Rep. Conroy seeks summer interns To provide an opportunity for young people interested in public service to gain experience in government, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, is encouraging local students to apply for a summer internship at her Villa Park office.

“Over the years, our summer interns have provided crucial support to the 46th District office and gained invaluable skills firsthand learning about the legislative process,” Conroy said. “This is a great opportunity for students to develop communication and leadership

skills while building relationships with local leaders and organizers who are doing great work in our community.”

Conroy is seeking motivated high school sophomore and juniors who are able to work five to 10 hours a week from mid-June until mid-August. School District threatening to sue City, Morley says Discusses letter from Board president, urges residents to contact District 205

“There was a misunderstanding or a misinterpretation of the contract,” he said. “We wanted to control those projects for a period of five years solely for the purpose that we could maintain, manicure and make sure that the lawns and the playing surfaces that we turn over are in pristine condition.

“We thought we were doing them a favor by saying we would handle all the maintenance for five years. It never has been our intention to turn over the storm water responsibilities … to the School Board, so there has been a misinterpretation of our last offer.”

Point No. 5 said the City withdrew its proposal to reimburse a portion of the district’s legal and engineering fees.

“That’s true, we agreed to reimburse them up to $35,000,” Morley said. “Well, in the last proposal they sent to us, they asked for an additional half million dollars with no additional benefit to the City. We offered to give them $200,000. We thought that was very generous.”

In a speech that lasted about 10 minutes, Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley firmly and succinctly issued a verbal reply to a letter recently sent to him from District 205 School Board President Kara Caforio about the relationship between the two taxing bodies.

In its May 2 issue, the Elmhurst Independent published the letter from Caforio in its entirety. (It is still available on the web site.) Morley responded at the City Council meeting on Monday, May 6.

He addressed the points in the letter one at a time.

“The first point says, District 205 ‘will not engage in further negotiations with the City for the construction of the City’s storm water projects on district land,’ including Jackson Elementary School and York High School,” Morley began. “[That] means they’re going to stop talking to us about York High School and Jackson [flood mitigation] projects that we’ve been in discussions for as long I’ve been mayor.

He asked them to request two things: 1) remove the threat of legal action from these negotiations; and, 2) ask the School Board to re-open communications with the City of Elmhurst. He especially requested support from the following: 1) To the residents who would be helped by the York and Jackson projects – “and believe me, those residents know who they are;” 2) To the residents who have already been helped by one of the 11 projects that the City has already done successfully, “Don’t leave others behind, the ones who have not been helped;” 3) To the residents who agree that mitigated flooding helps all of our home values; 4) To the residents who voted to pass the recent referendum.

“For at least the last four years, I’ve had a standing offer to the School Board,” Morley said. “Meet with me in public. Meet with me in front of the residents, we’ll discuss our needs,

unless asked for specifically. Their efforts were so passionate and sincere, the “Ban the Straw” policy is now in place at schools throughout District 205.

Local ‘Ban the Straw’ campaign results in district-wide change With a movement to “Ban the Straw,” Emerson Elementary students recognized a need for change in their own school. They created posters, worked to educate fellow classmates, began a petition campaign and contacted district administrators. As a result, plastic straws are now used in Elmhurst D205 lunchrooms only if requested by students.

Members of Emerson Elementary School’s Conservation Club recently led a successful effort to limit straw usage in elementary lunchrooms. Under the direction of Mrs.

Caryl Witt, club sponsor and first grade teacher, students researched the effects that discarded plastics have on the environment and especially the toll on ocean animals.

Straws are not recyclable in most facilities because of their size and degraded plastics are finding their way into the oceans where they are ingested by marine wildlife and then become part of the food chain.

As club member Joaquin Pinedo put it, “Straws are used for seconds and here for centuries.”

One member appreciated how the club’s

efforts are also a global campaign. When on vacation in Florida, Jake Boeckel shared his picture with club members. It was taken next to a restaurant sign urging: “Skip the Straw, Save the Seas.”

As Dr. Seuss’ character the Once-ler stated in the book The Lorax, “UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

These students understand that things must get better and they are making a difference.

Conference focuses on economic outlook for DuPage County Addressing an audience of nearly 700 of the region’s top business and civic leaders, Howard Tullman, executive director of the Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship at the Illinois Institute of Technology, returned as the keynote speaker for the 10th annual DuPage County Regional Business Outlook event on May 1 at the Drury Lane Conference Center in Oak Brook.

Tullman shared his perspective on the implications and risks traditional businesses face as consumers shift focus to “utility and usership,” rather than on “possession and ownership.”

“If you’re standing still, you’re not standing still – you’re actually going backwards,” said Tullman.

“You need to look at your business and think not of how it’s been done in the past, but how it can be done better tomorrow to make the greatest change. Each change accelerates the next change. So, if you’re moving quickly, that’s one measurement; but, the real, significant measurement is how fast you are getting faster.”

Tullman concluded his remarks by reviewing the new ways that constant mobility and ubiquitous connectivity — “the internet of everything” — will change our dayto-day lives and how we interact with each other. More importantly, how our interaction with the machines and robots will increasingly be a larger part of our lives.

age County Board Chairman Dan Cronin opened the event by presenting a DuPage County economic outlook. Sharing highlights from the first quarter of 2019, Cronin noted DuPage County’s continued pattern of economic sustainability and consistent growth.

“At just 3.2 percent, DuPage County’s unemployment rate is the lowest in the region and second lowest in the state,” said Cronin.

“We create a business-friendly culture in the county resulting in persistent, steady industry growth and low office and industrial vacancies.

We are driving development and heightening the county’s status at the forefront of Illinois’ suburban economies.”

date, Cresset Founding Partner and CIO Jack Ablin provided an economic market outlook for Illinois and the national landscape. While detailing his views on the practice and study of economics—from taxes to social trends in spending and saving—he explained, we are starting to see policy makers moving communities.

“Economic pendulums can only swing so far in one direction until we go too far. That creates a social pushback and then the pendulum is going to swing the other way.”

May 1 A victim in the 600 block of W. North told police at around 3:29 p.m. that while working out, the suspect bumped into him and a verbal argument ensued. The victim approached the suspect who subsequently shoved him. The victim approached the suspect a second time and the suspect punched him in the face. The victim was not injured and did not wish to sign complaints.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass, criminal defacement April 28 A victim in the 400 block of S. West told police at around 7:25 p.m. that scratch marks had been made on the passenger side of his vehicle. The victim believes these marks were made intentionally while the car was parked in his driveway.

April 27-April 28 A victim in the 900 block of S. Hawthorne told police that an unknown suspect(s) damaged the windshield of her vehicle while it was parked in her driveway sometime between the above dates. The reporting officer inspected the damage and determined it was not criminal in nature.

April 26 Cinque Grant, 28, of Bensenville, was charged with criminal trespass to property in the 100 block of S. York at around 9:35 p.m.

April 11-April 25 A city of Elmhurst employee told police of finding criminal defacement on the pumping station building.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disturbance April 27 A 46-year-old Chicago man was charged with two counts of domestic battery, obstructing identification, interfering with the reporting of a domestic battery and possession of open alcohol in the 400 block of W. Lake at around 11:31 p.m. According to police, the victim stated that the suspect choked her, pushed her against a wall, and attempted to take her phone as she dialed 911.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication April 27 Police said subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 1:08 a.m., Dehiana Casilias, 22, of Elgin, was issued a citation for illegal transportation of

April 25 Sebastian Munoz, 20, of Steger, was charged with DUI, consumption of alcohol by a minor, no valid driver’s license, expired registration and no insurance, while Jawan C. Gaines, 21, of Villa Park, was charged with violation of bail bond and resisting arrest subsequent to a traffic stop near Ridgeland and North at around 12:31 a.m. Police said while speaking to Munoz, Gaines fled the scene on foot.

Harassment, threats April 29 A victim in the 700 block of Fairview advised at 3:55 p.m. that for several months he has been receiving phone calls from a company soliciting his business. On the above date, he received six calls from the same solicitor.

A complainant in the 100 block of W. Third told police at around 5:49 p.m. that the suspect called to speak with an employee. When the suspect was advised the employee was not available, the suspect became upset and made threatening statements. The reporting officer advised the suspect that the statements he made alarmed the staff and he was not to go to the business.

Liquor law violation April 27 Police said information was received at around 9:10 p.m. that the Sakana Japanese Restaurant was selling alcohol without a City of Elmhurst liquor license. It was verified that the business was selling alcohol without a license, according to police. The information is being forwarded to the Liquor Commission.

Guerrero, 23, of Franklin Park, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and York at around 11:31 p.m.

April 28 Brigit Holt, 40, of Godfrey, Ill., was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of cannabis (over 100 grams) subsequent to a suspicious auto investigation in the 600 block of W. North at around 4:08 a.m.

Police said the suspect was found to be in possession of Xanax®, controlled substance pills and a large amount of various cannabis infused products.

April 27 Natalie Brown, 35, of Villa Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 2:02 a.m.

Deonte Fentress, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and one tail light subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 11:05 p.m.

Matthew Garza, 29, of Chicago, was charged with felony unlawful possession of a controlled substance subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 1:04 a.m. Police said Garza was found to be in possession of cannabis and Alprazolam pills without a prescription.

Steven Otero-Cabrera, 25, of Cicero, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and expired registration subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 2 a.m.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery May 1 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at around 5:45 p.m.

A complainant told police that she observed three suspects exit the store with eight large candles and one gift basket. Police said the suspects fled the area northbound on Route 83 in a silver Nissan Muran. One suspect was described as a black male in his late 20s with a thin build and a short afro, having an odor of cannabis. The second suspect was described as a black female in her late 20s, around 5’7” with a medium build and a ponytail. The third suspect was described as a black female in her late 20s.

April 30 Maggie El Cadi, 28, of Lombard, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 2:30 p.m. According to police, a complainant related that El Cadi paid for some items, but concealed clothing items and exited past the last point of sale.

David D. Wilson, 33, of Maywood, was charged with burglary and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon at a hotel in the

900 block of S. Riverside at around 11:32 a.m.

According to police, a complainant related that Wilson disregarded hotel policy and subsequently forfeited his security deposit. Wilson allegedly stole three lamps from a hotel room and told the hotel staff that he would return the lamps after the hotel returned the security deposit. Police said Wilson returned to the hotel and admitted that he took the lamps.

He also was found to be a felon in possession of brass knuckles, police said.

April 26-April 30 Forgery was reported at a business in the 900 block of N. Larch sometime between the above dates. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect stole several envelopes of outgoing mail. Several days later, the company was advised by its bank that two of the company’s checks had been forged and cashed.

April 26 Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of N. Elm at around 3:45 p.m. A reporting officer spoke to a victim who stated she gave personal information over the phone to an unknown suspect claiming to be with Apple® support.

Identity theft was reported in the 600 block of Comstock at around 2:30 p.m. A victim told police that she discovered two unauthorized purchases made on her credit card. One transaction was for an Airbnb Rental in California and another was for what she believed to be a computer purchase. The victim contacted her bank and reported the fraudulent transactions.

April 25-April 26 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of W. Armitage. A victim told police that an unknown suspect made two unauthorized purchases on her credit card sometime between the above dates. The victim has the physical card in her possession. The victim contacted bank to report the fraud.

April 25 Jeremy Redmond, 21, of Bellwood, was issued a no trespass order prohibiting him from returning to a store in the 100 block of E. Butterfield and also issued a citation for driving while license suspended at around 5:59 p.m.

Police said an employee at the store, a cigar store, told police that Redmond allegedly stole a cigarette snuffer. Police said Redmond left the store driving a grey Nissan. The reporting officer located Redmond at his residence, and Redmond admitted to the theft, according to police. Police said Redmond returned the alleged stolen merchandise.

Identity theft was reported in the 900 block of N. Virginia Lane at around 7:19 a.m. A victim told police that he erroneously provided personal information in response to a fraudulent email. The victim did not provide any credit card information and there is no financial loss at this time. Police said a victim in the 400 block of S. Holly at around 2:18 p.m. contacted his financial institutions to activate fraud alerts on his accounts. A reporting officer spoke to the victim who stated a package had been taken from his front porch.

The victim stated while reviewing home security footage, he observed a man holding a package approach the front porch. The man scanned the package and then returned to his vehicle with the package still in hand. The victim reported the incident to Amazon, which stated it will conduct an internal investigation.

Lombard couple accused of using charitable funds for personal use

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Wheaton Chief of Police William Murphy announced today that bond has been set for a Lombard couple charged with stealing funds from a not-for-profit agency intended to aid United States veterans. Todd Olshefski, 50, and his wife Priscilla, 60, appeared at a bond hearing on the morning of Friday, May 3 where Judge George Bakalis set bond at $10,000 with 10% to apply for both defendants. Each defendant has been

charged with one count of Unlawful Use of Charitable Funds, a Class 2 Felony. At approximately 2 p.m., Thursday, May 2, the Olshefskis were taken into custody and charged after failing to appear in court on an unrelated matter.

The charges against the Olshefskis stem from a ten-month investigation, conducted by the Wheaton Police Department and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, into reports of the couple’s aggressive solicitation tac-

tics and alleged use of intimidation.

There were also concerns surrounding the legitimacy of the agency created by the Olshefskis, known as the Veterans Christian Network (VCN), as a not-for-profit organization. It is alleged that the funds solicited by the defendants and donated to the VCN were being used by the Olshefskis to pay personal expenses including rent, car payments, insurance and a veterinary bill for their dog, among other things.

“What Todd and Priscilla Olshefski are accused of doing is absolutely deplorable,” Berlin said. “The residents of DuPage County have shown time and time again their generous spirit and it is certainly a shame when people take advantage of that spirit for their own personal gain, as alleged in this case.”

“The public should be reminded to be prudent when making charitable donations and should educate themselves about the organizations they

support before donating,” Murphy said. “I would also urge the public to contact their local police department should solicitors become aggressive, obstruct traffic or appear illegitimate.”

The next court date for both defendants is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22, for arraignment in front of Judge Bakalis.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt.

Addison men charged following DEA investigation

Late last week, the Independent learned that two Addison men had been charged with possession of about one kilogram of heroin as a result of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) investigation.

release issued by the office of Robert Berlin, Du Page County State’s Attorney.

According to the release, the DEA executed a search warrant at a used car dealership owned by Cardenas in Addison and discovered about a kilogram of heroin inside one of the vehicles on the lot. Ortiz, who is an employee of the dealership, and Cardenas were arrested, prosecutors said, following a brief foot chase.

“In 2018, more than half of the 98 opioid deaths in DuPage County were heroin related,” Du Page County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “One kilogram of heroin

April 23 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of W. St. Charles at around 9:54 a.m. Police said a reporting officer spoke to the complainant who stated an unknown suspect had stolen her wallet while she was in Chicago.

She reported the incident to the Chicago Police Department. Her wallet contained her credit card and driver’s license, which were later used by an unknown subject in an attempt to withdraw money from her account at a bank in Elmhurst.

Feb. 26 Theft was reported in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 2:45 p.m. Police said a reporting officer spoke to the victim who stated she placed her purse in a shopping cart.

When she went to pay for her merchandise, an unknown suspect stole her purse from the shopping cart.

Feb. 21 A complainant in the 300 block of W. Grand came into the police station at around 12:32 p.m. and reported that the suspects fraudulently forged a vehicle loan using the victim’s personal information and signature. An investigation is pending.

Warrant arrest

May 1 Police said Frank Lopez, 25, of Elmhurst, was arrested on a warrant and also was found to be in possession of cocaine subsequent to a warrant service for the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office in the 100 block of

N. Hampshire at around 7:03 p.m.

He also was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

April 30 Police said Piespa Sherifi, 24, of Elmhurst, was found to have an active warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office subsequent to a traffic stop in the 900 block of N. York at around 5:58 p.m. Sherifi also was issued citations for tinted windows and no seat belt.

April 29 Police said that subsequent to a dispatch for a verbal domestic in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 3:18 a.m., the victim refused to speak with officers. The suspect involved, DiQuoine Wells, 25, of Elmhurst, was later located, according to police. Police said Wells provided a false name and resisted officers. It was later learned Wells had a valid warrant out of Wisconsin, according to police. Wells was charged with being a fugitive from justice, resisting a police officer and obstruction of identification.

April 27 Police said Mark C. Dickey Jr., 33, of Elmhurst, who was wanted out of DuPage and Cook counties, was located and taken into custody subsequent to a traffic stop in the 100 block of Bonnie Brae at around 8:31 p.m. Dickey Jr. also was charged with driving while license suspended.

April 26 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Highland at around 7:59 p.m., Rosario Latsonas, 23, of Westmont, was found to have a valid warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. He also was charged with tinted windows.

Spring in the backyard

I spotted the first one out of the corner of my eye, just outside the kitchen window. A bunny! And then there were two of them. Hopping in the yard and eating grass.

They were brown with white tails.

Nothing fancy, just common gardenvariety bunnies, but I marveled at they way they blended in with the still-brown grass and patches of white snow not yet melted from winter. They served as a true demonstration of nature’s perfect camouflage right there in my own backyard.

It turns out there’s more than camouflage working in the color of their body (and tail) fur. Researchers believe that the white tail evolved as a way to confuse predators that give chase. These predators focus on the white tail. As Mr. Rabbit darts back and forth the white tail flashes in and out of sight, confusing said predator and giving our friend, the bunny, an advantage. Sounds good to me. I’ve always had a soft spot for bunnies.

The rabbits in my yard weren’t worried about predators. They seemed focused on eating.

That, and doing the thing that rabbits do best: making more rabbits.

One rabbit – the bigger of the two and probably the female – took a hop toward her counterpart. He leapt backwards high in the air – or at least high for a twitterpated bunny.

It happened again. And again. In the midst of this curious backward hopping dance, they took a break and stood nose to nose.

It looked like they were kissing, but I realize they were more likely sniffing each other out. They stayed locked in this stance for a few seconds before the smaller bunny took another leap backwards, apparently demonstrating his extreme hopping aptitude and vertical prowess to his soon-to-be bride and mother of his children (not necessarily in that order).

He took about ten10 hops away before turning to the female. She hopped in the opposite direction. An attempt at coyness to be sure.

Not to be outdone, he ignored her for a while, eating brown grass. She used her back leg to scratch her ear.

He looked at her, twitched his nose and used his front paws to wash his face. I feared we might be at an impasse. Perhaps no baby bunnies would be made today.

Or maybe they would. The bunnies in the yard continued their unique mating, hopping, dancing ritual. At first, their interaction piqued my curiosity. I’d never seen rabbits interact in such a manner. I was glued to the kitchen window.

But after a few minutes, I began to feel like a voyeur – infringing on what they surely thought was a private, not to mention intimate, backyard moment.

At what point does watching bunnies get weird and perhaps a little creepy?

I decided I didn’t want to go there, so I left the window and let bunnies be bunnies. If they are like most rabbits, they’re probably growing a half a dozen or so baby bunnies that will be born soon enough. Rabbit gestation is between 30 and 33 days, with another three weeks spent in the nest before they are ready to romp in the yard on their own.

Which means in a couple of months my yard could be littered with bunnies – literally. Now that would be something worth watching. Hashtag cuteness overload.

Ten years ago, I always felt compelled to think ahead and try to know what was around the bend.

Right now, I realize that we don’t always know, we don’t have to know, and the view can be more

spectacular than ever imagined.

Ten years ago, I had an inkling that I could be truly happy. Right now, hell yes.

Ten years ago, I was knowing that my forties would be an amazing decade. Right now, ditto for my fifties.

There is nothing wrong with making plans. I still make them (this Italy trip has been on the books for months). The difference is in trying to control life versus allowing life to surprise me.

Ten years ago, I didn’t understand that Life doesn’t need me to control it.

Ten years ago, I didn’t realize Life could be so magnificent. Every single day.

Ten years ago, I didn’t know I could love my gray hair, and savor scallops and Brussels sprouts.

That’s the thing about Life. It holds wonder at every turn.

I still fall back into pondering the future, but not in such a worrisome way. As my Prince and I contemplate (early) retirement, I wonder about many things and sometimes try to see too far into the future. My dear man reminds me that ten years ago, we had not met.

We had no idea how life would turn out and it’s pretty darn good.

Two years ago, we had no clue that we would be in our current home. One year ago, we didn’t imagine some of the possibilities we now live. One month ago, I didn’t

know some things I now see as obvious.

Old dogs/humans can keep learning new tricks.

My crystal ball is for sale, if you want it. It’s pretty and sparks curiosity. Hit me up if you want it. I don’t need to see too far ahead. This notion of living and loving full out, one day at a time, is working well.

It seems to be the way to carve out a lovely future too.

Ten years ago, I was facing the unknown. Right now, I still am. We always are, in a way. And now, that is just fine with me.

Graduated tax amendment moves to House

Republicans remain unanimously opposed; Pritzker pitches plan to businesses

A graduated income tax amendment is on the move at the Illinois State Capitol.

On a busy day May 1, Senate Democrats advanced the proposal, House Republicans held a news conference bashing it, and Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker addressed two organizations composed of members who are vocally opposed to it.

Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 1, which would allow the placement of a graduated tax question on the November 2020 general election ballot, passed with support from all 40 Senate Democrats and no Republicans.

Senate Minority Leader Bill Brady, a Bloomington Republican, said his caucus opposed the graduated tax because the current mandated flat tax structure protects the middle class.

“I believe the crafters of our current Constitution, which included a flat tax and was embraced by the people of Illinois, designed it specifically to protect middle-income families from politicians,” Brady said.

Oak Park Democratic Sen. Don Harmon, SJRCA 1’s sponsor, said the flat tax, which is currently 4.95 percent on all Illinoisans, does the opposite.

“You are protecting the uber rich, not the middle class,” Harmon said.

A graduated tax would allow the state to impose higher rates on greater margins of income.

Senate Bill 687, carried by Olym-

pia Fields Democrat Toi Hutchinson, contains the rate structure which would go into effect should the constitutional amendment become law.

It passed with votes from 36 Democrats.

“The people who have been hit the most and the hardest with lack of opportunity and the loss of the services we all rely on, are the folks that everyone keeps saying we need to stand up and we need to protect,” Hutchinson said. “So far this is the only plan that does that. There is no other plan on the table to deal with $3.4 billion of a structural deficit that we all know we have.”

Per the bill, single filers would pay the maximum rate of 7.99 percent on all income once their taxable income tops $750,000. For joint filers, that rate takes effect once income tops $1 million.

For joint filers outside of the top brackets, the rates in the Senate plan are 4.75 percent on taxable income from $0 to $10,000; 4.9 percent from $10,001 to $100,000; 4.95 percent from $100,001 to $250,000; 7.75 percent from $250,001 to $500,000; and 7.85 percent from $500,001 to $1 million.

For single filers, tax rates are the same as joint filers up to $250,000; but the 7.75 percent rate applies from $250,001 only to $350,000, while the 7.85 percent rate applies from $350,001 to $750,000.

The bill also includes an increase in the property tax credit from 5 percent to 6 percent, and a $100 perchild tax credit for couples earning less than $100,000 and single persons earning less than $80,000.

But Republicans, including Jason Barickman of Bloomington and Dale Righter of Mattoon, said there is no guarantee the rates provided in this plan will stay as advertised for any period of time.

Righter said other states with graduated tax structures have raised the top rate 24 times over the past 20 years and on several occasions the income threshold necessary to meet the top rate has dipped below $100,000.

“We should not make it easier to raise taxes,” Righter said. “The national experience comparing flat tax rates and graduated tax rates teaches us this will make it easier to do just that.”

But Hutchinson said the threshold to raise taxes will remain the same as it was before the amendment, and a state-by-state comparison does not adequately sum up Illinois’ situation. She said the “hollowing out of state government” has affected lower-income earners while the flat tax “worked just fine” for the wealthiest Illinoisans, who are trying to protect it.

Her bill also increases by $100 million the state’s investment in local governments and raises the corporate tax rate from 7 percent to 7.99 percent, with an existing corporate replacement tax up to 2.5 percent applying to businesses, making the top corporate rate 10.49 percent.

Senate Bill 690, carried by Democrat Andy Manar of Bunker Hill, and Senate Bill 689, carried by Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) passed as part of the package as well.

SB 690 would provide for a property tax freeze on school districts if the state meets approximately $650 million in annual K-12 education spending starting in 2021. The freeze would exclude levies for debt and pensions. SB 689 would eliminate Illinois’ estate tax which currently applies to estates exceeding $4 million.

Former U.S. transportation secretary backs state gas tax hike Peoria Republican LaHood says state investment needed for economic growth

A high-profile Republican recently gave his support to an increase to the state’s gas tax during a meeting of a special Senate capital committee.

Ray LaHood, a Peoria Republican who served from 1995 to 2009 in Illinois’ 18th congressional district before serving as secretary of transportation under President Barack Obama, said an infrastructure bill is also a “jobs bill and an economic development bill.”

In his testimony at the Michael A. Bilandic Building in Chicago, LaHood sounded similar alarms to those who spoke at five previous meetings of the committee.

“My focus is on the fact that Illinois is one big pothole right now,” LaHood said. “We’ve had these brutal winters, and people are complaining about potholes. And I believe that if the General Assembly raised the gas tax and fixed up the roads and bridges, people would be very happy.”

The infrastructure shortfall is also a safety risk, many testified.

Dave Bender, president and CEO of the American Council of Engineering Companies-Illinois, said 45 percent of the state’s bridges are at least 50 years old, and most have a life expectancy of just 50 to 60 years.

James Derwinski, executive director of Metra Rail, said half of the rail line’s bridges were installed more than 100 years ago, and the oldest Metra car in use today was built in 1953.

Bender said the state’s road and bridge infrastructure is in such bad shape because nearly 90 percent of it is federally funded, while the state

chipped in just 4 percent in 2016.

The federal contribution is in danger of shrinking, he said, if Illinois continues to fail to meet federal matching guidelines by billions of dollars.

LaHood said nearly 30 states have taken local action to raise their gas taxes in recent years, including several Republican-controlled states. He said Illinois has one of the lowest rates in the nation for a gas tax at a time when fuel purchases are shrinking due to an increase in fuel efficiency and electric vehicles.

The fact that the state has a “lock box” amendment for motor fuel tax which permits its use only for safety of roads and bridges is beneficial for the transparency of the process, LaHood said. He also said any legislation increasing the gas tax should include provisions to raise the gas tax along with the rate of inflation.

State Sen. Martin Sandoval, a Chicago Democrat and Transportation Committee chair, said his Senate Bill 103 includes such a provi-

sion. That bill would raise the gas tax from 19 cents to 38 cents, along with raising automobile registration fees, including those for electric cars.

Another bill, House Bill 3823 carried by Rep. Andre Thapedi (D-Chicago) and backed by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, would increase the gas tax even further while phasing out the sales tax on motor fuel among other wide-ranging changes.

Sandoval said his bill has only one co-sponsor—another Democrat.

LaHood and Tom Oakley, a former newspaper publisher in Quincy, told the committee they would help lobby for an infrastructure bill.

“What you have today, Mr. Chairman and members of the committee, are two Republicans from downstate Illinois who are promoting to fix up our infrastructure and raise the gas tax to do it,” LaHood said.

LaHood’s testimony was followed by eight panels of speakers

requesting added infrastructure spending that would benefit their varying organizations, businesses, agencies and boards. Those representatives were from transportation agencies, port authorities, higher education institutions, environmental organizations, pedestrian and bicycling advocates and other groups.

Mary Sue Barrett of the Metropolitan Planning Council—an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization focused on regional growth—said those debating infrastructure spending often ask the wrong questions.

“First, we have to ask what’s the cost of inaction,” she said.

LaHood said the cost is investment in Illinois.

“When companies look at Illinois to do business, they look at infrastructure first, and then a number of other things after that. Without good infrastructure, we are not going to be able to keep businesses and attract businesses,” LaHood said.

Lawmakers, university officials warn of higher education cuts without new revenue

Democrats in the Illinois House, along with officials from each of the state’s public universities, warned on May 1 that unless the state finds new sources of revenue, there likely will have to be funding cuts to higher education in the upcoming budget year.

“For years, our universities have been unfairly treated as their state has decreased funding to the universities,” Rep. LaShawn Ford, a Chicago Democrat and chairman of the House higher education budget committee, said during a Statehouse news conference. “Last year’s funding level is not adequate enough, and as we go through the budget, we learn that the revenue to meet (the fiscal year 2019) level is not there.”

Ford said state funding for higher education peaked in 2002 around $2.4 billion. For the current budget year, the state is expected to spend only about $1.8 billion, roughly 25 percent less than it spent 17 years ago.

Ford was joined in the news conference by officials from each of the state’s public universities, as well as other members of the higher education budget committee.

President Elaine Maimon of Governors State University, which serves a large population of first-generation students, students of color, and military veterans, said colleges and universities were hit especially hard during the two-year budget impasse of 2015 to 2017 because the state was not under any legal or court-mandated obligation to fund higher education.

As a result, she said, during the 2015-2016 budget year, colleges and universities received no appropriations until April 2016, and even then received only about 30 percent of their normal funding. She said that resulted in significant cuts in university programs and services.

Barbara Wilson, executive vice president of the University of Illinois system, said further cuts in higher education funding would have a big impact on the state’s largest university.

“Across the U of I system we are educating 52 percent of the students who go to public institutions in this state,” Wilson said. “So I always say, if you hurt U of I, you’re hurting a big chunk of the students and families in the state.”

In his budget proposal, Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker called for a 5 percent, or $52.2 million, increase in state funding for public colleges and universities. He also

proposed increases in various kinds of state-funded student financial aid.

But Pritzker’s budget plan hinges on lawmakers approving a number of new taxes and revenue streams, including licensing fees for the sale and production of legalized marijuana, and new revenues from legalized sports betting, both of which could have a direct impact on college and university campuses.

“What I do know is that the University of Illinois and their think tank is providing a study of various revenue options,” Governors State University’s Maimon said in a separate interview after the news conference.

“It should be out in the next week or so. We are looking forward to that.”

No sure bets yet among plans for bill legalizing sports gambling in Illinois

With five plans being considered, it’s anyone guess what legalized sports gambling will look like in Illinois if the Legislature approves a bill this spring.

One element of several of those plans might not yet be a safe bet. The

Testimony from the hearings will be used to reconcile the plans proposed in Rep. Michael Zalewski’s (D-Riverside) holder bill, House Bill 3308.

The proposed licensing fee would be paid by sports betting operators, such as casinos, racetracks or online platforms.

“If the licensing fee is too high, it’s going to prohibit people from entering the market,” said Robert Davidman, a marketing professional, who has helped launch several online gaming businesses in New Jersey, widely considered to have the most comprehensive sports betting system of any state.

Davidman said fees that other states are considering, $100,000 in Indiana and $45,000 in Iowa, are better.

Pennsylvania, where the fee is $10 million, has not sold all of its available licenses, Davidman said.

A safer bet among the proposals might be the allowance of mobile betting.

“Mobile sports wagering is not only the future, it’s the now,” said Jake Williams of iDEA Growth, a not-for-profit sports betting association.

He said mobile betting accounts for roughly 80 percent of New Jersey sports wagers.

Zalewski, who is the subcommittee chairman, agreed.

“We’ve become aware that states that don’t have a mobile piece don’t fare very well,” he said.

That is bad news for one of the state’s proposed plans, which would have sports betting overseen by the Illinois Lottery without any online component.

Then, there is the question of which sports to include.

Larry Lyons, athletics director at Illinois State University, spoke on behalf of most of the state’s 13 schools with Division I athletics.

“We are in agreement that we oppose legalized gambling on college sports,” he said, because it brings bettors too close to young athletes who are still maturing.

But others said there still would be illegal gambling on college sports if they are not included in the bill.

One emerging sport that could be included is electronic gaming, or eSports competitions for games like DOTA II, League of Legends and Fortnite.

Bob Greenlee of eSports company Tusk Strategies argued that eSports are more popular and professional than many people think.

Arguably the nation’s best Fortnite player, Illinois resident “Ninja” Blevins, made as much as $10 million in sponsorships last year.

A 2018 League of Legends tournament, meanwhile, attracted 205 million live viewers, compared to just more than 100 million viewers of the Super Bowl that year. “eSports is a real thing,” said Margo McDermed (R-Mokena), adding that she learned about it recently while

on Netflix.

“I hadn’t really considered it as something Illinois should include in our future gaming, but perhaps we should,” she said.

Greenlee said a company analysis puts state tax revenue from eSports betting alone at $18 million a year.

Also at Thursday’s hearing, Grace Hou, head of the state’s Department of Human Services, said next year the department needs almost double its historical budget of $1 million for gambling addiction services, but not because of sports betting.

“People often struggle with turning themselves in, so we need more marketing and outreach,” Hou said.

But Anita Bedell, executive director of Illinois Church Action on Alcohol and Addiction problems, said legalizing sports betting will only increase addiction.

“Rather than address the problem, you want to make it worse by putting it on phones,” Bedell told lawmakers.

No date has been set for the subcommittee’s next hearing on sports gambling.

• Marijuana bill entirely under state law, even though it remains a criminal offense under federal law. Pritzker’s proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year includes $170 million in new revenue from licensing cultivators and dispensaries.

Steans said a number of different “working groups” have been meeting to hammer out details of different aspects of the legislation. Those are thought to include such things as how many new licenses will become available for cultivation and retail sales; how much those licenses will cost, and how they will be allocated; and limits on how much marijuana an individual could possess for personal use.

Some early proposals have called for setting aside half or more of the new licenses for people who live in predominantly black, Hispanic and Native American neighborhoods, which supporters argue have suffered disproportionate negative impacts from the war on drugs.

Steans said the proposal likely to be unveiled this week also will include a provision allowing individuals to cultivate a certain number of plants in their own homes for personal use.

The idea of complete legalization of adult recreational marijuana faces significant opposition from a number of religious organizations as well as some of Steans’ fellow legislators.

“If you legalize it, usage is going to go up. That’s been the experience of all the other states that have done this,” Sen. Dale Righter, a Mattoon Republican, said in an interview. “When usage goes up, abuse will go up, and there will be more people landing on the doorsteps of drug treatment providers across this state—drug treatment providers who will tell you we have more people than we can serve and we do not have enough money.”

Steans, meanwhile, said she was cautiously optimistic a legalization bill can pass.

“I never like to presume how folks are going to vote,” she said.

“But yes, we’ve been working with lots of the members from various caucuses, hoping to get something we think is reasonable.”

History Museum offers thrill ride through Chicago’s amusement park history “The [amusement] park was not founded for the culture of decorum; it was founded for the culture of wild hilarity, in which mission it brilliantly and gloriously succeeds.”

—Rollin Lynde Hartt, Atlantic Monthly, May 1907 For most kids who grew up in the Chicago area in the mid to late 20th century, there was one ritual like no other that was the most-anticipated event of the summer: a trip to a local amusement park. The sights and

sounds—all neon lights and screeching wheels on metal—filled the senses with awe, anticipation, and a dash of fear as park visitors stepped up to the ticket booth for that essential roll of paper stubs that was a passport to fun and adventure.

Whether it was a pilgrimage to Riverview, the mother of all Chicago parks on the north side of the city, for a daring drop on the Pair-O-Chutes, or a trip to a more family-focused suburban park like Kiddieland or Santa’s

Village—the thrills and chills experienced were a memorable part of growing up. A warm summer night spent at an amusement park was like an instant vacation.

But where did Chicago-area amusement parks begin, and who created all those zany rides, roller coasters, and side shows to entertain the masses?

The Elmhurst History Museum sheds light on the subject in a new exhibit, “Worlds of Wonder: Remembering Chicagoland’s Amusement Parks,”

Exhibit themes and interactives “Worlds of Wonder” celebrates the early Chicago trolley parks as well as more modern suburban attractions.

Visitors will learn about the signature rides and iconic venues that evolved over the years through rare photos, video, memorabilia, amusement park artifacts, and hands-on interactives.

Museum patrons will enter the exhibit through an authentic turnstile and experience various themed sections exploring topics such as: the influence of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and the first Ferris Wheel, early 1900s parks, a history of carousels, and the evolution of various types of rides from roller coasters to chutes.

Four popular amusement parks will be highlighted including Kiddieland, Dispensa’s Kiddie Kingdom, Riverview, and Santa’s Village.

The exhibit will have inter-generational appeal for kids of all ages with many interactive displays including: • A full-size Skee-Ball game; • A station where patrons can design their own marble run to simulate the

physics of roller coasters; • Fun house mirrors; • A virtual roller coaster experience where users have a view from the front car of various coasters from the past; and, • A photo booth with printable photos to take home.

Amusement Park Artifacts The Elmhurst History Museum reached out to amusement park owners and former employees as well as collectors to curate the exhibit, and an eclectic array of three-dimensional items will be on display: • A huge, colorful canvas mural painted by Snap Wyatt, a prolific painter of circus banners in the 1940s and ‘50s, that touts Riverview’s Freak Show attraction; • An original North Pole sign from Santa’s Village; • Tickets, advertisements, signs, and tokens from various parks; • Objects from the World’s Columbian Exposition from the Elmhurst History Museum’s collection.

The Elmhurst History Museum is located at 120 E. Park Ave. in downtown Elmhurst. Exhibition hours are Sunday and Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is free, and limited free parking is available. By Tresa Erickson Every year as the second Sunday in May approaches, millions of people across the country turn their thoughts to Mom and find ways to let her know how much she means to them. Although it wasn’t always celebrated on the second Sunday in May, Mother’s Day has been around in some form since ancient times.

The ancient Greeks and Romans held a festival each spring honoring maternal goddesses like Rhea and Cybele. During these celebrations, participants would put on parades, play games and participate in masquerades.

Early Christians held their own festival in honor of the Virgin Mary. When the English took up the celebration, they expanded it to include all mothers and renamed it Mothering Sunday. On this day, individuals attended services for the Virgin Mary and then visited their own mothers, bringing them flowers, gifts and treats.

The popularity of Mothering Sunday had faded considerably by the start of the 19th century but remerged in the 1870s due to the efforts of activist and writer Julia Ward Howe. Howe thought there should be a day in honor of mothers in the United States. She introduced her idea in 1872, calling for the celebration to take place on June 2 and all mothers to take a stand against war. Howe had seen the devastation the loss of life in the Civil War had had on mothers everywhere.

Although many embraced her idea of a day for peace, the celebration of Mother’s Day as we know it today did not come about until the

early 20th century when Anna Jarvis introduced it.

As a child, Anna Jarvis had heard her mother pray for a day dedicated solely to mothers, living and deceased, and honoring their contributions. When her mother died in 1905, Jarvis recalled her mother’s wish and started campaigning for a national holiday for mothers everywhere. She wrote letters to many leaders in her community and across the country and spoke about the matter at many functions.

By 1911, Jarvis’ efforts had paid off, with nearly every state in the country celebrating the day. Just three years later on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill into law, establishing the second Sunday of every May Mother’s Day. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in various nations around the world.

Spouses and children all over take time out to honor the mothers in their lives, and for that, Anna Jarvis and her mother would be thankful.

York badminton team wins sectional title Jovic, Toole, Kayman and Wilton headed to state

The York girls badminton team made a big postseason splash by winning the recent Glenbrook South sectional title in Glenview.

York finished with 13.5 points, which was a single point better than second-place Deerfield and two points ahead of host Glenbrook South.

The Dukes qualified four players for this weekend’s IHSA state finals meet in Charleston at Eastern Illinois University. The maximum a team can qualify is six.

York’s Aleksina Jovic qualified in singles, as did Regan Toole. The Dukes’ doubles team of Rachel Kayman and Grace Wilton won the sectional doubles title.

Kayman and Wilton won 21-14, 21-11 against Deerfield in their first match and downed Glenbrook South 21-14, 12-21, 21-15 in the semifinals before ousting the Deerfield team of

Grace Baddeley and Marley Rubin 21-19, 18-21, 21-18 for the sectional doubles title.

Jovic took third in the singles tournament. She was a 21-10, 21-6 winner against Deerfield and then lost 21-15, 15-21, 21-13 to Glenbrook South sophomore Tina Tsai, who finished second in the tournament.

Jovic won 21-14, 21-16 against Vernon Hills and then downed teammate Toole 21-10, 21-17 in the third-place contest.

Toole won 21-5, 21-4 against Chicago Mather and then dropped a 21-18, 14-21, 21-19 contest to Glenbrook South before coming back to defeat Vernon Hills 21-16, 21-11 and Zion-Benton 21-6, 21-11. Toole also defeated Glenbrook South 21-13, 9-21, 21-17 before losing to Jovic.

“I was impressed by the desire of each York player to fight for every point and find a way to win,” said York coach Gena Fite. “These were not easy matches. We are proud to play for York. York Dukes forever.”

Fite pointed out York was voted the 10th seed out of 25 seeds at the sectional complex meeting. Glenbrook South was seeded third.

“I warned the coaches at the

meeting that though our individual records were not that impressive, it took us half the season to figure out our pairings/lineup with only one returning varsity player, our kids were capable of defeating good teams,” she said. “The Glenbrook South coach congratulated me on our win by saying we really surprised them.

Never underestimate a Duke. I’m so proud of the girls.”

Earlier, York took fifth at the varsity level at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet. York won the JV Silver Division title and took second at the freshman level.

At the varsity level, Sarah Martich was first at No. 8 singles, while Grace Wilton was third at No. 3 singles and Coco Conrardy was third at No. 9 singles. Eva Jacobsthal also performed well at No. 7 singles.

The No. 4 doubles team of Natalie Krauter and Conrardy took second, while the No. 5 team of Lorena Montenegro and Anjaly Kappan took second.

Fite was particularly pleased with Martich’s efforts at No. 8 singles.

“Sarah played flawless badminton,” she said. “She is what I call, ‘in the zone.’ She was focused and analyt-

ical. Sarah’s execution of high-level strategy against her opponent in the finals allowed her to dictate the rallies and hence win 21-14, 21-12.”

Krauter, Martich, Conrardy, Susan Vaughey and Jacobsthal were named to the all-WSC academic team.

The sectional title is York’s 15th since 2001. This is Fite’s second sectional title in her second tour of duty as head coach.

Her 2006 team also won a sectional crown, which started a string of 14 sectional titles in a row, including this year’s, according to IHSA records.

Timothy Christian boys tennis team splits matches in Champaign Schnurr qualifies for state boys gymnastics meet

While the Timothy Christian boys tennis team had a recent invitational cancelled in Champaign, it didn’t stop the Trojans from getting some work in during their trip there.

The Trojans were 4-2 winners against Champaign Central and also dropped a 3-1 all-doubles match to Champaign Centennial. Timothy was 7-5 overall through its first 12 duals and was 2-2 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

Micah Bosman and Ben Rowell were 7-2 through their first nine matches at No. 2 doubles. “Micah and Ben have been dominating most matches at second doubles and continue to be a strong point of the team,” said Timothy coach Keith Mills.

Overall, Mills is seeing progress.

“The team overall is going step by step to improve with each match,” he said. “In both wins and losses, the thought process and strategy is getting better. Consistency has been one of the most noticeable improvements.”

The Trojans also have been bolstered by the play of Payton Ward and Christian Morrow of late at No. 3 doubles.

“Payton and Christian have been winning at third doubles,” said Mills.

“They have played as partners most of their four years on the team.”

Ward and Morrow were 7-2 through their first nine matches together.

Timothy has matches scheduled this week with Fenton, Montini, Aurora Central Catholic and Lisle before competing Saturday in the Metro Suburban Conference tournament.

“The attitude of the boys has been positive and effort has been strong,” said Mills. “Three of the five losses have been by a couple points.

We need to start winning the close matches.”

Timothy Christian boys gymnastics Timothy Christian junior Scott Schnurr is headed to the boys gymnastics state meet this weekend.

Schnurr, who competes as an individual, tied for third on still rings at the recent Lyons Township sectional and earned an automatic bid in the state meet that starts Friday at Hoffman Estates High School.

Schnurr finished with an 8.70 score on rings to advance.

York girls soccer team defeats Hinsdale South Cripe headed to boys gymnastic state meet

The York girls soccer team split a pair of recent matches with Hinsdale South and Downers Grove North.

York downed Hinsdale South 4-0 in a West Suburban Conference crossover game and also lost 2-1 in overtime to Downers Grove North in a WSC Silver Division contest. The split put York at 6-7-1 overall and 1-3 in WSC Silver play.

Through late last week, Bridget Los was leading the team with six goals and six assists. Maddie Jeffery had four goals and two assists, as did Greta Roy. Maya Rebic had three goals and four assists.

“We have improved with communicating with each other on the field,” said York coach Stevan Dobric. “Each player has been developing a greater understanding of her role as the season progresses and is able to communicate more effectively because of it.”

Dobric also has watched a strong uptick in offensive production recently. “Our team has done a great job of scoring goals of late,” he said.

“Against every opponent, we are

scoring goals, which was not the case at the start of the season.”

Dobric lauded the play of Rene Sieracki and Megan Hanebuth, in particular. “Rene has really picked up her intensity in training and in matches, scoring important goals in important games,” he said. “Megan has impressed everyone on our team with her explosiveness and ability to take players on in the offensive end.”

Kathleen Levins also has been a key cog for the Dukes this spring.

“Kathleen has been a tremendous leader in the goal, making huge saves in games and commanding the back line with great leadership,” said Dobric.

Dobric said York is far from resting on its laurels with the playoffs around the corner. “As playoffs approach, we need to keep refining all elements of our game because the team understands that even when you think you have something perfect you still need to practice it more,” he said.

The coach added York has been involved in a variety of close contests this season—something he feels will make it better in the long run. “I have been blown away by the girls’ passion for the game and their work ethic in every match,” he said. “We have played many close matches and have not always come out on top. The next day, every girl

is ready to work and improve for the next match with a smile on her face and determination to improve.

This group never gives up and has a resilience about them that is phenomenal.”

York boys gymnastics York junior Charlie Cripe is headed to the boys gymnastics state meet this weekend at Hoffman Estates High School.

Cripe earned an automatic bid by tying for first on the horizontal bar at the recent Lyons Township sectional meet. Cripe finished with a 9.1 score.

Cripe’s effort helped York take fourth as a team in the sectional with 133.3 points.

IC Catholic Prep’s Hurt surpasses 100-career goal mark Will continue career at North Central College

Every sport has its special statistical milestone.

In the case of high-school girls soccer, 100 goals is that special benchmark.

And it’s a benchmark that IC Catholic Prep senior Olivia Hurt now can call her own. In a recent game against Chicago Christian, Hurt scored the 100th and 101st goals of her fouryear IC Catholic Prep career.

“It’s really exciting that I was able to reach that milestone. And to do it my senior year is really special,” Hurt said. “All of my teammates around me made this possible. I could not do it without them. Without them, I’m not able to score 100 goals.”

Hurt explained that goal 100 came

with her standing at the top of the box against Chicago Christian. “The ball popped out to me and I had one touch and shot it from pretty far out over the goalie’s head and it went in.”

Hurt again thanked her teammates for helping her get to 101 career goals during the Chicago Christian matchup. “I have amazing teammates,” she said. “They always are setting me up perfectly. It’s like that on all the goals.”

Hurt said being a good goal-scorer involves a several-step process.

“Whenever I get the ball close to the goal I see what is open and I shoot it,” she said. “I hope for the best. I’m always aiming for it to go in.”

Hurt admits the late-season milestone has a bittersweet tinge to it.

“These last four years have gone by very quickly,” she said. “The fact that it’s my senior year and we just had senior night is crazy. It’s crazy to think where I started four years ago.

It’s gone by so fast.”

Beyond the goal scoring, Hurt is proud of the evolution of her lead-

ership skills. “My biggest improvement I would say is my ability to be a leader on the team and the ability to use my voice to help my teammates out.”

Hurt will continue her soccer career at North Central College in Naperville. “I’m really excited for North Central,” she said. “Ever since I first went on campus there, I thought it would be the perfect place for me. From the coaches to the players on the team and the school itself, it’s a perfect environment. I’m so excited to be there next year.”

In terms of soccer plans this sum-

mer, Hurt said she will look into playing in a U20 league, as well as embark on a variety of different training regimens to get her ready for the college game.

But before North Central, Hurt still has some IC Catholic Prep business to tend to with the state playoffs quickly approaching.

“Our season is going really well,” Hurt said late last week. “At the beginning of the season we played some really hard teams. Now, we’ve won something like eight of our last 11 games and have really picked it up and come together as a group.

We’ve gone through a lot of adversity the last few weeks with injuries.

Everybody has stepped up. We’re working together as a team very well right now.”

The Knights opened up Class 1A regional play earlier this week against Chicago ASPIRA/Early College. If IC Catholic Prep won that contest it will play for the regional title at home Saturday at 5:30 p.m. against either Guerin Prep or Chicago Intrinsic Charter.

The Knights are the No. 1 seed in sub-sectional A of its own Class 1A IC Catholic Prep sectional.

York junior-varsity hockey team pleased with league title Lee leads way in scoring during playoffs

The York hockey club’s junior-varsity team had plenty to be proud of this past season.

The Dukes won the Scholastic Hockey League championship, beating Stevenson in the championship game. The Dukes downed Glenbrook South in the quarterfinals and Glenbrook North in the semifinals. All three victories came via 2-0 sweeps in the best-of-three series.

It was the first time in York’s history that it won the league title.

“It’s the best season we’ve had at the JV level,” said York JV coach Matt Boeing. “We had a very strong season.”

In the playoffs, freshman assistant captain Greg Lee led the way with seven points on four goals and three assists. Freshman Shane Gorski had three goals and two assists, while sophomore Samuel Barnitz tied for the team lead in playoff goals with four.

Lee and sophomore Sean McCarthy led the team with 16 points each during league play. Tighe McCarthy and Janie Angelucci each had 10 points.

Boeing pointed to strong team leadership as an overriding factor in the team’s success. “Jake Varmata was our captain and his leadership and the team’s leadership was huge,” he said. “We had very good team chemistry. We had a great team culture. It was a cohesive and positive group that matured. All of that made the season special.”

Boeing said the Dukes, who played their home contests at Addison Ice Rink, also benefitted from a stifling defense. “Our defense was out of this world this year,” he said. “It was hard to score a goal on us.”

Logan Maloney, a freshman, led the league in defenseman points with 13. “Logan is a strong defenseman,” said Boeing.

The coach also liked York’s ability

to move the puck around on offense.

“We had a good ability to find each other on the ice,” he said. “Guys made plays and stepped up and found each other on the ice and we took control. We also played a physical game. If we got knocked down, we got right back up and kept on rolling.

We had a blast this season. The kids bought into the culture we have here and were motivated to improve and play well. It made our jobs very easy this year.”

The York club hockey program is in the midst of its spring season right now.

York boys water polo team hits 20-win mark Hicks scores eight goals in overtime game

The York boys water polo team strung together a series of three wins that helped earn the team an important benchmark.

The Dukes’ voctories against Barrington, Glenbrook North and Palatine put them at 20-7 overall. York was 4-1 in West Suburban Conference action through late last week.

York was an 8-6 winner against Barrington, an 18-7 winner against Glenbrook North and a 20-10 winner against Palatine.

Coach Brian Drumm noted the Dukes have been perfecting their press recently. “Our press has really

been strong lately,” he said. “As a result, our defense has been able to create about five more steals a game over the past two weeks than before that point. Sometimes the boys get to a place as a team where we’re able to get steal after steal. We’re working on making that even more consistent.”

And thus, the Dukes also have seen progress offensively. “I’ve seen the most improvement in the ability of our defense to create offense,” he said. “Our boys have been much more aggressive and our forcing of turnovers has been leading to lots of new offensive production.”

But Drumm said the team’s offense continues to refine itself. “We have a lot of options in our set offense,” he said. “We’re continually trying to get to a place where all the boys are able to find the best option to score on every possession.”

Junior Carson Hicks has been particularly busy on the offensive end.

“Carson has turned into a major scoring threat,” said Drumm. “He scored eight goals in our overtime loss to Neuqua Valley. Because of this, we can now score consistently from the center position, so Carson is drawing more double teams. This opens up our shooters.”

Drumm also has been pleased with sophomore Jacob Dunlap. “Jacob is great at getting in the passing lanes on defense, and he’s also really found his shot on the varsity level over the past month.”

York was in the midst of the WSC tournament where it was in the semifinals against Hinsdale Central. The Dukes are playing in the sectional at Fenwick this week. York is the No. 2 seed and faces Chicago Amundsen today at Fenwick in Oak Park.

Bethel begins Kinder Concert Series Library programs

Sergei Prokofiev’s beloved musical tale Peter and the Wolf will be featured in the opening performance of a new Kinder Concert Series at Bethel United Church of Christ in Elmhurst on Friday, May 17 from 4-4:30 in the church sanctuary. A special invitation is extended to children and their families as well as members of the community of all ages.

Using the composer’s own adaptation for piano of this orchestral work, Bethel’s Minister of Music

pianist Jeffrey Panko and Bethel Learning Center teacher Georgia DeClark, narrator, will present this perfect introduction to a time-honored classic for young children and their families.

The concert also features one of Panko’s piano students, 11-year old Nathan Li, who will open the program with Copland’s hysterical The Cat and the Mouse.

This inaugural concert is in memory of Laurie Fitzgerald, who was a well-loved teacher at Bethel Learn-

ing Center (BLC). There is no admission charge for the concert, but a free-will donation of $5 per family is suggested. Monies donated at the event will go to scholarships in Fitzgerald’s name for BLC students.
