‘Cue for a Cause for EWAN seeks competitors for annual event

All throughout Elmhurst, people are perfecting their barbecue techniques in anticipation of the fifth annual ‘Cue for a Cause, benefitting the Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network. Registration is now open for all teams interested seeing how their food might stack up against other backyard chefs. Competitors will work to gain recognition for their ribs, chicken, and sauce. The team with the highest combined score among all three categories will attain Grand Champion fame. Elmhurst resident Brent Stewart took home the Grand Champion trophy in 2018. For Brent, the fourth time was the charm. “It was an amazing feeling to be crowned champion of the ‘Cue,” he said. “After being in every one of the ‘Cue for a Cause events with limited success, it truly was a surprise to come out on top.” Stewart will be back to defend his title this year but was still willing to share a couple of his secrets to others considering competing. “My BBQ secret would be to know who you are cooking for in the event if you want to be recognized,” he said. “You are not cooking for yourself but for the judges who most likely have different taste preferences.” The competition is open to all. The event is Sept. 1, the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. Complete details, rules, and registration can be found on the EWAN website, elmhurstwalkin. org. The spots are limited, so teams are encouraged to sign up early. The ‘Cue isn’t just for competitors. Four live bands will keep the

venue rocking. This year Barbeque Jim Lawshe will be firing up the grill to offer a full range of grilled items, from dogs to burgers to pork on a stick. He will be even be offering a veggie burger. Beer and wine are for sale as well,

and the root beer float stand is always a hit. Kids will love playing in the dedicated kids area and adults can seek out some great items in the raffle tent. While competitors can’t serve their ribs or chicken to the crowds, people will have the opportunity to

Father’s Day winners

taste the sauces and vote on their favorite. The event is open to the public from 12 noon to 8 p.m., and is located in the City lot at York and Vallette. Entry is free. The Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance

Network is a local not-for-profit dedicated to serving Elmhurst neighbors in need of financial help during a difficult time. Since its start in 1997, it has given over a million dollars in assistance and has provided countless residents peace of mind.
