Last week, the Independent brought the news that an aggravated robbery took place on Friday, July 15 at about 8:30 p.m. at the Dress Barn store, located at 167 So. Rte. 83 in Elmhurst.

According to Police Chief Michael Ruth, the offender had entered the Dress Barn at 8:25 p.m. claiming to be looking for a dress for his wife. Other customers were in the store at that time, so he left the store, Anthony Harris but returned a short time later when the others had left.

The offender then announced a robbery and implied that he had a weapon. After they opened the cash registers, employees were gathered into a bathroom, at which time the offender took cash from the registers and fled the store on foot, heading north Working in conjunction with other jurisdictions, detectives from the Elmhurst Police Investigations Division developed information that subsequently identified the offender as: Anthony D. Harris, 40, of the 200 block of Blackberry Drive, Bolingbrook.

On Thursday, July 21, Elmhurst detectives took Harris into custody without incident near his residence.

Harris was charged with Aggravated Robbery and transported to the DuPage County Jail.

Troop 74 honors two who achieved Eagle rank Scouts were #40 and #41 under tutelage of the late Walter Schalk

On the evening of Monday, July 18, a “Court of Honor” formal ceremony was held to recognize two members of Boy Scout Troop 74, who attained the rank of Eagle.

The new Eagle Scouts are Luke Robert Videckis, 18, son of Phil and Eva Videckis, and Trevor James Corsello, also 18, son of Rich and Nancy Corsello. Out of all scouting whose programs start at Tiger Cub level (5 years old), only 6 percent follow through to this level of achievement.

Another interesting community component to the story is that Luke and Trevor are the last two Scouts under the legendary tutelage of Wal-

ter Schalk to achieve the rank of Eagle. A long-time resident of Elmhurst, Schalk passed away a few months back, following more than 40 years of service as Scout Master to Troop 74. During that time, he was responsible for shepherding more than 30 Boy Scouts through the rigorous steps and merits to earn the Eagle rank. Troop 74 survives today with new leadership, inspired by Schalk and his legacy.

At the ceremony, Luke and Trevor were able to present an award to acknowledge the person who was most influential to them as a Scout. Not surprising, they both gave the award to their recently-passed Scout Master Walter Schalk. His son Wayne Schalk and Walt’s granddaughter came to the ceremony to accept the award on Walter’s behalf. Luke and Trevor were Walter’s 40th and 41st Eagle Scouts respectively.

Fundraiser for kids born with congenital Chamber plans annual heart defects New Teachers Luncheon LJ’s Healing Hearts named for local family’s grandchild

On Saturday, August 13 from 7-10 p.m., the third annual Have A Heart event for LJ’s Healing Hearts will be held at Fitz’s Spare Keys, 119 No. York Road. LJ’s Healing Hearts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which helps families of children born with a congenital heart defect.

It is named for Lucy James (LJ) Shannon who was born with a congenital heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). LJ is the granddaughter of Elmhurst resident Joseph Morgan

and daughter of Elisabeth Morgan Shannon, who grew up in Elmhurst attending Jefferson Elementary, Bryan Middle School and York High School.

LJ’s Healing Hearts was spawned from a fundraiser held by friends of the Morgans and the Shannons to help offset the financial strain that always goes along with a critically ill child.

The charity is currently seeking other families of a child with a congenital heart disease, if financial support is needed.

Sometimes people get so busy caring for their little one, there is little time to seek help.

Come out to Fitz’s and enjoy some good times and good fun. There will be a silent auction, a raffle and wine pull and much more.

Obituary ROBERT T. DEHMER, 91 Robert T. Dehmer, 91, of Las Vegas and formerly of Elmhurst, died June 3, 2016 in Las Vegas. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. Beloved husband of the late Lillian B.; loving father of Donna (George) Drazich; cherished grandfather of James Thomas Green and Lisa Ashley (fiancé, Ryan Hamilton) Green. Mr. Dehmer was preceded in death by his parents, Harry A. Dehmer and Marguerite (Hensler) Dehmer and

his brother Harry Lee Dehmer. He was employed with Chicago Rivet and Machine Company for over 50 years. He was an avid sports enthusiast and participated in his bowling league for over 50 years as well.

Coming up on Thursday, August 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. is the 26th Annual New Teachers Luncheon hosted by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI).

The format, often imitated by other Chambers, includes a bus ride around the community for the teachers, then back to the Diplomat West Banquet

Hall, 681 W. North Avenue, where attendees will each be matched with a Chamber member, who will join them for lunch to get acquainted.

Then during the program portion of the event, the Chamber person will stand and introduce the individual teacher to the entire room. Teachers also receive a goodie bag with many items from local merchants and businesses, who are Chamber members.

Tickets for the luncheon, which will include a mini-Expo, are $30 for Chamber members plus $20 to sponsor a teacher.

A limited number of display tables will be available for $40. Deadline to register is Friday, July 29 at 5 p.m.

Youth Commission hosts sexual assault awareness workshop

The Elmhurst Commission on Youth is sponsoring the showing of a Sexual Assault Awareness film, along with offering a follow-up prevention program, on Tuesday, August 2 at the Elmhurst Public Library beginning at 7 p.m.

One in four college women is the victim of sexual assault. More than 290 Elmhurst girls are headed off to

college in the fall. This workshop specifically discusses college campus sexual assault awareness. Both young women and men are encouraged to attend.

July 15 A victim in the 400 block of Willow told police that an unknown suspect threw a rock through the front picture window of his residence, causing damage to the residence. The victim reports seeing a dark car flee the area south on Willow.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor July 19 Burglary to a vehicle was reported at a roofing company in the 200 block of N. West Ave. at around 6:31 a.m. Police said an officer responded to the business for a reported car burglary. A complainant told police he noticed several tools had gone missing from a work van at the above location.

July 18 • Robert Caffero, 55, of Melrose Park, was arrested near Route 83 and North Avenue at around 9:16 p.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Caffero was found to be DUI and to be wanted out of DuPage County. He was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, expired registration, improper lane usage and transported to DuPage County Jail on the warrant.

• Erica Janovsky, 22, of Oak Brook, was arrested near Route 83 and Riverside at around 1:06 a.m. and charged with DUI drugs/alcohol combination, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, improper lane usage and failure to signal following a traffic stop.

July 15 Paul Villagomez, 57, of Stone Park, was arrested near North and Oaklawn at around 1:33 a.m. and charged with DUI, driving while license suspended and improper lane usage following a traffic stop.

July 14 • Samantha Jackson, 31, of Elmhurst, was arrested near St. Charles and Spring at around 1:32 a.m. and charged with DUI and improper lane usage following a traffic stop.

• Scott Jantz, 37, of Elmhurst, was arrested in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 10:55 p.m. and charged with DUI and driving on the wrong side of the roadway following a traffic stop.

• Joseph Kwak, 27, of Berwyn, was arrested near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 1:43 a.m. and charged with DUI, disobeying a traffic control device and no insurance following a traffic stop.

Possession of cannabis/drug paraphernalia/controlled substance/tobacco July 20 • Taven Liddell, 25, of Berwyn, was arrested near Butterfield and Chatham at around 12:59 a.m. and charged with possession of cannabis and having one taillight following a traffic stop.

• Juan Solano, 21, of Glendale Heights, was arrested in the 300 block of S. West at around 10:21 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Solano was found to be in possession of heroin and DUI-drugs.

He was charged with aggravated DUI-drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of drugs, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, aggravated driving while license revoked and failure to signal when required.

July 19 Michael Hiera, 36, of Wood Park, was issued a citation by police near York and Grand at around 1:03 p.m. for possession of cannabis following a traffic stop.

July 17 Mark Lube, 37, of Lombard, was arrested near Grand and Church at around 1:36 a.m.

Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Lube was found to be in possession of heroin and hypodermic needles. He was charged with felony unlawful possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor unlawful possession of hypodermic needles and aggravated driving while license revoked.

July 16 • Darrell Jefferson, 36, of Chicago, was arrested near Lake and I-290 at around 1:05 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Jefferson, a passenger in the vehicle, was observed rolling a cannabis joint and found to be in possession of cannabis. He was charged with possession of cannabis.

• Subsequent to a check on well-being call, police said an unknown suspect was located and was in possession of cannabis.

She was taken into custody and charged with possession of cannabis and a curfew violation, and released to a family member.

July 14 Fabian Colon, 21, of Chicago, was arrested near North and Emroy at around 12:01 a.m. and charged with possession of cannabis and speeding following a traffic stop.

Suspicious circumstances July 17 A victim in the 200 block of S. Fairview told police that an unknown suspect(s) broke into her home through the back door and took a zoom lens for her camera. She also stated that someone took her cell phone, put an encryption on it and returned it. An officer checked

the residence and found the back door knob and dead bolt wrapped in duct tape to prevent another burglary.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/ forgery/deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery July 20 • Craig S. Johnson, 48, of Bellwood, was arrested in the 500 block of Mitchell at around 3:41 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a report of stolen lawn tools from the back of a landscaping truck, Johnson was apprehended and positively identified. According to police, he admitted to burglarizing the victim’s truck for tools, and was charged with burglary.

• Retail theft was reported at a food store in the 900 block of S. York at around 3:01 a.m. A complainant told police that while at the cash register, she observed a white female with a large black purse exit the store at a fast pace causing an alarm to activate.

The female entered the passenger side of a black SUV and left the parking lot. The female is described as being between 30 and 35 years old, around 5’6”, with long strawberry blonde hair, wearing a peach shirt, tan shorts and white sandals. A second suspect was described as a black male with long hair wearing an unknown color hat and a light colored shirt. The vehicle was described as being a black newer model SUV or minivan.

• A complainant in the 400 block of E. Court told police that they found an unauthorized account on her credit report.

July 19-July 20 A victim in the 200 block of Forest told police that sometime between 6:15 p.m.

July 19 and 12 noon July 20, an unknown suspect(s) entered her unlocked vehicle that was parked in her driveway. The victim noticed her backpack was missing.

July 19 A victim in the 100 block of E. Van Buren St. told police that while she was checking her account balance she noticed an unauthorized charge to Nicor Gas. The victim suspects her ex-boyfriend had made the transaction.

July 9-July 19 Andrew James, 28, of Chicago, was arrested at a car dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand Ave. at around 1:21 p.m. Police said that while investigating an identity theft at the dealership, an officer was advised of a suspect who had allegedly purchased a vehicle using someone else’s Social Security number. James, the suspect, came back to the dealership after being called about the problem. James was charged with identity theft.

July 17-July 18 An employee at a pizza restaurant in the 100 block of Addison told police that an unknown suspect removed two patio umbrellas from the outdoor seating area between the above dates.

July 17 • Janette Perez, 31, of Chicago, was arrested in the 400 block of N. York at around 3:22 a.m. Police said that subsequent to an investigation of a suspicious vehicle, Perez provided an officer with false identification information. Perez was then found to be

wanted by the DuPage County Sheriff on three warrants and the Aurora Police Department on one warrant, according to police. She was charged with obstructing identification, and then transported to DuPage County Jail on the warrants.

• Thomas Santella, 35, of Bensenville, was arrested in the 600 block of N. York at around 9:40 a.m. Police said that subsequent to observing suspicious activity, officers learned Santella had a revoked Illinois driver’s license.

The suspect was observed driving from the scene, and was then stopped by officers, who were able to determine Santella had committed a retail theft at a restaurant, police said. He was charged with retail theft and driving while license revoked.

July 16 Susan M. Osterman, 51, of Villa Park, was arrested at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 2:14 p.m. Police said Osterman placed unpaid clothing items on underneath the clothes she had worn into the store. She was charged with felony retail theft.

July 15 A victim at a store in the 100 block of S. Route 83 told police that an unknown suspect described as a black male wearing a dark gray hooded sweatshirt, a black-redgray baseball cap, army green pants and dark colored gym shoes implied he had a gun and asked them to open the cash registers. Further investigation is pending.

July 6-July 13 Complainant at a restaurant in the 200 block of S. Route 83 told police he noticed a pressure washer missing from the storage shed.

July 12 • A complainant at a business in the 100 block of Addison told police that the office computers were hit with a Cerver Ransomware Virus. An unknown suspect requested payment in bitcoins. The case is pending investigation.

• A victim in the 100 block of N. Willow told police she is in the process of rehabbing the property.

On the above date, a worker noticed that an unknown suspect had removed an attached metal ladder from the basement escape window.

Jan. 1-March 1 A victim in the 100 block of Rex told police that an unknown suspect used her identity to open an account with a company named “RCN.” The suspect used the account for three months for service to an address in Chicago.

Violating no-contact order

July 20 Daniel Odom, 18, of Elmhurst, was arrested at around 2:18 p.m. Police said the victim had an order of protection against Odom, who admitted to meeting with the victim. Odom was charged with a violation of a stalking no contact order.

Warrant service

July 16 Police said an unnamed suspect who was driving a vehicle involved in a traffic accident fled on foot following the accident. The suspect was later found to have been wanted out of Bensenville after fleeing a traffic stop. Further investigation is pending.

More crime news Two arrests made for prostitution

On July 15, Gong Jing, 29, of Chicago, was arrested in the 400 block of N. York at around 6:44 p.m. Subsequent to a prostitution investigation in the above area, police said Jing agreed to a sexual act after receiving U.S. currency. Gong also did not possess a massage license nor did any of the other employees. She was charged with prostitution and massaging without licensing.

On July 19, Breana Dunlap, 23, of Chicago, was arrested in the 900 block of S. Riverside Drive at around 9:26 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a Backpage.com advertisement, an officer conducted a series of phone conversations with the suspect who agreed to perform sexual acts in exchange for cash. Dunlap was charged with prostitution.

Shoplifting suspect turns in more stolen merchandise from home

On July 20, an officer responded to the report of a shoplifter being held at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 11:53 a.m. The juvenile suspect admitted to stealing four Fitbit Altas and one Fitbit Blaze, according to police. Once in the Loss Prevention Office, the suspect reportedly turned in other merchandise he had previously stolen. There was also merchandise at his home, which was brought into the police department.

The suspect was taken into custody, transported to the police department and released to his mother, charges pending.

Victim claims he was jumped, robbed, punched in mouth

On July 3, a complainant came to the police department and said that, while walking in the 600 block of N. York Road at around 4:40 p.m., he was jumped by suspects. They took his backpack, containing personal items and an unspecified amount of cash. The second suspect punched the complainant in the mouth.

Workshop to learn more about advantages coming Sept. 29

Van Voorst Park has been selected as a pesticide-free park test site, brought about after discussions between Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition, the Midwest Pesticide Action Center (MPAC) and Elmhurst Park District Parks Division staff. The 2.9-acre park was selected due to its amenities and adjacent location to Jefferson Elementary School.

During the trial run, Parks Division staff will manage weed and pest problems with cultural and mechanical controls including mowing at higher heights (3 inches), aerating, over-seeding and physical weed removal. For more information, visit epd.org/parks/van-voorst-park.

“We have been pursuing a pesticide-free park location since No-

vember of last year after partnering with MPAC on a pesticide-free lawn campaign,” said Lisa Gerhold-Dirks, chair of Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition. “The “Keep ON the Grass” pledge campaign is aimed at educating the community on more natural lawn care practices across Elmhurst.

“The selection of Jefferson Elementary School for this test is ideal. The park is used by children from the school, in park district activities and in other organized sports.

Knowing that they’ll be playing on a pesticide-free surface should bring peace-of-mind to parents and caregivers who worry about the health hazards linked to lawn pesticides and herbicides.”

Lawn pesticides and herbicides

have been linked to a host of health hazards from asthma and ADHD to cancer and reproductive problems. Additionally, stormwater runoff can carry synthetic pesticides and fertilizers into our vital water ecosystems threatening our drinking water and aquatic wildlife.

Weeds are often a symptom of a larger problem associated with poor soil health or the use of improper maintenance practices. In instances where weeds are sparse, hand picking with a sturdy weeding tool is the best solution. Pokemon Go craze gets people out of the house

It’s all the rage and a cuttingedge craze – sweeping not only the nation, but the entire world. If you don’t have an inkling of understanding about what the verve is all about, chances are you’re aware of the buzz about Pokémon Go. And, if you’re like me, you wish you had the foresight to invest in the Nintendo Company a couple of months ago.

Pokémon Go is a new game played on mobile devices. On July 12, less than a week after it was first released, the app became the most active mobile game in the United States ever with 21 million users.

This thing is bigger than Candy Crush Saga.

Mobile apps are a dime a dozen (or often free, as is the case with Pokémon Go). Except this game is different from the others in one major way. It is location-based. You can’t play while sitting in your living room. The game requires that you go out. Into the real world. To find and catch imaginary Pokémon

(animal-like cartoon creatures) and hatch their eggs.

Makes perfect sense.

Hatching eggs requires a couple of things: a virtual incubator and walking. If kids (and kids who have already technically grown up) want to hatch an egg, they first place it in an incubator located on their phone.

Then they get moving. In the real world, in real time. Eggs take anywhere from two to 10 kilometers to hatch. For those of you not living on the metric side of things, one kilometer is a little more than half a mile. The app keeps track of the distance you’ve traveled and hatches the egg accordingly.

And don’t even think about cheating the system. Distance counting stops when a player exceeds a certain speed, so driving in a car doesn’t count toward egg hatching.

You’ve got to hoof it.

Players travel between places like PokeStops and PokeGyms (located at various places around town) to capture and battle – all while they are outside, exercising without even realizing it. Here’s the Poké magic: they just think they are having fun.

There’s hasn’t been anything this ingenious since kick-the-can.

At least that’s this mom’s perspective. Pre-Pokémon, I was the one battling – to get my kids off the couch and away from the screen.

Now they’ve still got the screen, but at least they are off the couch.

Playing outside. With friends. Poke me.

Nothing this popular can skate (or walk) by without some amount of criticism. People walking or biking while staring at their phone screens is like distracted driving

without the car. Walking the streets after dark may put kids at risk of not being seen by motorists. And, players hunting Pokémon at places like museums, cemeteries, memorial sites and fire stations isn’t always embraced by the non-players visiting or working at those sites.

Still, I’m a proponent.

My kid hasn’t played any indoor video games in the last week. If you are the mom of a 14-year-old boy, you understand the immensity and nearly miraculous significance of that statement.

I’ve heard adults (myself included) lament nostalgically over the good old days, when summer and childhood meant getting on your bike and exploring the woods or going to a nearby park and whiling away the hours until it was time to go home for lunch, or maybe even supper if you’d eaten a big enough breakfast or packed yourself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

My kid is doing that. His bike is broken, so he’s been riding mine –

a no speed, over-sized, fender-laden mom bike if you’ve ever seen one.

He doesn’t care about his lack of fancy wheels because he is having fun. He leaves in the morning and makes a quick pit stop for lunch.

His face has developed a warm summer glow. He’s meeting up with friends and finding new ones. The game’s even taught him about kilometer conversion.

So, for now I can overlook the fact that his summer reading isn’t yet complete. We’ll get to that.

Summer should be a time of playing outside with your friends. This new game may not be perfect, but it isn’t a perfect world. I’ll take what I can get. And for this summer, at least, it’s all about the go. Pokémon Go. In addition to here at home, over this past year we have traveled and looked, and on this mountain trip, we looked at places too. Cabins and Victorians and one that literally had a view to die for - we could not even make it up the treacherous mountain

road.

Nothing felt right. We’re not a realtor’s dream client. “What are you looking for?” “Oh, it could be anything, it just has to feel right.”

Realtors hate Zillow.com, but I’ve been addicted this past year. We got home July 4 and a for-sale-by-owner condo popped up on Zillow. July 5 we did a drive by and the owner was outside. We made an appointment to tour two days later.

It was the one.

Ease. A condo gives that. We can be gypsy travelers and have a home base. The place has a good view, quiet and peaceful, high ceiling and

a fireplace. It’s not a “normal” condo surrounded by other condos where you either look at your neighbor’s building or a parking lot. We have trees, a green yard, and a natural pond. Private. And someone else mows.

No one has a view into our windows. Not that I roam around naked, but I could. The fireplace is not standard condo - it is floor to ceiling stone.

We did a couple visits and pulled the trigger. We’re going condo.

It’s not tiny at 1750 square feet, but we’re being very selective what gets moved. The releasing of stuff is in full force. It feels good. The idea of a

condo had appeal and we had looked before, but didn’t find. When we took a breath and said let it be easy, this one appeared.

That’s our dream lifestyle motto, let it be easy. Things have been falling in to place seamlessly, with the sale of this one and the purchase of that one. Every morning I write in my journal, let it be easy. So far, so good.

Proposed regulations include: Small antenna structures, including antenna panels, whip antennas, or dish-shaped antennas shall not have a surface area of more than seven square feet and no single dimension exceeding seven feet.

Omnidirectional or whip antennas may not exceed more than seven feet, not including any pole extension.

If a small cell antenna structure is less than nine feet above grade, the company shall be required to pay the City a fee for the installation of landscaping.

A small antenna structure shall not extend more than 50 feet above ground level.

The small antenna structure and related equipment shall be a color that blends with the surroundings of the pole on which it is mounted and use non-reflective materials which blend with the materials and color of the surrounding area and structures.

On July 19, the District 205 Board of Education confirmed Mary Baum as the next Assistant Superintendent for Learning and Teaching, succeeding Dr. Michelle Fitzgerald. Baum has served as the principal of Mill Street Elementary School in Naperville District 203 for the past four years. She will begin her duties in Elmhurst on Wednesday, August 3. Baum served as a teacher, assistant Mary Baum principal and principal in Palatine District 15 for 15 years and has both elementary and middle school experience. She will complete her Leadership in Curriculum and Instruction doctorate from Aurora University this year.

She also holds a Master’s in Teaching from National Louis University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Rush University. “Mary has a proven track record of cultivating collaboration, closing gaps, and communicating effectively,” noted Elmhurst Superintendent Dr. David Moyer. “Her passion is contagious, and her commitment to instructional excellence unsurpassed.

We welcome her aboard with great enthusiasm.”

Baum’s district-level leadership experience includes: director for AVID, District co-facilitator for the EC-5 Principal Professional Learning Community, Dual Language Committee member, Committee for Gifted Program Evaluation member, and mentor to aspiring principals through a partnership between District 203 and North Central College. Ms. Baum has implemented professional learning communities in her building, supervised a dual language program, and has extensive experience utilizing and supervising instructional coaches. “I am honored to be selected to lead the Department of Learning and Teaching in Elmhurst,” she said. “This is an exciting time to be in the District with the implementation of a new English Language Arts curriculum and the new instructional coaches.

Mary Baum to begin duties Aug. 3

More cell phone capacity is needed in Elmhurst to meet increasing consumer demand, but more poles about 100’ high may not be needed.

Devices could be mounted no more than nine feet above grade on poles, not more than 50 feet high, according to proposed City regulations.

Such devices would require a special use permit so that “they may be compatible with the aesthetic character of the surroundings,” proposed City guidelines state. The City said that small cell antenna structures and related facilities have presented numerous issues not previously considered by the City.

Scott Levin, (5th Ward), chairman of the Development, Planning and Zoning Committee, said he had heard conflicting reports about the aesthetic appeal of the small antenna structures, not any problems with the operation of the devices themselves.

AT&T representatives asked at a July 11th meeting of the DPZ for the ability to install the devices to deal with what Ryan Wollenberg, a company official, said at times of high usage (spike times when at&t could not handle all the calls), the situation could be an “absolute mess.”

“We need to beef up the network,” he said, indicating more antenna structures could solve the problem.

Other firms have approached the City about being able to install small antenna structures, but Holmes did give any names.

Holmes also noted that a bill in the state legislature would allow cell phone poles in public rights-of- way.

Alderman Mark Mulliner (7th Ward), a DPZ member, asked if the state legislature bill could override small antenna regulations set by the City, which has home rule authority. Holmes said it could.

Hallbergs celebrate 50 years of marriage

Jim and Carol Hallberg, long-time devoted members of the Elmhurst community, have recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Their wedding date was July 23, 1966. Their children, Jen and Rob along with their families, treated Jim and Carol to The Atlantis in the Bahamas in June.

Jim and Carol met while attending Quincy College in Quincy Ill.; their eyes met while they worked at the school cafeteria together, according to their daughter.

“My dad was two years older than my mom so he waited for her back in Galesburg, while she finished col-

lege,” Jen Hallberg Peterson told the Independent.

When the Hallbergs were first married they lived in Lombard for a few years; then in the summer of 1970, they moved to Elmhurst. That is when their long-time love and commitment to the community began.

In addition to raising their family

in Elmhurst, they were also fortunate to work in Elmhurst as well. Carol opened up the kindergarten at Immaculate Conception Grade School, then continued to teach within District 205. She recently retired from the District as a principal, but cannot keep herself out of the schools, as she still substitutes at the elementary level within District 205.

Jim worked for Wolf & Company, an accounting firm that was actually based in Elmhurst for many years until the business later moved to Oak Brook. Jim has along been involved in Elmhurst Lions Club and Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry, just to name a few.

As a couple, the Hallbergs have been extremely active in the com-

munity with ECAF, United Community Concerns, Immaculate Conception parish and Mary Queen of Heaven parish.

Jim and Carol have three granddaughters, Morgan, Olivia, and Avery. They spend most of their free time with their family when they are not volunteering for the many endeavors they continue to support.

State’s Attorney’s office launches military option diversion program DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin recently announced that his office had launched a new initiative aimed at helping youthful offenders charged with minor crimes who have a desire to serve in the military. The initiative will allow participants the opportunity to keep a conviction from being permanently entered on their record, which may preclude them from military service.

“I am very excited about facilitating this military option that will divert certain cases from the regular Court call and help qualified applicants with a desire to serve our country from having a criminal record,” Berlin said.

Once a month recruiters from the Navy, Marines and Army will set up a kiosk on the fourth floor of the courthouse. From there, the recruiters will be available to meet with potential participants and conduct

a pre-screening to verify their ability to join the service. In instances where the only impediment to enlistment is a minor criminal offense, the State’s Attorney’s Office will review the applicant’s case and determine if the case can be disposed of in an appropriate manner that will allow for enlistment. In such cases, enlistment into service will be verified. The program is available to first-time, non-violent offenders.

“The initiative is a win, win,” Berlin said. “First, it will provide participants the opportunity to avoid a criminal prosecution and begin what promises to be a more productive chapter in their lives by serving their country. In addition, offering participants a chance to avoid getting tangled up in the criminal justice system will not only reduce crime, it will allow my Assistants more time to concentrate their efforts on going after more violent criminals.”

History Museum hosts architecture tour for a second year Back by popular demand, the Elmhurst History Museum will be hosting another Elmhurst Architecture Walking Tour on Saturday, August 20 beginning at 3 p.m. The tour is limited to just 25 participants, so register early. EHM’s Summer Spectacular was a chopping, dicing blast The Elmhurst History Museum’s Isn’t That Amazing! Summer Spectacular drew a crowd of nearly 200 people to the museum grounds on Sunday, July 17 to celebrate the innovative inventions made by Chicagoan Ron Popeil, sold by his companies Ronco and Popeil. Popeil used to pitch his gadgets on television back in the 1970s.

The afternoon featured product demonstrations by volunteers, tours of the exhibit, Mr. Microphone Karaoke and other family activities. The main attraction was the Ronco Chef Challenge, which had local chefs from Café Amano, OMG Brunch & Boutique, and One Fifty One Kitchen and Bar vying for the Golden Veg-O-Matic trophy.

The winner of a very close contest was Chef Ben Sheagren of One Fifty One Kitchen and Bar, a new farm-to-table restaurant that will be opening in Elmhurst later this year. Ben’s dish was a beet –infused donut with a goat cheese cream topping and maple syrup. The dishes were judged by a panel including: Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley; Pamela Popeil, daughter of founder Samuel Popeil; Chuck Cozette, editor of West Suburban Living Magazine; and John Quigley, president and CEO of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce.

Elmhurst Tang Soo Do attends World Championships Team places 6th overall at competition

The Elmhurst Tang Soo Do has just returned from the world cham-

pionship competition of the World Tang Soo Do Association held recently in Greensboro, No. Carolina.

More than 1,600 competitors vied

for medals at the WTSDA’s 16th Championship event, held every two years. Forty different countries from around the globe gathered for the tournament.

The championship began on Friday, July 15 with the creativity division, which included 11 teams vying for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies. In the creativity division, the teams are judged on technical ability as well as artistic value.

After that, the Black Belt divisions got underway. Championship Cup Winners are graded in three categories: weapons, forms, and freefighting.

On July 16, the Opening Ceremonies and Master’s Promotion took place, following by the Creativity Winner Demonstration. The rest of the tournament included competition among the Tiny Tigers, Little Dragons and Special Needs, as well

as all Gup Divisions of senior, youth and adult.

Elmhurst Tang Soo Do had 42 members participating in the competition and brought home several medals. The team placed 6th overall.

Cool Cities Coalition plans field trip to organic farm Bob’s Fresh and Local Farm operated by Elmhurst resident

On Saturday, Sept. 10 from 10 - 11:30 a.m., the Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition is planning a “field trip” – literally to a field! Farm fields, that is.

The public is invited to join the Coalition to Elmhurst resident Bob Vierow’s farm, home to Bob’s Fresh and Local CSA. Bob uses crop rotation to control weed and pest pressures, purchases organic seed and grows all his produce using organic methods, never using chemical fertilizers, weed killers, or pesticides on any food he grows.

Take a hayride out to the fields, stop to see the farm animals, and visit the greenhouse. Bring a picnic lunch and eat on the property after the tour. Families are invited. Wisconsin before earning a business degree at Elmhurst College. He went on to become an architect until the economic downturn put his firm out of business in 2009.

“When I was in college I heard about the Community Sponsored Agriculture (CSA) model that was starting out east,” he said. “The idea is that people in the community purchase a share of the farm and pay upfront for the farmer to provide them with vegetables grown throughout the season. It reverses the usual business model for the farmer to get the payment in advance and reduces some risk while allowing people to support small family farms in their area.”

Encouraged by this model and training classes he attended for CSA farmers, in 2010 Bob launched Bob’s Fresh and Local and recruited 26 members in his first year. Six years later, he maxes out at 150 members each year.

Bob and his team employ organic practices on the 75-acre farm they lease in Dundee, about 26 miles from Elmhurst.

“We will grow 12 acres of veggies this season, with

a crop rotation that enables us to return nitrogen and other nutrients to the soil, eliminate weeds, prevent soil diseases, and use no chemical fertilizers or insecticides,” he explained Bob plans to grow about 60 types of vegetables this year, with double that in varieties.

“We have 19 types of tomatoes,” he said.

Through a recent partnership, Bob will offer eggs, milk and meat to his shareholders this year. His partner will raise animals on the same Dundee farm and offer Bob’s vegetables to his members.

“The idea is to offer our shareholders the full menu, within reason and what grows here,” he said.

Longer-term plans envision the addition of fruit and grains.

About a third of Bob’s shareholders live in Elmhurst and pick up their weekly farm delivery boxes from a walk-in cooler at Bob’s house on Spring Road. Extra vegetables, eggs and milk are offered, then promoted by Bob’s wife Lori on Elmhurst social media sites.

“She puts a notice on a site like eParent that we have fresh eggs and they are gone in 45 minutes,” he said.

The local aspect is an important reason Bob started his CSA. “Most of the food we eat now comes from 1500 miles away,” he said. “Our country used to have local food systems and we are trying to build that up again. And part of that is paying a livable wage to our workers – we pay triple the farm minimum wage. Our shareholders are welcome to visit and schedule a tour anytime. They can see a cow being milked and develop that personal connection to their farmer and their food.”

Senators’ Advisory Council discusses stopgap budget The Legislative Advisory Council created by State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) and State Rep. Peter Breen (R-Lombard) presented updates on Illinois’ stopgap budget at a meeting Monday, July 18 at the Elmhurst Public Library.

Council members evaluated recent budget action in Springfield.

More than 30 people attended the meeting.

“This is not the budget we hoped for, but it serves as a bridge to ongoing negotiations, and addresses our immediate priorities,” Sen. Nybo said. “It funds K-12 schools for a full year, but does not bail out Chicago at the expense of the suburbs. It funds human services programs and transportation projects for which we get federal support.”

Nybo’s interns Meredith Cantey (University of Indiana), Amanda Nero (University of Missouri), Tom Pancione (Hinsdale Central senior) and Jenny Marten (St. Ambrose College, Iowa) and Rep. Breen’s intern Breanna Miller (University of Illinois) each prepared a summary of one of the bills

that comprised the stopgap budget agreement.

Nybo and Breen also gave their perspectives on the issue and answered questions about the stopgap budget.

“Our work is not done,” he said.

“We need a balanced budget supported by critical reforms to make our economy more competitive, our government more responsible, and our property taxes less onerous.”

“I’m grateful for the local residents who serve on our legislative advisory committee,” said Breen.

“They provide us a sounding board for new ideas, and they perform valuable research and analysis of bills and proposals to address the problems facing our state.”

Elmhurst College baseball team earns academic honor Bluejays name male and female athletes of the year

The Elmhurst College baseball team is the recipient of the American Baseball Coaches Association Team Academic Excellence Award.

Elmhurst was one of 32 NCAA Division III teams to earn the inaugural award from ABCA. In order to qualify for the award, teams were required to maintain a minimum 3.0 grade-point average for the 2015-

2016 academic year.

Elmhurst was one of two schools from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin to earn the award. The Bluejays finished the season with 21 wins.

On a larger scale, more than 175 Elmhurst College student-athletes earned academic all-conference honors from CCIW in 2015-2016.

Six student-athletes were honored with the Jack Swartz Academic AllConference Award. Each member school selects one male and one female athlete from each season for the Swartz honor. A 3.50 GPA is required for the honor.

Swartz award-winners for Elmhurst this past school year included Andy Warsen (football), Shannon Burns (volleyball), Kenny Payonk (men’s basketball), Claire Monroe

(women’s basketball), Greg Struck (baseball) and Brianna Thompson (softball).

Male Athlete of the Year Wrestlers Jimmy Nehls and Blake Santi were selected as Elmhurst College’s co-male athletes of the year for the 2015-2016 season.

Both wrestlers finished the season as CCIW champions and NCAA All-Americans in helping the Bluejays win a CCIW title and earn a top10 national finish.

Nehls, a senior, was the national runner-up at 141 pounds at the NCAA Division III championships.

He finished 31-5 overall and won CCIW and NCAA regional titles.

He finished 4-1 at nationals and also was named CCIW’s most outstanding wrestler.

Santi finished his senior season

with a 26-3 record at 149 pounds. He captured titles at the UW-Parkside Open, the CCIW championships and the NCAA Midwest Regional. Santi went 4-2 at the NCAA Division III championships and took home fifthplace and All-American honors. He closed out his career with a 16-1 technical fall win in the fifth-place match.

Female Athlete of the Year Women’s volleyball player Hannah Nimrick was named the Elmhurst College female athlete of the year.

Nimrick, a junior setter this past season, helped Elmhurst to a 24-win season and a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament for the fifth year in a row.

Nimrick was an All-American selection and also earned first-team

all-region and all-conference honors.

Nimrick finished the season with 1,120 assists (8.48 per set). She ranked third on the team in kills (301), kills per set (2.28) and second in digs with 365 and digs per set (2.77). Nimrick also had 67 blocks, ranking her third on the team. She registered nine triple doubles (double-digit stat totals in three categories), which ranked among the national leaders.

She is the first Elmhurst College setter to be named an All-American since the 2005 season.

Team Elmhurst Soccer Club hosts German soccer camp

IC Catholic Prep’s Hurt, York grad Less compete in summer golf tournaments

The Team Elmhurst Soccer Club recently hosted the TESC German Soccer Camp at Eldridge Park for more than 75 children ages 7-14.

Former Chicago Sting soccer player and NASL champion Ingo Peter and German youth soccer coach Gregor Podeschwa flew in from Germany to coach during the week of the camp.

At the camp, players worked on skills, played various small-sided games and improved their agility and coordination, TESC noted.

All campers received uniforms of Borussia Dortmund of the German Bundesliga, the professional soccer league in Germany.

The campers also enjoyed a special day during the camp when U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame member Willy Roy (former coach of the Chicago Sting) stopped by to talk soccer with the players and sign autographs.

Cougars 16U baseball The Elmhurst Cougars 16U team won the Game Day USA Cheesehead championship.

Elmhurst started the tournament with a 15-3 loss to Illinois Crush, but came back to record a 9-6 win over the Midlothian Braves. AJ Parnell was the winning pitcher and struck out five.

Connor Gwaltney belted a threerun homer for Elmhurst in the Midlothian win.

Elmhurst started bracket play with

another 9-6 win over Midlothian. The win advanced Elmhurst to the semifinals where it scored a 6-4 win over the Lakeside Legends.

Zach Pflum had two hits and three RBI in the win over Lakeside. He doubled in the third inning and singled in the fifth inning. Matt Crandall was the winning pitcher. He struck out three.

Elmhurst then faced the same Illinois Crush team in the finals, but this time the Cougars scored an 11-8 victory and took home the tournament title.

Hurt finishes ninth IC Catholic Prep girls golf standout Maddie Hurt, the 2015 Class A state champion, recently placed ninth at the MAJGT Players Challenge No.

4/Jr. PGA Qualifier at Highland Park Country Club.

Hurt finished with a two-day total of 157, which included a 75 on the final day.

Earlier, Hurt tied for eighth at the MAJGT-IJGA girls championship at Royal Hawk Country Club in St. Charles. Hurt finished with a threeround total of 241, which included a first-day score of 76.

Less competes in Amateur Championship York graduate Jordan Less recently competed in the 47th annual Illinois State Junior Amateur Championship at Makray Memorial Golf Club in Barrington.

Less finished tied for ninth with a three-round total of 225, which in-

cluded identical rounds of 75 in each of the three rounds.

Less also tied for fourth at the ISJA qualifier No. 3 held at Pine Meadow in Mundelein. Less finished with a 72.

IC Catholic Prep golf The IC Catholic Prep golf team will kick off the 2017 season with a meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 10.

Freshmen golfers are to report at noon to the cafeteria where a quick informational session will take place prior to the start of the school’s freshman orientation.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors should report to the cafeteria at 12:45 p.m. where an informational meeting will be followed by a practice.

Students should bring their clubs and shoes with them.

York baseball team reflects on strong summer run Dukes advanced to regional semifinals; Pitching a bright spot

One of the key pieces to the puzzle York baseball coach Dave Kalal was looking for this summer dealt with the team’s pitching staff.

Kalal saw light at the end of the tunnel during the latter part of the summer season when it came to pitching.

“We pitched well in the playoffs,” he said.

York advanced to the semifinals in the Fenwick regional. York defeated Glenbard East and Maine West and lost to Lyons Township in the semifinals. In the summer state tournament, there are no sectional or supersectional rounds. The winner of the regional advances to the state quarterfinals.

“The playoffs was a fun time and we played some good games,” said Kalal. “The kids played well and we hit the ball well and we hustled.”

York opened the playoffs with an 11-10 win over Glenbard East. “It was a back-and-forth game,” said Kalal. “It was a little sloppy. It was one of those games where whoever was going to be able to produce more runs was going to win the game.”

York used four pitchers in the contest. Burke Corcoran started the game. Scott Tucker was the winning pitcher. Joey Jaeger (4-for-4), Ian Steinorth (3 hits) and Nick Lee (3 hits) fueled the offense with three or more hits each.

“We had 16 hits in that game, which was great to see,” said Kalal.

“That’s something we’ve been doing all summer. We swung it pretty well and scored runs. It was nice to get that kind of production throughout the lineup.”

York also played well in its 7-5 victory against Maine West. Jake Hadawi pitched six innings and earned the win. Zach Pflum pitched the seventh inning and earned the save.

“Jake gave us six solid innings,” said Kalal. “It’s one of those things that I’ve preached about all summer.

People need to step up and prove they are varsity pitchers. That’s what Jake

did. He was tough. He threw strikes and he got outs. It’s a pretty simple formula.”

York had another strong offensive outing with eight hits. Pflum and Mike Pastuovic led the offensive attack with two hits and two RBI each.

“We hit well with runners in scoring position,” said Kalal. “We advanced runners with less than two outs. We also ran the bases well. We were aggressive.”

York saw its summer season con-

clude in a 6-4 loss to Lyons Township. “It was a back-and-forth game,” said Kalal. “We made three errors and had two balks in the same inning. We were a little sloppy defensively. But we were in a position to win that game.”

Kalal was impressed with how his team turned things up a notch during the most critical juncture of the season.

“It was good to see a sense of urgency during the playoffs whether

someone was pinch hitting or going in as a courtesy runner or a pinch runner,” he said. “There was that urgency. It was encouraging to see what our pitchers did and what they can do if they are challenged and pushed. Everything about the end of the season was encouraging. It was sad to see it end. We wanted to keep playing, but to see how close we were and how we got to the round of 32, was great. The kids got a taste of it. Winning games in the playoffs

is exciting. That hunger stays from year to year.”

And now Kalal has a very good idea of what he has heading into the 2017 spring season. “That’s the beauty of high-school summer baseball,” he said. “You play a ton of kids, but you get to see everybody in game situations. You see who is coachable and who hustles and listened. You see if guys can do things the right way. It’s always productive in the summer.”

York graduate Spencer excels at Lawrence University

York graduate Nolan Spencer was named to the all-Midwest Conference team in a vote of league coaches. Spencer was chosen for the North Division team.

Spencer started every game at shortstop minus five due to injury.

Spencer, a freshman this past season for Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., hit a team-best .413 with three doubles, two triples, 21 runs scored, 15 RBI and 16 stolen bases. Spencer is the first Lawrence freshman to lead the

team in hitting and bat .400 since 1990.

In conference play, Spencer hit .379 with one double, scored seven runs and had seven RBI. He posted a .962 fielding percentage in league play.

Curran at Dominican IC Catholic Prep alum Gabby Curran made an immediate impact for the Dominican University softball team.

In her freshman season, Curran hit .352 with 37 hits in 105 at-bats. She started all 32 games she played, adding 26 runs, nine doubles, one triple, three home runs and 25 RBI to her totals. She stole nine bases, had a .504 slugging percentage and a .937 fielding percentage.

Curran helped Dominican finish in a three-way tie for second place in the NACC, the program’s top finish ever.

Conenna Sisters in College IC Catholic Prep softball products Katelyn and Jessica Conenna have both continued their careers in college.

Katelyn Conenna finished her senior season this spring at Division I Indiana University where she was named to the academic All-Big Ten Conference Team.

Conenna played in 37 games (21 starts). She had 15 hits in 65 atbats. She scored 11 runs, had four doubles, two home runs and 13 RBI to go with a .395 on-base percentage.

Jessica Conenna is a member of the Northern Illinois University softball team that won the MAC West Division championship this spring.

The York summer tennis team remains perfect.

The Dukes recently recorded a 10-2 victory over Western Springs at Berens Park in Elmhurst. The win pushed York to an unblemished 4-0 in Trident League action.

Each dual match in the Trident League consists of a college format match (playing both singles and doubles) in the 17-and-under division and the 15-and-under division.

All levels are co-ed.

York won 10-2 in the singles division, but all doubles matches were shortened by rain. York clinched the dual with 10 wins in singles.

In the 17-and-under portion of the contest, Jared Doan scored an 8-5 win at No. 1 singles. Johnny Wheeler was an 8-4 winner at No. 2 singles. Jalen Macatangay was an 8-0 winner at No. 3 singles. Jack Fennell won his match at No. 4 singles by an 8-0 count, while Isabella Nicoli was an 8-7 (7-5) winner at No. 5 singles.

Allison Stramel was an 8-1 winner for York at No. 6 singles.

The 17-and-under doubles matches featuring Alex Hennessy and Johnny Wheeler (No. 1 doubles), Jacki Riek and Cristina Gamboa (No. 2 doubles), and Nicoli and Mei Giuffre (No. 3 doubles) were shortened by rain.

York wraps up Trident League play with the conference tournament this Friday at multiple sites.

Through the Western Springs match, Wheeler was leading the team in wins with five. Fennel, Nicoli, Maddi Plowman and Sonali Kumar each were 4-0. Melissa Cartis, Aleksina Jovic and Doan each had four wins.

Joanna Melendie, Nicoli and Max Damewood each had three wins, while Simon Kurkowski, Cate Duhig, Riek and Neidigh had won both of their summer matches.

Earlier, York scored a 13-7 victory over Butterfield Park District, an 11-7 win over Glenbard East and an 18-0 victory over Willowbrook — all on the road.

Plowman at Michigan York product Matt Plowman is a sophomore-to-be on the University of Michigan men’s cross-country and track-and-field teams. As a freshman, Plowman had several cross-country highlights. He finished 20th with a time of 15:46.2 in the 5,000-meter event at the EMU Classic while competing unattached.

Also competing unattached, he ran to a time of 26:55 at the 8,000-meter Spartan Invitational.

In his debut he took 42nd in the 5,000-meter event at the EMU Celebration as an unattached athlete.

He finished with a time of 16:12.2.

In track, he took 19th in the Collegiate Open Section of the 1,500-meter run at the Mount SAC Invitational, setting a new personal record of 3:50.22. Plowman took fourth in the 800 at the Long Beach Invitational with a person-

al-best of 1:53.49.

Plowman ran 3:53.15 in his collegiate debut in the 1,500-meter run at the Battle of the Blues. He made his outdoor debut at the Pac12 vs. Big Ten Invite, where he ran 1:54.95 in the 800 and also competed in the 1,600 relay.

Indoors, Plowman finished 11th in the mile at the SPIRE NCAA Division Invitational, setting a new personal record of 4:13.17. He ran 4:16.71 in the one-mile run at the Notre Dame Invitational. Plowman took third in the mile with a time of 4:16.17 and helped the 1,600 relay team finish first at the Doug Raymond Invitational.

Maloney at St. Mary’s IC Catholic Prep graduate Erin Maloney was a member of the St. Mary’s (Notre Dane, Ind.) women’s basketball team this past season.

Maloney played in 24 games (15 starts) and averaged 5.0 points and 3.4 rebounds. She played an average of 26.7 minutes per game and shot .708 from the free-throw line.

Maloney added 60 assists and had a team-high 46 steals.

Gov. Bruce Rauner used his veto pen to change or sink a number of union-backed proposals, two of which dealt with pay and benefits for home health care workers.

The governor vetoed a proposal that would have the state pay more for insurance for private workers who care for the elderly or disabled through the state’s Community Care Program.

The governor stated in his veto

message that the change would cost approximately $1 billion over the next four years.

Rauner said lawmakers didn’t include any way to pay for the new benefit.

He had the same complaint about another plan to raise salaries for home health care workers to $15 an hour.

Service Employees International Union, which drove the push for both plans, accused the governor of “continuing” the “war on women.”

This work shall be performed in accordance with the contract documents, copies of which are on file for review, and available at the City of Elmhurst, City Manager’s Office (2nd floor), 209 N. York Street, Elmhurst, Illinois 60126 for a nonrefundable cost of $50.00 per set of bidding documents. No bidding documents will be issued after 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 12, 2016. All proposals must be submitted on the forms provided and in compliance with the Instructions to Bidders. Submission of a bid shall be conclusive assurance and warranty that the bidder has examined the plans, the site of the work and the local conditions affecting the contract, and understands all of the requirements for performance of the work. Expert on black military history to lecture at Cantigny

The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park welcomes historian Anthony L. Powell on Wednesday, August 3. He will discuss the letters and ideas of Chaplain William S. Braddan, the only African-American officer from World War I, who left a first-person record of his service in France.

The free program begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Cantigny Park Visitors Center and all are invited. Parking also is complimentary for this event.

The story of William Braddan is rich and fascinating. He was born in a troop wagon of the 10th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. Army on the

Texas frontier, his father being a sergeant with the regiment. At age 16 he enlisted with the regiment himself and eventually participated in the Great War as a member of 370th Infantry, the only unit commanded entirely by black officers. After his military service, Braddan relocated to Chicago, becoming the pastor of Berean Baptist Church and Chaplain for the 8th Infantry Regiment of the Illinois National Guard.

Powell, of San Jose, Calif., has devoted more than 30 years to studying, teaching, collecting and writing about the American Buffalo Soldier, the nickname first applied to 19th-cen-

tury African-American enlisted men serving in the western United States.

Powell curates “The Buffalo Soldier,” a national travelling exhibit, and lectures extensively on Black Military History at universities, colleges and museums.

Illinois stolen valor law should have stiffer penalties, vet says

Experts on stolen valor say a measure signed last week by Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner is a small step toward holding individuals more accountable for pretending to be veterans.

The bill signed by Rauner makes it a petty offense in Illinois for someone to get tangible benefits from lying about serving in the military, a measure similar to an already existing federal law.

People found guilty of violating the Illinois law could be fined $200.

Violating the federal law carries the potential of a year behind bars.

Vietnam War veteran B.G. Burkett wrote a book about investigating socalled stolen valor. He said the Illinois law should be harsher. “I don’t want to say it’s worthless, but it’s not going to have much effect one way or the other.”

Burkett said he has found egregious examples over the decades of people, including police chiefs and politicians, pretending to be veterans. “I’d like to see them make it a felony, particularly

if they’re getting money.”

Retired Navy SEAL Larry Bailey, who works alongside Burkett to expose fraudsters, said there’s something more powerful than a fine. “Actually the greatest punishment can be the public recognition as a fraud,” Bailey said.

The artists of Studios630 to host exhibition

The works of the recently formed Studios630, a group of west suburban artists and creatives, will be on display at Park Art Center from Aug. 5-27, with an opening reception on Friday, Aug. 5 from 6-8 p.m. at Park Art Center, 9 East Park Blvd., in Villa Park.

“Studios630 is comprised of talented local artists from the community – 60 members strong and growing – featuring works in various mediums, including oil painting, mixed-media,

digital art, printmaking and photography,” said Sean McMenemy, cofounder of Studios630. “As a group, we’re really looking forward to having our “Members Show” hosted by Park Art Center. While many of our artists have shown in galleries, this is the first time most of us have shown together in one formal gallery setting.

I’m really looking forward to seeing all our different styles in one room.

Members originally met serendipitously over coffee at the Corner House in Lombard and decided to collaborate in order to display and market their work close to home while also bringing art to the community. The works of Studios630 members also form a rotating exhibit, featuring from 10 to 15 artists per exhibit, at The Corner Gallery, inside The Corner House coffee house in Downtown Lombard.

Governor Bruce Rauner signed three bipartisan bills into law on Friday, July 22 introduced and sponsored by State Rep. Patti Bellock (R-Hinsdale), the Deputy Minority Leader of the Illinois House of Representatives. The three new state laws include: HB 4352: Strengthens the education of children with dyslexia by establishing a statewide definition of dyslexia that the Illinois State Board of Education must incorporate in both general education and special education.

“Children with dyslexia must not be left behind in the classroom,” Rep. Bellock said. “By setting forth a clear definition of dyslexia, we’re giving educators and school administrators the understanding they Patti Bellock need to make necessary changes to curriculum that will improve the learning environment for students with a reading disability.”

HB 4367: Improves childhood literacy by requiring the Illinois State Board of Education to reestablish the reading instruction advisory group abolished on December 15, 2015 to complete the abolished group’s work before December 31, 2016.

“Literacy is the key to a quality education and the ability to succeed in the workforce,” Rep. Bellock added. “We must do everything we can, as parents and within schools, to lay this critical foundation for our children’s and grandchildren’s future by making sure every child learns to read.”

The Governor also signed a third Bellock bill into law on Friday pertaining to military families: HB 4327: Provides additional options other than state-run foster care and placement of children of active duty military personnel by allowing a parent or guardian serving in the military to execute a short-term guardianship that may extend beyond 365 days to a maximum of 30 days past a term of active duty.

“By allowing moms and dads serving in the military to execute a guardianship for their kids, we’re giving families the ability to ensure their kids are raised in a stable and loving home of their choice while they are serving our country,” Rep. Bellock said.

Governor signs Bellock dyslexia bills into law

State Senator Tom Cullerton’s measure to increase government transparency and the responsible use of taxpayer dollars was signed into law on Friday.

House Bill 4379 will to regulate all travel, meal and lodging expenses for officers and employees.

“Transparency is essential,” said Cullerton, a Democrat from Villa Park. “Illinois taxpayers should have access to the way state dollars are spent to guarantee funds are being spent responsibly and efficiently.”

The new law will create the Local Government Travel Expense Control Act, which will require non-homerule units of government, school districts and community college districts to regulate travel, meal and lodging expenses.

News of lavish expenses at the College of DuPage brought up cases illustrating the abuse of public funds by employees.

Certain documentation will be required to be submitted in writing to school boards or corporate entities before the expenses can be approved by a roll call vote at an open meeting. The will be public record that would be subject to FOIA. “The Better Government Association celebrates Governor Rauner signing HB4379 into law, this new law will provide oversight and regulation of local government expenses,” Judy Stevens, policy coordinator at the Better Government Association, said. “The law also empowers local government agencies to set regulations so that our money can be spent most efficiently. This new law is a step forward for our state and will bring accountability to the taxpayers of Illinois on how their money is being spent while saving the state money.”

The new law goes into effect January 1, 2017.

State takes first step in reining in standardized tests

Gov. Rauner: ‘there’s too much testing in the state of Illinois’

Illinois isn’t getting rid of the bevy of tests students take every year, but the state will finally track just how many tests students are taking.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a law Friday that will have school districts across the state send a report of every statewide or national standardized test students take.

The governor said Illinois needs to know just how many tests school children take each year.

“We have a vast number of standardized test being given to our children throughout the state of Illinois,” Rauner said. “There is a concern about too much testing in the state of Illinois.”

Rauner said he wants local

schools to continue to have local control over their test curriculum, but he does want to know how many tests are scheduled.

Mike Chamness, spokesman for the Illinois Association of School Administrators, said the Illinois’ School Management Alliance actually wanted the governor to veto the law.

Chamness said the Alliance fully supports transparency, but is dedicated to fighting all unfunded mandates for local schools.

“We’ve had over the past two

years 116 unfunded mandates put on schools,” Chamness said. “This is just another.”

The governor said it’s time for Illinois to look past standardized tests as the best or only way to measure whether students are learning what they need to know.

Rauner said there’s a misconception about testing.

“If students score at a high level on some test, that’s a good school,” the governor said. “If they score lower, that’s a bad school. That’s not true.”

Chamness said the Alliance agrees that standardized testing is not the be all and end all for measuring success.

“Tests have their place in terms of providing useful data and benchmarks for educators,” Chamness said. “But in terms of saying this is a good or a bad school, we think that’s a misuse of those tests.”

Rauner said Illinois will always need a way to measure how students are learning and how well teachers are teaching. He said he hopes to push for those reforms soon.

Taxpayers won’t foot bill for mansion repairs ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK

Illinois’ executive mansion is set to get its first big makeover since the 1970s, and the taxpayers aren’t being asked to pay a dime for it.

The Illinois Executive Mansion Association selected an architect this week for a $15 million renovation project that will shore up the building and its operating systems, and in the process, improve the view for the approximately 10,000 tourists who visit annually.

Max Bever, a spokesman for the organization, said taxpayers are not being asked to pay for repairs to the mansion, which is now the residence of Gov. Bruce Rauner and his wife Diana. “This is entirely going to be paid for through private donations,” he said.

So far, nearly a third of the money has been raised.

Bever said the building, at one time maintained through state funding, had fallen into disrepair over the years, which led to the association’s push for a renovation plan and a campaign to finance it. He said no major work had been conducted on the mansion in nearly 50 years.

“The (mansion) board has put together this plan in just the last two years,” he said. “We want it to last well into the 21st century.”

The first phase of the project, replacing the roof, was completed last year at a cost of $500,000.

The next phase includes major exterior and interior work, modernization of the private residence, mechanical system upgrades, updates to landscape and grounds, and secu-

rity and accessibility enhancements.

Bever said the mansion, constructed in 1855, is the third oldest in the nation, and has great architectural value. Beyond that, it has hosted some of the most prominent people in the world, including, of course, Abraham Lincoln.

“The historical aspect is very important, and the people who have been through these doors is just incredible,” he said. “There just hasn’t been an effort to keep it up to date.”

The mansion board picked Vinci Hamp Architects for the next phase of renovations. Bever said the company, which renovated the Capitol building, specializes in historic preservation.

The board also has put out a call for contractor construction proposals.
