IHSMT names York’s ‘West Side Story’ Best Production Three performers named finalists for ‘Jimmy Awards’

On June 5, at the Broadway Playhouse, York Community High School’s “West Side Story” was named Best Production at the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards.

“It is a humbling and incredible honor for all involved,” said Rebecca Marianetti, director of the production. “In addition to our amazing actors, musicians and crew, the amount of support we have received from our team of talented and tireless faculty, administration and community has been phenomenal. To end the year with this honor is icing on the cake.

We are proud to live in a community that understands education through the arts is essential.”

Among the 24 students from the state of Illinois named finalists for the Jimmy Awards were three York students: Tatum Langley, Erik Martenson and Carina Kanzler. Appearing as Anita in West Side Story was Tatum, a 2017 York graduate, was in the final round and will earn her BFA in Musical Theatre from Ball State University. Erik, also a 2017 YCHS graduate, played the role of Tony. He will earn his BFA in Musical Theatre from Ithaca College, New York. Carina, who played the lead role of Maria, will be a senior at York next year.

Obituary: Elmhurst music faculty member Ross Kellan Ross Kellan, of Lombard, a beloved faculty member in the music department at Elmhurst College, died on June 4 after a seven-year battle with cancer. He was 68.

The director of music education and conductor of the Symphonic Band at Elmhurst, Kellan was widely admired by his students and colleagues for his generous spirit and passion for working with young people. He was “one of the most gifted teachers in our profession—completely devoted to his students and their success,” said Peter Griffin, chair of

the music department at Elmhurst. “He also was an incredibly kind and compassionate friend, mentor and colleague to all who knew him.

“The way he lived his life, both personally and professionally, inspires us to reach for excellence and challenge ourselves in ways we never thought possible. We are forever changed in the best possible ways because of him.”

Kellan joined Elmhurst College in 2005, after a 33-year teaching career at Glenbard East High School in Lombard. He has been guest conductor for the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Band, the AllCarolina Band Festival and the Eastern Illinois University Concert Band Festival. In 2011 he was inducted into Phi Beta Mu, the Band Directors Hall of Fame. In 2013 the Elmhurst

College Alumni Association presented him with the Dr. Andrew K. Prinz Faculty Merit Award.

In May of 2010, Kellan received the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching from the College.

He is survived by his wife, Jeri; his daughter, Erin; brother, Kurt; and sister, Jayne. A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, June 9, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for the Ross Kellan Memorial Scholarship Fund. A well-known face in the community is about to step aside after 44 years to enjoy her retirement. Having spent more than 40 years at the Elmhurst History Museum means Archivist Nancy Wilson has not only done a good job, but also has enjoyed her long career, which began when she was hired as Assistant to the Curator in 1973.

“I was hired when the Museum was moving from [its space in] the library located in Wilder Mansion, because the library needed all the space,” Wilson recalled in an exclusive interview with the Independent.

“At that time, City Hall was located inside Glos Mansion and since we are a department of the City, we were offered the Mansion.”

Her first duty at the museum was to pack up artifacts.

“My primary job was to oversee the museum collection and that includes artifacts, 3-D manuscripts and photographs,” Wilson said. “We have letters written home from WWI, we have maps of all kinds, we have citizenship papers from early settlers, as well as diplomas and report cards.

“A big part of the job is keeping track of where things are and a lot of paperwork is involved.”

She talked about the process of accepting a new donation at the Elmhurst History Museum.

“It’s a legal transaction when someone donates,” she said. “It takes a lot of paperwork and discussion to make sure both parties understand.

“We also have quite a process for borrowing things for traveling exhibits. We have to make sure there’s a certificate of insurance and other loan forms.

Curious kids with questions Wilson has had many opportunities to work with school children, who come to learn about the Museum. Asked for a cute story about the questions kids ask, Wilson recalled one student who wondered what was it like “when everything was black and white.”

“Apparently, because all the photos from that time are black and white, the young man thought the entire world was black and white!” she said with a laugh. “Another time while showing pictures of the large estate of Thomas Barbour Bryan, a little guy said, ‘it would be so hard to cut the grass.’”

Asked her favorite exhibit, Wilson is quick to answer that it is the By All Accounts exhibit, a collection that showcases the history of Elmhurst, which is now part of the permanent collection.

“It was a total teamwork effort,” she said. “Lance [Tawzer, curator], Dan [Lund, registrar], and I were all given assignments and began collecting photos and other items that re-

flected community life in Elmhurst, including business. There are so many components to the exhibits.”

She talked about the “Biography Wall.”

“We decided to choose 20 people from Elmhurst to make them a part of the exhibit,” she said. “We wanted to get a balance of very early people as well as more recent and a good mix of men and women. It was a tough job getting all the people who have contributed to Elmhurst’s history and narrow it down to just 20. It was one of the toughest parts of putting the exhibit together.

“It was really interesting to see that whole exhibit come together.

“Well, I remember when I first started, if we wanted to make a photocopy, we had to walk over to City Hall!” she said with a laugh. “We tried to just use carbon paper. When Lance [Tawzer] came on board, he introduced us to a whole new hemisphere of technology. It’s when we started using videos, so people could see a series of photos rather than just one.”

Asked what she’ll miss the most, Wilson said the staff people she works with and “a host of wonderful volunteers.”

“There was a woman on the staff here named Vivian who worked about eight years and then resigned.

About two years later, she came back to volunteer. She wanted to do data entry and most people hate that job!

We knew she was dependable, professional, we were happy to have her “Then there was Peggy, a professional librarian who was head of the library at Fenton High School for many years. She stopped in over the summer or whenever she could.

That was 15 years ago and she’s still volunteering. With her kind of experience, she’s very good with research questions.”

Developing historiography class for Elmhurst College Every January, Elmhurst College has a “J-term,” that is, a month of concentrated study in one area.

“There is a professor Dr. Rob Butler who contacted the History Museum to develop a course historiography,” she said. “That is, the history of history. We worked with Elaine Page who is the archivist at Elmhurst College. They have been bringing classes here for at least 10 years. It’s fun to have interaction with the college Her favorite item from students.”

shoes — that belonged to Marjorie Wilder, whose father was Edward T. Wilder, a major business figure in the City of Chicago. Marjorie married William Emery Jr., who was an industrial person.

“Their wedding gift from his father was the Walter Burley Griffin-designed house here in Elmhurst,” Wilson said. “Peggy looked up the wedding and found a write-up that said invitations had to be recalled because the grandmother had passed away, but the wedding invitations had already gone out. There was no coverage of the wedding. They got married at the Wilder residence with family only.”

Best of luck It’s bittersweet to think of Nancy Wilson no longer at the Elmhurst History Museum. She will be greatly missed, but will still be a familiar face around town. After 44 years, she has managed to carve her own spot in Elmhurst history, for she will be long remembered in her role as Archivist.

EWAN begins dental program 100+ Women Who Care organization elects to provide funds

First clients have joined program The first client to take advantage of the program is a mother of four who hasn’t seen a dentist for five years.

She and her husband work low-wage jobs with no dental insurance and the cost of care is not in their budget.

Consequently, she has been living with pain in her mouth and headaches for a year. She is very excited and grateful that she can finally get the care she needs.

A critical aspect of the program is the dentists who will provide care.

Six area dentists are partnering with EWAN to provide the needed services, including Daniel DeSalvo, Douglas Kay, Kevin Kopp, Gene Leonard, Tom McKenna, and Thomas Newman.

Each dentist agrees to see at least one patient a year, and either donate the treatment or share the costs with EWAN depending on the expense

of the procedure. The program prioritizes the alleviation of suffering, improvement of employment opportunities, and an enhanced quality of life.

The Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network is in its 20th year of operation. They provide emergency financial assistance to families who live in Elmhurst, attend a partnering Elmhurst church, or have children in an Elmhurst school. They are located in the lower level of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. They are open from Monday to Friday from 10:00 am until noon, although closed Fridays in June and July.

Few people relish a trip to the dentist, yet imagine what life would be like if you needed to see the dentist but couldn’t afford to go. Many people in that situation are reconciled to living with the pain or discomfort.

A new program at the Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network (EWAN) seeks to provide dental care for clients without the means to pay.

The program launched May 1, the same day the 100+ Women Who Care of Elmhurst voted to make EWAN and, more specifically its new dental program, the recipient of its quarterly grant. to a local not-forprofit organization.

On June 5, representatives from 100+ Women Who Care presented 145 checks for $100 each to EWAN Executive Director Jackie Crnkovich and the dental program coordinator, Mary Jean Sanders.

The 100+ Women Who Care Elmhurst is a local chapter of a national organization. They are dedicated to the idea that when a group of women come together to give to worthy organizations, their gifts can be leveraged to have greater impact. Founded in 2013 by five Elmhurst women, the vibrant group of women has donated more than $200,000 to 15 notfor-profit organizations and projects.

“This gift means so much in terms of giving the program the funding it needs to take off and be a success,” said Crnkovich. “It gives us the ability to effect change in a lot of peoples’ lives.”

IC Catholic Prep kicks off summer construction project On Friday, May 26, IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) embarked on a major summer construction project. The primary focus is to update the main floor of the school building, remodeling the office and faculty workroom and creating more flexibility, mobility and collaboration in the 5 classrooms.

This project, made possible through the generosity of an IC alumnus, will transform the main floor to reflect the ICCP school color theme – Navy, White, and Gold.

• Incorporating input from both faculty and students, the project includes: • Installation of new carpet in the

hallway and LVT plank flooring in the classrooms, main office and faculty workroom.

• Replacement of all chalkboards with whiteboard walls and student work display areas.

• Replacement of all student and teacher workspaces in each classroom with new desks, chairs and storage cabinets.

• Painting of all walls, lockers, classroom doors and select wall tiles to reflect school colors.

• Staining of all original woodwork on entry doors and classroom cabinetry, as well as refinishing the associated hardware.

• Installation of custom sun block-

ing roller shades in classrooms.

• Upgrading of all lighting to energy efficient LED in main office, hallway, teacher’s workroom and classrooms.

• Installation of a new Public Address (PA) system throughout the entire school building.

• Installation of new access points to improve the technology infrastructure.

“We are so grateful to our alum who made all this possible,” said ICCP President Amy Fahey. “I hope our alumni, friends and families take the opportunity to come visit this fall to see this improved learning environment.”

Rocky is a Large, Adult, Neutered Male dog that is 10 years old.

He is a White German Shepherd Dog with a mix of tan color on his ears and along his backside down to his tail. He also has a black mark in the middle of his tongue. He’s not micro-chipped, but he did have his chain collar with tags on.

A witness saw a person with a Black Jeep Wrangler put a dog that matches this description in their car. If you know someone with a car like that let them know the dog went missing and their owners are looking for him. The family is devastated.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

June 7 • A victim in the 100 block of W. Park Ave. told police at around 10:04 a.m. that his Ford Explorer had been keyed while parked in the northeast corner of the lot. The victim was unsure if the scratch was there prior to leaving his vehicle in the lot. He did not observe anyone hanging around the area. No other obvious damage was observed of surrounding vehicles.

• Police said that subsequent to a call for a suspicious auto in the 800 block of S. Route 83, officers located a suspect’s vehicle hanging off the elevated loading dock at the above location. Officers located the suspect inside the building who stated she was waiting for roadside assistance to help with her vehicle.

Suspect was disoriented and confused. Medics were called and transported the suspect to a hospital for further evaluation.

June 1 The owner of a building in the 400 block of S. York told police at around 2:15 p.m. that a person was found sleeping on the rear exterior stairway and served with a no trespass order.

Disorderly conduct, trespass notice

June 7 A victim near Randolph and West told police at around 1:40 p.m. that a vehicle followed her vehicle and the suspect threw an unknown object at her vehicle. The case is pending investigation.

June 6 Police said officers responded to the Metra train depot in the 100 block of W. First St. at around 5:01 p.m. for an intoxicated subject on the Metra train refusing to exit. According to police, a complainant told police that Timothy D. Countryman, 40, of Wheaton, boarded the train in Chicago, fell on the platform, appeared to be very intoxicated and while riding the train fell numerous times. Upon speaking with Countryman, police said he could not stand or walk on his own. He was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-public intoxication.

June 5 A complainant in the 900 block of N. York told police at around 3:53 p.m. that she was in the drive-thru lane of McDonald’s and did not realize the car line had moved forward.

The suspect in the vehicle behind her honked, cursed, and yelled racial slurs out the window at her. The victim exited her vehicle and the two exchanged words. The victim did not want to sign complaints, but would like the suspect contacted and spoken to about his behavior.

June 4 Jorge Adalberto Garcia Tomas, 28, and Walter Tomas Garcia, 28, both of Wyoming, Mich., were issued citations for befouling public property in the 500 block of S. York at around 12:33 a.m. Police said the suspects

June 3 Police said Paul Hornstra, 26, of Elmhurst, was located intoxicated in the 1-100 block of Elm Creek Drive and unable to care for himself. He was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-public intoxication, and released to the care of a family member.

June 7 Michael Martino, 64, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, two counts of disobeying a stop sign, improper lane usage and making an improper turn subsequent to a traffic stop near Palmer and Schiller at around 3:10 a.m.

June 4 • Darius Crosby, 27, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, disobeying a traffic control device and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near York and I-290 at around 4:43 a.m.

• Kenneth Heraty, 19, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for possession of alcohol by a minor and improper equipment on a bicycle near York and St. Charles at around 2:18 a.m.

Police said Heraty was observed riding a bicycle without a bicycle light, and hid in a driveway, but was later located. He was found to be in possession of alcohol and was under 21, according to police.

June 3 • Samuel Coyte, 20, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor in the 100 block of Fairfield at around 8:13 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a complaint of a possible intoxicated driver, Coyte was located at his residence. According to police, Coyte stated he had consumed one beer elsewhere prior to driving home. He did not display signs of impairment, police said.

• Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop for a graduated driver’s license violation near Poplar and South at around 6:29 p.m., Suspect 1 was found to have more than one passenger in his vehicle and also was found to be in possession of alcohol by a minor. Suspect 2, a passenger, was found to be in possession of alcohol and tobacco by a minor. Suspect 1 was cited for a graduated driver’s license violation and possession of alcohol by a minor. Suspect 2 was cited for possession of tobacco by a minor and possession of alcohol by a minor. Each suspect was released to a parent at the scene.

June 2 • Marvin Finley, 50, of Worth, Ill., was charged DUI and illegal transportation of alcohol in the 600 block of W. North at around 5:07 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a complaint of a possible intoxicated driver at a gas station, Finley was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

• Mallory Parchutz, 28, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, improper lighting and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Roosevelt at around 2:07 a.m.

June 1 Justin Spaeth, 23, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Belden at around 1:04 a.m.

Possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia, controlled substance

June 7 • Ryan Prisant, 19, of Broadview, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Oak Street at around 2:43 a.m.

• Police said that subsequent to investigating a drug complaint in the 400 block of E. South St. at around 5:02 p.m., a reporting officer made contact with the suspects and could detect an odor of cannabis coming from inside their vehicle. A search of the vehicle yielded a small digital scale with cannabis residue. One juvenile suspect was issue a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia.

June 6 • Joseph Rubio, 19, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia in the 100 block of N. Palmer at around 1:51 p.m.

• Chevanse Ward, 23, of Chicago, was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis subsequent to an investigation of a suspicious vehicle in the 400 block of W. Wrightwood at around 11:42 p.m.

June 4 • Jacob Brooks, 39, of Oak Brook, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near York and I-290 at around 4:13 p.m. Police said Brooks was found to be in possession of a glass pipe commonly used to smoke cannabis.

• Giovanni Todaro, 22, of Northlake, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia, expired registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Third at around 11:28 p.m.

June 2 • Monique Aviles-Lane, 31, of Daluth, Ga., was issued a citation for possession of cannabis near North and I-290 at around 10:45 a.m.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, a strong odor of cannabis was emitting from the vehicle. Cannabis was located under the passenger seat.

• Jonathan Beltran, 24, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and disobeying a traffic control device near Marion and Palmer at around 3:48 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Beltran was found to be in possession of a cannabis pipe.

Suspicious circumstances

June 5 A complainant in the 600 block of W. Crockett told police at around 1:48 p.m. that her son and a group of his friends were playing baseball when they were approached by a suspect who asked them to help find a lost dog.

The suspect did not ask any of the boys to get into his vehicle and did not make any attempt to grab them/pull them inside. The vehicle

then left the area. The suspect was described as either a white or Hispanic male, between 20 and 35 years old, with short brown hair, shaved sides, unshaven with a scruffy beard and wearing a dirty light-colored T-shirt. The suspect’s vehicle was described as a black, newer model unknown type pickup truck with black tires and rims, a clean exterior, yellow bungees/straps in the bed of the truck. The vehicle had a possible cap without windows on the bed of the pickup.

June 4 • An officer responded for a check on the well-being of a person at a food store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 5:36 p.m.

The person was located sitting outside of the store, where she had been since the previous evening. She was upset because she was homeless and was not able to stay at a homeless shelter in Villa Park. She told a volunteer at the shelter that she was going to write a letter and say it was his fault for her killing herself. The officer contacted the shelter and was told by the volunteer that the victim did state she was “going to get a hotel and kill herself.”

The victim was transported to a hospital for evaluation.

• Officers and medics responded after a victim sent a picture to a friend of her arm with a cut on it on the above date. Contact was made with the victim, who stated that she was depressed and used a razor to cut herself. She stated she has had suicidal thoughts but was not intending to commit suicide. She was transported to a hospital for treatment.

June 7 David Binns, 36, of St. Charles, was charged with felony retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 5:54 p.m.

Police said officers responded to a shoplifting that had just occurred at the store where Binns left the scene in a blue van. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the suspect. A review of security footage shows Binns walking out of the store with a sonic toothbrush without paying, according to police.

June 6 • A complainant in the 100 block of S. Route 83 told police at around that a suspect came into a salon for a pedicure, was not satisfied and walked out without paying. The complainant did not wish to press charges, just to have the suspect told not to return. The suspect’s mother said she would pay the bill and the officer advised the business.

• A complainant in the 300 block of S. Washington told police at around 3:14 p.m. that she was gardening along the south side of her house when she saw a suspect running from her house carrying a cardboard box with Amazon tape on it. The suspect entered the passenger side of a vehicle and fled the area.

One of the suspects was described as a black male in his 20s, with a dark complexion, short hair and possibly wearing tan shorts and a black T-shirt. A second suspect, the driver of the vehicle, was described as a black female in her 20s, with a dark complexion and hair in a ponytail.

• A complainant told police at around 5:32 p.m. that he was in the office and observed two suspects enter the store in the 300 block of S. Route 83. Suspect #1 stood in line to be helped, and Suspect #2 walked to the back of

City’s Electricity Aggregation Program ends September 2017 Participants will be automatically transferred to ComEd The City’s Electric Aggregation Program (EAP) will be suspended starting in August 2017. Residents who are participating in the City’s EAP will have their electric supply automatically transferred to ComEd. This change will be reflected in the September 2017 billing and no action is needed on the resident’s part to revert back to ComEd. The City has managed an EAP since 2012. This program enabled the City to negotiate lower electric rates than ComEd for residents’ home and small businesses’ electric bills by aggregating the community’s electricity usage. The EAP was an “opt-out” program that offered savings to residents and small commercial business customers.

In 2014, the City followed a process to renew the EAP. At that time, it was advised that the ComEd rate had been more comparable to the EAP rate, however the EAP rate would still provide savings. The City approved a three-year contract to renew the EAP, which continued to be an “opt-out” program offering savings to residents and commercial business customers.

• Police

As has been the case since the EAP began in 2012, the City’s Finance Committee periodically reviews the EAP results and electricity commodity pricing trends. It became apparent starting in 2015 that the EAP rate was not affording measurable savings over the ComEd rate. In 2016, the City’s Finance Committee recommended that residents’ and small business’ participating in the EAP move back to ComEd which had been offering a consistently lower rate, which would thereby save them money.

The City recently sought bids to renew the Municipal Electricity Aggregation Program expiring August 2017, in hopes that the EAP bids would once again provide savings over the ComEd rate. The bids that the City received were very comparable to the ComEd base rate. Hence, the City is in the process of suspending the EAP since savings could not be guaranteed.

All resident and small business accounts currently in the program will automatically be returned to ComEd in August, which will be reflected in the September billing notice. Again,

no action is needed on the resident’s part to revert back to ComEd. ComEd will be mailing notices to all residents and small businesses in July with information on this auto-

matic transfer. The one advantage to the EAP rate was that the electricity commodity was generated from 50% renewable sources. Those residents wishing to purchase the electricity

commodity from renewable sources can do so within the open marketplace.

Both suspects left the store without paying for the item in a teal Dodge Caravan, in a southbound direction in the lot. The first suspect was described as a black male between 18 and 23 years old, wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans. The second suspect was described as a black male between 18 and 23 years old wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

• A victim in the 200 block of E. Crescent told police at around 2:41 p.m. that he was advised by Chase Bank in Scottsdale, Ariz. that a suspicious attempt to withdraw money from his checking account had occurred. A suspect described as a black male wearing a baseball cap came into a Chase branch in Arizona with a fictitious Illinois driver’s license. The bank denied the transaction.

June 3-June 4 Police said a black 2013 Hyundai Sonata was stolen from the driveway between the above dates in the 800 block of S. York. The victim realized the vehicle was missing when he found his other vehicle’s door ajar and the center console open. The key fob for the stolen vehicle was taken from the console. Small trees bordering their driveway were damaged due to being run over by the car. The vehicle was entered into LEADS and later recovered in the Englewood area of Chicago.

June 2 • Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 100 block of Industrial Drive at around 11:15 a.m. A victim reports that four Firestone performance tires and rims were taken from a parked

• A complainant in the 600 block of N. Michigan St. told police at around 4:06 p.m. that he found three fraudulent charges were made by his wife’s debit card. The fraudulent charges were “Venmo” payments. The bank was notified and the account was cancelled.

June 1 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 200 block of E. Crestview at around 12:39 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect pried open a door on an equipment trailer and removed two leaf blowers and a 14-inch chain saw. Small pry marks were observed on the door of the trailer where the suspect forced entry. Neighborhood interviews were conducted, and an evidence technician was notified.

Jan. 28, 2010-Oct. 30, 2011 A victim in the 200 block of N. Bonnie Brae told police that she attempted to open a Nicor Gas account at her new address and was informed

by Nicor Gas that there was already an account opened under her name.

Officer advised the victim to contact her bank and cancel her credit cards.

June 5 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Howard and Lake at around 1:26 a.m., Luis Kirkaldy, 28, of Elmhurst, provided a false name and date of birth. His true identity was learned and he was found to have an expired driver’s license and two failure to appear warrants out of DuPage County. He was charged with obstructing identification, no valid driver’s license, driving without lights when required, and no insurance.

On Saturday afternoon of June 10, the Independent was invited to attend a product launch party held at Elmhurst 255, where Giana Radazzo performs just one aspect of her career. She also works parttime as a hairdresser at My Friends Place salon in downtown Elmhurst.

And in her spare time — whenever that is — she invented a new toothpaste.

Here’s the stunner — she is 21 years old!

Her family, friends and other supporters — including Mayor Steve Morley — gathered in the party room at Elmhurst 255 surround-

ed by purple decorations and food items (think cake pops with purple icing) to celebrate the rollout of the toothpaste. Even Morley’s in-laws who live in the building stopped by.

“I didn’t want to go to college so when I told my parents, they said that was okay but I would have to have two careers, two trades,” Radazzo said. “I went to school to be a hairdresser, then I got my real estate license. I just stumbled across this invention while working with hair.”

Here’s how it works: “There are blondes who want to be platinum,” she said. “To keep platinum blonde from looking yellow, we use a purple rinse. It works because yellow and purple are on opposite sides of the color wheel so they cancel each other out. So I thought, what if we had purple toothpaste? Wouldn’t that also cancel out the yellowing of teeth?”

That’s the science behind it and she found a manufacturer who was interested. The toothpaste is now in production and is available on

a limited basis. At this time, it can be found at behindthechair.com, a site dedicated to product secrets only known to beauticians. Radazzo hopes to have the toothpaste in stores soon.

The people at Elmhurst 255 recognized Radazzo’s abilities and personality right away and offered her a job as a leasing agent the first time they met her. That is her full-time position, but she still works two days a week at My Friends Place.

What is crystal clear when you talk with Radazzo is her absolute love of Elmhurst.

“I love it here and I hope I never have to leave,” she said, a fact her mother Kim Radazzo affirms. “I grew up here, I went to Field, Sandburg and York.”

“She said she’d never leave this community, she just loves it in Elmhurst,” said Kim. “Her dad and I hope she won’t.”

Viewpoint Slices of life I’ve always been a saucy type. It probably started with ketchup – my first encounter with sauce when I was just a tiny tator tot of a girl. Almost everyone has some sort of experience with ketchup. Many of us have a long-term ongoing relationship and find it hard to imagine life without ketchup. My husband is a spreader. I am a dipper.

What started with ketchup grew and expanded to various flavors and varieties of thickened liquids called by different names – condiments, gravies, dips, salsas, dressings, syrups, pestos and alfredos – but at their essence each one a sauce of some sort.

Savory or sweet, thick or thin, white or red, cheesy or creamy, hot or cold – I loved them all. Or at least nearly all. What’s not to love? Sauces themselves are created for the sole purpose of enhancing a dish. Whether

Reader objects to Confederate flag in Memorial Day parade The Memorial Day Parade was wonderful and included so many from our community, however, I was appalled to see one group displaying the confederate flag on their float. I am a U.S. History teacher and understand the argument that they were reflecting the lives lost by the South. The confederate flag currently reflects racism and is hurtful to the African American citizens of our community. There were a lot of other ways so show respect to the men that fought in the Civil War but choosing to display the Confederate flag was inconsiderate and hurtful and in my opinion wrong! Whether you agree with the premise that the Confederate flag is racist or not, the fact that our African American neighbors see it that way should be reason enough to not have it in our parade. One only needs to turn on the news these days to see what racism is doing to our neighborhoods and I would like to think Elmhurst can rise above that

I’m not a chef, but I do dabble in sauces. When you love something like I love eating it makes sense to know how to concoct a few sauces yourself. I toss, stir and whisk together gravy, salad dressing and condiments a plenty. I even do the roux.

Once you break sauces down into a list of simple ingredients, (and most are fairly simple) they aren’t so intimidating.

Ketchup, brown sugar and little yellow mustard create a basic barbecue sauce. Ketchup and just about anything makes something else. You can take it from there.

The Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation (ECAF) will hold its annual golf outing on Friday, August 18 at White Pines Golf Course in Bensenville. ECAF announced it would be honoring Joe Schamberger as this year’s “Friend of the Children.”

An Elmhurst resident for 25 years, Joe and his wife Amy Schiller have a daughter who is a 7th grader at IC Grade School. Amy is a managing partner with the Schiller Team of Realtors.

A graduate of the University of Missouri with a degree in economics, Joe is a principal at Schamberger Bros., Inc., a beer distributing company founded by his grandfather in 1933. The business serves five counties in the Chicagoland area.

Joe and his company have been long-time sponsors of several Elmhurst organizations. He served as the Chairman of the Ray Graham Golf Classic, a fundraiser which benefits children with disabilities. Eagle Scout candidate collects shoes for Pine Ridge In 2014, McLean Khayat did a summer shoe drive for Elmhurst-based non-profit Soles For Kids to complete his BSA Eagle Scout project. At that time, he collected 657 pairs of shoes, which were later distributed to the needy.

Now, three years later, as an Assistant Scoutmaster for his Troop 117 in Elmhurst, McLean wanted to take his “project” the next step with Soles For Kids. In May, he and his mom

filled their minivan with 800+ pairs of shoes, delivering them to the Lakota (Sioux) Native American region in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, an under-resourced part of America where there is great poverty and great need.

Anyone wishing to donate gently-used shoes to Soles For Kids can drop their donations off at the bins in Elmhurst Photo Boutique, 535 S. Spring Road, Elmhurst, where there is an ongoing shoe collection.

ICCP announces new assistant principal, director of curriculum Sister Megan Farrelly to retire after 10 years IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) has announced that Steve Davidson will join the staff as Assistant Principal, Director of Curriculum. Since 2003, Davidson has served as a Spanish Steve Davidson teacher at Marist High School in Chicago, Illinois.

During his tenure at Marist, Davidson has also held a variety of roles including Director of Student Activities and member of the Principal’s Advisory Council.

Davidson will succeed Sister Megan Farrelly, O.P., who is retiring at the conclusion of the 2016-17 school year after 10 years at ICCP. “There are no words to express our gratitude and appreciation to Sister Megan for all of her years of service to IC Catholic Prep,” said Levar. “She is an amazing administrator who has given selflessly to our students and our staff. Not only are we saying good-bye to our colleague but also to our dear friend.”

Davidson has taught Spanish I - IV

at both the academic and honors levels.

He served as a Team Leader for the development of a common Spanish I and II curriculum and facilitated the use of common assessments in both courses.

In addition, Davidson designed both the mid-term and final exam in Spanish I Honors at Marist and created the Spanish placement exam for incoming freshmen.

As the Director of Student Activities at Marist, Davidson was involved with a wide variety of programs and clubs.

In addition to drafting a five-year Strategic Plan for Student Activities, he supervised and mentored each group’s goals, student involvement, expectations and events. Davidson designed a faculty moderator handbook detailing the general responsibilities of all club moderators and those responsibilities specific to each individual club. While in this role, he also served as the moderator for both the National Honor Society and Student Council.

“I am thrilled that Steve will be joining our staff,” said ICCP Principal Pamela Levar. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table and I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with him.”

Take a field trip to the farm Cool Cities Coalition hosts venture to community agricultural location

Back by popular demand, Elmhurst Cool Cities invites residents to join their free field trip to the farm on Sat., June 24, 10 a.m. - noon.

Elmhurst resident and Cool Cities member Bob Vierow’s farm in Dundee is home to Bob’s Fresh and Local CSA. Vierow uses crop rotation to control weed and pest pressures, purchases organic seed and grows all his produce using organic methods. He never uses chemical fertilizers, weed killers or pesticides on any food he grows.

Community supported agriculture,

or CSA, allows consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. In essence, the consumer becomes a “shareholder,” and is offered a membership or subscription to seasonal vegetables and other farm products.

The field trip includes a hayride out to the fields, a stop to see the farm animals, and a visit the greenhouse.

Attendees are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and eat on the property after the tour. Transportation is not provided to Dundee, but Cool Cities will attempt to arrange carpools.

Walkers take 5th annual strides against rare disease The Fifth Annual Strides Against MG Walk welcomed 230 participants on Sunday, June 4, at Berens Park. The walk raised $26,000 for Conquer Myasthenia Gravis, a nonprofit organization that funds MG patient assistance and research, and provides patient education and support.

“Last year I was in the hospital with MG (myasthenia gravis), so it feels great to be here today,” commented Sara Hasemeyer.

Her husband Matt appreciated the upbeat tone of the day, noting, “When we walked into the local support group, we were the youngest ones. This is entirely different.”

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease that causes fluctuating weakness. It can affect muscles that control eye movements, eyelids, chewing, swallowing, breathing, coughing and facial expression, as well as the arms and legs.

Bartels was chosen for his contriKen Bartels butions to the betterment of the Elmhurst community through nearly 40 decades of support for the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (including terms as a Board of Directors member in the 1990s, 2000s and today), his public service as a former Chairman of the Elmhurst Economic Development Commission and his current work as an economic development consultant for the City of Elmhurst, his charitable and philanthropic work with the Rotary Club of Elmhurst and numerous notfor-profit organizations, and his personal and business support of the Chamber Golf Outing.

The annual award honors the Good Works of the late A.J. “Toche” Terrones, the Chamber’s President and CEO for a decade until his passing the night before the 1999 golf outing.

The City of Elmhurst has hired contractor “Sheridan Plumbing & Sewer of Bedford Park, IL”, who will begin cleaning and video inspecting storm sewers in select areas of Elmhurst in the upcoming months, weather permitting.

This annual project is a planned approach to minimize storm sewer backups and blockages by root-cutting and/or flushing city-owned sewer pipe. This project began in 2016, and each year focuses on a different area in Elmhurst. The project’s goal is to clean all sewer lines within the city on a rotational basis. As part of the cleaning process, each pipe segment and manhole will be evaluated with regard to structural condition and hydraulic capacity. The evaluation will be used to also assist in allocation of available funds for repair and maintenance of the storm sewer collection system.

Pictured on the right you will find the 2017 Storm Sewer Cleaning Project Map. Crews will begin cleaning in Area #4 and will work their way North to areas 5, 6, and 7.

Elmhurst Post 187 American Legion baseball team defeats Mt. Prospect IC Catholic Prep’s Reed throws complete game, strikes out nine

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 Muddogs kicked off the 2017 season by going 1-2 during a span of three games.

The Muddogs closed out last week with a 9-2 victory against Mt. Prospect Post 525 at Prospect High School in Mt. Prospect.

Elmhurst broke open a 1-1 tie early with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.

The Muddogs added a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Elmhurst had nine hits in the game. Ray Abarca had a hit and a run scored. IC Catholic Prep’s Austin Reed had a hit and an RBI. York’s Mike Bernal had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. York’s Nick Lee had a hit and a run scored, while Fenton’s Tim Beecroft had a hit and a run scored.

Michael Hoffman (IC Catholic Prep) had a run scored and a walk. York’s Tamaine Durr had two runs scored, a hit and an RBI. Vince Bilotti had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and two walks, while Fenton product Alejandro Orosco had a hit and an RBI. Ryan Malek had a run scored, while Michael Liszka had a hit.

Elmhurst stole eight bases with Bilotti stealing three and Durr swiping two.

Reed was the winning pitcher. He went the distance, allowing six hits and no earned runs over seven innings. He struck out nine and walked three.

Earlier, Post 187 dropped a 4-1 game to Arlington Heights Post 208 at Rec Park off Northwest Highway in Arlington Heights.

Elmhurst led 1-0 after a half inning, but Arlington scored two runs in the first and two more in the third to conclude the scoring.

Post 187 was limited to four hits in the game. York’s Austin Gelsomino had two hits, while Fenton’s Bryan Larsen had a run scored and a walk.

Bernal drew a walk. Lee had a hit.

Abarca had a walk, while Jordan Vogel had a hit. One of Gelosmino’s hits was a double.

Gelsomino took the loss. He pitched three innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs. Durr pitched the final three innings and allowed a hit and had one strikeout.

The Muddogs kicked off their season with an 11-3 loss to Morton Grove Post 134 at Niles North High School in Niles.

Morton Grove jumped out to a 6-1 lead after two innings and led 10-1 after three innings.

Elmhurst was limited to six hits and made five errors.

IC Catholic Prep’s Griffen Eichhorn had a hit and an RBI. IC Catholic Prep’s CJ Slowinski drew a walk.

Orosco drew a walk as well. Bernal had a hit, a run scored and a walk.

Gelsomino had two hits and scored a run. Lee had a hit and a run scored, while Bilotti had a hit and an RBI. Durr drew a walk.

Of Elmhurst’s six hits, four went for doubles, with Eichhorn, Bernal, Gelsomino and Bilotti each hitting a two-bagger.

Elmhurst stole three bases as a team.

Beecroft started the game and was relieved by Orosco and Lee. The trio did combine to strike out eight Morton Grove batters.

Post 187 was scheduled to open the home portion of its schedule earlier this week with contests at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst against Arlington Heights Post 208, Lake in the Hills Post 1231 and Elgin Post 57.

Timothy Christian’s Allen named to Class 2A all-state team Trojans place four on all-MSC Red team

Timothy Christian junior baseball standout Jimmy Allen was properly rewarded for his play on the field this spring.

Allen recently was named to the Class 2A all-state team put out by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association. Allen was one of only four juniors to make the all-state team and assistant coach Jim Boven pointed out Allen was one of only four Chicago-area players named to the team.

Allen was a key cog in Timothy Christian winning its first-ever sectional title and coming within one game of playing in the state semifinals in Peoria.

“He had a great year,” said Timothy coach Jim Snoeyink. “He led our team in virtually every offensive category. He struck out seven times all season and his on-base percentage was outstanding.”

Allen batted .459 with 45 hits. Of

those 45, hits 23 went for extra bases.

Allen also had a .561 on-base percentage.

“More than half his hits were for extra bases,” Snoeyink noted. “He had an outstanding season.”

As did Timothy Christian as a whole, the coach noted.

“We had a good run at the end,” said Snoeyink. “We had a lot of fun.

We got on a roll. Part way through the year we made some defensive changes and that seemed to help. We had so many rainouts and breaks in the schedule in the beginning of the year.

Once we started playing regularly we started getting in a rhythm. And then we started hitting the heck out of the ball and playing good baseball.”

One of those key defensive changes was swapping catcher Noah Marrera and third baseman Connor Gwaltney on defense. “That sparked us for some reason,” said Snoeyink. “We also started playing Nick Huisman more at first and moved Joey Davidson to second. Those two moves provided a spark for the rest of the season and helped us defensively.

We played good baseball after that.”

Timothy defeated St. Joseph 2-1 in

the regional championship by scoring two runs in the seventh inning. The Trojans hit well in the sectional semifinal against Chicago F.W. Parker.

“F.W. Parker had a really good pitcher and we scored eight or nine runs off him. We came out hitting,” said Snoeyink.

Timothy also brought the heavy lumber in the sectional title game against Chicago Holy Trinity. “We jumped out to a quick start and led 7-2,” said Snoeyink.

Of note, Brian Schiff started both sectional games on the mound for the Trojans. “He got a pair of wins.

That’s unusual to start both games of the sectional,” the coach said. “He didn’t pitch a lot during the year, but he got healthy and he won both games.”

Huisman started the regional final and picked up the win with Allen coming in for the save.

Timothy saw its season end at the hands of conference foe Chicago Christian. It was Timothy’s third loss of the season to Chicago Christian.

“Chicago Christian has good pitching,” said Snoeyink. “We got shut out three times against them. We lost 7-0

in the supersectional and we had two hits. I looked it up, Chicago Christian played 42 games and 27 times gave up zero or one run. You will win a lot of games doing that. It was frustrating because we were hitting so well and only had two hits.”

Allen, Schiff, Marrera and Davidson were named to the all-Metro Suburban Conference Red Division team.

“All those guys had great seasons,” said Snoeyink.

Snoeyink is looking forward to next season with numerous players returning. “We have a lot of guys coming back,” he said. “We lost six seniors to graduation and we certainly will miss them. Josh Anderson is one of them and he could have been an all-conference player this year.

He was a four-year starter. We have Nick Huisman back and Jake Loerop pitched outstanding. Jimmy Allen is back. We’re excited about the guys we have coming back. Harrison Stanton is a freshman we brought up and we brought up Noah Marrera’s brother, Trent. We have a lot of guys we are looking forward to seeing next year and it is nice when you have your top three pitchers returning.”

Davidson named Timothy Christian outstanding senior male athlete Recently graduated senior excelled in basketball and baseball

Recently graduated Timothy Christian senior Joey Davidson can’t choose what his favorite sport to play is.

“My favorite depends on the season,” said Davidson. “It’s whatever sport I’m in that I tend to enjoy a lot.”

Davidson certainly enjoyed playing the sports he competed in at Timothy where he was a four-year contributor to the basketball and baseball teams. He also played golf his senior year.

Davidson’s contributions recently earned him Timothy Christian’s outstanding senior male athlete of the year honor.

“It feels good to receive that award,” he said. “A lot of hard work went into it. There were a lot of good athletes in my class.”

Davidson was a captain of the basketball team his junior and senior years and was a baseball captain his senior year.

In basketball, he helped the Trojans win regional titles his junior and senior years and was a two-time all-conference selection (honorable mention as a sophomore). Davidson also was a two time Illinois Christian School all-state selection in basketball.

He finished his career at Timothy with 1,031 points—ninth on the program’s all-time scoring list.

Davidson is one of only 11 players in school history to score 1,000 or more points in a career.

“I shot the ball better this year than I did last year,” he said. “I enjoyed playing basketball at Timothy. There is a lot of history with the school. It’s

more than 100 years old and we’ve developed some good rivalries. I like the history and tradition of it.”

In his senior year on the court, Davidson averaged 13.6 points and 4.8 rebounds to go with 1.7 assists per game. He also was second on the team in 3-pointers made with 28.

Davidson was an all-conference selection in baseball his senior year and helped lead the Trojans to their best season ever. Timothy won the program’s first sectional title and came within a win of playing in the state semifinals in Peoria. Davidson helped the Timothy baseball team win two regional titles. This spring, he hit .289 with 26 hits in 90 at-bats.

He had 18 runs scored and 16 RBI. Among his 26 hits were five doubles and one home run. He also walked 17 times and had an on-base percentage of .414. In the field, he made only four errors in 196 total chances and was involved in the turning of 11 double plays (a team high).

“Winning the sectional for the first time in school history was great,” he said. “I really liked our team. There were a lot of good guys on it.”

All together Davidson earned eight varsity letters (4 baseball, 3 basketball, 1 golf). He also helped the Timothy basketball team win a Metro Suburban Conference title his sophomore year and the Lisle Thanksgiving tournament title his senior year where he was named to the all-tournament team.

Davidson also was a flag football intramural Super Bowl champion all four years at Timothy and a dodgeball intramural champion three years.

“I am going to miss a lot of aspects of Timothy,” he said. “I will miss my time there.”

York baseball team opens summer campaign on high note Dukes place four on all-WSC Silver list from spring season

The York baseball team opened the summer portion of its schedule with a pair of wins against Leyden.

In a 7-3 win against Leyden, York trailed 2-0 after one inning, but scored three runs in the second and two more in the top of the fourth to go up 5-2.

The Dukes had seven hits.

Andrew Deardurff had a hit and three RBI to go with a walk. Ryan Ross had two hits, while Mike Pastuovic had a hit, a run scored and a walk. Mike Achepohl had two hits, a run scored and three RBI. Joe Goehl had a hit, a run scored and a walk.

Deardurff’s hit was a double. York stole five bases in the game.

Henry Judge was the winning pitcher. He went three innings and allowed five hits, while striking out

one. Tamaine Durr pitched the final three innings. He allowed two hits and struck out three.

York won the second game against Leyden 7-5. York trailed 5-3 after four innings, but scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The Dukes had six hits.

Clayton Letourneau had a hit, while Riley Hendron had an RBI. Brian Kunst and Chris Lee each scored a run. Timmy Bowbin had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. John Milling scored a run. Joe Orrico had a hit and a run scored. Kellen Gilmartin had a run scored. Zane Heemsoth had two hits and a run scored, while Will Rand had an RBI and Ian Pickell had a hit.

Adam Parat added an RBI. York had 18 players register some sort of offensive statistic in the game.

Heemsoth had a double, while Bowbin had a triple. Lee stole two bases. York stole five bases as a team.

Gilmartin, Eri Mato and Danny Dunn combined to throw a two-hitter.

Gilmartin pitched the first three in-

nings and allowed no hits, while striking out one. Mato struck out one in 1/3 of an inning, while Dunn pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and struck out five. Gilmartin was the winner.

York then split a doubleheader with Wheaton North.

“I liked how hard the kids played in the games,” said York coach Dave Kalal. “They hustle. If you want to get recognized as a varsity baseball player, what you do is out-hustle everybody. These first four games the kids played hard and they listened and learned. We’ve created an atmosphere here over the last seven or eight years where it’s on the guys how hard they play the game.”

Kalal noted he has 41 players in the summer program. “We have a big group,” he said. “We have a lot of juggling going on with positions and a lot of lineup and pitching changes.

We want to make sure we get a real good look at guys over the course of the summer.”

Kalal lauded the first-week work

of Letourneau and Pickell in particular. “Clayton is a junior,” said Kalal.

“He’s a tough ballplayer and a competitive kid. Ian threw four pretty solid innings against Wheaton North.

He’s relatively new to the program.

What I like about the summer is it’s always a good time to prove you are a varsity player. It’s their time to show what they can do and show us they belong and show us they can compete at this level.”

Circling back to the spring season, Joey Yaeger, Mike Bernal, Austin Gelsomino and Deardurff earned allWest Suburban Conference Silver Division honors.

“The spring season was a pleasant surprise, honestly,” said Kalal. “We had 13 juniors, two sophomores and we brought up a sophomore late in the season, so that’s 16 underclassmen on the roster out of 24 guys. I remember early in the season during a practice in the field house I said if we can pitch we are going to get the job done. It turned out to be a fun season. The

seniors showed their maturity and guys understood their roles. It made for a great season. We had a great work ethic and the leadership helped the younger kids on the roster. Those guys did whatever we asked of them and never complained. It was a great year because we won in so many different ways. We had about a half-dozen come-from-behind wins. It was exciting.”

Kalal would like to see York continue its momentum from the spring into the summer, and so on.

“It will be interesting this summer with all the returning kids we have to see who steps up and gets the job done,” he said. “We had a little momentum last summer after being a top-32 team in the summer and that went into this spring. Now we had a good spring and let’s see if we can take that momentum into the summer and move forward again as a program.”

York was scheduled to play three doubleheaders this week.

The York boys lacrosse team placed nine players on the 2017 allWest Suburban Conference team.

Pierceson Mapes (defense), David Leonard (attack) and Gavin Vandenberg (midfield) were named to the all-WSC first team. Marh Schneeloch (defense) and Jack Redick (midfield) were named to the all-WSC second team.

WSC honorable-mention selections included Steve Robertson (attack), Cory Jaeger (faceoff), Artie Renier (goalie) and Nick Thomas (long-stick midfield).

York finished the season with a 15-5 record and finished atop the WSC standings along with Glenbard West and Hinsdale Central with identical 4-1 records. York defeated Hinsdale Central 8-7 in overtime and lost

6-3 to Glenbard West.

York was the No. 11 seed in the IHSLA state tournament. The Dukes defeated No. 22-seed Naperville North 9-6 in the first round and then lost 10-7 to No. 6-seed Neuqua Valley in the second round. Neuqua Valley advanced to the state semifinals.

York boys tennis The York boys tennis team finished the season with an 8-13 mark in dual meets and went 1-5 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division action.

“We lost about five (dual meets) by one match that came down to a thirdset match tiebreaker,” York coach Shawna Zsinko noted. “Otherwise, our records would look better.”

At the WSC Silver meet, Austin Taylor took fifth at No. 1 singles.

Jakob Albert was sixth at No. 2 singles and Luke Brigman was fifth at No. 3 singles. Lion Hoelzel and Ja-

cob Wit were fifth at No. 1 doubles, while John Wheeler and Tom Vogt were fourth at No. 2 doubles. The York No. 3 doubles team, which included Domenic Conversa, took third and the No. 4 doubles team of Kevin Rachwalski and Josh Mirretti was sixth.

Albert and the doubles team of Hoelzel and Wit won a round at sectionals but then lost in the state-qualifying round.

“This season was plagued by sickness and other absences,” Zsinko said. “There wasn’t a consistent lineup that was played. Most of the time, we were missing players and other players had to step up. We also struggled in the cold and wind. There was maybe one day we competed where the wind was less than 10 miles an hour. That being said, other teams handled it better than we did.”

Museum’s Family Fun Series stamps out summer boredom The Elmhurst History Museum is prescribing a cure for the summertime blues with a new monthly program series designed to make summer anything but boring.

The Summer Family Fun Series offers families an opportunity to

mix learning with fun connected to themes explored in the museum’s new exhibit, “Disco Demolition: The Night Disco Died,” including the musical history and culture of the late 1970s. These monthly family programs take place in the Elmhurst

History Museum’s Education Center, located at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst, from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

The programs are geared for participants age 5-12 accompanied by a parent or caregiver with a limit of 40 participants per session. The cost is $5 for members of the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation and $7 for non-members (no charge for adults).

On Wednesday, June 7, at about 8 p.m., the Independent received a tip that a hostage situation was underway in the 200 block of Plymouth in Villa Park. A witness saw a large group of police vehicles surrounding a residence and viewed one officer walking toward the house with a M-16 rifle.

As it turned out, the incident was not in fact a hostage situation but rather, a person of interest in two other criminal investigations had barricaded himself inside the house. He was not holding hostages.

The incidents in question allegedly occurred on the 900 block of West North Avenue in Villa Park, detectives said.

One involved the unlawful discharge of a firearm on June 6 and the second, a robbery that occurred on May 29. The person of interest was also wanted on an active warrant issued by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a release issued by the Villa Park Police Department, at approximately 3 p.m., detectives located a person of interest involving these incidents at a residence on the 200 block of East Plymouth in Villa Park. Upon making contact, the subject refused to exit the residence. Due to the concern that the subject may be armed with a handgun, the NIPAS Swat Team was requested to the scene. The subject continued a standoff and refused to exit the residence after being advised he was under arrest.

The subject eventually surrendered to officers and was taken into custody unharmed.

Detectives subsequently served a search warrant on the residence and recovered a handgun and ammunition.

Later, on Thursday, June 8 at about 12:30 p.m., the Villa Park Police released the suspect’s name and mug shot.

The suspect Timothy Jackson, 25, of Villa Park, was charged with Unlawful Possession of Weapon by Felon, being a firearm which is a class 2 felony and Resisting a Peace Officer, a class A misdemeanor. Jackson was transported to the DuPage County Jail to be held for bond court.
