children (Edie, Kelly, David, Timothy, Stephanie, Michael, Ryan, William), and eight great grandchildren.

Graduated from St. Phillips High School in 1948, Loyola University with undergraduate degree in 1952 and Juris Doctor in 1966.

Bob enjoyed an illustrious career at Bankers Life & Casualty beginning in 1948, first as claims adjuster then as corporate counsel from 1966 to 1992, then led a private practice 1966-2002. He fulfilled philanthropic duties as a member of the Elks Lodge for 24 years and with contributions to several charitable organizations.

He resided in Mesa, Ariz., for several years with Joy Marie until 2008. He then reconnected with former Bankers Life coworker Marion “Mikki” Unger (widowed), with whom he has relished life and created wonderful memories with. She was a catalyst in his cheerfulness and shared in the Sheehan family’s happiest memories.

Robert was the quintessential Renaissance Man with many great qualities: intellectual, investor, traveler, vintner, farmer, chef, sportsman, private pilot, RV’er, motorcyclist and multiple property owner. He always carried his trusty Swiss Army knife, was respectful and respected, was an excellent role model and will forever be missed.

In lieu of a viewing, a private celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date. Arrangements provided by the family.

Eldred Ellis Denny, 89 Eldred Ellis Denny—known to many as “Denny”—died peacefully at his home in Elmhurst on July 9, 2019, after living life to the fullest for 89 years. He was a “God, Country, and Family” kind of guy, known for his generous heart, great hugs, and hearty laugh. Eldred was a proud member of the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command and served at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona, during the Korean Conflict. He continued in public service as a police officer, first in Elmhurst and then in Lombard, where he was injured on the job. He went on to serve as deputy assessor in York Township and retired as deputy supervisor of assessments for DuPage County. Unafraid to indulge his entrepreneurial spirit throughout his life, Eldred operated a painting and decorating business with his longtime friend Jack Eierman and worked independently as a locksmith, private detective, and real estate appraiser/tax consultant. Recreational interests included hunting, fishing, clock making, woodworking, and tree farming.

He was preceded in death by his father Alexander and mother Dagmar (nee Clausen). He leaves behind his wife of 40 years Marianne Kroeger; children Joyce (Gene) Sexton, Joan Staley, Laura (Gary) Kaczmarek, Kevin (Debbie) Denny, David (Sandy) Denny, and Amy (John) Kremer; former wife and mother of his children Marion Krengel Denny; brother

Yorkfield Presbyterian ‘roars’ through Vacation Bible School Vacation Bible School at Yorkfield Presbyterian Church was held from July 15 through July 18. Thanks to 90 (!) volunteers, the week was a “Roaring” success, as “Roar” was the theme for the more than 165 young kids who too part in the experience of Vacation Bible School. Through singing, games, crafts, snacks, Kid Vid mission/crew time and Bible drama, the children learned how, when life is unfair, when life is scary, when life changes, when life is sad, and when life is good, GOD IS GOOD. In keeping with the theme of “Roar,” our charity this year was Books for Africa. During the week, the children raised more than $1,200, which will allow Books for Africa to ship more than 2,400 books to those who need them most.

The week was capped off with a grand finale where families had the opportunity to hear their children sing the songs they learned during the week praising God in the sanctuary of the church followed by an ice cream social in Fellowship Hall. It is always such a blessing to see the joy on the children’s and parents’ faces as they meet and reconnect with the leaders who helped during the week.

issued citations for possession of cannabis, illegal transportation of alcoholic liquor and illegal window tint subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Route 83 at around 4:44 p.m.

Vincent Williams, 28, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, tinted windows and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Myrtle at around 9:46 p.m.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Assault, battery July 19 A victim at a restaurant in the 100 block of E. Schiller told police at around 1:31 p.m. that while working at the restaurant, she was verbally abused and shoved by a coworker. The suspect denied pushing the victim. The victim left work to avoid any further altercations.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass to property July 22 A victim in the 100 block of W. Industrial told police at around 7:01 p.m. that an unknown suspect damaged the left and right side-view mirrors on her car while it was parked in a store parking lot. There is no suspect information.

July 19-July 20 A victim in the 100 block of N. Willow told police that her vehicle had been scraped while parked near her apartment building sometime between the above dates.

Disorderly conduct July 23 Goldie Hill, 37, of Chicago, was charged with disorderly conduct in the 300 block of E. Lake at around 7:46 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a verbal argument, Hill chased the victim around the business.

Domestic battery, domestic incident July 21 A victim told police at around 3:24 a.m. that the suspect became upset over a statement that the victim made. The suspect drove the victim to Elmhurst Hospital, allegedly held onto the victim, and forced her through the hospital’s doorway, striking her. The suspect left prior to police arrival. An investigation is pending.

July 20 A 44-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery in the 900 block of S. Hillside at around 6:06 p.m. Police said a victim came into the police station to report the suspect had battered him.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, possession of alternative nicotine product July 24 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and I-290 at around 5:40 p.m., the suspects were found to be in possession of cannabis and heroin. The suspects were arrested and transported to the police station.

One of the suspects, Tyshaun Manning, 21, of Chicago, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, improper use of an electronic communication device and tinted windows. The second suspect, Tahavis Martin, 24, of Berwyn, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and no seat belt.

Nelson Perez, 20, of Northlake, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 12:46 a.m.

July 23 Jorge Perez, 37, of Hillside, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 11:51 p.m.

July 21 Christopher A. Dalton, 26, of Richton Park, was charged with possession of cannabis, driving while license suspended and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and York at around 8:30 a.m.

July 20 A subject in the 100 block of E. First came into the police station at around 9:15 a.m. to report he was visiting the area until July 23 and is a registered sex offender in the state of California. A condition of his probation in California is to report his location to local authorities while outside of his home state. The subject was staying at a hotel on Riverside Drive.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery July 24 Police said that subsequent to a traffic crash near Berkley and St. Charles at around 1:51 p.m., Argelio Garcia-Lopez, 20, of Addison, was found to be driving without a driver’s license and was in possession of a fraudulent Social Security card. The suspect was charged with felony possession of fictitious ID, no valid driver’s license and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Theft was reported in the 500 block of W. Comstock at around 12:21 p.m. A victim told police that he had cash missing from his wallet which is kept in his work truck. The suspect denied taking the money. The victim did not wish to sign complaints.

July 23 Theft of services was reported at a business in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at around 5:26 p.m. The manager of the business told police that a suspect came into the store to have her nails done and left without paying for the ser-

vice. The suspect was located and escorted back to the salon to pay for her nails. She was served a no trespass notice for the business.

Oak (three incidents), the 200 block of N. Larch and the 100 block of N. Highland. In each case, an unknown suspect(s) entered unlocked vehicles. No items were stolen from the vehicles except in two instances: cash was stolen form a vehicle in the 200 block of S. Rex and a garage door opener was stolen from a vehicle in the 100 block of N. Oak.

July 22 A victim in the 500 block of S. York told police at around 12:35 p.m. that she received an email from whom she believed was her manager asking her to purchase Google Play gift cards. The victim purchased the gift cards, but did not provide any of the info to the unknown suspect. The victim requested a police report in order to obtain a refund from Google.

July 20 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of S. West at around 9:49 p.m. A victim told police that she left her purse on the front seat of her unattended vehicle while she attended a baseball game. Upon returning to her vehicle, she observed her front passenger window was shattered and her purse was missing.

Suspected theft was reported at a restaurant in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 10:16 p.m. A victim told police that she placed her iPhone on a table and left it unattended while assisting a customer. Video surveillance showed one of the suspects pick the phone up and walk out of the camera’s view. The victim confronted the suspects who related they were unable to wait for the police and left the area in the suspect vehicle. The suspects received notification to contact the Elmhurst Police and subsequently responded to the police station and relinquished the cell phone stating it was taken by accident after believing it was their phone. The victim did not wish to pursue charges.

July 18-July 20 Burglary was reported at a school in the 100 block of W. Madison. A witness told police that a plastic storage shed on school district property had been found standing open. The reporting officer inspected the shed and observed signs of forced entry to the shed doors.

Residential burglary was reported in the 100 block of W. Butterfield. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed a Samsung flat screen TV from the living room and a lap top computer from the den. The victim believes her son took the items. The victim advised she did not wish to pursue the case.

July 19 Financial exploitation of the elderly was reported at around 12:07 p.m. A complainant told police that a suspect has been making large, unauthorized withdrawals from his wife’s accounts. An investigation is pending.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 3:30 p.m. A complainant told police that a suspect described as white female with long, light hair, wearing a dark-colored tank top and tan shorts with visible abrasions and lesions on her arms and legs, ordered lobsters from the seafood counter, placed the lobsters in her cart and abandoned the empty cart in an aisle. Cullerton works to reduce forensic backlog

State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) praised the Illinois State Police crime lab’s efforts to reduce the massive backlog of cases awaiting DNA analysis.

In July, ISP posted 26 job postings for forensic scientists to get to work on the massive backlog of cases. Filling these positions will allow the agency to address the backlog.

“Forensic evidence can make or break the outcome of a case,” Cullerton said.

“This highly scientific process continues to become increasingly important in solving crimes. The Illinois State Police is working diligently to help solve this crisis and eliminate this catastrophic backlog once and for all, and to do it, they need more experts.”

Cullerton sponsored House Joint Resolution 7, which directs the Illinois State Police to take all steps possible to comply with the Federal Rapid DNA Act of 2017. The measure was adopted

In today’s climate where police and prosecutors are increasingly scrutinized about their procedures, DNA evidence is crucial to the successful prosecution of criminal cases. The current backlog of biological evidence includes numerous cases of violent crimes, including murders, shootings, and criminal sexual assaults, that end up being delayed for long periods of time. It typically takes at least one year for biological evidence to be processed by the state crime labs.

“I’m glad to see ISP taking steps to drastically improve turnaround and ensure they are in compliance with federal protocols,” Cullerton said. “The goal of our legislation was to jump start this process to ensure justice is delivered swiftly.”

The bipartisan initiative is sponsored by state Rep. David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) in the House.

They are vulnerable. Not necessarily physically, but publically so to people who might chose to place them in that light. I didn’t think about this when they were born; but it has risen to the surface in the wake of recent public activities and debate.

My husband and I have worked hard – given due diligence – to raising boys who respect not only their sister, but all girls and women.

They now have a niece and I think she furthers their realization about how precious females are – how honored and safe and protected their

“We need to find solutions to end homelessness among youth in our communities, and to provide stability and protection to children whose basic needs are not being met,” Glowiak said. “The State of Illinois has a responsibility to fight this crisis and provide our children housing security.”

According to the General Assembly’s findings, one out of 10 people between the ages of 18-25 is experiencing homelessness for some amount of time over a 12-month period. For those ages 13-17, one in 30

experiences a form of homelessness over a 12-month period.

Research shows that homeless children are 87 percent more likely to drop out of school, while those who drop out of high school are four-and-a-half times more likely to become homeless as adults.

“Stable housing is fundamental in ways so many of us take for granted,” Glowiak said. “It’s the basis for academic and social opportunities. My hope is this subcommittee will create a long-term path to help us reach our goal to eliminate homelessness among our children once and for all.”

The law goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2020.

Bethel UCC youth take mission trip to Pine Ridge Reservation In June, 18 youth and six adults from Bethel United Church of Christ in Elmhurst traveled to Pine Ridge, South Dakota, on the youth group’s annual week-long mission work trip.

This year’s destination was Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Re-Member, an organization founded in 1998 by a United Church of Christ pastor, which is committed to directing and supporting the efforts of more than 1,000 volunteers who come each year to help improve the quality of life for the Lakota people living on the reservation.

The mission trip provided an enriching combination of work, education, new experiences and relationships, and spiritual growth, especially for the young people, but also for the adults.

A different way of life “The way of life at Pine Ridge is far different than our own here in the suburbs,” said Bethel Youth Group leader Jenny Pozen. “Most of the homes we saw were mobile homes, many with broken-out windows from last fall’s hail storm, with large families and anyone needing a roof over their heads living in them. This is the poorest county in the United States. You find yourselves shocked that people are living in these conditions in our own country.

“Many of the people do not have beds to sleep in at night, bathrooms or running water to use. They have a difficult time in the winter because of the extreme winds and cold. Getting in and out of their homes can even be a challenge if they do not have stairs or a ramp--or if they are in wheelchairs, due to limb loss from diabetes. The problems are immense, to say the least.

It is heartbreaking to see this poverty and pain.”

Bethel group members were involved in a number of projects during their stay—helping construct and put up outhouses; installing insulation and skirting on mobile homes to keep them warmer in the harsh South Dakota winters, thereby cutting heating costs significantly; building stairs and ramps for easier mobile home access; building beds for those who are without; and providing mattresses, new sheets, pillows and blankets.

The Lakota have a strong bond within the community, and this is a place where no matter where you come from, you are called sister or brother.

“One man on the reservation—Uncle Will-- exemplifies this love better than any other. Not only is Uncle Will a music teacher at a high school in Pine Ridge, but he is also a mentor and counselor to the young kids on the reservation and a symbol of hope among all the hardships on the reservation. He

helps specifically with suicide prevention because he has felt that pain himself. The attention and love Will gives to the youth is what gives kids hope and reassurance that they are sacred.

Will has shown me the power of love.”

The Bethel youth were blessed to have enthusiastic chaperones—Jenny Pozen, Lisa Landreth, Carrie Ward, Kevin Rogers, John Kolosieke, Sr., and Todd Keenan—who were willing to take a week from their busy lives to

travel and work beside them, sharing their faith by modeling a selfless and generous spirit.

Getting to know the people, the culture Perhaps even more significant were the life-changing experiences in getting to know the Lakota people. One of Re-Member’s goals is to create relationships, not only with the Lakota people but also with the volunteers who come there, and for those volunteers to feel a kinship with the Lakota people. From the Lakota greeting “Welcome, relatives!” and time spent listening to the Lakota’s stories to the projects undertaken and interaction with the tribe’s leaders, members of the group began to build relationships with the Lakota and understand the challenges they face. Through cultural immersion, youth group members have become another voice of the people of Pine Ridge.

Tang Soo Do attends National Championships

Elmhurst Tang Soo Do attended the World Tang Soo Do National Championships in Stamford, Conn., on July 19-20. The team of five competitors from Elmhurst received a total of nine medals overall.

Competitors are awarded points for each medal they receive towards the overall national championship belt. Jade Inoshita was runner-up in the point total for teen women black belts.

County HOPE Taskforce supports new partner to combat opioid crisis

On Monday, July 22, the DuPage County Heroin/Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Taskforce announced its support of a proposed Haymarket DuPage Behavioral Health Clinic to provide treatment for substance use disorder in DuPage County.

Nationally and locally, drug overdose has become the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States. In 2018, there were 98 opioid overdose deaths along with 592 non-fatal opioid overdoses in DuPage County.

The HOPE Taskforce, as a joint operation of the County Board and Board of Health, has been charged to advise DuPage County elected leadership on needed program development, infrastructure and policy recommendations to address this issue.

“As we continue to battle the opioid crisis, we have determined that treatment for substance use disorder is an access to care issue, particularly for our underserved residents,” said Dr. Lanny Wilson, HOPE Taskforce Co-chair. “The proposed Haymarket Center will provide a full continuum of care for those with substance use disorder.”

Access to evidence-based treatment is an essential part of health and recovery. According to a 2017 survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), only 19 percent of individuals with a substance use disorder received treatment. In Illinois, the latest statistics (2015) show only 11.7 percent of those with a substance use disorder received treatment.

Photo Digitization Day coming to History Museum Maybe they’re stashed away in a remote closet or gathering dust on a shelf in the attic, but there’s no doubt they’re out there: those old photographs and scrapbooks from former

Elmhurst residents that everyone intends to do something with—someday.

The Elmhurst History Museum staff is ready to help locals organize their

personal photos by offering free scanning and digitization of those photos from the past during the Digitize Your Elmhurst Photos Day on Sunday, Aug. 4 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The museum

is seeking photographs pertaining to Elmhurst history to add to the growing digital collection. Whether it’s pictures of Elmhurst homes, family, schools, streets and scenery, or large gatherings such as parades and parties—bring them by on Digitization Day. The museum staff will be on hand to scan them for the collection (with written permission) and provide participants with digital copies to keep. Photos can be scanned on the spot and returned along with an email link to the digitized copies, or they can be dropped off for pickup at a later time.

Interested Elmhurst residents with photos to be digitized who can’t make it on Aug. 4 are invited to call Elmhurst History Museum and make an appointment for a convenient date. For more information, contact Collections Curator Dan Lund at 630-530-3322.

IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team earns national academic award Knights cited for excellence in 25 of award’s 26 years of existence

The IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball program continues to demonstrate the importance of the word “student” in the term student-athlete.

The Knights were recently notified they are again a recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association team academic award.

It’s the 25th time in the award’s 26year history that IC Catholic Prep has won it. The awards have come under the direction of retired longtime coach Jean Field and current Knights coach and former IC player Nancy Kerrigan.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-1993 academic year, honors collegiate and high-school volleyball teams that display excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative GPA on a 5.0 scale. This year’s award covers the 2018-2019 school year.

“The girls do goal setting and this award always is in the top three for the girls to achieve,” said Kerrigan.

“They are very proud of it. I am proud of it. We are students first and athletes second. We have shown that you can be successful at both. It’s what our program prides itself on.”

The award is for varsity programs only, and any player who played in a varsity match during the season counts toward the cumulative team GPA. “Academics are huge,” said Kerrigan. “We emphasize it the moment they walk in the door at school. You are students and athletics are kind of a luxury. They have to be able to learn time management and stick to it. It takes a lot of work to be a student-athlete. We keep an eye on things. We do grade checks every week. If I see someone slipping a little bit, that opens a little conversation on what can we do to help out that particular player. Academics has to be a priority. I don’t see any other way around it. The girls have embraced that. You will see them sitting together on the bus and you can hear them talk about what assignments they have. Our girls use their downtime very wisely, and the young girls coming into the program see the older kids doing it and they learn from it. It’s one of those pay-it-forward things that keeps happening.”

Kerrigan said last week the program was still in the midst of its July high school and youth camps. The

Knights also were wrapping up play in the Palos summer league in the south suburbs. IC Catholic Prep was 10-0 going into the final day of playoffs.

“We can’t get too crazy about summer league,” Kerrigan said. “The girls have played well. It’s a great group of girls. I’m going to really enjoy them

this season.”

Kerrigan noted the program is going through an outlier period of sorts where there has been virtually no turnover with players returning this year. “From top to bottom, we return almost everybody,” she said. “I think we lost two players from the program, which is unusual.”

Kerrigan said the Knights had 44 players in camp. “That’s a great number,” she said. “There is a lot of interest in the school, which is good for us and the program. The girls are having fun and they definitely are learning.

We’re seeing a lot of progress, especially from the girls coming back who were freshmen last year. They bene-

fited from a year with our coaching staff. And now it’s the summer and we get to see their progress they have made and draw on that inspiration. It’s so impressive to see the advancement in their skills. We’re looking forward to another good year, for sure.”

York winter season sports honors Dukes student-athletes compile awards in and out of classroom

York student-athletes accumulated many athletic and academic awards throughout the 2018-2019 school year. The Independent previously posted the spring sports season awards.

Here are the winter season awards for the 2018-2019 seasons.

In girls basketball, Sara Krissinger and Sydney Molis were named all-conference, while Kathleen Levins, Kiah Rufus, Madison Stark and Madeline Welz earned all-academic distinctions.

For boys basketball, Nate Shock-

ey, Erik Cohn and Nick Kosich were all-conference selections. Cohn and Kosich went over the 1,000-point mark for their careers at York.

Kosich partook in a high-school allstar game event and was a northern Illinois most valuable athlete nominee for a Dukes team that set a school record for wins in a season with a 29-5 mark. York won a regional title and its own Jack Tosh Holiday Classic title.

Hassan Iqbal, Kosich, John Milling, Sam Nemanich and Sam Walsh were all-academic in boys basketball.

For wrestling, Antonio Gutierrez, KeVon Robinson, Josh Mathiasen and Chris Eckard were all-conference picks. Gutierrez advanced to the state meet. Zachary Armstrong, Gutierrez, Brian Kunst and Jason Lewis

were all-academic.

In girls gymnastics, Angelina DeBlasio and Lailah Waddell were all-conference performers as underclassmen. Waddell is a sophomore and DeBlasio is a freshman.

Sydney Hill, Kelly Millins and Olivia Romano were all-academic in girls gymnastics.

For competitive dance, York won the conference and took eighth in the state. State participants included Bella Del Medico, Amanda Gorski, Norah Haarstad, Katherine Larson, Mya Lawless, Alexandra Leonard, Haley Pleva, Lauren Simpson, Rio Iorri, Kayla Fitzgibbons, Emily Hiser and Nev Lawless, as well as Emma Bergl, Emily Ziccardi, Eloise Odorisio, Devon Proud, Lanie Meyer and Kaylee Schaner.

Larson, Lawless, Leonard, Pleva and Simpson earned all-academic citations.

For competitive cheer, York was second at the sectional level and 19th in the state. State participants included Joe Orrico, Kaitlin Templeman, Haley Brown, Emma Brown, Abby Coglianese, Tegan Cook, Rob Denman, Tatum Juskie, Grace Maniola, Lillian Marrah, Cassie Martyniuk, Dana Miura, Olivia Morici, Danielle Renno, Peyton Renno, Emily Sadowicz, Bree Spallone, Gabriella Toritto and Maria Vitullo.

All-academic selections for competitive cheer included Orrico and Templeman.

For girls bowling, Ruby Noel, Krystyna Panek, Rose Klinger, Lauren Rickenbrode and Holly Santucci were named to the all-conference

team. Klinger is a freshman and Santucci is a sophomore.

State meet participants for the Dukes included Noel, Panek, Caroline Collins, Klinger, Khloe Lesus, Rickenbrode, Santucci and Madelin Mountcastle.

All-academic picks in girls bowling were Noel and Panek.

For boys swimming and diving, which took third in the sectional, Jay Jensen, Simon David and Isaac Marlott were all-conference picks.

Jensen, David, Marlott and Connor Groya were all-sectional picks. Jensen, David and Matt Billenstein (2nd place in athletes with disabilities 50yard freestyle) were state meet participants.

The Independent will have a rundown of the fall award-winners in next week’s edition.

Elmhurst lost 27-12 to Wheaton Post 76 in the loser’s bracket opener and was eliminated from the tournament.

Wheaton scored 13 runs in the first inning and added 11 more runs in the fifth inning. The game was halted after five innings. All 27 Wheaton runs were earned.

Wheaton pounded out 26 hits in the contest. Elmhurst made things interesting with three runs in the

second, two in the third and seven in the fourth to cut the lead to 1612.

Jose Alvarez (Fenton) went 4-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI. Jack Ryan (IC Catholic Prep) went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Jake Galanis (Leyden) had a run scored and a walk.

Jack Klein (Leyden) had a hit and two RBI. Abraham Otero (Fenton) had two runs scored, a hit and two

walks. Kyle Mitchell (Fenton) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Nick DeSimone (Fenton) had two runs scored and two walks.

AJ Howard (IC Catholic Prep) had three hits, a run scored and two RBI. Ricky Saucedo (Fenton) had a run scored, an RBI and three walks.

Elmhurst had 13 hits and walked nine times. Mitchell had a double and a triple. Howard and Klein each stole two bases. Post 187 stole nine bases as a team and left 10 runners on base.

tournament with an 11-4 loss to Morris Post 294. Morris led 4-1 after two innings and then extended its lead with two runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh.

Alvarez, Nick DeSimone, Galanis, Zwolinski, Montoya, Mitchell and Otero each had a single hit.

DeSimone, Zwolinski and Otero each had an RBI. Alvarez and Mitchell each had a triple. Otero stole a base.

Galanis pitched five innings and allowed only two earned runs on three hits and struck out five.

Saucedo pitched two innings.

Elmhurst American Legion baseball wraps up U15 and U19 seasons Post 187 to host Great Lakes Regional tournament next summer in Elmhurst

The Elmhurst American Legion baseball program recently wrapped up two of its three team seasons.

The Post 187 Muddogs U19 team went 1-2 in the 11th District playoffs in Carol Stream, and finished the year with a 10-8 mark.

“We did well,” said Post 187 manager Mike Biondo. “We were a good team that was very young with our pitching. Our bats were there during the regular season, but when it came time for playoffs they kind of became nonexistent.”

Biondo said Post 187 will benefit in the future from the experience players such as Aidan Kress (Fenton), Dave Sykora (IC Catholic Prep) and Jimmy O’Donnell (Leyden) gained this season.

“Aiden pitched well and Dave Sykora’s pitching was good,” said Biondo. “Jimmy O’Donnell did well with the bat later on. He was swinging it well. It was a fun group to be around. The future looks good, especially with having established pitching coming back.”

York’s Ian Steinorth also is eligible to come back. He had a 1.56 ERA in his pitching appearances, while Sykora had a 1.91 ERA. “Those are very impressive,” said Biondo.

Steinorth will continue his baseball career at North Central College in Naperville, while Sykora still has two seasons to go at IC Catholic Prep. Kress has two more years at Fenton.

“We were very young, which is a good thing going forward,” said Biondo. “We’re still looking to add four or five more solid pitchers. We’d like to have that depth, especially when we go into the playoffs.”

Post 187’s U15 team also wrapped up its season. The Muddogs went 2-13-1. “We struggled at times,” said Biondo. “It was a tough season. The good news is we got to see kids step up and be leaders—guys like Oscar Torres (Fenton). He hit over .480 and is a very vocal kid. He was out there picking up guys as much as he could.”

The U15 Muddogs also received strong play from the likes of George O’Brien (pitcher, IC Catholic Prep), Jake Marshall (catcher, IC Catholic Prep) and Matthew Maziarka (pitcher, Fenton), as well as Damian Pacheco (shortstop and second base, York).

“We had some athletic guys that we could put in certain spots,” said Biondo. “It was tough for us. We were going up against programs that can pick kids from anywhere and everywhere, while we are limited by boundaries. But it’s better to face this tougher competition. It makes them strive for success against these tougher teams instead of going up against weaker teams and winning trophies. And if kids are good, we’re going to move them up to our other teams. We are here so guys can get better not to stack teams.”

Biondo announced Post 187 will be the host of the Great Lakes Regional American Legion tournament next year (Aug. 5-9, 2020).

“We’re waiting to get things finalized in terms of fields,” he said. “We’ll have all that locked down come fall or over the winter break. We’re definitely going to need community support and volunteers. We’re asking people who would like to volunteer in any way possible to contact the Elmhurst American Legion post.”

Eight teams from eight regions will qualify for the tournament.

Post 187, as the host team, earns an automatic bid. “That should help us attract players with the opportunity to play on a higher platform,” said Biondo. “Whoever wins the tournament goes to the American Legion World Series that usually is televised on ESPN and ESPN2, and is held in Shelby, North Carolina.”

Biondo pointed out this year’s World Series is Aug. 18-19 and will be televised on ESPN. Biondo also noted the program likely will not field a U15 team next season. “I think 15 is going to go by the wayside and we will work on 17 and 19,” he said. “It was a lot for me with the management of three teams. We’ll focus on the 17s and 19s teams.

We’ve had a lot of success there and we have coaches committed to working with these kids. They know how to make these kids better players and they lead by example.”

We have also worked to protect our boys – from the world at large because the world can be cruel to anyone. It is the world in which we live.

As a mother of a daughter and of sons I am conflicted. What would I do, how would I feel if my daughter were hurt or attacked physically?

What would I do, how would I feel if my sons were hurt or attacked publicly?

In the world we live in, the court of public opinion can take over in the matter of minutes (or perhaps seconds) and people are judged before they have the opportunity to back up their own case. There are always two sides, but in today’s society these are very polarized. You are either in or you are out.

Reputations and careers are lost.

Hurt runs rampant – on both sides of the aisle. It is devastating to everyone involved.

It makes it hard to be a parent of both girls and boys. Which side do I take? Am I forced to take a side?

I wanted to end this column with an answer to my own personal dilemma – loving my daughter and loving my sons and wanting to protect them equally – but I don’t have a pat answer. I don’t even have a suggestion. For me this may be a first.

It seems the world has become more divisive, polarized and opinionated than ever before – at least in my lifetime. Our culture is changing, but not all change is good.

It feels scary – for my daughter and my sons – the people I brought into this world in an infinite act of optimism.

And that just makes me sad.

Momma bear sad – and there isn’t a sad more sad than that.
