Elmhurst D205’s Innovation Team was selected to present at the 2019 Act for Impact Model Schools National Conference in Washington D.C. on June 23-26.

D205 joined more than 5,000 educators and 25 model schools and innovative districts for more than 100 sessions with the common goal of transforming learning.

As an eight-member team, D205’s presentation, A Systems Approach: Innovation in Schools, was well received.

Elmhurst History Museum is celebrating summer and the old-school amusement park experience with a FREE Family Fun Fair on the museum grounds on Friday, July 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. Pack a picnic dinner and round up the kids and neighbors for an evening of old-fashioned fun for all ages.

Planned activities at the Family Fun Fair include: • Children can ride a trackless train and mini-Ferris wheel.

Code Ninjas teaches kids coding, game-building, other STEM activities Grand opening takes place Friday

A mother of two, Trivedi is a long-time swim instructor and realtor in the Elmhurst area and loves contributing to children’s growth and development. Growing up in India, Trivedi had a single computer class weekly, providing her with a basic knowledge of computers, but she wishes that an opportunity, like Code Ninjas, was available to her then. She’s eager to enhance the time children already spend on their technology by teaching them through STEM education.

“Coding is the language of the 21st Century,” said Trivedi. “Code Ninjas is able to keep children engaged while they’re learning, which is half the battle. Once they love what they are doing, a passion is born. That passion can easily lead to a career in the STEM industry -- a field that has more jobs every day.”

Lights for Liberty Vigil coming Friday to oppose detention camps Late Monday, York High School social studies teacher Lindsey DiTomasso advised the Independent that local Elmhurst organizations like Progressives for Change and the Elmhurst League of Women Voters would gather in Salt Creek Park on Friday, July 12 from 8:30-9:15 p.m. for a “Lights for Liberty Vigil.” The purpose of the vigil is to advocate for the end of detention camps. Salt Creek Park is located at 574 W. 2nd.

According to DiTomasso, there are many other vigils taking place throughout the U.S. for the National Lights for Liberty event.

EECC to honor its veterans next Wednesday

JAMES WILSON, 65 James “Jim” Franklin Wilson, of Plainfield, formerly of Elmhurst, died on June 14, 2019 at the age of 65. Mr. Wilson was born to Frank and Dorothy Wilson on June 1, 1954 in Elmhurst. Jim grew up in Elmhurst and graduated from York Community High School in 1973. After working various jobs, he attended Western Illinois University, where he graduated in 1980 with a degree in Education/Physical Education.

Jim married Elizabeth Strowmatt in Alton on April 25, 1981. They had two children: Amanda Kathleen and Erin Elizabeth. Jim worked for Elmhurst-Chicago Stone Company 19812017 first as a laborer at the Elmhurst quarry and then as supervisor at the Barber’s Corners Quarry on Royce Road in Bolingbrook. He worked for Vulcan 2018-2019 at Barber’s Corners. Jim was a friend to all, and a stranger to none. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Elizabeth; children Amanda (Damon) Beadles and Erin (Graham) Shaw; grandchildren Savannah and Olivia Beadles, and Ethan Shaw; sisters Carol Wilson (Charlie Mullen) and Nancy Wilson and his nieces and nephews. Code Ninjas will serve the local area by teaching children computer coding and problem solving skills while having fun building video games.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on July 12 at 12:30 p.m. with the attendance of the Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Morley. The grand opening celebration will follow on July 27 at the center. For those who make an appointment ahead of time there will be a free 30 minute coding session. The center will also be open for families to explore and get more of a sense of what Code Ninjas Elmhurst has to offer. There will be STEM activities and outdoor games for all attendees.

an emergency vehicle, no driver’s license and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Second at around 1:12 a.m.

Jennifer Sosa, 39, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 11:17 p.m.

Assault, battery

June 30 Police said that while investigating a complaint of a domestic disturbance in the 100 block of Linden at around 1:09 p.m., Margaret Schmidt, 19, of Elmhurst, became violent and punched a reporting officer in the chest.

Schmidt was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and resisting arrest.

June 29 The victim, an assistant manager at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller, told police at around 8:35 a.m. that he observed William Reese, 74, of Des Plaines, allegedly stealing wooden pallets from the loading dock area.

The victim confronted the suspect. Police said Reese threatened to kill the victim and his mother, then drove a vehicle over the curb and toward the victim and two other witnesses.

Haley Gase, 22, of Chicago, was a passenger in the vehicle, according to police. The suspects were located and stopped near York and Arthur. Reese was charged with aggravated assault and theft. Gase was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Criminal damage

July 2 A victim in the 200 block of E. Columbia told police at around 12:49 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) threw a piece of concrete through the back window of his vehicle, which caused the window to shatter. Video surveillance showed a suspect riding a bicycle in the driveway at 12:45 a.m. The suspect left the camera’s view, at which time the sound of breaking glass was heard.

June 26 A victim in the 300 block of W. Grand told police at around 3:09 p.m. she arrived at work at a car dealership at around 7 a.m. June 25 and parked her vehicle. When she left work, she noticed her side-view mirror was missing.

Video surveillance shows a landscaper mowing the lawn in the 300 block of W Grand. The side view mirror was recovered in the area where the lawn bag was emptied. Further investigation is pending.

Disorderly conduct

June 30 Police said Benjamin Lefevre, 32, of Elmhurst, was located in the 100 block of E. First highly intoxicated and unable to care for himself. Lefevre was charged with disorderly conduct.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disturbance

June 29 A victim in the 300 block of W. St. Charles told police at around 10:31 p.m. that while driving through Elmhurst, she and suspect were arguing, and the suspect allegedly struck her. July 4 Kelly W. Palmiter, 42, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia in the 100 block of Pick at around 6:28 a.m. Police said Palmiter was located behind the wheel of his vehicle and was found to be intoxicated.

July 3 Marlena N. Sadowicz, 23, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI in the 500 block of S. Washington at around 11:50 p.m. According to police, a complainant related that they observed the Sadowicz driving erratically and without headlights on I-290 and subsequently followed the vehicle to the above location. Officers arrived at the scene and Sadowicz was found to be under the influence of alcohol, police said.

June 30 Lennin Oliva Bailon, 22, of Bensenville, was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and improper lane usage near Grand and Lake at around 1:05 a.m. Police said the suspect was intoxicated and stated that he struck a light pole.

Police said that subsequent to a report of a driver slumped behind the wheel near Grand and Lake at around 7:48 a.m., a reporting officer made contact with the occupants and found they had all fallen asleep while in traffic. According to police, upon further investigation, it was found that Matthew Szyska, 21, of Chicago, was driving while under the influence of alcohol. He was charged with DUI and improper parking in a roadway.

Theft was reported at a restaurant in the 900 block of N. York at around 11:28 a.m. A complainant stated an unknown suspect(s) took two chairs, a table, and umbrella that were placed in front of the restaurant. A check of surveillance footage shows a vehicle pull in front of the restaurant, then leave after 5 minutes in an unknown direction.

June 29 Kwamaine Person, 23, of Matteson, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Michigan at around 12:31 a.m.

June 28 Yolanda Coleman, 48, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 11:33 p.m.

June 26 A victim told police at around 6:45 a.m. that he left his work van parked in the parking lot of Elmhurst Hospital overnight. Upon returning to his van, he noticed an unknown suspect forced entry through the side cargo door of the van.

July 1 A victim at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller told police at around 12:12 a.m. that last week, as she was leaving work, a dark colored SUV occupied by four male teens yelled and cursed at her. On the above date, as she was leaving work, the same vehicle occupied by four male teens yelled and cursed at her again. The victim followed the suspect vehicle, and when both vehicles were stopped in traffic, the suspect driver and a passenger exited their vehicle, yelled obscenities, approached the victim’s vehicle, and attempted to grab the door of the victim’s vehicle. An investigation is pending.

July 1 Kawann Moore, 34, of Chicago, was charged with obstructing identification, driving while license suspended, driving without headlights and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Holly and Sherman at around 3:19 a.m.

July 4 Janae A. Badillo, 25, of Oak Lawn, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of cannabis, unlawful use of an electronic communication device and no insurance near North and Melrose at around 1:17 a.m. Police said Badillo was observed texting while driving. The officer made contact with Badillo and detected the odor of burnt cannabis coming from inside of the vehicle, according to police. Police said Badillo was found to be in possession of more than 10 grams of cannabis.

July 3 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 11:14 p.m., an officer detected the odor of burnt cannabis coming from inside of the vehicle. According to police, Benjamin Chavez, 29, of Blue Island, was found to be in possession of three partially smoked cannabis blunts. He was issued citations for possession of cannabis and no seat belt.

July 2 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop

near North and Emery at around 9:06 p.m., officers detected the odor of burnt cannabis coming from inside of the vehicle. According to police, Ronald E. Robertson, 21, of Maywood, admitted to being in possession of cannabis, which he voluntarily provided to officers. A search of the vehicle yielded suspect Xanax® and Valium® pills, police said. Robertson was taken into custody and was transported to the police station where he was later released without charges, pending lab results for the controlled substance pills, police said. Robertson was issued citations for possession of cannabis, no front registration plate displayed and tinted windows.

July 1 Police said officers responded to North and Route 83 at around 10:40 p.m. for the report of an intoxicated subject. The complainant related that the suspects entered a vehicle and left the area. Officers located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The suspects were found to be in possession of heroin, crack pipes, used syringes and cooker kits. Suspect 1 was taken into custody and transported to the police station. Medics transported suspects 2 and 3 to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment. Suspects 2 and 3 were subsequently released from the hospital and were transported to the police station. All of the suspects were released without charges pending further investigation.

June 28 Victor Rodriguez, 18, of Addison, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 2:51 a.m.

June 27 Fred C. Kaminski, 65, of Westmont, was charged with possession of cannabis and no seat belt, while Dennis Cermak, 18, of Clarendon Hills, was charged with possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 6:29 p.m.

June 28-June 29 A victim in the 1000 block of N. County Farm told police that an unknown suspect broke into an equipment trailer which was parked outside a job site in the above area sometime between the above dates.

July 5 Commercial burglary was reported at a mobile phone store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 1:47 a.m. Police said officers responded to the store for a burglar alarm. The window appears to have been smashed and fresh pry marks were observed on the door of the business. It appears that multiple phones were missing.

March 25-July 4 Theft was reported at a business in the 600 block of N. York. Police said that on March 25, the complainant brought an Apple iPad to Gadgets Express for repair. Since that date, the complainant has been unable to contact anyone at the business. Numerous attempts were made to contact the business both in person and via telephone with no results. On July 4, the reporting officer went to the store and found the business had vacated the premises and left no forwarding information.

June 29-July 1 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 1000 block of N. County Line between the above dates. Police said an electric company was completing work on County Line Road. Sometime between the above dates, an unknown suspect(s) burglarized two of their vehicles and attempted to burglarize one of their trailers. A cargo truck was entered and tools were stolen. A cargo truck had the passenger door window smashed out. A trailer was damaged in an attempt to gain entry.

June 5-July 1 Forgery was reported in the 200 block of N. York. A reporting officer spoke to the assistant finance director of a business who stated a check was forged and cashed. It was later found that the check had been fraudulently cashed. Further investigation is pending.

June 29 Identity theft was reported at a car dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand at 5 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect described as a black male purchased two vehicles using information, which later returned flagged for fraud. An investigation is pending.

Residential burglary was reported in the 200 block of E. North at around 9:22 a.m. A victim told police that a listed suspect entered her home without authorization and stole cash, credit cards, and other property. The suspect made unauthorized charges on the victim’s credit cards. An investigation is pending.

June 28 Theft was reported in the 900 block of S. York at around 6:26 p.m.

July 1 Residential burglary was reported in the 900 block of Spring at around 1:46 p.m. A victim told police that he was approached by a solicitor offering to do home repair work. The victim allowed the unknown suspect into his house to obtain water. Once inside the residence the suspect tampered with the victim’s wallet then hurriedly left the residence. The victim inspected his wallet and noticed he was missing cash.

Online quizzes: You could spend days doing them I admit I have taken a Facebook quiz or two. Not so much lately, but back in the early days when I was naïve and innocent, I played along. Now we know many online quizzes simply are ways to get our information, mainly to sell us stuff, nothing truly sinister, but I do not click and play these days.

But the world still does. A simple Google search of “funny online quizzes” popped up 559,000,000 results.

One site, livingly.com/quiz has the standard “Which Disney Villain are you?” to a more targeted “Which Sidekick from Disney’s Aladdin are you?”

They also can reveal “Which Meghan Markle are you?

Humanitarian? Actress? Royal?” and “Tell us your workout preferences and we’ll tell you what celeb you should marry.” The photo accompanying that quiz title shows Bradley Cooper. I don’t think my workout preferences will bring Bradley into my life. Or yours. But go for it, and let me know what happens!

You also can try “This Rapid Fire Quiz Will Reveal Whether You’ll Find Summer Love: Just 50 questions stand between you and your destiny.” Just 50 questions of my time and the internet will lay out my fate. Hmmm. I found summer love already and I married him.

Summer – picnic on the beach, or boot camp?

It happens every year. After months of anticipation, the last day of school finally arrives. The kids are overjoyed.

Summer stretches out before us like a vast and inviting beach scene.

Sounds peaceful, doesn’t it?

It doesn’t take long to realize there are obstacles crowding my view of the lapping water and white sand: towels strewn on the bathroom floor, T-shirts littering the hallway, dirty socks in many creative and out-of-the-way places, backpacks still overstuffed from the last day of school with crumpled papers, broken crayons and one winter boot, syrup-encrusted dishes on the kitchen table (never in the sink), candy and drink wrappers hither and yon across the lawn and bikes lying quietly in wait behind my minivan.

After about three days of this, my summer vacation beach attitude has been extinguished, annihilated – in other words, sucked completely dry.

My normally calm voice takes on a bellowing tenor, and I hear myself using phrases like, “It’s my way or the highway!”

I turn into a drill sergeant --passing judgment, handing down orders and blowing my whistle (well, I would if I had one).

This is no longer a picnic on the sand. We have entered a zone known by a short, two-syllable, snap to attention kind of phrase: “Boot camp!”

I need say it only once, and my kids know they are no longer on the pristine shoreline with a pineapple smoothie in their hands. They are in a land where responsibility is king, and rules are

meant to be kept.

This year, I decided not to wait for three days of chaos to zap my summertime spirit. I made a preemptive maneuver and instituted boot camp on day one of summer vacation, while my calm voice and patient demeanor were both more or less intact.

It isn’t as bad as it sounds. We still run through the sprinkler, eat freezies and sit on the living room sofa in our wet swimsuits. Summer is meant to be fun. Boot camp just means we are paying a little extra attention to where our freezie wrappers end up – on the grass or in the garbage.

We started boot camp with a brief discussion on chores. They were eager to start. I wasn’t fooled. Their positive attitude only demonstrated their lack of knowledge regarding household responsibilities.

Simply put, chores mean work. No one likes work, especially a kid on summer vacation. I assigned them each a household task based on age and ability. “Can we start today?” asked the 6-year-old, who’d been assigned to keeping the fridge stocked with freezies.

Next we reviewed our house rules.

We talked about basic things like, “Respect others and things.” “Be kind.” And, “No littering.” They all nodded in agreement with the rules.

This is because they weren’t really thinking about them; they were still excited about getting to do chores.

And then, it was time to play. It is summer, after all. They went off in different directions to find their own summer fun. It wasn’t long before the 6-year-old returned, visibly excited.

“I have another rule,” he practically bubbled.

“What’s that?” I asked, half paying attention.

“Don’t hold Legos when you’re sitting on the toilet!”

I never would have thought of it myself (in a million years), but had to admit it was a pretty good rule.

“Oh, and you need to get the plunger,” he added. “And can I have a freezie?”

“Sure,” I said. “And take enough for your brothers, they’ll be wanting one, too.”

I thought about going to look for the plunger, but reached for the fridge instead. I pulled out a freezie, snipped open the plastic, popped it in my mouth and went out to join the kids.

Boot camp could wait – at least until after lunch. For now, the surf was calling.

Brian E. Wagner legacy shines on three scholarship recipients Since Brian Edwin Wagner’s untimely death in a tragic auto accident at age 16, his life story and legacy have contributed to the well-being of many young lives in the Chicagoland suburbs. Emerging young leaders who are selected for the scholarship that bears his name receive $2,500 towards their college tuition for their admirable qualities and potential to lead the way among their peers.

Brian was the quintessential model of compassion who lead by example through volunteer service. His commitment to making a difference in all his endeavors is the inspiration behind the non-profit organization that was founded in his memory. The BEWSF’s mission is to encourage high school students to make a positive impact in their lives and the lives of others by exercising sound judgment and committing themselves to volunteer programs. The cause is alive and thriving in the community.

Three recipients were selected for this year’s honor for their relentless journey towards success. They have been proudly acknowledged for their talents to inspire others. All have followed in Brian’s footsteps and opened doors for future applicants to do the same. Next year will mark the tenth year of operation for the BEWSF. So far the scholarship has donated more than $60,000 in college tuition funding to numerous deserving scholars. YMCA of Metro Chicago, Google bring online safety workshops, resources The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago is teaming up with Google to host workshops for parents to help teach families about online safety and digital citizenship with its Be Internet Awesome (BIA) program and help families create healthy digital habits with the Family Link app.

The one-hour workshops are free and focus on BIA’s Internet Code of Awesome: Be SMART, ALERT, STRONG, KIND and BRAVE. Families learn to teach their children how to communicate responsibly, understand real from fake in the face of phishing and scams, build strong passwords, be positive and kind online, talk about questionable content with their family, and why building healthy tech habits is important. The workshops give parents access to free bilingual resources, answers to questions about online safety and digital citizenship, and information to help facilitate discussions at home.

Old Elmhurst: Personal recollections of a native: Part 4 A history provided by Dr. Frederick H. Bates

[Editor’s note: The Elmhurst Independent has been given the opportunity to bring stories of local history to its readers, courtesy of the Elmhurst History Museum. These stories, taken from a publication called “Old Elmhurst,” were printed serially in the Elmhurst Press, during the winter of 1919 and 1920. The Independent will print Dr. Bates’ recollections periodically in its upcoming issues. For the most part, Dr. Bates’ language has been unchanged, but part of the story has been edited for length.]

When the township was organized in 1850 it was named York in deference to the fact that most of the first setters came from Western New York. The township is perfectly square, Elmhurst being in the extreme north-west corner. Dupage County has nine townships, (Addison, Bloomingdale, Wayne, York, Milton, Winfield, Downers Grove, Lisle, and Naperville) in three rows, York being the first, on the extreme eastern end of the middle row, adjoining Cook County.

This tribe, up to the time of their removal, in 1836, was the dominant power along the southern shores of Lake Michigan, from its first discovery by Father Marquette in 1674. During the War of 1812 they were allied with the British and were responsible for the massacre at Fort Dearborn, August 15, 1812. When the Graue’s and Torodes first came to York Township in 1835 and 1836, there were still small bands of Indians, camping in the woods, but when the tribe located on Skunk River, in Iowa, they disappeared. Two years later, owing to the feeling of hostility by the frontier settlers, they again removed to a reservation in Kansas, comprising 77357 acres of good land and their descendants are excellent citizens, enjoying all of the privileges of civilization.

After completing the purchase of the land my father returned to Ohio, sending his brother-in-law, J.L. Hovey, to take possession of the property, the next spring. He came in May, 1843 and built on house on St. Charles Road, near the south-west

corner of Mrs. Lucy Sturges’ place, opposite the entrance of the Bryan property. This is the highest point for nearly two miles in every direction and gave a commanding view of several sections. My father did not succeed in disposing of his business in Ohio until 1844, coming here, with his family in 1845.

Topography and Geology Standing at a point on the St. Charles Road, about where it is intersected by Cottage Hill Avenue, 70 years ago, an unobstructed view could be had in all directions for several miles. To the south there was no house in sight. The old stone house built by Nicholas Torode just beyond where Twelfth Street intersects York St., (it is still standing and is occupied by his grandson, John A. Torode) could not be seen because of the trees surrounding it. Westward, along the St. Charles Road there were no houses for several miles, to the north, the undulating prairie, without a tree, stretched for three miles, or more, to a little patch of wood-land where Louis Bueske had a claim. A short distance towards the northwest the Graues and Fischers had settled in the woods five or six years before.

Eastward, one could see down the Desplaines Valley as far as the fringe of trees along the banks of the river.

In fact Elmhurst dominates the entire section by reason of its superior elevation. It is not generally known that we are 70 feet higher than the Des Plaines River because the rise is so gradual. From the location, there is a fall towards the creek, of over 20 feet; a mile west, so that Elmhurst is on a ridge, with drainage both east and west. How many of those who read these lines have taken deep inspirations, instinctively, after passing westward through the valley of the Des Plaines up to the higher ground here. Mr. Danforth used to say that he always noticed the difference after he left Proviso.

Fortunately, our fair city has never been invaded by factories; this fact, taken in conjunction with the perfect drainage and excellent water, accounts for the good health of the community. There has never been but two epidemics here, to my knowledge, that were serious: one of diphtheria in 1862 and the epidemic of scarlet fever 16 years ago.

For over 40 years the only cases of typhoid fever here originated from outside sources.

Filipino organization honors Elmhurst Clinic medical assistant Janet Reyes-Macaranas, a registered medical assistant with Elmhurst Clinic, was recently presented with the Philippine Independence Week Committee’s “Humanitarian and Leadership Award.” She received the honor at the Committee’s award ceremony held at the Holiday Inn Chicago Northshore in Skokie on June 15.

A native of the Philippines where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Reyes-Macaranas was recognized for her outstanding service

and involvement with the Filipino community of Chicagoland and the Midwest. She is currently a resident of Villa Park.

Reyes-Macaranas is president of the “We Care Cabusao Foundation” in Cabusao, Camarines Sur, Philippines. The group’s many humanitarian projects include three medical missions to the Philippines since 2013, construction of chapels, distribution of relief goods and school supplies, and monthly activities for children and senior citizens.

Tobacco 21 now in effect in Illinois Residents now must be 21 years old to buy tobacco products in Illinois.

State Senator Suzy Glowiak (D-Western Springs) advocated for the passage of “Tobacco 21” (House Bill 345), which raises the legal smoking age from 18 to 21, prohibiting the purchase of alternative nicotine products, electronic cigarettes and tobacco products by individuals

under the age of 21. The law is now in effect.

“The dangers of smoking are wellknown, but young adults still had access to tobacco products,” Glowiak said. “This new law will help stop addiction at an early age to help save lives.”

Chicago Wildfire playing home games at Elmhurst College

Lacrosse is one sport that continues to gain popularity around the country.

The next sport on deck? How about ultimate Frisbee?

The high-action sport has come to Elmhurst in a big way. There is the Elmhurst Evolution (or Elmhurst Evo as it is commonly referred to) club for boys and girls in grades 9-12, and its younger-kids’ version called MidEvo, which caters to boys and girls in grades 6-8.

Now, the professional game has found its way to town with the Chicago Wildfire of the American Ultimate Disc League setting up shop this season at Elmhurst College.

The Wildfire is about to wrap up its regular season. The team’s final regular-season home game at Elmhurst College takes place Saturday night at 6 p.m. at Langhorst Field against the Pittsburgh Thunderbirds.

Through late last week, Chicago had a 7-4 record and was in second place in the Midwest Division of AUDL. The Wildfire have clinched one of 10 available AUDL playoff spots.

AUDL was established in 2012 and the Wildfire, then known as the Windy City Wildfire, joined in 2013, using Chicago Lane Tech High School as its initial home field. The team moved to the suburbs and used North Central College as its home base before landing at Elmhurst College where Wildfire General Manager CJ O’Brien has been very happy with the facilities and relationship with the college.

“Things have been going really well,” O’Brien said. “We expect to be there for the next several years at least.”

a couple years before moving into his current management role with the team.

O’Brien grew up in Batavia and played football there during his childhood. He had an opportunity to play football in college, but chose to focus on academics at the University of Illinois. “I needed something to stay in shape and that’s where I learned about ultimate Frisbee. I tried out for the Illinois club team. It was pretty competitive. In college, it’s a club sport, but just about every college has a team. We traveled on weekends to Tennessee and Texas, and flew to Las Vegas. We were going across the country playing in these big tournaments that were extremely competitive.”

O’Brien said while the sport continues to grow, there still needs to be further education on it. The sport is now an International Olympic Committee-recognized entity and is eligible for inclusion in the Olympics. O’Brien said if he had to hazard a guess, the first foray would be in 2028.

“It’s been fun being a part of the sport, but there still are people who don’t know a lot about it,” he said.

“When I graduated from college my personal hope was it would get into the Olympics or be a pro sport so I could look back on it and say, ‘I used to do that.’”

O’Brien thinks there are several reasons why the sport is gaining in popularity. “I played football and I loved football, but there is a lot of concern out there now about safety with football,” said O’Brien, who noted one sanctioning body in Illinois has spoken to the Illinois High School Association about the possibility of it becoming a varsity sport.

“There were something like 11 middle school programs in the Chicago suburbs that have discontin-

ued their programs and high-school teams are getting smaller. This is a non-contact sport It’s high-flying with a lot of diving catches and jump-grabs. It’s also something both boys and girls can play.”

O’Brien noted the first pro women’s league started this season and the AUDL is an open league, meaning women can play in it. He also explained many of the youth programs also have the same open division concept.

The Wildfire will play 12 regular-season games this year as part of the AUDL’s Midwest Division that features teams in Minneapolis (Wind Chill), Pittsburgh (Thunderbirds), Madison (Radicals), Detroit (Mechanix) and Indianapolis (AlleyCats). A recent Wildfire game in Minneapolis was the AUDL game of the week that was broadcast on the Stadium Sports television network.

Each team features 30-35 players on a roster, but only 20 can be active for each game, which features 7-on-7 action. Much like football, the goal is to advance the disc (or Frisbee) into the opposing team’s end zone (games are played on football fields) in order to score a point. You cannot run with the disc and must pass it. Once you catch the disc you must slow down into a basketball-like pivot. This year’s Wildfire team has an Elmhurst flavor to it with Von Alanguilan and Cal Tornabene having ties to the city and to York High School.

“Stopping the cycle of addiction will protect our young adults from the numerous early and long-term negative effects of smoking such as early health disease, reductions in lung function, and growth and respiratory problems,” Glowiak said.

“Raising the smoking age is a proven method to reduce smoking rates among our teens.”

This measure was supported by

the DuPage County Health Department, American Lung Association in Illinois, American Cancer Society and American Heart Association along with many others.

Residents urged to get involved in Youth Preparedness Month July is national Youth Preparedness Month, State Senator Suzy Glowiak is urging area residents to take some time to prepare young people for the emergencies and disasters that can happen at any time.

“This month take the time to account for the unique needs of children,” Glowiak said. “In the unfortunate event there is a natural disaster or an emergency; children should know the steps to take to keep themselves and others safe.”

Youth preparedness programs teach young people the proper steps to remain safe during and after a disaster. Some programs even give young people a seat at the table when it comes to developing recovery plans.

Successful stretch for Elmhurst Post 187 American Legion baseball team

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team had a successful recent run, going 3-0 against the Chicago Pirates and Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

The three wins moved Post 187 to 8-5-1 overall.

After a 6-5 win over the Chicago Pirates, Post 187 headed north to Badger High School in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin where it swept a doubleheader from Lake Geneva Post 24.

Ian Steinorth had a run scored and two walks. Ryan Malek also scored a run and walked twice. AJ Parnell had two hits, a run scored and two RBI. Jack Enright had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Tim Bowbin had a hit, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Connor Gwaltney had a hit, two runs scored, two RBI and a walk. Tim Beecroft had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Dave Sykora finished with a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Adam Parat had a hit and a run scored, while Jimmy O’Donnell had a hit, two RBI and a walk.

Elmhurst had nine hits in the game.

Gwaltney, Enright and O’Donnell each doubled. Gwaltney stole two bases.

Ken Slepicka, an Oak Park Fenwick product, was the winning pitcher. He threw a five-inning shutout, allowing only two hits. He threw 41 of 55 pitches for strikes and threw a first-pitch strike to 13 of the 17 batters he faced. He struck out five and walked none and faced two batters over the minimum.

The Muddogs took the nightcap by a 5-1 count. Elmhurst scored a run in the first and plated three more in the fourth and one in the sixth.

Steinorth, a York graduate, had two hits, two RBI and walked once out of the leadoff spot. Parnell had a hit and a run scored. Enright was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Bowbin walked twice and scored a run. Gwaltney had a hit, two runs scored and walked twice. Beecroft had a run scored and walked twice. O’Donnell had an RBI and walked once. Gwaltney, Steinorth and Enright each had a double.

Parnell was the winner for the Muddogs. He went five innings and allowed only four hits, while striking out two. Steinorth pitched the final two innings and struck out one.

Post 187 was slated for a busy beginning of the week with contests against Mt. Prospect Post 525 (Monday at Plunkett in Elmhurst), Barrington Post 158 (at Barrington High School Tuesday) and Beloit, Wisconsin Post 48 at Pohlman Field in Beloit, home to the Class A Beloit Snappers (Wednesday).

Post 187 is slated to open the 11th District American Legion playoffs the week of July 15 at the Carol Stream Legion Post 76 baseball stadium. Carol Stream also is hosting the 2nd Division playoffs. The state playoffs will be hosted by Barrington.

IC Catholic Prep names Fahey new athletic director St. Patrick High and Benedictine grad most recently worked at UIC

IC Catholic Prep’s new athletic director has built quite a resume in a short amount of time.

Michael Fahey is the new leader of the Knights’ athletic department, replacing Adam Nissen, who departs after a brief stay at the school. Nissen was hired in the summer of 2017.

Fahey most recently was the special assistant to the University of Illinois at Chicago men’s basketball head coach. He held that position for two years. He also was the UIC women’s basketball director of operations during his first year at the school.

“I wanted to get to the high school level, be involved in athletics and get some stability,” Fahey told the Independent. “I want to stay somewhere long-term. I got married in 2017 and we’re expecting our first child this September. This is a great long-term career move.”

Prior to working at UIC, Fahey was the video coordinator for the Chicago Sky of the Women’s National Basketball Association. He also worked at Lewis University in Romeoville and was video coordinator for the DePaul University women’s basketball program from 2013-2015.

Fahey got his start in college athletics in a big way, where he was the video coordinator for the University of Tennessee women’s basketball team during legendary coach Pat

Summitt’s final season at the helm.

“I was extremely fortunate to be able to get a good start in college,” Fahey noted. “It was great to be around that atmosphere and be part of that type of program.”

Fahey is a graduate of Chicago St. Patrick High School. He played basketball at Benedictine University in Lisle.

Fahey said he was impressed with IC Catholic Prep from the get-go.

“When I walked in there, the feeling I got being on campus was really good,” he said. “It’s a Catholic environment that I am used to. There is a very strong family atmosphere with the faculty and staff. One of the original reasons I got into coaching basketball was to instill values and discipline and work ethic that players could take with them later in life.

There is a strong value system in place and I want to continue that in the athletic director’s role.”

Fahey also was impressed with the current coaching staffs. “As an example, Bill Krefft has done an amazing job with the football program,” he said. “There are so many different IC Catholic Prep alumni coaching in their respective sports at the school.

That tells a great story of alumni coming back and wanting to help our current student-athletes.

“There has been a lot of success in football and some other sports such as soccer and softball. I’m looking forward to getting these other sports, who continue to do a great job, to

those same levels. I’m getting my feet wet and hitting the ground running. I look forward to building relationships and to continue building on the successes we’ve had.”

Fahey is looking forward to sitting down with each head coach. “I want to be on the same page with them,” he said. “I want to get their wish lists and get their pictures of success and see how they compare to my pictures of success.”

IC Catholic Prep’s new athletic director added the school is in good hands with Director of Marketing and Communications David Terry, and looks forward to working with him as well. “He has a tremendous amount of experience and I would like us to come up with a strong social media plan for the athletic department and on a team-by-team basis,” he said.

Fahey added he also lucked out in having a former IC Catholic Prep athletic director to confer with.

That’s Tom Schergen, who recently was named the school’s new principal after being its president prior to being athletic director.

“I’m going to lean on Tom,” said Fahey. “He had very successful years here. He’s in the building over from me. I’m going to check things out with him. To have him be a role model for me, is a tremendous opportunity.”

Fahey can’t wait to get the ball rolling full-force. “I’m tremendously blessed to be here,” he said. “This

is a family atmosphere and I look forward to being part of that family and help in any way I can. The people here are awesome. I’m totally thrilled to be here. I’m going to hit

the ground running. I know it’s going to be a trial by fire, but the people here couldn’t be more helpful.

I’m fortunate to be surrounded by great people.”

IC Catholic Prep names Fisher new girls basketball coach Veteran coach enjoyed major success at Walther Christian in Melrose Park

In recent years the IC Catholic Prep girls basketball program has been no stranger to success.

And ditto for its new girls basketball coach.

The Knights recently named former Walther Christian coach Todd Fisher to lead their girls basketball program. Fisher replaces Kelsey James.

Fisher had been the head girls basketball coach at Walther Christian (nee Lutheran) since 2000.

“We’ve had some good teams over the years at Walther, but so has IC,” Fisher told the Independent. “I was at Walther for more than 21 years and sometimes someone just needs change. I’ve been coaching against

IC for a long time and I know the type of athlete IC has. I know what the climate and culture and environment of the schools is like. To be able to get in there and teach and coach is very exciting. I’m excited about the opportunity.”

Fisher will teach business and technology at ICCP. During a highly successful run at Walther, Fisher went 389-199 since the 1999-2000 season. His first team went 1-17 and his last this past season went 28-1 and won conference and regional titles.

In 2013, Fisher’s Walther team took fourth in the state in Class 2A. His 2006-2007 team also took fourth in the state in Class A, while his 2005-2006 squad made the Class A state quarterfinals.

Fisher’s last three Walther teams went a combined 79-10. The veteran coach also has won a bevy of coach of the year honors ranging from conference to IBCA District 7, where he has won the last three honors and nine total under that banner.

“The coaches at IC going back to Dan Murray and Aubrey (Lawrence) are friends of mine on and off the court,” said Fisher, referencing ICCP’s two head girls basketball coaches prior to James. “They always said great, positive things about the school. I grew up in Naperville and always heard good things about the school. It’s a thrill for me to be here.”

Fisher said the Knights conducted a series of open gyms as part of their summer session.

“We have good, veteran leader-

ship,” he said. “We played them in the regional championship game and had scouted them pretty hard in the weeks and days leading up to playing them. We knew that game would not be easy by any stretch of the imagination. I told our kids you have to respect IC because they play hard all the time. There never is any letup in their play. They get after it on defense, which I love playing tempo, by the way.”

“The one thing I saw this summer is the desire and drive to get better.

In talking to the kids we’re all on the same page in regards to what we want to do with defense and tempo and what kind of offense we want to run. There will be some similarities and some differences. We are going to get after it on defense and push it

in transition as much as possible and play a fast, up-tempo pace. We want to be in better shape than the other teams as much as possible. We don’t want to slow the pace down. I know they pressed a lot last year and I like to press when it’s time to. I like a fast-tempo game and I like teams that get after it on defense.”

Fisher added he’s in it for the long haul. He’s the Knights’ third girls basketball coach in less than a decade. “Walther was my first job out of college,” he said. “I love stability. I’m also a loyal guy. I like loyalty. Walther gave me my start and now I am very grateful to be here at IC Catholic Prep. I’m in this for the long haul.

“I’m excited to be part of this group and I’m excited that we are going to do this together.”

York student-athletes load up on awards in and out of classroom May and Milling named outstanding senior athletes

As is customary, the York Athletic Boosters Club presented their student-athlete awards, covering the recently completed 2018-2019 school year.

Sarah May, a standout track and cross-country runner, was the recipient of the outstanding senior female athlete of the year honor.

John Milling, a three-sport athlete, was named the senior male athlete of the year. Milling played football, basketball and baseball.

Melissa Cartis was named the Val Cothern junior female athlete of the year award winner. Cartis stars on the York girls tennis team.

Josh Mathiasen was named the Tom Bash junior male athlete of the year.

Mathiasen plays football and wrestling.

JoJo Meyer (softball) and Luke Cunningham (boys basketball) were the recipients of the Paul and David student manager award.

Milling and Isaac Marlot were cited for being four-year three-sport athletes.

Marlot competed in soccer, swimming and water polo, while Milling did football, basketball and baseball.

A total of 30 student-athletes were recipients of the Clarence D. East academic award. Those 30 individuals were in the top five percent of the senior class academically.

Special athletics awards were given to boys basketball players Nick Kosich and Erik Cohn, who both went over the 1,000-career-point mark at York.

Kosich became the fifth player in York history to do so and Cohn the sixth.

Spring Sports Awards For the spring season, Coco Conrardy, Eva Jacobsthal, Natalie Krauter, Sarah Marlich and Susan Vaughey were all-academic selections in badminton.

Conrardy was all-West Suburban Conference Silver Division in badminton, while Rachel Kayman, Regan Toole, Aleksina Jovic and Grace Wilton were state qualifiers. York’s badminton team won a sectional title.

In baseball, Carl Baker, Timothy Bowbin, Daniel Brown, Daniel Chrisman, Kellen GIlmartin, Joe Goehl, Clayton Letourneau, Milling, Joe Orrico, Ryan Ross, Anthony Scalzitti, Ian Steinorth and Bo Thomas were all-academic picks. Bowbin and Gilmartin were all-WSC Silver Division selections, along with Ross and Thomas.

For boys gymnastics, Joseph Brown, Simon David, Sean Tiberi and Jefrin Joseph were all-academic picks. Tiberi and Charlie Cripe were state qualifiers.

In boys lacrosse, Matt Anikiej, Nick Bingenheimer, Joseph Cornell, Brendan Feeney, James Gallagher, Joseph Guerino, Mitchell Homes, John McGovern, James Owens and Sam Walsh were all-academic selections.

Walsh, Harrison Proud and Cornell were all-conference first-team picks.

Anikiej, Guerino, Homes, Owens, Aidan Gaughn and Ryder Matson were all-conference second-team picks.

Walsh was an all-state pick and was a northern Illinois most valuable athlete nomination, along with a US Lacrosse All-American.

For girls lacrosse, Katherine Clugg, Caroline Fritsch, Marie Grasse, Savannah Mallon, Eileen O’Donnell and

Faith Shiley were all-academic picks.

Fritsch, O’Donnell, Samantha Kraus, Catherine Duhig, Jenna Hughes, Emily Fleckenstein and Elizabeth Bernard were all-conference selections.

Grasse was an all-conference at-large pick.

Duhig, Hughes and Fleckenstein were all-sectional choices with Duhig earning all-state first-team honors.

In girls soccer, the regional-champion Dukes placed Emma Czech, Riley Haug, Kathleen Levins, Allison Milkowski, Ruby Noel, Krystyna Panek, Siena Pinkerton, Lindsey Schiller, Rene Sieracki, Michaela Ward and Maddie Welz on the all-academic team.

Haug, Milkowski, Pinkerton and Welz were all-WSC Silver picks.

Maddie Jeffery and Bridget Los were all-sectional selections, while Levins was all-sectional honorable mention.

For softball, Julia Derkowski, Katherine Karnatz, Lauren Polte, Mishay Sigala, Isabel Smith and Sophia Trajcevski were all-academic selections. Karnatz, Smith, Lauren Derkowski and Sydney Fuglsang were all-WSC Silver selections. Karnatz earned all-state first-team honors, while Derkowski and Fuglsang were

all-state second team, and Smith was all-state third team.

In boys volleyball, Ivan Caballero, Ethan Chael, Aidan Hickey, Joshua Jacob, Mathiasen, Collin McCarville, Sam Pozen, Matthew Reishus, Patrick Reising, Jackson Rosenberg, Hayden Snyder and Riley Wilson earned all-academic accolades. McCarville was all-WSC Silver.

For girls water polo, Claire Blum, Kathryn Caforio, Emma Radcliff and Ademis Siavelis were all-academic, while Moleigh Waldherr was an all-sectional first-team choice. Mikaela Jopes was all-sectional second team, and Radcliff and Emma Stec were all-sectional honorable mention.

For boys water polo, Marlott and Nicholas Ward were all-academic picks. Marlott, Jay Jensen and Carson Hicks were all-WSC selections. Marlott, Ward, Will Yasdick, Jensen and Hicks earned all-sectional honors.

Lombard man dies after 80-foot fall from mountain Austin Howell was ‘free solo’ enthusiast who climbed without gear

The Elmhurst Youth Baseball ‘Colt’ division White Sox played the Fenton High Sschool Bison on Saturday, July 6 at Conrad Fisher Park in Elmhurst.

Lombard resident Austin Howell, a free solo climber, fell to his death from Shortoff Mountain located in North Carolina. Howell was just 31 years old.

A free soloist is a person who likes to climb mountains and other steep heights without using any ropes or safety devices. While extremely risky, Howell always claimed the benefits outweighed the dangers, calling it “the epitome of cool-headed rationality.” He also expressed that safety lies in anyone’s ability to keep calm and make competent decisions.

“As long as the choices we make are commensurate with the skills we take up the wall, then we’re being ‘safe enough,’” Howell said in a blog post he wrote in March.

Rescue authorities confirmed that Howell had died on Sunday, June 30, from injuries sustained when he fell more than 80 feet from Shortoff Mountain in North Carolina, where he had been climbing without safety gear of any kind. One report indicated that Howell sometimes even climbed without clothing.

Rescuers received a call at about 11:45 a.m. on Sunday that a climb-

er had fallen. It took them about 90 minutes to rappel down to Howell’s location. Other climbers were there and had been performing CPR, but officials said he was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m.

Howell worked for a telecommunications company, training technicians to repair cellphone towers, but friends say climbing was his true passion. His mother, Terri Zinke Jackson, said he tried climbing while studying electrical engineering at the University of Houston and quickly loved it and continued it, even after several falls and injuries.

“He explained it as feeling his most free and relaxed and comfortable when he was climbing,” Jackson said. “He fought depression and anxiety and it almost seemed like it was medicating for him to do it.

When Howell damaged his inner ear in a fall, his sense of equilibrium was thrown off and doctors advised him never to climb again, but Howell didn’t follow doctors orders.

“He wasn’t going to let fear get him down,” Jackson said. “He made the choice to continue climbing and started exploring free soloing more.

That’s how we got here.”
