Memorial Day was a beautiful sunny day with just enough breeze to cool things off and lift the flags to full salute.

Third grader names her teacher ‘Best’

The Independent surprised Ms. Manning and Julia on Wednesday, May 23 by arriving at the classroom to make the announcement and take their photo. Ms. Manning wins dinner for two at a restaurant in downtown Elmhurst.

The Elmhurst-based organization Conquer Myasthenia Gravis is embracing a Viking theme for its 6th Annual Strides Against MG Run/Walk.

The family-friendly event takes place on June 3 in Elmhurst’s Berens Park, 493 Oaklawn Avenue. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m., with welcome at 8:15 a.m. The 5K Fun Run begins at 8:30 a.m., and the walk is at 9 a.m.

cost is $35 per runner or walker ($40 day of the walk), $15 per child under age 13. Participants can enjoy the event’s family fun with live music, bubbles, hula hoops and raffle prizes.

MG affects approximately 20 per 100,000 people of any age, race, or gender. It is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that causes fluctuating muscle weakness. It can affect muscles that control eye movements, eyelids, chewing, swallowing, breathing, coughing and facial expression, as well as the arms and legs.

This is the “Strike Out Cancer” team, just one that took part in Relay for Life in 2017. As you can see, young people have fun forming a team and taking part in the annual event. This year is the 25th year for the Elmhurst Relay for Life, which steps off June 1.

In addition to recognizing the many survivors, Relay festivities will include live music, food and craft vendors as well as an inspirational message from Kati Potaczek, a sophomore journalism student at the University of Illinois and York High School graduate, who within the past year was diagnosed and treated for non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Cancer survivors in all stages of recovery and their caregivers in the Elmhurst area are invited.

More about the Mary K Steffens Foundation The Mary K Steffens Foundation was established to honor Mary, who was a devoted wife, mother, sister, friend, and selfless individual. Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer in

the year to cancer survivors who are registered with the Relay. Every spring the Committee delivers daffodils (the flower for cancer that symbolizes life and hope) to all registered survivors in Elmhurst.

The Foundation provides college scholarships to local high school seniors. Since its inception in 2009,

the MKS Foundation has awarded 23 scholarships totaling roughly $58,000.

City announces summer schedule for Explore Elmhurst Trolley Back for its fourth season, the Explore Elmhurst Express Trolley offers visitors and residents a free 30-minute ride around the City of Elmhurst. Making six stops across town, this fun and easy trip runs every Friday and Saturday, June 1 through September 15 from 12 noon to 12 midnight.

The Explore Elmhurst Express is equipped with GPS, which allows riders to track the trolley’s location by visiting ExploreElmhurst.com.

This experience is free and no tickets are required. Everyone is invited to take a ride around town.

It’s time to join survivors for a celebration of hope and life, as Elmhurst celebrates its 25th annual Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society (ACS).

This year’s celebration takes on even more meaning as Relay for Life will mark its 25th year in Elmhurst.

Survivors are invited to participate in the inspirational Survivor’s Lap that officially begins the annual Relay for Life. The Mary K Steffens Survivor/Caregiver Committee will host an anniversary- themed reception where cancer survivors and their caregivers can gather for a light meal and fellowship. Survivors will also receive a t-shirt, survivor pin and resources on staying healthy.

There will be also be free prize drawings for lucky winners.

“Mary was all about helping others,” said Norma Petersen, a close friend and co- chair of the MK Steffens Survivor/Caregiver Committee. “We are honored to continue her legacy of volunteerism and support for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers through Relay for Life.”

Harassment, threats

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Oct. 1, 2017-May 23 Police said a suspect has been sending a complainant Snapchat screenshots and text messages of a harassing nature between the above dates. The complainant does not want to sign complaints, but would like the communication to end.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement, criminal trespass to property, vandalism

May 20 Tristan Carter, 32, of Bellwood, was charged with criminal trespass to property at Elmhurst Hospital at around 6:41 p.m. Police said officers responded to the hospital for a report of a trespass violation. The reporting officer made contact with security, who had Carter in custody, according to police. Police said Carter was previously served with a no trespass order which he violated by entering the hospital on the above date.

May 19 A victim told police that while attending a wedding at a hotel in the 900 block of S. Riverside Drive at around 2:22 p.m., an unknown suspect(s) slashed the left front and left rear tires on his black Toyota Camry.

Disorderly conduct

May 23 Police said two parties in the 100 block of E. Oneida have had an ongoing neighbor dispute for years. A complainant told police the suspect attempted to run him over in the alley with his vehicle. The suspect told police the complainant was in the alley flying his drone while the suspect was attempting to park his vehicle in his garage. The complainant reportedly took his time moving out of the suspect’s way, and then yelled, “He just tried to hit me with his car.” The stories were deemed to be conflicting, and there was a lack of evidence that any crime had occurred.

May 18 Disorderly conduct was reported at a manicure business in the 200 block of N. York at around 9 p.m. Police said an officer responded for a customer dispute. The complainant told police that an unsatisfied subject refused to leave, after she was offered her money back for the work done on her nails. The subject received her money, and was issued a no trespass notice.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, dispute, disturbance

May 21 Police said that subsequent to a report of a domestic at an undisclosed location at around 6:30 p.m., a juvenile suspect reportedly battered the victim inside their home. The suspect was later released to his mother pending a juvenile petition for domestic battery.

A victim in the 100 block of E. Grand told police at around 6:34 p.m. that suspects were soliciting her apartment complex and came to her asking to see her ComEd bill. The victim told the suspects to leave the building at which point they reportedly became loud and started screaming and cursing at her in the hallway of the building. The victim went back into her apartment, and the suspects were still screaming in the hallway, according to police. The suspects were located and served no-trespass notices for the building.

May 20 A 25-year-old Chicago man was charged with domestic battery and criminal damage to

CALL 800-222-TIPS a vehicle near Butterfield and Bryan at around 10:07 p.m. A victim told police that she and the suspect were involved in an argument which turned physical. She related the suspect hit her in the mouth, and then kicked her car door, causing a large dent.

May 19 A victim in the 900 block of N. Virginia Lane told police at around 1:06 a.m. that she was involved in an argument with her boyfriend and he subsequently shoved her, causing her to fall to the ground. The suspect related he and the victim were involved in a verbal argument and nothing physical occurred. There were no complaints signed.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor

May 22 Ahmad M. Hamdan, 19, of Chicago, was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor zero tolerance, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and improper lane usage near North and I-290 at around 12:10 a.m. A juvenile in the vehicle was issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor and a curfew violation. A second person in the vehicle was found to be a missing juvenile and was turned over to the Addison Police Department at the scene.

May 21 Jose F. Martinez-Berrum, 47, of Addison, was charged with DUI, transportation of open alcohol, improper lane usage, disobeying a traffic control device and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 11:31 p.m.

May 20 Ismael F. Barinas, 55, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of open alcohol, failure to yield to an authorized emergency vehicle and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at around 11:32 p.m.

May 18 Brenda Rivera, 28, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage near North and Route 83 at around 1:39 a.m.

Then, at around 3:40 a.m., police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Myrtle, it was determined Rivera—who was arrested for DUI around two hours earlier—had borrowed a car since her vehicle was towed after her initial arrest. Rivera was determined to still be under the influence of alcohol, according to police. She was additionally charged under state charges of DUI, violation of bail bond, improper lane usage and speeding.

May 17 Jason Papadopoulos, 30, of St. Peters, Mo., was charged with DUI and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident in the 500 block of Route 83 at around 9:19 p.m.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

May 21 Jacob T. Bulthuis, 20, of LaSalle, Ill., and Cruz C. Garcia, 20, of Forest View, were both issued citations for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 1:57 a.m.

May 17 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near I-88 and Highland at around 2:50 p.m., Kevin Beauregard, 28, of Villa Park, and Michael Kmiec, 32, of Lombard, were found to be in possession of a controlled substance.

Both were charged with with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, while Beauregard was additionally charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to signal.

Police said reporting officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near I-88 and Highland at around 1:14 a.m. Fourteen bags of suspected heroin were recovered, according to police.

A passenger in the vehicle, McCree Davis, 27, of Geneva, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of hypodermic needles and possession of drug paraphernalia. The driver of the vehicle was issue a citation for speeding.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near I-290 and Route 83 at around 1:32 p.m., Sarah Jensen, 27, and Julie Rodgers, 39, both of Palatine, were found to be in possession of heroin. Both were charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, while Jensen was additionally charged with no seat belt.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Roosevelt at around 2:15 p.m., Andrew Santilli, 35, of Lombard, was found to be in possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia. He was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, speeding and no insurance.

Police said that subsequent to observing a hand-to-hand transaction near Roosevelt and Main Street in Lombard at around 3:04 p.m., a traffic stop was conducted, and Joseph Sakwa, 60, of Wheaton, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to be in possession of heroin He was charged with possession of a controlled substance .The driver of the vehicle was cited for speeding and no insurance.

Street racing May 17 Police said officers responded to Romans Road at around 11:32 p.m. for a report of street racing. Jonathan Blancas, 20, of Stickney; Andrew Garcia, 24, of North Riverside; Ivan Mendez, 23, of Worth; and Alejandro Pena, 19, of Chicago, were each issued citations for street racing.

Suspicious circumstances

May 23 An officer responded to a school in the 100 block of Victory Parkway at around 3:09 p.m. and spoke to a victim, who stated that while walking near the gymnasium door, she observed a black minivan parked in the pickup lane. The driver, described as an Hispanic

male between 35 and 40 years old with short dark hair, a moustache and chubby, stated, “Do you need a ride?” as the victim passed the van. The suspect began to exit the vehicle, and the victim ran toward her sister. The victim was released to her 23-year-old sister, and the officer talked to the victim’s father.

May 17 A complainant in the 800 block of Wilson turned in a stun gun that was found in the field behind a school at around 10:10 a.m. The stun gun was placed into evidence.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

May 22 Police said an officer at a store in the 400 block of N. York observed suspects inside a vehicle smoking cannabis. All of the suspects were found to be in possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia, according to police. Police said one of the suspects had been consuming alcohol in the vehicle, and four containers of stolen baby formula were located. That suspect was charged with theft and illegal consumption of alcohol. A second suspect also was charged with theft. Abel Rodriguez, 26, of Des Plaines, was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and illegal liquor access.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 10:52 a.m. A complainant told police that a suspect described as a black male in his 40s, 5’11”, wearing a blue baseball hat, a tan jacket, tan pants and having a beard that had some gray in it, walked out of the liquor department and exited the store with bulges in his pants. The complainant told police he could hear clanking bottles as the suspect walked out. It is unknown which type of liquor was taken.

May 21-May 22 Forgery was reported at a company in the 500 block of W. Lake between the above dates. A complainant told police that her company had four fraudulent checks cashed using their account number and routing number. The checks were cashed at an unknown location by an unknown suspect. The checks totaled $2,840.

May 21 Forgery was reported at a store in the 100 block of N. Palmer at around 5:11 p.m. Police said officers were informed that a female suspect was trying to obtain prescription medication using fraudulent forms. The reporting officer located the suspect and placed her under arrest. A search of the suspect’s vehicle yielded a note book containing numerous pharmacy locations and stating the status of each transaction. An arrest warrant will be obtained for the suspect on a charge of forgery.

Theft was reported in the 700 block of S. Hawthorne at around 7:25 p.m. A victim told police he wire transferred $5,342.75 to a USAA bank account for a house closing. The email and instructions for the wire transfer were found to be fictitious. The victim reported the incident to his bank.

May 20-May 21 Theft was reported at a company in the 900 block of S. Riverside Drive between the above dates. A victim told police that an unknown suspect removed a glass carrying rack from the rear of the business. The rack is 6 feet wide by 8 feet high.

May 20 Forgery was reported in the 200 block of E. Butterfield at around 12:08 p.m. A report-

At the ECO Car Show held in the lot next to the Elmhurst Library on Thursday, May 17, this man shows visitors a “Habitent” – a tent that turns your hatchback vehicle into a temporary camping/living space. It was just one of about 20 vehicles on display that are easier on the environment.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a meeting on May 22 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. Commissioner Shannon Ebner was absent from the meeting.

From January to March, the 17-member Churchville team began the competition by taking part in a series of weekly challenges. The team completed all of the challenges without error.

Drawing Illinois closer to the enactment of the life-saving Annie LeGere Law, the Illinois House of Representatives passed an amendment sponsored by State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) that would encourage medical professionals’ participation in the initiative to equip police officers with epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPens) for allergy-related emergencies.

“The Annie LeGere Law is a true community-led effort, and one that has drawn a great deal of interest from law enforcement and health professionals as a vital new public safety measure,” said Nybo. “The Elmhurst Police Department has already budgeted for EpiPens and extensive device training—but health providers need more reassurance before issuing the prescriptions and signing off on the training programs.

Additionally, the Jefferson Elementary School PTA has offered to donate up to $9,500 to purchase items that will support Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities. The board also voted to accept a $3,000 donation from the Sandburg Middle School PTA. The donation will be used to purchase furniture for that school’s library.

Sponsorship approved for Fine Arts Week, York Album Project The board also voted to approve a five-year sponsorship from Mr. and Mrs. John and Anne Buckley in the amount of $1,000 per year, for a total of $5,000. I would like to emphasize that the allegations against Mr. Nunez are in no way indicative of the outstanding work done by Probation Department

York student punched in face following Snapchat arguments On May 23, a victim at York High School told police at around 3:32 p.m. that she was walking up the staircase to her class at approximately 7:30 a.m. when she was punched on the right side of her face from behind. She was then reportedly struck two to three more times. An unknown person(s) pulled the suspect off of the victim and the suspect left the area. The victim stated that the suspect wants to date her boyfriend and they have both been going back and forth on Snapchat, engaging in arguments. The school detective

Former boyfriend damages car, windows with baseball bat On May 21, Daniel Rohde, 27, of Forest Park, was charged with criminal damage to property and served a no-trespass notice in the 500 block of N. Emory at around 10:06 a.m. Police said Rohde is a former boyfriend of the victim’s daughter and refused to leave the victim’s property.

According to police, Rohde then retrieved a baseball bat from his car and proceeded to use the bat to break out the windows and damage the body of the victim’s vehicle.

Female York student found with stun gun in backpack On May 21, police said the dean of students at York High School reported that a subject was found to have a fully functioning electric stun gun in her backpack at the school at around 12:30 p.m. The subject told school officials her mother bought the stun gun to use as personal protection. The subject was cited for unlawful use of a weapon; then released to school officials.

The subject’s parent was notified of the incident.

York students earn top awards at State Science Olympiad On Saturday, April 20, the York Science Olympiad team competed at the State competition, held at the University of Illinois. York’s team competed in the A division, ranking 8th overall.

This year, the 34th Annual Science Olympiad National Tournament was hosted on May 18-19 by Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, Colorado.

UCCA hosts ‘Taste of the Town: Food for Life’

United Community Concerns Association (UCCA) hosted its 2nd annual Taste of the Town: Food for Life, an Elmhurst food and drink sampling event.

It took place on Thursday, May 17 at Wilder Mansion, where more than 17 Elmhurst businesses provided tastings of food, wine, and beer, along with cooking demonstrations by local chefs. Live music provided by the Clay Corso Trio.

Proceeds will benefit UCCA, an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization that has provided food to Elmhurst School District 205’s children and families in need. Last year, UCCA provided more than $76,000 in food to almost 300 families and 85 seniors as we worked to strengthen our community by ending hunger.

AAUW honors its scholarship winners The Elmhurst Area Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) recently announced the recipients of its 2018 annual scholarships. Proceeds from the sales from the annual Used Book Sale are used to fund these scholarships.

The success of the 2017 Used Book Sale provided funds for two $3,000 Returning Student Scholarships and one $1,000 Dare to Dream Scholarship.

Suzanne Oddo and Robyn-Leigh Zaras were chosen as this year’s recipients.

More about Suzanne Oddo Suzanne Oddo was born and raised in Elmhurst. Her grandmother and mother were both nurses at Elmhurst Hospital and she decided to follow in their footsteps.

Suzanne earned a B.A. in Nursing from Lewis University and has 12 years of comprehensive nursing experience. She has been working in Labor & Delivery for the last 7 years and loves her job but felt a desire to acquire tools that would help her assist and lead others in her profession. She is enrolled in the Master of Science in Nursing program at Olivet Nazarene University with the expectation of receiving her degree in March 2020. Suzanne has 2 daughters and hopes that she is providing a good example to them by pursuing her own dreams.

More about Robyn-Leigh Zaras Robyn-Leigh Zaras was born in Cape Town, South Africa and moved to the United States at the age of 4.

She received her B.A. in Management from Benedictine University and has been an administrative professional for the past 15 years with an academic and career background in accounting. Robyn realized that

she needed to further her education to be promoted. She also realized that she loved auditing! Robyn-Leigh is presently enrolled in the Master of Science in Accounting program at Benedictine University with graduation expected in March 2019. Robyn hopes that by furthering her education, she is being a good role model for her three children.

In a continuing effort to raise funds and awareness for the fight against childhood cancer, there will be an “Alex’s Lemonade Stand” event at the Immaculate Conception parking lot, 132 Arthur Street at York St., on Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The effort is part of the 2018 Lemonade Days All Star stand for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF).

The Lemonade Stand at IC was spearheaded by the Ciamarra family, whose daughter Anna was a kindergartener at ICGS when she was diagnosed with High Risk T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Now in remission, Anna is back for her second year of school and has a goal to raise $10,000.

“When we started our cancer journey as a family nearly three years ago, we hadn’t planned on what the outcome might be, nor how we could get involved as a family to make a difference in the battle against childhood cancer,” said Anna’s mother, Ruth Ciamarra. “When Anna was only six years old and in the midst of the toughest part of her cancer treatment, she decided she wanted to host a lemonade stand in support of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Even after spending the previous night in the ER, she hosted her stand and we raised over $2,000!”

A day in the life of a developer…

Catching up with Charles Walsh Jr.

When the Independent published a story about Livia, the new restaurant in town, it was learned Elmhurst’s own Charles Walsh Jr. was one of the business’s silent partners. It seemed like a good reason to catch up with Walsh and see what development endeavors he has been involved with of late.

“I am a silent partner [at Livia],” Walsh told the Independent in an exclusive interview. “I have nothing to do with day-to-day operations, however, as a team player and as someone who wants to be involved with a successful operation, I wanted to contribute. I took it on to assist with the marketing, make sales calls to generate interest in catering and the private dining room. While I’m involved minimally, ‘help’ is the key word – I worked to help us all be

successful.”

He said one of his partners, Brian, often uses the word “culture.”

“I think what he means is creating an experience that draws you to return more and more, again and again,” he said. “The experience draws you back on multiple occasions. You can see people coming in to see what’s going on. That’s where we want to be.”

From a real estate point of view, Walsh shared his feelings about downtown Elmhurst and all the current development in that area.

“I like to see new things and that doesn’t mean that we should knock everything down,” he said. “It’s nice to see people fixing up their buildings and building new ones, it’s a great benefit for everybody. I wish I could be involved in all of those projects.”

Walsh talked about his background, having grown up in Elm-

hurst, attending grade school and high school here, he even went to Elmhurst College.

“I’m absolutely ridiculously passionate about Elmhurst,” he said.

“New development, new construction is a good thing, for all those who have a vested interest in downtown as well as the whole community.”

Venturing into Addison Eight years ago, Walsh was busy with a development on the northwest corner of Lake & Mill Rd. in Addison.

“We built a Chase Bank branch, and next to it, a 4000 square-foot retail building,” he said. “As with Elmhurst, I developed an excellent relationship with the Village, the staff and the Mayor’s office. Baseball team wins second sectional title in a row

The Timothy Christian baseball team seized momentum as early as possible.

And it helped the Trojans in a big way.

Timothy Christian charged out to an immediate 3-0 lead in the first inning en route to a 5-1 win over Lisle in the championship game of the Class 2A IC Catholic Prep sectional at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

The win gave the Trojans their second sectional title in a row. Timothy played Herscher earlier this week at

Benedictine University in Lisle for a shot at playing in the Class 2A state semifinals this weekend in Joliet.

“We were the visiting team and the first four at-bats we had a single, double, triple and a sacrifice fly,” Trojans coach Jim Snoeyink noted.

Harrison Stanton led off the game with a single, Trent Marrera then hit a ground-rule double that was followed by Jimmy Allen’s two-run triple. Nick Huisman’s deep sacrifice fly scored Allen and just like that Timothy led 3-0 before Huisman ever took the mound.

“Three runs in after four batters is a pretty good start,” said Snoeyink.

Huisman ended up going six innings to pick up the win. He allowed only one run. “That run scored on either a passed ball or a wild pitch,” the coach said. “He threw six great innings in the heat. Nick’s pitching was huge. He’d be the first to admit he struggled some this year. He was really tough in tough conditions with the heat.”

Allen pitched the seventh inning to seal it and send Timothy to the supersectional round (top 8 teams in Class 2A) for the second year in a row.

“I imagine our guys were all a little nervous,” said Snoeyink. “But by jumping out to a 3-0 lead like that I

think that settled everybody down.

It gives the pitcher some confidence when he can go out there knowing he has a 3 run lead. It was a good day.”

Snoeyink was pleased the bats were alive once again for his team.

“Our hitting had been a little inconsistent during the season,” he said.

“In the tournament, we’ve hit the ball when we needed to and scored quite a few runs. That’s key and our pitching has been decent and our defense has been very good. We have everything going at the right time.”

And Snoeyink has seen offensive production from a large cast of characters. “The hitting has been by a

number of different players,” he said.

“The game before (sectional semifinals), the top three guys in the lineup didn’t get on, but others did. It’s been throughout the lineup, which has been good. That first game of the sectional we only had seven hits coming from three different guys. Nick Huisman had three, Thomas Becvar had two and Connor Gwaltney had two. Different guys are stepping up.

In this game, the first three hitters get hits and yet none of them had any in the (sectional semifinal).”

The York girls lacrosse team concluded its 2018 season by splitting a pair of postseason games.

The Dukes were 18-0 winners against Nazareth Academy in a sectional quarterfinal game hosted at York.

York then dropped an 11-6 decision to conference foe Lyons Township in the sectional semifinals in Western Springs.

York finished the season with a 12-7 overall record.

“Overall, I think we have been playing great,” said York coach Ryan Walz prior to his team playing Lyons Township in the semifinals. “We seem to get better every game. The flow and consistency is better each game. Our transitions, playmaking and fast breaks have been the highlights. We emphasize making quick plays in practice.

Our drills focus on moving the ball quick and not giving our opposition time to set up and defend.”

The York baseball team concluded its 2018 season with a pair of Class 4A regional games.

The Dukes were the No. 2 seed in the Class 4A Bartlett sectional.

The York squad started the Class 4A Elk Grove regional with a 2-0 win against No. 15 seed Streamwood.

York had six hits in the game and scored single runs in the second and fifth innings.

In the second after a fly out to start the inning, Dan Brown singled and Joey Chiappetta grounded out, which advanced Brown to second base. Joe Goehl then doubled to right field, scoring Brown.

In the fifth, Elliott Achepohl walked and Clayton Letourneau sacrificed courtesy runner Zane Heemsoth to second. After a popup for the second out, Ryan Ross hit a line drive single to left that scored Heemsoth.

Ross went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Goehl was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Andrew Deardurff and Brown had the other hits. Ross also stole a base.

Charlie Pakenas was the winning pitcher. He threw a two-hit complete-game shutout, striking out six and walking one. He needed only 67 pitches to earn the victory. Fifty of his 67 pitches went for strikes and he threw first-pitch strikes to 17 of the 23 batters he faced. Pakenas faced only two batters over the minimum (one reaching via error and one via walk).

York then advanced to the Elk Grove regional final against No. 7 Glenbard East where it lost 4-3.

York led 1-0 until Glenbard East scored a run in the top of the fifth and another in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. York put up two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead, but Glenbard East scored two in the top of the seventh and held off the Dukes in the bottom of the seventh.

York had six hits and Glenbard East had eight hits. Ian Steinorth went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Letourneau had two walks and a run scored. Mike Pastuovic went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Deardruff went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Brown had a hit.

Letourneau had two stolen bases, while Steinorth had one steal.

Kellen Gilmartin took the loss in relief of starting pitcher Jake Hadawi who went the first 4 1/3 innings and allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out two.

York finished the season with a 21-12 mark.

Timothy Christian’s Xavier Ross finished third in the state in the 400 run at the recent Class 1A boys track and field state finals held at Eastern Illinois University.

Ross finished third with a time of 49.41. He made the finals after winning the fourth preliminary heat with a time of 49.75.

Ross also took third in the second preliminary heat of the 100 dash with a time of 11.25 and did not qualify for finals.

Timothy sophomore Caleb Marshall took 27th in the state in the 3,200 run with a time of 10:27.22.

The IC Catholic Prep softball team added another layer to its model of consistent success in recent years.

The Knights were 12-1 winners over Lisle to win the Class 2A Lisle sectional title.

IC Catholic Prep (26-5) played defending Class 2A state-champion Beecher earlier this week in the Class 2A Seneca supersectional with the winner advancing to this weekend’s state finals in East Peoria.

The win gave the Knights their third sectional title in four years under coach Frank Reaber. Prior to Reaber taking over the program, the Knights had won only one sectional title.

“We’re still hitting the ball,” said Reaber. “It took a couple innings to get used to the girl they had pitching and then we scored three runs in the third, seven in the fourth and two in the fifth.”

The Knights pounded out 14 hits in the sectional final. Alessandra Eccardt, Natalie Murillo and Rebecca Cash each had a double, while Dani Murillo tripled. Cash was the winning pitcher and moved her record to 13-1.

Kayla Faber-Cournane, coming back from injury, pitched the fifth and final inning.

“Dani Murillo is hitting the heck out of the ball,” said Reaber. “Natalie had a double against Lisle and Rebecca Cash pitched well and she also had a double.

Kayla pitched the last inning.

She’s slowly coming back from her injury.”

IC Catholic Prep reached the sectional title game after blanking Westmont 14-0 in five innings in the semifinals at Lisle.

The Knights led 3-0 after the first inning and 5-0 after two before exploding for nine runs in the third to put the game out of reach.

The Knights had 14 hits.

Natalie Murillo and Cash each had doubles. Dani Murillo tripled, while Josie Lytton and Dani Murillo each hit a home run in the game.

Reaber said his team was looking forward to matching up with Beecher earlier this week.

“Beecher is a really good team,” said Reaber. “If we play our game we can win. Whoever gets hot, that will be it.”

Reaber’s team has been plenty hot in its four postseason wins thus far. IC Catholic Prep outscored its four postseason opponents by a combined 56-3. The Knights won their two regional games by identical scores of 15-1 and then had 14-0 and 12-1 wins in the sectional games.

In those four games, the Knights outhit their opponents 64-14.

The York softball team had little difficulty in securing its most recent regional title this past week.

The Dukes defeated Chicago Von Steuben and Chicago Taft by identical 10-0 scores to win the Class 4A Maine West regional title in Des Plaines.

York, the No. 1 seed in the Niles West sectional, played No. 5 seed Chicago Whitney Young Tuesday and if the Dukes won that game they will play for the sectional title on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Skokie against either No. 2 Oak Park-River Forest or No. 6 Maine South.

It was York’s sixth regional title in the last seven years and seventh since 2010. York’s last sectional title came in 2013, the year it finished fourth in the state.

In a 10-0 win over Von Steuben, the No. 16 seed in the sectional, York had six hits and scored four runs in the second, five in the fifth and one in the sixth to invoke the 10-run rule.

York then won 10-0 against Taft in five innings. The Dukes pounded out 12 hits in the regional title game and scored three runs in the third, six in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Karnatz went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Moran went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Collins went 1-for-2 with three RBI. Kyra Kroll went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Cate Duhig was leading the way with 45 goals out of her middie position. She also had 62 ground balls. Eileen O’Donnell, who plays attack, had 30 goals, while Emily Siegenthaler, who also plays attack, had 29 goals. Ellie Grubbs, yet another attack player, had 24 goals to go with a state-best 60 assists. Those 60 assists ranked 11th in the country as well. Middies Emily Fleckenstein and Ellie Bernard each had 23 goals.

Isabel Torres earned all-state firstteam honors. Torres is the only goalie in the state to earn first-team accolades. Grubbs earned all-state honorable mention.

All-WSC players include first-teamers Torres, Duhig, who only is a sophomore, Grubbs and Siegenthaler, both seniors.

Seniors Kerry O’Malley (defender) and Liza Krause (defender) were both all-WSC second-team picks, while May Mann, another senior defender, was an all-WSC at-large pick.

The York girls 3,200 relay team shows off their ninth-place medals at the recent Class 3A meet held at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium in Charleston. The finish earned the team of junior Sarah May, senior Katherine Tomaska and sophomores Emma Kern and Lydia Hickey allstate honors. The time also was York’s fastest in the event since 2010.

York senior Charlie Kern Jr. ended his high-school running career on a high note few get to experience.

Kern Jr. finished second in the state in the 800 run at the recent Class 3A boys track and field state finals held at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Kern Jr. took second with a time of 1:52.64. Eisenhower’s Joshua English won the state title with a time of 1:51.94.

Kern Jr. qualified for the finals by winning Heat 3 in the preliminaries with a time of 1:55.14.

That wasn’t the only good news for York’s track team. The 3,200 relay took sixth in the state with a time of 7:52.83. That team included sophomore Daniel Klysh, senior Mark Morgan, junior Jackson Bode and senior Sean MacGregor. That group was third in its heat in the preliminaries with a time of 7:48.83.

York’s 400 relay team ran 42.66 in the first heat in preliminaries and took fifth. That team included senior

Brendan Chaltin, senior Deandre Klein, sophomore Jimmy Hoffman and senior Jonathan Tanner. They did not qualify for the finals.

The same four took seventh in the second preliminary heat of the 800 relay with a time of 1:31.71.

York’s Dominic Pastorelle finished 13th in the first flight of the long jump preliminaries with a mark of 18-3 3/4. He did not advance to finals.

Brendan Hill was 12th in the first preliminary flight of the pole vault with a leap of 13-6.

ings that were an eyesore and turned them into a beautiful re-use of the property.

“Redevelopment is definitely a good thing and that’s what I did in Addison.

There’s always a benefit to redevelopment.”

In Addison, Walsh built the property where the Chase Bank is now located.

“That Chase [location] is the #1 Chase Bank in its region, based on traffic and transaction volume,” he said. “One of the other tenants in the location, T-Mobile, is actually a training location and it has also been #1 in the country for sales volume at one time for the company.”

In addition to the T-Mobile, having had a vacancy in that property for five years, Walsh had a friend urging him to open a video-gaming café.

“I thought applying for a gaming license would be tougher than a liquor license,” he said, “but once you get the liquor license, then the gaming is ‘easy.’ With my friend, who owned another video gaming location, encouraging me to do it, I thought, I have a five-year vacancy, so why not try it?

“Now, we’ve been open coming up on two years and we are the #2 location in Addison in volume, which I’m very proud of.

“But I’m not #1.”

The Village of Addison staff and the mayor were great to work with, not only for a real estate developer, but also for a business owner, according to Walsh.

Addison grows to two locations With things going so well in Addison, it was no surprise that after about a year, Walsh’s partner suggested they open a second location.

“When my partner suggested we get another liquor license for a second location, we went through the process and, because Addison is great to work with, we now have two locations known as Lacey’s Place, one at 610 W. Lake, another at 1590 W. Lake,” he said.

All in the family “I guess it helps if you’re an honest and trustworthy businessman with a good reputation,” he said. “Though my dad’s earlier involvement in Elmhurst certainly helps.”

Walsh offers a reminder that he and his father, Chuck, rebuilt Elmhurst City Hall in 1992. He added that he’s been talking with his daughter about her career plans.

“I’ve encouraged Gabrielle to follow in my footsteps, because, as I told her, you create your own destiny.”

More about the job of a business owner/developer The favorite part of his job?

“I absolutely love what I do,” he said. “It’s the old cliché, if you don’t love what you do, you’re not going to be happy. Nothing [I do] feels like work. I’m a business owner, I’m not a 9 to 5 guy. Sometimes I go in seven days a week, a few hours on the

weekend, just to keep things moving forward. I stay involved.”

For better or worse, in good times and bad Asked about the favorite part of his job, he is quick to reply as other successful people have.

“No two days are the same – I’m not stuck behind a desk eight hours at a time, kick the dirt, enjoy a beautiful day, interacting with people, shoveling snow, working with tenants, contracts or city officials,” he said. “I love it all.”

What about the difficulties in his job?

“Not every property is a home run.

I have one property that has been a challenge because I bought it at the beginning of the great recession,” he said.

“So that’s still hanging. Not everything is guaranteed.

“You’ve got to do your due diligence, but even when you do all your homework, you can still run into a problem or a challenge based on circumstances beyond your control.”

His plans for the immediate future?

“I’m always working on something here in town and I have also partnered with another real estate developer, who is presently working on a development proposal in Maywood. We’re about to break ground on a project in Streator, Illinois, as well.

“I hope to be redeveloping a property here in town,” he said. “It’s been 20 years since I built something in Elmhurst, so it’s time, and I am ready.”
