Elmhurst celebrates 104th Memorial Day Parade on May 30 Fonzino to serve as Grand Marshal

Led by Grand Marshal Robert Fonzino, a Vietnam War combat veteran as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army and former resident of Elmhurst, some 75 entries will march in Elmhurst’s 104th An-

nual Memorial Day Parade through downtown Elmhurst on Monday, May 30, stepping off at 9:30 a.m.

The 2022 Parade is presented by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Elmhurst American Legion THB Post 187, the City of Elmhurst and Elmhurst Park District.

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst will again serve as Pa-

rade Marshals, assisted by Veterans from Elmhurst College, and also will march carrying their giant U.S. flag.

Ralph P. Pechanio, Chairman of the Elmhurst Veterans Commission and a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst, and John R. Quigley, President and CEO of the Elmhurst Chamber, are the Parade Co-Chairs, since 1997 and 2000, re-

spectively.

“Our parade is a tribute to all those men and women who have so bravely put their lives on the line to defend individual freedoms here in this greatest of nations and around the world,” said Quigley. “And, after two years of Coronavirus Pandemic-limiting military caravans, it will be special to parade once again

through the streets of downtown Elmhurst.”

York band director wins prestigious Music Educator Award York High School’s Director of Bands Michael Pavlik has been awarded the prestigious Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator Award.

The Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator awards are sponsored by Quinlan & Fabish Music Company and were established in 1989 as a tribute to professional music educators from the Chicago area. Pavlik leads the York Band program, which is consistently recognized as one of the most outstanding and respected music programs in Illinois.

“There is simply no one more deserving of this award. Mr. Pavlik’s dedication to his students and their growth as both musicians and people is second to one,” said former student Maggie Wisniewski (Class of 2020).

“He is the reason so many students pursue music at the collegiate level

and why so many former students.

I am beyond lucky and incredibly thankful to have played under his direction and been part of the community he has cultivated at York.”

Band directors and community members from the greater Chicagoland area nominate recipients, and a committee comprised of previous awardees selects the winners. The award recognizes Pavlik not only for his dedication to York’s program, but also for his involvement in the Elmhurst community.

Since 1989, this honor has recognized more than 200 music educators from the Chicagoland and Michiana regions.

The award’s ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 14 at Quinlan and Fabish, 6827 High Grove Blvd., Burr Ridge.

American Legion THB Post 187, with assistance from Elmhurst University’s Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity members, has placed four rows of 65 white crosses adjacent to the Veterans Memorial with the names of deceased Elmhurst veterans who served during World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam, Persian Gulf War, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

As has become a traditional, an Always Remember sign commemorating the names of the deceased Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshals has been erected adjacent to the crosses.

The sign was manufactured by Vital Signs USA, with a donation by Don Meyers.

The Veterans Memorial was dedicated in 1993 through the efforts of former VFW Post 2048, American Legion THB Post 187 and Ralph Pechanio, 1992 President (now Chairman) of the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Their fund-raising campaign generated more than $100,000 to build the memorial.

Applications to have a deceased veteran honored at the Veterans Memorial are available at Elmhurst City Hall, 209 North York Street, or by calling (630) 530-3010. Donations to the Veterans Memorial Fund are appreciated.

Event funding is provided through the City’s Explore Elmhurst Community Grant Program.

MICHAEL HOUSTON, 65 Michael Houston, a long-time resident of Elmhurst, passed away one year ago on May 19, 2021. Because his birthday was Aug. 5, 1956, he died about two and one-half months short of his 66th birthday. Michael attended Jefferson elementary school, Sandburg junior high and was a graduate of York High School. His family wishes to honor him on the one-year anniversary of his passing on Thursday, May 19 with the following: “Dear Mike, “We love you so much! A year has passed since you are gone and we miss your being with us. Rest in peace. Love you, miss you.”

JAMES MARK BERGER, 90 James Mark Berger, of Lombard, died on May 10, 2022, at the age of 90.

Jim was the former chairman of foreign languages at York High School in Elmhurst. He was a French teacher and was on York’s faculty for 38 years.

While he loved the French language and culture, he was also supportive of York’s other foreign languages, especially Latin. He taught AP French for many years. In retirement he joined a small cadre of francophone friends who took many advance literature courses at the Alliance Francaise de Chicago.

Jim was born in Deadwood in the Black Hills of South Dakota on July 22, 1931. He maintained a lifelong fascination for this Gold Rush town and its history, and knew well the lives of its colorful pioneers, past and present.

His parents were Harry Stone Berger and Lucille Walter Berger. His father was Deadwood’s Superintendent of Schools for nearly 40 years. His sister, Marilyn Berger Jordan, lives in the Seattle suburb of Mukilteo. Most of his nieces and nephews also live in the Seattle area; the late Bruce (Tina) Jordan, Ann Jordan, David Jordan, and Joan Jordan (Tom) Eilertson, and nephew Mark (Mary) Jordan of Southampton, NJ. He has several great nieces and nephews as well.

Jim graduated from Deadwood High School and spent one year at the University of Nebraska before transferring to Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo., where he obtained his BA degree. Following graduation in 1953, he joined the US Army and served mostly at Camp Rucker in Alabama.

After his discharge from the Army, he taught at Kemmerer, Wy., before attending Northwestern University for a master’s degree in English. He then joined York High School in Elmhurst.

Jim had taken a great deal of French as an undergraduate and, with an increased national demand for foreign language instruction, York sent him to the Université Laval in Quebec City for three summers to become fluent in French. He also attended University of Toulouse in France and spent a year in Belgium on a Fulbright Fellowship.

This inspired a love of European travel

nearly every summer for many years, alternating with summer road trips in the U. S. and Canada, especially to Deadwood.

In 1974, after serving as a medic in Vietnam and obtaining a master’s degree in Health Administration, James (Jim) Drury headed for a job in Chicago with a national healthcare association. He knew no one in the area.

Friends suggested he contact Jim Berger, who could show him around town. They soon became partners, and a short time later, bought a home in Lombard. Jim Berger loved to garden and he soon filled the flower beds with lots of plantings. He also loved Victorian-era antiques and art, so the house eventually became a treasure-trove of both. Another love was travel and teachers’ summer breaks were great for exploration. In February they would head for the warmth and enjoyment of Key West and Naples, Fla., for more than 25 years.

Jim Berger started attending Church of the Ascension, the venerable Anglo-Catholic institution on LaSalle Street in Chicago occasionally in 1969, during Father Orrick’s rectorship. He introduced Jim Drury to Ascension in 1975 and they became faithful attendees of the Solemn High Mass at 11 a.m. on Sundays and were active as vestry members and in social activities. At his death, Jim Berger was one of the most senior members. He was a long-time supporter of its stellar music program and of its Society of Mary.

“The Jims” not only travelled into Chicago for church, but they were also active participants in Chicago’s vibrant arts organizations. They were long-time subscribers to the Lyric Opera, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Music of the Baroque, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, the Grant Park Orchestra summer programs, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among many others.

Jim Berger passed away in his sleep on the night of May 9-10, 2022, in his 90th year.

Deborah Rine, one of his former co-workers at York, writing from retirement in Florida captured Jim well: “Monsieur Berger was a wonderful, caring, demanding, helpful and thoughtful Department Chairman,He was an excellent French teacher and continued to pursue his love of the language for years after his retirement.

For me, he was also a good friend. I wish I had seen more of him for these last few years”.

A Visitation will be held on Friday, May 20 from 3 – 8 p.m. at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. On Saturday, May 21st, LyingIn-State from 11 AM, followed by a Solemn Requiem Mass 11:30 AM at the Church of the Ascension, 1133 N. LaSalle Blvd, Chicago, Requiescat in pace Jim Berger.

100+ Women Who Care achieve milestone Recognized by Mayor Levin, City Council

At the Monday evening meeting of the Elmhurst City Council, Mayor Scott Levin gave a proclamation to recognize the local women’s fundraising group called “100+ Women Who Care.” Now in their tenth year, the group holds meetings quarterly and votes on one of three not-forprofit organizations to receive that quarter’s proceeds.

Each woman then writes a personal check for $100 directly to the charity, which provides them a “receipt.”

At the end of the year, everyone has a total of $400 donated, which can be a tax advantage.

After starting in November of 2013 under the direction of five founding members, the group has managed to contribute a grand total of more than $500,000 to 31 individual notfor-profits, directly impacting Elmhurst and the surrounding areas. This prompted Mayor Levin to declare May 16, 2022 as “100+ Women Who Care Day” in the City of Elmhurst.

Of the five originals, Charlotte Mushow and Jean Carlquist are the only two founding members who remain.

The ladies left the City Council a box of cookies decorated with “100+” written in icing.

Letter League frustrated with noshow candidates

The League of Women Voters encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. We also work to register voters and provide voters with election information through voter guides as well as candidate forums and debates.

We’d like to address the piece about informing voters and planning candidate forums. We set up five forums for Sunday, May 15.

• There are five Republicans running for the DuPage County Board, District 1. All but one candidate declined the invitation. We allowed that one candidate to make a statement.

• There are six Republicans running for the DuPage County Board, District 2. Two candidates declined the invitation and 4 signed and returned the ground rules. Only two candidates actually showed up to the forum. They did a great job.

• Of the two Republican candidates running for DuPage County Chairman, one did not appear, even though he had RSVP’d and returned his signed ground rules.

We work hard to reserve the space, arrange for recording, send invitations, order the timing and then presenting several candidate forums in one day.

We are volunteers providing voters with election information through candidate forums. We want citizens to vote, but we want them to vote informed. Candidate forums should be considered job interviews and if candidates decline/ avoid/ blow off an interview, this information should be considered when voting.

Obituary Jeanette “Jan” Pauli, 88 Jeanette Mary Pauli (nee Doering), a resident of Estero, Fla., formally of Bloomingdale, Ill., passed away peacefully on Wednesday May 4, at home in Estero, Fla., surrounded by family at the age of 88. Jan was born in Davenport, Ia. and graduated from

Davenport High School, also earned her B.A. from Northeastern Illinois University located in Chicago.

Jan and her husband Bob owned multiple service stations throughout the Chicago suburbs, operated as a family business, including a station on York Road in Elmhurst. Jan was an active member in several communities Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs and many additional community service organizations.

Jan had many hobbies and interests,

too many to list individually, but some included: golf, reading, FGCU Woman’s Basketball and world traveling including trips to China, South America and Africa. She was a big fan of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and enjoyed sailing on Lake Geneva. Jan was the author of many Turkey notes, a family tradition – unlike any other!

Jan was a vibrant person who lived and loved life to the fullest. She will be truly missed by everyone who ever had the joy to have met her.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Julia Doering (nee Eldridge); her husband, Robert; her husband, Thomas Klug; brother Donald; and half-brother, Richard. She is survived by her loving children, Scot (Frannie), Anne (Jack) Spencer, Chuck (Lynn) and Judi (Jim) Cuthbert. Daughter accepts award for the late Bob Graham

Bob Graham, a 1977 graduate was inducted into the Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame on Sunday May 1, 2022.

Bob started his hockey career at a very young age, playing for the Elmhurst Huskies Hockey Club, at the YMCA. Once in high school, he played for the York hockey team as well. Bob went on to play D1 Hockey for The University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he was awarded his letter.

Bob married his high school sweetheart, also the class of 1977, at the age of 23. The two began coaching and managing a team at the Huskies Hockey Club, now in Downers Grove. Then came children and grandchildren. All have followed in his footsteps, playing “The Greatest Game on Earth.”

Bob’s career took him to many places in the hockey world. He coached at a couple AA clubs, a AAA club, sat on the Central District Development Board and became the President of the Huskies Hockey Club, all while coaching multiple teams. In the end his love was for the Huskies, starting in his hometown of Elmhurst. His mentoring of each and every child that stepped on his ice, was his number 1 priority. Bob not only taught them hockey skills, he taught them life skills.

Tragically on May 24, 2017, he suffered a heart attack, and passed away at the age of 58. His wife,

children, grandchildren and mother-in-law, were there to watch his daughter Ashley accept his award.

Though bittersweet, Bob will be remembered by the hockey community at large.

Every child he coached, he left a positive, everlasting memory of “Coach Bob!

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

May 8 A victim told police at 4:07 p.m. that her stepbrother was coming over and had threatened her in the past. The suspect was contacted and stated it was a legal matter and didn’t want to say much about it. At 5:14 p.m., the suspect was outside protesting in front of the victim’s house. A reporting officer responded and informed both parties he is not violating any laws.

Assault, battery May 6 Shaun Haddad, 36, of Indianapolis, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery at Elmhurst Hospital at 3:55 p.m. Police said the victim, who works in security at Elmhurst Hospital, related he was posted outside of the suspect’s room when the suspect allegedly threw a cup of his urine in the face of both victims.

David Rasziszewski, 28, of Elmhurst, was charged with aggravated assault in the 600 block of N. Indiana at 10:49 p.m. According to police, a victim related while driving southbound on Indiana, the suspect walked into traffic carrying an axe over his shoulder, signaling the victim to turn around. Police said the victim felt threatened and called 911.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass May 10 Michael Hayford, 46, of Elmhurst, was charged with criminal damage to property in the 800 block of N. Addison at 8:06 a.m.

Police said a complainant reported reviewing security video footage which showed an employee damaging another employee’s vehicle in the parking lot. The reporting officer met with Hayford, who admitted to causing the damage, according to police.

A victim at a school in the 300 block of E. St. Charles reported he discovered his vehicle had been scratched and the registration sticker was partly peeled off. This case is pending investigation.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance, dispute May 9 A 47-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 300 block of W. St. Charles at 4:14 p.m. Police said witnesses reported seeing the suspect strike the victim in a parking lot.

May 6 A complainant at a store in the 600 block of N. York told police at 12:37 p.m. that a subject was being loud and belligerent towards employees and customers. The complainant requested the subject to be served with a no trespass notice. The subject was served with a no trespass notice and was released on scene.

May 5 While on patrol in the 100 block of W. Second at 11:42 p.m., a reporting officer was flagged down by a victim who relayed she needed help getting to her residence in Downers Grove as she was lost in town. The victim stated after a physical altercation with the suspect, the suspect broke her cellphone. The reporting officer attempted to contact the suspect with negative results. An investigation is pending.

May 8 Anna Agosta, 26, of Oakbrook Terrace, was charged with DUI, stopping on roadway and possession of open alcohol near Grand and Lake at 3:12 a.m. While on patrol, a reporting officer observed a vehicle stopped in the roadway at the intersection of westbound Grand and Lake. According to police, the traffic signal illuminated green indicating the vehicle should proceed through the intersection. However, the vehicle remained stopped through several cycles. Subsequent to a well-being check, police said Agosta was found to be asleep behind the wheel.

Ulises Chavez-Montoya, 36, of Dubuque, Iowa, was charged with DUI, obstructing identification and no insurance in the 1000 block of N. York at 9:06 p.m.

Devon Proud, 19, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for possession of alcohol by a minor and possession of cannabis in the 200 block of E. Crestview at 5:13 a.m.

May 6 Emirjona Hoxha, 33, of Bensenville, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, improper U-turn and violating minimum speed regulations near North and Route 83 at 12:23 p.m.

May 5 Ariel E. Cifuentes Ramos, 33, of Bensenville, was charged with DUI, no valid driver’s license, obstructing an officer, improper lane usage, transportation of open alcohol and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop in the 900 block of N. York at 1:38 a.m.

Fleeing, eluding May 9 Nya D. Wilkins, 21, of Harvey, was charged with Fleeing and Eluding, Reckless Driving and no insurance in the 400 block of N. York at 7:32 a.m. Police said that subsequent to the investigation of a possible DUI driver, an unknown suspect, driving a GMC Envoy struck a police squad car and a red Chevrolet Colorado as he fled from officers. Wilkins allegedly followed the suspect, exchanged vehicles with the suspect, and was subsequently apprehended by officers.

Possession of cannabis in a vehicle

The Elmhurst Police Department said last week that the following individuals were issued citations for possession of cannabis by either a driver or a passenger in a vehicle: Nevidian King, 26, of Chicago, near York and Industrial at 2:26 a.m. May 5; and Christopher Diego, 22, of Bensenville, in the 400 block of W. Lake at 6:09 p.m. May 6.

Possession of a controlled substance May 8 Miguel Flores, 25, of Joliet, was charged with obstructing justice, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended and leaving the scene of an accident and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident near Lake and Grand at 2:33 p.m.

Police said that subsequent to a hit and run, Flores fled on foot and was later located and taken into custody. Flores was also in possession of cocaine, according to police.

May 6 Jose Perez, 34, of Elmhurst, was charged with unlawful possession of controlled substance and obstructing identification in the 100 block of E. Lake at 8:08 p.m. Subsequent to a call for a verbal domestic, police said a complainant stated her son ran off towards York Road. The suspect was located, provided a false name and was in possession of a white powdery substance and was also wanted out of DuPage County, according to police.

Suspicious circumstances May 11 A complainant in the 900 block of S. Cadwell reported she reviewed home surveillance footage which appeared to show an unknown female attempting to gain entry to the residence and vehicles in the driveway. The unknown female was seen entering the complainant’s backyard before leaving the area in a dark colored sedan. This case is pending investigation.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

May 10 Theft was reported in the 400 block of S. Spring at 9:54 p.m. A reporting officer met with the victim who reported a dark brown planter was missing from the front of her business. The victim spoke to a witness who stated he observed an unknown suspect take the planter and leave the area in a Gray Honda Accord. This case is pending investigation.

May 9 Identity theft was reported in the 300 block

of Huntington at 10:30 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect used his personal information to open a fraudulent bank account.

The victim has no dollar loss.

May 7-May 9 Commercial burglary was reported in the 500 block of W. Wrightwood. A complainant related that an unknown suspect(s) shattered the front door to the business and found an unknown number of vape devices and CBD products strewn about. An investigation is pending.

May 7-May 8 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 400 block of E. Schiller. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered her vehicle and stole her iPhone charger sometime between the above dates. The victim is also unable to locate her driver’s license. If she is unable to locate her driver’s license, she will follow up with the officer.

May 7 Retail theft was reported at a liquor store in the 500 block of S. York at 3:17 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect described as a black male entered the store, removed three bottles of tequila and left the store without paying. The suspect fled the area south on York in a red Ford sedan.

Attempted residential burglary was reported in the 100 block of S. Kenmore at 9:53 p.m. A victim told police that upon returning home, she noticed damage to her front door and the door jamb. The door was still locked and upon checking the apartment nothing appeared missing.

May 6 Shatara S. Collins, 30, of Chicago, was charged with two counts of retail theft; Dorothy King, 19, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft and obstructing a police officer; Enosha A. Walls, 24, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft; Darquel S. Williams, 21, of Iowa City, was charged with obstructing a police officer; and Raychel A. Toney-Edwards, 23, of Chicago, was charged with obstructing a police officer at a liquor store in the 500 block of S. York at 7:51 p.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for a report of a retail theft that just occurred, and upon arrival, a complainant stated that three females entered his store and stole liquor before fleeing westbound on Vallette. Officers were able to locate the suspects’ vehicle unoccupied. Officers set a perimeter, took the five suspects into custody and transported them to the police station, according to police.

Theft was reported at Elmhurst Hospital at 8:57 p.m. A victim told police that while in the emergency room at the hospital, an unknown person(s) stole her coach purse with matching wallet. The victim’s cell phone and driver’s license were entered into LEADS as stolen. An investigation is pending.

March 7-May 6 The complainant, a service director with an auto dealership in the 300 block of W. Grand, related while conducting inventory they were unable to locate one of their courtesy cars—a black 2022 Honda HRV. The vehicle was entered into LEADS as stolen.

April 29 Identity theft was reported in the 600 block of S. Hillside at 2:41 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown person(s) attempted to change the address and email address to her Chase bank account. There was no dollar loss and the accounts were closed.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a regular meeting on Tuesday, May 10 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. Four board members—Athena Arvanitis, Beth Hosler, Courtenae Trautmann and President Kara Caforio—attended the meeting.

Three members—Jim Collins, Christopher Kocinski and Karen Stuefen—were absent.

FCCLA students honored The board recognized the York High School students who participated in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference, which took place April 7-9 in Springfield. The FCCLA features several competitions for York students who are interested in various career paths, including early childhood education and culinary arts.

York students Julia Clink, Angie Crisanto, Katelyn Guerra and Julianna Moran qualified to advance to the upcoming National FCCLA Leadership Conference in San Diego, California. Additionally, York students Christian Olivera Villagomez, Charles Liebeno and Teagan Roach qualified for the national conference by sweeping the top three spots in the Culinary Arts competition at the state event.

Trautmann stated that the district’s practice of contracting with the hospital for school nursing services is not sustainable. Kevin Rubenstein, the district’s assistant superintendent for student services, stated that District 205 is the only school district in the area that contracts with a hospital for nursing services.

He said other districts hire nurses directly.

He said that each school is required to have a nurse, and that certified nurses are required for certain duties.

Superintendent offers strategic planning update District 205 Superintendent Keisha Campbell noted near the end of the meeting that the district’s strategic planning survey and focus groups have officially concluded. A recent extension of the survey deadline allowed the district to receive an additional 650 responses to the 1,000 responses that had already been submitted.

Campbell also stated that she will attend an upcoming year-in-review event on Wednesday, May 25, at the Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave. Campbell will attend two separate meetings at the library on May 25. The morning session will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. The evening session will run from 5 to 6 p.m.

Registration is required for each event due to space limitations.

The board will hold its next regular meeting on May 24.

County earns two National Achievement Awards DuPage County has received two Achievement Awards from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The awards honor innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents.

NACo recognized the DuPage County Sheriff’s tattoo removal and cover-up program and the County’s partnership with DuPage PADS Interim Housing Center.

“We are pleased that once again, DuPage County’s creative and innovative services have captured national attention,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “We are grateful for the recognition from NACo and for

the opportunity to share information about these initiatives with government leaders across the nation.”

DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick started providing tattoo removal as part of a gang-cessation and jobs program created to reduce recidivism at the DuPage County jail.

Once tattoos are removed or covered up, the action signifies an inmate’s commitment to a gang-free future.

“We created the program based on our inmates’ strong desire to leave the gang life,” said Sheriff Jim Mendrick.

“No one had ever shown them another path or given them some of these opportunities. We have removed or covered up 48 gang tattoos so far and

over 100 inmates are on a waiting list to have their tattoos removed.

“This opportunity is something new to them and their desire to improve themselves within our facility is significant.”

County awards $5 million in federal COVID relief to PADS The DuPage PADS Interim Housing Center provides emergency housing for persons experiencing homelessness in DuPage County. The County Board voted in December 2021 to provide $5 million in federal COVID relief money to DuPage PADS to buy and remodel a former hotel and convert it into a space for

people and families to recover from their housing crisis and identify permanent housing options.

“The Interim Housing Center completely transforms the way individuals experiencing homelessness receive shelter and services,” said Julie Renehan, chairwoman of the County’s Health and Human Services Committee. “Rather than moving between the night-by-night shelter locations, families and individuals now have a place to land and heal “The center gives people the privacy, safety, and dignity they need to gather themselves and work their way back toward self-sufficiency and housing stability.”

“All across the country, counties are working tirelessly to support residents and drive recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said NACo President Larry Johnson. “This year’s award-winning programs showcase how counties work every day to build healthy, safe and thriving communities.”

Nationally, awards are given in 18 different categories that reflect the vast, comprehensive services counties provide.

Red light camera on Route 83 to be removed Mazzochi asks IDOT: What took so long?

State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) has issued the following statement in response to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT)’s announcement that the permit to operate red light cameras at Illinois Highway 83 in Oakbrook Terrace has been revoked: “I appreciate that this justifiably vilified camera finally is going through the removal process. But it is baffling that IDOT cannot acknowledge the real reason why this camera should have been scrutinized and removed long ago -- because it was specifically mentioned in a federal indictment involving red light camera public corruption for Democratic Senator Marty Sandoval.

“I also have repeatedly urged IDOT to conduct this review because this camera didn’t just fail to deliver improved public safety, it potentially was the cause of increased accidents.

“IDOT expects us to believe that it is just a coincidence that the bureaucracy has belatedly reviewed the paperwork for compliance. In reality, given the recent criminal charges filed by the federal authorities against the

former Mayor of Oakbrook Terrace involving this very camera, this has become a political embarrassment for IDOT and Governor Pritzker, who has let this sit for years. Various Democratic legislators are also about to face the voters during primary season. People want to know why Democrats’ prior promises to end red light cameras have gone unfilled, and why they have not enacted my common-sense legislation to target those involved with public corruption.

“Further, by stubbornly refusing to concede the real reason behind this camera’s removal, IDOT is sidestepping two critical issues: first, how and why IDOT permitted this particular corrupt camera installation; and second, how and why red light cameras throughout the suburbs have been repeatedly tied to federal public corruption charges. Bad news and deaths always seem to come in threes, and sure enough, it wasn’t long before we learned about the passing of realtor Dennis Sluga and service station owner Jan Pauli.

Thank you, first of all, to all the people who complimented the obituary story written about Frank Mushow. People praised me as the writer, but the truth is, Frank did all that cool stuff; I just wrote it down.

Here is my own favorite story about Frank Mushow for the readers of the Independent to enjoy: Frank was into rhinoceroses—he had several statues and images of them around the house on Fairfield he shared with his lovely wife Charlotte, a dear friend of mine. When he drove a Corvette, Frank had a vanity plate that read: RHINO. Well, many of us know there was a famous Chicago Cubs baseball player who went by a similar form of that name—Ryne Sandberg or RYNO. About downtown parking …

Following Frank’s wake, friends got together at Tannin’s in downtown for a glass of wine (or bourbon—they have bourbon now!) and a “flight” of hors d’oeuvres, sitting in the window where we could watch the excitement of a very busy York Street—busier than, say, a year ago? Ya think?

We noticed there was a row of cars with their flashers on lined up directly parallel to the cars parked in legal spaces along York—on both sides! It seemed a little excessive, but we assumed people were still doing curbside pick-up at the restaurants nearby.

Still, some of the cars stayed— and stayed and stayed. Eventually, a woman parked in a legal spot on York couldn’t pull out because of the line of double-parkers. Police came to the area and began forcing people to move along or face a traffic ticket.

One driver attempted to argue,

but the officer was having none of it. He flat out told the driver (we could eavesdrop) there was a parking garage “right there”— directing toward the one next to the police station—and another “right over there”—pointing toward the Addison Street garage with the sidewalks that offer easy access to York Street.

Ah yes, the garages that serve York Street. The ones that several people argued against; the ones that many people didn’t want because it would “ruin” the character of our downtown.

So, what is the character of our downtown? People arguing with policemen when they can’t park directly in front of their destination? Where are those alderman who claimed we “didn’t need” a parking deck in downtown? Or that parking garages shouldn’t be more than two or three stories tall?

Oh, they were voted out of office by the smart people of Elmhurst, who realized they’d rather have tall parking structures to accommodate cars rather than vehicles double-parked up and down York Street with their emergency flashers on. It looked like Christmas out there!

• The Pet Parade was Saturday, and then Sunday was Museum Day as well as the Candidate’s Forum held by the Elmhurst League of Women Voters.

It was a busy weekend with lots of running around for photo ops.

It sure beats being at home under quarantine!

A group called ROSE D205 has released the following statement in response to comments made during Public Forum at the District 205 School Board meeting held Tuesday, May 10: For the past few months our community has experienced a series of public comments from an organized group accusing D205 administration and teachers of a “lack of transparency” when it comes to curriculum. That group argues that test results of D205 students establish that SEL harms academic performance. The group purports to represent all D205 parents. It does not.

As leaders of a parent-led group in the community with more than 500 members (most of them current parents in D205), we would like to address some of those statements.

One of the speakers at the last board meeting suggested that the “We” referred to in the core belief of the D205 BOE does not include parents.

We would like to remind everyone that BOE members are elected by the community, thus represent the community and are a voice for D205 schools, students and the community. They are also parents in D205, as well as volunteers, who bring a varied set of skills to the BOE and put a lot of hours into making the best decisions for our schools.

At that recent board meeting, this group made calls to Dr. Campbell to “clean house” and conduct a “full review of the curriculum.” In the current economic climate, where there is huge shortage of talent in all industries but especially in education, such an undertaking does not seem to be in the best interest of the students. D205 employs highly-qualified professionals with lots of experience in education. There are a series of strategic development plans put in place, so changing administration does not seem to be efficient.

The group’s claims that there is no transparency regarding the curriculum in D205 schools are unfounded. We parents receive numerous emails,

from the BOE, the superintendent, principals and teachers. A great deal of information is published on district and school websites and teachers’ web pages. Moreover, any parent can login into their child’s Google account and see their child’s emails, Google Classroom assignments and more. Many presentations throughout the school year address various aspects of the curriculum, including what is being taught in D205 schools and how. From our experience, these presentations are poorly attended by parents—but they exist and provide transparency.

The group cites test scores and proficiency in math and ELA as justification for their call for D205 to go “back to basics” and focus on core competencies to raise those test results. In our view, which is informed by the materials transparently made available to parents, D205 does, in fact, focus heavily on those basics. In addition, after two years of COVID, all administrators in the district (and a lot of parents) report what students need right now is more support when it comes to mental health, social skills and behavior in a school setting.

We cannot expect high academic achievement without supporting the students as a whole, but also without supporting our teachers and school employees. The accusations and statements made against our teachers and their day-to-day work with our children create a highly stressful environment that threatens their learning.

This is not “us vs. them.” We must all work together to benefit our kids. All these attacks and accusations do nothing to support our children and their development. The majority of parents in D205 are supportive of our teachers and administrators, and we seek to work together to accomplish the best for our kids.

“We all know an older family member, friend or neighbor whose efforts have shaped our community into a better place,” said Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs). “Let’s help give them the recognition they deserve by nominating them to the Senior Illinoisan Hall of Fame.”

The Senior Illinoisan Hall of Fame celebrates outstanding accomplishments in community service, education, the labor force and the arts.

Each year, four candidates — one from each category — are inducted.

Eligibility is based on an individual’s past and present accomplishments, and the candidate must be a current Illinois citizen or a former citizen for most of their life. Posthumous nominees are also considered.

“I would have never been able to achieve this without the guidance of my teachers and the support of friends and family,” said Audrey, who attended Visitation School in Elmhurst.

A very involved student from her first day at Montini Audrey has kept up a rigorous pace throughout her high school experience. She most recently received the President’s Education Award for Academic Excellence. She is also an Illinois State Scholar and an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor. This year, she was elected president of Montini’s National Honor Society and served as a Peer Tutor.

She is a member of two foreign language clubs and their honor societies, French and Spanish, and served as Secretary of the Spanish Honor Society during her junior year, and president, her senior.

Audrey has also been a member of the Bronco Math Team throughout her high school career - and most recently celebrated the team’s sixth-place finish at (ICTM) state. She is a member of Mu Alpha Theta and a member of Montini’s Future Medical Professionals Club. She’s also managed to fit Chess Club into her curriculum.

When asked about the last important obstacle in her high school career as valedictorian—her speech at the commencement ceremony—Audrey says she’s not nervous at all.

“As long as I’m not being graded on the speech, I’ll be fine,” she said.

“We are so proud of Audrey and are amazed at all she has been able to accomplish in four short years,” said Montini President Jim Segredo. “She is such an accomplished and involved student—the epitome of Bronco pride. Several student entrepreneurs recently pitched their concepts in person to a panel of Elmhurst faculty and working entrepreneurs, competing for real-world business advice and a shot at more than $3,000 in prize money. The winners planned to use their prize money to accelerate their ideas to the next phase of development.

The Village of Lombard is seeking a Facilities Technician in the Department of Public Works to perform general facility maintenance work and the repair and maintenance of Village buildings. A successful candidate will have experience with building repairs, light construction, painting, and drywall patching. Other tasks include: evening security, general building repair, carpet cleaning, deliveries, room set-ups for meetings, and snow removal.

This is not a custodial position but janitorial work may occasionally be required. Must be available for emergency and non-emergency situations outside normal business hours. The position is scheduled for 27.5 hours per week (5.5 hours daily, M-F, generally 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.).

IC Catholic Prep’s Manchester wins three sectional titles York and Timothy Christian also sending athletes to state

IC Catholic Prep senior Carly Manchester hit the girls track and field trifecta. Manchester won three individual championships at the recent Class 1A Seneca sectional and will compete in three events at this weekend’s state meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Manchester won the 800 sectional title with a time of 2:25.39, won the 1,600 crown in 5:24.69 and also won the 3,200 run in 12:01.48. Her next closest competitor in the 1,600 clocked in at 5:36.51, while the sec-

ond-place finisher in the 3,200 was more than 15 seconds behind Manchester.

Because of Manchester’s efforts, IC Catholic Prep finished fifth in the sectional with 39 points. Manchester is seeded seventh in the 3,200, ninth in the 1,600 and 11th in the 800 at state.

Timothy Christian girls track Timothy Christian was third at Seneca with 47 points. Sophomore Jenny Lumkes took second in the 300 hurdles in 50.42.

The Trojans will also send a pair

of relays to Charleston. The 1,600 relay was second at Seneca in 4:20.58 with senior Cailey Schuurmann, freshman Ashley Sikkenga, senior Paige Hoving and senior Kennedi Clark.

Timothy’s 3,200 relay team also qualified after a second place showing in Seneca with Lumkes, Hoving, Schuurmann and senior Katelyn Leonard running 11:00.32.

15 games and each by a single goal), the team has responded in a very positive way, coming out stronger.”

Since returning to Illinois from its spring break trip, the Timothy Christian baseball team has been firing on all cylinders. The Trojans were 15-7 overall through their first 22 games, including a 9-3 mark in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

More importantly, Timothy was 14-3 at one point since returning from that spring break set of games.

Through 22 games, sophomore shortstop-pitcher Casey Folkerts was hitting .463 with seven doubles, 20 RBI and had an on-base percentage of .537 and an on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.105. Senior third baseman-catcher Fletcher Roemmich was hitting .355 with five doubles, one triple, two home runs and 22 RBI. He had an on-base percentage of .488 and had an on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.052. Also of great importance, Roemmich had struck out only four times in his first 82 plate appearances. Junior catcher-pitcher Donald Tober was hitting .345 with six doubles, two homers and 23 RBI. Junior Ethan Munk was hitting .342, while sophomore Jake

Armstrong was hitting .333. Junior Evan Montella had an identical .333 average.

On the mound, Tober was 3-1 with one save, a 1.55 ERA and had struck out 52 batters in 31 2/3 innings of work. Senior Jacob Friend was 5-2 with a 2.37 ERA and had 45 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings of play. Armstrong was 3-1 with one save, a 3.82 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 33 innings.

During a 4-1 stretch earlier in the season, Folkerts went 8-for-15 at the plate with two doubles, four RBI and multiple game-changing plays at shortstop. Roemmich had nine RBI in those five games, going 5-for-12 at the plate with a pair of home runs and a double. Armstrong went 6-for-12 at the plate and pitched six innings, allowing only one run to earn the win against Elmwood Park. Tober struck out 11 in 5 2/3 innings of work and allowed one run in a winning effort against Aurora Christian.

Other recent highlights included a 4-1 non-conference win over Hinsdale South and a 4-3 non-conference win over Glenbard East—both Class AA schools.

On the individual front, the Timothy No. 1 doubles team of Winston Chen and Sammy Valeo earned a tiebreak win over Hinsdale South.

King was 13-2 at No. 1 singles, while Chen and Valeo were 15-3 at No. 1 doubles to lead the way for the Trojans.

Timothy coach Keith Mills said this spring’s weather has been anything but helpful to tennis clubs around the area. “The rain has hampered practices and matches,” he said. “It seems like we keep starting over each week.”

Coach Mills noted freshman Luke Tuchsherer has been notable, continuing his improvement, as has sophomore Hendricks DeVries.

“Luke is starting to improve his match tactics and use his skills, and Hendricks is developing his serve and consistency,” he said.

University raises more than $299,000 during #JAYITFORWARD Giving Day 2022 Elmhurst University alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff and students came together and raised more than $299,000 during #JayItForward Giving Day 2022.

The amount significantly exceeded this year’s goal of $250,000 and puts the University in range of setting a new fundraising record for the current fiscal year.

Proceeds from the 24-hour #JayItForward fundraiser, held on Thursday, May 5, support student scholarships and other campus initiatives included in Elmhurst 150: The Campaign for Elmhurst University, the University’s largest-ever fundraising campaign.

York boys water polo team wins sectional title

Dukes to play in state finals tournament this week; Honken sets school mark

The York boys water polo team hit the jackpot. And hit it at home. The Dukes 12-6 to win their own York sectional title. The win advanced the Dukes to this week’s IHSA boys state water polo finals at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. York plays Chicago Whitney Young today at 5:45 p.m. in the state quarterfinals.

The state semifinals are Saturday morning at Stevenson and the state title game is slated for Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. York advanced to the sectional final after beating Chicago St. Patrick 19-1 in the semifinals.

York won its sectional quarterfinal match 17-7 over Chicago Prosser.

Speaking of Stevenson High School, an early tough opening-game tournament loss was turned into a positive by the Dukes. York recently competed in the highly competitive Stevenson tournament in Lincolnshire and opened play with a loss to New Trier. York then came back to rattle off wins against Lincoln-Way East (7-3), Fenwick (9-4) and Loyola Academy (14-4).

York had a 21-7 overall record (through its first 28 games) and was 3-1 in West Suburban Conference action. Coach Brian Drumm noted

sophomore Gavin Honken has set a new program record for most goals recorded by a sophomore. Honken led the Dukes with 84 through 28 games.

Other key statistical leaders include Mathew Czech, who was leading the team in assists with 47, Matthew Skwiot, who was leading the team in steals with 54, Nick Kamenica, who was leading the team with 39 earned ejections, and Jack Schroeder, who was the team leader in goalie saves with 269.

Drumm also has been thrilled by the improvements the newer varsity players have made. “The greatest improvement in the past few weeks has been production from our newer varsity players,” he said.

That group includes the likes of sophomore Martin Polomsky, junior Colin Rice, freshman Tim Jensen and senior Hugo Allaume. “Martin, Colin, Tim and Hugo have all stepped into roles comfortably when called upon,” Drumm said. “The learning curve from those guys has been at such a high rate, especially over the past few weeks.”

Drumm cited Kamenica for excellence on the leadership front. “Nick continues to be such a leader in all facets of the game,” he said. “He’s

someone we can run an offense around because he pulls in double coverage, and he’s someone who can match up with any player in the state on the defensive end.”

Drumm has been pleased with Jensen’s development as a ninth grader on the varsity. “Tim is a freshman who has earned more and more minutes this year as he has become more comfortable with the pace of the varsity game,” he explained.

“It can be really overwhelming for a new varsity player, especially a freshman, but he has great awareness and aggressiveness for a young player.”

Drumm also praised the contributions of Charlie McKenna in key situations in the water. “Charlie has hit some huge shots for us these past few weeks,” he said. “He has gained a lot of confidence as a scorer over the course of the season, which has given us an exciting new dimension on the offensive end.”

Drumm added he has continued to marvel at the attitude his team displays on a daily basis, particularly as the calendar ticked toward the postseason. “They really understand how important the daily process is as we head into the home stretch of the season,” he said.

EGC names Litavsky ‘Person of the Year’ Teri Litavsky, local artist and EGC member, was recently honored as Elmhurst Garden Club’s Person of the Year.

The award recognizes a member of the club who has been instrumental in advancing the club’s mission and goals. Litavsky was recognized for her technical knowledge that helped usher the club into the digital age with online EGC Garden Walk ticket sales, her active roles as President, Recording Secretary, Garden Walk Ticket Chairman, and Chairman of the Ray Graham Garden Club Committee.

As both a member of the Ray Graham Association and the EGC, Litavsky recognized the opportunity for the EGC to achieve the goal of civic beautification by enhancing the outdoor learning space at the Ray Graham Elmhurst Community Learning Center located at 420 W.

The ECG Ray Graham Garden Committee began work in 2014 to improve the outdoor space for the clients who attend the Learning Center to enjoy and learn in a safe, peaceful and accessible environment. The committee developed community awareness of the center’s needs and over time has spearheaded fundraising efforts and donations of goods and services for a beautification project that includes enhanced landscaping, raised flower beds, a patio, a butterfly garden, and refurbished greenhouse. The Learning Center clients enjoy the space for horticultural activities as well as reading time, lunchtime and parties.

Club members have recently planted several donated Korean dwarf lilac bushes at the Learning Center. The next planting day for bed annuals and raised bed herbs is scheduled for

May 23/rain date May 24.

“Teri is truly a Renaissance woman, a visionary leader, an artist, a creative gardener, and an active member in the Elmhurst Garden Club and the Elmhurst community,” said EGC member Karen Exiner in presenting the award to Litavsky.

The mission of the Elmhurst Garden Club is to encourage the advancement of, and stimulate an interest in, horticulture through education: To aid in the protection of the environment, To provide an outlet for creative expression, To encourage civic beautification, To provide gift scholarships to further horticulture, conservation, landscape design and science education.

Kaczmarek announces ‘Vote Anywhere’ on Election Day for 2022 DuPage first county in Illinois to launch new voting option

DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek has announced “Vote Anywhere” Election Day voting for 2022. DuPage will be the first county in Illinois to launch the option for voters to cast a ballot in any one of its 263 polling places, instead of limiting the choice to a voter’s precinct polling place or vote center.

“Now voters may cast their ballot conveniently at a polling place near their job or school, instead of rushing to or from their home precinct,” Kaczmarek said. “Best of all, DuPage voters will no longer be turned away on Election Day for being in the wrong polling place in the County.”

Registered voters already could vote outside their assigned precinct polling place in DuPage County for the 39 days of Early Voting. The County Clerk’s office is now extending this option for an additional day, using the same Early Voting system, process, and safeguards on Election Day. “Two developments late in 2021 combined to create ‘Vote Anywhere’ Election Day,” Kaczmarek said. “In October, our office purchased the new Hart Verity complete print-on-demand voting system, so we no longer need to stockpile pre-printed ballots at polling places for just three or four precincts. After check-in, each voter now receives their freshly printed ballot on site.

“In November, the Illinois General Assembly passed legislation allowing each county to set up multiple vote centers where residents from all over the county can vote outside their home polling places on Election Day.” The number of precincts remains unchanged from 2020 and the number of polling places in use is estimated to be essentially the same as 2020, pending location availability. No voter will be deprived of their local polling place in order to fulfill “Vote Anywhere” Election Day voting. As always, strict security measures will be in place to ensure one person, one vote.

Voters may apply now online for a vote-by-mail application for the Primary Election or for permanent voteby-mail to receive a ballot in all future elections, go to: dupagecounty.gov/Election/VoteByMail/.

Thursday, May 19 is the first day of Early Voting at the DuPage Fairgrounds. Starting Monday, June 13, 22 Early Voting sites will open – four more than 2020 and double the number from 2018. Tuesday, June 28 is Primary Election Day with 263 polling locations.

“I’m gratified to bring our citizens so many ways to vote,” Kaczmarek added. “I want the people of DuPage County to have so many voting options that they’re practically tripping over them. Voting has never been easier, more convenient, or more secure.

“Now that everything is in place, I’m urging registered voters to take advantage of it and exercise their precious

right to vote.”

The talent in the York High School drama department has been recognized as some of the best in the state of Illinois.

Senior Owen Espinosa and junior Regan Wright are among the nominees for Best Actor and Best Actress in the 2022 Broadway in Chicago Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards (IHSMTA), which celebrates excellence in high school theatre throughout Illinois. IHSMTA is the regional program that feeds into the National High School Musical Owen Theater Awards, also known as The Jimmy Awards.

Owen and Regan will travel to Chicago with the other 22 nominees later this month to participate in a Broadway workshop hosted by the cast of Regan “WICKED.” They will also participate in an awards Wright program held at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place.

York’s spring musical “Godspell” concludes the 2021-22 season, which also included productions of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime” and “Ace.” “York Drama has had quite a beautiful year, and we celebrate all of the students who have contributed to the heart and soul of our season,” Marianetti said. “We are truly grateful for the love and support shown by our administration and community as we continue to embrace and celebrate the arts in new and vibrant ways.”

Meet Diane Kilcommons, Center Director of Huntington of Elmhurst Huntington Learning Center helps every student become the best academic version of him/herself. Diane Kilcommons has a master’s degree in education and has taught for 40 years, including home educating her four children. Diane and her husband, Mark, have owned Huntington Learning Center for the past twelve years.

Huntington Learning Center helps children improve their foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling, math, study skills, and phonics. They also help students prepare for college with their individualized ACT/SAT programs. Higher test scores mean more opportunities.
