A smokin’ hot Derby Day

ELMHURST — A number of Elmhurst properties may experience overland flooding following significant rainfalls even if the proposed multiple detention basin projects are completed, according to City Manager Jim Grabowski.

These areas include sections of Washington Street, Saylor Avenue and Jackson Street, Spring Road and Harrison Street, as well as Jackson Avenue and Vallette Street, he explained at a City Council meeting.

Also, the City will be increasing the size of conveyance sewers west of York Street running from Madison, Jackson, Harrison and McKinley flowing to the four existing pump stations along Salt Creek. The capacity of these pump stations would also be approximately doubled.

Park Board to improve safety on sled hill at Allison Park

ELMHURST — You would think moving a pile of dirt to make a new sled hill would be easy, but that is not the case at Ben Allison Park.

In 2013, a barrier and signage was placed on the north edge of the hill to serve as directional control and channel sliders away from the hazard.

The hill sits atop an abandoned concrete water reservoir tank which has made improvement complicated. In 2015, the District completed a land survey and conceptual design studies so accurate construction cost estimates could be provided.

HereFebruary is the revised layoutPark for Dr. Noelle O’Connor: At their 10, 2016 Board meeting, the Board approved Phase II of the project, the demolition and partial removal of the concrete water reservoir, re-grading and restoration of the site, and the construction of a small “beginner sled hill.” A bid of $118,290 was approved and work began in late March of 2016, with completion expected by the end of spring 2016.

Most people have legs of unequal length. If their “leg-length discrepancy” is large enough, it can be a source of back pain. Generally speaking, a difference in leg lengths greater than 5 millimeters (1/4 inch) can cause lower back pain, while discrepancies greater than 9 millimeters result in a 6-fold greater likelihood of experiencing lower back pain. Once the chiropractor diagnoses the problem, its cause can be identified. Leg-length discrepancies can result from poor alignment of the pelvis or simply because one leg is structurally longer than the other. Grabowski explained that City staff engineers along with engineers from consultant Christopher Burke have begun discussions with DuPage County storm water officials to begin to move this project forward.

Based on discussions some of the key items to be undertaken include: • The City needs to submit storm water modeling comparing existing conditions at various locations along Salt Creek.

• Develop modifications to

the operations plan for Salt Creek flood control facilities.

• Install new control structures for the Elmhurst quarry.

• Meet and gain approval from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps.

• Modify the Salt Creek Watershed Plan.

• Excavate the quarry to provide the required compensatory storage.

Grabowski said City staff has received a lot of comments and questions from County staff

and is preparing responses. ”We expect to have this within the next 30 days,” he said.

The City will focus on the area near Vallette/Swain/Saylor Streets because there are no other projects for which the City can utilize open space for detention in that location. Other areas will be getting some relief from the detention facilities at Madison, Bryan and Jackson Schools as well as the Washington Detention, which may reduce the amount of pumping required

Rotary hosts second annual Derby Day celebration

t was a bright sunny day for the races on Saturday, May 7, when members of the Elmhurst Rotary Club hosted its 2nd annual Derby Day celebration. It was held at Ditka’s Trackside in Arlington Heights beginning at 2:30 p.m. and continuing until Nyquist crossed the finish line at the 142nd Run for the Roses -- the Kentucky Derby.

Guests got into the spirit, with ladies in hats and gentlemen dressed dashingly, all

looking very genteel. Following a spread of hors d’oeuvres, there was a cold seafood bar, Chef-carved ham and turkey and best of all, a chocolate fountain flowing for dessert.

There were live and silent auctions as well as raffles, one with a grand prize of $10,000.

The Spotlight Charities for the evening were Elmhurst Park District’s Playground for Everyone at Butterfield Park and United Community Concerns Association (UCCA), which provides food for the less fortunate at the holidays.

Munger impressive at Regional Business Outlook luncheon Advocates working together to solve state’s financial woes

ELMHURST — Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner was expected to speak at the 7th annual Regional Business Outlook luncheon on Tuesday, May 3, but had to decline and Illinois State Comptroller Leslie Munger delivered the keynote address instead.

The luncheon was presented

by Choose DuPage, IceMiller Legal Counsel and Mesirow Financial.

Sponsored by BMO Harris, Ball, Blooming Color Printing, Maclyn and PNC, the program began with DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin offering the DuPage County Business Outlook.

“We have done what we can to keep business costs low,” he said. “The property tax rate in the County has remained flat.

In sales tax, the county has been collecting a one-quarter cent sales tax, which is ending, so we can put that money back in the taxpayer’s pocket.”

A key theme of the luncheon was consolidation of governmental entities, an issue Cronin has been taking on ever since his days in the Illinois Senate. The most prominent example was combining the juvenile detention facilities of DuPage and Kane Counties into one to save costs on operations, personnel and other resources. Cronin has been one of the most vocal advocates for reducing the size of government.

Cronin urges reducing units of government “There are 8,480 units of local governments in Illinois and a dozen or so special taxes,” Cronin said. “There are ‘ghost governments’ out there that fly under the radar and keep their allotment coming in from the state, while doing very little to serve the public.

“Three years ago, the Senate tried to and were able to consolidate 13 units of government into one.”

Civic leaders in the notfor-profit industry, along with legislators have started the Transform Illinois task force, signed by Governor Rauner in a personal visit he made to the DuPage Water Commission in

October of 2014.

“It is chaired by Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti and it is making things happen,” Cronin said. “It is making foundational changes that will begin to turn this ship around.

“This may seem like little stuff, but in DuPage County, we have already seen savings of $100 million.”

Illinois Comptroller Munger takes the floor “Illinois has not had a balanced budget in 15 years. We must have a budget. We are at the precipice and right now, we are being governed by the courts.”

Those were the opening words of Illinois State Comptroller Leslie Munger, who went on to give a very matterof-fact, albeit bleak picture of the state’s fiscal status.

“When the State is doing little toward solving its budget problems, then the courts have to step in and order payments to certain groups,” she said. “The problem is that sometimes, a judge may order payments without knowing whether or not the state has the money to make them.”

The big bad numbers Munger dropped some pretty big numbers throughout her address: • $110 million goes in and out of the pension fund every day.

• Illinois has $7 billion in unpaid bills.

• Illinois owes $400 million just in fees and late charges.

• The courts have mandated payments for higher education, social services, drug and alcohol programs and respite care. Illinois is on the hook to pay back $2 billion for those services.

“I realize it is hard to get your head around these numbers,” she said.

Last month, Munger decided to treat paychecks to elected officials just the same as all of its financial obligations – get in line!

“Now everyone is in the line,” she said. “Why should officials be paid when those they serve are not?”

That comment brought a round of applause.

“We are barely keeping the doors open at places that serve our most vulnerable residents,” she continued.

Suggestions for a solution Munger offered suggestions to get the state back on track and in control of its finances again.

“First, we need to start solving the problem, not just the

symptom,” she said. “We need to invest in getting people in this state back to work. We have so many assets here, transportation, farms, higher education institutions, there’s no reason not to work together toward a solution.”

Knowing the state must continually look for ways to make things faster, cheaper and better, Munger said she had reduced her staff by 20%, which saved $1 million in the first two months.

“All departments of government need to follow that lead,” she said.

Then she talked about economic growth, calling it “a total game changer.”

“That is the area that will allow us to grow the tax base, which will bring in more investment and more growth,” she said. “We need to put Illinois and our taxpayers first.”

She offered to help as much as possible.

“I can’t vote [in the legislature], but I have a megaphone,” Munger said, indicating she would keep fighting the good fight and making sure her voice is heard.

The program included a Business Leaders Roundtable, moderated by independent journalist Lisa Leiter. The panelists were: Sean Chou, CEO, Catalytic; Mike Vivoda, Sr. VP and president, West Region, Northwestern Memorial Healthcare; and, Ray Ziganto, president of the manufacturer Bi-Link.

The City of Elmhurst holds a Class 2 Rating with Insurance Service Office, Inc. (ISO) ELMHURST — The City of Elmhurst steadily holds its ISO Class 2 rating from the Insurance Service Office, Inc. (ISO). ISO is a private firm that provides information to insurance companies regarding property/ casualty risk through a number of programs, one of them being the Public Protection Classification Program (PPC). The PPC reviews the fire department, water distribution and dispatch/communication center capabilities.

Based on a scale of 1-10, with “1” being the best rating, the City of Elmhurst has continued to maintain its Class 2 ISO rating for more than 25 years. In 2015, the ISO rated 2,299 communities in Illinois. Of these communities, 76 were ranked, along with the City of Elmhurst, as Class 2.

A community’s ISO class rating is dependent on: • Needed fire flows (the amount of water necessary for fire suppression) • Emergency communications (dispatching) • Fire department (equipment, staffing, training, geographic distribution of fire

companies, operational considerations and community risk reduction) • Water supply (inspection and flowtesting of hydrants, alternative water supply operations and careful evaluation of the amount of available water compared with the amount needed to suppress fires up to 3,500 gallons per minute) “The City of Elmhurst’s Fire Department provides a very high level of fire protection to our community,” said City Manager Jim Grabowski. “We take pride in the fact that the Insurance Service Office recognizes our efforts with a Class 2 rating, which in turn helps keep insurance premiums low for our citizens.”

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

• Sergio D. Lopez, 21, of Elmhurst, was arrested near York and Grantley at around 4:39 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Lopez smelled of alcoholic beverages. He was charged with DUI and no headlights.

Failure to render aid

Battery May 2 Subsequent to a domestic battery report at around 7:58 a.m., officers attempted to calm the suspect, whom police said continued to be extremely combative, and was head-butting and spitting at emergency personnel. An investigation is pending.

City ordinance violation April 23 A complainant in the 400 block of Oaklawn told police they observed a suspect mistreating his pet dog while he was walking it in the park. An officer located the suspect and inspected the animal, but did not observe any indications of animal cruelty. This incident is to be further investigated by the Administrative Service Officer.

Criminal damage to property/motor vehicle/ criminal trespass to property/ motor vehicle/ damage to property May 4 Corey Foster, 22, of Hickory Hills, was arrested in the 100 block of Fellows Court at around 5:03 p.m. and charged with criminal trespass to a residence, battery and criminal damage to property. An investigation is pending.

Disorderly conduct May 1 Bartlomies Kornacki, 43, of Chicago, was arrested at a pub in the 100 block of S. York at around 12:36 a.m. Subsequent to a call for an unwanted person at the pub, police said Kornacki was located. According to police, it was learned that Kornacki was bothering patrons inside the bar and when asked to leave, he became belligerent and threatening toward the security guard.

Kornacki was charged with disorderly conduct.

Domestic battery April 30 A 42-year-old Elmhurst woman was arrested in the 300 block of W. Montrose at around 5:32 p.m. The victim advised an officer that during an argument the suspect scratched his arms and struck him on the head. Visible injuries were observed on the victim. The suspect was charged with domestic battery.

Domestic incident May 2 A complainant in the 100 block of E. Grantley told police she and her ex-

When she refused to answer his questions, she attempted to leave, but the suspect reportedly blocked the door to keep her from leaving and, in the process, broke the necklace she was wearing. An officer spoke with suspect, who stated he wanted her to leave but she refused. He denied blocking the door so she could not leave the house. A report was made for matter of record only.

April 30 A victim at a bank in the 300 block of S. Route 83 told police that her former husband was angry at her. The suspect then came to the victim’s workplace and took a photograph of the victim’s car in the parking lot. The victim was advised of her domestic violence rights.

April 28 Police said a verbal argument turned physical when the victim grabbed the suspect’s face and the suspect grabbed the victim’s arm and placed it behind her back. Both parties separated prior to officers’ arrival and both were found to be mutual combatants. The suspect will be turning 18 soon and plans on living with his father. Order was restored and an officer notified DCFS.

DUI/DUI-drugs/illegal consumption/ possession of alcohol by a minor/public intoxication/hosting an underage drinking party May 3 Benjamin D. Barnett, 28, of Maywood, was arrested at a restaurant in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 2:55 a.m. Police said an officer discovered a vehicle that drove down the embankment and stopped sideways in the driveway of the restaurant. Officers detected a strong odor of cannabis emitting from the suspect, Barnett, who was the driver of the vehicle. Barnett was charged with felony unlawful possession of a controlled substance, DUIdrugs, possession of cannabis, driving off the roadway and no insurance.

April 29 • Christopher Kazmierczak, 21, of Elmhurst, was arrested near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 1:51 a.m.

Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Kazmierczak was found to be DUI. He was charged with DUI, speeding (35plus mph) and failure to signal.

May 4 Louis Podkulski, 67, of Elmhurst, was issued citations near York and Palmer at around 7:28 a.m. for failure to give information and render aid, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage.

Harassment May 3 A victim in the 100 block of S. Kenmore told police that he had been receiving threats from his previous employer, via telephone. The victim believes the calls are coming from his former manager who threatened to sue the victim after he quit three months ago. This case is pending an officer investigation.

April 28 A victim in the 200 block of N. York told police that the wife of one of his employees keeps calling and interrupting the business. An officer left a message for the suspect. An investigation is pending.

Possession of cannabis/drug paraphernalia/controlled substance/tobacco May 2 Sam Schweihs, 23, of Elmhurst, was arrested near Euclid and Meister at around 4:09 p.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Schweihs was found to be in possession of cannabis. He was charged with possession of cannabis, disobeying a stop sign and no seat belt.

May 1 Darryl Woodard, 20, of Lombard, was arrested near North and Route 83 at around 11:56 p.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Woodard was found to be in possession of cannabis, for which he was charged along with tinted windows.

April 29 Police said officers and medics responded to a theater in the 100 block of N. York to the report of a victim who was unconscious but breathing.

CPR was started and the AED was applied without a shock. She was given Narcan® by medics and taken to a local hospital. She admitted to snorting heroin and taking Xanax®, according to police. Police said her boyfriend was in possession of pills, which were sent to a lab for testing.

April 28 Andres Garcia, 21, and Luis Garcia, 19, of Northlake, were arrested at a gas station in the 600 block of W. North at around 12:16 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious auto at the above location, an officer located the two suspects sitting behind a fence.

They were found to be smoking can-

nabis, according to police, and were charged with same.

Sexual assault

May 3 A victim told police that when she was between the ages of 11 and 14, she was the victim of numerous sexual assaults by her music teacher. An investigation is pending.

Suspicious circumstances

April 28 An officer responded to an elementary school in the 500 block of Fairfield for a bullet that was found. Police said a student found the bullet outside. An investigation is pending.

Theft/burglary/ attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/ fraud/forgery/deceptive practice/obstruction/ robbery

May 3 Jason Vicens, 18, of Elmhurst, was arrested in the 300 block of E. North Ave. at around 6:06 p.m. According to police, a victim told police that after opening his bedroom door he was met

by Vicens, who was armed with a glass beer bottle. The victim stated that Vicens allegedly struck him in the head with the bottle. When the victim’s father ran downstairs, police said Vicens fled the scene on foot. Vicens was charged with residential burglary, attempted robbery and aggravated battery.

April 23-May 3 A victim in Elm Creek told police that upon returning home from a trip, she discovered that an unknown suspect(s) entered her locked apartment and removed jewelry from a jewelry box.

May 1 A victim in the 400 block of W. Butterfield told police that while at work she placed her blue canvas tote bag in a cabinet inside a secured storage room.

• A victim in the 100 block of E. First St. told police she received a telephone call where the caller identified himself as an Internal Revenue Service employee.

The caller told the victim that he had a warrant for her arrest and she was instructed to electronically transfer cash and iTunes gift cards. The victim complied with the caller’s demand.

The victim later realized that she had been defrauded.

April 28 • An officer responded to a report of a victim at a pharmacy in the 100 block of N. Palmer Drive being scammed.

Victim was at the pharmacy to wire an unspecified amount of cash to Atlanta.

A few weeks ago, police said the victim also sent an unspecified amount of cash to cover the costs of the suspect fixing a computer issue for her. The victim did not wish to cooperate with officers.

• An anonymous complainant in the 100 block of E. Schiller told police they observed a suspect described as a white male with approximately three boxes of diapers inside of his cart exiting the store without paying for them.

The suspects entered a vehicle and fled northbound towards North Avenue, according to police.

April 27 Police said the owners of a local lawn care business were notified from their employees that equipment was missing from a trailer. The owners believe that while their crew was working in Elmhurst on the above date, they left the doors to the trailer unlocked while working in the backyards. An unknown suspect(s) may have removed the equipment then.

April 7 A victim in the 200 block of Kimball told police that an unknown suspect used his personal information to

open a Comcast account for service to an address in Georgia. The victim informed police that this is the fourth similar incident in which his identity has been compromised.

May 1-May 2 The manager of a tire store in the 500 block of W. North Ave. told police than an unknown suspect(s) dumped a large amount of construction debris in and around their dumpster without permission. After further investigation, an officer was able to determine the name of the company that used their dumpster. An officer left a message for them to return his call.

Excitement times two

ife can be exciting. And stressful. And sometimes exciting things – even though they are good things – create stress. Even though you promise yourself you won’t let them this time.

You know you shouldn’t complain. Excitement is excitement after all. You are aware you should take it all in. Don’t sweat the small stuff (it’s all small stuff) and simply enjoy the milestones that are headed your way. Your logical mind knows this. But knowing and doing are two different things and when you wake up at 2:00 a.m. worrying about invitation lists, plus-ones, napkin colors or whether a popcorn bar beats out a candy buffet you understand that you are not doing well at the celebratory portion of your impending celebration.

My son will graduate from high school in a month. Yay. He made it! Whew!

My daughter will get married two months after his graduation. Yay. She and her fiancé made it! Whew!

But, before I can break out the champagne for a well-deserved toast, we still have things to do.

So many things to do.

We have to get the announcements (graduation) and invitations (wedding) ordered and we have to pick a theme for the party (graduation) not to mention the food and my boys will need suits and shoes (for the wedding) and we’ll want to find some lawn games and extra chairs (for the graduation). Speaking of that we need to rake the lawn and weed the garden before the (graduation)

Reader to columnist: what about environment degradation, overpopulation This is in response to Dee Longfellow’s column of May 5 (Viewpoint, Elmhurst Independent, May 5, 2016 edition) promoting unfettered development in Elmhurst. So we are supposed to put up with all the associated problems because the school colors might have to change if schools have to merge?

Quality of life depends on the availability of clean air and water.

Are we to happily inhale the additional fumes from hundreds of additional vehicles as we observe the new growth? Should we joyfully embrace our flooding issues as more and more green space is paved over?

Has Ms. Longfellow heard of environmental degradation and world overpopulation issues? A new economic theory has emerged in recent years that perhaps we got it wrong. Maybe endless growth is neither desirable nor is it possible.

And don’t tell me I have no right to complain about real estate taxes. You could put Oakbrook shopping center right in the middle of Elmhurst and taxes would continue to rise to obscene levels.

Why? Because the Assessor’s Office can raise them whenever the spirit moves them. And the taxing bodies can ask for whatever they want. We somehow gave them that power.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could assess our employers or social security to give us whatever we feel that we need?

The days will come – and go.

Someone might notice if all the napkins don’t match or if the cake leans slightly or if we run out of pulled pork, but I doubt

it. And even if something does go wrong (and it probably will) and someone actually notices (and they probably won’t), I doubt they’d care enough to even notice that they noticed.

Because when we celebrate, we don’t come to the party for the decorations or the games or the music or even the pulled pork. We come together to congratulate and wish the graduate or the bride and groom all best.

Because we care. It’s as simple as that.

Anything beyond is just icing on the cake – or cupcake, depending on which way we decide to go.

Be in love with being in love and the one you love

love love. I love being in love. I love being loved. I love that I think my husband is handsome, sexy, gorgeous, witty, warm, wise, and super smart. I love that I trust him and respect him. I love that people love how we love.

May 1 is our five-year wedding anniversary. We’ve come a long way since our courtship and we’ve only just begun. I’m grateful for what is and what is yet to come.

We’ve created a joyful peaceful place with trees and gardens that take the blood pressure down a notch.

We’ve traveled all over the United States and a tiny bit of Europe. We play at home too and delight in our kayaks and the bicycle built for two. I love that fun is a priority for my sweet mate.

We still adore each other, more than ever. Maybe it’s because of who we are as positive people or because with age comes wisdom or because it’s the second marriage, but we both choose to see the good in each other.

It might be human nature to find fault in others, but that’s just plain stupid. If you are going to live with someone for the rest of your life, don’t you think you should focus on the good?

I don’t mind that I wipe the fridge door handles every day because they are sticky with something he has concocted.

The man cooks. The man makes the best cocktails ever. The man whips up creative desserts. I will gladly wipe up the sticky as long he keeps playing in the kitchen.

I love that my prince is the most patient man on the planet. Nothing flaps this guy. His depth of understanding me surpasses my own understanding of me. All we women want is someone who gets us. This guy gets me.

He is thoughtful and generous and kind and full of surprises.

He buys the best bling and on any random day, I might find a card and gift left on the kitchen table stating “Happy Wednesday” or something left on my car seat just because. He likes to play music at dinner and light candles and pour wine. Every day is a special occasion. We

use the “good” china for every day just because we like it.

Yeah, I dig him. I feel so safe with him and that is the most freeing thing. We talk about anything and everything. My favorite times are our deep discussions and our sillies.

As much as I like to think we’re special, we are not unique.

There are countless love stories across the land, as it should be.

If you do not adore your partner, or feel adored, don’t despair.

Magic love is possible for all.

Do an experiment. Focus only on the good of that person for the next 30 days. If you are long married and have defaulted to seeing the negative, this will take some work. Give it your full effort, without telling anyone what you are doing, especially your mate.

Choose to see the good.

When you feel irritated and lapse into “he always…” or “she never…”, stop yourself.

Force yourself to find one thing you are thankful for about your partner. Keep at it for 30 days.

See if anything feels different.

Give it another 30 days. The more you give your attention to what you like about that person, the easier living with them gets.

Who knows? You may end up on your next anniversary gushing I LOVE LOVE!

$25 million bond issued to pay for nine storm water projects Low interest makes it good time to finance: Talluto

ELMHURST — City Council has authorized the sale of a 2016 General Obligation Bond issue for $25 million to be used to partially finance nine storm water improvement projects.

The vote was 11-0 with three Council members absent: Marti Deuter (1st Ward), Kevin York (4th Ward) and Chris Healy (5th Ward).

Alderman Noel Talluto (4th Ward), a member of the Finance, Council Affairs and Administrative Services (FCAAS) Committee, said it is

a good time to get this financed because interest rates are at an eight year low.

The FCAAS Committee looked at the option of authorizing two bond issues, one in 2016 and one in 2017 where the bond issue in 2017 would be bank qualified (less than $10 million) and warrant a slightly discounted interest rate.

However, if rates should go up 0.25 percent or more, this option would prove to be a higher cost.

Due to this fact, the FCAAS Committee felt it more prudent to authorize one large bond issue this year, said Ald. Bob Dunn (2nd Ward), vice chairman of the Committee.

He noted that the City Council authorized a 0.25 percent home rule sales tax effective July 1, specifically to pay for

debt service for bonds issued to fund storm water improvement projects.

The process of issuing bonds requires certain insurance costs be incurred, estimated at $200,000. Costs include City and bond counsel, financial advice and rating agency review.

The interest rate for this bond issued is projected to be 2.5 percent to 3 percent.

The bond issue will be competitively bid with a target date of June 6, 2016. A bond ordinance with the final bond sales information will be on the City Council agenda for June 6, 2016.

The City’s total outstanding general obligation debt after this bond issue will be $80,705,000, or slightly less than 4.0 percent of the value of

taxable property in the City of Elmhurst. This falls within the City’s self-prescribed 5 percent debt limit, Dunn noted.

Estimated project costs for the period August 2016 through August 2017 are approximately $28 million. Just under $3 million of the 2015 G.O. bond proceeds have been allocated to those costs, leaving just over $25 million to be funded.

A list of storm water improvement projects that are either currently in process or in the planning stage includes: Geneva, $841,000 with an estimated completion date of August 16; Walnut-Myrtle-Evergreen, $5,207,174, with an estimated completion date of September 16; Washington Detention, $1,050,000, with an estimated

completion date of October 16; York-I-290, $1,142,800, with an estimated completion date of November 16; York Commons, $2,004,130, with an estimated completion date of December 16; Harrison, $2,034,000, with an estimated completion date of December 16; Golden Meadows, agreement in process, $5,252,375 estimated completion date of January 17; Madison,, $3,874,950 with an estimated completion date of March 17; Bryan Middle School gravel lot, agreement in process, $6,750,000.

The total estimated project costs are $28,156,429. The 2015 bond issue of $2,717,446 leaves $25,438,093 to be funded.

ELMHURST — According to a release issued by the Illinois Tollway Authority, there will be a special open house meeting for the public to discuss and learn about the Route 390 Tollway project currently

“The Illinois Tollway is moving forward in 2016 with roadway construction on the eastern segment of the new Illinois Route 390 Tollway from I-290 to Illinois Route 83, including completion of the frontage roads along Illinois Route 390 and construction of new interchanges at Wood Dale Road and Illinois Route 83. In addition, in 2016, work will continue on the I-290 Interchange at Illinois Route 390,” the release read.

The meeting will take place Thursday, May 12 from 4-7 p.m. at Elk Grove Village Hall, 901 Wellington Avenue, Elk Grove Village.

Community members and local businesses are invited to attend to learn more about the upcoming construction and what affect it might have on the area. There will also be information shared by the plan for “cashless tolling” along Route 390 from Lake Street to I-290.

Cashless tolling is planned to begin on July 5.

The meeting will also provide information about the ongoing land acquisition for the Elgin O’Hare Western Access project.

Tollway staff will be on hand at the reception to explain the project and to answer questions, especially those about cashless tolling. The open house is free and open to the public.

Toll collection will begin July 5, 2016, on the first segment of the Illinois Route 390 Tollway from Lake Street (U.S. Route 20) to I-290. The all-electronic tolling gates on the western segment will be located west of Meacham Road/Medinah Road, west of Roselle Road and west of Gary Avenue.

Altogether, there will be six all-electronic tolling places along Illinois Route 390 and on the Ketter Drive entrance ramp.

According to the Tollway Authority, collection points which are closer together reduce the cost of shorter trips and ensure that the rate paid is

fair and equitable.

Tolls for passenger vehicles range from 20 to 60 cents for I-PASS customers. Travelers who take the ramp at the Ketter Drive to enter westbound I-390 will pay 20 cents.

Youth Commission honors Exemplary Youth Volunteers ELMHURST — The City of Elmhurst’s Commission on Youth honored young volunteers at its annual Exemplary Youth Service Awards program held Wednesday, April 27, at Sandburg Middle School.

Ranging in age from elementary through high school, there were 103 nominees, 11 groups and 12 individuals nominated for this year’s awards. Judges were District 205 Assistant Superintendent for Learning and Teaching Dr. Michelle Fitzger-

ald; Director of Community and Government Relations for Edward-Elmhurst Healthcare Diane McGinnis; and Elmhurst Police Deputy Chief Michael McLean.

Speakers included 2015 Exemplary Youth Service Award recipients and Churchville Middle School 8th graders Emily Belcher and Brenton Russo, as well as the senior captains of the 2016 York High School All-Youth Relay for Life Team of Jacob Evans, Josh Hovance,

Fatal accident on Addison Street

BENSENVILLE — According to a report issued by the Bensenville Police Department, on Thursday, April 28, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of So. Addison St. at about 1:26 p.m. to investigate a single-car accident in which a vehicle reportedly hit a tree with power lines down.

Tianna K. Ramirez, 26, of the 400 block of S. Miner St., was the sole occupant of the vehicle. She was extricated from the car and was treated at the scene for unknown injuries.

Police said, Ramirez was transported to the Loyola Hospital emergency room, where she was pronounced dead. No further information was available at press time.

The DuPage County Accident Reconstruction Team (DuCART) is assisting in the investigation of this case.

Recent bills include eliminating Lt. Governor, funding roads, insure birth control

ELMHURST — Last week, the Independent learned about several bills and proposed legislation moving forward in the House and the Senate in Springfield.

Does Illinois need the office of Lt. Governor?

One measure is projected to save Illinois approximately $1.6 million per year, if passed.

A proposal to eliminate the Office of the Lieutenant Governor has passed the Illinois House of Representatives and is now awaiting action in the Senate. The decision in this case however will ultimately be decided by taxpayers them-

selves.

The legislation is a House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 5, which would appear on the ballot this coming fall, asking the voters whether or not the office should be eliminated. Proponents of the measure argue the lieutenant governor’s office has no specific duties or responsibilities and offers little benefit to the taxpayers for the $1.6 million.

Opponents feel the Lieutenant Governor’s programs and duties substantiate the costs.

If passed in the Senate, the measure will let the voters decide if they would approve of a Constitutional Amendment, eliminating the Office

of the Lieutenant Governor in Illinois.

Gas tax revenue to be used exclusively for roads, transportation Another recommendation for a constitutional amendment passed the Illinois House last week.

House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 36 would ensure that any tax revenue collected through the gas tax could only be used for the improvement of Illinois transportation systems and not for any other purpose.

According to Kathleen Willis (D-Addison), in the past, the General Assembly has taken

funds designated for transportation purposes and used them on unrelated items.

Not surprising, the measure is supported by organized labor and business groups for the purpose of protecting jobs, especially those in construction.

Proposed bill assures insurance coverage for contraception Another proposal that passed the State House this past week would guarantee women access to the full range of contraceptive options under their health care insurance in Illinois. Proponents of the bill say it would assure that women are not

being improperly charged for birth control.

Passage of House Bill 5576 would bring Illinois law into alignment with current federal statutes. Insurance companies have been accused of using loopholes in federal health care laws to not cover birth control, even though the practice is forbidden if the contraception is approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA).

This bill was drafted to model the requirements of the federal Affordable Care Act. Proponents of the bill argue this legislation will help to clarify current laws about which contraception medications are covered by insurance.

ELMHURST — “I saved my sister’s life. That’s it,” said 11-year-old Sam Braafhart.

Quite the understatement, says his mother, Elmhurst resident Courtney Braafhart.

“As the oldest brother of three younger sisters, we knew Sam would protect them, but thought it would be when the girls were in high school and going to prom…not when little Hailey was three,” said Braafhart.

A couple of days before Easter, Sam pulled his sister from an indoor pool at his grandmother’s townhouse pool. As his nanny called 9-1-1 and gave him instructions, Sam began chest compressions on three-year-old sister Hailey.

Sam had just finished a cannonball, when he heard his nanny yell, “Get Hailey!”

“I ran alongside of the pool and I jumped back in to grab her,” recalled Sam. “She was unconscious and starting to turn colors…she was on the steps… I don’t know what she was trying to do, but I pulled her out.”

Sam remembers bringing Hailey up the pool stairs and lying her on her back.

“I was pressing on her chest, and Kristin [the nanny] was telling me what to do. I don’t really remember all the details. But [Hailey] wasn’t talking and wasn’t breathing at first. Kristin gave her mouth-to-mouth [resuscitation] and I gave her CPR, and now she’s here!

First responders arrived within two minutes and later commented how impressive it was for Sam to stay so calm. At that time, Hailey had a pulse; they were able to suction her airway and transport her to the hospital.

Hailey doesn’t remember much, but has noticed a lot more hugs from her big brother since the incident.

Mom gets the word, must return to hospital Courtney Braafhart said she’s still coming to grips with the chain of events that Easter weekend.

“I was working and got Kristin’s call and she told me to go straight to hospital,” she said. “I walked in [to the ER] and I could hear crying, but thought to myself, ‘that’s not Hailey – that sounds like a baby.’

“But it was her. At that point doctors were checking

They treated us like family.”

Sadly, the family’s time at Elmhurst Hospital didn’t end with Hailey’s recovery. The next day, Courtney was called to the hospital yet again.

“When I got [there], one of the same medics that took care of Hailey was there with my mom.” she said.

Braafhart’s mom, Dare Messina, was a tireless volunteer and a well-known, successful real estate agent in town.

“She had fallen earlier in the day going into her townhouse,” she said. “My mom still hadn’t recovered entirely [from a previous illness] over the last nine months, but she was doing really well. She must have fallen really hard, and she hit her head…but still went to take this real estate test, saying she was fine. She got 90’s on all three tests and she was so excited.”

But shortly after the exams, Messina collapsed and never recovered.

“The irony is before my mom fell, I didn’t tell her about what happened at the pool until I

knew Hailey was going to be okay,” said Braafhart. “In fact when I told her that the nanny was going to take the kids to the pool on Good Friday, my mom said, ‘that sounds dangerous.’

“We only had hours to think about [Hailey and Sam] and then it was old news in our house. I think [Sam saving Hailey] was a gift from God for us to have something happy to think about while dealing with the loss of Mom.” After services were held for Messina, the City and the Elmhurst Fire Department presented Sam a “Life-Saving Award” plaque that read “Best Big Brother for Life” at a City Council meeting.

Visitation School room moms held a “Sam-a-bration” in the fifth-grade classrooms, where the kids enjoyed pizza and celebrated Sam. “Everyone made me cards.

[The party] was very unexpected,” he said. “I still haven’t had a chance to read all the cards.”

One thing Courtney Braafhart says Sam always has time for, now more than ever, is Hailey.

“He’s always asking where Hailey is. We are so proud of him,” she said. “He’s a special kid – always has been.”

IC Catholic Prep softball team defeats Timothy Christian York’s Gill headed to state gymnastics meet

ELMHURST — The IC Catholic Prep softball team recorded a 16-9 win over neighbor Timothy Christian as part of the annual Crosstown Cup series between the two schools.

The two teams combined for 22 hits. Timothy led 5-4 at one point in the third inning.

Josie Lytton led the Knights, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored, four RBI and two stolen bases. She also had a double. Natalie Murillo scored three runs and had a hit. Kayla Faber-Cournane had a hit and two runs scored. Kaitlyn Falduto went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Alyssa Borges scored two runs.

Georgia Mahnke had a double and two runs scored. Kasey Carver had two RBI and a run scored. Kalya Cervantes went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, a run scored and an RBI. Taylor Salvi was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Falduto was the winning pitcher in relief. She struck out four over three innings. FaberCournane threw 3 1/3 innings of relief and had five strikeouts.

Timothy’s Hope Zastrow went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Olivia Schuringa and Jordan McDonald each had an RBI. Lauren Gehrke went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Anita Duncan had a double and two RBI. Madi Garcia stole two bases.

Emily Gifford took the loss.

She struck out five.

In earlier Timothy action, the Trojans lost 10-9 in eight innings to Elmwood Park. The Trojans scored one run in the eighth, but Elmwood Park scored a pair in the bottom of the inning.

Eloisa Arcos went 2-for-4 with four runs scored. Allison Heersink had two walks and a run scored. Zastrow had a hit, scored three runs and walked twice. Schuringa had a hit, a run scored and four RBI. Gifford took the loss. She struck out nine over 7 2/3 innings.

In a loss to Guerin Prep, Zastrow was 2-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base. Gehrke had two RBI, a hit and a run scored. Schuringa had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Heersink also had a hit. Gifford struck out four.

In a loss to Chicago Christian, Bianca Jimenez had a stolen base. Gifford took the loss.

York boys gymnastics York sophomore John Gill is headed to the IHSA boy’s gymnastics state finals. Gill tied for second place on still rings with an 8.55 score and earned an automatic state berth.

York finished fifth in the sectional as a team with a 136.8 score.

York’s Fowler shuts out Lyons Township Dukes improve to 9-6 in WSC Silver play

ELMHURST — The York baseball team split a recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division doubleheader with Lyons Township.

York won the finale 7-0 behind Cole Miller’s four-hit shutout pitching performance. He struck out four and threw 59 of 92 pitches for strikes.

Cam Fowler had a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Marc Thieme went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Matt Riecker walked twice, had a hit and scored a run. Phil Schlitter had a double and two RBI. Joe Polowsky had a hit and a run scored. Frank Romano had a hit and scored a run.

York improved to 15-10 overall and 9-6 in WSC Silver play.

York dropped the opener 4-3 to Lyons at the Lyons Township South Campus.

York scored all its runs in the seventh inning. The Dukes had nine hits.

Fowler had two hits (including a double) and a run scored. Thieme went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Riecker (double), Schlitter, Josh Hovance, Mike O’Malley and Joey Chiappetta each had a hit.

In other recent action, the Dukes scored a 6-5 WSC crossover win against Leyden. York had nine hits. Fowler went 3-for-5 with a double and five RBI. Riecker went 2-for-4. Kevin Lipkin and Hovance each had a hit, while O’Malley went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. York stole four bases.

Austin Gelsomino pitched two innings of relief and earned the win. Nick Lee pitched the seventh and struck out one to earn the save. Will Dvorak, Fowler and Burke Corcoran also pitched in the game.

In a 4-3 WSC Silver win against Glenbard West, York scored a run in the seventh inning to win the game. The Dukes had eight hits.

Thieme went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Riecker and Hovance each had a hit, while Lee went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBI. Lipkin had a hit and an RBI, while Chiappetta had two hits.

Riecker picked up the win after going six innings and striking out seven with no walks. Brennan McGovern pitched the seventh inning to earn the save.

In an 11-4 WSC Silver loss to Hinsdale Central, York was limited to five hits.

Fowler had a hit, two runs scored and walked three times. Riecker added two RBI. Schlitter hit a triple, walked twice and had an RBI. Gelsomino also drove in a run. Miller took the loss.

York was scheduled to wrap up its WSC Silver slate earlier this week with games against Lyons Township, Hinsdale Central and Glenbard West. York hosts Morton today and Willowbrook Friday in a pair of WSC crossover games.

A win against Lyons would give the Dukes four WSC Silver series wins this season.

York badminton team wins sectional title Dukes’ girls soccer team scores conference wins against OPRF and Glenbard West

ELMHURST — Another year and another sectional title for the York girls badminton team.

The Dukes scored 16 team points en route to winning their own York sectional title. It was the 11th sectional title in a row for York coach Nicole Young.

York again advanced five players out of a maximum of six to this weekend’s state finals meet in Charleston.

Julia Dierksheide won the sectional singles title, while the doubles team of Irin Abraham and Grace Mazzocco won the doubles title. Teammates Rosie O’Connor and Kathryn Novak took third and also advanced to the doubles state tournament.

Dierksheide won her first match 21-6, 21-9 and won her second match 21-10, 21-7. She won the sectional title with a 16-21, 21-11, 21-7 win over Dana Gallegos of Chicago Noble-Golder.

Abraham and Mazzocco won their first match 20-22, 21-7, 21-6. In the semifinals Abraham and Mazzocco won 21-10, 24-22 and then beat a team from Deerfield 23-21, 17-21, 24-22 in the championship match.

O’Connor and Novak won their first match 21-16, 21-15 and then lost 21-15, 21-14.

They rebounded to win their third match by a score of 17-21, 21-10, 21-18. In the thirdplace match against Deerfield, O’Connor and Novak scored an 18-21, 21-15, 21-14 victory.

In earlier action, both the York varsity and junior-varsity teams won the West Suburban Conference Silver Division championship.

In the win against Oak ParkRiver Forest, Madison Casey scored the overtime game-winner on an assist from Jenna Lundgren.

Against Glenbard West, the two teams played to a 0-0 tie after regulation. Lundgren, Rachel Teague, Jenna Dvorak and Kaylin Kenny each had a

goal in the penalty kicks phase.

“The team is continuing to gel and bring up the intensity to make a strong playoff run,” said York interim coach Stevan Dobric.

Dobric lauded the recent play of Casey and Brianna Suchy.

“Madison has really brought up the energy level on the field and so has Brianna,” he said.

“Their intensity is infectious and needed as we move forward. Also, as a team everyone continues to push each other every training session.”

Dobric noted York has 11 players who have scored a goal this season and 10 players who have at least one assist.

“It’s truly a team effort,” he said.

Young IC Catholic Prep softball team improving Gonzalez, Lytton leading the way at the plate

The youthful IC Catholic Prep softball team is learning on the job.

The Knights were 9-11 overall and 2-6 in Metro Suburban Conference West Division play through late last week.

“We’re a young team,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Frank

Reaber. “We’re hitting the ball and scoring runs, but we’re still making a lot of errors. We have a long way to go, but we are working at it.”

At the plate, the Knights have been led by the likes of Melissa Gonzalez an Josie Lytton.

“Melissa and Josie have been hitting the ball really well,” said Reaber. “Melissa always hits third and Josie gets moved around in the order. They have been pretty consistent.”

The Knights continue to work hard on the defensive aspect of the game. “Defensively we always have a bad inning,

but that’s getting better,” said Reaber. “We beat Fenton 6-4 and they could have had a big inning. We held them and we hit the ball well.”

Georgia Mahnke also has been hitting well of late, along with Kaitlyn Falduto.

“We start three freshmen and two sophomores,” said Reaber. “They are going to keep improving. We’re moving kids around and seeing where we can play them.”

Freshman pitcher Kayla Faber-Cournane also is improving in the circle. “She’s a 14-year-old pitcher on the

varsity,” said Reaber. “She’s getting better.”

Reaber added IC Catholic Prep’s 9-11 record easily could be well into the above-.500 category.

“We gave away three games in the seventh inning and in probably six of our losses we had a lead going into the sixth inning,” he said. “We have one bad inning. It might be nerves from being such a young team.

We don’t know how to put teams away yet, but we will get there.”

IC Catholic Prep will host its annual tournament Friday

and Saturday. The tournament features Sterling, Morrison, Momence, Burlington Central, Chicago Christian, Aurora Christian and Hinsdale South.

“There are a lot of good teams,” said Reaber. “We don’t want to play any cupcakes. In our conference almost everybody is either Class 3A or 4A. We play a tough schedule and that only will make us better when we get to the Class 2A playoffs.”

IC Catholic Prep will host a regional this season. The Knights drew the No. 2 seed behind Elgin St. Edward.

Bats hot for Timothy Christian baseball team Trojans pound out a combined 37 hits in two games

he Timothy Christian baseball team had a pair of recent strong offensive outings in contests against Elgin St. Edward and Chicago Christian.

In an 11-1 win over St. Edward, the Trojans had 16 hits and scored eight runs over the final three innings.

Noah Marrera had a double for the Trojans.

Brian Schiff was the winning pitcher. St. Edward was held to only two hits.

In a 13-3 win over Chicago Christian, the Trojans had 21 hits. Timothy led 5-0 after two innings and then scored 8 runs over the final three innings.

Schiff homered in the game and Joey Davidson had two doubles. Jimmy Allen, Josh Anderson and Jimmy Brush each had a double.

Shaun VanTholen was the winning pitcher.

The Trojans took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Allen singled and scored on a Josh Anderson triple. Anderson later scored on a Brush groundout. Davidson then singled, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a Schiff single and outfield error.

IC Catholic Prep scored a run in the third and then took the lead in the fourth. Timothy tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth.

Three consecutive singles by Patrick Roelofs, Connor Gwaltney and Nick Huisman loaded the bases. Roelofs scored on an Allen RBI groundout.

The Knights won the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Huisman took the loss.

In other action, Timothy dropped an 8-1 game to Riverside-Brookfield. The Trojans were held to five hits. Roelofs took the loss.

He also had a double at the plate.

Timothy also lost 4-1 to Chicago Christian in the first game of a two-game series. The Trojans had three hits. Allen took the loss.

Timothy finished its Metro Suburban Conference East Division slate with an 11-8 record.

The Trojans were 14-11 overall through late last week.

Timothy has home non-conference games scheduled this week against Aurora Christian and Northridge Prep (today at 4:30 p.m.). The Trojans will host a regional next week.

York boys volleyball team places third at own invitational Dukes also score recent wins against Hinsdale South and Willowbrook

ELMHURST — The York boys volleyball team took third at its own recent York invitational.

In pool play, York downed Joliet Central 25-14, 25-20 and Reavis 25-23, 26-24. York capped a perfect run in pool play with a 25-17, 25-22 win over Oak Forest.

In the championship bracket, the Dukes lost 25-15, 25-21 to Hinsdale Central and then came back to defeat the Glenbard West junior varsity team 27-25, 27-25 in the third-place match.

In other recent action, the Dukes recorded a 27-25, 27-25 West Suburban Conference crossover win against Hinsdale South.

Jake Wendell led the Dukes with 13 kills and seven digs. He hit .400 in the match. Bobby Krissinger had seven kills and hit .385. Rio Diaz dished out 23 assists and Michael Pennel had three blocks. Sam JordanWood had nine digs. The Dukes improved to 7-7 overall after the

Hinsdale South win.

In a 25-21, 25-13 WSC crossover loss to Downers Grove South, Krissinger had six kills and two blocks. Wendell had five kills. Diaz had 11 assists, while AJ Weber had eight digs. Zach Hughart had six digs.

In a 25-22, 25-23 WSC crossover win against Willowbrook, Diaz had 15 assists and two service aces.

Pennel had six kills. John Schierl had five kills and Krissinger had five digs.

In a 29-31, 25-22, 25-23 WSC Silver Division loss to Downers Grove North, Wendell had 12 kills and two aces. Andrew Lewand had nine kills and four blocks. Krissinger had seven kills and three blocks, while Jake Privett had seven kills, eight digs and three blocks. Diaz had 37 assists and 10 digs. Pennel had three blocks and Weber had 13 digs.

In a 23-25, 25-23, 25-22 WSC crossover loss to Morton, Diaz had two aces and 21 assists. Krissinger had 12 kills and 12 digs. Wendell had 12 kills, two blocks and 12 digs.

John Goehl had 18 assists, while Weber had 16 digs.

In recent times, York coach Ken Dowdy has been pleased with the team’s progress with its servereceive.

“It has helped us against the premier teams in the state,” Dowdy said recently. “Likewise, we’ve been really aggressive on our serve, which has helped keep other teams out of system and has allowed for a more effective block.”

Dowdy noted the team has been hard at work on blocking throughout the season. “We have struggled at times with our block and with consistency in running our offense against bigger blocks,” he explained.

“Once we can shore up those two areas we should be back on the right track. We have players who are working really hard to improve. That is all a coach can ask for.”

Getting the team’s middle blockers further involved in the offense also has been a point of emphasis. “Our offense has been pretty consistent this season, but we recognize we need to get our middle attackers more involved so we can open up the pins,” said Dowdy. “Our middle hitters Andrew Lewand and Michael Pennel have the ability to take over matches when we are in system, but we just need to run them more often.”

Weber and Hughart lead the way on the defensive end for the Dukes with Gordon Johnson and Danny Bolivar providing key hands in

reserve roles as well.

York has been working of late with three setters in Diaz, Goehl and Privett, who has returned to the position he played as a freshman and sophomore. “We have three really hard-working setters,” said Dowdy. “We just need a little more consistency. They all are great kids who work hard and continue to get better each week.”

Dowdy cited recent strong play from Privett, Pennel and Johnson in particular. “Jake really has turned it up a notch the past few weeks defensively and with his blocking,” he said. “Jake is a kid who has a lot of spirit on and off the court and that contributes to a lot of energy with the team. Michael continues to improve with his attack and closing the block and Gordon has added a spark defensively as well.”

Dowdy also lauded the team’s character. “I really have enjoyed being around this group of kids,” he said. “They are not only funny, but are great kids overall. We’ve struggled a little bit, but I’m sure we’ll get it figured out as we get closer to the playoffs. This team has the potential to reach the state tournament if they are willing to put in the work, which I’m sure they will.”

IC Catholic Prep track teams continue to excel Caputo named Knights’ dance team coach

ELMHURST — Both IC Catholic Prep track teams had individual successes at the recent Chicago Christian invitational.

In the girls’ meet, sophomore Kiersten King won the 200 in 27.07. The Knights’ 400 relay team of Kerry Mulligan, Jaida Smith, Katie Harvey and King was second in 53.36 and the same team took third in the 800 relay with a time of 1:53.82.

Freshman Jaida Smith was second in the triple jump with a mark of 32-8 1/2.

On the boys’ side, junior Jordan Rowell continued his impressive spring. He was first in the 100 at 10.8, first in the 200 at 22.4 and also first in the long jump with a leap of 20-4.

Knights coach Bob Cronin noted Rowell was disqualified in the 400 for a false start, “where he was favored to win as well,” he said.

IC Catholic Prep also won the 400 relay with a time of

45.03. That group ingincluded Luke Ricobene, Lazerick Eatman, Luke Calles and Aaron Taylor. The same group won the 800 relay in 1:34.81.

Other key efforts for the Knights included Luke Ricobene, a sophomore, finishing second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.62. His brother, senior Jack Ricobene, was third in the 110 hurdles at 16.73.

The IC Catholic Prep 1,600 relay team of Calles, Will Lyles, Taylor and Luke Ricobene placed second with a time of 3:37.35.

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer The IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team scored a recent 4-0 win over Guerin Prep to improve to 10-6-3 on the season. The win against Guerin was the team’s fifth in a row.

Grace Fuller led the Knights with two goals. Olivia Hurt and Courtney McCarthy each had one goal. Gabby Smola recorded her second shutout of the season.

In earlier action, the Knights downed De La Sale 3-2 in overtime. Freshman Olivia Hurt had two goals, while junior Katie Hendricks had the game-

winning goal in overtime.

The Knights also scored a recent 5-3 win over Fenton.

Caputo named ICCP dance coach IC Catholic Prep recent announced the hiring of Lauren Caputo as head dance team coach.

Caputo attended Purdue University where she majored in speech-language hearing sciences and was a member of the Golduster Dance Team, serving as team captain for two years. While at Purdue she was responsible for all choreography at sporting events, including football, men’s and women’s basketball, soccer and wrestling.

“I am honored to have been offered this opportunity at IC Catholic Prep,” said Caputo in an IC Catholic Prep news release. “I am looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life and continuing the tradition of success at ICCP.” Caputo also is a graduate of Lake Park High School in Roselle where she both choreographed and captained the Lancette’s dance team for two years with two of her routines

Under the direction of Mary Pilalis, owner and director of Aspire Dance Co. from Center Stage Dance Studio, Caputo was a national champion in 2008 and her solo placed in the top three at nationals from 2009-2012.

In 2011, Caputo became the director of Integrity Dance Co., where she won three choreography awards and had three soloists win national titles. She has worked with many high school dance programs in Illinois and most recently helped the Sycamore High School dance team finish third at the 2015-2016 IHSA state finals.

“We are excited to welcome Lauren to our coaching staff

and look forward to her leadership in our dance program,” said IC Catholic Prep athletic director Tom Schergen in the news release. “Our dance program has achieved a great amount of success in recent years and I am confident the experience and enthusiasm Lauren will bring will help her continue the positive direction of our program.”

Schergen also lauded the efforts of former coach Elyse Skalka. “I also would like to thank Elyse for her six years as head coach of our dance team,” he said. “She did a tremendous job bringing our program to new heights and we wish her the very best in her new endeavors.”

Ramirez headed to Knox College IC Catholic Prep senior thrilled to play basketball at the next level

ELMHURST — A change of heart unlocked an important door for IC Catholic Prep senior boys basketball player Angel Ramirez.

Ramirez originally had committed to an NAIA school in the Midwest, however after reconsideration he ended up recently signing a National Letter of Intent to attend and play basketball at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. “Basketball is big to me and my family and I feel Knox will set me up for my future,” said Ramirez. “Knox has a great history and it will help me if I want to play basketball after college whether it’s overseas or in some professional league.

Plus, the academic side of things at Knox is excellent. My parents have always put it in my head that academics come first. Knox is great academically. This is the right place for me.”

Ramirez said plenty of hours in the gym paid off. “Sometimes during the season or in the off-season the coaches and I would be putting in a lot of work and it seemed like nothing was coming out of it,” he said.

“But looking back and seeing I was able to take it to the next level and play four more years is amazing. This means everything to me. It shows our hard work finally paid off. I get to do what I love for four more years.”

Ramirez is leaning toward a business communications major at Knox. “I’ve spoken to some family members and friends about good fields to get into and I’m pretty sure this is what I’m leaning toward,” he said.

The IC Catholic Prep senior said his time at the Elmhurst high school helped him on several fronts.

“IC Catholic Prep has been home the past four years,” he said. “It’s going to feel weird being in a different town and area. I will definitely miss it.

Academically they did everything to help me. The teachers taught me things such as writing and giving a speech.

They taught me life skills. The teachers were tremendous. It’s a rigorous school, but it has set me up well for college.

“Athletically, the basketball program had success before I got here. A lot of guys before me put in hard work. I used that as an example and once I became a varsity member I made sure I worked my butt off and that hard work paid off. The program showed me you have to be a full basketball player on the court and off it.

IC Catholic Prep showed me how to be a good young man.”

Lamborn chooses St. Norbert College Senior will continue his football career at Division III school

ELMHURST — Familiarity ultimately led IC Catholic Prep senior Jack Lamborn to the next chapter in his football career.

Lamborn recently signed his National Letter of Intent to attend and play football at St. Norbert College, an NCAA Division III school in De Pere, Wis. “I got a call from the coach there and I know a lot of people that went there—friends and family members,” said Lamborn.

After meeting with the football staff, Lamborn came away impressed. “I love the coaching staff there and I like the players. They are great people,” he said. “It’s a good program and I like the school in general. It’s very nice.”

Lamborn has had college football on the mind since a young age. “This is awesome. It’s something I wanted to do since I was a little

kid,” he said. “It means a lot. It’s been a goal of mine and I’m happy to be able to do this. I’ve always thought you could do anything if you work hard. If you work hard then anything is possible. I’m thankful the coaches at (ICCP) prepared me well enough to get up there.”

Lamborn, recruited to St. Norbert as an offensive lineman, is thankful for his time in the Knights’ football program.

“The football program was awesome,” he said. “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I loved every minute and every second. It all was worth it. They taught me how to be a man and live your life the right way and not make mistakes and bad decisions. I learned life lessons. The coaching staff was great. We came in and they told us what to do and worked with us. They were there to give their time to us and we worked hard for them and produced.”

In fact, Lamborn said he’ll miss the entire IC Catholic Prep experience. “I’m going to miss it all,” he said. “It was a great place that had a community feeling. At the same time, I’m looking forward to moving on. It’s going to be a good time there (at St. Norbert). I’m looking forward to the next chapter.”

York boys tennis team shuts out Leyden

ELMHURST — The York boys tennis team scored a recent 9-0 victory over West Suburban Conference Gold Division entrant Leyden at Leyden’s West campus in Northlake.

Austin Taylor was a 6-1, 4-6, (10-5) winner at No. 1 singles for York. JackJulian was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles.

Luke Brigman was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 3 singles, while Luke Mazzocco was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 4 singles.

Lucas Gough and Jacob Wit were 6-0, 6-0 winners at No. 1 doubles. Tom Vogt and Jimmy Licata were 6-0, 6-1 winners at

No. 2 doubles. Tommy Naples and Johnny Wheeler won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles, while Josh Mirretti and Kevin Rachwalski were 6-2, 6-2 winners at No. 4 doubles. Jared Doan and Matt Dillon won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 doubles.

York moved to 11-9 overall with the win.

In earlier play, the Dukes scored a 5-2 non-conference win against Summit Argo. York won all five doubles matches to secure the dual-meet win.

Vogt and Wit were 6-1, 6- 1 winners at No. 1 doubles. Doan and Licata won 3-6, 6-1, (10-4) at No. 2 doubles. Naples and Wheeler were 6-2, 6-0 winners at No. 3 doubles. Brigman

and Taylor won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles, while Mirretti and Mazzocco won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 doubles.

York also dropped a 4-3 nonconference contest to Libertyville at Berens Park. Julian was a 7-6 (2), 4-6, (10-8) winner at No. 2 singles. Taylor was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 3 singles.

Mirretti and Rachwalski were 6-3, 2-6, (10-8) winners at No. 4 doubles.

Through late last week, Taylor was leading the team in wins with 14. Naples, Wheeler and Mirretti each had 14 wins.

Wit had 12 wins, while Brigman had 10 wins. Rachwalski, Gough and Vogt each had nine wins.

York girls water polo team closing in on 20 wins Achepohl leading the Dukes on offense

ELMHURST — The York girls water polo team has its radar directly pointed at the upcoming IHSA postseason.

Through late last week, the Dukes were 19-7 overall and went 3-2 in the tough West Suburban Conference. York’s only conference losses were to Lyons Township by two goals in the second game of the season and by three goals to Oak Park-River Forest in one of the first games back after spring break.

York has received key con-

tributions throughout the season from the likes of Grace Achepohl and Sarah Lewand.

“Grace has been, by far, our most consistent offensive player this season,” said York coach Mark Guiliani. “Sarah is our junior goalie and has played outstanding. She’s been consistent and makes the long passes down the pool that helps us get a lot of fast breaks.”

In addition to Achepohl, the Dukes also have been bolstered on offense by the likes of Carli York, Maggie Schlecht and Mary Phelps.

Guiliani said the team’s defense has stepped to the forefront this spring. “Defense

has been our strongest part,” he said. “Sometimes we struggle on the offensive end, but our defense has been very sound. We communicate well. Sarah Lewand communicates very well and Grace and Carli have been big helps on defense. They lock girls down and don’t let anybody get inside. They are good physical players.”

Sophomore Sydney Hutchinson also has made major strides. “She’s a sophomore I’m excited about,” said Guiliani. “She started on the frosh-soph team and was brought up and is going to be a starter for us. She’s a young player on a junior-senior

team. She’s been very consistent. She plays the hole-set position and is a shooter with a strong arm.”

Guliani also raves about the leadership displayed on the team. “The leadership displayed by players such as Grace, Carli and Mary has been great,” he said. “They do a good job of providing excellent leadership. These past years have been building to this point. Grace is a four-year varsity player and Carli and Ellie Fitzpatrick are three-year varsity players. The leadership is so strong. The girls know each other well and are friends. The chemistry we have is very strong.”

York opens play in its own York sectional today against Chicago Taft. York is the No. 3 seed in the sectional behind Oak Park-River Forest (No. 1) and Fenwick (No. 2).

“We know we have a tough road ahead in the sectional,” said Guiliani. “The girls are confident and they have a chip on their shoulder. They feel like we’ve always been overlooked. There is some extra motivation going into this.”

If York wins against Taft, it will play Fenwick on Friday at home. “Fenwick is a very accomplished program and we’re excited for the opportunity to face them,” said Guiliani.

ELMHURST — The York boys track team recently competed in he 48th Prospect Wanner Knight Invitational.

Charlie Kern Jr. won the 800 with a time of 1:55.53. Devin Davies was ninth in the event with a time of 2:02.03.

Kern Jr. already is well under the state-qualifying time in the 800 (1:57.27).

In the 100 dash, York’s Suny Kurian took 16th with a time of 11.79. Max Denning was eighth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:23.76. Tom Devereux took 11th with a time of 4:27.69. State-qualifying time in the mile in Class 3A is 4:21.42.

Senior Kevin Falkenberg was 11th in the 200 with a time of 23.96. Andrew Kelley placed 18th with a time of 24.46.

Jon May was third in the 3,200 with a time of 9:33.53 and Sean MacGregor was fourth with a time of 9:36.50.

Kurt Namini was sixth in the 400 with a time of 50.81 (state-qualifying time in the 400 in

Class 3A is 50.81). Liam Herrera was 16th at 53.84.

York was 11th in the 400 relay with a time of 44.16. The Dukes took 10th in the 800 relay with a time of 1:33.28.

York took fifth in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:27.52 and was third in the 3,200 relay with a time of 7:55.10.

Gabe Lewis took 15th in the high jump at 5-7.

Connor Murphy was second in the pole vault at 13-7 (which ties the Class 3A state-qualifying standard). Ethan Kett took eighth at 12-9.

Cal Widener was ninth in the shot put at 48-11.

Chase Stephens was 18th at 43-9. York was seventh in the sprint medley relay with a time of 3:48.30.

“We have two sophomores (Meager and Wojick) and a freshman (Derkowski). They are hanging in there. They all got some experience against Oak Park-River Forest. They are figuring things out and doing really well. They work together. One might pitch four

Nolan also cited recent strong play from Magnifico and Hanrahan. “It’s nice to see Gabby doing really well,” she said.
