ECPA Board welcomes Cathy Richardson, Cheryl Peterson ECPA, the Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts is pleased to announce the addition of two new members to its Board of Directors.

“We are delighted to welcome two outstanding individuals to our ever-expanding Board of Directors,” said Laura Michaud, Board Secretary/Treasurer. “Their dedication to our mission, insight, and professional experience will be impactful as we propel forward with big changes.”

Grammy-nominated lead singer of Jefferson Starship since 2008, Cathy Richardson was born in Burr Ridge and attended Hinsdale Central High School. Cathy’s career has varied from commercial jingles and off-Broadway stage productions to creating and self-releasing seven albums.

“I am thrilled to not only bring my array of skills and experience to the ECPA Board but to also to see this incredible vision come to life for my community,” she said. Cathy has lived in Elmhurst since 1995.

Cheryl Peterson grew up in Addison, attended Elmhurst University, and completed her graduate studies at DePaul University.

She is a Certified Public Accountant with the DuPage Water Commission. Cheryl enjoys supporting the arts and was most recently on the Board of Directors for Elmhurst Children’s Theatre.

Obituary John “Jack” Tegmeyer, 90 John “Jack” Raymond Tegmeyer, of Elmhurst, passed away on July 8, 2020 at the age of 90. Jack was a veteran of the U.S. military.

According to a report issued by the Elmhurst Police Department, an investigation is currently underway about an incident being considered a hate crime.

Several news stations were broadcasting the report throughout the day but at press time, it was not yet known if any suspect or suspects had been arrested. Police told ABC Channel 7, NBC Channel 5 and other news outlets that on Sunday, June 10 at about 9 a.m., officers had responded to a residence in the 400 block of North Oak St., where it was reported that “symbols of hate” had been applied with spray paint to two garage doors at the residence there, as well as a vehicle in the driveway. Red paint was used to draw three swastikas. Police believe it happened sometime between 9:45 p.m. Saturday evening and 9 am. Sunday.

Detectives are looking into whether that the residence was singled out for the attack or whether it was random.

People who live in the area who have home surveillance cameras are asked to look for suspicious activity and report any findings to police. Anyone with information about this incident should contact the Elmhurst police at 630-530-3050.

The Dipsy Desserts location at 300 W. Lake St., Suite #100C in Elmhurst, got a pleasant surprise on Monday morning, when Ana Belaval from WGN Channel 9 in Chicago decided to pay them a visit and feature the store in her “Around Town” segment – as well as try out their tasty treats! Several students were onhand to demonstrate what happens when you schedule a birthday party at Dipsy Desserts.

The owner Megan explained that each person gets their own ice cream making machine, picks their own ice cream base flavor – chocolate, vanilla, birthday cake or a vegan vanilla -- then they choose extras and addins from a large selection to create their own custom ice cream. (Interesting note: they have NO nuts on the premises at all.)

Then it takes 20 minutes, which can be a long time to wait for ice cream, especially for young people!

So what do they do while they wait?

“There are pints [cartons] and bags to decorate because they not only get to enjoy their ice cream here, everyone gets their own custom ice cream flavor to take with home with them,” Megan said. “Birthday parties last about 90 minutes and with that, you get some ice cream education, we have a sprinkle wall by the photo booth, and then we play ice cream

games.”

Asked if there was an age limit for birthday parties, Megan said they have held them for ages 3 through adult.

“It’s a great party for adults by all means,” said Megan. “After all, who doesn’t love ice cream?”

The kids agreed the ice cream was good-tasting. One girl added sprinkles, M&Ms and gummy bears to her

ice cream flavor.

“You have to add the gummy bears last,” she said, “otherwise they gum up the machine.”

Elmhurst’s own Pilot Pete, owner of the coffee shop experience at Elmhurst’s Metra train depot, was pouring some tasty drinks to hot and thirsty attendees at the Elmhurst Garden Club’s 2022 Garden Walk & Faire on Sunday, July 10. The weather could not have been better for touring some outstanding gardens owned and nurtured by Elmhurst residents.

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Assault, battery July 1 Police said officers responded to the 400 block of W. Butterfield at 9:44 a.m. for a neighbor dispute and battery. The complainant related he has had an ongoing issue with the suspect who continues to drive over his driveway’s apron. Subsequent to an argument, the complainant related the suspect opened his car door striking him several times. The suspect related the complainant stepped in front of his car door as the suspect was exiting his vehicle. The suspect was served with a no trespass notice.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement July 2 While patrolling the Addison parking deck at 7:30 a.m., an officer observed a red plastic fire extinguisher case was broken. The broken fire extinguisher case is located on the north side of the third level.

A victim in the 300 block of E. Cayuga told police that on the evening of June 30, the victim woke to three loud bangs, checked the living room and did not see any damage. Upon leaving the residence this morning, the victim observed a circular hole in the center of her living room picture window. The reporting officer did not locate any items which may have caused the damage.

June 30 While on patrol in the 100 block of N. Addison at 7:39 a.m., a reporting officer saw writing in paint in several locations on the seventh floor of the Addison parking deck. The public works department was notified of the damages.

DUI, DUI-drugs, transportation of open alcohol, possession of open alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor July 4 Olivia Wojcik, 33, of Hanover Park, was charged with DUI and no insurance in the 100 block of E. First at 2:50 a.m.

July 3 Sourivanh Nouvong, 43, of Elgin, was charged with DUI and no registration plate on vehicle in the 300 block of S. Rex at 2:13 a.m.

Brayan Velasquez-Chavez, 21, of Carol Stream, was charged with DUI, obstructing identification, improper lane usage, transportation of open alcohol by a driver and no valid driver’s license subsequent to a traffic stop near North and River Glen at 4:37 a.m. Police said the suspect also was found to have three warrants from DuPage County.

July 2 Michael Lesniak, 22, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, speeding and expired registration subsequent

to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Poplar at 1:59 a.m.

July 1 Doroteo Samaniego Morga, 46, of Addison, was charged with DUI and no insurance near Route 83 and Lake at 11:05 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a make your own case call, the suspect’s vehicle was located with the suspect slumped over the wheel on the shoulder of the road.

Fleeing, eluding

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported one incident of fleeing and eluding during which the driver of a vehicle fled the scene after being stopped for a traffic stop by police.

Obstructing July 7 Myisha Simpson, 27, of University Park, was charged with driving while license suspended, obstructing a police officer, failure to signal and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near West and Belden at 12:04 a.m.

July 5 Prince Apraku, 45, of Addison, was charged with obstruction of identification, no valid driver’s license and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and North at 8:51 a.m. Police said Apraku presented to an officer a driver’s license and identification card that did not belong to him.

Possession of cannabis in a vehicle

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported four incidents of possession of cannabis by either the driver of a vehicle or a passenger: Leontay Camron Taylor, 19, of Carol Stream, near St. Charles and Argyle at 12:34 a.m. July 1; Derek D. Evans, 28, of Maywood, near Grand and Lake at 8:26 p.m.

July 4; Darius A. Green, 23, of Berkeley, in the 100 block of N. Addison at 5:39 p.m. July 4; and Jarmarcus Turnage, 33, of Chicago, near West and Belden at 12:04 a.m. July 7.

Suspicious circumstances July 5 A complainant in the 500 block of S. Berkley reported at 7:10 p.m. that she observed a group of males walk towards her porch. When the complainant confronted them, the group of males ran off towards a gold minivan. The complainant was unable to obtain suspect information at this time.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery July 5 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of E. Adams at 3:51 p.m. A victim stated that an unknown suspect(s) used his information to open two online bank accounts.

July 1 Fraud was reported in the 500 block of S. Kearsage at 2:52 p.m. A victim reports he was hired by a company on Indeed to do clerical work. The company then sent him a check to purchase supplies and requested he Zelle an

CALL 800-222-TIPS unknown person money. The victim deposited the check but did not send them the money.

The reporting officer contacted the company and was advised the company was not hiring or associated with Indeed.

Identity theft was reported in the 600 block of Van Auken at 11:15 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used his personal information to open a fraudulent Comcast Xfinity account.

Attempted burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 900 block of N. Industrial at 1:34 p.m. An unknown suspect was observed working his way through the parking lot with a coat hanger attempting to open vehicle doors. The victim had the only vehicle damaged from the suspect attempting to gain entry. There was damage on the driver’s side door window trim.

June 29-June 30 Theft was reported at Elmhurst University.

A complainant related she observed three unknown juveniles driving a campus-owned golf cart around their property. Upon attempting to make contact with the juveniles, they fled through the walkway to Grace Avenue and got into a black SUV. Officers searched the area for the juveniles with no results.

June 29 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of Parkside at 12:46 p.m. A victim related that an unknown person(s) used her banking information in an attempt to complete two fraudulent charges. The victim contacted her bank and the transactions were cancelled.

April 20 Fraud was reported in the 400 block of W. Butterfield at 12:57 p.m. A victim related that an unknown suspect(s) stole her credit card and cash from her wallet. A fraudulent charge was made on the above date and eventually credited to her account. The victim was issued a new credit card.

Unlawful use of a weapon July 3 Tevarius Robinson, 25, of Country Club Hills, was charged with possession of cannabis with an intent to deliver, possession of cannabis and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon subsequent to a vehicle crash near Route 83 and North at 1 a.m. Police said Robinson was in possession of a pistol inside the vehicle and was found to be in possession of more than 400 grams of cannabis with an intent to deliver.

Warrant arrest

July 5 Police said that subsequent to a vehicle crash in the 600 block of N. County Line at 11:34 a.m., Paul J. Igyarto, 33, of Lemont, was found to have a warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

July 4 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at 9:34 a.m., Yaser Hadidi, 62, of Chicago, was found to have a warrant out of Cicero.

Bond set for man who fled after charge of concealing homicide Deceased victim was discovered in Elmhurst in 2000

On Thursday, July 7, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Interim Chief of Police Michael McLean announced that bond had been set for a former Bensenville man who fled after beRomula ing charged in 2000 with Mendoza Concealment of a Homicidal Death, a Class 3 felony. Romulo Mendoza, 46, appeared in court, where Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set bond at $1 million with 10 percent to apply.

On Feb. 4, 2000, Mendoza and his two roommates, Carmelino Gomez, 62, and Pedro Garcia, were arguing at the residence they shared in Bensenville when the verbal argument turned physical. At some point, Gomez grabbed Garcia from behind, placing his arm around Garcia’s neck, causing his death. It is alleged that Gomez and Mendoza then loaded Garcia’s body into a car, drove to County Line Road in Elmhurst near Lake Street Frontage Road, and dumped Garcia’s body on the side of the road. Garcia’s body was discovered the following day by a passerby.

An investigation into the death led to charges of Involuntary Manslaughter and Concealment of a Homicidal Death (both Class 3 felonies) against Gomez and Concealment of a Homicidal Death charges against Mendoza.

In September of 2000, Gomez entered a plea of guilty to one count of Involuntary Manslaughter and was sentenced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

On May 31, 2000, after posting bond, Mendoza failed to appear in court at which time a no-bond arrest warrant was issued. Mendoza was arrested last month attempting to re-enter the country at the southern border of the United States. He was subsequently transported to DuPage County to face the charges against him.

“Twenty-two years ago, Romulo Mendoza failed to appear in court on charges he concealed a homicidal death in DuPage County,” Berlin said. “The apprehension of this defendant sends the message that law enforcement in DuPage County will never give up on a case, regardless of how much time may have passed.

“I thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their continued efforts,” Berlin said.

“I would like to thank the detectives, evidence technicians and police officers who thoroughly investigated this case 22 years ago,” McLean said. “Their dedication ensured the fugitive responsible for this appalling crime was brought to justice and a measure of closure could be given to the victim’s family.”

Mendoza’s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 18, for status in front of Judge O’Hallaren Walsh.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

Bensenville Park District acquires Fischer Farm IGA clears the way for purchase of historic property farmstead into perpetuity.

“The park district has demonstrated a commitment to the preservation and continuation of educating our community about the historic value of Fischer Farm, and we look forward to providing additional programs for the community to enjoy,” said Park District executive director Joseph C. Vallez. “The acquisition of Fischer Farm is a key priority of Bensenville Park District 2.0, in that the acquisition opens up a variety of options for grant funding for program and facility improvements that did not exist for us as tenants of the property.”

The park district has been managing Fischer Farm since signing a 25-year lease agreement with the forest preserve Dec. 19, 2000. The forest preserve acquired the property in 1999.

The Bensenville Park District has acquired the historic, five-acre Fischer Farm property, located at 16W680 Grand Avenue in Bensenville, from the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County for $100,000 through an intergovernmental agreement (IGA).

The park district board of commissioners voted unanimously to authorize the purchase at its Wednesday, June 15 meeting, and the forest preserve unanimously approved of the purchase at its subsequent meeting on Thursday, June 21.

“The Bensenville Park District has managed this historic property since the original lease agreement in 2000,” said Park Board president Rich Johnson. “After years of hard work, we are pleased to approve this purchase agreement, which will allow us to continue our work to restore and preserve this historic property.”

The property conveyance was negotiated with restricted terms for a possible future visitor center limited to 3,000 square feet, an open pavilion limited to 625 square feet, a parking lot limited to 50 spaces and an ADA-accessible restroom limited to 220 square feet. Editor’s note: This is a classic Slices of Life column from October 2014.

Superman, Wonder Woman and the Incredible Hulk all possess superpowers, but I enjoy supremacy even greater than x-ray vision, unlimited strength or the ability to fly.

My capabilities come from grocery lists in my pocket and canned goods on aisle seven. It’s the power of food acquisition and I’ve assumed extreme control.

Those of us in the know know it doesn’t get any better than that.

Simply put, I do 97.376 percent of the grocery shopping for my family. Let the scope of that sink in for a moment. Pause and ponder like you might over the glazed donuts in the bakery section.

Victuals. Chow. Sustenance.

Edibles. Nourishment. Cuisine.

Food impacts the menu, mood, mind and mojo – and the person purchasing the food is in charge.

Not even Superman with his flowing red cape and tight blue tights can top that.

It’s absolute power at its finest.

If I want tacos for supper, we have tacos for supper. Yo quiero. Never mind they had tacos at school for lunch. To heck with that. Mom’s got a craving – for pizza or potato salad or potpie. It’s what’s for dinner.

It gets even better. I alone am in control of their entire cookie supply. Chocolate chip, frosted or oatmeal – I get to choose. Snack control is a commanding tool when in the hands of the skilled superhuman formerly known as mom.

For instance, three years ago I banished fruit snacks from the pantry, declaring them imposters – without membership in any food group. The young people living with me still beg for fruit snacks on occasion, but I’m holding fast.

Power trips can be exhilarating.

Speaking of power trips, I took two today. There’s another perk of my supremacy – multiple trips to the grocery store on any given Tuesday. This phenomenon occurs when an essential item is forgotten during the initial outing. Even superheroes have memory lapses.

Today I forgot dog treats and ice cream, which were egregious errors according to all four and two-legged inhabitants of my home. So I returned for round two of the hunger games. They are happy with me now. That isn’t always the case.

Like the time I went on a diet.

They lost 12 pounds between them during the first week; I was up two. I finally caved and bought some white bread and processed cheese spread. It took a couple days, but they warmed up to me eventually. Such is the price of super-heroism.

Sometimes one of them attempts to accompany me to the store. They’ve even tried stowing away in the backseat, but I’m smarter than a fifth grader – plus I have eyes in the back of my head. Having a sidekick acts like kryptonite to my superpowers and causes us to return home with extra cereal and corn chips. There can be only one superhero in the family – except if you are Batman.

I am not a complete mom of steel. I allow them to make food requests, which I may or may not fulfill. They’ll just have to wait and see. Anticipation can encourage a person to do superuncharacteristic and super-helpful things – like make the bed, pick up dirty clothes off the floor, empty the dishwasher, throw in a load of laundry or mow the lawn without being asked. All completed in the time it takes your mom to do the grocery shopping.

The power to influence them like that is nothing short of super – and I’m not even wearing my cape today.

AAUW Used Book Sale coming Aug. 4-7 Seeking donations of books, materials now through Aug. 1

The Elmhurst Area Branch of the AAUW is now collecting books for its Annual Used Book Sale to be held Aug. 4-7 at Sandburg Middle School, 345 E. St. Charles Road.

Books, CDs and DVDs can be dropped off anytime in designated bins now through Monday, Aug. 1 at the following locations: Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect; Park District Courts Plus, 186 S. West Ave. Books and materials can also be dropped Sandburg Middle School (the preferred location)

Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, when sorting will be taking place.

Thousands of used books, CDs, and DVDs will be available at the Annual Used Book Sale. Well organized into more than 30 different categories, the four-day sale features a large children’s section, as well as a collector’s area. Proceeds benefit local scholarships and national AAUW research and programs for women.

The Elmhurst Cougars 16U Younglove travel softball team took second out of 20 teams at the recent Iowa-Illinois USSSA state championship held at Green Valley Sports Complex in Moline.

In bracket play, the Cougars were 10-2 winners over the Mokena Blast, 13-3 winners over Lady Extreme and also scored wins over Midwest Intensity (5-2) and Quad City Cannons (7-4). Elmhurst lost 6-5 to the Quad City Cannons in the championship game.

Jensen named York softball MVP; Holba not returning as head coach

Recent York High School graduate Kara Jensen was named the most valuable player of the 2022 Dukes’ softball team this spring, former coach Brendan Holba noted. Holba told the Independent last week he is “no longer the head coach at York.”

Offensively, Jensen hit .320 with 24 hits in 75 at-bats with six doubles, five home runs and 18 RBI to go with 19 runs scored. Jensen struck out 70 in 82 2/3 innings on the mound where she finished with a team-best 3.13 ERA. Senior Lindsey Bingham led the team with a .393 batting average with a team-best 33 hits in 84 at-bats. She had five doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI and also scored a team-high 22 runs. Senior Emily Fujiwara hit .373 with 28 hits in 75 at-bats. She had six doubles, three triples, two homers and a team-best 24 RBI, and scored 20 runs. Senior Haley Sandoval hit .304 with 17 hits in 56 at-bats.

She finished with two doubles, a triple, a homer and seven RBI. Senior Emily Kunst had five doubles and 10 RBI, while freshman Avery Kanouse had four doubles. Sandoval led the team in stolen bases with 13, while Bingham had 12 steals and Fujiwara had eight steals.

In addition to Jensen in the pitching circle, Kanouse struck out 71 in 53 1/3 innings, while freshman Taylor McMillen fanned 23 and walked only 11 in 51 1/3 innings. Kunst led the team in fielding percentage (those

The IC Catholic Prep football team will encounter a familiar face across from it when the 2022 season kicks off in August. The Knights open play at home Friday, Aug. 26 at home against Montini in a non-conference game. IC Catholic Prep and Montini have been part of numerous conference incarnations in previous years, including the Suburban Catholic Conference. Kickoff is 7:15 p.m. at Lewis Stadium in Elmhurst.

The Knights, who play only four regularseason home games, then hit the road to face powerful Joliet Catholic Academy on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. ICCP opens its final season of Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division action Friday, Sept. 9 at home at 7 p.m. against Elmwood Park.

The Knights then head to Norridge for another Blue Division contest Friday, Sept.

The exception is that Week 2 game against defending Class 4A state champion JCA. The

final four games will all be against teams that made the 2021 state playoffs with Wheaton Academy playing two postseason games, McNamara playing three, St. Francis playing two and R-B playing one extra game on the schedule.

IC Catholic Prep went 11-2 last season and advanced to the Class 3A state semifinals.

Next, to bring a weapon to school.

Some schools shut down for a day, others increased their security measures.

While social media sites helped fill the need for social connection during the pandemic, there has been a negative side. Turning to social media, teens have became bolder in their comments and actions.

TikTok challenged students to remove items from their school bathrooms. In the days that followed, schools reported an increase in vandalism, particularly in the bathrooms.

Some schools limited access to the restrooms to avoid vandalism.

Edward-Elmhurst Health has announced the formation of Edward-Elmhurst Medical Group (EEMG). With more than 650 clinicians, EEMG is one of the largest healthcare provider groups in the Chicago area.

For the first time, physicians, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and ancillary providers (licensed clinical social workers, dietitians and others) caring for patients in the Edward-Elmhurst Health service area will share a common medical group name and market themselves as one group.

Among the newly employed members of EEMG are 123 providers, including 108 physicians and 15 APPs, of Elmhurst Clinic, which became part of EEMG on July 1 following 71 years of service to the Elmhurst community. The Clinic began as a six-physician group in 1952.

“The message to our patients is that while our name is changing, the same high-quality, exceptional care they have come to expect will not change,” said Daniel Sullivan, M.D., co-chief physician executive, NorthShore–Edward-Elmhurst Health.

“We are extremely proud of the care this collective group provides to our communities each day. That includes providing preventive care by our primary care providers, acute inpatient care from our hospitalists and specialized care for the sickest of patients.”

EMMG includes: • More than 650 clinicians including hospital-based and ambulatory providers, and those from Linden Oaks Medical Group.

The trying times endured since the pandemic make it understandable why students feel more anxiety. Research suggests the prolonged use of social media can increase feelings of anxiety and inadequacy, especially in young people.

To find balance, look at the core reason your teen is using social media.

Do they crave peer approval, are they seeking fame, do they hope to be the next YouTube sensation?

Encourage them to find balance between their social media use and their interactions with others. Steer your child toward activities that support their values, which is a great way to build their confidence and self-worth.

Help teens find safe ways to interact with others in ways besides a social media app. Plan an outdoor activity on a weekend and urge your teen to invite as many friends as possible to come along. Bring a picnic to a beach, a park, a forest preserve. Have the teens play outdoor sports together – it’s healthier than staring at a screen alone in the dark. It can be helpful in moving them away from the negative influence of social media and find balance in their life.
