City announces unexpected passing of Police Chief Michael R. Ruth

The City of Elmhurst announces the passing of honorable Police Chief, Michael R. Ruth. Chief Ruth passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 30, surrounded by family members, while in a hospital recovering from a medical procedure.

Chief Ruth was a dedicated police professional who served 44 years in law enforcement. He began as a dispatcher in Alsip and a patrolman in Hometown before joining the Skokie

Police Department in 1981, where he served in many roles, rising to the rank of Commander in 2010. Chief Ruth was selected as Chief of Police for the Village of Countryside, where he served from 2010 to 2012.

After a rainy month of May caused the cancellation of a scheduled Callaway Fitting Day and limited play during its Family Golf Night, White Pines Golf Club announces its June special event schedule, which includes new dates for each of those events.

The golf club will host a Callaway Fitting Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Addison Trail student charged with alleged threat against school personnel On Friday, May 20, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Addison Director of Police Timothy Hayden announced that an 18-yearold male Addison Trail High School student has been charged with posting a threatening message on Instagram directed at school personnel.

Michael Gamboa, 18, of the 2N100 block of Vista Avenue, Lombard, appeared at a bond hearing this morning where Judge Demetrios Panoushis set bond at $5,000 with 10% to apply. He has been charged with one count of False Report of a Threat to a School Building or Person, a Class 4 Felony.

Additionally, Michael Gamboa’s father, Jesus, 54, of the same address, has been charged with one count of Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon, a Class 4 Felony. The senior Gamboa appeared at a bond hearing this morning where Judge John Kinsella set a $25,000 personal

recognizance bond.

It is alleged that on Thursday, May 19, a photo was discovered on Instagram by students at Addison Trail High School depicting a male holding a black gun with a threatening caption. A student immediately reported the post to a teacher who notified the school principal at which time the principal issued a lockdown at the school.

Following an investigation into the post conducted by the Addison Police Department, it is alleged that Michael Gamboa, a senior at Addison Trail High School, is the owner of the Instagram account. It is alleged that while neither Gamboa nor any other student at Addison Trail High School is the individual in the photo, Gamboa posted the photo earlier that day. While executing a search warrant at Gamboa’s home, authorities found a 9mm pistol in the parents’ bedroom. It is alleged that the weap-

“First and foremost, I thank the students who brought this matter to the attention of school authorities,” Berlin said. “As I have said in the past, but it bears repeating, any threat to the well-being of our students, teachers and school personnel will be taken very seriously. School threats are no joking matter and can cause fear and anxiety not just for

students, teachers and staff, but also for parents, siblings and the entire community. Anyone suspected of making a threat will be fully investigated and appropriately charged.

I thank authorities at Addison Trail High School for their cooperation in this matter as well as the Addison Police Department.”

“Whether it was done as a joke or with malicious intent, school threats of violence are unacceptable,” Hayden said. “It is incredibly destructive to the school environment,

and we will aggressively hold those accountable for their actions.”

Michael Gamboa’s next court hearing is scheduled for Monday, June 13, for arraignment in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.

Jesus Gamboa’s next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, June 24, for arraignment in front of Judge Kinsella.

Former legal secretary gets five years for stealing from law firm, posing as attorney

Addison police made arrest in 2017

On Tuesday, May 24, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced that a former legal secretary for a DuPage County law firm had been sentenced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for stealing nearly $100,000 from the firm. Aracelia Dominguez, 42, of the 4500 block of W. Lawrence, Chicago, appeared at her sentencing hearing late last week where Judge Margaret O’Connell handed down the sentence.

On Oct. 1, 2020, Dominguez entered a guilty plea to one count of Theft by Deception, a Class 2 Felony.

The sentence stems from allegations that beginning in February 2013, Dominguez, at times presenting herself as an attorney, met with potential clients of her employer without her employer’s knowledge and accepted payments, primarily in cash, for immigration legal work that she was not authorized to perform. In addition to the cash payments, Dominguez forged multiple checks she received from clients, endorsed the checks to herself and deposited the checks into her personal bank accounts. Dominguez was fired from the firm in December

2016 at which time the firm’s owner noticed discrepancies in the firm’s finances and contacted the Addison Police Department.

On Oct. 3, 2017, following an investigation in the matter, an $80,000 arrest warrant was issued for Dominguez. In February 2018, Dominguez was taken into custody in Cook County. On Feb. 20, 2018, after her bond was reduced to $40,000 with 10% to apply, Dominguez posted the necessary $4,000, and was released from custody.

“Ms. Dominguez was trusted by her employer,” Berlin said. “She repaid that trust however, by stealing nearly $100,000 from the very people who put food on her table and clothes on her back. Thankfully, Ms. Dominguez’s scheme was [discovered] and she will now be held responsible for her reprehensible actions. I thank the Addison Police Department … for their efforts in holding this defendant responsible for her actions.”

Dominguez will begin serving her sentence on Monday, July 11 and will be required to serve 50% of her sentence before being eligible for parole. She was also ordered to pay restitution to her former employer.

May 4 A victim in the 600 block of N. York reports an unknown suspect placed an Apple AirTag on her vehicle while she was at a coffee shop.

An investigation is pending.

Assault, battery May 19 Police said officers responded to the 300 block of E. Butterfield at 5:39 p.m. for the report of a fight in progress. The reporting officer met with the complainant who reported a confrontation between him and another parent turned physical when the parent pushed him twice in the chest. The reporting officer located the other party involved who stated the complainant aggressively advanced at her.

No arrests were made due to conflicting statements from both parties.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass May 24 A reporting officer found a discharged fire extinguisher on the sixth floor of the Addison parking garage at 9:11 p.m. The case also had a broken cover. Public works was notified for a replacement.

May 20 Police said a fire extinguisher box was found damaged and the fire extinguisher missing from the seventh floor of the Addison parking deck in the 100 block of N. Addison at 7:20 p.m.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance, dispute May 23 A complainant in the 400 block of N. West came into the police station to file a delayed verbal domestic dispute. The complainant told police while picking up her kids from school, her ex-husband was there and began recording her and making a scene. Both parties left without further incident.

May 19 A 40-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 300 block of N. Shady at 10:13 p.m. A victim reported the suspect intentionally spit at her twice and has been very aggressive towards her and her children.

Lopez Cruz was additionally cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor, while Lopez Carrillo was additionally cited for possession of open alcohol in a public place.

May 19 Carlos Garcia, 18, of Bensenville, was charged with DUI, no insurance, unlawful possession of cannabis in a vehicle, no valid driver’s license, speeding, transportation of open alcohol in a vehicle and consumption of alcohol by minor subsequent to a traffic stop in the 800 block of N. York at 1:17 a.m.

Fleeing, eluding May 26 While on patrol near Lake and I-290 at 1:53 a.m., the reporting officer observed a suspicious vehicle at a hotel. The offending vehicle fled upon seeing officers. The vehicle was last seen eastbound I-290 at North Avenue. An ISPERN message was broadcasted.

Possession of a controlled substance May 25 Bonnie Shafer, 35, of Elizabeth, Ill., was charged with with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with suspended registration subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and York at 9:26 p.m. Police said Shafer also was found to have a warrant out of Addison.

May 20 Jerry Huffman, 48, of Hammond, Ind., was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended and improper lighting subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Route 83 at 1:36 a.m.

Theft of catalytic converters

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported four incidents of catalytic converters being removed and stolen from vehicles at the following locations: a hotel in the 400 block of W. Lake sometime between May 22 and May 23; the 900 block of N. Oaklawn sometime between May 22 and May 23; the 300 block of W. Lake at 12:35 p.m. May 23; and the 400 block of W. Lake at 8:39 a.m. May 24.

May 24 Fraud was reported in the 300 block of E. South at 7:49 p.m. A victim told police she received an email from unknown suspect(s) posing as the principal of Edison Elementary School asking her to purchase gift cards for teacher appreciation week. The victim complied and forwarded the gift card information over to the suspect.

May 22 Theft by deception was reported in the 200 block of N. Glade at 12:19 p.m. A victim told police he was contacted via telephone by an unknown suspect identifying himself as an Amazon employee. The suspect convinced the victim to transfer money via Zelle and to buy three gift cards. The victim was able to stop the transfer through Zelle; however, the three gift cards had already been used.

Glenbard North High School student charged with alleged threat against school

March 23-May 20 Burglary was reported in the 200 block of W. Lake. Police said the victims went to their storage facility and when they opened the locked units they noticed several items were missing.

May 19 Corre Plater, 32, of Houston, was charged with burglary to a vehicle and possession of burglary tools, while Charley Curry, 29, of Houston, was found to have an extradition warrant out of Texas and was charged with being a fugitive from justice in the 100 block of N. York at 10:40 a.m. Police said a victim discovered a broken window on his vehicle and cash was taken from the center console.

Retail theft was reported at a food store in the 900 block of S. York at 9:45 p.m. A complainant reported he observed an unknown suspect described as a black male placing over the counter allergy medication into a gift bag. The unknown suspect then left the store without paying for the merchandise. Officers checked the area but were met with no results. |This case is pending investigation.

Theft was reported at a business in the 600 block of W. Grand at 12:38 p.m. A complainant reported a trailer belonging to his business was taken while being stored at the above location.

May 16 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported one incident of identity theft in which a victim’s personal information was used to fraudulently file for unemployment benefits.

On Friday, May 27, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Carol Stream Chief of Police William Holmer announced that a 15-year-old male Glenbard North High School student had been charged with one count of disorderly conduct (Class 4 felony) for allegedly drawing threatening images on a school test.

The juvenile appeared at a detention hearing where Judge Anthony Coco ordered that he be released to the custody of his parents on home detention. His next court appearance was scheduled Friday, June 3 in front of Judge Coco.

It is alleged that on Friday, May 20, a teacher at the school received a test back from the juvenile with images drawn on them including a stick figure with an apparent handgun to his head stating, “I love summer school” and a stick figure with a rifle outside a building labeled “summer skol” with an arrow saying “happy :( not dead.” The teacher reported the incident to authorities at the school who contacted the Carol Stream Police Department.

“As I have said before, school safety remains a top priority of my administration and we will continue to work in partnership with school personnel in identifying students who are in need of services in order to prevent any future acts of violence,” Berlin said. “No matter how harmless a student may view their actions to be, the fact remains that any threat involving a juvenile must be fully investigated by law enforcement and where appropriate, will be handed over to the juvenile justice system.”

First Church of Christ Scientist begins to come down

In June of 2021, the Independent reported that the First Church of Christ Scientist at 271 S. Prospect Ave. was up for sale, based on information provided by local realtor Tim Schiller of @properties-The Schiller Team. At that time, Schiller was seeking a buyer or buyers who

would either want to keep the building a church, or use it as a residential property, which the area is zoned.

The church made a perfect bookend for Claremont Street and the neighbors loved its timeless beauty, standing majestically in the snow in winter.

Last week, someone reported seeing people taking the building piece

by piece, as opposed to using a wrecking ball.

“There is a big banner up for a company called Recyclean,” said neighbor Karen Pachyn. “I’m very sad to see the beautiful historic building go down, but happy to see that it is being done in what looks to be a socially responsible way.”

The Independent was able to speak with Janet Richrath at the Christian Science Reading Room in Elmhurst, who confirmed that the church had

sold on Feb. 16 to private homeowners.

“They’re going to keep it a single-family residence,” she said. “The area is zoned residential so it cannot be a multi-family building, like apartments.”

Parishioners would have liked another church to move in and, while several took an interest, there are things about the property that Richrath said made it too expensive for another congregation to take on.

Built in 1941, the building would have been costly just to bring it up to code and then sprinklers would have to be installed as well.

The electronic digital organ used by the congregation was purchased by the Yorkfield Presbyterian Church in Elmhurst. Parishioners who owned the grand piano donated it to the church when they moved to Florida. The piano eventually found a home with the Petite Opera Company in Park Ridge.

Monkeypox -- What is it and should we be worried?

As if coronavirus hasn’t been enough, a new virus – monkeypox – is making its presence felt overseas and this rare virus has recently shown up in the United States.

Monkeypox, a virus that’s like smallpox but milder, doesn’t usually infect anyone in the U.S. However, in May, a Massachusetts resident tested positive for monkeypox after a trip to Canada. Infections were also reported in Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom in May. The monkeypox name came from its discovery in 1958, when colonies of research monkeys developed a pox-like illness. The first human case of monkeypox was reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970.

Subsequent human cases have been reported since, mainly in Africa.

Monkeypox symptoms include: • Fever • Headache • Muscle aches • Swollen lymph nodes • Chills

• Exhaustion • Sore throat Within one to three days after the fever begins, people will develop a rash. It can take 14 days for the body to clear the monkeypox infection.

The virus mainly spreads through contact with infected animals but can also spread through contact with infected body fluids, monkeypox sores, or items such as clothing or bedding that have been contaminated with fluids or sores of a person or animal with monkeypox.

Monkeypox virus can also spread through respiratory droplets, but in a close setting, such as the same household or a healthcare setting.

There is some good news, however: monkeypox is rare, it’s not a new virus and is well understood by infectious disease experts.

“Monkeypox has not been known to transmit well from person to person,” said Jonathan Pinsky, M.D., medical director of infection control at Edward Hospital. “Most infections are linked to exposures with infected

Testimony of a soldier…

‘Atomic Annie’ was one big gun!

Editor’s note: In its March 31 issue, the Elmhurst Independent published the obituary of Donald E. Bennett, a veteran of the U.S. Army who served during the Korean War. His family shared the following story, which readers of the Independent may enjoy in honor of Memorial Day 2022.

Not many people can say that they’ve been within three miles of a nuclear blast, but Donald Bennett was one of them. Born in southeastern Missouri in 1931, Don was the son of a farming family, Unfortunately, both of his parents died when he was young.

He moved to Elmhurst to live with an older half-brother. During high school, Don worked part-time in construction jobs, mostly plastering.

After graduation from York High School in 1950, he worked full time in construction, pouring concrete and other tasks before he was drafted into the Army in 1952.

Don went to Camp Chaffee in Arkansas for basic training, after which many of his friends were sent directly to Korea. Don was assigned to Advanced Artillery School at Fort Sill, Okla. While there, he was trained on a number of different artillery pieces including the 105mm and 155mm howitzers. During the Korean War, soldiers from the South Korean Army came to Fort Sill to be trained on these weapons along with our soldiers.

While most of the weapons Don trained on would have been familiar to many veterans of both WWII and the Korean War, there was one weapon that was very unusual: the M65, which was a 240mm atomic cannon nicknamed “Atomic Annie.”

It was the first American artillery piece capable of firing a nuclear device; it was 84 feet long and weighted 83 tons! Because of its large size and weight, it would sink if it was left on the road. It had to be moved with two “prime movers,” which were special tractors designed to move artillery. Don’s role was to drive one of these prime movers.

While still stationed at Fort Sill, Don and his team were ordered to go to an Army site called Camp Desert Rock, not far from Las Vegas in the Nevada desert. He remembers that on May 25, 1953, they were sent to a nuclear test site called Frenchman Flat for a test of “Atomic Annie.”

trench and told to close their eyes and to cover their faces with their forearms. After the atomic artillery fired its weapon, the shell landed and detonated about three miles from where Don and his fellow servicemen were huddled in the trench. Even though they had their eyes closed and forearms over them, Don said the blast was so bright, you could see it right through your arm When the dust settled, a soldier in a protective suit got out of the trench with a Geiger counter. After performing some measurements, he declared that everything was safe. Don and his fellow soldiers were ordered to ground zero, where they walked around, picking up some rocks and dusting them off.

Then they climbed into trucks to go back to their base. The entire time they were doing this, they had no protective gear and were breathing the dust-filled air that was presumably contaminated with radioactive materials. He’s still not sure what the point of going to ground zero was, but that’s what his orders were, so that’s what he did. This was the first and only time that a nuclear weapon was detonated after being fired from a cannon. Although they were only in Nevada for three weeks, Don and his buddies did manage to visit Las Vegas, which he really enjoyed.

By the time Don got back to Fort Sill, his enlistment time was almost up and the Korean War had ended in July of 1953. Don joked that the North Koreans heard he was coming over, so they stopped the war! Don had been promoted to an acting Sergeant and he was encouraged to re-enlist. Had he done so, he would

The exhibition includes an installation by Chicago architect Alicia Ponce about how her architectural structures emulate patterns, forms, and processes found in nature. Two additional exhibitions at the museum will complement the nationally traveling show: a solo show by Chicago painter Raúl Ortiz within the Museum’s historic McCormick House and approximately 35 local artists will participate in the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild Summer Members Show.

The Museum has also announced exhibition-related programming for all ages including STEAM-focused family programs plus architecture and gallery tours to reveal how art, design, and environmental science can lead to extraordinary inventions that improve lives. Children under 18 may visit free, as always, and tickets are available at elmhurstartmuseum.org.

Nature’s Blueprints features a dozen sensory stations that use

sound, touch, and interactive games to make connections between nature, art and design such as: how burrs from a forest formed velcro, the shape of a beetle’s teeth helped an inventor create a more efficient chainsaw, bird and bat wing shapes aided the early flight tests, spiderwebs inspired suspension bridges, and more.

About Ponce’s contribution Curated especially for this venue of Nature’s Blueprints are process-related drawings and photos by award-winning Chicago architect Alicia Ponce, founder and principal of APMonarch, and author of Latinas in Architecture: Stories of raising the 1% one Latina at a time.

The installation illustrates Ponce’s sustainable building practices and techniques of biomimicry in her designs.

While a fan of modernist design and architecture, Ortiz’s paintings do not prescribe to the “less is more” philosophy credited to Mies van der Rohe. With a penchant for color and contrast, Ortiz draws inspiration from botanical forms in nature and his finished paintings reflect a collage-like process of overlapping layering, obliterating, and refinement of images with decidedly contemporary color choices.

Nature’s Blueprints is sponsored by the Explore Elmhurst grant program. The traveling exhibition is a program of ExhibitsUSA, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance and the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition first debuted in September 2021 at Putnam Museum and Science Center, a Smithsonian Affiliate.

Go around this world, identify businesses that are a good fit with Illinois and put them in areas where we need them.”

Irvin spoke in favor of business incentives and getting rid of a sales tax on motor fuel, which is levied on top of the motor fuel tax. His campaign later walked back the statement, saying he supports “capping” the sales tax on fuel.

“I will never agree to raising taxes, … but what I will do is work to cut waste, cut duplication of services and grow our economy,” Irvin said, without going into specifics.

Schimpf said he would look to end that “predatory” taxation of sales tax on fuel and would insist on a balanced budget and transparency.

On pensions Most of the candidates, including Irvin, Rabine and Sullivan, said their solution to addressing Illinois’ $130 billion in unfunded pension liabilities would be a 401K style plan for new employees.

When asked by the moderator, Schimpf said he was against pulling a constitutional protection clause for pensions from the Illinois Constitution, a move which requires no official action from the governor.

Regan attended the 2022 Broadway in Chicago Awards alongside Best Actor nominee Owen Espinosa, a York senior. Owen and Regan traveled to Chicago with the other 22 nominees from across Illinois to participate in a Broadway workshop hosted by the cast of “WICKED”.

Owen graduated York High School as the Class of 2022 and will attend Ball State University to study Musical

Theatre in the fall.

As the Best Actress winner, Regan will now go on an all-expense paid trip to New York City to represent the State of Illinois at The Jimmy Awards® and participate in a week-long theatre intensive of coaching and rehearsals with industry professionals in preparation for a one-night-only showcase on Broadway, where a panel of judges crowns the nation’s top performers.

In fact, in 2003 there was an outbreak of monkeypox in the Midwest, including Illinois, that resulted from human contact with infected prairie dogs that had been sold as pets. No human-to-human transmission was reported.

Because monkeypox is so similar to smallpox, the smallpox vaccine provides effective protection against both viruses. Monkeypox, like smallpox, spreads very slowly, making vaccination an effective way to stop outbreaks, Dr. Pinsky says.

The smallpox vaccine can even prevent infection in people who receive it after exposure to an infected person.

The smallpox vaccine isn’t publicly available, as the World Health Organization declared smallpox eliminated in 1980. The United States has a supply of the vaccine in the unlikely case of an outbreak.

Dr. Pinsky says experts will likely determine the cause of the new monkeypox transmissions soon, which will help determine the public risk.

At this point, no action is needed unless someone suspects they have symptoms of monkeypox or thinks they may have been in contact with someone suspected of having monkeypox. In that case, they should contact their primary care physician’s office for guidance. Get more information at EEHealth.org.
