All lined up at Silverado Jr. These students from Lincoln School are lined up at the bar inside Silverado Restaurant to receive instructions about servicing customers during their Silverado Jr. experience. The annual program allows Lincoln 5th graders to write a business plan, obtain a “loan” to “lease” the restaurant for one evening and serve customers (mostly their parents). The class receives the profits and makes a decision about what to do with it. Silverado Jr. has been going on for more than 25 years. More photos inside this issue.

Elected officials sworn in at May 1 City Council meeting

A number of elected officials took the oath of office at the City Council meeting held on Monday, May 1. Those who were sworn in included Mayor Steve Morley, City Clerk Patty Spencer, Treasurer Elaine Libovicz, and Aldermen Marti Deuter (1st Ward), Norman Leader (2nd Ward), Michael Bram (3rd Ward), Kevin York (4th Ward), Tina Park (5th Ward), Jim Kennedy (6th Ward), and Michael Brennan (7th Ward).

Mayor Morley, re-elected for his 2nd term as mayor, was sworn in by Clerk Spencer. Mayor Morley then swore in the other nine elected officials, seven of whom were re-elected from their previous term.

New to Elmhurst’s City Council includes 5th Ward Alderman Tina Park and 7th Ward Alderman Michael Brennan.

She grew up in Streamwood and attended the University of Chicago, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Tina Park Masters in the Art of Teaching Mathematics. She has worked in human resources and talent recruitment, as well as teaching mathematics.

Park has been married to her husband Adam for 22 years and has four children, Sophia, Josie, Aaron, and Caroline. She has been very active in the District 205 schools, organizing events that bring the community together and assisting in teaching in the classrooms whenever possible.

ligious education, and coaching basketball through the YMCA. Her other interests include running, learning to play the ukulele and traveling.

With all four kids in school fulltime, Park says she is at a point where she can start a new endeavor and feels very proud to represent Elmhurst and the 5th Ward.

She is looking forward to being a positive advocate for the neighborhood, residents and businesses, and giving back to the Elmhurst community, which means so much to her family.

More about Michael Brennan An Elmhurst resident for 23 years, Brennan is happy to serve Elmhurst as alderman in the 7th Ward with the simple goal of assuring that Elmhurst remains a terrific place to live for all current and future residents.

Brennan has been married to his wife Kathy Morin Brennan for 23

years. One of the best decisions made in their lifetime was moving to Elmhurst to raise their four children – Callie, Sam, Greta, and John. Great residents, schools and Michael Brennan parks were the reasons to move to the local community.

He is a Senior Director at Workday, a software company based out of Pleasanton Calif., however, Brennan is responsible for consulting for the central region of the United States. He has been in the consulting business for 30 years, starting with Andersen Consulting (Accenture) in 1987.

After growing up in Kendallville Indiana, Brennan graduated from East Noble High School and is a proud graduate of Purdue Universi-

ty where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business and played baseball.

He enjoys all sports and has been coaching his kids in basketball and baseball. He’s been an Elmhurst Baseball & Softball League Board member for the past eight years.

Brennan is also an active member of the Visitation Father’s Club, which raises money for Visitation School.

During the years he lived in Chicago, he was a member of the Chicago Jaycees and served a term as President.

As he looks forward to serving the 7th Ward, Brennan has pledged to listen to the residents, represent their concerns and work to address issues in the best possible way. Public safety, flood abatement, thriving commerce and common sense city growth represent his interests and priorities.

Mayor issues proclamation for Municipal City Clerks Week On Monday, May 1, at the City Council Meeting, Mayor Steve Morley issued a Proclamation designating May 7-13, 2017 as “Municipal Clerks Week.” The Proclamation cites that the Clerk “serves as the professional link between the citizens, the local governing bodies and agencies of government at other levels.”

The Mayor extended appreciation to Elmhurst’s Municipal City Clerk Patty Spencer and Deputy City Clerk Ellen Cyprian highlighting how in their roles they are continually striving to improve the administration of their duties.

Patty Spencer has served as Elmhurst’s City Clerk since 2005, when she was first elected into office; she began her 4th Term on May 1, 2017. As City Clerk, Patty has many responsibilities including keeper of the City seal, official keeper of the City’s records, and secretary to the City Council.

Though she does not get a vote on items before the Council, Clerk Spencer believes in the mantra, “clerks make it work,” and takes her role as a direct link between residents and government very seriously. For instance, one task associated with her role is to ensure that public meetings are properly posted.

The Office of the City Clerk also

oversees senior transportation programs, voter registration, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, and a large variety of permits. Clerk Spencer also serves as the local election official and the Open Meetings Act (OMA) officer for the City, ensuring that all required staff, elected officials, and volunteer Commissioners complete the state-mandated training.

Along with her husband Byron, Patty has been an Elmhurst resident for 33 years. Patty has been involved as a volunteer and Board member for various organizations including Kiwanis Club, Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst College & Community Committee, the Elmhurst Hospital Guild, and the Elmhurst Garden Club and is a staunch supporter of community events. A proud cancer survivor, Patty advocates for cancer awareness in the community through the Relay for Life and Edward-Elmhurst’s Cancer outreach programs.

Day to day operations of the Clerk’s office are run out of the administration office at City Hall by Deputy Clerk Ellen Cyprian along with administrative staff. Cyprian, a full-time employee of the City since 2006, was appointed Deputy Clerk in 2014 by Clerk Spen-

Elmhurst native Julie Peterson returns to Elmhurst on Saturday, May 13, for a special performance in Broadway in Elmhurst, an evening of musical theatre and entertainment to benefit the Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts, a not-forprofit organization dedicated to building a center for theatre, music, dance, and comedy anchored in Elmhurst.

“I am very excited to perform in my hometown, along with other people who have their roots in the Elmhurst community,” said Julie. “It is meaningful to reunite with family and friends, those who believed in me from the start – and those who believed in me more than I believed in myself.”

Julie’s vocal and theatrical interest was sparked by her parents, whom she fondly recalls were always playing music, singing and dancing throughout her childhood. In 5th grade, she auditioned with Elmhurst Children’s Theater and remembers not getting a part in her first two auditions.

“I finally got a part in the Sound of Music playing nun #105, because someone quit!”

Her passion for performance and talent was not dampened by the experience, but instead increased each year. In 8th grade, Julie auditioned and was selected as one of only 100 middle schoolers nationwide to participate in the American Choir Director’s Association choir in Los Angeles.

As a freshman at York High School, Julie earned the lead role in York’s production of Aida.

Thereafter, Julie had commanding performances on the York stage. Her powerful singing voice and exceptional acting ability landed her roles as the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz, Ms. Peretti in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Dorothy in 42nd Street.

In 2014, Julie receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from the highly prestigious Boston Conservatory

of Theater and Music and was one of only seven in her class to sign with an agent. Her agent quickly helped her land a part with National Theater Works USA, where she traveled the country with the children’s musical tour production of Click, Clack, Moo. “I learned a lot about Julie Peterson how to sustain a life as an actor,” Julie said. “The hardest part was making sure my voice was good everyday, because sometimes we had to perform four times in one day.”

When she returned to New York, she quickly booked with the Disney Cruise line, where she played multiple Disney characters as a Main Stage performer.

“This was another tremendous learning experience for me because we had performances every night of the week, sometimes performing through hurricane like conditions.”

Now a member of The Actors Equity, Julie is living and working in New York City, where she continues Masters classes. As a professional actor, she has had roles with Pearl Studios, Godspeed Opera House and LymeLight Theaters.

Julie admits she is certainly living her dream in New York, but knows in her heart that she would never have come this far without the strength and support she received and continues to receive from Elmhurst.

“I am so lucky to have had so much support from my family, my choir teacher Rebecca Marianetti, my community and the City of Elmhurst,” she said. “Coming home is the biggest confidence booster in the world.”

In addition to Julie Peterson, the Broadway in

Elmhurst event brings together others who have a history with the performing arts in Elmhurst, including Mezzo-Soprano Lisa Griffith, known for her role as musical director for many Elmhurst Children’s Theater shows over the past 18 years.

Griffith has performed around the country and has been an apprentice with both Santa Fe Opera and Glimmerglass Opera.

Other Elmhurst groups include DuPage Dance, Elmhurst Choral Union and York High School’s Grammy award-winning drama department who will perform selections from its spring musical West Side Story.

“We look forward to being a part of this evening to celebrate the arts in our community,” said Geni Lucchesi, co-director, DuPage Dance and Elmhurst Dance Theater. “We have been here a long time,” she explained, referring to her active involvement in DuPage Dance for 35 years.

“There are more performing groups establishing themselves in Elmhurst – dance, theater, singing – and there is need for a professional level theater to support the growth and the community interest.”

Broadway in Elmhurst takes place Saturday, May 13, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Timothy Christian High School Auditorium located at 188 W. Butterfield Road. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and students, and $15 per ticket for groups of 8 or more. Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization in the state of Illinois. The ECPA initiative kicked off in 2014 with the goal of building a center for music, theater, dance and comedy anchored in Elmhurst.

Police Chief offers update of gas station robbery Suspects charged after Clark station robbed at gunpoint

A person admitting involvement and another person of interest relating to the Clark Gas Station robbery in Elmhurst that occurred on April 25, 2017 have been charged by the FBI with a series of armed robberies and attempted armed robberies.

The defendants, Emanuel Gavin and Henry Fabela of Chicago, have been charged for a sequence of crimes occurring between January 24, 2017 and April 28, 2017 of cellular phone stores, gas stations, conve-

nience stores, and other businesses in Chicago and the suburbs of Chicago.

All of the robberies exhibited a similar pattern of robbery with a handgun while wearing a surgical mask. Elmhurst Police Detectives along with the FBI and Police Agencies from Chicago, Homewood, Berwyn, and Skokie assisted with the investigation.

The suspects were arrested by the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force on Friday, April 28, following the robbery of a Metro/PCS Store in Chicago.

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Battery

April 30 A victim at a restaurant in the 100 block of N. Robert Palmer Drive told police at around 12:17 a.m. that she had been battered by one of her coworkers. The victim states that after work, she and some co-workers, including the suspect, were drinking near the above location. As all parties were about to part ways, a physical altercation ensued between the victim and the suspect. Victim advised she and the suspect often play fight, but believes this time things got out of hand. The victim stated she only came in to the Police Department because her mother told her to, but she did not wish to pursue charges. The victim was advised to speak to her manager regarding the incident if she chooses.

April 29 A reporting officer responded to Elmhurst Hospital for the report of an unruly patient who had scratched and spit on two hospital security officers. Security responded to the ER area for an uncooperative psych patient who had been admitted. The suspect attempted to leave the hospital and was given several commands to return to her room. However, the suspect then became aggressive and had to be restrained.

During this process, the suspect scratched and spit on hospital security officers.

April 29-April 30 A victim told police she found that her vehicle had been scratched on the passenger front and rear doors by unknown objects while it was parked in the lot of a hotel in the 300 block of N. Route 83 between the above dates.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

May 3 Police said officers responded to the report of a domestic between a mother and daughter in the 100 block of Linden at around 10:37 p.m. The mother and daughter began fighting after a verbal argument. Both refused to sign complaints and they agreed to stay away from each other for the evening. Family Shelter was notified.

May 2 A complainant told police that a suspect struck a victim over the head with a hair brush earlier in the day. There were no visible marks on the victim. The suspect related that nothing physical occurred on the above date, and that the complainant may have attempted to make a report due to their discussion of a divorce.

April 28 Officers responded to the 300 block of N. River Glen at around 1:06 a.m. for people yelling and throwing things inside a garage.

CALL 800-222-TIPS The victim was upset that the garage was not cleaned out by the suspect. The suspect then locked himself in a bedroom once he saw officers walking up towards the house.

April 27 A victim in the 300 block of E. Fullerton told police at around 8:08 a.m. that during a family argument, a suspect had struck him in the neck and right arm, and had closed a door on his hand as well. The suspect denied striking the victim. Officers didn’t observe any visible injuries on the victim. The suspect’s husband advised he and the suspect are in the process of having the victim evicted from the residence. No arrests were made.

May 3 Tomasz Czerski, 54, of Chicago, was issued a citation for possession of liquor on a public way near York and I-290 at around 4:45 p.m.

Subsequent to a traffic stop, Czerski, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to be in possession of an open can of beer.

May 1 While police were on patrol in a parking lot in the 500 block of W. North Ave., Efren Ruiz, 55, of Chicago, was observed sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle drinking from an open bottle of brandy, according to police. He was issued a citation for possession of open alcohol in public.

April 30 Tanisha Pierce, 34, of Glendale Heights, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage and no insurance near North and Route 83 at around 2:57 a.m.

April 28 Richard Davis, 45, of Wood Dale, was issued a citation for possession of liquor on a public way near Third and Highview at around 12:14 p.m. Police said a reporting officer responded to the above area on the call of an intoxicated male harassing people. According to police, Davis was located on his bicycle holding a beer, and he was drinking from it.

April 27 • Thomas Flanagan, 63, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI in the 200 block of Evergreen St. at around 8:11 p.m. Police said that officers responded to the above location for a domestic call, and upon arrival, observed Flanagan attempting to leave the scene in his vehicle by exiting the garage with the garage

door closed, causing damage to the door. According to police, officers spoke to Flanagan, who had an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.

• Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield Road and Kirk Avenue at around 8:35 p.m., it was learned that the vehicle registration did not belong to that vehicle which the suspect, Trishana Forde, 26, of Bourbonnais, was driving. According to police, Forde also was found to have a failure to appear warrant out of DuPage County. Forde was charged with illegal transportation of alcohol, unlawful possession of vehicle registration, driving while license suspended, unlawful use of an electronic device while driving and no insurance.

Harassment, threats

May 3 A victim at a food store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 told police at around 5 p.m. that she received a transferred call from the main line, stated her name and when she asked the caller how she could help him, the caller made threatening and crude comments to her. She immediately hung up and believes the caller has called the store in the past but has never had a face-to-face conversation with her.

April 29 A victim at a church in the 100 block of E. Third St. told police at around 2:45 p.m. that he received a voicemail message from a suspect who threatened the victim. The victim relates he has never met the suspect and has not had any contact with him. The suspect has had similar dealings with other members of the church in the past. Contact was made with the suspect, who admitted to leaving the message.

Charges are pending and no trespass notices will be served.

Possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia, controlled substance

May 3 • Christopher Marquez, 36, of Westmont, was charged with unlawful possession of a hypodermic syringe or needle and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Roosevelt at around 1:42 a.m.

May 2 • Christian Ramirez, 22, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, expired registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and Industrial at around 12:29 a.m.

• Police said that subsequent to a drug investigation, Perry Thomas, 28, of Hoffman Estates, arrived at a hotel in the 500 block of W. Grand with crack cocaine. He was also in possession of cannabis, according to police. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance with an intent to deliver and possession of cannabis.

May 1 Denzel Rudd, 23 of Bellwood, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and of drug paraphernalia subsequent to an accident in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 2:15 p.m.

April 30 • Gerardo A. Orozco, 21, of Elmhurst, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding and driving while license suspended subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Willow at around 12:43 p.m.

• Madeline Rago, 21, of Villa Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and expired registration subsequent to a traffic stop near North

and Route 83 at around 12:08 a.m.

April 28 • Michael Griffin, 31, of Berwyn, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 9:55 a.m.

• Jonathan Rodriguez, 22, of Lyons, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near North End and Kenilworth at around 9:09 p.m.

• Jason F. Young, 28, of Carol Stream, was charged with possession of cannabis, less than 10 grams, and speeding near Villa and Thomas at around 4:20 p.m. Police said that while conducting Stationary Radar Patrol, a reporting officer stopped Young’s vehicle for a speeding violation. While speaking with Young, the officer detected an odor of burnt cannabis coming from the vehicle, according to police.

Police said a search of Young and the vehicle yielded a partially smoked cannabis blunt and a clear knotted plastic bag containing suspect cannabis was located.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

May 3 Police said that subsequent to an investigation of a robbery occurring at a gas station in the 100 block of W. Third at around 3:18 a.m., Joseph Anthony Pulido, 43, of Elmhurst, was located at his residence. He was charged with attempted robbery, felony theft, and theft of labor or services. Police said Pulido entered the station and told the clerk that he had a gun but did not display one. According to police, Pulido demanded all the cash from the register, but the clerk refused to surrender any money.

Police said Pulido then asked the clerk if he would give him $100 from the register, but the clerk again refused and Pulido left the store in a white taxi cab.

May 1-May 2 A victim in the 100 block of E. North End told police that she left her vehicle unlocked while parked overnight in her driveway. The following day she discovered that an unknown suspect had entered the vehicle and removed a GPS unit and a brown leather shoulder bag.

April 25-May 2 A victim in the 200 block of Willow told police that an unknown suspect used her personal information to open six credit card accounts at various retail establishments between the above dates. All the accounts were opened through online transactions.

May 1 Theft was reported by a local business in the 1000 block of S. York at around 6:39 p.m.

A complainant told police that three suspects described as black males entered the store; one asked to use the bathroom and the other two began wandering around the lobby asking about items for sale and prices. The complainant said she felt she was being distracted and went to check on the subject in the bathroom. Complainant heard the sound of the cash drawer being opened, and when she returned she saw one of the suspects at the open cash drawer. She stated she was calling the police, and the three suspects fled the store with cash. The area was checked for the suspects with no results.

April 28 • Eugenio Quintana, 65, of Elmhurst, was charged with felony theft in the 200 block of

W. Diversey at around 2:21 a.m. Police said that subsequent to investigating a suspicious noise, Quintana was found loading his pickup truck with scrap metal located behind the above business. The owner of the business was notified and Quintana was placed into custody.

• A victim in the 200 block of Addison told police at around 9:24 a.m. that she posted online that she was a massage therapist who only took cash. A suspect received a massage at his residence and tried to pay with a credit card. The victim reminded him that she only took cash. The suspect related that he would go to a cash station; however after an hour, he did not return. The victim did not want to sign complaints.

April 27 • Nicole Martinez, 42, of Lombard, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 4:40 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a shoplifting in progress, Martinez removed two rings and a necklace from the jewelry department and left the store without paying. She was located and placed under arrest.

• A complainant, the owner of a restaurant in the 600 block of W. North Ave., told police at around 2:22 p.m. that she received a call from a person identifying herself as a ComEd representative stating their business account was delinquent and a technician was en route to turn the power off. The complainant was then directed to a second phone number and advised to go to Jewel and pur-

chase two Green Dot Cards for $500 each. The purchase was not made and the business assumed no dollar loss at this time.

April 11-April 25 A complainant at a company in the 800 block of Industrial Drive told police that vendor checks were stolen from the U.S. Postal bin inside the vestibule of the company’s main entrance between the above dates.

March 3 A complainant told police that a suspect used an address of a vacant house when applying for his Elmhurst Public Library card and checked out approximately 18 video games and has not returned them.

Jan. 20 A complainant at a trucking company in the 700 block of N. York told police that their accounting department erroneously cut a check for a defective automotive part which was supposed to be an even exchange.

The suspect cashed the check, refused to refund the money, and has not been able to be contacted.

Warrant service

May 3 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Kenneth C. Conway, the driver, was found to be driving while license suspended and had an active warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. Conway, 52, of Elmhurst, was charged with operating a vehicle with suspended registration, driving while license suspended, no insurance and expired registration.

Elmhurst firefighters recently had the opportunity to train in a house scheduled for demolition on the 100 block of South Arlington.

The location of the home was ideal for the fire department to conduct drills, because it was close to the center of town and easily accessible from both fire stations. After permission was received from the property owners and once Habitat for Humanity had removed donated materials, the fire department was given full access to train for more than a month. The training opportunity came at an ideal time, as the department just added three new firefighters to bring its force to full-strength.

This structure gave the firefighters an opportunity to enact real life scenarios with the ability to perform hands-on demonstrations pertaining to critical aspects of their jobs. Training included building construction,

ladder placement, victim rescue from second floor windows, roof ventilation, search and rescue, and rapid intervention drills (RIT). RIT drills prepare firefighters for the unexpected and unfortunate instances when they themselves get lost inside of a building or run out of air in their breathing apparatus and need to be rescued.

Another drill incorporated the City’s recently purchase of a 95-foot tower ladder. Streets were blocked and firefighters were positioned on the tower ladder as they would in real-life fire situations. This property allowed firefighters to position the

ladder truck numerous ways to access the roof to ventilate, position the basket for rescue and work confidently on steep-pitched roofs.

Routine training has been regularly conducted at the fire department’s training facility located at 910 No. Addison Rd. since the 1970’s. The facility was updated in 2005, when two burn rooms fed by natural gas and smoke generators were added, allowing real-life yet extremely safe simulations for training firefighters.

The Elmhurst Fire Department is grateful to the property owners for the opportunity for this training.

Police have man in custody for Shell station robbery

Elmhurst police are investigating a robbery which occurred at the Shell Gas Station at 103 W. Third Street on May 3, 2017, at 3:15 a.m.

A white/male in his 30’s, wearing a White Sox jacket, entered the Shell Gas Station and demanded money from the cashier. The offender took an undetermined amount of U.S. Currency and fled from the scene on foot. A short time later, the suspect was taken into custody in the 900

block of Hillcrest and transported to Elmhurst police headquarters. Proceeds from the robbery were recovered from the suspect.

The identity of the suspect in police custody is not being released as formal charges are pending, and the case remains under active investigation at this time.

Diversionary theft at Yoga by Degrees Police are investigating a diversionary theft that occurred at Yoga

by Degrees, 1042 S. York Street on May 1, 2017, at 6:50 p.m.

Three male/black subjects, late teens, entered the store and asked to use the bathroom. While the attendant was distracted, one of the subjects opened the unlocked cash drawer and removed an undetermined about of currency. The offenders exited the front door and fled

Emojimania has taken over cyber world

You could say it started with the simple, round smiling yellow face back in the historic happy hippy days of the 1960s. It’s when Yellow Smiley was first created. Love, peace, smiles and all that jazz.

For decades, Smiley was just Smiley – the iconic symbol that communicated happiness in any and every language. The word emoji hadn’t even been invented yet.

But the future had much in store for Smiley as he (or maybe she) made the leap from hippy culture hard copy to modern day digital. This happened in the late 1990s in Japan, where the first emojis originated on cell phones.

The simple Yellow Smiley exploded into myriad round yellow faces – from happy to sad to winky-face and everything in between.

Along with emotional emojis came objects, ideas, the weather and so on. There are infinite possibilities for communicating about food, travel, animals, plants and anything else an emoji artist can create. If you can draw it, you can emoji it.

The Japanese couldn’t keep their emoji ingenuity a secret for very long.

A decade or so after their inception, Smiley and his friends made the digital trip over to the U.S. (and other countries worldwide) and pretty soon everyone was using the face with tears of joy to communicate how they felt about being able to express their feelings with a single click of the keyboard.

It might feel like emojis have been around for a long time (feels that way to me). But here in the U.S. it’s been less than a decade.

The first cell phones with readily available emoji capabilities were released in the U.S. in 2011. According to Emojipedia (which actually exists) there are currently 1,851 emoji characters, with another 69 set to be re-

leased in June of this year.

We currently have lots of yellow emoto-faces to choose from including smiling, dizzy, worried and confounded. There’s also smiling cat face, people with bunny ears partying (so many uses for that one), thumbs up, thumbs down, various colored hearts, camels (one and two humps), blood type emojis, zodiac emojis, fire, water, beer, wine, pizza, French fries, toilet, bomb and pile of poo – just to name a few.

Emojis continue to evolve. They became racially diverse in 2015. Gendered emojis hit our screens in 2016.

Some of the 69 scheduled for release in June include vomiting, a brain, zombie (male and female), breastfeeding (female), broccoli (unisex) and a giraffe (a little past April’s due date, unfortunately).

If my facts are correct, it took until 2017 to get a breastfeeding emoji, but we’ve had access to the smiling pile of poo as well as two options for camel for years. Anyone besides me see some irony there?

Emojis aren’t just multiplying.

I am writing to express my opinion about an indoor sports facility in Elmhurst. As a local middle school athlete it would be great to have an indoor facility. Many times in the spring and fall, outdoor sports activities have to be cancelled due to the weather and poor condition of the fields when it rains. When this hap-

Bethel Church celebrates Music Sunday

On Sunday, May 14, Bethel United Church of Christ will celebrate its annual spring Music Sunday, featuring the church’s adult voice choir under the direction of Minister of Music Jeffrey Panko, the adult bell choir under the direction of Linda Lunt, and soloists Andrew Volk, clarinet, and Jenny Riddle, soprano. The theme for Music Sunday is “I thank you God,” from a Gwyneth Walker composition based on a poem by E. E. Cummings, which will be sung by the voice choir. Musicians will offer classical as well as traditional and contemporary sacred works by Brahms, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Mark Hayes, among others, as the “sermon” for the morning worship service.

It all started at the 1904 World’s Fair

Two visitors to Art In The Park watch while this server heats up and forms a waffle into an ice cream cone, an idea that was born at the St. Louis World Fair in 1904. It was too hot for waffles and the ice cream was melting, so the two got together and the ice cream cone was born.

College receives 657 gifts, raises $121,000 during Day of Giving

Funds will support student scholarships, faculty development, other areas

Elmhurst College received 657 gifts and raised $121,000, as alumni, faculty, staff and students came together to give back and change lives during the College’s inaugural Day of Giving.

Held on April 20, the Elmhurst College Day of Giving raised funds to support scholarships, faculty development and other benefits to students. The day began with the Scholarship Breakfast, an opportunity for – Elmhurst College President Troy VanAken donors to meet the students who benefit from their scholarship support. Activities continued throughout the day to engage the campus the chaplain’s home with the Young ing never stopped. • President Troy and Dr. Annette VanAken Challenge: The VanAkens agreed to donate $10,000 to support faculty and staff professional development once the campus community reached 45% giving participation. In fact, faculty and staff achieved a participation rate of more than 60%.

• Barbara and Robert W. Swords Light of Knowledge Challenge: A.C. Buehler Library Director Susan Swords Steffen agreed to match all

gifts 2:1 made from alumni from the Classes of 1968-1988 who supported the Barbara and Robert W. Swords Light of Knowledge Scholarship (up to $2,500).

• Students also have given back to the College, with 100 seniors contributing to the class gift so far.

“I’m so gratified to see the commitment on the part of our alumni and the campus community to Elmhurst College and its success,” President VanAken said. “One of our key messages this academic year has been The Power of Many, and the results from our Day of Giving demonstrate why that message will help to take us to our goals and dreams.”

Hospital volunteers open Teen Time Capsule Memories, modernization, progress revealed in contents

Time marches on… we see it on our faces in the mirror and the faces of our children as they grow and mature. Time is much more meaningful when it is remembered over a period of several years — like 25.

On Saturday, April 29, a group of Elmhurst teen volunteers — some from today, others from 25 years ago — gathered in the East Lobby of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital to open a time capsule that had been assembled in 1992. In addition, today’s teen volunteers put together a new time capsule to be opened in 25 years — that is, 2042.

Among the volunteers is a mother-daughter team from Elmhurst.

Carol Raimondi was a volunteer back in 1992 when the first time capsule was made. Her daughter Isabella, currently a volunteer at the hospital, collected items for the time capsule to be sealed away now.

Following her volunteer experience, Carol was later employed by the hospital as a nurse and has

worked there ever since.

“I have been a volunteer here at the hospital, I’ve been a patient and I’ve worked as a nurse as well,” she said. “I can’t say enough about how Elmhurst Hospital values its volunteers.”

Carol is especially proud her daughter is taking part in the volunteer program and it’s clear by the look on her face that Isabella enjoys it, too.

Once opened, the time capsule contained a Candy-Striper dress, a shirt worn by male volunteers, local community newspapers from that era, supplies used like baby items and much more. There was a letter inside the capsule that was read to the group. A letter will be placed inside this “new” time capsule for reading in 2042.

Mary Steffens Foundation has successful fund drive Group bestows Distinguished Service Awards The Elmhurst-based Mary K. Steffens Foundation recently completed a successful fund drive as part of its annual “Heart of Elmhurst” fundraising effort.

The group raises money for cancer research, cancer survivors and caregivers and college scholarships for student volunteerism in support of those efforts.

“This is our eighth year of continuing Mary’s legacy through the Foundation’s fundraising,” noted Foundation President, Rick Steffens. “We are indebted to our generous donors whose contributions to this year’s donation drive will advance the charitable work Mary started.”

A portion of the funds raised this year will go to two Elmhurst high school seniors who are the 2017 recipients of the Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award. Meggie Hart of York High School, and Elizabeth Maloney of Immaculate Conception Catholic Prep, were cited for their volunteer work in the fight against cancer, as well as their exceptional academic, service and leadership records. Each will receive a college scholarship of $2000, renewable for an additional $1000 in their second year of study.

Meggie Hart is a National Honor Society member and a 2016 Illinois State Scholar.

She participated in the York All Youth Relay for Life Committee for four years and Meggie is the committee Hart senior chair. She served as captain of her own Relay for Life Elmhurst team, volunteering significant time in planning and executing fundraisers for the American Cancer Society (ACS). Meggie will attend Marquette University.

Elizabeth Maloney decided to start a Relay for Life team after experiencing her father’s and grandfather’s battles with cancer, and knowing that so many families Elizabeth of classmates and Maloney teachers are affected by this disease. She helped ICCP raise $11,000 for ACS research through her school’s Coaches vs Cancer event. Elizabeth plans to attend the University of Dayton.

This brings to 23 the number of college scholarships awarded to high school students in Elmhurst since the award was established in 2009. In total, more than $55,000 in scholarship money has been distributed.

Hart and Maloney will be acknowledged during the ACS’s Elmhurst Relay for Life, set for June 9 in Berens Park.

At this annual event, the Foundation will again furnish a light meal for survivors in all stages of recovery and their caregivers. A festive atmo-

sphere is created with T-shirts, ribbons and a raffle, giving participants time to meet, socialize, network and receive useful information on resources available to them.

The Mary K. Steffens Foundation will also continue its funding for cancer research with financial donations to organizations like the Cancer Re-

search Institute, Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

Poets from Hawthorne School honored by Library ‘Friends’ Earlier this spring, REACH English Language Arts students in grades 4 and 5 at Hawthorne School were able to enter two poetry contests — a national competition sponsored by Creative Communications and the “Friends of the Elmhurst LIbrary’s” poetry contest.

Ava Passarelli, Tyler Melind and Sophia Brown were three poets from

Hawthorne selected as winners of the Friends of the Library contest, which was awarded on Friday, April 28.

In addition, 26 young poets were chosen to be published in Creative Communication’s anthology, “A Celebration of Poets.” These poets include: Libby Donaldson, Jamie Fulco, Maeve Gibbs, Alexa Klein, Zhihanna Liu, Rachel Mangana-

ro, Meredith Baker, Sophia Brown, Julia Hessling, Sam Kapotas, Jack Kevin, Lilianna Leischner, Tyler Melind, Jane Marlott, Anna McGrail, Evan Hickman, Ava Passarelli, Nick Daleanes, Ames Puckett, Jonathon Szala, John SanFilippo, Gio Santoro, Niko Stathopoulos, Charlotte Damewood, Joey Rinchiuso and Max Wickenkamp.

The 4th grade poems were all written as Shakespearean sonnets, while the 5th graders’ were based on themes studied over the past year.

One example of a major change brought on by technology is a ‘Bot’ that does the work of 140 robots. Security can be stepped up now with technology that allows face recognition, which is supposedly more accurate by machine than by a human.

Drone technology is become more vastly used and will only increase.

Structures today — large and small — are built with materials that are lighter, cheaper and more flexible.

People who don’t like having a colonoscopy (and who does?!) mostly dread having to drink large amounts of a prescribed liquid more than the test itself! Tillman said colonoscopies can be done via “swallow-

able” technology. He showed a picture of a capsule that looked like it had technology inside.

“You can swallow the pill and it does all the examining of the colon on its own inside the body,” Tillman said. “Then it simply passes through the body and it can be read. We call it the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ technology,” drawing a laugh from the audience.

The phone can be a tracking device, useful in managing employees.

“You can track down a waitress and make sure she’s taking orders from the large group of high rollers sitting in your bar, restaurant or casino.

“The question you should ask yourself about new technology is, what will it allow me to do that I have never done before?”

One of the most important things to do while looking to the future is to know what your competitor is doing, according to Tillman.

“In order to have a competitive advantage, you need to deconstruct your entire business and build it again from the ground up,” he said.

“Do it yourself before someone else does it for you.”

The “Right Now” economy Tillman noticed how people expect things quickly, especially replies to their queries.

“The difference in response is vast,” he said. “An email is answered on an average of 90 minutes, while a text gets a reply in an average 90 seconds.

“You’ve got to be where the customer is when he or she is ready to buy.

Always be examining what you’re doing and make improvements along the way, he suggested.

Things continue to trend upward for the York boys water polo team.

The Dukes were 21-5-1 and 4-1 in West Suburban Conference action through late last week.

York won a recent tournament it hosted by defeating Maine East, Chicago Latin School and Chicago Whitney Young.

On senior night, the Dukes were 11-2 winners against Libertyville.

In another recent game against Neuqua Valley, York was down by a goal and on its last possession. Parker Hicks scored on Alex Marlott’s assist to tie the game. Marlott and Hicks each had a goal in overtime to give York the 13-11 win.

“We ran a plan that was initially defended well, but Alex found Parker cross cage for a perfect catch and shoot,” explained York coach Brian Drumm. “Alex and Parker both scored in overtime to earn a hardfought win.”

Drumm has seen multiple positives from the offensive side of the pool. “Our varsity newcomers have figured out our offense and are running it much more efficiently,” he said.

“Also, Parker has started scoring a lot more this past month. We now have multiple scoring threats every time we have the ball.”

York’s defense, Drumm noted, also has been on the upswing. “Our team defense is much better,” he said.

“Earlier in the season teams would find holes in our zone defense, but those holes have closed up recently.”

York goalie Gary Derwin has been a bright spot as well. “Gary has been on fire lately,” the coach said. “His passing, positioning and reflexes are exactly where they should be. We had win against a very tough Barrington team (recently). Gary blocked a penalty shot and a number of strong attempts to lead us to an 8-7 victory.”

Also, Will Salek, Mike Sullivan and Hicks were mentioned by Drumm for their recent strong play.

“Will and Mike have figured things out and become very strong bench players for us,” he said. “Parker has moved from a role player to an offensive and defensive star.”

Drumm also has noticed a major uptick in the confidence department of late. “I’m seeing a major boost in confidence,” he said.

Drumm noted York was gearing up for this past weekend’s conference tournament that included a match against Hinsdale Central and a possible rematch with Lyons Township.

“I’ve not had a team at York that was more excited to play one of our state’s premier teams,” he said.

Drumm added his team’s ability to navigate challenging situations has resulted in positive results. “Our ability to maintain composure in pressure situations has really improved,” he said. “In March, I’d see a lot of guys hanging their heads when the going got tough. Now I see a group of teammates lifting each other up and having fun when challenges arise. That’s what winners do.”

York plays in the sectional today at Fenwick. York is the No. 2 seed in the sectional.

York softball team wins four games

The York softball team won four games during a recent five-game stretch.

The Dukes started that run with a West Suburban Conference crossover sweep of Willowbrook.

In a 19-9 win over the Warriors, York led 13-0 after two innings, thanks to an eight-run first-inning explosion. The Dukes had 18 hits.

The two teams combined to make 14 errors.

Katherine Karnatz went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Jane Moran was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Mia Tran went 2-for-5 with a run scored and four RBI. Kyra Kroll had two RBI. Izzy Smith went 2-for-5 with four runs scored. Madison Collins had a hit and two RBI. Andrea Meagher had two hits and a run scored, while Sydney Fuglsang went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Jojo Moyer was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Smith, Meagher, Karnatz, Tran and Moran each had a double. Fuglsang tripled and Collins homered.

York also stole five bases.

Lauren Wojcik was the winning pitcher. She went three innings and allowed no hits and struck out six.

Meagher pitched the final three innings and was charged with nine runs, though none of them were earned. She struck out four.

In a 10-1 win over Willowbrook, York had eight hits and led 6-1 after the first inning. Moran was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Tran was 1-for2 with two runs scored. Smith was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Collins was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Fuglsang was 1-for-1 with a run scored, an RBI and two walks. Moyer had a hit and two RBI, while Wojcik also had a hit.

Smith, Collins and Fuglsang doubled. Collins tripled and Moyer homered. Tran stole two bases.

Derkowski was the winning pitcher. She struck out five and allowed three hits.

York then won 14-4 against Proviso West in a WSC Silver game. The Dukes had 16 hits and led 9-1 after the second inning.

Derkowski went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Fuglsang had a hit and two runs scored. Wojcik had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Collins had a hit and an RBI. Moyer had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. The York boys track team placed fifth at the recent competitive 49th annual Wanner-Knight Invitational hosted by Prospect High School.

Of note in the meet, Cal Widener tossed the sixth-farthest shot put in York boys track and field history. Charlie Kern Jr. won the 800 for the second year in a row at the Prospect meet.

Jackson Bode’s second-place time in the 3,200 was a personal best for him by 12 seconds.

Freshman Ethan Kern took seventh in the 1,600 and recorded the ninth-fastest freshman time in the event in the country so far this year.

In the 100, York senior Joey DeBenedictis was 23rd with a time of 12.30.

In the 100 dash weightman event, David May was eighth with a time of

13.37, while John Golen was 14th at 14.29.

In the 200, Josiah Scott was 14th at 24.28.

Kurt Namini was fourth in the 400 at 52.09. Mark Bashqawi was 14th at 53.53.

Kern Jr. won the 800 run in 1:53.21.

The second-place runner in the race was at 1:55.08. John Rosak finished 19th at 2:05.67.

Freshman Ethan Kern was seventh in the 1,600 in 4:24.14. Freshman Daniel Klysh was 15th at 4:31.39.

Bode, a junior, took second in the 3,200 run with a time of 9:29.85. Sean MacGregor, also a junior, placed fifth at 9:38.87, giving York 12 points in the event.

In an 11-8 home victory at Plunkett Athletic Complex, The Knights led 5-1 after the second inning, but trailed 7-5 heading into the bottom of the third. The Knights scored six runs over a three-inning stretch to pull back into the lead. IC Catholic Prep had 10 hits.

The Knights then lost 4-2 to ACC in Aurora. The Knights were limited to three hits, two coming from Salvi (2-for-4, 2 runs scored). CJ West went 1-for-2 with an RBI. West’s hit was a triple. Austin Reed stole three bases and the knights had eight steals as a team. Russ and Salvi each had two stolen bases. The Knights walked eight more times (20 times in the series), but left nine runners on base.

IC Catholic Prep also dropped an 11-4 MSC crossover game to Elmwood Park. Elmwood Park led 7-1 after five innings. The Knights were 10-16 overall after the Elmwood Park game.

The IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team went on a goal-scoring binge recently.

The Knights scored 19 goals in three victories.

In a 6-3 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win against Glenbard South, Olivia Hurt, Sophie Zanoni, Bella Leslie, Tessa Langan, Grace Fuller and Demitra DelFiacco each had a goal. Abi Wagner had two assists, while Langan and Hurt each had one assist.

IC Catholic Prep improved to 3-3 in MSC Blue play.

In a 6-3 MSC crossover win against St. Edward, Langan scored four goals, while Hurt had two. Hurt also had three assists, while Langan

had two assists. Del Fiacco had one assist.

In a 7-0 MSC crossover win against Guerin Prep, Langan had two goals, while Fuller, Leslie, Katie Hendricks, Caitlin Curtin and Kaitlyn Grady each had one goal.

Zanoni had three assists, while Hurt, Leslie, Tess Reardon and Del Fiacco each had one assist.

The three wins moved the Knights to 15-5 overall.

The Knights finished third as a team with 93 points.

Eric James was seventh in the 3,200 run in 11:11.28.

Rowell won the 100 dash in 11.15.

Lazerick Eatman was eighth at 11.92.

The Knights were second in the 800 relay at 1:35.74. Rowell took second in the 400 at 50.20.

Sean Hipskind was seventh in the 300 hurdles at 47.45. Rowell won the 200 in 22.88, while Luke Ricobene was second at 23.33. The Knights were second in the 1,600 relay at 3:41.90.

Tim McCann was fourth in the discus at 116-3 1/2. Rowell won the

long jump in 22-0 1/2. Robbie Whelan was eighth at 18-7. Kris Askew was fourth in the triple jump at 3810, while Sean Hipskind was fifth at 38-6 1/2.

Dan McCann was third in the shot put at 38-8. Ryan Wojtalewicz was eighth in the high jump at 5-0.

in 16-0. Lauren Jaeger was ninth at 14-0. Smith also won the triple jump in 34-6, while Hannah Johnson was fourth at 32-6. Gabi Zanoni was sixth in the shot put at 28-8. Holden was eighth at 27-10.

Mia Valenzuela was fourth in the high jump at 4-8.

IC Catholic Prep softball The IC Catholic Prep softball team scored a 13-3 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win against Illiana Christian in a game played indoors at The Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont.

The Knights scored seven runs in the first inning and two more in the second to pull away. IC Catholic Prep had nine hits. The Knights moved to 12-8 overall and 4-3 in MSC Blue play.

York boys volleyball team places third at own invite Dukes net 16 wins in first 24 matches

The York boys volleyball team recently placed third at its own York invitational.

York went 4-1 in the invitational and was 16-8 overall and 2-3 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division play through late last week.

In the invitational, York won 25-18, 25-13 against Blue Island Eisenhower.

Evan Haug had nine kills on 14 swings with only one error (.571 hitting). Michael Pennel added six kills on nine swings with one error (.556 hitting).

York hit .276 in the match. Rio Diaz had 21 assists. Pennel added four total blocks, while Adrian Kocinski had six digs.

In the second match against Wheaton North, York won 25-21, 25-20.

Haug had eight kills and hit .467. Pennel had six kills and hit .364. York hit .364 in the match. Haug also had two service aces. Pennel had four total blocks. Kocinski had eight digs and Diaz had 20 assists.

In a 25-22, 21-25, 25-23 non-conference loss to Tinley Park Andrew, York hit .320 in the match. Haug had 10 kills and hit .368. Dylan Kalchik had seven kills and hit .385. John Goehl had seven kills, while Pennel had five kills.

Diaz dished out 28 assists. Pennel had five total blocks, while Diaz had four total blocks. York had 11 total blocks in the match. Zach Hughart had seven digs, while Crowley and Kocinski each had four digs.

York also won 25-13, 25-13 against Proviso West in WSC Silver play. The Dukes hit .471 in the contest. Nosek led the way with nine kills on 11 swings with no errors (.818 hitting).

Haug had seven kills and hit .417. Pennel had four kills. Ryan Schaner had 16 assists, while Diaz had 13 assists.

Hughart finished with eight digs.

Dukes coach Ken Dowdy has noticed a recent uptick in the production he’s receiving out of the middle.

“We’ve really been able to get our middle hitters going over the past couple weeks when our serve-receive is good, which has helped our offense improve,” he said.

Dowdy added Haug is continuing to improve on the outside pin “and is beginning to place balls for kills effectively when facing a big block,” he

said. Howlett, he noted, has continued to improve “and his aggressive serve has led to quite a few service points, which has helped us close out matches.”

Dowdy was equally effusive in his praise of Diaz, Kalchik, Hughart and Sam Jordan-Wood. “Rio continues to get better as the season has progressed and his leadership and energy have been great lately,” he said. “Dylan has been our most consistent pin hitter and I expect him to continue to improve.

He’s definitely one of our most coachable players and we will look to rely on him at either pin position. Zach and Sam continue to excel both defensively and on serve-receive, which has benefitted our offense immensely.”

Timothy Christian sweeps conference series from Elmwood Park Loerop’s RBI single in eighth proves to be game-winner for Trojans

The Timothy Christian baseball team swept a recent Metro Suburban Conference Red Division two-game series against Elmwood Park.

Timothy won the opener 3-2 in eight innings. The Trojans jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Brian Schiff singled on the first pitch of his at-bat, driving in Jimmy Allen who had walked and stole second and third bases.

In the third inning, Noah Marrera walked and advanced to third on passed balls. Schiff then drove him in with his second RBI-single of the game.

Elmwood Park scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.

Nick Huisman retired the first Elmwood Park batter in the seventh and

then surrendered a walk and a double. Jakob Loerop came in relief and struck out the first batter he faced. He retired the side on a fielder’s choice ground ball to end the threat.

In the top of the eighth, Schiff hit his third single of the game and advanced to second on a ground ball.

Loerop then singled to right to drive in Schiff with the go-ahead run.

Allen pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn the save. Huisman started, going 6 1/3 innings. He struck out eight and allowed only six hits. Timothy had seven hits in the game. Allen had a double.

Timothy won the second game of the series 14-4 in five innings, thanks to an eight-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Elmwood Park scored two unearned runs to grab a quick first-in-

ning lead, but Timothy came back and scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Allen walked and moved to second on a Josh Anderson single. Marrera doubled to score Allen with Anderson stopping at third. Joey Davidson grounded out to score Anderson.

Marrera advanced to third and then scored on Schiff’s single to center.

Elmwood Park used three singles in a row to score a run in the second inning. In the Timothy half of the frame, Allen walked, stole second and scored on an Anderson single.

Timothy scored two more runs in the third inning. Huisman singled and Connor Gwaltney was hit by a pitch.

Loerop moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Allen then doubled to right scoring Huisman and John Tazelaar, who was running for Gwaltney.

Elmwood Park got an unearned run in the top of the fifth. Allen came in to pitch with one out in the fifth and shut down the threat.

In the eight-run bottom of the fifth, Gwaltney doubled, Loerop singled, Shawn VanTholen walked, Allen doubled, Anderson singled, Marrera and Davidson each were hit by a pitch, Schiff singled, Huisman singled and Gwaltney singled in his second at-bat of the inning.

Loerop was the winning pitcher.

He went 4 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run. Allen picked up his fourth save. Anderson, Schiff and Huisman each had three hits. Allen had four RBI, while Schiff had three RBI. Timothy had 16 hits. Allen had two doubles, while Gwaltney and Marrera each had one double.

Timothy also dropped a 3-0 MSC

crossover game to Wheaton Academy. The Trojans were held to five singles in the game. Timothy loaded the bases in the first inning but could not score a run. Only one Timothy runner made it as far as second the rest of the game. VanTholen pitched well, allowing only one earned run.

The Trojans also lost 3-1 to IC Catholic Prep in another MSC crossover game. Timothy outhit IC Catholic Prep 9-5.

The Trojans scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh. Jonny Strube doubled (his third hit of the game) and advanced to third when Tazelaar reached on an error and then scored on an Allen single.

Anderson, in his first varsity start, took the loss. He went five innings and scattered only five hits and gave up one earned run.

Timothy Christian softball team defeats Walther Christian

The Timothy Christian softball team recorded a recent 18-4 Metro Suburban Conference Red Division victory against Walther Christian. The win put the Trojans at 3-7 overall.

In the game, Hope Zastrow and Samantha Leide each tripled, while Liv Schuringa had a double.

First-year Timothy coach Lindsay Slovey has been pleased with the team’s perseverance this season.

“It’s been a tough year with injuries and low numbers,” she said. “We have a lot of people filling in at new

struggling to get runs in. We leave people stranded,” she said. “Against Walther the offense was much better.

We had some doubles and triples.”

Slovey has seen the team take steps forward in the field as well. “Our errors have been getting fewer as the season goes on,” she said.

Despite challenges with injuries, Slovey said she has plenty to be pleased with. “We have been blessed with hard-working girls who give it all they have on the field,” she said.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the girls and what they have been able to accomplish.”

Pennel has been a force in the middle for the Dukes. “We’ve really gotten a lot better on the block and Michael has really stepped up lately in that regard,” said Dowdy. “We struggled earlier in the season in regard to blocking, but we are getting better.

Stuff blocks are great, but getting a touch against the better teams and giving our defense a chance is even better. Continued improvement in that regard will inevitably lead to postseason success.”

York has been spot-on at the service line throughout the season. “This is by far the best serving team I have ever coached,” said Dowdy. “When we have struggled offensively our serve has been able to take our opponents out of system and provide our block and defense the ability to get us points. There have been some matches when I’ve turned to my assistants and said, ‘Our serve is our best offense.’

It’s a really nice weapon to have and it will be so valuable as we proceed through the end of the season and into the playoffs.”

Dowdy noted the Dukes are still evolving on the offensive end. “It’s one area of our game that is still developing,” he said. “We continue to be inconsistent in regard to our offense at times and sometimes continue to make the same mistakes. Don’t get me wrong, we are getting better offensively and have a much more diversified attack, but we need to continue to get

better at leading the block and defense and place the ball better for kills. At times we still continue to swing away without adjusting to the set or reading the block. We’ve made progress in that area and have improved our hitting percentage, but we still have a long way to go. We have the potential to be a very good offensive team and have looked the part in many matches, but we’re still looking for consistency and consistent execution.”

Kocisnki has been part of a York defense that has impressed Dowdy.

“Our defense has been really good and our passing typically has been good,” he said. “We recently moved up Adrian, our JV libero, to the varsity team due to absences and injuries and he did a great job in our invitational.

He’s going to be a great contributor to the team defensively as we close out the regular season and will strengthen our defense. Adrian really gets some great touches on balls defensively and provides great depth defensively.”

Nosek and Jack Crowley are two more contributors who have helped the Dukes of late. “John has started to heat up offensively and has provided a lot of energy to the team,” said Dowdy. “He’s really one of my favorite players on the team and has battled through a nagging injury throughout the early part of the season. John is our only junior captain and really provides leadership in so many regards. He’s an unbelievable kid.”

Dowdy labels Crowley an unsung hero. “Jack is a senior who sat out last season with a knee injury,” he said.

“Jack is a kid who comes to practice every day with a positive attitude and work ethic while continuing to fight through pain. He adds stability to our serve-receive and on defense while always maintaining a positive attitude.”

Dowdy is hopeful consistent lineups will become the norm in the waning days of the regular season and with the playoffs fast approaching. “We are still trying to get healthy and find a consistent lineup at this point of the season,” he said. “There are matches where we look unbeatable one set and then look out of sorts the next. While I could blame that on sickness, youth and missing players, the reality is we are an inconsistent team at times. As a coaching staff, we’ve addressed it in practice and will continue to do so.

“The individual talent on this team is very good, but at times we don’t play as a team and rather than focus on the next ball we focus on the mistakes we make, which can lead to extended runs by our opponents. A positive is that our captains and players recognize it and have worked hard to fight through those difficulties during matches. While we’ve lost some tough matches against very good teams lately, the consistent message from the coaching staff is we just need to get better every match and find our rhythm by the end of the season.”

Both Timothy Christian track teams had strong showings at the recent Chicago Christian Invitational.

Timothy’s boys track team finished fifth at the meet with 51 points.

The Trojans were fourth in the 3,200 relay with a time of 9:14.67 and took fifth in the 400 relay with a time of 46.90.

Clint Fincher was fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:51.17, while Caleb Mitchell was sixth at 11:08.55.

Xavier Ross won the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.71. Chris Brooks was 10th in the 100 with a time of 12.12.

Tommy Troxel took fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:07.04, while Alex Oldenburger was 11th at 2:17.27. The Trojans were sixth in the 800 relay at 1:41.13.

Ross won the 300 hurdles in 40.58.

The next closest finisher was 43.93.

Carson Hooker was eighth in the event at 48.57.

Will Terpstra was sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:58.64. Brooks was eighth in the 200 with a time of 24.42.

The Trojans were third in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:43.21.

Brett Harbaugh was fifth in the discus with a throw of 113-4. Ross was second in the triple jump at 40-1.

The Trojans took fifth in the 3,200 relay with a time of 10:34.53 with Valerie Hoekstra, Elise Terpstra, Jill Forgac and Rachel Stoll.

Timothy was third in the 400 relay at 53.11 with Olivia Hoekstra, Zoe Stanton, Gabi Silvia and Alyse Schnurr.

Girls badminton team qualifies maximum six players for state meet Dukes boys gymnastics team sending multiple athletes to state

Over the years, the York girls’ badminton team’s favorite number has been six.

Six as in the maximum number of players that can qualify for the state meet per team.

York once again qualified the maximum six players for this weekend’s state finals meet in Charleston.

The Dukes won the Thornton Fractional South sectional with 15 points, edging the host school by a single point.

It was York’s 11th sectional title in a row.

York singles players Linnea Dierksheide and Laura Hyink are heading to state. Dierksheide finished second in the singles division, while Hyink was fourth. Both are juniors.

Dierksheide won her first match 21-12, 21-13 and then won 21-7, 21-9 in the semifinals before dropping a 21-18, 21-14 decision in the championship match to TF South.

“An interesting example was when a teenage girl recently started getting flyers in the mail from companies that offer maternity services,” Tillman said. “The teen hadn’t told her father yet and he began to ask why she was receiving mail about pregnancy.

“In other words, those businesses knew the teen was pregnant before her own father did!”

According to Tillman, the average time spent on electronics every day is 10 hours and 39 minutes. Today’s consumer expects immediate results, quick answers, ways to save time and money and ways to increase productivity. He said studies indicate that 80% of people with smartphones check them within 15 minutes after waking up in the morning.

“If you’re not where a customer is, you’re nowhere,” Tillman said.

“Change isn’t hard, resistance to change is what is hard,” he said. “It’s better to be uneasy rather than extinct.”
