North Avenue construction to continue through summer Emroy bridge to close for 45 days beginning June 3

By Dee Longfellow FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT

At a meeting on Monday, May 20, City Manager James Grabowski provided a road construction update to the Elmhurst City Council beginning with a project that he said would close not only a road but also the Emroy bridge that crosses over the I-290 Eisenhower Expressway. “It is a state project but the contractor contacted us and wanted to close [the area] next week,” Grabowski said. “However, we were able to work with the contractor because of the close of school to extend that out a week. It will close on June 3 for 45 days while they reconstruct that area. We are in the process of getting the word out, in addition to what the state and the contractor are doing.” Third Ward Alderman Dannee Polomsky asked what exactly would be done to get the word out to the residents in the project area. “Will they be getting a letter?” she asked. “Is it just the homes on Emroy, or all the homes around the detour?” “We’re working with the contractor to see what their obligation is from IDOT,” Grabowski said. “We don’t want to duplicate their efforts and we don’t want to give any conflicting information, so we’re waiting to see what they will be doing and we’ll pick up the rest. We can walk the neighborhood with fliers if we have to, we’ve done that before.” North Avenue construction begins Second Ward Alderman Bob Dunn asked about North Avenue reconstruction, having seen a notification

that it was to start May 20. “North Avenue repaving is going to happen this summer as well,” Grabowski said. “The Public Works & Buildings Committee talked a great deal about this and when IDOT was preparing to bid the project, they ultimately gave the contractor the op-

portunity to work night or day and the contractor chose to work during the day only. “They will have a moving road closure down North Avenue, as they repair curbs and patches and then pave North Avenue. The project will go from Villa Avenue all the way to

I-290, so it’s a long stretch, clearly the road is in need of the work, so that is starting up as well.” A few days later, Grabowski’s office issued the following release: “The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has notified the City of Elmhurst that roadway-resurfac-

ing improvements are scheduled to begin on Monday, May 20 on North Avenue from Villa Avenue to I-290. These roadway improvements consist of spot curb and gutter replacement, ADA sidewalk improvements at the intersections, and pavement grinding and resurfacing.”
