At the July 12 meeting of the District 205 School Board, Todd Schmidt, the district’s director of facilities, provided an update on various construction projects in the district, especially noting that the final touches were being put on the new Lincoln Elementary School building.

Schmidt said the new furniture is in the building, which will be ready for the start of the upcoming 2022-23 school year.

There will be a ribbon cutting at the new Lincoln Elementary School at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Members of the public will have an opportunity to see the new school.

Schmidt also noted that the Field Elementary School building has been completely demolished. The meeting included a presentation of a video that showed drone footage of the demolished building, which is being replaced with a new school.

At the District 205 School Board meeting on July 12, students from Field and Hawthorne elementary schools were honored for their placement in the “Celebrate America Fifth Grade Creative Writing Contest.” Elin Seiler, a student at Field, won first place, while Brenner Harges and Rowan Hope, both students at Hawthorne, won second and third place, respectively. Elin also went on to win the national competition. The students submitted a written response to the prompt “Why I Am Glad America is a Nation of Immigrants” or “What Does it Mean to be a Welcoming Nation?” The entries are judged on the basis of theme, presentation, creatively and message. EE Health: What to know about omicron’s more transmissible subvariants SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has mutated into multiple strains (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, etc.), each carrying a slightly different twist to its method of infection.

Omicron, a variant first identified in South Africa in November 2021, has been spreading rapidly around the world and across the U.S., faster than any previously known strain of the coronavirus.

Omicron’s rapid spread allowed it to mutate several times. The strain has fractured into subvariants, each more transmissible than the original.

As of July 2022, omicron variant BA.5 is causing a wave of cases across the United States.

The omicron variant mutations have allowed it to escape some of the immunity from vaccines and from past infections. Vaccines still protect against infection, just not as much as they did against past variants.

Roselle man accused of shooting woman in the head at restaurant On Sunday, July 17, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Roselle Chief of Police Steve Herron announced that bond had been denied for a Roselle man charged with shooting an innocent woman in the head early Saturday morning at a Roselle restaurant.

Jamie Quijano, 22, of the 200 block of Walter Drive in Roselle appeared in bond court where Judge Susan Alvarado denied bond. Quijano has been charged with one count of attempted first degree murder (Class X Felony), aggravated battery with a firearm (Class X Felony) and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm (Class 1 Felony).

On Saturday, July 16 at approximately 12:29 a.m., Roselle police officers responded to a call of shots fired at Bulldog Ale House located at 394 Irving Park Road. Upon their arrival, officers found a female in her 20’s with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention.

Following an investigation into the shooting, it is alleged that an employee and a male patron, later identified as Quijano were arguing. It is alleged that following the argument, Quijano began walking toward the exit and then turned around and began firing into the restaurant. It is alleged Quijano fired his pistol 18 times with one shot striking the victim in her head. It is further alleged that after the shooting, Quijano fled the scene on foot. Quijano was taken into custody a short time later at his home. Officers recovered a pistol and a magazine on the couch of the residence as well as two live 9 mm rounds, one in Quijano’s pants pocket and another in a satchel he had been carrying.

“Judge Alvarado’s denial of bond this morning sends the message that senseless, unprovoked acts of violence as alleged in this case will most certainly not be tolerated in DuPage County,” Berlin said.

Quijano’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 15, for arraignment in front of Judge Margaret O’Connell. If found guilty, Quijano faces between 31 years to life in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Lombard man accused of hijacking vehicle from apartment complex On Saturday, July 16, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced that bond has been set for a Lombard man accused of threatening a woman and hijacking her car from her apartment complex parking lot.

Bryan Church, 33, of the 2700 block of S. Highland Ave. in Lombard, appeared at a bond hearing Friday afternoon where Judge Susan Alvarado set bond at $1 million with 10% to apply. Church has been

charged with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking, a Class X Felony and one count of aggravated battery to a police officer, a Class 2 Felony.

On Tuesday, July 5 at approximately 11:10 a.m., the female victim went to the parking garage of her apartment complex on Highland Avenue and entered her car. It is alleged while the victim was in the driver’s seat of her car, a male, later identified as Church, approached the vehicle, opened the front passenger door of

the car and sat down inside the car. It is alleged that Church told the victim he needed a ride and when the victim refused, Church allegedly told the victim to get out of the car or he was going to slit her throat. The victim exited her car and Church allegedly got into the driver’s seat of the Honda and drove away.

About five minutes later, Lombard police officers responded to a call of a disturbance in the 700 block of E. Butterfield Road, where Church was found in an office building with

a backpack. It is alleged that as officers attempted to talk to Church, he pushed and kicked an officer. Church was placed under arrest. It is alleged that officers found two knives and a BB gun inside Church’s backpack.

Church’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 8, for arraignment in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.

Police said a reporting officer responded to a neighbor dispute where Dwyer was harassing the victim’s dog and threatening the victim. A reporting officer located Dwyer, who became aggressive and began to fight with officers, according to police.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement, criminal trespassing July 12 Officers responded to an area near Route 83 and I-290 at 8:56 p.m. for a report of a delayed road rage incident. Upon arrival, the complainant related due to a road rage incident, the suspect threw an unknown object at her vehicle causing a dent. The reporting officer attempted to contact the suspect with no results. An investigation is pending.

July 11 A victim in the 900 block of S. Chatham told police at 8:25 a.m. that an unknown person(s) had thrown a rock at the rear windshield of his vehicle.

Police said officers spoke with Massey, who gave the officer a false name. Massey was found to have two valid warrants from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, according to police.

July 7 A reporting officer responded to a business in the 100 block of N. York at 11:47 a.m. for a report of a threat. The complainant relayed while making customer’s orders, a driver became impatient while waiting and caused a disturbance before leaving the store. The complainant reported this behavior.

July 9 Zoey Van Jones, 62, of Elmhurst, was charged with criminal trespassing to a building at Edward-Elmhurst Hospital at 8:45 p.m. According to police, a complainant reported Van Jones entered the hospital without a medical reason to do so after being given a no-trespass order from the location.

July 11-July 12 A complainant in the 400 block of N. York related his State Farm branch has received threatening voicemails and emails from a former client. The reporting officer attempted to contact the suspect with no results.

Route 83 at 11:04 p.m. A reporting officer met with the complainant who reported the suspects, who were not guests at the hotel, were there all day and began to cause a disturbance in the lobby. Both suspects were served a no-trespass notice for the business and left the area.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery July 11 Theft by deception was reported in the 300 block of N. Maple at 3:44 p.m. A victim reported sending money to an unknown suspect he met on a dating app. The suspect asked for more money but the victim refused and ceased contact.

April 22-July 11 Theft of services was reported at an auto dealership in the 700 block of W. Grand. The complainant, a service manager with the dealership, related the suspect rented a vehicle from them on April 16 for six days and has not returned the vehicle. The dealership has attempted to make contact with the offender with no results. The reporting officer attempted to contact the suspect with no results. An investigation is pending.

July 10 Burglary was reported at a jewelry store in the 500 block of W. North at 5:11 a.m. Police said officers observed the front glass door shattered. The business owner arrived on scene, reviewed video footage and determined one silver certificate and two items of Peruvian currency were taken.

July 8 Retail theft was reported at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North at 2:51 a.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect exited the store with several bottles of alcohol for which he did not pay. The suspect was last seen heading southbound on York.

Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of Glenview at 1:03 p.m. A complainant related an unknown suspect(s) cashed fraudulent checks against her bank account.

July 7 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 500 block of S. Spring at 5:43 p.m. A victim reports an unknown suspect described as a white male entered the store, took two bottles of wine and left without paying.

June 17-July 5 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of Fellows. A victim reports that an unknown suspect(s) had made several fraudulent charges on his debit card between the above dates. The victim has since canceled his card and has re-

ceived a new one.

June 16 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of S. Arlington at 11:28 a.m. A victim related an unknown suspect(s) used her personal information to open a fraudulent account.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported one incident of a catalytic converter being removed and stolen from a vehicle at the following location: in the 800 block of N. York at 8:29 a.m.

Elmhurst man charged with hate crime

Allegedly spray-painted swastikas on others’ property

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Interim Chief of Police Michael McLean announced last week that an Elmhurst man has been charged with spray-painting swastikas on the homes and veJoel Jexie hicles of several Elmhurst residences.

Joel Jexie, 25, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Michael Reidy set bond at $100,000 with 10 percent to apply. Jexie has been charged with three counts of hate crime, a Class 4 felony and one count(s) of criminal damage to property, a Class 4 felony.

On July 9, the Elmhurst Police Department received a call regarding vandalism that occurred on Oak Street. Upon their arrival, officers observed swastikas painted on two garage doors of the home as well as on a Lexus ES 350.

Three days later, on July 12, Elmhurst police officers received another call regarding a swastika that was spray-painted on a VW Atlas located on Crockett Avenue. Through the course of their investigation into the matter, officers were not only able to identify Jexie as a suspect in the two cases but also able to identify him as a suspect in an April incident where a swastika was spray-painted on a home on Walnut Street. Jexie was taken into custody yesterday afternoon from his home without incident.

“The allegations against Mr. Jexie are very disturbing and have been charged accordingly,” Berlin said. “Hate crimes have no place in a civilized society and the allegations against Mr. Jexie in no way represent the welcoming, good-hearted people of DuPage County. I thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their work on this case.”

“I must thank the members of the Elmhurst community who partnered with the police department on this successful investigation,” McLean said. “The residents that provided home security video and promptly called 911 when they observed suspicious activity were crucial to solving these offensive crimes.”

Jexie’s next court appearance is scheduled Friday, Aug. 5 for arraignment in front of Judge Reidy.

A&W Root Beer coming to Addison Restaurant to hire 30 people

Last week, the Addison Independent caught up with Oak Brookbased commercial real estate developer Lee Fry, who is busy with the construction of a new A&W Root Beer restaurant in Addison, which he expects to open by mid-August.

“We’re under construction in Addison in the Walmart Supercenter— in the spot that was formerly a Burger King, so we’re right in the middle of everything,” Fry told the Independent. “It’s the second driveway off Rohlwing Road, you have to pass us to get to Sam’s Club.”

The site was chosen in part be-

cause they wanted to have a drivethrough.

“The drive-through is a significant portion of our business,” Fry said.

“But it requires more land for ‘stacking’ cars.”

The restaurant not only will be in a good location, but will be a tasty option for people planning picnics and parties who need catering.

“We will be hiring about 30 people,” Fry said. “We plan to hire local teens and seniors to work in the restaurant so people will recognize the employees and provide a good solid family experience.”

Bernardine Dramm, 94 Bernardine Louise (Oates) Dramm of Oak Brook went home to be with the Lord on July 11, 2022, at the age of 94. She was born on September 27, 1927, in Oak Park, the only child of Lester and Louise Oates, her loving parents.

Bernardine graduated with a degree in English from Rosary College in River Forest. Shortly after that, she met the love of her life and her beloved husband of 66 years, John E. Dramm of Elmhurst, a World War II Veteran. Bernardine, or Bernie as she was known by many, was an amazing mother and grandmother and an avid bridge player. Not a day went by when Bernie didn’t talk about how much she loved her children, grandchildren, family and friends. Arguably her family and friends were her most cherished life achievement.

• Funding for SAT prep courses approved The board also voted unanimously to approve spending of not more than $78,100 on Kaplan SAT Preparation Courses for York High School junior students. Almost all of that spending is paid for by federal grants, with $480 paid for by departmental funds. Each year, students in the 11th grade take the SAT Exam as required by the state of Illinois. District 205 has worked with Kaplan to customize SAT preparation courses for the members of York’s Class of 2024.

There are currently 713 students in that class. The preparation courses include 18 hours of live virtual instruction on test strategies and content review, one live virtual proctored practice test, 16 hours of video content via the SAT Channel, eight practice tests, 1,000 test-like questions provided through QBank, four SAT prep books and six months of access to online resources.

The district’s plan for the SAT preparation courses calls for the district to pay all of the preparation costs for students with an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), students

from low-income backgrounds, and students identified as English Learners. An additional group of students would be offered a reduced rate of $240. The Kaplan SAT preparation courses would be available to all other York juniors at a cost of $300.

While the 2023 SAT test (for high school students who graduate in 2024) will involve pencil and paper, the SAT will shift to a digital format in 2024.

Instead of using pencils and paper, students will take the test on a laptop or tablet. The standardized tests will still be conducted at a school or testing site.

Board accepts tentative agreement with SEIU Board members also voted unanimously to accept the tentative agreement between the district and the SEIU Bargaining Unit that will go into effect for a four-year term, from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2026.

Wrong ride, right attitude

“Life is a lousy spectator sport.”

– John R. Powers When it comes to thrill-seeking, I’ve always embraced being one of the wimpiest of the wimpy. Why ride a roller coaster when you can watch all the fun from the sidelines?

Rhetorical question, to be sure.

Let’s just say I’ve been at peace with being a sidelines gal.

My family is the opposite of wimpy when it comes to thrills.

They think nothing of putting their life on the line if it means riding roller coaster that defies gravity by rolling and turning and spilling its riders upside down—in the dark.

My husband was the biggest thrill seeker of us all. When it came to lifedefying feats on rides named with words like “Wild Venom,” “Mission Death” and “Monster Intimidator,” he was like a kid in a candy store.

My kids all inherited his lack of judgment when tackling wild rides.

In other words, they love them.

Because I love what my family loves, exciting amusement park excursions have always been one of our favorite family activities.

We had our latest adventure earlier this year when we visited not one, but four, theme parks—all part of the great Mickey empire. This was our first trip without my husband, and I went in with an open heart, open mind, a smile on my face and a tissue or two in my pocket.

The first day of the trip was uneventful, thrill-wise. The biggest baddest ride in the park was closed down for maintenance. I said a prayer of thanks and explored animal adventures with my grand babies.

The second morning of our trip, I was feeling confidant. I was ready to stand in long lines. I was ready to practice patience. I was ready for the heat—to a degree. I was ready for the rides—to a degree. I was ready to go fast, take a sharp turn or two and maybe even climb and descend a hill with a quick drop. Just not anything crazy like going upside down in the dark. That feat of valor could be saved for another day—like maybe tomorrow, or maybe the day after that.

When you enter a busy amusement park on a busy morning, it’s imperative to have a plan. In order to minimize wait time and maximize ride time you need to know exactly where you want to go and you have to be willing to run to get there.

On that morning of the second day, my boys had it all figured out and sprinted to a ride that featured Aerosmith and music and some sort of roller coaster. I thought I remembered riding said coaster in the past so I confidently joined them in line (huffing and puffing after our run).

The wait was 45 minutes. No biggie!! Minutes (hours, even) in park time waiting lines—or queues as they are known to us insiders—are not the same as time outside the park.

Time outside the park—it is linear.

Time inside the park? It doesn’t really exist, except for opening in the morning, closing at night and parade times throughout the day. Otherwise, time is a non-entity.

Back to our first ride of the second morning: we were 43 minutes into the queue when we heard a woman directly in front of us lamenting because she was afraid of spinning upside down.

Me (thinking I knew the ride): “This doesn’t go upside down!”

Two teen boys in front of us laughed and quickly replied, “Yes it does!”

I looked at my own boys, dumbfounded. They just smiled, almost daring me to back out at this point. I was 43 minutes invested for goodness sakes, and all in. I boarded that ride and didn’t look back (or forward, for that matter) Yes, we did go upside down. More than once. More than twice. (Yikes!)

Yes, I did close my eyes practically the whole time. But I did it! And, I survived.

My life has changed in the last year and a half, and that means I’ve changed as well. I used to be OK standing on the sidelines. I’ve since decided life might be better spent as a participant, rather than a spectator.

You only get the chance to do this once. I’m going to make the most of it. Bring on the roller coasters!

Conroy measure would prohibit FOIDs for minors until age 24 Would apply to those who are a threat to harm themselves, others

Minors who attempt or cause physical harm to themselves or others would be unable to receive approval for a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID) until age 24 under a proposal introduced Friday by state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Elmhurst.

“The horrific Highland Park parade shooting was carried out by a young individual who had raised red flags with his behavior in recent years and should have never possessed nor had easy access to a weapon of war,” she said. “If you have a clear history of violent behavior and recklessly endangering others, you should not receive easy access to guns just because you turned 18. We have to better consider past incidents and understand that too many of these individuals do not possess the maturity nor

responsibility to handle a weapon.”

Conroy’s House Bill 5766 outlines that minors who attempt or cause physical self-harm or harm to another are subject to denial or revocation of a FOID card. Until age 24, such individuals are presumed to be a person whose mental condition is of such a nature that it poses a clear and present danger. Additionally, the proposal provides that a physician, clinical psychologist, qualified examiner, law enforcement official, school administrator or other person aware of a minor’s violent incident shall report the incident to the Department of Human Services.

“Time and again, we are witnessing tragedies carried out by individuals who were outwardly expressing a desire for violence,” Conroy said.

County provides $2.8 million in relief to hotel, tourism industry

DuPage County voted last week to provide $2.8 million to the DuPage Convention and Visitors Bureau (DVCB) to provide support to local hotels that have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The County Board will provide $2 million for a hotel relief program, $750,000 for a joint business attraction and marketing program through DCVB and Choose DuPage, and $50,000 for a seven-county regional tourism program. All funds are provided through the fed-

These up and coming entrepreneurs have it covered. York HS students (from left) Mnetisi Mndzebele, Josiah Deshabathini, Aidan Wicklow, Mason Balfanz, and David Loch proudly hold a $3,150 check as a sign of a successful year long Business Incubator Honors class at York. The students came up with a prototype aptly named Steezy Cleats that athletes can wear over their cleats, allowing them to walk on hard surfaces without damaging the expensive athletic shoes or even dirtying indoor sites. The five young men gathered materials needed to create the prototype, even sewing and gluing as needed. After pitching their idea and competing against other student entrepreneurs during multiple presentations, Business Incubator community board members selected Steezy Cleats as the winning business. The winning students will continue to grow their company using the money they won and have already garnered an LLC status for their budding business.

’22 York grad earns ‘life changing money’ for college as Evans Scholar Bobby Rowland heads to U. of Colorado on full scholarship

During the five years that recent York High School grad Bobby Rowland has been a caddie at Butterfield Country Club in Oak Brook, he’s proven himself to possess four criteria that have earned him a life-changing honor and opportunity: a strong caddie record, excellent academics, outstanding character and a demonstrated financial need.

A newly-awarded Evans Scholar, Rowland will attend University of Colorado in the fall and pursue a degree in finance.

Following a selection interview in February, Evans Scholarship officials informed Rowland he earned the coveted scholarship valued at more than $120,000 over four years, which includes full housing and tuition for deserving caddies.

“I knew that if I got this scholarship, a large burden would be lifted off of my parents’ shoulders as well as my own,” said Rowland.

Rowland was one of more than 300 recipients nationwide to be named an Evans Scholar this past school year and credits his father for getting him interested in not only golf but caddying as well.

“When I was in 7th grade, my dad found out that I was old enough to caddy at Butterfield Country Club.

After my first loop, I knew caddying was the perfect job for me,” he said.

“When I got home that day, my dad told me… the Chick Evans Scholarship awards a full ride to any school that accepts the scholarship. I knew I needed to work as hard as possi-

ble to give myself the best chance at that scholarship.”

A high honor roll student, Rowland did just that at York and in the community. He graduated with a 3.7 GPA and scored a 29 on his ACT. An Elmhurst Evolution Ultimate Frisbee club team member and a social golfer, Rowland also made time for service including helping out at Feed My Starving Children several times. He also set up a pop-up shop with his ultimate frisbee teammates, where lower income households could get free toys and household equipment. He and a few friends also helped Rowland’s mom, a preschool teacher, set up her classroom - a volunteer project that took several days.

“Bobby is an impressive young man,” said Jeff Harrison, senior vice president of the Western Golf Association/Evans Scholars Foundation. “Through his hard work and determination, Bobby will have the opportunity to realize his dream of a college education.”

Undoubtedly proud to be named a scholar, one of Rowland’s favorite caddying memories goes back to his first day on the job.

“I remember when the man [I was caddying for] told me, ‘You did a great job today young man.’ I felt very proud and was determined to be the best caddy that I could be.

“Not only does [the Evans Scholarship] give life-changing money towards my education, but it also provides me with a network of great people who love to support each other.”

The Western Golf Association, headquartered in Glenview, has supported the Chick Evans Scholarship Program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930, when fame Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. founded the program. Currently, more than 1,000 scholars are enrolled at 21 universities across the nation.

Library celebration is ‘Cherry on Top’ of a summer of reading To celebrate the conclusion of its Summer Reading program, the Elmhurst Public Library invites families to a Summer Celebration on Saturday, July 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., an outdoor party with crafts, games, and other food-themed activities. The event will be outside on the south lawn of the library against the beautiful backdrop of Wilder Park, directly adjacent to the Library.

All summer long, participants logged their reading and picked up prizes at the Library or off-site, at local schools. The children’s Summer Reading theme, “Reading Is So Delicious,” inspired a whimsical transformation of the Kids’ Library, including food-related décor such as giant pieces of candy suspended from the ceiling and faux farmstands like “Peter’s Pickled Veggies.” Programming also tied in with the theme. For instance, popular events attended by kids included Lettuce Make Snacks Together, Candy Science, and Sew a Breakfast Plushie, as well as a Community Food Drive, done in collaboration with the Elmhurst History Museum, to support the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry.

Summer Music at Bethel will feature the cello sonatas of Beethoven in a two-concert celebration, live and in person at Bethel United Church of Christ on Sunday, July 24 at 5 p.m. Artists featured are cellist Timothy Archbold and Music at Bethel artistic director pianist Jeffrey Panko.

The five cello sonatas of Beethoven are a showcase of the development of Beethoven’s compositional style from his early to late period writings, as the first was written in 1796, and the last in 1815.

York football schedule released Dukes to host five egular-season games at Clarence D. East Field, starting Aug. 26

Fans of the York football team will have ample opportunity to see the Dukes at home in action this season. The Dukes will play five of their nine regular-season games at home at Clarence D. East Field. York kicks off the 2022 season Friday, Aug. 26 at 7:30 p.m. against Schaumburg in a non-conference game.

York then heads to Berwyn on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. for the first of two West Suburban Conference crossover games on the slate, this one against WSC Gold entrant Morton.

The Dukes then return home for two games to kick off WSC Silver Division action. York hosts Proviso West on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and then welcomes Downers Grove North to Elmhurst on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m.

York plays its only Saturday game of the season on Sept. 24 at 1:30 p.m. at Lyons Township. The Dukes are then on a quick turnaround Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. when perennial power Glenbard West comes to town for a WSC Silver game.

York hits the road in Week 7 when it travels to Hinsdale to face defending WSC Silver Division champion Hinsdale Central Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m.

York finished second in the conference last year.

The Dukes traditional neighborhood matchup against defending WSC Gold champion Willowbrook takes place Friday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Elmhurst. York wraps up the 2022 regular season on the road Friday, Oct. 21 for a 7 p.m. game at Oak Park-River Forest.

The Dukes, under the direction of coach Mike Fitzgerald, are coming off a 2022 season where they went 8-2 and reached the state playoffs for the first time since 2011.

A quick look at York’s opponents: Schaumburg went 2-7 last season, while Morton was 3-6 and Proviso West was 1-8. Downers Grove North went 4-5 — meaning the Dukes’ first four opponents had sub-.500 records a year ago. Lyons Township went 5-5 and made the state playoffs, while Glenbard West was 8-3 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

Hinsdale Central was 9-2 and went to the second round as well. Willowbrook was 8-4 and also advanced to the state quarterfinals in Class 7A. Finally, Oak Park-River Forest went 4-5. Elmhurst 12U team wins Illinois Dist. 10 Championship

Elmhurst 12U Little League beat River Forest 4-3 in the District 10 Championship game on Thursday night at Berens Park. Dominic Ramos started things off on the mound going three innings, followed by Carter Roach two and two-thirds innings with Nate Patterson coming in to record the final out in the top of the 6th. The offense was led by Xander Escarpita (3 hits), Dominic Ramos (2 hits and walk), Carter Roach (1 hit with 2 walks), Joey Solberg (1 hit and walk) and Devin Hopkins (2 walks). The boys from Elmhurst played great defense all night to hold off River Forest. Elmhurst dedicated its championship win to Elizabeth “Beth” Sartore, longtime resident of Elmhurst, who passed away earlier in the week on July 12. Beth’s son, Adam attended the game and helped cheer the boys to victory.

Next up for Elmhurst was Sectionals at East Side Little League on Saturday, July 16. Dukes pack a full schedule into 3 1/2 weeks

York boys basketball coach Mike Dunn isn’t concerned about wins and losses in the summer. His Dukes squad played between 25-30 games spaced out between the Geneva summer league, as well as tournaments in Batavia (Hoop Mountain), Riverside-Brookfield (NCAA live event) and Ridgewood (NCAA live event).

“We had a good summer,” he said.

“We improved throughout. Summer is always a work in progress. We continued to improve throughout the 3 1/2 weeks we were together. We don’t keep track of wins in the summer. We tell the kids we want them to improve not only individually, but as a program. We were very compet-

York is not lacking for returning contributors with AJ Levine, Adam Hardek, Braden Richardson, and Alex Sherman all back. “We have some good kids coming back from last year,” Dunn noted. “AJ Levine had a really nice summer for us.

Adam Hardek started for us last year and did well. Braden Richardson is a junior now and Alex Sherman also started for us last year and had a good summer. With some of our kids such as AJ, Adam and Braden, they were young and inexperienced last year and now they are experienced and have been more assertive and aggressive in scoring the basketball. We need those guys to do that and replace our senior class that was a good class for us.”

York also utilized 12 camp days and invited Lake Park, Minooka and Geneva over to take part in some program practices.

“I thought the summer ended up exactly how we wanted it to,” Dunn said. “We played 25-30 games, practiced with those 12 camp days and then brought in Lake Park, Minooka and Geneva and practiced together.

Overall, summer is a lot. It’s very intense for those 3 1/2 weeks. Every other night you play and on weekends you are playing. It was a lot. We have kids coming back, and I also like our group that won 20 as a sophomore team last year. They are obviously relishing in new roles that we are asking our kids to do. We want them to play hard, play together and run our system offensively and defensively and execute it.”

Dunn also applauded the play of Ryan Pechous, who won the Duke Pride award for the summer that honors a player that displays traits such as hustle, being a good teammate and leadership, among others.

“Ryan is a kid I thought had a really nice summer for us,” he said. “He does some really good stuff defensively and has a very good basketball IQ. I thought he had a really nice summer.”

Levine won the most improved player award for the summer. “AJ has improved from being the sixth man as a sophomore to probably being our leading scorer this summer,” Dunn pointed out. “He had a really nice camp.”

Dunn is looking forward to getting back to business later this summer.

“We’ll come back after Labor Day and start our preseason stuff in the weight room and with some open gyms,” he said. “We know it will be another challenging year in our league and we played in two really good tournaments at Palatine (Thanksgiving) and our Christmas tournament (Jack Tosh Holiday Classic), which is as loaded as it has ever been and we’re excited about that.”

New teams in the 32-team Tosh field this year include Glenbrook South, Waubonsie Valley, Glenbard North and Yorkville. Dunn was the former boys head coach at Yorkville

IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team excited about summer progress Geiger, McDonough lead the way for Knights

IC Catholic Prep girls basketball coach Todd Fisher was more than pleased with how his squad progressed during the recently completed summer season “It was a lot of fun,” he said. “We went hard in June and now we will take the month of July off. We did some open gyms, held our grade-school camp, and had a great turnout. It was a very competitive month. We went over a lot of things. There was a lot of learning.

We implemented some new things.

We look forward to getting everything going again when the season starts.”

The Knights had no formal game activity in the form of league games, tournaments, or shootouts. “The kids are very busy in the summer,” Fisher noted. “Nancy (IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball coach Kerrigan) has her volleyball stuff in July and cross-country ramps up. Quite a few kids do travel softball. June was very busy. We just wanted to implement some new things and let the kids get a lot of shots off and work on their games. The progress we saw was good. Our last talk with the kids was to tell them to take some time off and think back to how we ended last year. We saw that hunger to keep going. It’s still there today. The kids are looking forward to getting going again.”

Geiger was a third-team all-state selection. “Those two girls will have very good junior years,” Fisher said. “Kelsey worked on her 3-point shot and has been very consistent. Allie has worked on her overall game. Those two kids really stand out and some of our younger kids have stood out.”

Others having strong summers for the Knights include the likes of sophomore guard Grazi Narsisi, junior Mae Bigane and sophomore Maura Grogan. “We had a lot of other kids who looked good,” Fisher said. “The kids were very competitive from the incoming freshmen to the kids who earned postseason accolades last year. It was great. If you look at who we graduated it was Claire Wagner and Fran Cook was our other starter.

If you look at who we have coming back, the nucleus is there. We have a young nucleus with Kelsey and Allie both being juniors. Mae is a junior and Maura and Grazi are sophomores. We’ll see where we end up come October and November, but there is a very good nucleus and it’s a group that has had success with other sports such as volleyball, soccer, and cross country. These are kids who are used to winning and used to success.
