HARVEY E. ROGERS, 87 Harvey E. Rogers, affectionately known to everyone as “Bud,” passed away July 2, 2017 at the age of 87. Bud was born in Knoxville, Tenn., and was a longtime resident of Elmhurst. Bud is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Therese “Teri”; father of Kim Phillips, Lisa (Frank) Borta, Laurie (Ron) Nasti, Susan (Tom) Krisch, Ron (Christy) Oestreich, Buddy Rogers and Teresa Rogers; loving grandfather of 15; proud great grandfather of two and honored great great grandfather of one; brother of the late John K. (survived by Wilma) Rogers, Nancy (Bud) Helton, Beverly Monroe and Larry (Elaine) Rogers and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Bud was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 80 for more than 60 years, a master woodworker, avid fisherman, motorcycle enthusiast, golfer and gardener. STEVEN F. WOJNICKI, 27 Steven F. Wojnicki, of Burr Ridge, formerly of Elmhurst, died suddenly at home June 22, 2017 at the age of 27. Private services were held June 26 at Adolf Funeral Home, Ltd. in Willowbrook. Steven was a 2008 graduate of York High School in Elmhurst, an Eagle Scout, a member of the Order of the Arrow and worked as an accountant in Oak Brook. He is survived by his parents Steve and Melinda (Moser) and sister Eleanor “Ellen.” He was preceded in death by grandparents Fred and Eleanor Moser. A memorial is being established in Steven’s name. ICGS teams make the mark at Destination Imagination Immaculate Conception Grade School wrapped up their Destination Imagination season recently by competing against teams from all over the world in the Global Finals tournament held in Knoxville.

This year ICGS had eight DI teams (more than any other DI program in Illinois), qualify for participation in the state tournament, and from those, five ICGS teams advanced to the Global Finals tournament. Global Finals draw more than 1,400 of the top-scoring Destination Imagination teams from 45 U.S. states and 14 countries including Singapore, China, Guatemala, Poland, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, and more, these ICGS teams had remarkable success.

Eighth grade teams takes second and fourth place in challenges An eighth grade team, competing at the middle school level, has qualified for Globals four times in the past and each time has placed in the top ten.

Their goal this year was to finish in the top three, which would earn them the privilege of walking onto the stage at the Global Finals Award Ceremony. They succeeded this year finishing second in the Improvisation challenge. This team, known as “Just DI It,” includes Anna Dray, Therese Giannini, Aidan Janc, Carl Knable, Michael Kuhl, and Josh Schierl.

ICGS had another eighth grade team called “Destination Infamous,” which consisted of students from past years past as well as newcomers to the DI challenge. This team earned a fourth place finish in the middle school level of the Scientific Challenge. Their challenge solution was particularly entertaining as all the team members sang throughout, except the team member that received a “vaccination” for CSD (Chronic Singing Disorder). Team members included James Golen, Aidan Janc, Erin Johnson, Michael Kopec, Jen Schiliro, and Ryan Veach.

Other ICGS teams from lower grades perform well ICGS also had a fifth grade team comprised of a group of children that were new to Destination Imagination, and after finishing first in both the Regional and State Tournaments in the elementary level of the Scientific Challenge, went on to finish fourth overall at Globals! This team, known as “ULTRA,” is a team to watch in the future. Members included Ella Conkle, Marguerite DiMarco, Kyra Hickman, and Caitlin Johnson.

Two other teams also participated in the Global Tournament. The seventh grade team, “6 Carmalaz3rz,” competed in the Improvisational challenge. The team members are Dylan Cushing, Kevin Gliatis, Mac Imes, Declan Kenneally, Lino Narcisi, and Grace Stewart. The sixth grade team, “DI Bling”, comprised of Ella Carmignani, AvaRose Giannini, Anna Ringelsetter-Ennis, Greta Schamberger, and Gia Toliopoulos competed in the Service Project challenge. Both of these teams have had prior experience at the Globals tournament in past years as well.

Girls XC team holds mattress sale fundraiser On Saturday, July 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the York girls cross country team is holding a mattress sale to raise funds to purchase new uniforms.

It will be held in the common area of York High School, where a complete mattress store will be set up for residents to shop and purchase a new bed, while supporting a good cause.

Additionally, ICGS eighth grader, Therese Giannini had her pin design and logo chosen to represent the state of Illinois this year. Participants traditionally trade pins at Destination Imagination tournaments and accumulate quite a collection.

Destination Imagination program is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning. Anyone can participate. The 2016-2017 Destination Imagination year was a record one for Immaculate Conception Grade School.

Elmhurst Cycling Classic returns for fifth year Collegeview neighborhood looks forward to pro bike race

All day and into the late evening of Friday, July 21, the community will host the Fifth Annual Superior Ambulance Elmhurst Cycling Classic in the Elmhurst College neighborhood.

Volunteers still needed Race officials are still seeking volunteers. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age as of the day of the race and must fill out a USAC Race Volunteer Liability waiver, available at the web site.

Many shifts still need volunteers, all of whom receive a t-shirt and a meal ticket.

Park District hosts Middle School Night on Thursday Students ages 11-14 in grades 6-8 won’t want to miss the Middle School Night this Thursday, July 13 from 8:30-10:30 p.m. at East End Pool. Enjoy music provided by a DJ. Drinks and snacks are available for purchase.

At 6:20 p.m. sharp, families are invited to ride bicycles around the 1.2 mile pro course. There will be on-the-spot prizes for best-themed riders at the finish line. Bike to the race To avoid parking challenges, visitors are urged to bicycle to the race. The Elmhurst Bicycle Club will be hosting a free Bike Valet inside the fenced tennis course in Wilder Park. Ride your bike to the race, knowing you’ll have a secure place to leave it.

Rotary installs officers, salutes past presidents

On Thursday, June 29, the Independent had the privilege of attending the installation dinner and ceremony for the Elmhurst Rotary Club.

Joe Weigel stepped down as president and Rob Kopecky was sworn in for his term.

Before installation, the Club recognized its past Presidents, most of whom attended. Past presidents include: Don Alexander, John Davis,

Maryann Gorski, Emily Kitterman, Ted Kulpaka, Elaine Libovicz, Bill Lyman, Bill Shanklin, Lee Strouse, Dennis Sluga, Joe Weigel and John Zawaski.

“We wouldn’t be here without your leadership,” Kopecky said.

In his farewell address, Weigel talked about all the accomplishments the club had made over the past year.

The Club’s finances remain strong, allowing them to support numerous endeavors such as the Rotary Foundation, now in its 100th year; a student attending the University of Edinburgh, who is currently working on her dissertation in Malawi; 100 amenity kits assembled and given to the Friends of the Poor; and, for Family Shelter Services, “comfort boxes” provided for shelter women who are trying to live on their own after being victims of domestic violence.

The Club also supports ShelterBox, a not-for-profit agency that goes into disaster areas and helps set up temporary shelter and other basic necessities of life. Rotary still funds its own scholarship program, granting funds to eight students either in college or on the way.

Weigel also talked about the

amount of volunteering club members do. Recently the Club has been involved with Metropolitan Family Services’ “Music & Memory,” a music program for those with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Weigel also made a special point to mention the Women of Bethel Shoe Fund, providing vouchers to less-fortunate families to buy school shoes for kids.

“That’s where the rubber meets the road,” he said. “One small act can make a difference in someone’s life.”

Rob Kopecky then spoke as the 62nd president of the Club, announcing that the day (June 29) happened to be his 43rd wedding anniversary (his wife Cheryl was in the audience).

“My goal with the help of the Board is to have Rotary be more present and visible in the community and the world,” Kopecky said. “We want to spread the word a little better about the many things we do. We

want to be more socially savvy, too.”

He said club meetings now take place on the 4th Wednesday of the month from 5:30-7 p.m. at Red Arrow Tap. “There is no program, it’s strictly social,” Kopecky said. “It offers a chance to get acquainted.”

Then he talked about one of Rotary International’s biggest projects for the past 50+ years — eradicating polio.

“We are very close to eradication, but we’re not there yet,” he said.

“The latest data shows that in 2017 so far, that is, in six months, there have only been six cases of polio in the entire world. In order to be completely eradicated, there can be no outbreaks at all for at least three years. So we’re close, but we’ll get there.”

Outgoing Rotary President Joe Weigel talked about the Club’s accomplishments over the past year and thanked the officers and members for their efforts.

He was especially proud of the Club’s sponsorship of a student studying at the University of Edinburgh and is currently working on her dissertation in Malawi.

Leonard R. Prescott, deceased June 24, 2013, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, will be honored during the 1 p.m. honor guard ceremony this Sunday, July 16 by having his name placed in the Roll of Remembrance at the Veterans Memorial in Elmhurst’s Wilder Park.

Prescott entered the service on November 17, 1942, attaining the rank of Petty Officer and was discharged on October 8, 1945. He received the American Area Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Jubilee of Liberty Medal awarded by France on the 50th Anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1944.

He served on the USS Thomas Jefferson, a troop transport ship, and participated in five major invasions including D-Day.

Fire Department quench fire on May St. Last week, the Independent learned that the Elmhurst Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 281 E. May Street on Tuesday, July 4 at about 3:45 a.m.

A neighbor notified the Fire Department after she heard a boom, saw an orange glow, and called 911.

The Elmhurst Police Department arrived on scene and evacuated homes at 281 and 285 E. May. Engine 2 reported a a fire took place in

a detached garage fire on the property with exposures to adjacent structures. The fire was extinguished and the area was secured by 4:15 a.m.

The garage and contents were a total loss at 281 E. May with damage to the exterior of the home and to the adjacent property at 285 E. May. Elmhurst was assisted by the fire departments of Hillside, Northlake, Villa Park and the York Center.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

July 3 • Police said officers responded to assist the Fire Department with regard to a green recycling dumpster which was on fire. The Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the fire. A witness noticed a red Chevrolet Traverse parked next to the dumpster with the possible suspects located inside. The vehicle pulled into a different parking spot before leaving the area. The witness then observed smoke and flames coming from the dumpster.

The amount of damage caused to the dumpster was unknown at the time of the report.

• A victim in the 100 block of S. Route 83 told police at around 1:25 p.m. that while his car was parked in a parking lot, a suspect took a shopping cart and pushed it into the side of his vehicle causing damage to the right/rear taillight. The victim confronted the suspect, who reportedly stated, “What are you going to do about it?” The suspect then fled the area.

July 1-July 3 A victim at a boutique in the 100 block of S. York told police at around 8:30 a.m. that they discovered pink hardened sterno wax and caulk on the floors, shelving units, and equipment in an unlocked storage locker in the basement. The victim suspects this defacement was caused by an employee who was terminated from the business.

June 30 A complainant in the 100 block of S. York called police at around 7:55 a.m. to ask that a suspect be served with a no-trespass notice due to threatening behavior. The suspect applied for a cook’s position, but the complainant decided not to hire him. The suspect showed up at the business today wanting to intimidate the complainant. He was served a no-trespass notice.

June 28 A complainant in the 1200 block of S. York Road told police at around 1:31 p.m. that during the above noted time frame an unknown suspect(s) scratched the driver side rear door and rear quarter panel of his vehicle while it was parked in a parking lot.

Disorderly conduct, trespass notice

July 5 A complainant in the 100 block of E. First St. told police that during his custody exchange, he was alarmed and disturbed because the suspect smelled of alcohol, got very close to the complainant, cursed and used vulgar language towards him while his son was present, according to police. The suspect left before officer could speak with him. An officer later spoke to the suspect’s wife who was present during the incident. She stated that neither she nor the suspect was intoxicated.

July 4 • James Freeburn, 73, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct in the

July 5 Police said a suspect in the 400 block of W. Vallette became angry when the victim told the suspect to clean up the mess in his room. The suspect reportedly became verbally abusive toward the victim, and then damaged a door frame and a window pane. The suspect fled the area prior to police arrival, and was located by his father.

Police said Freeburn fell off his bicycle while riding, and officers observed he was highly intoxicated.

• Police said officers were approached by the manager saying there was a seemingly intoxicated male with his head down in the eating area at around 6:12 p.m. After several attempts to wake him, he eventually became alert and displayed all the signs of intoxication, according to police. Mario Mauricio-Martin, 37, of Franklin Park, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct.

July 3 Officers responded to the report of an intoxicated female who was stumbling down the sidewalk near North and Illinois at around 5:36 p.m., according to police. Police said Robin M. Loren, 47, of Elmhurst, was located and she was found to have slurred speech and difficulty balancing. According to police, officers discovered an open container of alcohol, cannabis, and a glass cannabis smoking pipe.

Loren was issued citations for public intoxication, possession of open alcohol in public, possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

July 2 Steven D. Smith, 41, of Chicago, was charged with disorderly conduct-befouling public property in the 100 block E. Butterfield at around 11:23 a.m. Police said an officer responded to an indecent exposure report. The officer located Smith, who stated he had urinated in the parking lot while his friend was buying cigarettes, according to police.

July 1 • Jack Cronin, 21, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-public intoxication, in the 900 block of S. Saylor at around 1:46 a.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for Cronin, who was reportedly laying on the grass. Upon speaking to Cronin, it was found that he had been drinking alcohol prior to the incident, according to police.

• Dylan J. Schroeder, 22, of Chicago, was charged with disorderly conduct and possession of fireworks in the 800 block of N. Indiana at around 4:20 p.m. Police said an officer responded to a report of a man with a gun. Schroeder was located standing next to a vehicle and stated the guns were BB guns, according to police. Police said the guns were located, a black BB gun pistol was in the driver’s door and a H&K Mp5K BB submachine gun was under the driver’s seat. The BB guns did not have an orange tip, and police said there were fireworks in plain view inside the vehicle.

June 29 A victim in the 400 block of W. Butterfield Road told police at around 11:49 a.m. that they observed a suspect masturbating. The victim did not wish to pursue charges at this time. An investigation is pending.

June 29 A 32-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 100 block of Virginia at around 1:08 a.m. Police said dispatch received a call from a veteran’s crisis center stating the suspect called and admitted to punching his girlfriend in the head and fled the scene. Officers arrived and saw the victim’s left side of her head, face, chest and shirt were covered in blood.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal consumption or possession of alcohol by a minor, illegal transportation of open alcohol, illegal possession of open alcohol, possession of a controlled substance, delivery of a controlled substance July 5 Michael Welch, 60, of Bolingbrook, was charged with DUI-drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, improper lane usage and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Oak at around 5:02 p.m. Police said Welch was found to be under the influence of drugs, and during a search of Welch, a controlled substance was located.

July 4 Police said that subsequent to a complaint of a loud party in the 200 block of E. Columbia at around 3:31 a.m., officers could hear multiple subjects and music from the street.

Jack P. Gamperl, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for possession of alcohol by a minor and loud music.

July 3 Oscar Yescas, 37, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated DUI, driving while license revoked, making an improper turn and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Vallette at 11:50 p.m. Police said Yescas also had two active warrants out of Cook and DuPage County.

Justin Kane, 42, of Glen Ellyn, was charged with DUI and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 3:07 a.m. Police said Kane had red, glassy eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.

The offending vehicle was located and was observed disobeying a stop sign, according to police. Police said a traffic stop was conducted and the driver, Phillip Breckler, 30, of Elmhurst, was found to be intoxicated. Breckler was charged with DUI, failure to give information after striking

June 30 • John Oats, 69, of Bellwood, was charged with DUI and making an improper turn subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at around 2:03 a.m.

• Christina Piper, 42, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI near Vallette and Fairfield at around 2:21 a.m. Police said that subsequent to investigating a suspicious vehicle, Piper exited her vehicle and entered the property of a school. She was located walking on Montrose, where she displayed signs of intoxication, according to police.

June 29 • Jose Huaracha, 25, of Bensenville, and Joseph Casella, 22, of Elmhurst, were issued citations for consumption of alcohol in public at Berens Park at around 12:56 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious vehicle, Huaracha and Casella were found to be drinking and in possession of open alcohol.

• Robert Yahr, 69, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Spring and Saylor Avenue at around 11:18 p.m.

Harassment, threats

July 5 A victim in the 100 block of W. Virginia told police at around 9:52 p.m. that while at his girlfriend’s house, he received a phone call from a suspect where the suspect stated he was going to beat up the victim. The victim then received a text message from the suspect, reportedly stating, “I am coming, be ready.” An officer contacted the suspect and advised him to cease all contact with the victim.

June 22 A victim in the 100 block of Fairlane Avenue told police at around 5:09 p.m. that her ex-husband has been harassing her through both text messages and emails. An officer will follow up with the complaints.

Obstructing identification

July 2 Desiree M. McDonald, 21, of Maywood, was charged with obstructing identification, driving while license suspended, expired registration and one headlight near North and Willow at around 3:29 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, McDonald provided a false name.

July 3 Police said that subsequent to an investigation of a suspicious vehicle parked in the parking lot of Eldridge Park at around 11:45 p.m.,

the suspects were found standing around a picnic table with open beer and a package of cigarillos. Officers detected an odor of cannabis. A search of Suspect 1’s vehicle yielded alcohol, cigarettes, two glass smoking pipes and a small baggie containing cannabis. All three juvenile suspects were placed into custody and transported to the police department. All three suspects were cited for violation of curfew and being in the park after hours. Suspect 1 also was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of alcohol by a minor; Suspect 2 was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor.

All three suspects were released to their parents.

June 30 • Carl A. Bronk, 37, of Elmhurst, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance near Palmer and Schiller at around 12:34 a.m. Police said that an officer responded to the report of a suspicious person in the above location. Bronk was located and found to be in possession of two bags containing suspected heroin and four empty bags containing residue, according to police.

July 3 The owner of Enzee Boutique in the 100 block of N.York told police at around 12:06 p.m. that she determined a juvenile suspect had just stolen a jacket from her business. The juvenile and her friend were located by the owner of RedE Boutique inside the Enzee Boutique. The owner of RedE Boutique spoke with both juveniles, who admitted to stealing a jacket from RedE Boutique and three items of clothing from Enzee Boutique. The clothing items were returned and the juveniles were released to their parents without charges. Both juveniles will be referred to the Peer Jury Program.

Residents appreciate cop’s assistance clearing clogged sewers On Wednesday, June 14, during the heavy rain, a portion of Van Auken Street just north of Belden was flooded due to clogged sewers.

Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence on our street.

For the past 40 years, my husband and I have done our best to keep the sewer in front of our house clear but during heavy rainfall, the sewer clogs faster than we can clean it. Although the water was halfway up our driveway, it was still raining quite heavily so my husband and I decided to wait before attempting to clear the sewer for the second time that day. Fortunately, much-needed help arrived to assist us.

An Elmhurst police officer was driving down Van Auken and noticed the water in front of our house.

He drove to the corner of Belden and Van Auken, where the water seemed to be coming from and cleared those sewers first. He then drove back to our house, located the clogged sewer and proceeded to clear it. My husband Dan and I were looking out the front window waiting for the rain to stop or slow down when we saw the officer outside clearing the sewer.

Dan immediately went outside to help him. Since all five sewers were now clear, the water quickly receded.

Although we did not get the name

of the officer, my husband and I wanted to let him know how much we appreciated his help. He does not live on Van Auken, does not know us and could have driven through the water without stopping or [could have simply] watched while we cleaned the sewer, but he didn’t.

Instead, he took the time to help and for that, we thank him.

Summer brings out two vastly diverse species of sports persons wielding sticks, and I’m not referring to hockey and lacrosse. I’m talking about fishing poles and golf clubs.

While not impossible, it is a rarity to find a golfer who enjoys the rigors of fishing and vice versa. If you happen to do both, good for you, but by and large fisherpersons fish and golfers golf; that is the way the world was created.

Logistics demand it. Both sports require patience and time, lots of time. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to both fish and play golf. So one must choose. To golf or to fish: that is the question, unless you need no sleep, but most of us do.

Along with being time hogs, the two activities share a number of commonalities.

The first is money. Both sports can get expensive if you are going to dive in hook, line and sinker.

You’ve got to have the right equipment and dress the part. For a fisherperson this can involve a lucky shirt, lucky hat, a rod, reel, bait, tackle box, life vest and boat. For a golfer it often includes one glove, lots of clubs, even more balls, double that on tees, a visor, special shoes, a polo shirt, goofy looking pants or maybe knickers and a golf cart, if you are really serious about the sport.

Competitiveness and (dare we say) a propensity to perhaps exaggerate one’s abilities and success on the green or on the water are also par for the course. The way this is demonstrated differs between the two, however. With golf, the scores inexplicably inch lower while with fishing the inches of “the one that got away” grow higher.

Both involve water. Fisher folk are on the lake. Golfers can be in the drink. With golf, the aim is to put a tiny ball into a tiny hole.

With fishing it is to put a big fish into your big boat, or dinghy, if your boat’s not that big. Size matters to fisherman, but only when it pertains to the size of the fish. Size isn’t as important in golf. Accuracy

Both activities give you access to fresh air. They involve patience and a steady hand, and all it takes is one great shot or one great catch to make the entire day, well, great.

Golfers and fisher peeps are known for their litany of excuses when things don’t go as hoped. The wind shifted, the sun was in my eyes, too many clouds, wrong ball, wrong bait, a bad hook, lost my ball in the drink, lost my lure in the lake. Or sand trap, sand bar, lousy swing. Lousy cast. Lousy weather.

The sports also share some of the same terms, albeit with different meanings. Golf involves the dreaded worm burner. Some fisher folks dread the worm baiting.

In golf a hook is a bad thing. In fishing it is a sharp thing. In golf a birdie is a good thing. In fishing it is a flying thing that may or may not be in competition with a fisherperson for said catch of the day– especially if it is an eagle or albatross. When fishing you hope to catch a lunker. With golf you hope to avoid the bunker.

Golfing and fishing, they are as different as they are the same. And they give us a reason to get outside and enjoy a tiny hook or a tiny white ball, depending on your preference.

And, despite the many comparisons, there’s one difference between golfing and fishing that cannot be overlooked: No matter how hard you try, you can’t eat golf balls for dinner.

A Field Trip to the Farm…

Cool Cities Coalition visits Elmhurst’s own CSA farm FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT

The Independent was honored to join a group of about 16 people, mostly members of the Cool Cities Coalition, for a tour of Bob’s Farm, also known as his Fresh and Local CSA, on Saturday, June 24.

Elmhurst resident and Cool Cities member Bob Vierow’s farm is located in Dundee, where he uses crop rotation to control weeds and pests, purchases only organic seed, and grows all his produce using organic methods. He never uses chemical fertilizers, weed killers or pesticides on any food he grows.

A community supported agriculture, or CSA, allows consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. The consumer becomes a “shareholder,” and is offered a membership or a subscription to receive seasonal vegetables and other farm products.

The field trip included a hay ride out to the fields, stops to see various farm animals, and a visit the greenhouse culminating at the store.

“It’s just like Disneyland, you end the tour at the gift shop,” Bob said with a laugh.

Other things to know about Bob’s Farm…

1. If you’d care to make your own journey to the farm, the store hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Needless to say, offerings vary by season and availability.

2. The first weekend in October, there is a big Pumpkin Festival, where you can come out and pick your own pumpkin. There are also potatoes and sweet corn to purchase.

The land and property…

When you arrive at the farm, it feels like you’re pulling into a Forest Preserve — which you are! The property is owned by the Forest Preserve District, who then leases the land to another farmer who manages the farm animal portion of the location. Bob then subleases from that person to grow and maintain his gardens.

“The entire forest preserve is about 600 acres and about 100 acres is dedicated to the animals and vegetables,” he said.

In a typical week, he harvests on Monday, loads up the truck with delivery orders on Tuesday and Wednesday, then on Thursday, makes the delivery rounds to eight different locations. Then on Saturday, he makes deliveries again.

Bob told the visitors that the land all used to be apple orchards and that some of the remaining trees are as much as 80 years old. He said another person is considering beginning another orchard of some kind.

“I was an architect until 2008,” Bob shared with the group. “I’ve been here since 2009.” Asked if he likes farming better than architecture, he quickly replies with a hearty “YES!”

Blood supplies reach dangerously low levels: LifeSource Public urged to donate blood; facilities extend hours through July 16

According to a release issued by LifeSource, blood supplies across the country are at low levels after a decline in donations following the July 4th holiday. In an effort to rebuild supplies and be prepared for unexpected events, LifeSource is calling on the community to come forward and give blood this week and throughout the remainder of the summer. In fact, now through Sunday, July 16, all LifeSource community donor centers will be open extended hours to accommodate more donors.

Over the past few weeks, LifeSource has seen less than a three-day

supply in critical blood types such as O-negative and O-positive. Donations from O-negative donors, the universal blood type, are especially important this time of year due to increased accidents and trauma cases. Additionally, platelet donations, which have a shelf-life of only five days, are in high demand after a slow holiday week. However, donors of all types are needed.

EEH named one of Most Wired Hospitals for third year For the third year in a row, Edward-Elmhurst Health has been named as one the nation’s Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems.

The recognition is based on the 2017 Most Wired survey by the American Hospital Association and Clearwater Compliance, a provider of healthcare compliance and cyber risk management solutions.

Edward-Elmhurst, a system that includes Edward Hospital in Naperville, Elmhurst Hospital and Linden

Oaks Behavioral Health, also made the Most Wired list in 2015 and 2016. Prior to their recognition as part of a system, Elmhurst Hospital made the list in 2013 and 2014, and Edward Hospital was named in 2014.

The annual Most Wired survey is a leading industry barometer that measures information technology (IT) use and adoption among hospitals nationwide. Nearly 700 organizations, representing 2,158 hospitals (39 percent of all hospitals in the

U.S.), took part in the 2017 survey.

According to the survey’s results, Most Wired hospitals are using smart phones, telehealth and remote monitoring to create more ways for patients to access healthcare services and capture health information.

In addition, Edward-Elmhurst is enhancing and developing a wide variety of tools and programs, such as video and e-visits, price-shopping tools for healthcare services and more.

York High School presents junior Honor Roll students York Community High School has named a total of 1,945 students to the second semester honor roll for the 2016-17 school year, based on their exemplary academic performance.

Music, culture, baseball and radio all collided in a perfect storm on July 12, 1979 at Comiskey Park on an evening that has become known as Disco Demolition Night.

What really happened that night, and what set the tone for an event that was innocently billed as Teen Night— and ended up going down in Chicago sports and radio history as the night that disco died?

The Elmhurst History Museum presents what promises to be a lively and enlightening panel discussion on “Chicago in the 1970s: Music, Sports and Radio” on Sunday, July 23 at 2:00 p.m. The program will be moderated by Dave Hoekstra—author, journalist and WGNAM Chicago weekend host, and writer of the museum’s current exhibit “Disco Demolition: The Night Disco Died.”

The panel discussion brings together some key players from Chicago’s cultural, sports and media scene who will offer their own unique perspectives on what went on during this historic event and during the 1970s. Panel participants include: • Bob Chicoine, former Comiskey Park vendor; • Mitch Michaels, former WLUP program manager and rock DJ since 1971; • Jim Rittenberg, general manager Faces disco club; • Jeff Schwartz, former WLUP general sales manager, and • Paul Sullivan, Chicago Tribune baseball writer; and • Mike Veeck, former White Sox promotions manager and minor league team owner.

Hoekstra will lead the discussion which will include an audience question and answer session with the panelists. The program takes place in the Elmhurst History Museum痴 Education Center, located at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst. The cost is $10 for Elmhurst Heritage Foundation members or $15 for non-members. Local realty group collects food during company-wide Kindness Week Donations to be given to Elmhurst-Yorkville Food Pantry

The Elmhurst office, located at 210 N. York Street, chose to collect food staples and necessities for the Elmhurst-Yorkville Food Pantry. The mission of the Elmhurst-Yorkville Food Pantry is to distribute food and relieve hunger in Elmhurst and the surrounding communities.

“We are so pleased with the results of our Elmhurst-Yorkville Food Drive and love the fact that we’re supporting people right here in our community,” said Jude Marchetti, managing broker of the Elmhurst office.

The McCormick House is considered a rare and important example of Mies’ mature style, incorporating elements of both Farnsworth House (1951) and 860-880 Lake Shore Drive (1951) in a revolutionary prototype for mass-produced modular housing. It was originally located nearby at 299 Prospect Avenue, Elmhurst, and was acquired by Elmhurst Art Museum and moved to its current location at 150 Cottage Hill Avenue in 1994.

Acclaimed poet Isabella Gardner, great-grand-niece of the founder of the eponymous Boston museum, and Robert McCormick Jr. commissioned Mies to design the house in 1951 and it was completed the following year with legendary developer Herbert Greenwald as the contractor. McCormick Jr. was the sales agent for 860-880 Lakeshore Drive, a project owned and developed by his father.

York summer baseball team sweeps Leyden Pflum drives in four runs in first-game victory

The York summer baseball team racked up three wins during a recent stretch of its schedule.

The Dukes split a pair of games with area neighbor Willowbrook.

York dropped the first game 2-1 and won the second one 8-3.

York then swept a pair of games from Leyden. In a 15-2 win in five innings, York led 4-2 before scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. York had 15 hits in the contest.

Joey Chiappetta went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Andrew Deardurff had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Joey Jaeger went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI. Mike Pastuovic went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Zach Pflum had a hit, a run scored and four RBI. Ian Steinorth went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Mike Achepohl scored a run and walked once. Carl Baker had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Dan Brown went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Anthony Scalzitti had a hit and two RBI, while Bo Thomas has a hit a run scored and two RBI. Brown had a double, while Deardurff, Jaeger, Pastuovic and Thomas each had a triple. Chiappetta stole a base.

Charlie Pakenas was the winning pitcher. He went three innings and allowed two hits, while striking out four. Henry Judge pitched the final two innings and struck out two.

York won the second game 6-5.

Leyden led 4-2 before York scored two runs in the third inning to tie the game at 4-4 and then scored two more in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.

York won the game with five hits.

Clayton Letourneau had a hit. Eric Mato scored a run, while Dan Pierotti had a hit and scored a run. Adam Parat and Brian Kunst each had a walk. Timmy Bowbin had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Joe Orrico had a hit and a run scored. Quinn Hughes had a run scored and a walk. Will Rand scored a run, while John Milling had a hit, a run scored, two RBI and a walk. Kiefer Kroll and Billy Klulth each walked once. Milling and Orrico doubled and Bowbin hit a triple. York stole five bases with Chris Lee, Letourneau, Mato, Milling and Parat each stealing one base.

Rand, Kluth, Danny Chrisman, Bowbin and Milling pitched in the game. Chrisman picked up the win and Milling earned the save. Rand struck out four in two innings in his starting stint. Five York pitchers combined for seven strikeouts.

York then dropped a pair of games to Downers Grove South. In a 15-2 loss, York led 2-0 in the top of the first inning, but Downers Grove South scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first.

Round Lake led 2-1 after the first inning and 3-2 after three innings.

Post 1170 scored three runs in the fifth to pull away.

Elmhurst was limited to three hits and made four errors. Gelsomino had two hits and a run scored.

Abarca had an RBI, while Bernal had a hit and an RBI. Lee walked once, as did Durr. Bernal stole a base.

Durr pitched the first four innings and allowed four hits, while striking out four. Orosco pitched the last three innings and allowed one hit, while striking out three.

Only three of Round Lake’s six runs were earned.

The Muddogs had a doubleheader with Frankfort Post 1977 scrapped this past weekend that was scheduled for Main Park in Frankfort.

One of the games, that will count as an 11th district conference game, was slated to be made up this past Monday at Plunkett in Elmhurst.

Elmhurst was 10-6 heading into that final makeup game against Frankfort. Elmhurst had a 6-1 11th district record heading into the final Frankfort makeup.

Post 187 is scheduled to open up 11th district playoff action today at the Wheaton College Field located behind Carol Stream Post 76.

Wheaton Post 76 is the host of the district tournament and the 2nd division tournament that follows.

Timothy Christian honors four-year varsity athletes

Timothy Christian recently honored its student-athletes who played a varsity sport for all four years.

Olivia Hoekstra was honored for being a four-year varsity girls’ track athletes as well as playing three sports for four years (track, volleyball and basketball).

Josh Anderson was honored for playing four varsity seasons of soccer and baseball.

Heather Kocol also was honored as a three-sport athlete in volleyball, soccer and cheerleading. Joey Davidson was honored for four years of varsity baseball service.

Frances Mary Apostolos was honored for four years of varsity dance team service.

Hope Zastrow competed in four sports for four years (volleyball, cross country, basketball and softball) and was a four-year varsity softball player.

Danielle Beard was recognized for four varsity years on the girls’ tennis team, while Matt Fox logged four varsity seasons on the boys’ cross-country team. Emily Gifford was a four-year varsity softball player, as was Bianca Jimenez. Samantha Leide was a four-year varsity cheerleader, while Alexis Loerop was a four-year varsity dance team member.

Alex Markewycz was a four-year varsity boys’ soccer player, while Andy Mittlestaedt was a four-year varsity boys’ cross-country runner.

Alyse Schnurr was a four-year cheerleading and girls’ track and field varsity member. Zoe Stanton was a four-year girls’ varsity track team member, while Tommy Troxel was a four-year varsity boys’ cross-country runner. Aiden Shervheim was a fouryear varsity performer in boys’ golf and boys’ cross country.

Davidson was named the school’s outstanding senior male athlete, while Hoekstra was named the outstanding senior female athlete.

Davidson is the ninth-leading scorer in Timothy Christian boys’ basketball history and also was a key contributor to the baseball program.

“I think Joey truly understands what high school athletics is all about,” Timothy baseball coach Jim Snoeyink said in remarks read during the awards ceremony at the school.

“He understands he is playing a game yet works at it as hard as he can to get the most out of his God-given abilities. He is highly respected by his teammates, opponents and coaches. His is an excellent leader on the team. He has a great time with his teammates, but it also is fun to watch him interact with his opponents.

Though he is very competitive, he understands it is a game and he just enjoys playing it.”

Timothy Christian athletic director Jack LeGrand, coached Davidson in boys’ basketball as well.

“I had the pleasure of coaching Joey and also watching him develop not only into an all-conference athlete, but also a young man of God,” he said in his remarks. “Watching him interact with younger players at basketball camps and then being able to interact with his teammates and

friends at school has been an enjoyable experience for me.

“Joey has shown the utmost integrity while playing a game of basketball. Our final game of the year we lost a tough championship game and near the end of the game the official made a (tough) call against us at a very crucial time. Everyone in the gym wearing red or cheering for the Trojans, as well as the other fans, could not believe the call and were a bit vocal and energized. While watching this play over and over on tape I was amazed as Joey, (the person who the call was against), was the only person in the gym who calmly handed the ball to the official and went back to playing. He understood the value of a game in the bigger scheme of things. All of his coaches emphasize the importance of his leadership because he is a person of high character and an exemplary Christian athlete.”

Hoekstra earned all-conference honors in all three sports she played and a state qualifier in track and field.

“Even though she is one of the most athletic girls I have seen, Olivia always worked hard to better herself as an athlete,” Timothy volleyball coach Scott Piersma said in remarks read at the ceremony. “She’s a joy to coach because of her strong work ethic, her love of the activity and her commitment to the team and individual goals.”

Timothy girls’ track and field coach Kevin Hackert added: “Olivia has been an incredible teammate on the track and field team for the past four years. I still remember her

The York boys basketball team got plenty of work in during its permitted 25 contact days this summer.

While York did not go to an out-oftown team camp this season, it was plenty busy on the shootout circuit.

York played in shootout events at UIC, Ridgewood and Riverside-Brookfield. The Dukes also played games at Leyden and once again competed in the Riverside-Brookfield summer league.

“We had a good summer,” said York coach Vince Doran. “I thought we really improved from the beginning of June to the end of the month. We really got better. Some of the teams that we saw who beat us early, we came back and were either competitive with them or beat them the second time around. We got better from beginning to end and that’s always a good sign.”

Doran said the team was excited to see Nick Kosich and Michael Pedote back in camp in various forms of activity. Both are coming off knee injuries.

“I liked the way the guys worked,” he said. “Nick was healthy by the end of June coming off his knee surgery.

Michael Pedote was no-contact during the summer, but he’s also coming off a knee injury. Those two guys will be key contributors and it’s good to have them back. Nick is back already and hopefully Michael will be back by the fall all the way. Nick was able to have contact the last few weeks of June.”

Doran saw progress occur on both sides of the ball. “We focused more

this summer on developing our offensive skills,” he said. “We did a lot of shooting and we got much better.

That’s an area that has improved a lot for us. We’re getting a lot more comfortable offensively. Hopefully we can pick up where we left off at the end of June. If we do that, we are going to be in good shape. I thought we also got better defensively. We’re a little more comfortable with guys playing certain spots, especially with some guys not having varsity experience. They got that experience here in June and that is going to pay off for us when the season begins.”

Doran also liked the efforts of senior veteran Angelo Martucci. “Angelo played very well this summer,” said Doran. “He will be a key contributor along with Nick and Mike. Erik Cohn and Sam Walsh also are back and they will really help us as well. Both of them continue to improve.”

Doran was impressed with the play of two young players in Nate Shockey, a sophomore, and freshman Jeff Grace—both played with the varsity during the summer.

“I thought our two youngest players improved quite a bit,” he said.

“Both are really talented players who will be able to help us. We know we have a great nucleus coming back and a couple new faces who will be contributors. We’re looking forward to an exciting season, for sure.”

Doran noted York’s signature Jack Tosh Holiday Classic tournament, which has 32 teams, will welcome new entrant Andrew out of Tinley Park. Andrew replaces De La Salle, which is going to play in California over the holidays.

Battery reported at hospital Hahsahn Haygood, 46, of the 2100 block of South 4th Avenue, Maywood, was charged with aggravated battery at 10:12 p.m. July 5 at Elmhurst Hospital, 155 E. Brush Hill Rd., after reportedly punching a doctor for not admitting him. Police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital for the report of a fight-in-progress. An investigation is ongoing.

ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK There was a captive audience in the Illinois House Thursday, July 6, for the historic override vote of the governor’s tax hike and budget vetoes after the Capitol building was put on lockdown.

Just as the House was preparing to gavel in Thursday, an announcement came over the statehouse gallery sound system telling people to stay put. The Capitol was on lockdown.

Some state lawmakers, their staff and even the state comptroller weren’t allowed into the Capitol for about two hours.

Members of the public and media inside the statehouse were told to stay in their location for about two hours during the lockdown. During that time, Reps. Will Davis and Theresa Mah gathered snacks from lawmakers on the floor and tossed them up to a group of young children visiting the capitol for a field trip.

Secretary of State Capitol Police Sgt. Mike Moore said authorities were investigating “an unknown substance.” Responders in full

hazmat suits were seen scouring the governor’s office, under furniture and elsewhere. An unidentified woman was placed into custody.

“Springfield Fire Hazmat was contacted and responded to the scene.

The substance was declared not to be a hazard,” Moore said. “Springfield Fire did deem the building [suitable] to reopen and reoccupy the building.

We do have one female in custody at this time. It is an active investigation.”

The woman reportedly dispersed a suspicious substance near the governor’s office and other locations.

In such incidents, Springfield Fire Marshal Chris Richmond said hazardous material crews investigate the suspected substance while law enforcement investigates the suspect.

“Often they reach out to the FBI and other Homeland Security assets to gather information on individuals involved while our hazmat team gathers evidentiary information,” Richmond said. He couldn’t confirm if the FBI was on location Thursday.

The initial review of the substance was found to not be hazardous but was sent to an off-site lab. No further information was available about the suspect in custody.

Local pub restaurant welcomes new brewmaster The owners of Elmhurst Brewing Company, a microbrew pub currently under construction at 171 No. Addison, has introduced its new brewmaster, Cam Horn, an industry veteran and pioneer of Texas’ craft scene.

“His deep expertise in the intricacies of the brewing process and passion for experimenting will serve Chicagoland’s beer lovers well,” said Frazer Donaldson, who co-owns the brewery and restaurant along with Pete Dolan.

Both are long-time Elmhurst residents.

Horn, 33, joins Elmhurst Brewing from Franconia Brewing Co., a German-style brewery in the Dallas suburb of McKinney, Texas. Horn became head brewer at Franconia in 2010, where he worked under a fourth-generation brewer who emigrated from Germany. Long before he joined Franconia, Horn was tinkering away at home with a brewing system he built himself in 2005.

“We couldn’t be more excited about Cam, from his creative spirit and commitment to quality, to his overwhelming enthusiasm for making great beer,” said Donaldson. The restaurant is expected to be open by autumn 2017.

“I am looking forward to making beers that connect with the community - by using local ingredients, by collaborating with other brewers and developing a lineup that will please the palates of all our patrons,” said Horn.

“Coffee, vanilla, exotic fruits and spic-

es, casks and barrel-aged beers are just some of things we’ll be trying.”

Second gala planned to support Performing Arts Centre The committee spearheading the Elmhurst Performing Arts Centre (ECPA) has announced the 2nd Annual Spotlight Gala, “Building Momentum,” which be held Saturday, September 30 at the Elmhurst Art Museum.

Guests will enjoy an evening of music, song, and dance combined with a gourmet buffet, bar, and live auction, while supporting the community’s endeavor

to establish itself as a new venue for the performing arts.
