Community Bank of Elmhurst robbed

Perpetrator displays gun to teller; absconds with undisclosed amount of money

According to a release issued by Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth, Elmhurst police are currently investigating an armed bank robbery that

occurred at the main branch of Community Bank of Elmhurst at 330 Butterfield Rd. On Thursday, May 18 at 5 p.m., a white male described as about age 35, about 6’, 160 lbs, with a buzz-

cut, wearing sunglasses and a white/ blue striped hoodie with blue jeans entered the bank and announced a robbery to the teller. It was reported that a handgun was displayed to the teller in the suspect’s waistband.

The offender fled the scene in a white Toyota Tundra pick-up with the lift gate down, heading eastbound on Butterfield Rd. with an undetermined amount of cash.

Elmhurst police evidence techni-

cians have processed the scene and are currently working with agents from the FBI. Anyone with information regarding this crime is asked to contact the Elmhurst Police Department at 630-530-3050.

It was raining pretty heavily on the morning of Friday, May 19 when members of the Elmhurst Police Department and the Elmhurst Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association were planning to be on the roofs of two area Dunkin’ Donuts in Elmhurst. Members of the Elmhurst Police Department may not have been “on top” of the Dunkin’ Donuts, but we know they’re always on top of their game! It was later reported that between the two locations, more than $5000 was raised for Illinois Special Olympics.

It’s hard to imagine anyone living in Chicago who is not familiar with disc jockey Terri Hemmert of WXRT radio, if not from her radio show, then from her many other endeavors — her teaching at Columbia School of Broadcasting, her lectures for the Chicago Symphony, her involvement with BeatleFest, now in its 43rd year.

What is she most proud of?

“I beat cancer!” Hemmert proudly told The Independent in an exclusive interview.

Hemmert has had quite a few health problems over recent years, cancer being just one of them. Having beat cancer has given her new energy and a new lease on life — although she admittedly still gets tired easily.

The Independent happened to talk to Hemmert on a day she was leaving after her on-air shift at WXRT to go to Wrigley Field for the Cubs game where she and a group of others were to be recognized before the opening pitch.

To be honored at Elmhurst College graduation Hemmert will be in town on Saturday, May 27 for graduation ceremonies at her alma mater, Elmhurst College, which will bestow an Honorary Doctorate on the popular radio personality.

“I am shocked, I mean, I am

stunned to be receiving an Honorary Doctorate.

I wonder if they know I was on academic probation in my sophomore year?” she said with a laugh. “I don’t know if that Terri Hemmert makes me eligible for a doctorate!”

She also said she never thought her name would appear in the same sentence with Doc Severinson, who will receive a similar honor on Saturday.

Severinson was the long-time band leader on the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.

Rubbing elbows with celebrities As a disc jockey for more than 40 years, Hemmert has had ample opportunities to meet a number of celebrities throughout her career. Asked her favorite, she’s quick to answer.

“Paul McCartney,” said the long-time Beatles fan. “He is just a well-grounded, nice guy, very real, very genuine and down to earth.”

She recalled a few years ago when McCartney was coming to perform at Wrigley Field and she was waiting in the wings along with several VIPs including then-Governor Pat Quinn.

“I held my hand out [to McCartney] and said, ‘hi, I’m Terri’ and right away, he said, ‘hey I know you!’ He

remembered me and gave me a big hug.”

That even impressed Governor Quinn.

“The governor said, ‘Wow, you even got a hug,’” she recalled. “I was just happy that [McCartney] remembered me!”

Other people she has met include Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono. “Yoko Ono is an amazing person,” Hemmert said. “I worked with her when we built the Peace exhibit and she’s so funny, very bright and a sweet person, not at all like her reputation for having split up the Beatles or anything like that.”

Regarding her career in radio, Hemmert said, “the Beatles were responsible for all this.”

Where it all began…

“Growing up in a small town in Ohio, I first saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan,” she said. “Then one day, I was reading a fan magazine (hidden inside my geography book) and I saw Jim Stagg pictured inside meeting the Beatles. I thought to myself, if I could become a disc jockey, I could meet famous people like the Beatles.

I read up on Jim Stagg a little more and found out how he had been on the road with them. Later, he loaned me all his tapes.”

While she was still in high school, a friend invited Hemmert to visit her for senior visitation weekend at Elmhurst College.

“Just come out and check this school out, she said,” Hemmert recalled. “By the end of the weekend, I knew that’s where I wanted to be for sure. It just felt like home to me, like I really belonged. It was the perfect school for me.”

College has major impact on her life Hemmert said her education at Elmhurst College affected her “in a profound way.”

“The school prepares you not just for success in your career, it also shows you how to change the world, how to look out for somebody other than yourself,” she said. “My parents instilled in me to give back and so did Elmhurst College and that’s the most satisfying thing. You can have all the success in the world, but without giving back, it’s just so empty. So I’ve always been active in giving back to the community.”

Her advice to the graduates of Elmhurst College: “When people start college, people often don’t even know what they want to do,” she said. “If you have that fire in your belly and your pulse races and you can barely stand up, then follow that! There are no guarantees in life, but if you start something and it’s not the right thing, chances are it will still lead you to find something along the way.

“But its the journey that’s important.”

Local company helps Int’l Humane Society save dogs slated for slaughter

It sounded a bit sensational, perhaps a little over-the-top when the Independent heard about a local effort to “rescue dogs from Korean restaurants.” It conjured up scenes from Lady & The Tramp, where dogs might be sharing a plate of spaghetti in the alley behind a restaurant until someone comes and snatches them away.

The real story isn’t quite that grandiose, but it’s a story nonetheless.

Elmhurst Animal Care Center (EACC) has been part of saving dogs from overseas along with a local company called Magnificent Mutts & Meows, owned by Linda Latelle.

She was contacted by the Humane Society International to assist finding a place for ten dogs saved from a meat market in South Korea.

“They were named ‘The Magnificent 10,’” said Becky Nemchock, who put the Independent in touch with Latelle for an interview. “As you can imagine, they needed lots of love, attention and patience. EACC was able to provide them with lots of care and a number of them have been adopted to loving homes.”

Latelle was able to tell her story.

“I’m partners with the Humane Society International (HSI), I’m considered an emergency placement partner,” she told the Independent in an exclusive interview. “I’m the only one in Illinois.”

She went on to say that one of the missions of HSI is to go over to South Korea and other countries like Thailand, where they do “barbaric torturing” to some of these animals before they are eaten.

“That was the mission of HSI, to help dog meat farmers and close them down.”

Before blaming the dog “farmers,” one must hear the whole story.

“South Korea used to be such a poor country that people had to eat anything that moved, just to survive,” Latelle said. “It’s not that way anymore but people who have farmed dogs over the years don’t know any other way of life. Most farmers want to change, but don’t know how, so the HSI helps the dog meat farmers by taking the dogs and helping them set up a different kind of farm. Most are receptive.”

She said after closing down a few farms recently, HSI found themselves with ten dogs left and no place for them.

That’s when they contacted Magnificent Mutts & Meows for a rescue effort.

The Magnificent 10 came to the U.S. on Feb. 5 of this year, Latelle said, and three are still up for adoption. But then a few weeks ago, she explained, she was asked to take six more dogs.

“This person was getting complaints from his neighbors about the 24/7 barking and the stench that goes with it,” she said.

“The person who owned the dogs was a bit belligerent about them to HSI, saying, ‘Know what? If you want them, take them.’

“HSI said okay, but tell us more about your dogs, are they pets? At that point, the owner admitted that they were not pets, they were there for him and his buddies to hang them, watch them die and then slaughter it, cook it and eat it. They claim the more torture the dog sustains, the more tender the meat! Can you imagine?”

Latelle said dogs are often hanged or beaten, some are electrocuted, some are literally skinned alive.

This is a dog who was saved from a farm in Kosovo. As you can see, he is curled up in a fetal position, almost inside himself. Linda Latelle of Magnificent Mutts says rescued dogs often come to her in this condition. “On Rescue Day she was found in a hell camp on the brink of death due to starvation,” Latelle said. “Her back left foot has a part missing from what the vet thinks is human cruelty.

After rescue and being treated with anti-inflammatories (and pain killers), she walks and runs without issue. When first rescued, she screamed when a human touched her.”

“Part of my mission is to educate people that this really DOES go on and it doesn’t need to. With a collaborate effort, we could get [this treatment] made illegal and move forward.”

Some people have asked Latelle why she takes the dogs out of the country.

“I’ve been asked to help and part of my mission is educational not only in the U.S., but also all over the world,” she said. “If I can save a life, that’s my purpose. I want more peo-

ple to be aware of what’s going on.”

Once the dogs are brought here from overseas, they are taken to a clinic like EACC where they are given their shots and are spayed or neutered as needed. Some need medical attention, sometimes even surgery, but the dogs end up being nice pets for families with children, according to Latelle.

At this time, Latelle is still seeking loving homes for some of the dogs and hopes people will step forward to adopt one or two.

“Just to watch them come in, scared, timid, fearful,” she said, “then shortly after, you see them come out of their shell and become ‘real dogs’ which give — and get —

the warm fuzzies.”

“People are also welcome to visit our Facebook page, we are always updating all the fun stuff there all the time.”

It is Latelle’s hope that the readers of the Independent will consider adopting a dog, or at the very least, share the story of these dogs and how they live prior to rescue.

Let’s just say, they’re not having spaghetti in the alley with a lady friend.

District honors volunteers at Annual Awards Banquet Local residents among honorees

Here is the same dog saved from Kosovo, who is on the mend, happy and healthy and ready for adoption by a loving family. Linda Latelle says that’s the best thing about her business — watching the dogs after they have been rescued to see how much they change. After being treated with love and patience, this dog is very loving to children and other dogs.

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County recently honored its corps of dedicated volunteers at its annual volunteer appreciation celebration.

During the last fiscal year, 884 full-time, 183 group and 2,616 onetime volunteers contributed more than 64,000 hours with an in-kind value of more than $1.6 million.

“We are extremely grateful to all our volunteers for their help connecting people to nature,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore. “The dedication of our individual, group and corporate volunteers is inspiring and humbling.”

In addition to acknowledging the efforts of all of its volunteers, the Forest Preserve District also recognized individuals with its Director’s Award. Among the recipients is Tom Greene of Elmhurst (Special Services).

This year’s President’s Award recipients includes Dianne Entwhistle of Elmhurst (Willowbrook).

May 13 A victim in the 100 block of Haven told police at around 6:15 p.m. that while traveling in a vehicle, she and the suspect became involved in an argument. At one point the suspect threw an item at the victim; the victim retaliated by throwing an item at the suspect. The suspect and a witness then left the vehicle on foot. The victim declined to pursue the incident.

Child endangerment

May 13 Police said that subsequent to a complaint of two children left unattended in a vehicle in the 1000 block of S. York at around 1:26 p.m., officers located the victims in a mini-van in the parking lot. Jessica Miller, 33, of Elmhurst, was located a short time later in the parking lot. Miller was charged with endangering the life of a child.

May 11 A complainant at a gas station in the 400 block of N. York told police at around 11:48 a.m. that a frequent customer has previously yelled at patrons, accused them of being terrorists and threatened to have other customers deported. On the above date, the suspect came into the station and started an argument over the belief people cut in line in front of her. She was issued a no trespass notice.

May 10-May 11 A victim in the 600 block of S. Hillside told police at around 7:26 a.m. that the windows on both of his vans’ sliding doors were damaged overnight. A search of the area for a possible object used to break the windows yielded no results.

Disorderly conduct

May 16 Lisa Coglianese, 53, of Addison, was charged with disorderly conduct in the 200

block of E. Lake at around 7:13 p.m. Police said officers responded for a possible domestic at the above location. According to police, Coglianese was visiting a resident at an extended care center. She was verbally abusive to her, the resident and staff, according to police. She then took the victim in a wheelchair out into the parking lot after being told she could not, police said, and was yelling at officers.

May 17 Aaron Andrews, 40, of Palatine, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage near Route 83 and I-290 subsequent to a traffic stop at around 12:09 a.m.

May 15 Gary Mikolajczak, 65, of Addison, was charged with DUI, resisting a police officer and improper driving on the roadway near Route 83 and North Avenue at around 3:15 a.m. Police said a reporting officer responded to the above location for Mikolajczak, who had fallen asleep at the wheel. According to police, the officer attempted to make contact with Mikolajczak; however he began to flee the scene, but the officer caught up with him moments later.

May 14 • Briana Lane, 27, of Aurora, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and disobeying a traffic control device in the 100 block of N. York at around 11:43 p.m.

• Police said that subsequent to a report of an intoxicated driver in the 400 block of N. York at around 1:43 a.m., the reporting officer located the vehicle moving in and out of its lane, almost striking two curbs. Stephanie Karcz, 34, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and expired registration.

• A victim in the 200 block of E. Fremont Ave. told police at around 3:01 a.m. that he picked up Anthony Moser, 21, of Racine, Wis., in the city and was owed a fare. Upon reaching his destination, police said Moser exited the taxi without paying, but unknowingly left his driver’s license in the taxi and was later located walking in the area. Moser was charged with theft of services.

May 13 Doubton Holmes, 33, of Broadview, was charged with DUI, failure to yield and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Roosevelt at around 3:43 a.m.

May 12 • Michele Arling, 57, of Joliet, was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, making an improper turn at an intersection and no insurance near Lake and York at around 5:33 p.m.

• Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near County Line Road and Lake Street at around 11:17 p.m., an officer made contact with occupants of the vehicle and smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle. According to police, William Farrell, 18, of Elmhurst, admitted to drinking alcohol and being under the legal age limit. He was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor. A juvenile suspect was issued citations for operating a vehicle with a BAC of over .000,

improper lane usage, speeding, disobeying a stop sign and no insurance and released to his parents.

May 11 An unnamed suspect was issued citations for possession of alcohol by a minor and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and York at around 12:26 a.m.

Possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia, controlled substance

May 16 • Edward Eagins, 24, of Westchester, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, driving while license suspended, improper lighting and no insurance near York and Lexington at around 11:50 p.m.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Eagins was found to be wanted out of Berkeley Police Department. He was also in possession of a straw with cocaine residue inside.

• Clarissa Vasquez, 28, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis, no valid driver’s license and use of an electronic device while driving, and Damaris Ramos, 28, of Chicago, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Oaklawn at around 11:11 a.m.

• Xuyang Wang, 18, of Wheeling, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of a fictitious ID, possession of alcohol by a minor, no valid driver’s license and speeding near York and Grand at around 12:42 a.m. Police said that Wang was found to be in possession of ecstasy pills, acid soaked paper wrapped in foil, cannabis and open alcohol.

Franks, Jr., 19, of Chicago were issued citations the possession of cannabis at Wilder Park at around 7:35 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a complaint of drug activity in the park, officers located the four suspects near the Wilder Park Conservatory. They were observed smoking cannabis, and all four suspects admitted to it, according to police. Two cannabis cigarettes were recovered from Cannon, police said.

May 12 • Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Spring and McKinley Avenue at around 7:55 p.m., officers conducted a K-9 search of the vehicle which yielded cannabis, a digital scale and a fraudulent ID. A juvenile suspect admitted to having cannabis and was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a fraudulent ID, no insurance and disobeying a stop sign.

He was released to his parents.

• Police said a juvenile suspect reportedly took a silver men’s ring and Garmin heart rate tracker at around 9:28 p.m. from a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 without paying. The complainant did not wish to sign complaints; however, they wanted the suspect served with a no trespass notice.

May 11 • Brandon Flowers, 27, of Waukegan, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of open alcohol in a vehicle improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Pick at around 12:26 a.m.

• Laura Fonseca, 53, of Bridgeview, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near Spring and Butterfield at around 6:01 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances

May 14 A complainant in the 1000 block of S. Prospect Ave. told police at around 11:39 a.m. that while working security for ongoing church services, he was approached by two suspects described as white females who wanted access to the school library to look at paintings and then walk the halls. The complainant told them they could not. Both females left the building; then were looking in parked vehicles in the lot.

Both left when they noticed they were being watched. One of the suspects was described as being between 17 and 21 years old, with blonde hair, wearing a cream colored top with a cream colored skirt; her voice sounded like a young girl when talking to the complainant.

The second suspect was described as being around 15 years old, 5’6” with brown hair, wearing a blue top with a black skirt, acne on her face and a voice sounding like a young girl.

May 13 • Police said an officer responded to a suspicious auto parked in the Adelaide parking garage at around 11:10 a.m., approached the vehicle on foot, and observed action consistent with inappropriate behavior. Jamail Bradley, 31, of Elmhurst, was charged with prowling.

• A suspect told police at around 3:39 p.m. that a second suspect entered a restaurant in the 600 block of W. North Ave. and requested a cup for water. The second suspect then filled the cup with a soft drink and left the store without paying for it. Suspect 2 went next door and confronted by the first suspect about the theft.

A mutual shove/push episode ensued. Due to conflicting statements no charges were filed. A trespass notice was issued to the first suspect, prohibiting her from entering the restaurant.

May 16 An employee for a food store in the 100 block of E. Schiller told police at around 1:58 p.m. that she assisted a customer with several boxes of infant formula. During this interaction, the customer took four boxes of Enfamil® and ran out of the store without paying for them. The suspect was described as a white male, 25 years old, around 5’7” about 170 pounds, with blond hair, a white shirt and blue jeans.

May 15-May 16 A victim in the 400 block of Holly told police that an unknown suspect made several unauthorized transactions on his Bank of America credit card account between the above dates. The victim contacted his bank, canceled his account, and canceled any pending transactions.

May 12-May 16 While the manager of a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 was at the bank making a deposit at around 6:15 p.m., the bank advised that a bill was counterfeit because the watermark was on the wrong side of the bill even though it passed the marker test. Bond set at $150,000 for teacher accused of possessing child pornography Suspect is resident of Elmhurst

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that bond has been set at $150,000 with 10% to apply for a St. Charles East High School teacher charged with possession of child pornography. Gregory Burgener, 63, of 437 W. Fremont, Elmhurst, appeared in Bond Court this afternoon where he was charged with two counts of Possession of Child Pornography, a Class 1 Felony.

Pursuant to an investigation led by the Elmhurst Police Department, Burgener was taken into custody on charges of Possession of Child Pornography. The investigation is still in progress.

Lions Club to host a free picnic for community On May 15, Mayor Morley proclaimed June 30, through July 4, Lions Clubs International Week in Elmhurst. This is for the 100 year anniversary of Lions Clubs International and the 77 years which the Elmhurst Lions have served their community.

The Elmhurst Lions Club is showing its gratitude on Saturday, June 3, by hosting a free picnic at the Hub Tent in Berens Park between 11 a.m.

Since the club’s chartering in 1940, its members have worked on a variety of projects in the local community, such as $100,000 grant to the Diabetes Center at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, as well as vision and hearing screenings.

Proceeds from past fundraising events have gone to providing Scholarships and Community Service Awards, as well as donations to the Elmhurst College Speech – Language – Hearing Clinic, United Community

Concerns, Camp Lions, Leader Dogs, and Spectrios (Deicke Center), plus the Playground for Everyone.

The club will be providing free vision pre-screenings at the Elmhurst Public Library on June 7, and July 2.

This pre-screening is for early detection of vision challenges in children 6 months to 6 years old.

Church grateful for support of DuPagePads Homeless Shelter

Elmhurst Presbyterian Church (EPC) is extending a big thanks to the community as it wraps up its 22nd year as host of a DuPagePads Interim (Overnight) Housing program. Every Saturday night from October to May, about 35 guests from DuPage County who do not have permanent homes rely on the site for meals, fellowship and a place to sleep.

“EPC could not fulfill this important mission to serve without the tremendous support of so many people from the Elmhurst community,” said Diana Riekse, EPC member and volunteer coordinator.

“It takes a lot of heart, love, time, faith and money to make sure we’re providing our less fortunate neighbors a safe and supportive place to spend the night.”

DuPagePads provides a proven solution to end homelessness: housing coupled with support services and employment to assist people in obtaining stable housing. EPC’s overnight site is one of 30 in the area that provide the critical basic needs that are the initial steps in an individual’s journey to housing.

A community effort A volunteer team at EPC manages the site and works with five other Elmhurst area churches: Faith Christian Reformed Church; First Congregational Church (UCC), Visitation Catholic Church, Christ United Methodist Church and St. Peters UCC. The PADS site counts on more than 50 volunteers every weekend during its operating season.

EPC is especially grateful for the support of the Elmhurst Police and first responders who help keep the site safe; to Elmhurst Hospital for laundering linens and towels; to the Elmhurst Public Library for providing access to services; Elmhurst College for volunteering; and OMG! Brunch & Boutique and Lezza’s Spumoni & Desserts that often donate food.

We can do more The church in charge of running the shelter for a weekend provides a warm dinner, breakfast and sack lunch, and monitors the site.

However, EPC has plans to go above and beyond the minimum site requirements.

“We recently painted and refreshed all the rooms with the help of volunteers, and donations from Bill Fisher from Renaissance Painted Finishes and JC Licht. We have big plans to make additional much needed capital improvements and roll-out a new

resource center for guests,” said Riekse. “This center will go a long way in providing the opportunity for individuals who are homeless to find needed information such as train schedules, job openings, and community services. These tools can have a lasting, positive impact on a person’s health and financial stability.”

To make the Elmhurst shelter better and the resource center a reality, EPC is inviting the community to a ‘Sinatra 101’ dinner, concert and silent auction at Elmhurst College on June 4, 2017.

Dine and dance with the ‘Chairman of the Board’ Fun meets fundraising at “Sinatra 101”on Sunday, June 4 at Elmhurst College. The event features a dinner followed by Jeffrey Deutsch and the Elmhurst All-Stars performing Frank Sinatra’s greatest hits. All proceeds support the DuPagePads’ capital campaign for the site at Elmhurst Presbyterian.

Deutsch is a 30-year veteran performer who loves Jazz and loves to recreate all of the fun of The Great American Soundbook. Deutsch and his band are sure to provide a night of fun and spectacular music.

Tickets are available now. Select from dinner, concert and dessert for $80 per person or concert and dessert only for $40 per person.

Mrs. Calderisi is the best teacher because she taught me how to draw and create crafts better. My favorite activity we created I art class was when we drew the Japanese flower and painted it with tempera paint. I also enjoy that every year, we draw and color a self portrait of ourselves. The Laurel Burch cats were spectacular! Right now in art class, we are creating culture projects.

For the Culture projects, we chose a country and we are creating a bottle person made from a 2 liter bottle, and we make it look like a real person from that country using fabric, yarn and silk flowers. The country I am researching is the Philippines. Mrs. Calderisi is a hardworking, compassionate, amusing and clever teacher. I enjoy how for free day, the we earn all of our stars, she give us a choice to go outside, use clay or play games inside. I was especially amused when we worked with clay. I feel joyful in the art room.

My teacher is the best because he can play the flute, the ukulele, the guitar, the piano and the cello. He is really good at singing, some of the songs that he sings are in different languages.

He can make you memorize a song in four days. I also liked that time when Mr. Buys let us write our own songs, and then he sang the songs. Mr. Buys is a really nice teacher. I remember the joy of finding out that Mrs. Franken was going to be my third grade teacher, there was also a part of me that was scared. Family Living Field School sends children’s books to Malawi During the week of May 22, close to 5000 children’s books were taken from Elmhurst to Malawi. The books were donated by the parents and students at Field Elementary School during a book drive by the Girl Scout troops at Field. The book drive was in partnership with the African Library Project (ALP). The goal for ALP book drives is 1000 books; the Field book drive greatly topped that goals several times over.

One of the Girl Scouts at Field School works on sorting and packing a box of books to send to Malawi, as part of the African Library Project (ALP). Almost 5000 book were donated by the parents and students at Field. The Girl Scouts not only donated books of their own, but also made presentations to their classes, asking for donations.

A big part of collecting books is to sort the many varieties that are contributed. These 4th graders from Field School took on that job after the book drive held by the Girl Scout troops, which brought in almost 5000 books. The books are going to Malawi as part of the African Library Project (ALP).

IC Catholic Prep announces new Assistant Principal

IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) has announced that Mrs. Nikki Kanzia will join the staff as Assistant Principal, Director of Admissions and Student Life.

Since 2014, Kanzia has served as the Principal at St. Scholastica Parish School in Woodridge, focusing on curriculum, recruitment, marketing, advancement and fundraising. In addition, she has held the Nikki Kanzia role of Secretary for the Diocese of Joliet’s Principal Council.

“It is an honor to be able to join the dynamic administrative team and the tradition of excellence that is IC Catholic Prep,” said Kanzia. “In many ways, this opportunity is a homecoming for me as the seeds of my faith, family and community were planted in Elmhurst and at Immaculate Conception Parish. I am very much looking forward to giving back to the community in which I was raised with a desire to inspire our students to reach their greatest potential while growing in their faith”.

Three from York finalists in Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards

The Illinois chapter of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (IHSMTA) The Jimmy Awards - serves as an annual national celebration of outstanding achievement in musical theater performance by high school students. IHSMTA categories include Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Overall Production.

From this spring’s York High School production of West Side Story, the following students are state finalists: Senior ​Erik Martenson as Tony, j​unior ​Carina Kanzler as Maria and ​senior ​Tatum Langley as Anita.​Erik will be attending Ithaca College and Tatum will study at Ball State University, both pursuing careers in theatre.​ In addition, York’s rendition of West Side Story is one of five finalists for IHSMTA Best Overall Production. Performing Arts instructor Rebecca Marianetti served as director.

The Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards selects 24 nominees (12 actors and 12 actresses) to compete for top honors in front of Chicago casting agents and theater professionals. Nominees will perform on stage at the Broadway Playhouse on June 5 and receive tickets to a Broadway In Chicago show.

From the 24 nominees, the Best Actor and Best Actress award recipients will receive an all-expense paid trip to New York City to participate in a performance enrichment program and represent the State of Illinois at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, on Broadway June 26th.

Silverado hosts benefit concert for Uganda

This Girl Scout from Field School checks out the collection box that people used to drop their donations. Then, the big job of sorting begins. Participating troops included First Grade troop #55124, Second Grade Troop 50361, Third Grade Troop 50548 and Fourth Grade Troop 50956. The books collected will be sent to Malawi as part of the African Library Project (ALP) to build / begin libraries.

On Saturday, June 10 from 12-4 p.m., the live band Summit will perform a benefit concert at Silverado Grill at 447 Spring Road. The concert will benefit the Mary Queen of Heaven Medical Center in Uganda.

Tickets are $10 donation at the door, $5 for food and beer & wine tickets.

The First Congregational United Church of Christ held an All Church Yard Sale and Green Garden Fair on Saturday, May 13. Beautiful weather supported shoppers who found items for their home and clothes for their closet, as well as organically grown vegetable and herb seedlings for their gardens.

Mother – daughter team open NEXT Yoga in Elmhurst

Lauren Duncan demonstrates aerial yoga, one of the Aerial fitness classes available at NEXT Yoga, a new studio that opened in January in downtown Elmhurst. The establishment is owned and operated by Duncan and her mother Debbie Russo. It is the second location for the pair.

Debbie Russo and her daughter Lauren Duncan are passionate about yoga.

“Yoga is for everybody,” said Russo. “Every person can benefit from practicing yoga: all ages, sizes and lifestyles benefit from its physical, mental and healing power.” Both Russo and Duncan credit their yoga practice for keeping their own serious health conditions at bay.

NEXT Yoga at 135 N. Addison Avenue in Elmhurst opened its doors in January. The first NEXT yoga studio opened three years ago in downtown Wheaton.

“We are excited to be in Elmhurst,” said Russo. “Our intention was to replicate the positive growth we have in

Wheaton with a great community of students, and Elmhurst has that same vibrant feel. The response has been overwhelming.”

Most NEXT Yoga classes are an hour in length and include Traditional Hot Yoga, where the studio temperature is 105 degrees, which Russo says is great for Type A personalities with its sequence of 26 consecutive poses.

Yoga Sculpt class combines use of free weights, cardio and yoga to high energy music. Also Senior Yoga class is a therapeutic yoga where there is a chair to sit on or hold on to.

“Senior Yoga is great for anyone who may be working through an injury or have chronic health issues,” she said. “We can modify postures for anyone’s physical abilities to receive the same benefit of each pose.”

Something new that is offered only in Elmhurst is Aerial Yoga and Aerial Fitness, where students can safely increase their strength and flexibility using the resistance from your own

body. Space is limited for these classes and early sign up is encouraged.

Every Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. all are welcome to join a free 30-minute meditation to calm your central nervous system and recharge.

“We encourage you to come as you are – even in your business suit,” says Russo.

Debbie Russo was born with Crohn’s disease, a digestive disorder. She instantly fell in love with the practice of yoga over a decade ago when she tried a yoga class and realized it provided relief from her illness.

Since then, she has been an avid yoga practitioner and instructor.

Lauren Duncan was born with scoliosis and wore a back brace for three years. While she was always athletic, she was faced with a decision whether or not to have surgery. She attended a hot yoga class and kept returning since it provided relief for her spine.

Now she no longer has serious back issues.

Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois announces restructuring plan Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois announced program closures and staff cuts that will help the organization to better meet its ongoing mission. As part of a thorough organizational review following several years of financial challenges and changing needs, they have made the difficult decision to restructure to ensure continued viability.

“Since assuming the position of CEO on January 1, I have focused on ensuring that we fulfill our mis-

sion while looking to plan for the long-term financial stability of the organization,” said LCFS President and CEO Mike Bertrand. “We engaged in a thorough analysis and have created a plan for a financial turnaround of LCFS.” In consultation with LCFS’ Board of Trustees and an independent advisor, LCFS developed plans to restructure its services and shore up resources to align the organization with future needs of children and families in the state.

The changing landscape of social services “The social services landscape is ever changing as have the needs and challenges of abused and neglected children and their families,” said LCFS Vice President and Chief Program Officer Beverly Jones.

“LCFS saw the need to refocus and strengthen our work while remaining true to our mission.”

Nine programs are closing and about 100 positions will be eliminated (25 percent of LCFS’ total

staff). Impacted programs and communities are listed below. While the timing to wind-down each program depends on several factors, including how to minimize client disruption and coordinate with various stakeholders, LCFS expects to complete the phase out by the end of June.

“This has been an agonizing decision, particularly due to the impact on our clients and their families, as well as our employees whose jobs were eliminated,” said Bertrand.

“We are refocusing our mission to what we as an agency are best at, which is serving traumatized children and their families as a child-welfare organization.”

York girls 3,200 relay team takes 12th in state Dukes girls soccer team wins regional title

The York girls track 3,200 relay team placed 12th in the state at the recent Class 3A meet held at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

York clocked in at 9:48.94 with senior Julie Biggins, junior Katherine Tomaska, sophomore Sarah May and freshman Emma Kern.

The Dukes were third in their preliminary heat of the 3,200 relay with a finals-advancing time of 9:35.72 with Biggins, Tomaska, freshman Lydia Hickey and May. Senior Jeanette Morley finished seventh in her preliminary round of the high jump with a leap of 5-1. Junior Molly Evans placed eighth in her preliminary flight of the triple jump with a mark of 33-11 3/4.

York boys track The York boys’ track team had a highly successful evening at the recent Class 3A Lake Park sectional.

The Dukes finished tied for second as a team with 84 points. Wheaton-Warrenville South won the sectional title with 92 points.

York’s 800 relay team qualified for this weekend’s state finals meet after finishing second with a qualifying time of 1:31.06.

Obi Nnam won the high jump sectional title with a mark of 6-4. Cal Widener is headed to state after finishing second in the shot put with a throw of 55-2 1/2.

Jackson Bode won the 3,200 sectional title with a time of 9:35.46.

Charlie Kern Jr. won the 800 sectional title in 1:56.57, edging a Wheaton North runner who clocked in at 1:57.00.

Kern Jr. also won the 1,600 sectional title in 4:26.54 — again in a competitive race. The second-place runner finished in 4:26.73.

Jonathan Tanner rounded out York’s list of state qualifiers. He took second in the 200 with a time of 22.39.

York girls soccer The York girls soccer team downed St. Francis 3-0 to win its own Class 3A

York regional title.

Maggie Bleyer had two goals for the Dukes, while Jenna Dvorak had one goal.

York headed to the Downers Grove North sectional this week where it played Downers Grove North in the sectional semifinals. If York won that match it will play for the sectional title Friday at 5 p.m. at Downers Grove North.

York baseball The York baseball team picked up a pair of wins recently to advance its overall record to 21-10.

The Dukes were 10-5 winners in a WSC crossover game against Hinsdale South. York scored seven runs in the first inning and had 10 hits in the game.

Andrew Deardurff was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Mike Bernal went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Joey Yaeger scored two runs and walked twice. Nick Lee had a hit and a run scored. Mike Pastuovic had two hits, a run scored and two RBI. Ryan Ross had a hit and a run scored. Joey Chiappetta had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Ian Steinorth had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Pastuovic doubled, Chiappetta tripled and Bernal hit a home run in the game.

Burke Corcoran was the winning pitcher. He went four innings and allowed one earned run. Charlie Pakenas pitched the final three innings and struck out three.

York also won 8-7 against Elk Grove in eight innings non-conference play. The Dukes led 3-1 after the first inning in the back-and-forth game.

Each team had 11 hits.

The Timothy Christian girls track team had nine girls compete in the recent Class 1A state finals meet in Charleston at Eastern Illinois University.

It’s the largest contingent of athletes the Trojans have had at state in six years.

Timothy senior Olivia Hoekstra took sixth in the state in the 400 with a time of 59.13. She ran 59.61 in the preliminary heat to earn a spot in the finals.

Timothy’s 3,200 relay team finished in sixth place in its preliminary heat with a time of 10:45.87. That team included Elise Terpstra, Valerie Hoekstra, Jill Forgac and Rachel Stoll.

Timothy’s 800 relay competed in the third heat in the preliminaries.

That group included Zoe Stanton, Priscilla Nartey, Gabi Silvia and Alyse Schnurr.

Timothy’s 1,600 relay was seventh in its preliminary heat with a time of 4:26.63 with Olivia Hoekstra, Valerie Hoekstra, Forgac and Stoll.

Schnurr was eighth in her preliminary heat of the 100 high hurdles with a time of 17.98. Terpstra was 10th in her preliminary heat of the 800 with a time of 2:36.85.

The Trojans pounded out 13 hits and led 16-0 after two innings thanks to seven runs in the first inning and nine more in the second inning.

Nick Huisman had two hits and four RBI. Ten Timothy players collected the 13 hits. Jonny Strube also had four RBI. Brian Schiff, Jimmy Allen and Huisman each had two hits.

Schiff, Huisman and Strube each had a double, while Allen and Josh Anderson each had a triple.

Jakob Loerop was the winning pitcher. He went four innings and allowed two hits, while striking out four.

Timothy’s regional title game at home against St. Joseph was postponed due to rain. That game was scheduled to be made up this past Monday. If Timothy won that game, it advanced to the Class 2A IC Catholic Prep sectional in Elmhurst at Plunkett Athletic Complex against F.W. Parker from Chicago.

Gelsomino was the winning pitcher in relief. He went the final four innings and allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out seven against no walks.

York was scheduled to play at Naperville Central in a non-conference game earlier this week prior to facing Niles North today in Class 4A regional semifinal action. If York defeats Niles North it will play for the regional title Saturday at Niles North.

York softball The York softball team went 1-2 during a recent three-game stretch against Hinsdale Central, Downers Grove North and Glenbard West.

In a 12-10 loss in 10 innings to Hinsdale Central in West Suburban Conference Silver Division action, Katherine Karnatz had a hit, two RBI and three runs scored. Jane Moran had two hits. Kyra Kroll went 3-for-6 with a run scored and six RBI. Mia Tran had two hits. Izzy Smith also had two hits, as did Lauren Wojcik (2 RBI, 1 run scored) and Sydney Fuglsang (2 runs scored).

Tran had two doubles, while Smith and Kroll each had one double. Kroll, Wojcik and Karnatz each hit a home

run. Fuglsang stole two bases.

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team wins sectional title

Langan breaks school single-season goal-scoring record

The IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team put itself one win away from history.

The Knights scored a recent 2-1 win over Chicago DePaul College Prep to win the Class 1A IC Catholic Prep sectional title at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

The win moved the Knights to 20-5 overall and put them in a Class 1A supersectional game earlier this week against Chicago University High. If IC Catholic Prep won that game it will play for the first time in program history in the state semifinals at North Central College in Naperville on Friday.

The Knights also have won nine games in a row and 14 of their last 16.

“It was the battle of halves,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Tom Schergen.

IC Catholic Prep trailed 1-0 heading into halftime as the result of an own goal.

DePaul led 1-0 until 14 minutes remained in regulation. That’s when Olivia Hurt scored off a Tessa Langan corner kick to tie the game.

Bella Leslie then put the game-winner home with eight minutes left off another Langan corner kick.

“What we did well is play with

heart,” said Schergen. “In terms of games we played before that, we played team soccer, but when we got pushed a little, they all came together and played with heart and put it all out on the field. That was the difference.”

The Knights reached the final by scoring a 6-3 win over Francis W. Parker out of Chicago in the sectional semifinals.

Langan scored four goals in the game and set a new IC Catholic Prep single-season goal-scoring mark with 31. The previous record of 28 was held

by Natalie D’Agostino.

Hurt and Grace Fuller each added a goal and Hurt had two assists in the game.

The 20 wins in a season also established a new program record. The previous season high was 17 wins.

“The girls are doing well,” said Schergen. “They are peaking at the right time and doing things well as a team. They are at the point where they have the opportunity to do something that no other girls’ soccer team at IC Catholic Prep has done (go downstate). They have history in front of them. If they come out and play well (earlier this week against University), they will set another school benchmark.”

Schergen said the major key to the string of 14 wins in 16 games has been the players’ increasing familiarity with each other.

“The difference between early on in the season is I don’t think we knew how to play together,” he said. “We had a lot of individual play and individual talent. Now, we’ve figured out how to use teammates’ strengths.

We’ve played well as a team.”

Schergen noted DePaul held a decided shots-on-goal edge in the sectional final.

“I think they outshot us 25-4 or something like that,” he said. “Their goalie was on fire, saving everything.

A lot of teams could have gotten down and packed it in. Our girls kept fighting and kept getting after it. It’s a testament to how much heart they have. They found a way to win even with the deck stacked against them.”

Schergen also lauded the leadership abilities of senior captains Langan, Tess Reardon, Liz Maloney and Kaitlyn Grady.

“The four senior captains have been unbelievable,” he said. “They got the whole team to buy in. It’s been an unbelievable season. We’re doing the little things that make a difference. These girls never cease to amaze me.”

The IC Catholic Prep girls track team was plenty busy at the recent Class 1A state finals meet held at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

IC Catholic Prep’s 400 relay team was fourth in its preliminary heat with a time of 51.49. That team included Jaida Smith, Nailah Landon, Olivia Slavin and Kiersten King—all underclassmen.

The Knights’ 800 relay team took eighth in their preliminary heat with a time of 1:53.99 with Smith Slavin, freshman Hannah Johnson and King.

Neither relay qualified for the finals.

Smith was sixth in her preliminary heat of the long jump with a mark of 15-11 3/4. Landon and Mia Valenzuela both registered no height in the preliminary flights of the high jump.

Freshman Gabi Zanoni was ninth in her preliminary flight of the shot put at 31-1. Smith was ninth in her preliminary flight of the triple jump at 33-10 1/4.

King was sixth in her preliminary heat of the 200 with a time of 27.02.

IC Catholic Prep boys track The IC Catholic Prep boys track team placed second at the recent Class 1A sectional at Seneca. The Knights ended with 92 points. Seneca won the sectional title with 112 points.

Knights standout Jordan Rowell qualified for state in three individual events. Rowell won the long jump sectional title with a mark of 22-6.

11.27 and took second in the 400 with a state-qualifying time of 52.03.

IC Catholic Prep won the 400 relay sectional title in 45.16. The Knights also won the 800 relay title with a time of 1:35.53.

The Knights’ other state qualifier is junior Dan McCann, who won the shot-put sectional title with a throw of 39-3.

IC Catholic Prep will compete in the Class 1A state finals meet in Charleston at Eastern Illinois University this weekend.

IC Catholic Prep baseball The IC Catholic Prep baseball team had its Class 2A regional title game at Westmont against the host school postponed by rain last weekend. The Knights were scheduled to play that game this past Monday at Westmont.

If the Knights won that game, they advanced to the Class 2A IC Catholic Prep sectional at home at Plunkett Athletic Complex.

The Knights reached the title game after scoring a 6-2 win over Lisle in the semifinals. IC Catholic Prep jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and led 6-0 after four innings.

IC Catholic Prep had four hits in the game. Griffen Eichhorn had a home run, two walks, a run scored and two RBI. John Hoffman had a double and two RBI, while Matt Sutton had a hit, a run scored and a walk.

Brendan Russ was the winning pitcher. He went 5 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and one earned run. CJ West pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and earned the save.

The news of late has been quite good for the Timothy Christian boys tennis team.

The Trojans recently took second at their own Class 1A Timothy Christian sectional with 12 points.

Montini won the sectional title with 15 points.

The Timothy doubles team of Nathan Daniels and Trevor Hoogendorn qualified for this weekend’s Class 1A state tennis finals after winning the doubles sectional title.

Daniels and Hoogendorn won their first match 6-0, 6-0 and then won 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in their second match before winning 6-3, 7-5 over Montini in the sectional title match.

The Trojans finished the regular season 13-6-1 overall and went a perfect 4-0 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division action. At the conference tournament, Timothy edged Illiana Christian 22-21 for first place, giving the Trojans the overall conference title.

It was Timothy’s third conference title in a row and fourth in the last six years.

Daniels and Hoogendorn won the conference No. 1 doubles title.

Zach Huerta and Austin Hoogendorn won the No. 2 doubles conference title, while James Shervheim and Luke DeVries won the No. 3 doubles title. Jack Rhiner took second at No. 2 singles.

Prior to the sectional, Daniels and Hoogendorn were 12-0 together and earned the No. 1 sectional seed. Joel Daniels and Huerta were 7-0 at No. 2 doubles and earned the No. 5 seed at the sectional. DeVries was 20-4 at second and third doubles.

“We have had a steady improvement over the last three weeks,” said Timothy coach Keith Mills late last week. Doubles teams are getting to the net more frequently and I have found the right doubles combinations.”

Timothy also won the Fenton Bison Invitational for a second year in a row.

“That was a big surprise,” said Mills. “We topped Glenbard South, Fenwick and Stagg and swept all three doubles events.”

Mills has been impressed with how his players have

reacted to lineup adjustments throughout the year.

“This year I realized I needed to adjust the lineup more often than in prior years,” he said. “Players have been going from singles to doubles in almost every match. This has kept everyone sharp, in my opinion, and I then found the right lineup for each opponent.

We did not have a dominating first singles player this season so two-to-three boys have stepped into that role.

The overall level of the top eight players has increased and is very even from the third to eighth positions. As a coach, that’s a good problem to have.”

Nathan Daniels returned the lineup mid-season after coming back from an ACL injury suffered during the soccer season.

“He is back to top form already,” said Mills of Daniels. “He is playing doubles only, but is easily one of the best doubles players in the state.”

DeVries has made major strides this season. “Luke probably is the most improved from the first day to the end of the season,” said Mills. “He’s a reliable doubles player who has been unbeatable at third doubles through the last three weeks. He’s 20-4 at second and third doubles.”

Austin Hoogendorn had a 15-5 record prior to the sectional. “Austin has been a solid surprise performer for us,” said Mills.

Timothy won seven dual meets to end the season, as well as tournament titles at Argo, Fenton and the MSC Red tournament.

“The weather has been an obstacle to get consistent play,” said Mills. “We seemed to get our act together in late April. Meshing as a team took some time.

Playing with different partners, supporting teammates and overall attitudes changed as we progressed. In summary, we went from a rocky start to a great finish.

My biggest success as a coach is having 27 boys out for tennis at a school where we have 175 boys total.

Our team is bigger than many schools. Many beginners in our program progressed in 10 weeks.”

Timothy’s JV team also won the conference title.

Mills noted the team only graduates five players (3 varsity starters).

“We will likely return 22 boys,” he said. “We have no USTA tourney players on the roster, yet we continue to have successful seasons.”

The York girls water polo team had plenty to celebrate this season.

The Dukes posted a 22-7-1 overall record and went 4-1 in West Suburban Conference play, losing in the conference tournament final to Lyons Township.

York also advanced to the sectional championship at Fenwick where it lost to the hosts and defending state champions by a 12-6 count.

At the sectional, Sarah Lewand and Sydney Hutchinson were selected to the all-sectional first team, while Moleigh Waldherr and Maria Rantis earned all-sectional second-team accolades.

Lewand, the team’s senior goalie, made 240 saves. York coach Mark Giuliani expects Lewand to earn an all-state first-team designation when those awards were announced earlier this week.

“Sarah was phenomenal as a threeyear varsity starter,” said Giuliani.

Hutchinson, a junior 2-meter defense and hole set, led the team with 112 goals and 50 assists. Waldherr, a freshman

driver-hole set, had 84 goals and 35 assists, while senior driver and captain Rantis had 76 goals and 42 assists.

York won its sectional semifinal by a 5-4 count against Oak Park-River Forest. “We played as a team,” the coach said. “Our girls fought hard to come back in the semifinal game against OPRF and we ended up winning. We also beat them a week before in the semifinals of the conference tournament, 5-4 and again at the beginning of the season (6-4). The girls kept playing and relied on communication and leadership to hang in that game and come back to make it to the championship game.”

Giuliani also was pleased with the execution in the sectional final against Fenwick. “Against Fenwick we played lockdown defense and executed on our outside shooting,” he said. “Fenwick is one of the best teams in the state and our girls made it a competitive game.

They realized we also are one of the best teams in the state. Getting to the sectional final means the program is growing. We are creating higher expectations. The expectation is to make

it to the sectional final and win. We are right there. We need to keep growing and get to that next tier.”

The coach saw improvements throughout the pool this season. “Our offense and defense improved immensely,” he said. “The girls took a lot of initiative and responsibility to learn the system and put in the individual work to make sure they were ready. I am lucky to coach such a great, hard-working and competitive group of girls.”

Lewand, Amalia Siavelis and Rantis were the team’s three captains this season. “They showed great leadership and skill all season,” said Giuliani. “I also was great to have younger classmen such as Sydney Hutchinson, Marissa Logan, Maddie Fitzpatrick and Moleigh Waldherr step up. We will have a good team next year.”

Giuliani said leadership, personality and hard work were three traits that stood out to him this season.

“It was one of the best seasons York water polo has had in my five years coaching,” he said. “The girls worked hard and improved immensely.”

The Timothy Christian girls soccer team saw its season conclude after a 1-0 loss in penalty kicks to Holy Trinity in a Class 1A regional title game. Holy Trinity won the penalty phase 2-1.

Timothy finished the year 5-14-1 overall and 2-3 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

Maddie Schaafsma and Heather Kocol were named to the all-MSC Red Division team. Schaafsma finished the season with 21 goals to go with six assists.

Trojans coach Jon Hamelinck said improvement in the middle of the field helped his team as the season wore on.

“Possession in the middle,” he

said. “The girls did a much better job staying connected in the middle and building from the back. For too long this season, we were one-dimensional in our attack and it left girls without support and ultimately meant we played a lot of defense. We had strong possession numbers against some pretty good teams, which was a huge positive for us.”

Timothy also benefitted from the play of goalie Shayna Smits. “Shayna did a wonderful job for us this year,” said Hamelinck. “She turned a corner from last year and provided stability. She was a valuable member of our team this season. Her family is moving to Kansas so we will miss her next year.”

Hamelinck also cited strong recent play from Abby Carstensen. “Abby is starting to find her stride,” he said. “Being new to the school, the

Numerous school records broken at meet

The Timothy Christian middle-school boys track team recently won the conference title with a strong showing at the league meet.

Timothy finished first in the boys divisions. The girls team took third out of seven schools.

“Both teams had outstanding performances,” said Timothy Christian coach Bill Ridder. “The athletes ran and jumped well with many getting their personal best at the meet.”

The boys 800 relay team of Liam Gescey, Mike Vogt, Jackson Day and Josh Pae beat the previous Timothy middle school record by two seconds with a time of 1:47.96.

Josh Bode broke the school record in the 1,600 run with a time of 5:17.

Pae broke the Timothy record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.19.

In the girls 1,600 relay, Rachel Smith, Cailey Schuurmann, Morgan Vandenbrook and Caroline Kuenzi also broke the middleschool record with a time of 5:13.

“All of the athletes performed exceptionally well,” said Ridder.

“We are so proud of them.”

The York girls lacrosse team kicked off the postseason with a pair of victories by a combined score of 34-4.

The Dukes were 18-0 winners against Minooka and then downed the Lincoln-Way co-op team 16-4 to advance to the sectional championship game earlier this week on the road at Naperville North.

Naperville North is the No. 8 seed, while York is the 9th seed.

Zoe Lawless, Ellie Grubbs and Emily Siegenthaler led the scoring charge against Minooka.

“We were good on transitions against Minooka,” said York coach Ryan Walz. “We were moving the ball up field quickly. Our shooting percentage has become a lot better.
