Juvenile charged with stealing car at gunpoint during test drive Alleged incident took place in Crestview Park On Wednesday, June 23, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth announced that Judge Brian Jacobs had ordered that a 17-year-old Lynwood juvenile accused of stealing a vehicle at gunpoint will be detained until at least his next court appearance. The juvenile has been charged with one count of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking (Class X Felony) and two counts of Armed Robbery (Class X Felony).

On Tuesday, June 8, the juvenile and another individual responded to an ad on ‘OfferUP’ in regard to purchasing a vehicle they saw on the site. The victim allegedly met the juvenile and his accomplice at Crestview Park located in the E. Crestview Avenue in Elmhurst. It is alleged that after briefly looking at the vehicle, the juvenile and his accomplice requested a test drive. It is alleged that during the test drive, the juvenile sat in the right rear passenger seat directly behind the victim and the juvenile’s accomplice drove. After traveling a short distance, the juvenile allegedly pulled out a handgun, placed it to the victim’s left temple and said, “Do not do anything stupid or I’ll shoot.” The suspect allegedly patted down the victim and took his wallet, phone and keys before ordering him out of the car.

Once out of the vehicle, the victim flagged down a passing car and used the driver’s phone to call 9-1-1. An investigation conducted by the Elmhurst Police Department led to the juvenile and recovery of the vehicle

which was found approximately 40 yards from the juvenile’s Lynwood residence. An investigation into the matter continues and anyone with information is asked to call the Elmhurst Police Department at (630) 530-3050.

“The allegations that this juvenile put a gun to the head of a man and threatened him with his life before stealing his car are completely outrageous and will not be tolerated in DuPage County, regardless of the accused’s age,” Berlin said.

“I remind the public that if you are selling something over the Internet, take precautions to protect yourself such as always meet during daylight hours in a populated public place that you are familiar with; never meet a prospective buyer alone and if something doesn’t feel right, walk away.

“I commend the Elmhurst Police Department for their outstanding efforts in identifying the juvenile as a suspect in this case for their continued efforts in keeping our neighborhoods safe.”

“I applaud the efforts of our evidence technicians and personnel who did an outstanding job which ultimately led to the identification and apprehension of the suspect in this case,” Chief Ruth added. “I would also like to thank the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office for their legal guidance.”

The juvenile’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 30, in front of Judge Jacobs.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 has announced that work on the Lincoln Elementary School campus is now underway, according to a memo from Beverly Redmond, executive director of Communications and Public Relations for District 205.

Elmhurst Independent sportswriter honored Mike Miazga recognized by Elmhurst Princesses for pushing through the pandemic

It’s not like the Elmhurst Independent to toot its own horn – unless one of its own has earned a place of honor in the community for his particular contributions to a program to which he has given countless hours.

Those who read the Sports section every week will likely recognize the name of sportswriter Mike Miazga, who has brought readers of the Independent its sports news every single week almost since its beginning.

After publication began in September of 2002, Miazga joined the Independent in the spring of 2003 and has not missed a single week since – even when his travels have taken him around the country or around the world.

Sometimes when you grow to depend on someone week-in and weekout for several years, it’s easy to forget they have another life. Miazga’s face lights up when he talks about his family.

“The best thing I ever did in my life was marry my wife Kristin,” he said. “And the second-best thing I ever did was to have Kyleigh.”

The Miazgas just celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary. Kristin is an educator with School District 62 and was recently named Walmart Teacher of the Year. Kristin is a graduate of York high school, where she played softball.

Kyleigh is 13 and will be in the 8th grade at Timothy Christian in the fall.

She and her dad got involved when Kyleigh was in the second grade and meetings were held at the Elmhurst library.

“We finally went on a campout and felt more of a connection with the others,” Miazga said. “After that, they were looking for volunteers and I offered to help.”

Activities of the Princesses Activities of the Elmhurst Princesses include earning patches, service projects such as working at “Feed My Starving Children,” a Christmas party at Enchanted Castle, “camping” overnight at the Field Museum, a Pinewood Derby, and a Daddy-Daughter Dance at River Forest Country Club.

“We also have a tree at the Wilder Park tree-lighting,” he said. “The girls gather there and decorate the tree themselves.”

‘Smartest thing he’s ever done’ After assisting with activities, Miazga went on to take a bigger role in the organization including two stints in a leadership position, and later, two terms as Chairman of the Board.

Miazga says participating in Elmhurst Princesses with Kyleigh is one of the smartest things he’s ever done.

“There’s nothing better to bond a daughter and father than a program like this,” he said. “And I can’t say enough about the importance of building that relationship. My daughter and I have had great experiences that are memories for a lifetime. I can’t stress enough how important that program is for building relationships between daughters and their dads.”

Then along comes COVID-19 The program has been going strong and growing every year, until last year when the pandemic took its toll.

“We found ourselves at a crossroads,” he said. “The groups were getting smaller simply due to natural attrition as well as graduations. Also, it was a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind,’ when we stopped being able to meet and go on our usual activities, it’s easy to let it fall by the wayside.

Orange ribbons appear on the trees

On the morning of Monday, June 28, the Independent was called by some residents asking why there were orange ribbons on all the trees from Grand Avenue all the way down York Road past City Hall and on into the downtown area. After placing several calls to the City, the Chamber of Commerce and City Centre,

the Independent learned it was a fundraiser of some sort, but no one was able to ascertain who or what the funds were for.

If anyone can enlighten us so that we can advise our readers, the Independent would be grateful. Please reply to Independent@RVPublishing. com. It would quell a lot of curiosity and, who knows – could possibly bring in even more funds.

Obituary VICTOR A. BUSH, 92 Victor A. Bush, a longtime resident of Elmhurst, passed away June 23, 2021, at his home at the age of 92. He was the former owner of Bush Upholstery, a past president of the York Athletic Booster Club and was a member of a high school state championship basketball team in Eagle River, Wisc.

Of course, nothing happens by the work of one single person, Miazga noted. He went on to thank some of the other adults who have also taken leadership roles and kept the group going especially during the pandemic.

“Kyle Drewry is the former nation chief (president), who preceded me before my first run,” Miazga said.

“He’s out of the Cheyenne group in Itasca and did a tremendous job of leading the group to a position of high prosperity.

“Rick Smurawski, the current nation chief, is another guy who is passionate about the program and who ended up doing two stints as president due to the pandemic. The organization needs more Kyles and Ricks going forward to maintain its footprint as the greatest youth organization in Elmhurst and Itasca. Two quintessential volunteer leaders -- world-class guys.”

Miazga also mentioned Bob Browne and Greg Pas from his group Kickapoo. [Browne is the person who alerted the Independent that the honor was being presented.]

“Two great dads, guys and friends,” he said. “Notice ‘dads’ is listed first.

Greg was responsible for getting me involved in the group.

“Eric Quas preceded me as longtime patchmaster -- another guy who gave a ton back. Monte Weirman and Mike Schafer still went to our summer campout in June, despite the fact that their girls are going into their freshman year at York in the fall. That’s how much they dig the program.”

He went on to mention other exceptional people he’s met.

“Guys like Matt Lanoue, Charles Hoang, Frank Caputo, Brian Lyons, Ken Luptak,” Miazga said. “Luptak was the guy who made all our meetings during the pandemic possible, many of them virtual, with his tech-

nology skills. Adam Simonds is one of those dedicated, ‘above-and-beyond’ kind of guys. All I can say about Charles Hoang is, he ‘gets it,’ he really ‘gets’ the program.

“Without folks like this, the [Elmhurst Princesses] don’t exist.”

Mayor issues special proclamation Beyond simply taking part in activities with the girls and his various leadership roles, Miazga was given special recognition by the Elmhurst Princesses organization, which prompted Mayor Scott Levin to deliver a mayoral proclamation. Following is a portion of the proclamation: ”WHEREAS, during his leadership tenure Mike Miazga contributed to record growth of and engagement with the Elmhurst Princesses organization, with its membership pre-pandemic approaching 600 fathers and daughters; and “WHEREAS, Mike Miazga has been instrumental in helping to sustain the Elmhurst Princesses organization through the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic; and “WHEREAS, Mike Miazga has distinguished himself as a hard-working, dedicated, diligent and dependable leader and friend, who takes immense pride in the Elmhurst Princesses organization, in the special purpose it serves and in the Elmhurst community, and who is always willing to lend a helping hand when needed.

“NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, I, Scott Levin, Mayor of the City of Elmhurst, do hereby express my sincere appreciation and gratitude for Mike Miazga’s volunteerism, leadership, dedication and commitment to the Elmhurst Princesses organization and to the Elmhurst community.”

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Assault, battery June 23 A complainant in the 600 block of W. Gladys told police at 2:11 p.m. that a suspect pushed him following a verbal altercation. The reporting officer spoke with the suspect who denied pushing the complainant.

Police said that subsequent to a road rage incident near North and Melrose at 5:58 p.m., the victim reported two male suspects exited their vehicle, approached his vehicle, and began threatening him with a knife. Both suspects left the area but were later located in Melrose Park. One suspect was placed under arrest and was transported to the police station. He was released without charges, pending additional investigation.

Criminal damage June 19 Police said officers responded at 9:16 p.m. to a report of suspects who were throwing items off of the south side of the Addison parking deck. The reporting officer did not observe anyone on the top level, nor along the south side of the parking deck. The officer observed three light bulbs were removed from the ceiling of the elevator and were broken on the ground outside.

June 16-June 17 A victim in the 500 block of Cottage Hill told police that an unknown suspect(s) defaced the exterior of her residence and scratched the glass on the front door sidelights.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance June 17 A complainant in the 100 block of W. Virginia told police at 11:27 p.m. that she and her juvenile son were involved in a verbal argument over cell phone privileges. The juvenile related he blocked the door so the complainant could not enter his bedroom. There were no signs of injury to the complainant or her son.

Both subjects were advised to avoid each other for the remainder of the evening.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, illegal possession of alcohol June 20 Renee Kraus, 43, of Wood Dale, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, DUI-drugs, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a vehicle crash near Route 83 and Lake at 5:12 p.m.

North at 3:01 a.m., a juvenile suspect was found to be in violation of curfew and in possession of open alcohol while under the age of 21. The suspect was referred to the peer jury program and was released to the custody of his parents.

Police said the suspect fled the scene on foot.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance June 22 David Martinez, 29; Edgar Meza, 27; and Jose Salazar, 27, all of Chicago, were charged with city ordinance possession of cannabis in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near Park and York at 4:31 p.m.

June 20 Bryce M. Worthy, 24, of Frankfort, was cited for possession of cannabis in a vehicle in the 500 block of W. Grand at 12:43 a.m.

June 19 Paula Fuller, 58, of Windthorst, Texas, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in a vehicle in the 500 block of W. Grand at 7:34 p.m.

Vince H. Garcia, 25, of Chicago, was issued citations for no valid registration, unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Grand at 4:25 p.m.

Police said that subsequent to an investigation of a disabled vehicle near Lake and York at 11:22 p.m., a juvenile driver was found to not have a valid driver’s license and was in possession of cannabis. A juvenile passenger was found to be in possession of tobacco products and cannabis. The driver was cited for no valid driver’s license and unlawful possession of cannabis by driver, and was released on scene to his parent. The passenger will be referred to peer jury and was released on scene to his parent.

June 19 Alexis N. Burgos, 24, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, no valid driver’s license, speeding and transportation of open alcohol subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Berteau at 2 a.m.

June 17 Christina M. Pickle, 35, of Villa Park, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, DUI-drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, no insurance and operating a vehicle while using an electronic communications device subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at 9:58 a.m.

June 18 Wayne L. James, 51, of Addison, was charged with two counts of improper lane usage, DUI, unlawful possession of cannabis by

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 700 block of S. York at 1:04 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) forced entry to his vehicle and removed a brown satchel containing jewelry and cash. This case is pending investigation.

June 21 Edward S. Walker, 38, of Bellwood, was charged with retail theft in the 100 block of Schiller at 4:45 p.m. Police said Walker was found to have concealed groceries in his backpack and left the store without paying for the merchandise.

Fraud was reported in the 200 block of S. West at 4:37 p.m. A complainant told police that a subject was seen dumping items into a dumpster. Several counterfeit bills were located in the dumpster. The bills were collected and placed into evidence. An investigation is pending.

June 15 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 400 block of N. York at 8:11 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed her unattended vehicle’s catalytic converter while the vehicle was parked in the parking lot.

May 28 Credit card fraud was reported in the 1-100 block of Elm Creek at 7:01 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) had compromised his stock trading account and opened a debit card using the victim’s name.

Unemployment benefits identity theft According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported two incidents of identity theft with the intention of using a victim’s personal information to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Warrant arrest June 23 Latodd Kelly, 41, of DeKalb, was found to have a warrant out of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s office near Roosevelt and York at 3:09 a.m. Kelly also was charged with DUI and no valid driver’s license.

Jan. 1-June 20 Theft was reported in the 400 block of E. Lake. A victim’s granddaughter told police that an unknown suspect removed a bronze urn from a family member’s grave at Elm Lawn Cemetery sometime within the past six months. There is no suspect information.

June 22 Police said James Brown, 46, of Bellwood, came into the police station to turn himself in on a warrant through the Illinois State Police at 8:20 p.m.

Police said Christopher Kazmierczak, 26, of Elmhurst, had a warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s office subsequent to a traffic stop near West and Fremont at 6:33 p.m.

Kazmierczak also was charged with driving while license suspended, unlawful possession of medical cannabis in a vehicle, no seat belt and failure to signal when required.

June 19 Deceptive practice was reported in the 700 block of Poplar at 6:45 p.m. A victim told police that while attempting to cancel his annual service fee, a store employee provided an incorrect number to call. The victim called the provided telephone number and provided his banking information for the reimbursement.

The victim discovered two unauthorized transactions were made by an unknown suspect.

The phone number was found to be a scam.

Home invasion on Washington St. remains under investigation

June 18 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at 6:35 p.m. Police said Officers responded to the above location for the report of a retail theft that just occurred. officers located the suspect in the parking lot of the business. The suspect took merchandise and left the store without paying. The manager did not wish to press charges, wanted the items returned, and wanted the suspect issued a no trespass notice. The suspect was referred to Senior Services.

June 17 Retail theft was reported at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North at 8:39 p.m. A complainant told police that two suspects— one a female and one a male; each around 33 years old—concealed liquor and left the store without paying for the merchandise.

Elmhurst police have been investigating a residential burglary that was reported in the .

300 block of S. Washington St. on Thursday, June 24 at 10:30 a.m.

A resident in the 300 block of S. Washington Street reported hearing a person inside of the home. The suspect quickly fled after the resident called out to them. Further investigation revealed the suspect had cut a hole in a window screen, entered through the open window and allegedly removed jewelry.

Neighbors reported seeing a dogwalker around the same time of the burglary. It is unknown if the dogwalker was the suspect. The dogwalker is described as a white male, medium build, in his 40’s, walking a medium-sized black-and-white dog with a harness. .

Another witness described the suspect as a male with a dark complexion, wearing blue jeans, a baseball cap, with a medium-sized black dog. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the suspect. This case is pending investigation.

State’s Attorney files charges against Wheaton woman alleging voter fraud On Friday, June 25, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced that on Monday, June 21, his office filed multiple charges related to election fraud in the 2021 municipal election against Susan Cain, 64, of Wheaton. The charges are the result of investigations conducted by the State’s Attorney’s Office into more than 30 cases of alleged election fraud since the November 2020 general election. While most of those cases have been closed

without charges, the charges against Cain represent the sixth active case.

“I commend DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek and her staff for their efforts in uncovering these alleged violations and bringing them to our attention,” Berlin said.

On June 21, Judge Michael Fleming issued a $1,000 personal recognizance arrest warrant for Cain. Two days later, Cain turned herself in at the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office and was released from custody. She

has been charged with three counts of Forgery and four counts of Perjury in Election Code, all Class 3 Felonies.

It is alleged that on four occasions, Cain completed an online application to vote by mail using the name of another DuPage County resident.

It is further alleged that on three occasions, Cain signed the names of three of those residents on the ballot envelope prior to the ballots being mailed. Cain’s alleged actions were

Pain with a purpose

When I was pregnant, I anticipated the birth of my precious babies, but I dreaded the pain of the actual experience. Hey, I’m human.

But I came to terms with the idea of “labor pains” because I understood the end game. Pregnancy, labor and the physical pain of giving birth, they all lead to a very desired outcome: a beautiful baby – a brand-new life. It is nothing short of a miracle and certainly worth the sacrifice and effort needed to get to the end game of 10 fingers and 10 toes.

So, even though I dreaded the pains of labor, I welcomed them. I called them “pain with a purpose.” Because although the pain was real, it came with a purposeful outcome - a human being. I welcomed this pain with a purpose. I embraced it. I anticipated it with wonder and awe.

I was fortunate to experience this pain on four different occasions. Each time it changed my life for the better.

Pain comes into our life for a reason.

Sometimes it’s to deliver a baby. At other times it’s in the wake of grief.

Recently I’ve experienced this second type of pain.

Like giving birth, it’s hard to describe or imagine unless you’ve been there.

At first grief felt empty. It still does, sometimes. But I’ve come to believe that, like giving birth, grief can be pain with a purpose - if we allow it to be.

Hardships in life come with opportunity. Bear with me. I speak from experience.

Hardships, pain, grief - they provide for a new perspective. The old reality exists no more. It is gone. That can be extremely difficult, but it also comes with a new horizon. The future has changed, but change doesn’t have to be completely devastating. What you had planned is gone but other futures lie before you, if you are willing to accept and embrace them.

Embrace them.

Grief provides an opportunity for growth. In faith. In existence. In being.

For me, it’s provided a new outlook on life beyond life. Most of us have a need to believe in something beyond what we know in the here and now.

Grief has helped me hone my own beliefs and faith.

Have faith.

Pain gives you a new outlook on priorities. What you thought was important might not even register on the radar once you’ve been thrust into true, life-altering pain. That can give you the gift of clarity and help you take your seemingly chaotic life and put it in its most simplistic form. Life priorities become simple when you understand, to your core, what’s really important, Understand what’s important.

Grief has made me, forced me, allowed me, to realize my strength. If I’d known my current path a year ago, I would have said, “There’s absolutely no way I can endure that, much less conquer it.” I didn’t feel weak, but in some ways I was. Grief didn’t allow me to be weak. It forced, helped, allowed me to conquer my own fears.

Conquer your fears.

When my husband first passed on, I read that grief takes who you were and completely morphs you into someone you never could have imagined, pregrief. Your world has changed, so it’s only logical that your very essence changes as well.

Change doesn’t have to be bad - even when it was unplanned and anything but your first choice. Change allows for possibilities and new beginnings. It allows you, in essence, to give birth to a brand new person.

Give birth to the possibilities. Give birth to yourself.

DuPage County relaunches Small Business Grant Program

The DuPage County Board voted Tuesday to allocate $15 million in federal American Recovery Plan Act funds to relaunch Reinvest DuPage, a business grant relief program developed in partnership with Choose DuPage.

The portal opened at 9 a.m. Monday, June 28 at the Choose DuPage website at choosedupage.com.

“When we launched this program at the beginning of the pandemic, we saw a large volume of applications from business owners desperate for help,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “While the recovery has begun,

should be able to make the decision to waive certain fees to allow these businesses to get back to a place of economic security.”

If signed, House Bill 2454 would create an option for local counties and municipalities to waive licensing, permitting, or registration fees for local businesses and services for businesses who demonstrate financial need due to the pandemic.

“Illinois’ hospitality sector alone

provided more than $20 million to the Reinvest DuPage program to help 1,621 struggling small businesses, restaurants, bars, and independent contractors. Those funds came from the Coronavirus Aid, Recovery, and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed

by Congress in 2020. In May, DuPage County received $89 million after Congress passed the American Recovery Plan Act earlier this year.

Senator urges governor to sign measure supporting local businesses As the state begins to recover from the pandemic, State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D- Western Springs) urges Gov. JB Pritzker to sign legislation to help small businesses bounce back from the stresses of the last year.

“Our small businesses need our help easing the financial burdens the last year has put on them,” said Glowiak Hilton, who sponsored the bill in the Senate. “Local governments

many businesses are still hurting. Reopening this grant program was a priority as we seek to fulfill the purpose of this federal program locally and spur economic activity.”

Grants will cover operational expenses for small businesses, independent contractors, nonprofits, and restaurants. Small businesses with annual revenue of $20 million or less can apply for up to $50,000 in relief funds.

Independent contractors with less than $250,000 in annual revenue may apply for $15,000 in relief.

Former Elmhurst alderman passes away Florence ‘Betsy’ Aldred helped facilitate several improvements in the community

The sun isn’t shining quite so brightly in Elmhurst these days since longtime resident Florence “Betsy” Aldred has passed away in the loving presence Florence of her cherished “Betsy” Aldred daughter, Sarah, and her grandsons. She leaves behind a beloved family, countless friends, and a legacy of service to the community she loved so much.

Betsy was born Nov. 17, 1940 in Sandusky, Ohio, to Richard and Helen Bliss. She attended Peoria High School where she took part in many vocal musical groups. She also played the piano beautifully, having been taught by her music teacher mother.

Betsy attended Illinois Wesleyan University before switching to Bradley University in Peoria where she met the love of her life, her husband of 52 years, Dennis Aldred.

Dennis, a life-long Elmhurst resident, brought his bride to his hometown where they raised their family, taking particular pride in their four fine grandchildren, Lucas, Justin,

and Elliot Fleege (whom she called her Princes) and Olivia Berry. Her daughter Sarah, a skilled nurse, deserves special mention for her devoted and loving care of her mother in the last several months of Betsy’s life. They relived the many memorable summers spent with family at the lake house on White Lake in Michigan.

Betsy earned a Bachelor and a Master’s degree in Speech Therapy and had a long and honored career in the field in Lisle and Lyons school districts. She became deeply involved in community affairs. She served as alderman, representing the First Ward on the Elmhurst City Council for 16 years.

As an alderman, Betsy helped facilitate several improvements to the community including downtown redevelopment, acquisition of Lake Michigan water, construction of two parking garages, a new police station and two new fire stations.

Seventh Ward Alderman Mark Mulliner recalled serving with Betsy and being by her side years earlier when both ran as part of the Elmhurst People’s Party.

“It was Betsy that was instrumental in getting me involved in the community as much as I have,” Mulliner told the Independent. “I was with her on the original run as part of the People’s Party ticket. I learned so much just from working with her and Jackie Haddad and I learned so much from [their husbands] Dennis and Emil as well.

“It was quite a team. She really taught me so much about what’s going on in the community. I learned about the community from a different angle. Having grown up here, it was interesting to look at the City with a different focus; that is, learning what we can do to make things better.

“I’m going to miss her. She was a great lady.”

Betsy was a past president of the Elmhurst Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and was active from the start in its Dare to Dream program for young Latina girls. She also served as a vice president of the Elmhurst League of Women Voters.

Jan Dorner and Dorothy McGuire, co-Presidents of LWV Elmhurst, had this to say about Betsy: “Betsy was an energetic and inspiring presence at many LWV Elmhurst events and most recently served on our Board of Officers as First Vice-President.

“She loved registering perspective student voters and enjoyed helping with mock elections at York High School and wanted to have mock elections at Willowbrook, where her grandkids were students.

“She was a great supporter of educating voters by helping at LWV of Elmhurst candidate forums held regularly before elections.”

Fairy, complete with prom dress and used-toothbrush necklace. She loved dressing outlandishly to meet friends at the airport. She maintained a wardrobe of bright, happy kindergarten-teacher sweaters that perfectly represented her personality. She always greeted each friend as if that friend was truly the most important person in her life, with a tilt of the head, a wink and a saucy remark.

Her volunteer efforts were deservedly recognized when she was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) from the Elmhurst Jaycees in 1995. She also merited a chapter in the book of “First Ladies of Elmhurst.”

Former City Manager Tom Borchert spoke at Betsy’s DSA Banquet, presenting her with a copy of the book Elmhurst: Trails of Yesterday.

“It’s easy to say ‘no,’ it’s easy to say ‘I’m busy,’ it’s easy to say ‘I don’t have time,’ but you don’t!”

Borchert said in his remarks. “You say, ‘I will commit, I will get involved, I will make a difference for the Elmhurst community.’

“Betsy, you are an inspiration to the City of Elmhurst. Someday, they’ll do another ‘Elmhurst: Trails of Yesterday,’ and it will include a chapter on Betsy Aldred.”

Family, service, compassion, dedication, and fun are words that sum up a life well-lived. Betsy was once quoted as saying, “I have a lovely life and I am a happy woman. I guess my maiden name, Bliss, fits me!”

Visitation was held at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Road, Elmhurst on Thursday, June 24. A Memorial Service was held Friday, June 25 at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. Visitation thanks teachers, staff with ‘Clap Out’

On Friday, May 21, the parents and students at Visitation Catholic School surprised the teachers and staff with a “Clap Out” celebration to thank them for allowing our kids to attend in-person learning allday, every day during the 2020-21 school year.

“Masks were worn all year and countless sanitizing procedures and other social distancing efforts kept our kids and teachers safe,” said Marion Conners, president of the

Visitation Parent’s Association. “To show appreciation for our teachers and staff, families made signs and cheered as the teachers processed down the sidewalk, led by our mascot, the Visitation Viking, and a banner that read ‘We Did It.’” Each teacher was presented with an ornament made out of Visitation plaid fabric that read “You ARE Essential” in reference to being critical essential workers during the pandemic.

The Visitation Viking mascot led the parade at the “Clap Out” held as a thank-you to teachers and staff toward the end of the school year.

“We played at Plunkett Park, which had a lot of Timothy fans,” Trojans coach Jon Hamelinck said.

“IC was happy to play a lot of long balls and it seemed they were hoping for a close 1-0 kind of game. The entire first half it seemed like the ball was rarely on the ground and we struggled to make any sort of progress through possession.”

The game was tied 0-0 going into halftime, “but we remained confident and knew that if we possessed and had more urgency the results would come.”

Drye scored in the 58th minute on a header set up by Tornabene, and then with a few minutes remaining Martens converted a low cross from Drye (named player of the game).

Myket recorded her eighth shutout of the season with a 3-save effort.

That brought the Trojans to the Class 1A supersectional game again at Plunkett Park against Richmond-Burton. Timothy won that contest 1-0.

“Again, it felt like a home game,” said Hamelinck.

Hamelinck noted Myket came up with three key saves on breakaways, “that were a result of some defensive miscues,” the coach said.

“The Anthony Bucolo fires a game pitch was even in just about every sense; game. similar playing styles, formation, re-

cords, talent and speed. Our second half showed we were the stronger, more balanced team.”

Timothy outshot Richmond-Burton 9-5 and won the game when Drye scored with less than three minutes remaining.

That was Timothy’s first appearance in a supersectional since 2007 and the first time ever that it had won that important game that earned it a state finals berth.

That set up a Timothy vs. Quincy Notre Dame state semifinal matchup. “We came into this game as the unwritten underdogs,” Hamelinck said. “Quincy Notre Dame had won five state titles since 2010 and had a good record in these types of situations, going undefeated in its last 10 playoff games.”

Hamelinck pointed out the last time Quincy Notre Dame won the state title was three years ago when Timothy’s current seniors were freshmen. “I told our team beforehand that I am not buying into the underdog narrative and that we have played just as many meaningful games over the past three years as they have,” he said.

unable to play because of it, but we got off to a great start and had chances within the first few minutes,” the coach explained.

Hamelinck noted one major key was keeping an eye on Notre Dame’s top scorer Lia Quintero, who came into the game with 38 goals. “We knew they were fast and had a lethal scorer up top, so we had to play well as a defensive unit,” he said. “We limited her changes and ultimately secured the victory.”

Carter put Timothy up 1-0 late in the first half on a goal Hamelinck termed “beautiful.”

It was Carter’s 22nd goal of the season, which tied the school single-season record. “Our defense held tough and frustrated Quincy Notre Dame all game,” he added. “it was a slow second half for many reasons, but we did what we had to do to win.”

Timothy then dropped a 7-0 decision to Belleville Althoff Catholic in the Class 1A state title game. “The game did not start out well with Althoff scoring just a couple minutes in,” said Hamelinck. “Their team speed and through balls were too much for us to handle.”

Hamelinck noted that prior to the state final, Timothy had not given up more than two goals in a game this season, but within the first 15 minutes of the state final, Althoff had a 3-0 lead. “Naturally, this wore heavily on the girls, but they stuck together and battled all the way through to the end, not letting the lopsided scored show that mentally it was extremely tough. It was a tough way to end a tremendous season, the best in the school’s history, but I am still extremely proud of everything they have accomplished.”

Hamelinck felt Timothy’s biggest progress this season came from the players believing in

themselves. “I think the belief in themselves was most important,” he said. “We started the season with four straight shutouts and were figuring out offensively how we were going to play,” he said. “We kept games close, especially when we were up against good teams and gave ourselves a chance to win every game.

The girls realized that it doesn’t matter who we play, if we stick together and to our game plan, we’ll find success.”

Hamelinck added that it also didn’t hurt to have a talented roster. “We had depth and balance throughout our lineup,” he said. “Our backline of Sophia Biscan, Elena Munk, Chloe Leppink and Marta Veenstra were terrific the whole season, and Corinne Myket and Angel Burke combined for 13 shutouts in goal. Our offensive players had a nice mix of speed, skill and finish with two girls having more than 20 goals (Carter and Drye), and two more in double digits (Tornabene and Martens). Each game was a team effort.”As the season wore on, Hamelinck noted Myket got particularly hot in goal. “Corinne played terrific in the final few games of our season and into the playoffs,” he said. “She competed hard and single-handedly won the game for us against Richmond-Burton.”

Drye and Carter also turned things up a notch down the stretch. “Big-game players show up for the big game and Maddie was involved in all three goals we needed to secure our sectional and supersectional titles. She drew a lot of attention from opposing defenses and that opened up a lot of space for our wing players,” Hamelinck explained. “Emma has been a tremendous leader all year for us, but her work in the middle and communica-

tion with her teammates was like having another coach out there. Her goal to win the state semifinal against Quincy Notre Dame was a fitting way for that game to go. The girls look to her to lead the way and she did at the most important time.”

Looking back, Hamelinck again referenced the team-first aspect of his roster. “I will always remember how well they all got along, supported each other and played selflessly,” he said. “It was always ‘we before me.’ They believed in each other.”

After a year off, EWAN’s ‘Cue for a Cause returns This year includes bake-off competition for desserts

It’s on!

After a year hiatus due to--what else-the pandemic, the ‘Cue for a Cause, benefitting the Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network, is coming back on Sunday, Sept. 5 from 12 noon to 7 p.m. in the City parking lot at York and Vallette behind the Knights of Columbus.

Registration is now open for anyone interested in testing their skills against other barbecue enthusiasts. Entrants can choose to compete in ribs or chicken, but to be named Grand Champion, they must compete in both categories as well as in the sauce category. The deadline to register is Aug. 21.

Bill and Michelle Steber were named Grand Champions in 2019, and they have already signed up to defend their title this year. Their 2019 win was all the more remarkable for its impressive turnaround as they had landed in last place in the 2018 ‘Cue. Bill feels good about their chances in 2021, saying they practiced a lot throughout the quarantine. Not only did they practice, but their win inspired Bill to develop three sauces which he sold for charity last year.

For Bill, the best part of the day was spending time with the family and

friends who came out to support him and Michelle. His advice for first-timers: “Remember that there is a journey in every slab of ribs. Take the time to practice and research your skills. It’s worth it!”

Bill encourages everyone considering competing to give it a try.

“You will learn more just by watching the other contenders and enjoying the process,” he said. “Also, it’s for a great cause.”

A new addition to this year’s ‘Cue will be a pie and cookie bake-off. Meat has ruled the day in the past, but it’s time to give desserts some love. Registration to compete in the bake-off can also be found on-line, and the deadline to sign up is Sept. 1.

Everyone is invited to attend the day of competition and fun. Live bands will play throughout the day and, while the competitors’ fare can’t be tasted, Barbecue Jim’s food truck will be there to satisfy all barbecue cravings. Beer and wine will be available for purchase, along with the popular root beer float stand. The kids will enjoy plenty of entertainment, including a roving magician, balloon twisters and a giant slide.

Raffles also play a part in the day.

Among the most sought-after prizes will be the typical Bears, Sox, and Cubs Tickets. This year, attendees will also be able to bid on a day on Lake Michigan on a privately owned yacht.
