County reports 80 percent of residents have received at least one dose of vaccine According to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention vaccination data, 80 percent of eligible residents 12 years and older have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 63 percent are fully vaccinated. Additionally, 98 percent of DuPage County residents ages 65 years and older have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 81 percent are fully vaccinated. Most importantly, there has been a notable decline in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths throughout the county.

On April 30, DuPage County officials announced a goal to have 80 percent of eligible residents fully

vaccinated by July 1 to protect the health and well-being of all residents.

Since the announcement of this goal, more than 298,000 vaccine doses have been administered to residents, and another 200,000 DuPage County residents have been fully vaccinated against this deadly virus.

“DuPage County set an ambitious goal and continues to lead the state in vaccination rates with 80 percent of our eligible population having received their first dose,” said DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin. “We aimed high and our progress is exceptional. It exemplifies what we can accomplish as a community when we work together.”

To encourage vaccinations and expand access with equity, DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) ramped up efforts by introducing new tactics such as walk-in opportunities with evening and weekend hours at the DuPage COVID-19 Community Vaccination Clinic, partnering with EMS to vaccinate homebound individuals alongside DCHD staff, partnering with local businesses and organizations to provide mobile vaccination clinics, and distributing incentives supplied by the State of Illinois.

Although COVID-19 community transmission in DuPage County remains at a “moderate” level, gather-

ings should be kept to smaller groups to allow for physical distancing between guests and, if possible, be held outdoors.

As the more dangerous Delta variant is rapidly spreading in the United States and Illinois, there is an increasing urgency for people to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to help protect themselves and others.

Persons with COVID-19 infection need to self-isolate (e.g., stay home except for medical care) and their close contacts need to self-quarantine and get tested unless they have been fully vaccinated.

Elmhurst University presents President’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching actually having a positive impact on student learning and their experience.

“Being nominated by students for this award this year, provided me with a sense of accomplishment and validation, which means the world to me.”

Students who nominated Professor Hall said her passion for teaching and her disciplinary expertise inspired them in every class. They praised her for constructing intellectually rigorous courses and for presenting content in ways that engage students, meet their learning needs and challenge them to exceed their own expectations.

Hall said that fostering their growth has been one of the best parts about teaching at Elmhurst.

“The close working relationship we have with our students provides them with a stronger sense of belonging and enhances their engagement in learning as well as their overall experience, both in and out of the classroom,” she said. “It is so rewarding to watch them develop into sophisticated thinkers and responsible adults, and I thoroughly enjoy assisting them along their educational journey.”

Karen Benjamin is an Associate Professor of History who has taught at Elmhurst since the 2018. Her research and teaching interests include 20th century U.S. history and race relations, urban and suburban history, and the history of the South.

“It is such an honor to receive this award, and I am humbled to be recognized,” Benjamin said. “My colleagues are incredible, and they inspire me every day. Even more

Elmhurst University recently presented the annual President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching to faculty members Heather Hall, of Elmhurst; and Karen Benjamin, of LaGrange Park.

At the end of each academic year, two faculty members are selected to receive the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, which recognizes exemplary teaching and contributions to the education of Elmhurst students.

“Recipients of this award embody all aspects of our commitment to excellence in teaching and student learning and success, as recognized by their faculty peers and students,” said Dean Pribbenow, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty.

“Karen and Heather are both exemplars of this commitment. They care deeply about their students and how their teaching influences students’ aspirations and ability to connect what they are learning in the classroom to the world around them.”

Heather Hall is a Professor of Kinesiology who has taught at Elmhurst University since 1993. A Clinical Exercise Physiologist® certified by the American College of Sports Medicine, Hall focuses primarily on the scientific aspects of exercise. She said she was “honored and humbled” to receive the award, especially after such a tumultuous academic year.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Assault, battery June 28 Police said an officer responded to Elmhurst Hospital for the report of a sexual assault. The officer met with the attending nurse who related the victim checked herself into the hospital and reported she was sexually assaulted on the above date. The victim refused to meet with law enforcement, refused all tests, and refused to provide any information regarding the incident.

Criminal damage June 22 A complainant in the 200 block of Prospect told police at 2:50 p.m. that an employee found the fountain in front of Wilder Mansion had been knocked over. The cost to repair the damage to the fountain is unknown.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance June 28 A victim in the 500 block of W. Grand told police at 11:13 a.m. that when she confronted the suspect and asked for the return of her car keys, he became physical and grabbed her.

The suspect fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle. A warrant was issued for the suspect’s arrest and will be entered into LEADS. June 27 Ulan Dzhumagulov, 38, of Chicago, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-befouling property in the 100 block of W. North at 3:57 a.m. Police said the suspect was observed urinating next to a dumpster.

A 23-year-old Addison woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 400 block of Addison at 6:16 p.m. A victim told police that subsequent to a verbal argument, the suspect attacked him. Officers observed scratches on the victim.

June 26 A 56-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence in the 100 block of S. York at 9:16 p.m.

A victim told police she and the suspect were involved in a verbal argument, which turned physical. The suspect took the victim’s phone and grabbed the victim causing injury.

June 25 A victim in the 200 block of Yorkfield told police at 2:29 p.m. that while walking her dog in front of the above location, a dog broke free from its tether and attacked her dog. As the victim attempted to separate the dogs, she and her dog were bitten several times.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, illegal possession of alcohol June 27 Rasheed A. Aregbesola, 27, of Hampshire, was charged with DUI, speeding, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at 11:05 p.m.

Marjulia K. Freeney, 29, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, disobeying a traffic control signal, improper lane usage, failure to signal and possession of cannabis by the driver subsequent to a traffic stop near Michigan and North at 1:08 a.m.

Henry S. Gonzalez, 31, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, no insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident subsequent to a traffic crash near Cottage Hill and Adelaide at 12:06 p.m.

June 26 Marcelo Garcia Lopez, 33, of Bensenville, was charged with aggravated DUI, driving while license suspended and illegal transportation of alcohol in the 1000 block of N. York at 6:48 p.m.

June 24 Krystal Corcoles, 23, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Route 83 at 1:46 a.m.

Fleeing, eluding

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported one incident of fleeing and eluding in which drivers of a vehicle or a motorcycle reportedly fled after a traffic stop was conducted.

Obstructing June 28 Mabel Rodriguez, 44, of Joliet, was charged with DUI, obstructing justice, improper lane usage, failure to signal when changing lanes and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at 1:15 a.m.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance June 30 Khaliah Norals, 23, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis by a driver and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Route 83 at 9:27 p.m.

June 27 Jessica Oliver, 25, of Chicago, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis by a passenger in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Cottage Hill at 8:02 p.m.

June 26 Jamisha M. Bryant Evans, 19, of Maywood,

was issued citations for possession of cannabis by the driver and no valid driver’s license subsequent to investigating a disabled vehicle near Route 83 and St. Charles at 3:30 p.m.

Raul Cazres, 22, of Stone Park, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near Spring and Butterfield at 8:09 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances June 23 Police said officers responded with medics for the report of a fall near Edgewood and Vallette at 9:30 p.m. Medics arrived on scene and transported the victim to Loyola University Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

The complainant stated the victim was on a skateboard which was being pulled by a bicycle when he hit a metal plate covering a hole in the roadway. He fell to the ground and struck his head. The victim’s guardian was notified of the incident.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery June 27-June 28 A complainant in the 400 block of W. Butterfield told police that an unknown suspect(s) stole her 2011 black Kia Sorrento while it was parked on the apron of her driveway. The complainant left the vehicle’s key fob inside of the unlocked vehicle. The vehicle was entered into LEADS. It was located by Franklin Park police the following day and removed from LEADS. June 26-June 28 A complainant in the 400 block of Spring told police that an unknown suspect mailed a letter and a check to him. The letter instructed the victim to deposit the check, purchase Walmart gift cards as a secret shopper, and text the gift cards and their security information to the suspect. The complainant attempted to cash the check and learned the check was fraudulent.

June 25-June 28 Theft of vehicle parts was reported at a business in the 700 block of N. York. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed catalytic converters from two of the company’s Isuzu box trucks, which were parked in the rear parking lot, sometime between the above dates. Each truck had two catalytic converters.

June 17-June 28 Theft and damage to city property were reported near Fremont and Oaklawn. Police said a reporting officer observed the street signs at the intersection were missing. The Fremont Avenue sign was missing and the Oaklawn Avenue sign was partially broken off sometime between the above dates. Public Works was notified.

June 27 Forgery was reported at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North at 4:50 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect provided the pharmacist with a prescription for Promethazine/Codeine. After calling the doctor to verify the prescription’s authenticity, it was found to be fraudulent. An investigation is pending.

June 23-June 27 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of N. Ridgeland. A victim told police that an

unknown suspect(s) used his personal information to fraudulently purchase cell phones.

The suspect attempted to purchase merchandise at an unknown Nordstrom, but the transaction was declined. The victim will sign complaints if the suspect is located.

June 26 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at 2:41 p.m. A victim told police that while checking out after shopping, he could not locate his phone case, which contained his driver’s license, credit cards and cell phone. The victim learned an unknown suspect used his credit card to make fraudulent purchases. After using an application to locate his phone, the victim located his discarded property in a garbage can. An evidence technician processed the recovered items.

June 24 Robert J. Giacomino, 18, of Elmhurst, was charged with retail theft and possession of alcohol by a minor and was issued a no trespass notice at a store in the 100 block of Schiller at 10:07 p.m. According to police, a complainant related that Giacomino proceeded past the last point of sale with a case of beer; but when confronted, left the beer behind and ran from the store. Police said officers located Giacomino, who was found to be in possession of several bottles of alcohol (brands not sold at the store).

Police said a victim’s unlocked running vehicle was taken from a parking lot in the 500 block of W. St. Charles and was abandoned a short distance from the scene. An investigation is pending.

Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of Addison at 9:19 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used her personal information to open a fraudulent Verizon wireless account.

June 14-June 21 Theft was reported in the 400 block of N. York. A victim told police that her wallet containing her driver’s license is missing. She and her roommate believe their new caregiver used their debit card and fraudulently withdrew money from their joint checking account.

June 13 Police said a reporting officer met with a complainant from a restaurant in the 200 block of N. York who stated he believes a former employee had taken cash from a safe. This case is pending investigation.

Dec. 11, 2020 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of Rex. A victim reported that an unknown suspect used his credit card information and made an unauthorized purchase. The victim thought the matter was settled with his bank until he received a collections letter. The victim requested a police report to show the collections agency the purchase was fraudulent.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported one incident of identity theft with the intention of using a victim’s personal information to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

The Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network (EWAN) was one of 37 DuPage County not-for-profit organizations to receive a grant through DuPage Foundation’s Spring Community Needs Grant Program (Community Needs or CNGP). DuPage Foundation awarded $702,860, a new record amount, to organizations working in the areas of Health & Human Services. EWAN received a grant in the amount of $12,000 to help them provide financial assistance to members of the Elmhurst community experiencing difficult times.

EWAN has been helping local families since 1997. Executive Director Jackie Crnkovich stated that the DuPage Foundation grant came at just the right time.

Nichols, 36, of Villa Park, and Charmaine Sukolowsky, 37, of Itasca, were found to be in possession of cocaine. Nichols also was found to have a suspended driver’s license, a warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office and a warrant for the Bellwood Police Department, according to police.

Police said Sukolowsky was found to have a warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

My work to end the youth vaping epidemic

By U.S. Rep Raja Krishnamoorthi In continuing with my investigation into the youth vaping epidemic, I chaired a hearing recently with the Acting Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Dr. Janet Woodcock, to determine the future of e-cigarettes in the U.S. market.

In the United States, 20 percent of high schoolers vape. These children are becoming addicted to vaping at an age when they are most susceptible to nicotine harming their neurological development.

Dr. Woodcock reiterated the findings from my investigation that flavored e-cigarettes attract children and that JUUL has played a large part in driving this epidemic and public health crisis. During the hearing, I showed internal documents from JUUL indicating that it was aware that its product’s nicotine levels were higher than others in the market and that kids were unknowingly becoming addicted to it.

As we uncovered during the hearing, the FDA’s partial flavor ban for e-cigarettes caused a migration from the company’s fruitier flavors to menthol, due to the menthol flavor exception. As Dr. Woodcock noted during our hearing, this is especially concerning because menthol has unique properties that contribute to heightened nicotine addiction. The FDA’s 2020 ban also caused kids to migrate to disposable cigarettes, which was possible under an exception to their partial flavor ban.

Federal regulators must act swiftly in the best interest of public health with regards to the youth vaping epidemic. The FDA is currently reviewing Premarket Tobacco Product Applications from e-cigarettes manufacturers to determine what products will be allowed on the market. I hope that the FDA considers the impact that these e-cigarette companies are having on the youth vaping epidemic and the health of an entire generation.

Celebration of Juneteenth at the DuSable Museum We were all witnesses to history this year when Juneteenth became a federal holiday, and I was proud to have voted for legislation to recognize this historic anniversary. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the day in 1865 on which General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and freed all those in the area still held in slavery.

Juneteenth is about reflecting on our history of racial discrimination and the progress we’ve made, while also recognizing the challenges we still face today. I was grateful for the opportunity to attend the reopening of the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago on June 19.

Chicago is fortunate to have the oldest independent black history museum in the nation. With every exhibit and program, it encourages the appreciation of the achievements, culture, art, and experiences of African Americans.

Glowiak Hilton commends Illinois’ first bond upgrade in 20 years

Moody’s Investor Services has upgraded Illinois’ General Obligation bond rating for the first time in more than 20 years, and State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) is crediting the General Assembly’s work to get the state to this point.

“Moody’s upgrade indicates our state is making responsible budgetary decisions—it should give Illinois taxpayers a sense of relief,” Glowiak Hilton said. “By enacting balanced budgets and prioritizing fiscal stability in recent years, we’ve put Illinois on a path to a brighter future.”

Moody’s Investors Services, one of the nation’s primary credit rating agencies, recently upgraded Illinois’ General Obligation bonds a step closer

to the top rating. The upgrade signals a more stable outlook for Illinois’ economy, meaning state borrowing will cost less, which will in turn save taxpayers money.

The analysis highlighted the Fiscal Year 2022 budget for the upgrade.

Moody’s stated increased pension contributions, repayment of emergency Federal Reserve borrowings, and constrained use of federal aid from the American Rescue Plan Act are to thank for the increased rating.

This is the second positive rating action for Illinois in a week, following an outlook improvement from Fitch.

Words to live by, part 2 — compassion

Merriam-Webster defines compassion as, “sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.”

Previously, I’ve postulated an idea related to the vastness of life’s purpose — an idea so wide-reaching it can be summed up in seven words. Can a mere seven words help us establish a focus on the meaning of life? Perhaps.

In fact, I’m willing to bet on it.

Because I’ve come to believe that life is much more simple than it is complicated.

Seven words might actually be superfluous. We could probably do with less. But let’s stick with them anyway; seven is a nice round number.

The first word (the subject of last week’s column) was kindness. This week, I focus on compassion — the act of understanding and identifying with the sorrows of other people, while at the same time wanting to ease them. It’s a desire to help those who are suffering. It’s needing to help someone who needs help.

The world today could benefit from more compassion.

We live in a me-focused society.

What do I have? What more do I want? Why am I happy or (more importantly) unhappy? What more can the universe deliver to me?

If not the universe, how about Amazon?

It’s too often all about me, instead of you or them or, more importantly, we.

Our decidedly inward focus causes us to tune out the needs of others.

Spirito to sing at Carnegie Hall Spirito Singers has announced that its 2021-22 Season will include innovative electives as well as a tour of Carnegie Hall in New York City for the Bravura Ensemble.

Rehearsals for the Ragazze Ensemble, a training ensemble comprised of 5th-8th grade treble singers, will include weekly elective classes designed to strengthen singers’ musicianship.

Singers begin with multi-level theory training and will continue with new offerings in vocal technique, composition, songwriting, conducting

and more. Singers have the choice of Monday or Tuesday night rehearsals.

There are changes for the high school-age Bravura Ensemble as well.

In addition to participating in an elite choral ensemble, the Bravura singers will develop their musicianship skills through elective classes which will be held on Sunday afternoons after the choral rehearsal. Singers’ elective options will include solo vocal technique, composition, audition bootcamp, conducting, songwriting and theory refresher. Bravura singers can

This summer, the Elmhurst History Museum is all about the moon and space travel, in particular commemorating two historic NASA missions that took place more than 50 years ago: Apollo 10 and Apollo 11.

Since May, “To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA,” a touring exhibit from the Charles M. Schulz Museum, has been on display in the museum’s gallery with images, artifacts and details related to the Apollo 10 mission and Snoopy’s role in NASA’s Manned Flight Safety Awareness program. Apollo 10 was known as a “dress rehearsal” for the moon landing, which took place during Apollo 11’s momentous voyage from July 16 to July 24, 1969.

Starting July 1, the Elmhurst History Museum will add to the “Snoopy Soars with NASA” visitor experience with a pop-up poster exhibit outdoors

on the museum’s east lawn. “Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission,” from the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Services (SITES), explores what led the United States to accept President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 challenge of “landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.” The resulting 953,054-mile voyage to the Moon and back was accomplished just eight years after the program was authorized.

About the exhibit “Destination Moon” examines the mission and recognizes the sacrifices and devotion of more than 400,000 people employed in NASA programs who worked through the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of the 20 missions that preceded Apollo 11 from 1961 to 1969. The exhibit features official NASA photographs of the mission

and crew, which included astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Commander; Michael Collins, Command Module Pilot; and Edwin E. “Buzz” Aldrin, Lunar Module Pilot.

“Destination Moon” and “Snoopy Soars with NASA” will run concurrently at the Elmhurst History Museum through Sunday, Aug. 29. In addition to the exhibits, the museum is presenting a number of programs and activities in the coming weeks including free Museum Maker Monday programs for families (July 12 and Aug. 9); an online pre-recorded lecture, “Apollo 10: Dress Rehearsal for the Moon” (available July 22 thru Aug. 29); a free concert featuring the music of Vince Guaraldi on the museum grounds (Saturday, Aug. 7); and a Lunar Cartooners family workshop on Saturday, July 17.

Despite the hardships of the pandemic, 2020 was still a strong year for the DuPage County economy with growth in numerous sectors and a positive outlook for the future, according to the annual Projects Report for 2020, released by Choose DuPage.

The report indicates that 147 new businesses located in DuPage, representing $516 million invested, 405 jobs created or retained and 11.8M square-feet of new or improved space.

Elmhurst Hospital celebrates 10th anniversary Ten years ago – on June 25, 2011 -- Elmhurst Hospital opened a $450 million, state-of-the-art hospital at the corner of York Street and Roosevelt Road. A decade later, the hospital’s over 2,600 employees continue to deliver on its commitment to person-centered care.

“It is hard for me to believe that it has been ten years since we opened the new hospital’s doors,” said Pamela Dunley, president and CEO, Elmhurst Hospital.

“After years of planning, designing and building, we marked the beginning of new ways to heal, new ways to work, and new ways to practice medicine.”

Inspired by the Planetree organization, symbols of the commitment to treating mind, body and spirit are present throughout the building. Represented in the form of a stylized sycamore leaf, they signify Elmhurst Hospital’s holistic healing philosophy.

“We have created a unique healthcare experience at Elmhurst Hospital,” said Dunley. “Our dedication to the Planetree philosophy is fully evident in the private suites, calming and comfortable accommodations, seamless integration, and state-of the-art technology – all designed with the patient at the forefront.”

Hospital planners also made a decision to employ standardization to promote safety and efficiency.

After 36 months of construction, it took four hours to transfer 101 patients by ambulance from the original 85-year-old Elmhurst Hospital on Berteau Avenue into private suites at the new 866,000-squarefoot, 259-bed Elmhurst Hospital at 155 E. Brush Hill Road.

Two charged in death of Westmont nursing home resident On Thursday, July 1, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Westmont Chief of Police Jim Gunther announced that charges had been filed against two employees of a Westmont nursing home for their alleged roles in the death of a 96-year-old female resident in February, 2021. Bert Mongreig, 63, of Bolingbrook, each appeared at a hearing where bond was set at $50,000 with 10% to apply for both Mongreig and Dhall in accordance with a previously issued arrest

Emeralds win

The Elmhurst Emeralds 12U travel softball team, part of Elmhurst Baseball & Softball League — Elmhurst’s oldest and largest youth baseball/softball organization — won the Old Glory Classic tournament title in Montgomery over Fourth of July weekend. The Emeralds started the tournament with a 3-1 win over the Lady Hawks and then dropped a 10-3 game to the Windy City Rage in their final pool play game. Elmhurst, the No. 4 bracket seed, downed Mokena Blast 11U 10-5 in the

Elmhurst American Legion baseball team gets season going

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 17U baseball team is up and running with its 2021 season.

After opening the season against Kenosha-Bradford in Crystal Lake in a tournament cut short by rain, Post 187 played games in its own Muddog Classic tournament held at Community Park in Addison.

Elmhurst, under the direction of former IC Catholic Prep baseball player and current North Park University senior pitcher Brendan Russ, opened play with a 16-3 loss to the Illinois Seminoles.

Post 187 trailed 4-2 heading into the sixth inning. “We got into some trouble and then everything hit the fan,” Russ said. “We got blown out toward the end, but I thought we played pretty well.”

Elmhurst was no-hit in its sea-

son-opener against Kenosha-Bradford (a 9-0 setback) in Crystal Lake at Lippold Park.

“We have been missing some guys in these early games,” Russ noted.

“Once we get all our guys playing together we feel like we can build a bond that help give us some wins.

We’re playing some of these games with nine and 10 guys. When we have everybody and have a full roster with reserves, it’s going to make a major difference. We’ll be able to add a couple of arms to the bullpen that will definitely help. We will have some depth in the rotation as well. Once those guys are active, we should be able to compete with anybody.”

Some key contributors for the Muddogs so far have been Connor West (IC Catholic Prep, 2B), Luke Murray (IC Catholic Prep, pitcher-1B), Greg Lee (York, CF) and Jack Kossak (York, pitcher-OF) and Abra-

ham Otero (Fenton, SS-CF).

“I like our work ethic,” Russ said.

“Everybody wants to win. Our team is dedicated enough and puts in the work outside of practice. Work ethic and determination are going to make this team succeed. These guys hate losing. They are expecting to turn it around really quick.”

Russ has seen improvements already. “After practices (last week) and some drill work we put up some runs (against Illinois Seminoles) in the first inning and had eight or nine hits off a pretty solid pitcher,” he pointed out.

“Our hitting is definitely on the way up. We are improving on that. Defensively, I feel like everybody knows where they have to be. Guys know where to back up. We will absolutely continue to get better.”

In the loss to Illinois Seminoles, the Muddogs had four hits. Lee and Kossak each had two hits. Kossak stole

three bases in the contest.

In a 10-2 loss to Stevensville, Michigan in the Addison tournament, West and Anthony Cira (IC Catholic Prep) each had two hits for the Muddogs. Otero and Cira each had an RBI, while West had a double.

In a 6-2 loss to the Chicago Stars in Addison tournament play, West had two hits, while Kossak had one hit.

Kossak stole two more bases for Post 187.

Murray pitched the first five innings for Post 187 and fanned six batters.

Post 187 was slated to play Valparaiso Junior Legion earlier this week before heading north to the Beach Ball Slugfest in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. Elmhurst is slated to open the tournament against the Genoa City Predators and will have a rematch with the Chicago Stars. Both games are Friday night.

Elmhurst is also scheduled to play

in tournaments at Olivet Nazarene University and Northern Illinois University, plus will make a trip to Stevensville, Michigan for a twin bill Sunday July 25.

The American Legion 2nd Division state playoffs are slated to kick off Monday, July 26. Wheaton/Carol Stream Legion Post 76 is the host.

Games will be played at Lee Pfund Stadium in Wheaton. The state tournament is scheduled to start Aug. 5.

Muddogs program director Mike Biondo noted Post 187 is hoping to host the American Legion Midwest regional in 2023. Midland, Michigan is hosting in 2021 and 2022. Elmhurst was slated to host in 2020 prior to the onset of the pandemic.

Biondo also told the Independent the Muddogs are hoping to also field its traditional 19U senior Legion team next year in addition to the 17U team it has this year.

What is the delta variant and should we be worried?

What do we know about the delta variant?

The WHO has noted the delta variant, which was first identified in India, is now spreading in more than 60 countries, including the U.S. The B.1.6172 (delta) variant was estimated by Public Health England to be 60% more transmissible than the alpha variant, which was 50% more transmissible than the original virus. Patients infected with the delta variant have higher levels of virus detected in the airways than the alpha variant. Like the gamma variant, it is more resistant to neutralization by antibodies. The delta variant was responsible for many of the cases in India during spring 2021.

In the United Kingdom, over three quarters of the adult population has received at least on dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and as a result, cases and deaths plummeted from a high of 60,000 cases a day in January to 2,000 a day by May 7. At the end of May 2021, cases began to rise again to 7,000 a day, by June 7, with 90% due to the delta variant. Hospitalizations have also increased. An early analysis suggests the likelihood of hospitalization in patients infected with the delta variant is twice that compared to those infected with the alpha variant.

Should we be worried about the delta variant?

Fully vaccinated people are less likely to get infected and unlikely to get severe infection. While the delta variant is more contagious and causes more severe illness, the two-dose COVID-19 vaccines can effectively neutralize it.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was 88% effective against the strain after the second dose, but just 33 percent effective after one dose. The Moderna vaccine would likely provide similar protection. While the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) one-dose vaccine has not been studied against the strain, it is likely to provide significant protection.

Kelly announced that bond had been set for a Des Plaines man accused of multiple drug and weapons charges following a high-speed pursuit late last month.

Jesser Oaxaca, 32, of Des Plaines, appeared before Judge Brian Telander who set bond at $500,000 (10%) and granted the State’s motion for a proof-of-funds hearing for Oaxaca. That hearing will require Oaxaca to prove that any funds used

to post bond were not received from illegal means, should he make bond.

Oaxaca has been charged with one count of Cannabis Trafficking – more than 5,000 grams (Class X Felony), one count of Manufacture/ Delivery of Cannabis – more than 5,000 grams (Class X Felony), one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony) and one count of Calculated Criminal Cannabis Conspiracy (Class 3 Felony).

What are the variants of concern that are now circulating in the U.S. and in Illinois?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently re-named the SARS-CoV2 variants of concern: alpha, beta, gamma, epsilon and delta.

The B.117 (alpha) variant is more transmissible than previous variants, but antibodies from vaccination can neutralize it nearly as well as the original strain. The alpha variant became the predominant variant in the United Kingdom during the fall of 2020-21. Predictions that the alpha variant would become predominant in the U.S. held true, rising from less than 1% of cases in January to 69.5% of cases by the end of May 2021.

The B.1.351 (beta) variant predominant in South Africa, and the P1 (gamma) variant predominant in South America, are also more transmissible, but they carry more worrisome mutations that result in decreased antibody neutralization of the virus.

While antibodies from patients who recovered from COVID-19 do not neutralize the alpha or gamma variants, antibodies from patients who were vaccinated with a Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine do neutralize the virus. This is because vaccination elicits antibody levels several fold higher than after natural infection.

The gamma variant increased to 8% of cases nationally and 24% in Illinois by the end of May 2021, while the beta variant was 0.7% national-

ly and 1.3% in Illinois. The gamma variant is also resistant to the monoclonal antibodies bamlanivimab+etesevimab but still susceptible to casirivimab+imdevimab.
