Deceased person found in Eldridge Park lagoon

Elmhurst resident had been living with his brother in Arlington Heights due to health concerns

According to a release issued by Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth, on Tuesday, May 18 at approximately 7:50 a.m., the Elmhurst police responded to Eldridge Park for a report of a deceased individual in the lagoon.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with an Elmhurst Park District employee who related that, while mowing grass in the park, several employees observed what appeared to be an individual in the water.

Elmhurst Park District staff then contacted 911 for police and fire services. The deceased individual was recovered from the water by Elmhurst Fire Department personnel. Elmhurst Police evidence technicians and inves-

tigators as well as the DuPage County Coroner’s Office assisted at the scene.

According to Ruth, the victim was 78-year-old John P. Ruane, who resided in Elmhurst. Because he suffered from numerous medical conditions, Ruane had been recently staying at his brother’s home in Arlington Heights.

On the morning of May 18, John’s brother discovered that his vehicle as well as John were missing. John’s brother contacted the Arlington Heights Police Department to report John missing.

At this time, the cause and manner of death have yet to be determined and this case remains under investigation.

Memorial Day convoy leads off from Wilder Park on Monday The City of Elmhurst is hosting a community-wide “Always Remember” convoy on Monday, May 31 stepping off from the Veterans Memorial in Wilder Park at 9:30 a.m.

Over the course of two warm and sunny days, Elmhurst University graduates of the Class of 2021 and Class of 2020 took part in a series of on-campus, in-person Commencement ceremonies, walking across the stage and into history.

Held under an enormous white tent spanning the length of the University Mall, the 150th Commencement exercises were unprecedented for a number of reasons.

The ceremonies honored the Class of 2020, the final class to graduate from Elmhurst when it still was called Elmhurst College; as well as the Class of 2021, the first to graduate from Elmhurst University. They also marked the official beginning of the University’s sesquicentennial celebrations, a yearlong commemoration of Elmhurst’s 150 years as an educational institution.

And the COVID-19 pandemic, which prevented in-person ceremonies last year, was weakened enough by vaccines and strict safety measures to finally allow a carefully planned Commencement that could keep participants safe.

During each of four separate ceremonies, the graduates sat socially distanced, in face masks, while a

limited number of their guests filled the rows behind them. As each grad walked across the stage, they signaled to a fully vaccinated President Troy D. VanAken how they wanted to receive their diploma—masks on or off, with or without a congratulatory elbow bump.

“Welcome to your richly-deserved Commencement Day!” President VanAken said. “Thanks in large part to your hard work, dedication and resilience, we are able to come together today. We have been through so much together, especially in the past year. Always remember—you are a historic group in a historic time.”

More than 900 students took part in the weekend ceremonies, out of nearly 2,000 Elmhurst students who earned degrees in the past two academic years.

At the ceremony for graduate students, held on Friday, May 21, master’s degrees were awarded in the fields of business, education, health care and technology.

“Remember that Elmhurst has prepared you well and will always be here for you, as it has been for me and the tens of thousands of alumni who came before you,” he said.

VanAken wishes students well As President VanAken congratulated the graduates, he urged them to maintain their connections to the University, and to come back for one of the sesquicentennial celebration events.

“We can’t wait to see what you’ll do next,” he said. “A hearty congratulations to you, the Elmhurst University Class of 2021 and Class of 2020!”

The suspect related the complainant pushed and struck her. Due to conflicting accounts of the incident and no independent witness, no arrests were made.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance May 18 Konrad R Kruk, 39 of Hoffman Estates, was charged with aggravated DUI, aggravated driving while license revoked, DUI, no insurance, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident subsequent to a traffic crash near Grand and County Line at 7:12 p.m. Police said Kruk also was found to have a warrant from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

A 47-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 900 block of S. Hillcrest at 9:23 p.m. A victim told police the suspect, whom police said was intoxicated, threw a candle at the victim.

May 17 Andrei Smahon, 38, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for disorderly conduct and damage to property, while Stephen E. Barba, 44, of Bensenville, was cited for disorderly conduct near York and Wrightwood at 8:20 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic altercation, Barba yelled at and approached Smahon in an aggressive manner, while holding a caulking gun. Smahon attempted to close Barba’s car door on him, thus causing a dent in the car door, according to police.

May 14 A complainant and the suspect in the 300 block of N. Oaklawn told police at 7:18 p.m. that they were involved in a verbal argument which turned physical. No arrests were made due to conflicting statements and no injuries reported.

May 13 Police said officers responded to a report of a domestic battery at 8:31 a.m. A reporting officer met with the victim who reported she was battered by a juvenile suspect. The juvenile fled the area on foot but was later located and transported to the police station. He was charged with domestic battery and was released to his family pending juvenile petition.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, illegal possession of alcohol May 18 Anton C. Champ, 32, of Chicago, was charged with driving while license suspended, unlawful possession of cannabis by driver, transportation of open alcohol and improper

Paul J. Supena, 57, of Elmhurst, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol/ drugs combination subsequent to a traffic stop near Prospect and Winthrop at 5:17 p.m.

Mey M. Tran, 27, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and endangering

the life of a child subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Riverside at 10:53 p.m.

May 15 Michael Bink, 26, of Lagrange Park, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Butterfield at 2:50 a.m.

Mitchell Holmes, 20, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI and disobeying a stop sign subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Butterfield at 3:09 a.m.

May 13 Police said that subsequent to a business check in the 100 block of N. Addison at 11:26 p.m, Diana Krzalic, 19, of Norridge, and Gabrielle Ketola, 19, of Ann Arbor, Mich., were found to have consumed alcoholic beverages while under the age of 21. Krzalic was issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor, possession of tobacco by a minor, and minor on licensed premise. Ketola was issued citations for minor on licensed premise and consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Brian Labuda, 40, of Roselle, was charged with DUI, possession of a controlled substance, improper lane usage and expired driver’s license subsequent to a traffic stop near North and I-290 at 12:24 a.m.

Fleeing, eluding May 14-May 16 Police said that between the above dates, there were five incidents of drivers allegedly fleeing and eluding police officers after officers attempted to conduct traffic stops.

Harassment, threats May 17 A complainant in the 900 block of Hillside told police at 9:40 a.m. that she advised the suspect she no longer wanted to have contact with him. On the above date, the suspect drove past her home and made a hand gesture to her.

The complainant requested a no trespass notice to be served to the subject.

May 17 Lamar J. Lake, 23, of Carol Stream, was cited for unlawful possession of cannabis by passenger near Melrose and Willow at 10:43 p.m.

May 16 Tiffani D. Preston, 22, of Homewood, was issued a citation for use of cannabis in a protected location at a bar in the 100 block of Addison at 1:02 a.m.

May 14 Nathaniel Bailey, 22, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for unlawful possession of can-

nabis by the driver, no front registration plate displayed, and no rear registration plate light, while Julian Williams, 21, of Villa Park, a passenger in the vehicle, was issued a citation for unlawful possession of cannabis in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at 2:16 a.m.

Eddie Jones, 20, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis while under the age of 21 and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at 8:35 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances May 17 A complainant in the 300 block of E. Church told police at 4:55 p.m. as he was riding his bicycle to school earlier in the day, he fell off of his bike. At that time, a grey sedan appeared behind him. The driver of the sedan asked the complainant if he needed a ride to school. The complainant declined. The suspect then drove from the scene northbound on Fair Avenue.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery May 19 Two incidents of retail theft were reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at 5:08 p.m. In the first incident, police said video surveillance shows the suspect concealing two boxes of Rogaine and exiting the store without paying for the merchandise. An investigation is pending. In the second incident, police said that upon arrival, a complainant related a suspect concealed a bottle of tequila inside of a large blue shoulder bag and exited the store without paying for the merchandise.

May 18 Unlawful use of a credit card was reported in the 500 block of S. York at 11:47 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect used his debit card information and fraudu-

lently withdrew cash from the victim’s bank account.

May 16 Theft of vehicle parts was reported at an auto dealership in the 100 block of N. Route 83 at 10:04 a.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect removed catalytic converters from five vehicles on the dealership’s lot. All five converters were cleanly cut with a saw. One catalytic converter was recovered on scene.

Residential burglary was reported in the 200 block of Maison at 9:45 a.m. A victim related an unknown suspect(s) entered his residence through an unlocked back door and removed several pieces of jewelry.

May 15 Deceptive practice was reported in the 800 block of N. York at noon. A victim told police that an unknown suspect, who posed as an Amazon security agent, called him to advise of fraudulent activities on his account.

The victim purchased gift cards and provided the security information to the suspect.

The victim provided the suspect with access to his smartphone and found the suspect withdrew money from his bank account.

May 14 A victim at a business in the 100 block of Industrial told police at 8:35 a.m. that the suspect, who is part owner of the company, allegedly took dental equipment and supplies from the business. The victim terminated the suspect and stated he would talk to his attorney about the missing property.

May 13-May 14 Theft was reported at a business in the 100 block of N. Addison. A complainant told po-

lice that an unknown suspect(s) took an American flag that was displayed outside of the business sometime between the above dates.

May 8-May 10

A victim told police that an unknown suspect made unauthorized withdrawals from his unemployment benefits debit card sometime between the above dates. The victim checked his account and found three unauthorized withdrawals. The victim has his card in his possession.

Feb. 10

Identity theft was reported in the 600 block of W. Third at 2:29 p.m. A victim told police that his wallet was stolen and an unknown suspect used his stolen driver’s license during two traffic stops. Subsequently, the victim’s driver’s license was suspended for failing to appear in court for traffic charges.

Nov. 17-Dec. 22, 2020 Theft was reported in the 400 block of W. Butterfield. Police said a complainant stated she noticed five unauthorized transactions on her mother’s credit card sometime between the above dates. The victim resides at an assisted living facility and had not made these transactions. The complainant stated the victim’s credit card and other property was also missing. The complainant contacted the bank and reported the incident.

Warrant arrest May 16 Police said Officers responded to the Elmhurst Hospital at 9:29 p.m. to assist the Cook County Sheriff’s Office with a wanted subject, identified as Titus L. Washington, 29, of Chicago. Police said the officer confirmed Washington had a valid warrant from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

Bond set at $3 million for Villa Park man accused of stabbing girlfriend to death Officers entered the residence and located two female children between three and six years old and a male child approximately one year old. Officers also found a trail of blood in the living room that led to the victim lying in the kitchen with an eight-inch butcher knife in her leg and apparent stab wounds to her torso.

According to Rivas, police officers provided immediate medical attention until paramedics arrived. DeLuna was transported to Elmhurst Hospital. She was pronounced deceased early the following morning.

On May 7, Rubio was served with an order of protection against him, with Esmeralda DeLuna named as the petitioner. With the order of protection in effect, Rubio had moved out of the home on Princeton Avenue. It is alleged that Rubio violated the order of protection against him and went to the Princeton address on May 19. It is further alleged that upon his arrival, Rubio broke into the home and stabbed DeLuna multiple times in the torso and in one of her legs. It is further alleged that after the attack, Rubio fled the scene.

An investigation into the alleged murder led authorities to Rubio, who was taken into custody at approximately 6:20 a.m. the following morning (May 20) while walking near Harvard

Avenue and Elm Street in Villa Park— less than half a mile from DeLuna’s home on Princeton Avenue.

An, 53, of Schaumburg, was charged with assault, battery and served a no-trespass notice in the 100 block of Industrial at 2:25 p.m. According to police, a victim reports the suspect entered the office and tackled the victim to the ground. The suspect then went into another office, returned with a hammer and attempted to strike the victim with the hammer, police said.

Victim claims suspect pulled knife after argument On May 14, police said officers responded to the 200 block of E. Butterfield at 9:29 p.m. for the report of a disturbance. The reporting officer met with the complainant who stated a suspect had pulled out a knife following a verbal argument. The complainant declined to pursue complaints.

Methamphetamine turns up in patient property inventory On May 19, police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital at 10:23 a.m. for a drug investigation. During an inventory of the patient’s property, hospital staff located suspected Gamma Hydroxybutyrate. The officer took possession of the unknown substance which later field tested positive for methamphetamine and placed it into evidence. Charges are pending lab results.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced on Friday that a Villa Park man had been charged with murder after he al- Marco-Antonio Rubio legedly stabbed the mother of his three children in her Villa Park home last week.

Marco-Antonio Rubio, 25, appeared at a May 21 bond hearing, where Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set bond at $3 million with 10 percent to apply. Rubio has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Rubio allegedly stabbed Esmeralda DeLuna, 24, in her home on May 19.

About nine hours after responding to the residence, police located and arrested Rubio while he was walking in Villa Park, a short distance from the victim’s home.

On Wednesday, May 19, at approximately 9:25 p.m., Villa Park police officers responded to the 300 block of North Princeton Avenue for a disturbance. Upon their arrival, officers knocked on the door and heard crying coming from inside.

There’s always a reason for gratitude My husband left this world in November. I miss him every day, in every way. Of course I do. I had someone tell me it would be weird if I wasn’t sad right now. She was right.

It’s hard to understand why it has to be this way. Why my future has changed suddenly and inexplicably.

Why he is there and I am here, when all we ever knew was us together.

Grief is very lonely. You want to be part of this world, but the person you long for most is part of another and no one really understands, although they want to and try.

Despite the grief, I am becoming grateful. I am leaning into it more and more every day. Or at least I am trying. I am filled with gratitude for the love we shared. For the love we share. Present tense.

Gratitude is a gift. It fills your heart and feeds your soul at the deepest of levels. It enhances life.

I am filled with gratitude for so many things. I guess it’s the whole glass half-full or half-empty concept.

Which do I choose? Because it is my choice. We all have the choice, and we all know the answer. Hard as it is, sometimes, it’s obvious.

At first I lamented, in the true sense of the word. We had 33 years together.

I lamented we didn’t get 50. I still do, sometimes, but mostly I try to give thanks for the 33.

We may have missed out on the 17 years between 33 and 50, but we could have had less. Much less. He got to see our children grow from babies to adulthood. We got to do this together. It was our life project. I’m grateful for that.

We grew together, for each other, with each other over the years. Many couples don’t get this chance, others grow apart instead of together. I’m grateful for our growth — together. It was fabulous.

We had a lasting and enduring love for one another. Still do. Not everyone can say that. How can I not be filled

to the brim with gratitude for a love so pure and strong and absolutely lifechanging? I am filled.

I’ve always been a proponent of gratitude, but lately I’ve come to believe it is life-changing. Finding gratitude in whatever circumstance you are in is key to growth and joy.

And there is always something to be grateful for. Always. If you are still alive and breathing, then each breath is cause for gratitude.

Gratitude is a blessing. My husband is a blessing. And the bigger the blessing — the more blessings you have —the more there is to lose.

That’s how I saw it at first, when I found myself in the eye of the hurricane of grief.

Seeing the loss is not the best way to perceive it, though. Not really. We can’t or shouldn’t live life afraid of loss. We can’t deny blessings because losing them will be hard. We can’t live life cautiously or safely. Or at least we shouldn’t.

Life is meant to be lived fully and deeply. It is meant to be filled with gifts and gratitude. It’s also filled with hard times, sometimes.

But the hard times can and will pass — if you are willing to see the gifts in front of you right now, in the present moment. All that takes is opening your eyes, your heart and your mind to the possibilities. Accept your gifts. Pull off the bows.

Cullerton: County to receive nearly $6 million for infrastructure improvement State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D- Villa Park) announced that DuPage County is set to receive nearly $6 million in grant money from the Rebuild Illinois plan.

“As the summer construction season gets underway, I am excited to see that our community will be receiving more funding to improve our roads and bridges,” Cullerton said.

“Modernizing our state’s infrastructure is vital to bringing travelers from near and far to Illinois.”

This round of Rebuild Illinois grants is the fourth of six rounds to be distributed to advance municipal, township and county projects across the state. The grants are overseen by the Illinois Department of Transportation and will total $1.5 billion when all rounds of grants are distributed.

“As more funding is secured, the projects in DuPage County will bring in good-paying jobs to the community,” Cullerton said. “Investments in

Glowiak Hilton plan would require insurance coverage for COVID-19 vaccines To ensure cost is not the deciding factor for residents thinking about getting the COVID-19 vaccine, State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) introduced legislation requiring insurance companies to cover the full cost of the vaccination.

“Getting vaccinated is the right thing to do for the safety of your loved ones and neighbors,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Not being able to afford the COVID-19 vaccine should not stop anyone from receiving it.”

Under the proposal, the coverage requirement would apply to individual and group health insurance policies and managed care plans under

Medicaid in effect since March 9, 2020. Companies would not be allowed to impose cost-sharing measures on patients.

“Some residents have chosen not to get the vaccine for health or personal reasons, but the cost should not be a deciding factor,” Glowiak Hilton said. “The sooner our state’s population is vaccinated, the sooner we can get our economy moving, build up our damaged industries and regain some sense of normalcy.”

House Bill 2406 awaits action by the Senate Insurance Committee.

Bill was active throughout his life; he was an avid runner and biker and enjoyed playing hockey into his 40s.

His interests were eclectic and extensive: poetry, cars, writing daily letters (on paper) to his kids, traveling, deer hunting, playing bridge, and reviving near-dead houseplants. A lifelong learner, he studied Buddhism and developed a meditation practice that embodied his dedication to enjoying the present and living life to the fullest. He also studied ecology and native plants and spent countless hours in the woods of southwestern Wisconsin, where he and Susan bought a cabin - the Farm where he worked for decades to restore a native prairie and oak savanna. He was committed to giving back to his community, and once retired he volunteered as a tutor in the city, as a peace recruiter in local high schools, and at the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

Throughout Bill’s struggle with dementia, he remained a kind, loving, and generous man with a quick smile, a light heart, and a mischievous sense of humor. He is greatly missed but lives on in all of those whose lives he touched. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 22 at Elmhurst Community Funeral Home, Ahlgrim Chapel. Kevin Calkins, a former United States Army Specialist 5 who served in the Vietnam War, will serve as the 2021 Grand Marshal. In 2015, Calkins helped raise funds to install a granite base for an unnoticed ground plaque located on the front lawn of the Wilder Mansion in honor of the 14 Elmhurst residents killed in action in Vietnam.

DuPage Foundation gives record number of grants Many donors stepped up, increased contributions during trying times

With health and human services needs in DuPage County at an all-time high, DuPage Foundation is pleased to announce it has awarded a record $702,860 in grants to 37 area not-forprofit organizations through its signature Community Needs Grant Program (Community Needs or CNGP). The program awards grants each spring to not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charities in the County who apply and are working in the area of health and human services.

Not only is the amount awarded a record, but the amount contributed to the program budget by individual donors through their DuPage Foundation

relationships is also a record. Donors invested an additional $307,388 increasing the Community Needs grant budget by 77 percent, said DuPage Foundation Vice President for Programs Barb Szczepaniak.

“The amount contributed by donors and donor-advisors through their DuPage Foundation funds was more than double the amount given in 2020,” she said. “It allowed the Grant Committee to fund 76 percent of the applications received, compared to 66 percent in the past, and this is on top of increasing the maximum grant award allocation to $25,000, a $5,000 increase over past

limits. We are so grateful and humbled by the community’s generosity and our donors’ concern for those in our community with the fewest resources.

“The overall budget for the grant program comes from income generated by unrestricted and field-of-interest endowments that donors have established with the Foundation over the past 35 years including the DuPage Forever Fund. That, coupled with the additional contributions from the Foundation’s donor-advisors, makes a bigger impact on the great need in our community for everything from housing and shelter to mental health

services and more.”

Decisions are made by a volunteer Grant Committee comprised of DuPage County residents who have deep knowledge of the not-for-profit community. The Committee is charged with decision-making regarding grant recipients and amounts.

DuPage Health Department receives ‘Pool Safely Grant’ of $860,000 The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has awarded the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) a $291,811 grant to provide assistance for enforcement, training, and education of pool safety requirements that are intended to save lives and prevent serious in-

juries. DCHD was one of five state and local governments selected to receive more than $860,000 in Pool Safely Grant Program (PSGP) grant funds, which are aimed at preventing pool and spa drownings, as well as drain entrapments.

“As a previous recipient of Pool

Safely grant funding, DCHD has strengthened partnerships and created great momentum in enforcement training and education throughout our region,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of DuPage County Health Department. “This funding will enable us to further expand our

educational impact to a much larger geographic and demographic radius with a special focus on children who are at the highest risk of drowning in pools or spas.”

York grads earn coveted Evans Scholarships

Three caddies notch 4-year college full rides

York High School’s Class of 2021 walked across the stage on Sunday, May 23, with hopes of COVID-19 in the rearview mirror and greener pastures ahead. For three graduates in particular, walking across the greens of golf courses for the last few years while achieving high grades, demonstrating outstanding character and earning favorable golf caddie records have scored them the Evans Scholars Foundation college tuition and housing scholarships worth an estimated $120,000 each over four years.

Spano Civella, Anthony Lococo and Paddy Toole, combined, have 15 years of experience as caddies and, thanks to their dedication on and off the course, the trio will attend college this fall without having to worry about finances.

Spano Civella Civella is headed to Miami University in Ohio where he plans to study entrepreneurship. The Medinah Country Club caddie was a sectional qualifier on York’s golf team, vice president of Italian Club and a member of the National Honor Society. His 4.2 GPA is a result of a goal he set at 14 years old: “To set my sights on the [Evans] scholarship and work hard every day.”

“I would tell young caddies that if you set goals and stay determined in your future path, you can and will achieve anything you want in life,” Civella continued. “Connecting with different members and staff during the six years I’ve worked as a caddie helped to nurture and build my character and personality. Being surrounded by successful people while working as a caddie…helped influence my decisions.”

Civella acknowledged that earning the Evans Scholarship was a life-changing moment for himself and his family.

“This will enable me the opportunity to attend the university of my choice for four years that in any other circumstance, my family simply could not afford,” he said.

A demonstrated financial need is a requirement for the Evans Scholarship in addition to outstanding character, academic excellence, and strong caddie records. According to U.S. News & World Report, college graduates from the class of 2019 who took out student loans borrowed more than $30,000 on average.

Recent York grad and Evans Scholar Paddy Toole lined up his shot perfectly when he used his knowledge of the golf course to ask his prom date an important question. The young couple enjoyed York’s prom recently as Toole looks ahead to attending Michigan State University.

He was also busy playing on York’s football and lacrosse teams, being a member of National Honor Society and as a mentor for freshmen and transfer students. Toole will study mechanical engineering and says caddying also helped him develop important connections.

“I cultivated many relationships with fellow caddies and the members for whom I caddie,” said Toole.

“Whether starting the caddie shack foosball league, playing cards with other caddies or giving a golfer a smile and nod after a great shot…I see the impact and value of working hard, developing relationships and making the best of every day, just like my dad does.”

Toole’s dad, Matt, has been a very visible Elmhurst resident the last several years, championing awareness for ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, a devastating illness he has been battling for several years.

“The work ethic I gained by caddying multiple times a day, balancing school and being a two-sport athlete, Paddy Toole “The Chick Evans Scholarship and helping my dad has helped in in will enable me to get a world class all facets of my life and has helped education at my dream school of me find success,” said Toole.

Anthony Lococo Echoing his fellow scholars, Anthony Lococo is clear that caddying builds character and responsibility.

“It has provided me the opportunity to bond with members and other caddies and has ultimately helped shape me into the man I am today,” he said.

The four-year caddie from Butterfield Country Club will study finance at the University of Kansas this fall. Another high-achieving student with a 3.7 GPA, Anthony was a member of York’s golf team, National Honor Society and assistant captain of the hockey team.

“The Evans Scholarship has been super impactful on my family and I ever since it enabled me to go pursue my dreams of attending a university,” Lococo said. “I would tell other potential candidates that hard work pays off and I’d encourage other caddies to not get discouraged if [they] don’t get out for a loop, because perseverance will pay off.

For Lococo, a hockey player for 10 years, his highlight was caddying for Chicago Blackhawks Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp.

“This was an unforgettable experience,” he said. “I got to meet my favorite Blackhawk players.”

Toole recalls the time his golfer asked the young caddie’s club ad-

vice on the 16th hole. After Toole offered his thoughts, the pair discovered the golfer had hit a holein-one.

“This was a great memory that I will never forget,” Toole said.

Similarly, Civella used his experience as a caddie and sectional qualifier on the York golf team to offer advice to a golfer who solicited it.

“I remember during an outing

one year, I gave a guest a read on hole 17,” Civella recalled. “He sunk the putt -- it was a 35-foot putt!”

Since 1930, more than 11,000 young men and women have graduated as Evans Scholars, and according to the Western Golf Association and Evans Scholars Foundation website, a record 1,045 scholars are enrolled in 19 leading universities for the 2020-21 academic year.

State’s revenue picture improves as economy recovers

Illinois budget officials said May 13 that revenues are flowing into state coffers at a faster pace than previously estimated, meaning lawmakers will have more money to work with as they try to finalize a new budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

The Governor’s Office of Management and Budget officially raised its revenue estimate for the current fiscal year by more than $1.4 billion and by $842 million for the upcoming fiscal year.

In February, Pritzker proposed filling the budget hole with about $1.5 billion in revenue enhancements that included closing what he called “corporate tax loopholes,” but which Republicans prefer to call “business incentives.”

Pritzker’s tax proposals, at least until they have a clearer idea of how big of a budget hole needs to be filled.

“I think there’s a number of things that the governor has proposed that we’ve asked members to take a deep dive and to be mindful of to think about how it would affect their constituents vis-à-vis the overall state budget…We remain very, very invested in trying to get a responsible budget to the governor’s desk,” said Rep. Michael Zalewski, D-Riverside, who chairs the House Revenue Committee.

Pritzker’s budget plan was drafted before Congress passed the American Rescue Plan, which will send about $8.1 billion in fiscal relief to the state. But the U.S. Treasury Department is still in the process of finalizing rules for how that money can be spent, and on May 13, Harris cautioned against trying to use it to fill the state’s ongoing structural budget deficit.

“We know that this is an amount of money that can be spent over the course of four years, so we have to be very thoughtful as how we spend it over a period of time,” he said. “We know it’s largely one-time money. So I think we’re all going to want to look at it really carefully to be sure that we’re not building this into a base that then there would be a cliff when this money expired.”

State and local governments also stand to receive significant federal aid. According to Harris, the federal law will send about $5.9 billion to Illinois cities and towns, $5 billion to public schools, $1.3 billion to colleges and universities, $1.7 billion for public health programs, and $1.35 billion for child care and Head Start programs.

The Treasury Department has published interim rules that outline general categories of spending that qualify under the law. They include responding to the public health emergency or its negative economic impacts; providing premium pay to essential workers during the pandemic; making up for revenue lost due to the pandemic; and investing in water, sewer or broadband infrastructure.

The interim rules also say the funds may not be used for funding pension plans or paying down debt.

Pritzker and Comptroller Susana Mendoza have said Illinois should be allowed to use the money to repay short-term loans the state took out from the Federal Reserve during the pandemic, and they have urged federal officials to make that change when the final rules are published in July.

Elmhurst Police announce upcoming traffic enforcement period The Elmhurst Police Department continues to take part in a year-long traffic enforcement grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), which is providing funds for additional enforcement of DUI, seatbelt, and distracted driving laws. This grant allows extra officers to be on patrol looking for impaired drivers, seatbelt violations, and distracted drivers with a goal of saving lives by reducing fatal and serious injury crashes.

Extra officers will be on duty starting May 19 and continuing through the Memorial Day weekend. The

majority of this extra enforcement will take place during the overnight hours, statistically the most dangerous time to be out on the roads. Motorists are encouraged to drive safely and always buckle up.

Anyone planning on drinking should make alternate travel arrangements or appoint a designated driver.

Motorists are also encouraged to contact police if they see a vehicle that appears to be driven by an intoxicated driver.

This enforcement campaign is supported through federal funds administered by IDOT.

The investigation also yielded a firearm in a hotel room rented by Ramsey that matched the description provided by the victim as the gun Ramsey pointed at her head.

Additionally, a DNA sample from Ramsey was later confirmed to be a match with DNA evidence collected.

On Sept. 12, 2019, Ramsey voluntarily came to the Oak Brook Police Department and was interviewed, after which he was taken into custody. He was charged on Sept. 13, 2019. The following day, Ramsey appeared in Bond Court where bond was denied. He has been held in custody since that time at the DuPage County Jail.

“I’m sure this experience has been very traumatic for the victim and I commend her for having the courage to face her attacker in open court,” Berlin said.

Ramsey’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 9, for return of the Pre-sentence report.. Because the crime was committed with a firearm, sentence guidelines dictate that Ramsey will face a minimum penalty of 84 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

On Thursday, May 20, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced that a jury had found Julius Ramsey, 38, of Chicago, guilty of sexually assaulting at gunpoint, a female employee of an Oak Brook hotel in the fall of 2019. The jury returned their verdict after approximately two and one-half hours of deliberations following a threeday-long trial.

On Sept. 9, 2019, at approximately 11:48 a.m., Oak Brook police were called to the Hyatt House located on 22nd Street in Oak Brook for a sexual assault that had occurred in a vacant room. Upon their arrival, officers interviewed the victim and began an investigation.

Through the course of their investigation, officers learned that at approximately 11:20 a.m., Ramsey forced the woman at gunpoint into a vacant room at the hotel where he sexually assaulted her on several occasions, put the gun to her head and threatened to kill her. At some point in time, the victim was able to escape the room and reported the assault.

She was immediately taken to a local hospital for medical attention.

Man found guilty of sexually assaulting woman at Oak Brook hotel

The Illinois State Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution May 19 calling on all public schools to return to in-person learning during the upcoming school year.

The resolution doesn’t institute any mandates or requirements for Illinois schools to follow, but shows unified support from ISBE for an upcoming decision by State Superintendent Carmen Ayala.

In a weekly blog posted to the ISBE website, Ayala said she plans to make the mandate official “at the conclusion of the current academic year,” meaning the change will not take effect until next school year.

Once Ayala issues an official declaration, all public schools will be required to return to in-person learn-

ing for the 2021-2022 academic year with no exceptions. Only students who are both unvaccinated and under a quarantine order from the Illinois Department of Health will be eligible to continue remote learning.

A spokeswoman for ISBE said they expect the bulk of the population eligible for remote learning at the start of the school year to be under 12 years old.

“We encourage families to use the summer months to ensure that eligible children get vaccinated,” she said. “The vaccines are safe, effective, and proven to protect you from getting sick.”

Students who do not qualify for remote learning may seek home or hospital instruction if a doctor determines they will miss at least 10 days of school due to a medical condition.

“Matt believes that coaching is not just about teaching the skills technique and strategy within the narrow confines of the sport,” York athletic director Rob Wagner said.

Monken, who started playing golf at a young age, has been a teacher in York’s physical education department and a coach at the school the past six years. He attended Eastern Illinois University and worked at Village Greens of Woodridge Golf Course for five years.

Monken was York’s assistant girls golf coach last year, working closely with Tilden.

“Matt is eagerly looking forward to bringing his experience and ex-

pertise to the golf program while adopting similar methods that Coach Tilden implemented during her successful time at York,” Wagner said.

Buckley excels at RPI Former York boys golfing standout Matt Buckley had a strong freshman season on the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute boys golf team.

Buckley earned Liberty League rookie of the year honors and also made the Liberty League all-conference first team. The awards were chosen by the conference head coaches.

RPI, based out of Troy, New York, won the Liberty League title for the first time and played in its first-ever NCAA championship.

Buckley tied for 76th place at the NCAA championship with a fourday total of 310, which included rounds of 73, 80, 80 and 77. That effort earned him Liberty League rookie of the week honors, an accolade he also won for his efforts the week of April 26.

Buckley also took second this season at the Skidmore dual with a 75 and took second with a 72 at the Liberty League Preview. Buckley then tied for fourth at the Liberty Championship with a three-day plus-3 total of 147.

RPI won the conference title by 14 strokes and earned an automatic NCAA bid. RPI made the cut at nationals and took 17th with a combined 1,221 score.

The Elmhurst Cougars 10U travel softball team won the May Day Slugfest tournament with a 10-2 championship-game win over the Lemont Lightning. Elmhurst hitters generated 44 runs during the tournament on 33 hits. Cougars’ pitchers combined for 43 strikeouts and tossed a combined no-hitter in pool play. Young man donates his grant to Elmhurst Eagles

Funds will establish scholarship program for players

Colton Gumino has been playing with the Elmhurst Eagles Football organization since he was in 1st grade. When COVID-19 hit, Colton was invited to play spring football at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. As Illinois shut down, he decided to leave his friends and family and move down to Florida for the semester.

Colton is in 8th grade but played on the Varsity High School team at IMG, where he excelled. He loved the experience and would not have changed his decision for the world. At IMG Academy, Colton was able to keep up his straight A’s in the classroom and was outstanding on the field as well.

For his academic and athletic accomplishments at IMG, Colton was granted $1500. He decided to give back and donate the funds to the Elmhurst Eagles.

The money will be used for a scholarship fund which can cover the cost of up to three players, who may not be able to afford to play football. The Elmhurst Eagles has done so much for Colton over the years and wanted to give someone that same opportunity.

Colton Gumino has decided to move back home to Elmhurst and play football at York High School. This was a big decision and just wanted to play for his hometown and Coach Fitzgerald.

Colton currently holds full ride offers from Iowa State and Incarna Word football programs.

Colton will have a busy summer as he’s been invited to attend Iowa, Purdue, Wisconsin, Duke, Notre Dame, and Minnesota football camps. He looks forward to starting summer football at York.

As a final celebration, students at Lincoln School were invited to put painted handprints all over the bricks of the school building. Kids were invited to write on the walls indoors, too. Most wrote about classes and activities at Lincoln and the friends they made along the way, including teachers and staff.

Convoy begins and ends at Veterans Memorial at Wilder Park Convoy will include first responder emergency vehicles and preselected special service and military vehicles only.

The route will cover 16 miles of Elmhurst, with vehicles passing through each ward.

Route is within 1/4 mile of most homes and several public parking lots if you are unable to walk to the route.

Convoy will be followed by a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at 11:00 a.m.

The first look at Lincoln

Lincoln School was built in 1916 and served the Spring Road subdivision back in the early 1900s. It has continued to be an active and vital part of School District 205, but alas, is showing the ravages of age. A “Last Look at Lincoln” event was held Saturday, May 22 for students, alums, parents, neighbors and other residents to pay respects and bid farewell.
