman in May. He also took third in the state in freestyle, but was elevated to the national team when the second-place individual was unable to compete in Fargo.

At nationals, Bianchini went 2-2 in the freestyle competition and 1-2 in Greco-Roman action. He competed in the Juniors division in both disciplines.

He wrestled at 126 pounds for freestyle and 132 for Greco-Roman.

“Joey made it to the round of 32 in both styles, which is great,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Kevin Sliva.

Bianchini also was asked to participate in the junior Greco-Roman duals team competition in Oklahoma for Team Illinois.

Team Illinois ended up winning the Greco-Roman duals.

Bianchini went 4-1 in the event.

“He wrestled against Team Minne-

sota in the championship and won his match,” said Sliva.

IC Catholic Prep had two other wrestlers compete in the freestyle state meet in May. David Vargas wrestled at heavyweight in the Cadet division and took third place, missing making the Team Illinois Fargo roster by one slot.

Victor Vargas, his brother, went 3-2 at 220 pounds in the Juniors division.

All three wrestlers are part of the Izzy Style club in the off-season.

Sliva was thrilled to see three IC Catholic Prep wrestlers compete at the state and national levels.

“We keep having a little more each year,” Sliva said.

Iron Knight Awards During its graduation awards dinner for the Class of 2017, IC Catholic Prep honored a host of individuals who played three sports for four years at the school.

That group this year included Charles Hipskind, Elizabeth Maloney, Trey Morris, Tess Reardon, Matt Sutton and Robert Vitek.

IC Catholic Prep football to host fantasy football event The IC Catholic Prep football program will host a fantasy football training camp with Matt Bowen on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 7-10 p.m., at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Elmhurst.

The event will be led by ESPN

analyst and former football player Bowen, who is an assistant coach on the IC Catholic Prep football staff.

IC Catholic Prep is the defending Class 3A state champion.

Bowen will help attendees prepare for the 2017 fantasy drafts with detailed player breakdowns, rankings and projections. Along with a unique insider’s look at NFL playbooks and schemes, Bowen will answer questions and provide feedback to help build a championship fantasy football season, the school said.

Tickets are $100 per person and includes a buffet-style dinner and an open bar.

There also will be two raffle drawings at the event. One raffle winner will receive a custom IC Catholic Prep bags set and a second winner will receive a YETI Tundra 75 cooler.

Winners must be present to win. The fantasy football training camp is perfect for football enthusiasts and is a great opportunity for friends to catch up while supporting an outstanding cause, IC Catholic Prep stated.

Proceeds from the event go toward the funding of IC Catholic Prep football and other IC Catholic Prep athletic programs.

Students across Illinois are ready to come back to school in a few weeks, but there may not be enough teachers in some areas to greet them.

Emily Fox, the Illinois State Board of Education’s Division Administrator for Educator Effectiveness, said the state is about 1,000 teachers short to start the next school year.

“Our most recent data shows that more than 1,000 teaching positions remain unfilled,” Fox said. “I know that doesn’t sound like a lot compared to the total number of teachers in Illinois, which is about 130,000. But these open positions are often concentrated in small schools and districts in rural areas.”

Chad Hoesman, the assistant regional superintendent in Macoupin County, said schools in central and southern Illinois are scrambling to hire teachers ahead of the first day of school.

“From what we understand is, every single area on the list is facing a shortage,” Hoesman said. “Everything from elementary ed teachers to high school PE teachers, there’s a shortage right now.”

Hoesman said prospective teachers, if they have their teaching license and they passed their basic skill test, can essentially name the community where they want to work.

Both Hoesman and Fox blame Illinois’ teacher shortage on a number of factors, including that there are too few young teachers coming out of college. And, they say, enticing new teachers to smaller communities in rural parts of Illinois is sometimes tough.

DuPage County seeks input on county programs, spending

Residents have a chance to provide important feedback to the DuPage County Board and staff by participating in this year’s County budget survey. The survey is available online at survey-mokey.com/r/DuPageBudgetSurveyFY2018.

Each year, the DuPage County Board asks the public to prioritize County services including public safety and court services, road and trail maintenance, services to seniors and the disabled, flood control and public health initiatives. The information helps shape the next year’s budget, determining spending levels for the County’s various programs.

County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said the survey is an integral part of this process.

“We highly value the feedback we receive from our budget survey,” he said. “Like DuPage families, we too have a budget we must live within.

And like DuPage families, we must balance rising costs with available revenue. We use the survey data as a guide to develop a County spending blueprint that is fiscally responsible and meets residents’ needs in the most cost-efficient manner possible.”

Finance Committee Chairman Paul Fichtner said the survey coincides with the regular budget process as DuPage officials determine spending levels for Fiscal Year 2018, which begins on Dec. 1, 2017.

“We’ve been able to keep the tax rate flat on the county government portion of residents’ property tax bill for the past nine years in a row. We are careful stewards of these funds and responsive to the comments and feedback the budget survey provides.

It’s an important piece of our budget building process and we’re grateful for community participation,” Fichtner remarked.

Bond set for woman accused of setting fire to a Roselle townhome

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Roselle Chief of Police Steve Herron have announced that bond has been set for an Elgin woman accused of setting fire to a Roselle townhouse and attacking one of the occupants of the residence.

Chevaz Odio, 28, recently appeared in bond court where Judge Brian Jacobs set bond at $2 million with 10 percent to apply. Odio has been charged with one count of at-

tempted murder (Class X felony), two counts of aggravated arson, (Class X felony), one count of home invasion (Class X felony) and one count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle (Class 2 Chevaz Odio Felony).

At approximately 2:30 a.m., July

25, firefighters with the Roselle Fire Department responded to a call of a fire on Circle Avenue in Roselle. It is alleged that at approximately 2 a.m.

Odio entered the townhouse and was confronted by a female occupant of the home. It is alleged that after a brief verbal altercation, Odio stabbed the woman several times with a sharp knife-like object and attempted to suffocate her with a plastic bag.

self from the alleged attack and retreated to an upstairs room. It is alleged that Odio then started a fire on the first floor of the townhouse before fleeing in a vehicle that was parked in the driveway that did not belong to her.

The woman and another occupant of the townhome were forced to jump from the second floor of the townhouse to escape the fire. An investigation led to Odio who was taken into custody that afternoon without incident.

“It is alleged that in the early morning hours, Chevaz Odio broke into a Roselle townhome, stabbed one of the occupants and then set fire to the home while two individuals were upstairs, forcing them to jump from a second story window to escape the flames,” Berlin said.

“Thankfully the injuries sustained by both victims are not life-threatening.

This outrageous behavior will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force of the law.

Thanks to the outstanding collaborative work of several law enforcement agencies Ms. Odio was identified as a suspect and taken into custody later that same day. I would like to thank Commander Bill Lyons of the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force, Detective Dan Torza of the Elmhurst Police Department and detectives with the Roselle Police Department for their outstanding work on the this case.”

Herron noted, “This is an example of multiple police and fire departments coming together providing aid to the injured, protecting the properties threatened by the fire and to ultimately bring this case to a rapid and successful conclusion with the arrest of Ms. Odio. We thank the officers and detectives of the agencies who assisted by providing outstanding police work during this investigation.”

Odio’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 21 in front of Judge George Bakalis.
