Bellock resigns early to accept state position Elmhurst resident slated to complete her term

State Rep. and Deputy Minority Leader Patti Bellock (R-Hinsdale), who had already announced her plans not to seek re-election in the fall, issued a release last week stating that she is resigning her post early to serve as director of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services. Gov. Bruce Rauner appointed her to the position, which became effective July 11.

After Bellock’s announcement, Republican leaders worked together to choose a person to serve out the remainder of Bellock’s term and on Monday, July 16, it was announced that the person to be appointed would be Elmhurst resident Deanne Mazzo-

chi. Mazzochi’s most recent accomplishments can be summed up in that she served as Board Chairwoman at College of DuPage and had the tough job of removing the President of the College from his position and all the additional challenges that came along with the decision. (See sepa-

rate story in this issue.) She was to be sworn in on Tuesday, July 24 on the lawn of Elmhurst College in front of Hammerschmidt Chapel.

Mazzochi, a Republican, has been running for election to Bellock’s seat along with Democrat James “Jim” Caffrey, who is also an Elmhurst res-

ident.

Caffrey objects to appointment Caffrey indicated his disappointment in the Republicans’ decision to appoint someone running for the seat to fill the spot left vacant by Bellock.

Outbreak at event in Skokie prompts action at county, state level

The DuPage County Health Department is working with local, state, and federal public health officials to investigate an increase in the number of Cyclospora illnesses in several Illinois counties. A new outbreak of cyclosporiasis linked to a private event in Skokie was identified this week Since mid-May, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has received confirmation of 266 cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic Cyclospora parasite. Of those, 110 reported eating salads produced for McDonald’s restaurants days before becoming ill. The Iowa Department of Health has noted a similar increase in cases.

“Over 30 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported in DuPage County since May of this year, which is more than four times the number of cases reported in 2017,” said Karen Ayala, health department executive director. “Although travelers to tropical countries may be at increased risk, this infection can be acquired in the United States as well.”

How the infection is spread People can become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with feces (stool) that contains the parasite. Cyclospora is spread by a person putting something in his or her mouth that is contaminated with infected stool. Cyclospora is not spread directly from one person to another.

Cyclospora infection can be treated with specific antibiotics. If not treated, the illness may last for a few days to a month or longer. If you think you might be infected with Cyclospora, you should see your doctor.

Symptoms begin about a week to up to two-weeks after exposure, but some people who are infected may not have any symptoms at all.

Symptoms may include frequent bouts of watery diarrhea (the most common symptom); loss of appetite and weight; cramping, bloating, and/ or increased gas; nausea (vomiting is less common); fatigue; and, a lowgrade fever.

Recent Cyclospora cases have been linked to fresh produce including raspberries, basil, snow peas, and lettuce.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following safe fruit and vegetable handling guidelines: Wash: Wash your hands with soap and warm water before and after handling or preparing fruits and vegetables. Wash cutting boards, dishes, utensils, and countertops with soap and hot water between the preparation of raw meat, poultry, and seafood products and the preparation of fruits and vegetables that will not be cooked.

Prepare: Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating, cutting, or cooking. Scrub firm fruits and vegetables, such as melons and cucumbers, with a clean produce brush. Cut away any damaged or bruised areas on fruits and vegetables before preparing and eating.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement, criminal trespass to property, vandalism

July 18 A complainant near York and Vallette told police at around 3:45 p.m. that while stopped at a red light, he observed an unknown suspect described as a white male punch out a window on a white Toyota Rav4. A suspect described as a white female exited the driver’s side and proceeded to move to the passenger side of the vehicle. The unknown white male suspect then walked to the driver’s side and both left the scene at a high rate of speed and were not located.

July 16 A victim in the 900 block of N. Oaklawn told police at around 8:02 p.m. that his Mercedes S550 was keyed while parked in a lot.

The victim suspects a recently terminated employee keyed his vehicle.

July 14 Officers responded to a traffic crash in the 700 block of N. Howard at around 3:31 p.m.

Subsequent to the crash, a suspect reportedly picked up the side mirror which had broken off of the vehicle he was driving, and struck the victim’s driver’s side window with it.

Police said officers responded to the 700 block of N. Lombard at around 3:31 p.m. for the report of a vehicle that crashed into a house. Following the crash, a suspect reportedly walked across the street, picked up a landscaping brick and threw the brick at the victim’s parked, unattended vehicle in an effort to shatter the driver’s side window. Medics arrived on scene and transported the suspect to Elmhurst Hospital for evaluation.

July 12-July 14 A complainant in the 300 block of S. Kenilworth told police that sometime between the above dates, a large wood carving was removed from an exterior door. The wood carving was later located by a reporting officer in a donation bin located on the east side of a church. The suspect left in an unknown direction. Further investigation is pending.

July 13 Police said officers responded to a call for a report of criminal damage to property in the 100 block of S. Prospect at around 7:24 a.m.

According to police, a suspect had broken out the driver’s side window of a victim’s vehicle to obtain his car keys. The suspect reportedly used a brick in an attempt to gain access into a chapel damaging two key card panels. The suspect was served a no trespass notice and released. Charges are pending.

July 14 Zachary J. Zajkowski, 19, of Roselle, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 11:38 p.m.

Police said officers responded to the report of a motorist assist with a Jeep that was in a ditch. According to police, Zajkowski related he purposely drove into the ditch, and his vehicle was subsequently stuck.

July 17 A 44-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 100 block of E. Diversey at around 6:08 a.m. Officers responded for a complaint of a physical domestic in progress. Upon arrival, police said the suspect admitted to striking the victim.

A victim’s mother told police at around 12:24 p.m. that they were involved in an argument. During the argument, the suspect reportedly threw a remote control at the victim. The victim was transported to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment.

A victim in the 400 block of N. Addison told police at around 5:06 p.m. that she had been involved in a verbal argument with the suspect that turned physical. Due to conflicting statements and no signs of injury, no arrests were made.

July 16 Police said officers responded to the report of a domestic at the above location. A victim told police he and a suspect were engaged in a verbal argument when the suspect reportedly pushed him. The suspect denied making physical contact with the victim. No complaints to be signed and they agreed to stay away from each other for the evening.

July 14 Police said that while an officer was on patrol near York and St. Charles at around 3:23 a.m., the officer made contact with an intoxicated pedestrian who stated he was involved in a physical altercation with his brother. The brother told police he was involved in a verbal argument with the alleged intoxicated subject.

Both subjects did not have any physical injuries, and due to conflicting stories, no arrests were made.

Nicole Coletta, 27, of Lombard, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 2:35 a.m.

July 14 Kyle A. Ezell, 20, of Villa Park, was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor in the 300 block of W. St. Charles at around 2:12 a.m. Police said while an officer

Stinson was found to be in possession of cannabis and DUI, according to police.

July 12 Abundio Soriano, 51, of Bensenville, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Diversey at around 10:02 p.m.

July 12 A victim in the 400 block of W. St. Charles told police at around 1 p.m. that she was threatened by her estranged husband. The victim was unable to provide a reporting officer with a current phone number or address for suspect.

James, 33, of Maywood, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and illegal transportation of open alcohol near York and Butterfield at around 7:41 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a subject asleep behind the wheel, James was found to be in possession of cannabis and open alcohol.

Aaron Rollins, 18, of Chicago, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in the 300 block of S. Poplar at around 2:26 p.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for a report of a suspicious male knocking on a complainant’s door, looking into windows of the house and looking into his vehicle.

According to police, a reporting officer made contact with Rollins, who stated he was selling candy bars. Police said Rollins was found to be in possession of cannabis.

July 17 A victim in the 200 block of W. Wrightwood told police at around 8:13 a.m. that an unknown suspect infected the company’s computer server with a crypto virus and is demanding ransom payment in bitcoin. The victim wanted to report the incident in order to file an insurance claim.

July 15 Warren Ellison, 31, of Bensenville, was charged with theft of lost or mislaid property in the 400 block of N. York at around 11:27 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect allegedly took her Samsung cellphone which was on a counter at the above location.

Upon reviewing security footage, Ellison was observed taking the phone, placing it in his pocket and leaving the store, according to police. Police said Ellison was later located and taken into custody.

Joseph Pulido, 44, of Elmhurst, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 8:57 p.m. Police said Pulido took a bottle of liquor, put it in his pocket and left without paying. Pulido was located and taken into custody, according to police.

Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of E. Third at around 1:10 p.m. A victim told police that while at a store, he may have left his wallet on the cashier check stand. The wallet contained several credit cards, an Illinois driver’s license, and a passport card. The victim contacted his credit card companies and learned fraudulent transactions were made with two of the credit cards. All the cards have since been cancelled.

Nybo sponsors new gun safety bill Legislation allows identification of potentially dangerous individuals

In an initiative to prevent future mass shootings and attacks, a new gun safety law sponsored by State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) al-

lows the public to identify and stop potentially dangerous individuals from endangering others or themselves with a firearm. Governor Bruce Rauner signed the measure into law in Chicago on July 16.

“House Bill 2354 establishes the Lethal Violence Order of Protection Act, creating an official process and outlet for anyone to speak up, identify and prevent a troubled individual

from committing a horrifying act,” said Nybo. “It’s my hope we can begin to stop future tragedies before they start and set a proactive example in Illinois that shows we take our residents’ safety seriously.”

The Lethal Violence Order of Protection Act allows family members, acquaintances or law enforcement to petition the court to identify and issue an ex parte order for an indi-

Police said that subsequent to responding to a burglar alarm in the 200 block of E. Butterfield at around 8:45 a.m., officers identified the employee, Vanessa Quinones, 45, of Elmwood Park, on scene. According to police, Quinones was found to be wanted on a warrant by Illinois State Police.

Look around; they’re everywhere. Not smartphones, but they frequently work in partnership, like Fred and Wilma but in a less caveperson style.

People wear them on the wrist like people used to wear watches, which they are, but that’s just the tip of the flintstone, dear friend.

They’re known by a variety of names: activity trackers, fitness trackers, smartwatches – but they all do most of the same things.

They keep track of, well, you.

The little gizmo measures your activity. It counts the number of stairs you climb each day. It keeps track of a variety of workouts, your ability to recover after a work out and tallies how many steps you take. It even sets up goals for you and congratulates you when you meet them. GOAL MET! This is only the beginning. A tracker can monitor your heart rate, stress level, calories burned as well as quantity and quality of sleep – giving totals for light, deep and REM sleep. It also gives the number of minutes I am awake when I am awake each night. I was surprised it’s usually about three minutes and not the three hours I’d always thought.

It pairs with your smartphone to tell you the temperature outside, access your playlist and alert you to text messages and phone calls.

As a bonus, it even tells time.

Like a watch used to do.

It’s also a bit bossy, telling me to “Move!” after periods of inactivity.

Plus while hopefully lessening the girth of my hips it makes me appear hip. Look at me! I am so serious about fitness I have to track my activities and workouts.

(Or lack thereof, but you didn’t hear that from me.)

It was fun and novel, wearing the tracker and knowing my heart rate and number of steps I’d taken before noon. I found it impacting my behavior, which I guess is probably the point.

After supper each night, I’d check my progress and if I was low on my steps or stair climbing, I’d find myself filling the evening with either of the above. My

husband was curious about my newfound evening activities, “What are you doing?”

“Got to get my steps in,” I told him.

Then last weekend, we were at the lake – floating on the boat, as calm and lazy as could be. The next day, when I checked my tracker, it showed I’d been highlystressed the previous day.

“I guess I was stressed yesterday,” I told my husband.

“Maybe I better relax.”

“How do you know you were stressed?”

“My activity tracker told me.”

He shook his head. “I think you’re relying too much on that tracker.”

He had a point. So I took it off.

For a whole day. Cold turkey.

For a full 24 hours I had no idea how many steps I took or how much REM sleep I’d gotten. I didn’t know whether I was stressed or over-tired or if my heart had reached its peak rate at all that day.

I was back to the dark ages, like a caveperson, with no technology to tell me to “Move!” I was free.

Still, I missed the feedback.

Information is power. All those features in one little doohickey are pretty amazing. As long as you don’t let them get the best of you.

Which I don’t think I did, or at least I like to think I didn’t – at least not that much.

I could go on and on, but I better stop now. My tracker just directed me to “Move!” It’s time to get some steps in. And maybe a couple flights of stairs while I’m at it.

Cullerton: Rauner has endangered Illinois voters Gov. Rauner took steps last week to endanger Illinois voter’s personal information, according to State Senator Tom Cullerton.

Rauner vetoed Senate Bill 2273 which would prohibit the Illinois State Board of Elections from sharing any voter information with the controversial Crosscheck system or any other interstate voter registration program other than the mandated Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC).

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is outraged that the governor supports storing sensitive voter registration information unnecessarily on insecure servers.

“Elections empower residents to take an active role in the democratic process. Illinois’ citizens should be able to register to vote without fear that their personal information may be susceptible to hackers,” Cullerton said.

Illinois currently participates in

two multistate voter registration sharing programs: Crosscheck and ERIC. State elections officials say the ERIC system provides more reliable information and greater security for personal information than Crosscheck.

Crosscheck is managed by Kansas’ Secretary of State Kris Kobach, and according to researchers at Harvard and Stanford, the program compares data that is insufficient to produce dependable results.

Astoundingly, researchers found Crosscheck was 99 percent more likely to purge legitimate voter from the rolls as opposed to illegitimate ones. The system is also a glaring security risk, as it uses minimal IT security and its operators have demonstrated a disregard for basic cybersecurity protocol, leading to the personal information of Illinois of voters vulnerable to hacking, tampering

and manipulation.

The data is stored on a standard server in Arkansas, which the state admits is insecure.

Illinois’ election board’s 2016 election hacking was referenced in the indictment of 12 Russian hackers which resulted in the theft of the information of approximately 500,000 voters.

State Board of Elections officials testified during legislative hearings that hackers took voters’ names, addresses, birth dates and, in some cases, their driver’s license numbers and the last four digits of their Social Security numbers.

“Gov. Rauner needs to learn from the lessons of the past. It’s his duty to ensure Illinois’ residents have faith in our state’s electoral process,” Cullerton said. “Once again, Gov. Rauner is not willing to consider commonsense solutions to protect Illinois’ citizens.”

Elmhurst LWV returns from national convention

The League of Women Voters of Elmhurst was represented by local president Sue Whitworth at the League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) 53rd National Convention held June 28–July 1 in Chicago. Local vice president Jan Dorner served as a delegate of the state board.

The Convention was hosted by the Leagues of Women Voters of Illinois and Chicago. The event kicked off a two-year celebration of the coming 100th Anniversary in 2020 of women gaining suffrage and the establishment of the League of Women Voters.

Founded in Chicago in 1920, the League of Women Voters is active

in all 50 states with more than 750 chapters across the country. More than 1,000 League leaders from 49 states and the District of Columbia attended leadership workshops and heard from guest speakers about League priorities.

“We all want to see a League of Women Voters that’s suited to meet 21st-century demands, that works hard to court a new generation of leaders and activists, that looks like the people and communities for whom we so fervently advocate,” said Chris Carson, LWVUS president in her opening remarks to the Convention delegates and attendees.

A Conversation on Redistricting where attendees heard from Ruth Greenwood and Nick Stephanopoulos. Greenwood served on the legal team for the plaintiffs in the United States Supreme Court case Gill v.

Over the four-day Convention, delegates voted on the priorities that the national organization should focus on for the next biennium.

The Campaign for Making Democracy Work® includes ensuring a free, fair, and accessible electoral system for all eligible voters by focusing on Voting Rights, Improving Elections, and advocacy for the

National Popular Vote Compact, Campaign Finance/Money in Politics, and Redistricting.

The League will prioritize legal arguments or defenses necessary to ensure ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which after Illinois’ successful ratification this spring, requires only one more state.

Conference attendees also heard from Elaine Weiss, author of The Women’s Hour, at a banquet where Leagues were honored for their various works. The League of Women Voters of Naperville was awarded the Empowering Voters, Defending Democracy Award in the Community Connection category. The

award recognized the “Stroll to the Polls” project, which the League spearheaded with Waubonsie Valley and Metea Valley high schools in Aurora. Voter turnout in targeted precincts doubled thanks to their efforts.

“More than 1,000 members . . . brought their passion for issue involving voting rights, the environment, healthcare, statehood for the District of Columbia, redistricting, and a push to abolish the Electoral College process,” said Whitworth.

“We were reminded that 37 states have ratified the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA); one more is needed for it to be added to the U.S. Constitution. The fight continues.”

School board capsules Here’s what’s going on at District 205

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a meeting on July 17 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven board members attended the meeting, which lasted more than three hours.

Kern honored The board recognized Charlie Kern Jr., a standout cross country and track athlete who graduated from York High School this year. In May, Kern ran to a second-place finish in the 800-meter run at the IHSA Class 3A boys track and field state meet at Eastern Illinois University. Kern will be a member of the track and cross country teams at the University of Missouri, where he received a scholarship.

Presentation on learning, teaching priorities The meeting included a presentation from Mark Cohen, the district’s assistant superintendent of innovation and growth, about the district’s student achievement objectives during the 2017-18 school year and learning and teaching priorities for the upcoming 2018-19 year.

In discussing the objectives for the recently concluded school year, Cohen referred to student engagement and noted that district implemented its third year of students in grades 3-12 using Chromebooks. Students in kindergarten and first grade used iPads, during the 2017-18 school year, while second-graders utilized touchscreen Chromebooks.

Cohen referred to Canadian author

and educational consultant Michael Fullan, who visited District 205 last year. Fullan has written and lectured about what he describes as the “Six Cs”—skills that all students should have to be ready for life beyond school. Those six skills, according to Fullan, are collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, citizenship, character and communication.

In his presentation, Cohen said he wanted to give the board a mental exercise. He then mentioned the district’s students who are starting kindergarten this year. He said that, assuming a retirement age of 67, which is what he stated as the age a teacher who started his or her career today would expect to retire at, those kindergartners will retire in the year 2070.

Cohen, who referenced vision strategies, learning and teaching priorities, technology and the future job landscape for children who start kindergarten this year, repeatedly referred to the year 2070, which is 52 years away. He apparently miscalculated and meant to refer to the year 2080. Cohen also mentioned how different the educational landscape was 62 years ago; in that instance, he correctly calculated the appropriate year of 1956.

Board member Jim Collins noted that more than 90 percent of the district’s students who participated in acceleration took part of enrichment programs instead of receiving additional support.

New data warehouse, assessment system approved for $64,500 Board members voted unanimously during the meeting to approve the adoption of Edis as the district’s new data warehouse and assessment system at a cost of $64,500 for the 201819 school year. District Superintendent David Moyer said the district’s current data warehouse system has been frustrating to use, and has not allowed district staff to maximize its use of data. Implementing Edis will eventually replace two systems by the 2019-20 school year. The consolidation will reportedly save about $33,500 per year by the district’s 2020 fiscal year.

Expenditures approved The board also voted unanimously to accept up to $80,000 from the District 205 Foundation for the purchase of two manual lathes and two manual mills for the York High School Manufacturing Lab. The board voted unanimously to approve a resolution authorizing and providing for the issue of about $2.9 million in refunding debt certificates.

The district is refunding its 2008 debt certificates.

Discussion of ‘acceleration’ program Nikki Tammaru, the district’s director of literacy, spoke to the board about the district’s implementation of a new program called “acceleration” in its elementary and middle schools during the 2017-18 school year. The acceleration period is a 30-minute session offered every school day.

imously to accept a donation of about $10,000 worth of school supplies from a new charitable organization—Enchanted Backpack. The supplies were donated to Conrad Fischer School in June. The donation included basic school supplies, as well as coats, gloves, hats, books, games and recess equipment.

All-day kindergarten talks continue Moyer discussed the possible costs of implementing all-day kindergarten in the district, which currently offers half-day kindergarten. In a July 7 letter to the board, Moyer outlined his projections for the cost of all-day kindergarten.

Those projections for the 2022-23 school year indicated the total cost increase of offering all-day kindergarten at approximately $1 million.

If the district were to charge no fees for all-day kindergarten, Moyer stated it would have to find that total of about $1 million to cover the cost of the program. If the district were to charge tuition for all-day kindergarten, a break-even charge per student would be about $2,200 to $2,500. The projections indicated a total of 586 kindergarten students in the district’s schools, with between 440 to 510 taking part in all-day kindergarten.

Moyer said he and district staff did not believe building one kindergarten center for the entire district would be a good idea. He also said that the district could start a pilot program of all-day kindergarten at some schools, but that several parents would not appreciate the program being offered at some schools but not others.

The consideration of offering all-day kindergarten, and whether or not to charge tuition for it, is a component in the board’s consideration of potentially asking district voters to approve a referendum to borrow money to pay for renovation and construction of the district’s schools. The costliest option for renovation and construction

calls for about $168.5 million in spending to pay for various improvements, including complete rebuilds of Field Elementary School and Lincoln Elementary School.

Referendum deadline is Aug. 20; may wait until 2020 If the board wants to put a referendum question on the ballot in the November 2018 election, it would have to draft a resolution question and adopt a resolution no later than Aug. 20. If the board doesn’t put a question on the ballot in the election of November 2018, its consultants have advised it not to seek a referendum until at least 2020.

Board member Chris Blum noted during the July 17 meeting that the board would discuss the potential of offering all-day kindergarten, and how to pay for it, at a special meeting on Aug. 8. Blum said he did not want to put a referendum question on the ballot if the board did not have an operating model for all-day kindergarten. Blum added that he could not vote for something that would leave a million-dollar hole for a future school board. Board member Jim Collins said the board could propose two separate referendum questions— one for facilities and another for operating funds.

Staff person who attended summit in Berlin recognized Near the end of the meeting, Moyer noted that he and Mary Henderson-Baum, the district’s assistant superintendent for learning and teaching, recently returned from a trip to Finland and Germany. Moyer and Henderson-Baum joined other American educators to study the Finnish education system. They also attended the Global Leadership Summit in Berlin, Germany.

The board held a special meeting on July 25 before the other special meeting on Aug. 8. The board’s next regular meeting will take place on Aug. 14.

Cool Cars Under the Stars returns

First night draws a crowd; more dates planned in August, September

It was a beautiful evening, albeit fairly hot, on Thursday, July 12 when about 75-80 people were in and out of the lot and the facility at the Elmhurst American Legion Post #187 to celebrate the return of Cool Cars Under the Stars.

The Independent received the news of the event’s return from Seventh Ward Alderman Mark Mulliner.

“Cool Cars has fallen by the wayside because we couldn’t get support to keep it in the downtown area,” Mulliner told the Independent in an exclusive interview. “The storeowners downtown don’t particularly like the event, so we were trying to find another place to put it where they would really appreciate it. The American Legion really liked the idea because it will help draw people inside and it’s a good way to communicate, to get the word about their upcoming events and all the good things they have to offer.”

Because it was the first Cool Cars event at the Legion, the evening began with a ceremony with a Color Guard. After the show opened, those who displayed their vehicles had a good time showing off their machines to the many guests who strolled among the cars before stopping inside for a hot dog or a bratwurst and a cold beer. Inside, there were people selling “Split-The-Pot” raffle chances and the loudspeaker offered announcements about coming events including the Legion’s Friday Night Fish Fry. The Legion offered a special thank you to its neighbors, Community Bank of Elmhurst and Elmhurst Orthopaedics, which allowed the use of their parking lots.

The American Legion held a Color Guard ceremony prior to the opening of Cool Cars Under the Stars, which began at the Legion on Thursday, July 12. At this time, there are five other dates planned for a Cool Cars event.

These car owners took a little break for some food at the Elmhurst American Legion, where they displayed their vehicles at Cool Cars Under the Stars. The Legion offered food specials for just $5, which will be the case at all future Cool Cars dates.

These young girls checked out one of the vehicles on display at Cool Cars Under the Stars on Thursday, July 12 at the Elmhurst American Legion. Beautiful weather drew about 100 people to the event throughout the evening.

Team 10K Relay held to benefit the Joe Newton Scholarship

It comes as no surprise a race has already been held in memory of the late Joe Newton, York High School’s larger-than-life cross country coach, who went on to be an Olympic coach and national legend in his field.

The race, called the “Naperville 10K Relay benefitting the Joe Newton Scholarship Award of Excellence,” was held on Sunday, July 15 at the North Central College stadium in Naperville. The race director is Daniel Dziubski, who ran for Mr. Newton from 1998-2001.

“We had more than 140 runners come out to race,” Dziubski told the Elmhurst Independent. “We race two separate heats, an Elite/High heat at 8 a.m. The High School field included teams from the high schools of Hinsdale Central, Seneca, Elmwood Park, Plainfield South, Taft, Jones College Prep, Herscher, and Downers Grove South.”

Among many notable Elite Runners to participate were: Sub 4-minute miler at Brown University Martin Martinez; 2017 All-State miler Zach McEneaney; York alumni and Elmhurst College head cross country coach James Akita; York alumni and Nike Fleet Feet Elite runner Lionel Montenegro; and, 4:09 miler and three-time All-American at North Central Zach Hird.

Elmhurst Tang Soo Do shines at World Championships The World Tang Soo Do Association, which has nearly 200,000 members in 36 countries, held its Bi-Annual World Championship, over the weekend of July 13-14. The 2018 World Championships had more than 1700 competitors from 25 countries.

Elmhurst Tang Soo Do, located at Courts Plus, competed at the event for the 10th time with excellent results. The 32 competitors from Elmhurst Tang Soo Do brought home six Gold medals, eight Silver medals, 14 Bronze medals, and placed 4th in the Team Creativity competition.

Individual awards were: Conor Campbell competed in U13 1st Degree Black Belt Division, where he took a Silver Medal in Sparring.

Michael Schafer in the U14 1st Degree Black Belt Division earned a Bronze Medal in Forms, Weapons & Sparring.

Rachel Misurac, who is an Adult Red Belt, took a Bronze Medal in Sparring.

Adult Blue Belt Isaac Wisinski also earned a Bronze Medal in Sparring.

James Fox, an Adult Green Belt, took a Silver Medal in Forms, Bronze in Sparring.

G-PAC endorses Nybo for his efforts to keep communities safe The Illinois Gun Violence Prevention Political Action Committee (G-PAC) and Giffords have endorsed incumbent Republican Illinois Senator Chris Nybo (24th District) in the November general election for his bipartisan leadership in advancing legislation to keep our children and communities safe from gun violence.

Sen. Nybo has also been awarded the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate Distinction.

Lace up your skates for History Museum’s Family Skate Night The Elmhurst History Museum invites everyone to celebrate the last days of summer and roll back to school in style with a fun Family Skate Night on Thursday, Aug. 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This special evening takes place at the Lombard Roller Rink, located at 2011 W. 22nd St. in Lombard, and the entire rink will be reserved for this private event.

The Family Skate Night will include open skate for all ages with lively music provided by Lombard Rink’s state-of-the art sound system.

The cost is $4 for members of the El-

mhurst Heritage Foundation and $5 for non-members. Skate rentals are available for $4.

In addition to skating, members of the Chicago Bruiser Roller Derby team, who compete at the Lombard Roller Rink, will be on hand to meet guests.

Waivers are required of all skaters and must be signed before participation.

Yesfest returns to Elmhurst area Three days of music, comedy, art, poetry, storytelling coming July 27-29

Six years ago, a group of self-described “stir-crazy” performers wished they had a festival in Elmhurst where they could perform all the things they loved: original music, comedy, improv, and poetry.

“Yesfest is all about creating more spaces for people to do what they love to do,” said Clark Pavlik, co-founder of the festival.

“Whether it’s music, comedy, art, poetry, or storytelling, artists want to ultimately share their art with others,” he says. “Live performances connect an artist with their audience in the best way possible.”

Yesfest had humble beginnings: first in a park, the next year in a garage. Now in its sixth year, Yesfest has grown into a three-day festival featuring more than 75 acts on five different stages at three venues. Scheduled performers come from Elmhurst, Chicago, surrounding suburbs, and Milwaukee. The event is co-presented with the Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst Brew-

Sixth Annual Elmhurst Cycling Classic opens Friday

It’s time for the Sixth Annual Elmhurst Cycling Classic, which will take place Friday, July 27 throughout the Elmhurst College and Wilder Park neighborhoods.

This year’s premier sponsors are Superior Ambulance along with the law firm of Storino, Ramello & Durkin, Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd. and Edward Elmhurst Healthcare.

It’s a sight to behold, watching professional racers zip around a course that lies in the Collegeview section of Elmhurst and if you’ve never attended, it’s an exciting place to be at any time throughout the race, which continues into the evening.

Community race Much as the best part of the race may be to simply be a spectator, families won’t want to miss the Family Fun Bike Ride, which allows residents and neighbors to bring out your own bikes and ride this professional course on your own.

Presented by the Elmhurst Park District, families with all ages are invited to take a fun bike ride around the professional course of the Elmhurst Cycling Classic bike race.

You can choose to decorate yourself or decorate your bike. There will be prizes passed out on-the-spot for best-themed riders at the finish line, and all riders will be cheered on by the crowds as they ride the 1.2 mile course around Elmhurst College.

The race starts at 6:20 p.m., right before the professional women’s race and professional men’s race. Day-of registration is $5 per rider.

All riders must have a signed waiver and helmet in order to ride. All pre-registered riders will be entered into a raffle to win!

Check-in and day-of registration will take place at the Wilder Mansion north parking lot between 3 and 6 p.m.

Staging for the family fun ride is in the cul-de-sac in front of the EPD Rec Building. Be ready to roll at 6:10!

Free bike valet available The Elmhurst Bicycle Club will be hosting a free Bike Valet inside the fenced tennis courts in Wilder Park. Spectators are urged to leave the car at home and ride your bike(s) to the race.

Exciting news is coming to Elmhurst for ninja warriors of all ages!

Windy City Ninjas has announced the grand opening of its new gym location opening in Elmhurst on Friday, July 27. This brand new facility will feature a variety of obstacles to challenge ninjas of all ages (from age 2 to adult). Located at 684 W. Lake St. in Elmhurst, Windy City Ninjas Elmhurst joins the thriving Chicago location, which has been open since February 2017.

Besides cricket, another sport lauded the world over, yet not as popular in the USA is…. Lawn bowling. (What? You thought I was going to say futbol/soccer?) But yes, I jest. Lawn Bowling is indeed played in some parts of the United States. The sport hails from merry olde England so it makes sense that it would show up here.

We recently saw a Lawn Bowling park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

If I lived there, I think I would play. It seems about my speed and ability level. Except for the fact I don’t know anything about it. I thought it was perhaps like the Italian game bocce, or the French version, boules. Maybe so, but I just read that “Particularly in team competition there can be a large number of bowls on the green towards the conclusion of the end, and this gives rise to complex tactics.”

Complex tactics? No thanks.

But what about the size of the balls? “Lawn Bowls are available in different sizes with a mid-sized men’s bowl being between 116mm and 131mm in diameter. They are made of a hard plastic material which is able to withstand the constant contact between bowls during play. Their weight should not exceed 1.59kg.” Got it.

And now I know it’s a contact sport. I’m definitely not joining that club.

Lawn bowls is played on what is called the bowling green, a closely-mown level field of grass. Many states have a town called Bowling Green. We’ll be near Bowling Green, Kentucky this fall on a road trip. We’ll have to add a stop there to see if they actually have a bowling green.

The green reminds me of croquet and my curiosity drifts to wonder about the size of croquet balls, which we did have when I was a kid. Google says they are “3 5/8 inches (92 mm) in diameter, and weigh one pound (454 g).” Okay, so croquet ball is smaller than lawn bowl. Croquet ball vs Cricket ball? I cannot find a definitive answer. Dang internet. Where’s Ask Jeeves when I need him?

If you google “how many sports involve a ball,” you will get many answers and many forums. One post said, “4 that I know of.

Basketball, Football, Soccer, Rugby and I am sure many more.”

Oh, Brahm, how could you forget cricket balls?

Aleksander replied, “The correct answer is hundreds, maybe thousands.” Now that’s more like it. This give meteorologists many options to compare the size of hail. But maybe hundreds or thousands is too many.

Why not use fruit? That would make it easier for my brain. “Hail the size of grapes. Or raisins. Or kiwis.” If I hear hail is the size of strawberries or lemons or oranges, I will have a frame of reference.

Hail the size of cantaloupe – now that would be newsworthy! Even a small cantaloupe is large for hail.

Can you imagine hail the size of watermelons? It probably has happened somewhere. Newscasters may have likened it to the size of a large rugby ball which I immediately, if not entirely correctly, would approximate a football, an American brown leather pointy football. Even not knowing rugby, I do know it’s a sport. Why I didn’t think that of cricket balls, I will never know.

The official hail size chart (they exist) starts with pea and goes up to softball, and some include hen egg and tea cup. But none of these charts, none, mention cricket balls. I rest my case.

During a “Yes, You Can: Preserving Food Safely” session, you will learn the basics of food preservation, receive up-to-date food safety guidelines, understand the latest scientific methods, pick up recipes and ideas and can have your pressure canner gauge tested.

In DuPage County, the event will be held on Aug. 16 from 1-4 p.m. at the Extension Office, 1100 E. Warrenville Road, Naperville.

American Legion U19 squad concludes season Post 187 drops a pair to Elgin in 11th District tournament

The Elmhurst American Legion U19 baseball team wrapped up summer play with a pair of games in the American Legion 11th District tournament held at the Carol Stream American Legion Post 76 Baseball Stadium.

The Muddogs opened the tournament with a tough 1-0 loss in nine innings to Elgin Post 57. Rules were changed this season to make district and division American Legion playoff baseball games seven innings in length as opposed to nine.

Elmhurst’s Brendan Russ was the hard-luck loser. He allowed seven hits and no earned runs while striking out five and walking none. Of his 95 pitches, 68 went for strikes and he threw a first-pitch strike to 23 of the 30 batters he faced.

“Brendan pitched outstanding,” said Post 187 manager Mike Biondo.

“He brought it the whole game. It probably was his best performance.

We didn’t bring our bats. It was their best pitcher against ours and it was going to be who would come up with the big hit and unfortunately it ended up being Elgin.”

The Muddogs were held to two hits. Joe Orrico and Vince Bilotti each had a double.

Elgin had a batter reach on an error and the subsequent batter doubled in the winning run.

Post 187 faced Elgin once again in the consolation bracket and lost 11-1 and was eliminated from the playoffs.

Elgin led 3-0 after two innings and 6-0 after three innings before blowing the game open with five runs in the fourth inning.

Post 187 was limited to three hits and made four errors. Bryan Larsen had two hits and an RBI, while Russ had a hit and a run scored. One of Larsen’s hits went for a double. Jordan Vogel took the loss. Only five of Elgin’s 11 runs were earned.

The Muddogs finished the season with a 7-7 mark.

“The first game was a very wellpitched game,” said Biondo. “The second game we weren’t in it from the start. We were flat. I think Elgin had some momentum from walking off on us in the first game and that took the wind of our sails and it was the end of our season.”

York summer baseball team splits pair of playoff games Thomas hits game-winning single against Oak Park-River Forest

The York summer baseball team wrapped up its season with a pair of playoff games in the Phil Lawler Summer Classic hosted by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association.

York opened regional play with a 3-2 win over West Suburban Conference Silver Division foe Oak Park-River Forest and then dropped a 14-9 game to Nazareth Academy to conclude summer play.

In the Oak Park-River Forest win, Kellen Gilmartin pitched the first 5 1/3 innings and John Milling went the final 1 2/3 innings on the mound.

“We were up 2-0 going into the fifth and then they came back and scored two to tie it,” said York coach Dave Kalal.

York won the game in the bottom

of the seventh with a single run.

Joe Goehl hit a one-out triple. Oak Park-River Forest then intentionally walked both Ian Steinorth and Ryan Ross to load the bases, which set the table for Bo Thomas, who singled up the middle past a drawn-in infield to win it.

“It was a good way to win,” said Kalal. “It was a well-played game for a high-school summer-league game. It was a clean game defensively. It was a good win for us. It was one of those games in the summer where the younger guys got to see playing time in an intense varsity game with a conference rival.”

York led 3-0 at one point against Nazareth Academy. “It was back and forth,” said Kalal. “It was one of those games where if you were the last one to score you were going to win the game. Our pitching strug-

gled a little bit. We threw four or five guys and couldn’t find anybody to shut it down for more than a couple outs in an inning. The good thing is our young arms got some good experience in a competitive situation. We had some good momentum going into the game after beating Oak Park like that. We played well enough to win against Nazareth, but we came up a little short.”

Kalal liked what he saw during the summer season. “Across the diamond and up and down the lineup, we should have another good spring in 2019,” he said. “We have some good things to look forward to. We also have some things we have to work on and we figured that out this summer. That’s what the summer is all about.

“We were able to see a lot of guys play and we saw a lot of guys play

in different situations at different positions they don’t normally play.

We have some positions to fill from the guys who graduated this past spring. As a staff, we feel we have a lot to look forward to and to work with going into next spring. It was a good summer. The kids had good attitudes. They played the game hard and listened and they were coachable. It’s a big jump up from the lower levels to varsity baseball, especially during the spring season where the quality of play and quality of pitching is much different than the summer.”

York finished the summer with a 12-12 record.

“A .500 record, that to me and the coaching staff is a successful summer because of how many guys were going in and out of the lineup on a daily basis,” said Kalal.

Junior American Legion team fares well in division tournament Muddogs win first two games against Wheaton and Steger

The Elmhurst Junior American Legion baseball team got off to a strong start in the Junior 2nd Division South playoffs last week.

The Muddogs opened 2nd Division South play in Morris with a 10-9 win against Wheaton Post 76 in a game played at Shabonna School in Morris.

Elmhurst found itself trailing 9-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning and proceeded to score seven runs in the frame to win it and advance to the next round of the tournament.

In the bottom of the seventh, Elmhurst started the inning by taking a called third strike for the first out.

Jack Schiltz then singled before Nathan Kriz’s ground out advanced

Schiltz to second base with two outs.

That’s when things heated up for Post 187.

Schiltz advanced to third on a wild pitch and Andrew Pietrucha walked to put runners at first and third. Michael Hilgart also walked to load the bases. Nick DeSimone continued the walk progression by drawing a free pass and driving in Schiltz to cut the lead to 9-4.

Tyler Gelsomino also walked, forcing in Pietrucha. Alexis Cotto then singled, scoring Hilgart to make it 9-6.

The game became tied when Jose Alvarez singled to right, scoring Gelsomino and Cotto. DeSimone also scored a run on an error.

Elmhurst won the game when the Wheaton pitcher balked in Alvarez.

“Everything we needed to happen right happened right,” said Post 187 manager Mike Biondo. “We kept fighting and we kept coming back. It was back and forth. We played very well at the end.”

Elmhurst had eight hits in the game. Gelsomino went 1-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Cotto was 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI. Alvarez was 3-for4 with a run scored and two RBI. Alanzo Howard was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Schiltz was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Hilgart scored two runs and drew four walks. Elmhurst drew 10 walks in the contest. Cotto had a double and also stole a base.

Gelsomino was the winning pitcher in relief. Hilgart and Pietrucha also pitched in the game, which featured a combined 19 runs, 19 hits and seven errors by the two teams.

Elmhurst then recorded a 9-5 win over Steger Post 521.

Post 187 led 3-2 after three innings, trailed 5-3 after 3 1/2 innings and led 8-5 thanks to a five-run fourth inning.

The Muddogs had nine hits in the game and overcame five error sin the field.

Gelsomino went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Cotto was

2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Alvarez had two RBI and a run scored. Schiltz went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jack Ryan walked three times.

Kriz was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Pietrucha went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while DeSimone had a hit and two runs scored. Elmhurst drew eight walks. Gelsomino stole two bases.

Gelsomino was the winning pitcher. He went six innings and struck out three, while allowing only four hits and one earned run. Massimo Cortez pitched a scoreless and hitless seventh inning.

Post 187 then lost an 11-10 contest to Morris Post 294. Morris won the game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in a game that featured a combined 22 hits and five errors.

Elmhurst led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth before Morris scored six runs in the bottom of the frame.

Gelsomino went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Cotto went

2-for-5 with two RBI. Alvarez had a hit and two runs scored. Howard had a hit and a run scored. Schiltz had a hit, two runs scored, two RBI and drew four walks. Ryan drew two walks and scored a run. Pietrucha had two hits, two RBI and a run scored. Hilgart had a hit, a run scored and two walks. Cortez had a hit, a run scored, two RBI and one walk. Again, Elmhurst was the beneficiary of 12 walks.

Alvarez, Cotto and Howard each had one double. Cotto took the loss in relief.

“The 17U team has been playing well,” said Biondo. “They are clicking.”

The loss to Morris put Post 187 into the consolation bracket against Wheaton Post 76. If Elmhurst won that game, it would have to beat Morris twice to win the 2nd Division South title and get a shot at 2nd Division North champion Barrington sometime this week for a chance to play in the Illinois junior state American Legion tournament.

American Legion baseball program to start 15U team in 2019

American Legion Post 187 program director Mike Biondo recently announced the program will be expanding to a third team in 2019.

Post 187 will field a new Super Junior American Legion baseball tournament team in 2019.

To play for the 15U team for the summer 2019 season, players must be 15 years of age or younger before Dec. 31, 2019. Players can be no younger than 13 years of age.

The cost to play is $900. That fee includes top-level competition, playing time, team insurance, field use, equipment, umpires, full-but-

Biondo has been pleased with the traction the Muddogs program has gained in short order. “We are going in the right direction,” he said.

“We’ve added a team here every year. We’re bringing in kids and teaching them the right way and getting them ready for next year. That’s our objective. We want to make kids better and if a younger kid belongs at a higher level, let’s move him up to that 18-19 team and see what they can do.”

Biondo also noted the general lack of knowledge about one of the game’s hidden gems: free Major League Baseball open tryouts. Biondo noted several teams still hold these open tryouts, including the

Biondo said the competition level at the senior American Legion level lived up to its billing. “We had five players who are playing in college,” he said. “I thought we would do a lot better, but that shows you with American Legion baseball that you never know. Younger guys who are 18 and are playing with 19-year-olds in college, they are there to compete as well. Just because you have college players doesn’t always mean you are going to win. It’s more about the determination of the team as a whole. We saw some good teams this summer.”

Biondo said his goal is to continue to grow the program and spread awareness of the benefits of American Legion baseball. Post 187 added a 17U Junior Legion team this season and also has its long-standing 19U team.

“I want to get American Legion baseball in the eyes of a lot of people who don’t know about it,” he said. “I have people all the time tell me they have no idea what it is. American Legion baseball has been around for 92 years. It’s been around a long time and has such a great tradition. If you are at the 19U level, the World Series is on ESPN. If you are on a team that makes it to the state tournament, they pay for your meals and hotel. If you make it to the regional level they pay for your airfare as well. If you get the World Series, you get all those benefits and they give out awards and scholarships. It’s amazing what American Legion baseball does, but a lot of people know nothing about it. The benefits of American Legion baseball need to be pushed out there more. The more I push it, the better off I am.”

FPDDC among ‘100 Best Fleets’

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County was recognized for the seventh year in a row as one of the “100 Best Fleets in the Americas” and for the fifth year in a row as one of Government Fleet magazine’s top 50 fleets in the nation.

The district remained the only conservation agency to make Government Fleet’s top 50 list, which recognizes operations that perform at high levels, particularly in fleet leadership, competitiveness and efficiency, planning and problem solving.

The program recognizes “peak performing fleet operations in North America,” according to 100bestfleets.com. Technology, performance, collaboration, service turn-

around time and accountability are all criteria for the award.

Both programs honors top public-sector fleets among more than 30,000 at the municipal, county, state and federal levels. A detailed ranking of the winners was revealed at the Government Fleet Expo and Conference June 4-7, in San Diego, Calif.

“This award really highlights our district fleet staff. We are so proud to be consistently ranked among the best in the nation,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore. “It is a great honor and a testament to their hard work and progressive thinking.”

District fleet manager Michael Webster said the fleet is distinct in its

County latex paint recycling program under way DuPage County is hosting a Latex Paint Recycling Program at the County’s Woodridge Greene Valley Wastewater Treatment Facility.

Residents can drop off their usable, unwanted latex paint during designated summer collections free of charge. The county will accept latex-based paint that has not been frozen, is less than 10 years old and has not been mixed with other products. The paint will be filtered and re-blended into a variety of colors, types and finishes.

The recycled paint will then be offered free to residents, businesses and non-profit organizations in five-gallon containers. While commercial entities can pick up the recycled paint, drop-off is limited to residents. Paint from businesses, contractors or commercial entities will not be accepted.

“The yearly latex paint recycling event is one of our most popular and successful. DuPage County is pleased to offer this option to resi-

dents as an environmentally-safe and responsible way to recycle unwanted, but usable latex paint. And the recycled, redistributed paint benefits our friends and neighbors in the community who can truly use it,” said DuPage County Board Environmental Committee Chairwoman Amy Grant.

Homeowners can drop off their unwanted latex paint at the Woodridge Greene Valley Wastewater Treatment Facility, 7900 S. Route 53 in Woodridge, Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. through Aug. 4.

Since the start of the program in 2001, the county has collected more than 92,000 gallons of paint and distributed roughly 49,000 gallons of recycled paint. The program has served more than 16,000 residents.

Archery open house showcases popular sport Explore the classic sport of archery at a free “Archery Open House” on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville.

Participants will learn about this popular sport and its history and equipment before trying out their skills under the guidance of a certified instructor. The open house will highlight the archery range’s three different sections: beginner, advanced and interactive. Visitors will also be able to talk to representatives from local archery groups at the event.

All ages are welcome at the open house, but adults must accompany those under 18. Equipment is provid-

ed, and registration is not required.

The Blackwell archery range, which is located off the Butterfield Road entrance, is open from one hour after sunrise until sunset, except on Wednesdays, when it opens at 10 a.m. after routine maintenance.

Visitors using the area do not need permits, but the range is for archery use only. Archers may use arrows with target heads but not broad heads.

Outside of the open house, archers need to bring their own equipment.

The archery range is ADA accessible and features bow racks, quivers and targets with distances up to 90 meters.

Theatre troupe takes Elmhurst play to one-act festival Earns three awards at St. Mary’s College in Maryland

The play is about five middle-aged women, all cousins, who come to a regularly scheduled book club meeting, but never discuss the book. Instead, they face issues of aging with wit, wisdom and a little too much wine.

“Initial rehearsals started at Elmhurst College,” Motto said. “It was both nerve-wracking and great fun to watch it come together during the last five months until it was performed successfully on stage in Maryland.”

Another one-act play written by Motto, titled Best Friends’ Rule, recently won third place in playwriting in September. More than 105 plays from all over the U.S. and outside the country were entered in the contest this year.

Elmhurst was well-represented at the recent Watermelon One-Act Festival hosted by St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

A one-act play, The Cousins’ Book Club, written by long-time Elmhurst resident Patricia Motto, captured three awards against 16 other plays from across the U.S. Two Elmhurst College faculty members played key roles in the production.

Frank Del Guidice directed the play and cast the actresses, while Rick Arnold organized lighting and technical matters.
