Person charged in Elmhurst University incident Police: Student admits making false report, never saw anyone with gun

In its May 6 issue, the Elmhurst Independent reported on an incident that took place on the campus of Elmhurst University on Wednesday, April 28.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. that day, the Elmhurst Police Department responded to a call that a man was on

campus with a gun. The campus was placed on lock-down and systematically checked by responding Elmhurst police officers and Elmhurst University Public Safety staff. No threat was located and the lock-down was lifted at approximately 6 p.m.

The police investigation subsequently revealed that an Elmhurst Uni-

versity student had met with a male in a University parking lot earlier that day. Police said the student later admitted to investigators that he acquired methamphetamine from the man without paying an agreed-upon price and then fled the area on foot.

During a follow-up interview, the student admitted that he called the El-

mhurst University Public Safety Office making a false report that a male had a gun on campus. The student admitted that he never saw anyone with a gun.

On Monday, May 10, the student, Darnel Baalbaki, 25, of Bellwood, was charged with Felony Disorderly Conduct – False Crime Report. Bond was set at $25,000 with 10% to apply.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Obituary William G. Doan, 84 Long-time owner of Doan Realty William G. Doan, of Dixon, formerly of Elmhurst, passed away on Wednesday, March 10 at KSB Medical Center in Dixon. William was born May 31, 1936 in Tonti, the son of George Edward and Vivian (Risinger) Doan. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a graduate of Northern Illinois University (NIU).

On Aug. 25, 1962, he married Phyllis Maass at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn.

He was very active and pursued many careers. He was an accountant for one of the top Chicago accounting firms, owned Doan Real

Estate in Elmhurst, along with his wife, owned a travel agency and was a chef at three restaurants. William was very involved with the Elmhurst YMCA, where he ran auctions. He helped with AAUW in Elmhurst and helped his wife out, who was very active with the Girl Scouts, also running auctions. He was a member of the Elmhurst Jaycees, the Dixon Elks Club and the First United Methodist Church in Dixon.

William and his wife lived in numerous locations, starting in Glen Ellyn, then moved to Oak Park for two years, then Elmhurst for 30 years.

They also lived in Missouri, Florida (where they mostly played), then moved back to Missouri, then Ohio,

and Illinois, where they eventually found their way to Dixon.

Survivors include his wife Phyllis of Dixon; one daughter Elizabeth (Donna) Doan or Maricopa, Ariz.; one son, Bryan (Karen) Doan of Elmhurst; two sisters, Kay Campbell of West Chicago and Jane Golchert of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.; one brother-in-law William Maass of Minnesota; and four grandchildren, Joseph and Dominic Doan of Maricopa, Ariz., and Steven and Megan Doan of Elmhurst. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

There will be no services at this time. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation rites

have been accorded. Memorials may be made directly to the First United Methodist Church of Dixon or your favorite charity of choice in William’s name. Memorials may also be

sent to Schilling Funeral Home, P.O. Box 592, Sterling, IL 61081 and will be forwarded to the family. Condolences may also be sent to schillingfuneralhome.com.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White encourages children to practice safe bike riding and to remember to follow the Bicycle Rules of the Road as May marks Bicycle Safety Month. White also reminded motorists to be aware of sharing the roads with bicyclists, especially children.

Superior Ambulance celebrates EMS Week Company salutes those who provide emergency medical services

Superior Ambulance Services is celebrating its own emergency medical services staff for EMS Week.

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are required on all ambulance calls and Superior management wanted to show appreciation to those who work in this career and face uncertain circumstances on every run.

A career as an EMT can be quite rewarding and the job will always be in demand. Superior offers its own EMT classes, making it a good place to begin a career. The teachers offer dynamic, hands-on instruction along with their own personal passion and experience, to prepare aspiring EMTs in their new ventures.

Every ambulance – on wheels or under chopper blades – is required to have EMTs. As pictured here, Superior often sends an ambulance to a community event like this one in Berens Park. Northlake to Elmhurst. For me, Elmhurst was a big change and this move set my future in motion in a way I never expected.

“When I was at York Community High School, I joined a few athletic teams, sadly due to an injury I also spent a bunch of time in the training room where I started working with them as a student trainer. It was during this time that I realized I wanted to go into healthcare.

“After graduating York in 2001, I went to COD and started taking an EMT-Basic program. After earning

my EMT certification from COD, I applied to work for Superior Ambulance. There was always something about Superior that stood out to me as a new graduate over the other companies. It may have been because I knew they had roots in Elmhurst and that they provide paramedics to the City of Elmhurst.

“Superior provided me several opportunities, I can’t even name them all. These included sponsorship to paramedic school, critical care training and career advancements. Most of my work with Supe-

rior has been in Elmhurst, working as a paramedic and now leadership.

“My dad is still a resident of Elmhurst today. He loves to tell stories about the exciting things I’m doing at Superior, whether it’s trying to find me on the sideline of a Chicago Bears football game or calling to see if I was in the ambulance he just saw drive past. There is a comfort to know that if something happens to him in the town, there is a great team of paramedics from our Metro Paramedic division that will be there to take care of him.”

Bond set for Naperville North coach accused of possession of child pornography

On Thursday, May 13, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Robert Marshall announced that bond had been set for a former Naperville North High School assistant boys basketball coach accused of possessing child pornography. Jelani McClain, 23, of

McClain has been charged with seven counts of Posses- Jelani McClain sion of Child Pornography, a Class 2 Felony.

Through the course of their continuing efforts into child pornography, investigators from the Naperville Police Department received a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding an IP address possibly engaging in child pornography. Based upon this information, detectives obtained a search warrant for McClain’s home which was executed on May 12. It is alleged that a search of McClain’s electronic storage yielded several images and videos of child por-

nography. McClain, who was at home during the search, was immediately taken into custody without incident.

“As I have said many times in the past, child pornography is not a victimless crime,” Berlin said.

“Each one of these disgusting images represents yet another victim of child pornography. The charges filed against Mr. McClain today sends the message that my office will aggressively pursue child pornographers.”

McClain’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 10, for arraignment in front of Judge O’Hallaren Walsh.

May 9 A 55-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 300 block of S. Argyle at around 7:02 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a verbal argument, the suspect struck the victim.

Matthew R. Mills, 28, of Bensenville, was charged with DUI, speeding, improper lane usage, failure to signal and failure to yield to emergency vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 2:09 a.m.

May 9 Olivia Palumbo, 19, of Addison, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and disobeying a stop sign subsequent to a traffic stop near Spring and Madison at around 12:45 a.m.

Police said a reporting officer located a vehicle near Hampshire and Webster at around 6:10 a.m. that was reported stolen out of Stone Park. Officers made contact with the driver who was placed under arrest without incident.

A search of the vehicle yielded a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. Charges are pending.

May 7 Giovani Sanchez, 22, of Chicago, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Clinton at around 7:33 p.m.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery May 12 Attempted residential burglary was reported in the 700 block of S. Euclid at around 12:15 p.m. Police said a reporting officer met with the complainant who stated an unknown suspect described as an Hispanic male approached her home requesting to check her electrical outlets. The complainant walked the

May 4-May 11 A victim in the 300 block of Ridgeland told police at around 5:03 p.m. that she received an email from an unknown suspect indicating an order was being processed for the purchase of a computer. She called the provided phone number, advised the suspect she did not place the order, and provided her bank account information to be reimbursed. The unknown suspect stated he refunded too much and asked the victim to ship and wire transfer funds to him.

May 9 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 9:46 p.m. A complainant told police that the suspect concealed three bottles of bourbon in his waistband, walked past the last point of sale, and was stopped by security just prior to exiting the store. The liquor was recovered by security and the suspect—described as a black male around 25 years old—fled the scene in a black, four-door vehicle.

May 7-May 8 Theft from a vehicle was reported in the 200 block of S. Poplar. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed the catalytic converter from his vehicle while it was parked in the driveway overnight.

May 6 Fraud was reported in the 100 block of E. North at around 8:05 a.m. A victim reported he was contacted by an unknown suspect who was willing to provide the victim with a loan.

The victim gave his banking information and Social Security number to the suspect. The victim is not out any money and reported the incident to his bank.

May 5 A reporting officer met with the complainant at a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 who reported missing a laptop belonging to her employer. The complainant stated she last had the laptop while shopping at the above location. The reporting officer reviewed security footage which showed the complainant was in possession of the laptop as she exited the store.

Identity theft was reported in the 700 block of S. Washington. A victim stated an unknown suspect attempted to use his personal information to purchase a vehicle and rent a property in Georgia. The victim has not lost any money and has placed a freeze on his credit.

April 28 Theft by deception was reported in the 100 block of E. Van Buren at around 5:30 p.m. Police said the victim posted a painting for sale on eBay. The suspect sent a check to the victim and advised the victim the overage was to be paid to the movers for transporting the painting. The victim sent funds to Cash App for the transportation fees. The victim later learned the check had not cleared.

April 1-April 2 A vehicle was reported stolen from an auto dealership in the 300 block of W. Grand. A reporting officer met with the complainant who reported a 2021 GMC Acadia was missing from their inventory sometime between the above dates. The complainant believes a former employee took the vehicle when he quit his job at the dealership. The victim further stated employees observed the vehicle parked in the suspect’s driveway. This case is pending investigation.

DuPage County COVID-19 vaccine providers begin vaccinating children ages 12-15

Several healthcare vaccine providers throughout DuPage County were planning to open COVID-19 vaccinations to children ages 12 to 15 years old.

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) was expected to open vaccinations to this age group on Monday, May 17. Parents can begin to register their 12- to 15-year-old children at dupagehealth.org/covid19vaccineregistration to schedule an appointment with the DCHD. For vaccine providers beginning vaccinations tomorrow, visit www. dupagehealth.org/covid19vaccine.

“Vaccinating our adolescents is a high priority and will be critical in our efforts to put an end to this pandemic and protect the health and well-being of our residents,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of DuPage County Health Department. “The studies show this vaccine is safe and highly effective in children. We encourage parents to get themselves and their eligible children vaccinated as soon as they are able. Vaccinations will help protect our children and get them back to their friends and activities they love.”

As of May 12, about 42 percent, or 388,951, of DuPage County residents have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Of the DuPage County residents currently eligible, 64 percent, or 473,780, have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. Additionally, 91 percent of DuPage County residents ages 65 years and older have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose.

Last week, more than 57,000 vaccine doses were administered into the arms of DuPage County residents for a total of 862,731doses administeredto date.

In addition to the DCHD Vaccination Clinic’s weekday and Saturday hours, DCHD began offering evening hours on Thursday nights for individuals who may need evening options.

Walk-ins are welcome Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday 11:30 a.m. to6:30 p.m., and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Although no appointment is necessary, preregistration is encouraged to save time.

When registering, the form will provide an opportunity to indicate you require homebound services. To date, DCHD staff and paramedics have vaccinated 67 individuals at home.

The DCHD continues to work toward achieving the goal of vaccinating 80percent of eligible DuPage County residents by July 1. To help do so, DCHD is partnering with municipalities, businesses, and community-based organizations to bring smaller COVID-19 vaccine clinics closer to individuals who have not yet been vaccinated.

Cullerton spearheads measure to restore benefits to LGBTQ+ veterans State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D- Villa Park) is fighting to restore benefits to veterans who were subject to an “other than honorable” discharge from the military for their sexual orientation or gender identity.

“Those who valiantly served their country should be honored with benefits no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity,” said Cullerton, chair of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. “This measure will be a step toward undoing the discrimination the LGBTQ+ community has historically faced in the military.”

According to a 2020 report from Harvard Law School, more than 100,000 service members were expelled from the military between World War II and the 2011 repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” – the policy that barred gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation. These discharges

were considered OTH, which kept these service members from receiving state and federal benefits.

House Bill 1290 would change a person’s OTH discharge to an honorable discharge if their OTH discharge was solely due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. This would allow people discharged for this reason to begin receiving state veterans benefits.

“Despite the repeal of the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy a decade ago, LGBTQ+ veterans are still unnecessarily facing the struggles of being denied benefits,” said Cullerton, who is a veteran himself. “It’s time we restore these benefits to these individuals who so rightfully deserve them.”

The measure passed the Senate Veterans Affairs committee and will now move to the floor for a full vote in the Senate.

Glowiak Hilton moves to renew tax credit for affordable housing donations To encourage support of affordable housing projects, State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) advanced legislation to renew the state’s tax credit program and steadily increase benefits over time.

“The Illinois Affordable Housing Tax Credit has been instrumental in the development and preservation of affordable housing across the state over the last two decades,” Glowiak Hilton. “With its renewal, Illinois stays committed to the public and private partnerships needed to provide ongoing economic activity in communities.”

Each fiscal year, the state caps the amount for the Illinois Affordable Housing Tax Credit (IAHTC) program, which is scheduled to sunset Dec. 31, 2021. Glowiak Hilton’s proposal would extend the sunset for five years and cap the credit amount at $32.85 million for the next two fiscal years. The cap would steadily

increase by 5% each year after.

The IAHTC gives a 50-cent state income tax credit for every dollar contributed to a qualified affordable housing project. Donations must total at least $10,000, and project sponsors must be nonprofit organizations with a mission to construct or rehabilitate affordable housing.

“By renewing the IAHTC program, our state is working to ensure nonprofit sponsors have access to resources to rehabilitate buildings and construct affordable homes for renters and homebuyers,” Glowiak Hilton. “This credit supports a more flexible affordable housing approach that allows donors to support projects that meet community needs.”

House Bill 3107 passed the Senate Revenue Committee Wednesday and moves for further consideration before the full Senate.

Cancer hasn’t stopped. So neither have we. Every year, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network brings cancer survivors and advocates to the state capitol to let lawmakers know that preventing suffering and death from cancer must be a top priority. Although we could not attend in person this year, my fellow advocates and I recently held a virtual day of action where we called on lawmakers to make fighting cancer a top priority.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a regular meeting on Tuesday, May 11 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven board members attended the meeting.

There were no public comments.

Students honored for ‘Reflections’ program The meeting included a recognition of the four district students who advanced to the national competition of the National PTA’s Reflections program.

The arts program asks children to create works of art in any of six different categories, reflecting on a different theme each year. The theme of the 2020-21 school year was “I Matter Because.”

Projects advance through a judging system through council, district, region, state and national levels of the program. The district students who advanced to the Reflections program’s national competition during the current school year are: Shea Coleman (Hawthorne Elementary School), Evan Seiler (Field Elementary School), Elsie Proctor (Conrad Fischer Elementary School) and Charles Connor (Lincoln Elementary School). Shea Coleman’s submission in the Film Production category—”Dream Matters”—received an award of merit at the national competition.

Bialk overviews technology department, needs for future The May 11 meeting included a presentation from RJ Bialk, the district’s executive director of technology. Bialk provided an overview of the District 205 Technology Department. He also outlined the plan for the upcoming 2021-22 school year to provide new devices to each district student entering Grade 1, Grade 5 and Grade 9. Bialk said those students will use the same devices for four school years. He said each of the devices will have an expected useful life of four years. Each device issued to students entering Grade 1, Grade 5 and Grade 9 will be issued a charger, which they will be responsible for over the ensuing four school years.

Bialk said that district students entering first grade (approximately 600 students) in the 2021-22 school year will receive an iPad valued at about $400. Each student entering fifth grade in the coming school year (projected at nearly 650 students) will be issued a Chromebook valued at $465.

Each student entering their freshman year at York High School (about 650 students) in the 2021-22 school year will also receive a Chromebook valued at $465. The Chromebooks for incoming freshmen at York will not be identical to those being issued to students entering fifth grade.

Bialk said that all district students in grades 3-12 will continue to use Chromebooks during the 2021-22 school year. The district’s early-childhood, kindergarten, firstgrade and second-grade students will continue using iPads.

Bialk said the district will collect all issued devices from students at the end of the current 2020-21 school year. Those devices will be wiped, reconfigured and redistributed for the 2021-22 school year to students who aren’t entering Grade 1, Grade 5 and Grade 9.

Bialk noted that another update for the 2021-22 school year involved the second phase of a printer upgrade.

The district will lease an additional 34 Konica Minolta multi-function printers during the upcoming school year.

Official vote to decommission, demolish Lincoln School Board members voted unanimously during the meeting to approve a resolution authorizing the decommission and demolition of Lincoln Elementary School at the end of the current school year. The demolition is scheduled to take place in June.

The new Lincoln Elementary School will be built at the same site. The new school is scheduled to open at the start of the 2022-23 school year.

Three-year agreement approved with Teachers Council The board also voted unanimously to approve a three-year agreement between the board and Elmhurst Teachers’ Council (Local 571, American Federation of Teachers) for the period of July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2024. Board member Jim Collins, who is the board’s finance chair, stated that, on average, teachers will receive a 1.2-percent annual increase

to their base pay in each of the three years of the contract. The Elmhurst Teachers’ Council reportedly ratified the agreement on April 27.

Just before board members voted to approve the agreement with the Elmhurst Teachers’ Council, District 205 Board President Kara Caforio read the following statement—a joint statement from the board and the teachers’ union.

tional Federation of Teachers/American Federation of Teachers). The agreement covers the period from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2025. The PSRP ratified the agreement on April 23.

Collins noted that the PSRP includes the district’s administrative assistants, secretaries and aides to students. He said the new contract included annual raises between 2.5 percent and 4.5 percent. Collins, who referred to the PSRP employees as the district’s “unsung heroes,” stated that the lowest-paid workers covered by the contract will receive the highest raises. All of the workers included in the agreement will make at least $15 an hour more than one year before Illinois’ minimum wage reaches $15 an hour in 2025.

Updated discussion of COVID-19 metrics The meeting also included a discussion of COVID-19 metrics and factors. Dr. Linda Yonke, the district’s interim superintendent, said that the district is required to adhere to certain rules. Those rules include wearing masks and following quarantine procedures. Yonke said that if the district doesn’t follow those mandates, its schools could be closed by the state.

Yonke said the district continues to advocate for changes, particularly regarding rules related to quarantines.

She stated that less than 1 percent of quarantined students tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus. She also said that a lot of the district’s students who quarantined never became ill.

District arranging vaccine clinics for youths Yonke also said there had been very few cases of COVID-19 among the district’s staff members since vaccinations became available. She also said that the district is working arranging vaccine clinics for students.

Yonke said that of about 4,700 district students who had to quarantine because of rules related to COVID-19, only 13 tested positive for the coronavirus.

Yonke also said that the district is discontinuing saliva testing for the remainder of the school year.

She said that most positive cases of COVID-19 from the district’s students are indicated after those students visit a doctor because of illness. Yonke said that two weeks ago, 25 district students reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus, but only four cases were detected through the saliva screening process. Yonke said that in the past week, 19 students tested positive for the coronavirus, but only three cases were detected through the saliva screening.

The district will only pay for the saliva tests conducted, noted Yonke in responding to a question from Collins. Yonke said the district stopped the screenings sooner than the time it contracted for, and will pay substantially less than the maximum amount specified in its contract.

Created in honor of ECCI’s 100th Anniversary in 2018, the NFP’s oneof-a-kind $250K Capital Campaign has raised some $275K for the Ralph P. Pechanio Student Internship Endowment Fund at Elmhurst University versus a goal of $150K, exceeded the Second Century Fund’s $50K goal and collected more than $10K towards the $50K Civic HOF goal since 2016.

Since its creation in 1992 as part of the Opening Ceremonies at Elmfest, the Civic HOF has inducted 28 businesspeople, community volunteers and elected officials, including Pechanio as the 2015 inductee.

Since Elmfest’s end in 2009, inductees have been honored at ECCI’s Annual Awards Gala in all but one of those years.

‘Restore Illinois’ Bridge Phase begins toward June 11 reopening Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) confirmed that on Thursday, May 13, the entire state would move into the Bridge Phase of the Restore Illinois reopening plan.

The Bridge Phase is the final step before the full reopening of Phase 5.

Under Bridge Phase, there are expanded capacity limits for businesses, dining, offices, events, conferences and gatherings. Barring any significant reversals in key COVID-19 statewide indicators, including increasing hospitalizations, Illinois could enter Phase 5 as soon as June 11.

The state will continue to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance on mask-wearing in Phase 5.

“Illinoisans have worked so hard over the past year and a half to keep their families and neighbors safe, and reaching Bridge Phase means that we’re closer than ever to a return to normalcy,” said Gov. Pritzker. “To

keep up this progress, I urge every eligible Illinoisan – now including 12 to 15-year-olds – to get vaccinated as soon as possible.”

More than 10.3 million vaccine doses have been administered to Illinoisans at mass vaccination sites, local health departments, pharmacies, federally-qualified health centers, mobile clinics, and other locations across the state. Doctors’ offices are starting to administer vaccine to their patients.

As of Friday, May 14, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is available to youth ages 12 through 17 years after the CDC on Wednesday, May 12 accepted the recommendation from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to expand the use of the vaccine. The Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are authorized for those 18 years of age and older.

“The more people who are vaccinated, now including our youth as young as 12-years-old, the quicker we can end this pandemic,” said IDPH

Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. “While more than 62 percent of adults in Illinois have received at least one dose of the vaccine, we still need more people to get vaccinated. Please talk with your doctor or health care provider if you have questions about the vaccine and know the facts so that you can make the most informed decision.”

IDPH will continue to monitor the number of ICU hospital beds that are available, the number of patients who are hospitalized with COVID-19, and the number of people being newly admitted to the hospital because of COVID-19-like-illness. Should the state see a significant increase in deaths, hospitalizations, and the number of people being admitted to the hospital because of COVID-19, the state will remain in the Bridge Phase instead of moving to Phase 5.

Fashion comes to hospital’s aid

High-end fashion designer comes through during hospital gown shortage

The healthcare workers on the COVID-19 units at Edward Hospital in Naperville and Elmhurst Hospital got a high-fashion boost this year when a renowned designer created isolation gowns for them to wear during a shortage of PPE (personal protective equipment).

Mac Duggal, known for creating special occasion gowns, shifted focus to medical isolation gowns after he was contacted by Edward-Elmhurst Health CEO Mary Lou Mastro.

“We were running out of isolation gowns,” Mastro said. “I was starting to panic. I cold called (Duggal) and said, ‘You’ve never met me, but our sons know each other. I always thought I’d call you some day to make my Mother-ofthe-Groom dress, but we’re running out of isolation gowns. Is there any way you can create some?’”

Duggal said he would do whatever he could to help healthcare workers.

“Lou was highly engaged in our efforts to find unconventional or alternative sources of products,” said Matthew Hess, system director of supply chain for Edward-Elmhurst Health.

The hospital system typically purchases and uses about 50,000 isolation gowns per month, Hess said. When COVID-19 hit, Edward-Elmhurst Health used its monthly quantity of gowns in a single week.

Because isolation gowns were placed on allocation by their manufacturer, the health system was unable to purchase quantities in excess of its baseline utilization, leaving it with a sizeable shortfall to address. This led system staff to look at purchasing isolation gowns

“As soon as (Mastro) approached us about it, we did a lot of research to make sure it was a high-quality product and very effective to keep people safe,” Duggal said. “When you have a good product by your side, you can focus on your job.”

Amidst a shortage of material and high demand, Duggal searched for the best non-woven material to use for the gowns, which must be impenetrable by liquid and strong enough to resist tears.

“It took a little while to find good fabric, but my whole team went to work,” Duggal said. “We knew we had no choice, because this was

needed fast.”

Logistics prove to be an obstacle Trade was also a problem — flights were cancelled, ships weren’t being loaded. Duggal found space on a ship and had his gowns shipped to the United States from China.

“We swapped out evening gowns and put the gowns for Edward-Elmhurst Health on it,” Duggal said.

“That had to take precedence over everything else.”

Edward-Elmhurst Health purchased 400,000 Mac Duggal gowns that arrived in five semi-trucks in

August 2020. At the time, the hospitals were going through 50,000 isolation gowns per week.

“At the time, we had a supply crisis situation with isolation gowns,” said Mary Anderson, manager of infection control at Edward Hospital. “There just weren’t enough available anywhere in the world to meet the needs of healthcare facilities. It was a very desperate hour.”

Why so many owns are needed Every time a healthcare worker enters the room of a patient with a COVID-19 infection, they put on a new gown and dispose of it after they leave the room.

“Some of our COVID patients are really sick, so the nurse might be in and out of the room every few minutes. And every time they put on a new gown and throw it away,” Anderson says. “And it’s not just the nurse and the doctor that go in the room. It’s respiratory therapy and physical therapy, and lab to draw blood and radiology to do X-rays.”

The Mac Duggal gowns are high-quality and include features suggested by Anderson and her colleagues — elastic and thumb loops at the wrists, Velcro at the neck, a belt that allows someone to put the gown on and fasten it without help from someone else. The fabric is also impermeable but also breathable so they’re comfortable.

“They’ve been a pleasure to work with,” Hess said. “Both Mac and his son, Yuvraj, just two individuals who genuinely care. It never felt like they did this just for business.

They were very responsive, very committed to wanting to help Edward-Elmhurst.”

She may be 96, but her doctor told her she’ll probably live to be 100. I sure hope so.

Police investigate suspicious incident near grade school Student turns down ride from stranger

On May 14, Elmhurst Police received a call from the parent of a 10-year-old boy who reported a suspicious encounter that occurred at approximately 3 p.m. while walking home from school in the 400 block of Huntington Lane.

The driver of a gray older model sedan-type vehicle reportedly stopped to ask if the child needed a ride. The child declined and the vehicle drove away without any further conversation. The driver was described as a white male with black hair wearing a black coat.

On May 16, Interim Superintendent Dr. Linda Yonke put out a communiqué to all staff and families of the District 205 community explaining the incident. Her message also addressed student safety, along with safe campuses and surrounding neighborhoods being a top priority for the district.

“This weekend, school officials received a safety update from our Elmhurst Police Department school liaison officers that we are sharing for your information,” Yonke said in the memo. “9-1-1 was immediately and appropriately called as soon as the student told a trusted adult. The incident is under investigation by the Elmhurst Police Department and increased police presence has been added to the area.

“We are encouraging our school community to remain vigilant. If you see something suspicious, please do not hesitate to report it right away.

Be sure to remind your children of the importance of staying away from strangers.”

The Elmhurst Police Department continues to investigate this incident and is asking for the public’s help.

Elmhurst mom starts autism group on Facebook April is National Autism Awareness Month and there is a mom in Elmhurst who formed a Facebook group called Chicago Autism Parents And Providers. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), about 1 in 54 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

After Colleen Kelty’s son received his autism diagnosis, she quickly realized that while she had a supportive family and great friends that meant

well, she did not have anyone who could relate to what she was going through. She created the Facebook group specifically for parents of children with autism - a community where people could ask questions, share advice and provide resources.

“When you see the stats, you think everyone must know someone affected by autism, but that wasn’t the reality for me,” Colleen said. “Some days you want to brag on your child and others

you’re specifically looking for a dentist who’s worked with children with autism. This group just gets it - it has both been a tremendous resource and also provided a real sense of community for me.”

Colleen encouraged those all parents in the Chicagoland area that are affected by autism to join the Facebook group - Chicago Autism Parents And Providers. The group currently has more than 2,200 members.

The York boys water polo team has itself in a good position heading into the playoffs.

The Dukes finished the regular season 18-6 overall and went 9-2 in West Suburban Conference play. York lost its final regular season game, 15-11, to Lyons Township.

York is the No. 1 seed in its sectional. The Dukes play the winner of Morton vs. Maine West today.

Dukes coach Brian Drumm said Colin McNamara and Andrew Hausoul have been key offensive cogs coming down the home stretch of the season. “Colin and Andrew have taken on the scoring load for us the past two weeks,” he said. “They have put in between three and five goals a game over this last stretch. We are fortunate to have four players who can lead the team in scoring on any given night in Colin, Andrew, Josh Allen and Jacob Dunlap. The other players have found ways to find the open man on offense, and also hit big shots when certain players are double-teamed.”

McNamara, in particular, Drumm added, has taken things to the next level recently. “Colin has been dominant in the center position,” he said. “Teams are double- and even triple-teaming him, and he’s still able to either get a shot off or kick it out to a shooter on the

perimeter.”

Drumm also has seen an uptick in defensive play.

“We mostly played press defense this season, but in the past two weeks we have played the top team in Illinois, so we had to move to zone every so often,” he explained. “The boys’ shot-blocking and communication on defense have been locked in lately, which we are really excited about.”

Drumm noted the team’s resiliency in the face of adversity has been another notable point this spring. “This group’s resiliency as of late has been outstanding,” he said. “Because of rescheduling due to COVID, we just finished a stretch where the boys played 10 games in 12 days, and eight of our opponents were considered top-10 teams in Illinois. We also have been hit with some injuries and minor illnesses, so just getting through that stretch with a winning record was so impressive. The boys never complained or felt defeated over this stretch. They showed up every day ready to compete.”

Drumm said the strategy heading into this week’s playoffs includes the past, present and future. “We will have almost two weeks of practice before we begin the sectional tournament,” he said. “We plan to reflect on our recent performances, fine-tune some things and focus on the final stretch of the season.”

York girls soccer The York girls soccer team was 1-4-1 through its first six matches this season. York lost a recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division game to Downers Grove North on penalty kicks.

Coach Stevan Dobric noted Maya Rebic, Danielle Stockwell, Clare Mathews and Maddie Jeffery all have been great leaders and have “performed excellently,” he said.

Rebic had three goals and two assists in those first six games, while Stockwell had two goals and three assists. Allison Sheehan had three goals.

“Danielle Stockwell has done an amazing job of motivating the team this year,” Dobric said.

Mathews has been a key on defense for the Dukes. “Clare has taken control of the defense and is doing

an excellent job organizing the back line,” Dobric said. “The team is solidifying in the back after our first few games, and is working hard to stop chances by our opponents.”

Dobric continues to see progress on the offensive end as well.

“We have done a great job of putting pressure on teams to create chances in the offensive third of the field,” he said.

Additionally, Dobric noted his team has knocked it out of the park this spring when it comes to work ethic and resiliency. “No matter what the score line is, being up or down, these girls work hard every minute of every game,” he said. “The positivity that comes from this team makes each practice a joy to coach and be part of.”

Timothy Christian baseball While the Timothy Christian baseball team dropped a 2-0 Metro Suburban Conference game to St. Francis, sophomore pitcher Donald Tober had a notable outing. He struck out 12 in a seven-inning complete game.

“Donald had a very strong outing,” Timothy coach Brian Whartnaby said.

Earlier, the Trojans defeated St. Edward 6-2 and 9-3 in a pair of MSC games. Highlights from that series included Ben Jones pitching six strong innings and fellow senior CJ James collecting five RBI.

Elmhurst Eagles football, cheer announces season Special registration for football May 23

Since 1964, the Elmhurst Eagles football and cheer programs have been a part of the Elmhurst community, partnering with many local businesses and organizations.

COVID-19 made the past year challenging for the Eagles, but organizers have stayed busy holding fundraisers, volunteering and tending to other philanthropic efforts.

The Eagles organization is now happy to announce its regular fall season is beginning and kids couldn’t be more excited.

If your young athlete is considering football, there is a special registration event on Sunday, May 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bo Jackson Elite Sports complex.

Meet the coaches, ask questions, get fitted and choose jersey numbers.

It is also a chance to meet the Eagles’ sideline medical pros from

Olympia Chiropractic & Physical Therapy, who take care of the athletes. Plus, the trainers at the Bo Dome are holding an open combine (at no cost for registered Eagles) for the kids during this time.

It’s been a banner start thus far for the Timothy Christian boys tennis team.

Coach Keith Mills’ squad was perfect at 11-0 in its first 11 contests, which included a pair of Metro Suburban Conference victories. Timothy scored recent wins over St. Francis (32), Marmion (5-0) and Nazareth Academy (3-2).

“A surprising balanced lineup has been the key so far,” Mills stated. “We are winning at the top of the lineup and also at the bottom. We are playing with only one returning varsity player, one senior and three freshman in the starting top eight.”

Mills said a particular key has been the play of newcomers Eliot Mathew (freshman) and Tommy Kunz (sophomore) at No. 3 doubles. They were undefeated in their first 10 matches together. “They have been a surprise,” he said. “They key to their success has been limiting errors and forcing opponents into unforced errors.”

Junior Sammy Valeo was 10-1 playing mostly first doubles and some singles. “Sammy has a strong game with consistent groundstrokes and great court coverage,” Mills said.

Junior Tommy King was 8-2 in his first 10, playing No. 1 singles in most matches. “Tommy is the team’s top player playing first singles and first doubles,” Mills said. “Tommy possesses a 90-mile-per-hour serve and powerful forehand that overpowers many of his opponents,” Mills said.

Freshman Hendrick DeVries has been a mainstay at No. 2 doubles.

Freshman Brian Berbati also was 9-2 through his first 11. “Brian is a very strong player and capable of playing first singles, but has played mostly second singles this season,” Mills said.

Senior Josh Kiefer, who played junior varsity for two years, is in his first year on the varsity and was 6-3 through his first nine matches alternating between first and second doubles.

Junior Winston Chen, the team’s only returning varsity player, is the team captain and a returning state qualifier from 2019 as a freshman No. 1 singles player. Chen was 6-4 through his first 10 playing the top player from each school in each match. Three of Chen’s four losses were by super tiebreakers. “Winston’s game is all power and his serve tops out in the 90s,” Mills pointed out.

Mills said working on improved doubles play and becoming consistent on serve return are the team’s current goals.

“I felt we could be good this season knowing our top four players are strong,” he said. “The big surprise has been the development of the other four.

What happens if your mammogram is abnormal?

Mammograms, or X-rays of the breast, help save lives by detecting cancer early. These screenings can locate breast tumors not found by breast exam — before physical symptoms develop.

Doctors generally recommend annual mammograms starting at age 40, but possibly earlier and/or more frequent based on your individual risk factors.

While women may be used to getting these screenings, they may not be prepared to hear their mammogram was abnormal.

But abnormal mammograms are not

uncommon, and many times abnormal findings on a mammogram are not breast cancer. The doctor will likely schedule follow-up tests to get more information.

If a woman recently had the COVID-19 vaccine, a possible side effect of the vaccine is temporarily swollen lymph nodes on the side where the shot was given. This may show up on a mammogram and result in a call back for additional breast imaging which otherwise would not be necessary.

Women should make sure their doctor is aware if they received a COVID-19

vaccine.

The following follow-up tests are often used alongside mammography when results are inconclusive or additional information is needed: • Diagnostic mammogram– includes more images than a screening mammogram to rule out breast cancer in a woman who has a lump, symptoms of disease or is identified as high risk.

• Breast ultrasound – uses sound waves to obtain images of the breast.

For women with dense breasts, whole breast ultrasound can be a supplement to mammography to detect small can-

cers that mammography may miss.

• Breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) – uses strong magnetic fields to generate detailed images of the breast. Before the test, an IV is placed so that a contrast agent can be given by vein during the procedure, which helps reveal any potentially cancerous breast tissue.

• MBI (molecular breast imaging) – generates functional images of the breast and involves an injection with a small amount of a molecular tracer, which differentiates cancer cells from normal cells.

• Biopsy – removal of cells or tissue from the suspicious area of the breast.

The sample is then sent to a lab for analysis. According to the American Cancer Society, most biopsies (about four out of every five) are not cancerous. Some types of breast biopsies include: • Ultrasound guided core needle biopsy – sound waves are used to guide placement of a needle into the breast to retrieve samples of suspicious breast tissue or fluid.

• MRI-guided core needle biopsy – removal of a sample of suspicious breast tissue using a hollow needle.

MRI generates multi-planar and 3D images of the breast to locate the abnormality and guide the needle to the target areas.

• Stereotactic core needle biopsy – a mammogram is taken to determine the exact location of the abnormality, then a biopsy needle with vacuum suction removes the suspicious breast tissue. Elmhurst Hospital now offers AFFIRM® Breast Biopsy Guidance System, with 3D™ breast biopsy capability (coming to Edward Hospital in 2021), which helps reduce compression time and lowers X-ray dose for a better patient experience.

• Surgical biopsy – removal of all or part of a breast lump, and possibly a surrounding margin of normal breast tissue, for further analysis.

• Lymph node biopsy – used to check the lymph nodes under the arm for cancer spread. This may be done at the same time as a biopsy or breast surgery.

Follow-up tests may show a benign growth, calcification or a breast condition like a cyst. Calcifications may be related to older age, past injury to the breast or an infection in the breast.

If there are no signs of cancer, women will likely be advised to return to a regular schedule of screening mammograms and breast exams.

If cancer is discovered, a breast cancer diagnosis will provide more information about the type and stage of the disease. Breast cancers found by a screening mammogram are often caught early, making treatment more successful.

At Edward-Elmhurst Health, our breast cancer imaging services include advanced tools, tests and procedures that rely on the latest techniques for a precise diagnosis.

Before starting treatment, women are evaluated closely by a team of breast cancer experts from multiple disciplines. This team will get together in the same room to closely review a patient’s imaging tests and biopsy results and determine the right treatment path. Throughout the patient’s care, the team continues to meet weekly to review the progress.

If biopsy results are positive, patients will receive more detailed next steps, such as an appointment at the Breast Biopsy Results Clinic to meet with a radiologist and a breast nurse navigator and discuss a plan of action.
