Elmhurst University sets new fundraising record Reaches 90 percent of Elmhurst 150 Campaign goal

According to an announcement released last week, Elmhurst University has recently completed its best fundraising year in institutional history for a second consecutive year.

During fiscal year 2022 (July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022), the University raised more than $10.1 million, the most ever raised in one year by the institution and nearly $130,000 more than the previous fiscal year.

In a year highlighted by Elmhurst’s 150th anniversary, more than 2,350 individual gifts were given to support the University’s institutional priorities. The University also saw

EAM announces first solo exhibition of street artist Sentrock

Feature works by community-minded muralist seen in Chicago neighborhoods

Throughout the Elmhurst Art Museum’s 25th year of inspiring its community, the Museum hosts a year-long celebration with a focus on the three major hallmarks of its mission: architecture (Spring), education (Summer), and art (Fall), culminating in the Fall season with the first solo museum show of Pilsen-based street artist Sentrock, who seeks to uplift and empower youth through his murals and educational projects.

The exhibition will feature new work by the rising artist that reveals for the first time the origin story of his distinctive Bird City Saint character, which appears in prominent murals in Chicago and other cities. Elmhurst Art Museum presents Sentrock opens Friday, Sept. 9 and remains through Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023. Tickets are available at elmhurstartmuseum.org.

About the artist Joseph Perez, best known as “Sentrock,” is a self-taught street artist who creates large-scale, colorful public mural works. He views street art as a gesture of compassion for his community and a powerful form of expression that encapsulates his Mexican American background, upbringing, and history. With spray can in hand, he developed his work from graffiti writing to his now highly stylized and recognized street art featuring the Bird City Saint character that wears a bird mask. He describes this signature mask as a means of an individual’s personal expression, strength, and hope.

At its May meeting, the Elmhurst chapter of 100+ Women Who Care (WWC) awarded $15,000 to the Elmhurst-based nonprofit organization, Warm Coats for Cool Kids, operated entirely by Garry and Debra Vaccaro, who take no salary or compensation for their efforts.

The mission of Warm Coats is to provide new winter coats to children in need.

Garry and Debra Vaccaro, who have been Elmhurst residents for 35 years, founded Warm Coats in April 2021. With the help of many volunteers, they were able to distribute more than 950 coats last year. As the recipient of these funds, Debra told the WWC that Warm Coats for Cool Kids would be able to expand its mission and include more children in need.

Warm Coats works with social workers and local schools to identify children in need of a new winter coat.

Once this process is completed and children are registered, Warm Coats holds coat distributions, where each registered child is assigned a volunteer “shopper.” The shopper helps children choose a coat from multiple colors and styles and ensures a proper fit. This manner of distribution gives the child a more dignified manner of selecting a new coat and offers pride of ownership.

“I am grateful to be a member of 100+ Women Who Care, a group of women committed to improving lives in our community,” said Elmhurst resident Betty Laliberte. “Our collective gift to Warm Coats for Cool Kids will provide coats and comfort for children in need and allow Garry and Debra to accelerate their vision to impact families.”

EEHealth, Northshore grant almost $4 million to 14 NFPs First distribution from $200 million Community Investment Fund Edward-Elmhurst Health has awarded $3,994,000 to 14 organizations across Cook, DuPage and Will Counties through the first distribution from its Community Investment Fund.

In January 2022, EdwardElmhurst Health and NorthShore University HealthSystem each committed $100 million to their respective communities.

In February, NorthShore distributed $2.6 million to seven organizations in Cook and Lake Counties.

For this exhibition, Sentrock presents a new mural in the galleries as well as animations, cutout wood figures, paintings, and drawings that tell the narrative of the Bird City Saint character, and its origins in the artist’s biography, across numerous galleries. The exhibition will explore the importance of the Mexican American community and educational background to his ongoing practice.

Sentrock gives back to the Latinx community through various educational and mentor projects with local youth, food, and clothing drives in his neighborhood, and more.

His recent projects include collaborations such as a summer youth workshop with Apple, a custom shoe design for Converse, a collaboration with the Chicago Bulls, an activation of Chicago’s Water Tower for JBL Audio, a commission for Mountain Dew NBA All-star Weekend, plus brand ambassadorships with Chicago Fire, Footlocker, and more. His murals appear throughout several neighborhoods in Chicago, and in other cities such as Detroit, Miami, New York, Phoenix, and Los Angeles.

Elmhurst Art Museum is committed to expanding and strengthening its relationship with Chicago’s broader western suburban community and introducing them to the most exciting regional and national artists of our time. Dedicated programming will accompany the Sentrock exhibition, including opportunities for local teens to work with the artist to create a special display at the museum. This will be the culmination of lessons designed to encourage conversations about public art, the impact murals can make on communities, collaboration, and message building. The teens’ creative and curious voices will be amplified through an examination of street art projects facilitated by museum educators. A full schedule will be announced on elmhurstartmuseum.org.

The fire extinguisher had been completely discharged within the stairwell and the cabinet was damaged.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported three incidents of fleeing and eluding during which the driver of a vehicle fled the scene after being stopped for a traffic stop by police—including Allen White, 65, of Chicago, who was charged with fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, driving while license revoked and improper use of registration near I-290 and Lake at 10:01 a.m.

July 15 Brenda L. Dudley, 63, of Bellwood, was charged with criminal trespass at a store in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at 5:04 p.m. Police said Dudley was previously served with a no trespass and placed under arrest.

July 17 A 67-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 100 block of N. Pine at 8:19 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a verbal argument, the suspect struck the victim and scratched her.

July 14 A 40-year-old Franklin Park woman was charged with domestic battery at a hotel in the 500 block of W. Grand at 7:38 a.m. An officer responded to a domestic stand by in response to a verbal argument between the victim and the suspect. Almost a half-hour later, the officer returned to the hotel, where he found the victim had been battered.

DUI, DUI-drugs, transportation of open alcohol, possession of open alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor July 21 Heliodoro Gutierrez, 53, of Berwyn, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and transportation of open alcohol subsequent to a traffic stop near Highview and North at 2:47 a.m.

July 17 Emilio Sosa, 57, of Melrose Park, was charged with DUI, Obstructing Justice and Improper Lane Usage subsequent to a traffic stop near York and North at 2:38 a.m.

July 16 Edgar Martin Trujillo Villa, 43, of Chicago, was charged with no valid driver’s license,

July 9-July 18 A victim told police she has been receiving threatening text messages from an unknown person(s) since July 8. The investigation was forwarded to the detective division.

July 18 Manuel Hernandez, 28, of Mount Prospect, was issued a citation for obstructing identification subsequent to a hit and run on I-290 at 3:20 p.m. Police said a witness followed the suspect into the parking lot of a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83. A reporting officer made contact with Hernandez, whom police said provided false information.

Possession of cannabis in a vehicle

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported seven incidents of possession of cannabis by either the driver of a vehicle or a passenger: Antonio Tucker, 18, of Chicago, near North and York on July 15; Thomas Alvarado, 21, of Elmhurst, in the 1000 block of S. York at 9:03 p.m.; Devontae Hamp, 27, of Westchester, near Michigan and North at 3:54 a.m.; Jehova Bue, 23, of Cicero, near York and Roosevelt at 5:59 a.m. July 17; Mayra Balbuena-Benitez, 44, of Chicago, in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at 3:20 p.m. July 18; Karl Williams, 36, of Schiller Park, near Indiana and North at 3:25 a.m. July 20; and Tyreek Meyrell, 25, of Glendale Heights, near Church and Grand at 10:52 p.m. July 20.

Suspicious circumstances

July 18 A reporting officer responded to an area near Villa and Albert at 10:21 p.m. for a report of a road rage incident. Upon arrival, the complainant related an unknown person(s) threw rocks at him while he was riding his bike.

The reporting officer checked the area, but no rocks were located. It was later learned the complainant has made 11 similar unfounded

July 17 Theft was reported in the 100 block of W. Industrial at 2:25 p.m. A victim reported an unknown suspect accepted an online food order which the victim ordered using a corporate credit card. The victim contacted the delivery driver, who stated the food was delivered and signed for by a suspect, who gave the victim’s name. The victim does not have the suspect’s information.

July 16 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at 8:55 a.m. A complainant related the unknown suspect, described a black male entered the store, filled two reusable shopping bags with an unknown number of over-the-counter medications and batteries and left without paying. An investigation is pending.

July 15-July 16 Theft was reported at a business at a senior center in the 100 block of W. Diversey. A victim told police that while at work, an unknown person(s) removed her Adderall medication bottle containing 60 pills from her backpack while it was in the medication room at the center.

July 15 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at 11:15 p.m. Police said upon arrival, a complainant said an unknown suspect exited the store with multiple hand/ body soaps, and Prilosec OTC which she did not pay for. An investigation is pending.

July 8-July 15 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 500 block of W. Babcock. A victim related that an unknown suspect(s) broke into his Land Rover and stole a bag and other items sometime between the above dates.

July 14 Theft by deception was reported at a gas station in the 400 block of N. York at 4:49 p.m.

A victim related that he was approached by a suspect who asked him for gas money. The victim pumped a large amount of gas into the suspect’s car. The suspect then gave the victim four pieces of gold jewelry in exchange for money. The suspect left the area in a dark Jeep Cherokee with Virginia plates.

July 13-July 14 Theft by deception was reported in the 300 block of N. Highview. A victim reported receiving an email from a crypto currency website requesting the victim verify account information. The victim entered his password and later discovered an unknown suspect(s) had removed crypto currency from his account.

The victim had no information on the suspect.

July 13 Attempted identity theft was reported in the 600 block of S. Hillcrest at 8:33 p.m. A reporting officer met with the victim who reported an unknown suspect(s) had attempted to open a credit card account using his personal information.

July 5 Identity theft was reported in the 700 block

of N. Emory at 12:08 p.m. A victim related that an unknown suspect(s) made two unauthorized purchases from his checking account.

Theft of catalytic converters

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported three incidents of catalytic converters being removed and stolen from a vehicle at the following locations: in the 200 block of N. York at 10:30 a.m.; in the parking lot of Elmhurst-Edward Hospital sometime between July 17 and July 19, and at 7:07 a.m. July 19;

July 19 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Route 83 at 11:57 p.m., Jamaul Loggins, 39, of Henderson, Ill., was found to have a valid warrant out of the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

July 16 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Route 83 at 9:54 a.m., Michael J. Bolla, 44, of West Chicago, was found to have four warrants out of DuPage and Kane County. Bolla also was charged with obstructing identification, driving while license suspended, driving with suspended registration and no insurance.

Appellate Court affirms life sentence plus 45 years for brutal murder of Hinsdale woman DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Public health officials announce 32,268 new cases of COVID-19 over the past week The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported 32,268 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 52 deaths since July 15.

According to the CDC, 58 counties are now rated at High Community Level for COVID-19, an area that includes most of the counties in northern Illinois as well as counties around Peoria, Champaign, Metro East and Quincy. An additional 36 counties in Illinois are now rated at Medium Community Level.

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 3,528,282 cases, including 34,309 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois since the beginning of the pandemic.

As of July 21, 1,453 individuals in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 145 patients were in the ICU and 46 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators. The preliminary seven-day statewide case rate is 253 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 Illinoisans.

“The data tells us that COVID-19 is still with us and still spreading,” said IDPH Acting Director Amaal Tokars. “The most important thing you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones from the virus is to be up-to-date on vaccines and booster shots. An investigation by the Hinsdale Police Department and the Felony Investigative Assistance Team found that on May 4, 2017, Sanders gained entry to Urban’s house. Once inside the home, a physical altercation between Sanders and Urban ensued resulting in Sanders repeatedly striking Urban in the head and slashing her throat.

After murdering Urban, Sanders stole two rings from the home and fled the scene. On May 25, 2017, Sanders was taken into custody and arrested on an unrelated Will County traffic violation.

On Jan. 24, 2020, following a nine-day trial, a jury found Sanders guilty of first-degree murder, home invasion and residential burglary.

The jury also found that the murder was exceptionally brutal or heinous indicative of wanton cruelty.

On June 20, 2020, Judge Brian Telander sentenced Sanders to natural life in prison without the possibility of parole for Urban’s murder, 30 years for home invasion and 15 years for residential burglary. All three sentences will be served consecutively.

At his sentencing hearing, the state presented evidence of two incidents that occurred while Sanders was in custody awaiting trial. One incident, characterized by the court as “a vicious, unprovoked attack” was against a fellow inmate Steven Kelly in which Sanders was “the main person involved.”

The second incident related to Sanders’ attempt to destroy evidence against him. At sentencing, Telander characterized Urban’s murder as “savagely violent, savagely vicious, utterly wicked and evil.” Telander also found Sanders’ criminal history to be “horrendous,” stating “the public needs to be protected from you forever.”

The Appellate Court disagreed with Sanders’ assertions that the Court abused its discretion at sentencing. In its decision, the Appellate Court noted that “the viciousness of Urban’s murder was seen again in Kelly’s beating” and consequently, “the trial court reasonably found that defendant lacked rehabilitative potential.”

The Appellate Court concluded that “in this case, the record overwhelmingly supported the trial court’s exercise of its discretion in imposing the defendant’s sentence.”

“I thank the Appellate Court for their thorough analysis of this case and their finding that a sentence of natural life plus 45 consecutive years is not only appropriate, but warranted in this case,” Berlin said. “The brutal, merciless murder of Andrea Urban destroyed a loving family and shook the entire community to its core. The Appellate Court’s decision ensures that Mr. Sanders will spend the rest of his life behind bars, a sentence he has most certainly earned.”

Judge Hutchinson delivered the judgment of the court with Justice McLaren and Justice Hudson concurring.

Matthew Tumbarello, 21, appeared at his sentencing hearing this afternoon where Judge Margaret O’Connell handed down the sentence. On July 29, 2020, Tum-

barello appeared in bond court where bond was set at $20,000 with 10 percent to apply in accordance with a previously issued arrest warrant.

Tumbarello posted the necessary $2,000, or 10 percent, and was released the same day. On March 22, Tumbarello entered a plea of guilty to two counts of criminal sexual assault—unable to consent, a Class 1 felony.

In early July 2020, one of Tumbarello’s alleged victims, who was in a dating relationship with the defendant, reported to the Wheaton Police Department that she was the victim of a sexual assault. An investigation into the matter found that not only had Tumbarello sexu-

ally assaulted the woman when she was unable to give knowing consent, he had also sexually assaulted another woman on a different occasion when she was unable to give knowing consent as well.

“An individual’s inability to refuse having sex is not consent,” Berlin said. “The fact that Mr. Tumbarello took advantage of two women who were unable to consent is reprehensible. I thank the two victims in this case for their courage to step forward and willingness to assist us in holding Matthew Tumbarello accountable for his despicable actions.”

Tumbarello will be required to serve 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Anniversary thoughts, Part 1

“Tell them you love them over and over again. Tell them too much, and never too little, for the time we have is short, but the love we have is endless.” - Dane Thomas This week would have (should have) been my 35th wedding anniversary.

I guess it is my 35th wedding anniversary. I’m still married, albeit without a husband. A widow (deep heavy sigh). He died shortly after our 33rd anniversary. But still, I remember, and I celebrate.

No, I just remember.

We’d planned to do something “big” on this anniversary. We never felt like we had the chance before. Fifteen, 20, even 25 - we let them all pass us by.

We were always too young, or too poor, or too busy raising kids to spend the time or money for anything for just the two of us. It seemed too extravagant.

We took lots of family vacations, but they were planned around our four kids.

We always spent time together, but it typically involved practices, games or performances (of the childhood variety). We spent many weekends away from home in hotels - for tournaments and supervising kids in the pool.

They were good years - building a family, raising children. We were happy to put special times for just the two of us on hold because we had all of our future for us as a couple. We married young. We were young. There’d be plenty of time.

Or so we thought.

We thought we’d do something big this year. He’d always promised to take me to Europe.

But it could have been so many things: a long weekend in Las Vegas, a trip to a secluded cabin in the mountains, the beach. Anything - something. It didn’t matter what.

It would be a rare splurge on just the two of us.

Instead, now, it’s just me. And I have some advice.

Don’t wait. Don’t wait. Don’t wait.

Please.

Don’t. Wait.

There are always logical reasons to wait. To put off the things you really want to do with your spouse because don’t have enough money

or time or whatever you think you need to do all the things you want to do. Please take note of my circumstance.

You never know when your own later may no longer exist. Take the trip. Go on the vacation. Fish for salmon in Alaska. Cruise the Mediterranean. Hula in Hawaii.

Surf in South Africa. Volunteer in to build a school or a church.

Go on safari. Visit a nude beach.

Buy that hobby farm. Plan an extravagant night out on the town.

Buy her the diamond. Get him those golf clubs. Do it now.

My husband and I passed by anniversary number 30 and thought we had to wait until number 35 to celebrate something grand because 35 was the next big number.

Take it from me: numbers don’t matter. Life matters. Now matters.

Celebrate now. Celebrate this year, next year and the year after.

Heck, celebrate more often than that. Celebrate always. Every day.

Unabashedly.

Because, at then end of it all, not too many of us regret all the good and joyous things we did in life. We don’t regret the happy memories or songs we sang together.

What we might regret, and often regret, are the spectacular things we didn’t do. Even the mundane things we didn’t get a chance to do. Those that we thought we’d get to – some day – but didn’t because time ran out My best advice? You never know when time will run out.

So do it now. Experience to the fullest. Enjoy. Love. Create a memory worth keeping. Let your husband (or wife) take you to Europe.

Make it spectacular.

When the statement was fully unpacked, it was clear that CAT was moving its global headquarters to suburban Chicago.

“Locating our headquarters closer to a global transportation hub, such as Chicago, means we can meet with global customers, dealers, and employees more easily and frequently,” said Jim Umpleby, CAT’s new CEO. He added: “We value our deep roots in Central Illinois and Peoria will continue to be our hometown.”

Then last month, Mr. Umpleby announced that CAT was leaving Deerfield for Irving, Texas.

“We believe it’s in the interests of the company to make this move, which supports Caterpillar’s strategy for profitable growth as we help our customers build a better, more sustainable world,” he said opaquely.

Pressed for a fuller explanation, a CAT spokeswoman said the Texas location “will give us the ability to attract new talent and provide additional career opportunities for our current employees to aid in retention.”

How would this help CAT retain its workers? Is CAT moving to Texas so that its workers will find “additional career opportunities” with other firms in that state?

I believe that CAT has a responsibility, as a good corporate citizen, to explain honestly and clearly why it is making its decisions. That does not seem too much to ask of a firm that referred to itself as a “great American company” in a U.S. Senate hearing.

It is deeply disappointing that CAT has failed to honor commitments and offers empty rhetoric instead. This behavior is unworthy of a “great American company” and is unfair to the people of Illinois.

The Pew Research Center periodically publishes a study that measures Americans’ declining distrust in various institutions. Not surprisingly, the least trusted group is our elected officials. The next least trusted group is America’s business executives.

Unfortunately, the current leadership of CAT has given us additional reasons not to trust the words of corporate America.

Grace V. Rinner, 91 Grace V. Rinner, of Elmhurst, died Thursday, July 21, 2022, at the age of 91. She was born August 1, 1930 in Coshocton, Ohio, to the late Alphis G. and Hattie L. (Bickel) Vansickel.

Grace was raised a farm girl, married her true love Dick Rinner in 1954 and settled in Elmhurst in 1960.

As a young Mom of three children, Grace was very involved as Sunday School teacher and room mother and she helped organize neighborhood events like Easter Egg hunts and the annual 4th of July block party.

In the 1970’s, she returned to work to set up and run Lincoln School’s “Learning Center”. She went on to work as a bookkeeper for Suburban Bank of Elmhurst and Babson Surge.

After retiring, Grace was very active in Toastmasters and the Abbey Choraliers. She also worked many years at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art where she loved her role as “Grandma Grace” doing the school

tours.

Grace is survived by her children, Rebecca (Jim) Zografos and Richard Rinner Jr.; her cherished granddaughter, Katherine Grace Zografos; her youngest sister, Ada “John” (Lawrence) Leaman, her dearest niece, Donna Ashcraft, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Grace is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard D. Rinner Sr.; her daughter, Ann Marie Johnson; her sisters, Doris (Raymond) Ashcraft, Alice Willis, Mary (Jack) Farmer, Susie (Dwight) Shoults, and Joan (Edward) Hagans; and her brothers, Martin Vansickel, Stanley Vansickel and Jack (Thelma) Vansickel.

A Memorial Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 1 at Elmhurst Community Funeral Home – THE AHLGRIM CHAPEL, 567 S. Spring Road, Elmhurst. Gov. JB Pritzker has tested positive for COVID-19 and is isolating at home, his office announced July 18, three days after he spoke at a gathering of Democrats in Tampa, Florida.

Pritzker’s press office said he is experiencing mild symptoms and has received the anti-viral medication Paxlovid, a drug that received Emergency Use Authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in December for individuals at high risk to the effects of COVID-19.

The drug, according to clinical trials, reduced by 89 percent the risk of hospitalization and death from COVID-19. It is manufactured by Pfizer.

Pritzker is also vaccinated against the virus and has received two booster shots, according to his office.

The governor tested positive during “routine” testing after he arrived home from Florida, having had several close contacts with other COVID-19-positive individuals at the gathering of Democrats.

Pritzker’s office said he will work from home and follow the current U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, which call for at least five days of isolation after the positive COVID-19 test, regardless of vaccination status.

“He urges all Illinoisans to continue following CDC guidance, utilize anti-viral treatments, and get all available boosters,” his office said in a statement.

The governor’s first positive test came more than two years into the pandemic which first led him to issue a disaster declaration in March 2020.

It also came as the entire state was located in a “high transmission” COVID-19 area, and 50 counties were considered to have high COVID-19 community levels in Illinois. Community levels factor in hospital admissions and available hospital beds, as well as transmission rates.

Another 44 Illinois counties were at medium community levels as of July 15, while eight counties were considered at low levels, according to CDC. Despite the rising transmission rates, mask mandates in Illinois and

Chicagoland Chamber survey reports on small business resilience The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce announced the findings of its 2022 Chicago Small Business Outlook Survey at the Chicago Urban League on Sunday, July 17.

The 2022 survey, sponsored by Amazon, provides a snapshot of the attitudes and sentiments of the city’s small business community around how businesses are adapting to a post-pandemic workforce, what an increase towards e-commerce means for traditional business models, and how small businesses can play a role in equitable and inclusive economic empowerment.

“We see in our report that Chicago’s small business community showed incredible resilience in the face of COVID-19, adapting to the new normal to continue to grow their organizations,” said Jack Lavin, president and CEO of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce. “All these findings paint a clear picture that Chicago’s small business community has, and continues to demonstrate tremendous strength, adaptability, and sense of purpose.”

The survey was conducted by Loyola University Chicago’s Quinlan School of Business.

“The digital marketplace is continuing to create opportunities and drive the growth of small businesses ensuring that they not only survive, but thrive,” said Sarah Glavin, head of community engagement, Amazon, Chicago.

Key findings from this year’s survey include: • 67% of small businesses said that they have hired new employees in the last 12-months; • 38% of small businesses say that they plan to further increase their headcount in the coming year; • More than half of Chicago’s small businesses now rate their organizational performance as better than it was at the start of the pandemic, thanks to an increased focus on digital efficiencies; and, • Nearly three-quarters of organizations polled said that not only is promoting gender and racial equity practiced in their place of business, but that their company’s recruiting efforts actively support a more diverse environment through their hiring practices.

“Even after the pandemic, there are more small businesses than there were five years ago,” said Robert “Bo” Steiner, district director at the U.S. SBA. “The small business community is growing, and there is an incredible ecosystem of partners like the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and the Chicago Urban League who are committed to supporting this incredible momentum.

The Elmhurst Lions Club and the Lions of Illinois Foundation will have its mobile hearing and vision screening unit available to conduct free hearing and retinal screenings on Saturday, Aug. 6 at York Community High School.

According to information provided by the Lions Club, hearing loss is one of the most common chronic disabilities in the U.S. There are nearly 720,000 people impaired hearing in Illinois. Of those, 106,000 are deaf and 26,000 of them were deaf before the age of 19. The Lions Clubs of Illinois spon-

sor free hearing screenings every year for persons 18 or older and for minors ages 10-17 years with a written parental consent.

The quality of life for people with retinal disorders such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy is dramatically impacted. Since early detection of such disorders is critical, persons 55 and older are encouraged to take advantage of free retinal screening.

Elmhurst resident receives Mother Teresa Award at Montini Montini Catholic High School congratulates this year’s recipients of the Mother Teresa Award for Campus Ministry from the class of 2022.

Recent graduates Julia Moran and James Stiso were informed of their honor on Friday, May 20 during the Lasallian high school’s Founder’s Day Ceremony.

“Each year, these esteemed awards recognize Bronco students who have devoted themselves to God by working in the Lasallian tradition to serve others and to build a heritage of faith in our community,” said Montini Catholic president Jim Segredo. “Ju-

lia and James have a strong commitment to our Catholic faith and Lasallian mission. Each has exemplified Christ-centered leadership qualities throughout their time here at Montini and they have truly inspired us all.”

Both were Peer Ministers and members of Montini Catholic’s Lasallian Youth Club. Both also served as leaders of Montini’s Kairos Retreat this year.

Julia, an Elmhurst resident, and James were also among the 19 seniors from the Class of 2022 to receive the St. John Baptist De La Salle Award on May 20.

Local student musician attends prestigious summer music academy Matthew Markwald, a talented young musician from Elmhurst, spent the past two weeks in Door County, Wisc., studying at Birch Creek Music Performance Center.

Markwald, a student at York Community High School, was among 55 other musicians from throughout the country to attend the Symphony Session at this prestigious academy whose mission is to provide intensive, performance-based instruction to promising young musicians by immersing them in a professional, mentoring environment.

Birch Creek celebrates its 47th

concert season in 2022 and continues to support a student-to-faculty ratio of approximately 2:1. During their two-week residency this summer, students performed seven concerts alongside their teachers in front of paying concertgoers.

Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Egg Harbor, Wisc., is a residential summer music academy for advanced young musicians. Four sessions focus on Percussion and Steel Band, Symphony, and Big Band Jazz. The 2022 concert and session dates are posted at BirchCreek.org/ Tickets.

Mazzochi to host informational webinar on ticks, Lyme disease

State Representative Deanne Mazzochi continues her informational webinar series with a panel discussion on ticks and Lyme disease next Thursday via Zoom.

“You can be exposed to ticks and the diseases they carry anywhere; not just the woods and in farm fields, but in backyards and local parks,” Rep. Mazzochi said. “People need to be vigilant and know what to look for and be aware of.”

Cases of Lyme have been reported in all 48 contiguous states and Alaska, with the highest concentration in the Northeast and the Midwest. According to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 476,000 Americans contract Lyme disease each year, making it very prevalent. However, unless a classic bulls-eye rash is detected, many cases of Lyme disease go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed and mistreated un-

til it is too late to prevent more severe damage.

Rep. Mazzochi is hosting an online information session to educate people about tick and Lyme disease prevention, identification, and treatment. The panel will consist of environmental specialist, Harvey Mull, and Dr. Rashmi Chugh, who specializes in Lyme disease treatment and prevention. Both panelists are with the DuPage County Health Department.

The webinar will take place on Thursday, July 28 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Jesse White extending driver’s license and ID card expiration dates until Dec. 1 Encourages the public to conduct business online at ilsos.gov, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that expiration dates for driver’s licenses, ID cards and learner’s permits are being extended until Dec. 1.

The previous extension was set to end on July 31.

As a result, expired driver’s licenses, ID cards and learner’s permits will remain valid until Dec. 1, so customers do not need to rush into driver services facilities.

This extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits.

White’s office expanded online renewals for expired driver’s licenses and ID cards and continues to mail letters to eligible customers. The letter provides driver’s license and ID card holders with a unique PIN needed to renew online instead of visiting a facility and waiting in line. Customers may call 217-785-1424 to confirm their eligibility for online renewal or to obtain their PIN.

They may also visit https://apps.ilsos.gov/ renewaldlid/eligible.jsp to look up their eligibility status. Customers who must visit a facility include first-time driver’s license or ID card applicants, firsttime REAL ID applicants and drivers ages 75 and older who are required by state law to visit a facility when renewing their license.

White continues to encourage people to conduct other business online at ilsos.gov. In addition to driver’s license and ID card renewals for those who qualify, online services include obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card, ordering a driver record and purchasing license plate stickers.

White noted his office is also extending the expiration dates of restricted driving permits (RDPs) to Dec. 1 for those that expired on or after Dec. 1 through Dec. 1.

As a reminder, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the federal REAL ID deadline to May 3, 2023.

York girls basketball team excels during summer Dukes net 12-3 record against challenging schedule

The York girls basketball team had reason to be excited heading into the summer season. Coach Brandon Collings’ squad returned all but one player from last year’s team, and that experience helped the Dukes make things happen in June.

York went 12-3 overall in summer action against a schedule loaded with strong Class 4A opponents.

“The summer went really well,” Collings said. “We knew this would be a two-year process. We were really young last year and now we return probably 95 percent of our scoring, almost everybody. We have high expectations, for sure.”

The Dukes played the likes of Rockton Hononegah (2022 regional

champion), Wheaton North (2022 sectional finalist), Glenbrook South (2022 regional champion) and Chicago Whitney Young (2022 supersectional qualifier).

“We went 12-3 and were missing girls here and there,” Collings noted. “We ended up at Montini for a one-day shootout and played Whitney Young, they will be tough. We lost to them by four. We beat Glenbrook South by 13 and they bring a lot back. We had two wins against them this summer. The Whitney Young game was close. It was a good test, especially at the end of the summer.”

York was powered this summer by varsity veterans such as Lizzie Baldridge, Mariann Blass, Stella Kohl. “Our returning starters all

played well,” Collings said. “Lizzie ran the show for us and had a really good summer. She has size and strength and keeps getting better and better. Mariann shot the ball well and continues to improve.

Stella is going to be a big one for us this year. We played with basically five guards last year. She was a 5-10 wing who we put in the post. She’s able to get on the wing and penetrate. She will help us a lot.”

Baldridge and Blass are now seniors, while Kohl is a junior. Junior Hannah Meyers also was on the list of those who had great summers.

“Hannah had a great summer and has continued to improve,” Collings noted. “She shot the ball well and her defense has gotten better. She’s tough with her back to the basket

and with a pullup jumper. Her jump shot is getting better.”

Collings also put Angelina Downer in that summer key contributor category, but with a big asterisk. “The wild card will be Angelina,” he said. “She has the size we need to take us to the next level.

She was a 6-1 sophomore last year.

She’s a post player who can still get better and she continues to improve.

She averaged 14-16 points for us over the summer. If she continues to improve and play like she did, we are going to be a tough team to beat.”

Sophomore-to-be Anna Filosa also improved during the summer schedule, Collings said. “Anna is shooting the ball better and attacking the basket. She’s gaining a lot of

confidence. She will probably be the first one off the bench for us.”

Collings said the enthusiasm and determination levels are high for this Dukes group. “We barely lost to Glenbrook South in the regional title game last year,” he noted.

“We played a tough schedule last year and we ended the year strong playing good basketball. We put in offensive and defensive systems and with almost everybody back that helped speed things along. We knew this would be a two-year process.

We knew this would be a big year for us to take the next steps. I don’t know if I have been more excited for the start of a season. This is a great group of girls that works hard.

I can’t wait to see how they do this season.”

Some reasons for the Trojans’ stellar June play? “One of the biggest things is they have all bought in and are all on the same page,” Groenewold said. “They spend a lot of time together and they seem to enjoy each other. That helps them push each other and hold each other accountable. They pick up the level of intensity when we scrimmage, which is very nice to see.”

The Trojans also worked on new schemes that were installed. “We have implemented some new stuff into the system and the kids really picked up on it pretty quickly,” Groenewold said. “We’re pushing the tempo of the ball and we scored quite a few points off that, and we’re isolating our posts a little more. It’s been good to see the things we taught the kids being put into practice. Hopefully, that transfers over the next four months when they play other sports, but here we had a really good summer.”

Leading the way for the Trojans was the talented duo of senior veterans Maddie Drye and Grace Roland. “They have played for four years now as starters,” Groenewold said. “Those two have really picked up their leadership roles. They are holding people accountable and scoring quite a few points.

“Maddie and Grace have played with groups that are highly competitive going back to the Hannah Schuringa and Sureya Alex years.

They have learned a lot about what it takes and they are bringing it with them in their own way. It’s really good to see them pass that on to each other.”

Senior Mili Martens also was praised for her work. “Milli is a se-

nior and our point guard and played pretty steady for us,” Groenewold said. “Our other seniors are finding their minutes and getting better, which is great to see.” In addition to Drye, Roland and Martens, other senior contributors included Julia Voss and Kayley Jirsa.

12U Little League team wins Sectional, advances to Final Four Elmhurst 12U Little League beat Bradley Bourbonnais 4-0 in the Illinois Sectional Championship game on Monday, July 18 night at East Side Little League, in Chicago.

The victory allowed Elmhurst 12U Little League to advance to the state tournament in Moline.

The game was scoreless in the bottom of the 3rd, when Nate Patterson drove in Carter Roach on a sacrifice fly. Elmhurst added to their slim lead in the 4th, when Joey Solberg scored on a wild pitch.

In the 5th, Elmhurst added another run when Luke Osbolt doubled and John Siok and Ryan Putz both singled. The Elmhurst defense was stellar as the boys did not commit a single error. Carter Roach pitched 4 innings of 1 hit ball with 8 strikeouts. Devin Hopkins came in to close the game in both 5th and 6th innings. The boys from Elmhurst played their first game at state on Saturday, July 23rd beating Oglesby 3-0.

On Sunday, July 24, they beat the defending state champions Hinsdale 6-4. Elmhurst 12U Little League will play for the state championship on Tuesday, July 26. If they advance, they’ll have an opportunity to showcase their skills on ESPN at the regional games, in Whitestown, Ind. State police broaden use of ‘clear and present danger’ reports Administrative rule change seeks to close gaps identified with alleged Highland Park shooter

The Illinois State Police announced last week they will start using a broader definition of what constitutes a “clear and present danger” when reviewing a person’s Firearm Owners Identification card.

That’s a factor ISP considers when deciding whether to grant someone a FOID card or to revoke or suspend a card that has already been issued.

The change is meant to address gaps in the process that were identified in the wake of the July 4 mass shooting in Highland Park. The alleged shooter in that case had been the subject of a clear and present danger investigation, but under standards used at that time, ISP determined there was insufficient evidence to support such a determination.

“These changes will immediately allow ISP to see a fuller picture of an applicant’s history and keep the people of Illinois safe from those who should not be in possession of firearms,” Gov. JB Pritzker said in a statement.

Under current law, known as the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act, ISP can deny a FOID card application or suspend or revoke an existing card for any person deemed to be a clear and present danger of harming themselves or someone else.

Under that statute, a physician, clinical psychologist or other qualified examiner can classify someone as a clear and present danger if he or she “communicates a serious threat of physical violence against a reasonably identifiable victim or poses a clear and imminent risk of serious physical injury to himself, herself, or another person.”

A person can also be classified as a clear and present danger if they demonstrate “threatening physical

That law requires physicians, clinical psychologists, law enforcement officers and school administrators to promptly report any such behavior to ISP. In 2013, however, ISP filed administrative rules that provide a stricter, more limiting definition.

Those rules defined a clear and present danger as someone who poses “an actual, impending, or imminent threat of substantial bodily harm to themselves or another person that is articulable and significant or who will be likely to act in a manner dangerous to public safety or contrary to the public interest if they were granted access to a weapon.”

ISP said the new rules announced will revert to the original, statutory definition, allowing them to consider a broader range of information when determining whether someone poses a clear and present danger.

The 2013 rule also prohibited ISP from maintaining report records of people who are not determined to be a clear and present danger. The new rules would require ISP to maintain those records.

ISP adopted the new definitions through what are known as “emergency rules.” That’s allowed under state law when an agency determines it needs to take swift action to protect public interest, safety or welfare.

But those rules are still subject to review by the General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, or JCAR, whose next scheduled meeting is Aug. 17.

ISP said it also plans to submit the changes to JCAR in the form of permanent rules through the regular rulemaking process as well.

ISP took the rulemaking action in response to the July 4 shooting in Highland Park after authorities announced the local police department had several interactions with the alleged Highland Park gunman that predated his application for a FOID card.

ISP did not judge any of those interactions as disqualifying for firearm ownership under the previous administrative rules.

In September 2019, according to ISP, the Highland Park Police Department filed a clear and present danger report regarding the man who is now the suspect in the July 4 mass shooting, Robert Crimo III. The report indicated Crimo had made threats to his family.

When police went to Crimo’s house, both he and his mother de-

nied there had been any threat of violence and Crimo told police he did not feel like hurting himself or others.

The reviewing officer concluded there was insufficient evidence, under the standards in place, to support a clear and present danger determination.

At the time of that incident, Crimo had not applied for a FOID card. Roughly three months later, however, he did apply for a FOID card and, because he was only 19 at the time, his father sponsored his application.

When his application was reviewed in January 2020, according to ISP, there was insufficient information to deny his application on the basis that he posed a clear and present danger.

Analysis: Poll shows Pritzker’s popularity remains steady as Biden’s slides in Illinois

A new poll from the firm Morning Consult showed Gov. JB Pritzker’s approval rating at 51 percent among Illinois voters, or seven points “above water” in polling lingo.

It’s the latest quarterly poll from the firm, and data included 14,258 registered voters polled from April 1 through June 30.

While it’s a truism of polling that any poll is just a “snapshot in time,” Pritzker’s numbers have been remarkably consistent in the Morning

Consult measurements since January 2021. His approval has ranged from 50 to 51 percent while disapproval ranged from 43 to 44 percent.

President Joe Biden’s approval rating in Illinois as measured by the same firm, however, is an example of how quickly public sentiment can change.

Morning Consult distributed the polling results under the headline “Democratic Governors Facing Re-Election Are Resisting Biden’s Drag Effect.” The firm measured Biden’s approval at 47 percent in

Illinois while disapproval measured at 50 percent.

It was a major drop from one year prior for Biden, who logged a healthy 58-38 approval-disapproval rating in Illinois for the quarter ending in June 2021.

The discrepancies between the approval ratings of Biden and Democratic governors help explain the level of intrigue in national news outlets regarding Biden potentially being replaced atop the Democratic ticket in the 2024 election cycle.

Many news outlets, including Capitol News Illinois, have asked him about his plans should Democrats seek a new presidential candidate next time around.

He hasn’t directly denied an interest in a presidential run, but he told Capitol News Illinois at the end of June that Illinois remains his focus.

“I’m not talking about running for president. I’m talking about running for governor,” Pritzker told said in an interview after the June 28 primary. “And it’s what I’m focused on. I really do believe that, you know—I love this state—and I love the job that I have. I believe there’s a lot more to get done. I mean, you wouldn’t look at me and

say that Illinois doesn’t have more to get done.”

The intrigue has also been largely stoked by the governor’s recent speaking engagements.

In June he spoke at a gathering of Democrats in New Hampshire, normally one of the country’s first states to hold a primary, and last weekend he spoke at Florida Democrats’ Leadership Blue gala.

The Florida speech took an unapologetic tone, championing progressive policies passed in his first term in Illinois while also focusing on abortion rights and gun control.

It also included a faux “apology” from the governor to Floridians for defeating ex-Gov. Bruce Rauner by nearly 16 points in 2018, a win Pritzker said caused Rauner to move to Florida in “humiliation,” according to prepared remarks reported by Politico.
