Park District seeks input on potential new park sites

Public hearing set for Thursday at Butterfield Park process required by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources related to the agreement.

A public hearing about the properties, including potential future uses, will be held on Thursday, July 27 at 7 p.m. at the Butterfield Park Recreation Building to solicit feedback from the community.

On January 17, 2017, the Park

Board approved the purchase of the property at 207 N. Hampshire Avenue, located northeast of East End Park. In addition, at the July 10 board meeting, the Elmhurst Park District Board of Commissioners approved a contract to purchase the former trailer park property at 0S761 Old York Road.

The purchase price for the former

trailer park property is $1.55 million, which will be funded by the City as part of the agreement. Closing on the property is currently scheduled for September 13, 2017, with a Park District option to extend until November 1 in order to complete the IDNR conversion.

On Monday morning at about 11 a.m., the Independent learned there was a large group of fire, police and other rescue vehicles gathered near the bridge over Salt Creek on St. Charles Road, just west of Rte. 83.

Fire trucks, police cars and water rescue units from the communities of not only Elmhurst and Villa Park, but also Addison, Lombard and other nearby towns required the closing of the eastbound lanes of St. Charles

Road between Monterrey and Rte 83.

While officials and workers were tight-lipped, the City of Elmhurst issued a release saying an overturned canoe had been found floating in the creek. One life cushion was recovered from the scene before rescue officials were heard to say divers would be coming in to check the waters to see if there were any victims.

A few hours later, the City issued another release saying the owner of the canoe had been found safe. That was all the information that was available as of press time.

A few residents have expressed concern about the Park Board’s recent approval of a purchase of land near Old York Road, the site of a former trailer park in the Yorkfield neighborhood at York Road, south of Butterfield Road, north of Roosevelt.

At its last meeting, the Park Board of Commissioners went into closed session to discuss the acquisition of real estate and shortly returned to an open meeting at which it was announced that the Board had approved the purchase of the property at 0S761 Old York Road for $1,550,000.

The resolution passed by a vote of 4-2. Dan Spaeth and Mary Morissette-Moll joined commissioners Kevin Graf and Timothy Sheehan in approving the purchase. Mary Kies and Carolyn Ubriaco voted against the measure.

Both Kies and Ubriaco indicated that they were not opposed to acquiring the property, but that the price was too high. Ubriaco noted the property had just been acquired for $1 million on April 17. The Park Board elected to pay more than $1.5 million for the land.

Other people have expressed concern about the size of the property, the fact that it is located in unincorporated Yorkfield and the amount of the purchase. The Independent was able to speak with Jim Rodgers, executive director of the Elmhurst Park District, to straighten out some of the details surrounding the acquisition.

Park District executive clears up misconceptions “As part of the background, the reason the [Park] Board is pursuing the acquisition is to meet requirements [of the intergovernmental agreement] after having deeded Golden Meadows Park to the City to assist with flood mitigation,” Rogers said in an exclusive interview.

deeded by the district to the City to help with flooding has to be replaced with land that is of comparable size, monetary value and recreational usefulness as the deeded property. There are also requirements set forth by the IDNR (Illinois Department of Natural Resources).”

Rogers said the District would still have to get approval from IDNR because it has to ensure that its obligations are met before signing off on the replacement property.

While the property had been sold recently for about $1 million, the Park District will be paying more than $1.5 million. That sizable increase in the cost of the acquisition left some taxpayers asking questions.

For instance, why are we spending 50% more than the property sold for just a few months ago? And why are we buying land in an unincorporated area? Technically, unincorporated

areas are not served by the Elmhurst Park District and those residents do not pay taxes to the Park District.

“The land may be in an unincorporated area, but it is adjacent to [City of Elmhurst] land and that is acceptable,” Rogers said. “The Yorkfield neighborhood does touch borders of property served by the Park District.”

Regarding the cost of the land, Rogers said it had been purchased from a private owner.

“Another part of the requirement by the DNR is that we must buy privately-owned land, we cannot swap it for public land or buy publicly-owned land,” he said. “The District has been in discussion for a few months with a private developer.”

Also, according to Rogers, the cost of the property has to do with the appraised value of the land, not necessarily the actual purchase price.

“The original agreement with the

City indicated that the land swap required us to purchase land that was a similar value to the previous land, in this case, Golden Meadows Park,” Rogers said. “It’s the appraised value of the land that matters, not the purchase price.”

It should also be noted that the land acquisition in Yorkfield is replacement property for Golden Meadows Park, it will not be used for flood mitigation, as some people apparently thought.

Rogers said closing on the sale of the property was still contingent on some requirements by the IDNR. For instance, a public hearing must be held and that is scheduled to take place this Thursday, July 27 at 7 p.m. at the Butterfield Park Recreation Building. The public is invited to find out more information and to offer feedback at that time.

Grassroots efforts rewarded with passage of bill, governor’s signature

Bruce Rauner came to the home of Kate Drury on Tuesday, July 18 to sign Charlie’s Law, which will allow children diagnosed with strep throat-related pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders—known as PANDAS/PANS—to receive intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatments that were previously denied by insurance companies. He and Conroy listened, Cullerton continued, and realized, “The need was there to get insurance coverage.”

First came a task force/advisory council to educate and inform, the senator recounted, which “kept bringing more people into the fold,” from insurance company representatives to doctors and other health professionals, and others affected by the illness.

Drury remembers experiencing resistance from both the medical and insurance fields, and through experience, learned how to get the necessary documentation and facts to combat the skepticism.

Cullerton said the idea was not to rush into legislation requiring that insurance companies pay for IVIG treatment, but to educate those involved—about diagnosing PANDAS early on to take a proactive approach, and on how there is scientific evidence that IVIG therapy works on PANDAS patients.

Doctors, he continued, became proponents of the treatment and “jumped on board” to help convince the insurance companies that the IVIG treatment was successful, and “that helped immensely.”

Drury related how it took some two months for her son to get the

right diagnosis, after Charlie’s doctor at first did not believe PANDAS existed, especially after a follow-up strep test came up negative.

However, Drury continued, by then the antibodies were already doing damage to his brain. So, with Charlie’s Law, not only will parents be able to get coverage for IVIG treatments, but PANDAS/PANS will be recognized as a bona fide illness.

For instance, Charlie’s doctor, who initially didn’t believe in PANDAS/ PANS, ended up becoming a supporter, she related.

Charlie’s mom credits that turnaround for helping prevent a repeat of the illness after her other son Jack, then 4, developed symptoms—just weeks after Charlie’s IVIG treatment—that she recognized right away.

Early intervention with antibiotics, Drury emphasized, worked so that Jack did not require IVIG treatment.

After collaborating with such entities as the National Institutes of Health to work on developing standards of care, the medical profession will “have it in their toolbox,” Drury emphasized.

Kate Drury likely didn’t think she’d wake up one day and find that her then-8-year-old son Charlie had seemingly become a different person; nor would she have known it was the beginning of a long journey that would end up in Springfield with a law partially named after him.

But, that’s where things are headed after a bill named Charlie’s Law, HB 2721, was slated to be signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner—at Drury’s Lombard home—on Tuesday, July 18.

The bill essentially states that individual and group insurance plans will be required to offer coverage for treatments of an illness referred to as PANDAS/PANS. Charlie’s own journey began with a strep throat in November 2012 and ended up—after many doctor visits—with a diagnosis of pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococci infections, or PANDAS. Symptoms of PANDAS vary but can include developing obsessive compulsive disorders, tics, an aversion to scents, phobias, behavioral aggression and age regression, to name a few.

Drury explained for “Out and About” back in 2013 how she sought psychiatric help for her son, but the medications increased his symptoms.

She then took Charlie to a doctor who discovered her son’s strep level was “off the charts.”

That doctor connected Drury with a local physician who happened to be an expert on PANDAS, and while a 28-day regimen of Augmentin provided improvement, Charlie was not fully healed.

When it was suggested that Charlie be given a treatment known as IVIG, or intravenous immunoglobulin, which replaces blood antibodies and is used therapeutically to treat other illnesses, the Drurys found out their insurance company would not cover any of the cost—$12,000 for one treatment.

While fundraisers helped raise money to help offset some of the family’s medical costs, Drury decided that it was worth fighting to get the treatment covered, so other families didn’t have to go through her experience.

She learned about Wendy Nawara—also with a son named Charlie who was diagnosed with PANDAS—who had formed a private parent group.

They and some others then launched a non-profit organization called PANDAS/PANS Advocacy, which led to their approaching local government, through Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) and Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) to hopefully get legislation passed to provide insurance coverage for IVIG treatments.

July 19 • Angel Lopez, 29, of Bensenville, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct in the 700 block of S. Hillside at around 4:05 p.m.

Police said officers responded to the report of a homeowner that saw her landscaper attempting to enter her house. Lopez stated he was trying to see if the homeowner was home, according to police.

• A complainant at a car dealership in the 300 block of W. Grand Ave. told police at around 6:53 p.m. that a suspect became upset and threatened to shoot one of their business employees. The suspect believed that he was being scammed by the business and began swearing. The complainant did not want to sign complaints, only wanting the suspect to leave the business.

July 17 A 19-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery in the 200 block of Columbia at around 4:15 a.m. Police said an argument between the suspect and the victim turned physical when the suspect slapped the victim in the face. The victim suffered injuries to his face.

July 16-July 17 A victim in the 400 block of W. Second St. told police that he had an altercation earlier between him and the suspect. The victim stated that an argument became physical when the suspect reportedly began slapping him. Victim told police he then restrained the suspect by holding her wrists down at which time the suspect allegedly bit the victim. The case is pending investigation.

July 14 A complainant in the 900 block of Hillcrest told police at around 3:14 a.m. that a suspect—a 37-year-old Elmhurst man—allegedly hit a victim in the shoulder and arm. The two began to wrestle causing victim’s head to hit the floor, according to police. The suspect reportedly unplugged the phone while the victim attempted to call 911. The suspect was charged

Police said a reporting officer responded for a disturbance near the above location. The officer made contact with Grujic and Brasko after they attempted to elude him, according to police. Police said both were found to have consumed alcohol while underage.

July 16 • Jaime D. Jaimes-Davila, 27, of Joliet, was charged with DUI, endangering the life of a child, speeding and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and York at around 12:21 a.m.

• Kesley L. Marquez, 19, of Glen Ellyn, was charged with illegal transportation of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and the Prairie Path at around 3:01 a.m. Police said and officer smelled burnt cannabis and Marquez indicated impairment.

July 15 Tricia Hansel, 46, of Rockford—a passenger in a vehicle—was issued a citation for illegal transportation of alcohol subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and I-290 at around 12:51 a.m. Police said Hansel was found to be in possession of open alcohol.

July 14 Kenneth C. Heraty, 19, of Elmhurst, was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor near St. Charles and York at around 4:03 a.m. Police said officers observed Heraty stumbling down the sidewalk barefoot, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage could be detected on Heraty’s breath. According to police, he admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the evening, and also was found to have a warrant out of DuPage County.

July 19 Mario E. Hernandez, 18, Stefan Mutovic, 20, and two juveniles, all of Elmhurst, were issued citations for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Walnut and Fremont at around 5:04 p.m.

July 18 • Steve Lindsey, 31, of Chicago, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a suspicious vehicle in the 300 block of N. Route 83 at around 12:40 a.m.

• Shamus McFarlane, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a suspicious vehicle in the 200 block of N. Oak at around 1:10 a.m.

July 17 Police said a juvenile suspect was located at Ben Allison Park by a Park District employee at around 6:41 p.m. and found to be in possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia, for which he was cited and then released to his parents.

July 16 Mark A. Leflore-Chapma, 19, of Bellwood, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia and illegally tinted windows s near York and I-290 at around 9:28 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, the odor of cannabis from inside the vehicle was detected. Leflore-Chapma stated he had a cannabis grinder in the center console, according to police. A search of the vehicle yielded a cannabis grinder and a cannabis smoking pipe from the center console, police said.

July 14 • Chauncey Cannon, 23, of Chicago—a passenger in a vehicle—was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Scott at around 9:53 p.m.

• Ryan Foster, 22, of Oak Lawn, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with one headlight subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Addison at around 12:41 a.m. Police said that an officer detected the odor of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle, and a search of the vehicle yielded four grams of cannabis, two pipes and one cannabis grinder.

July 18 A reporting officer observed two suspicious vehicles near St. Charles and Hagans tailing each other through the neighborhood at around 2:07 a.m. One vehicle was a Ford Explorer, which was later confirmed to have been stolen out of Wheaton. Both vehicles fled eastbound July 18 on I-290 from St. Charles Road.

• Brandon Inchauriga, 24, of Hutchinson, Kan., was charged with retail theft at a food store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around Harassment, threats 10:44 p.m. Police said Inchauriga took $5 in July 17-July 18 merchandise and left without paying. • Three incidents of an unknown suspect(s) entering unlocked vehicles between the above dates were reported in the 500 block of N. Indiana. Nothing of value was taken from either vehicle.

• A victim in the 200 block of Rex told police that he left his unlocked vehicle on the street overnight. The car had been rummaged through; however, nothing of value was missing. A neighbor told police he had seen a red 4-door vehicle occupied by four suspects described as three black females and one black male driving very slowly down the street in the morning.

• A victim in the 500 block of N. Willow told police that her unlocked vehicle door was slightly ajar when she came out to her driveway. The center console and glove box were left open, and cash was missing.

Feb. 8-July 18 A victim in the 900 block of Chatham told police that during the above time frame, unknown suspects took cash from her as the result of phone scams.

July 17 Michael B. Bergheger, 18, of Elmhurst, was charged with retail theft, consumption of alcohol by a minor and issued a no trespass notice at a food store in the 600 block of N. York at around 3:02 p.m. According to police, a complainant related that Bergheger concealed two containers of food from the hot bar and a bottle of liquor into a plastic bag, and then walked past the last point of sale toward the exit door.

Police said Bergheger admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the day, and related that he intended to steal the food, but not the liquor.

July 16-July 17 Police said an agent for the victim’s company, located in the 400 block of W. Wrightwood, reports that an unknown suspect smashed out a window on a company owned truck and removed a concrete saw, a chipping hammer and a power drill.

Arrest for battery follows fight in Berens Park On July 14, a victim told police that that he and a suspect mutually engaged in a fight at Berens Park between July 13-14. As a result of the fight, the victim sustained a broken nose.

The victim later saw a photograph of himself on Snapchat with a bloody nose and a threatening caption. An investigation is pending.

Resident awakes to observe suspects robbing vehicle On July 18, a victim in the 600 block of N. Kenilworth told police that she woke up, looked out her bedroom window at around 5:47 a.m. and observed three suspects described as black males in the backyard. Suspect #2 reportedly entered her unlocked vehicle and the others were nearby. She went outside, and upon see-

ing the victim, the suspects ran westbound, according to police. Taken from the vehicle were one gold watch and one silver watch. The first suspect was described as a teenager, very tall with curly hair (almost like a perm), wearing eyeglasses and a blue striped shirt. The second suspect was described as a teenager wearing a red T-shirt. The third suspect was described as a teenager, wearing no shirt. All three suspect were wearing saggy blue jeans.

July 19 • Police said Reggial J. Howard Jr., 34, of Chicago, turn himself in at around 12:36 p.m. on a DuPage County warrant.

• Police said officers responded for a warrant service in the 300 block of N. Ridgeland at around 8:53 p.m. According to police, Gina Polito, 38, of Elmhurst, was located and found to be wanted out of DuPage County.

July 14 Police said Nicola Clemente, 52, of Elmhurst, came into the police department at around 5:42 p.m. to surrender himself on an active warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

Viewpoint Slices of life He is growing like a weed. But it’s a weed we cultivate, a weed we help grow. We will never pull him up by the roots or attempt to eradicate his existence. He is growing like a weed and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Although he’s the little brother, he’s always measured taller than the other two were at the same age on our makeshift growth chart in the kitchen behind the basement door where dozens of pencil lines are marked with names and dates, growing higher on the wall as the years have passed. It won’t be long before he surpasses the heights of his brothers, who have probably stopped growing.

He is growing like a weed. They all do, at this stage, at some point.

The same thing happened with our other two sons. One day they were tender, green seedlings looking up

into their mom’s eyes and then the surge of adolescence hit.

It seems like they go to bed as little boys and wake up taller and ganglier than the night before.

Their arms and legs stretch out first, with the rest of their body catching up soon thereafter. Their calorie intake at this point seems infinite (because it is). Their feet look too big for their bodies. Voices deepen. They tower over their mom who now finds herself looking up

at them.

And then, just as soon, this gangly awkwardness turns into the confident swagger that nature intended. Muscles fill in the previously lanky spots. Jawlines become chiseled. Shoulders widen.

Boys become men. Girls, in their own set of changes, become women, and things like prom and dating loom on the horizon. Sigh.

I’ve been through this before; I know some things are as inevitable as him growing taller than me. He’s got his own ideas about the way the world works. Everything I do is embarrassing in his eyes. I’m ready for this and won’t feel the sting of hurt so much this time. I think. I hope.

Oh my goodness, though, he is my last. Our last. The great final crescendo to our parenting symphony. It brings tears to my

eyes: ending this portion of our lives, even though we are ready for the next. Most days.

I can’t help but feel a lump in my throat, even when he is telling me I am embarrassing. Especially when he is telling me I am embarrassing.

Because I realize even this is a stage. Short-lived. Fleeting.

He is my baby. Always will be, although he’d probably deny it if asked now.

I told him the other day how happy I am we added him to our brood. Four seemed like a lot. It is a lot and my husband and I talked long and hard before deciding to go for one last caboose. He was the result. When I told him about my happiness regarding his being, he smiled and gave me a genuine hug.

“Thanks, Mom,” was all he said.

It was all he needed to say. Heck, the hug would have been sufficient

to make me grab for the Kleenex.

He is growing like a weed, at a speed we can’t comprehend.

A metamorphosis is taking place before our eyes. He has ideas and goals for the future. I respect him for that, but it is another sign of his impending independence and eventual adulthood.

He is growing up and preparing to fly. We will blink and it will be over. Soon the growth spurts will be a thing of the past. He will tower over the rest of us. And if I’ve done this mom-thing right I will continue look up to him – in more ways than one.

In my opinion

What I’ve learned during summer vacation so far I’ve learned that I am out of touch with what’s trending (gee, what a shocker). I got a new phone (it was time to trade in the old Note 4) and played for a moment with ringtones. I didn’t know any of the “most popular” songs or artists.

And I don’t care.

But I do now know the difference between ringtone and ringback.

And I discovered I had a bank of

ringtones saved to a wishlist default from several phones ago that had magically transferred with every phone update.

I also learned that I can be more patient than I ever thought possible. Having to visit the cell phone store on two consecutive days with the requisite waiting for them to do the paperwork and transfer my contacts and images not once but

twice (I have over 2000 contacts and I have no idea how many photos) was a testament to how long I can sit without having a phone to fiddle with.

The second day visit was better than expected because the young customer service rep is an aspiring author (fantasy fiction is his bag) so we were able to make interesting conversation while the process

lagged on. He was inspired to meet someone who works from home and makes a living playing with words. It made my day to make his day.

What else has happened this summer? Not only did I discover that I do indeed have a modicum of patience, I have also discovered that I am someone who no longer paints my own toenails. Maybe it’s because I need my reading glasses to see how messy I’m being or maybe I just like the massage chair.

Even if I don’t have time for a full pedicure, I will pay the ten bucks just to have a polish change. Summer time, and the living is easy.

This summer vacation I’ve also learned that I can cut my own hair nearly as good as many stylists can.

Trimming the back of my head (and shaving my neck) is a skill set I am newly proud of and will gladly put on my resume.

However, I doubt I will ever submit a resume again. Having the flexibility that I do is golden. Being my own boss is not always easy and in essence, I audition for every

new client but the perks are worth any long hours because I get to set those hours.

What I’ve learned this summer vacation about driving is not really new, just a reminder. I love road tripping. Packing a bag and snacks and listening to tunes with my hubby is pure joy. I can drive for miles and miles and miles, but at this age decide it’s a good idea to stop every two hours to stretch.

This summer I much prefer the scenic route to the interstate, unless of course it’s dark, raining, and the scenic route is a tight, curvy mountain highway.

I’ve discovered kombucha on tap is my new addiction and every flavor is delightfully yummy. I no longer drink soda but this sugar-tea stuff feeds my fizzy pleasure and I down a growler a day. Well, not quite, but close. (On tap is waaayyy better than what you buy in a bottle.)

Summer is not over and I want to learn more. I may not know the latest movies or television shows or pop acts, but I know I like outdoor concerts, hiking with my honey, quiet time in the kayak, and pretty scenery, and a sweet drink. Cheers!

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a meeting on July 18 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven members of the board attended the meeting.

There were no public comments.

Dr. Moyer discusses draft operational plan The meeting included a presentation by the district’s superintendent, Dr. David Moyer, about the district’s draft operational plan for 2017-20. Moyer gave an overview of the draft, which he said was a cul-

mination of Phase I of the Focus 205 process, which provided two years of community engagement. The introduction of the plan stated District 205 promotes a culture of innovation. The district’s vision, stated the draft, is to ensure that all its students graduate college and are career and life ready. The introduction stated the district’s graduates must be proficient in six “Cs”—Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, Character and Citizenship.

The introduction added that the district “recognizes that its primary resource is its people—its students, employees and the citizens and community it serves.”

Moyer said the district administration intends to regularly review

the district’s operational plan. He said the draft of the operational plan is based on an assessment of existing practices and community input.

He said the finalized operational plan would serve as a road map to guide future decisions. He also said the plan would be flexible. Moyer said the administration would present the plan to the board annually and make revisions if necessary.

strategies to convey the plan’s major ideas to the public. He said the district will continue to solicit additional community input as the plan is finalized.

ETC settlement agreements passed by consent Board members voted unanimously during the meeting to approve the superintendent’s consent agenda. The items in that agenda included the approval of two settlement agreements with the Elmhurst Teachers’ Council (ETC). One of the agreements, settled in the amount of about $28,000, resolved a grievance filed by the ETC regarding step advancement salary schedules of three district teachers. The other agreement, for about $2,500, was related

to cover IVIG treatments.

“It was the right thing to do,” Breen added.

Cullerton also pointed out how “it takes the federal government to set in motion a ‘standard of care,’ ” for which he and other legislators didn’t want to wait.

Now, the senator said proudly, other states are beginning to look to Illinois as a model for how to get such a treatment law enacted, and he credits Drury and Nawara for their tenacity.

They were “absolutely fantastic with sitting down with legislators from their home offices,” he praised, and said of his constituent, “I’m incredibly proud of the work Kate did.”

Drury is modest about her efforts, saying she did what any parent would do, including testifying in Springfield a number of times.

“They got to hear our stories,” she added.

Besides Illinois families, “It’s really going to help other states,” Drury said, adding that the advocacy organization is getting calls from families looking for help.

In the meantime, “We’re going to move forward with education,” Drury said, for medical, therapeutic and educational professionals.

She said that while the outcome is rewarding for families and children, and that going to Springfield has been “empowering,” at the same time, “It’s so bittersweet.”

That is, Drury continued, other children affected by PANDAS/ PANS, and who did not get the diagnosis or treatment right away, have had to suffer while waiting for the legislation to pass.

“Now these kids are going to be able to have the tools,” she added.

As for Charlie, his mom says he remembers “bits and pieces” about his illness, such as being scared, not being able to eat or touch certain things, and the headaches.

At the same time, “Charlie’s excited; he’s proud,” Drury said.

The bottom line, though, for Drury, is, “These children are finally going to be recognized ... get their lives back.”

York excels at SkillsUSA national championship Four students named first place winners

The Independent recently learned that a group of students from York High School had made an outstanding showing at the Skills USA National Championship held in Louisville earlier this summer.

Following the state competition in Springfield in late April, five students qualified to go to the national event including: Jeremy Olson who took 1st place in Automotive Service Technology; Mike Falco got 1st place in Collision Repair Technology; Joey Gemini received 1st place in Technical Drafting; Matt Shepherd took 2nd place in Screen Printing Technology; and Dylan Kalchik who placed 3rd in Principles of Physics/Engineering Technology. The national competition drew students from all over the U.S. as well as Puerto Rico and Guam.

Faculty members of the Industrial Technology Department who

helped students with the competition include Wendy Albert, Division Chair for Technology & Applied Arts, Department Leader Ken Ross, Dan Calenberg, York Industrial Arts Teacher Ron Robak and Joe Stolz.

Robak announced the four winners from York from the national competition. They were: Michael Falco, 6th ​​ in the nation in ​ collision repair technology; Joey Gemini, ​12th ​​in​ ​​the nation​ ​in Technical Drafting CAD; Jeremy Olson, 24th in the nation in ​auto service technology; and Matthew Shepherd, 11th ​​in​ the ​​nation​ ​in screen printing technology. It should be noted that although Matt was not listed as attending the national competition as of last spring, he was able to compete because the first place winner for screen printing did not want to attend and Matt was the runner up.

Jefferson School installs new playground

In a much-needed move, the Jefferson Elementary School community of parents, PTA and school officials came together to make plans for a new playground at the school which would provide not only physical fitness and fun at recess, but also a greater degree of safety for the students.

According to one parent, Kathy Fromm, who coordinated the effort, the school held two fundraisers that brought in $65,000 even quicker than they expected.

“We could have paid for installation, but it would have been considerably more money, so we had our school community volunteers to come out and help install the piec-

es,” Fromm told the Independent at the site on Saturday, July 22. “I don’t know what we would have done without our dads! Many of them came out and gave their time and it was very much appreciated. They all worked together and made it a lot of fun.”

Fromm also said the plans for the yard include an outdoor classroom.

The only real obstacle to the task, which didn’t seem to bother the installers, was the mud and puddles of water standing in the area they were working. Luckily, everyone dressed appropriately, some in rubber boots.

Elmhurst Hospital Emergency Department to expand Construction of $600,000 project begins in August

Elmhurst Hospital is beginning a renovation and expansion project that will increase the size of its Emergency Department (ED) from 31 to 39 rooms.

The new rooms will be built in what is currently the Centralized Admissions Area, a unit adjacent to the ED. Construction will start in August and is targeted for completion in the fall.

The additional rooms are needed because of a dramatic increase in the number of patients seeking treatment in the ED. In calendar year (CY) 2012, its first full year of operation following the opening of the new Elmhurst Hospital in 2011, the ED had 51,190 patient visits. In CY 2016, 65,405 patients were treated in the ED, a 28 percent increase over 2012. The ED was originally designed to handle an annual volume of 55,000 patients.

“The surge in volume has resulted in overcrowding and an increase in wait times,” said Adam Johnson, Service Line Director, Emergency Medicine &

Urgent Care Services. “It became very apparent that we needed more space to handle the number of patients coming through the ED.” The $600,000 project is funded by the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation.

“The Emergency Department is one area of the hospital we’ll all likely visit at one time or another, either as a patient or with a loved one who needs treatment,” said Susan Tyburski, Executive Director, EMH Foundation.

“We’re thankful to the many donors who’ve made this expansion possible.”

The Foundation’s efforts to support the ED expansion are part of ongoing efforts to raise funds to address other critical space and program needs at Elmhurst Hospital, including Critical Care and Inpatient Units, which are nearing or at full capacity on many days, as well as expansion of Behavioral Health Services and preventive programs at the Diabetes Learning

Center.

“We’ve experienced a tremendous increase in demand for services in many areas of the hospital and our projections show the growth will continue,” said Pamela Dunley, President & CEO, Elmhurst Hospital. “We are looking to partner with members of our community to help address our space needs. Contributions to the Foundation are critical so we can continue providing the quality of care our residents deserve.”

The York varsity soccer team went 8-1-1 and won the summer league with thrilling victories over St. Ignatius in the semis (5-4 in penalty kicks after a 0-0 game) and then beating Addison Trail 1-0 for the championship.

Elmhurst American Legion baseball team concludes season Muddogs participate in division tournament; Finish summer with 13 wins

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team saw its season come to an end at the recent 2nd Division tournament hosted by Barrington.

Post 187, which was the runner-up at the 11th District tournament and earned a spot in the Division tournament, opened play with an 11-1 loss to Barrington Post 158.

Elmhurst jumped out to a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning only to have Barrington counter with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Barrington scored two more in

the bottom of the third, four in the bottom of the fourth and then single runs in the fifth sixth and eighth innings to enact the 10-run rule.

Barrington had 13 hits in the contest. Elmhurst was limited to four hits. Neither team made a fielding error.

Fenton’s Alejandro Orosco had a hit. York’s Nick Lee also had a hit and drove in Elmhurst’s only run.

York’s Tamaine Durr also had a hit and Brendan Connell had a hit and scored Elmhurst’s only run.

Of Elmhurst’s four hits, three went for extra bases. Lee had a double, while Orosco and Durr each had

a triple. Connell stole a base.

Elmhurst struck out 13 times against Barrington pitching.

In that Elmhurst first inning, Connell singled to right. After two outs and Connell still at first, Lee doubled to center, scoring Connell.

Orosco pitched the first 4 1/3 innings and struck out two. IC Catholic Prep product Austin Reed pitched the final three innings and recorded a strikeout.

Elmhurst then forfeited its consolation bracket game to Elgin Post 57 and was eliminated from the double-elimination tournament.

“We had two players with inju-

ries and a few others were sick who played in the extreme heat in the game against Barrington and some others had prescheduled vacations,” noted Post 187 coach Mike Biondo.

Post 187, after a multi-year hiatus from American Legion baseball, finished the season with a 13-10 record.

“For the first year I was pleased with how our season went,” said Biondo. “We will have players coming back next year who understand the competitiveness of American Legion baseball and the high level of play that must be brought to their game every day.”

Post 187 held a team awards banquet Tuesday at the Elmhurst American Legion hall. There, five team awards were given out for MVP, pitcher of the year, offensive player of the year, defensive player of the year and a hustle award. The Independent will have those winners in next week’s edition.

Biondo noted the Elmhurst Legion baseball program will expand next year with the addition of a 17U junior Legion team in addition to the traditional 19U senior Legion squad.

Tryouts for the 17U junior Legion team will be held in late August, Biondo noted.

“Our summer went pretty well,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Kelsey James.

The Lisle summer league was IC Catholic Prep’s only in-state game competition during the summer. The team also went to Michigan in late June to scrimmage a team from Lake Shore High School.

James said one key positive from the summer was the development of numerous players from last year’s team.

“What was nice to see over the summer was some of the girls who

hadn’t played a lot last year step up,” she said. “We played a good amount of games and we were missing some players and we were still able to be successful based on the work everybody put in.”

That group James spoke about included the likes of Gabi Zanoni, Jaida Smith and Julissa Unzueta.

“They had really good summers,” she said. “Julissa was hurt last year and didn’t play a lot. It was nice to see all the girls come back and work hard and get ready to play. This is my third year with this set of girls and it’s nice to see them buying into what we

are trying to do. They came to camp in June and worked hard. They really made a statement.”

James said the trip to Michigan also was beneficial. “It was nice to see a different style of play,” she said. “The team we scrimmaged was more aggressive. I think that will get us mentally prepared for possibly seeing that with some of the other teams we’ll play down the road. The trip also was more of a team bonding thing more than anything.”

James noted Georgia Mahnke and Kiersten King are back in the program after taking a year off. “We’re

very excited that they are back,” she said. “We’re looking forward to having nine seniors on the team and they all have experience. We’re looking to make a nice run.”

That group of returners also includes the likes of senior Claire Gibler, now a four-year varsity player, Sophie Zanoni, Josie Lytton and Smith.

“I was very encouraged with how we looked during the summer,” said James. “We have a lot of good returning players and some talented kids coming into the program. Our summer was very successful.”

In doubles, Gage Burkhardt and Zoe Burkhardt were 8-1 winners at No. 2 doubles in 17s. Evan Sedlacek and Simon Krukowski were 8-4 winners at No. 4 doubles in 17s. Cara McGovern and Cara Well were 8-4 winners in 17s No. 5 doubles action.

At the 15s level, Sonali Kumar was an 8-4 winner at No. 3 singles.

were 8-3 winners at No. 1 doubles, while Michael Polowsky and Brian Niederman were 8-2 winners at No. 2 doubles.

York also faced the River Forest Tennis Club in West Suburban Tennis League play and lost 12-0 at River Forest Tennis Club. York dropped to 2-2 in West Suburban play.

York also scored a recent 11-3 West Suburban victory over Oak Park Country Club to move to 3-2 in that league and 6-3 overall.

In the match at Oak Park Country Club, in the 17s singles, Aleksina Jovic was a 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 winners at the No. 1 position. Isabella Nicoli was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 2 singles, while Jonathan Nikoleit was a

6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles.

In 17s doubles, Cate Duhig and Jovic were 6-1, 7-5 winners at No. 1. Nicoli and Nikoleit were 6-1, 6-2 winners at No. 2 doubles, while Lauren Fonorow and Gianna Nikoleit were 6-1, 6-1 winners at No. 3 doubles.

Over in 14s play, Gianna Nikoleit was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles, while Paul Nicoli was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 4 singles.

14s doubles action saw Paul Nicoli and Krukowski score a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Morgan Burnham and Keira Polach were 6-3, 6-1 winners at No. 2 doubles. Claire Converse and Maria Chornij were 6-2, 4-6 (11-9) winners at No. 3 doubles.

York concluded play in one of the leagues with a conference tournament this past Friday and was scheduled to finish off its season Wednesday with a second conference tournament.

After the Oak Park match, Krukowski was leading the team with a 6-0 record in summer play. Paul Nicoli was 6-1, while Isabella Nicoli was 5-3. Samantha Kent and Fonorow were both 4-0, while Gianna Nikoleit, Jonathan Nikoleit, Well, Sedlacek and Cara McGovern each were 3-0. Jonna Menendie, Gage Burkhardt and Jovic each were 3-1.

York had 45 players who had at least one summer match under their belt through the Oak Park contest.

Former Hoffman Estates High swimmer previously coached at Buffalo Grove High School

New York girls swimming and diving coach Jeff Skalon is ready to hit the ground running.

“I knew York had a great swimming program and a great aquatic program,” he said. “There’s a good background and a lot of tradition at the school. I’m very excited to be at York.

Skalon, who swam and played water polo at Hoffman Estates High School and was an All-American swimmer and 2012 Heartland Conference MVP at Monmouth College, also will teach physical education full-time at York.

“Offering a full-time teaching job as well was a big selling point,” he said. “I feel like any time a coach is in a single sport you should be involved as much as you can with other things and willing to help out. We’ll see what more the athletics program needs. I’m here to support and help out where I can. Giving that support to other athletic teams is important.

I’d like to be as involved with the aquatic and York athletics aspect as possible. I’ll support the athletic programs any way I can.”

Skalon stressed the academic component of his work at York is key.

“It’s absolutely important,” he said.

“The whole reason I went to school was to become a teacher. Being able to teach regularly is why I got into this profession. Coaching is the fun part. You get a lot of joy being a swim coach, but teaching is the passion here.”

Skalon previously was the head girls water polo coach at Buffalo Grove High School the past four years and was the head boys swimming and diving coach the past three years. He also served as Buffalo Grove’s aquatic director. Skalon also

helped coach in the Monmouth College program during his senior year.

He’s also been a lifeguard, water-polo coach and swimming coach in the Schaumburg Park District.

“I feel it’s all about bringing out the best in the athletes,” he said of his coaching philosophy. “You talk about the student-athlete, the student is first on the athletic side. You bring out the best in them by learning who they are and by continuing to build their character, which plays a large part in it.”

Skalon said another benefit is walking into an established program that has enjoyed success over the years.

“I’m going to continue to build on the tradition and the success at York,” he said. “The girls’ conference (West Suburban Conference Silver Division) is very competitive and I would like to get York into that competitive aspect of the conference. That is something that will take a little time. We’re going to keep developing the culture and look to build off it. The programs in our conference are very competitive, but it took time for those teams, too. I want to bring out the best in these girls and have

fun with it. A lot of them had success with Sarah (former York coach Krizmanic) and I want to build on.”

Skalon also is impressed with the York feeder program (Elmhurst Swim Team). “There is a great club program in place with Elmhurst,” he said. “I want to work with them and build a relationship. I want to build positive bridges with the clubs around the area. Hopefully the girls will continue to swim and be competitive year-round. But competitive doesn’t have to be in swimming. If they are representing their school and community in other ways, that’s going to help us as well.”

Skalon recently finished York’s summer camp. “I did that with Mark Laurich (York boys’ coach). It’s been great,” he said. “It was an opportunity to dive in and see what the girls and boys are like and get to know them. Also, the community has been very kind since I took over. Dave Davis (former York girls’ coach) is there and he understands the program and he’s helped me as well. Everybody has made me feel welcome. It’s a very family-oriented swimming community here. I want to build off that.”

Recent heavy rains caused flooding in areas of DuPage County and the Health Department is cautioning residents to try to avoid flood water because it may be contaminated.

Executive Director Karen Ayala says, “It’s important to protect yourself and your family because floodwater may look harmless, but could be a mixture of many things.”

The ground is saturated in many areas which can cause septic systems to fail, and waste water to mix with surface and ground water.

Floodwaters can contain bacteria, fecal material, viruses, and other organisms that may cause disease.

If you will be cleaning, volunteering, or around floodwaters for any reason, take precautions to avoid injury and possible infections:

• Wear protective clothing, gloves, long pants, long sleeves and boots if you must be around floodwater to clean or volunteer.

• If you have a cut or injury where the skin is broken and has been exposed to flood water, contact your health care provider about the need for a tetanus shot or other treatment.

• Be sure to apply insect repellent containing DEET when outdoors to protect against mosquitoes and ticks.

• See your doctor if you have a fever or rash after a tick bite.

It started as an off-beat baseball promotion called “Teen Night” designed to sell tickets at Comiskey Park and gain listeners for a fledgling FM radio

station—until it devolved into one of the most infamous events in Chicago’s rich baseball history. Disco Demolition Night exploded on July 12, 1979 in the middle of a White Sox doubleheader and it remains one of the city’s most controversial sports history moments. Media sponsor: WLUP-FM. Choral Union holds auditions Love to sing? Singers interested in singing with a full orchestra and challenging their vocal skills are invited to audition for Elmhurst Choral Union. ECU’s season includes music

by Copland, Rutter, Randall Thompson, Howard Hanson, and arrangements by choral legend Robert Shaw.

Membership is open to singers with previous choral experience or the ability to read music. Openings are available in all voice ranges.

A volunteer will respond to schedule an audition time.

Auditions involve a vocal warm-up with a piece of the singer’s choice.
