Kaczmarek reports highest-ever vote turnout; credits mail-in, early voting

Even at press time on Tuesday, July 5, the results of the General Primary Election held Tuesday, June 28 were still unofficial, but following is the most recent update from the story published on Election night.

According to information provided by the DuPage Election Commission, DuPage County had a 21.95% turnout with 139,673 ballots cast out of 636,341 registered voters. It is interesting to note that 22,559 Early Voting Ballots were tabulated. A total of 34,518 Vote-By-Mail ballots were requested from the County, while the number of Vote-By-Mail ballots actually tabulated was 20,981. This is an increase of 184 votes over what was reported on Election night.

On Friday, July 1, DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek issued a release indicating that a retabulation of the results of the June 28 General Primary Election would commence on Thursday, July 7 at 9 a.m. in room 1-500A of the Jack T. Knuepfer building of the DuPage County Complex in Wheaton. The retabulation will be open to the public, in accordance with the restrictions in the Governor’s executive order. Any questions on the retabulation can be directed to the Election Division at 630-407-5600.

Highest-ever vote turnout, says Kaczmarek DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek announced last week that the county had the highest voter turnout in the region of nearly 22 percent in the 2022 Midterm Primary Election, combined with a successful launch of new voting equipment and the Vote Anywhere initiative.

“We broke several records for a Midterm Primary,” said Kaczmarek.

“We had over 22,000 voters during Early Voting, exceeding the 2018 Primary. We also had close to 35,000 mail ballot applications – six times the number from 2018. Increasing the number of Early Voting sites and sending mail ballot applications and election information to all registered voters paid off.”

The 2022 Primary was also the first election using the new 100-percent paper voting system. Last fall, the County Clerk’s office replaced its 20-year-old Diebold equipment with the Hart InterCivic Verity system for both Early Voting and Election Day. DuPage is the first county in Illinois to use the complete print-on-demand system, selected for its top security, transparency and user-friendliness.

Cindy Cronin Cahill earns spot on ballot

The Independent was invited to the home of Elmhurst resident Cindy Cronin Cahill on the evening of the General Primary Election on Tuesday, June 28, where she sailed comfortably into securing a spot on the ballot in the General Election.

She hovered between second and third place in the race, in which the top three vote-getters earned a place on the November ballot.

The most votes went to long-time

incumbent Sam Tornatore with 4,835; Cronin Cahill was second with 4,392, followed by another incumbent, Addison resident Donald Puchalski who garnered 4,285 votes. These three candidates will square off against Democrat Michael L. Childress.

Following her victory, the Independent interviewed Cronin Cahill, who was all smiles and humbly honored by the results, after working hard and running a clean campaign.

“After raising my family and working at my business, it’s time to step up and give back to the community again,” she said.

Asked if anything surprised her, she said she found it hard to believe when she was the only candidate out of five to show up to participate in the Elmhurst League of Women Voters’ Candidate’s Forum.

“When I received the invitation from the League to participate, I sat right down and filled out all the information they asked for and sent

it in,” she said. “Then that Sunday, I was the only one who showed up to participate! I couldn’t really believe it. The League wouldn’t allow me to do anything since the other candidates were not there.”

In the race for the Republican nomination for DuPage County Board Chair, Greg Hart did not attend the forum either, but Pete DiCianni was there.

“Greg Hart wasn’t there, but Pete DiCianni was and he was at least allowed to make a brief statement,”

Cronin Cahill said. “Eventually, since he was given a short time to speak, they allowed me to make a statement as well.

“I don’t blame the League, but it’s really frustrating to do the things you’re supposed to do and then, be

The Elmhurst History Museum invites the public to officially pay homage to Chicago’s most famous food icons—namely the “big three” of pizza, hot dogs and Italian beef—at a free event on the museum grounds.

The Picnic on Park celebration takes place on Sunday, July 10 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Elmhurst History Museum, located at 120 E. Park Ave. in downtown Elmhurst. Families and foodies of all ages are invited to explore the new exhibit, “Eat Your Heart Out: Iconic Chicagoland Foods,” inside the Glos Mansion to learn about the history of Chicago’s three pillars of food fame. The celebration spills out onto the museum’s lawn where Picnic on Park participants can take part in food-centric games and activities

and enjoy live music.

Picnic on Park event highlights The Oscar Meyer Wienermobile will be showcased along with other photo ops, and the Original Rainbow Cone truck will be on hand serving up free small cones to the first 300 patrons (one/person, additional ice cream for sale after giveaway).

Free face painters, fun games and crafts will be available for kids while supplies last. Live music by the Scottie Long Duo will be performed from at 1:45 p.m. and energetic family favorite Leonardo Music will take the stage at 3 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating.

Metropolitan Family Services moves to Centennial Recreation Center Centennial Recreation Center (CRC), located at 155 E. St. Charles Road, opened earlier this month and is the new home for senior programming at the Park District. It also is the new home for Metropolitan Family Services DuPage, increasing the visibility and access to this valuable program for seniors in the community.

The City of Elmhurst contracts with Metropolitan Family Services to provide counseling and other support services to seniors and senior caregivers that were previously located at City Hall. This month, both the Elmhurst City Council and the Park District Board of Commissioners approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two organizations, authorizing the move.

The decision to move Metropol-

itan Family Services is a collaborative effort between both entities to provide seniors easy access to both recreational and social services under one roof.

“It’s a great example of cooperation between our two governmental entities that’s in the interest of our city residents,” said Alderman Deuter at the June 6 City Council Meeting.

Under the terms of the agreement, the City of Elmhurst will continue to contract with Metropolitan to fund clinical and administrative supervision of two licensed social workers while the Park District will provide workspace for Metropolitan and enable the organization to use the facility’s programming rooms for Adult Social Service offerings.

Asked about the campaign, Cronin Cahill said she was proud of the work she and her volunteer organization had done. She spoke out about being annoyed that DiCianni attacked her in one of his direct mail pieces, when she wasn’t even his opponent. On top of it, DiCianni’s claim about her was not even true, she said.

“He went on the attack against Dan [Cronin, retiring County Board Chair and also her brother] and I was in it, too!” she said. “In an attempt to attack Hart, DiCianni went after Dan and I was just really surprised at the tone of the piece. The attack was really bad, even slamming the fact that Dan went to Fenwick High School. I don’t understand that at all.

“What really bothered me is that Dan has done an outstanding job as Board Chair, he’s an outstanding leader, he has saved the taxpayers a great deal of money, he’s worked with such integrity, it was just upsetting to have him attacked like that – when he wasn’t

even seeking re-election! He had already stepped down and announced his retirement. Why attack him? None of it made any sense. And why would anyone attack where someone went to high school?”

Cronin Cahill also pointed out an error in the mail piece, which claimed that she had stepped down as Elmhurst City Treasurer before her term ended.

A claim that was not only untrue, but also a move DiCianni had made when he was mayor of Elmhurst, she said.

“First of all, I completed my full term as Elmhurst City Treasurer,” she said. “I did not step down or resign before my term was completed [as the mail piece claimed]. What’s interesting about that attack is that DiCianni is the one who never completed his term.

He resigned before completing his full term as mayor in order to run for the County Board, and yet he brags about the fact he is the former mayor of Elmhurst all the time.

“I don’t like attack pieces but if you’re going to attack, you need to get your facts straight.”

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Miguel Gurrola, 25, of Chicago, was issued citations for illegal transportation of open alcohol and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop in the 600 block of W. North at 1:36 a.m.

Jessica Huerte, 35, of Montgomery, was charged with DUI, disobeying a traffic control device and illegal transportation of open alcohol subsequent to a traffic stop near Spring and St. Charles at 5:01 a.m.

Assault, battery June 28 A reporting officer met with a victim near York and Butterfield at 10:30 p.m. who reported he was assaulted while he was a passenger on a Pace bus at the above location. The victim stated two unknown suspects—one described as a black male between 45-50 years old, and the other a black female— boarded the bus and began harassing and threatening him. One of the suspects used her hands to knock the victim’s hat off of his head. This case is pending investigation.

June 23 A complainant at a pub in the 100 block of N. Addison told police at 11:50 p.m. that a suspect smacked her phone out of her hand and struck her in the face. There were no signs of injuries and due to conflicting statements, no arrests were made.

Criminal damage June 22-June 28 Anthony Romano, 35, of Elmhurst, was charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm in the 300 block of S. Oakland Grove. Police said a victim reported he located what appeared to be a bullet inside the siding of his garage. The victim stated his neighbor also located damage from a hole in their garage, according to police. A reporting officer met with Romano, who police said admitted to clearing his gun and accidentally firing a 9MM round in his garage sometime in the past week. Romano also was charged with criminal damage to property in the 200 block of S. Pick. Police said that during an investigation Romano admitted to firing his BB gun recently, and accidentally put multiple BB holes into the side of the victim’s garage.

June 26 Police said a reporting officer met with the victim at a hotel in the 900 block of Riverside who reported he discovered several parts of his vehicle were damaged while parked in the parking lot overnight.

June 25-June 26 Police said officers responded to the 100 block of N. Maple for reported criminal damage to property. A reporting officer met with the victim who reported sometime overnight, one of the first-floor windows was damaged by a metal pellet.

June 22 A victim in the 400 block of N. Oaklawn reported at 7:45 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) used paint and a marker in two bathroom stalls at Berens Park.

June 23 Kevin Jamison, 28, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct-disturbing the peace and assault in the 400 block of S. Argyle at 11:21 p.m. According to police, a victim relates, while making a delivery, Jamison approached him in an aggressive manner, knocked his phone out of his hand and yelled profanities.

Claudia D. Villanueva, 34, of Franklin Park, was charged with disorderly conduct/false crime report near North and Oak at 3:44 p.m.

Police said that upon arrival, officers spoke with Villanueva who related subsequent to a road rage incident, someone exited his vehicle and pointed a gun at her. After further investigation, police said it was determined a gun was never seen and was falsely reported by Villanueva.

A 45-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 900 block of S. Hillside at 5:22 p.m. A victim told police that subsequent to an argument, the suspect grabbed her and pushed her. The victim had visible fresh marks which was a result of the suspect grabbing her.

Police said that Subsequent to a check on well-being in the 400 block of E. Vallette at 7:54 p.m., it was discovered the victim was involved in a domestic battery. The victim reports her boyfriend pushed her against the wall, causing her to cut herself and left the residence with her cell phone. This case is pending investigation.

DUI, DUI-drugs, transportation of open alcohol, possession of open alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor June 29 Nick Nastos, 42, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI near York and Crescent at 8:31 p.m.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported one incident of fleeing and eluding during which the driver of a vehicle fled the scene after being stopped for a traffic stop by police.

Harassment, threats May 29-June 29 A reporting officer was informed that an unknown elderly suspect had been calling a business in the 100 block of N. York approximately three to five times a day for the past month inquiring about waxing treatments. An investigation is pending.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported four incidents of possession of cannabis by either the driver of a vehicle or a passenger: Joanna Carabello, 30, of Franklin Park, near Grand and Wilson at 9:13 a.m. June 26; Charles Manning, 34, of Chicago, in the 300 block of W. Butterfield at 11:32 p.m. June 26; Leonor Guzman, 39, of Franklin Park, near Butterfield and Linden at 8:42 p.m. June 27; and Nadia Zabek, 31, of Elmwood Park, near Grand and Industrial at 9:09 p.m.

Production of cannabis June 24 In public view, police said more than 40 recreational cannabis plants were observed growing on a property in the 800 block of S. Hillside. An unnamed suspect was placed under arrest and transported to the police station.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery June 29 Theft was reported near Schiller and Willow at 6:26 a.m. Police said an un-

known suspect(s) removed the stop sign at the southeast corner of Willow. The Public Works Department was notified of the damage and responded to the area to put up a temporary stop sign.

Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of N. Addison at 5:23 p.m. A victim filed for unemployment through the Illinois Department of Employment Security and was advised his personal information was attached to a business he never worked for and wages are being reported under his Social Security number.

June 28 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of S. Hawthorne at 7:51 p.m. A victim reported that an unknown suspect entered her unsecured vehicle and removed cash. The victim reported she observed an unknown suspect standing near her vehicle and confronted the suspect. The unknown suspect fled on foot eastbound on Alexander Blvd.

Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of E. Schiller at 6:54 p.m. A victim reported that an unknown suspect(s) used his banking information to complete two fraudulent purchases in New York. While on the phone with his bank, a third attempt was made.

June 26-June 28 Identity theft was reported at Elmhurst Hospital. A victim told police that on three different occasions, an unknown person(s) attempted to fill prescriptions using his name.

June 26 Identity theft was reported at a restaurant in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at 7:12 p.m.

A reporting officer met with the complainant who reported an online food order had been fraudulently placed using the victim’s account information. The reporting officer met with a male subject who stated he used an app which would give discounts on food.

Upon further investigation it was learned an unknown suspect used the victim’s account to pay for the food order and collected a discounted amount using an online money transfer app. The victim was notified of the compromised account.

June 15 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of N. Emory at 3:42 p.m. A victim reported that an unknown suspect(s) made several attempts to open a credit card account using her information. The victim reported the fraudulent activity to the credit bureaus.

November, 2021 to June, 2022 Theft was reported in the 200 block of E. Park. A reporting officer met with the victim who reported an unknown suspect(s) removed a package from the common area. The package was delivered to an area which can be accessed by the residents.

May 10 Identity theft was reported in the 800 block of S. Kearsage. An unknown suspect(s) filed for unemployment benefits using a victim’s identity.

April 12-April 28 Theft was reported in the 300 block of E. Ridge. A victim reported an unknown suspect(s) altered a check and cashed it sometime between the above dates. The victim reported the theft to her bank and was reimbursed. An investigation is pending.

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 3,435,405 cases, including 34,150 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois since the beginning of the pandemic.

IDPH announces federal allocation of monkeypox vaccines as part of national response The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced that as part of a national strategy to address the ongoing outbreak of monkeypox virus, the State of Illinois is receiving an immediate allocation of vaccines from the national stockpile.

The IDPH will initially receive 1,291 doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine while the Chicago Department of Public Health will be receiving a separate initial allocation of 3,200 doses.

Federal authorities said the number of vaccine doses available is expected to increase substantially during the coming months. At the same time, the CDC is taking steps to increase testing capacity.

To date, the CDC is reporting 46 probable monkeypox virus cases in Illinois, with the vast majority in the City of Chicago and the remaining cases in Cook, DuPage, Kane and Lake counties. Nationally, the CDC is reporting 351 cases in 28 states and the District of Columbia.

Monkeypox virus is a disease that does not spread easily between peo-

ple without close contact and the threat of monkeypox to the general U.S. population remains low.

The vaccine doses distributed to IDPH will be available in counties that have experienced at least one case of the virus. The vaccine will be designated for individuals at higher risk of exposure, which includes those who have had close physical contact with someone diagnosed with monkeypox virus or presumed exposure to the virus. It will also be available for those at occupational risk of exposure, such as lab workers, selected clinicians, and response team members.

The strategy aims to mitigate the spread of the virus in communities where transmission has been the highest and with populations most at risk.

The CDC is tracking multiple clusters of monkeypox that have been reported since the first case in the U.S. was confirmed on May 18.

These cases include individuals who self-identify as men who have sex with men. The CDC is urging health-

care providers in the U.S. to be alert for patients who have rash illnesses consistent with monkeypox.

Anyone, regardless of sexual orientation, can spread monkeypox through contact with body fluids, monkeypox sores, or shared items (such as clothing and bedding) that have been contaminated with fluids or sores of a person with monkeypox.

Monkeypox virus can also spread between people through respiratory droplets typically in a close setting, such as the same household or a healthcare setting. Common household disinfectants can kill the monkeypox virus.

Thirty-five young people with Down syndrome and their peers will gather at Elmhurst University from July 17 to July 23 for the PALS Chicago camp.

This is the eighth summer that PALS Chicago is being held at Elmhurst University, a partnership that began in 2013. During the week, each partner with Down syndrome is paired with a peer without Down syndrome. Throughout the camp, the pairs will stay in campus accommodations while enjoying activities and experiences on campus and throughout the region. Joy and sorrow

Tonight the sunset was beyond spectacular. It sat low and sinking in the sky in every shade of orange imaginable, plus a dozen or so hues that haven’t been invented yet. Two loons floated serenely on the glassy waters of the lake, their silhouettes small and dark in the foreground amongst the orange symphony overhead.

We’d had an early evening summer storm, which gave the landscape a surreal misty feel of yellow twinged twilight.

The grass remained green through the yellow haze. The air was warm, but the breeze by the lake was just cool enough to take the edge off the heat.

As a backdrop, the frogs’ songs were louder than a rock concert, with the loon calls serving as their chorus.

Clouds quilted the horizon, adding even more depth and texture to the color-scape. They hung low in the sky, competing with the sun for leading role in the ending of this day.

The clouds were magnificent, but in the end, the sun won out.

I used my state-of-the-art mega, megapixel camera with super duper zooming capacity to try to capture my view from the end of the dock, but photos simply can’t do justice compared to the real thing. Mother Nature beats megapixels any day (or in this case night.) I put down my phone and indulged in a moment to simply take it all in.

It was joyous and breathtaking, and it brought me to tears because beauty that great, when one truly beholds it for what it is in that moment, can be overwhelming.

It was wonderful. But bittersweet.

Because the beauty of my surroundings, while breathtaking, made me think of my husband and I felt a longing for his presence. He would have loved this particular

sunset. I know he did, because he always loved sunsets, and I’m pretty sure he isn’t missing any of them now.

A wave of grief washed over me in amongst the beauty. Hence the duality of emotions.

As I stood watching the day fade away, soaking in the twilight sky, I was filled with joy and melancholy. I had tears of happiness, but they were also tears of sorrow.

I’ve always been an awesome multi-tasker.

The world can often be bittersweet.

The word itself is a perfect example of the dichotomy of life. The bitter parts don’t negate the overall beauty—or sweetness. Not at all. In some ways, difficulties magnify the beauty, because the losses of life leave you raw and honest and open to the miracles surrounding you every day.

So, as I stood at the end of the dock, listening to the frogs and the loons and breathing in the last moments of a magnificent sunset, I came to a realization: joy and sorrow aren’t always separate entities. They can exist in tandem—together. And that’s OK. It’s possible to cry both happy and sad tears all at the same time. It is possible to find true joy, even when you are hurting.

I’m not sure which is more beautiful—that revelation or the sunset.

Letter to the editor

Reader fed up with receiving no mail My wife made an online request for the post office to hold our mail and resume delivery on Friday, July 1. I wasn’t surprised our mailbox was still empty at 10 p.m. on this day so on Saturday, July 2, I went to the post office to inquire about our mail. A male employee retrieved a few pieces of mail for me and told me the rest of it is in route with a delivery employee and would be delivered today or the next day. I told him if mail was not delivered today (Saturday) I’d have to wait until Tuesday, July 5,

three business days later than we requested. He said they would be delivering mail Sunday, July 3. I was more than skeptical.

Not only did we not get the rest of our mail on July 2, we got no mail on Sunday. This is one of many problems we’ve had with delivery. I wonder how long this will go on. I won’t accept the reason that they are short on help and can’t find people. It seems to me speed and efficiency is this operation are not part of performance evaluation.

The Spirit of ’76: Protecting us against the Putin Playbook

The Independence Day holiday has come and gone, but it’s a good time to reflect on how our most fundamental freedoms have served this nation well.

It’s an even better time to think about what would happen if those liberties were taken away.

Sadly, the latter doesn’t take much imagination in 2022. Your closest video screen will show you scenes of Russian troops pummeling Ukraine with the support of a majority of the Russian people.

The Russian public has been told that their country is doing noble work ferreting out “Nazis” and that the West is engaged in its usual persecution of Russia and its people.

Surveys say most Russians believe it.

In times of war, people always want to see their government as the good guys, but it’s still a little hard to grasp how that many people can be so thoroughly misled.

That’s the power of the Vladimir Putin playbook. The Russian president quickly and with little opposition eliminated the freedoms of speech and press.

First, Putin bandied around

allegations of “fake news,” undermining domestic news media that had far more latitude than their Soviet Union counterparts.

Then he coordinated a plan with the national legislature to pass a law imprisoning those who “lied” about the war, including even calling it a war. Russian media of integrity had to close, and international journalists in Russia had to temper their reporting.

That left the internet as the one avenue for Russians to learn the truth about their country’s misdeeds.

Putin then banned social media outlets and sharply limited access to international news sites.

In short order, the Russian people were isolated, left to believe the lies of their government.

It took just weeks for Putin to wipe out freedoms of press, speech and dissent.

Could anything like that ever happen in the United States? As unlikely as it might seem, there are some areas of concern.

After all, over the past 60 years, certain presidents from both parties have been known to mislead the public about the purpose and progress of wars. And the use of “fake news” claims to evade responsibility began with politicians in this country, only to be adopted by totalitarian leaders around the globe.

Today there are active efforts

to overturn New York Times v.

Sullivan, the 1964 Supreme Court decision that made investigative reporting viable in the United States.

And there are many politicians, again of both parties, who want to control how private social media companies are run.

Do I believe that America could fall victim to something resembling the Putin playbook? No. But it’s also no longer unthinkable.

It’s not a coincidence that the first step would-be dictators take is to shut down the press. That eliminates questions and accountability, both of which are anathema to those who abuse power.

There are some today who choose not to be informed, saying the media are biased. Well, there are tens of thousands of media outlets in this country, including manipulative cable channels, partisan sites that masquerade as news providers and those sites that would entice us with clickbait. But there are also many core news organizations of integrity.

They’re the ones we need to support with readership and subscriptions.

From the very beginning of this nation, Americans understood the importance of a free press aggressively reporting on people in power. In an era when newspapers were fiercely partisan and unfair, that first generation of citizens

The Citizen’s Police Academy is a twelve-week program held at the Elmhurst police station on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. The program will start Aug. 31 and run through Nov. 16. demands, and the laws governing the actions of police officers.

still insisted on journalists being protected by the First Amendment.

That shouldn’t surprise us. After all, the model was right there in 1776 in the document we celebrate this week.

The Declaration of Independence called out King George III, reporting a list of injustices perpetrated by the mother country against its colonies.

We had “unalienable rights,” it said, and they were being violated.

Americans were no longer going to put up with this “long train of abuses and usurpations.”

That is the same spirit with which America’s free press has exercised its duties since 1791.

Abolitionist newspapers took on slavery, suffragist papers focused on injustices against women and news organizations spanning centuries have reported on scandals,

corruption and racial injustice.

We live in a highly polarized time when it’s easy to dismiss the views of those with whom we disagree and deride those who publish the facts we don’t want to acknowledge.

We have to take care, though, that our internal political wars don’t turn us away from the core principles contained in the Declaration of Independence.

We remain a free people and need to be vigilant in protecting our rights and documenting the abuses in people in power, not just when the other guy’s party is in office. That’s the real spirit of ’76.

The surgeries performed by Endeavor Health® Weight Management’s bariatric surgery program include: • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: The stomach is separated into two sections with a special stapling device, creating a small pouch on top. This pouch holds 1-2 ounces of food and becomes the new stomach.

• Vertical sleeve gastrectomy: During this procedure, the surgeon removes about 80 percent of the stomach so that it takes the shape of a tube or sleeve, limiting the amount of food that can be eaten.

• Adjustable gastric band (LapBand): A saline-filled, adjustable band is placed around the stomach, dividing the stomach into a small pouch on top, which restricts food intake.

Temporary tax relief measures under way in Illinois

Illinoisans will receive some modest tax relief starting when the state’s new fiscal year begins (which was Friday, July 1).

That includes some income tax rebates, property tax rebates, a suspension of the state’s 1 percent tax on groceries, and a six-month pause on the scheduled inflationary increase in the state’s motor fuel tax.

Gov. JB Pritzker and legislative Democrats held a news conference publicizing those tax breaks as consumers grappled with 8.6 percent inflation, the highest rate in nearly 40 years.

“We’re sending $1.8 billion in tax relief to Illinois families, and we are able to do that because Democrats balanced the budget, eliminated the bill backlog, and state government is now running a surplus,” Pritzker said at a news conference in Chicago.

The news conference came just two days after the state’s primary elections, marking the kick-off to the general election cycle in which Pritzker and Democrats, who control both chambers of the General Assembly, will be touting their fiscal management of the state.

“Fiscal responsibility means Illinois taxpayers are no longer required to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in needless interest payments,” Pritzker said.

“Instead, we are able to better fund education, rebuild our roads, make our neighborhoods safer, attract new businesses to Illinois, and connect workers with good paying jobs. And starting tomorrow (July 1), every Illinoisan will get tax relief on essentials, gas, groceries and your home.”

The tax relief measures were included in the $46 billion budget lawmakers passed for the fiscal year that began July 1. They include: An income tax rebate of $50 per individual with income below $200,000 a year, or $100 for couples filing jointly with income below $400,000 a year, plus $100 per dependent child, up to

A suspension of the 1 percent sales tax on groceries through June 2023.

A suspension of the scheduled inflationary increase in the motor fuel tax through Dec. 31, which has been estimated at 2.2 cents per gallon. Instead, the motor fuel tax will increase twice at the rate of inflation next calendar year.

A sales tax holiday on back-toschool items, to run from Aug. 5 to Aug. 14, when the rate will be imposed at 1.25 percent instead of the regular 6.25 percent.

And an additional property tax rebate of up to $300 for homeowners who were eligible to claim the property tax credit on their 2021 state tax returns. The rebate is available to joint filers earning $500,000 or less and single filers earning $250,000 or less.

In addition, the tax relief package included a permanent expansion of the state’s earned income tax credit, or EITC, to 20 percent of the federal EITC while also extending eligibility for that credit to noncitizens who file taxes using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number instead of a Social Security Number.

Republicans criticized that package as an election-year gimmick, noting that the rebate checks would show up in people’s mailboxes or bank accounts before Election Day, while motor fuel tax suspension would disappear soon after Election Day.

Bailey wins GOP nomination to challenge Pritzker CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

State Sen. Darren Bailey, who gained statewide notoriety challenging Gov. JB Pritzker’s pandemic executive order authority in court, will be the incumbent’s challenger in the November general election.

As of about 9 p.m. June 28, Bailey had carried more than 55 percent of the GOP vote from a field of six candidates, while tallies were unofficial.

“Tonight our movement sent a clear message to the establishment and the political elites: We will not be ignored,” Bailey said in a victory speech just before 9 p.m.

Bailey, a farmer from downstate Xenia, gained the endorsement of former President Donald Trump over the weekend. He surged late in the race behind at least $17 million in funding—either directly to his campaign fund or to political action committees attacking his opponent— from Republican megadonor and shipping supply magnate Richard Uihlein.

Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin, the early frontrunner in the race who received $50 million from another GOP megadonor, Citadel founder Ken Griffin, conceded about 8:25 p.m.

The battle of billionaire benefactors which ended in Bailey’s nomination drew national attention, largely because a campaign committee that has received funding from Pritzker—the Democratic Governors Association—spent approximately $26 million to influence the Republican primary, largely on ads attacking Irvin and emphasizing Bailey’s conservative record.

The Irvin campaign pegged the total anti-Irvin or pro-Bailey spending

by Democrats around $36 million, with Pritzker’s campaign spending $6.5 million and the Democratic Party of Illinois spending $3.6 million.

In a concession speech, Irvin wished Bailey well, later saying, “the Republican Party must be a party of policies, not personalities.”

“You know, our background, our record and our message were so compelling, so overwhelmingly likely to prevail in November, JB Pritzker and the Democratic Party spent the most amount of money in the history … meddling in a Republican primary to take us down,” said Irvin, a combat veteran who would have been the first Black nominee for Illinois governor from either major political party.

As the tides shifted toward Bailey in recent weeks, Irvin adopted a new line of attack, repeatedly saying “a vote for Darren Bailey is a vote for JB Pritzker,” arguing that the governor put his dollars behind Bailey because he judged him as the weakest candidate.

Bailey earlier in the campaign didn’t disagree with the take that Pritzker viewed him as a weak candidate, but he warned Pritzker to “be careful what you wish for.” He has stated his intent to reshape the state’s GOP as a more conservative entity, including by endorsing primary challengers of incumbent Republican state lawmakers.

“We’re all here because we know that Illinois is in trouble,” Bailey said. “Decade after decade of mismanagement in Springfield. Back-toback billionaire governors who don’t understand the struggles of working people. And where has that gotten us? Nowhere.”

Jesse Sullivan, a Petersburg venture capitalist who along with Irvin was carrying about 15 percent of the GOP primary vote as of 9 p.m. said he called Bailey to say he was glad to lose to a man of faith.

“Now it’s all of our job to get behind Darren and make sure that we go and try to beat JB Pritzker,” he said.

Bailey’s nomination sets up a general election contest pitting Pritzker’s progressive track record against a candidate who is far to the right of previous leaders of the state’s Republican party.

Pritzker, meanwhile, has touted Illinois’ firmer fiscal footing since he became governor, pointing to a $1 billion contribution to the state’s “rainy day” fund, an added $500 million pension payment beyond statutory levels and about $900 million spent to pay down other interest-accruing health insurance debts.

“Four years ago I told you that we’d reverse the fiscal damage that Bruce Rauner did to this state, that I would end his hostage taking of the budget, reverse his credit downgrades and improve our state’s finances,” Pritzker said in a speech that concluded just before 10 p.m.

June 28. “Today we’ve had four balanced budgets in four years. We put a billion dollars in the state’s rainy day fund. We reduced our state’s pension liability and now we’ve received six credit upgrades.”

Bailey is expected to continue his criticism of Pritzker over the issues of rising crime, high taxes and support for law enforcement, while abortion rights will also be a central issue.

During his first term, Pritzker signed a sweeping abortion rights bill, the Reproductive Health Act, as well as legislation repealing a law requiring abortion providers to notify the parents of a minor child seeking an abortion.

He is also calling a special session of the General Assembly in the coming weeks to focus on legislation protecting access to abortion, a move he announced moments after the U.S. Supreme Court released a decision overturning the landmark 1973 ruling in Roe vs. Wade.

On election night, the governor led his supporters in a chant of “we will not go back.”

Bailey, by contrast, is a conservative who opposes abortion rights and has been endorsed by some of the state’s most prominent anti-abortion groups.

The pair’s previous disagreements on pandemic response and executive authority will also likely play a role in the campaign, as will Bailey’s endorsement from Trump and nationwide rising inflation and gas prices.

Pritzker touted his pandemic response, his backing of marijuana legalization, and added funding for state police and violence prevention

programs.

He also gave a window into the line of attack he’d employ in the coming months against the candidate that his dollars helped to propagate in the primary.

“A few days ago, Donald Trump came to our state and he did what he does best—spew bile on the ground and hope that it takes root in our soil. And proudly standing by his side was the Republican nominee for governor of Illinois, Darren Bailey,” Pritzker said. “Let

me be clear, someone who seeks out and accepts the endorsement of a racist, misogynistic, homophobic, xenophobic, twice impeached former president does not deserve to come anywhere near the state’s highest office.”

Pritzker had a nominal primary challenger in Chicago area nurse Beverly Miles, but that race was called in Pritzker’s favor about a half hour after polls closed with Pritzker carrying more than 90 percent of the vote unofficially.

Treasurer and comptroller Neither’s party’s voters had a choice in the treasurer’s race or for that of state comptroller.

Incumbent Comptroller Susana Mendoza, of Chicago, had no primary challenger, while McHenry County Auditor Shannon Teresi ran unopposed on the GOP side.

Treasurer Michael Frerichs, of Champaign, ran unchallenged to retain the role as the state’s chief investment officer, while state Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, had no challenger.

On Tuesday, June 28, the DuPage County Board voted to take steps to allow the sale of cannabis in unincorporated areas of the County. The County Board voted in October 2019 to prohibit the sale of recreational cannabis in unincorporated areas. The Board’s vote last Tuesday directs the Development Committee and staff to create a zoning and licensure program which regulates, but permits, adult cannabis businesses in unincorporated DuPage County.

The permitting and licensing program will only impact businesses located in unincorporated areas in DuPage County.

The York football team closed out the month of June on an ultra-high note. The Dukes won the Fox Valley 7-on-7 tournament hosted by St. Charles North High School. York went a perfect 6-0 on the day to secure the title.

York opened pool play with a 24-6 win over Wheaton-Warrenville South and scored a 24-18 victory over Aurora Christian. The Dukes were then 28-18 winners over Crystal Lake South. York

Walz said York exceled despite playing a treacherous schedule. “We had a very solid year playing the second-hardest strength of schedule in the state,” he pointed out. “Most of our losses were to some of the best teams in the Midwest, including New Trier, which won the state championship, Loyola, Hinsdale Central twice, and the top two teams in Michigan:

Rockford and East Grand Rapids.”

Swanson was the team leader in goals scored and points, while Piszczor was one of the top goalies in the state in save percentage all season, Walz noted. Duhig, he added, also was dominant in the faceoff circle and with her draw percentage.”

Swanson is headed to Division I Queens University, while Duhig will play at Division I Central Michigan, and Piszczor and Kogan at Division I Xavier University. Anna Mapes will play at Division III Wooster College.

“We will be losing some key players to our success, including four future NCAA Division I lacrosse players,” Walz said. Walz also lauded Olivia Holubowicz, as one of the team’s top scorers, as well as Bree Borchardt and Angelina Cervantes, who “were both very steady and key players on attack,” he said.

Walz said next season “will be very interesting,” he noted. “We will need to put in the work. We will be a young team that I am sure will develop into a very good lacrosse team.”

Elmhurst Youth Baseball ELMHURST, IL., June 23rd, 2022 – Elmhurst Youth Baseball (EYB) and Elmhurst Cougars Baseball & Softball are excited to announce the merger of our organizations.

Since its founding in the late 1980s, EYB has built strong in-house and Little League baseball programs, along with its outstanding Extreme travel and Sunday League baseball programs. Elmhurst Cougars Baseball & Softball, established in 1992, is one of Chicagoland’s oldest and most accomplished travel sports organizations.

"Together, EYB and the Cougars aim to raise the competitive bar," said Adam Kanouse, president of the Elmhurst Cougars, and Bobby Smith, President of EYB. "We share common goals to field winning teams at all age levels and provide even more opportunities for our community’s kids to learn, grow and excel through high-level instruction and play."

Tryouts for the 2022-23 Cougars softball season will begin July 12. Tryouts for EYB travel baseball begin July 10.
