Public Arts Commission seeks art submissions Deadline is June 30 Formed in 2018, the City’s Public Arts Commission seeks to improve the overall aesthetic appeal and appreciation of art in our community. The Commission is working to highlight, promote, and sponsor art throughout the community.

As a result, the City of Elmhurst aims to build on its cultural assets with a sculptural work for a new city park. The recently-formed Commission seeks proposals from emerging and established Midwest artists for an outdoor sculpture.

Call for artwork: Midwest artists are encouraged to submit proposals for a permanent outdoor sculpture that would visually enhance the public spaces of Elmhurst and expand its cultural offerings.

Timeline The anticipated schedule represents the Elmhurst Public Arts Commission’s best estimate of the schedule that will be followed in selecting artwork.

• Deadline for Receipt of Requests for Proposals: June 30 at 5 p.m.

• Commission and City review, site visits, and interviews with candidates: July – September 9 • Commission Selection Completed and Finalist Notified: September 30 • Installation Period: Starts as early as October 1, depending on weather, ambition of selected work, and flexibility After the Commission has received all qualifications and selects the awardee, the contract negotiation process will commence. About ‘Art from the Heart’ The City of Elmhurst’s Public Arts Commission recently sponsored an interactive program at Art In The Park, bringing together residents to celebrate the four ceramic columns created in the 1998 Illinois clay stomp “Art from the Heart.”

Led by John Nester, who coordinated the original 1998 columns, participants worked with clay to

reenact the tile creation. Nester displayed pictures of the original installation, and its 2017 renovation. He recalled the history of the creation.

“It was such a wonderful experience because so many people donated their time, talent and experience,” Nester said.

The original columns were created by community members, who mixed the clay with their feet and then designed tiles. The tiles were

bisque, and glaze fired over the course of a year in Nester’s art room at York Community High School, and then installed on June 28, 1998.

The images on the tiles include references to science, a memorial for a beloved family member, travels and other aspects of life the participants found meaningful. They are located in Wilder Park, to the north of the Elmhurst Art Museum, located at 150 S. Cottage Hill Ave., Elmhurst.

Fire Department earns Park Board Commissioner retires after 24 years of service hospital’s ‘Run of the Month’ Board looks to the future with new members Elmhurst Hospital’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has awarded its “Run of the Month” for Dec. 2018 to the Elmhurst Fire Dept.

Crew members were recognized for their care on Dec. 2 of a 45-yearold man who was suffering a heart attack.

Following several shocks with an automated external defibrillator and use of an automated chest compression device, the patient was transported to the Elmhurst Hospital Emergency Department. He was

later treated in Elmhurst Hospital’s cardiac catheterization lab where a stent was inserted to treat a blocked coronary artery. He was discharged from the hospital two weeks later.

In the “Run of the Month” program, Elmhurst Hospital’s EMS Team reviews ambulance runs by pre-hospital providers and selects one to be recognized based on certain criteria.

Serving as a volunteer board member for a local unit of government can seem intimidating to some, but for Patricia Morrisette-Moll, it became a passion.

After attending more than 500 board meetings, countless events, and being part of numerous largescale projects, Morrisette-Moll was recognized at the April 22 Park Board meeting for her 24 years of service to the board.

Throughout her tenure on the board, MorrisetteMoll played a part in a number of significant projects ranging from the renovation of Wilder Mansion and multiple intergovernmental agreements to the creation of The Hub at Berens Park and the

completion of The Playground for Everyone, an inclusive playground at Butterfield Park. She also had a role in the installation of the Marjorie Davis Community Garden, rebuilding of East End and Smalley Pools, the construction and completion of the Salt Creek Greenway Trail, and the construction of the softball diamond at Salt Creek Park in partnership with Elmhurst College.

Old Elmhurst: Personal recollections of a native Part 2 A history provided by Dr. Frederick H. Bates

[Ed. note: The Elmhurst Independent has been given the opportunity to bring stories of local history to its readers, courtesy of the Elmhurst History Museum. These stories, taken from a publication called “Old Elmhurst,” were printed serially in the Elmhurst Press, during the winter of 1919 and 1920. The Independent will print Dr. Bates’ recollections periodically in its upcoming issues. For the most part, Dr. Bates’ language has been unchanged, but part of the story has been edited for length.]

The … glowing stories, told by returning travelers, of the “boundless prairies” farther west, where it was not necessary to clear the land before cultivation, awakened the pioneer spirit, long latent, in my father [Gerry Bates], impelling him to investigate. Starting westward, late in March, 1842, in a light one horse cutter, he thought he could reach Chicago in three weeks, but the winter of 1841 and ’42 was long and very severe. The snow was so deep, that, at times, his horse could not pull the sleigh through the huge drifts. The route lay through Michigan and Indiana, a mere trail, and only after the greatest hardships, even to one inured, as he was, to the life of a frontier-man from childhood, did he reach Chicago on May 4, 1842. Had he not been a man of great physical strength, strictly temperate, he could not have succeeded.

derness at the age of eight years he had few advantages in his education and upbringing, and the success of his healthful, vigorous and useful career was due entirely to his own application.

The hardships attendant on the life of a pioneer, following dogs in hunting and trapping in the woods; nutting, swimming and fishing, not only helped to form a vigorous and active constitution, but gave a keenness in observation; a resourcefulness in emergencies; a quickness of eye and a love of fellowship with nature which the present generation runs a risk of losing, with its exaggeration of formal games with fenced playgrounds.

My father was a large man, an

“old school gentleman”, always clean-shaven, wearing, during the years that I knew him, a long-tailed, black coat, with an old-fashioned wide collar and a black satin stock.

I never saw him wear anything but a “stove-pipe” hat, of the style made familiar by the pictures of Abraham Lincoln. In politics he was, before the war of the Rebellion, an “Old Line Whig”, subsequently, a staunch Republican.

“His life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him, that Nature might stand up and say to all the world—This is a man.”

Trent Lawrence had a rude awakening early last week. Overnight, mice had gotten into the greenhouse on his farm and eaten several dozen trays of seedlings he was planning to transplant into a field.

Lawrence and his wife, Jami, work a 26-acre farm outside of Delavan, about 30 miles south of Peoria, in Tazewell County. For the past several years, they’ve been growing organic peppers, tomatoes and a variety of other specialty crops. But this year, they’re starting a new crop that became legal in Illinois only earlier this year, industrial hemp, and that’s what the mice found especially tasty.

At a cost ranging from 25 cents to $1 per seed, rodents in the greenhouse are just one of many risks that Illinois hemp farmers face.

Fortunately for Lawrence, the damage was minimal. He has hundreds more seedlings growing in that same greenhouse, and hundreds more on top of that germinating under lights in an upstairs room of the house that sits on the property.

With luck, each of those plants will grow to produce one to two pounds of flower rich in a compound called

cannabidiol, more commonly known as CBD, which when extracted can be used to control a wide range of medical conditions including seizure disorders. And with market prices ranging from $80 to $100 a pound, depending on its CBD content, that makes each one of those seedlings extremely valuable.

That industry, however, became possible only in recent years. Since the 1930s, industrial hemp had been illegal in the United States, with a brief exception during World War II, because it was classified as a narcotic in the same category as marijuana.

It was only in 2014 that Congress began allowing states to authorize limited production for research purposes, and it was finally legalized completely in the 2018 Farm Bill, which Congress passed in December.

“Six months ago, this would have been the mother of all felonies,” Lawrence said as he looked around his greenhouse. “It’s no joke. Until the 2018 Farm Bill was signed, it was still under controlled substance territory. This would have been a Schedule I drug, but since they deregulated CBD—they removed CBD out of the Schedule I drug category.”

Lawrence said the plants classify

as industrial hemp as long as they test below 0.3 percent Tetrahydrocannabinol, more commonly known as THC, the principal psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture began accepting applications for licenses to grow industrial hemp on April 30, and as of June 10, according to agency figures, the state had issued licenses to 474 growers covering just over 12,103 acres.

That’s actually quite small compared to the 11 million acres of corn the state produced in 2017, or the 10 million acres of soybeans farmers grew that same year.

In terms of income potential, however, there is little comparison.

In 2017, according to the Illinois Department of Agriculture, corn production in Illinois averaged 201 bushels per acre, and it sold for $3.35 a bushel, or $673.35 per acre. Soybeans yielded roughly $556.80 per acre.

But some in the industry believe a quality hemp crop that’s geared toward CBD production could generate as much $90,000 to $160,000 an acre, depending on how much flower the plants yield and how much CBD they contain.

May, 1842, that my father drove over the sand dunes of Indiana, just beyond where the huge steel mills of Gary, and the oil tanks of Whiting now stand. Muffled up in a heavy bear-skin coat made from the pelts of animals he had shot and dressed; he rode along behind the little white mare who struggled bravely through the deep snow.

As the sun went down, and it grew darker and darker, with no habitation in sight, he knew that he must camp out, so selecting a sheltered spot, under a clump of stunted trees, where the ground was almost free from snow, he made ready to spend the night. The experience was not by any means a new one, for during the long journey of over five hundred miles he had been obliged to sleep “out doors” several times, and he was prepared for the emergency.

The horse, unharnessed, blanketed, and securely tied to one of the trees, was soon munching oats quite contentedly. Turning the cutter over on one side, as a wind-break, he scraped the snow away and soon had a good fire of dead branches.

After eating some “parched” corn and “jerked” beef, he wrapped himself up in the fur robe and went to sleep, using the seat cushion for a pillow. When resuming the trail the next morning he was very much surprised, and somewhat chagrined, to find that had he gone only about half a mile farther over the top of a big sand dune, he could have spent the night much more comfortably at a small tavern.

Once in Chicago, where to stay?

After he crossed the state line, near Lake Calumet, he passed several sod houses as he followed the road, then more distinct, to Chicago, at that time a trading post of less than 5,000 inhabitants. Reaching his destination late in the afternoon he was directed to the “Bull’s Head Tavern”, which stood on the present site of The Washingtonian Home, corner of Madison Street and Ogden Avenue, opposite a large open space which was subsequently Union Park. On this open square were hundreds of tents, rude shacks and covered wagons occupied by the incoming settlers.

The hotel was in those days a very pretentious hostelry capable of accommodating from 75 to 100 guests, quite an improvement on the first hotel in Chicago before the Black Hawk War, known as the “Sauganash Hotel”, on the southeast corner of Lake and Market streets, built and run by a French man named Mark Beaubien. Beaubien used to “sleep” 15 or 20 men with two or three blankets, it was said. After he had collected for the night’s lodging he would give them a blanket to wrap themselves up in on the floor, and when they had gotten asleep, gently roll them over and pull the blanket out for the next “guest.”

Mr. Beaubien used to exclaim, with great unction; “Yes, by gar, I keep a hotel like Hell”.

Senator Glowiak hosts first Elmhurst Town Hall State Senator Suzy Glowiak recently hosted her first town hall meeting in Elmhurst, which allowed people to voice their opinions and give input on vital issues impacting the 24th State Senate District.

Nearly 60 local residents attended the open meeting to discuss budget concerns, adult use cannabis and other hot button issues debated in Springfield this legislative session.

“This legislative session was full of lively discussions and emotionally charged issues,” Glowiak said.

“It’s imperative that I hear feedback from local residents on their priorities and concerns. I want Town Hall Tuesdays to give us an opportunity to collaborate and discuss ways we can move our communities forward to ensure our schools are well-funded and safe, small businesses prosper and we see an end to rising property tax bills.”

Glowiak will host three more Town Hall Tuesdays July 2 at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center (535 Duane St., Glen Ellyn) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and July 9 at the Hinsdale Library (20 East Maple St., Hinsdale) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Battery June 12 Audrey Davis, 25, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer near Roosevelt and York at around 6:07 p.m. Police said Davis became combative after being told her vehicle needed to be towed and she subsequently kicked an officer.

Criminal damage June 12 A victim in the 100 block of S. Poplar told police at around 9:14 a.m. that an unknown suspect broke out his rear passenger side window on his vehicle. The victim believes someone threw a rock at the window.

June 9-June 10 Police said the owner of a restaurant in the 300 block of W. Lake reports at around 7:32 a.m. that an unknown suspect broke a window on the building sometime overnight. A rock was thrown through a 1’ x 5’ double pane window. No entry was gained.

Police said an agent for a church in the 100 block of E. Third reports that an unknown suspect damaged the key card entry door lock at the east entrance to the building. The card reader was torn from the building and the electrical wires were cut. The reader was found lying on the ground. No entry was attempted.

June 5-June 6 A City of Elmhurst employee reports than an unknown suspect damaged the metal support for the Salt Creek water level sensor in the 600 block of Sunnyside/Maple Trail Woods sometime between the above dates. The metal supporting rod was bent in a downward position resulting in an inaccurate water level measurement.

Disorderly conduct June 9 Forrest Kirchner, 20, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct/befouling public property at Wilder Park at around 6:22 p.m. Police said Kirchner was observed standing next to a tree and urinating on the ground.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disturbance June 13 Police said officers responded to the report of a physical domestic in the 1200 block of S. Prospect at around 11:41 p.m. Upon arrival both subjects were found to be intoxicated.

The suspect stated they had a verbal argument and he then went outside. He stated he never hit or touched the victim. The victim stated they had a verbal argument and the suspect allegedly slapped her. There were no signs of

injury to the victim and the victim did not wish to pursue charges. The victim left for the night.

Andre Kamber, 24, of Elgin, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near I-290 and St. Charles at around 2:13 a.m.

Marketa McCoy, 36, of Woodridge, was charged with illegal transportation of alcohol, driving while license suspended and driving while using an electronic communications device subsequent to a traffic stop in the 600 block of W. St. Charles at around 11:45 p.m.

June 7 Cara Krull, 23, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage subsequent to a vehicle crash near North and Maple at around 4:57 p.m.

Erica M. Martinez, 23, of Bensenville, was charged with illegal transportation of alcohol, speeding, driving while license suspended and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and County Line at around 10:36 p.m.

Police said Martinez also was found to have a valid warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

Excessive speeding June 6 Antonio Vasquez, 47, of Lansing, was charged with speeding 40 mph over the limit (93 mph in a 50 mph zone) near Route 83 and I-290 at around 11:01 a.m.

Obstructing June 10 Police said that subsequent to a check on well-being, Cinque Grant, 29, of Bensenville, was located in the 135 Addison Parking Deck.

Grant provided false information to officers regarding his identification, according to police, and charged with obstructing identification.

June 11 Police said officers responded to the 800 block of S. Parkside at around 8:26 p.m. for the report of a suspicious person. The reporting officer spoke to the complainant who stated she observed an unknown person looking into the windows of her residence. The complainant stated she then saw a blue minivan leave the area northbound on Parkside. The case is pending investigation.

June 12 Yaritza Patino, 24, of Maywood, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and a tinted windows violation subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at around 5:49 p.m.

June 6 A complainant told police at around 12:07 p.m. that a suspicious text message came across a group message on her daughter’s cell phone. The suspect came to the police station and admitted to sending the text message, but stated he was joking around.

June 10 Hector Villerreal, 25, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Roosevelt at around 11:53 p.m.

June 12 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 200 block of N. Michigan at around 12:41 p.m. A complaint told police that while he and another employee were in a back yard working, two unknown males entered their enclosed trailer and removed one Echo Blower and two Echo Trimmers. The suspects fled eastbound North Avenue in a gray four-door car.

The complainant, an employee with UPS, related at around 2 p.m. that the victim came into the store in the 200 block of E. Butterfield and attempted to send cash to an address in New York. The complainant believed this was a scam and spoke with the victim who related her grandson contacted her and needed money to be bonded out of jail. The victim also related she sent cash via U.S. mail at her local post office on June 10. The victim was given her cash back and was informed to make a report with the Hillside Police Department with regard to the money sent on June 10.

A complainant told police at around 2:24 p.m. that they discovered the Park District’s Safety Town had been vandalized and a yellow tricycle was taken. The complainant discovered writing on the property and also discovered a damaged sprinkler.

Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of W. Adelaide at around 2:53 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown subject used the complainant’s bankcard to withdraw currency from his bank account.

June 4-June 12 Attempted forgery was reported at a business in the 300 block of W. Lake sometime between the above dates. A complainant was notified by the bank that there were attempts to cash two altered checks. The checks were not successfully cashed and the complainant was notified of the matter. The complainant believes the checks were stolen from the mail.

June 11 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of Dorchester at around 12:44 p.m. A reporting officer spoke to the complainant who stated that she had been advised by her bank that her card was used without her permission at a local store. Upon further investigation, the complainant discovered she was missing her wallet.

Forgery was reported at a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 9:34 a.m. Police said an unknown suspect purchased $19.96 worth of items using a counterfeit $100 bill.

The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 25 years old, around 5’9”, 160 pounds, wearing an orange baseball cap, an orange sleeveless shirt with a construction vest, camouflage pants and white gym shoes.

Theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 10:44 a.m. A victim told police she left her purse under a self-checkout register. When the victim returned, the purse was gone. A friend of the victim sent a text to the victim’s phone asking for it to be returned.

Recently, Jacob Grant took a moment to talk with Elmhurst Public Library about his books and weigh in on creativity, the topic of EPL’s Common Connection summer programming: EPL: When did you realize you wanted to be a writer/illustrator?

JG: Going back to the days I studied graphic design and illustration in art school, I remember thinking about what a dream job it would be to make art for children’s books. But, at the time I had never met anyone who had done such a thing. It seemed impossible. After five years of working professionally as a graphic designer, rarely making art, I found inspiration while book

Of course, it would take another several years of getting my skills up to snuff, to finally attempt writing and illustrating a picture book – and some years after that to finally have one published!

EPL: When did you write your first book and how old were you?

JG: I’m fortunate enough to have a couple books from first grade that my parents stowed away in storage.

One about a pet seal that could live in my Grandparent’s swimming pool, and another about a sandwich so big it had to be assembled with trucks and cranes.

EPL: How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

JG: Up to now, I’ve written six published picture books, illustrated one, and have three more coming out over the next couple years. My favorite? It’s like choosing your favorite child!

Though, I’m especially partial to Through With The Zoo. I worked on the book throughout the year I spent at home with our first baby.

Conroy advocates for clean needle exchanges To combat one of the many harmful consequences of the opioid epidemic, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, recently passed legislation to expand safe needle exchange programs to prevent the transmission of diseases from intravenous drug usage.

“Addiction and the drastic rise in the use of opioids must be addressed comprehensively including ensuring that public health measures are in place to protect users and the greater public,” Conroy said. “Through education and increasing access to clean needles, we can help those suffering from addiction use in a safe manner and begin to form the necessary connections to ultimately get them the help they need.”

The spread of transmittable diseases has increased due to unsafe needle usage with the rise of the opioid epidemic. Needle exchange programs have proven to be an ef-

fective tool to reduce the spread of blood-borne illnesses.

Senate Bill 1828 creates the Needle and Hypodermic Syringe Access Program to encourage the establishment of needle exchange programs across the state. Conroy’s bill aims to reduce the spread of diseases such as HIV and hepatitis, reduce the occurrence of needle stick injuries from the improper discarding of contaminated needles, and to build connections between users and treatment facilities.

“The pervasive rise in the use of opioids must be addressed as a serious public health epidemic.

The establishment of trust is critical to combating it,” Conroy said.

“Through the expansion of needle exchange programs, we are letting users know that our community cares about their wellbeing and we will not turn them away when they need us the most.”

Sen. Cullerton book club urges summer reading State Sen. Tom Cullerton is kicking off his Summer Reading Book Club for children who live in the 23rd State Senate District.

Cullerton believes summer reading helps encourage children to develop a lifelong interest in books, maintain their reading skills during the summer months and keep their minds sharp.

“Reading through the summer months helps children stay engaged,” Cullerton said. “Our district is fortunate to have amazing community libraries. This summer reading book club will help urge our young people to take the time to visit our libraries.

Life is made up of moments.

Some big. Some not so big. Some seemingly small that just may turn big.

And despite the big or not so big, some are moments that will affect you for years to come or perhaps your entire life.

They can be obviously monumental moments – a marriage, divorce, birth of a child ­– moments where the stature of the moment is as big as the moment itself.

But it doesn’t always unfold this way.

Looking back, my life has been just as defined by the seemingly inconsequential moments I didn’t see coming as the enormous ones I did.

Deciding on a whim to take a summer school driver’s training class and meeting a cute skinny guy who I’d later fall in love with and marry.

Leaving a career for family and as a result developing a new writing career where I was able to stay at home with my children.

Making a last minute decision to visit old friends at a lake that we’d never heard of turned from mundane to monumental when we discovered a Charlie Brown Christmas tree of a cabin for sale on that lake and decided to give a lowball offer, which happened to be accepted. In the years since we’ve rallied up too many wonderful family memories to count.

Perfectionism kicked in, and the ironing board came out.

I am already researching the best non-wrinkle pillowcases and sheets, so the hospitality bug has bitten.

Perhaps in the olden days folks ironed their sheets but that will not be me. A pillowcase is easy. Large things, no thanks. I enjoy cleaning and organizing and hosting, but ironing, still not high up there.

Having the ironing board out was a good thing though. I ironed a lightweight denim summer dress

that I would have worn several times already this season but was too lazy to iron. Now it’s ready to go.

I give thanks to Ruth R. Benerito. She invented what we now call “wash-and-wear” cotton fabrics. Ruth found a way, while working at the U.S. Department of Agriculture lab in the 1950s, to treat the surface of cotton that led to wrinkle-resistant fabric. The invention was said to have “saved the cotton industry” and save people lots of time ironing. And I love that a woman had such a cool job in the 50s.

The ironing board is still out. I will find every wrinkled item in the house and take care of it while, literally, the iron is hot. Who knows when the urge will strike again!

As part of its Opioid Task Force initiative, EdwardElmhurst Health is launching a new Medication Take-Back program to provide accessible, safe places for the public to dispose of dangerous medication.

Safe medication disposal kiosks have been installed in the vestibule of door 28 near the Emergency Department (just to the right of the main ED entrance) at Elmhurst Hospital, 155 E. Brush Hill Rd., and near the South Lobby (in the walkway between the South parking garage and South Lobby off of Osler Dr.) of Edward Hospital, 801 S. Washington St., Naperville, and Both are accessible to the public 24/7 365 days a year. The program is partially funded by the Edward and

Elmhurst Medical Executive Committees.

“We want to help our community protect their families and friends by providing an accessible, friendly and safe place to dispose of dangerous

medications,” says Dr. Daniel Sullivan, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Elmhurst Hospital. “We’re also protecting the environment by reducing drug residue in water tables. Studies show that 46 million Americans in 24 major metropolitan areas have pharmaceutical chemicals and hormones in their drinking water.”

Simply bring your unwanted, unused or expired controlled medications to one of the locations and drop them in the kiosk – just like putting a letter in a mailbox.

Accepted items: unused or expired controlled medications.

Restricted Items: needles/ syringes, liquids, aerosols, inhalers, thermometers, illegal drugs.

The Edward and Elmhurst pharmacies will monitor the kiosks, collect and seal the unwanted medication and arrange pick-up of the drugs on a regular basis.

I just did something I don’t believe I’ve ever done before in my entire life – I ironed pillowcases.

Ironing is not my favorite domestic chore, so I only do it when absolutely necessary. My wardrobe has morphed into less and less items that need an iron. I prefer my steamer, but today I was possessed by housemaid pasts (if I did have a past life, it would be more Lady Mary than a housemaid) and I pressed a pile of pillowcases.

Of all the textiles to iron, certainly pillowcases rank in the top two, with hankies being number one.

Yes, I am old enough to have ironed handkerchiefs when I was a little girl. I wonder if my dad still carries one in his pocket. Anyway, my ironing board gets little action so today was a banner day.

U.S. Chamber fights to uphold AHP rule for small businesses The Governmental Affairs Committee of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry is sharing the following information about the United States Chamber of Commerce’s Amicus Brief filing (which ECCI signed onto) to uphold the U.S. Department of Labor’s new Association Healthcare Plane (AHP) guidelines over a U.S. District Court ruling.

One of the most challenging tasks for small business owners is navigating the complexity of health insurance options to offer employees. In fact, our most recent small business survey confirmed that this issue remains a penultimate problem. From considering premiums and deductibles to evaluating the size of provider networks, small businesses have a lot to consider.

At the end of the day, regardless of plan’s specifics, many small employers are unable to find, much less offer, affordable health care coverage.

To give small business owners more health care options for their employees, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has long supported the policy of allowing small businesses to band together to purchase coverage through Association Health Plans (AHPs), which permit small businesses to offer their employees the same type of coverage as larger companies. Just last June, the administration finalized regulations to

provide this lifeboat to small businesses drowning in the search for affordable coverage amid the failing small group market. As a result, new AHPs enabled small businesses and self-employed Americans to band together by industry or geography to purchase affordable health coverage to cover their employees.

However, a mere nine months after the regulation was finalized, the DC District Court found in favor of Attorneys General from 11 states and D.C. and declared the bulk of the regulation to be unlawful. The judge agreed with the AGs that the rule would undermine the Affordable Care Act by encouraging individuals to buy cheaper plans with fewer benefits and no consumer protections.

This is simply not true.

To defend this important policy and demonstrate the high value of these plans, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Litigation Center filed an amicus brief on June 7 in support of the AHP regulation in the Circuit Court. We were not alone in our view that AHPs are critically important for small businesses; the National Federation for Independent Business joined the amicus along with 65 state and local chambers from around the country.

For small businesses, the cost of health care coverage can be crippling, which is why so many companies are not able to offer it. The

number of small businesses offering health coverage has declined substantially over the years, from 47% in 2000 to 29% in 2016. Unlike bigger companies, who can negotiate for better premium prices, businesses on Main Street are tasked with trying to give their employees flexible insurance options that meet their health care needs while making sure costs don’t break the bank.

This issue seems to be top of mind for many small business owners. The MetLife and U.S. Chamber of Commerce Small Business Index this quarter found that 25% of owners say they do not have enough information to make informed decisions about health insurance options. Additionally, 25% of respon-

County to host Complete Count Committee meeting The DuPage County Board voted to create a DuPage Complete Count Committee on Tuesday, May 14, forming a special advisory group whose mandate is “to provide direction and advice to ensure an accurate 2020 census count of DuPage County residents.” DuPage County Board Strategic Planning Committee Chairwoman Sadia Covert will chair the Complete Count Committee and District 5 Board Member Jim Healy, the longest-serving County Board member, will

serve as Vice-Chairman. The primary function of the advisory committee will be community outreach.

The first Complete Count Committee meeting will be held at the DuPage County campus on Tuesday, June 18 from 1-4 p.m. in the auditorium of the JTK Administrative Building, 421 No. County Farm Road, Wheaton.

Representatives from the U.S. Census Bureau will provide a DuPage County training to optimize community outreach efforts.

ICGS holds spring poetry reading On Wednesday, May 8, Immaculate Conception Grade School 5th and 6th graders hosted a Spring Poetry Reading. The students wrote poems in a variety of styles about their fathers, grandfathers or special father figures in their lives.

Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 defeats Lake Station 17U and 15U Muddog teams also in action

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team picked up a recent win against Lake Station (Indiana) Post 100.

In an 11-3 victory at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst, the Elmhurst squad scored seven runs in the first inning and had nine hits in the game.

York’s Ian Steinorth had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. York’s Tim Bowbin had a run scored, an RBI and three walks. Jack Enright had a run scored and an RBI. Connor Gwaltney (Timothy Christian) had a hit, two runs scored and two RBI. Tim Beecroft (Fenton) had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Tommy Ryan (IC Catholic Prep) had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Aidan Kress had a hit, while Andrew Pietrucha had a hit and a run scored. Adam Parat had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Kress had a double and Beecroft tripled. Ryan Malek (IC Catholic Prep), Steinorth and Parat each had two stolen bases.

Dave Sykora pitched 3 1/3 innings and struck out three to earn the win.

Beecroft pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and fanned four.

Post 187 then dropped an 8-7 decision to Elgin Post 57 at Wing Park in Elgin. Elgin scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.

Elmhurst had nine hits in the game and rallied from a 7-0 deficit after three innings to tie the contest.

Steinorth had a hit and two runs scored. Ryan had two hits. Bowbin had a hit, a run scored and three RBI. Beecroft had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Malek had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Jack Enright had three hits and a run scored. Ryan, Beecroft, Bowbin and Enright each had a double. Steinorth stole two bases.

Post 187 then dropped a 4-2 game to Ottawa Post 33 in a game played at Lincoln-Douglas Park in Ottawa.

Malek had a hit and a walk, while Enright had two hits and an RBI. Bowbin had an RBI and walked twice. Jimmy O’Donnell walked three times, while Beecroft and Parat each walked twice.

Enright had a triple and Malek stole two bases.

AJ Parnell went six innings and struck out three for Elmhurst, which was 1-3 through its first four games.

15U Muddogs The Elmhurst American Legion 15U Muddogs dropped a recent 9-3 game to the Midwest Nationals at Rocky Miller Park in Evanston.

The game was tied 1-1 until Midwest scored seven runs in the fifth in-

ning. Jake Marshall had a hit and a run scored. Matthew Maziarka had a hit and an RBI. Oscar Torres had a hit and a run scored, while Will Ryan had a hit and an RBI. Torres’ and Maziarka’s hits were triples. Jace Klein had three stolen bases. Torres pitched the first 4 1/3 innings.

Post 187 then went to a 7-7 tie with All Prospect at Mundelein High School as part of the Northwestern University tournament.

Marshall went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Maziarka walked twice, scored two runs and had an RBI. Torres had two hits and an RBI. Ryan had a hit and two RBI. Post 187 walked 10 times. Marshall had a double and stole three bases. Matthew McFarland and Maziarka each had two stolen bases.

In a 10-1 loss to the Illinois Lightning at Heritage Park in Wheeling, Ryan and Riley Corbin each had a hit.

Corbin had Post 187’s only RBI. Torres scored the lone run. Ryan’s hit was a double. George O’Brien had three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of relief work.

In a 5-2 loss to Triple Play Academy at Heritage Park, Marshall, O’Brien, Maziarka and Ryan each had a hit.

Maziarka had an RBI. Ryan’s hit was a double. Marshall stole three bases, while Klein had two steals. Maziarka pitched 5 2/3 innings and struck out four.

Post 187 was 1-8-1 through its first 10 games.

17U Muddogs The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 17U Muddogs team dropped a 17-1 contest to Pirates Baseball Chicago 17U in a game played at Madison Meadows in Lombard.

The Pirates scored 10 runs in the third inning. Andrew Zwolinski, Jack Ryan and AJ Howard each had a hit.

Howard had an RBI. Julius Sanchez scored the team’s lone run and also stole two bases.

In a 6-5 loss to Windy City Prospects 18U at Madison Meadows, Post 187 scored three runs in the fifth inning but couldn’t close the gap any further.

Aldo Flores Jr. had three hits and a run scored. Zwolinski had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Jose Perez had a hit and a run scored. Ryan had a hit, a run scored and drew a walk.

Jake Galanis had two hits and an RBI. Sanchez had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Ricky Saucedo had a hit, as did Howard and Jack Klein. Elmhurst tallied 12 hits in the game.

Sanchez, Ryan and Flores Jr. each had doubles. Galanis went six innings on the mound and allowed only two earned runs and struck out three.

The Muddogs were 1-5-1 through their first seven games.

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team progressing nicely in the summer Knights recently competed at Hoops Mountain tournament

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team has been getting after it fast and furiously in the early weeks of its summer season.

In addition to playing in the Ridgewood High School summer league in Norridge, the Knights recently competed in the Hoops Mountain shootout event at Batavia.

In recent action, IC Catholic Prep defeated Chicago King and Ridgewood, and lost close games to Zion-Benton and Batavia.

“Zion-Benton was close,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “I have been really pleased with how

the kids are playing together. We have been (facing) excellent competition. We played Batavia and that was back and forth. We had a chance to tie with a last-second three and it went in and out. The kids have been playing really hard.”

Tyrrell said the Knights have switched things up a bit with its strategy. “We are a somewhat undersized team,” he said. “We’re doing some different things than we have in the past where we would possess the ball and run the clock and look for the best shot possible. Now, we’re picking up the tempo more and applying more pressure. It’s a fun type of basketball to play and it’s a fun type of basketball to coach and watch.”

Tyrrell also likes his team’s shooting prospects. “We have some good shooters,” the coach said. “Zach Jordan has been shooting the ball very

well. I’m very impressed with how he is playing. It’s exciting to watch.

Dom Gaudio has been in the post in the past and he’s doing an excellent job of hitting that open shot.”

Tyrrell added junior Michael Hilgart and sophomore John Hilgart have added to the Knights’ outside scoring threats.

The coach cited additional strong play from junior Chauncey Lee who has been up on the varsity since the playoffs of his freshman year.

“We’ve had some nice guard play from Chauncey,” said Tyrrell. “It’s rare in the tournaments we play in to see a better point guard than him.

He’s been really good at kick-outs.

He’ll kick it out to Zach and Dom for threes.”

Marrera, Roemmich named allconference for Timothy Christian baseball Senior day win against Ridgwood key highlight for Trojans

A pair of Timothy Christian baseball players were cited for strong play on the field this spring.

Senior catcher and pitcher Trent Marrera and junior Ethan Roemmich were named to the all-Metro Suburban Conference Red Division team.

Roemmich hit .353 in conference play, while Marrera was right behind him at .351. Marrera had a 3.30 ERA and logged 31 2/3 innings on the mound.

“Both of them did well for us,” said Timothy coach Brian Whartnaby.

Timothy finished the 2019 season with a 6-21 overall mark and won three MSC Red games against Guerin Prep, IC Catholic Prep and Ridgewood.

“The Ridgewood game was senior day at the end of the year and it was a game where we put it all together,” said Whartnaby.

this spring from sophomore right fielder CJ James. “CJ wasn’t all-conference, but he led the team in RBI and had our most RBI in the conference,” said Whartnaby. “He had a good year.”

Whartnaby noted Marrera’s accomplishments were even more impressive given he switched positions at the beginning of the season.

“Trent stepped up for us and played catcher,” the coach explained.

“He expected to be an infielder and a pitcher. Him and Thomas Becvar (another senior) carried the catching load after our junior catcher was injured before the season. Trent showed a lot of toughness and put in a lot of hard work to get back into it when he was not expecting to play there.”

Whartnaby was pleased with how his team turned the corner later in the season. “We had an up and down season,” he said. “We didn’t end up in the win-loss column where we wanted to, but we had a good stretch about three-quarters of the way through where we were very competitive, and then that Ridgewood game on senior day was a real highlight for us.”

Another highlight was getting a victory in the Class 3A state playoffs.

“We got our first win in Class 3A, 4-3 against the Bulls charter school and then we ran into a really good St. Pat’s team in the second game,” said Whartnaby.

Timothy graduated seven seniors from this year’s team. “We had a big group of seniors,” said Whartnaby.

“It was good to see seniors like Trent and Thomas Becvar step up. We also had some good leadership from our underclassmen. Ben Jones played at shortstop and shows a lot of promise and so does Ethan (Roemmich). We were young this year. We had three sophomores and a freshman in there at different points.”

Whartnaby likes where the team is headed. “We have a lot of work to do going into the off-season, but Ben Jones was our everyday shortstop as a sophomore and was our leadoff hitter,” he said. “He will be one of the go-to guys. Ethan plays third and the outfield and pitches. We’re also looking forward to getting Harrison Stanton back after he missed the whole year. He was a sophomore starter two years ago. We’re excited about next year.”

Maria (Cicero) Lindberg won the female title at Saturday’s Lauren M. Kiefer 5K Family Run/Walk. The 5-kilometer run began and ended outside of Willowbrook High School in Villa Park. Lindberg finished the race in 18 minutes, 30.9 seconds; she finished second among all runners in the event. Lindberg is an Elmhurst resident. She graduated from York High School in 2001. In her senior year at York, she won the IHSA Class AA individual state cross country title. She also led York to the Class AA team state title in cross country. Later in her senior year at York, Lindberg won the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter Class AA state titles at the IHSA girls state track and field meet.

Lindberg went on to a standout cross country and track career at Boston College.

Timothy Christian boys basketball team busy at Batavia Summer season in full swing for Trojans

Timothy Christian boys basketball coach Scott Plaisier was happy with how his team competed at the recent Hoops Mountain shootout at Batavia High School.

The Trojans dropped a close game to Metea Valley and lost to Huntley before defeating St. Laurence out of Burbank by a 105-89 count.

“It was a big-time shootout,” said Plaisier. “There was a lot of up and down.”

ra and lost by two points to Chicago Bogan at Batavia.

“The boys competed fairly well,” said Plaisier. “We’re also playing in the Riverside-Brookfield summer league and we have a couple wins there. They are battling every night.

The team we had as sophomores last year are now going into their junior year and are filling in spaces and positions. Overall so far, the summer has been good for us. We’re out there continuing to grow and get better.”

One area of key improvement thus far for the Trojans has been on the glass. “I like how we are starting to understand defensively the importance to have the ability to rebound

as a team,” said Plaisier. “We have to do that as a group and they are starting to figure that out a little bit.”

Rebounding isn’t the only thing Plaisier has been pleased about thus far. “I like our pace of play and I like how we are shooting the ball,” he said.

“We continue to get better. We’re definitely moving the ball and shooting better. We’re trending in the right direction and that will be good for us.”

Matt Owens and Jack Baldridge, two returnees from last year’s squad, have stood out in the summer thus far. “Matt Owens is playing really good basketball and we’re see-

ing really good things out of Jack Baldridge,” said Plaisier.

AJ Vos also was off to a strong start in the summer, but he is currently sidelined with an injury. “AJ was playing very well. He was not with us at Hoops Mountain and will miss the rest of the summer,” said Plaisier. “We look forward to having him back for the season.”

Additionally, Ben Jones has provided another spark for the Trojans.

“Ben Jones has come in and given us some good minutes,” said Plaisier.

“He’s done a very good job. We have a lot of guys playing really well.”

ule remaining. In addition to continuing play in the Riverside-Brookfield league, the Trojans will head to a shootout this weekend at Willowbrook where they will play four games before competing in a large shootout at Ridgewood featuring 72 teams.

“It’s an NCAA live period shootout where 72 teams are signed up,” he said. “We’re going to be one of the host sites. So, we’ll have those two shootouts and our games at R-B and that will be the end of the summer. I’d like to see us end the summer strong. We have things going in the right direction, which is great to see.”

ATU NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MEDAL WINNERS

Master J.H. Park, owner of Park’s Champion Taekwondo, Elmhurst, is very proud and honored to announce the results from the recent ATU National Championship Tournament held in Schaumburg at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center, IL on May 25-26. Park’s Champion Taekwondo Students took home medals and trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in Sparring, Form and Breaking. The Tournament boasted over 700 participants from all over the United States.

It was an unforgettable experience for many students since it is their first national tournament in such an intense major setting.

Master Park said “our students have competed in many local tournaments in the past but this is the first major national tournament for them. I am very proud of all my students and it is an honor for the school.

These students stayed focused and worked very hard for this tournament, and their hard work paid off. They all did an incredible job at the competition as exemplified by the medals and honors they brought home. It was an experience of a life time.”

The students from Park’s Champion Taekwondo that participated in the tournament ranged from Intermediate Belt Level to Black Belt of different ages. The youngest black belt is 8 year old Parker Woitel.

Most students have studied Taekwondo for at least 2 plus years. They are: 1) Jenna Corona (Northlake Middle School) 5) Amirah Favela (Timothy Christian 2) James Brewton (Field Elementary School) School) 3) Sydney Woitel (Immaculate Conception Catholic Grade School) 6) Robert Rodriguez (York High School) 4) Parker Woitel (Immaculate Conception Catholic Grade School) 7) Kenedi Gomez (York High School Between these students, they brought home 2 Golds for Form, 3 Golds for Breaking, and for Sparring 3 Golds, 2 Silvers and 1 Bronze.

Master Parks Champion Taekwondo specializes in working with children. Classes are divided by age and skill to provide teaching that best matches each student’s need. All children are taught at their own pace to develop their present capabilities in order to bring out their maximum potential.

Due to hectic schedules, many parents look for activities that allow the entire family to spend time with one another.
