It’s time! Time for the much-anticipated 5th Annual Superior Ambulance Elmhurst Cycling Classic, which takes place Friday, July 21.

The neighborhood surrounding Elmhurst College will be transformed into a professional racecourse. Later in the evening, there will be Pro-Am Racing Under The Stars.

Guests line up for some tasty barbecue on Saturday, July 15 at Elmhurst Toyota, which hosted the annual BBQ for the Troops to raise funds for the USO. It was a beautiful day for the event which included military personnel on hand as well as vehicles kids could climb on. There was a band, a bounce house and giant inflatable slide for the kids, and a memorial for the troops. Kurt Schiele, owner of the dealership, hoped to raise $20,000 on Saturday. While it’s too early to say how much was raised, Elmhurst Toyota always raises more money than all the other participating Toyota dealerships. More photos inside this issue.

On Monday, July 10, Kay McKeen, executive director of SCARCE, or School & Community Assistance for Recycling & Composting Education, a program funded by DuPage County, gave a presentation to the Public Works & Buildings Committee (PWB), a subgroup of Elmhurst City Council. PWB Committee Chair 6th Ward Alderman Jim Kennedy was absent from the meeting, so it was led by Vice Chair Marti Deuter (1st Ward).

Other PWB members are 2nd Ward Alderman Norm Leader and 3rd Ward Alderman Michael Bram, who made an important point at the beginning of the meeting.

“Because we have press here and want to get information to public, I believe we should make the point that this endeavor is in the planning stages,” he said. “It has a hefty price tag, so I think the community should know that this is still in discovery. It’s going to take a lot more discussion.”

It was noted that the City’s current waste removal contract remains in force through March 2018.

Besides Committee members and City staff, a handful of members of the Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition attended the meeting to hear the presentation since the group has been spearheading the efforts to recycle and compost in the community since it formed.

One of the first overall questions, which McKeen says she hears at almost every discussion, is a simple one: “Are people really expected to leave compostable items, much of which is food waste, at the curb in front of their house? Won’t there be a proliferation of small animals and rodents getting into the garbage cans and leaving a trail of food scraps on the streets, side-

Apparently not, according to McKeen. Other communities who have composting programs do not complain of any unwanted critters getting into the garbage, at least no more than they did before.

McKeen had been instrumental in supporting legislation passed in 2008, which allowed for commercial composting. She is quick to point out that the law allows for it, but does not require it. Each community makes its own decision to participate. A year or two later, a separate bill had to be passed to allow composting at special events, for things like farmers markets, etc.

One reason the discussion needs to begin early is that the City plans to offer a online survey to residents in order to find a threshold for how much people would be willing to pay for curbside compost service.

What can and can’t be composted A discussion ensued about what foods and food items can be composted curbside. Different towns have decided to pay for different services, for instance, some allow electronics recycling curbside, but that can be expensive. The list of compostables is too long to print here, but is available at elmhurstcoolcities.org/foodscraprecycling.

Still McKeen surprised a few people in the room when she announced some of the items that could be composted.

“Pizza boxes can be composted as can greasy bags from fast food,” she said. “As long as there are food scraps on the garbage, it can be placed in the curbside compost container.”

She said other things that can be composted are waxed cardboard, napkins, paper towels, paper plates, paper milk cartons, tea bags, coffee grounds/

filters. Food items include fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, seafood, shellfish, bones, rice, beans, pasta, bread, cheese and eggshells.

Things that cannot be composted include plastic bags/wrap, straws, styrofoam, bottles or cans, aluminum foil, liquids, hazardous waste, diapers and pet litter. Items that can be contaminants to composting are produce stickers, wooden handles from garden tools and supplies, treated weeds, grass or flowers, railroad ties and any wood that’s been stained, painted or treated in any way.

It amounts to what McKeen calls “The Fantastic Three,” which is recyclables, compostables and garbage.

Recyclables includes paper, plastic, glass, metal, etc.; compostables is for food scraps, food-soiled paper, plants and yard waste. Everything else falls under garbage.

Advantages for gardeners, environment The advantages of the program for the resident is that there would be less trash, about 33% less than what is currently considered garbage. It would also save money on sewer bills, water bills, and would result in fewer pickups and smaller trash bins.

Eventually, the company that wins the bid to do the composting would be able to return compost to residents who wish to use it in their gardens.

That means less watering, increased plant success and the ability to hold water and soil particles together, thus reducing soil erosion. For the environment, it means less run-off, less erosion, less fertilizer and less pesticide.

The stats — numbers don’t lie McKeen shares some startling statistics about how much is wasted in the U.S. For instance, 133 billion pounds of food, or 40% of food produced in our country, gets wasted, she said. That’s enough to fill 730 football

stadiums and is equal to $165 billion.

“We live on Planet Earth, not Planet Dirt,” she added.

Other towns are ahead of Elmhurst on this venture. There are currently 22 communities in Illinois with curbside composting including Oak Park, Wheaton, Naperville and Glen Ellyn, among others. The Village of Villa Park and its schools have it, as do other schools like Elmhurst College, Benedictine, North Central College.

McKeen said York High School is looking into it.

Costs and ways to pay There are several ways to pay for the service, based on the needs and desires of the community. It’s one of the reasons the City is doing a survey.

Glen Ellyn uses a subscription service, which will collect yard and food waste. There are three cart sizes: 35 gallon, which costs about $135.74 annually; 65 gallon for $160.80; and 95 gallon for $208.80. Naperville also has a subscription service with two cart options: 65 gallon for $111.60 annually or a 96 gallon cart for $130.60.

Food waste composting is only available for subscribers. Wheaton does not use a subscription, but rather a “PayAs-You-Throw” program, which allows residents to purchase stickers to attach to disposables. The consumer cost is $2.75 per sticker, one sticker per bag or container. In Wheaton, residents use their own containers or yard waste bags, no larger than 35 gallons or 50 pounds when filled.

West Chicago man charged with multiple gun, drug offenses DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced recently that multiple charges have been filed against a West Chicago man allegedly opening fire on an occupied vehicle late last week. Jose Cardenas, 26 of 328½ High Street, appeared in Bond Court this morning where Judge Joseph Bugos set bond at $200,000 with 10% to apply. In all, Cardenas faces one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Weapon (Class 1 Felony), one count of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance – Cocaine (Class 1

Felony), one count of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance – Heroin (Class 4 Felony), one count of Possession of Cannabis (Class 4 Felony), two counts of Possession of a Weapon by a Felon (Class 3 Felony) and one count of Possession of Ammunition by a Felon (Class 3 Felony).

Detectives with the West Chicago Police Department began an investigation into allegations that at approximately 3:48 a.m., on June 10, an unknown vehicle approached a vehicle with several occupants and shot at the

vehicle several times. Through the course of their investigation, Detectives identified Cardenas as a suspect in the shooting. Cardenas was taken into custody from his place of work without incident. The Aggravated Discharge of a Weapon charges stems from the allegations of the shooting on June 10. All other charges stem from Cardenas’ arrest on June 15.

Tannins places #1 on list of Top Ten Wine Bars Web site honors downtown Elmhurst business

Tannins restaurant and wine bar in downtown Elmhurst has made the very top of the list of Best Wine Bars in Illinois, according to the web site BestThingsIllinois.com.

Tannins’ owner Mike Allas admits he was skeptical.

“There’s all kinds of surveys and lists out there and we just wanted to make sure this was legit before we made it public,” he told the Independent in an interview. “I went to the web site, which is a site for tourists. They have all kinds of ‘Top Ten’ lists for best restaurant, best hamburger, things like that.

“They put it out on social media and it got almost 6,000 hits.”

Needless to say Mike and his wife Cyndi, who co-owns the wine bar, are thrilled at the honor.

“One reason we realized it was all legit is that, of all the wine bars, seven are in Chicago but there were two others that were ‘out there’ that is, south or way west. It wasn’t just Chicago bars.”

“Yes, I made each mint julep and they are quite labor intensive,” he said. “The mint is muddled to order. I believe I made 55 mint juleps that day. It wasn’t easy but it was a lot of fun.

Commissioner Vincent Spaeth, who is the president of the park board, said the joint play will serve as a tool and a road map for the board. Amendment to Gateway agreement The board voted unanimously to approve the proposed fifth amendment to Gateway Special Recreation Association Articles of Agreement.

The Elmhurst Park District is one of nine members of the Gateway Special Recreation Association, which provides recreational programs for persons with mental and physical disabilities. Rogers explained that the amendment to the articles of agreement is related to the City of Countryside rejoining the association.

New treadmills coming to Courts Plus The board voted unanimously

to approve the replacement of 15 treadmills at Courts Plus. The vote approved a contract with LifeFitness of Rosemont in the amount of about $105,000. The vote also approved an installment contract with Community Bank of Elmhurst for nearly $108,000 to be used toward the purchase.

Brian McDermott, the district’s director of enterprise services, told board members the 15 treadmills to be replaced are not yet past their useful lives. The maintenance costs for those treadmills, however, are rising. The district acquired five of those treadmills in 2008. The district bought the other 10 in 2012.

McDermott said the treadmills are the most used pieces of equipment at Courts Plus. He said the district explored the option of leasing new treadmills but decided to purchase them. He said LifeFitness treadmills are known for their longevity and that the new items should be around for at least the next seven to 10 years.

Rogers noted the district will receive a trade-in value for the 15 models being replaced. The new treadmills should be available at Courts Plus in mid to late August. The district is purchasing 10 Discover SE3 models (at $6,500 per unit) and five Integrity SC models (at $4,149 per unit). The total cost also includes television screens and extended warranties for each item.

Following closed session, Board talks real estate The board went into closed session to discuss the acquisition of real estate. Board members came out of closed session and voted on a resolution to approve the property at 0S761 Old York Road for $1,550,000. The resolution passed by a vote of 4-2.

Spaeth and Morissette-Moll joined commissioners Kevin Graf and Timothy Sheehan in approving the purchase. Kies and Ubriaco voted against the resolution.

Kies said that while she was not opposed to acquiring the property, the price was too high. Ubriaco also said that while she really wanted to acquire the property, she believed the price was too high. She noted the property had just been acquired for $1 million on April 17.

Next Board meeting cancelled Rogers proposed cancelling the board’s next scheduled meeting on July 24. There were no objections from any commissioners. The board will hold its next meeting on August 14.

July 10 Alejandro Calderon-Decide, 33, of Lombard, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Villa at around 2:07 a.m.

July 11 Police said that subsequent to a report of a traffic crash (vehicle vs. pedestrian) near North and Route 83 at around 6:47 p.m., it was found that the victim had gotten out of his vehicle to confront another driver in reference to his poor driving. According to police, the suspect then struck the victim with his vehicle and left the area. The suspect then contacted police and came back to the accident. After speaking with both parties, they both declined to sign complaints. The victim was treated for minor injuries.

July 9 Police said that subsequent to a call for a battery at a hotel in the 500 block of W. Grand Ave. at around 2:56 a.m., a complainant related there were approximately 10 subjects upstairs on the fourth floor fighting. She also observed blood in the hallway. A subject was located in the hotel pacing back and forth and had blood on his right cheek and several bruises on the left side of his face. The subject refused to answer any questions and did not wish to follow up with charges if a suspect was located. No other subjects were located in the hotel.

July 7 • Franklin Alrich, 31, of Carpentersville, was charged with two counts of battery in the 700 block of N. York at around 8:02 a.m.

Police said a victim related that he picked up Alrich for work. Upon arrival, a physical altercation ensued, according to police, and Alrich punched the victim in the eye.

• Police said that while a victim was working at a car wash in the 600 block of W. North Ave. at around 2:16 p.m., a customer, who did not want her receipt, threw the receipt back at the victim. The victim put the receipt back into the suspect’s car, but the suspect then reportedly exited the vehicle swearing, threw the receipt at the victim, and hit the victim on the arm. An investigation is pending.

June 16-June 30 • A complainant at a restaurant in the 200 block of N. York told police at around 3:14 p.m. that between the above time dates, unknown suspects used a $20 counterfeit bill.

The complainant stated they believe it was used by a customer without knowing it. The bill was confirmed counterfeit by the complainant’s bank.

July 8 Officers responded to a pub in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 1:08 a.m. for a report of an impending fight outside. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the victims who stated a group became upset with them when victim’s wife reportedly splashed water at them. Neither victim could point out any suspects, nor did they wish to sign complaints.

July 8 A juvenile near Park and Arlington victim ran into the police station at around 2:12 a.m. and stated her father had strangled her while driving home. The victim’s father came into the police department shortly after and officers were able to talk to both parties. The reporting officer did not observe any marks around the victim’s neck. Due to conflicting statements, no arrests were made and the victim was transported to her mother’s home for the night.

July 6 Police said officers responded to the report of a domestic between a mother and son in the 400 block of Verret St. at around 7:07 p.m. The suspect was found to be tossing things around the house and began “wrestling” with the victim in the kitchen, according to police. Neither parties showed any signs of injuries and agreed to stay separated for the night.

July 8 • Alejandra Guerrero, 26, of Lombard, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Route 83 at around 8:48 a.m.

• Sergio Hernandez, 27, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and illegal transportation of open alcohol in the 200 block of N. Highview at around 3:50 a.m. Police said Hernandez was found to be sleeping in his car with open alcohol.

• Volodymyr Mazur, 44, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, violating a one-way street, no valid driver’s license and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Eggleston at around 1:16 a.m.

• Benito Vazquez, 21, of Elmwood Park, was charged with DUI, speeding, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 4:49 a.m.

July 12 • Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 4:05 p.m., the driver of the vehicle, Jesse Loucks, 22, of Lombard, was observed concealing an unknown object under his seat. Police said it was learned that Loucks was attempting to conceal a cannabis-smoking pipe, a cannabis grinder, and cannabis. Loucks was issued four citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, disobeying a stop sign and no insurance. During a search of the vehicle, police said officers located pills in the purse of Katelyn R. Gozdal, 20, of Lombard. She admitted she did not have a prescription for the pills, according to police. Gozdal was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

• Police said that subsequent to a call for drug activity at condominiums in the 800 block of N. York at around 11:07 p.m., juvenile suspects were found to be in violation of curfew. One of the juveniles also was found to be in possession of cannabis. That juvenile was charged with possession of cannabis and curfew. The other two juveniles were charged with curfew. All were released to their parents.

July 10 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Schiller at around 12:48 a.m., a reporting officer smelled the strong odor of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle. The officer could also see two beer cans located near the back passenger seat, according to police. Police said a search of the vehicle yielded a brown paper cigar containing suspected cannabis. Joseph Rubio, 20, of Elmhurst, was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor, possession of cannabis and driving without headlights.

July 9 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Haven and Schiller at around 2:51 a.m., Vanesa S. Morales, 28, of Chicago, the driver of the vehicle, was found to be in possession

of drug paraphernalia and a straw with heroin residue. Morales was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, improper lane usage and no insurance. Ronald J. Solarczyk, 61, of Chicago, was found to be in possession of crack cocaine, heroin/cocaine and drug paraphernalia, according to police. Solarczyk was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Police said K Lynn M. Andruszko, 22, of Chicago, was found to be in possession of needles and a straw with heroin residue. Andruszko was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

July 8 Police said officers responded to the 300 block of W. Lake at around 7:30 p.m. for the strong odor of burnt cannabis coming from a parked vehicle. Upon arrival, officers made contact with suspects who admitted to smoking cannabis prior to officers’ arrival, according to police. A search of the vehicle yielded cannabis, police said. Yasmin Rodriguez, 28, of Whiting, was in possession of a cannabis grinder, according to police, and was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. The other suspect was released without charges.

July 6 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Spring at around 5:58 p.m., officers made contact with Troy Harris, 33, of Carpentersville, who was attempting to conceal over-the-counter medication. According to police, Harris admitted to stealing the medication. A search of the vehicle yielded a glass pipe, over-the-counter medication, numerous empty bags of heroin, and numerous hypodermic needles, according to police. Harris admitted to possessing the drug contraband, police said, and was charged with one felony count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

July 10 A complainant in the 400 block of E. Vallette St. at around 5 a.m., she and her dog awoke to the sound of thunder. When she went to let her dog out, she noticed the north side front bay window of the residence was cracked. The area was searched for rocks or BB pellets, but none were located.

July 11 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 900 block of S. Swain Ave. at around 12:23 a.m. A victim told police that while sitting in his parked car, he witnessed three suspects exit an older model Toyota and run up to vehicles in the driveways of various residences on the block. The victim attempted to confront the suspects, but then realized he was outnumbered. The suspects ran back to the unknown Toyota and fled the scene prior to an officer’s arrival. The three suspects were able to remove a white Ping golf bag from an unlocked Jeep. Kathy graduated from Elmhurst College in 1971 with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, where she spent some of the happiest years of her life. Jaycees change date of annual Carnival Annual event set for Aug. 17-20

The Elmhurst Jaycees have changed the date of their annual Carnival, usually scheduled in early June just after the school year ends, to a weekend later in the summer.

The 28th Annual Jaycees Carnival 2017 will be held this year on the weekend of Aug. 17-20 in the same location as prior years, along Park Ave. between Prospect and Myrtle and the Mill Theatre parking lot.

“We don’t want people to think we skipped this year or have abandoned the event, we only decided to change the date,” said Frank Catalano III, Board President of the Elmhurst Jaycees. “The Carnival has become an important part of summer tradition in Elmhurst and has a proven record of being a positive way for the City to bring people to Elmhurst.”

Most of all, Catalano said, he wanted the public to know that all other aspects of the Carnival will remain the same.

“Yes, we’ll be hosting Special

Kids Day, Mega passes will be available, there will be Police Explorers at the corners [to ensure safe crossing], everything,” he said.

Special Children’s Day will be held Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m.12 noon exclusively for children with special or limited abilities and their families. It allows the participants to enjoy the Carnival with fewer crowds, no bright lights and less noise. There will other activities just for our special guests, games, giveaways, goodies and more.

Mega passes will be $60 for unlimited access throughout the Carnival. Daily unlimited rides wristbands will be will be available for $25.

Fire Department responds to garage fire on South York

Elmhurst Fire Department and mutual aid companies responded to a structure fire at 664 South York Road on Tuesday, July 11 at 5:57 p.m. The Fire Department was initially notified by the resident who saw smoke coming from her detached garage and called 911. Engine 2 arrived on scene and reported smoke coming from a detached garage behind the

home. Entry was forced into the garage and the fire was quickly extinguished by fire department personnel with minor damage to the interior of the garage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Elmhurst Fire Department was assisted by Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Villa Park, and York Center Fire Departments.

Club or Pole? Choosing the stick sport for summer

Summer brings out two vastly diverse species of sports persons wielding sticks, and I’m not referring to hockey and lacrosse. I’m talking about fishing poles and golf clubs.

While not impossible, it is a rarity to find a golfer who enjoys the rigors of fishing and vice versa. If you happen to do both, good for you. But by and large fisherpersons fish and golfers golf. That is the way the world was created.

Logistics demand it. Both sports require patience and time. Lots of time. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to both fish and play golf. So one must choose. To golf or to fish: that is the question.

Unless you need no sleep. But most of us do.

Along with being time hogs, the two activities share a number of commonalities.

The first is money. Both sports can get expensive if you are going to dive in hook, line and sinker.

You’ve got to have the right equipement and dress the part. For a fisherperson this can involve a lucky shirt, lucky hat, a rod, reel,

bait, tackle box, life vest and boat.

For a golfer it often includes one glove, lots of clubs, even more balls, double that on tees, a visor, special shoes, a polo shirt, goofy looking pants or maybe knickers and a golf cart, if you are really serious about the sport.

Competitiveness and (dare we say) a propensity to perhaps exaggerate one’s abilities and success on the green or on the water are also par for the course. The way this is demonstrated differs between the two, however. With golf, the scores inexplicably inch lower while with fishing the inches of “the one that got away” grow higher.

Both involve water. Fisherfolk are on the lake. Golfers can be in the drink. With golf, the aim is

to put a tiny ball into a tiny hole.

With fishing it is to put a big fish into your big boat, or dinghy, if your boat’s not that big. Size matters to fisherman, but only when it pertains to the size of the fish. Size isn’t as important in golf. Accuracy and power of drive lead to success or maybe even a hole in one.

Both activities give you access to fresh air. They involve patience and a steady hand, and all it takes is one great shot or one great catch to make the entire day, well, great.

Golfers and fisherpeeps are known for their litany of excuses when things don’t go as hoped.

The wind shifted. The sun was in my eyes. Too many clouds. Wrong ball. Wrong bait. A bad hook. Lost my ball in the drink. Lost my lure in the lake. Sand trap. Sand bar.

Lousy swing. Lousy cast. Lousy weather.

The sports also share some of the same terms, albeit with different meanings. Golf involves the dreaded worm burner. Some fisherfolks dread the worm baiting.

In golf a hook is a bad thing. In fishing it is a sharp thing. In golf

We are home shopping again.

I don’t know exactly what I want, but there is plenty that I know that I don’t want and actually there is plenty that I know that I do want.

But I don’t have one set image of my “dream house.”

I go weak in the knees for a well-heeled Victorian. A sweet little country cottage makes my heart beat fast too. A sleek loft in the city is amazing. A property with acreage has appeal too. Thus, I am not a realtor’s dream client.

If asked what I want in a home, my reply does not state requisite square footage, amenities, or “gleaming hardwood floors.” (Check out real estate listings sometime and make it a drinking game. “Gleaming” will get you drunk.)

My reply would go something like: “Well, it must be pretty, pretty, pretty; beauty inside and out, and peaceful, and warm and welcoming.

It must feel like luxurious quality; a haven, a refuge, a sanctuary, with magical surroundings. It simply has to wow me. It has to FEEL right.”

It does not matter style or size or if it has granite counter tops, it has to feel like home. I don’t apologize

for being picky and at the same time wide open. When I divorced and was dating again, my only “requirements” were someone in my general age range, someone who had kids so he understood my mommy heart but was not in the throes of raising young children, and someone who GOT ME. I hit the jackpot with my Prince Charming. I was picky, for sure, but wide open when it comes to height, hair color, etc.

My dream man is real and floated in to my reality so my “dream home” can too. It just has to FEEL RIGHT. I will love it and it will love me. Being picky and being open is not schitzo, it’s normal, for me anyway. You might absolutely know you want a brick two-story Colonial with a 3-car garage and an acre yard and gleaming hardwood floors.

We can get exactly what we want, whether we can articulate specifics or not.

A Google search is certainly easier when you can type in that you want a 1974 cherry red Corvette Stingray (sweet!), or an 1864 Italianate (there are several in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Ohio). If I search Kelly’s dream house, I get a listing for a vacation home in Stowe, VT. I love Vermont, but that house is not my dream. And I do not want the Barbie Dream House either.

So we keep on our path of exploration and discovery. For the most part, it’s a joyful quest. Will the next place be our forever house? With me, highly doubtful, but never say never. For now, I’m off to go look at another home, one with gleaming hardwood floors (you know what to do).

Golfing and fishing. They are as different as they are the same.

And they give us a reason to get outside and enjoy a tiny hook or a tiny white ball, depending on your preference.

And, despite the many comparisons, there’s one difference between golfing and fishing that cannot be overlooked: No matter how hard you try, you can’t eat golf balls for dinner.

Toyota holds USO BBQ for the Troops

On Saturday, July 15, the community turned out at Elmhurst Toyota at 440 W. Lake St., for its annual USO BBQ for the Troops. Guests enjoyed tasty barbecue,

heard the sounds of the Senn Alan Band, and took a moment of reverence at the memorial set up. For the kids, there was a moon jump and a giant slide. While the final number collected is not yet known, 100% of all donations go directly to the USO of Illinois.

Prizes for block parties Friday evening Join your neighbors for cook-outs and parties to watch the racers go by your house. Many residents use this day as an opportunity to have friends over or host parties. Members of the Elmhurst Cycling Classic Committee will be visiting residents who have block parties underway to supply race goodies. Be sure to walk to Wilder Mansion for the finish of the race.

Join in “Light Up The Block,” a pre-race neighborhood competition.

In addition to bringing world class bicycle racing to town, the Elmhurst Cycling Classic is offering a chance to show off your chops by decorating your house, yard, trees, even your dog! It’s all designed to make the racecourse the coolest nighttime course ever, organizers said.

The Prize Patrol will be pulling the prize wagon along the course the night before the race on Thursday, July 20 so be ready! It will be loaded with prizes and what will surely be the gaudiest and most coveted trophy in town. Prizes include City Centre gift cards, a yard sign for the winning location and a gaudy trophy delivered with pomp and circumstance.

Bike to the race To avoid parking challenges, visitors are urged to bicycle to the race.

The Elmhurst Bicycle Club will be hosting a free Bike Valet inside the fenced tennis course in Wilder Park. Leave your car at home and ride your bike to the race, knowing you’ll have a secure place to leave it.

People from two generations got to meet and chat (or at least stare!) for a few moments during Elmhurst Toyota’s annual BBQ for the Troops held Saturday, July 15. Whenever we celebrate the U.S. troops, we always have to remember those who have fallen for our freedom. Two gentlemen share a conversation at the War Memorial during the BBQ for the Troops event held Saturday, July 15 at Elmhurst Toyota.

This little fellow took advantage of the inflatable slide that was set up for kids at Elmhurst Toyota’s special event on Saturday, July 15.

It was all part of the annual Toyota BBQ for the Troops, which raises funds for the USO.

Veteran Prescott to join Roll of Remembrance

Leonard F. Prescott, deceased June 24, 2013, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, was honored during the 1 p.m. honor guard ceremony on Sunday, July 16 by having his name placed in the Roll of Remembrance at the Veterans Memorial in Elmhurst’s Wilder Park. His name will remain on the Roll of Remembrance through August 13.

Prescott entered the service on November 17, 1942, attaining the rank of Petty Officer and was discharged

on October 8, 1945. He received the American Area Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Jubilee of Liberty Medal awarded

by France on the 50th Anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1944.

He served on the USS Thomas Jefferson, a troop transport ship, and participated in five major invasions including D-Day.

AAUW seeks contributions for used book sale The American Association of University Women (AAUW ) Elmhurst Area Branch is hosting its annual Used Book Sale August 3-6, at Lincoln Elementary School in Elmhurst, 565 S. Fairfield Avenue.

Thousands of books (hardback and paperback) are available to purchase.

Donated entirely by the community and sorted into over 30 categories, the sale includes a large children’s section, as well as parent/teacher resources, collector’s books, cookbooks, travel, history, self-help, the arts, sports, and much more.

There will also be a section of books from the York HS English Department Reading List for the 2017/18 academic year. A list of the York English department books we receive will be maintained on the AAUW Elmhurst Area Branch website. CDs & DVD’s are also available to purchase. On Thursday, July 13, the Independent learned that there was something being shot professionally on Arthur Street, across from IC, just east of Hawthorne School. Dropping in for some photos, this was as close as we were allowed to the actual filming. While told it was a commercial they were shooting, the crew was close-lipped about what product or service was involved.

A line of moms who provided transportation

While attempting to get a photo of the professionals who were shooting a commercial near Hawthorne School, this row of people was found lined up along the sidewalk. When asked, one woman advised that local children were being used in the filming and that the line-up of chairs was moms who were waiting to take their children back home. Most were using their smart phones to pass the time, since they weren’t allowed close enough to view the filming.

What to do to stop unwanted phone calls (StatePoint) Whether you use a landline, mobile phone or both, you’ve likely received those pesky robocalls -- phone calls that use a computerized auto-dialer to deliver a prerecorded message. As a consumer, here is what to know about this common annoyance to your home or personal line.

• Robocalls are often illegal.

However, keep in mind that some robocalls are permitted, such as companies you have done business with under certain circumstances, medical appointment confirmations and school closing calls. Political and charitable calls are among others that also may be allowed, along with banks and telephone companies, provided those companies make the calls themselves. Remember, many robocalls illegally disguise, or “spoof,” their Caller ID information or violate other rules.

• Advocates are working to mitigate the problem. For example, NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association and its members of more than 800 independent, community-based telecommunications companies are working to provide information to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Robocall Strike Force to further develop and implement solutions to detect, assess and stop unwanted calls from reaching customers.

• Never respond to a robocall.

The Federal Trade Commission

(FTC) recommends that if you receive a robocall, simply hang up. They also warn consumers not to press any number to speak to a live operator or to unsubscribe from the list, as this will tell the robocaller that it’s reached a live number.

• Don’t give out personal information: If you receive an unsolicited call from any company, including one you do business with, tell them that you will not give them information until you verify the call is legitimate. Then, call the phone number you know or that you get from the company’s website to confirm.

• Ask your phone company to block the number. Your carrier may be able to block certain numbers, although robocallers frequently change and disguise their numbers.

• You can use technology to

block calls. Various companies offer products or services that help you control what calls ring on your phones. They range from mobile apps for wireless phones to devices you can plug into your home phone jacks in order to block robocalls to your wireless phone.

The FTC encourages consumers to report unwanted calls to www.donotcall.gov or 1-888-382-1222. Complaints may also be filed with the FCC online or 1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322).

History Museum announces new Curator of Collections The Elmhurst History Museum is pleased to announce the promotion of the museum’s former registrar, Daniel Lund, to the position of curator of collections as of July 5, 2017. Mr. Lund takes over the responsibilities of managing and curating the museum’s collection of more than 20,000 artifacts, photographs and historically significant objects as well as contributing to exhibits and providing reference services to the public.

Lund has worked at the museum in a part-time capacity for more than three years, and has been integrally involved in collection care, inventory, and the ongoing project to digitize the Elmhurst History Museum’s collection. Daniel was also involved in growing and integrating the museum’s searchable online database of historical photographs and ephemera into the EHM’s web site to make more collection items accessible to the public and researchers. He also initiated a weekly Throwback Thursday Feature on social media that showcases photos from the museum collection that has quickly become

DuPage County launched a new web-based application that will provide navigation tools and information about the DuPage County trail system.

The DuPage Trails App showcases all trail routes in DuPage County. The app allows users to pinpoint parking lots, rest areas, restrooms, popular destinations, bike shops or emergency assistance facilities nearby.

The web app can also link to the

County Citizen Reporter app, which can be used to highlight damage, problems or issues on the trails. The web app can be accessed directly at dupageco.org/trailmap, or through the County Navigate DuPage app, which is available for iOS and Android devices.

“This application will make it easier for users to learn about trail features around them. And, it provides an easy way to report unsafe condi-

tions on the trails. We hope the app makes it easier for DuPage residents to plan outings and take advantage of the more than 500 miles of trails in our County,” said DuPage County Transportation Committee Chairman Don Puchalski.

The web app was developed internally through a cooperative effort between the Division of Transportation and the Geographic Information Systems Department.

Elmhurst Park District pools earn prestigious 5-Star honor Has received award 5th year in a row Elmhurst Park District lifeguards are top notch according to the Starfish Aquatics Institute. Reviewers did an unannounced audit at East End Pool and Norman P. Smalley Pool during June, and staff was notified that the review for both facilities turned up a 5-star audit, a prestigious honor in the world of aquatics!

Lifeguards were first assessed using a “mystery shopper” approach to evaluate scanning, attentiveness and professionalism. More than 50 performance metrics were assessed and both Elmhurst Park District facilities met and exceeded critical standards in each one to earn the overall 5-Star rating.

The Elmhurst Park District is no stranger to 5-star audits. District pools have received the honor every year for more than five years. According to Angela Ferrentino, Director of Parks and Facilities, it comes down to setting the bar high and only hiring the best.

Annalia Fowler, pool manager and lifeguard instructor, has been with the District five years and has seen the staff continuously excel.

“Lifeguard safety for us takes a lot of time and dedication that allows staff to acquire the knowledge needed to keep the Elmhurst Park District Pools 5-star facilities,” Fowler said, “It is a highlight of my summer to watch the staff grow and learn through our practices.”

ISWS hosts FEMA mapping project meetings The Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS), on behalf of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is hosting two meetings on Thursday, July 27, to present the revised preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) for DuPage County. The first meeting will be for local government officials from 1:30-3:30 p.m., and the second will be a public open house from 4-8 p.m. The open house will be held in the auditorium of DuPage County’s JTK Administration Building (421 County Farm Rd., Wheaton).

The meeting for local govern-

ment officials will include presentations on the revised preliminary FIRM and FIS panels, including changes incorporated since they were originally presented in 2015.

In addition, during the open house, ISWS, FEMA and DuPage County staff will be available to help citizens locate their properties answer questions. These staff members will offer expertise in engineering, GIS, floodplain mapping, floodplain management, Letters of Map Change, FEMA administrative procedures and flood insurance.

Residents living in or near special flood hazard areas, realtors,

insurance agents, developers and representatives of lending institutions are encouraged to attend. In advance of the open house, FEMA has posted digital copies of the revised preliminary FIRM and FIS report materials at www.fema.gov/ preliminaryfloodhazarddata.

Lawmakers overrode Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of a $36 billion budget July 6, enacting it into law. Under the newly-enacted budget, the state will spend around $7 billion for public sector pension funds.

That means the entirety of the $5 billion income tax increase will go to pay for pensions, and nearly 20 cents of every dollar taxpayers send the state will go toward public sector pensions this year.

Sheila Weinberg, the founder and CEO of the government finance watchdog group Truth In Accounting, said the planned payment is ac-

tually short of what’s needed.

“One thing that we’re concerned about in this current budget is they are actually reducing the contributions into the plan as the liabilities are increasing,” Weinberg said. “It is similar to me saying that my budget is balanced, but I won’t be making the minimum payment on my credit card.”

Truth in Accounting Director of Research Bill Bergman said it’s another example of kicking the pension can down the road.

“It’s remarkable, but at the same time it’s consistent with past practices – taking your time to catch up,” he said, “and meanwhile, unfunded pension benefits and the growth rate is accelerating.”

Illinois’ unfunded pension liability is $130 billion and growing.

McKillop said Illinois’ debt is one of the largest of all states.

“Unfunded pension costs, unfunded retiree health care costs and debt –…measure that against the state’s personal income, or the size of the economy,” McKillop said. “Illinois’ [debt] is third-largest in the country.”

Weinberg said paying down the growing debt will squeeze out vital services taxpayers deserve.

State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) said the same thing happened with the 2011 temporary income tax hike, when the increase went to pay off growing pension obligations.

She is worried lawmakers won’t actually address the root cause of the pension crisis – generous benefits – until things really start falling apart.

layoffs occur because we can’t fund anything but pensions – until you see that in the state of Illinois, people will refuse to wake up and figure this out,” Ives said.

Ives said state government needs to move all new hires into a sustain-

able system similar to a 401(k)-style plan prevalent in the private sector.

Critics of the tax hike and budget have said it does nothing to address the state’s debt issues and could prolong the problems of digging out from the mess.

Bucking a trend dating to the Great Recession, millennials are starting to buy more homes. Good news for the nation, but what about Illinois, which young people are fleeing in droves?

Home purchases by Americans ages 18-35 have been dropping for more than a decade. However, a report by apartment-finding service ABODO found that young homebuyers nationwide have accounted for the largest increase in home purchases in the last couple months. The largest spikes are in smaller cities and towns. ABODO Senior Communications Director Sam Radbil says young people have typically been renters by choice.

“You live in a place, you pay your rent and you’re very mobile,”

he said. “The millennial renter-bychoice mindset is more of a flexibility type of mindset. It’s all about the ability to do more with your money and your time in general.”

This shift could mean a significant boost for the housing industry, but it could also mean a bigger separation in the recovery between Illinois and other states. According to IRS data, the state lost more than 80,000 residents ages 18-35 between 2011 and 2015.

And with one of the lowest percentages of millennial homeownership in the Midwest, Radbil said Illinois’ higher housing costs are likely to be what’s making would-be homeowners continue to rent. Little more than a third of the state’s millennials own a home, according to the report.

Yesfest brings music, comedy, art, poetry, film festival

Five years ago, a group of self-described “stir crazy” performers wished they had a festival in Elmhurst where they could perform all the things they loved: original music, comedy, improv, and poetry.

“Nothing like that really existed in Elmhurst, so that’s how Yesfest came to be,” said Clark Pavlik, co-founder of the festival. “The mission was to provide a supportive and fulfilling event for musicians, artists, comedians, and poets in the community,” he said. “When you get people together and give them a space for them to come and present their art, awesome things happen.”

Yesfest 2017 will take place Friday, July 28 from 12-9 p.m. and Saturday, July 29 from 12-8 p.m. The event is open to the public and is free with the exception of the stage located inside the Art Museum which is free for students and $9 for adults. Performances take place at Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 S. Cottage Hill Ave. and Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave. Yesfest had humble beginnings: first in a park, the next year in a garage. Now in its fifth year, Yesfest has grown into a two-day festival featuring more than 60 acts on three different stages. The event is co-presented with the Elmhurst Art Museum and the Elmhurst Public Library.

“The amount of talent in this town is limitless,” said Pavlik, who says that this year, submissions had to close earlier than expected because of the overwhelming response.

York summer baseball team wraps up season Dukes beat Westmont 10-0 in playoff opener

The York summer baseball team concluded its season with a pair of games in the recent Phil Lawler summer state tournament hosted by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association.

York opened regional play with a 10-0 victory over Westmont. York scored a run in the bottom of the first and then opened the flood gates with eight runs in the second. The game lasted five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Andrew Deardurff scored a run.

Ryan Ross was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk. Timmy Bowbin had a walk. Joey Jaeger had a run scored and an RBI. Mike Pastuovic went 1-for-1 with a run scored, two RBI and a walk. Ted Miller scored a run. Anthony Scalzitti had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Joey Chiappetta had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Dan Pierotti had two hits and an RBI. Ian Steinorth had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Joe Orrico had a hit and an RBI. Bo Tomas had a hit, while Dan Brown walked and scored a run. Pierotti doubled: Steinorth’s hit was a triple.

York also stole seven bases with Pastuovic and Ross each swiping two.

Charlie Pakenas was the winning pitcher.

“We hit and pitched well,” said York coach Dave Kalal. “Our kids came out and hit the ball well. The eight runs in the second were all we needed. They did a great job.”

York then was eliminated from the playoffs after a 5-3 loss in eight innings to West Suburban Conference Silver Division foe Glenbard West.

York finished the summer with a 10-9 record.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning and remained that way until both teams each scored two runs in their half of the seventh. York tied it and ultimately sent the game into extra innings when Pastuovic logged an RBI single.

Glenbard scored two runs in the eighth.

Deardurff scored a run and walked once. Chris Lee also scored a run and walked once. Ross had a hit and a run scored. Pastuovic went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Chiappetta walked once.

Steinorth walked three times. Thomas had a hit. One of Pastuovic’s hit was a double. He also stole a base.

Jake Hadawi threw 7 1/3 innings.

He allowed four on 14 hits, while striking out three and walking one.

He threw 113 pitches, with 72 going for strikes. Glenbard West stranded 12 runners in the contest.

“The Glenbard West game was a really good game,” said York coach Dave Kalal. “It was fun. It was good competition and our kids battled. It’s a little disappointing that we didn’t advance, but I was not unhappy with how we played. Glenbard West outhit us. Jake kept us in the game and pitched out of some jams. Guys were getting on base and he got out of it.

He did a phenomenal job. It was a

good high-school baseball game. We just didn’t match Glenbard offensively. They are going to be a good team next spring.”

Kalal was extremely pleased with how the summer unfolded.

“We saw a lot of kids this summer,” he said. “We had 40 kids playing in the summer on the varsity. We saw kids in a lot of situations both offensively and defensively and on

the mound. We saw them in a lot of situational stuff. We saw if a kid could handle things if they were a pinch-hitter or if we asked them to put down a bunt or how they handled themselves on the bases. We got a good overall view of what we have.”

Kalal said the coaching staff will have some decisions to make next spring.

“It’s going to be tough next

spring,” he said. “We have to choose a team with a lot of good players to choose from. Our numbers are good.

That’s going to be the challenge for the coaching staff next spring.”

Kalal lauded the efforts of Orrico at catcher as well as Clayton Letourneau and Will Rand.

Post 187 reaches championship game of 11th District

The Elmhurst American Legion baseball team is headed to the next level.

Post 187 went 2-2 at the recent 11th District tournament hosted by Wheaton at the Wheaton College field behind the Carol Stream American Legion Post to qualify for the 2nd Division tournament this week at Barrington High School. That double-elimination tournament was slated to start Wednesday.

Post 187 earned one of two 11th District qualifying spots by defeating Wheaton in the consolation bracket of the three-team double-elimination tournament. The victory put Elmhurst in the 11th final against Elgin Post 57. Elgin downed Elmhurst 11-1 in seven innings to win the 11th title. Elgin joins Elmhurst in Barrington this week.

In Elmhurst’s 5-0 win over Wheaton to clinch the division berth, IC Catholic Prep’s Brendan Russ and York’s Austin Gelsomino combined to throw a three-hit shutout. Russ pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, while striking out six and walking three. Gelsomino pitched the final 1/3 of an inning.

Elmhurst broke a scoreless deadlock through five with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Muddogs added a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Fenton’s Tim Beecroft walked three times. Russ had a hit and drew a walk. York’s Mike Bernal walked once. Gelsomino went 3-for-5 with a run scored. York’s Nick Lee had a hit, a run scored and two walks. Ray Abarca (Elmwood Park) had two RBI, a run scored and a walk. York’s Tamaine Durr had a hit and a run scored, while York’s Brendan Connell had two hits and a run scored. One of Gelsomino’s hits was a double. Gelsomino and Abarca each stole three bases. York batters were walked eight times and had eight hits.

Elmhurst kicked off the tournament with a 3-2 win over Wheaton Post 76.

The Muddogs scored two runs in the fourth. Wheaton scored a run in the sixth and one in the eighth to tie it at 2-2, but Elmhurst came back with what would be the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Eichhorn had a hit and an RBI. Beecroft went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Reed had a hit and scored a run. Bernal also scored a run. Abarca had a hit. Elmhurst had six hits.

Reed pitched a nine-inning complete game. He gave up only five hits and two earned runs, while striking out 12 and walking only two. He threw 79 of 120 pitches for strikes.

He faced seven batters over the minimum.

“Austin pitched very well,” said Elmhurst coach Mike Biondo. “He only gave up five hits and went all nine innings.”

Biondo also lauded Orosco’s pitching performance against Elgin in the first playoff meeting with Post 57.

“He went six innings and did well,” he said. “He ran into a little trouble after a tough balk call.”

Overall, Biondo is thrilled the team is headed to Barrington for a shot at qualifying for the Department tournament (Illinois state tournament).

“I’m glad we got that win against Wheaton which allowed us to move on to the Division,” he said. “All in all, we did well. Our bats were there and the pitching was good. We need to clean up our defense, eliminate the errors and take care of the baseball. It’s good we are going to the next level.”

said Kalal. “He worked at it this summer. It was nice to see him taking instruction and learning. He got better as a receiver and he put the ball in play when he was at the plate.

Clayton opened our eyes as well and showed us what he can do and Will had a good summer. Kids like them showed us some good things and so did a lot of other guys. We will have some tough decisions to make next spring about who is going to make the roster.”

Kalal also is encouraged by the number of multisport athletes that are on the team.

“It nice to see so many guys who also play football and basketball,” he said. “It nice to see two-sport athletes, which I feel is so important at the high-school level. Guys who are playing a varsity sport in the fall or the winter helps us because they come in here and they understand the competitiveness and the speed of the game.”

The coach is looking forward to the spring of 2018.

“We have 16 guys back from this past season. We’ll have a lot of innings back on the mound. We should have another fun spring,” said Kalal.

Since concluding his run on the York boys golf team, success has continued to find Jordan Less.

Following a strong freshman season at Northern Illinois University, Less recently qualified for the upcoming prestigious U.S. Amateur golf tournament.

Less, a sophomore-to-be at NIU, will compete Aug. 14-20 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., and Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles in the premier amateur golf event in the country. The field will play two rounds of stroke play after which the top 64 players will compete in six rounds of single-elimination match play to determine a champion. The U.S. Amateur is the oldest USGA championship, created in 1895.

“It’s something I always dreamed about,” Less told the Independent recently. “I was talking to my coach on the phone and four years ago I wouldn’t have seen myself playing in something like this. All the hard work I have put in got me into the U.S. Amateur.”

Another returner who stood out was Ty Merrick. “Ty also had a nice summer,” the coach said. “He does a lot of intangible things that make teams good. He talks well out there and he leads well and handles the ball. He’s solid in a lot of areas.”

Michael Thomas and Justin Baez also took steps forward. “Michael Thomas gives us a good kind of combination,” said Plaisier. “He’s good at playing the point and we can put him in a position to score it for us. Justin is a junior who had a nice summer for us.”

Plaisier sees the summer progress as a good springboard into the upcoming season.

“Coach (Jack) LeGrand (Timothy’s athletic director and former coach) did such a great job preparing these guys to play basketball the right way,” said Plaisier. “Some things to these kids are second nature. We changed some things on offense and defense.

They have bought into wanting to get better. With a new coach, things take time. The summer was a good introduction to it. Our goal is to keep improving in order to be competitive in late February and March.”

Plaisier saw a team that was committed to getting better in the summer. “Their work ethic is the thing that has been really promising,” he said. “They also have a good ability to learn. On the floor, we share the basketball, which also is very promising. We preach scoring via the pass instead of scoring via the dribble. I was very pleased to see that. I loved seeing the joy they got when the pass they made to a teammate resulted in a scored bucket. Instead of playing for themselves, they are playing for each other, which is extremely encouraging.”

Plaisier said wins and losses have zero weight during the summer. “I tell them we don’t measure success on wins and losses in the summer,” he said. “We measure it by the quality of basketball we are playing out there.

We’re looking at getting more consistent with how we defend and how consistently we are scoring it. We’re also measuring it by how hard we play and how well we play together.”

On the individual front, returning starter Brandon Orange had a strong summer. “Brandon played really well,” said Plaisier. “He had a really

The Knights reached the semifinals of the competitive Ridgewood summer league where they lost to Benet Academy.

“That was a very competitive league,” he said. “We played some big schools such as Lane Tech and St. Patrick and Lincoln Park and DePaul Prep, which is a big Class 2A school. We played there twice a week and did well.”

The Knights also partook in the Hoops Mountain shootout at Batavia where it beat Oswego and lost to Naperville North, while also beating West Chicago.

“We beat a very good Naperville North team at Hoops Mountain,” said Tyrrell.

IC Catholic Prep also trekked up to Michigan to Ferris State University for a team camp.

“That was a new overnight camp for us,” said Tyrrell.

The Knights won the championship at Ferris State, going undefeated with only seven players.

“Our guys battled and played

very well together,” said Tyrrell.

“We have a couple new faces on the team. These kids are coachable and they listen. As a coach that gives you energy when you have that type of reception.”

Tyrrell was pleased with the progress he saw from seniors Zen Bakhtalovska, Kris Askew and Nico Gaudio.

“Zen didn’t make the team last year,” said Tyrrell. “He came back this summer and was focused and started for us in the post. He fit in extremely well. We’re excited about Zen and are high on him. Kris Askew did an outstanding job in a starting role this summer and Nico also started and is a guy who gave us a lot of minutes in the post last year. These guys get the job done and play hard and are smart and listen to what the coaches are trying to implement in our system. We also have unselfish players. There is a lot of things to be encouraged about.”

Tyrrell revealed Amari Reed, who played on the team last year, has transferred to Fenton High School in Bensenville. He also noted that Luke Ricobene, who played last year, did not play this summer in order to focus on football where he is the starting quarterback on the

defending state-championship IC Catholic Prep team. Tyrrell noted Ricobene told him he did plan on being back for basketball in the fall.

Junior Mike Carpanzano and sophomore Dom Gaudio (Nico Gaudio’s brother) also will help the Knights. “Mike gave us an outside presence and Dom is a sophomore we brought up who will help us out,” said Tyrrell.

The coach did not forget about the contributions of returning all-conference players Kevin Cheng and Alex Meurer.

“Kevin and Alex are extremely focused,” said Tyrrell. “They have put in a lot of work. They’ve put on some muscle and have improved their game. We expect very big things out of both of them.”

Yet another contributor is senior Pat Shannon. “Pat is working really hard,” said Tyrrell. “Defensively he is a bulldog for us. We’re excited to have him in the rotation.”

Tyrrell sees a lot of positives heading into a new season. “We finished the season very strong last year,” he said. “We won conference and won the regional. We have some players returning who have a great deal of experience. I’m energized and excited and focused. The entire coaching staff is. We’re looking forward to keeping the momentum going.”

Beautiful turnout, weather for Garden Walk & Faire Monarch exhibit a hit with the kids

By Marisa Mancini For The Elmhurst Independent A delightful crowd of women, men, and children enjoyed the Elmhurst Garden Club’s 22nd annual Garden Walk & Faire on Sunday, July 9. The “An Afternoon in the Garden” event featured six lovely private gardens, a public garden located in York Community High School’s interior courtyard, and the Faire in Wilder Park. Proceeds from the Garden Club fund horticultural scholarships to college students and the needs of local community groups.

Hannah Peterson, 7, has attended the Elmhurst Garden Walk every year of life. Realtor specializing in Illinois expats says the tax hike helped business ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK A realtor brandishing the slogan “Get Out of Illinois” has seen an explosion of new business since the state legislature voted to raise income taxes.

Fifty-year-old Mikie Larsen and her husband made the decision to leave Illinois in recent weeks. They’re in the process of fixing up the Rockford-area home they’ve lived in for 17 years so it’s ready to sell. They plan to move to North Carolina. Larsen said they both could easily get work there but were hesitant about the 5.75 percent income tax compared with Illinois’ 3.75 percent tax rate.

“The only thing that made us say ‘eh’ about North Carolina was that the income tax was a little higher, but our lawmakers just took care of that excuse,” she chuckled. “I know a lot of people complained about the weather in Illinois, but that never really bothered us. We grew up there. We just wanted to get out of the tax burden.”

In July, lawmakers overrode Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of a bill to raise the state’s individual income tax rate to 4.95 percent.

Larsen worked with Angela Kirsch, a North Carolina-based realtor with Keller Williams Realty who moved away from Illinois with her husband years ago. She says her website, getoutofillinois.com, has seen exponentially higher

Woman lives her dream of opening dance studio Evolution Dance welcomes interested students

Erica Jaunich, founder of Evolution Dance Experience in Elmhurst, has been dancing her whole life.

As an only child in Minooka, she grew up making up dances and performing for her family and friends.

Though Jaunich was a member of Minooka High School dance team, she did not take dance lessons until her senior year of high school.

“I had a natural talent, and a huge amount of passion and dedication,” she stated. “After high school and during college, I was hired by Universal Dance Association, where I traveled across the United States teaching camps and workshops as well as judging dance competitions.

I was even given the opportunity to travel to Paris, France to take part in the Mayor’s Day parade.”

During college, Jaunich was a member of the nationally ranked University of Illinois Chicago Dancing Flames, winning the national title two years in a row, and was also hired by Midwest Dance Company, a studio owned by Tracie Marciniak, who at that time was the director of the Chicago Luvabulls. Jaunich was the Hip Hop Department Head at Midwest for nearly 15 years.

“I also had the wonderful opportunity working for a dance conven-

tion company founded by Tracie Marciniak and Paula Abdul, called Co. Dance, where I worked with some amazing choreographers and judges seen on So You Think You Can Dance like Tyce Diorio, Brian Friedman, Wade Robinson, Mia Michaels and Barry Youngblood,” said Jaunich.

In 2002, Jaunich moved to Elmhurst.

“When I got married and had children, Elmhurst became my home -- and I couldn’t get the passion of dance out of me,” she said.

The Elmhurst Park District hired her to grow its competitive dance program eight years ago, and she served as its director for seven of those years. There is where her dream to own her own studio began.

The dream comes true In September 2016, Jaunich realized her dream and opened Evolution Dance Experience. She chose to open her studio in Elmhurst first and foremost because Elmhurst is her home.

“I’m very proud to call [Elmhurst] my home,” she said. “I feel honored to represent the Elmhurst community and we are so lucky to have such a large and talented dance community.”

She stated that her mission with Evolution Dance Experience is to provide a caring, positive, motivating dance studio environment, teaching all elements of dance technique and performance, while instilling a long-lasting influence in

each student’s life.

“I am a member of an organization called YPAD, that stands for and stresses the implementation of safe boundaries and healthy artistry within ALL dance settings for children and teens. We follow these standards that were created with the best interest of young dancers in mind. At our studio, you will see dancers in age-appropriate costuming, dancing to age-appropriate music and doing age-appropriate moves.”

Jaunich is passionate about teaching the art and love of dance as well as inspiring each dancer to be the best they can be in reaching their full potential.

Evolution Dance Experience, located at 576 North Michigan Street, offers a wide variety of non-recital and recital classes in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Boys-Only Hip Hop and Musical Theater. Step into a magical world with the Elmhurst Children’s Theatre production of “Seussical Jr.” July 28 and 29.

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical Jr., a musical extravaganza from Elmhurst Children’s Theater Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos.

Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him.

Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

For kids and parents who grew up reading Dr. Seuss books, this musical stage show adaption of the classic stories will be fun for the whole family.

“I love the music of Seussical, it feels modern for a musical – unexpected, engaging and interesting,” said Sandburg 6th-grader Rose Donato.

“The music is energetic and catchy, it will be really fun to perform,” said Nathan Walker, a fifth-grader from Lincoln School, who is new to ECT. This production is directed and choreographed by Bryan Wlas, joined by Musical Director Phil Videckis and Assistant Director Courtney Gronewold. This is Wlas’ fourth production of Seussical.

“One of my favorite parts about working with ECT is how dedicated and enthusiastic the kids are,” he said. “Even though we have a short timeframe for the summer production, I love watching the kids work together and create a lovely piece of theatre.”

Performances are July 28 at 7 p.m. and July 29 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The show will take place on the stage of Field Elementary School, 295 N. Emory. Tickets are $8 and sold at the door.
