Before an audience of 12 people who opposed the rental units, the new chairman of the ZPC, Susan Rose noted that “this is not a done deal.”

At a public hearing on May 11, residents contended that the rental units would destroy the neighborhood. One resident stated the rental units “would break the culture of the area.”

Another resident said the company is trying to cram so much in the space on the south side of Butterfield between Prospect Ave. and Spring Road.

The next step, Rose said, is for the report of the ZPC, an advisory group, to be sent to the Development, Planning and Zoning (DPZ) Committee, a group of three aldermen. The DPZ Committee will either agree or disagree with the ZPC report.

D205 Foundation funds Thiems Grants for 2017-18 Friday, May 12 began as usual for students and staff of Elmhurst District 205 schools, until District 205 Foundation Board members began paying surprise visits to extraordinary teachers who were awarded the Thiems Educational Grants they had applied for last semester. Throughout the day, several teams of Foundation Directors visited all 13 schools from Madison Early Childhood Center to York High School with bells and balloons awarding grants to happy teachers and excited students.

A total of 25 grants worth $53,827 were awarded this year for implemen-

tation next academic year. The grant program is named after former District 205 Superintendent Dr. Russell Thiems, who was instrumental in in the formation of the Foundation for Educational Excellence, which has provided close to $1.5 million dollars in Thiems Grants to District 205 since 1989.

“The Foundation recently funded $23,000 in literacy resources,” said Brian Bresnahan, Foundation Chairperson, “and a large amount of 2017 grant dollars support science and technology that helps teachers deliver STEM-related curriculum.”

One highlight for this year is the awarding of several grants to help create Makerspaces at every elementary school library and two areas (Library and Lincoln Lab) at York High School. A makerspace is a collaborative workspace for making, learning, exploring and sharing. Spaces such as these support future-ready learning and allow teachers and students to embed creativity and innovation, critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration in learning experiences.

“Our donors have helped us enhance all curricular areas for students, including the arts and physical edu-

cation,” said Foundation Executive Director Lisa Fanelli, “and recently our focus has been on providing future-ready learning opportunities for students.”

Generous attendees at this year’s Foundation Gala, held in March, raised $106,000 that will go a long way in supporting Foundation programs. Recently funded enhancements include, three future-ready model classrooms in three different schools, Google Expedition Kits that bring the world to elementary classrooms through virtual field trips, Kano Kits that allow middle school

students to build and program their own computer, and Dano App Crayons for use with iPads to help preschoolers learn to write.

In addition to the grants, the Foundation supports instructional programs, community programs and partnerships, as well as District 205 initiatives, bringing the total more than $2.7 million raised and funded.

Staff from Elmhurst Hospital travels to Lebanon Provides medical treatment, surgery, services to displaced refugees

worked, they were well-educated, they had good lives with homes, careers, art and culture. Then came ‘The Crisis,’ as they call it. Suddenly people were being murdered. Family members were lost in the war.

“While we didn’t see the actual shooting, we saw the aftermath, all the injuries.”

The group split their time between the cities of Bekaa, Tripoli and Beirut in Lebanon. Bekaa had refugee camps, where there were hospitals and support for surgeries.

When we see images of children injured in the war in Syria or displaced to refugee camps in neighboring countries, it’s too easy to feel a moment of sympathy and then, go on to the next news story.

It’s quite a different matter when you’ve met these families, worked with them and helped restore their health.

Those were the feelings of three medical professionals from Elmhurst Memorial Hospital who recently visited Lebanon to bring medical supplies and assistance to the war-torn country.

The Independent had a chance to sit down with Dr. Michael Martirano, a general surgeon; his wife, Beth Martirano, who is an RN; and, Jennifer Lukas, also an RN. The April mission to Lebanon was sponsored by the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), which pays for rental use of special medical equipment (such as a laser machine) and provides space for treating patients.

Volunteer doctors and nurses cover their own transportation and lodging.

Elmhurst Hospital has contributed $5,000 toward medication, surgery and catheterization lab expenses, a sum that’s being matched by its medical staff.

Practicing their craft in different circumstances What was it like when they first got there?

“The first day we did a triage, some of us went to camps, others did the same thing in Beirut. The rest of the time, we were operating or monitoring patients. A lot of these patients showed up thinking they would have to wait until the next mission, but we were able to help a great many people.”

“I didn’t realize how much was going on,” said Beth Martirano. “We watched a documentary. It was interesting just hearing their stories.”

“I thought the camps might be a little better,” said Lukas. “I didn’t realize the depth of the horror. There was no running water, there was access to water but

no plumbing. We could get water for a shower or sink, but there were no flush toilets.”

“There are so many things we take for granted here that are simply not that easy over there,” said Dr. Martirano. “Washing your hands before surgery is a standard thing, but it’s much more difficult without running water.”

“Some of the people who came to the camps simply needed showers, a luxury we didn’t have there,” added Lukas.

Different people, different cultures “It’s heart-breaking because it is very embarrassing to them,” Martirano said. “All the people who came in looked as nice as they possibly could under the circumstances. You could tell they tried to look their best.”

“I noticed people looked older than they were,” said Lukas. “I learned you can’t get hung up on one person’s sad story because, well, they’re all sad stories.

“You don’t want to feel sorry for them. They don’t want us to feel sorry for them.”

“After a few days of seeing how much the medical personnel cared and how hard they worked, the refugees were very appreciative and grateful, when at first, they were a little apprehensive,” said Dr. Martirano. “They wanted us to break bread with them, they believe that eating together brings people closer. We brought in baklava and they were delighted.

“Once we had a meal with them, they were more trusting. Otherwise, they see people come and go all the time and it’s hard to trust people.”

The people of Syria love their country and want to go back to their homes, according to Dr. Martirano.

He said more than anything, the people want to go back and live like they did before “The Crisis.”

“Some invited us to their homes for tea,” said Lukas. “They were proud people, very proud of their homes, even their tents. They made decorations and did their best, considering there were sometimes as many as ten people in a 10’X10’ room.”

Would they go back again? Absolutely!

The one thing I learned was that the whole thing wasn’t about religion, race or politics, it was about helping people. We want to help people, and that’s what we did. We had no agenda, no politics involved. We came back knowing we did the right thing, we did a good thing. ” – Dr. Michael Martirano, about the mission to Lebanon

would in a heartbeat — they were asked what they might do differently.

“I’d absolutely go back, it was the greatest thing I’ve ever done in my nursing career,” said Lukas.

“I definitely got more than I gave,” said Beth.

“I’d try to bring more supplies,” said Lukas.

“They just need everything, supplies are so limited there. They need things like vitamins, Tylenol and Advil, inhalers, blood supplies. Someone donated thousands of toothbrushes.

“That’s the sad thing, they have toothbrushes, they will brush their teeth, but there are no dentists to provide care. The dentists that went over on the mission went above and beyond the call.”

Other things they needed, according to Lukas, were bandages, lotions, shampoos, soaps, sunscreen, hydrocortisone cream.

A final word Dr. Martirano offered the final comment about the experience.

“The one thing I learned was that the whole thing wasn’t about religion, race or politics, it was about helping people,” he said. “We went to help people, and that’s what we did. We had no agenda, no politics.

“We came back knowing we did the right thing, we did a good thing.”

“As expected, this past week has been an awakening of sorts.

I’ve been managing complex medical issues for refugees; I’ve also been managing my own feelings of guilt knowing that at the end of this week I return to my comfortable home.

Ironically, the patients I’ve treated are so much closer to their homeland than me, but they won’t be able to go home for a much, much longer stretch.

“Today in the camps I was asked to see a 6 month old baby boy with fevers. My colleague Elaine Spirakes examined his brother who was only a year older. Both of us were anxious about our evaluations, relying more on our experiences as mothers than doctors — we last saw pediatric patients many years ago in medical school.

“The babies’ parents smiled reassuringly at us, as it seemed they trusted our medical opinions more than we did. My ever-patient translator Kenan Alhayek also helped alleviate my stress given that his top notch translation skills made it seem that I was speaking directly to the baby’s parents without a language barrier.

“I held the baby’s tiny body, and my mind wandered off to my own experience as a mother of a sick 6 month old.

I remember sitting in Uzma Mohsin Muneer’s office, frantically explaining details of my daughters fever to her.

“I remember the urgency and fear of having a sick baby who couldn’t communicate with me.

I remember praying that her recovery would be quick so that she would feel better sooner.

“It is a true injustice that any parent should have to experience these anxieties with the additional stress of having limited running water, plumbing, electricity, and financial resources to get help.

“In that moment, my heart connected with these young parents who are trying their best to provide for their children when every possible obstacle has been put up to prevent them from doing so.

“Please don’t forget the Syrian refugees and other vulnerable populations around the world.”

Disorderly conduct

May 23 John Tuzak, 25, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for public intoxication at a store in the 100 block of E. First St. at around 9:55 p.m.

Police said officers responded to the above location for a subject who kept falling off his bike. The officers made contact with Tuzak, who related he had drank vodka earlier in the day, according to police.

May 21 Gregory A. Gley, 48, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct in the 300 block of W. St. Charles Road at around 3:52 p.m. Police said Gley became angry when he was blocked into his parking space in the bus lanes of York High School following graduation. He allegedly started yelling at the occupants of the vehicle behind him whom he felt had enough room to move. According to police, Gley began hitting the car and also reached into the victim’s vehicle, knocking the victim’s hands off of the steering wheel in an effort to move the vehicle himself.

May 20 Bernadette A. Knapik, 50; and Tarra C. Djak, 32, both of Elmhurst, were charged with disorderly conduct in the 400 block of Spring Road at around 7:49 p.m. According to police, Djak told police that while she was sitting in the stairwell of her building, her neighbor, Knapik, sprayed something on her and hit her with a bag. Police said Knapik related that she did spray pepper spray on the wall of the stairwell because she was in fear of her neighbor.

Both suspect then reportedly began yelling at each other, using vulgar language.

May 19 According to police, officers responded to the report of a suspect refusing to leave a gas station in the 400 block of N. York at around 11:31 p.m. The suspect was cursing at the victim who works at the gas station for giving her the wrong cigarettes. The suspect was issued a no trespass notice and left the store.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

May 24 A 55-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 1000 block of Riverside Drive at around 12:18 p.m. Police said a victim called and stated that her intoxicated brother battered her.

May 21 A complainant in the 200 block of E. First St. told police at around 6:03 p.m. that she and her boyfriend were involved in a verbal argument and he subsequently locked her out of the apartment. He allowed her back in a short time later. Officers then observed the suspect sitting in his vehicle. He reportedly refused to roll his window down to speak with any officer, and stated: “I plead the fifth.” The complainant related that the suspect got mad and was throwing things in the apartment; he then used his body to push past her to leave the apartment, according to police.

May 18 A 37-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery near St. Charles and York at around 11:33 p.m. A victim told police he was driving the suspect to the hospital when they had a verbal argument. The suspect attempted to take the keys out of the ignition

May 23 William Purnell, 51, of Hillside, was charged with DUI-drugs, leaving the scene of an accident and no valid driver’s license in the 900 block of S. York Road at around 4:20 p.m.

Police said an officer responded to a hit-andrun traffic accident in the parking lot of a supermarket in the area. The vehicle was located and Purnell admitted to taking medication, according to police.

May 22 Sean Iacobellis, 18, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, illegal possession of alcohol by a minor and possession of cannabis near York and Orchard at around 11:54 p.m.

May 21 • Jaclyn Trauscht, 19, of Arlington Heights; and Linnea Sandstrom, 19, of Elmhurst, were issued citations by police for consumption of alcohol by a minor in the 400 block of N. York at around 3:27 a.m. Police said Trauscht and Sandstrom were found walking at the above location, and had been consuming alcohol and were under 21.

• Officers responded to an area near I-290 and York Road at around 9:35 p.m. for a reported DUI driver and vehicle in a ditch. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene. The suspect was later located by officers and turned over to State Police.

May 20 • Fernando Saucedo, 24, of Addison, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Myrtle at around 11:38 p.m.

• Denise Streeter, 43, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, impending traffic and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Grand at around 1:29 a.m.

• Alexander Weber, 24, of Wheaton, was charged with DUI and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Lake at around 2:15 a.m.

May 19 • Jeffrey Bagdon, 35, of Chicago, was charged with DUI drugs, disobeying a stop sign, improper lane usage and an improper turn near York and Cayuga at around 1:10 a.m.

Police said Bagdon was found to be under the

influence of drugs following a traffic stop.

• Blake Mastrodonato, 37, of Palatine, was charged with DUI drugs, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Van Buren at around 11:35 p.m.

May 18 Noah Monahan, 20, of West Linn, Ore., was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor and false use of an ID card subsequent to a traffic stop near Oneida and York at around 10:08 p.m. Police said a reporting officer observed a suspicious vehicle and a traffic stop was conducted. According to police, Monahan was in possession of a fraudulent driver’s license, and also was found to be in possession of alcohol.

Harassment, threats

May 21 A victim in the 200 block of S. Oakland Grove told police at around 7:11 p.m. that her ex-boyfriend has been harassing her by telephone. The victim recently filed a petition for an order of protection against the suspect.

Possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia, controlled substance

May 24 • Michael Grant-Ulrich, 21, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis and issued a no trespass notice at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North Ave. at around 7:15 a.m.

• Emilia Marchan, 29, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and improperly parked on a roadway near York and Third at around 12:45 a.m.

• Alex Mosqueda, 21, of Lockport, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, no valid driver’s license, no insurance and no seat belt subsequent to a seatbelt enforcement checkpoint near York and I-290 at around 12:39 a.m.

May 23 Roque Casas, 35, of Elmhurst, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended and expired registration subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and Lake at around 1:30 a.m. Police said a search of the vehicle yielded cannabis and a cannabis smoking pipe.

May 22 Luis A. Vera, 29, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, tinted windows and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at around 5:11 p.m. Police said two cannabis smoking pipes and one metal grinder were located inside Vera’s vehicle.

May 21 Ivan Calderon, 26, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Wrightwood at around 9:13 a.m.

May 20 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Palmer and Schiller at around 8:13 p.m., Suspect 1 was found to be violating his GDL restrictions by having too many passengers.

Suspect 1 and a passenger, Suspect 2, were also found to be in possession of cannabis.

Suspect 1 was charged with speeding, violation of GDL—too many passengers—and possession of cannabis. Suspect 2 was charged with possession of cannabis. All occupants were released to their parents.

May 19 • Jason Juarez, 18, Kyle Hogan, 18, Brendan Murtaugh, 18, and Julia Battaglia, 19, all of

Elmhurst, were issued citations by police for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Crescent at around 12:32 p.m.

• Harold Melendez, 19, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a suspicious person report in the 200 block of N. York at around 2:50 a.m.

• Joseph Tamas, 22, of Chicago, was issued citations by police for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Riverside at around 12:50 a.m. Police said Tamas also was given a warning for improper use of an electronic communication device and displaying an expired registration sticker.

May 2 Police said officers responded to the 100 block of N. Geneva at around 2:45 a.m. for the report of four suspicious subjects walking with baseball bats. Officers located the subjects and upon further investigation, it was found that they were involved in a criminal damage to property incident that occurred in Villa Park.

Villa Park police responded to the scene and placed two suspects into custody. The other two suspects were released on scene.

May 22 A victim in the 900 block of N. York Road told police at around 7:58 p.m. that two suspects described as Hispanic males were banging on the back door of her fenced-in yard, stating they were from AT&T. The victim stated that she heard what sounded like someone trying to turn the doorknob. The victim spoke with the two suspects who related they were there to fix a loose wire. The victim refused to open the door, sign anything and subsequently called police. One of the suspects was described as being in his 40s, around 6’1”, 200 pounds, wearing a red T-shirt and a tool belt with screwdrivers. The other suspect also was described as being in his 40s with dark hair, around 5’9”, 180 pounds and wearing a yellow T-shirt.

May 21 Police said officers responded to an area near I-290 and York Road at around 9:35 p.m. for a reported DUI driver and vehicle in a ditch. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, but was later located by officers and turned over to State Police.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a meeting on May 23 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven board members attended the meeting.

Public forum brings discussion of class sizes The public comments portion included remarks from six parents who expressed concern about the possibility of increased class sizes at district elementary schools, including Lincoln and Jackson schools. At the end of the public comments segment, Board President Shannon Ebner stated the district’s class sizes are lower than a lot of other school districts. She said the district’s second-grade classes have an average of 21.3 students, while thirdgrade classes have an average of 22.4 students. She said there are a total of 161 sections of kindergarten through fifth-grade in the district. Ebner said about three of those 161 sections are approaching the district’s class-size target. Ebner stated the board and district make every effort to have low class sizes. She said the district would get more respond to parents’ concerns and get more information out regarding the matter.

One more ‘late arrival’ day scheduled, despite strain on families The board voted unanimously to approve the addition of one late arrival day in October, February and April in the district’s elementary and middle schools. The addition will result in two late arrival days in each of those three months. According to District Superintendent Dr. David Moyer, the late arrival days provide time for teachers to work on student growth assessments.

Moyer said the best professional development for teachers is done within the school day.

Board member John McDonough said he wanted to stress the board takes pause before approving the additional late arrival days. Board member Jim Collins said he has frequently heard late arrival days are a burden on families. He asked district staff if something cold be done to accommodate those families.

Wight & Co. to provide feasibility analysis for $50,000 The board voted unanimously to enter into an agreement with Wight & Company for feasibility analysis to explore several potential facilities projects in the district. Wight & Company will conduct the analysis at a fee not to exceed $50,000. If the district selects Wight & Company to provide architecture services for the projects, the firm will credit back 50 percent of the compensation of this agreement.

The district has an established relationship with Wight & Company, which has provided services for renovations at York High School (completed in 2004) and Hawthorne Elementary School (completed in 2008).

A May 4 letter from Wight & Company representatives to Dr. Moyer listed what the firm understood to be seven core objectives in the district’s facility master plans. The district plans to seek community engagement about the objectives in leading up to a potential referendum question on the ballot in early 2018. That question would ask voters to approve the borrowing of bonds to pay for the facility improvements.

The core objectives listed in Wight & Company’s letter to Dr. Moyer included: developing an updated look at replacement options for Lincoln School, developing a refined scope for renovations at Field School, exploring alternate concepts for potential expansion at Edison School and refining the desired scope for improvements to York High School’s auditorium.

Whelton provides update on choosing construction manager Later in the meeting, assistant superintendent for finance and operations Christopher Whelton provided the board with an update on the district’s progress to select a construction manager for the potential facilities projects.

vised the district to move forward with its current construction manager— James McHugh Construction Co. The board also stated the district needed to demonstrate it obtained competitive pricing for construction management services. Whelton said at the May 23 meeting that the district felt conducting a Request for Proposal (RFP) would provide transparency and alleviate any questions about the pricing component.

Whelton said district staff had a mandatory pre-submission meeting with potential construction management firms on May 18. Representatives from 14 companies attended the meeting. Whelton said the district will receive proposals during the week of May 29. The district will narrow down its selections and proceed to conduct one-hour interviews on June 8. District staff will bring a recommendation to the board at its next meeting on June 20.

Salary increase of 1% approved for non-union employees The board voted unanimously during the May 23 meeting to approve a 1-percent salary increase for the district’s non-union employees for the 2017-18 school year. Those employees include the superintendent, administrators, district office support staff, all non-union support staff and all food service employees. All non-union employees reportedly have a floor of a 1-percent salary increase in each school year. There are a few exceptions to the employees who will receive the 1-percent increase; those include four employees who will receive longevity increases of $3,000.

New asst. principal approved The board unanimously approved the hiring of Christina Podraza as assistant principal of Hawthorne and Lincoln Elementary Schools. Dr. Podraza’s hiring has an official start date of Aug. 7, and an annual base salary of about $91,500. Podraza comes to the district from Naperville District 203.

Under my father’s fedora

‘Ever feel like you’ve been someplace before, Some other time, some other war…’

Following is a special Memorial Day column, on the occasion that we remember those who served, especially those who have fallen…

“Something about this place is familiar, but I’m not sure why.”

Those were the words of Rae LaVonne Powell Miller Hughes as she sat in a San Diego restaurant a few years ago with her two grown sons, Bob Miller and Ray Paul Hughes, their wives and the grandchildren.

Sharp as she was in her 80s, it took Rae a few moments to take that mental walk back through the history of her life. (Insert squiggly lines here to indicate the dream-like state leading us all back to… 1944.)

At that time, Rae and her new husband Lieutenant Charles Miller were expecting their first child when the young well-experienced pilot was ordered to ship out and fly missions in the Solomon Islands campaign during WWII. The couple bid farewell at the San Diego U. S. Naval Base, where she watched her handsome husband ride

It’s unknown whether Lt. Miller’s plane went upwards or down on command, but the four planes that did were never seen again. The two planes that had stayed put survived.

Actually, the command leader said later he was able to see one of the planes — who knows which one —

away on a ferryboat to the ship that would take him to the South Pacific.

While it must have been sad, she had to find some comfort in their connection that was the future Robert Charles Miller growing in her belly.

That was the last time she ever saw Lt. Charles Miller.

Several months later, a group of pilots, Lt. Miller among them, flew to Espirito Santo to exchange old planes for newer ones at New Hibrides Island. On their way back to the base, the group of six planes ran into stormy weather. The command leader had one pair fly up overhead and another drop below to look for clearer weather, a standard operating procedure, or SOP, used by Navy pilots during bad weather.

She went on to live a wonderful full life, remarrying and having three more children. Still, Lt. Miller has never been forgotten, least of all by Robert Miller, the son he never knew.

The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on May 22 at the district’s administrative office at 375 W. First Street. All seven commissioners attended the meeting.

Board discusses salary classifications The meeting included a presentation regarding a study of the park district’s salary classification structures.

Director Jim Rogers explained, the district conducted the study to determine the best allocation of its labor dollars. About one year ago, the district selected Northbrook-based GovHR USA to conduct the study, which required all of the district’s full-time employees to fill out a questionnaire. GovHR USA chief executive officer Joellen Earl gave a presentation about the study during the meeting. She noted her firm held meetings and conducted interviews with district employees to gain more information about their positions.

GovHR USA also compiled a salary survey of comparable park districts.

Elmhurst Park District staff members are currently reviewing the information provided in the study.

Got goosebumps? It should be pointed out that the family trip to San Diego and to the restaurant was not planned in any way, like a surprise.

While familiar with the circumstances around Lt. Miller’s disappearance, it dawned on neither Bob nor Ray Paul that any restaurant or anything on their visit would have meaning to their mother. They were not taking her there for that purpose. It was simply a vacation to spend time doing tourist things.

Back to the 1940’s, Rae was living in her hometown of Rockwell City, Iowa, (coincidentally MY hometown!), where she gave birth to Robert Charles Miller in September of 1945. Later, she married Ray E. Hughes — yes, they were Ray and Rae. They had three children of their own, twins Becky and Cathy and their youngest, aptly named Ray Paul. (Side note: Ray Paul named his own daughter Rae Ann.) Ray and Rae’s life-long best friends over the next 50+ years in Rockwell City were Howard and Pauline Longfellow — my parents — who were also married during WWII after meeting at a USO. But that’s another column…

Trane tabbed to replace Courts Plus HVAC units Board members voted unanimously during the meeting to award a contract of nearly $52,000 to Trane to replace two Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) units at Courts Plus.

The two units to be replaced serve Kids Plus on the fitness club’s lower level and Fit 4 Life on the lower level. Both systems are the oldest HVAC units in the building. According to information provided by the park district, each of the two units is about 20 years old and in need of replacement.

The park district board will hold its next regular meeting on June 12.

Summer is just around the corner, which means the Block to Block Party is back and ready to rock. Elmhurst City Centre invites the community to come out every Wednesday night from 5:30 p.m. -8:30 p.m., starting June 7 for free live music and family-friendly fun throughout the downtown.

As fan favorites of the Block to Block Party in years past, member Caleb Widmer is excited for he and his band to return to Elmhurst because of its energetic atmosphere and prime location.

“Our band loves the energy of Block to Block Party concerts brought by families and businesses coming together to enjoy music,” he said. “ The close proximity of places to eat and drink relative to the live music is a huge plus.”

The second band will perform at Elmhurst 255 Plaza at 255 N. York Road, just a short walk up the street from Fountain Plaza. Obituaries DONNIE JO BIDDLE, 80 Donnie Jo Biddle, nee Myers, of Elmhurst, formerly of Glen Ellyn, passed away on May 18, 2017, at the age of 80.

Beloved wife of the late Arthur J.; loving mother of Annie (Mick) O’Dwyer and Marc Kapsalis; grandmother of Marcos, Liam, Caleb and Ella; dear daughter of the late Elwood and Donnie Marguerite Myers.

Donnie Jo was born in 1936 and grew up in Glen Ellyn. She fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a professional dancer and loved telling stories about her time dancing at The Starlight Theater in Kansas

City and her acts with Sammy Davis Jr. and Jimmy Durante at the Chez Paris in Chicago. She later became a dance teacher and taught in Elmhurst and Glen Ellyn for 35 years. She choreographed, prepared the music and sewed many of the costumes and fulfilled another dream by having the Glen Ellyn Symphony perform at her recitals. She was a dedicated member of the Glen Ellyn Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) for 60 years. She loved to sew, kit, spin wool and spent time volunteering at Graue Mill. Her faith was the foundation of how she lived her life.

My teacher is the best because Mrs Michalski isn’t just a teacher she is a role model. She is always making sure we are prepared for 5th grade and is always asking us, “who is responsible for your learning?” My favorite thing that she taught us that, “you need to go slow before you can go fast.” This

Lions Club to host a free picnic for community on Saturday Lions Clubs International is celebrating its 100 year anniversary and the local club is recognizing its 77 years in the Elmhurst community. To celebrate, the Elmhurst Lions Club is showing its gratitude on Saturday, June 3, by hosting a free picnic at the Hub Tent in Berens Park between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Since the club’s chartering in 1940, its members have worked on a variety of projects in the local community, such as $100,000 grant to the Diabetes Center at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, as well as vision and hearing screenings.

Proceeds from past fundraising events have gone to providing Scholarships and Community Service Awards, as well as donations to the Elmhurst College Speech – Language – Hearing Clinic, United Community Concerns, Camp Lions, Leader Dogs, and Spectrios (Deicke Center), plus the Playground for Everyone.

“We are proud of our club’s 77 years of service to the community,” said Jim Worden, Club President.

Museum, Heritage Foundation celebrates poster contest winners

On May 24, the Independent was invited to join a group of participants in the Elmhurst History Museum’s annual Ruth Strand Poster Contest to meet the winners and those who received Honorable Mention.

A total of 329 entries were submitted, all pinned to the walls inside the museum’s Education Center. Posters were judged not only on drawing but also for writing the description of the poster. The winner receives a check for $100 for their school library.

In addition to being called up to the front for recognition, students received gift bags from the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation and schools with ten or more participants received a donation to support their school library. The goodie bags included a gift card to York Theater, their own original poster, an Elmhurst coloring book, a tee-shirt from the Museum and more.

After the presentation, the group retired to the next room for refreshments provided by the Heritage Foundation.

The posters will remain on display at the Elmhurst History Museum throughout the summer and winning entries may be viewed at City Hall after June 5. In addition, the winners will march alongside the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation in the Elmhurst Memorial Day parade. The students will also be recognized at the Elmhurst City Council meeting on June 5.

“I’m looking forward to merging my passion, coaching experience and organizational skills with Elmhurst Park District’s vision so together we can provide a memorable summer,” Adesina said.

Pre-school camp for ages 3-5 Directed by tennis pro Jim Robinson, Preschool Camp for ages 3-5 offers both a morning session from 9-11:30 a.m. and an afternoon session from 12:30-3 p.m. Campers can look forward to a focus on sports and fitness, as well as tennis. This camp begins on June 5 and the fee is $18 for members and $24 for non-members per day.

Fitness Explorers for ages 3-6 Beginning on May 15, Fitness Explorers for ages 3-6 will focus on helping kids discover new ways to stay healthy through games, dance, tumbling and more. The camp meets from 9:30-11:30 a.m. or 12:30-3 p.m. The fee is $25 for members or $27 for non-members per day.

Real Estate/Business City earns AAA bond rating for fourth consecutive year On May 18, the City of Elmhurst was informed that Standard and Poor’s (S&P) Global Ratings assigned the AAA rating to the Series 2017A General Obligation (GO) Bonds and affirmed its AAA rating to the City’s existing GO Bonds. The City’s bonds have been AAA rated by S&P for the 4th consecutive year. The AAA rating is the highest rating assigned to a governmental organization by S&P and reflects the City’s strong economy, powerful budgetary flexibility and performance, and strong liquidity position and management.

This AAA rating is very significant to the City’s ability to both issue new bonds and refinance existing debt at the lowest possible interest rates. The 2017A GO Bonds will refund (refinance) the City’s outstanding Series 2009 GO Bonds with an estimated present value savings of at least $500,000 based on current rates over the next 12 years. In Illinois, only about 30 of 310 rated municipalities have a AAA rating.

More than 240 guests enjoyed food and beverage tastings from 15 Elmhurst businesses, as well as chef demonstrations and music from the Clay Corso Trio. The event raised more than $15,000 for UCCA, an allvolunteer, not-for-profit organization which has been providing food for School District 205 children and their families experiencing difficult times for the past 38 years. With 99% of all funds used to help those in need, last year UCCA delivered almost $86,000 in food and food certificates to more than 300 families and 100 senior residents.

Casandra Townsel is the recipient of this year’s Returning Student Scholarship presented by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Elmhurst Area Branch. The Elmhurst resident was chosen from a pool of 18 applicants. The $3,000 check was presented to her at a dinner held in May at Café Amano, where Casandra expressed her gratitude to the organization.

Currently enrolled in the Master of Arts in Social Work program through the University of North Dakota, Casandra expects to graduate in 2019. Her current classwork is a combination of internet classes via web cams with microphones and mandatory campus visits.

She returned to school after spending 19 years as a caseworker assisting individuals with developmental disabilities and mental illness.

Although she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Northeastern University in 2002, it was a mandatory service project in high school that sparked Casandra’s desire to assist people. She has great respect for the social service industry and takes her job as a caseworker very seriously, relying on the education and training she has received as well as her personal experiences to offer help to those in need.

Casandra is very goal oriented. In her personal statement, she wrote that she has a “growing desire to gain more knowledge and counseling skills to assist others in their varied struggles.” She would like to help those who feel they have been disenfranchised and/or denied their basic human rights.

She is training to become a mentor and ultimately a therapist for victims of human trafficking.

Scholarship funded by annual AAUW Used Book Sale The AAUW Elmhurst Area Branch Returning Student Scholarship is awarded annually to a woman from one of six local communities aged 25 or over who is returning to school to continue her education at the undergraduate or graduate level. It is funded by proceeds from the sale of books at the branch’s annual Used Book Sale. All books, CDs, and DVDs for sale are donated by the community.

IC Catholic Prep softball team wins sectional title Suicide squeeze bunt in seventh proves to be game-winner

Things don’t get much more dramatic than they did recently for the IC Catholic Prep softball team.

The Knights used a suicide-squeeze bunt in the top of the seventh to score the only run of the game in a 1-0 victory over Westmont to win the Class 2A Lisle sectional title.

IC Catholic Prep played in the Class 2A Rosemont supersectional on Monday at Rosemont Stadium against Beecher. If the Knights won they will play in the Class 2A state semifinals this weekend.

It was IC Catholic Prep’s second sectional title in the last three years under coach Frank Reaber.

In that seventh inning, freshman Brooklyn Campos laid down the squeeze bunt that scored a charging Kayla Faber-Cournane with what proved to be the game-winning run.

In the bottom of the seventh, Faber-Cournane got out of a firstand-third, two-out jam by inducing a Westmont batter into popping up to catcher Josie Lytton.

“It was pretty unbelievable,” said Reaber. “I didn’t think we hit as well as we should have. We may have been a little tight offensively, but our defense was very good and Kayla pitched an awesome game. She hit her spots real well and got out of a couple of jams. We had an error early in the game, but she was really good keeping her poise. She had bases loaded and a 3-1 count in one inning and got out of it.”

Reaber’s reasoning for the suicide bunt was simple.

“It’s the seventh inning and we had to get any run we could,” he said. “We wanted to get the run in.

and second and we fake bunted and stole both kids. And then we tried the squeeze. Brooklyn got tagged out but the throw was late and Kaitlyn sild in.”

IC Catholic Prep moved to 21-12 with the win. At one point in the season, the Knights were 4-6.

“We’re playing real well right now,” said Reaber. “In this game, we might have been a little light on the offensive end, but we’ve been swinging the bats really well.”

Reaber pointed out the Knights start seven freshmen or sophomores.

“We have a junior in Josie and one senior in Kaitlyn Falduto,” he said.

“The rest are freshmen and sophomores. A lot of it could have been nerves, but they played very well. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

That’s a big deal.”

The Knights have freshmen Alessandra Eccardt (1B) and Campos (3B) at the corners with sophomore Natalie Murillo at second base and Falduto at shortstop. Lytton is a junior behind the plate, while Faber-Cournane is a sophomore.

“They are so young, but they have played so well,” said Reaber. “We’ve been to the supersectional two years ago and now this year. We can’t complain. Only eight teams are left in Class 2A and we are one of them.”

IC Catholic Prep senior Jordan Rowell wrapped up his high-school sports career by taking second in the long jump at the recent Class 1A state finals meet in Charleston.

Rowell, a Northern Illinois University football recruit, finished second with a leap of 22-9 1/4. The winning jump in Class 1A was 23-5.

Rowell also took eighth in his pre-

liminary heat of the 100 with a time of 13.66. He did not run the 400 at state.

Rowell was part of the 400 relay team that took second in its preliminary heat with a time of 44.18 and did not advance to the finals. Other team members included Luke Ricobene, Lazerick Eatman and Luke Calles.

Close team bond helps IC Catholic Prep girls soccer reach state semifinals

As IC Catholic Prep girls soccer senior co-captain Kaitlyn Grady explains it, there was one word on the team’s mind at the beginning of the season.

“The word was breakthrough,” she said. “Like break through to the state finals. Everybody has been focused on the bigger picture this year.”

And the Knights did just that— they broke through and qualified for the Class 1A state semifinals for the first time in school history.

The Knights finished fourth in the state.

“Everybody knew that over the whole season we had to focus hard,” said Grady. “If we didn’t, we wouldn’t make it to state. We had a lot of talent on the team and we were really motivated to win.”

Grady noticed the team zeroing in on critical factors in its game this season. “We definitely focused more on good passing instead of kick and chase,” she said. “We focused more on finding the open space and working our outside midfielders so they have open crosses.

We had good team drive.”

Fellow senior captain Liz Maloney saw plenty of things in the beginning of the season that indicated a special season may be forthcoming.

“We’ve had great team energy since the beginning of the season,” said Maloney last week. “We have talent and we combined that with positive energy and team unity. We learned to play as a team and not as individuals. We set this goal at the beginning of the season and now we’ve realized it. I always believed we could do it. It’s a great feeling.”

Maloney lauded the efforts of coach Tom Schergen (who recently was promoted to the school’s president position) this season. “He puts everybody in the right position so they could be used to the best of their ability,” she said. “Girls are able to use their talents the best way possible. He’s been unbelievable as a coach. He’s changed the team tremendously. He’s helped us improve as a team. You want to play well for him.”

Senior co-captain Tessa Langan said the trust factor for the team on the field also played a major role in

the success it achieved.

“It’s nice to be able to trust people. I trust that we have a strong defense behind us,” she said. “I know everybody is out there playing their hearts out. That makes it easier to score goals on offense.”

Grady points to the team’s trip to a tournament in Iowa earlier in the season as a key date in its progression.

“I love the bond the team has,” she said. “We’ve very close as a team. The Iowa trip was fun because it helped us bond as a team.

Everybody looks out for each other.

The girls on the bench always are celebrating a good pass. Everybody supports each other. We are a family and that’s something I really like.”

Maloney added: “We make it so fun. It’s not a chore going to practice. We use positive energy and positive vernacular and that’s why we enjoy each other. For instance, Grace Fuller always has something funny to say even when you are at your lowest points or when we are down on ourselves.”

The York baseball team dropped a recent 3-2 decision to Maine West in the Class 4A Niles North regional title game.

York finished the season with a 2311 record.

York led 1-0 after four innings, but Maine West scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good. The two teams combined for eight hits.

Nick Lee went 1-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Ryan Ross had a hit, while Austin Gelsomino had an RBI. Ian Steinorth had a hit. Andrew Deardurff stole two bases. York had four stolen bases as a team.

Gelsomino took the loss. He pitched the first 4 2/3 innings and allowed four hits, while striking out four. Jake Hadawi pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed one hit and had three strikeouts.

York reached the regional final with a 5-4 win over Niles North in the regional semifinals.

The Dukes scored three runs in the

bottom of the seventh inning to win the game. Joey Yaeger drew a bases-loaded walk to end the game. A Ross homer to left opened the scoring in the seventh.

Deardurff had a hit and an RBI. Mike Bernal was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Lee had a hit and an RBI, while Gelosmino had a hit and a run scored.

Joey Chiappetta had a hit and a run scored. Bernal also tripled in the game.

Charlie Pakenas started the game and went the first 4 2/3 innings. He allowed three hits and struck out three.

Hadawi was the winner. He pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed two hits and struck out two.

York softball The York softball team lost 7-2 to Chicago Lane Tech in the Class 4A Niles West regional title game.

Lane scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. York was the No. 3 seed in the Niles North sectional, while Lane was the No. 6 seed.

York was limited to two hits in the game, a double each by Kyra Kroll and Izzy Smith. Katherine Karnatz and Jane Moran each stole a base.

Smith had an RBI. Lauren Wojcik was the losing pitcher. She struck out three in seven innings.

York reached the regional final

after a 19-3 win over Chicago Jones Prep.

The Dukes led only 4-3 heading into the bottom of the second, but proceeded to score 15 runs over the final three innings, including eight runs in the fourth inning. The Dukes had 19 hits.

Sydney Fuglsang went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Moran was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Mia Tran went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI. Kroll was 2-for4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Smith was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Madison Collins was 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI and two walks. Wojcik was 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk. Maria Gentile was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Andrea Meagher was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Karnatz was 2-for-3 with three run scored and an RBI. Jojo Moyer was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored.

Moran had two doubles, while Kroll, Smith, Meagher, Karnatz and Tran each had one double. Kroll and Collins each tripled, while Tran hit a home run. Fuglsang stole two bases.

Hoekstra named Timothy Christian outstanding senior female athlete Finishes career with medal at state track meet

Recent Timothy Christian graduate Olivia Hoekstra went out on top in more ways than one.

Hoekstra, a three-sport athlete, recently capped her track and field career at Timothy by earning a sixthplace medal in the 400 dash at the Class 1A state meet.

She also recently was named the school’s outstanding senior female athlete, joining fellow recent grad Joey Davidson, who won the male version of the award. The Independent will have a story on Davidson’s accomplishments in next week’s paper.

“I was really happy to have won that,” said Hoekstra. “All my hard work paid off. I certainly didn’t expect to win it though. There are so many good athletes at Timothy.”

For a third year in a row, the York girls lacrosse team’s number is eight.

The Dukes made it to the final eight teams in the state, losing 18-6

to perennial Midwest power Loyola Academy in what is considered the state quarterfinals in the IHSWLA. Prior to its game with Loyola, York downed Naperville North for its third sectional championship in a row.

“We played a hard schedule and it really paid off for us in the end,” said York coach Ryan Walz. “I think we had the second-hardest schedule in the state.”

Walz said his team competed well in the game against Loyola. “They have 12 starters all going to Division I colleges,” he pointed out. “And we couldn’t win the draw. We played a great first half defensively, but we were on our heels most of the game.

We couldn’t win the draw because they have probably the best draw specialist in the state who is going to Northwestern. Beating her was a tall task. We worked hard and we battled and we didn’t give up. It was an incredible effort the whole season. Our ultimate goal was getting to the elite eight. A couple of our bigger goals were to beat Montini and get back to that elite eight. We’re happy we did that.”

Earlier, York was a 14-10 winner

on the road against Naperville North in the sectional championship game.

York had lost to Naperville North 13-9 earlier in the year.

The Dukes trailed 2-0 at one point, but after a timeout to regroup, the Dukes scored nine of the next 10 goals to take a 9-3 lead heading into the second half.

York goalie Issy Torres made 17 saves. Seniors Zoe Lawless and Sam Wilson each had four goals and one assist.

“That sectional championship game was a huge turnaround for us,” said Walz. “It was a great victory against a team that had beaten us by four goals earlier in the year.

It was perseverance. We never gave up and worked extremely hard. With

Naperville North, we knew why we beat them. We studied the film and worked on things in practice and had good practices getting ready for them. We fixed the mistakes we made earlier in the year. The girls saw their hard work pay off. When we showed up for that game, we were ready.”

York had a sizable roster turnover this season after graduations from last year’s team.

“These girls worked hard to get back to where we were the previous two seasons,” said Walz. “That is what made this so rewarding. This was one of the most rewarding seasons I’ve ever been involved with.

The girls all came together at the end of the season. We clicked at the right time.”

coaches and the team always is fun.

I did get nervous in meets and practices all the time because I wanted to do well, but the outcome always seemed to end up pretty well. I knew the coaches always would be proud of me no matter what happened.”

Hoekstra said her favorite event in track and field has been the 1,600 relay. “I’m able to compete with my friends and my sister (Valerie) and that makes it less stressful because I have more people to run with and other people to rely on. It’s not just me out there by myself in the 400.”

Hoekstra is a four-time track-andfield state qualifier, having qualified in at least one different event a year.

“When I took sixth this year I ran a PR (personal record) in the prelims and then another one in the fi-

nals at state,” she said. “It was the best way I could have imagined my senior year ending at Timothy and my track career at Timothy.”

Hoekstra said juggling the rigors of three sports with schoolwork never was a chore for her. “It was never very difficult,” she said. “I tried to get a lot done in school during the day and then I would do some stuff at home. You get used to it. My work always got done. There were some late nights, but that comes with it. It was a lot of fun.”

Hoekstra is headed to College of DuPage where she is hoping to run track, “if it all works out,” she said.

After COD, she has her sights set on a four-year school with a dietician degree program.

“I want to find a school with a dietetics program. I’d like to be a

dietician and pair that with personal training,” she said.

Hoekstra said she’s appreciative of her time at Timothy. “It was amazing,” she said. “I’ve always loved the Timothy community. It helped me excel in sports because I had such good friends and teachers who understood how busy we get.

So many people there helped us excel in so many different ways.”

Hoekstra also earned the school’s outstanding band director award.

She played French horn and also was part of the orchestra for the school musical.

“I’m definitely going to miss Timothy, but I think I’m ready for the next step,” she said. “I’ll always come back for my siblings (Valerie, a senior-to-be, and Caleb, a sixthgrader-to-be).”

York boys lacrosse team wins conference for third year in a row addition to retaining the conference crown, York won the York Invitational Tournament Championship and nine players received All-Conference Honors. Junior David Leonard and seniors Pierceson Mapes and Vandenberg were voted to the first team while Redick and junior Mark Schneeloch earned second team honors. In addition, seniors Corey Jaeger, Steve Robertson, Nick Thomas and junior Artie Renier received Honorable Mention status.

“There was a lot of talent on this team,” according to senior Colin Johnson. “They are great players but even better teammates. I’m going to miss these guys.”

Despite the fact that the team will be losing a senior class that includes six players that have signed Letters of Intent to continue their lacrosse careers in college, York expects to field another strong team next season. 15 undergraduates are expected to return to the team and there is a strong group of young players coming up from the junior varsity team

York High School’s Varsity Lacrosse team captured the 2017 West Suburban Championship by earning a 4-1 record in conference play and an 18-5 overall season record. It is the third straight conference championship for the Dukes.

“Entering the season our goal was to complete the back-to-backto-back championship run,” said senior Jack Redick. “We knew that we were gonna have a target on our backs because of the success our program has had over the last few years and that would make it harder on us than before. But we did it.”

The West Suburban Conference includes four of the top 11 teams in the state according to Illinois High School Lacrosse Association’s rankings. “This is a top notch conference, arguably the best in the state,” said senior Gavin Vandenberg. “Yet for three straight years we have dominated conference play which is really an incredible accomplishment.”

York among top schools to win Capitol Hill Challenge Stock Market Game Head to Washington, DC for awards reception on June 21

Students from York High School who participated in the 14th Annual Stock Market Game(TM) - Capital Hill Challenge (TM) have won a trip to Washington DC for an awards reception in their honor on June 21 at the Rayburn House Office Building on Capital Hill. York is one of only ten schools throughout the nation to earn the accolades.

Hosted annually by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) and the SIFMA Foundation, the event involves a 14-week challenge among teams of middle and high school students from across the country, organized by congressional district and state, for the purpose of teaching savings and investing, while promoting a better understanding of the federal government. Teams invest a hypothetical $100,000 in listed stocks, bonds and mutual funds and learn the value of capital markets as they work together to maximize the return of their portfolios.

Jim Borel provided more information to The Independent about the students who participated on York’s teams.

“We have been competing in the Capitol Hill Challenge the last few years,” he said. “Schools are awarded 10 stock teams and we have traditionally split these teams between our Honors Personal Finance course and our Economics club.”

He said this year, four of the 10 teams finished in the top 1% of the 3,939 stock teams participating in the CHC. The second place team in the country consists of York seniors Burke Corcoran, Kevin Lipkin, Mark Leali and junior Jason Kentra, all members of Mrs. Tamra Carl’s economics club.

“Mrs. Carl does a great job with our economics club and should be commended for our second place finish,” Borel said.

Borel will be joining the students on the trip to Washington, DC from June 20-22.

“There is no expense to the district as SIFMA covers all expenses for the trip,” he said. “Last year, we finished in 9th place in the country from a CHC team in the Honors Personal Finance course.

“This a great opportunity for our students to learn investing strategies. The trip is also a great opportunity for our students see our democracy in action.”

The other schools in the top 10 are Montgomery Area High School in Pennsylvania; International Academy in Michigan; South Point High School in North Carolina; Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in New York; Normal Community High School in Illinois; Parkview High School in Georgia; JordanSmall Middle School in Maine; Kinsley Jr/Sr High School in Kansas; and Dinuba High School in California.

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team finishes fourth in state Timothy’s Daniels and Hoogendorn win four matches at state tennis

The IC Catholic Prep girls soccer capped off a record-breaking season by finishing fourth in the state in Class 1A. The Knights lost 9-0 to Quincy Notre Dame in the Class 1A state semifinals at North Central College in Naperville.

IC Catholic Prep then dropped a 5-4 decision in penalty kicks to Johnsburg in the state third-place game.

Abi Wagner scored York’s first goal at the 2:09 mark of the first half. Olivia Hurt had the team’s second goal at 7:43 and Wagner scored again at 36:49 to give the Knights a 3-0 halftime lead.

Johnsburg outscored IC Catholic Prep 4-1 in the second half. Tessa Langan tied the game at 4-4 at the 79:51 mark.

Johnsburg made four of its five penalty kicks, while Langan and Bella Leslie made penalty kicks for IC Catholic Prep.

The Knights had a 16-14 shots advantage and a 12-7 shots-on advantage.

Rochelle Spizzirri and Gabby Smola shared time in goal for the Knights.

IC Catholic Prep finished the season 21-7. It was the Knights second appearance in the state tournament and farthest advancement (state semifinals).

Timothy Christian boys tennis The Timothy Christian boys tennis doubles team of Nathan Daniels and Trevor Hoogendorn had success at the recent Class 1A state finals tournament.

Daniels and Hoogendorn went 4-2 in the doubles tournament and advanced all the way to the consolation bracket quarterfinals.

Daniels and Hoogendorn started the

tournament with a 6-1, 6-0 win over a team from Providence Catholic and then scored a second-round win over a team from Charleston by a count of 6-3, 6-1.

Daniels and Hoogendorn lost 6-2, 6-2 to a team from Chicago University High in the third round.

In the fourth round of the consolation bracket, they downed a team from Fenwick by a 6-3, 6-1 count and won their fifth-round consolation match over Benet Academy by scores of 6-3, 6-2.

Daniels and Hoogendorn lost to a team from Chicago Latin School 6-1, 7-5 in the consolation bracket quarterfinals. They earned six team points for Timothy in the state team standings.

IC Catholic Prep baseball The IC Catholic Prep baseball team lost 2-0 to Chicago Holy Trinity in one semifinal of its own Class 2A IC Catholic Prep sectional held at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

Holy Trinity scored a run in the third inning and one more in the seventh.

Brendan Russ went 2-for-3 for the Knights. Matt Sutton, Austin Reed, Andrew Falduto and Griffen Eichhorn each had a hit. Falduto, Russ and Sutton each had a triple among their offensive production.

Russ took the loss, despite throwing a seven-inning complete game. He allowed only two earned runs and struck out eight, while walking only one.

The Knights reached the sectional after scoring a 6-5 win over Westmont to win the Class 2A Westmont regional title.

The Knights trailed 2-0 after three innings, but tied it with two runs in the fifth and went ahead with four runs in the sixth before holding off a late Westmont rally.

Sutton went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Trey Morris was 2-for-4. Ryan Malek had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. CJ West had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Austin

Reed had a hit, while Eichhorn had two runs scored, a hit and two walks.

Sutton doubled in the game.

Austin Reed pitched the first six innings and allowed only five hits, while striking out nine. West pitched the seventh and struck out three to pick up the save.

The Knights finished the season with a 14-19 overall mark.

York boys volleyball The York boys volleyball team defeated Chicago Latin School 25-18, 25-17 to win the Chicago Latin School regional title.

York reached the regional final with a 25-9, 25-10 win over Chicago Lincoln Park.

York advanced to the River Grove Guerin Prep sectional where it lost 25-

14, 25-21 to Chicago St. Patrick.

The Independent will have more on the York boys volleyball team’s season in next week’s paper.

Timothy Christian softball The Timothy Christian softball team dropped a 15-5 decision to Chicago Academy in a recent Class 2A regional quarterfinal game played at Timothy Christian.

He finished the fourth heat with a time of 44.85 seconds. The junior qualified for the prelims in two other events. He also competed in the 110-meter high hurdles prelims, finishing second in the first heat with a time of :15.76. In the 200-meter dash, he finished with a time of :23.14.

York junior Charlie Kern, (#3287) runs in the finals of the 800-meter run. The junior was the runner-up dashing to a finish time of 1 minute, 54.26 seconds. He was the only York athlete to place in the finals. The three-class, three-day state finals were held at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Field.

Lazerick Eatman (#246) competes in the 800-meter relay at the IHSA State Prelims, which were held at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Field. Eatman teamed with Luke Ricobene, Khalil Sanders and Luke Calles to finish fifth in the fourth heat. They ran a time of 1 minute, 34.06 seconds.
