Man found in possession of stolen vehicle in Elmhurst gets seven years DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that one of three men accused of possessing a stolen vehicle in Elmhurst has been sentenced to seven Tyrone Wilson years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Tyrone Wilson, 19, of 5721 S. Chappel, Chicago, appeared in court last week where he entered a blind plea of guilty to one count of Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, a Class 2 Felony in front of Judge John Kinsella, who handed down the sentence.

The cases against Wilson’s co-defendants, Deonte Daniel, 21, of 6954 S. Clyde, Chicago, and Deanthony Webb, 24, of 6721 S. Paxton, Chicago, are still pending.

On Monday, Nov. 27, 2017, at approximately 5 a.m., Elmhurst Police responded to a call of a burglary in progress. Upon their arrival, officers observed two vehicles fleeing the area.

In their attempt to flee, the driver of one of the vehicles, a Toyota, allegedly hit the second vehicle, a Dodge, also allegedly attempting to flee. The Toyota then allegedly crashed into a home.

Following the crashes, four men allegedly attempted to flee the two vehicles on foot. Daniel was apprehended a short time later in a nearby garage.

Webb and Wilson were found walking on a nearby street and taken into custody. Following an investigation led by the Elmhurst Police Department, it is alleged that on November 27, the men burglarized three vehicles on Gladys and Evergreen Streets in Elmhurst. It is further alleged that the Dodge vehicle in the men’s possession was stolen the previous night out of Villa Park.

“This afternoon, Mr. Wilson admitted to his role in the incident on November 27, 2017,” Berlin said. “Today’s sentencing sends the message that if you commit this type of brazen crime in DuPage County you will be caught, charged and if found guilty, spend a significant amount of time behind bars. I would like to thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their fine police work apprehending the men accused in this case.”

Webb’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 4, 2018, and Daniel’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 26, 2018. The cases against both men are in front of Judge Kinsella.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt.

Despite a drizzly day, the Spring Road Pet Parade took place on Saturday, May 19 for the first time in about three years and was well-attended. The crowd included almost every kind of dog imaginable, including this tiny dog in his own little fire truck who completely stole the show.

York softball team wins conference title First WSC Silver crown in 15 years

The York softball team’s conference-championship drought is over.

The Dukes are West Suburban Conference Silver Division champions after going 11-1 in league play.

Oak Park-River Forest finished with two losses and Downers Grove North had three losses.

It’s the first softball conference title for the Dukes in 15 years.

“We’re doing pretty well,” said York coach Elizabeth Munn. “The team is looking pretty good with the playoffs starting here. We’ve taken it one step at a time and our pitching has been solid. This group has a chance and has the ability to do really well and potentially go downstate.

But it has to be one game at a time and we’re working toward that.”

York was 21-11 overall through late last week.

“We’re coming together as a team,” said Munn. “At the plate, girls are adjusting their at-bats. Our batting averages look really good. We are batting around .300 as a team.”

Katherine Karnatz and Kyra Kroll are the team-leaders in batting average.

York also has benefitted from the strong pitching of freshman Lauren Derkowski. “Lauren has been really great with her pitching,” said Munn.

“We’re looking forward to seeing what she can do in the postseason.

She’s looked strong.”

Through late last week, Derkowski sported a 1.80 ERA and had 159 strikeouts.

Munn said York’s defense also has helped. “We’re looking strong defensively,” she said. “We’re trying to work on the little things such as tightening up our bunt defense and executing. We’re also working on ad-

justing to the pitching we are seeing.

One day we might see pitching that is OK and then the next day we’re facing really great pitching. We need to keep working and make adjustments at the plate. The bats are there. It’s a matter of the girls making those adjustments. If they do that, it will get them far.”

Munn said her players have excelled in light of balancing busy endof-the-year schedules. “All aspects of our team are coming together, but the timing of this is key in getting past the regular season and moving into regional week,” she said. “The players are balancing AP testing, finals and the seniors have graduation.

There is a lot going on. Focus is crucial at this point.”

And now York turns its attention to this week’s Class 4A regionals.

“It’s an absolutely great group of kids,” she said. “They know it’s oneand-done at this point. They have the experience to do really great things.

It’s a matter of coming together and making the adjustments they need to.

I have no question in my mind if they do that, they can go far.”

In other recent action, York was a 12-2 non-conference winner against Naperville Central. The Dukes had 13 hits and scored seven runs in the second inning and led 9-0 after three.

Karnatz was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Jane Moran scored two runs.

Madison Collins was 3-for-3 with three RBI. Madeline Modica hit a three-run homer. Kroll was 2-for-2 with a run scored and four RBI. One of her hits was a home run. Derkowski was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Gina Westphal was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sophia Trajcevski scored two runs.

Mia Tran, Collins and Karnatz each had a double.

Derkowski was the winning pitcher. She allowed three hits and one earned run, while striking out 11 over five innings.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

1:16 a.m.

Isabelle M. Panozzo, 21, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, parking on the roadway and no insurance near Park and Prospect at around 2:53 a.m.

Matthew M. Roth, 35, of Downers Grove, was charged with DUI, failure to signal and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 11:57 p.m.

Assault, battery

May 16 Tristan Carter, 32, of Bellwood, was charged with battery at around 8:32 p.m. A victim told police he is a Lyft driver and reportedly gave Carter a ride. Upon exiting the vehicle, police said Carter began yelling at the victim and punched him in the face. .

May 13 Isaac A. Reeves, 25, of Elmhurst, was charged with battery in the 1-100 block of Elm Creek Drive at around 2:39 a.m. Police said officers responded for a fight in progress.

According to police, Reeves and the victim engaged in a fight where Reeves pushed the victim to the ground and punched him.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement, vandalism

May 11 Eric M. Deisbeck, 39, of Peru, Ill., was issued a citation for injuring city property near York and First at around 7:16 a.m.

May 9-May 10 A complainant in the 500 block of W. Lorraine told police that an unknown suspect(s) damaged their mailbox between the above dates by tearing off the door.

May 10 Shaquita M. Booker, 32, of Berkeley, was issued a citation for vandalism in the 300 block of W. Butterfield at around 8:53 p.m. Police said a victim related that a vendor shoved approximately 24 plastic glasses off of a table, breaking some of them as they hit the floor.

Booker admitted to deliberately knocking the glasses over, police said.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, dispute

May 16 A 27-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery violation of an order of protection, violation of bail bond and resisting arrest in the 100 block of S. Hale at around 3:42 p.m.

Police said a 26-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 800 block of N. York at around 8:04 p.m. Police said officers spoke to the victim who stated the suspect grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him as the victim attempted to leave the apartment. The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to the police station.

May 12 A complainant near Lake and York told police at around 1:33 p.m. that he pulled up next to a white Dodge Durango and observed a male driver punch a female passenger several times in the head. He then grabbed her and shoved her into the passenger door area. The complainant exited his vehicle to confront the driver and the vehicle drove off west bound Lake Street at a high rate of speed. The area was checked with no results. Further investigation is pending.

A 36-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 100 block of Linden at around 7:15 p.m. A victim told police that he and the suspect were

May 11 An officer responded to a call of a customer dispute in the 200 block of N. West at around 1:38 p.m. A complainant told police the subject arrived at the office requesting to speak with a specific doctor. He was told the doctor was not working today. The subject called approximately an hour later, requesting to speak with the doctor and threatened to sue her. The officer advised the subject to have no further contact with the employees.

May 17 Juan Lopez, 26, of Maywood, was charged with DUI, disobeying a traffic control device, driving while license suspended and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 3:24 a.m.

May 16 Brandi Pahl, 35, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and improper parking on a roadway near North and Indiana at around 1:24 a.m.

Police said Pahl was located asleep in her vehicle while in traffic at the above location and was found to be DUI. May 13 Thomas C. Bushka, 47, of Lombard, was charged with DUI, disobeying a traffic control device, speeding and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near York at Butterfield at around 2:17 a.m.

May 12 Police said that subsequent to a call of a subject sleeping on the ground in the 100 block of W. Third at around 10:11 a.m., Kevin J. Fetty, 18, of Elmhurst, was found to have consumed alcohol while under the legal age. He was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Angelica J. Velez, 30, of Addison, was charged with DUI, no valid driver’s license and no insurance, while Chad E. Rice, 27, of Chicago, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis and Latrell Friend, 26, of Chicago, was issued a citation for transportation of open alcohol subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 12:29 a.m.

Bernardino Villamil, 24, of Cicero, was charged with DUI, no driver’s license, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and I-290 at around 12:49 a.m.

May 11 Francis R. Adley, 53, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, no rear plate light and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Grand at around

May 15 Rafael Murguia, 31, of Bensenville, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in the 1000 block of N. York at around 5:25 p.m.

Retail theft was reported at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North at around 6:28 p.m.

Police said officers responded to the pharmacy for the report of a retail theft that had just occurred. The unknown suspect had taken liquor and was last seen westbound on North Avenue in a black truck. A check of the area yielded no results.

Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of Melrose at around 7:14 p.m. A victim told police that he found suspicious charges on his credit card and received a package addressed to his wife which they did not order. The victim reported the fraudulent activity to the credit card company and had their card cancelled.

May 13 Antonio Marks, 25, of Maywood, was charged with for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and no rear registration plate light subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Mitchell at around 8:50 p.m.

Ethan Silva, 20, of Georgetown, Ill., was charged with for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding, while Savannah Brooks, 20, also of Georgetown, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 11:40 p.m.

May 12 Earnest R. James, 18, and Jerryon J. Stevens, 18, both of Chicago, were issued citations for possession of cannabis in the 300 block of W. Lake at around 10:10 p.m.

May 11 Johnny Marquez, 20, of Alsip, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis and transportation of alcohol by a minor subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 11:46 p.m.

Cornelius Tubbs, 43, of Chiago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 7:49 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances

May 14 The victim, a leasing agent for an apartment complex in the area of Elm Creek Drive, was

showing a suspect an apartment at around 12:30 p.m. While showing the apartment, the suspect acted inappropriately. The suspect left the scene. The victim does not want to sign complaints. The suspect denied the incident and was served a trespass notice.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

May 16 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 7:57 a.m. The sales supervisor told police that a suspect removed three bottles of vodka and left the store without paying for the merchandise. Further investigation is pending.

May 15 Ali Zeaiter, 63, of Elmhurst, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:46 p.m. Police said that subsequent to the report of a retail theft at the store, officers were advised Zeaiter had attempted to take a pair of shoes and was last seen south bound on foot. Officers made contact with Zeaiter.

Attempted theft was reported in the 500 block of S. Sunnyside at around 10:19 a.m.

A complainant told police that her husband/ victim received a suspicious letter demanding payment. The letter instructed the victim to deposit the funds into a bitcoin account. The victim did not make the payment and is not out any money.

May 12-May 15 Theft was reported in the 400 block of W. Butterfield. A victim told police that an unknown suspect removed cash from her purse sometime between the above dates. The director of assisted living interviewed all staff members but has been unable to locate the missing money.

Nov. 1, 2017-May 15 Theft was reported at a business in the 600 block of W. Grand between the above dates.

A complainant told police approximately 12 company gas cards have been taken from unlocked work trucks since November of 2017.

Fraudulent charges were charged to the gas cards at different gas stations.

May 14 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 5:25 p.m. A victim told police that two suspects described as black males took baby formula and left without paying. The suspects left in a white Chevrolet HHR with Michigan license plate. The area was checked with no results.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 9:23 a.m. Police said a reporting officer responded to the location for the report of a retail theft that had occurred. The suspect left the scene prior to the officer’s arrival. Upon further investigation, it was found the suspect had committed an additional retail theft at the same location two days prior. The case is pending investigation.

May 12 Myrian Jefferson, 23 of Westmont, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 11:34 a.m. Police said Jefferson removed merchandise and left the store in a beige Chevy Malibu, was located and placed under arrest.

Park Board capsules Here’s what’s happening at the Elmhurst Park District

The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on May 14 at the district’s administrative office at 375 W. First Street. All seven board members attended the meeting.

Board elects officers The board held its annual meeting immediately before the regular meeting. The board elected its president and vice president during the brief annual meeting. Vince Spaeth, the board’s current president, was unanimously re-elected. All of the board’s six other members declined to be considered for the position. Kevin Graf, the board’s current vice president, was also re-elected unanimously. All of the board’s other members declined to be considered for the vice president position.

More discussion on registration software The regular meeting included an update regarding the park district’s registration software. The software, RecTrac from Vermont Systems, Inc. (VSI), ran at an unacceptably slow rate during registration for park district programs on Feb. 24. Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers told the board he still had significant concerns about the software and the vendor. Rogers said his faith in VSI’s

ability to meet the district’s needs is not increasing. The district’s next registration will take place on Aug. 4. Rogers noted that the Aug. 4 registration is a large registration for the district’s fall programs.

Rogers noted that using another registration software provider would be more expensive. If the district did choose another provider, Rogers said the district would likely pass the costs onto its customers as a transaction fee.

Funds approved to build connection to Salt Creek Greenway Trail Board members voted unanimously during the regular meeting to approve the compensation of $73,800 to Butterfield, LLC, for permanent and temporary easements to construct a connection of the Salt Creek Greenway Trail.

The construction project will complete a gap in the trail from Butterfield Road on the north to the existing trail south of Butterfield Road. The asphalt bike path will be located east of the parking lot at 360 W. Butterfield Road and parallel to the west side of Salt Creek. The new path will eliminate a hazardous situation that currently requires trail users to ride toward oncoming traffic on the shoulder of Brush Hill Road.

A permanent easement is needed for the improvement because it includes land owned by 360 Butterfield, LLC, which owns the office building at the southeast corner of Brush Hill and Butterfield Roads. The temporary easement will allow access to the land

during the construction process. According to the district, construction is expected to take place in the spring of 2019.

The district continues to negotiate with the Astoria Town Home Association, which owns property adjacent to the land owned by 360 Butterfield, LLC, for a temporary construction easement on about one-tenth of an acre of land to complete the bike path.

There will be no permanent impact to the Astoria Town Home Association once the path is completed.

First quarter finances discussed The board meeting also included a first quarter financial report. Rogers noted near the end of the report that while membership at Courts Plus is down about six percent in the last year, revenues at the facility have held steady. He noted a recent 10-percent fee increase at Courts Plus. Rogers said the district’s staff believes increased competition from new facilities in Elmhurst is largely responsible for the decline in membership at Courts Plus.

The board reviewed and discussed revisions to the manual during the meeting. One topic of discussion regarded the number of meetings a board member should be allowed to miss each year before the matter comes to the entire board’s attention and review.

The current limit is 12. Rogers noted that no board member has missed that many meetings in a year in the last

several years. The policy stated that an office can be declared vacant if a commissioner misses meetings for three consecutive calendar months or 12 regular or special meetings in any 12-month period.

The policy also stated that a board member could attend a meeting by teleconference or other electronic means no more than three times per fiscal year. Gavanes appointed to DuPage County Board

The DuPage County Board unanimously approved Chairman Dan Cronin’s appointment of Dino Gavanes of Itasca to serve on the Board, filling the vacant District 1 seat following the resignation of Paul Fichtner.

Chairman Dan Cronin said Gavanes brings a wide range of experience and skills to the position.

“Dino is very knowledgeable about many of the issues that face our County Board. With his experience in the private sector, along with his extensive resume of professional and community involvement, I have no doubt the residents of District One will be well-served by his representation,” Cronin said.

With more than 40 years of experience in the insurance industry, Gavanes is a principal with the Advisers Group Inc. He graduated

from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Engineering and received his M.B.A. from DePaul University.

Gavanes has held several leadership positions within the insurance industry including president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Illinois, and National Director from Illinois to the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (IIABA).

He also serves on the Board of Governors of the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research.

He serves on the Board of the Itasca Chamber of Commerce and the Itasca Police Pension Fund.

Gavanes will complete Fichtner’s term, which ends Nov. 30, 2018.

Army Colonel serves as Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshal The Grand Marshal for Elmhurst’s 100th Memorial Day Parade is Elmhurst resident Mark R. Mallon, a medal-winning Colonel in the United States Army Reserves who served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Growing up in Elmhurst since 1975, Col. Mallon began attending the City’s Memorial Day parades long before his military career took root.

“It is truly an honor for me,” stated Col. Mallon. “The Grand Marshal is clearly a position of importance and honor, and over the years I have watched so many that have accomplished so much locally as well as nationally and internationally selected for this position.

“I look forward to the Centennial Memorial Day Parade for the great City of Elmhurst,” Col. Mallon stated.

Col. Mallon, whose military career began with ROTC training in 1989, is a Psychological Operations (PSYOP) Officer working with in the Unites States Special Operation Command (or USSOCOM). Since 2015, he has been an Instructor in the USSOCOM’s Joint Special Op-

A Bronze Star Medal recipient, Col. Mallon served two tours of duty in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom (2004 and 2005-06) and one tour in Afghanistan furing Operation Enduring Freedom (2012-13).

During his first tour in Iraq, Col. Mallon served as Product Development Detachment Commander with the 324th Tactical PSYOP Company based in Tikrit.

On his second Iraq tour, Col. Mallon served as Military Information Support Team (MIST) Chief with the 14th PSYOP Battalion based in Bagdad.

Col. Mallon served in Afghanistan as Deputy Commander if the Combined Joint Psychological Operations Task Force (CJPOTF) based in Kabul.

“Operation Iraqi Freedom was an amazing opportunity,” said Col. Mallon. “My first tour was working in Tikrit, which was the hometown of Saddam (Hussein). Most people there were very appreciative of the support given by coalition forces.

They were not concerned that their neighbors were Sunni or Shia; they just wanted safety for their families,

a job and for their children to go to school.

“On my second tour, I was at the U.S. Embassy and worked with many senior members of the government, as well as Baghdad Police. It was a great experience with a different and much higher view,” Col. Mallon continued.

“Operation Enduring Freedom was a complete change from previous deployments,” stated Col. Mallon. “Working on a NATO base, my Task Force alone was made up of soldiers from 30 different countries. The general population that we worked with there was young and had no previous knowledge of how a functioning government should work or how a legitimate police and military force operates, as they had never worked with one in their lifetime until after 9-11. Most had never traveled more than 50 miles from their home.”

His decorations and badges include Defense Meritorious Serve Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (with Sil-

His military school training includes Airborne School, Military Intelligence Office Basic and Advance courses, Psychological Operations Officer and Civil Affairs Qualification courses, U.S. Army Combined Arms Staff Services Staff School (CAS^3), U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) Intermediate Level Education and U.S. Army CGSC Advanced Operations and Warfighting Course.

Col. Mallon is a graduate of IC Catholic Prep in Elmhurst and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science at Illinois State University in Bloomington.

Col. Mallon works for COUNTRY Financial Insurance Company as a Financial Advisor with an office in Glen Ellyn.

City to celebrate 100th Memorial Day Parade on May 28 President Lincoln to Led by Grand Marshal Mark R. Mallon, a medal-winning Colonel in the United States Army Reserves, more than 90 entries will march in Elmhurst’s 100th Annual Memorial Day Parade through downtown Elmhurst on Monday, May 28, stepping off at 9:30 a.m.

The 2018 Parade is presented by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Elmhurst American Legion T.H.B. Post 187, Veterans of Foreign Wars Villa Park Post 2801, the City of Elmhurst and Elmhurst Park District.

The Elmhurst Chamber is also celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2018 and American Legion T.H.B. Post 187 will mark its Centennial in 2019.

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst will again serve as Parade Marshals, assisted by Veterans from Elmhurst College, and also will march carrying their giant U.S. flag.

Ralph P. Pechanio, Chairman of the Elmhurst Veterans Memorial Commission and a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst, and John R. Quigley, President & CEO of the Elmhurst Chamber, are the Parade Co-Chairs, since 1997 and 2000, respectively.

“Our parade is a tribute to all those men and women who have so bravely put their lives on the line to defend individual freedoms here in this greatest of nations and around the world,” said Quigley. “And reaching a milestone of 100 years speaks volume about our community’s commitment to ‘Always Remember’ those in uniform.”

In recognition of York Community High School’s 100th Anniversary, the Marching Dukes band will lead this year’s parade, along with the York High School Alumni Association (YHSAA) contingent, followed then by the Elmhurst Chamber.

This year’s entries include seven color guards, retired military officers from the United States Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, members of American Legion Post 187 and VFW Post 2801, costumed Civil War re-enactors and military vehicles.

The lead color guard will feature members of the Elmhurst Police and Fire Departments.

The parade also will feature vehicles representing six fire departments (Elmhurst, Northlake, Oakbrook Terrace, Oak Brook, Villa Park and York Center District), 14 scouting groups, and seven musical entries, along with elected leaders at the federal, state and municipal levels.

A total of nine cub scout packs, four boy scout troops and one combined troop of girl scouts will carry commemorative war banners.

Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley and members of the Elmhurst City Council will head a contingent of elected leaders that includes U.S. Representative Mike Quigley.

In addition to York’s Marching Dukes, the Elmhurst Middle Schools combined marching band will represent Elm-

hurst Community Unit School District 205.

Musical and/or drill groups are the Antioch Brass Quintet, Carver Military Academy Drill Team and Drum Corps, Chicago Highlanders Pipes and Drums, Chicago Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Patton Academy (Farragut Career Academy) JROTC Drill and Drums Team.

The parade will step off at 9:30 a.m. from York Road and Third Street, and concludes with a Military Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Wilder Park.

Starting from Third Street, the parade will head south on York Street to Second Street, veer east along Robert Palmer Drive through the underpass and west back to York Street, south on York Street to Church Street, west on Church Street to Prospect Avenue and north on Prospect Avenue past the Veterans Memorial.

Post-Parade Memorial The 26th Annual Post-Parade Military Ceremony at the Elmhurst Veterans Memorial will feature inspirational speeches by Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley and others, the laying of wreaths by military personnel and civilians, and a traditional Three-Round Volley.

Patriotic music will be performed by the Antioch Brass Quintet and bagpiper Brian Costello of the Shannon Rovers, and sung by the Men of Spirito!.

The names of Elmhurst area veterans who passed away since Veterans Day 2017 will be read aloud in remembrance, from the lists provided by Ahlgrim Funeral Home, Gibbons Funeral Home and Pedersen-Ryberg Mortuary.

American Legion Post 187, with assistance from Elmhurst College’s Lamda Chi Alpha fraternity members, has placed four rows of 65 white crosses adjacent to the Veterans Memorial with the names of deceased Elmhurst veterans who served during World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam, Persian Gulf War, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

For the eighth year in row, an Always Remember sign commemorating the names of the deceased Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshals has been erected adjacent to the crosses.

The sign was manufactured by Vital Signs USA, with a donation by Don Meyers.

The Veterans Memorial was dedicated in 1993 through the efforts of former VFW Post 2048, American Legion Post 187 and Ralph Pechanio, 1992 President (now Chairman) of the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Their fund-raising campaign generated more than $100,000 to build the memorial.

President Lincoln stated that our great nation was born in 1776 when “conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal” and that “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth,” assuring the future of democracy in the world.

His letter to Mrs. Bixby, who lost five sons on the Union side during the Civil War, includes the following: “I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom.”

‘True Patriots Care’ to stage 1,600 U.S. flags in Wilder Park In conjunction with Elmhurst’s 100th Memorial Day Parade, True Patriots Care will stage a patriotic display of more than 1,600 American flags—honoring Vietnam War service members who were prisoners of war (POW) and missing in action (MIA)—throughout Wilder Park from Thursday p.m. through Tuesday a.m., May 24-29.

“Each of the flags will have the name of the soldier and short bio,” said Jerry Christopherson, President of True Patriots Care, U.S. Army veteran and York Community High School’s Administrative Director – Custodial Manager.

True Patriots Care displayed 300 flags on the lawn east of the Wilder Mansion over Memorial Day weekend in 2017 and annually does a Flags of Honor display at the entrance to Elmhurst’s York Community High School for Veterans Day honoring 101 alums killed in

action. Each flag had the name and war in which each soldier died in service for our country.

The Wilder Park display will be lit through each of the nights using whisper-quiet portable lighting provided by Elmhurst College.

Nybo-negotiated gun dealer safety measure passes Senate In an effort to reduce gun trafficking stemming from Illinois gun dealers, State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) negotiated several significant revisions to a Gun Dealer Safety measure, which passed the Senate on May 16—one day after a bipartisan group of legislators, including Nybo, announced their support.

“We have refocused the gun dealer safety legislation to address our most important priorities—requiring gun dealers to follow common-sense safety practices and cracking down on businesses that are enabling or

engaging in gun trafficking,” he said.

“And we have done so without creating too much of a burden for local businesses.”

The original gun dealer licensing concerned many legislators due to the amount of time, money and resources it would require for businesses to apply for a license and comply with the new regulations—as well as the strain it would place on the State to fulfill all of its new responsibilities.

Local veteran shares thoughts on Memorial Day What Memorial Day means to me: My name is Robert Fonzino, and I served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969. My focus on this, and every Memorial Day derives from my tour of duty in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam from July 1968 to June 1969. During that time I served as 1st platoon leader, B Company, 4th Infantry Division, 2/8 Mechanized Infantry.

For me, Memorial Day is not to honor all veterans. It is a day of reflection. A day to honor and remember those who gave their lives while serving in the armed forces of the United States of America during wartime. They are a group of special people, who answered when our country called.

During the year I served in Viet Nam, nearly 14,000 men and women lost their lives. Those people are not just numbers. They are all sons and daughters. Some, husbands and wives. Some, brothers and sisters.

Some, fathers and mothers. Some, uncles and aunts. Some, friends or acquaintances. Some, classmates and neighbors.

Some of those men who died, I knew well. They were my friends, most very close friends. I remember

them as people who were part of my life, even for just a short, important time. I remember their pranks. I remember their smiles. I remember their tears. I remember their pain. I remember their anger. I remember their heartache. I remember the first day they arrived to my unit. I remember their reactions to combat. I remember their valor. I remember the last moments of their lives. I remember writing to their loved ones back home and sharing their families’ pain along with my own. For me, that is what I remember. I suppose it is the burden of survival I live with.

As generations pass, the memory of those individuals who died will fade, and they will become just numbers, or names on a wall -- all casualties of a tumultuous time of our history. That is why it is so important to remember them now as the people they were -- as the people who touched our lives in some small or grand way.

Perhaps this Memorial Day we can all take a few moments to remember one, or two, or many of these souls that we knew. Give them a few thoughts on this special day, dedicated to them.

York announces new staff Emily Bowman, Alyssa Ortiz named head coach of cheer, competitive dance School District 205 has recently announced that team conditioning,​​cleaning and

two head coach positions have been filled.

Emily Bowman has been named the new cheerleading coach at York High School, Alyssa Ortiz ​will serve as York’s new ​head coach of the ​ Varsity Competitive Dance ​team.

More about Emily Bowman Bowman is a proud York alumna and former varsity captain. She has more than 10 years of coaching experience, including four years with York, and has coached all ages and skill levels.

She was on the coaching staff during integral seasons for the York program, including the first Emily Bowman IHSA State appearance in York history, as well as the program’s most successful competitive season to date: placing 4th at the IHSA State Finals in the Coed Division. Emily is excited to lead the cheer program toward even greater success as one of the top programs in the state, while supporting other York sports and overall school spirit.

Try-outs for the fall season will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, May 30 and May 31 from 4:30-8:30 p.m. in York’s Black Box Theatre.

Try-outs are open to all 9-12 grade students for the 2018-19 school year. B​orn in Elmhurst, Alyssa​​ began dancing at the age of three at Gotta Dance Studio, in Addison. After finishing her years at Gotta Dance, she continued dancing and competing with Powerhouse Dance Company in Addison. There Alyssa studied Alyssa Ortiz under a variety of instructors.

When Alyssa reached her high school years, she earned a position on the York High School Varsity Cheer team​,​​that performed at football and basketball games ​which simultaneously competed through IHSA (Illinois High School Association).

After her year on ​the ​cheerleading​squad​, Alyssa became a member of the Varsity Pom team, where she also performed at football and basketball games. During this time, ​she competed at Team Dance Illinois competitions in Kick, Pom and Hip Hop. While ​a member of​poms, she was also part of the Creative Team, which choreographed the dances they performed. ​In her senior year​,​Alyssa was asked by ​​ Universal Dance Association (​UDA) to be part of their staff and travel while teaching various high school teams.

After ​h​igh ​s​chool​,​ Alyssa continued her education at Elmhurst College, where she received her degree in Criminal Justice, w ​ ith a Dance minor in 2014. There she studied under the direction of Amy Lynn McDonald in ​t​ap, ​j​azz, ​b​allet, ​m​ odern and even taking dance appreciation and ​c​ horeography classes. While in college, Alyssa was a member of the poms team, perform​ing​at both basketball and football games. She was selected as co-captain her second year on the team. ​According to Rob Wagner, York’s Assistant Principal for Athletics, ​Alyssa ​has great plans to ensure that ​Dukes’ dynamic team continues to grow and defend the 3A state title.

Students are tested on their written, oral and listening comprehension and are evaluated by the American Association of Teachers of French. History Museum announces winners of poster contest Annual Ruth Strand contest brings out talent of local students

The Elmhurst History Museum has announced the winners of the annual Ruth Strand poster contest. A ceremony event is scheduled at the Museum on Wednesday, May 23 to salute all the award-recipients.

Children have their own perspective on history, and their thoughtful, colorful—and often humorous—takes on the subject were well-documented in the 350 entries received for the 2018 Ruth Strand Poster Contest.

Sponsored by the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation and the Elmhurst History Museum, the annual contest challenges second grade students to depict and describe a scene from Elmhurst history. The contest honors Ruth Strand, the long-time director of the Elmhurst Public Library and a founding member of what is now the Elmhurst History Museum. The Elmhurst Heritage Foundation’s mission is to stimulate broad-based support for local history, the Elmhurst History Museum, and the Churchville Schoolhouse through advocacy, education, and fundraising.

The first place winner is Daniella Miulli at Hawthorne School. Second place was awarded to Gabby Cantrell from IC grade school. Gavin Stutts from Field School and Lucy Beal at Hawthorne tied for 3rd place.

Honorable Mention was awarded to the following students: Ariana Heckenbach, Fischer School; Clare O’Shaughnessy, Visitation; Hanna George, Lincoln; John Teevens, Emerson; Julia Ciszek, Jackson; Katie Knable, ICGS; Olivia Auvil, Edison; Renata Torres, Field; Samantha Drolett, Jefferson; and Sophie Hummel, Hawthorne.

At the reception on May 23, students will receive gift bags from the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, and schools with ten or more participants receive a $100 grant to support their school’s library. The winning entries may be viewed at City Hall after June 5. In addition, the winners will march alongside the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation in the Elmhurst Memorial Day parade on May 28 and also be recognized at the Elmhurst City Council meeting on June 4.

The Elmhurst Heritage Foundation congratulates and thanks all of the 2018 Ruth Strand Poster Contest participants and their teachers for sharing their beautiful posters on Elmhurst history with the community.

This is the first-place winning poster in the Elmhurst History Museum’s Ruth Strand poster contest. This poster was created by Daniella Miulli, a student at Hawthorne. It reads, “In 1868, Seth Wadhams purchased this home and called it “White Birch.” Today it is called Wilder Mansion, owned by the Elmhurst Park District since 1921. It was Elmhurst’s library.”

This poster took second place in the History Museum’s annual Ruth Strand poster contest. It was made by Gabby Cantrell, who is a student at IC Grade School. It reads as follows: “The Elmhurst Historical Museum had 10,000 photographs. The museum is like the memory of Elmhurst.”

Gavin Stutts from Field School created this poster which tied for 3rd place in the Ruth Strand poster contest, sponsored annually by the Elmhurst History Museum. It says, “The Elmhurst Airport was open in 1929. The airplanes had no road to land on so airplanes landed on grass runways. The airport had no lights so it was a daytime airport.”

This poster was made by Lucy Beal, a Hawthorne student. It tied for 3rd place in the Ruth Strand poster contest. It says, “White Birch belonged to the King and Wilder families before the Park District bought it in 1921. In 1922, the Elmhurst library moved into the building.”

Timothy Christian baseball team wins regional title Trojans explode for 10 runs in sixth inning against Westmont

The Timothy Christian baseball team had the heavy lumber going in the recent Class 2A IC Catholic Prep regional at Plunkett Park in Elmhurst.

The Trojans had 13 hits in their 14-7 win over Westmont in the regional championship game. It was Timothy Christian’s third regional title in a row. The Trojans played in the Class 2A IC Catholic Prep sectional earlier this week against Holy Trinity.

In the regional title win, Westmont took an early lead in the top of the second inning. Westmont’s run scored via a double, error and single.

The Sentinels added to their lead in

the third inning, scoring three runs on two singles, an error, a sacrifice fly and two doubles.

Timothy countered with two runs in its half of the third inning. Brady Klooster walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch. Trent Marrera also walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jimmy Allen hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Marrera.

Westmont added another run in the fourth with a walk, a bunt and error, a hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch. Westmont added two more in the fifth on a walk, double, error and single.

Timothy got two of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Garrett Pullen walked, stole second and

advanced to third on a groundout.

Pullen scored on a wild pitch, Marrera walked again but was thrown out trying to steal second. Allen reached on an error and scored on a double to left by Nick Huisman.

And then Timothy erupted for 10 runs in the sixth. Connor Gwaltney tripled, Ethan Roemmich had his third hit of the day, Jakob Loerop was hit by a pitch, Pullen had a bunt single, Harrison Stanton hit a bases-clearing triple, Marrera singled, Allen singled, Huisman walked, Thomas Becvar hit a sacrifice fly, Gwaltney came to bat again and singled, Roemmich hit a sacrifice fly, Loerop singled and Stanton hit a sacrifice fly, driving in his fourth run of the inning.

Nine Trojans had hits in the game led by Roemmich with three and Pullen and Gwaltney with two each.

Stanton had four RBI. Huisman was the starting pitcher. Allen picked up the win in relief. He went four innings and struck out eight and allowed only one run.

The win moved Timothy to 15-13 on the season.

Timothy reached the regional final with a 15-6 win against Northridge Prep. Northridge Prep walked 10 Timothy batters, all of which scored.

Allen went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI. Becvar had a homer and three RBI. Stanton also had two hits and two RBI. Ty Merrick had two RBI. Huisman had a double.

Loerop was the winning pitcher.

The IC Catholic Prep softball team made quick work of a pair of playoff foes and walked away with a regional title.

The Knights downed both Timothy Christian and DePaul College Prep to win their own Class 2A IC Catholic Prep regional title at Plunkett Park. The Knights have won five regional titles in a row and are looking for their third sectional title now in the last four seasons.

In a 15-1 win over Timothy Christian in the semifinals, the Knights had 14 hits. IC Catholic Prep scored five runs in the first inning, seven in the second inning and three in the third inning.

Alessandra Eccardt had a double, while Emma Lytton and Nicolette Pochop homered. Pochop was the winning pitcher and moved to 1-1.

The Knights then downed DePaul College Prep 15-1 for the regional title. The Knights had 15 hits and used a nine-run fourth inning to pull away.

Rebecca Cash was the winning pitcher. She improved to 11-1. Dani Murillo had two doubles, while Josie Lytton, Natalie Murillo and Cash each had a double. Josie Lytton hit two triples.

The two wins put IC Catholic Prep at 24-5 heading into this week’s Class 2A sectional.

“We’ve been hitting well,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Frank Reaber. “Everybody in the lineup has been hitting the ball well. Dani Murillo and Josie are hitting the cover off the ball. Josie was a foot away from putting the ball over the fence.

She’s hitting the ball well. Kayla (Faber-Cournane) and Alessandra have had some nice hits. Up and down the lineup, everybody is hitting the ball. The bottom of the lineup we have a lot of bunters who are bunting well. It’s hard to put it on one thing when they all are playing pretty well offensively.”

York baseball team opens playoffs as No. 2 sectional seed Dukes achieve 20-win season with victory over Proviso West

The York baseball team has been rewarded for a strong regular season.

The Dukes are the No. 2 seed in the Class 4A Bartlett sectional.

York opened regional play earlier this week at the Class 4A Elk Grove regional.

York finished the regular season with a 20-11 mark and went 10-8 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division action.

In recent play, the Dukes were 3-0 winners against Morton in a WSC crossover. Ian Steinorth went

1-for-2 with a run scored. Joey Orrico went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Joey Chiappetta had a hit and an RBI. His hit was a double Ryan Ross stole two bases.

Henry Judge was the winning pitcher. He threw a three-hit shutout and struck out three.

York then was swept in a threegame series against Hinsdale Central. In a 5-4 loss in the opener, York trailed 5-0 before scoring four runs in the top of the seventh. Ross had a hit and an RBI. Jake Hadawi had an RBI. Dan Brown and Clayton Letourneau each had a hit.

lief. Charlie Pakenas started and struck out three in three innings.

York then lost 9-7 to Hinsdale Central. Andrew Deardurff had a hit and two runs scored. Mike Pastuovic had two hits, one run and three RBI. Orrico had a hit and two RBI. One of Pastuovic’s hits was a double. York stole six bases in the game with Ross swiping three of them.

Hadawi took the loss in relief. He struck out three in 2 2/3 innings.

Kellen Gilmartin started the game.

York lost the finale 5-2 in a game that featured a combined 11 hits and 11 errors. Ross had a hit and an

RBI, as did Brown. Pakenas took the loss. He struck out four in 5 2/3 innings.

York also scored a 21-2 WSC Silver win against Proviso West to complete a three-game sweep.

The Dukes scored seven runs in the first inning and seven more in the second. The Dukes had only nine hits, but took advantage of eight walks and seven errors.

Deardurff had a hit, two runs scored and an RBI. Ross was 2-for4 with a run scored and three RBI. Pastuovic scored two runs. Orrico had two hits, four runs scored and an RBI. Bo Thomas had two hits.

Adam LaBarge had a hit, three runs scored and two RBI. Tamaine Durr scored three runs, had a hit and an RBI. Orrico and Ross each doubled.

Carl Baker was the winning pitcher. He struck out six in four innings and allowed only one hit. Timmy Bowbin pitched the fifth inning.

York then dropped a 12-1 non-conference game to Prospect.

York trailed only 3-1 before Prospect broke it open with nine runs in the sixth inning.

Steinorth, Deardurff, Pastuovic, Orrico, Brown, Chiappetta and Joe Goehl each had a hit. Deardurff had an RBI. Judge took the loss.

York boys track team qualifies three relays for state Timothy Christian’s Ross qualifies for state in three events

The York boys track team hit the relay trifecta.

The Dukes qualified three relays for this weekend’s state finals meet in Charleston out of the Class 3A Glenbard North sectional.

York finished fourth as a team with 85 points.

York’s 3,200 relay team won the sectional title with a time of 7:58.66.

That team included Jackson Bode, Mark Morgan, Daniel Klysh and Charlie Kern Jr. York’s 400 relay was second and earned a state berth with a time of 42.79. That group included Brendan Chaltin, Jimmy Hoffman, Deandre Klein and Jonathan Tanner.

The same four ran in the 800 relay and took second to earn another state bid with a time of 1:29.39.

Individually, York had four ath-

letes qualify for state. Dominic Pastorelle took second in the long jump with a mark of 21-3 1/2 and earned a state spot. Brendan Hill was second in the pole vault with a height of 143.

Kern Jr. also is headed to state in the 800 after winning the sectional title with a time of 1:53.25. Sean MacGregor qualified in the 1,600 with a second-place time of 4:23.45.

Timothy Christian boys track Timothy Christian’s Xavier Ross also hit the trifecta at the recent Class 1A Seneca sectional.

Ross qualified for this weekend’s Class 1A state finals meet in three individual events.

Ross won the 400 sectional title with a time of 50.29. He also qualified for state in the 100 after taking second with a time of 11.37. He made it three state events by taking second

in the 200 with a time of 23.30.

Ross will be joined in Charleston by teammate Caleb Marshall. The sophomore qualified for state in the 3,200 after taking second in the event with a time of 10:07.27.

IC Catholic Prep boys track The IC Catholic Prep boys track team took 11th at the Class 1A Seneca sectional with 19 points. The Knights had no state qualifiers.

Zielke named new Timothy Christian boys soccer coach

Elmhurst native previously was varsity assistant coach in program

Timothy Christian didn’t have to look too far to find its next boys soccer coach.

The school recently named Joel Zielke as the new head boys soccer coach, replacing Steve Fernandes.

Zielke was assistant varsity coach the last three years.

Zielke is no stranger to soccer coaching in general. Before Timothy, he was the head coach at Concordia International School in Shengai, China and also was an assistant coach at Concordia University Chicago for two years.

“I like the relationships I’ve built with the boys the last three years,” Zielke told the Independent. “I’m also committed to the school’s mission of developing Christian leaders. My wife teaches high-school art there and my kids go there so it’s a natural fit for me.”

Zielke takes over a program that is no stranger to success in recent times. “The kids are very committed,” he said. “The program has achieved a couple state titles in the last decade and a couple runner-up finishes. The program always is on the verge of making deep runs into the state playoffs. I’m excited about the group we have coming back next year. That type of success is something we will expect again.”

Zielke, who works in real estate, said his coaching philosophy is simple.

“We will out-work our opponent and commit to each other and play a team game,” he said. “We will move the ball on the ground and do some high-intensity defending.

We’ll out-work our opponent in every aspect of the game.”

Zielke is an Elmhurst native who went to high school at the now Walther Christian in Melrose Park (his dad was the principal there).

He played club soccer for Team Elmhurst and went on to Concordia-Chicago where he played for four years, was a three-year captain and a four-year all-conference selection. He’s played in a variety of men’s leagues over the last decade.

Zielke said his China roots come from following his now wife, Trixy, over to that country. “She was offered a job to teach highschool art there,” he said. “I taught high-school P.E. there. It was an amazing experience and a real eye-opening experience.”

Looking ahead, Zielke can’t wait to get things rolling with the Trojans. “I’m super-excited,” he said. “Come June 1 we’ll get after it. We don’t have any formal summer league scheduled, but we’ll try to schedule a couple friendlies and we’ll do a week of camp in June and one in July. We’ll be busy.”

The York softball team won the West Suburban Conference Silver Division title for the first time in 15 years this season. The Dukes finished 11-1 in conference play. York opens the Class 4A state playoffs this week.

The York girls track team had four individuals and two relays competing in the Class 3A state finals meet in Charleston.

York’s 3,200 relay team took fifth in the preliminaries with a time of 9:24.27 and qualified for the finals.

That team consisted of Sarah May, Katherine Tomaska, Emma Kern and Lydia Hickey.

York ended up ninth in the state with a time of 9:23.83 with May, Tomaska, Kern and Hickey.

Zoe Clark went 15-10 1/2 in the preliminaries of the long jump. Lilly Curry competed in the high jump, while Molly Evans went 36-1 1/2 in the triple jump in prelims.

May ran 5:26.65 in the 1,600.

York’s 1,600 relay team took sixth in prelims with a time of 4:05.65 with Isabella Walker, Sydney Malaga, Marissa Chavez and Sarah Pinkowski. Walker is a sophomore, Malaga is a freshman, Chavez is a sophomore and Pinkowski is a junior.

Alia Johnson, a freshman, took seventh in the prelims of the long jump with a mark of 15-5 1/2. Sophomore Hannah Johnson took sixth in the triple jump prelims with a mark of 32-11 1/4.

IC Catholic Prep’s 400 relay team took fourth in prelims with a time of 51.11 with Jaida Smith, Hannah Johnson, Olivia Slavin and Kiersten King. Slavin ran 17.32 in the 100 high hurdles in prelims.

The Knights’ 800 relay team of Slavin, Frankie Chaidez, Hannah Johnson and King took fourth in their heat in prelims with a time of 1:50.81.

Alia Johnson took seventh in her prelim heat of the 400 with a time of 1:03.21. King was fourth in her prelim heat in the 200 with a time of 26.42.

Timothy Christian girls track The Timothy Christian girls track team had two relays and three individuals in Charleston at the Class 1A meet.

The Trojans’ 3,200 relay team ran IC Catholic Prep girls track 10:23.61 in the prelims and qualified IC Catholic Prep had four individ- for the finals. That team included uals and two relays competing in the Rachel Stoll, Tracey Westra, Valerie Class 1A state finals in Charleston.

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer The IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team is headed to a Class 1A supersectional after winning its own IC Catholic Prep sectional.

The Knights defeated F.W. Parker 3-0 in the sectional semifinals and then defeated Chicago Holy Trinity 7-0 to win the sectional title.

The Knights played North Shore Country Day Tuesday at Concordia University in River Forest for a chance to go to the Class 1A state finals that start Friday at North Central College in Naperville.

The Knights were without the pitching services of Faber-Cournane in the regional due to injury, though she still played and batted in the two games.

“It’s been a little hard because Kayla has been hurt and hasn’t been able to pitch,” said Reaber. “Everything is on Rebecca, who is a freshman. She’s been pitching and doing real well. But it’s the end of the year and she’s a little sore. In our home tournament Rebecca and Kayla were out and we had Dani Murillo and Nicolette pitch. Overall, we’re playing well, but it’s a long grind.”

Reaber said Faber-Cournane’s pitching status for the sectional wasn’t known as of late last week.

“She warmed up 30 pitches and still was sore,” he said late last week.

“We’re going to shut her down (from) throwing until next Tuesday (when the sectional starts),” he said.

“Two days (last week) she threw 30 pitches. We’ll go from there. She’s our leadoff hitter and plays second. We’re trying to keep her to the shortest throw possible. She’s going to therapy. With all the rainouts we’ve had, you throw everything on top of everything and there are no rest days.”

Reaber gave additional high praise to Cash for her pitching acumen.

“She is pretty good and will be good,” he said. “She has a good

Reaber has had to make some defensive adjustments throughout the season. “Defensively, when Rebecca Cash pitches, we have to move kids to different spots,” he said. “I like the defense when Kayla pitches but you go with who you have. Our defense has been pretty good. We moved Josie Lytton out of catching to play shortstop. It’s something we had to do defensively. Josie is the best catcher in our area. Her sister, Emma, is catching now and also doing a great job. Emma will catch next year so we may as well get her the work now.”

Now, the Knights turn their attention to this week’s sectional.

“I like my team,” said Reaber.

“We can win state if we are right.

Having two pitchers like we do gives me more options when you have two with different speeds and motions.”

The Knights played Westmont Tuesday in the Class 2A Lisle sectional. If IC Catholic Prep won that game, it will play for the sectional title Saturday at 11 a.m. against either Lisle or Regina Dominican.

DPZ begins discussion of City code regarding membrane structures

According to a release issued by the City of Elmhurst, the Development, Planning and Zoning Committee (DPZ) met on May 14 to begin the initial review of the City Code regarding membrane structures on residential properties.

Elmhurst Building Code Amendment Section 2 #46.3102.0 currently states, “Membrane Structures shall not be permitted.” Municipal Code Chapter 22.42 – Regulations for specific uses (c)(2) “A mobile home and temporary tents and membrane structures shall not be permissible as an accessory building.”

A referral was made by two aldermen to the DPZ Committee to review the code regarding membrane structures. The referral was made after a case regarding an accessory garden structure was brought to the attention of the City’s Code Inspectors. The structure commonly referred to as a “hoop

liner requested that City staff provide additional information on hoop houses, greenhouses, conservatories and any other means to extend the growing season. Staff was also asked to provide information on how other communities handle temporary membrane structures.

Mayor Morley emphasized how important it is for the DPZ Committee to explore all options of extending the growing season so that if the topic is put before the Planning and Zoning Commission, the commission will have enough information to make a proper recommendation.

The DPZ Committee will continue this discussion on May 29 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall. Aldermen appreciate input from residents on this topic and take all feedback into consideration when making their recommendations. Rotary donates $1,000 to York’s Interact Club project The Elmhurst Rotary Club has donated $1,000 to RevelationGolf, a charity selected by the York High School Interact Club. Elmhurst Rotary sponsors and mentors the Interactors as they carry out service projects, develop leadership skills and promote international understanding.

RevelationGolf is an organization that uses the game of golf to enhance and develop a meaningful quality of life for cancer survivors, individuals with a physical disability and at-risk girls. The not-for-profit group provides an environment that promotes one’s uniqueness and encourages social, emotional and physical health while growing in the game of golf.

The Rotary check was presented after a special program by Interact Club leaders and faculty advisor

Leslie Stipe. A club highlight this year, was the increase in members from six to more than 20. Successful fundraisers and projects, included adopting a family for Christmas, sponsoring a mitten tree for Onward House-Chicago kids, donating to the Wounded Warrior Project, sending letters of support to Stone Douglas High School and sending books to Onward House. The club also participated in an Easter Seals service day.

The York Interact Club was founded in 2011. Meetings are held every other Thursday in the morning before school. The Elmhurst Rotary Club meets weekly on Thursdays at noon for lunch and stimulating programs at Angelo’s Ristorante, 247 N. York Street.

Area pizzerias delight guests at Top Pizza Taste of Elmhurst The success of the District 205 Foundation’s Top Pizza Taste of Elmhurst fundraising event continued this year as more than 500 pizza-loving guests of all ages descended on York High School on April 26th to enjoy selections from nine very generous local restaurants and pizzerias.

The $10 entrance fee enabled guests to sample a variety of pizzas that were donated and served by this year’s participating vendors that included Aurelio’s, Bacci, DiLeo’s, Fratello’s, Gulliver’s, Lou Malnati’s, Mama Maria’s, Roberto’s and Rosati’s. Many visitors were surprised at the quantity and variety of slices they were able to try, and went home full and excited about discovering new pizzerias and new flavors.

“It seems that most people tend to go with the ‘usual’ when it comes to ordering pizza, so it is really fun to provide an opportunity for restau-

rants to showcase their pies and guests to try something new that may become a future favorite,” said Foundation Executive Director Lisa Fanelli.

In a fun, light-hearted competition, guests also voted for their favorites in multiple categories. Elmhurst’s Fratello’s has generously participated every year and this year brought a gluten-free option that came in second in that category to Baci, which received favorite gluten free honors. Newcomer Rosati’s tied with Roberto’s for favorite specialty pizza, and first-time participant Aurelio’s topped the sauce and pepperoni pizza categories. Gulliver’s came in a close second in both sausage and crust categories to Lou Malnati’s, which also won favorite cheese.

On this particular evening in April, pizza fans gave the Over-

all Favorite Pizza Bronze medal to Aurelio’s and DiLeo’s (tie), Silver to Mama Maria’s and Gold to the returning champion, Lou Malnati’s.

The real winners are the students of Elmhurst, because proceeds from this and all Elmhurst District 205 Foundation fundraising events support educational enhancements for all 13 public schools. York’s spring musical earns four IHSMTA nominations The Illinois chapter of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (IHSMTA) - The Jimmy Awards - serves as an annual national celebration of outstanding achievement in musical theater performance by high school students. IHSMTA categories include Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Overall Production.

York’s production of Tuck Everlasting has been nominated as one of the five finalists in the State for Best Production. In addition, Carina Kanzler, who played Mae Tuck, and Erin Lee, who played Winnie Foster, have been nominated as finalists for Best Actress. Nybo worked with the chief sponsor, State Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park), to craft a revised version of the Gun Dealer License Certification Act and the Combating Illegal Gun Trafficking Act that ensures gun dealers operate safely—but removes the bureaucratic red tape and high fees included in the previous provisions that Nybo said would have hurt smaller businesses.

“At its heart, this is a public safety measure—and an answer to the call from our constituents to ensure businesses are only selling firearms to individuals who are legally permitted to carry them,” he said. “Senate Bill 337 is an impactful initiative and compromise that both sides of the aisle can support, and I encourage my colleagues in the House to approve the proposal and push it to the Governor for signing.”

Nybo negotiates for more business-friendly Gun Dealer Licensing legislation Hours after State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) and a bipartisan group of legislators gathered in support of a revised version of the Gun Dealer License Certification Act and the Combating Illegal Gun Trafficking Act, the Senate Judiciary Committee swiftly passed the amendment with Nybo sitting in substitution on the committee hearing.

Following an outpouring of input from 24th District residents requesting greater oversight of firearms transactions and safer business practices, Nybo spent several weeks in negotiations with chief sponsor, State Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park), to compromise on a more business-friendly proposal.

“A significant percentage of firearms recovered at Chicago crime scenes can be traced back to gun dealer shops in Illinois,” Nybo said in the press conference. “As we talk about a comprehensive approach to making our communities safer and dealing with gun violence, we must also focus on reducing gun trafficking and straw purchases by requiring gun dealers to follow common-sense practices.”

The original gun dealer licensing proposal concerned many legislators.

Businesses would have likely spent a great deal of time and resources applying for a license and complying with the new regulations—and the State would have struggled to fulfill all of its new responsibilities.

Changes in the new version, Senate Bill 337, are significant: • The process for federally-licensed businesses to get certified is streamlined; • Gun dealers must follow various “best practices,” but there are fewer bureaucratic requirements; • State regulators no longer have unlimited authority to impose new rules beyond those in the legislation; • Law enforcement (not government bureaucrats) is responsible for ensuring compliance and penalizing bad actors; and • Businesses can be penalized for selling firearms illegally or operating unsafely, but no longer reasons unrelated to gun safety.

“The bottom line is that we have eliminated a lot of bureaucratic red tape and given much more clarity and focus on our most important goals—to ensure Illinois gun dealers operate as safely as possible and to allow law enforcement to target those who are engaged in criminal activity,” said Nybo. “This does not infringe on the Second Amendment; it only makes us safer.”

Senate Bill 337 will now move to Senate floor for consideration.

Reader: It’ okay to question authority, but fight guns with ‘thoughtful votes’

This is a personal observation from an old USMC veteran who was a young person before television and does not fully understand the Web and social media. It is directed to the admirable caring and loving kids who walked out of school to take action against the horrendous shootings of late.

We as Americans participated in such actions against the legitimate governmental authorities back in 1776 and the outcome was great;

then again, in the Civil War and that also turned out for the better. To be sure, those wars like all wars were horrendous.

My warning is to be careful how often we citizens decide this is necessary. Some countries have these revolts constantly in their history.

We, in this country usually solve our problems by voting. Assembling to scream slogans and carry signs to demonstrate our freedom to do so can cause chaos and mayhem and lead to the absolute freedom of anarchy. Then, like it or not, in the spirit of the second amendment, some patriots want to grab their guns and settle the argument in the same way as the Civil War and the Revolutionary War of years ago— not that many years ago. I believe when I was born, some Civil War fighters were still around.

Too much “freedom” can lead to being manipulated by an anarchist who just might be a tyrant-in-themaking. Thank Hitler, Mussolini and even Fidel. The founding fathers of our country created the second amendment to give us the right to defend ourselves against such tyrants with deadly fore. Extreme and momentous but nothing in common with the one-in-a-million nut case who becomes an “active shooter.” That nut is beyond my understanding. The fact that there are some nuts who use a rental truck to effectively produce the same kind of mayhem seems to confirm that even eliminating every kind of gun

would not have the desired effect.

I believe, as you do, the walk-out was to demonstrate love and caring about others. Important and good, but don’t let such actions become more important than the ballot box.

The President and our other leaders are elected and whether or not you voted for them or the other guy, “we” elected them. To hate them personally or their family or their hair cut or hate a representative of a legally formed organization like the NRA is foolish.

Hatred of red pickup trucks and the desire to destroy every one of them because your dog was run over by a red pickup is also as foolish.

Your love and caring is good and was probably invented by our Creator.

A gun, like a pickup truck, can certainly be dangerous and deadly.

But unlike us, those things cannot love or care or hate.

Why not organize protests against bullying or failing to love or care for those who are hard to love or even care about? And try to be a loving caring example yourself.

That can make a difference for sure.

Fight the guns and safety issues with thoughtful votes. Make a definite difference immediately by being a thoughtful, caring example to those around you every day Practice the Golden Rule. Google anarchy, republic, democracy and bullying.
