School Board moves forward on referendum borrowing Lower interest rates make timing good for purchase of G.O. bonds

At their meeting held on July 16, District 205 Board members voted unanimously to approve a resolution providing for the issue of up to $60 million in general obligation (G.O.) school bonds. The issue is related to the passage of the referendum in the election of Nov. 6, 2018. Voters in that election approved a proposition to borrow $168.5 million to pay for renovations and additions to district facilities.

Collins stated that following the approval of the referendum, the Board could have approved a bond sale of $25 million in January 2019. The board at that time decided to use funds from its fund balance to pay expenses related to the approved referendum, and reimburse the fund balance at a later date. “generational lows.”

Financial advisor offers overview Elizabeth Hennessy, managing director of Raymond James, spoke at both the July 11 special meeting and at the July 16 regular meeting.

A financial advisor to the district, Hennessy said on July 11 that the district was in a great environment to issue bonds. She said the district

could lock in low interest rates if it chose to issue bonds. She noted that the maximum bond issue the district could currently issue is $60 million.

Hennessy also noted that the district is currently paying off existing debt from previous bond issues unrelated to the November 2018 referendum.

Leading up to last year’s referendum, the district informed residents that its passage would add an average of about $150 to the annual

property taxes of a district homeowner of a home with a market value of $500,000. Hennessy said that since then, the district’s tax base has grown, causing that projected figure of $150 to drop to about $138.

The 7th Annual Superior Ambulance Elmhurst Cycling Classic is coming to town on Friday, July 26, bringing amateur and professional bike racers from around the country and the world to compete on a 1.2mile circuit surrounding Elmhurst College. Starting and ending at the Wilder Mansion, the competition will feature some racers who will compete at speeds in excess of 30 mph. Race day will run from about 9:45 a.m. until 7 p.m. There will be no night race this year.

Lifelong resident Elsie Shumway turns 100 Honored as Willows names a room after her

A lifelong resident of Elmhurst recently reached a major milestone.

Elsie Shumway, a long-time resident of the Willows Condominium Association, celebrated her centennial birthday at a party held in her honor at the Willows on Sunday, June 16. Almost 100 family, friends and fellow residents attended the festivities, which ended with the presentation of a special honor.

Jay Ricke, president of the Board of the Willows Assn., presented Elsie with a plaque denoting that the Board had approved a motion to name their meeting hall the “Elsie Shumway Meeting Room” in appreciation of her many years of dedicated service to the residents and in honor of her 100th birthday. The plaque will be placed in a prominent location to be seen by all who use the meeting room.

Her secret to long life? No idea!

Those who have met and had the pleasure of talking with Elsie Shumway believe they may know the secret to her long life, even though she’s not sure herself. She seems to be a relaxed woman who doesn’t let things bother her and never has. That could be her secret right there.

“People often ask my secret to a long life and quite frankly, I have no idea whatsoever why I lived so long,” she told The Independent in an exclusive interview. “You’d think it was from living an exemplary life, but I certainly did not! I lived during a period when everybody smoked and everybody drank, we were German so we ate a diet full of butter and cream and all the things they tell you you’re not supposed to have. But back then, that’s just how everyone lived.”

A different world, an innocent place “When I was a child the world was an innocent place,” Elsie recalled.

“When I was only one year old, I had [contracted] polio. There were a lot of things back then -- diphtheria, scarlet fever -- but you just didn’t go to hospitals back then, people were quarantined in their homes. In the early 1950s, when

ELDRED ELLIS DENNY, 89 Known to many as “Denny,” Eldred Ellis Denny died peacefully at his home in Elmhurst on July 9, 2019, after living life to the fullest for 89 years. He was a “God, country and family” kind of guy, known for his generous heart, great hugs, and hearty laugh. Eldred was a proud member of the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command and served at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz. during the Korean Conflict.

He continued in public service as a police officer, first in Elmhurst and then in Lombard, where he was injured on the job. He went on to serve as deputy assessor in York Township and retired as deputy supervisor of assessments for DuPage County.

Unafraid to indulge his entrepreneurial spirit throughout his life, Eldred operated a painting and decorating business with his longtime friend Jack Eierman and worked independently as a locksmith, private detective, and real estate appraiser/tax consultant. Recre-

There was one family whose youngest two children were sick and couldn’t go in or out, but there were other children in the family who had to live elsewhere.”

She even remembers when Jonas Salk discovered the shot that could keep polio at bay.

“I bugged the doctor so much about letting us know as soon as he had the shot that sure enough, he told us and we were among the first people to come to the office.”

Well, polio or not, Elsie ended up driving a car until she was 92 years old.

She has lived at the Willows now for 34 years.

“Today, it seems like everyone has an oxygen tank, everyone’s always got to have a blood test for something, but there is nothing wrong with my lungs or heart. I have lived longer than anyone in my family, granted I’m the youngest one in my generation, but I didn’t really do anything to keep myself healthy or to live a long life.”

Staying active and working One thing Elsie Shumway did NOT do over the years is slow down – she worked until she was 88.

“I worked full-time until I was 70 and then, I was still working part-time at the age of 88,” she said. “I had ‘retired’ for about six months but was really bored and needed to find something else to do. I was never the type who got all cleaned up and ‘did lunch.’ I wanted to be doing something.”

Recalling life events Elsie and her husband, who passed away many years ago, were married in 1939, two years before the beginning of WWII. She described what it was like when the news of the attack on Pearl Harbor came across the airwaves.

“I remember the night we heard about Pearl Harbor, we were living in our very first apartment and we had invited my in-laws over for Sunday dinner,” she recalled. “I didn’t really know how to cook, so we were cooking din-

He was preceded in death by his father Alexander and mother Dagmar (nee Clausen). He leaves behind his wife of 40 years Marianne Kroeger; children Joyce (Gene) Sexton, Joan Staley, Laura (Gary) Kaczmarek, Kevin (Debbie) Denny, David (Sandy) Denny, and Amy (John) Kremer; former wife and mother of his children Marion Krengel Denny; brother Glenn (Shari) Denny; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; a large network of in-laws, extended family, and friends; and his beloved cats Butch, KoKo, and Reba.

After family, the biggest love of his life was “The Farm” in southern Illinois, which he grew from a personal “hidey hole” to a legacy for future generations. ner together and had started setting the table. We had the radio on and they interrupted with a special announcement.

We didn’t even eat dinner after that.”

That’s just the way life was, she said.

“I grew up during the Depression, and then we went to war,” she said.

“That’s just how life unfolded.”

Her husband worked from home but

then he got sick. Elsie found herself seeking employment so she thought she’d try that big company on the north end of town – Keebler. She worked there for 20 years until she retired.

Elsie didn’t stay retired for long. She worked at the YMCA, then at Plass Appliances, then applied at Re-Max East-West Realty, where she worked as a secretary for 12 years.

“Some of those people were so nice to work with,” she said. “It was like a family.”

Her family…

Elsie has been blessed with a family she is proud of, including Sharon Belletynee, who is an Elmhurst resident and first alerted The Independent to her mother’s milestone birthday. Elsie also has a daughter, Cindy, who lives in Morrison, Ill. She raised them in their Elmhurst home on Hawthorne.

She has four grandchildren – two grandsons and two granddaughters – who are adults now. She also has four great-grandchildren and, as Elsie puts it, “oodles” of step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even one great-great grandchild.

Elsie was delighted with her 100th birthday party held at the Willows.

“I wasn’t sure if anyone would come,” she laughed, “but they had about 92 people. It started out to be from 1-4 p.m., but people showed up and then they just didn’t leave! So it was a big group for a good long time.”

A well-deserved honor for a well-deserved life. Happy 100th Birthday to Elsie Shumway!

EECC hosts veteran pinning event On Wednesday, July 17, Elmhurst Extended Care Center and Kindred Hospice hosted a veteran’s pinning event, during which 15 veterans were presented with certificates and pins commemorating their service to our country. All recipients were residents of EECC except one, who was a volunteer who has served at the facility for more than 20 years.

substantial savings over the life of the total bond issue. According to information provided by the district, issuing $60 million now at the current interest rates with reduce the risk associated with future bond issues planned for 2021 and 2023.

Hennessy reiterated that the district’s outstanding bonds would be paid off in approximately seven years.

The issuance of $60 million in bonds, which could happen as soon as this week (the week of July 22) could potentially accelerate the schedule of projects at the district’s schools.

The bonds will be made available to local investors on a priority basis.

A break for homeowners over life of loan Hennessy said during the July 16 meeting that issuing $60 million in bonds at the current rates, along with other projections, would lead the owner of a home with a market value of $500,000 to pay an annual average of $826 in property taxes toward the district during the next seven years, while the outstanding bonds are also being paid off; that average would drop to $793 in years 8 to 23 over the life of the bonds.

Moments after the board approved the resolution at the July 16 meeting, Collins noted that the approval gives the district the option, but not the obligation to go ahead with the bond issue.

July 12 A 47-year-old woman from Ashtabula, Ohio, was charged with domestic battery near York and Fremont at around 8:48 p.m. A victim reports while at the above location, her sister became upset and reportedly struck her.

The suspect admitted to striking her, according to police.

Spain, 23, of Plainfield, was charged with DUI and leaving the roadway subsequent to a motorist assist for a vehicle in a ditch near Butterfield and Roosevelt at around 4:37 a.m.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass to property July 11 Tyler Murray, 20, of Oak Park, was charged with criminal trespass to property and obstructing a police officer in the 200 block of E. Cayuga at around 2:39 a.m. Police said officers responded to the report of a suspicious subject pulling on car door handles. The reporting officer located Murray, whom police said immediately fled on foot. With assistance of a police K9, Murray was located hiding inside of a garage, according to police.

Disorderly conduct July 12 A juvenile was issued citations for disorderly conduct/obstructing a police officer, no seat belt and a curfew violation subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 12:35 a.m.

Domestic battery, domestic incident July 14 A 55-year-old Elmhurst resident was charged with two counts of domestic battery and unlawful interference with the reporting of domestic violence in the 200 block of E. Columbia at around 6:49 p.m. Police said officers responded for the domestic battery at the above location. Upon arrival, the victim told police she and the suspect had a verbal argument and the suspect allegedly pushed her and grabbed her phone when she attempted to call 911. Police said the suspect admitted to taking her phone to prevent her from calling 911.

July 13 A victim near Park and Elm Tree Lane told police at around 1:42 p.m. that after an argument with her boyfriend, he slapped her and threw a soda at her. The victim hit him back in self-defense, and the suspect then made a suicidal threat, according to police. The area was checked for the suspect with no results. The suspect was entered into LEADS as missing.

Police said officers responded for a fight in progress in the 300 block of W. Lake at around 9:05 p.m. Upon arrival, the victim was located and had visible injuries. The victim stated the father of her child reportedly caused the injuries and fled prior to the reporting officer’s arrival. Charges are pending at this time.

Fleeing, eluding July 12 Police said that subsequent to a sighting of a stolen vehicle out of Chicago near Spring and Vallette at around 1:45 p.m., a reporting officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle fled from the officer at a high rate speed. It was last seen in the area of St. Charles and I-290.

Harassment, threats July 16 A victim in the 900 block of S. Route 83 told police at around 5:18 p.m. that she received a threatening text on her cell phone using profane language. The victim does not know who sent her the message.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, possession of alternative nicotine product July 16 Isaias Lozano-Aguilers, 38, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, disobeying a traffic control device and no valid driver’s license subsequent to a traffic stop in the 100 block of Fairlane at around 8:22 a.m.

July 13 Police said Brandon Morgan, 34, of Glen Ellyn, and Alexandria R. Murillo, 29, of Villa Park, observed in the parking lot of a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 9:19 a.m.

According to police, they were found to be in possession of heroin, hypodermic syringes and other items of drug paraphernalia. Morgan was also wanted on a warrant by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department, police said.

Morgan was charged with possession of controlled substance, possession of hypodermic syringes, possession of drug paraphernalia and obstruction of identification. Murillo was charged with unlawful possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of hypodermic syringes.

July 12 Yenitzy Romo, 19, of Woodridge, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Roosevelt at around 8:20 p.m.

July 11 Jose L. Sanchez, 30, of Villa Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near Villa and Thomas at around 7:46 a.m.

Feb. 2 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Belden and Willow at around 12:19 a.m. an officer detected a strong odor of cannabis coming from inside of a vehicle. According to police, the passenger was found to be in possession of cannabis and a search of the vehicle yielded two Oxycodone Hydrochloride pills on the front passenger seat where the passenger had been sitting. The passenger was issued a citation for no seat belt and was released.

Stanley M. Roberts, 23, of Elmhurst was released without charges pending lab results, according to police. On July 15 at around 9:29 a.m., police said Roberts turned himself in on an arrest warrant. He was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, obstructed view (tinted side windows), no insurance and no seat belt.

Suspicious circumstances July 16 A victim near Route 83 and St. Charles told police at around 6:47 p.m. that her ex-boyfriend was following her in a vehicle as she traveled on Route 83. The suspect was contacted and denied following the victim. The victim was instructed to obtain an order of protection if she felt it was necessary for her safety.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery July 16 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 11:17 a.m. A complainant told police that upon reviewing video surveillance, he observed a suspect place merchandise into a shopping bag and leave the store without paying. The suspect reportedly exited the store, walked across the street to a parking lot, and left the area northbound York in a newer black Chevrolet Impala. The suspect was described as a black male around 30 years old, 5-9 and between 170-200 pounds with a medium build, wearing a black baseball cap, a doo-rag underneath the cap, a horizontal blue and white striped shirt, blue jeans and black shoes.

July 15-July 16 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of N. Addison sometime between the above dates. A victim told police that she parked her unlocked Subaru Forrester overnight. When the victim returned at around 6 a.m. July 16, she found her iPhone, credit card, Illinois driver’s license and sunglasses missing from the center console of the vehicle.

June 10-July 16 Police said the office manager of a business in the 100 block of N. Michigan was out of the office between the above dates. When she returned on July 19, she found the cash lockbox had been stolen.

July 15 Deborah Massel, 49, of Lombard, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 12:24 p.m.

Police said Massel was observed taking merchandise.

July 13-July 15 Commercial burglary was reported at a cemetery in the 500 block of E. Lake. A complainant reported that an unknown suspect(s) had entered two of their garages and removed landscaping tools. One of the garage doors appeared to have been pried open and broken glass was located outside of the door.

July 14 Theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 3:32 p.m. A victim reports while she was in the frozen food aisle, a suspect described as a black male between 45 and 50 years old, around 5’9”, 225 pounds wearing a dark baseball hat, a light shirt, dark shorts and gray gym shoes, distracted her. When the victim reached the cashier lane, she noticed her wallet was missing from her purse. The victim later learned her Visa card was used at Wal-Mart in Villa Park. There also was a second suspect, described as a black female, 37 years old, around 5’6”, 155 pounds, wearing a dark baseball hat, a red-sleeved shirt, white pants and sandals.

July 13 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of E. First at around 6:16 p.m. A victim told police that her Nordstrom® credit card was used in Chicago and Oak Brook for unauthorized charges.

Schiller at around 9:37 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) opened a fraudulent credit card in his name and made several online purchases. The victim was provided information on how to protect himself against identity theft.

July 4 Demetra Charise, 26, of Chicago, was charged with theft in the 300 block of W. Lake at around 1:46 p.m. According to police, a victim told police that Charise, an employee, used a company credit card to purchase gasoline for her personal vehicle. The employee completed several transactions using a company credit card, according to police.

June 11-July 4 Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of Rex Blvd. at around 8:42 p.m. A victim told police that she requested a new debit card from her bank, but never received it. She inquired with her bank and was advised that the debit card was mailed and activated. After checking her account, she discovered fraudulent charges. The victim was provided an identity theft pamphlet and has contacted the credit bureaus.

June 29 A victim in the 600 block of N. Howard told police at around 6:43 p.m. that she attempted to sell a couch on the app “offer up” when a suspect contacted her via email to purchase it.

The suspect sent a check for $1,795.60 instead of the amount she requested, telling her to deposit the check and send the excess to a moving company. The victim deposited the check, sent the excess, and later found the account to be closed.

EWAN extends services to the homebound One of the hallmarks of the Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network (EWAN) has always been the open door that allows people needing assistance to drop in without an appointment. It’s in the name after all.

But for some of the most vulnerable members of the Elmhurst community—seniors and the disabled—navigating the stairs into the EWAN office may put its services out of reach.

With this problem in mind, EWAN is launching a new program that will allow those physically unable to visit the office to call and request a home visit.

Volunteers will then go in teams of two to meet with the homebound individuals, register them with EWAN, and work to get them the assistance needed.

Because seniors and the disabled are often living on fixed incomes, an unexpected expense from a home repair to a hospitalization can quickly throw their budget off. By offering help with utility bills, rent or mortgage payments, or medical expenses, EWAN can help bridge the gap until the person is back on track.

“You frequently hear stories of se-

niors having to choose between filling a prescription, paying a bill, or even purchasing groceries,” said Executive Director Jackie Crnkovich.

“In the spirit of the EWAN mission to help our neighbors in need, we don’t want any Elmhurst senior or disabled person to have to struggle with that kind of choice.”

A request for assistance requires only a phone call to 630-782-6006.

The office is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon (closed on Fridays during the summer). A message can be left during the off-hours and a volunteer will return the call the next business day. The visit will be arranged through mutual agreement between the homebound individual and the home visitors.

“We really hope people will take advantage of the help available to

them through this program,” said Crnkovich.

“EWAN has been operating successfully for over twenty years because Elmhurst residents believe in the notion of neighbors helping neighbors. Our supporters are excited by this new effort because it reaches out to many who have called Elmhurst home for a long time and would truly benefit from a hand up.”

Mazzochi: ‘Kwame caved’ State Representative speaks out against Attorney General’s action to reopen Sterigenics

A standing-room-only crowd showed up for the latest court call in the People of the State of Illinois v.

Sterigenics today. State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) appeared to defend the goals and intent of legislation the General Assembly enacted to combat the adverse effects of ethylene oxide.

Representative Mazzochi spoke at a news conference on the DuPage County courthouse steps opposing the State of Illinois’ proposed consent decree with Sterigenics. The decree would allow the company’s medical device sterilization plant in Willowbrook to reopen without the company admitting any fault; and even though the Illinois EPA ordered the facility closed in February citing excessive emissions of ethylene oxide (EO), which is considered carcinogenic.

“The holes in this consent agreement are big enough for Sterigenics to drive a truck through,” Rep. Mazzochi said. “In the Matt Haller Act we passed this spring, legislators gave the regulators the tools they need to protect communities from unhealthy ethylene oxide emissions.

I am disappointed Attorney General Kwame Raoul caved in to Sterigenics by signing this agreement without first addressing the serious public health and environmental safety that local families require; and with no meaningful notice or input to the stakeholders involved.”

Sterigenics attorneys proposed to the court that once the court entered this consent decree, that would “moot” local municipalities’ efforts to stop Sterigenics pollution and fight nuisance claims. Mazzochi disagreed.

“This fight is not over,” she said.

“The next step is to vigorously oppose the current proposed consent agreement in court.”

The Attorney General’s office withheld the terms of the agreement from state representatives until after it was signed. Rep. Mazzochi, an attorney, pointed to several loopholes that Sterigenics could use to reopen immediately, while avoiding the additional oversight and layers of environmental protection the latest legislation requires, which she declared “unacceptable.” She also reiterated that neither the Attorney General’s Office nor the Illinois EPA have released findings contradicting their original Seal Order claim that Sterigenics posed an environmental and public health threat.

“The Attorney General’s action signals his unwillingness to defend the original Seal Order finding that Sterigenics is an environmental health hazard, and to fight to keep our local residents safe,” she added.

A court hearing on the state’s consent agreement to reopen Sterigenics is scheduled for Wednesday, July 24 at the DuPage County Courthouse.

Rep. Mazzochi intends to file a “friend of the court” brief to discuss the legislative intent that prompted the passage of Senate Bill 1852, known as the Matt Haller Act, to prohibit the renewal of any permits for facilities that violate federal or state standards for ethylene oxide emissions; and which prohibits ethylene oxide use by facilities with egregious violations requiring a seal order.

I’d forgotten what it was like to have a toddler in the house. We recently spent a few grand days with our granddaughter, who is 14 months old. She’s a tiny package but full of content.

What she lacks in size she makes up for in personality. She’s definitely an individual. I remember thinking that was cool when my kids were young. Cool and miraculous – that each of them are so unique. So themselves.

She’s called a toddler because, well, she toddles: walking with an unsteady gait, which gets more fluid each day. She may be toddling, but she’s also strutting. (I wouldn’t have

thought that combination possible if I hadn’t seen her in action.) She is definitely proud of herself and her newly upright status.

When she does topple over, she rights herself, puts her hands in the air and says “Oh, oh!”

“Oh, oh!” is her go-to phrase for any number of circumstances: when

her freezie drips on the floor, when she can’t open a door or cupboard, when her mom won’t let her eat a crayon, when grandpa drops his phone and so on. Just about any situation can (and does) illicit an “Oh, oh!”

She loves looking out the window at Outside. The only thing better than looking at Outside is going there. If she hears the word “outside” or the word “park” she grabs her shoes and heads to the door – ready to go.

She is a daredevil, especially at the park, where no slide is too big or too fast. She plunges down the

Tom Cullerton applauds move to prevent Legionella outbreaks Illinois may soon have new regulations and rules in place to prevent water-borne illnesses like Legionnaires’ disease.

A General Assembly rulemaking committee has given the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency the authority to more than double the minimum amount of chlorine required in public water supplies.

This move is proposed to prevent the outbreak of heinous water-borne diseases such as Legionnaires’.

Since 2015, 13 residents of the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy

have died of complications caused

by Legionnaires’ disease. Cullerton served in the Army from 1990 to 1993 as an infantryman and has been a staunch advocate for Illinois’ veterans, especially those at the Quincy home greatly affected by continuous cases of Legionnaires’ disease during the last governor’s watch.

During a rulemaking hearing, the Illinois Department of Public Health acknowledged that was the case in the 2015 Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at the veterans home in Quincy, but it also argued that “the minimal residual disinfectant found in the public water supply

was found to be drastically ineffective.”

“Our nation’s heroes have survived foreign conflict zones – the greatest danger they face should not be living in a state facility,” Cullerton said. “I’m glad to see the committee work in a bipartisan manner to not only take care of our veterans but all residents of Illinois.”

The new rule will raise the minimum required level of chlorine in water to 0.5 milligrams per liter of “free” chlorine, or 1.0 milligrams per liter of “combined” chlorine.

Federal regulations only stipulate there be “detectable” levels of chlorine and do not enforce a spe-

cific minimum level.

According to the CDC, people at increased risk of Legionnaire’s disease are 50 years of age or older or have certain risk factors, such as being a current or former smoker, having a chronic disease, or having a weakened immune system.

“People across Illinois should be able to rely on a safe and reliable water supply,” he said. “If we all work together we can institute a real solution to eliminate the risk of harmful diseases such as Legionnaires’ indefinitely.”

TV’s Bachelorette finds Loveknitz Wears Elmhurst company’s hats during shows

When Elmhurst’s Kristin Gudmundsson-Ceddia started her handknit cashmere hat company out of her home in 2014, she didn’t imagine her hats would be part of the journey of one of television’s hottest shows: “The Bachelorette,” currently airing Monday evenings on ABC. That all changed when Ceddia spotted Bachelorette Hannah Brown, on a recent episode of the current season, sporting the Loveknitz grey cashmere hat with a lilac fur pom on top.

To top that, more of the Loveknitz collection has popped up on the hit show, including a hand-woven cashmere scarf.

Though the show is currently airing, filming actually began in early spring, which set the perfect opportunity weather-wise for the accessories to be part of Brown’s quest to find her mate.

“It has been super fun to see Hannah Brown wear Loveknitz on her journey to find love,” said Ceddia.

“So far, she has worn three hats and one of the ombré winter scarves.”

Ceddia and her husband Bob are parents to a 5-year-old son Niklas, who was the recipient of his grandmothers’ hand-knit hats and scarves, that Ceddia says were made with “beautiful, natural yarns.”

“I noticed that most accessories sold in stores were mass produced and made of synthetic fibers. I

wanted to changed that, so I started Loveknitz,” she said. “I found a wonderful manufacturer in Nepal that produced everything with a manual process, and they only worked with natural fibers, including cashmere. I decided to pair the hats with fur pompons that are handmade in New York. The fun aspect of the hats is that you can build your own hat by picking a style and color, and then match it with your favorite pom.”

Unfortunately, as Loveknitz was becoming a reality, Nepal faced the harsh realities of a devastating earthquake. Ceddia once again found inspiration.

“I always wanted Loveknitz to have a philanthropic component, so I decided to give back a portion[of sales] from one of the hat styles to UNICEF, and the funds were earmarked to go to Nepal,” Ceddia said.

“I also personally became involved with UNICEF and went on to become a member of UNICEF’s NextGen Steering Committee. In October, I chaired a fundraiser for them that raised over $13,000 to benefit children impacted by the ongoing crisis in Syria.”

The Loveknitz collection is currently sold online at lovekitz.com and a condensed collection, created for the Chicago Blackhawks, includes a hat, scarf, and poncho that are available at the Blackhawks Store located on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago.

Resident named female scholar-athlete of year Kathryn Wheeler, who played for the Elmhurst College tennis team, was selected as Elmhurst’s Female ScholarAthlete of the Year for the 2018-19 season.

Wheeler, from Elmhurst, posted a team-best 15-5 overall singles record for the women’s tennis team. She posted a 9-2 record at the No. 4 singles spot and an 11-6 record in doubles play. Her 15 singles victories ranks as the seventhhighest win total in program history. Wheeler finished her 3-year career with 36 singles victories and maintained a 3.99 grade-point average while majoring in elementary education.

Old Elmhurst: Personal recollections of a native – Part 6 A history provided by Dr. Frederick H. Bates

(Editor’s note: The Elmhurst Independent has been given the opportunity to bring stories of local history to its readers, courtesy of the Elmhurst History Museum.

These stories, taken from a publication called “Old Elmhurst,” were printed serially in the Elmhurst Press, during the winter of 1919 and 1920. The Independent will print Dr. Bates’ recollections periodically in its upcoming issues. For the most part, Dr. Bates’ language has been unchanged, but part of the story has been edited for length.]

By the untimely death of Henry L. Glos, July 25th, 1907, Elmhurst lost a citizen whose activities for twenty-five years were of the greatest value to Elmhurst. Perhaps no resident ever gave so unstinted of his time, money and council as he did. His name headed every worthy subscription; patriotic, far-seeing, always approachable, he was, in the fullest sense, the friend of those in distress or want. It was to him, no matter what the emergency, that those in trouble instinctively turned; and he was always helpful.

When Elmhurst became an incorporated village in 1881, he was unanimously made its first President of Trustees, and for twenty years he acted in that capacity.

To his indefatigable efforts during those first years of transition and development from a hamlet to a city, we owe much to his good judgement. Under his direction new streets were laid out, objectionable things eliminated, and reforms brought about. A sewerage system was established, street lighting provided, and, in fact, nearly all the improvements that the residents of

Elmhurst now enjoy are largely due to his efforts. By special enactment the beautiful mausoleum where his body rests, on Kenilworth Avenue, was permitted to be built within the limits of the city where he spent his life.

During the years that intervened from 1845 until The Galena & Union Railway came through in 1849, several families came to “Cottage Hill.” (The first name of the village. My father came from Hill House, Ohio, and named his new residence on St. Charles Road, “Hill Cottage.” When the railway officials were casting about for a name for the new station they transposed the name, making it — Cottage Hill, and it remained until 1869, when it was changed to Elmhurst.)

The Bryan, Hagans, Bonney, Snow, Mong and Lasser families arrived in this interval and built homes within the present limits of the city. The subdivision known as “Original Cottage Hill” was laid out and platted by my father, between York Street and Addison Avenue, extending North from the railroad to North Avenue, the northern limit of the township. Subsequently the south half of the East half of Section two was subdivided. This was called “The Summit Addition to Cottage Hill.”

The first lot sold in “Original Cottage Hill” was bought by Louis Graue, who built a general store on it—in 1854, the lot having been purchased with the understanding that my father would discontinue the store owned by him on the opposite side of the railroad. Mr. Graue “kept store” here (on the site now owned by Poulos Brothers, until 1864, when he sold the store to Moritz Hoelscher and built the first brick building here, now owned and occupied by his neph-

ews, William and Julius Graue, under the firm name of Graue Bros., descendants of the pioneer family of Graues, who came to York township in 1835—(84 years ago!). [Ed. note: 184 years as of 2019.]

Another of the early comers was James Lusk, who bought the rest of the frontage along the railroad, from Mr. Graue’s store east to York Street, and several lots in the rear, all together about four acres, comprising that portion of the block

north to Henry Fiene’s store on York Street where John Hahn lived (the first and only resident carpenter in the village up to 1860). His daughter, Mrs. John Keiler lives there still. Mr. Lusk built a rather pretentious residence (still in existence, on Addison Avenue, owned

by Mrs. William Krause, Sr.), about 250 ft. back, approximately fifty feet west of the lot owned by Charles W. Hess.

This building was subsequently

owned by William Williams, the superintendent of the railroad from 1862 to 1866.

It was largely owing to the local interest of Mr. Williams, that the “new” station was built in 1862 (two years before the stone bridge erected over Salt Creek). This station was the best and the largest between Chicago and Turner Junction, (now West Chicago), and was between the tracks, considered at that time a great advantage.

Mazzochi appointed to Property Tax Relief Task Force State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) has been appointed to serve on the newly-created Property Tax Relief Task Force responsible for proposing solutions to achieve meaningful property tax relief for suburban homeowners. Her appointment to the bipartisan task force was made by House Minority Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) in recognition of her commitment to taxpayers.

“We all know Illinois’ property tax system is broken,” Mazzochi said. “High property taxes make it difficult for more families to achieve and State Rep. maintain the dream of homeownership, and make Deanne it nearly impossible for seniors on fixed incomes Mazzochi to afford to stay in their homes. The time for action is long overdue. This Property Tax Relief Task Force signals our commitment to finally come together on a bipartisan basis to reform the system. The Task Force is charged with examining the root causes of high property taxes in communities across the state; assessing other states’ legislative solutions to reduce property tax burdens in both the shortand long-term; and proposing policy changes that will bring real relief to Illinois homeowners.

The Task Force is required to submit a report to the Governor and the General Assembly with both short and long-term solutions that can take an administrative, electoral or legislative approach. The initial report will be produced within 90 days, and a final report will be due

by December 31, 2019.

Time is slipping away to purchase tickets to the Freedom & Dignity Festival, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10 beginning at 3 p.m. at the Schaumburg Boomers Baseball Stadium in Schaumburg. This is the inaugural country music festival to support Café Liberty and our armed forces veterans and their families seeking training and self-sufficiency.

The headliner for the evening, beginning at 9 p.m., is country music star performer Toby Keith.

“We were delighted to have Toby Keith agree to perform a benefit concert for Café Liberty,” said Dan Gibbons, founder of Café Liberty and the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot (DGTT) Foundation.

“He has a big heart for veterans, he has the utmost respect for our armed forces and was happy for the opportunity to help out Liberty Café, once he learned that our mission is to help veterans help themselves, not just give them a handout.”

Pressure still on Illinois not-for-profit despite its reversal of controversial decision

State lawmakers are calling for a review of state contracts and funding awarded to Land of Lincoln Goodwill, a not-for-profit thrift store chain, after a news report revealed the company’s decision to lay off several disabled workers — a decision that will be reversed, according to a statement released Wednesday by the company’s CEO. In a story first reported by Mark Maxwell of WCIA-TV in Champaign, Land of Lincoln Goodwill President and CEO Sharon Durbin attributed the layoffs to a recently passed statewide minimum wage hike, which incrementally increases the minimum wage to $15 hourly by 2025.

The first $1 hourly hike will not take effect until January, however, and Goodwill qualifies for a federal waiver allowing it to pay certain workers far less than the minimum wage.

By July 17, Durbin had released a statement reversing course on the layoffs, which she referred to as a “decision to refocus the Vocational Rehab program.”

“Our recent decision regarding the Voc Rehab program and the resulting harm it might have caused falls short of living up to our mission and we apologize for this error in judgment,” she said in a statement.

“We are reversing the decision to realign our Voc Rehab program and those participants affected will return to their part time skills training program with pay.”

The decision came after the WCIA report reached a national audience and caused local legislators to question state subsidies to the company.

State Sen. Andy Manar, a Bunker Hill Democrat, on Wednesday called on Illinois Department of Human Services Secretary Grace Hou to review $400,000 in taxpayer-funded contracts between the state and Land of Lincoln Goodwill. He maintained his stance in a Twitter post even after the company announced its reversal.

“The behavior of Land of Lincoln Goodwill and its director in the last 72 hours are why I asked for a full review and that hasn’t changed,” he said in a phone call.

Meghan Powers, a spokesperson for IDHS, said the department’s “top priority” is to “ensure that the hardworking employees with disabilities at the Land of Lincoln Goodwill stores are employed and appropriately supported.”

“While we are pleased that it appears Land of Lincoln Goodwill has reversed their decision in this matter, IDHS remains committed to ensuring the organization is fully compliant with state law and the mission of our agency through our agreements,” she said. “We are in the process of carefully examining and reviewing our agreements with Goodwill, and we are prepared to exercise any and all rights to ensure workers are protected.”

Legislators also took umbrage with Durbin’s salary, which was $164,849 in the fiscal year ending in June 2018, according to federal 990 forms. WCIA also reported Durbin’s son, Brian Durbin, was hired onto the company’s executive leadership team at a salary of $95,747.

Manar’s office said tax records show the Land of Lincoln Goodwill raised executive compensation for two positions during the height of the state budget impasse by $86,155 over 3 years.

Mike Egbert, board president of the Illinois Network of Centers for Independent Living, said the Goodwill revelations give a “black eye” to social service agencies, as he criticized “nepotism” hires and CEO raises during a period in which most social service agencies were “just struggling to get by.”

“But more importantly, people with disabilities have a right to be treated fairly and equally, and they face discrimination every day in life. It’s actions like (Durbin’s) to terminate people, but it’s also the words and mannerisms that people use,” he said.

Egbert referred to a video posted on Maxwell’s Twitter account July 16 in which Durbin said the work of disabled employees “really was not a job…It was a work component, and through it, we gave them through grace, out of our budget, to pay them so they had a paycheck to go home with.”

Egbert said Durbin showed she “doesn’t get the world of disabilities.”

“Programs like what Goodwill should be running is to help people overcome those disabilities, those limitations,” he said. “So even her words, her language, is offensive to a lot of people with disabilities, and I believe that there should be more than just reversing her actions.

There’s a bigger picture or underlying climate, to me, at that organization currently.”

A call to Land of Lincoln Goodwill went unreturned July 17.

State Rep. Theresa Mah, a Chicago Democrat, has been working with organizations like Egbert’s to reassess subminimum wage programs in general. She called Durbin’s initial reasoning for the layoffs “ludicrous,” considering Goodwill’s federal authorization to pay a subminimum wage to disabled workers.

Mah said her Illinois Dignity in Pay Act, which stalled in the General Assembly this year, will be brought up again when legislators return to Springfield.

That bill would call for the DHS to develop and implement a plan over the next five years to phase out subminimum wage procedures.

In a March press conference, Mah said her bill would create a worker protection fund, establish customized work plans for each subminimum wage worker, freeze the issuance of subminimum wage certificates, and require reporting and evaluation on the progress of reforms.

Mah said part of the protection fund would go to state subsidies to facilities paying increased wages in certain cases, although the exact percentage of the wage match was not yet defined in the legislation.

“We’re not saying that once this bill passes, there’s a cliff and they’re going to have to start paying minimum wage.

There’s a phase-out plan that’s being proposed that looks out for their (employer) interests, as well as the interest of people with disabilities. I think the bottom line is that these are people we’re talking about and paying anyone 74 cents per hour is inhumane,” Mah said in a phone interview Wednesday.

In March, advocates said funding would ideally come from already-allocated but unused funding to the IDHS Department of Developmental Disabilities.

Since 2010, an average of $120 million in funding for the Division has gone unspent each year.

Mah’s proposal seems to have a backer in Democratic U.S. Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, a U.S. Senator from Vermont. He tweeted about the Illinois Goodwill flap in response to WCIA’s sharing of the story Tuesday.

“No worker should be told they’re lucky to get less than minimum wage,” Sanders said. “People with disabilities deserve jobs that pay a living wage. It’s time to end the subminimum wage and guarantee truly integrated employment opportunities for people with disabilities.”

As more states move to legalize the use of marijuana and other cannabis-related substances, state officials across the country are urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to move toward regulating the manufacturing and marketing of those products.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said July 18 that he joined a coalition of attorneys general from 35 other states and the District of Columbia in urging the FDA to work with them in developing regulations to govern the fast-growing industry.

“As attorney general, it is my responsibility to protect Illinois consumers by enforcing our consumer protection laws,” Raoul said in a news release. “I urge the FDA to include state attorneys general in oversight over the emerging market of cannabis-derived products so we can continue to protect consumers and ensure they are not at risk of misleading advertising or exposed to products that could be harmful to their health.”

The FDA began taking public comments earlier this year, “to obtain scientific data and information about the safety, manufacturing, product quality, marketing, labeling, and sale of products containing

cannabis or cannabis-derived compounds.”

The decision to begin taking public comments was driven largely by the recent legalization of industrial hemp and its derivatives, including cannabidiol, or CBD, an oil that is said to have therapeutic value in treating a variety of medical conditions.

Industrial hemp is defined as a cannabis plant that contains less than 0.3 percent THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana.

That, according to FDA, has led to an explosion of new CBD-related products on the market, many of which carry extraordinary claims about their ability to treat serious medical conditions such as cancer.

While Sarah May’s running career is over at York High School, she’s really just getting started.

May has been plenty busy this summer in the sport. She has been working at York boys cross country and track coach Charlie Kern’s well-known running camp, while also working out in preparation for her big move to Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan later this summer.

“I’ve been doing mostly a lot of base mileage,” she said. “I’m working on building up my mileage.”

May, who was named York’s outstanding senior female athlete for this past school year, said her coaches at Grand Valley have given her workouts to do on her own, plus she recently was scheduled to work a high-school camp at her soon-to-be new home.

Overall, May is chomping at the bit to start her college run. “I’m really excited,” she said. “I think it will be a good change from high school. I’m really excited about my team and my coaches. When I went on my visit there I knew the coaches would take care of me. The team is amazing and I was comfortable with the campus.”

May plans on studying exercise science at Grand Valley. “I’d like to

The York sophomore summer baseball team turned up the jets when it counted the most.

The Dukes, under the direction of coach Kevin Mundle, reached the final four of the sophomore DuKane Summer League tournament.

York lost a close 11-10 contest to St. Charles East in the state semifinals held at Trout Park in Elgin.

York reached the final four by scoring a thrilling 3-0 win over Hinsdale Central in a contest that went 11 innings to win the West region title.

The Dukes finished the regular season with a 7-7 mark and earned the No. 5 seed in the West region.

York opened the postseason with a 6-3 win over Glenbard North. In that contest, Jack Gazdacka went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Aidan Nawrocki went 2-for-4. Mundle noted the team received five strong innings on the hill from Zach Bormann and two good innings from Daniel Di Chiara.

York then recorded a 7-5 win over Downers Grove South that sent it to the West region final. Jimmy Lofendo went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Luke Gordon and Max Hansmann pitched the final four innings. “Luke and Max did a good job keeping us in the game,” said Mundle.

The Dukes trailed 5-4 going into the seventh inning, but scored three runs in the top of the seventh to pull out the victory.

That set the stage for the 11-inning marathon against Hinsdale Central.

York received key hits from Greg Lee, Mark Schneider, Luke Barmada and Ethan Cancel (Cancel also had a cup of coffee with the varsity summer team in the state summer tournament). “That finally put us on the board,” said Mundle.

A.J. Trapp and Schneider turned in key pitching efforts for York against Hinsdale Central. “We had big-game pitching from A.J. and Mark, who combined for an 11-inning shutout victory,” Mundle noted.

In the 11-10 loss to St. Charles East, Barmada went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Cancel was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Gazdacka went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Schneider had a key hit.

“The tournament is a great first playoff experience for high-school players,” said Mundle. “I was glad

to see our York guys playing baseball together and being successful. I can’t wait to see what spring of 2020 brings for York baseball, especially at the sophomore level.”

Mundle said this summer group had zero quit in it. “What stood out most with this group was its resiliency and ability to bounce back when things weren’t going their way,” he explained. “It’s a good trait to have because even when we were down, we never felt like we were out of any games we played this summer, especially in the playoffs.”

Communication also was a major bright spot.” This group improved the most with its communicating with one another and understanding of situational baseball,” said Mundle.

go to graduate school for occupational therapy. My dad used occupational therapy a lot when he was sick. I’d like to do the same thing for other people and help them out. They have good programs there. I sat in on a kinesiology class there and I really liked it. The teacher was good and the class sizes are small enough where there is a lot of interaction. And there are a lot of opportunities for internships.”

May said her time at York on the cross country and track and field teams was very enjoyable. “I had the best teammates,” she said. “It was amazing.

The whole community was super-supportive. I’m proud of the team for how far we came. I had a real good experience at York.”

When she was younger, May didn’t envision a running career for herself.

Meet Elmhurst’s Twitter sensation Ricky Cobb’s ‘Super 70s Sports’ account brings yesteryear’s sports and pop culture references back to life in a most colorful way

If you are a Generation Xer, at one point in your life you’ve likely rode a Big Wheel, carried a metal lunchbox emblazoned with some 1970s or 1980s television program or sports entity on it and watched shows such as “Kojak,” “Quincy,” “The Brady Bunch” and “The A-Team.”

For Elmhurst resident Ricky Cobb, it’s all of the above and then some. And Cobb is using the power of social media and his, shall we say, colorful sense of humor to bring these classics back to life.

Cobb is the owner of the wildly popular Super 70s Sports Twitter account (@ Super70Sports) and the Super 70s Sports Podcast (iTunes and Super70sSports.com).

His Twitter account now has some 275,000 followers and is regularly panned on the social media platform as a must follow. The account is followed by some heavyweights in the professional sports and entertainment industries.

Cobb, a veteran sociology teacher at Moraine Valley Community College in south-suburban Palos Hills, started the account around 2015. “It was pretty much something I thought I would do for fun and for my own amusement,” said Cobb, assistant professor, sociology and vice president, faculty association at Moraine. “I’m a fan of Dan Epstein, who wrote the book ‘Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A funky ride through baseball and American in the Swinging ‘70s,’ that kind of looks at the excesses of baseball at the time with the hairstyles, the uniforms and the smoking and

drinking. He had a Facebook page dedicated to the book and he would post baseball cards there (Cobb’s account is loaded with 70s and 80s baseball card references). I commented on them a few times. It was fun and I thought maybe I would try something. That’s the genesis of it, make jokes about sports and nostalgia and go from there, and maybe a few people would enjoy it.

“I certainly never thought it would be anything of the width it’s turned into now.”

A recent post the 47-year-old Cobb made about children being thrown off metal park merry-gorounds at high speeds back in the day had more than 10,500 likes.

Another one playing off a recent incident where an adult male swooped in and took a baseball from a child that had been hit in the stands had more than 2,300 likes (Cobb sided with the adult male in the post).

Yet another post pining for a return to the days when ESPN provided only games, scores and highlights and MTV played actual music videos had 6,300 likes.

An earlier Tweet, and one of Cobb’s all-time favorites, about sportscaster Howard Cosell, Bruce Jenner and OJ Simpson had more than 110,000 likes and more than 52,000 retweets and was referenced on Howard Stern’s radio show during an interview with television personality Jimmy Kimmel.

“It’s been silly,” said Cobb, a Kentucky native, who graduated from Western Kentucky University and the University of Louisville.

“It’s a little bit crazy to me. I am very aware how fortunate I am to

“I grew up in Kentucky and that’s pretty far apart culturally from say Chicago, but still if you were a certain age and liked sports, you instantly are able to speak the same language about things such as lunch boxes, toys, movies, restaurants—all those things we experienced as American kids during that time period,” he explained. “It’s stuff that you don’t talk about too much anymore, except maybe when you’re with your buddies and you are shooting the (breeze). You’re instant friends because you speak the same language.”

And while on the subject of language, Cobb’s account is known for its unabashed and frequent use of profanity (Cobb has his go-to swear words, some longer in letter length than others) when bringing back to life these 70s and 80s cultural classics.

“Yeah, that’s me in real life, no doubt about it,” he admitted.

“That’s who I am and that’s how I speak. Like anything, yes, it’s entertainment, but if my personality is an eight, the account is me turning the knob to the right a little more.

It’s absolutely me, but cranked up all the way. I’m definitely a curser, much to the chagrin of my southern Baptist mother, who doesn’t like using curse words. It’s like oxygen.

Certain words need to be sprinkled in there to communicate effectively.”

Cobb said he usually has a pretty good idea from the get-go if one of his posts will turn into Twitter gold. I have my personal favorites,” he said. “Most of the time, I have an idea if the tweet will be really good—my instincts are pretty good. Sometimes I’ll put one out that I don’t think is necessarily good and sometimes I get surprised. It’s a matter of what people do and don’t like.”

Cobb estimates he does about 20-25 tweets per day and noted he hasn’t missed a day since January 2015.

“I try and do 15 no matter what,” he said. “If it’s lower than 15, I must have been really busy or burned out that day. Some days the jokes come to you more days than others. It’s kind of like the wind, you don’t know when you are going to have that mojo or if you are going to have to grind it out that day.”

These days, Cobb has started employing the use of a popular social media posting platform that allows him to time the release of his tweets. “If I’m on vacation or I know I’m going to be tied up for a few hours, I can put a few in ahead of time, and then be able to enjoy the concert, ballgame or play

with my kids,” he said. “If I’m in the middle of nowhere in a cabin in Wisconsin, I can load two-daysworth, and then I’m able to be a dad and not have to fumble with a phone all the time to try and post things.”

To date, Cobb noted he’s received no backlash from folks his jokes are centered around. “I’ve never had anybody get offended,” he said. “I always say I’m probably overdue for as many jokes as I make and arrows I sling. It’s a wink and a nod. People understand I’m not being a (jerk) for the sake of being a (jerk).”

Cobb has been able to take the platform and monetize it to a certain degree through affiliate marketing, mainly related to sports apparel, and specifically apparel that caters to fans of old team logos and classic uniforms.

Cobb added that a Super 70s Sports-branded apparel line is forthcoming, and he also is immersed in another sports nostalgia-based clothing line endeavor with actor Chad Lowe, a friend of Cobb’s.

“It’s certainly not to the point where I’d consider doing this fulltime yet,” he said. “If things con-

tinued to grow and the opportunity arose, I could see it happen. It’s kind of turned into a second fulltime job. I’ve put a ton of hours into it, working on the business side and building it into something that can grow.”

Cobb is humbled by the response he’s received from readers of his account, specifically those who say things such as “best thing on Twitter,” or “must follow.”

“I have more followers than I’ve ever had and I know that if I’m doing 20 tweets that day they have to be good. I look at every day as an audition. You never know who is going to see a tweet that might want to work with you or be interested in you as a talent or performer,” he said.

“It’s very humbling when people say those nice things. It’s something that I do not ever want to be desensitized to. It’s unspoken in their comments that they have a very high standard for you and you have set the bar high. That makes me want to work even harder and entertain them even more and give them great content. I have to be funny, (expletive deleted), that’s what it comes down to in the simplest terms.”

Elmhurst American Legion baseball team concludes season at district tournament Parnell cracks grand slam in Post 187 win against Steger

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team wrapped up its season at the recent 11th District tournament held at Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream. Wheaton Post 76 hosted the tournament.

Elmhurst opened play with a tough 7-6 loss to host Wheaton. The Muddogs led 3-0 after two innings and 6-2 after five innings. Wheaton

scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and won it with a pair in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Elmhurst had 14 hits in the game.

Ian Steinorth (York) had two hits and an RBI. AJ Parnell (Addison Trail) added a hit. Jack Enright (IC Catholic Prep) had a big game, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored.

Tim Bowbin (York) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Connor Gwaltney (Timothy Christian) had a hit and a run scored. Jimmy O’Donnell (Leyden) had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Dave Sykora (IC Catholic Prep) had two hits. Andrew Pietrucha (Fenton) went 2-for-

3 with an RBI. O’Donnell doubled in the game and Enright had a stolen base.

Ken Slepicka (Fenwick) took the loss. He went 6 1/3 innings and struck out 11, while walking only two.

The Muddogs came back through the loser’s bracket and scored a 12-2 win over Steger in five innings. Elmhurst led 2-0 after one, 8-0 after two innings thanks to a six-run outburst in that frame, and 12-0 after three.

Steinorth went 1-for-2 with three runs scored and a walk. Ryan Malek (IC Catholic Prep) went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk. Parnell went

1-for-1 with two runs scored, a walk and five RBI. Enright went 1-for2 with two runs scored and a walk.

Bowbin went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Gwaltney went 1-for-3 with a run scored. O’Donnell had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Sykora scored a run and walked twice. Pietrucha had an RBI and Adam Parat (York) walked once. Gwaltney doubled and Parnell cracked a grand slam.

Aidan Kress (Fenton), Tim Beecroft (Fenton) and Enright each pitched in the game. Kress fanned four in two innings. Beecroft fanned

two in 1 1/3 innings, while Enright had two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.

Elmhurst was then eliminated after a 9-1 loss to Wheaton. Steinorth had a hit, while Ryan Malek (IC Catholic Prep) had a pair of hits. Gwaltney had a hit and a run scored. Sykora had an RBI and Bowbin drew a walk.

Gwaltney’s hit was a triple.

Parnell went the first 5 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs, while striking out three. Elmhurst was plagued by four errors in the game.

Wheaton led 4-0 after two innings and 5-1 after four.

The Muddogs finished the season with a 10-8-1 mark.

Prime Days: Not for everyone

We know the phrase “Christmas in July,” but now Amazon Prime Days (July 15 and 16) are being dubbed Black Friday in July. Black Friday is a dubious “holiday” but still is known in the U.S. as the biggest shopping day of the year.

How will Amazon Prime Days shake out? Do they clobber Black Friday numbers? I have no idea.

With the advent of online sales and 24/7 brick and mortar stores with door busters all day and all night, the day after Thanksgiving shop til you drop for amazing bargains day has lost part of its punch.

Twenty years ago, when my sis-in-law dragged me out at 5 a.m. to line up outside stores to get miscellaneous deals, I was shocked to see all the other crazies out at that hour. Black Friday shopping became our tradition for a few years.

“No, I thought I was going to play soccer in college,” she said. “That was my main sport in middle school and most of freshman year. Freshman year I realized I couldn’t do travel soccer at the same time. But I did not think I would be running in college.”

May, who noted many of her family members have running backgrounds, said after a season of track the lightbulb turned on in her head. “After track, I realized I could do something special if I put a lot of work into it,” she said.

May added another aspect of the sport she loves is the relationships she has made. “The really exciting part is the people,” she said. “You get to know a lot of people through running. The sport brings people together. That’s one of the fun parts about running. It doesn’t matter what team you are on, you can make a lot of friends.”

ning with a group that includes athletes from different high schools. “Right now I’m training with other people from different schools to get our mileage in, which is really nice,” she said.

“I’ve spent a lot of time on the Prairie Path running or over in Glen Ellyn.

One of the people I run with lives over there. It’s a lot of people I’ve competed against. We get together and run together.”

Looking back, out of all her accomplishments at York, May said one in particular stands out. “It would probably have to be junior year at state track,” she said. “That’s when our 4-by-8 got all-state. It was really cool to get all-state, but to have your best friends there with you made it so much better.”

May said she’s slated to report to Grand Valley State on Aug. 17 for a preseason cross-country camp. She added classes start the week after.

The York sophomore summer team features players that were part of the York freshmen baseball teams this past spring, plus several others who did not play in the spring. “We welcome players back in the summer who might have been out in the spring,” said Mundle. “So while most of these young men were on the spring team, a

couple guys who played this summer were playing for York for the first time.”

Mundle, like York varsity head coach Dave Kalal, puts a big emphasis on the summer season. “The summer season is very important in that as coaches we get to see these guys play in live games as opposed to evaluating them for three days inside next spring,” he said. “Like I stated before, it’s great seeing York ballplayers playing baseball together and being successful.”

Now the hoopla is less intense.

The lining up outside a store is not as popular. Black Friday sales run the whole month of November and you can stay up late on Turkey Day instead of having to get up early on Friday.

And of course, Amazon is now part of our world.

The first Prime Days went by me, as I don’t pay much attention to such things. Prime Day debuted in 2015, and this year it is now a 2-day event. Yes, the hype calls it an event. So this year, I thought I would give it a whirl.

There are online video tutorials to learn how to get the most of out of Prime Days, but I didn’t want to take the time. Maybe I should have. I guess there were pre-Prime Day sales to get you mouse finger ready to click and buy.

I missed that but as I scrolled through deals on July 15, I realized not only has our shopping landscape changed in the last two decades, I’ve changed in the last twenty years too. My impulse buys these days are relegated pretty much to home décor. Not much of that happening on Prime Day. At least I didn’t find any and for that I’m grateful.

Prime Day is tech-heavy. My earlier self would have pulled the trigger on a new laptop. Now I ask myself Do I Really Need It? And does it come in pink? (If I would have found a pink one, I might have bought it.)

My needs are few these days, and my wants are mostly fulfilled too. I prefer less stuff in my “old” age and more time sitting on the deck listening to the birds. But I wanted to attempt to be hip and check out the ballyhooed Prime Days. (I don’t think hipsters today use the word ballyhoo.)

My time at my computer is for work, so I can’t sit and wait and watch to jump on the lightning sales that happen during the thirty hours of Prime Days. Blue light specials…. Nor do I want to have the app notify me so I can stock up on light bulbs or whatever when they go on a flash sale.

I’m feeling a little curmudgeony.

To each his own. Some folks may go nuts for Black Friday in July, just like the Friday after

Thanksgiving. And Thanksgiving night. And the day before Thanksgiving….But Prime Days did not suck me in. Perhaps when

it comes to shopping, I am past my prime.

Governor calls on flood-affected residents to report damage

Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office is urging Illinoisans to report any damages caused by recent flooding to their county’s emergency management agencies in order to increase the likelihood of the state qualifying for federal aid.

A release from Pritzker’s office said Illinois can qualify for federal assistance if the total flood damage in the state meets or exceeds $19 million.

A formal request to the federal government must be submitted by Aug. 3, which is 30 days after the last impacted river fell below major flood stage, the governor’s of-

fice said. Once the state completes the report, the Federal Emergency Management Agency makes a recommendation to the president, who has the final say as to whether relief can be granted.

“While the ultimate decision on our state receiving federal funds lies with Washington, my administration is committed to doing everything in our power to ensure our communities get all resources available to recover,” Pritzker, a Democrat, said in a news release. “Our state has not received a federal disaster declaration since 2013 and there is no doubt this will be an uphill battle.”

Emergency managers in each impacted county are assessing damage,

including residential, commercial and governmental expenses. The county agencies will then report that information to the state by the close of business July 22 via the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

Some flexibility will be given for counties where floodwaters are still blocking access to homes or roads.

The state established a website for flood communications and resources which can be found at www.

Illinois.gov/2019Floods.

The site contains a module which allows residents and business owners to submit an initial damage report online. The website then forwards the submission to the appropriate county emergency management

agency for follow-up reporting.

Acting IEMA Director Alicia Tate-Nadeau said any damage, “regardless of whether it is $200 or $20,000,” should be reported to county agencies.

“Previous agency experience has demonstrated the importance of being as thorough as possible during this initial damage assessment,” she said in a statement. “Any kind of flood-related damage should be reported to your county emergency management office. … Without a complete picture of the damage caused by this flood, Illinois could miss out on invaluable federal funds that can help our state rebuild following this extensive disaster.”

There have been 36 Illinois counties covered by gubernatorial disaster declaration in 2019, and Pritzker’s office said the state’s emergency operations center in Springfield was activated for more than 150 days throughout the flooding cycle.

The governor’s office said the state and its partners have deployed more than 5 million sandbags, 38,000 tons of rock, 3,000 rolls of plastic, 450 feet of flood control barriers and 1,750 feet of water control dams.

It also deployed more than 400 Illinois National Guardsmen and 97 pumps in affected areas, and distributed more than 14,000 emergency supplies.

New rules are intended to prevent water-borne bacteria like Legionella

Some people in Illinois may soon notice the water coming out of their taps tastes different.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is on the verge of adopting new regulations that would more than double the minimum amount of chlorine required in public water supplies, a move intended to prevent the outbreak of water-borne illnesses such as Legionnaires’ disease.

Since 2015, 13 elderly residents of the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy have died of complications caused by Legionnaires’ disease, a form of pneumonia caused inhaling water vapor infected with Legionella bacteria.

“Legionella is the target of that

rule,” said Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego, co-chair of the General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, or JCAR. JCAR gave its blessing to the proposed new rule July 16 during a brief meeting in Chicago. That means IEPA is now free to formally adopt the new rule, making it enforceable on all public water systems in the state.

Although there was no debate about the proposed new rule during the July 16 meeting, the issue raising the state’s rule on minimum chlorine levels was the subject of intense discussion for nearly two years between state officials, local water supply systems and a nonprofit organization called the Alliance to Prevent Legionnaires’ Disease.

Chlorine is an element on the periodic chart that has been used for decades to disinfect water. It is also a key ingredient in household bleach.

Regulators use two different ways to measure the amount of chlorine in water. One is the amount of “free” chlorine that exists as dissolved gas in the water; the other is “combined” chlorine, referring to chlorine that has bonded with ammonia or other organic compounds in the water.

Current regulations require a minimum of 0.2 milligrams of “free” chlorine per liter of water in all parts of the distribution system, or 0.5 milligrams of “combined” chlorine per liter.

The new rule will raise that to 0.5 milligrams per liter of “free” chlorine,

or 1.0 milligrams per liter of “combined” chlorine.

IEPA first proposed the higher standards in August 2017. The proposal then went under intense review by the Illinois Pollution Control Board, an independent agency in charge of defining and implementing environmental regulations in the state. In July 2018, that board issued an opinion and published the first notice of the proposed new rules, which triggered a public comment period and public hearings.

During that process, two water utilities—the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency and Springfield’s City Water Light and Power— objected to the proposals.

They noted that federal environmental regulations only require there

to be “detectible” levels of chlorine, and do not set any numeric standards.

They also argued that only a handful of other states require chlorine levels as high as those Illinois is proposing, and that there is scant evidence such limits have any impact on public health, especially since diseases such as Legionnaires’ disease are usually the result of aging or deteriorated plumbing inside a customer’s building, not in the distribution system.

The Illinois Department of Public Health acknowledged that was the case in the 2015 Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at the veterans home in Quincy, but it also argued that, “the minimal residual disinfectant found in the public water supply was found to be drastically ineffective.”
