York High School sports camps shut down amid COVID-19 rumors District 205 chief implores community to be vigilant with social distancing guidelines

York High School shuttered all its athletic camps late last week due to what Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 labeled several instances of possible COVID-19 exposure and positive cases that have occurred.

This while rumors swirled in the community of large student gatherings off campus where social distancing guidelines were eschewed. Meanwhile, District 205’s top executive is imploring community-wide vigilance related to COVID-19 as the return to school looms in just over a month, while the fate of fall high school sports hangs in the balance.

All York sports camps and athletics have been cancelled until Aug. 9, and the school district said no decision on fall sports has been made.

Two sources with direct ties to District 205 told the Elmhurst Independent similar stories of knowledge of multiple student parties/gatherings where attendance numbered in the estimated 50-100 range, with the majority of attendees being York students. Both sources, who requested anonymity because of their direct ties to the district, said students in the incoming junior class at York were the common thread in these gatherings.

As to the rumors in the Elmhurst community of these gatherings being labeled “COVID parties” where attendees were willingly trying to contract the COVID-19 virus, the two sources gave varying opinions on the veracity of that theory, with one citing news reports of these types of parties occurring in the southern parts of the country (including one news report of parties of this nature

occurring in Alabama where the first person to test positive received a cash payday) and these local area gatherings being copycat in nature, while the other source said students may have been joking about that

aspect, but cited knowledge of social media posts where students were advertising trying to get the virus at these parties.

With a DuPage County Board meeting looming in his future on Tuesday, July 14, County Board member Pete DiCianni (District 2), already under fire for comments he made and behavior exhibited at a “Back the Blue” rally in Elmhurst two weeks ago, decided to send a robocall to his constituents, which did not sit well with County Board Chairman Dan Cronin.

Two County Board members were already calling for DiCianni to be censured over what they referred to his “outrageous behavior” at the Back the Blue event, which included yelling in someone’s face without wearing a protective mask.

In a letter to Chairman Cronin, Downers Grove Democrat Elizabeth Chaplin said she was disturbed by what she called DiCianni’s “aggressive actions, inappropriate language and compete lack of respect for the safety of others.”

“Without wearing a mask, he yelled in the faces of my constituents and boasted about being a county board member and mayor painting all of us with the same brush,” Chaplin’s message read. “This behavior is unbecoming to the office of a member of the DuPage County Board, the Chairman of the DuPage County Health and Human Services Committee, or any elected official.”

Mary FitzGerald Ozog, a Democrat from Glen Ellyn in District 4, also penned a memo to Cronin asking for DiCianni’s censure. (A censure is a public record of disapproval that does

not carry any additional penalties such as removal from office.)

Several short videos had made the rounds on social media showing DiCianni in various arguments and confrontations with others at the event, particularly those supporting Black Lives Matter. One such video showed DiCianni without a protective face mask carrying a sign that read, “We back police,” while shouting at other protesters. In one clip, DiCianni can be heard yelling, “You leave our town then,” in response to comments from BLM protesters.

The manner of the response, on the heels of DiCianni’s actions at the protest, prompted the Hinsdale for Black Lives Matter organization to demand his resignation. The change.org petition had more than 1,000 signatures prior to the July 14 Board meeting.

DiCianni’s robocall draws criticism from Cronin Then on Sunday, July 12, two days before the County Board meeting at which the matter would be discussed, DiCianni sent a robocall to his constituents, which reportedly contained comments that the County Board was considering defunding of the police.

With no plans of defunding the police whatsoever, DiCianni’s robocall apparently sparked the ire of Chairman Cronin, prompting him to release the following statement online: “I believe it’s necessary and important to refute information that was shared during an automated telephone call to residents on Sunday.

“There is no effort underway by any DuPage County Board member to defund police. There is no item on Tuesday’s County Board agenda aimed at law enforcement budgets or manpower. One board member chose to deliberately share misinformation after

he was criticized for appearing at a rally, not wearing a mask, and speaking loudly in the face of another protester.

He was also criticized for inappropriate language used in an exchange over email, which was then shared on social media. None of those things have anything to do with the business of the DuPage County Board, which is focused on protecting the health and safety of all and helping our businesses and families weather these challenging times.

“I have a duty to make sure the public is accurately informed. As Chairman of DuPage County, I wholeheartedly support our law enforcement.

But this board member’s actions have nothing to do with support for police.

By circulating a misleading robocall, this Board member has caused unnecessary fear and anxiety. It has caused a situation where people may feel compelled to gather unnecessarily while COVID-19 is spiking, endangering themselves, our staff and the security team that must ensure the health and safety of the public.

“We are dedicated to adhering to public health guidelines and demanding responsible behavior from elected County Board members. Moreover, I will take every action and commit every resource that I can to keeping our community healthy and safe.”

As a result of the meeting, DiCianni stepped down as Chair of the board’s Health and Human Services Committee, but stopped short of a full apology.

“Nobody should behave that way but especially an elected official,” said Chaplin. “You are an elected official, head of the Health and Human Services committee and you are out in public screaming at people.

“It is unacceptable that you are putting people at risk.”

At the Elmhurst City Council meeting held on Monday, July 20, Mayor Steve Morley presented his nominees for the two open aldermanic seats, which were vacated by First Ward Alderman Mark Sabatino and 4th Ward Alderman Kevin York, both of whom left for personal reasons.

Following the mayor’s presentation of the two candidates, both were confirmed by the full City Council by a vote of 12-0.

They are: • Jennifer Veremis, who will represent the First Ward — A 22-year resident, Veremis owns two Elmhurst businesses, The Beauty Lounge since 2004 and Goal.Get.Her Inc., a lifestyle and business coaching firm, since last year. She is on the City Centre’s board of directors. “I’ve built trusted relationships with the residents and business owners in Ward 1 and throughout Elmhurst,” she said in her letter to the mayor. “During my time in Elmhurst, our town has flourished before my eyes and I would love to help drive its continued growth.”

• Brian Cahill, who will represent the 4th Ward — An 18-year resident, Cahill is president and CEO of Diesel Radiator Co. He has a master’s degree in biomedical engineering. He is involved with IC Church, YMCA and the American Youth Soccer Organization. In his application, Cahill said he believed his well-rounded background could help Elmhurst continue to be a “wonderful place to live and raise a family.”

After Veremis and Cahill were seated, Mayor Morley announced that Council was now “full strength again.”

Four candidates applied for Sabatino’s Ward 1 position, while six vied for York’s Ward 4 seat. One of the Ward 1 candidates was disqualified by the mayor.

At the end of the July 20 meeting when the mayor called for a motion to adjourn, Veremis so moved and Cahill seconded, marking their first official acts as aldermen.

COVID-19 updates for DuPage County

As of 11 a.m. on Monday, July 20, there were 10,308 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 495 deaths. Since Sunday, there were 123 new cases and one death of a male in his 70s with COVID-19 reported.

ComEd’s bribery admission implicates Madigan Court document shows utility agrees to pay $200 million, admits attempts to influence House Speaker

Hours after filing a court document implicating—but not charging—Illinois’ House Speaker Michael Madigan in a years-long bribery scheme, federal officials took to the courtyard of the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago on July 17 to deliver a message to those engaging in public corruption: “We will find you too.”

The charges in the document filed July 17 are officially against Commonwealth Edison, Illinois’ largest electric utility company, which has agreed to pay $200 million and to continue cooperating with an ongoing federal corruption probe in order to defer prosecution for a single count of bribery. Per that agreement—which is still pending approval from a judge – prosecution against the utility giant would be delayed for three years and potentially dismissed in exchange for the company’s cooperation.

The bombshell in the report, however, is that ComEd admitted to— from 2011 until 2019—seeking to “influence and reward Public Official A” for that person’s favorable action on legislation. While Public Official A is not directly named in the document, that person is later identified as “the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives and the longest serving member of the House of Representatives.”

The current House Speaker is Michael Madigan, a Chicago Democrat who has held that position since 1983, except for a brief stint from 1995 to 1997. The documents did not contain his name or any charges against the person identified as “Public Official A.” At their news conference July 17, federal authorities said the FBI does not name those who are not charged.

The implications were clear, however, as federal officials said ComEd “admitted it arranged jobs, vendor subcontracts, and monetary payments associated with those jobs and subcontracts, for various associates of a high-level elected official” in order to advance legislation that would bring the company monetary benefits

that “exceeded $150 million.”

This occurred “even in instances where these political allies and workers did little to no work that they were reportedly hired to perform,” John Lausch Jr., U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, said at a Chicago news conference.

“In many ways, this agreement— including and specifically ComEd’s statement of facts—it speaks for itself,” Lausch said. “But it also speaks volumes about the nature of a very stubborn public corruption problem we have here in Illinois.

The admitted facts detail a nearly decade-long corruption scheme involving top management at a large public utility, leaders in state government, consultants, and several others inside and outside of government.”

Later on July 17, a statement issued via a communications firm on behalf of Madigan said he had “accepted subpoenas” at his offices asking for documents related to job recommendations “among other things.”

“He will cooperate and respond to those requests for documents, which he believes will clearly demonstrate that he has done nothing criminal or improper,” according to the statement distributed by Maura Possley of the BoycePossley firm.

“The speaker has never helped someone find a job with the expectation that the person would not be asked to perform work by their employer, nor did he ever expect to provide anything to a prospective employer if it should choose to hire a person he recommended. He has never made a legislative decision with improper motives and has engaged in no wrongdoing here. Any claim to the contrary is unfounded,” Possley said in the emailed statement.

Lausch, however, said it was a “complex question” as to whether a public official has to benefit directly from an action for it to constitute criminal activity.

“The short answer is, sometimes a corruption charge is appropriate if it does benefit someone personally, and other times a charge is appropriate if it benefits somebody else,” he said.

The public utility company, which is subject to heavy state regulation, admitted it “understood that, as speaker of the House of Representatives, Public Official A was able to exercise control over what measures were called for a vote in the House of Representatives and had substan-

tial influence and control over fellow lawmakers concerning legislation, including legislation that affected ComEd.” The electric utility also admitted in the court document that it appointed an individual to its board of directors and retained a particular law firm “at the request of Public Official A.” It also accepted into an internship program “a specified target number of students who primarily resided in a Chicago ward that Public Official A was associated with.”

In a statement, Christopher Crane, CEO of ComEd’s parent company, Exelon, said, “In the past, some of ComEd’s lobbying practices and in-

teractions with public officials did not live up to” the company’s standards.

“When we learned about the inappropriate conduct, we acted swiftly to investigate. We concluded from the investigation that a small number of senior ComEd employees and outside contractors orchestrated this misconduct, and they no longer work for the company,” he said. “Since then, we have taken robust action to aggressively identify and address deficiencies, including enhancing our compliance governance and our lobbying policies to prevent this type of conduct.”

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass July 12-July 13 Criminal damage to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of Fellows Court. Police said officers observed a silver Hyundai Accent parked on the street, with the rear window shattered and a small dent on the rear passenger side of the vehicle. An investigation is pending.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, damage to property, disturbance July 15 James Roth, 65, of Berwyn, was issued citations for disorderly conduct-public intoxication and littering near Division and Vallette at around 10:19 a.m.

July 13 Police said officers responded to the 600 block of W. North at around 7:50 p.m. for the report of a male punching a female while inside of a vehicle in the parking lot. The victim related that subsequent to a verbal argument, the suspect struck her with a closed fist several times, took her cell phone and debit card, and fled the scene on foot. The officer observed injuries to the victim. She was treated by medics on scene. Charges are pending a warrant being issued.

July 9 Police said officers responded to the area of Arlington and St. Charles at around 2:07 p.m. for the report of a male juvenile suspect hitting a female victim while inside of a vehicle.

The victim related that the suspect punched her several times. The victim had no signs of injury but was checked by medics. The suspect stated he was involved in an argument with the victim, refused to provide any further statements and provided a false name to officers. The suspect was arrested, charged with domestic battery, obstructing identification, resisting a peace officer and no valid driver’s license, and was transported to the Kane County Juvenile Center. .

Fleeing, eluding July 13 Police said a reporting officer observed passengers smoking cannabis in a vehicle as it traveled in restaurant drive-thru lane in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at around 1:39 p.m.

The uniformed officer approached the driver’s window and instructed Shaun T. Landers, 21, of Bellwood, to stop his vehicle, according to police. Police said Landers instead drove away fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. The registered owner of the car was contacted and Landers turned himself in at the police station later that evening. He was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.

July 9 Police said that subsequent to stopping a suspect during a traffic stop near Butterfield and Route 83 at around 8:08 a.m., an officer detected the odor of burnt cannabis coming from inside of the vehicle. Upon advising the suspect to exit the vehicle, the suspect stated there was no cannabis in the vehicle and fled the traffic stop at a high rate of speed. A warrant was issued for the suspect with the charges of fleeing and eluding, speeding, and a seat belt violation.

Harassment, threats

July 13 A complainant in the 100 block of N. Addison told police at around 4:31 p.m. that a few days ago, a suspect threatened the complainant with physical harm. The reporting officer advised the suspect to cease all contact with the complainant and advised the complainant to file a report within her jurisdiction for the threat.

July 9 Police said a subject in the 500 block of W. Lake was recently terminated and has been sending threatening emails to the company.

The complainant advised the subject was seen sitting in his vehicle in the parking lot of the business. Multiple employees felt threatened by his presence and requested a trespass notice to be issued. An officer met with the subject at the police station and served him with a no trespass notice.

July 8-July 10 A victim in the 300 block of N. Elm told police that an unknown suspect entered his unlocked vehicle while it was parked at the above location. Nothing appeared to be missing.

July 9 A victim in the 200 block of Kimbell advised at 7:59 a.m. that an unknown suspect entered his unlocked vehicle while it was parked in his driveway overnight. The suspect disturbed items inside of the vehicle. Nothing

July 11 Alexander Ibarra, 24, of Villa Park, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Holly and St. Charles at around 3:54 p.m.

July 9 Luke D. Lekousis, 30, of Brookfield, was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of hypodermic needles in the 900 block of S. York at around 7:59 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a hit and run accident, a reporting officer located the unoccupied suspect’s vehicle. As the suspect approached the vehicle, he was allegedly pushing a loaded shopping cart and admitted to stealing the cart’s content, according to police. A search of the suspect’s vehicle yielded cocaine, heroin and drug paraphernalia, police said.

Suspicious circumstances July 11 A complainant at a store in the 600 block of W. North told police at around 4:03 p.m. that a suspect was seen taking the price tags off of merchandise. The suspect was issued a trespass notice and left the area.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery July 9-July 14 A vehicle was reported stolen from an auto service business in the 600 block of W. Lake.

Police said an employee reported a customer’s vehicle, which was parked on the lot for service, had been stolen. The vehicle is described as a white Ford F150 pickup truck. During the time frame of the vehicle theft, the business was the victim of a burglary where numerous vehicles’ keys were stolen from inside of the business. The vehicle was entered into LEADS as stolen.

July 13 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 1-100 block of Atrium Way at around 9:41 a.m. A complainant told police that, as he was performing landscape work, he observed a suspect remove two Echo hedge trimmers and an Echo leaf blower from the work trailer which was parked on the street. The suspects fled the area in a white Hyundai with tinted windows.

There were four suspects, according to police, each of whom were described as black males.

Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of Arlington at around 12:58 p.m. A victim told police she discovered a fraudulent charge in the amount on her credit card. The victim reported the information to her credit card company and the transaction was cancelled.

Theft was reported in the 700 block of Hawthorne at around 4:09 p.m. A victim told police he rents a bedroom and always locks his bedroom door when he leaves. On the above date, when he returned home, he noticed cash was missing from his room.

July 12 Attempted theft was reported at an auto dealership in the 700 block of W. Grand at around 4:34 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a burglar alarm at the dealership, officers found a broken garage bay window. Officers checked the interior of the business and found nothing appeared to be disturbed. A key holder responded and reviewed security video. Four suspects, between the ages of 23 and 30, were observed exiting two vehicles and walking toward the garage door. The case is pending investigation.

Attempted theft was reported at an auto dealership in the 500 block of W. Lake at

around 5:26 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a burglar alarm, officers located a broken glass panel on the southwest service door. The interior of the building was checked and nothing appeared to be disturbed. A key holder responded and reviewed the security video. Four suspects are observed entering the service area but did not take any vehicles. The case is pending investigation.

Theft was reported in the 500 block of S. Spring at around 4:47 p.m. A reporting officer spoke with the complainant who stated his employee was contacted via telephone by a subject claiming to be 7-11 IT Help Desk. The unknown suspect stated the employee needed to perform several tests on the cash register and asked her to press a series of commands. There was a total of five transactions conducted. The complainant stated the suspect was able to program the register to allow the transactions to go through.

July 11-July 12 Theft was reported in the 100 block of N. York. A reporting officer met with the victim who reported she placed her wristlet on a table next to the back door and finished completing her work. When she returned, the wallet was no longer on the table. The case is pending investigation.

April 12-July 12 Burglary was reported in the 900 block of S. Route 53. Police said an officer responded to the above address for the report of a burglary. The victim related July 12, he noticed his flat screen television had been stolen out of his unit.

July 9-July 10 Burglary was reported at an auto repair shop in the 600 block of W. Lake between the above dates. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect forced entry into the business by throwing a brick through the front window of the main lobby. Once gaining entry, the suspect removed a laptop computer and three car keys. No vehicles were disturbed.

July 9 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 300 block of Kimbell at around 7:32 a.m. Police said an unknown suspect described as a white male around 5-10, 180 pounds and 25 years old entered the victim’s unlocked vehicle while it was parked overnight in the victim’s driveway and stole a Chromebook and a pair of headphones.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 400 block of Elm at around 8:10 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect entered two unlocked vehicles which were parked on his driveway. Items in both vehicles were disturbed. A pair of sunglasses and a package of cigarettes were stolen from the automobile.

Theft was reported in the 200 block of E. First at around 2:49 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect took a package which was delivered to the front door of her apartment.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported at York High School at around 10:20 a.m. A victim told police he placed his wallet in the center console of a school-owned driver’s education vehicle. The victim had multiple students in and out of the vehicle throughout the day and was also left unlocked and unoccupied at times. The victim noticed his wallet was missing and later learned there were several unsuccessful transactions on his credit card. The case is pending investigation.

Man sentenced to 32 years for graduation party murder in Glendale Heights years to be served at 100 percent on the First-Degree Murder charge and two years to be served at 50 percent on the Aggravated Battery charge. The sentences will be served consecutively.

On June 6, 2015, at approximately 10:36 p.m., deputies with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call of a fight in progress on Prairie Avenue in unincorporated Glen Ellyn.

Upon their arrival, deputies found two victims suffering from what appeared to be stab wounds. The victims were identified as Price and Verkita Vargas.

Both Price and Vargas were transported to a local hospital where Price was

pronounced dead.

An investigation into the incident found that at some time prior to the stabbing, Jimenez went to the home on Prairie Avenue to attend a graduation party. While at the party, Jimenez approached a vehicle in which Price and Vargas were sitting, opened the front driver’s side door of the vehicle and stabbed Vargas in the abdomen as she sat in the vehicle. Price then exited the passenger side of the vehicle and approached Jimenez at which time Jimenez stabbed Price several times in the upper body. After the stabbings, Jimenez fled the scene.

An investigation led by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office led to Jimenez who was arrested without incident the following morning at a Hanover Park home. He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since his arrest.

“Five years after the violent murder of Tehavis Price, Judge McGimpsey sentenced Alberto Jimenez to a well-deserved 32 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections,” Berlin said. “The senseless murder of this young man however, will be felt by those who loved Tehavis for the rest of their lives.”

Glen Ellyn man gets 30 years for 2017 murder

On Monday, July 13, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced that James Aydelotte, 23, formerly of Glen Ellyn, had been sentenced to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) for the 2017 murder of 49-year-old John Murray of Glendale Heights.

On October 1, 2019, Aydelotte entered a blind plea of guilty to the murder in front of Judge Alex McGimpsey, who accepted his plea.

In exchange for his guilty plea, the State agreed to cap its sentencing recommendation at 45 years in the

IDOC. On Jan. 17, 2017, at approximately 6:40 p.m., DuPage County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call on the 200 block of Mildred Lane in unincorporated Glen Ellyn.

Upon their arrival, deputies found Murray injured and unresponsive.

An investigation into the matter revealed that Murray was visiting with Aydelotte when the two men got into a verbal argument. At some point in time, the argument turned physical with Aydelotte striking Murray in the face. The investigation also found that Aydelotte

stomped on Murray’s head and also cut Murray in the leg with a knife.

Murray was transported to a local hospital where he passed away from his injuries the following day.

Aydelotte was taken into custody at that time and has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail ever since on a bond of $4 million with 10% to apply.

“Nearly three-and-a-half years ago, James Aydelotte brutally murdered John Murray,” Berlin said.

“After punching him in the face, stabbing him in the leg and stomping on his head, Mr. Aydelotte

then lied to authorities claiming Mr. Murray’s injuries were due to a fall down the stairs. This afternoon, Judge McGimpsey gave Mr. Aydelotte a well-earned 30-year sentence. While the sentence handed down will not bring John back to those who loved him, perhaps it will help them in some way as they continue their lives knowing that the man responsible his murder will spend the next three decades of this life behind bars.”

Aydelotte will be required to serve 100% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

College news Wheeler chalks up numerous accomplishments Elmhurst resident John Karttunen Wheeler graduated in May 2020 with a B.S. in Accountancy from the Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

John earned University Honors (“Bronze Tablet”), which is the highest award that the University of Illinois grants to undergraduates for academic excellence. As a result, John’s name will be inscribed onto the Bronze Tablet, which will be displayed in the University Library.

John was also selected as one of the Senior 100 Honorary. This award is granted to the top 100 most outstanding seniors at the University of Illinois based on accomplishment in the classroom and profound impact to the campus through service and involvement.

Additionally, John was a James Scholar named to the Dean’s List for both the 2019-2020 fall and spring semesters.

Different strokes for different folks

My husband and I agree on many things. We share a lot of the same opinions and have been known to finish each other’s sentence or have the same thoughts at the same time.

Still, there are lots of times when we don’t see eye-to-eye, and not just because he’s 8 inches taller than me. Even after spending decades together there are things — lots of things — that we approach differently.

We’ve spent so much time together during the quarantine months that these minor differences have been more noticeable – in an interesting, contemplative and sometimes humorous way.

You might think that after all these years we’d have an agreed upon method for folding laundry. No way.

He folds towels one way (the wrong way); I do them another. The same goes for socks and T-shirts. I guess we both are too stubborn to adapt to the other’s technique.

He recently had to renew his driver’s license. When the new one came in the mail, he grabbed a scissors, cut the old one up and tossed it in the trash. I’d never cut up an old license, much less toss it in the trash. I have all my old driver’s licenses in the junk drawer in the kitchen. Something about cutting them up seems, I don’t know, wrong.

We even approach our morning showers differently. I start the water and test it and test it again (and maybe again) until it is just the right temperature. Then I get in. My husband takes a wilder, more brazen approach. He gets in the shower before ever turning on the water so he never knows if he’s going to get blasted with cold or hot or something in between.

He is a stickler for details, unless the detail involves leftover toothpaste goo in the sink. Apparently he was born with the recessive gene for toothpaste goo; it is invisible to him. I am not goo recessive. I am completely and utterly able to not only perceive toothpaste goo but to clean it up, even if it is goo from a toothbrush other than my own.

He is a unitasker. He sets out to do one thing and he does it well. I couldn’t unitask if my life depended on it. I flit about from one thing to the other and sometimes forget what I was

“Small businesses and their employees who are doing everything right during this pandemic and accepting things like staggered hours, strict occupancy requirements, or even complete closure deserve our support,” Glowiak Hilton said. “This program can help people keep their income during closures and stay in business when it is safe to fully reopen.”

Small businesses may apply for a portion of $10 million in relief through this first come, first served program. PPP allows business owners to keep employees on payroll and pay overhead expenses during closures. The extended deadline is Aug. 8.

PPP loans have an interest rate of 1% and can be fully forgiven if used for payroll, rent, utilities or mortgage interest. Participating lenders can be found on the U.S. Small Business Administrations web site at sba.gov.

On Friday, July 17, State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) released the following statement in response to the allegations against Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan: “This isn’t the first time and it certainly won’t be the last time

that Speaker Madigan has been implicated in corruption. He must resign immediately. Culture starts at the top and Speaker Madigan is standing between a government that works for Illinoisans and a government that works for political insiders.”

If you have a dishwasher (not your spouse, but the mechanical kind), you probably recognize the most putsy portion to unload is the silverware section. When I unload, I do the silverware first. Make hay while the sun shines. My husband leaves the silverware until the very end. Always put off until tomorrow what you could do today. Or maybe he’s hoping I’ll hop in and help with the forks.

When we first got married, I was a dog person and he was a cat person.

Unlike folding laundry, we were able to find some middle ground on this one. We are now both dog and cat persons. Marriage can bring about great growth sometimes.

You don’t have to be exactly the same as someone else to love them.

Thank goodness for that. My husband drinks milk; I drink water. He shuts the lights off; I forget and leave them on (Squirrel). I like lots of blankets; he kicks them off. I see hair glumps in

the drain; to him they are as invisible as toothpaste goo. Still we’ve been known to finish each other’s sentences and have the same thoughts at the same time. I call it ESP; he calls it coincidence.

And so it goes.

Reader disappointed in Independent’s coverage of DiCianni I am very disappointed in the Independent’s coverage of the controversy regarding DuPage County Board member Pete DiCianni’s recent behavior. The Elmhurst Independent’s July 9 article ”DiCianni responds to his critics” did not provide the reader with any news or information on what actually occurred. Instead, the article appears to advocate for Pete DiCianni.

For those readers who may not be aware, on June 29 Pete DiCianni, DuPage County Board Member and former mayor of Elmhurst, participated in a “Back the Blue” march outside the police station. During that march he got into a shouting match with counter protesters. In videos shared on Facebook he is seen, unmasked, shouting “Leave our Town” at protesters. A local constituent emailed him about his behavior and his written reply was “Go stick your vote in your ass.”

None of this information was provided in the Independent’s article, which starts off, unbelievably, with “Pete DiCianni had a rough time last week” and proceeds to provide DiCianni with five columns of space to justify his unacceptable behavior.

This week’s County Board meeting, including Chairman Cronin’s opening statement, is an important continuation of the story. I rely upon the Independent for good local news reporting and hope that upcoming articles will cover this issue with journalistic rigor and integrity.

If truth resided in generalizations then all cops would be bad because of what Derek Chauvin did to George Floyd, all politicians would be unprincipled because of the words that came out of Pete DiCianni’s mouth and all people who write letters to the editor have a chip on their shoulder. I don’t believe any of these generalizations, though I’ll leave it up to the reader to judge what, if anything, resides on my shoulder.

Unlike Brian, I was at the June 13 BLM demonstration. I listened to the speeches, looked at the signs and saw many different opinions and viewpoints. Kind of what you’d ex-

pect in a democracy. I saw people peacefully assembled, protesting against violence, not advocating for it. And I watched almost 1,000 people kneel and remain silent for eight minutes and 46 seconds. In those minutes each of us, in his or her own way, was able to reflect upon what is going on in this country. Our quiet thoughts and prayers were not on display for Brian to see, but they are more powerful than anything he has to complain about.

My eyes are old but they still see clearly. What I saw on June 13 was the living, breathing democracy that is the best of what this country is about.

I think we’re all better for it, a generalization I hope can sneak past Mark Twain’s admonition.

Marijuana sales create $52 million in state revenue in first six months

Since January, Illinois residents and visitors have spent nearly $240 million on legalized recreational marijuana, producing $52 million in state revenue, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

Of that, $34.7 million came from excise taxes, while $18 million came from sales taxes.

Per the law, 8 percent of that revenue will be shared with local governments, while the Illinois Department of Revenue estimates $25.9 million from excise and sales taxes will be directed to the state’s General Revenue Fund.

Also under the law, 25 percent of revenues collected from recreational cannabis sales will be reinvested through the R3 program (Restore, Reinvest and Renew) in communities that have been disproportionately impacted by the justice system, and to address substance abuse and prevention and mental health con-

cerns.

The R3 program last week announced $31.5 million in grant opportunities to organizations working in historically underserved communities across Illinois.

“Illinois has done more to put justice and equity at the forefront of this industry than any other state in the nation, and we’re ensuring that communities that have been hurt by the war on drugs have the opportunity to participate,” Gov. JB Pritzker said in a news release.

The announcement signals progress for one of the legalization bill’s three main social equity measures.

Another, which is aimed at allowing groups from areas disproportionately impacted by the war on drugs to obtain an ownership stake in the industry, has stalled amid licensing delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A lead marijuana advisor to Pritzker has said September is a goal date for when new dispensary and craft grow licenses will be released.

Another First Lady of Elmhurst Jacquelyn Haddad (1941 – 2018)

If anyone was counting, they would find that Jacquelyn Haddad’s name has appeared more times in Elmhurst newspapers over the last two decades than any other woman in our community – and always for a good cause. Jackie Haddad has made a career of being a professional volunteer. She has championed serious issues like child abuse and teenage pregnancy, which once were unspeakable topics. And for every task undertaken, she has dedicated herself completely.

Jacquelyn was the oldest child of Angeline and Benjamin Rashid. She was born on November 26, 1941 in Des Moines, Iowa where her father was in the insurance business. Jackie’s only sibling was younger brother William (12/21/48). After attending Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa, she met her future husband, Emil David Haddad, at the Midwest Federation of Syrian/Lebanese Clubs in Chicago.

The young couple was married on September 21, 1963 and moved to Elmhurst when expecting their first child, Michael, in 1965. They selected the community based on its solid reputation for having an excellent school system. (Jackie once reported that she had actually attended her first PTA meeting before she even had any children!) The Haddads had one more son, Douglas (10/22/68), and a daughter, Jackie Lynn (5/21/75).

Now Jackie Tamer, their daughter is currently serving as Elmhurst City Clerk.

Oprah Winfrey (left) was a guest of Jackie Haddad at a fundraising event for the Elmhurst Evening Woman’s Club in 1987. Haddad was well-known as an outstanding fundraiser for many local causes as well as St. Jude’s Hospital for Children.

Jaycee, serving as president of the organization for several years. He also was appointed as a Commissioner to the Elmhurst Police Department. Jackie was elected president of the Newcomers Club of Elmhurst (1970) and president of the Elmhurst Evening Woman’s Club (1974-76).

In 1976 she was appointed to Elmhurst’s United States Bicentennial Commission by Mayor Ray W. Fick, Jr. Because she had much leadership experience, Jackie became a valuable asset to the school system when elected PTA President of Jefferson School in 1982. She served again on the PTA Board of Directors for Bryan Junior High School (1985-87).

Together Jackie and Emil also were members of the Immaculate Conception Parents Club. Making sure that their own and all Elmhurst children had good educational and recreational programs was high on the list of priorities for the Haddads. Over the years they actively worked for and enthusiastically supported referendums for both the School and Park Districts.

I was first introduced to Jackie Haddad in 1986 when the City of Elmhurst was celebrating its Sesquicentennial for one whole year!

At Continental Cablevision, we televised most of the events, which included concerts, fireworks, picnics in the parks, and parades. There were so many exciting neighborhood activities planned that we could barely keep up with them. We even video-

taped a segment with Mayor Robert Quinn and a crowd of Elmhurst residents standing in front of a red caboose. It was parked along the railroad tracks in downtown Elmhurst and served as the Sesquicentennial Headquarters.

After the Mayor introduced himself and said he was from Elmhurst, everyone waved and shouted, “Good Morning, America!” I sent our 30-second videotape to the popular ABC television program of the same name, and Elmhurst instantly became famous when the segment aired nationwide.

Dick Weber was Chairman of the entire Elmhurst Celebration. Chairman of the Sesquicentennial Ball was Jackie Haddad.

“The Sesqui Ball was the opening event of the Sesqui celebration,” Weber fondly recalled. “Jackie’s organizational skills and personal recognition and involvement in the community produced a sold-out event and set the upscale tone for the forthcoming community celebration!”

Jackie had planned a black-tie formal party in the grand ballroom at Drury Lane, Oakbrook Terrace. I remember it well because we televised some of the evening’s festivities and Pat Cheffer interviewed Jackie, who wore the most beautiful gown. Jackie’s elegant gala raised $10,000 and was the talk of the town for a long time. The whole year of wonderful events marked a special time in the 150-year history of Elmhurst.

Supporting the tough causes, too

Jackie would be the first to tell you that not all of her hard work and volunteer efforts have been for such happy causes. Ever since she was a teenager she has helped raise funds for research at St. Jude Children’s Hospital. She has served on the Board of Directors (1986-90) for both MYM (Meld Young Mothers), a support group for teenage mothers, and DuPage Family Services. As an officer and member of the Elmhurst Evening Woman’s Club for more than 30 years, she helped raise thousands of dollars to benefit Family Services and the Children’s Home and Aide Society.

In 1996 Jackie volunteered to chair the committee of a new initiative for the Woman’s Club. To educate parents about an unusual form of child abuse called Shaken Baby Syndrome, Jackie and her group of women started a campaign blitz to get the word out to the public. The syndrome can cause brain damage, spinal injury, blindness or even psychological trauma.

April is Prevent Child Abuse Month, so the women urged residents to wear blue ribbons that year

to increase awareness of their cause.

Jackie even contacted Continental Cablevision and asked Pat Cheffer, host of a daily talk show Lifestyle, to address the topic. As a result of Jackie’s request, one complete program was devoted to Shaken Baby Syndrome. For four years Jackie has served as Special Emphasis Chairman for the GFWC-Illinois Federation of Women’s Clubs. It is the largest service organization of volunteer women in the state, which raises money for a variety of research groups and organizations. Their motto is “Our promise: A safe place for every child.” In her position, Jackie continued to actively raise money through the sale of stuffed animals and Blue Ribbon pins, fashion shows and other fund-raisers to help prevent child abuse.

Jackie has been associated with many organizations and agencies including the United Way of Elmhurst, Metro YWCA, Elmhurst Historical Society, Elmhurst Art Museum and the Elmhurst Junior Hospital Guild.

Elmhurst University to pilot test-optional admission applications

Elmhurst University has decided to remove the standardized test score requirement for students applying to attend in the fall of 2021, giving prospective Elmhurst students a choice about whether to submit the scores as part of their admission application.

A member of the Midwest Federation of Syrian/Lebanese Clubs, Jackie served on the Board and was Chairman of the Board (2000) for the Phoenician Club of Chicago. She belonged to both groups for more than 20 years. Jackie also worked with Voices for Illinois Children and Parents Care and Share of the Illinois Children’s Home and Aide Society, serving on the Board of Directors in 2000. She has helped the associations succeed with their many endeavors.

One activity that Jackie particularly enjoyed was the volunteer time she spent at the DuPage County Court House. There she would read to the young girls and boys who must wait in a special room called Safe Harbor.

The children feel comforted by her motherly caring, warmth and friendliness.

“Our greatest treasures in life are our children!” Jackie once remarked.

Honors and recognition Jackie Haddad’s lifelong career of volunteerism has not gone unnoticed. She has deservedly received many awards and much recognition.

In 1984, she was named Fifth District Woman of the Year by the GFWC-Illinois Federation of Women’s Clubs. The Elmhurst Jaycees presented Jackie with the 1987 Distinguished Service Award. In 1989, she was honored as Humanitarian of the Year by the Midwest Federation of Syrian/Lebanese Clubs. And again in 1998, she was selected by the Phoenician Club of Chicago as Woman of the Year. Recently Jackie has been nominated for the Metropolitan Family Services of DuPage 2000 Gold L.E.A.F. Award (Leadership and Excellence in Advocating for Families).

When Mayor Thomas D. Marcucci appointed Jackie to the Advisory Board for the Elmhurst Youth Commission, he had this to say: “Jackie Haddad is a highly respected resident who has unselfishly given of her time and expertise to numerous volunteer organizations and projects in and around the City of Elmhurst and the state of Illinois. She has proven to be a willing, enthusiastic and dedicated leader and stands as a fine example of what selfless community service is all about.”

Jackie Haddad passed away in 2018 and is still greatly missed for all of her community contributions.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a regular meeting on July 14. All seven members participated in the meeting, which took place remotely, with the board and staff members communicating online. The meeting lasted nearly 5 hours, 30 minutes.

District’s s Plan for a safe, healthy place for 5 to 8 weeks Near the end of the meeting, board members voted unanimously to approve a resolution approving “Open D205: A Plan for Health, Safety and Rigorous Learning for the 2020-21 School Year.” The plan calls for in-person instruction, five days per week, at the district’s elementary schools. The plan directs the district’s middle schools and York High School to offer a hybrid model of in-person and remote instruction in the upcoming school year, with one group of students attending school in-person on Mondays and Tuesdays, and another group attending school in-person on Thursdays and Fridays.

Under the district’s plan, a parent or guardian of any district student may choose to have their child educated remotely.

Like all other K-12 schools in Illinois, District 205 schools were closed to in-person instruction in mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The state’s schools remained closed to in-person learning for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

Public forum draws over 60 speakers about re-opening schools The beginning of the July 14 meeting featured a reading of more than 60 public comments. Board member Courtenae Trautmann read the comments, which were submitted before the meeting. A vast majority of comments were related to the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. Several of the comments urged the board to keep school buildings closed to in-person instruction at the start of the upcoming school year. Other comments encouraged the district to open and provide in-person instruction to begin the 2020-21 school year.

Before district staff members gave a presentation providing details about the plan, District 205 Board President Kara Caforio referred to the challenges the board faced as it considered how to begin the upcoming school year. Caforio asked the community for understanding and grace as the board and administration discussed options for the start of the 2020-21 school year in District 205. The district includes approximately 8,500 students and about 1,500 staff members.

District 205 Superintendent David Moyer noted that the district developed a planning committee of nearly 80 people to consider its

plans for the 2020-21 school year.

The committee included district administrators, teachers, parents, staff members, board members and community members. The committee held its first meeting on May 27.

Moyer stated that the State of Illinois did not provide much information or direction regarding the start of the school year. He said that the committee modeled its plan after the policy of the public school district in Jefferson County, Colorado.

Moyer said that District 205’s plan is based on the best information currently available. He said the plan will allow the district to pivot and be agile as events change.

Speaking about the plan, Moyer said the district’s top priority is the health and safety of all students and employees. Other main priorities of the plan include ensuring the social-emotional needs of students, providing students with a rigorous education that promotes student growth and maintaining legally sound practices that protect the district from liability.

Moyer added that the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has strongly encouraged in-person attendance in the upcoming school year, especially for children 13 and under. He said that state regulation allows for five blended remote learning days during the school year. He said the district plans to use three of those days on Aug. 19, Aug. 20 and Aug. 21. The first day of in-person classes will take place on Monday, Aug. 24. The District 205 school year was initially scheduled to begin with in-person classes on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Masks will be required for everyone inside school buildings. Social distancing, as much as possible, will also be required. A maximum of 50 people will be allowed per space inside each school.

The district will also undertake an increased level of cleaning and disinfecting in all of its schools.

IHSA has yet to announce fall sports schedule Speaking about athletics at York High School, Moyer said during the July 14 meeting that the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has not committed on what it will recommend for the fall 2020 season. Moyer said that as much as he and everyone else would like to see sports, marching band, choir and other extracurricular activities at York, it is unlikely that many of those programs will take place this fall.

Face masks to be required on buses Jen Conwell, the district’s health services supervisor, stated that in addition to being required in schools, face coverings will be required on district school buses.

Conwell said districts are allowed to have parents self-certify their children’s health. She added that the district will emphasize personal health and hygiene practices to students. There will also be signage in schools reminding students to

maintain social distancing.

If students and staff members have any symptoms of COVID-19, they are advised not to come to school, and to seek medical attention. Each district school will have an isolation area, said Conwell, who also said the district will collaborate with public health officials.

Christopher Whelton, the district’s assistant superintendent of finance and operations, stated that no more than 50 individuals will be allowed on a district school bus route at one time. Sanitization of buses will be completed daily, or between use.

Todd Schmidt, the district’s director of buildings and grounds, said the district will use electrostatic sprayers nightly to disinfect schools. Custodians will frequently disinfect—at least daily—hightouch surfaces at each school. Each district classroom will have a bottle of hand sanitizer and cleaner or disinfectant. Additional hand sanitizer

stations will be placed throughout each school building.

Schmidt said the district will ensure that the ventilation systems and fans operate properly at each school, and work to increase circulation of outdoor air inside of each school. The district will also increase the frequency of air filtration filter replacements from three times to year to every other month.

Lunch to be served in small groups Lunch at each school will take place in groups of less than 50 students. Because face coverings must be removed while eating, students will be required to maintain a 6-foot distance from others. Hand hygiene must be performed before and after consuming food. Areas where students eat will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between groups and after meals. Whelton mentioned later in the meeting that the district is exploring a variety of options related to lunch logistics,

including the potential of purchasing a tent to allow students to eat outside.

Drinking fountains in each school will be shut down. Touchless filtered water bottles will be open; they will be cleaned and sanitized regularly.

District staff members noted during the July 14 meeting that students in middle school and high school move around within the school more than elementary school students. That movement is one reason why students in grades 6-12 will experience a hybrid schedule featuring in-person and remote instruction. As mentioned earlier, any parent or guardian can choose fully remote education for his or her student.

According to the district, students and families in all District 205 schools should be prepared to fully implement remote instruction if the need arises.

Dunn named new York boys basketball coach Great grandson of Clarence D. East comes from Yorkville High School

New York boys basketball coach Mike Dunn has quite the Dukes lineage.

Dunn, recently hired to replace Vince Doran who stepped down earlier this year after a highly successful eight-year run, is the great grandson of Clarence D. East, for whom York’s football stadium on St. Charles Road is named after. East was York’s first athletic director (1939-1954) and also coached football, basketball, baseball, track and swimming. The football field was dedicated to East in 1958.

and also was the head girls volleyball coach at the school from 2007-2015 where he won a program-record 160 matches, three conference titles and a 2007 Class 3A regional title.

“Vince and I have very similar philosophies about building a program all based on a winning culture,” he said. “You win basketball games and you win in life. In terms of basketball, our philosophies are similar as well. You play great team defense and you teach to shoot the ball and

share the basketball. That’s what we patterned ourselves after at Yorkville.

That’s what made this job intriguing to me. We have similar philosophies and the program is in great shape.

Vince had all these relationships and built a great culture, which is something we did at Yorkville. I want to grow that at York and that’s what made the job attractive.”

Dunn also coached at Wheaton North and St. Francis under two individuals he played for as a stu-

dent-athlete at Wheaton North—Bob Ward and Jim Nazos. “They are two of my biggest coaching mentors,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to be on both of their staffs. I was with Jim when I was a student-teacher there and was Bob’s varsity assistant at St. Francis for three years. They both have made huge imprints on my life and have helped me with the profession of being a teacher and a coach.”

Dunn said telling his players at Yorkville of his departure “was one

of the hardest things I have done,” he said. “It’s bittersweet. I got a teaching job right out of college there at 23 years old. I have been there ever since. There are good kids there who are coachable. It takes a job like York to consider leaving, especially in these unprecedented times where nobody knows what is going to happen in the future. This is such a great opportunity for me and my family.”

Prior to coming to York, Dunn coached a total of 14 years in the Yorkville program and was the head boys basketball coach from 2015-2020. He has led teams to several conference titles and regional final appearances.

“I know Vince very well. He’s a good friend of mine from the basketball coaching ranks,” Dunn said.

“We have talked basketball for years.

He helped me with this opportunity.

He was talking about possibly stepping down and asked if I would be interested in the position. My great grandfather was York’s first AD and my grandmother ran track and field at York. I grew up in Wheaton, but always had ties to Elmhurst. I went through the interview process and this was a dream opportunity for me and my family. The school has a great tradition and there are the families ties. All of that made it much more attractive.”

Dunn, a 2001 Wheaton North graduate, was the head boys coach at Yorkville from 2015-2020. His 2017-2018 team won the Northern Illinois Big XII East Division title (Yorkville’s first conference title since 2005). This past season he led the Foxes to its first Class 4A regional final appearance. He coached a total of 14 years in the Yorkville program

Pritzker: If true, ‘he’s gonna have to resign’ Gov. JB Pritzker—who was also a subject of headlines regarding a public corruption investigation July 17—said at an unrelated news conference in Waukegan that if the allegations against Madigan are true, “He’s gonna have to resign.”

“The speaker has a lot that he needs to answer—to authorities, to investigators, and most importantly, to the people of Illinois,” Pritzker said. “If these allegations of wrongdoing by the speaker are true, there is no question that he will have betrayed the public trust. And he must resign.”

The Chicago Sun-Times reported July 17 that it had obtained documents that “show the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago has asked Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi for all emails and any other communications dating to 2012 regarding the tax break that Kaegi’s predecessor, Joseph Berrios, gave Pritzker.”

The documents requested reportedly pertained to the $330,000 property tax break that Pritzker—before he got into elected politics—re-

ceived on his Chicago mansion after he purchased a neighboring property and removed toilets to render it uninhabitable.

Pritzker’s properties were among 118 for which prosecutors sought information about property tax appeals granted during Berrios’ tenure from 2010 to 2018.

Pritzker has consistently denied wrongdoing and did so again July 17, noting neither he nor his wife had been contacted by federal authorities on the issue.

“There’s nothing new to tell you. … I learned about this from a reporter,” he said. “The facts about this matter have been public for some time and have extensively been discussed as they were in the 2018 election, and they’ve been fully aired.

And as I’ve always said, any review will show that all the rules were followed.”

Republican officials looked to tie the dueling Pritzker and Madigan headlines together.

“The announcement against ComEd and “Public Official A” and the ongoing investigation of Cook County property tax corruption are

another sad commentary on the state of our state,” House Republican Leader Jim Durkin said in a videoconference. “The deep federal investigations into the highest members of the Democratic Party and their abuse of the Cook County property tax system is finally coming to light.”

He suggested the state should reexamine laws beneficial to ComEd, and said he would like to see a special session for ethics reforms, which he accused Madigan of blocking in recent weeks.

“The allegations presented today are troubling and downright depressing,” he said. “Speaker Madigan needs to speak up on this issue. And if the allegations are true, he must resign immediately. Just as important, I hope that members of the General Assembly in the majority party, the Democrat Party, finally have the courage to stand up and demand an explanation of their leader that they have, for decades, elected to rule.”

State Sen. Tom Cullerton, a Villa Park Democrat, was indicted on embezzlement charges in August that alleged he took a salary and benefits from a labor union without doing any work.

He continues to serve in the chamber and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In September, federal agents raided the Statehouse office of then-state Sen. Martin Sandoval, D-Chicago.

On July 17, Kathy Enstrom, special agent-in-charge of the Chicago office of the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, said the office is committed to “investigating fraud and political corruption on all levels.”

“We shine bright lights in dark corners and exposed financial fraud and corporate misconduct wherever they exist,” she said. “Organizations involved in this type of criminal activity should take these actions as both a warning and opportunity— We will find you too. It is not too late to get on the right side of the law.”

I certainly hope I am wrong. I want kids out there playing, but in my personal opinion, and this is not based on any unreleased state information or other data, I think that would be a stretch for that to happen at this point.”

Moyer said during the interview last weekend that all systems were a go to return to school under the district’s recently revealed Open D205 plan.

“As of now we are continuing to go forward based on what the board approved and the planning we are having is going to be based on discussions of what was approved,” Moyer said. “We have to emphasize that we have to be flexible. Things could change between now and the first day of school—that is possible. All of this is happening in real time, nothing is set in stone.

If we think we have to move in a different direction, we will do that and I am willing to do that. I hope we can provide opportunities. We have laid out a plan to make those opportunities high-quality for students and families. If things have to change to make sure we protect everybody’s health and safety then we know that’s possible and we will make the appropriate decisions if we need to.”

Moyer also stressed the health and welfare of the district’s employees is of utmost importance. “We are trying to follow all the guidelines in front of us,” he said. “Our employees need to be safe. We care about them equally. Obviously if we can’t run

Moyer again turned his attention to the community, asking for their help in safety vigilance during the pandemic.

“The thing is in this whole situation we are in, we don’t get to call the shots,” he said. “The virus is a wicked thing and if some people, even just a few, are not following some of these basic guideline then it puts all of us in a bad spot. This is more about everybody trying to take care of everybody. A couple of misguided decisions could go a long way in what the next couple of weeks look like in terms of people potentially getting sick or staying healthy. They are saying 30 percent of the ICU admissions nationally are younger people now. Whatever it was at one point, I don’t think it is a good idea to look at it now as some people are not susceptible to getting sick. That apparently is not true. As a country we have to take a really hard look at what is going on. We have to start thinking of this as this has to become more of a collective morality and less about individual thinking and that people can have certain types of discretion in certain types of areas. It’s pretty clear that’s not working.”

The sports camp and athletics cancellations at York come on the heels of the Elmhurst Park District earlier last week acting swiftly and sending out stern warnings to local youth sports leagues that use park district facilities to enforce social distancing guidelines after it was brought to the park district’s attention that social distancing guidelines were not being followed at multiple city locations, including large groups of parents and fans packed behind backstops less than six feet away from each other and not wearing masks, and players stuffed into cramped dugouts less than six feet apart.

District 205 Superintendent David Moyer told the Independent in an interview this past weekend that two student-athletes who attended the camps are confirmed to have tested positive for the virus. However, he could not confirm the 14 number as accurate.

“We are working really hard to do our best to open school in the fall to as much in-person instruction as possible,” Moyer said. “The only way to do that is to do everything we can to keep everybody safe and healthy. We are not going to take any chance that any of our actions are going to lead to a significant spike that affects the health of our students, faculty and staff members.

“You hear about what is happening with these frat houses and you have heard some of the stories in Alabama and Texas. I have not heard of people intentionally doing things of that nature, but I also am not convinced that everybody is taking the appropriate precautions either.”

Moyer lauded the efforts of York coaches for adhering to social distancing and other COVID-19 guidelines last week during these camps. Various photos on York sport-specific social media channels show student-athletes wearing masks during workouts and keeping proper distance from teammates.

“Our coaches did a really good job of implementing the expectations,” he said. “That being said, you can do that and minimize the risk, but you cannot completely eliminate risk.

Because of that, we felt this was the most appropriate decision given the information we had available to us. I give nothing but kudos to our administration and coaches for doing everything expected of them to allow for an opportunity to participate while being safe. I don’t

question any of that. Nobody in any link of the chain has been anything but serious in prioritizing safety.”

Moyer implored community members to strengthen their resolve when it comes to following COVID-19 guidelines. “If we want to return to normalcy, it’s a collective community responsibility to take care of each other,” he stressed. “If in-person instruction is a priority and everybody’s health is a priority and we want students to be able to return to the various things they love as soon as possible, that’s not going to be possible unless everybody does their part. We have a responsibility to each other. We can make all the internal plans we want as a school district to provide for in-person instruction, but we will not be able to keep our people safe if some things outside our control creep into the equation. There is only so much we are able to do. I think people have to make good personal decisions if they are returning from travel, if they are thinking about the different types of social activities they are choosing to participate in. We have seen the way this goes and how it creeps along and creeps along and then once it blows up it can go very fast. And once that happens, it’s very difficult to turn it around. People have to be careful.”

With an Aug. 9 target date to resume athletic activity at York and the start of high school football practices the following day on Aug. 10, Moyer expressed some concern regarding the status of high school sports in the fall.

“You want kids to be in the best shape possible to prevent injuries,” he said. “If they are sick, they are not going to be able to play. We thought this was the most appropriate decision to make. The IHSA has not come out and tipped its hand to any great degree at this point.

“It is very concerning that we are back in person in four weeks and these large events are taking place with this careless, joking attitude toward trying to get the virus. The greater worry is that there probably is a greater spread potential given these events are going on. It’s concerning for the staff and faculty and their families, and the families in the community that are making the decision to send their kids back to school to see that perhaps not the whole community is taking things seriously.

“The school district is working its hardest to have in-person learning.

If families and parents are not monitoring what their children are participating in or their not interested in it, that’s a concern for the whole community. If the whole community is not monitoring what is going on with their children, especially teenagers, things can get out of control pretty quickly.”

The other source added: “It seems dangerous when the community doesn’t have this under control and kids are holding these parties.

And if parents are involved with this and know about these parties happening, that’s awful. You are putting everybody at risk, especially teachers and staff members who have to go into these buildings a little less than five weeks away here.

If you want school to happen, get this under control.”

its level of personalized instruction in its remote education during the 2020-21 school year. Additionally, staff members need more professional learning experiences, as well as more resources to assist struggling students.

Increased community engagement Bev Redmond, the district’s executive director of communications and public relations, told the board that the Open D205 plan calls for increased community engagement for district parents, staff members and the community at large. The district’s website—elmhurst205. org—now includes a microsite called OpenD205 that will convey information about several issues, including remote and hybrid learning plans, school schedules and meal distribution. The microsite will also include a list of answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs).

Redmond said the district will continue to provide information to its stakeholders through its regularly scheduled E-newsletters, as well as through a variety of social media outlets and voice and text messages.

Near the end of the administration’s presentation of the Open D205 plan, Moyer reiterated that information will continue to evolve

over the next few weeks.

Discussing the plan, board members thanked the administrators and everyone else who contributed to developing the Open D205 guidelines. Board members noted the challenges in having one plan that satisfies parents with a variety of perspectives. Several board members said they appreciated that the plan is flexible and includes the option of allowing parents to choose strictly remote education for their child.

What happens if someone tests positive Responding to board members’ questions about what would happen if a student or staff member tested positive for COVID-19, Conwell stated there are protocols in place that the district would follow. She said a school would not typically identify a positive case, but would be notified by a parent, health department or medical provider. Conwell said that if the district is notified of a positive case, the district is required to report it to the DuPage County Health Department. Conwell added that the ability to isolate and quarantine is essential to eliminate the further spread of COVID-19.

The board will hold its next meeting on Aug. 11.
