District 205 allocated $4.1 million in ESSER funds; uses $1.24M so far Federal program addresses impact of pandemic on schools

The meeting of Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held on Tuesday, April 26 featured a presentation about how the district plans to spend its Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Act (ESSER) funds. The federal ES-

SER funds are related to addressing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since March 2020, the district has been allocated about $4.1 million in supplemental federal spending. The district has so far spent about $1.24 million of that funding. The district is developing a plan on how to spend

the remaining $2.9 million in funding. The $2.9 million in funds remaining includes about $2.1 million in ESSER III funding. The district hasn’t spent any of the approximate $2.1 million.

The district has received about $956,000 in ESSER II funding.

District 205 has so far spent about

$677,000 of its ESSER II funds. At the outset of the pandemic, the district spent about $283,000 on personal protective equipment (PPE), technology purchases and other expenses.

The district recently learned that it would be receiving a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant for about $279,000, which will

reimburse the district for most of its purchases made at the start of the pandemic.

The ESSER III funding must be spent by September of 2024, and at least 20 percent of the funding must address learning loss through the implementation of evidence-based interventions.

Elmhurst University bands to perform spring concert

On Monday, May 9, the Elmhurst University Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will be presenting their annual Spring Concert in Hammerschmidt Chapel at 7 p.m. In addition, Elmhurst University and the Elmhurst University Music Department will be welcoming and featuring their new Professor of Saxophone Matthew Beck and also recognizing the retirement of the current Chair of the Music Department, Dr. Peter Griffin.

The Symphonic Band portion of the concert will feature a springtime favorite of the wind band repertoire, The Hounds of Spring

by Alfred Reed. Percy Grainger’s Australian Up-Country Tune will be followed by another staple of the wind band repertoire, Fanfare and Allegro by Clifton Williams.

The Wind Ensemble will open the concert with the most popular overture performed worldwide, Leonard Bernstein’s vibrant Overture to Candide. Professor of Sax-

ophone Matthew Beck will be featured on one of the most challenging and virtuosic works recently added to the saxophone repertoire, Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Wind Ensemble composed by John Mackey. The Wind Ensemble portion of the concert will conclude with a piece that the great composer Paul Hindemith requested be transcribed for wind band by his colleague at Yale University Keith Wilson, the incomparable Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber. The concert will conclude with John Philip Sousa’s Manhattan Beach March, performed as the Wind Ensemble’s tribute to retiring Chair of the Music Department Dr. Peter Griffin who will also serve as the guest conductor for the march Admission is free. Timothy Christian to break ground on $7 million stadium complex On Monday morning the Elmhurst Independent learned that Timothy Christian Schools would be hosting a groundbreaking celebration on Saturday, May 7 from 5-9 p.m.

The private, nondenominational school, located on 23-acres in south Elmhurst is building a $7 million soccer and track stadium that will put them among the elite for sport complexes. The new stadium will include artificial turf, lighting, sound, press box, tennis

William H. Ouellette William “Bill” Ouellette of Elmhurst passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 3, 2022. Bill, the son of George and Emma Ouellette, was born on September 16, 1924 in New Haven, Ct. Following his graduation from Hillhouse High School in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp. Upon his graduation from flight school, Bill piloted the B-17 Flying Fortress from 1943 until the end of World War II. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, Bill enrolled in the University of Bridgeport, graduating with a BS in Engineering. He joined Raybestos Manhattan, Inc. holding multiple positions until his retirement in 1986. In 1949, Bill married Grace, his loving wife of almost 73 years, the former Grace DuPont Peterson. He is survived

by Grace, his two sons, Robert and Glenn, daughter-in-law Sue, three grandchildren, Camille (David Cotts), Matthew and Michael (Kellie), and great-granddaughter Eviee. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ernest J. Pett, Sr., 88 Ernest J. Pett, Sr., formerly of Elmhurst, passed away recently at the age of 88. Cherished husband of Eleanore “Ellie” Pett, nee Mitchell; beloved father of Nina (Jeff) Tamm, Ernest Jr. “J.R.” (Donna) Pett, Ken (Kim Kielczynski) Pett, former father-in-law of Lori Nixon Pett; loving grandfather of Brianna Tamm, Devon Tamm, Lauren Tamm, Jeffrey (Brenda) Pett, and Lois Pett; dear brother of the late Frank Petkunas, and the late Casimir “Chuck” Petkunas; uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Ernie was born in Chicago in 1933 to Ludwig and Julia Petkunas.

He met Ellie, the love of his life, in 1953 and they married in 1955.

He and Ellie started their family the following year and raised three children who blessed them with 5 grandchildren. Ernie and Ellie celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in February!

ECCI seeks donations through May for Civic Hall of Fame Memorial

The ECCI Centennial Celebration NFP, an Internal Revenue Service (IRS)-designated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, has selected the month of May to solicit tax-deductible gifts to fund a Civic Hall of Fame Public Memorial.

The Civic HOF memorial will feature a TouchPros Touch Wall interactive, touch-screen TV monitor (55 to 70 inches) on which users can view biographies, photographs and video clips of each of the inductees, and will be installed in a publicly-accessible location (to be determined).

In August of 2021, the NFP purchased more than $15K in TouchPros hardware and software for development of a Civic HOF public memorial, which will feature a TouchWall interactive, touch-screen TV monitor (65 inches) on which users can view biographies, photographs and video clips of each of the inductees.

A Civic HOF website will go live later this year and the TouchWall is expected to be installed at a temporary site by year’s end.

Created in honor of ECCI’s 100th Anniversary in 2018, the ECCI Centennial Celebration NFP’s one-of-a-kind $250,000 Capital Campaign has raised some $300K for the Ralph P. Pechanio Student Internship Endowment Fund at Elmhurst University versus a goal of $150K, exceeded the Second Century Fund’s $50K goal and collected more than $25K towards the $50K Civic HOF goal since 2016.

Since its creation in 1992 as part of the Opening Ceremonies at Elmfest, the Civic HOF has inducted 32 businesspeople, community volunteers and elected officials. Since Elmfest’s end in 2009, inductees have been honored at ECCI’s Annual Awards Gala in all but one of those years.

He worked at countless Lions conventions around the world which led him and Ellie to travel to many places such as Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Thailand, Mexico, and Hong Kong, as well as many domestic locations. He was drawn to the service that Lions Clubs provided and became a longtime member and leader of several Lions Clubs from the Elmhurst Evening Club to the club in Donna, Texas. His service to Lions Clubs was recognized when he was honored to receive the Melvin Jones Award which is the highest form of recognition bestowed on Lions and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism.

After their children were grown, Ernie and Ellie expanded their horizons with the purchase of a Hi-Lo camping trailer which started a 30year adventure travelling around the country with the many friends they made in the Hi-Lo Friends Trailer Club. Eventually they found the perfect place to spend the cold winter months. They became snow-

birds and traveled every winter to Donna, Tex., in the Rio Grande Valley, where they made many new lifelong friends and enjoyed the activities and warm climate.

Ernie’s last years were challenged with Alzheimer’s disease and as the disease progressed, he lost the strength to walk which led to many physical difficulties that left him bedridden for the last nine months of his life. Ernie was a gentle giant and everyone that met him instantly liked him. His good heart and kind soul were a blessing to many but especially to his family. While saddened, his family is grateful that his suffering ended and he was called home to his Savior where he was reunited with beloved family and friends that have gone before him.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a regular meeting on April 26 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven board members attended the meeting.

Churchville’s PLTW program recognized The spotlight/recognition portion of the meeting included a presentation about Churchville Middle School’s experience with the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program. Project Lead the Way is an organization that develops STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) curricula for use by elementary, middle and high schools. Churchville began its involvement with the Project Lead the Way program in the 2018-19 school year. Churchville teacher Peter Richey referred to a recent PLTW initiative in which some of the school’s students were tasked with creating a therapeutic toy for a child with cerebral palsy.

Student services update The board meeting also included an update about student services in the district. Dr. Kevin Rubenstein, the district’s assistant superintendent for student services, provided the update. Rubenstein noted that about 15 percent of District 205 students (approximately 1,400 students) are eligible for special education and related services. Rubenstein added that about 70 percent of the district’s students who are receiving special education services are in general education classes during most of the typical school day.

Rubenstein noted that the district will provide programming this summer for its early childhood through eighth-grade students at no cost. He said that the district could allocate about $541,000 in ESSER III funding to offer summer 2022 programming for district students. Other potential ESSER III funding items could include virtual teachers and tutoring through 2023 ($670,000).

The district is also considering several additional expenses that could be covered by ESSER III funding, including a project to improve ventilation at the Bridges Transition Center and an internet connectivity project for district families.

Students honored • The meeting’s spotlight/recognition segment also recognized the District 205 students whose entries were selected for the national level of the PTA Reflections competition in May. • The board also recognized the York High School students whose artwork was featured at the Illinois High School Art Exhibition (IHSAE) in March. Those York students included Caroline Dorion (drawing), Nikita Sidoryk (painting), Mary Braden (photography), Nicole Niemi (design) and Dana Delaney (mixed media). Dorion, Sidoryk, Jake Barnhart, Ava Eisa, Abby LaMorte and Emma Wheatland were recognized at the IHSAE Senior Scholarship Exhibition for receiving more than $1 million in combined scholarship offers.

The 17-percent increase is needed to help address driver shortages, higher gas costs and other expenses. The district has paid First Student, Inc. over $2.25 million so far during the current school year. The board also unanimously approved an extension of its contract with Cottage Hill Operating

Company, which provides special education transportation services to the district. The extension for the 2022-23 school year will reflect a 13-percent increase. That increase is also related to driver shortages and higher fuel costs.

The district has paid Cottage Hill Operating Company nearly $1 million so far during the current school year.

Assault, battery April 26 Police said a reporting officer met with the nurse manager in the 100 block of W. Diversey at midnight, who reported a physical confrontation occurred between a nurse and a patient.

Both the nurse and the patient had minor injuries. This case is pending investigation.

April 23 Daryl G. Westergren, 63, of Lombard, was charged with battery at a restaurant in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at 6:42 p.m. Police said the victim and suspect engaged in a verbal argument in the parking lot of the restaurant.

The suspect allegedly slapped the victim in the face.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass April 26 Latrell King, 30 of Westmont, was charged with trespassing at a gas station in the 200 block of E. Butterfield at 5:05 a.m. Police said officers responded to the station for a suspicious person inside. According to police, officers located King and served him with a no-trespass notice. Police said King returned to the premise moments later in violation of the trespass notice.

April 22-April 25 Police said an unknown suspect damaged four fire extinguisher cases in the Addison parking garage sometime between the above dates. Loose drywall screws and garbage were also dumped on the ramps.

April 13 A victim in the 400 block of W. St. Charles reports they located damage to a garage with several bricks broken out of place.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance, dispute April 47 Attempted burglary was reported at a pharmacy in the 100 block of N. Robert Palmer at 5:40 a.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for the report of a burglary which had just occurred. The reporting officer met with the complainant who reported an unknown suspect forced entry to the business through a front glass door. The suspect was confronted by an employee and fled the scene in a gray Land Rover. This case is pending investigation.

April 25 Police said officers responded to the 800 block of S. Poplar at 1:10 p.m. for the report of a domestic battery. A reporting officer met with the complainant who reported she observed an unknown male punching an unknown female near her neighbor’s residence.

The complainant stated both subjects entered a white SUV and left eastbound on Butterfield Road. Officers checked the area but were met

A 30-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 100 block of N. Addison at 6:21 p.m. A reporting officer met with the victim who reported his sister punched him in the face and bit his arm.

The victim sustained visible injuries to his left forearm.

April 19-April 20 A complainant and suspect are currently going through a divorce. The complainant believes the suspect stole his passport, Social Security card and other documents. The suspect denies taking any of the documents.

DUI, DUI-drugs, transportation of open alcohol, possession of open alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor April 27 Joanna Pruszynski, 26, of Downers Grove, was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Addison and Grantley at 8:22 p.m.

April 25 Luis Daniel Andrade-Lopez, 40, of Hanover Park, was charged with no valid driver’s license, improper turn, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of open alcohol in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop in the 900 block of N. York at 12:46 a.m.

Nicholas Stokes-Howard, 24, of Maywood, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of open alcohol in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near Addison and North at 12:11 a.m.

April 24 Manuel Perez-Licona, 37, of Villa Park, was charged with illegal transportation of open alcohol and operating a vehicle while using an electronic communication device subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Berteau at 9:26 p.m.

Juan Villar-Garcia, 24, of Wheeling, was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, illegal transportation of open alcohol, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and I-290 at 2:45 a.m.

April 23 Gerardo Anaya, 28, of Aurora, was charged with DUI, driving while license revoked, failure to reduce speed to avoid and accident, improper lane usage and possession of open alcohol near York and Crestview at 1:01 a.m.

The reporting officer spoke with the suspect who denied making any threatening statements and further stated he does not know the complainant’s contact information. The suspect was advised to not have any contact with the complainant.

April 22 A complainant in the 900 block of S. Spring and a suspect are involved in a divorce. The complainant states the suspect threatened her via text. The complainant was advised to obtain an Order of Protection and to contact 911 if she feels threatened. The suspect denies making any kind of threats.

A victim near Route 83 and St. Charles told police at 2:58 p.m. she was waiting for traffic to pass so she could pull out of a bank parking lot onto St. Charles. The vehicle behind her began honking its car horn at her. When they pulled up to the red light, a a suspect described as a large white male walked up to her driver side window, banged his hand on the glass and walked back to his vehicle. An investigation is pending.

March 1-April 21 A complainant in the 100 block of S. Chandler told police that the suspect has been sending the complainant harassing text messages between the above dates. The complainant wants the suspect to cease all communication with him. The reporting officer contacted the suspect and advised him to cease all communication with the complainant.

Possession of cannabis in a vehicle

The Elmhurst Police Department said last week that the following individuals were issued citations for possession of cannabis by either a driver or a passenger in a vehicle: Rayneisha A. Pirtle, 29, of DeKalb and Arbriana S. Britton, 21, of Rockford near York and Lake at 7:06 p.m. April 22; Dasaray Simmons, 23, of Bartlett and Nicole Garardi, 27, of Melrose Park near North and Melrose at 9:59 p.m.

April 24; and Branden K. Dickeson, 47, of Bensenville, near North and Route 83 at 7:02 p.m.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery April 27 Theft was reported in the 400 block of Spring at 5:16 p.m. A victim told police that after having her vehicle detailed, her gray magnetic phone charger was missing from her vehicle. The victim does not wish to pursue complaints.

April 26 According to police, a victim in the 200

block of W. Lake told police at 3:55 p.m. that he was approached by suspects who offered to do concrete painting and repaving for the victim’s business. Police said the suspects are known to be involved in traveler scams.

Helen Miller, 51, and Sheila Miller, 47, both of Rolling Meadows, and Alex Miller, 26, of Schaumburg, were issued citations for illegal transient merchant violations and were each issued a no-trespass notice.

Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of S. York at 4:17 p.m. A victim related an unknown suspect used his personal information to open a fraudulent T-Mobile account.

April 25 Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of E. St. Charles at 11:02 a.m. A victim reports an unknown suspect used her personal information to open several bank and credit card accounts.

Theft was reported in the 1200 block of S. York at 5:55 p.m. A victim related while at the above location, she removed her Series 4 Apple watch. She left the watch in the changing room and forgot it upon leaving. The watch was not turned in.

A victim reported that an unknown suspect removed cash and credit cards from his wallet which was in a secured gym locker in the 600 block of N. York at 4:35 p.m. The victim contacted his bank and was advised of a transaction attempt. The transaction was declined and the victim was able to cancel his credit cards.

April 24 Theft was reported at a gas station in the 400 block of N. York at 5 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect, described as an Hispanic male, pumped gas into his vehicle and drove off without paying. After checking video footage, it was determined that the vehicle did not have any plates on it.

April 22-April 23 Theft was reported near Schiller and Willow at 8:20 a.m. Police said three stop signs and posts were stolen from Schiller and Willow.

April 22 Deceptive practice was reported in the 300 block of S. York at 12:14 p.m. A complainant received a phone call from an unknown person claiming they were representing ComEd. The caller stated the complainant owed ComEd money and if she did not pay, service would immediately be shut off. The complainant’s daughter contacted ComEd, which verified the account was not delinquent and not to provide any banking information.

April 17-April 22 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of N. Michigan. A victim reports an unknown suspect(s) used his LINK card benefits without his permission between the above dates.

A total of eight transactions were made. LINK was notified that the charges were fraudulent.

April 12-April 13 Theft was reported in the 1000 block of Euclid at 11:17 a.m. A victim’s daughter reports the victim is missing her diamond and sapphire ring. This case is pending investigation.

April 8 Theft was reported in the 500 block of Lamont at 11:46 a.m. A suspect’s employment was terminated, and he has failed to return the victim’s company vehicle. An investigation is pending.

April 7 Theft was reported in the 200 block of E. Grantley at 1:21 p.m. During the victim’s

Lombard man gets 10 years for conspiracy to commit terrorism Three years added for possession of child pornography DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin has announced that a Lombard man has entered a plea of guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit terrorism (Class 1 Felony).

Christian Frazee, 27, appeared Christian Frazee in court in front of Judge Michael Reidy, who accepted Frazee’s guilty plea and sentenced him to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).

Additionally, Frazee entered a guilty plea to one count of possession of child pornography (Class 2 felony) for which he was sentenced to an additional three years in the IDOC to be served concurrently.

On June 1, 2020, Frazee appeared in bond court on attempt terrorism charges and his bond was at $1 million with 10 percent to apply. On June 30, 2020, he posted bond and was released.

On Dec. 24, 2020, Frazee again appeared in bond court on the child pornography charges where bond was set at $250,000 with 10 percent

to apply in accordance with a previously issued arrest warrant. He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time.

During the weekend of May 31, 2020, Lombard police maintained extra patrol as a result of rioting and looting that took place in Chicago, the surrounding suburbs, as well as other major cities across the country.

At approximately 12:27 a.m. on June 1, 2020, a Lombard police officer observed a male dressed in all black wearing a hood, face covering and latex gloves walking near the village hall and then in the direction of the Village of Lombard municipal campus with a bat hanging from his bag.

The subject, later identified as Frazee, was walking in the direction of the squad cars and employee vehicles holding a lighter in his left hand and a Molotov cocktail in his right hand. Frazee also had a butane torch lighter and seven additional lighters in his possession.

Frazee was taken into custody at this time and charged with one count of possession of an incendiary device and one count of attempt terrorism.

Both charges are a Class 1 felony.

“Judge Reidy’s sentence sends the message that criminal activity under

the guise of legitimate protests is still criminal activity and will not be tolerated in DuPage County. I thank the Lombard Police Department for their truly outstanding work on this case. I thank the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as well as United States Attorney John Lausch and his office for their assistance.”

Frazee will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

Gratitude in the everyday

Today I was overwhelmed by a feeling of gratitude. This isn’t a given for me at this point in my life.

Sometimes I feel the opposite of gratitude; for that I am sorry.

I have been given much. I have been loved much. My life, for the most part has been wonderful. I was born in a country where much is wonderful and much is taken for granted.

I flip the light switch and my room is illuminated, any time day or night all 365 days of the year. I turn on the faucet and have access to an unlimited amount of clean drinking water. Sometimes I am so entitled I think my clean drinking water isn’t good enough and I purchase water that is purported to be even cleaner.

Showering every day is a given not a luxury.

I have machines that wash my clothes, dishes and floors. I have a reliable car that starts when I turn the key. It brings me to the superstore where I have practically unlimited access to food. This car operates on gasoline. Sometimes I complain about the prices, but I can purchase as much as I want, so long as I have the money or credit card. I have a bed to sleep on every night. It has comfy pillows and blankets. I’ve been sleeping well.

I have a roof over my head. When it rains I don’t worry about getting wet. When it is very cold I have heat to keep me warm. When it is very hot I have air conditioning to keep me cool.

My fridge and cupboards hold more than enough food for me to eat.

I can chose what I eat every day based on what I’m craving or what sounds good. I have the luxury of thinking about diet and exercise and how they can keep me healthy. I have the time to improve both in my life.

And I haven’t touched on the two most important aspects of all: people and nature.

I have friends and family who love me. Yeah, they do and I know it without a shadow of a doubt. My

kids and grandkids want to spend time with me. They value my existence that much. How beyond wonderful is that?

This morning, the birds were singing. The squirrels in my backyard were putting on a play show for my benefit. The sun was shining half the day, never mind the other half. When the clouds appeared they moved in the sky like they didn’t have a care in the world, which I’m pretty sure they didn’t.

Clouds float, rivers flow. Nature takes its course. We should be like nature. We should flow freely with the current and not cling to the rocks along the shore. The rocks only hold us back from what we are meant to be. They may feel secure and steady, but they won’t help us move forward.

They don’t aid in getting us to our destination. Only the current can do that.

Tonight I am feeling thankful.

Sometimes I cling to the rocks, even though I know that won’t get me anywhere. I am human. We all are human.

I have lost people I love, and that hurts, but it is a blessing as well. To love is a blessing. Period. To love is to know you (or someone you love) will lose, in the biggest of ways. Love is the precursor to loss, but it is magical just the same.

Tonight I am feeling thankful. For life. For sunshine. For a good night’s sleep. For love that’s here right now and for love that continues on forever.

Counting my blessings. I think it’s a good thing to do.

Early prostate screenings save lives

pandemic has made this grim reality even worse. Researchers estimate 10 million cancer (all types) screenings were missed during the pandemic.

In Illinois, we have an opportunity to turn the tide on early detection. The Illinois Senate is poised to pass House Bill 5318, which will require insurers to cover prostate cancer screenings without copays, deductibles, and any other cost sharing.

Cost should not be a barrier for men to get an early diagnosis. Fortunately for me, I had good insurance and cost was not a factor when I was diagnosed, but this is not true for everyone facing a prostate cancer diagnosis.

Given the significant success of treatment, getting tested should be a no-brainer. There is no disputing that when it comes to prostate cancer – early detection saves lives.

During my tenure as a volunteer for ZERO, I have had the opportunity to speak to many men about my experience and how early detection saved my life. Unfortunately, some of the people I meet in my advocacy group are not so lucky. I have a friend through ZERO whose prostate cancer was not detected and, sadly, he will likely succumb to it in the not-too-distant future.

My friend’s story and my story could not be more different. Early detection is the pathway to a longer life.

No one ever wants to be told they have cancer.

A cancer diagnosis hits hard and cuts deep. I know because I was diagnosed with prostate cancer 12 years ago. I know that gut wrenching feeling well because I lived it.

I know the sleepless nights wondering about the future and wondering how much time I had to spend with my kids. I never expected to hear the word cancer when I went to the doctor’s office, but there it was, staring me in the face.

I was 47 years old at the time. My diagnosis was an accident. My doctor mistakenly checked off the box for a PSA test, even though I wasn’t the proper age for insurance coverage for the screening.

Based on the biopsy, I opted for a prostatectomy sooner rather than later and the pathology report came back as stage 3 prostate cancer.

What was devastating news at the time became the very thing that saved my life. Because my cancer was detected and because I was able to treat it, I am alive today. Had I waited until age 50 to get screened, the outcome likely would have been different.

Reader frowns on fringe group’s attempts to discredit D205

Over the last few weeks, I’ve seen a constant attack on our schools from a local parent group that seems bent on discrediting our curriculum and teachers. They have disguised their position as needing transparency in schools and a want to raise our student’s grades and school rankings, which they claim are falling in the presence of SEL being taught in the classroom. My focus is not to promote this group further, but to make it clear they are a minority, but with the biggest mouth perpetuating misinformation. They are part of a coordinated national push to discredit our public schools. This has made its way to our town, but I’m happy to see so many local residents pushing back on their ideology and non-stop attacks.

We cannot let their view of what should or shouldn’t be taught in our schools dominate the conversation.

There are many more of us out here who support our district, curriculum, teachers and students. Far more of us than this loud-mouthed fringe group riding the coattails of a national push to discredit our U.S. public schools.

On Thursday, April 28, the Late Night Blues Vocal Jazz Ensemble performed a benefit concert for Ukraine at Elmhurst Hall in downtown Elmhurst. The evening included an art auction and a woman with ties to Ukraine who gave an overview of the current situation.

TC Mock Trial Team wins State, heads to Nationals For the eighth time in school history, the Timothy Christian Mock Trial team won the Illinois State Championship and is headed to Nationals.

At the 2022 State competition, the Timothy Christian Mock Trial team fought past much larger schools such as Addison Trail and Niles North in the regular rounds. Then it defeated Naperville North in the final round, which featured the top eight teams in the state.

Part theater, part law, Mock Trial competitions pit two teams head-tohead as the plaintiff and defense in a simulated court case, where the students act as the lawyers and witnesses.

They perform in full court dress and are judged by actual judges and lawyers. They are each given affidavits, which they must learn. They also write and memorize all their own direct examinations, cross-examinations, and opening and closing statements, all while properly applying federal rules of evidence.

The preparation starts in the fall when the court case is released. This year the case involved a lawsuit against a summer camp when a nighttime hike ended with a horrific fall that resulted in a camper becoming a quadriplegic. To provide the team with expert and technical leadership, coach Scott Roelofs brought on assistant coach Cathy McNeil Stein, the Chief of the Civil Actions Bureau of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, 19 years ago. Her expertise has proved invaluable and key to the team’s success.

Once in court, or rather a Mock Trial competition, students must be quick

with responses, understand when and how to object to the other side, have composure, and demonstrate excellent oratorical skills. While the direct examination between Timothy’s lawyer and witness is scripted, the cross-examination is not. “You never know what the other team will do,” veteran coach Mr. Roelofs says. “You have to be able to think on your feet under a lot of pressure.”

Throughout the season, the 2022 State Champion Mock Trial team proved to be a formidable opponent.

They placed second at the North Suburban Bar Association Tournament, third at the Northwest Suburban Bar Association Tournament, and won the South Elgin Tournament.

But it was at the State Tournament where they really shined. According to Mr. Roelofs, the team won by a “large

margin.” The starting lineup consisted of senior attorney Leah Tornow, senior attorney Jonathan Pae, senior attorney/witness Kaitlyn Radoha, senior witness Katelyn Butt, senior attorney David Sianghio, and junior witness Ian Sianghio. Junior Roslyn Steiner was the timekeeper and senior Paige Detzler, juniors Jaida Lester, Aiden Hoogstra, sophomores Payton Frens, Daniella Ebeid, and freshman Mat-

thew Gritters rounded out the squad.

For the first time in Timothy Mock Trial history, two brothers were recognized as All-State. Junior Ian Sianghio won an Outstanding Witness award and senior David Sianghio won an Outstanding Attorney award. It’s worth noting that the Sianghio brothers followed in the footsteps of older brother John, who was a three-time State Champion in 2002-04.

County Mental Health Court graduates record number of students

Chief Judge Kenneth L. Popejoy announced that the DuPage County Mental Illness Court Alternative Program (MICAP) conducted a graduation ceremony honoring 22 participants in the largest Problem-Solving Court graduation class in the history of the 18th Judicial Circuit.

Judge Paul Marchese presided over the ceremony which was held live

and simulcast via Zoom. Chief Judge Popejoy attended the ceremony along with DuPage County State’s Attorney, Bob Berlin, and DuPage County Public Defender, Jeff York. The audience included family, friends, prosecutors, defense attorneys and police officers, including the arresting officers of many of the participants.

York girls track athletes compete in Oregon Relays

Six York girls track and field athletes had quite the experience recently. The Dukes’ distance medley team was one of two schools in Illinois invited to compete at the 2022 Oregon Relays at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. In addition to running in the DMR race, York’s six athletes were invited to run in individual races as well. “They had the time of their lives, raced their hearts out, and came home with season bests and personal bests,” York coach Amy Lichon said. York’s DMR team of junior Brooke Berger, junior Katelyn Pratt, sophomore Margaret Owens and sophomore Katherine Klimek took eighth.

Individually, sophomore Elaine Paul was 15th in the 200. Paul took 14th in the 400 and Pratt took 18th in the same race. Junior Bria Bennis was 29th in the 800. Berger was 11th in the 1-mile race, while Owens was 36th in the mile. Bennis took ninth in the 3,000, while Klimek was 14th in the 3,000.

York was third at the Downers Grove North Ritter invitational after taking 12th there in 2019.

Berger won the 3,200 and Klimek took third in that race. Paul, Frances Bronson, Erin Powers and Pratt

took first in the 800 relay. Winton, Owens, Allison Fitzgibbons and Bennis won the 3,200 relay, while Powers, Margaret Maston, Klimek and Berger took third in the 1,600 relay. Winton was eighth in the 800.

Leila Arzon was third in the high jump, while Maston was third in the pole vault.

At the Sue Pariseau invitational at Glenbard West, Winton took second in the 3,200. York also was sixth at the Tiger invitational at Wheaton-Warrenville South after taking 16th there in 2019. Berger was second in the 800.

Lichon noted Berger has already hit he state-qualifying standard in the 800 (2:15.43) and is ranked fourth in the state in that race. Bennis hit the state mark in the 3,200 indoors (10:52.48), while Winton has hit the state standard in the 1,600 (5:07.15) and in the 3,200 indoors (10:48.57) and outdoors (10.53.78).

Klimek hit the state standard in the 3,200 (11:06.55), while Paul hit the pole vault state standard indoors (10-4).

Other notables for York include the 1,600 relay team being ranked sixth in the state. That race features the combination of Berger, Paul, Pratt, Winton, Powers and Maston.

the state with contending runners Winton, Berger, Owens, Fitzgibbons, Bennis, Klimek and freshman Sofia Stoddard.

Junior Ava Glabus is in her first year as a track-and-field athlete and has the team’s best marks in long jump (16-10 3/4), high jump (4-11) and triple jump (32-1). “Ava is having an outstanding first year competing in track and field,” Lichon said.

Junior Charlotte Monroe is in her second year competing in track and field and has gone 16-4 in the long jump. Maston, a 10th grader, has gone 9-9 in the pole vault outdoors and Arzon, also a sophomore, has hit 4-11 in the high jump.

Indoors, York won home invites and took second in another it hosted. The Dukes were second in the West Suburban Conference indoor meet at Proviso West with 107 points. York was sixth in the meet in 2019. Berger, Powers, Winton, Lainey Paul, Arzon, Glabus, Bennis, Owens, Fitzgibbons, Klimek and Kalina Ceglinski earned all-conference honors. Notable finishes at the indoor conference included Winton winning the 3,200 with Bennis second in the race. Berger won the 1,600 and Klimek was second. Pratt won the 300, while the 1,600 relay team of Paul, Powers, Winton and Berger finished first.

York was fifth at the frosh-soph WSC invite. Norah Peiffle, Maggie Maston, Anna McGrail, Sophia Fidanza, Adell Weseloh, Lily Widmar and Maddie Valeski were all-conference. Widmar won the high jump title.

Lichon said one of York’s obvious strengths at the varsity level is with its talented distance group, “because this group is building on a great last season with all 2021 state qualifiers returning,” she said.

“This season, they are individually becoming competitive in a larger variety of events. We have more distance athletes than ever who are capable of running formidably in the 400, 800, 1600 and 3,200.”

Sprints and field events have also improved for the Dukes. “The sprints and jumps groups are also improving similarly because we have more athletes unafraid of hard work, with a willingness to try new events,” Lichon said. “Our meet lineups dramatically change week to week to allow the most girls opportunities to showcase and develop strength in a wider variety of events.

Lichon said keys to finishing the 2022 season strong are multifold. “We always focus on having a team that is happy, healthy and connecting meaningfully to one another through the sport of track and field,” she said. “It’s not enough for these athletes to set personal records each season. We also want them to create wonderful memories and high school experiences through our team. We will finish our season strong by continuing to support one another by working equally as hard at our group team goals as we do in our individual goals.”

“I believe our team is improving in sportsmanship, support of one another and finding the simple joy in what we get to do every day,” Lichon continued. “It is great when our team is complemented by other coaches on how we are developing technically, but I find the greatest fulfilment as a coach when it is pointed out that we have many athletes who are the first to congrat-

ulate their competition, and in general, are kind to the people around them. Character building, developing positive relationships, and having fun training and competing together all matter equally to us. We are already finding growing success focusing on these basics, and continuing to do so, we hope will bring us the success we are striving for.”

York heads to the West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet Friday at Downers Grove North.

The Dukes will then be part of the Class 3A Lake Park sectional on Thursday, May 12. The Class 3A state meet is in Charleston May 2021.

Additionally, Bennis and Klimek are recent recipients of the 2022 Elmhurst Exemplary Youth Service Award — Bennis for her hard work creating the No Frills Kids Run to benefit local families in the community, and Klimek for her dedicated membership on the Student Leadership Board for Key Club at York, Lichon explained.

Timothy Christian girls track team wins Walther Christian invite title Trojans boys track team produces numerous medalists

The Timothy Christian girls track team made the most out of its first major opportunity of the season. The Trojans won the Walther Christian invitational held at Triton College in River Grove. The Trojans won the 15-team meet with 134 points.

Chicago Mather was a distant second with 79 points. “It was our first time at a larger invite since 2019 because of COVID and the girls really wanted to come out strong,” Timothy coach Kevin Hackert said. Timothy won the 3,200 and 1,600 relays and took first in the 800 relay, but that team was disqualified due to a bad handoff. The Trojans’ 400 relay team took second.

Sophomore Jenny Lumkes won the triple jump, while senior Kennedi Clark won the 200. Hackert noted Timothy double-scored in the

400, low hurdles, high hurdles, high jump, 3,200 and discus. “It was a real team effort. We scored in all but two events, one being the disqualification,” Hackert noted. Hackert has been thrilled with his senior group this spring. “Our seniors are definitely the leaders of our team,” he said.

Hackert noted the 3,200 relay team, which took sixth in the state last year, has three returning members in Cailey Schuurmann, Lumkes and Kaitlyn Leonard. The 1,600 relay team, which also competed in the state meet last season, has all four runners back in Schuurmann, Lumkes, Clark and Leonard. “We have 13 seniors on the team, the largest class of seniors I have ever had,” Hackert said. “They provide a lot of leadership and direction.”

The girls love to support each other, and the team aspect of a relay really pushed them to be their best.”

Timothy is gearing up for the stretch run of the season after winning three smaller conference meets and the Walther event.

“Although we have already had a successful start to the year, we realize the competition only gets stronger moving forward,” Hackert said.

Assistance available to elderly, disabled voters for upcoming Primary Election The DuPage County Clerk Election Division has announced that special assistance in voter registration is available to the elderly and voters with disabilities through the division’s office.

The division can assist in the arrangement of voter registration appointments with deputy registrars for the upcoming June 28 General Primary Election.

All eligible registered voters, including those who are physically unable to get to their polling place,

are entitled to receive a ballot by mail or in person.

An individual may request a ballot to vote by mail up through June 23.
