Morley: ‘Every storm water project functioned as it should’
By Dee Longfellow FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT
Following the substantial rain event that took place in Elmhurst on Memorial Day, the Elmhurst City Council had a discussion about how flood mitigation projects are currently performing, especially how they worked on that day. During his mayoral report in the City Council meeting on Monday, June 6, Mayor Steve Morley brought up the recent storm. “We had a pretty major storm event … on Memorial Day, to the point that I couldn’t even get out of my own driveway,” he said. “This has been the wettest May on record since 1871 with over 8.2 inches of rain; that’s over 4.5 inches above normal. We posted a press release on Memorial Day, noting we had more than a half-inch of rain within 10 minutes. “The total storm event for the day was 2.6 inches and that is a LOT of rain, that is not normal, we continue to break records, not the kind of records we like. “I’m very happy to say every storm water project that we have put in place functioned as it should and took on water,” the mayor continued. “You can’t count how many homes we saved, but just the amount of people who were so grateful, who have posted online, who have called in, or who have written. This is probably the biggest test of our storm water infrastructure since I’ve been mayor. And I’m happy to actually show some of the answers to these residents who have been asking for help for so long.” Morley then brought up the District
205 School Board. “That being said, there are still residents near Jackson School and near York High School, who do not have the same relief that the other residents do during these events. There are residents who are still listening to weather reports and getting nervous every time it rains in Elmhurst.
“We have the ability to help them but not without the School Board pitching in.” The mayor then reminded residents that water in the streets is something that has to be accepted—but it’s better than water in homes. “Part of storm water management is in the street, so during bad rains there
will be times when the streets fill up,” he said. “A great example would be Crescent Street; it does have a storm water project right next to the fire department, so that took on water, but Crescent street also took on water. The key point, though, is the homes did not. “Streets taking on water is part of the system; it’s not great, but it’s not
a bad thing, when compared to homes taking on water.” Mulliner offers his views Alderman Mark Mulliner (7th Ward) spoke up as a follow-up to the flooding discussion.
