School Board discusses public feedback on facility master plan Referendum considered to provide funds for renovation, construction

At its meeting on Tuesday, June 19, the District 205 School Board heard a presentation from the consultants who are helping the board and district staff gain community feedback about the formation of the district’s master facility plan.

Lesley Rogers and Marcia Sutter presented the board with feedback from recent community meetings and information sessions. District employees took notes at all of the recent events to obtain community feedback.

The feedback further indicated that the attendees are interested in the timeline of any construction or renovation at their particular school.

Additionally, the attendees were concerned with safety and security at the district’s schools. Most were in favor of the district offering all-day kin-

dergarten. Concern was raised about parity among the district’s elementary and middle schools and ensuring that the district’s students had similar opportunities and experiences before they got to York High School.

The consultants noted they had heard differing opinions regarding the potential pursuit of a referendum

to fund construction and renovations at the district’s schools. While some residents urged the district not to rush the process, others said the district had worked on its master facility plan long enough, and it was time to move forward.

Board member Shannon Ebner said the district needed to have some

closure on any potential boundary adjustments before moving forward with pursuing its master facility plan.

The board will reportedly discuss any potential boundary adjustments at this week’s special meeting on June 28. That meeting will include discussion of the draft master facility plan.

Board considers referendum for funding The board is considering asking district voters to approve a referendum to borrow money to pay for renovation and construction of the district’s schools. The costliest option for renovation and construction calls for budgeting $168.5 million to pay for improvements. If the board wants to put a referendum question on the ballot in the November 2018 election, it would have to adopt a resolution no later than Aug. 20.

Overview of public meetings, residents’ concerns A total of about 390 people attended the recent meetings, with 209 of those people attending four community meetings. Rogers and Sutter said the subject of school boundaries and potential boundary adjustments sparked conversation among the attendees. The consultants said the majority of the district residents who attended the meetings preferred moving forward to maintaining the status quo at the district’s schools.

School Board approves PTA donations to Jackson, Lincoln

York football parents cover summer camp T-shirts cost

At its recent meeting on Tuesday, June 19, the District 205 School Board voted to approve acceptance of a $10,000 gift from the Jackson Elementary School PTA. The donation will be used to buy books for each classroom. The Jackson PTA also donated $3,000 to build a GaGa pit for students to play on at recess.

The School Board also approved the Lincoln Elementary School PTA’s gift of about $1,000 to purchase a subscription to Pebblego Next, a database that provides grade-level appropriate articles on a variety of topics.

In addition, a $1,500 donation from York football parents was approved to cover the cost of summer camp T-shirts for the football program.

Elmhurst Airborne Basketball hosts ALSF fundraiser On Sunday, June 24, Elmhurst Airborne basketball took part in a fundraiser to support Alex’s Lemonade Stand. It took place in the Campbell Gymnasium at York High School.

The event featured Clay Custer and some of his Loyola University Basketball teammates providing an afternoon of instructional guidance in the game of basketball. There was also a Q&A session, a chance for autographs and giveaways. All proceeds were donated to the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which supports the fight against children’s cancers.

Sixth grade girls team wins state 24-18 The 6th grade Girls Elmhurst Airborne basketball team was part of a select group of qualified teams from Illinois that recently participated in the Inaugural 2018 Illinois Middle School Basketball Championship in Rockford.

In pool play, the Airborne girls easily handled the Lincoln Way Wildcats 40-20, in their second game versus the Hampshire Jr. Whips, Airborne won 29-13.

With these two wins, the Airborne girls were seeded second going into the championship round of four teams.

In the semifinals Airborne won 33- 25 over the OYA Lightning to advance to the championship game versus the Park Ridge Sky. Even though the Park Ridge Sky was averaging 44 points a game, the Elmhurst Airborne girls shut them down with superb defense and a patient offense winning the state championship by a score of 24-18.

Obituary Harry W. Schwarz Jr., 89 Harry W. Schwarz Jr., of Elmhurst, passed away recently at the age of 89. Vets Commission to honor deceased veterans

Balgemann ceremony July 8 George H. Balgemann, deceased February 3, 1983, a World War II U. S. Navy veteran, will be honored during the 1 p.m. honor guard ceremony on Sunday, July 8, by having his name placed in the Roll of Remembrance at the Veterans Memorial in Wilder Park.

Balgemann entered the service on June 21, 1943, attaining the rank of Radioman 2nd Class and was discharged on February 10, 1946. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Area Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.

Salerno to be recognized July 15 Joseph P. Salerno, deceased November 27, 2017, a World War II U. S. Army veteran, will be honored during the 1 p.m. honor guard ceremony on Sunday, July 15, by having his name placed in the Roll of Remembrance at the Veterans Memorial.

Salerno entered the service on April 9, 1943, attaining the rank of Captain and was discharged on August 6, 1946. He received the Purple Heart, Soldiers Medal, Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater Campaign Medal, American Theater Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

History Museum welcomes new Curator of Exhibits The Elmhurst History Museum has announced the appointment of Daniel Bartlett to the position of Curator of Exhibits. Bartlett will lead the Elmhurst History Museum’s exhibits program—from concept through installation—developing a wide array of visitor experiences aligned to the museum’s mission to engage people with history. He joined the Elmhurst History Museum team in May 2018.

An experienced museum professional and educator, Bartlett comes to the Elmhurst History Museum from Beloit College’s Logan Museum of Anthropology, where he was

Curator of Exhibits and Education and an Adjunct Instructor of Museum Studies for ten years. He holds a Master’s Degree in Public History and a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Dan also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Technical Theatre from University of Wisconsin Superior.

Bartlett looks forward to working together with the Elmhurst History Museum staff and the Elmhurst community to continue to create exciting exhibits that engage audiences from throughout the Chicago area.

City introduces the WaterSmart Program Open house events planned to demonstrate use

According to a release issued by the City of Elmhurst, it is now time to introduce residents to the WaterSmart Program.

With the installation of the new, more efficient water meters that are currently being installed citywide, citizens will benefit from the ability to actively manage their water usage.

Homeowners will be able to view their hourly consumption from the convenience of their mobile device through the WaterSmart program.

The City will host open houses at City Hall to demonstrate the use of WaterSmart from 5-7 p.m. on the Mondays of July 9 and 23 and August 13 and 27.

WaterSmart provides a secure, web-based portal with your hourly and historical water usage, as well as leak notices.

District 205 names new Director of Facilities On Tuesday, June 19, at the Board of Education meeting, Todd Schmidt was named the new Director of Facilities for Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205. Schmidt has 18 years of experience in facilities in the Rockford Public School District, serving as the Chief Operations Officer/Executive Director of Operations since 2009.

Schmidt has directed a department of approximately 900 in-house and privately contracted Todd Schmidt employees in Facility Maintenance, Custodial Services, Transportation, Nutrition Services, Student Assignment, Materials Management, Construction Engineering and Life Safety. He was responsible for $68 million in annual operating expenditures and $250 million capital improvement plan. Additionally, he has supervised the implementation of a $250M capital improvement plan that was the result of a successful ballot initiative.

“Todd has a wealth of knowledge and experience in facility management,” said Chris Whelton, assistant superintendent for finance and operations. “He will be a huge addition to our facility team, and we are looking forward to working with him.”

Schmidt received the Governor’s Environment Hero Award in 2011 and is a veteran of the United States Navy.

“I was impressed with the quality of exhibits that this small suburban museum has produced over the last few years,” he said. “I like that the staff thinks big and that the creative process is collaborative.

“I’m excited to help move the museum forward. My first goals are to learn more about the museum’s collection and the community’s history.

We will also look at where we want to go as a museum, building on our top quality exhibits program and the growth that has occurred here.”

Bartlett’s design and exhibit development skills will be on display in the Elmhurst History Museum’s upcoming exhibit, “Chicago Rink Rats: The Golden Age of Roller Skating,” which opens July 13.

“I came aboard late in the process so we’re running at full pace now to pull together all the artifacts, content, and design,” he said. “It’s going to be a fascinating show, and I look forward to seeing our ideas and plans come together.”

Farmers Market up and running for season

The York & Vallette Business District has announced that the Elmhurst Farmers Market is already up and operating on Wednesday mornings from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the public parking lot at York & Vallette behind the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Now through October, residents are invited to the Farmers Market where they will find fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, cheeses, plants, flowers, honey, spices, specialty food items, soaps and skin care, gourmet foods, and more. Visitors will also find John’s Sharpening Services, for knives, blades, scissors and other household items that need sharpening.

In addition to food items, every week there will be a different group or organization at the Resource Booth providing information. In July, the booth will feature the Elmhurst Public Library (7/11), the City of Elmhurst (7/18), and Mom’s Demand Action (7/25). There is also a Flex Booth featuring other community resources such as the Democratic Party

of DuPage (7/11), Bright Horizons/DuPage County Farm (7/18) and Prairie Path Foot & Ankle Clinic (7/25).

Among this year’s merchants are The Cheese People of Quincy; Jake’s Country Meats of Cassopolis, Mich.; Froehlich’s Finest Fruits & Vegetables of Berrien Center, Mich.; Apple Holler of Sturtevant, Wis.; Elena’s Cucina of Roselle; and many others.

Now that July is on the horizon, shoppers can expect to find: asparagus, beets, blackberries, blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, cherries, collards, green peas, lettuce, mushrooms, peaches, radishes, raspberries, snap beans, spinach, strawberries, summer squash, turnips and turnip greens, and much more.

Readers of the Elmhurst Independent may be interested to know that leftover food items at the end of the day each Wednesday are typically transported to area food pantries, including the Yorkfield Food Pantry.

City seeks volunteers for new Public Arts Commission The City is seeking volunteers for the recently established Public Arts Commission. The Elmhurst Public Arts Commission is charged with implementing a citywide plan for the promotion and thoughtful placement of public art that includes, but is not limited to, sculptures, murals, and paintings. The Commission will work to utilize public art to improve the business climate and aesthetic appeal of the city. The Commission will consist of nine members including a designated chair and vice chair.

Commission tasks will include: • Create an inventory of existing public art throughout the City of Elmhurst

• Work with Explore Elmhurst and other partners to create promotional materials for existing public art • Identify high-priority locations for new, permanent installations of public art • Provide a framework to support and move forward specific projects, both permanent and temporary, such as an installation at one of the high-priority locations or in conjunction with a museum exhibit • In the case of a new, permanent exhibit, draft the request for proposals, evaluate submissions, and recommend a selection • Establish partnerships to identify resources to defray the City’s costs

Harassment, threats

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

June 13 A victim in the 300 block of W. Butterfield told police at around 2:56 p.m. of receiving alarming and disturbing emails from a suspect.

A reporting officer contacted the suspect and advised him to cease all non-business contact.

The suspect stated he would comply, and the victim declined to sign complaints.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement, criminal trespass to property, vandalism

June 20 A complainant in the 200 block of N. West told police at around 1:22 p.m. that an unknown vehicle crashed into the northeast corner of his chain link fence.

June 19-June 20 A victim in the 200 block of E. Butterfield told police that he noticed the passenger side front and rear tires on his vehicle had been slashed. An investigation is pending.

June 12-June 13 A victim at an extended stay facility in the 500 block of W. Grand told police that while her car was parked on the south side of the parking lot, an unknown suspect(s) made deep scratches on her trunk removing the model logo sign “3.0TL.”

Disorderly conduct

June 17 Christopher Dwyer, 31, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct and possession of open alcohol in public in the 400 block of N. Shady Lane at around 12:17 a.m. Police said officers responded to the report of a suspicious subject at the above location. A victim told police that Dwyer allegedly rang her doorbell, walked through her yard, and began moving a table in the yard. Dwyer was located with open alcohol, according to police.

June 14 Cynthia Palmer, 47, of Brookfield, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct at a restaurant in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 2:43 p.m. Police said Palmer had been drinking in the restaurant and was falling asleep.

A victim told police while walking at around 9:20 p.m., a watermelon fell from the top of the Addison Parking Deck, almost hitting him. The victim observed two Hispanic males leave the deck shortly after it fell. The area was checked with no results.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor

June 19 Noah Ross, 39, of Davidson, Mich., was charged with DUI subsequent to a call for a reported driver sleeping behind the wheel of his pickup truck at a hotel parking lot in the 900 block of S. Riverside at around 5:17 a.m.

Police said that subsequent to a call for an intoxicated subject at a gas station in the 400 block of N. York at around 3:08 a.m., a suspect was found to be driving while license suspended and admitted to driving to the gas station. The suspect was found to be in possession of cannabis and Xanax® bars, was placed under arrest for DUI-drugs and transported to the station. The suspect was released without charges pending lab results.

CALL 800-222-TIPS June 17 Police said that subsequent to a roadside safety check near York and Industrial at around 12:12 a.m., Daniel Romero-Andrade, 47, of Glendale Heights, was found to be DUI. The passenger, Natasha D. Gabor, 33, of Franklin Park, was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia, according to police. Police said it was learned that Romero-Andrade solicited a sex act from Gabor. Both were transported to the police station where Romero-Andrade was charged with DUI and solicitation of a sex act. Gabor was charged with prostitution and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Victor Tapia, 29, of Plano, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and no insurance near Route 83 and North at around 1:16 a.m. Police said that subsequent to report of a driver slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle, Tapia was located, was found to be DUI and was in possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

A 36-year-old Maywood man was charged with aggravated DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage and no insurance near Roosevelt and York at around 2:51 a.m.

Police said that subsequent to a report of a possible physical domestic at the above location, officers located the suspect, who was found to have driven his vehicle in a ditch in the area of Roosevelt and York roads. The suspect was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police.

June 16 Yessica Aguilera-Lemon, 27, of West Chicago, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, no valid driver’s license and an improper turn subsequent to a crash investigation near Elmhurst and York at around 6:18 p.m.

Freddy Velazquez, 22, of Cicero, was charged with DUI and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Hagans at around 2:54 a.m.

Fleeing and eluding

June 15 Police said that while investigating possible burglary to vehicles in the area of Van Auken and Crestview at around 1:45 a.m., a reporting officer observed a white newer-model 4-door vehicle with tinted windows disobey a stop sign northbound on Van Auken at Crestview.

The reporting officer activated his patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and siren in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed westbound on Belden Avenue from Emroy Avenue, disobeying a stop sign at Van Auken Street. The vehicle was last seen southbound on Kenilworth Avenue from Belden Avenue.

June 21 Carrie L. Myles, 32, of Aurora, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis, and also was charged with aggravated driving while license revoked, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Fay at around 12:05 a.m.

June 20 Jonathan Carillo, 20, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, tinted windows and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and West at around 7:52 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances

June 16 Police said that while a reporting officer was on patrol in the 200 block of Oak at around 2:57 a.m., the officer observed a listed vehicle disobey the red traffic signal westbound on North Avenue at York Road. As the officer attempted to catch up to the vehicle, it turned southbound on Oak Street and immediately into a driveway. The officer located the vehicle unoccupied. The rear license plate on the vehicle registered to a GMC. The vehicle had a different front license plate which was registered to a Mercury. Subsequent to further investigation, police said the officer made contact with Todd Casey, 32, of Carol Stream, who admitted to driving the vehicle and fleeing on foot due to having a suspended license.

Casey was charged with driving while license suspended, no valid registration, improper use of registration, disobeying a traffic control device, no insurance and tinted windows.

June 15 Police said that subsequent to a report of a possible burglary to vehicle in the 600 block of N. Van Auken at around 1:21 a.m., three male juveniles were taken into custody. The juveniles were cited for possession of alcohol, curfew, prowling and were released to parents.

A victim in the 800 block of S. Mitchell told police at around 12:47 p.m. that an unknown suspect activated his “Ring” doorbell at around 2 a.m. The activation was caused by motion. The suspect, described as a white male between 18 and 25 years old, wearing sunglasses, a hooded sweatshirt and shorts, made an obscene hand gesture at the camera and muttered some profanities. The suspect appeared to be intoxicated and then left the property.

June 10 Police said the Elmhurst Department received a suspicious phone call at around 10:26 a.m. regarding a police officer stating he would not be coming into work the next day and hung up. Upon further investigation, the subject was later located and the phone call was found to be a prank.

April 1-April 19 A complainant in the 100 block of E. Schil-

June 20 Forgery was reported in the 500 block of W. North at around 9:45 p.m. A complainant told police that the suspect asked her to give him change for two $100 bills. She gave the suspect $200 in various denominations, later to find the bills he had given her were counterfeit. The suspect was described as a black male, around 20 years old, approximately 6’, 170 pounds, and was last seen wearing a pink hooded sweater, a jacket and stone-washed skinny jeans.

June 19 Santos Alonso, 20, of Stone Park, was charged with obstructing identification, aggravated driving while license suspended, no insurance and no seat belt near North and Melrose at around 7:23 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, it was later determined that Alonso provided the officer with a fictitious name.

June 16-June 19 A victim in the 400 block of N. Berteau told police that he lost his credit card earlier in the day. Upon checking his online statement, he discovered that an unknown suspect(s) made several fraudulent transactions. The credit card company reimbursed the victim and issued a new account number.

June 18 Theft was reported in the 600 block of Fairview at around 6:36 p.m. A victim told police that she and her son engaged in an Internet sales transaction where they sent merchandise to an address in Crete, Ill. The suspect sent the victim a fake PayPal e-mail to pay for the merchandise. The suspect then ceased all contact with the victim.

June 14-June 18 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of E. Fremont between the above dates.

A victim told police that an unknown suspect entered her Honda CRV while it was parked in her driveway and removed her property.

June 16 Retail theft was reported at a pharmacy in the 200 block of W. North at around 2:13 a.m.

A victim told police that an unknown suspect described as a black male took numerous bottles of alcohol, placed them in his backpack, and fled the scene. An unknown witness chased down the suspect, took his backpack, and returned it to the pharmacy. The unknown suspect then fled on his bicycle. The backpack contained miscellaneous toiletries, alcohol, and a black Digix tablet. All the items were placed into evidence.

The DuPage County Prevention Leadership Team (PLT) recently praised the local efforts to raise the age to purchase tobacco products to 21. Several communities have recently passed a “Tobacco 21” ordinance, joining more than 300 localities nationwide.

“We congratulate these cities for leading DuPage County in Tobacco 21 ordinances,” said Doug Petit, PLT Co-Chair. “Increasing the legal age to purchase tobacco products to 21 will significantly reduce youth tobacco-use, and ultimately save lives.”

School Board approves proposal for admin reorganization Board members voted 5-2 to approve an administrative reorganization proposal that includes the addition of a director of human resources position and the reorganization of six existing positions. The changes will take effect in the upcoming 2018-19 school year.

According to the proposal, one of the reorganizations to an existing position calls for changing Mary Henderson-Baum’s title from assistant superintendent for learning and leadership to associate superintendent for learning and leadership development.

The position of director and human resources will reportedly include an annual salary of about $85,000.

Board member Karen Stuefen joined Ebner in voting against the proposal. Stuefen said she had not received financial data about the proposal. Ebner noted that she voted against the proposal because she did not have enough related information.

The board will hold its next regular meeting on July 17.

On Sunday, June 24, Vintage Civil War-era Base Ball took place on the Elmhurst College Mall, where the Elmhurst North players took on the Elmhurst South, overseen by the Barrister, or Umpire, The Honorable “Dandy” Dave Oberg, who is executive director of the Elmhurst History Museum when he returns to present-day life.

Following strict 1860s rules, the teams played one another while the crowd embraced the rules and protocol, including the specific cheers and chants that ruled the day.

Besides “Dandy” Oberg, most other players had nicknames as well. men were wearing shorts, which was believed to be indecent in that such attire was “agitating to the women.”)

When all was said and done, it was the South Elmhurst team who beat the North team 14-10.

I am writing this on behalf of my family for the gratefulness we feel for the support and atmosphere we have to thrive as a second generation business.

I grew up in India and came here as an automobile engineer at the age of 21 with my mother to join my brother and his family who were settled here.

I went to school in Norridge, Illinois to study auto mechanics and body and fender repair, and painting. While studying I was working in Elk Grove as an electronic technician where I met, Kim, my wife.

My dream was to go back to India. When we are young and idealistic, we want to change the world, I am not that young anymore, but the rest remains the same. I convinced Kim to move to India after living here for 5 years with Shawn our first born son.We moved back to Ahmedabad, India where I grew up. Kim was born and raised in Minnesota and took time adjusting to the life there, but adapted to the lifestyle. Family life, circle of friends and even business life was good, but I had left as a student and returned as a business person and could not adjust to the corruption in routine life and later on the attitude of co-workers who take your goodness as weakness and that started affecting my health. Our sons Sheroy and Shazad were born in India. Having three little kids and not even thirty years old, I had to make the hard choice, do I give up my dreams or do I give up my principles. Seemed like a lose-lose situation, but I decided to put the dreams on hold and came back to the Chicago area where I stayed with my brother Kayo and his family.

In 1983 we found a gas station and repair shop in Oak Brook and signed a five year lease and started Mehta Motors.

Kim was the cashier and pumped gas and I worked on cars. Our upbringing of honesty and hard work paid off and business grew and when our lease was to expire our landlord doubled the rent thinking they had a captive tenant who had built a good business at the location. We did not want to go through the same situation again so we started looking for a place of our own and happened to find our current location in Elmhurst.

We mortgaged everything we had and more as we had to get personal loans from family and friends to come up with the down payment for this property in June of 1988. We have gone through highs and lows in the years we have been here.

We have three sons who we are very proud of, Shawn, Sheroy and Shazad. After finishing their studies they worked other places for experience before joining our business. We feel blessed in feeling that they have retained our habit of honesty and hard work and have grown our business.

I am happy to say that I kept my principles and did not give into the corruption and assimilate in that environment. I am mature enough to know that there is corruption everywhere, but at my level in my daily life I have not experienced it here.

We have gone through different phases in Elmhurst from hiring, to purchasing, to dealing with EPA when we had to get rid of our gas station, to construction and building. We have never been approached for any kind of favors from anyone.

We believe in giving more than we promise and somehow in my life experience we have gotten more than we can give.

Once again, our gratitude to all who have provided us with the resources and opportunity to become who we are today.

I will end with my favorite line, I am grateful to my family and upbringing and to the city where I grew up Ahmedabad, India for giving me my roots. And to my family, all loved ones and all in Elmhurst, USA for giving us the fruits of a contented and happy life for the past thirty years.

Red Cross calls for new blood donors to fill missing blood types

As part of an international movement, the American Red Cross is launching the Missing Types campaign today to recruit new blood donors – and those who have not given recently – to ensure lifesaving blood is available for patients.

During the Missing Types campaign, the letters A, B and O – the main blood groups – will disappear from brands, social media pages, signs and websites to illustrate the critical role every blood donor plays. When the letters A, B and O vanish from everyday life, the gaps are striking.

And when A, B and O blood types are missing from hospital shelves, patient care could be impacted.

“Unfortunately, blood shortages still happen and the number of new Red Cross blood donors is shrinking each year,” said Cliff Numark, senior vice president, Red Cross Blood Services. “That’s why the Red Cross is asking those who have never donated blood and those who haven’t given in a while to make a lifesaving donation. You are the missing type patients need.”

Survey reveals public misconceptions about needs, donations A recent survey, conducted on behalf of the Red Cross, revealed a troubling disconnect between the public’s perception of blood donations and the realities of patient transfusion needs.

• Three-quarters (74 percent) of the public underestimate how frequently blood transfusions occur. Most people perceive blood is needed in the U.S. every 15 minutes or even every hour or two hours when in fact, every two seconds, someone in this country needs blood.

• Nearly half of the public (45 percent) know someone who has been helped by a blood transfusion. Yet only three percent of the U.S. population donates each year.

• More than one-third (35 percent) of the public has never considered that blood may not be available when they or a loved one need it. Blood shortages are not uncommon in the United States and can only be prevented when more people roll up a sleeve to give.

• More than half (53 percent) of the public believe they need to know their blood type to donate. Good news – Potential blood donors do not

need to know their blood type before giving blood. After individuals give blood, the Red Cross provides each donor their blood type. By joining the #MissingType movement, donors can find out their blood type this summer.

Missing letters can lead to delays in treatment Lily Dotson and her family know how serious blood shortages can be for patients. During Lily’s 2 ½ years of treatment for high-risk leukemia, her family was told twice that the hospital didn’t have the blood or platelets she needed and that she would have to wait for transfusions. It was incredibly frustrating and eye-opening for Lily’s mom Susie Dotson.

“People automatically think blood is there. They don’t realize we’re relying on their blood donation,” said Dotson. “Lily needed blood products just as much as the chemo or the treatment.”

Lily, now 11, has been cancer-free for four years and is preparing to enter middle school this year.

Each day, blood and platelets are needed for accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those like Lily who are receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood donations every day for patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals across the country.

New donors needed Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. But for the past four years, new Red Cross donors have declined by about 80,000 each year.

This is not just a Red Cross trend, but a challenge blood collection organizations face across the country and around the world.

Donating blood is a simple process and only takes about an hour from start to finish.

• Registration: Sign in, show ID and read required information.

• Health check: Answer questions and receive a mini-physical.

• Donation: Giving a pint of blood only takes about eight to 10 minutes.

• Refreshments: Donors enjoy snacks and relax before resuming their day.

Chicago Rink Rats: The Golden Age of Roller Skating coming soon New exhibit opens July 13 at History Museum The Elmhurst History Museum is gearing up for another locally-curated exhibition, Chicago Rink Rats: The Golden Age of Roller Skating, which will be on display July 13 to Nov. 4.

In the wake of the Great Depression and into the 1970s, America found itself with a new pastime: rollerskating. At the height of The Golden Age in 1950, rollerskating became the number one participatory sport in America with nearly 5,000 roller rinks and 18 million skaters—and Chicago was the epicenter of it all.

Take a nostalgic trip to the glory days of rollerskating to learn about the “rink rats”—the regulars at the legendary skating venues with names like The Elm, Arcadia, Riverview, Lombard, The Savoy, and others. Hear first-person accounts from skaters and view images and eclectic artifacts, from skating jackets and gear to competition medals, posters, and memorabilia. Inspired by the book by author and skater Tom Russo.

At the time, Michaels, 31, was 5’9” tall and weighed 337 lbs.

“I was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital,” said Michaels. “From that moment on, my life has never been the same. After a night full of X-rays, cat scans and MRIs, I was sent home with pain medication and the thought of back surgery in my near future.”

Instead of going the surgery route, Michaels wanted to try physical therapy. During the second session, he

asked what he could do to improve his chances of a full recovery. The physical therapist told him to follow his exercises and think about losing some weight.

Starting a new lease on life Michaels was given the contact information for Heather Bautista, ND, CNS, LDN, a naturopathic nutritionist at Elmhurst Hospital’s Integrative Medicine Clinic. The two met for the first time in early December 2017.

“She really opened my eyes,” said Michaels. “That night I went home and had a monster plate of spaghetti and meatballs. Why? I don’t know.

My wife made it and I really don’t have an answer. I guess I was scared that this would be the last time I’d ever be full again.”

The next day Michaels eliminated all drinks except water, about 140180 ounces a day, and he and his wife, Mary, started making everything they eat at home – with no gluten, no dairy, no sugar and low carb.

“We started a Pinterest board with all types of recipes, apps, sauces, desserts and smoothies,” he said. “All the recipes were either Whole 30, Whole Foods, Paleo or Keto. I post a lot of the recipes on Instagram.”

“These ‘diets’ should not be viewed as diets, but more of a lifestyle change,” said Bautista. “All of these ‘lifestyles’ promote clean eating – cutting out processed foods and sugar, while preparing our own foods with real ingredients.”

As part of the lifestyle change, Michaels works out Monday through Friday for 30-45 minutes during his lunch hour, in which he also takes 15 minutes to eat.

“Doug’s progress is a product of all the hard work he is putting in at home,” said Bautista. “Weight loss is a tricky thing for some patients, but he had the right mindset when he started his journey – that he needed a lifestyle change. This approach works for him because he is essentially designing his own meal plan every week that aligns with his palate and his food cravings.”

Among the food Michaels eats: chicken wings, low-carb tortilla pizzas, bacon, shrimp, breaded chicken, chocolate chip cookies, steak (every Friday), burgers and ribs.

“Seriously,” he said. “It’s all in how you prepare it and quality of the meat. Since Dec. 7, I’ve had six to eight meals out, tops. Sure, that seems like a lot of cooking, but it’s easy, once you get the hang of it.”

How it all works This is a typical day for Michaels: • Every day except Sunday, he wakes at 5:30 a.m. and drinks 8-16 ounces of water.

• 7 a.m.: A “Heather-approved” protein shake. “As long as the ingredients are ‘clean’ and the shake doesn’t have a lot of sugar or chemicals to preserve it, it is ‘Heather-approved,’” said Bautista.

• 9 a.m.: Two hard-boiled eggs.

• Noon: Last night’s leftovers or a salad with a paleo dressing and an avocado.

• 2 p.m.: Snack – raw baby carrots, an RX bar, a Lara bar or some fruit (mainly berries).

• Between 5 and 6:30 p.m.: Dinner.

• 8 p.m. (no later than 8:45 p.m.): Dessert. Note: He doesn’t eat dessert two days before a weigh-in, but every other day).

“Doug can still enjoy the foods that he loves because he has learned how to create them with quality ingredients,” Bautista said. “Of course, you have to limit your consumption. But Doug has mastered the art of limiting himself. He has gained control of his food versus the food having control over him.”

In late January 2017, Michaels was cleared for full duty at work again. In mid-May, he weighed 253 pounds, a loss of 84 pounds.

“I’m still heavy, but I’m trying.

If I can do it, anyone can,” he said.

“Just follow your nutritional guidelines, read food packaging labels, know what you’re putting in your body, drink more water and move your body a bit. My wife has also lost about 41 pounds (after one month).

It’s totally doable.”

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County was recognized for the seventh year in a row as one of the “100 Best Fleets in the Americas” and for the fifth year in a row as one of Government Fleet magazine’s top 50 fleets in the nation.

The District remained the only conservation agency to make Government Fleet’s top 50 list, which recognizes operations that perform at high levels, particularly in fleet leadership, competitiveness and efficiency, planning, and problem solving.

The program recognizes “peak performing fleet operations in North America,” according to 100bestfleets.com. Technology, performance, collaboration, service turnaround time and accountability are all criteria for the award.

Both programs honors top public-sector fleets among more than 30,000 at the municipal, county, state and federal levels. A detailed ranking of the winners was revealed at the Government Fleet Expo and Conference June 4 – 7 in San Diego.

“This award really highlights our District Fleet staff. We are so proud to be consistently ranked among the best in the nation,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore. “It is a great honor and a testament to their hard work and progressive thinking.”

District Fleet manager Michael Webster said the fleet is distinct in its variety of vehicles and focus on alternative fuels. York summer baseball team turning the corner

Coach Kalal praises team’s efforts in recent games

Something clicked recently with the York summer baseball team.

That’s what veteran coach Dave Kalal noticed in recent times with his Dukes’ squad, which was 7-9 overall in summer action through late last week—a win-loss total that doesn’t tell the true story of the team’s progress.

“We started out slow,” he said.

“This last week and each of the first three weeks we got better. We’re seeing where kids can play and see-

ing what they can do. Hopefully we’ll have another strong week (this week). The summer has been good.

We’ve had 35-36 kids and we’ve seen them all do something in some way, shape or form. The level of play and execution this last week has been much better than the previous two weeks. We’ve gotten better.”

One particular bright spot for the Dukes has been on the mound.

“I was kind of worried about our arms,” he said. “We lost a bunch of arms to graduation and after Kellen Gilmartin and John Milling, we

didn’t know what we had. Now, we’ve been able to look at the incoming juniors the last three weeks and we feel pretty comfortable as the summer season winds down and we head into next season.”

Despite the pitching losses via graduation, Kalal noted the team returns a large number of players from this past spring’s squad. “We have a lot of positions filled,” he said.

“We’ll plug in guys here and there the last three weeks. We’re getting excited about what the future holds.”

Another positive has been the var-

ied contributions the team has been receiving from the likes of Clayton Letourneau, Dan Brown, Tyler Cwik, Zach Wiygul Tim Bowbin, Joe Orrico and Bo Thomas to name a few.

“It’s been a few different guys ever day this past week,” said Kalal.

“The potential is exciting. We saw good things on the mound and we saw a good competitiveness. Guys were out there with the desire to compete. We’re asking guys to play different positions in the summer, which will be better for the team in

the future. We want to see if they can handle it and see if they are comfortable playing another position.”

York wraps up regular-season summer play this week with games against Maine South, Hinsdale South and Downers Grove North.

York will take the Fourth of July week off before opening the summer playoffs the following week.

“Going into every summer we hope to finish .500,” said Kalal.

“Going into the playoffs we are in a position to accomplish that goal if we can take care of business.”

Elmhurst American Legion baseball teams draw high mid-season marks Senior team powered by hitting and pitching; Junior team clicking in various categories

At the halfway point of the American Legion baseball season, Elmhurst Post 187 manager Mike Biondo can’t complain.

Both the Elmhurst Muddogs senior (U19) and junior (U17) Legion teams have made progress as the playoffs inch closer.

On the senior front, Elmhurst lost a tough 8-7 game to DuPage County rival Wheaton recently.

“We dropped the ball a few times against them,” he said. “We had a lot of errors in that game.”

On the positive side, Biondo said the Muddogs have been strong with the sticks and on the mound. “The bats are there, but we are struggling defensively,” he said. “We are averaging three or four errors a game.

It’s something we need to work on.

As far as the pitching and hitting,

we’re on target and where we need to be. We just need to take care of the baseball and then we will be fine.”

Offensively through late last week, Brendan Russ was leading the senior team in hitting with a robust .600 average. Nick Lee was at .571, while Joe Orrico was hitting .400 and Jack Enright was at .353, while Mason Kamp checked in at .333.

Orrico and Kamp were tied for the team lead in stolen bases with three each. Elmhurst had a .302 team batting average through late last week and had 18 stolen bases as a team.

On the mound, Russ was 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA and had 24 strikeouts against only six walks.

“We’ve had some very solid pitching outings,’ said Biondo. “Brendan Russ has been outstanding.”

Jordan Vogel was 1-0 with a 1.58 ERA and had 12 strikeouts against

four walks. “Jordan has stepped it up,” said Biondo. “His control is a lot better.”

Elmhurst had a team ERA of 3.77 with 46 strikeouts against 16 walks.

“As long as we take care of the ball we should beat teams 6-2, 6-1, 6-0.

I like the way we are hitting and pitching. The biggest thing is taking care of the baseball.”

The Muddogs were 3-4 through their first seven games. Post 187 had eight games remaining prior to the American Legion postseason starting.

Junior Legion shining On the junior Legion front, Elmhurst sported a 7-4 overall mark through late last week.

“The junior team is doing quite well,” said Biondo. “They are putting it all together.”

The junior Muddogs were hit-

ting .330 as a team through late last week and had 35 stolen bases as a team. “They are very aggressive on the bases,” said Biondo, who added the team was averaging seven runs scored a game.

Alexis Cotto was leading the team with a .531 batting average, while Nathan Kriz was at .500 and Tommy Ryan was hitting .429 and Jose Alvarez was at .355.

“Offensively the team is doing a great job,” said Biondo.

On the mound, Dave Sykora was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA to go with eight strikeouts and only two walks.

“Dave has been pretty much untouchable,” said Biondo.

Massimo Cortez was 1-1 with a 2.27 ERA and had eight strikeouts against three walks. “He’s been a blessing in disguise with his work on the mound,” said Biondo.

Tyler Gelsomino was 1-0 with a

3.18 ERA and had nine strikeouts against five walks.

Elmhurst had a 5.50 team ERA through late last week. “The top three guys on the staff in particular have done a good job,” said Biondo.

The junior Legion team won the Danville tournament, capping things off with a win over Charleston American Legion. Elmhurst finished the Danville tournament with a 5-0 record.

“The momentum is good,” said Biondo. “The senior team needs to find itself on defense and the junior team is clicking. They have been clicking from the start. I think that will continue right into the playoffs.

As long as the senior team takes care of the baseball and where its pitching and hitting are at, I can see them doing some damage, but the key thing is to take care of the baseball.”

IC Catholic Prep baseball team working through summer Eichhorn, West earn spring all-conference honors

IC Catholic Prep baseball coach Frank DeAngelis knows the summer is a busy time for his players.

“We know we will have to share athletes with everyone,” he said.

“Sometimes it’s hard to get your hands on kids, but I’m sure that’s the same for a lot of schools around the area.”

DeAngelis has structured a summer program where the Knights play every Wednesday. “We get 15 guys to come out,” he said. “It’s a mix of freshmen through seniors.”

DeAngelis said the team uses its regular contact days on Tuesday and Wednesday. “We’ll have games on Wednesday, but the guys will come earlier and put in the work and leave and then come back for the game,” he said. “We use Thursdays as open workouts where anybody can come.”

DeAngelis said he’s seen a shift of sorts in the high-school summer baseball season. “High-school summer baseball is kind of disappearing a little,” he said. “We had a couple teams this summer cancel on us. It seems like we’re playing the same teams this summer with Fenwick, ACC, Ridgewood and Westmont.

Kids are involved in basketball and golf and then football runs in the evening. Kids work jobs and they play on travel baseball teams. Kids are busy in the summer. We will think about not doing games next year and just have our contact days and hold actual team camps. In the spring you have 11 or 12 days of actual practice and then you start playing games. It’s hard to develop guys that way.”

On the field this summer, DeAngelis has been impressed. “I’m happy with what I am seeing from the kids,” he said. “But we don’t have our full team here. I’m happy with the numbers and we’ve been able to see a lot of guys, including incoming

freshmen, but we need complete 100 percent buy-in to get over the hump in the spring. In the fall and winter, guys are playing different sports, we get that. We have to take advantage of these types of opportunities.”

In the spring, Griffen Eichhorn and CJ West were named to the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division team. This was West’s second all-conference nod in a row.

“Those were two guys who stuck out to everybody,” said DeAngelis.

“They did a lot of different things for us. Those are two big losses for us next year.”

Eichhorn hit .347 with 26 hits in 75 at-bats. He scored 22 runs, had 10 RBI and stole 26 bases. Included in his 26 hits were five doubles, two triples and one home run.

West hit .317 with 26 hits in 82 atbats. He scored 20 runs and had 16 RBI, while stealing 17 bases. West was a workhorse on the mound, logging 57 2/3 innings where he went

5-4 with a 1.94 ERA to go with 43 strikeouts.

Since taking over, DeAngelis has seen the program head in the right direction. “Overall, we’re still doing things to build the program,” he said. “We’re still playing a very competitive schedule. The conference has added some tough teams in Aurora Christian, which won the state title this year, Bishop McNamara and St. Francis, which will be a tough matchup. We like where

the conference schedule is and we like our non-conference schedule.

We’re going to do our spring-break trip again and we’re looking into Florida this time. I like where we are going. We keep working on the culture and we’re doing a lot of community service projects. I like where the baseball program is headed. All the people are pulling in the same direction and that helps. We also have great support from the school and that helps as well.”
