Police announce felony retail theft, felony escape

Man who dodged officials located, arrested without incident

On Wednesday, June 13, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Elmhurst Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle believed to be involved in a theft that had just occurred in the area of North Avenue and Larch. The car contained three people inFernando side. One of the individuals, Perez Jr. identified as Fernando Perez Jr., age 37, of 3900 W. North Ave., Chicago, is believed to have committed a retail theft at the CVS Pharmacy located at 110 W. North Ave. Perez was taken into custody and placed in an Elmhurst Police patrol vehicle. While officers were conducting a search of the suspect’s vehicle, Perez was able to escape from the vehicle. An area search for Perez was conducted using K-9 police dogs and officers on foot.

Perez was later apprehended without incident around 10:15 p.m. in the area of North Ave. and York Rd. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Rufino V. Hernandez, age 54, of 2425 N. McVicker Ave., Chicago, was also taken into custody for driving with a suspended driver’s license and disobeying a traffic control device. The other passenger of the vehicle was released without charges.

Fernando Perez Jr. was charged with Felony Retail Theft, Felony Escape, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was transported to the DuPage County Jail.

Public input on watershed plan online or at open meeting

The DuPage County Stormwater Management Planning Committee voted to open the public comment period for the draft Sugar Creek Watershed Plan. The 30-day public comment period is open now through July 12.

The plan outlines projects that may improve flood control throughout the Sugar Creek Watershed, which includes portions of Lombard, Villa Park and Elmhurst, as well as unincorporated DuPage County.

DuPage County Stormwater Management will also hold a public meeting to discuss the draft watershed plan on Wednesday, June 27 from 5 - 6:30 p.m. at Villa Park’s

Village Hall, 20 S. Ardmore Ave. The draft watershed plan is available online at dupageco.org/EDP/ Stormwater_Management/57608.

In addition, hard copies are available for review at DuPage County’s Administration Building, 421 N. County Farm Rd., Wheaton, during normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Comments on the draft watershed plan must be submitted in writing by end of day on July 12. Comments may be submitted via email to vonnahme@dupageco.org or by U. S. mail to Chris Vonnahme, c/o Department of Stormwater Management, 421 North County Farm Rd., Wheaton, IL 60187.

Nybo ethics investigations bill becomes law As more sexual harassment allegations surface in the Statehouse, State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) cosponsored an initiative to help eliminate bias in the handling of legislative ethics complaints and give victims the confidence to step forward. With overwhelming bipartisan support, the Governor signed it into law last week.

“Individuals who come forward to report sexual harassment and other ethics complaints should be able to trust that their complaints will be investigated fairly,” said Nybo. “House Bill 138 is a significant step the State is taking to ensure that we have an independent Inspector General ready to handle any complaints as they arise.”

Most notably, House Bill 138 calls for an independent search committee to recommend candidates for the position of Legislative Inspector General (LIG)—the office that handles ethics complaints reported by state

employees or individuals affiliated with state government. The independent search committee would be composed of retired judges or former prosecutors.

Additionally, in light of the recent and unjustifiable two-year vacancy of the LIG role, the measure provides the option of hiring a full-time LIG, which until now has been a part-time position. Nybo believes a full-time LIG would offer greater accessibility and availability to quickly vet and act on all complaints filed within the office.

“Harassment in the workplace is a growing concern in Illinois, and in passing this ethics reform, we hope to make the complaint-filing process safer, transparent and more accessible—so victims of harassment feel more comfortable reporting it,” said Nybo.

The Governor signed House Bill 138 into law in Chicago on June 8 and takes effect immediately.

It’s a long way from Elmhurst to Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia in south-central Africa. But last year, the love of soccer and connections through Facebook made the distance a lot shorter.

Last spring, the Stukel family of Elmhurst was hosting a visiting coach for their son’s soccer team, Elmhurst Football Club (EFC). Coach Erik Lek of Sweden had been in Elmhurst about four weeks when a co-coach at his former team tagged him in a Facebook post seeking used soccer gear. ‘Host Mom’ Laura Stukel saw the exchange between Lek and Coach Patrick Luwephiri and within days the Soccer Gear for Zambia project was off and running.

“When Erik got home from coaching, I asked him how much gear Coach Patrick might need,” said Stukel.

Lek had explained that athletes compete on dirt fields, often without shoes. The pitch gets knotted with roots in the dry season making it even harder to play. He added that players often craft their own balls out of spare bags and plastic.

Zambia coach’s story strikes a chord with Stukel As a six-year soccer mom, Stukel knew how fast unneeded soccer gear can accumulate and, as a lifelong resident of Elmhurst, she knew the generosity of her community. She quickly envisioned a garage full of gear for Coach Patrick’s team. Later, Lek admitted he expected one box. Turns out Stukel exactly predicted the generosity of Elmhurst’s soccer community.

Fueled by a gear drop hosted by the local American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO Region 399) which turns over gear every year, a bi-annual uniform swap was coordinated

by EFC and the 2017 collection drive for Soccer Gear for Zambia resulted in more than 1000 items in 13 boxes.

The gear included badly-needed soccer cleats, balls and uniforms.

There was so much gear in fact that Coach Luwephiri shared some of it with another one of Lek’s former co-coaches, Coach Job Mwanza in a rural area of Zambia called Petauke.

Luwephiri and Mwanza are both lifelong soccer players as well as community activists and philanthropists.

Since Lek left Lusaka, both coaches have gone on to found their own soccer programs. Luwephiri now runs CHILD LIFE Soccer Academy and Mwanza runs Rural Sports Foundation Zambia.

Soccer life in Zambia Both programs use soccer training or tournaments as incentives to keep athletes in school, to partake in community clean up days and to attend education on topics that promote clean water, HIV prevention and mitigation of child marriages.

Effort marches forward into 2018 Stukel is now working on a 2018 collection drive. The gear will be sent primarily to Rural Sports Foundation Zambia. Soccer season has just ended in Elmhurst, so she is collecting any balls, uniforms and cleats that are not needed here for next season in a brown collection bin outside her home at 417 S. Washington. Team Elmhurst Soccer Club (TESC) is doing its bi-annual uniform swap this year. The collection closes July 10 so items can be packed as ocean freight for the July cargo shipment by AmeZam shipping. AmeZam specializes in shipments between the U.S. and Zambia and minimizes costs and tax implications for donations and humanitarian shipments such as the Soccer Gear for Zambia items.

In addition to balls, cleats and uniforms, Stukel is recruiting “Box Angels” for $100 to cover shipping for one container or $50 to share a box with another “Angel.” She has received inquiries from two similar soccer programs in Zambia. She’s also seeking “Club Angels” who would be willing to adopt one of these clubs, organize their own collection drive and ship to the lead coaches, using Stukel’s experience to make the process as easy as possible.

Every picture tells a story “The best part came in November when we started receiving photos of our gear in action. My favorite is a video which shows a team doing their traditional pre-game chants, with a special thank you to Elmhurst,” said Stukel. “If you look on a map, Elmhurst and Lusaka seem very far away.

But kids are kids wherever you go and the amazing game of soccer connects us in a beautiful way.”

Elmhurst resident takes first among women at Lauren Kiefer 5K

The 12th annual Lauren M. Kiefer 5K Family Run/Walk took place on Saturday morning, June 16, beginning and ending outside of Willowbrook High School in Villa Park. The event honors the memory of Lauren Kiefer, a 2000 graduate of Willowbrook, who was murdered on Christmas Day 12+ years ago. All proceeds from the run/ walk benefit the Lauren M. Kiefer Memorial Foundation, which supports several charitable causes, including annual scholarships to Willowbrook seniors.

While Villa Park resident Sean Choate won first-place honors for men, Elmhurst resident Maria (Cicero) Lindberg was the event’s female champion. Lindberg finished the race, which took place in hot and humid conditions, in 22 minutes, 5.8 seconds. She also won the event’s female title last year. Lindberg graduated from York High School in 2001. She won individual IHSA state championships in cross country and track during her senior year at York.

Her individual title in cross country helped York’s girls team win the IHSA Class AA state championship.

She then ran for the cross country and track teams at Boston College, earning All-American honors in both sports.

ICCP grad drafted by Detroit Tigers Brinkman joins rookie league team in Florida

As the 40 rounds of Major League Baseball’s recent draft wound down, 22-year-old Clark Brinkman’s heartbeat sped up. The Creighton University redshirt junior and 2014 ICCP graduate had good reason to believe he was going to be drafted, but as the three-day draft played out, the drama built like an extra-inning ballgame.

Four pro teams expressed interest in the centerfielder, but Brinkman couldn’t be sure until he heard a team call his name. And then the phone rang.

“On day three, the [Detroit] Tigers’ local scout called me between the 29th and the 30th round and said, ‘Listen up…we’re gonna be calling your name pretty soon,’” he said. “I was watching the MLB draft tracker online with my brother, and my mom was listening to the audio; they called my name during the 32nd round.

“My mom heard my name and kind of cried and lost her breath a little. It was very emotional…and a pretty surreal moment.”

A different life begins Brinkman has already joined the rookie-league team in Lakeland, Fla., and will participate in the Gulf Coast League season, which runs through the end of August.

“I was told to bring my glove and some cleats, and I knew I was getting picked up by an intern at the airport,” he said. “I don’t know much more other than I was told I’d have access to what I need, and I’ll be put up in dorms. I’ll have my physical and finish up my contract, get equipment, meet with the coaches; I’m kind of getting the feel for how this is going to work.

“Getting drafted is definitely

something I’ve thought about and have been working very hard for.

Baseball has always been my best sport and it’s a dream come true to be able to play at the professional level.

“I knew how well I could play, but my freshman year of college was kind of disappointing. I transferred to junior college (McHenry County College) sophomore year and I caught my stride. The mental aspect of the game is a huge part of success; I went back to basics and put in a lot of work so I could bring my game to the next level.”

Brinkman transferred to Division I Creighton in Omaha, Neb., for the 2017 season, knocked his game up a notch and gained national attention for his defensive play when two of his diving catches in centerfield were featured on SportsCenter’s Top 10.

“That definitely didn’t hurt – getting those catches on SportsCenter,” he said.

What also helps tremendously is Brinkman’s work ethic.

IC Varsity Coach weighs in Zach Rodeghero was the Head Varsity Coach at ICCP in Elmhurst where Brinkman was a standout three-sport athlete in baseball, basketball and football. He also was a four-time All-Metro Suburban Conference baseball honoree who graduated with high honors.

“Clark has a winner’s mentality and he is most hard on himself because he has always strived for success,” said Rodeghero, who coached Brinkman as a four-year starter at ICCP. “He’s a competitor any coach would want on his team.

“First of all, he’s tall with a good, athletic build, and he has much quickness and athletic ability. He’s also extremely coachable and has big respect for the game.

“I got to know Clark and his family pretty well while I was coaching at IC. His dad was Clark’s biggest fan and a big fan of the team as well.

Knowing his late father is with him While Brinkman waited for his name to be called, his mom Sue and his brother Stone, 20, were right by his side. Missing was his dad Scott, who passed away suddenly at the age of 54 in April of 2017.

“I think my dad always had it in the back of his mind that [being drafted] might happen to me,” said Brinkman. “It was so special having my brother and mom with me and even though my dad wasn’t physical-

ly there, I knew he was with us, and I know he’s proud from up there.”

Clark Addison Brinkman’s first and middle names, obvious nods to the streets made famous by historic Wrigley Field, were not chosen on a whim.

“My parents met in the bleachers at Wrigley Field, so I have basically been born and raised a Cubs fan,” he said. “When the Tigers scout called me, one of the things he asked me if I was named for the streets…I told him I was. He actually thought it was pretty cool.

“He also told me he likes what he

sees from me and he likes my style of play. He told me he vouched for me within the Tigers’ organization, and that means a lot.

“As soon as I got drafted, my phone started blowing up. I think I’ve finally returned every text and I’m grateful for the support. I have some butterflies, but I think they’ll calm down once I get going down there in Florida.

“I can’t say for sure what the future holds...all I can do is become the best player I can be, and I believe I can move up within the organization…it’s just surreal.”

Bellwood man gets 22 years for role in Bensenville murder Suspect caught lying on the stand; State voids plea agreement

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced last week that Kenneth Bardlett, 24, of Bellwood, has been sentenced to 22 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) for his role in the 2014 murder of Bensenville tobacco store owner Hussein Saghir.

On March 27, 2014, Bardlett entered a plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, a Class X Felony, for the crime. As part of his plea agreement, Bardlett agreed to testify truthfully against any and all co-defendants involved in the murder. In exchange, the State agreed to a sentencing

recommendation of twenty years to be served at 85%.

During the trial against one of his codefendants however, Bardlett lied while on the witness stand. Consequently, the State filed a motion to withdraw the plea agreement. This motion was granted by the court and First Degree Murder charges were reinstated against Bardlett.

Additionally, the Court also found Bardlett in contempt of court for “engaging in unruly verbal and physical behavior” and for “providing false testimony” and sentenced Bardlett to 180 days in the County jail with credit for time served.

Two other men, both from Chicago, were charged in the murder - Tremayne Davis, 27 and Stephan Russell, 25. On December 2, 2016, Davis entered a plea of guilty to one count of Attempt Armed Robbery with a Firearm (Class 1 Felony) and sentenced to eight years in the IDOC.

Following a three-day-long trial in November 2017, a jury found Russell guilty of two counts of First Degree Murder and one count of Attempt Armed Robbery with a Firearm. Russell’s next court appearance was scheduled for June 18 for sentencing in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

At approximately 5:45 p.m., January 19, 2014, Bardlett, Davis and Russell went to the Sam’s Tobacco and Foodmart on Irving Park Road in Bensenville. While Davis remained in the vehicle, Bardlett and Russell encountered Saghir and his brother outside the store as the men were preparing to close up for the evening.

Following a brief altercation between the men, Saghir was shot and killed. After the murder, Bardlett, Davis and Russell fled the scene. An investigation led by the Bensenville Police Department, the Major Crimes Task Force and the DuPage County

State’s Attorney’s Office led authorities to the men.

“Regardless of what Mr. Bardlett has said or done in the past in relation to this case, the fact remains that Mr. Saghir is no longer here, able to share in the lives of his loved ones,” Berlin said. “For his role in the murder, Mr. Bardlett will now spend the next twenty-two years of his life behind bars. Our judicial system is a truthseeking process and for this system to work properly it must be safeguarded from misstatements, mischaracterizations and especially outright lies aimed at distorting the truth. Mr. Bardlett had a deal – to tell the truth when called upon. He chose to ignore that deal in an effort to infect the judicial system and in doing so added years to his prison sentence.”

Bardlett will be required to serve 100% of his sentence. He will receive credit for time served in jail awaiting trial.

He also stated an unknown person in the vehicle pointed a gun at him. The victim’s aunt transported him to the hospital where he declined to speak with officers without an attorney present.

June 9 A victim in the 100 block of Robert Palmer Drive told police at around 9:50 p.m. that an unknown suspect damaged his bicycle while it was parked in the bike rack at the above location. The bike’s front wheel was bent, brakes were damaged, and the bike was heavily scratched.

Disorderly conduct

June 14 Cynthia L. Palmer, 47, of Brookfield, was cited for disorderly conduct-public intoxication, possession of liquor in public in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 3:22 a.m. According to police, a complainant related that Palmer had been sitting in the restaurant for approximately six hours, did not order any food and when asked if she was OK, she requested police assistance. Police said Palmer had slurred speech, smelled of alcohol and was unable to care for herself. An officer was able to view an open bottle of alcohol inside her open bag, according to police.

June 11 A complainant in the 100 block of S. Berkley told police at around 3:43 p.m. that as her children were entering her vehicle, which was parked in her driveway, an unknown suspect drove past and threw a bag into her vehicle.

The victim’s son believes he saw a white older model sedan leaving the area at the time of the incident. The complainant is also missing her garage door opener, which was located in the center console.

June 10 Eric Johnsen, 49, of Wheaton, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/public intoxication in the 600 block of N. York at around 1:30 a.m.

June 8 Robert L. Baldwin, 68, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/public intoxication in the 200 block of N. Walnut at around 6:19 p.m.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, dispute, disturbance

June 12 Officers responded for a physical domestic in the 500 block of N. Van Auken at around 4:17 p.m. Officers were advised that a suspect

The area was searched with no results. An investigation is pending.

June 11 A victim at Langhorst Field, at Alexander and Myrtle on the campus of Elmhurst College, told police at around 8:42 p.m. that he went to the park with friends, and the suspect showed up, so they left the area. The suspect followed them, pushed the victim and scratched his neck. The suspect related as she approached, he raised his hand, so she pushed him and grabbed his neck, subsequently causing the scratch.

June 10 A victim in near St. Charles and West told police that a suspect battered her at around 6:30 a.m. The suspect, a 49-year-old Melrose Park man, was located and charged with domestic battery. He also had a warrant out of Peoria County, according to police. The victim was found to be wanted out of DuPage County.

June 7 Police said officers responded for a complaint in the 500 block of S. York of a man and woman involved in a domestic disturbance at around 3:53 p.m. Upon arrival, officers located both parties who admitted to arguing and fighting. Neither party admitted to any physical altercation with the other. Officers did not observe visible marks. Both parties were released at the scene.

June 10 Jose Gutierrez, 39, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and possession of open alcohol in public in the 600 block of W. St. Charles at around 11:36 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a complaint of a person drinking alcohol inside a parked vehicle, Gutierrez was located sleeping inside his vehicle. Police said officers noted the keys in the ignition and open alcohol inside the vehicle, and Gutierrez was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

Laila Al Lamadani, 38, of Naperville, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at around 1:33 a.m.

Sandra Mendoza-Ortiz, 43, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident expired registration and no insurance after registration suspended for an insurance violation in the 100 block of Fellows Court at around 10:14 p.m. Police said a victim observed Mendoza-Ortiz strike his vehicle and drive away.

June 7 Khalif Muhammad, 21,of Chicago, was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding, driving while license suspended, two counts of speeding, two counts of disobeying a traffic control device, failure to yield right of way, improper display of registration and no insurance, while a second suspect was released without charges, near Fairview and Surf at around 5:41 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, the vehicle driven by Muhammad refused to stop and fled the area. The vehicle was later stopped at I-290 and Harlem.

June 12 Christina Pickle, 31, of Villa Park, and Carla Baca, 24, of Chicago, were both charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, while Pickle also was charged with no rear registration plate light, subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Oak at around 2:18 a.m.

June 9 Mark Mendez-Contreras, 21, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis and no headlights subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Grantley at around 11:11 p.m.

Zonya Moctezuma, 19, of Chicago, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis, while William T. Kikos, 20, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug equipment subsequent to a suspicious vehicle in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 4:11 p.m.

June 8 Kimberley Wright, 29, of Glendale Heights, was charged with possession of cannabis, no valid driver’s license, no valid registration and no tail lights subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at around 12:24 a.m.

June 7 Jamie Ruiz, 43, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia near Lake and Route 83 subsequent to a traffic stop at around 4:50 a.m.

Tremell L. Wade, 33, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis (more than 30 grams), possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal transportation of alcohol, driving while license suspended, failure to signal and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Euclid at around 1:47 a.m. Police said Wade also had two warrants out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s office.

Suspicious circumstances

June 7 A reporting officer received information that a driver waived a gun within a vehicle while traveling on I-290 and Route 83 at around 10:32 a.m. The officer located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver acknowledged that he did have a handgun, empty along with magazines, inside a carrying case, located on the rear passenger floorboard. He told police he took the gun out to show it to the passenger in his vehicle, but denies waiving it around or pointing it at anyone. Due to both occupants possessing valid FOID cards, and

no complaints were to be signed. The subject was released at the scene.

A victim in the 100 block of S. Sunnyside told police at around 11:58 a.m. that he received a suspicious letter which indicated the sender had information that was negative in nature and would cause him great harm if released to his wife or friends. The letter instructed the victim to purchase bit coins and send it to a specific account.

June 13 Fernando Perez Jr., 37, of Chicago, was charged with two counts of retail theft, felony escape and possession of drug paraphernalia near North and Larch at around 5:31 p.m. Police said officers observed a suspicious person, and conducted a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle was charged driving while license suspended and disobeying a traffic control device.

According to police, Perez Jr. was found to be in possession of stolen merchandise, was arrested and fled the scene on foot. He was subsequently located and arrested.

Theft by deception was reported in the 800 block of S. Saylor at around 11:59 a.m. A victim told police they received a phone call claiming to be from ComEd and instructed the victim to purchase a MoneyPak Prepaid card.

The victim purchased the card and provided the serial number to the imposter.

Attempted identity theft was reported in the 600 block of S. Bryan at 5:11 p.m. A victim told police that after checking his online bank account statement, he found a fraudulent, pending transaction. He contacted his bank, froze his account and stopped the transaction.

There was no dollar loss.

June 12 Police said a resident related he witnessed three suspects described as black males scale a neighbor’s fence in the 400 block of Prairie at around 3:12 a.m. and enter an awaiting vehicle, which fled the area at a high rate of speed.

Officers searched the area and found personal property in the roadway. The suspects’ vehicle returned and was spotted by officers, who determined it was reported stolen. Officers followed the vehicle until they lost sight of it eastbound on I-290.

Contact was made with homeowner who confirmed the unlocked vehicle had been burglarized and cash was taken.

A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered her unlocked vehicle that was parked in the driveway and removed the garage door opener. account using the victim’s personal information. The credit card application was declined by the bank.

Warrant arrest

June 14 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and Industrial at around 12:25 a.m., Abelardo Burnette, 27, of Northlake, was found to have three valid warrants out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. He also was charged with driving while license revoked.

June 13 Police said that while a reporting officer was on patrol near North and I-294 at around 3:05 a.m., the officer observed the driver, Efim Rabinovitch, 58, of Skokie, and knew he was wanted on a warrant out of DuPage County. The officer conducted a traffic stop, and Rabinovitch was taken into custody, transported to the station, processed, posted bond and given a new court date, time and location.

Who are the people in your neighborhood?

Mr. Rogers made the most of his neighborhood. I try to do the same – by walking the different streets in the name of “exercise.”

As a bonus, along the way I make interesting and not-so-interesting observations. You can learn a lot by walking the neighborhood, which is completely different from casing the neighborhood. Which I do not condone or recommend. In any circumstance.

A yard sale indicates a neighbor has cleaned out their entire basement and not just a closet. A moving sale lets you know you will soon get new neighbors. And new neighbors can be exciting. You’ll never know if they’ll feed the birds or install a new fire pit or invite you over to sit on their deck. The possibilities are endless.

I’m pretty sure Mr. Rogers would agree.

Terminology changes as people change over time

There are some words I no longer use and it bums me out. (I suppose if I were British, I would not use the word bum, as it is a body part, the one we use to sit on.) Bum is actually an interesting word with a variety of meanings, besides buttocks.

Bum as in a bum knee, or a bum who begs for money on the street, or bum a cigarette, or a ski bum, or I will bum around town with no real plans, or as I used it, to disappoint.

How many other words have such width?

The former ski bum now has a bum leg and it bums him out. He just bums around town bumming money off of people, a true bum who sits on his bum all bummed out. Anyway, I digress. Bum is a word I still use, but there are words I no longer use because of pop culture.

Uber comes to mind. I used to write that I was uber grateful or uber this or that. Uber is a fun word, from the German, for “very” (or above, topmost, super). We went to an uber fancy restaurant last night. That dress is uber cute.

Now people only think of uber as the car for hire company. An uber great word has been hijacked from my vocabulary. The Uber of today was originally UberCab and in 2010 became simply Uber. Kids today will not know the real uber and if I use the word as an adjective, it will only confuse them. Perhaps I’ll do it anyway. And the car company is an uber smart idea.

Another word that has left my usage is the verb trump. I still use it when we play the card game Pitch, because you have to know what suit you are going in, as in what is “trump?” and there is no other word for it.

As a verb, trump means to be more important than something. For example, at my age, comfort trumps high fashion when I shop for shoes.

Per vocabulary. com: Originally trump implied a deceptive form of victory involving cheating, but that sense has been largely lost, though it’s still around in the term trumped up, meaning something that’s been falsely made up.

Trump is another great word that has now taken on loaded meaning.

I no longer say off-hand comments like “I trumped you” as the connotations run too many and too divisive.

There are also so many common words now that have new meanings thanks to the internet, technology, and social media. Tweet. Friend.

Like. Follow. Tag. Poke. Hook up.

Viral. Troll. Spam. New words are

also part of normal life. We now cannot live without Google or Amazon. Or how about selfie?

I’m still old enough that a hashtag used to be the pound sign (and to say things like “Happy as a clam”

although I have no clue where that comes from or if clams register any emotions at all. All I know is that when I went to type uber today in an email and I stopped. I deleted it and it sent my mind on this wild

goose chase of words and how things change. Such is life.

Park Board capsules Amen as its auditor since 1998. The district will reportedly pay the firm $15,000 for the 2017 audit, $15,300 for the 2018 audit and $15,600 for the 2019 audit. According to state law, units of local government are required to have an independent audit each year.

Audit of Sugar Creek approved The board also voted unanimously to accept the 2017 audit for Sugar Creek Golf Course. The accounting firm Selden Fox of Oak Brook completed the audit. Selden Fox was selected as the golf course’s auditing firm for 2015, 2016 and 2017. In 2015, the park district excluded the audit of the golf course from the scope of Lauterbach and Amen’s audit of the district.

Selden Fox’s 2017 audit of Sugar Creek Golf Course indicated total operating revenues of about $1,075,000 for the year, with total operating expenses of about $920,000. Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers noted that the course began 2017 with about $2.6 million in debt and ended the year with a little under $2.4 million in debt. He said the course continued to chip away at reducing its debt during 2017.

The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on June 11 at the district’s administrative office at 375 W. First Street.

Commissioner Doug Ennis was absent from the meeting. There were no public comments.

The board voted unanimously to approve the meeting’s consent agenda, which included an annual prevailing wage ordinance. Illinois state law requires park districts to determine the prevailing wage rates to be paid to laborers, mechanics and other workers hired for public works contracts.

Governor urged to protect state election system against cyber attacks

On Friday, June 8, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-8th District) wrote to Governor Bruce Rauner, along with Representatives Cheri Bustos (D-17th), Jan Schakowsky (D-9th), Luis Gutiérrez (D-4th), Bobby Rush (D-1st), Danny Davis (D-7th), Bill Foster (D-11th), and Daniel W. Lipinski (D-3rd), to urge the Illinois governor to work with the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies to protect Illinois’ election infrastructure against cyber-attacks in advance of the 2018 election.

The letter read as follows: “Dear Governor Rauner: “As you know, Illinois’s election system was targeted by concentrated hacking leading up to and during the 2016 election. In particular, hackers targeted voter data and voter registration systems in Illinois and 20 other states. Illinois has acknowledged that these attacked successfully breached voter systems, the only state to do so.

“It is clear that both states and the federal government must increase our cyber-security coordination efforts to protect against future attempts to compromise voter data or even tallying software. Such an attack could throw the results of an election into doubt, undermining people’s faith that their vote will be counted – a faith that is the cornerstone of any democratic system.

“Earlier this year, Congress appropriated $380 million for states to increase election security and update aging voting equipment. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security has begun working with state election officials to ensure that digital registration and voting systems across the country are secure and resilient. However, at a recent congressional briefing on May 22, 2018, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Director of National Intelligence, and the Director of the FBI all expressed continued concerns regarding weaknesses in American election systems that will leave our democracy vulnerable to further attack by Russia or other parties.

“With Election Day fast approaching, we encourage you to work with the federal government through DHS and other agencies to improve protections against future attack in Illinois and safeguard democracy in our state before our neighbors head to the polls in November. We hope you will recognize the gravity of this threat and prioritize this issue in the coming months.”

Courts Plus boiler to be replaced for $100,000 The board voted unanimously to award the 2018 Courts Plus Boiler Replacement Project to West Town Mechanical of Bensenville in the amount of nearly $100,000.

The current hot water boiler at the facility is nearly 30 years old and reportedly at the end of its useful life. The district submitted bids for the replacement of the existing boiler system, which was put into place during the 1989 expansion of the facility.

West Town Mechanical was the only firm to submit a bid for the project. The firm is the current HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) contract maintenance provider for Courts Plus.

The new system will reportedly offer improved energy efficiency and take up less space than the current boiler. The new unit should be installed in late July/early August.

The board will hold its next meeting on June 25.

Last Friday evening, a celebration of the 25th anniversary of Community Bank of Elmhurst took place at the American Legion Post. Among the guests were (from left): Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley, CBE Chairman Bill Gooch, Terry Griffin and David Schroeder. To honor the bank, Morley delivered a mayoral proclamation, declaring June 15 “Community Bank of Elmhurst Day” in the City. Griffin and Schroeder gave a presentation from the Illinois House of Representatives.

Play Ball!

Vintage Base Ball returns to Elmhurst on June 24

1858 ‘Base Ball’ Rules

Bases: The bases shall be placed 90 feet apart, and the pitcher’s plate shall be placed 45 feet from home plate and at the center of a line 12 feet long.

Pitching: The ball shall be pitched underhanded and as close as possible to the center of home plate, for the striker. The pitcher may begin his approach from any distance behind the pitcher’s plate, but must release the ball before either foot crosses the line. Otherwise, a balk is called, and the striker and runners are given a free base. Should the pitcher draw back his hand or move so as to give the impression that he is delivering the ball, he must do so, or a balk is called and the striker and runners are given a free base.

Fair and Foul Balls: A ball is considered foul if it either first touches the ground in foul territory or is caught on the fly in foul territory. Likewise, a ball that first touches ground in fair territory or is caught on the fly in fair territory is considered fair. The umpire is obligated to call all foul balls clearly and in a timely manner. The umpire does not announce fair balls.

Outs: A striker may be put out if a struck ball is caught on the fly or on the first bounce in fair or foul territory, or if he swings at and misses three pitched balls. If, however, the catcher fails to retrieve the ball on the third strike, either on the fly or the first bounce, the ball shall be deemed fair and the striker must attempt to advance. For purposes of play, only a ball that is swung at and missed constitutes a strike. However, should the umpire determine that a player is repeatedly allowing good balls to pass, he will warn the striker, after which he will begin calling strikes on all fair pitches allowed to pass.

Players may also be forced out at first base, or at any base where a force play would normally apply. In addition, if the player is touched by the ball in the hands of an adversary at any point when he is off base, he may be put out.

Fielding and Base Tenders: Any player who intentionally prevents an adversary from catching or fielding a ball shall be declared out. Adversaries shall not intentionally obstruct players attempting to make a base. If a player stops a ball with his cap or takes it from the hands of a party not engaged in the game, that ball must first settle into the hands of the pitcher before a player can be put out.

Striking: Strikers must proceed in an orderly fashion and must follow a designated lineup. In each inning of successive play, the first striker shall be the player listed in the lineup who follows the player who made the last out in the previous inning of play.

Bunting is not allowed, but players may employ a chop. There is no “home team advantage.” Feats of strength and skill or a coin toss determines who bats and fields first.

Advancing: Players may advance only on a fair ball that is not caught on the fly. If a ball is caught on the fly in fair or foul territory, players may not advance, even should they tag up. Players may return to their base and may not be put out unless

they remain off base until such time as the ball is returned to the pitcher and fairly pitched to the next striker. Runners should remain within three feet on either side of the base line.

Scoring: Runs are called aces. Players should respectfully ask the scorekeeper to “tally their ace.”

If a runner tallies an ace before the third out is made, that ace will be counted, so long as the striker does not constitute the third out.

Length of Play: The game shall consist of nine innings, unless the score be tied at the completion of the ninth inning, in which case, the game will continue until the tie be broken and the inning be completed. If play should need to be suspended before the completion of nine innings, and at least five innings should be completed, then the score achieved at the end of the last completed inning shall determine the outcome of the game. A full nine innings of play is expected, even if the last team at bat is already ahead in the bottom of the ninth.

Other: Players who over run first base do not get a free base.

Customs: While there were no rules against sliding, stealing and leading off, research indicates that in 1858, players rarely employed any of these practices. Consequently, to preserve the feeling of an 1858 game, clubs prohibit sliding, stealing and leading off. It is customary for each player to adopt a nickname and introduce himself to the fans before the start of the game. For the benefit of the “kranks” and the “kranklets,” and most importantly, the scorekeeper, players will announce their nicknames loudly each time they are at bat.

Sportsmanship: Base Ball Clubs in the 1850s and ‘60s (the term was originally written as two words in this era) were more than simply teams. They were often gentlemen’s clubs, and players practiced courtly behavior on and off the diamond. Players often called themselves out and cheered opponents for good play. Following matches, the captains of each team would often give a short speech, praising their opponents and of course, the fans. In the off season or following games, teams often held elaborate banquets and delivered eloquent speeches.

Uniform: By 1858, members of Base Ball Clubs donned uniforms. Typical uniforms of the era included a long-sleeved shirt (often white) with a lace up collar or shield front. Long pants were the norm, with knickers and long stockings emerging in the latter half of the 1860s.

A fitted, painter’s style cap completed the uniform.

Two or three stripes in the team colors often adorned the cap, with matching piping on the shirts. Stylized letters with the team name or initials completed the shirt. Pants might be white or might be in the team’s color. Less formal teams might pin a colored swatch of fabric to a work shirt to differentiate between teams. To simulate the look of the old-fashioned uniforms, players today will at the very least wear a white, long-sleeved shirt, dark pants, dark shoes and a painter’s style cap.

Huzzah! Let the “kranks” and the “kranklets” cheer and boo, and call the “strikers” up to “the dish.”

Vintage Base Ball returns to Elmhurst on Sunday, June 24 at 2 p.m. with a fun game played by the wildly different rules of 1858.

The Elmhurst History Museum and Elmhurst Heritage Foundation present a Vintage Base Ball Game on the Elmhurst College Mall (in front of Hammerschmidt Chapel) on the campus.

Fans will learn to cheer and jeer in fine Victorian fashion as two Elmhurst clubs play for their favor.

The Elmhurst History Museum Executive Director Dave Oberg will

lead the activities in the role of “barrister” (an umpire by today’s standards) and share the rules and slang with the audience. The roster includes a number of local Elmhurst community leaders and elected officials.

Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic basket and lawn chairs to enjoy a family-friendly game played by true sportsmen from an era of wooden bats and iron men.

This event is free and open to the public, and no tickets are required.

Visitation 3rd graders code their way to victory

A handful of third graders at Visitation School have joined an after-school club called, “Let’s Code It,” to learn about coding. They worked at home creating games with a program called Scratch.

Full Court Press: Kids basketball clinic raises funds for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Loyola men’s basketball stars at clinic fundraiser

Kids in grades 5-8 are invited to lace up your sneakers and head over to the Campbell Gymnasium at York Community High School on Sunday, June 24 for an action-packed afternoon of fun, fame and fundraising.

Northwestern Mutual-Chicago is partnering with Elmhurst Airborne Basketball and Hoops Intensity Training to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

“Every day, 43 children are diagnosed with cancer and parents are looking for treatment options,” said Corey D. McQuade, Managing Partner of Northwestern Mutual – Chicago. “By raising funds, we can support research into new treatments and cures so that in the future every

child will be enjoying their summers and heading back to school in the fall.”

The fundraising event will feature a basketball clinic for 5th through 8th graders led by Elmhurst Airborne Basketball Coach Bill Baldridge and his team at Hoops Intensity Training.

A Q&A and autograph session with Loyola Rambler Clayton Custer and his teammates will provide a look into the Cinderella team ’s march to the Final Four.

The event will be held from 1 - 3 p.m. The 5th & 6th grade clinic will run from 1-1:30 p.m. All are invited to the Q&A and autograph session, which starts at 1:30 p.m. The 7th & 8th grade clinic will run from 2:30

p.m. until 3:00 p.m. The suggested donation is $10 per child.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer, Northwestern Mutual’s national philanthropic partner that is dedicated to eradicating childhood cancer.

Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children from ages 1 to 19 in the U.S. Yet, childhood cancer research and services are vastly and consistently underfunded.

Northwestern Mutual launched its Childhood Cancer Program in 2012 to accelerate the search for cures to childhood cancers and to provide support to families battling the disease.

Illinois Special Olympians head to Nationals

Special Olympics Illinois has announced that 46 athletes, four Unified Partners and 13 coaches will be representing the state of Illinois at the 2018 USA Games to be held July 1-6 in Seattle. A premier, national sports competition, the Special Olympics USA Games takes place every four years to showcase the power and joy of sports at the highest levels. This year, more than 4,000 athletes and coaches from all 50 states and the District of Columbia will descend upon Seattle and the surrounding region.

Among the athletes chosen to participate is Elmhurst resident Ryan Kubicz, who plays for Gateway Special Recreation Association (SRA).

Ryan will compete in basketball while in Seattle.

Athletes will compete in 14 various sports contests, including swim-

ming, flag football and soccer. As many as 10,000 volunteers will come out to support the Games. Also expected are as many as 10,000 families and friends and a total of 70,000 spectators.

Organization to celebrate 50th anniversary in Chicago Special Olympics will celebrate its 50th Anniversary this July 17-21, 2018 in Chicago, home of the first games in 1968. Scheduled events include the first-ever Special Olym-

pics Unified Football (Soccer) Cup tournament, the dedication and lighting of the Special Olympics Eternal Flame of Hope monument outside Soldier Field and the first-ever Global Day of Inclusion. It will be held at Soldier Field in Chicago. The Inclusion Fest Concert at the Northerly Island amphitheater will feature internationally-acclaimed music acts.

Cohab & Company makes debut with ribbon cutting event Elmhurst co-working community gives new meaning to ‘summer hours’

“School’s Out for Summer” is not only a classic song by Alice Cooper, but it is also a concentration buster for those that work from home. Luckily, Cohab & Company’s co-working community is now open at 107 Adell Place in Elmhurst’s City Centre.

The locally-owned and operated shared working space kicked off the summer with a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 1 with the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

“We’re bringing a sophisticated co-working environment to the Elmhurst community,” said co-founder of Cohab & Company, Michelle Steber.

“We recognized the need for a commute-friendly co-working space for remote workers in the area.

From there, Cohab & Company was created.”

Attendees of the June 1st ribbon cutting ceremony will be eligible to receive a 20% discount on daily and monthly passes for June and July.

ICGS celebrates retirement of four longtime teachers, staff On the morning of Friday, May 25, faculty, staff, students, alumni and alumni parents packed into the Immaculate Conception Parish Chapel for a Mass to celebrate the retirement of four longtime faculty and staff members.

Retirees included: Sara Donovan, who has taught at Immaculate Conception Grade School for the past 33 years. Her family joined her at the Mass.

Maureen Shaw has been administrative assistant in the school office for the past 22 years. She was joined by family members including her first grandchild Molly Shaw.

Linley told the audience that ICGS had recently been named a “Jewel of Elmhurst” by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry. She went on to compare the qualities of these women to those of diamonds.

“Their clarity of purpose and brilliance in living out their vocations within a Catholic Education environment have brought tremendous value, beauty, and light to the lives of so many children,” she said.

Sara Donovan, whose legacy at ICGS includes passionate lessons about poetry, patriotism, public speaking, and history, then addressed the crowd. She recounted the experience of immense joy she has enjoyed through her 33 years at ICGS, by seeing her wide-eyed students immerse themselves in subjects close to her heart.

She spoke of Sharon McElmeel, her teaching partner for many years, and their recreation of the Columbian Exposition, medieval feasts, and trips with students and parents to George Williams College in Williams Bay, Wisc.

Donovan also recalled her friendships with fellow ICGS teachers who have passed away, especially second grade teacher Marcia May, who lost her battle with cancer last fall. She ended her comments with a poem, “Barter,” by Sara Teasdale. A reception followed the Mass in IC’s Monsignor Plunkett Hall.

Visitation’s Father Michael raises funds, loses beard Father Michael Kearney of Visitation Parish wanted to do something special for families that are in need of tuition assistance at the school.

The Sister Thomas Leo fund was set up to help families in need and Father Michael wanted to raise money to go into that fund. As incentive to raising money, Father Michael told families and parishioners that if he was able to raise money, enough to cover at least one student’s tuition, he would shave his beard that he has had for quite some time.

The Visitation community pulled together and Father Michael raised almost $7,000. He kept his word and at the Faith Rally, which took place on the last day of school, Father Michael shaved his beard in front of the entire school.

Uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms can be a major barrier for those attempting to recover from addiction to opioids.

“You might experience bad flu-like symptoms, such as muscle aches and fatigue,” says Aaron Weiner, PhD, Director of Addiction Services at Linden Oaks Behavioral Health in Naperville. “There are ways of managing these symptoms. Although withdrawal from opioids can’t kill you, it can be extremely unpleasant, stopping many from wanting to move forward towards health.”

The first option, ongoing medication-assisted therapy, can be initiated either in an inpatient or outpatient environment. Some addiction programs administer methadone, but at the Linden Oaks Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) Clinic, patients receive Suboxone, which is a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone, which is used to reverse overdoses.

“Buprenorphine is less sedating than methadone and easier than methadone to taper off from when the person is ready to stay sober without any pharmaceutical assistance,” says Dr. Weiner.

According to the Merck Manual Consumer Version, “In many countries, buprenorphine has replaced methadone in detoxification programs.”

West Suburban Symphony Orchestra Saturday, July 14, 7:30 p.m.

Join Maestro Peter Lipari and the West Suburban Symphony for “Heartland,” a musical tour of Amer-

ica from Appalachia to the Wild West. Enjoy John Williams’ music from the 2012 movie Lincoln in celebration of the Illinois Bicentennial, selections from Aaron Copland’s Rodeo ballet, and medleys of favorite American songs.

A Symphony Passport (non-paper ticket) is required for each concert.

Cost: $30 in advance or $35 the week of show; Cantigny Park members pay $25. A Passport admits one car and passengers, up to four people total. Passports may be purchased at Cantigny.org, in the Cantigny Shop or by calling 630-260-8162.

Picnics are encouraged for these Ravinia-style events, performed on the plaza outside the First Division Museum. Gates open at 6 p.m. Blankets or chairs are recommended as seating is on the lawn.

Villa Park VFW gears up for 4th of July parade The Villa Park VFW Post 2801 will host Villa Park’s Annual 4th of July Parade. The Parade will be held on Wednesday, July 4, stepping off promptly at 12 noon from from the Trinity Lutheran Church lot. It will proceed west down Central to Harvard, turn south on Harvard to Madison, then east on Madison to Summit, then north on Summit to Park, west on Park to Ardmore, then north to disperse.

This year’s Parade theme is “State of Illinois – 200 Years of Freedom.”

The Parade Grand Marshall for 2018 will be Roy Ruth, a U. S. Marine Corps veteran who served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima. He was a Tank Corp Observer, being in advance of the armored units and directing their fire on enemy emplacements. He

became a member of the Villa Park VFW Post 2801 in 1950 and moved to Villa Park in 1953, where he has been in residence ever since.

For those businesses, civic groups and anyone wishing to participate in the Parade, applications are now being accepted. There are applications available at villaparkvfw.org and on the Villa Park Chamber of Commerce web site at villaparkchamber. org Tax deductible donations to the Post to help defray the cost of the Parade are always welcome.

There will be a beer tent set up near the Gazebo on Park Avenue between Ardmore and Yale following the parade. There will be free hot dogs and water for Parade participants.

York softball team enjoys historic run Dukes qualified for state finals for second time in five years

The hits keep coming for the York softball team.

The Dukes recently placed six players on the all-West Suburban Conference Silver Division team.

York won the conference title this season with an 11-1 mark.

Earning all-conference accolades were Katherine Karnatz, Kyra Kroll, Madison Collins, Izzy Smith, Jane Moran and freshman pitcher Lauren Derkowski.

The Dukes advanced all the way to the Class 4A state semifinals.

York finished fourth in the state.

“We had a great season,” said York coach Elizabeth Munn. “It was the first time in five years that we made it downstate. We had a good group of seniors with a lot of experience on the field. We’re losing seven seniors, which is huge.

But what a terrific group. They made a good run and fought for all of it. The good news is that minus one senior, our whole pitching staff is coming back. This group will put up another good fight next season and we have a good group coming in.”

Munn said leadership played a key role in the team’s success this season. “I really liked our leadership and the expertise they brought to the plate and the game,” she said. “They got it and they realized if they wanted to go far they had to put in the work and they were more than willing to do that. Some of the girls on the team had played together since they were eight. It is such a unique group and an experienced group. We had so much fun and we made a good run. Next year might be a little bit of a rebuilding year, but we have a lot of kids who get the game and that’s great to see.”

Munn wasn’t surprised at how far York went this season. “I told them in the beginning of the season that if we pull together we have an opportunity to go far,” she said.

“This was a goal of theirs throughout the season. They were excited about the season and excited about the new additions to the team. I saw the potential in this team that we could go far.”

Munn also took a moment to laud the efforts of freshman pitcher Der-

kowski who struck out 256 batters this season.

“Talk about grit and resilience,” she said. “What a great leader who has a good attitude. She is a terrific athlete who will do anything for you. She’s coachable and she knows the game and thinks the game. She wants to get better and always is in 100 percent of the time. She shows a dedication to the sport, which is not easy. She gives 100 percent to the team. She will continue to get better as time goes by, which she proved throughout the season.”

Munn noted numerous players on the team will continue their careers at the next level. Kroll is headed to Western Illinois University, while Collins will play at Carleton College in Minnesota. Andrea Meagher will play at Marian College in Wisconsin, while Mia Tran will head to Elmhurst College. Moran will study at the University of Illinois and will try and walk-on to the softball team.

Annie Grasse has been accepted academically at Northwestern, while Lauren Wojcik is headed to the University of Nebraska for academics.

“Having five or six girls move on to play is huge,” said Munn.

“That’s a big group.”

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team completes fine season Knights advanced all the way to Class 1A supersectional

IC Catholic Prep’s strong girls soccer season did not go unnoticed.

The Knights placed numerous players on the all-conference and all-sectional teams.

Grace Fuller and Olivia Hurt were named to the all-sectional team while Bella Leslie was named to the all-sectional honorable-mention team.

Fuller, Sophie Zanoni and Hurt were named to the all-Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division team for their efforts.

IC Catholic Prep finished the season 16-11 overall and went 3-3 in conference play. The Knights won regional and sectional titles and finished as one of the top eight

teams in Class 1A after competing in a Class 1A supersectional.

“We weren’t projected to do that well because we lost a big group,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Antonio Godinez. “We had a good season. We had a stronger strength of schedule and faced some tough teams throughout the season. We took some losses, but they were competitive losses that prepared us for the state tournament.”

Godinez said a number of factors played into the team’s long playoff run. “They had good communication and a strong soccer IQ,” he said. “They improved and they worked together. The girls knew they needed each other much more.

They relied on each other more as the season went on.”

Godinez was in his first year as the Knights’ head coach. “They have an ability to adapt to different coaching,” he said. “They had gone through a coaching change. Grace Fuller had different coaches freshman, sophomore and senior year.

They did a great job adapting to a different style of coaching.”

Fuller and Hurt were the team leaders in goals. “For us it was more about unselfish play,” said Godinez. “We had a lot of people score for us, it was not just Grace and Olivia. The distribution of goals to other players was important. Sophie Zanoni, Bella Leslie, Abi Wagner and Sophie Hurt, who is a freshman, were some of the

others who scored big goals for us. We had two girls who led us in scoring, but we also had other girls who came up with some big goals for us.”

Godinez said a pair of unsung heroes on the team were Sophie Hurt and Annie Guinan. “With them our defensive awareness went up,” he said. “Sophie Hurt scored goals and did well in the back for us. Annie is the other person who really stepped up. She played right back last year and was tremendous in the back for us this year. She did really well in the playoffs and got better. They anchored the back and managed the back for us. To have a sophomore and a freshman in the back guiding juniors and seniors on the outside doesn’t happen very often. They solidified the back for us.”

Godinez noted the team loses seniors Fuller, Zanoni, Jalene Pina and goalie Rochelle Spizzirri. “We have a good core coming back,” he said. “It’s a young core with sophomores, juniors and a couple freshmen. We should have the opportunity to do well again.”

Elmhurst Lacrosse 10U boys team wins IBLA title Squad defeats strong Fox Valley program in final

The Elmhurst Lacrosse 10U Titans team recently capped off its season in style.

Elmhurst won the Illinois Boys Lacrosse Association championship (statewide playoffs) with three victories over Tinley Park, Lake Zurich and Fox Valley.

Elmhurst, whose team is comprised of fourth-grade players, kicked things off in the playoffs with a 5-4 win against the Tinley Park Bulldogs and then defeated Lake Zurich Blue 6-3 before downing Fox Valley No. 3 by a 6-4 count to win the IBLA championship in Glen Ellyn.

Team players include Jack Paschen, George Redfearn, Hunter Hanselman, Socrates Kapotas, Josh Venzor, Shane Trainer, Dean Kemph, Jack Lotito, AJ Olson, Mickey Schermer, Charlie Malcolm, Kade Imburgia, Trevor Rice, Jackson Nesheim, Simon Kodosky and Drew Pettorelli.

“Some of the guys on our team had zero experience coming into the season and some had a season or two,” noted Elmhurst coach Jason Nesheim. “We had kind of an up-and-down season, but we evolved at the end, were highly competitive and looked great.”

Nesheim noted the team lost to Fox Valley earlier in a May tournament final. “They were one of our biggest competitors,” he said. “We ended up finishing second to them in May and then were able to turn the tables on them. We knew what each other’s strengths and weaknesses were going into the game. Both teams were very familiar with each other. We flipped

the game on them and moved the ball around the perimeter and waited for a scoring opportunity and capitalized.

It was pretty impressive to see. Fox Valley typically has strong teams. For us, it’s one team with no cuts. What our guys did is highly impressive. We went in there and competed with them and won against a highly functional lacrosse program.”

Nesheim said team chemistry was at the top of the list of positives for his group.

“The best thing they did was come together as a team,” he said. “They moved the ball around.”

And Elmhurst wasn’t too shabby on defense either, Nesheim explained.

“Our defense played outstanding,” he said. “Our goalie was on point com-

pletely. And then our attack capped it.

We moved the ball around straight up the field. It was flawless. What won us the game is us moving the ball around so quickly.”

Elmhurst played eight league games, the May tournament and then the playoffs.

“It was great to see our team that is a mix of entry-level kids and kids with some experience come in and win games and win a tournament and do well,” said Nesheim. “To do this well at such a young age group says a lot. Our goal is get kids into the sport and eventually funnel them to the high school. Seeing young kids win championships tells you there is good talent coming up the pipeline. We’re very proud of this group.”

Whartnaby named new Timothy Christian baseball coach Takes over for Jim Snoeyink, who retired after 37 years at the helm

Timothy Christian didn’t have to look far for its new head baseball coach.

The school recently announced assistant coach Brian Whartnaby has been promoted to the top dugout post. Whartnaby previously has been the JV coach for four years and also was the varsity assistant coach for two years, including this past season.

Whartnaby takes over for longtime coach Jim Snoeyink, who retired after 37 years at the helm. Snoeyink led Timothy Christian to supersectional appearances in 2017 and 2018.

Whartnaby, who also coached a season at Wheaton Academy, was a catcher at Wheaton College and played pitcher and catcher at Libertyville High School.

Whartnaby was appreciative of his time coaching with Snoeyink. “Jim knows the game well,” he said. “He was a good leader and created a good environment for the players. They liked playing for him. He knows the ins and outs of the game. He has the program going in the right direction in terms of winning and the facility improving, plus the individual success of the players going on to play in college. He laid a really good foundation.”

Whartnaby, who teaches AP U.S. history at Timothy, is simply looking forward to sharing his passion for the game with Timothy’s players.

“I’ve always loved the game of baseball,” he said. “It’s an excellent way to teach life lessons to young men. As a pitcher and catcher, I’ve always wanted to coach and get into the nitty-gritty of the game. I love teaching hitting and pitching and all the other stuff. I was called to be a teacher. And at Timothy this is a special way to impact young men through athletics by being a good role model for them. This is a great

opportunity. We have more enthusiasm and talent coming through the system. We’re also losing a group of seniors, but we have some good players coming back. We’re moving up to Class 3A next season (The IHSA recently announced 2018-2019 classifications and Timothy’s baseball team is indeed moving up from 2A to 3A next spring). It’s a good challenge. I enjoyed coaching with Jim and coaching the JV team. Now it’s on to the next chapter and that’s to continue on with a very good varsity baseball program.”

Whartnaby’s goals in the shortterm are simple. “We want to continue our winning ways and prepare these guys to be baseball players at the next level for those who want to do it,” he said.

“We have a great environment here. Guys are learning life lessons through baseball such as learning to deal with failure, teamwork and having a strong work ethic. We’ve created an environment here at Timothy where that happens. I want to continue to evolve that.”

Elmhurst American Legion U17 splits pair of road games Muddogs U19 team defeats Elgin Post 57

The Elmhurst junior American Legion Post 187 team split a pair of recent road games.

In a 20-11 loss to Moultrie-Douglas American Legion Post 479 at Shelbyville High School, the two teams combined for 31 runs and 29 hits, but Elmhurst was stung by six errors.

Moultrie-Douglas led 7-1 after two innings and then strung together 13 more runs over the fourth and fifth innings.

Alexis Cotto went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jose Alvarez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI. Alanzo Howard went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Nathan Kriz went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Andrew Pietrucha went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Nick DeSimone had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Justin Lomax had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Howard doubled, while Alvarez hit a grand-slam home run.

Tommy Ryan took the loss. Five Elmhurst players pitched in the game. Eight of the runs allowed were unearned.

In a 7-0 win over Piat County Post 39 at Monticello High School, Elmhurst scored two runs in the second and five more in the fifth. Post 187 had nine hits in the contest.

Jack Ryan had a hit and an RBI. Alvarez had a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Tommy Ryan went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Dave Skyora had two hits, a run scored and two RBI. Michael Hilgart had a hit and a run scored. Pietrucha had a hit and an RBI, while Cotto had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Alvarez, Hilgart, Ryan and Syko-

ra each had doubles. Jack Ryan and Tommy Ryan each stole two bases.

Sykora pitched a five-hit, complete-game shutout. He struck out eight and walked two to earn the win.

Post 187 U19 wins two The Elmhurst Post 187 U19 American Legion team went 2-1 last week.

In a 7-3 conference victory over Elgin Post 57 at Wing Park in Elgin, Elmhurst trailed 3-2 heading into the sixth inning before scoring four in the sixth and one in the seventh. Elmhurst had 10 hits.

Joe Orrico had a hit and an RBI. Tommy Ryan had two hits, a run scored and two RBI. Ivan Lozada had a run scored and an RBI. Jordan Vogel had an RBI. Brendan Russ went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Vince Bilotti had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Mason Kamp had two hits and two runs scored. Russ, Orrico and Bilotti each had a double.

Russ was the winning pitcher.

He went seven innings and allowed eight hits and two earned runs, while striking out five and issuing only one walk.

The Muddogs then notched a 7-6 win over Pirates Baseball in a game played at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

Elmhurst returned to conference action where it lost 5-0 to Wheaton Post 76. Elmhurst was limited to two hits in the game and trailed 4-0 after two innings.

Orrico and Jack Enright each had a hit. Tamaine Durr took the loss. He struck out three and allowed only one earned run. Vogel pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief and struck out five.

Elmhurst had a busy early-week schedule this week with games scheduled against Lake in the Hills Post 1231 on the road and then ballgames with Elgin Post 57 and Highland, Indiana Post 180 at Plunkett in Elmhurst.

Runners and walkers aim to conquer rare disease Strides Against MG 5K nets $26,000

The 6th Annual Strides Against MG 5K Fun Run/Walk welcomed 230 participants on Sunday, June 3, at Berens Park. The walk raised $26,000 for Conquer Myasthenia Gravis, a nonprofit organization that funds MG patient assistance and research, and provides patient education and support.

“The whole family loved it, and we’re already planning a bigger team for next year,” noted Lonnie Smith, a retired firefighter and paramedic from Libertyville.

Lonnie discovered he has MG after experiencing double vision, a common first symptom.

“I was in Costco, picking up a cake for my son’s birthday,” he said. “As my wife Donna came toward me, I saw two of her.”

Shortly after Lonnie was diagnosed, he spent time in the ICU with

a full-blown MG breathing crisis.

Now he and his wife attend Conquer MG’s North Suburban MG support group.

“We came out today to support the group and raise funds,” he said. “We really enjoyed the day.”

“This year we added a 5K Fun Run for fitness enthusiasts,” said Board chair Bob Rosecrans. “Folks dressed like Viking conquerors, and we saw some great helmets and shields. Like the name says, we’d love to conquer MG.” Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease that causes fluctuating weakness. Conquer MG has been providing patient support and education and funding research for 45 years. DuPage Animal Services unveils specialty veterinary vehicle DuPage County Animal Services and DuPage Animal Friends today unveiled a new, state-of-theart, 26-foot, specialty veterinary vehicle for DuPage County Animal Services (DCAS). The specialty veterinary vehicle is the result of a donation from the Brooks McCormick Jr. Trust for Animal Rights Law and Policy to DuPage Animal Friends, made possible

by DuPage Animal Friends board member Amanda Yancey.

The specialty veterinary vehicle is equipped with a fully-operational surgical suite, treatment/exam area, and housing for cats and dogs. The vehicle is capable of supporting mobile spay/neuter and other surgical procedures, dentistry, diagnostic procedures such as X-ray, blood work, grooming, microchipping, vaccinations and more. When not providing medical services, the vehicle can also double as a mobile adoption unit.

“For the first time ever, DCAS will be able to provide targeted mobile spay/neuter and veterinary services to our rescue partners and to the public, provide medical assistance via emergency disaster response and mobilize our humane education and adoption efforts,” said Animal Services Committee Chairman Brian Krajewski. “This vehicle is a gamechanger for animals and pet owners in and around DuPage County.”

The specialty veterinary vehicle will allow Animal Services to further their mission of “saving animals and serving people” by getting assistance and resources to pet owners where it is most needed.
