Late fees waived for property taxpayers impacted by COVID-19 The DuPage County Board voted today to authorize the County Treasurer to waive late fees on property tax payments for taxpayers who can demonstrate financial hardship due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Interest penalties for late payments of the first installment of property taxes, which are due June 1, will be postponed until Sept. 1 for property owners who meet certain criteria.

Payments made any time until Sept. 1 will be considered timely. If the payment of the first installment is made after Sept. 1, penalties will revert to June 1.

“Through our COVID-19 response, we are continually looking for ways to ease the

burden on our residents,” said Chairman Dan Cronin. “This step will ensure we keep our vital County services operational, while helping to ease the impact on those who may have been impacted by the virus.”

In order to receive relief, the property owner must meet one of the following criteria: • The property owner was laid off or terminated from employment after March 9, if the applicant had been employed for at least 90 days prior to termination • The taxpayer has seen a reduction in income of 20 percent or greater • A property owner has been unable to collect at least 80 percent of collectable rent on

the property from March 1 to May 30 • A business operated by a property owner, located on that property, was shut down after being classified as non-essential and the applicant has not applied for and received relief pursuant to the Paycheck Protection Program of the Coronavirus, Aid Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. “The action was taken to address the reality that many DuPage County property owners have lost income due to the shutdown in effect because of the COVID-19 crisis,” said Treasurer Gwen Henry. “The fact exists that

many families who have set aside money to pay their property taxes now need those funds to make mortgage or car payments as well as purchase groceries, medicine and other necessities,” she said.

Property taxes paid through escrow are not subject to relief.

For now, the Sept. 1 tax deadline for the second installment of property taxes will remain unchanged and late penalties will still apply. The application for waived late payment fees can be found online at dupageco. org/treasurer.

Industrious Scouts clean up

Evan Carry, who is 13 and a member of Elmhurst Troop 82, and his brother Peyton who is age 7 and a member of Cub Scout Pack 24, took part in Earth Day Scout Service by cleaning up the area near Salt Creek and the Prairie Path. The boys came up with a good idea to clean up an area that had been neglected for quite a long time. They managed to pick up three vanloads of trash and garbage as well as other “junk” retrieved from the water using a grappling hook and retrieving pole. Much of the junk is pictured here, as the boys found a bike, animal trap, fire extinguisher, boots, patio furniture, suitcase, and scrap metal.

First Ward’s Sabatino resigns COVID-19

At the City Council meeting on Monday, May 4, which was held virtually, Mayor Steve Morley announced the resignation of Alderman Mark Sabatino from representing the First Ward on the Elmhurst City Council.

“It is with regret that I inform you that I had to accept the resignation of Alderman Sabatino,” Morley said. “He has accepted a position in Nashville and has tendered his resignation as of Thursday, May 7.

“At this time, we are unable to hold a proper farewell but we hope to have Alderman Sabatino come back at a later time so we can thank him properly.”

“As the mayor stated, I changed jobs and will be moving to Nashville,” Sabatino said. “This is certainly not the format of how I ever intended to resign.”

He then shared a favorite quote: “You never change your life until you step out of

your comfort zone and life begins when you take that first step.”

Sabatino went on to praise his fellow aldermen, the mayor, City Manager and all the staff at City Hall.

“It’s been an honor to serve with you. I thank all of you for your dedication and hard work,” he said. “I have the utmost respect for all of you, especially Alderman Marti Deuter, my counterpart in Ward One. “It starts with a solid foundation and you are all the best.”

Sabatino got in a few friendly jabs during his farewell to the mayor.

“I will miss Mayor Morley and his wisdom, his sense of humor, his Clark Kent disguise around town and his knowledge of 1970s cartoon characters,” he joked. “It’s not goodbye, it’s ‘see ya later.’”

“It’s a tough way to say goodbye,” said Morley.

“We hope to have a send-off at a later date if you will come back.”

Hospital celebrates Addison man’s discharge

Late Monday, Elmhurst Hospital told the Elmhurst Independent that on Tuesday, May 5, 30-yearold Jonathan Davila, of Addison, was scheduled to leave the hospital at 155 E. Brush Hill Road in the afternoon. Davila was a patient being treated for COVID-19 Coronavirus since March 23.

Davila was among the first patients with COVID-19 to be treated at the Hospital. He was intubated for 20+ days for respiratory failure due

to COVID-19. He was also on dialysis at one point during his 44-day stay. He is no longer on dialysis and does not require oxygen.

Upon discharge, Davila was to be transferred to Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton.

The exciting part of the day on Tuesday was that Davila’s wife Ashley and their children Danny, Mason and Elijah were to be waiting outside to greet him as he left Elmhurst Hospital and before he went Marianjoy. Davila has not seen his children since he was hospitalized.

As of 11 a.m. on Monday, May 4, there were 3,743 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 197 deaths. Of those, 687 were outbreak-associated, while 3,056 were not. Since Sunday, there were 80 new cases and five deaths reported.

(Outbreak-associated cases are linked to a congregate setting, e.g., long-term care facilities, workplaces, schools, or large gathering, e.g., convention, concert.)

Regarding the 687 outbreak-associated cases (including 142 deaths) among DuPage County residents: • 47 cases (including 11 deaths) are attributed to the Willowbrook long-term care facility (LTCF), • 571 cases (including 131 deaths) are attributed to 54 additional LTCFs, and • 69 cases are attributed to 29 outbreaks in other congregate settings and large gatherings.

DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) announces four additional deaths of persons with COVID-19 infection reported since Sunday: • Male resident of DuPage County in his 50s with underlying conditions who had been living in the community; • Male resident of DuPage County in his 60s with underlying conditions who had been living in the community; • Male resident of a Naperville long-term care facility in his 90s with underlying conditions.

• Male resident of DuPage County in his 70s with underlying conditions who had been living in the community;.

• Female resident of Carol Stream longterm care facility in her 80s with underlying conditions.

Number of cases by town At press time, the DuPage Department of Health reported the following number of COVID-19 cases in our readership communities as follows: Addison 323, Bensenville 253, Elmhurst 147, Lombard 143, Oakbrook Terrace 13, Villa Park 106, Wood Dale 73.

And now for the good news…

So far, 181 COVID-19 patients discharged from Elmhurst Hospital While the Independent continues its coverage of the latest statistics in the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, we have decided to report how many people have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital – a number we WANT to see get higher every week.

As of May 4, Elmhurst Hospital is currently treating 58 inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19. Elmhurst Hospital has had 37 deaths of inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Since March 24, 181 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19.

That’s up from 146 last week. That’s the number we like to see increase.

Update on Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network during Covid-19 crisis The mission of the Elmhurst Walkin Assistance Network (EWAN) states: “The caring people of Elmhurst unite to provide compassionate assistance to people in need in our community.” With this as its purpose, the organization finds itself on the front lines of the financial crisis brought on by the coronavirus.

EWAN has been serving people going through tough times since 1997, but never before have so many needed so much.

“We have already far exceeded what we budgeted for rental assistance for the entire year,” said Executive Director Jackie Crnkovich.

“In April we processed six times the number of new clients than we normally do in a month. The need is tremendous.”

Many of the families seeking helped have been referred by the school social workers. They have been working hard to stay in touch with their students and help them find financial resources for their families while parents are out of work.

Nelly Avina is a social worker at York who works with many of the English Language Learners. She said one of the biggest points of stress for her has been seeing her students’ concern that their families will lose their homes. She expressed her gratitude that EWAN is a place she can refer families to prevent this from happening.

“It’s amazing the work they do,” she said. “With my whole heart, I

thank them.”

An added challenge for the organization has been adjusting to a new way of doing things. In the past, clients would walk-in, no appointment required. It’s in the name after all.

Nothing was done over the phone and, if a family couldn’t come during site hours, they requested to meet in person with the after-hours volunteer. That has been completely turned on its head. Intakes of new clients are being conducted over the phone and photos of identification, bills, and leases all have to be emailed in.

Families wishing to visit the Immaculate Conception Food Pantry have to call the EWAN site when they arrive on campus before being directed to pick up their food outside the pantry door.

While the process is more time consuming, the number of people able to carry out the work has also decreased. Because the office is not large, they have to be careful about the number of people in the room at any time, and many volunteers protecting their own health are not able to work during the crisis.

Crnkovich notes that the volunteers have really risen to the occasion. They’ve been able to pivot with brand new procedures, and those who can come in are happy to cover for those who can’t.

“Our volunteers are truly amazing.”

Another bright spot has been the generosity of the community, which is enabling EWAN to respond to the increase in financial assistance requests. They have received two

$10,000 grants from the District 205 Foundation’s Community Response Fund and the DuPage Foundation’s Covid-19 Response Fund.

The 100+ Women Who Care has named EWAN one of the recipients

of their May giving. The Rotary Club of Elmhurst also provided a generous grant.

“Businesses, service organizations, churches, and a number of very generous donors have really

come through for us,” Crnkovich said. “We quite literally could not do what we’re doing without all these partners. When so many people are

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal trespass, criminal damage April 23 Jordan E. Wisner, 21, of Glendale Heights, was charged with criminal trespass to property, while Casey Nicole Troyer, 35, of Caledonia, Ill., was processed on a warrant out of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office in the 600 block of W. Third at around 1:25 p.m. Police said a reporting officer met with a complainant who stated a subject who had previously been evicted from the property was found sleeping inside the home. According to police, the reporting officer entered the property and Wisner and Troyer sleeping in the residence.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance April 29 Police said officers responded to the 200 block of E. First at around 2:16 a.m. for the report of a domestic battery. The reporting officer met with the complainant who stated her boyfriend pulled her out of bed and locked her out of the home. No arrests were made due to conflicting statements and there were no signs of a physical altercation.

A victim told police at around 1:30 p.m. that her son became irate and began hitting his mother and the nanny. The suspect also caused damage inside the house. The suspect then hid in the basement. Officers located the suspect and restored order. The suspect’s father returned to the residence. The parents refused treatment for the suspect.

April 28 A 39-year-old Chicago man was charged with two counts of domestic battery and unlawful interference with reporting a domestic battery in the 400 block of N. York at around 9:02 p.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for the report of a domestic battery in progress. The reporting officer met with the victim who stated the suspect had punched her. The victim attempted to dial 911, but the suspect grabbed the victim’s phone from her hands. During the altercation, the victim had suffered a laceration to her face and was evaluated by medics.

April 26 A 28-year-old Chicago man was charged with obstructing a police officer and two counts of domestic battery at a hotel in the 900 block of Riverside at around 3:27 a.m. A victim told police that the suspect pulled her out of the car, causing scrapes to her knee and punched her in the face, causing lacerations to her lower lip.

DUI, DUI-drugs April 24 Jacob Leoni, 25, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI-drugs in the 500 block of S. Spring at around 1:46 a.m.

Failure to give information April 24 Hilda Guillen, 45, of Westchester, was charged with failing to give information after she allegedly struck an unattended vehicle in the 1200 block of S. York at around 2:39 p.m.

Harassment April 28 A victim in the 600 block of Mary Court told police at around 6:30 p.m. that upon arriving home, the father of her grandchildren was in her driveway. The suspect exited his vehicle and was yelling and swearing at the victim. The victim intends to seek an order of protection and wished the incident to be documented.

April 24-April 26 A victim in the 900 block of S. Hawthorne told police at around 1 p.m. that she has been receiving threatening text messages from her father between the above dates. The victim states the suspect has a mental health condition and is not taking his prescribed medications.

Attempts to contact the suspect were unsuccessful.

Possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia April 25 Hector R. Rivera, 29, of Hillside, was charged with possession of adult use cannabis in a vehicle, driving while license revoked, unlawful use of an electronic communication device, improper use of registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Chatham at around 8:57 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances April 29 Police said officers responded to an area near St. Charles and Fair at around 7:51 a.m. after a call was made to 911 stating her son was driving erratically and wanted to drive into a tree. The unknown caller stated they were on Fair Avenue. The area was checked with no results.

April 28 Police said that subsequent to a report of a suspicious suspect approaching and looking into homes near Lake and Indiana at around 11:19 p.m., officers made contact with the suspect, who related he was walking home to Itasca. The officer observed a broken glass smoking pipe on the ground near where the suspect was walking. The officer retrieved the smoking pipe which tested positive for cocaine and placed the pipe into evidence.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Feb. 19 Fraud and theft were reported at a car dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand at around 12:06 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect provided fraudulent identification and information to the dealership, in order to purchase a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle was entered into LEADS as stolen.

April 28 Lance Thomas, 60, of Roselle, was charged with burglary to a vehicle, attempted residential burglary, attempted burglary to a vehicle and violation of bail bond in the 200 block of E. Butterfield at around 7:16 a.m. Police said that subsequent to an investigation of a suspicious person pulling on vehicle door handles, Thomas was located as he attempted to gain entry to a residence. According to police, Thomas was in possession of property which had been taken in a burglary to motor vehicle.

Police said Thomas entered the victim’s unlocked vehicle in the parking lot at the above location and removed several items, damaged the victim’s vehicle, and defecated inside of the victim’s vehicle.

Jan. 2-Feb. 3 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of Forest sometime between the above dates.

A victim told police that she received her ComEd bill, which showed a transfer of service on it which was not hers. The transfer charges were from an address in Chicago. The victim was advised by ComEd to complete a police report.

April 25-April 27 Theft of vehicle parts was reported at a trucking company in the 700 block of N. York.

A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) stole 10 tires with rims and two generators off of three Freightliner trucks, which were parked in the southwest corner of their parking lot sometime between the above dates.

The chain link fence in the northwest corner of the parking lot was cut.

April 25 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 1:10 p.m. Police said a suspect had walked out of the store with a full cart of liquor and dog food without paying. The suspect was observed by an employee loading bottles into the car and covering the bottles with a bag of dog food. An investigation is pending.

April 24 Joshua R. Pannell, 23, of Wheaton, was charged with retail theft, burglary, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia at a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 4:37 p.m. Police said Pannell stole liquor. According to police, Pannell was located near Spring and St. Charles and was found to be in possession of the stolen liquor, a crack pipe, hypodermic needle and a liquid, suspected to be methadone.

Commercial burglary was reported at a gas station in the 100 block of W. Third at around 4:33 a.m. Police said reporting officers responded to a burglar alarm at the station. Upon arrival, the front glass door was found to be shattered and an ATM was stolen. An investigation is pending.

March 31-April 13 Forgery was reported in the 100 block of E. Elmhurst. Police said a victim made an online order to have a personal check mailed from Wells Fargo to Arcadia Properties LLC for his rent. The check was sent on March 31 and cleared on April 13. The check was intercepted and made payable to an unknown subject. Arcadia Properties requested the victim to make a police report.

March 3 Theft of vehicle parts was reported at a car dealership in the 700 block of N. York at around 12:05 p.m. The dealership noticed on the above date that four wheels—all being from the rear of two 2020 Hyundai Tucsons— were stolen from the far west end of their rear parking lot.

DuPage County Court requires face-coverings DuPage County Chief Judge Daniel P. Guerin issued an Administrative Order effective May 1, 2020, requiring all attorneys and other members of the general public able to medically tolerate a face-covering to wear one when located within the indoor public spaces of the DuPage County Courthouse. All persons inside a courtroom, including courtroom personnel, shall wear a facecovering.

All attorneys and other members of the general public entering the public spaces of the courthouse are expected to have their own face-covering.

Courthouse security personnel will have a limited supply of face-coverings.

Any person who is unable to obtain a face-covering and needs access to the DuPage County Courthouse for the following reasons will be provided with a face-covering: a) Emergency matters. b) Petitions and hearings on: • Emergency and plenary orders of protection • Stalking no-contact orders • Civil no-contact orders • Firearm restraining orders c) Other matters at the discretion of courthouse security personnel.

Rose Marie Peters, 90 Rose Marie Therese (nee Pusateri) Peters passed away recently at the age of 90. Beloved wife of the late Robert John Peters, loving mother of Mary Jo (Charles Madick) Peters, Janet (Robert) Kremer, James Robert (Elizabeth Woods) Peters, John Joseph (Mary) Peters; proud grandmother of Kathryn (Steven Walsh) Peters, Sarah, Megan, Elizabeth, Jacob, Kristin Kremer, Dana Kremer and David. Honored great grandmother of James Patrick and Liam Patrick Walsh. Sister of the late Joseph F. Pusateri, Jr., daughter of the late Joseph F. Pusateri, Sr. and the late Natalina Mary (nee Vergamini) Pusateri.

Rose Marie (Rosemarie) graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst in 1947 and began her career at Music Corporation of America in Chicago. After a short time, she took a job in the Personnel Department at Standard Screw Company in Bellwood.

There she met Bob, her loving husband of 62 years. She began a second career in the 1970’s as a retail sales associate for highend cosmetics and skincare, consistently achieving top-seller status at all the major department stores in the Oakbrook Shopping Center until her retirement in 1994.

Rosemarie loved to sew couture designs, decorate, cook gourmet Italian food, garden, and knit.

She strongly believed la famiglia e tutto and was featured in the Chicago Tribune for her extensive genealogy research on the Vergamini and Pusateri families.

Nancy Saviola, 101 Nancy Joan Saviola (Rizzo) was born on April 14, 1919, in Melrose Park, and passed away on her 101st birthday on April 14, 2020. She was married to her childhood sweetheart, David Donald Saviola, Sr. for 65 years.

Wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Nancy was the quintessential homemaker, an excellent cook, and caring friend to all. She had a beautiful voice and could be heard singing all day. A diehard Cubs fan, she often took the senior citizen bus to see “her” Cubbies play and lived 100 years to see them win the World Series. Nancy leaves behind her daughter Nancy (Saviola) Kies, a son, Michael (Debra), and a son, Daniel; 15 grandchildren and many great- and great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband David Sr. and two sons David, Jr. and John.

She is survived by one sister, Estelle (Rizzo) VonBrimer, and many nieces and nephews. There will be a private burial with a memorial mass to be announced at a later date.

Georgianna Vorel, 95 Georgianna Frances Vorel, of Elmhurst, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2020 at Elmhurst Hospital one week after she turned 95 years old. She was born on April 16, 1925 in Chicago to Charles and Nadine M. Koehne, 78 Tillie Hlavac. She married Charles Nadine M. Koehne, age 78, of Joseph Vorel on September 3, 1949 Elmhurst. Cherished daughter in Chicago. He preceded her in of the late Art and Margaret (nee death on February 11, 2002.

She also loved to watch the birds in her backyard, reading, Sudoku, and jigsaw puzzles. She was a regular contributor to a wide range

of organizations and charities, including those which help war veterans, animals and Native Americans.

Most of all, she loved her family, her dogs, and her home and felt happiness and peace there. Now she is in her “eternal home” where she will live in peace with her loved ones who went before her.

Put your dollars where your advertisement is, reader says On the TV, in the newspaper, on front yard signs – almost everywhere we see signs thanking those on the front lines of the fight against COVID19. Police, fire, EMTs, doctors, nurses, home health care workers, grocery store employees...the list goes on and on of those who deserve our thanks and praise for their selfless dedication to our welfare.

In many cases these sentiments are reflected in real-world support. Unfortunately, not always.

As you might expect, many doctors, nurses, first-responders, etc. are becoming infected with the virus. It is a known risk from the work they do. This was recognized by the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission when in April it expanded coverage for first responders, health care workers, grocery store employees and some others considered “essential.” The Commission passed a rule stating that if front-line workers get infected with COVID19 it would be presumed to be a result of their work duties. This made collecting benefits easier for these folks if they

became ill and could not work.

The Illinois Manufacturers’ Association and the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, representatives of many Illinois employers, sued in court and got this rule rescinded. As a result, front-line workers suffering with COVID19 will now have to prove they became ill from their work duties. And their employers will be able to challenge their assertions, the result being long, drawn out legal battles that can leave a sick employee waiting for months, or longer, for any benefits.

If we really want to support those people doing the hard and dangerous work of protecting us we need to recognize the risks they are taking and not do anything that would make it harder for them to take care of themselves and their families. It’s time for Illinois employers to put their money where their glossy advertisements are and pay Workers’ Compensation benefits whenever a front-line employee becomes ill. We can do no less for these selfless people.

It is printed below in its entirety: “The Class of 2020 has been longing normalcy ever since our last day inside the walls of York High School. We have been craving the days that every York class has been guaranteed. Prom, graduation, awards night and even senior ditch day. We have put the most consequential period in our life, thus far, on hold for others. For our doctors, nurses and EMTs. “The Class of 2020 deserves a sense of normalcy upon the rescheduling of these events, not a cancellation. A cancellation of these events simply rips the Class of 2020 of the 12 years of education we have worked so hard for.

“Reschedule a normal prom and a normal graduation. Normal is not a drive-through graduation. Normal is not a virtual graduation. Normal is not a photo-op alone, receiving the diploma we have all worked so hard for. Normal is all being together in one graduation ceremony, not in our cars or living rooms, but at York.

“Normal is being together where we belong at the sanctuary we call York High School for four amazing years.”

Part of our duties here at the Independent includes pulling together the COVID-19 report every week, listing how many new cases, how many deaths not only across DuPage County, but in each of our individual readership communities – Elmhurst, Addison, Bensenville, Villa Park, Lombard, Oakbrook Terrace (included in Villa Park) and Wood Dale (included in Bensenville).

Watching that report and pulling those numbers every week eventually starts to eat at your soul, knowing each number represents a human being, someone’s mother, father, sister, brother, spouse or child, not to mention aunts, uncles and cousins.

Then last week, it got a little bit easier, as we covered EdwardElmhurst Health’s new initiative to place metal daffodils into the grounds around the hospital to celebrate each person who has been RELEASED from the hospital after being treated.

Immediately a call was placed to our publisher Pete Cruger. I told him THAT was the number we should report every week.

At least, alongside the number of cases and deaths – let’s list how many people have gotten well and gone home. That’s a number we WANT to go up!

The Independent is proud to report that since March 24, 146 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for

The Elmhurst Family YMCA celebrates 60 years A salute to founder Elizabeth Engstrand Ackerman (1907 – 2000)

If you are a member of the Elmhurst Family YMCA today you are familiar with the numerous programs and exciting activities the “Y” has to offer. The building, which has been renovated over the years, is a landmark located at 211 W. First Street.

But there was a time our community had no YMCA, and most people today wouldn’t remember the one person who initiated the efforts to bring a Young Men’s Christian Association to Elmhurst.

Her name was Elizabeth Ackerman. On Thursday, February 23, 1961 an Elmhurst Press headline read, “Local Woman Works for Dream – Mrs. Ackerman is YMCA Heroine.” The article went on to explain how Mrs. Ackerman was directly responsible for bringing the “Y” to Elmhurst. And if that herculean effort wasn’t enough, she continued to champion almost every future fund-raising campaign, from selling candy mints to hosting carnival events like, “Visit Bombay at the YMCA.” Elizabeth Ackerman was committed to making the YMCA successful!

Elizabeth was born on February 23, 1907 in Wheaton. She enrolled at the University of Illinois where she met her future husband Joseph Ackerman. They were married in 1930. The couple had four children and moved to 399 Poplar Avenue in Elmhurst. Her priorities always were family, church and community service. Both Elizabeth and Dr. Joseph Ackerman felt very strongly about their children getting good educations. Joseph was elected President of the Elmhurst School District 46 Board of Education. He served one of the longest terms on record (1945 – 1967). Elizabeth was elected President of the Washington School PTA. In 1948 Elizabeth was Chairman of the Education Committee for the American Association of University Women. The topic selected for study was Community Recreation. The City of Elmhurst at the time had a population of about 21,000 citizens.

Elizabeth thought that a viable recreational organization with a good solid reputation and track record was definitely needed in the community.

After much research it was concluded that the Young Men’s Christian Association would be most appropriate for Elmhurst.

York Street, was the first businessman Elizabeth was able to interest in the project. Meetings with other community leaders soon followed at Mr. Ruby’s home.

Next the first Elmhurst YMCA board members were selected. They were: Alben Bates, Sr., Norman Hanson, Marvin Pollard and Elizabeth Ackerman. Then a charter was requested from the Illinois Area Council of YMCA. At an Elmhurst meeting on April 22, 1952, Mr. Keith Boys was hired as the first Executive Secretary.

The first location of the Elmhurst YMCA office was on the second floor of the building at 109 W. First Street.

The “Y” quickly grew by leaps and bounds. By the end of the first year, there were 532 members. At the time

it was one of the fastest growing suburban YMCAs in the country.

Within six months the office was already cramped and a larger space was rented at 155 W. First Street. An all-out effort was made to raise funds for a new building.

On January 11, 1955, Mr. and Mrs. Alben Bates, Mr. & Mrs. Albert H. Glos and Mrs. Mabelle Larkin donated property on First Street between Elm and Maple Avenues for the site of the new YMCA. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 7, 1958. The million-dollar facility opened its doors to an excited Elmhurst public on May 1, 1960. It was an exciting day for Elizabeth Ackerman, too, who had initiated the YMCA quest many years before.

Ackerman, the Elmhurst YMCA celebrated its 60th anniversary on May 1, 2020. Unfortunately for the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, the YMCA has been closed and will remain closed until the community is declared safe. Perhaps at that time, a formal celebration will be forthcoming.

In the meantime, Happy 60th Anniversary to the Elmhurst Family YMCA! Portions of this story appear in the book, “The First Ladies of Elmhurst,” which was originally written by Genie Urick, who revised it for this salute to Mrs. Ackerman and the Elmhurst Family YMCA on its 60th anniversary.

District plans to refund certain fees The district plans to refund families for their payments for the district’s current 2020 summer school registration. Additionally, the district will refund families who paid their 2020 spring athletics fees. The district is also working on refunding one third of the student parking fees at York for the current school year to account for the building being closed since the middle of March. The overall yearly parking fee was $156. The district will issue refunds of $52.

hey’re summoned at all hours – often times in the dead of night – to face everyday horrors few of us could stomach. They offer comfort in the midst of physical pain and a reassuring professionalism for those racked with emotional anguish. And they provide that ever-present but seldom acknowledged societal safety net that few talk about and most take for granted. They are our hometown heroes – the first responders and medical professionals who enable us to sleep secure at night. Most will tell you they’re just doing their jobs – another mark of a true hero. But, at times like these, a paycheck is not nearly enough to compensate them for the personal dangers they endure for the benefit of others. As the threat of coronavirus rages, our hometown heroes continue to put their communities ahead of themselves and their families. A simple thank you comes up woefully short as an expression of our appreciation. York grads working in New York City… an update ‘It was scary at times, I’d compare it to a war’

In its April 9 issue, the Elmhurst Independent brought readers the news that two York grads got together in New York City to help in the battle against COVID-19 Coronavirus.

Ashley Thorpe, a 2007 graduate of York, was living in Brooklyn enjoying a career, when she learned that former classmate Anastasia Talarico Zvonek would be coming to work at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, NY at what was considered the “Epicenter” of the fight against Coronavirus.

One of the biggest challenges the young ladies discovered was in simply properly and safely clothing and feeding the many health services workers who had come to help with the crisis in New York. The hotel where Anastasia and others were staying was illequipped for the amount of laundry generated by these healthcare workers and for the demand for food service not only for regular meals, but also for healthy snacks, especially after 8 p.m. when most businesses and restaurants had closed their doors.

Ashley set up a GoFundMe campaign on March 29 with a goal of $2,500, which they soon had to increase to $25,000 due to the many needs for supplies. (You’ll see below they raised more than $22,000.)

For the purpose of this section to salute its Hometown Heroes, the Independent got back in touch with Ashley and Anastasia to hear how things were going at New York’s “Epicenter.” Below are their stories from the experience, especially from Anastasia who is gratefully back home in Minneapolis now.

An update from Ashley in Brooklyn “Our GoFundMe that began as support for [Anastasia] had a goal of $2,500,” Ashley said. “In the end we all realized the need was far reaching. With the over $22,000 we raised, thanks to those from home who supported us, we were able to provide garbage bags for contaminated scrubs, 2,500 protein shakes and nutritious snack foods, as well as establish great partnerships with New York businesses that needed us almost as much as we needed them.

“Brine Chicken continues to match our meals. If anyone orders takeout and mentions #ChickenforCourage they donate a plate to our travel nurse campaign. This has allowed us to maximize our funds. For perspective; we have sent nearly 2,000 plates of hot food to the front lines.

“It was tricky to coordinate with the hotels, so we send food directly to the hospitals using a local messenger service. The owner does the deliveries himself.

“I took Anastasia to the airport and she was in pretty tough shape mentally and emotionally. It’s hard for me to even imagine the work that she did especially on top of getting this entire thing organized amidst the chaos that was her life at the hospital. It’s pretty

tremendous and makes me emotional when I think about it.

“She’s incredible. I’m very happy she’s home safe; we are proud of all that we did, but I know none of us will ever be the same.

“Though Anastasia has returned home, we now know first-hand how vital a role we can play and aim to continue through the summer months.

While the curve is flattening here, the state of the public hospital system (which travel nurses support) is still awful. This food matters and continues to be a ray of light for these nurses.”

Anastasia’s perspective of her experience “New York was a whirlwind and I left with very mixed emotions,” Anastasia said. “I arrived in New York City on March 26 at the New Yorker Hotel as part of the second wave of healthcare workers. I was welcomed with open arms and we were able to organize roles and play up everyone’s individual strengths. I was an assistant for a 36-bed COVID ICU, intubating patients, leading codes, managing and troubleshooting ventilators and medications for sedation and blood pressure support, placing arterial and central lines, facilitating palliative care and so-

cial work for patients and families and doing anything to support the nursing staff.

“I take a lot of pride in my ICU nursing days and with the new change in Medicare ruling that CRNAs nationwide can practice independently, I was eager to provide excellent and safe care to all of the patients at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens.

“The days were 12 hours long and coming back to the hotel only reminded us that it was still pretty bare bones in terms of the infrastructure.

By bringing awareness of some of the basic necessities that were missing, Ashley and I rallied to try to make a positive change.

“I remember telling her how difficult it was to find fresh food to eat before 6 a.m. and after 8 p.m. when we’d get back to the hotel. New York City restaurants were not operating during those hours so you had to rely on drugstore snacks or a delivery service app that was bombarded with hundreds of deliveries at 8 p.m.

“One restaurant that was open was The Bread Factory around the corner from the New Yorker and they were so grateful to have our group staying

Gift of Hope offers ‘Cookies for Caregivers’ program Donations made to 25 area hospitals including Elmhurst There’s nothing like a good cookie to lift one’s spirits now and then. And during these unprecedented times, no one deserves a sweet token of appreciation more than the hundreds of Illinois frontline healthcare providers caring for COVID-19 patients.

That’s why the Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donor Network -- a not-for-profit organ procurement organization that coordinates organ and tissue donation and provides public education on donation in Illinois and northwest Indiana -- has launched the Cookies for Caregivers campaign, allowing the public to thank

these brave healthcare providers with a cookie and a note of gratitude.

Donations can be made at giftofhope.org/ cookie-for-caregivers on the Gift of Hope’s website in any denomination. In turn, Gift of Hope will use 100% of donations to buy cookies made as much as possible by local bakeries and deliver them to caregivers throughout Illinois.

To date, more than $4,000 in donations have resulted in cookies being delivered to healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients at 25 hospitals throughout Illinois -- including Elmhurst Hospital.

As a side note, April is National Donate Life Month and Gift of Hope is continuing its mission of securing safe and successful organ donations and supporting its network of hospital partners to ensure they are recovering and placing healthy organs during this pandemic.

“Ashley used her skills to build relationships with a catering company. We started getting coffee, snacks, small meals delivered to the hotel. An old friend named Maggie Cunningham reached out on Instagram -- her husband did the marketing for Brine Chicken and connected my husband Chase with one of the owners. The rest is history. Brine Chicken became one of our biggest partners sending more than 1900 meals directly to the hospitals! I LOVE BRINE CHICKEN -- it was nutrient dense, delicious and the perfect amount of food/fuel to get you through the day.

“Another girl named Leigh had started her own fundraiser, Coffee to the Frontlines, and she raised more than $24,000. She sent meals, coffee, etc., directly to the hospital. Her kindness was overflowing.

“The really incredible part of this whole experience was seeing a group of strangers come together during a crisis -- to help those of us fighting the disease to survive on the front lines for the sake of all of humanity. Just like a good attitude is contagious, I think helping people and seeing the difference it makes has a snowball effect on a community.

“Ashley went above and beyond. She hired a

designer to make a massive sign for the staffing company to boost morale. We changed the music in the hotel lobby to be more uplifting. It’s the little things sometimes that make you smile the most.

“Now that I am home in Minneapolis, it’s been hard to adjust. There is a lot of work to do still, but I know the wheels we set in motion will keep moving forward. Ashley is still working hard to get meals out to healthcare workers, and I have kept in contact with my colleagues at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens to see how it’s going. There is a lot of information being shared and I can only advocate for what I was a part of. It was scary at times and I would compare it to war. Still, we did our best and I know we saved lives.”

ECCI Proves ‘Essential’ to Elmhurst Businesses and Community Dear Elmhurst Residents and Businesses: While striving to adhere to the City of Elmhurst’s “Stay Home, Save Lives” mandate as best we can, the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry is working diligently (and safely) to help Elmhurst businesses both sustain operations financially and keep their workforce employed during the health care and economic crisis caused by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic.

In the past eight weeks, our Chamber has advocated on our member’s behalf to assure that federal, state and local agencies and elected officials—including United States Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois), U.S. House of Representatives member Mike Quigley (D-Illinois 5th District) and Illinois Senator Suzy Glowiak (D-24th District)—understand the economic damage that COVID-19 and related public policy have inflicted on the Elmhurst business community, not just our members.

ECCI has both supported the efforts of and shared information from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), Illinois Department of Economic Opportunity (IDCEO), Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES), Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Illinois State Treasurer’s Office, Illinois Chamber of Commerce, Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (IACCE), Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and more.

In partnership with the City of Elmhurst, our Chamber promoted Elmhurst restaurants and bars (see “Dine Out” From Home story) during the “Dine In” shutdown via our Chamber’s website, member e-mails, Facebook and Twitter social media pages, and display advertising in local newspapers. We also joined chambers of commerce across Illinois to promote IACCE’s statewide ‘IL’ove Local campaign (April 11-18) to rally consumer support of all small businesses. Nearly every day, a Facebook and Twitter post shines a spotlight on the good deeds of ECCI members, including promoting the efforts of “essential” businesses and encouraging e-commerce patronage of our non-essential small businesses.

In our Chamber’s role as a business educator, ECCI members receive near-daily updates on federal and state financial assistance programs available to small businesses and not-for-profit organizations via e-mails, which are then uploaded to our website’s home page (archived in News under the Community News tool bar link) and shared community-wide via Facebook and Twitter posts.

Hopefully, it won’t require another pandemic to prove how essential our Chamber is to both Elmhurst businesses and community.

The “Dine Out” From Home page features the name, address, phone number, hours of operation, both menu and online ordering (if an option) hyperlinks, and service delivery options for each of the participating restaurants and bars.

Beginning in the 2020-21 school year, a student’s athletic fee for a third sport will be waived.

The Tier 4 fee will rise from $250 this year to $275 in the 2020-21 school year. The sports with Tier 4 fees of $275 include basketball, football and golf. Sports with Tier 3 fees include baseball, bowling, gymnastics, softball, swimming and volleyball. Tier 3 fees will remain at $200 during the 2020-21 school year.

York freshman Keovan named to U.S. Speedskating long track junior development team Standout skater has sights set on junior world team appointment

York freshman Keith Keovan finished his competitive speedskating season on a high note.

Keovan recently was named to the 2020-2021 U.S. Speedskating long track junior development team. Keovan is the only Junior C (ages 13 and 14) group skater that made the team.

“You get named based on how you did throughout the season,” Keovan said. “It was kind of a goal. It was really nice making it and being recognized on the team. I was pretty much the youngest kid.”

Keovan noted that with this designation, some of his traveling costs will now be reimbursed, plus he will get invited to some elite camps. “The camps will probably be in Utah and Milwaukee,” he said.

Keovan gave himself solid marks when critiquing his 2019-2020 season. “I felt like I did pretty well this season,” he said. “My overall skating ability and speed improved along with my times. I am going to keep working toward next season and hopefully I will keep getting better.”

Keovan said his trip to Utah this past season for a competition was his most enjoyable one. There, he won the U.S. Junior C (14 and under) title at the U.S. Speedskating long track championships.

“I liked going to Utah,” he said.

“It’s really fun because I enjoy going out to the mountains.”

Keovan said the COVID-19

stoppage hasn’t really affected his speedskating regimen because the season has concluded.

“Everything is shut down,” he said. “I’m doing some workouts at home, and hopefully if everything pans out, I will start training with my club team in June in Milwaukee. Even if we weren’t shut down, I would be resting. Our coach emails us a plan to do workouts throughout the week and you do those at home.

If everything was normal I would do that and probably go for bike rides.

At this time of the year you do more stuff off the ice because they melt the ice during the summer. The only thing different right now is I normally would be doing weights in the gym, but now I do home workouts.”

Keovan will be on the move at the end of this month, he said, with the plan being for him to move up to Milwaukee the last week of May, “which would be when I get out of school,” he said.

“It would be just during the season. I will do online classes so I can train a bit more. We’re still figuring it all out. We’re looking for online schooling programs that will be beneficial for me. My mom wants me focusing on school work.”

Keovan noted the travel between Elmhurst and Milwaukee during the season has been arduous. “I was only able to go three times a week or so,” she said. “It’s a hassle for my mom to drive me up there. We have family up in Milwaukee so that won’t be too bad. I will live with them and train every day.”

Keovan said he’s adapted to the York e-learning schedule during the pandemic. “It’s been pretty easy,” he said. “I get it done in less than two hours usually,” he said.

IC Catholic Prep’s Guinan earns all-state academic status Senior played five sports for Knights

IC Catholic Prep senior Annie Guinan has been a fixture on athletic fields — and boats (more on that in a second) — all four years of her high school career.

More importantly, she’s been even more adept in the classroom.

Guinan’s efforts with her studies have resulted in her being named to the Illinois High School Association all-state academic honorable mention team.

Every IHSA member school was invited to nominate one female student and one male student. Nominees needed to possess a minimum 3.50 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale after their seventh semester, have participated in at least two IHSA-sponsored sports or activities during each of the last two years and demonstrated outstanding citizenship.

“It was a pretty unexpected thing,” Guinan told the Independent. “We were on our senior retreat, which was four days and was a lot of fun and nice to be able to get it done before all the craziness set in. When I got back our athletic director said I should apply for it. I got the appli-

cation done and got it back to him.

I didn’t expect anything of it. It’s an awesome thing to receive.”

Guinan said academics have always been at the forefront for her.

“Definitely, academics come first,” she said. “That’s always been the case in my family, and with IC student-athletes, academics are always first. It’s very important at IC.” Guinan noted her favorite subjects weren’t based on what the class was about. “It depended on who taught it,” she said. “I really enjoyed English and calculus, and AP U.S. history also was good. I mean a subject can be very interesting or uninteresting depending on how it is taught.

Fortunately at IC there are a lot of good teachers.”

She added academic excellence hasn’t always been a walk in the park. “Certain classes you have to put a little more time into,” she said.

“For the most part, school has been something I have been alright at.”

Athletically, Guinan played volleyball her freshman and sophomore years, and then hit the cross country trails sophomore through senior years. She played basketball and soccer at the school all four years — making her a four-year, three-sport athlete.

And then there is bass fishing, an IHSA-sanctioned sport. Guinan also

partook in that craft this past fall for the Knights.

“I did a brief stint with the bass fishing team last fall,” she said. “I wasn’t able to do cross country at the beginning of the year and did bass fishing for a bit. Once I got back from my injury I did cross country again.”

So why bass fishing?

“I didn’t need to use my knee,” she said. “I wanted to stay involved some way.”

Had Guinan ever partook in the art of fishing before?

“Not really, no,” she said. “It was fun. I had tons of fun doing it. It’s

Workers present letter of demand On Friday, May 1, workers from LSL Healthcare, Inc. were scheduled to present a letter of demand to the company owners demanding more safety measures be put in place following the death of a co-worker from COVID-19.

The workers claim LSL owners and management refused to shut down production and have placed their health and their lives at risk.

Their workplace has suffered from rat infestations, the organizers claim, and they have prohibited by management from calling an ambulance in the case of any workplace injuries.

The demand letter includes a twoweek paid quarantine period during which time the work environment is to be fully cleaned and sanitized, following by a regular ongoing cleaning

Workers contacted local organization Arise Chicago seeking support to take action to protect their lives. They have reported long-time health hazards and abusive treatment. Worker frustration of poor treatment turned to fear for their lives after a co-worker contracted Covid-19 and died.

The company never communicated the news and have in fact denied that the death occurred to its workers.

completely different than any other sport. You wake up at the crack of dawn and go on the lake with a bunch of people. I thought it was cool.”

Guinan had different answers for her favorite sport and the one she is the best at.

“Whatever season I was in at the moment,” is how she answered the favorite sport question. “Which one am I the best at? Tough question.

Probably soccer or basketball.”

On the basketball floor, first-year Knights coach Todd Fisher wishes he could continue to coach Guinan.

“I only knew her for one year, but I wish she could play more,” Fisher said of the team’s starting point guard. “She’s a great kid. We will miss her.”

As far as life after IC Catholic Prep, Guinan, whose older brothers Tom and Patrick graduated from IC Catholic Prep, said she is choosing between Notre Dame and the University of Virginia to continue her studies. Any kind of sporting endeavor, she said at the college level, would involve clubs.

“I want to study engineering,” she said. “With Norte Dame and Virginia, Notre Dame is a smaller school campus and I want that. That’s what I know. Virginia is a very good school.”

Guinan said she’s making good use of her time during the COVID-19 lockdown. “I would say I’m keeping busy and active,” she said. “It’s very easy to fall into a state of stupor and stay in bed all day. You have to get out of bed and get out there and exercise. The hard part is not being able to see friends. It’s very difficult.”

During her shelter-in-place time, Guinan has tried to teach herself how to play the piano. “I have read a lot, done a little bit of crafts, and my grandma is trying to teach me how to sew,” she said. “I also just watched the latest season of Peaky Blinders, which I love. It’s a Netflix show

Guinan and her IC Catholic Prep do see some light at the end of the tunnel before calling it a day on Prospect Street. “We’re still holding out hope,” she said. “Right now, we have a senior weekend planned in July that will have a last day of school-type thing with graduation and prom. We’re hoping that stays a possibility.”

Regardless, Guinan said she will leave IC Catholic Prep with plenty of memories and knowledge. “I would say I will remember my friends and my teammates and the memories we have made,” she said. “Some of my closest friends I have known since preschool.”

Guinan added she will walk out of IC Catholic Prep a much better person than when she walked in. “IC has a particular emphasis on developing more than just academics and athletics,” she said. “It’s you as a person, mind, body and spirit. It’s definitely an advantage having that extra attention to who you are and who you have become. IC gives you that extra attention as a human being instead of just academics and athletics. They are very service-oriented with helping others. It was definitely the right choice and has been the right place for me.”

Proceeds from the ticket sales of the Elmhurst Garden Club (EGC) Garden Walk & Faire go to fully support scholarships to Illinois college and university students studying horticulture, landscape architecture, botany and environmental studies; to York Community High School students for experiential science programs; and to Elmhurst Park District children’s summer camps. Proceeds have also go toward local endeavors including Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition for public environmental programs; mentoring York High School Garden Club; maintaining landscaping at Churchville Schoolhouse; holiday decorating of Elmhurst Public Library; contributing to horticultural development at Elmhurst College Arboretum; maintaining the Herb Garden in Wilder Park; and improving and maintaining campus appearance at the Elmhurst Ray Graham Learning Center.

Elmhurst Garden Club (EGC) awarded its York High School Exploratory/Experiential Summer Scholarship to two York students this year, sophomore Katelyn Guerra, and junior, Abigail LeSage.

“Part of [EGC’s] mission is to provide scholarships to further horticulture, conservation, landscape design and science education,” stated EGC Scholarship Chair, Pat O’Dwyer.

“The goal of our high school scholarship is to encourage exploration in these areas of interest in a formalized setting -- such as a summer program, internship, or college course -- to give the student a hands-on experience.

“Historically, we have selected a single recipient. This year, because we received so many qualified applicants, each selecting such fascinating educational experiences, our scholarship committee was delighted to award two scholarships. It is unfortunate the summer programs selected by these young women are cancelled.

Nonetheless, we want to acknowledge their accomplishments.”

Abigail has been a shining star during her three years in York’s Garden Club. It did not take long to realize how valuable Abi was to the [Garden] Club and her fellow club members.”

Abigail stated she likes how hands-on the club is.

“You can really see what a difference you can make with gardening,” she said. “Looking at the before and after pictures of [York’s] courtyard is very satisfying.”

Finding a sliver of silver lining during this pandemic, Abigail stated that she has plenty of time to work in her home garden.

“My perennials are doing well.

I haven’t planted anything yet, because there is still a threat for frost, but I look forward to doing that soon.”

While the gifts have been generous, every bit of it is needed. Most often, paying a family’s rent for the month costs EWAN $1,000, the most they can grant per family. A gift of $10,000 covers ten families for one month.

Many people have inquired about the fate of EWAN’s ‘Cue for a Cause, its biggest fundraising event held each year the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend. The decision on whether or not they will host the event is still on hold.

It’s not surprising that high-achieving York High School senior Regan Toole is not backing away from her plans to major in community health in college, even with the frightening and uncertain backdrop of COVID-19. Toole, who will attend University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the fall, is the first female ever from York to earn the coveted Chick Evans Scholarship, which awards full housing and college tuition renewable for four years.

Not only does she have a weighted 4.5 GPA and a 28 ACT, the recently-named Evans Scholar’s resume is loaded with service, leadership and extracurricular involvement including National Honor Society, Key Club, Monocle Nation, tennis and badminton, freshman mentorship, York Student Advisory Board, and peer coach.

“I coached the Special Olympics Basketball team at York and we were headed down state for the first time ever,” she said. “This was very devastating for everyone because we all

worked so hard, especially the athletes. My badminton season was also canceled, which was heartbreaking after all of my offseason hard work and our team’s past success. However, right now I am continuing to stay positive…York has not officially canceled prom or graduation yet, and so I am hoping that we can have those at a later date to see all of my classmates together one last time.”
