At its meeting on Monday, May 6, the Elmhurst City Council approved conditional use for a 92-foot-high, eight-story apartment building at 183, 189, 191 Addison Avenue. It prompted a discussion among alderman regarding how much density the rental building would bring to downtown and what affect it would have on traffic flow and safety.

“This is a report for a proposed new development in the core for our downtown, which calls for higher density, residential and mixed-use uses within the core,” said 4th Ward Alderman Noel Talluto, Vice Chair of the City’s Development, Planning & Zoning (DPZ) Committee. “The applicant here is requesting both a conditional use for a higher building height, eight stories vs. the allowed 77 feet; a variation on the front yard setback requirement, which is actually a reverse variation, a variation backwards or away; a variation on the private parking garage space length requirement and the aisle width requirement.”

Ald. Mike Brennan (7th Ward) asked what the additional two stories would be used for or how many units it would accommodate.

“The reason I brought it up is because I talked to several residents about downtown development and one recurring concern is … traffic congestion,” he said, adding that two stories won’t make that much of a difference in traffic flow concerns.

Developer drops plans for Route 83 and St. Charles Road 16-pump gas station-convenience center pulls out

After a group of residents in Elmhurst’s Pick Subdivision came together to protest a development project being considered at the northwest corner of Illinois Rte. 83 and St. Charles Road, and after a striking defeat from the Elmhurst Zoning and Planning Commission, developers of the Ambrose Design

Group in Crystal Lake told City of Elmhurst it was pulling out of the development.

The Pick Subdivision includes the area west of Rte. 83 to Villa Avenue in Villa Park. The site under consideration was most recently occupied by Back Alley Burger and Krave Restaurant; prior to that, the location had a Kentucky Fried Chicken and an independent restau-

rant called the Kopper Kettle.

Preliminary site plans were presented to the City’s Zoning & Planning Commission (ZPC) by Ambrose Design Group for the site known as 601-609 St. Charles Road. The Ambrose plan calls for a 16-pump service station, convenience shopping center and a carry-out restaurant, with plans for another drive-thru restaurant some-

time in the future.

The Zoning Commission at that time unanimously rejected the plans by a vote of 7-0 (two Commissioners were absent).

Neighbors underscored the concerns that the project would negatively impact neighborhoods and parks, the local water main, storm drainage, Salt Creek, Salt Creek Trail, the Forest Preserve and what

On Saturday, May 18, about 150 guests came out to the American Legion Post THB #187 to help kick off its year-long celebration of its 100th anniversary. A buffet dinner was served, a long list of live musical performances got everyone up and dancing, and a table of raffle prizes was available to get everybody winning.

The celebration will continue throughout the year and will feature a pull-out section about the Elmhurst American Legion Post in a November issue of the Elmhurst Independent for Veterans Day. There’s another reason to visit the Legion every Thursday through the summer and that is “Cars Under the Stars & Stripes.” The car show will be held every Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Post at Spring & Butterfield Roads, where visitors are invited inside to enjoy $5 food specials in the bar.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a regular meeting on Tuesday, May 14 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. Board member Courtenae Trautmann was absent.

There were no public comments.

Students honored • The board recognized the three district students who advanced to Reflections, the National PTA arts program that invites children to create works of art in any of six different categories—dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. The theme for Reflections in the 2018-19 school year was “Heroes Around Me.” Twenty-four district students advanced to the state competition. The three district students who advanced to the national competition were Jackson Elementary fifth-grader Lily Tompos for her dance choreography piece, Lincoln Elementary School second-grad-

er Nick Deligiannis for his music composition and Edison Elementary School fourth-grader Chelsea Pinto for her visual arts piece.

• The board also recognized the Churchville Middle School students who made up the school’s two Coderz teams that competed in Code Rush—a nationwide competition hosted by Codemonkey Inc. The event exposes students to coding in a real programming language and requires teams to take part in a total of 141 different challenges. The two Churchville Coderz teams competed nationally against other students in grades 6-8. One of the Churchville teams earned second-place honors.

The other team won a third-place award.

• The board recognized the eight members of York High School’s Class of 2019 who have been named as finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Those students are: Michael Bindeman, Joseph Black, Calvin Carta, Christian Glosner, William Phillips, Edward Ryan, Hayden Snyder and Cecilia Stumpf.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s mission is to recognize and honor academically talented students in the United States. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level.

Board approves $1.16M for paving projects The board voted unanimously to award a bid for Troch-McNeil Paving Co., in the amount of $1,159,000 for paving projects in the district this summer. The district received five responses for the project. Troch-McNeil Paving Co. submitted the lowest qualified bid. The projects related to the bid include the parking lot at Churchville, the west drive at York, the northeast lot at Bryan Middle School and the entrance at Jackson.

The board also voted unanimously to approve a bid in the amount of $220,000 with Archon Construction Co. for sewer work related to the four summer paving projects.

Moyer: Graduated income tax could hurt revenues Near the end of the meeting, Moyer talked to the board about a bill in the Illinois State Senate—Senate Bill 690. Moyer said the Senate recently passed the bill, which allows for a graduated income tax if approved by voters in 2020. An amendment to that bill reportedly includes a prop-

“This project has been before the City for some period of time, we’ve heard lots of feedback from residents,” said Ald. Marti Deuter (1st).

“What I keep coming back to is that we changed our downtown zoning. I didn’t support those changes when they came before us a couple of years ago, but that is our code now. I look at this project as consistent with what our code now allows. We have a process to ask for relief, in this case, conditional use and the variations, and this applicant went through the process. I am in agreement with the findings of the ZPC and DPZ that they have met the standards.

“So regardless of my personal perspective, I don’t think I can be arbitrary about how the code is applied.

I do think as a Council we can work together to make sure those zoning changes that are now allowed in our downtown work as well as they can and that we can manage development as well as we can.

“I support the proposal that is before us tonight.”

“They are asking for conditional use approval from six stories by right to eight stories tall and I think that’s an acceptable thing, but it is a significant ‘ask’ to do that,” said Alderman Bob Dunn (2nd). “When applicants come to the City with developments, I want to see that the City follows our Downtown Plan, particularly our guidelines for architectural styles and building materials.

“I realize we can’t legislate style, but when I look at it, I have questions as to whether it is actually in the spirit of following those architectural

guidelines. I think if someone comes in with a significant request for variations, we need to sit down and have a serious discussion to make sure those plans meet with our Downtown Plan.”

Dunn read a few examples from the Downtown Plan, noting that it calls for earth tone stone ranging from masonry brick to stones.

“We also call out what not to use like aluminum siding, plastic panels, concrete form board, etc.,” he said. “I would like to see the applicant take our downtown guidelines a little more seriously. I’m not really satisfied at this point that the applicant is very focused on working with our design guidelines and specifically what is laid out in our Downtown Plan. I’m sure the structure is sound and the units are probably well-appointed, but on the outside, I don’t know. Let’s face it, 98% of the people only see the outside of our downtown buildings.

“I will not be able to support this tonight.”

Ald. Polomsky asked for clarification on the building materials being earth tone brick or stone.

Mayor Steven Morley asked her to clarify her question: was she asking what materials would be used or if they are allowed by our code? Alderman Mark Mulliner (7th), also a member of the DPZ Committee, offered a reply.

“First of all, they do meet the building code,” he said. “Second, we’re dealing with a zoning issue, it’s not about the building itself, we’re dealing with a few zoning variances. There is a TIF ask coming and more than likely that calls for us to refine it a little bit, if we’re not happy

with their appearance, we can negotiate with the applicant.

“This will also allow us to get the PUD [Planned Urban Development] passed because once that is passed, it will give us more right to ask for what we really want in the downtown.”

Alderman Michael Bram (3rd Ward) felt the biggest challenge was that adding this much density could also cause issues with our aging sanitary system.

He noted there had been sanitary issues during past flooding incidents and at this time, it is not known how this development or other future projects will impact utilities like sanitary.

“I feel like that hasn’t been answered and without that, I cannot support this report,” he said.

Mulliner spoke up again, saying that the building was going to have a green roof, which would retain more water on the property than would otherwise be possible. He also said that, regarding utilities and stress on the sanitary system, the developer did a “model” process, which is a way of testing to see if the utilities are adequate to serve the property.

The “model” assessment found them to be acceptable.

With that, the vote was called and the measure passed 10-3 with 1 absent. Yea votes came from Aldermen Talluto, Mulliner, Brennan, Deuter, Mark Sabatino (1st), Norm Leader (2nd), Kevin York (4th), Tina Park (5th), Scott Levin (5th), and Jim Kennedy (6th).

Those voting ‘nay’ were Aldermen Polomsky, Dunn and Bram. Alderman Michael Honquest (6th) was absent.

erty tax freeze, which would take effect in 2022. Moyer said the district’s property tax extension limitation, which is set at the lesser of 5 percent or the percentage increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), has averaged about $1.6 million in recent years. If Senate Bill 690 went

into effect, the district’s extension limitation could be set at zero. Moyer said the district could lose close to $1 million a year in revenue if the bill is enacted.

The board will hold its next regular meeting on May 28.

School Board hears report on all-day kindergarten plans Also presentation on special ed program

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 14 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. The meeting included a report about the district’s plans to implement all-day kindergarten.

The passage of the referendum in the election of November, 2018, will provide enough space for the district’s schools to offer all-day kindergarten. Superintendent David Moyer stated that District 205 had been an outlier by not offering all-day kindergarten. According to information provided by the district, 67 percent of schools in DuPage County offer all-day kindergarten.

The district is committed to fully implement all-day kindergarten by the 2024-25 school year, or earlier if possible. All-day kindergarten in the district could begin as early as the 2020-21 school year, the report said. District 205 will continue to offer half-day kindergarten.

A tuition subcommittee determined a break-even fee of $2,700 per year for all-day kindergarten. There will reportedly be a reduced rate of 50 percent off—$1,350 per year—to families who qualify.

The board will reportedly vote to approve early implementation and tuition provisions for all-day kindergarten at the next regular board meeting on May 28.

School Board hears analysis of special education The meeting also featured a presentation about an analysis of the district’s special education program. The full analysis and report are available on the district’s website—elmhurst205.org. Kathleen Kosteck, the district’s assistant superintendent for student services, gave the presentation during the meeting. Kosteck noted that most of the District 205 students who receive special education services spend a majority of the school day in the general education classroom.

The district is therefore committed to enhancing related professional learning for all of its teachers.

Noel Rosario, 41, of Addison, was charged with DUI, failure to give information after a property damage accident and use of an unsafe tire near North and Glade at around 1:26 a.m.

May 11 Slawomir Szponar, 60, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Fremont at around 9:58 a.m.

Arson

May 14 A reporting officer was called to assist the Fire Department regarding a small fire in the bathroom at a residence in the 100 block of Fellows at around 7:18 p.m. It was discovered that unknown suspects reportedly lit a roll of toilet paper on fire and left it in a sink. The fire was extinguished by the Fire Department.

A witness stated he saw four teenagers—three males and a female—near the building just prior to the report of the fire.

Assault, battery

May 14 A victim at York High School related at around 7:28 a.m. that after arriving at school, the suspect walked by and asked him why he was giving him dirty looks. A verbal argument began between the two and the suspect reportedly punched the victim in the head. The suspect was placed under arrest, processed, and released to his father. The case was referred to Juvenile Probation.

May 13 Police said that subsequent to a call for a medic assist at Elmhurst Hospital at around 12:37 a.m., Dewayne Washington, 27, of Madison, Wis., was escorted into the hospital by officers and medics. Once inside, Washington allegedly pushed the reporting officer and was then taken into custody. According to police, a loaded handgun and one extra loaded magazine were located in his jacket pocket. Washington was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting arrest and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon in a prohibited area.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass, criminal defacement May 11-May 13 A reporting officer in the 600 block of Lamont Road responded to the above location for a criminal damage to property report. The complainant stated a bullet hole was located in a window on the west side of the building. The reporting officer observed two panes of glass had been damaged and located a dented bullet on the inside ledge. The complainant stated he is unaware of any problems at the company or anyone having been recently terminated. The window faces I-290 and Route 83.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disturbance

May 13 Police said officers responded to the 500 block of E. Park at around 11:16 a.m. for the report of a domestic disturbance. A victim stated her husband was in the residence destroying her property. The victim’s husband stated he only made statements about destroying her property but never actually followed through with the statement. Both parties were asked to separate for the day.

Fraudulent ID

CALL 800-222-TIPS May 11 A victim in the 100 block of Linden told police at around 3:13 p.m. that she and the suspect had a verbal argument which turned physical. The victim’s son then entered the room attempting to break up the two when the suspect allegedly began hitting him. The suspect, according to police, left the scene prior to the reporting officer’s arrival. The victims did not wish to sign complaints. Contact was made with the suspect who related she would stay at a hotel for the night.

May 10 Kevon Stewart, 18, of Elmhurst, was charged with possession of cannabis and obstructed driver’s view subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and I-290 at around 4:35 p.m.

Police said that subsequent to a verbal argument between the victim and the suspect in the 800 block of N. Indiana at around 10:45 a.m., a physical altercation ensued. The victim did not want to pursue charges and only wanted the suspect to leave. The suspect was transported to a local motel.

Disorderly conduct May 10 Linzy Maldonao, 32, of Elmhurst, was charged with attempted disorderly conduct/ filing a false police report at a store in the 100 block of Robert Palmer Drive at around 4:30 p.m. Police said Maldonao related a friend had stolen her prescription medication while she was inside the store. Maldonao later admitted she was attempting to make a false police report, according to police.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication

May 12 Trent Nybert, 20, of Villa Park, was charged with consumption of alcohol and possession of a fictitious ID; Taylor Zurliene, 20, of Streamwood, was issued citations for consumption of alcohol and possession of a fictitious ID; Roger Nosal, 19, of Addison, was issued citations for consumption of alcohol and possession of a fictitious ID; Taylor Davitt, 20, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor; and Samantha Derango, 20, of Arlington Heights, was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor subsequent to a tavern check in the 100 block of S. York at around 12;30 a.m.

Jack Ricobene, 20, of Elmhurst, was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, possession of a fictitious ID, and a minor on license premises subsequent to a bar check at a pub in the 100 block of N. Addison at

May 12 Mahogany Beecham, 33, of Chicago, was charged with possession of fraudulent identification, driving while license suspended and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Emory at around 5:06 p.m. Police said Beecham offender was in possession of multiple files containing Social Security cards and driver’s licenses from various states which were fictitious.

May 15 Steven Gonzalez, 19, of Melrose Park, and Evelyn Carrera-Garcia, 19, of Forest Park, were issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Fremont at around 11:44 p.m.

Gregg Thoney, 43, of Elmhurst, and Craig R. Vincus, 49, of Westmont, were charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Kent at around 5:12 p.m. Vincus also was issued citations for an improper turn and failure to signal.

May 10 A reporting officer was notified by York High School personnel of two suspects in possession of two vaping devices containing suspect THC. The two suspects were issued citations possession of an alternative nicotine product and possession of drug paraphernalia.

May 9 Police said a school administrator at York High School received information regarding possible drug use and conducted a search of the suspect’s backpack. A vape cartridge containing a brown tar-like substance (suspect THC) was located inside the backpack. The suspect was cited for possession of cannabis and his parent was notified.

Suspicious circumstances

May 11 While conducting a business check at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 4:08 p.m., a reporting officer was advised by an employee of a suspicious male who was inside the store 10 minutes prior to the officer’s arrival. The suspect, described as a black male approximately 45-50 years of age, wearing a black Chicago Bulls hat and a blue hoody, reportedly had a large quantity of liquor and steaks in a shopping cart and was wandering back and forth between aisles. When the suspect was approached by an employee, he quickly exited the store, leaving the cart behind. He was last seen entering a tan Pontiac G6 and fled the parking lot at a high rate of

speed.

May 10 A victim in the 500 block of S. York told police at around 10:03 p.m. that while getting gas at the above location, she observed an unknown male parked next to her with what appeared to be a gun in his hand. The area was checked for the suspect with no results.

May 8 A victim near Elm Tree Lane and Fair told police at around 5:16 p.m. while she was walking home, a small white car driven by someone described as a white female, approximately 40 years old, wearing glasses and appearing to have burns or scars on half of her face, approached the victim and asked if she needed a ride home. Then the female driver stated she thought the victim was her daughter.

The vehicle then left the area.

May 14 Police said officers responded to a hotel in the 300 block of N. Route 83 at around 12:45 a.m. to the report of a subject refusing to leave the hotel. Upon arrival, the victim was located, reportedly had slurred speech, and could not explain how he got there. The victim had been staying in a room which was being paid for with a fraudulent credit card used by the suspect, according to police. Police said the victim admitted to taking PCP and was transported to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment. The suspect was unable to be located.

Identity theft was reported at Elm Creek Drive at around 3 p.m. A victim had packages delivered to his residence. The victim did not order anything and refused the delivery. The victim learned that an unknown suspect used his debit card to make a purchase.

May 13 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of E. St. Charles at around 10:33 a.m. A reporting officer spoke to the victim who stated she received a phone call from an unknown suspect claiming to work for the Social Security Administration. The victim provided the unknown suspect with her Social Security number.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of W. Harrison at around 9:08 p.m.

A victim told police that an unknown suspect entered two of their unlocked vehicles and removed medication from the middle console.

Nothing else was missing from either vehicle.

May 11 Janice Kuzel, 41, of Northlake, was charged with theft in the 600 block of W. North at around 11:37 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a theft at a store, the victim related while shopping with her daughters, one of them left their Apple I-Phone 7 on a store rack. According to police, Kuzel walked by the area, saw the phone and placed it in her purse.

Theft was reported in the 300 block of W. Grand at around 10:34 a.m. A witness told police they observed a suspect described as a black male load the victim’s black and orange backpack-style Echo blower into his grey Ford Escort and leave the area traveling east on Grand Avenue. The area was checked with no results.

Legion member joins 100th anniversary celebration

When Peggy Krihak took part in field maneuvers during her training with the U. S. Army, she and the other women were not allowed to use weapons. Instead, she and her fellow female soldiers marched out onto the field and watched. Peggy admits she did not like that one bit.

“I wanted to shoot a gun!” she told the Independent in an exclusive interview during the kick-off celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Elmhurst American Legion Post THB #187. “Eventually, we were allowed to, but that was a difficult thing to do, to just march outside and watch. Now weapons training is mandatory for all genders.”

A member of Post #187 for 26 years, Peggy served in the Army for a year and a half, followed by 26 years in the Illinois Army National Guard.

Peggy has served three times as Commander of Post #187 and, as a dual membership, served twice as President of the Legion Auxiliary.

She served in 1973 through the end of the Vietnam War. Asked her overall feelings about the armed services, Peggy said, “I always wore the uniform with pride.

Theft was reported in the 300 block of S. Spring at around 11:31 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect took his Asus 7-inch tablet. The victim could not remember if the tablet was in his backpack or if he left it at the gazebo at Spring and the Prairie Path. The gazebo was checked with no results. The victim is staying at PADS and stated anyone would have access to his backpack.

May 10 Theft was reported in the 400 block of N. Highview at around 6:11 p.m. A victim told police that he left his lawnmower unattended while mowing his front lawn. The victim stepped inside his house for 10 minutes, and when he returned outside, the lawnmower was missing. The victim left the lawnmower on his property, but close to the street. The victim believes scrappers may have removed the lawnmower, thinking it was trash.

May 7-May 10 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 9:51 a.m. The complainant, a manager at the store, told police after noticing several bottles of alcohol missing from the liquor department, the video surveillance was reviewed. A suspect described as a white female between 5’2” and 5’4”, approximately 25 years of age, was observed removing five bottles of champagne and left the store without paying. Further investigation is pending.

May 9 Victor M. Cerezo, 31, of Burbank, was charged with three counts of theft at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 10:57 p.m. Police said officers located suspicious persons behind the business who were stealing milk and pop crates and loading them into a van and a Penske truck. The driver of the Penske truck fled the scene. Cerezo was stopped on scene and was found to be in possession of 262 pop crates, according to police.

A victim in the 100 block of E. First told police at around 4:36 p.m. that he received a call from the police department stating his wallet was found and would be available for pickup at the front desk. The victim picked up his wallet, left, and returned sometime later to advise that he was missing some of his money from the wallet.

May 1-May 9 Theft by deception was reported in the 200 block of Monterey. A victim told police that she received a call from an unknown suspect stating the victim had won cash and a new car.

The unknown suspect stated the victim would need to make several cash deposits and needed them mailed over night to speed up the process.

The victim mailed several deposits.

The victim later learned she was a victim of a scam. This case is pending investigation.

Dr. Ivan agrees with doctor who opposes marijuana legalization Hurrah for Dr. Aaron Weiner in Viewpoint of the Elmhurst Independent.

His opinion article needs to be seen by everyone asap. We are under duress to get out as much info as possible regarding Illinois’ proposed marijuana (MJ) legalization bill.

We are in a political storm of progressive agenda throughout the country. We are no longer asked to tolerate, but to now accept and even endorse those things which we once nuanced and snickered about in whispered conversations, done on the sly by a few, is now thrown in our faces and open to the public.

Those who advocate, even doctors, tout the medical benefit and managing the underculture of people who frequent MJ. But there is a cost.

This drug is a drug and it has consequences.

As the great economist Thomas Sowell once said the test for any new policy is to ask the question “at what cost?” The cost of legalizing MJ is too great.

Those of us against legalization, and other socialist-type policies have to pick up the pieces of shattered lives these government policies leave behind. Dr. Weiner correctly identified the potential dangers in the bill and only touches upon the growing American drug culture, but doesn’t go into the real cost to our families, our communities and society in general.

We have long known governments do not necessarily have our best interests in mind. Government will spend all it has and if you give it more, it will spend more. So my goals have always been fiscal conservatism and to reduce spending and reliance on government. Despite this, local, state, and the federal governments throughout the country are growing. There is an alarming increase in federal reliance.

So the questions we should ask is at what cost are we willing to legalize and make another drugs mainstream in an already over-drugged society?

Dr. Weiner didn’t talk about how MJ effects our brain pleasure centers, reduces our drive, and the gateway drug deniers obviously have not had a family member devastated by the ravishes of listlessness, homelessness and criminality that often ensues. Look at what’s happening in Chico, Ca. where my family resides, or in San Francisco, and watch the video “Seattle is dying.” Even in an environment of acceptance, the homelessness is increasing and becoming an incredible public crisis.

Sure there are those who dabble in pot and continue to be productive members, and keep their pot participation on the sly, but legalizing it

would logarithmically grow the community problems it inevitably creates. For what? So government can have more money to pay for more and more of it’s spending and bad contract negotiations, and bad policies and former government representatives who “double-dipped” and lead to our borrowed pension crisis?

Our property taxes will continue to rise anyway, ours went up 35% this year, as well as all the additive costs that makes Chicago the #1 in debt city in America and Illinois one of the worst run and corrupt states in the nation. The new governor, who surprisingly has enjoyed no criticism, is already advertising his tax increases on TV to make it seem more palatable.

Write your reps, and tell this governor he needs to be more fiscally responsible, rather than doing something we have not asked for and incurring the cost of broken lives, communities, and hearts.

Senator working to speed up forensic testing State Sen. Tom Cullerton is taking action to help eliminate the backlog of evidence sitting unchecked at state forensic labs.

Cullerton (D-Villa Park) passed House Joint Resolution 7, which directs the Auditor General to conduct a performance audit of the Illinois State Police Division of Forensic Sciences.

“Forensic evidence can make or break the outcome of a case,” Cullerton said. “These scientific procedures are increasingly important in solving

crimes. It is imperative that we speed up this process to ensure that justice is delivered swiftly.”

The resolution directs the auditor general to examine crime labs’ equipment, procedures, and staffing levels with the goal of identifying and reporting to the General Assembly on factors preventing them from compliance with federal rules on swiftly processing evidence.

The current backlog of biological evidence includes numerous cases of violent crimes, including mur-

ders, shootings, and criminal sexual assaults, that end up being delayed for long periods of time. It typically takes at least one year for biological evidence to be processed by the state crime labs.

In today’s climate where police and prosecutors are increasingly scrutinized about their procedures, DNA evidence is crucial to the successful prosecution of criminal cases.

“One of the most important players in any type of testimony often isn’t a person but the forensic evidence,”

Cullerton said. “Our hope is this report will provide the General Assembly with the knowledge to help give the Illinois State Police the necessary tools to drastically improve turnaround and ensure they are in compliance with federal protocols.”

This bipartisan initiative is sponsored by state Rep. David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) in the House.

Sen. Glowiak focuses on human trafficking

One of the fastest-growing criminal activities in the world remains largely invisible, but that could change as state Sen. Suzy Glowiak works to provide hospitality workers with the tools to spot and report on human trafficking.

Glowiak (D-Western Springs) passed House Bill 3101, which would require hotels and motels to train employees to recognize the signs of human trafficking and know what to do when reporting it to au-

thorities.

“Just as we’ve discovered that teachers or hairdressers can be the ones who most readily spot the telltale signs of domestic violence, we’re learning that hotel employees might be the ones who spot human trafficking,” Glowiak said. “We all are taught to step up when we see wrongdoing, and this training will give hospitality workers the knowledge and build the confidence to be able to identify signs of human traf-

ficking and act quickly to do the right thing.”

Under the proposal, the Illinois Department of Human Services would develop a human trafficking recognition training program for hotel and motel employees. Human trafficking is now the second-largest criminal activity in the world and the fastest-growing. The International Labor Organization estimates that there are 40.3 million victims of human trafficking globally.

“It’s crucial that we take the lessons learned by other states and implement them in Illinois to help put a stop to this criminal activity,” Glowiak said.

House Bill 3101 passed the Senate’s Human Services Committee with unanimous support and now heads to the full Senate for consideration.

give much thought to the concept of liking them.

Like does not always precede love. Sometimes it does. You might like a friend and then grow to love them. You probably liked your significant other before loving them.

But with kids it is just the opposite.

You love them first and – in the

trenches. Creating a family. Raising kids. Putting band aids on boo boos and wiping noses and bottoms. It was hard work. Quite literally 24/7.

Sleep deprived doesn’t even begin to describe it.

We are now on the tail end. We can sleep when we want. Everyone at our house can do their own wiping. I am overjoyed.

It’s been a more than few years I guess and a gradual process – this decrease in parental workload and responsibility. My husband and I have found ourselves alone in the house on more than a few occasions.

Sometimes we eat dinner – just the

best of circumstances – like them later. Love is one thing. Like is another. Both are good. Both are great. Loving your son is wonderful.

Liking him is a bonus. Ditto that for your daughter. Double ditto for a granddaughter.

My life is filled with bonuses.

Sigh of contentment.

For years (decades) I never really thought about liking my husband.

I loved him, of course. But I didn’t contemplate the like factor. He’d probably admit the same. We were too busy to dwell upon the likes of like.

He and I spent many years in the

two of us. Other times we watch a movie without interruption. We have the opportunity for extended conversations. We’ve established a cadence to our days and weeks.

We’ve created a new routine without really thinking about it. And in the midst of this I’ve discovered something pretty powerful: we still like each other.

We get along. We talk. We laugh.

We share stories. We remember. We plan for the future. We like being together.

We are friends.

Elmhurst to celebrate 101st Memorial Day Parade Ceremony to follow in Wilder Park

Led by Grand Marshal Lori Tompos, a Desert Storm and Gulf War combat veteran as a Captain in the United States Army and resident of Elmhurst, some 90 entries will march in Elmhurst’s 101st Annual Memorial Day Parade through downtown Elmhurst on Monday, May 27, stepping off at 9:30 a.m. Capt. Tompos is the first female to serve as the Parade’s Grand Marshal.

The 2019 Parade is presented by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Elmhurst American Legion THB Post 187, the City of Elmhurst and Elmhurst Park District.

American Legion THB Post 187 is also celebrating its Centennial in 2019 (see story and photos elsewhere in this issue).

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst will again serve as Parade Marshals, assisted by Veterans from Elmhurst College, and also will march carrying their giant U.S. flag.

Ralph P. Pechanio, Chairman of the Elmhurst Veterans Memorial Commission and a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst, and John R. Quigley, president and CEO of the Elmhurst Chamber, are the Parade Co-Chairs, since 1997 and 2000, respectively.

Members of the Elmhurst Chamber will carry the presentation banner.

This year’s entries include five

color guards, retired military officers from the United States Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, members of American Legion THB Post 187 and veterans, costumed Civil War re-enactors and military vehicles. The lead color guard will feature members of the Elmhurst Police and Fire Departments.

The parade also will feature vehicles representing six fire departments (Elmhurst, Northlake, Oakbrook Terrace, Oak Brook, Villa Park and York Center District), 14 scouting groups, and 10 musical entries, along with elected leaders at the federal, state and municipal levels.

The parade will step off at 9:30 a.m. from York Road and Third Street, and concludes with a Military Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Wilder Park. Starting from Third Street, the parade will head south on York Street to Second Street, veer east along Robert Palmer Drive through the underpass and west back to York Street, south on York Street to Church Street, west on Church Street to Prospect Avenue and north on Prospect Avenue past the Veterans Memorial.

Post-Parade Memorial The 27th Annual Post-Parade Military Ceremony at the Elmhurst Veterans Memorial will feature inspirational speeches by Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley and others, the laying of wreaths by military personnel and civilians, and a traditional ThreeRound Volley.

President Lincoln rose from the obscurity of growing up in the western frontier in Kentucky and Indiana to become a lawyer in Springfield, Illinois, and then an American statesman who would become the 16th President of the United States from March of 1861 until his April 1865 assassination by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theatre while attending the play Our American Cousin.

From the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation to abolish slavery to his quintessential Gettysburg Address in 1863, President Lincoln cherished the ideals for which our republic stands: liberty and freedom, democracy, equality and opportunity.

Using only 272 words scribbled down while on a train ride to commemorate a battlefield cemetery following a significant Union victory, his three-minute Gettysburg Address defied President Lincoln’s prognostication that “the world will little note, nor long remember what we say here.”

President Lincoln stated that our great nation was born in 1776 when “conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal” and that “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth,” assuring the future of democracy in the world.

His letter to Mrs. Bixby, who lost five sons on the Union side during the Civil War, includes the following: “I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom.”

Army Captain to be Elmhurst Memorial Parade Grand Marshal The Grand Marshal for Elmhurst’s 101st Memorial Day Parade is Elmhurst resident Lori Kristine Hess Tompos, a Desert Storm and Gulf War combat veteran while serving as a United States Army Captain in Air Defense Artillery—the first female Grand Marshal in this Parade’s storied history.

“I am very appreciative and humbled by the choice to have me represent our awesome Elmhurst community in the Memorial Day Parade as the Grand Marshal,” said Capt. Tompos.

Among the first women to serve in combat, Capt. Tompos commanded a PATRIOT Missile System Battery as an artillery officer (then a Lieutenant) with the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command (AADCOM) deployed out of Germany.

Her active duty ran from May of 1989 to June of 1992, followed by service in the U.S. Army Reserves into January of 1994.

“I am proud of my service to our country,” stated Capt. Tompos, “and proud to lead the teams with which I had the privilege of working.”

Capt. Tompos also was among the first 800-some women to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (1985-89), where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree.

As the first person from her unit and her Brigade deployed to the Gulf War, Capt. Tompos was tasked with the classified “SECRET” mission of setting up a PATRIOT Missile site, as part of an advanced party that includ-

Capt. Tompos was among the few officers certified in the PATRIOT, so she was given charge of the “day shift” at the missile site, whose 150 soldiers were tasked with protecting an airbase and members of the Saudi Arabia Royal family.

Tompos attributed her “very effective” style of leadership style to the combination of “a gift from God and good training.”

In spite of her combat command, Capt. Tompos was forbidden from speaking directly to or even look eyeto-eye with the Saudi men with whom she was tasked to work.

“Being in a Combat Arms Branch and being a woman was a challenge,” said Capt. Tompos.

Capt. Tompos is both Air Assault qualified (having rappelled out of helicopters, off of cliffs and down buildings and Airborne qualified (having parachute jumped out of airplanes).

Among her military honors are two Army Commendation Awards, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service, Overseas Service, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Humanitarian Service, Kuwaiti Liberation Medal (from the Kuwaiti Government) and Kuwaiti Liberation Medal (from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), which the Saudi Arabian Royal Prince himself bestowed to her.

A proud life-time member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Elmhurst American Legion THB Post 187, Capt. Tompos is also a member of the West Point Alumni Glee Club (WPAGC), and she has had the distinct pleasure of singing at Carnegie Hall, at West Point, in Washington,

D.C., for a Veterans Benefit Concert, and most recently in Ireland, near the Ring of Kerry and Killarney, where she connected with Irish Veterans and sang in three concerts, while also serving as the Tour Director. This summer, Capt. Tompos will be the Tour Director in Ireland again, this time for the West Point Women’s Group.

Following her active military service, Capt. Tompos earned a Master of Education degree at Ohio University (1992-94) and later taught Master in Business Administration (MBA) courses on-line covering Managing Organizations, Leadership and Leading Change as a learning educator, facilitator and faculty member with Ellis University (2001-16).

While employed at Accenture from 1994 to 2001, Capt. Tompos helped lead projects, teams and groups in Change Management and Project Team Training.

Capt. Tompos has served as the CEO of Avail Consulting since 2002 and as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Business and Economics at Elmhurst College since 2015, after earning an MBA degree at EC (201314).

A resident of Elmhurst for 15 years, Capt. Tompos has volunteered her time serving on several committees at York Community High School. She is also a Mentor Mom for Mothers of Pre-Schoolers, former PTA President, Service Academy Board Member for three Congressmen, and a guest speaker on her unique experiences in the Army, empowering women.

She and her husband Stephen Tompos, an Army veteran himself, are the parents of three daughters, Laurel, Stephy and LilyAnn.

NASAO commends $779 million investment in nation’s airport infrastructure Last week, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Chao announced the intent to award $779 million in infrastructure grants to 127 airports throughout all fifty states and Puerto Rico. Funding for these grants was made possible in the FY18 Consolidated Appropriations Act., which required the FAA to give “Priority Consideration” to specific airports (smaller and more rural airports). Approximately $205 million was awarded in the first round, leaving the remaining $800 million available before the end of FY2020.

“This supplemental funding allows us to invest in important infrastructure needs at the nation’s air-

ports, especially those serving smaller and rural communities,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao. The selected airports will receive funding for construction or equipment to increase their safety, capacity, and security. The recipients of the selected grants will meet any remaining required approvals.

This supplemental funding will support many of the safety-critical airport infrastructure projects identified by State Aviation Officials as having the greatest impact on meeting local, state, and regional needs.

Selected projects include runway reconstruction and rehabilitation, and the maintenance of taxiways, aprons, and terminals.

UCCA’s Talk of the Town: Food for Life draws a crowd

Culinary enthusiasts – or foodies!

-- enjoyed a great night of food and fun on Thursday, May 16 at Wilder Mansion where United Community Concerns Association (UCCA) held its food and drink sampling event known as Taste of the Town: Food for Life.

Live music for the evening was provided by Clay Corso with a playlist arranged by Frank Intrieri.

Proceeds from the event benefit UCCA, an all-volunteer, not-forprofit organization that provides food to children and families in need who reside within the School District 205 area.

Last year, UCCA provided more than $87,000 in food and food cer-

tificates to almost 300 families.

“We work to strengthen our communities by ending hunger,” said UCCA President Susie Sands.

“Ours is a neighbors-helping-neighbors approach, driven by volunteers and empowered by a generous community of dedicated partners.”

The Committee who organized the event included not only Sands, but also co-Chairs Shari Haug and Gigi Peters, as well as Jean Baker, Casey Braun, Patty Burnette, Sue Holler, Pam Mower, Jennifer Orum, Cindy Peterson, Kent Sands and Jane Stephens-Smith.

DuPage County awards human services grants to nonprofit agencies

The DuPage County Board awarded $900,000 to local nonprofits last week through the DuPage County Human Services Grant Fund.

Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Pete DiCianni said the fund was created by the County Board to partner with agencies directly serving the needs of DuPage County residents.

“These DuPage County nonprofits provide vital community services to protect our most vulnerable populations,” he said. “This public-private partnership helps these agencies pursue additional private and public support to leverage the largest amount of money to help the most people possible. We are honored to help improve the lives of DuPage County residents through this program.”

The grants are available to organizations that help families achieve independence, ensure the protection of children and other vulnerable residents, in addition to maximizing prevention opportunities to strengthen families’ well-being and stability.

The grants range from $3,157 to $56,000. The agencies were required to be registered as a 501(c)(3), serve a broad geographical area of DuPage County and have made a substantial impact on County residents for at least three years.

Throughout its thousand-year history, the term stained glass has been applied almost exclusively to the windows of churches and other significant religious buildings.

Although traditionally made in flat panels and used as windows, our resident stained glass creations are made by using cellophane paper cut out in different shapes and forms, glued on the surface of the glass creating frosted intricacies that beam colors of the rainbow when they catch light.

On Mother’s Day, Terra Vista of Oakbrook Terrace hosted its first art show, attended by family, friends and community visitors from the surrounding area.

January brings “Mozart Magic” in a program featuring the talents of the ESO principal winds and brass.

Sung by the acclaimed Apollo Chorus of Chicago, “Bach’s Passion” takes center stage in March.

When visiting Kie&Kate Couture, you would never think this fashionable women’s boutique once started in the owner’s home, but it did. Kate Kemph was a first grade teacher when she put her career on hold to stay at home and raise her then two children. Not long after her second child was born, Kate found herself missing the creative stimulation she once utilized while teaching. She started making all the bedding and other things for her kid’s rooms. Kate had been a seamstress for a long time; she learned to sew when she was 10 years old and never put that needle down. Sewing and making things was a hobby of hers. What she didn’t know was that one day she would turn that hobby into a successful business. Kate first started making children’s clothing and hair accessories that she sold in vendor shows for Kie&Kate in 2008. People fell in love with Kate’s style of clothing and jewelry and the demand for her products grew.

What had started as a silver lining for Kate and her family during the recession turned into a big success. In September 2011, Kate opened her store front in Elmhurst with the help of her husband, Steve Kemph. At first he helped Kate with the business operations of the store, but after completing the Golden Sachs Business Program, she felt prepared to take over all aspects of the business. From the start, Kate’s underlying goal for her store has remained the same; to maintain a reasonable price point so she can be affordable to women knowledgeable of the latest fashions.

Today, Kate has 4 children, Kiely who’s 12 and shares part of the business name, Dean who is 11, Liam who is 5 and her youngest baby girl Arden is 6 months. Both Kiely and Dean have grown up around the store and have learned different parts of the business. They have also become part of Kate’s support system. This year Kie&Kate will celebrate its 8th year on Spring Road and expanded last October to a second storefront with a home and gift section. She owes her success to her support system and her employees whom she calls her team. She said, “I love my team!”

When asked what has lead to your success: Kate responded you have to have a good support system, sounding board and team. You also have to be a good listener, be genuine and be organic—let things evolve and grow on their own time. Meet Diane Kilcommons, Center Director of Huntington of Elmhurst Huntington Learning Center helps every student become the best academic version of him/herself.

Diane Kilcommons has a master’s degree in education and has taught for 35 years, including home educating her four children. Diane and her husband, Mark, have owned Huntington Learning Center for the past nine years. Huntington Learning Center helps children improve their foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling, math, and phonics. They also help students prepare for college with their individualized exam prep programs. Higher test scores mean more opportunities. When asked what inspired you to be a teacher? Diane replied, “ I believe my desire to be a teacher was a God given gift.

I cooperated with His plan for me.” At Huntington Learning Center, children gain the foundational skills they need, which in turn, gives them confidence and motivation.

In addition to managing a learning center, Diane was very active in raising her children. Her oldest daughter, Lauren, has a master’s degree from Loyola and is a school psychologist in a suburban school district. Her second daughter, Julia has a master’s degree in nursing from DePaul and is an emergency room nurse in the western suburbs. Diane‘s youngest, twin sons, Patrick and John were able to benefit greatly by attending Huntington Learning Center themselves. Currently, Pat and John are retired from football and finished their season with a nine and one record. They are graduating from Dartmouth College in June and are gainfully employed.

For those of you starting a new business, Diane had some great words of wisdom to share, “Live in the moment and enjoy the people who walk through your door. It is my mission to give every child the best education possible.”

York girls soccer team wins regional title

Dukes outscore Chicago Jones and Hinsdale Central 5-2 to bring home crown

The York girls soccer team went to the hardware store in Hinsdale.

And the Dukes came away with a Class 3A regional title after downing Chicago Jones 3-1 in the championship game at Hinsdale Central.

The win pushed York to 11-7-1 overall and sent the Dukes to this week’s Class 3A Glenbard East sectional in Lombard.

The Dukes played Chicago Whitney Young earlier this week in the sectional semifinals. If York won that game, it will play for the sectional title at Glenbard East on Saturday at 11 a.m.

York reached the final with a 2-1 win over host Hinsdale Central. Maya Rebic had a goal assisted by Katelyn Winton and Megan Hanebuth scored the other goal with an assist from Maddie Jeffery.

After the Hinsdale Central win, Bridget Los was leading the team in scoring with nine goals and eight assists. Greta Roy had five goals and three assists, while Rebic had four goals and five assists. Riley Haug had six goals and five assists.

Coach Stevan Dobric noted on the York roster of 21 players that includes 18 field players, 14 of them have either one goal and/or one assist.

“Since mid-April, we have scored in every match we have played in,”

Dobric pointed out. “Many players have been doing a great job of finding the back of the net and keeping us competitive in all matches that we have been playing.”

York’s defense also has taken steps forward. “Our defensive shape has improved immensely,” said Dobric. “As a whole, we have been defending much better as a team and making it difficult for teams to break us down.”

To that point, Dobric cited strong play from Siena Pinkerton, Allie Milkowski and goalie Kathleen Levins. “Siena, Allie and Kathleen have done a fantastic job leading the backline and keeping the team organized,” he said. “Their ability to communicate and cover space has been fantastic. Limiting chances throughout the last stretch of games has led to overall success.”

Dobric said another trump card for the Dukes has been the mental side of their game. “The team has tremendous confidence and a positive attitude, and for the rest of the playoffs we will keep building upon this,” he said.

“Every game the girls leave what they have on the field. As a coach, I cannot ask for anything more, and they have exceeded all my expectations from the start of the season. I could not be any more proud of the girls and the hard work they have put in this season.”

York boys tennis posts all-conference performances at WSC Silver meet Three doubles teams finish third; Dukes double win total

The York boys tennis team earned three all-conference designations at the recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet.

The York No. 2 doubles team of TJ Paul and Sam Wit finished third, while the No. 3 doubles team of Jalen Macatangay and Leander Grasmeier also took third. The No. 4 doubles team of Jack Condon and Charlie Julian was third as well. These three doubles teams were named to the all-WSC Silver team for their performances at the conference meet.

York competed in the recent Lyons Township sectional. The Dukes did

not have any state qualifiers.

York finished the season 12-13 overall and went 2-4 in WSC Silver Division duals. York was 6-18 a year ago.

“We have definitely improved our record going from 6-18 last year to 12-13 this year,” York coach Courtney Bison said. “The boys have become more competitive.”

York’s sectional roster at Lyons Township included singles players Austin Taylor (No. 1 singles for York) and Max Damewood (No. 2 singles for York), along with the doubles teams of Luke Brigman and Gage Burkhardt (No. 1 doubles for York) and Paul and Wit (No. 2 doubles for York).

Bison was impressed this season with the senior leadership of the team. “Our seniors were fantastic leaders,” she said.

Timothy Christian junior Hope Clark finished 10th in the state in the 3,200 run at the recent Class 1A girls track and field state finals at Eastern Illinois University. Clark clocked in at 12:07.32.

Elise Terpstra finished seventh in her heat of the triple jump with a mark of 32-9 3/4. She also was seventh in her preliminary heat of the

800 with a time of 2:27.01.

Maggie Troxel was eighth in her preliminary heat of the 100 hurdles with a time of 19.67. Campbell Marshall also competed in the high jump.

The freshmen ruled the day for IC Catholic Prep’s girls track team at the recent Class 1A state finals meet.

Freshman Kennedy Calcagno finished fifth in the state in the 800 and 1,600 runs, while classmate Carly Manchester was fifth in the 3,200 and 11th in the 1,600 runs.

Calcagno took fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:20.45, lower than her Friday preliminary time. She also clocked in at 5:19.19 in the 1,600, much lower than her prelim finish.

Manchester was fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:37.23 and 11th in the 1,600 with a time of 5:32.34.

Manchester took fourth in her preliminary heat of the 1,600 with a time of 5:26.06, while Calcagno was right behind her at 5:26.20.

Calcagno was third in her preliminary heat of the 800 at 2:21.32 and qualified for the finals. Both Calcagno and Manchester also ran on IC Catholic Prep’s 1,600 relay team at

state the first day.

Sophomore Alia Johnson was fourth in her preliminary heat of the long jump at 16-11. She also took fifth in her preliminary heat of the 400 at 1:02.49.

Jaida Smith took eighth in her preliminary heat of the long jump with a mark of 16-1. Hannah Johnson was fifth in her preliminary round of the triple jump at 34-0 1/4.

The Timothy Christian girls soccer team had its season come to an end with a 6-0 loss to Lisle in the championship game of the Class 1A Lisle sectional.

The Trojans reached the sectional final after a 4-1 win over Chicago Noble/Mansueto in the semifinals at Lisle.

In the win against Noble/Mansueto, Emma Carter had two goals and eight shots on goal. Sarah Carstensen had one goal. Ella VanderMolen also had a goal, while Sophie Labuda and Sarah Stoll each had one assist. Goalie Angel Burke made four saves.

After the Noble/Mansueto game, Carter was leading the team in goals with 20. Carstensen had 13. Carter and

Carstensen were tied for the team lead in assists with seven each. Burke had 106 saves and a .841 save percentage.

“A lot of our play goes through Emma,” said Timothy coach Jon Hamelinck. “She has been the backbone of our team this year, and she’s had a phenomenal year for us.”

Timothy coach Jon Hamelinck said one major improvement toward the end of the season was the team’s defense. “Our defense has been getting stronger and stronger,” he said. “They play a lot of big minutes for us and their confidence continues to grow with each game.

“Our entire backline of Sophia Biscan, Jana Kunz, Celeste Vandermeer and Elena Munk has grown together as a unit and they continue to earn the trust of their coaches.”

In terms of what has improved the most, Hamelinck said the team was playing with ‘width’ well. “Our attack has been more concerted and the girls

are getting a better understanding of where everyone is going to be, and visualizing how to attack various defenses.”

Hamelinck added the team has been working hard on finishing scoring chances. “We generate a lot of opportunities,” he said. “We just have to be more efficient at finishing them off.”

Team chemistry also counted for plenty for the Trojans. “They genuinely like being around each other,” said Hamelinck. “This team doesn’t really get into the drama that you’d expect with 21 high school girls being around each other six days a week. They work hard and have fun with each other. Cliché things for a coach to say, but it’s been true of this group. I have really enjoyed coaching this team and seeing how they’ve grown over the past couple months.”

The Trojans finished the season 114-1 and went 4-2 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

Dukes start state playoffs this week

York boys lacrosse coach Don Canfield noted that through the team’s first 19 contests of the season, it had its fair share of close contests.

One that went the Dukes way was a recent 4-3 overtime victory against Chicago St. Rita. “Playing hard for the full 48 minutes is crucial for us to win games against good teams,” said Canfield. “That was the fifth game where we were tied or winning this season and the first to go home victorious.”

York was 15-7 through late last week. Other recent results included a 9-5 loss to Culver Academy, an 11-7

win over previously unbeaten South Elgin, a 12-4 win against St. Ignatius and a 6-5 loss in double overtime to Fenwick.

In the St. Rita contest, Charlie Toreja had a .750 faceoff percentage.

Joey Cornell had a .770 save percentage with 10 saves in goal and Harrison Proud had two goals and one assist.

Through 19 games, Proud had 33 goals and 18 assists. Maston had 23 goals and 19 assists, while Sam Walsh had 103 ground balls.

Canfield also has been impressed with the team’s possessions of late.

“We have seen improvement with quality long possessions,” he said.

“We have not been scoring a lot of goals, but we have had a lot of great long offensive possessions that put pressure on the opposing defense

and that limits the opposing team’s possessions.”

Canfield said York continues to work to improve on the offensive end of the field. “We still need to work on scoring more goals,” he said.

Wil Owens and Chase McNeil have provided York a jolt in the defensive midfield this season. “Wil and Chase have been playing outstanding defensive midfield for us all season,” said Canfield. “It is often a position that players do not get a lot of recognition, but their contributions on the field are a huge reason for our success. They are shutdown defenders, pick up a lot of ground balls and push the ball in transition.”

York started the IHSA state playoffs earlier this week at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst at the IC Catholic Prep sectional.

Timothy Christian boys tennis team qualifies five for state tournament Trojans runners-up at Montini sectional

The Timothy Christian boys tennis team had a banner day at the Class A Montini sectional in Lombard.

The Trojans finished second as a team with 21 points behind host Montini’s first-place 24-point output.

More importantly, Timothy qualified five players for this weekend’s state finals meet in the Northwest suburbs.

Timothy freshman singles player Winston Chen qualified for state after taking third in the singles tournament. Chen won his opener 7-5, 6-1 against Lemont and won 6-2, 6-1 against Nazareth Academy in the second round. Chen lost 6-0, 6-0 to Montini in the third round and then came back to defeat another Lemont player 6-2, 6-2 in the third-place match.

Timothy also qualified both its doubles teams for state. Seniors Jack Rhiner and James Shervheim finished second, while senior Ben Rowell and junior Michah Bosman took fourth.

Rhiner and Shervheim won 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 in their opener against Nazareth Academy and then won 6-1, 6-1 in the second round against Providence. Rhiner and Shervheim won 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 against Lemont and then dropped a 6-3, 6-3 match to an-

other Nazareth team in the final.

Rowell and Bosman won their first match 6-2, 6-3 against Walther Christian and won their second match 6-3, 6-2 against Joliet Catholic. They lost 6-0, 6-4 to Nazereth Academy and 7-6, 6-3 to Lemont in the third-place match.

Timothy finished the dual-meet portion of the season with an 11-5 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Metro Suburban Conference action.

The Trojans tied for second at the recent MSC tournament. The Timothy No. 3 doubles team of seniors Payton Ward and Christian Morrow took second at the conference meet with a dramatic comeback win against St. Francis, winning the third-set tiebreak 12-10. They earned all-conference honors.

The No. 2 doubles team of Bosman and Rowell also took second at the league meet and earned all-conference accolades. Bosman and Rowell finished the regular season at 15-4 with two of those losses to the top-16 team in the state from Wheaton Academy.

Senior Matt Van Zeelt has alternated between doubles and singles all season and has filled in at a number of positions when players have been hurt or sick.

He finished his high school career with a 16-5 overall record this season.

York boys water polo team reaches sectional final Dukes finish season with 23 wins

The York boys water polo team concluded its season after a 14-8 loss to Fenwick in the championship game of the Fenwick sectional in Oak Park.

York reached the sectional final thanks to a 13-8 win over Oak Park-River Forest in the semifinals.

The Dukes ended the year 23-9 overall and finished 5-2 in West Suburban Conference play.

“I’m really proud of our season,” said York coach Brian Drumm. “Fenwick was a tough match in the sectionals and I felt we played them well for most of the game. Both levels of our program made it to the conference final and our varsity team was one game away from qualifying for the state tournament.”

Carson Hicks finished with 88 goals, seven assists and 41 steals for the Dukes. Isaac Marlott had 76 goals, 57 assists and 102 steals. Jay Jensen had 64 goals, 54 assists and 59 steals. Will Yasdick had 32 goals, 20 assists and 24 steals. Andrew Hausoul had 31 goals, 22 assists and 35 steals. Nick Ward ended with 29 goals, 25 steals and 15 assists. Jacob Dunlap had 21 goals, 27 assists and 16 assists. Robby Lothian made 190 saves and had 24 steals.

Drumm said York made big strides over the course of the season with

its post game. “Carson did a great job figuring out how to hold position and our perimeter players became much better passers into set,” he explained. “Nick Ward was our secondary center, and he was really skilled at earning ejections once the ball was placed into him.”

Drumm said a game that stood out for him was the WSC final against Lyons Township. “Andrew (Hausoul) was in foul trouble so we put Jacob Dunlap on the LT center Victor Perez,” the coach said. “Victor was voted player of the year last year in Illinois, so it was no easy task, but we felt Jacob really held his own against him. This opened a lot up for us at the end of the season. We felt that we had another player who could defend most anyone in the state. The exciting thing is that both Jacob and Andrew are sophomores, so our defense will have a strong core for the next few years.”

Drumm said the future looks bright for the Dukes. “We are returning a good number of field players next year so we’re hoping to continue developing our offense in a way that highlights those players’ strengths,” he said.

On the awards front, Marlott, Hicks and Jensen were named to the all-WSC first team, while Hausoul was named to the second team.

Marlott and Hicks were all-sectional first-team picks. Jensen was all-sectional second team and Hausoul, Ward and Yasdick were all-sectional honorable mention.

Munn said Modica, a sophomore, has stepped her game up at the plate, while Fugslang has enjoyed a “great season” after missing last season with a knee injury.

“Madline has really stepped it up with her bat and is making a huge impact,” said Munn.

Catcher Rena Sotos also has been a key driver. “Rena has been doing great behind the plate for us and stepping up to hit,” said Munn.

Karnatz was leading the team with 47 hits in only 78 at-bats. Fugslang had 41 hits in 89 at-bats. Karnatz was the team leader with nine doubles.

Smith had eight doubles, while Julia Derkowski and Fugslang each had seven.

Fugslang was tops in triples with five, while Karnatz had four, as did Gina Westphal through late last week.

Smith was the team leader in home runs with six. Karnatz had five, while Lauren Derkowski and Westphal each had four. York hit 22 home runs as a team through late last week.

Smith was leading the team in RBI with 26, while Fugslang had 24 and Westphal 22.

Karnatz was tops in runs scored with 43. Fugslang had 34 runs scored. Karnatz also was leading the team with 15 walks. Karnatz was leading in stolen bases with 24, while Fugslang had 17.

Lauren Derkowski had 211 strikeouts in 107 innings pitched, while allowing only 80 hits and issuing only 27 walks. She had a 2.42 ERA through late last week.

York softball team ties for second in conference

The York softball team finished the West Suburban Conference Silver Division portion of its schedule on a high note.

The Dukes were victorious against Oak Park-River Forest and Lyons Township to finish 9-3 in the league and in a tie for second place with OPRF. In the game against Lyons Township, pitcher Lauren Derkowski allowed only one hit and two runs over seven innings, while striking out 17.

Izzy Smith had an RBI single in the first inning. York put up four runs in the sixth inning. Madline Modica and Derkowski each had singles, while Sydney Fugslang had a double.

York had 11 hits in the game. Fugslang, Modica and Smith each had multiple hits with Fugslang going 3-for-4.
