In an academic year already marked with record enrollments, Elmhurst College friends, alumni, faculty, staff and students came together on Thursday, May 3, and set another record, raising $287,810 during the College’s second annual #JayItForward Giving Day. More than 1,000 donors from 33 states contributed to the 24-hour fundraiser to benefit Elmhurst students, with the final number exceeding the original $200,000 goal by nearly half.

President Troy D. VanAken announced the final results Friday morning during a campus celebration also shared on Facebook Live.

As Giving Day ambassadors showed each digit one by one, cheers erupted when the record-setting amount was fully revealed.

“That’s a new record,” President VanAken said, “and it’s a testament to the fact that when we pull together, we can do anything.”

The money raised will support numerous causes at Elmhurst College, including the student scholarship fund, the Honors Program, student research, the American Dream Scholarship for first-generation college students, student leadership programs, Bluejay Backers Athletics, and more.

On Thursday, the campus was busy from end to end with #JayItForward Giving Day events. The day kicked off with the Scholarship Breakfast, an opportunity for donors to meet with scholarship recipients

On Tuesday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m., the York Community High School Music Department will present performances by the York Cadet and Concert Orchestras. The concert will honor members of the graduating class of 2018, and will feature a variety of music including works by the Italian Baroque master Arcangelo Corelli, a tango by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzola and selections from Disney movies Beauty and the Beast and Brave. Featured soloists include violinists Elizabeth Yu and Adrian Zhuang, violist April Fatheree, cellists Caitlin Forbes and Zoe Daniel as well as Julian Wrobel on harpsichord. The orchestras are directed by Ray Ostwald. The performance is in Baker Auditorium at York High School. Admission is free.

A reception honoring the student musicians will follow the concert in the cafeteria.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Battery

April 29 Police said that subsequent to a disturbance call at around 2:08 a.m., suspects were located in the area of First and Elm. Suspect 1 told police while at a nearby pub for a post wedding celebration, he and his wife agreed to accept a ride home from Suspect 2. While in the vehicle, a verbal argument ensued, turning into a physical altercation. All parties were highly intoxicated, and due to conflicting accounts, no arrests were made.

DUI, illegal transportation alcohol Criminal damage, criminal of April 29 Mari R. Hinchley, 22, of Elmhurst, was defacement May 2 John F. Knebel, 42, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for vandalism in the 300 block of E. Church at around 2:22 p.m.

April 30 Criminal damage to a vehicle was reported in the600 block of W. Grand at around 12 noon. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) scratched his tan Lexus SUV with an unknown object while it was parked in the lot.

April 20-April 30 A victim in the 200 block of E. South told police that an unknown suspect(s) knocked down a post located in her front yard sometime between the above dates.

April 28 A complainant in the 100 block of N. York advised at 8:50 p.m. that prior to parking her vehicle in the parking lot, she was involved in a verbal altercation over a parking issue. Upon returning to the vehicle in the parking lot, the rear window was smashed.

Disorderly conduct

April 30 Robert Lee Baldwin, 68, of Bensenville, was charged with disorderly conduct in the 200 block of N. York at around 8:28 p.m. Police said officers responded for an unresponsive person, Baldwin, laying on the sidewalk who was found to be intoxicated.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

May 2 A 32-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 500 block of W. Crockett at around 11:59 a.m. A victim told police that during an argument, the suspect grabbed her by the neck and threw her out of the house.

April 28 A complainant’s son told police a subject grabbed his sweatshirt and slapped his face.

The subject denied slapping his stepson, and there were no marks indicating the victim was slapped.

April 27 A victim in the 200 block of West told police at around 10:11 p.m. he was involved in a verbal argument with a suspect, which then turned physical. The suspect reportedly struck

charged with DUI, unlawful use of an electronic device and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Second and Addison at around 2:05 a.m.

Rene Robledo, 33, of Cicero, was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, improper lane usage and disobeying a traffic control device near St. Charles and Poplar at around 4:52 a.m.

April 28 Luis Ramirez, 33, of Lombard, was charged with aggravated DUI, driving while license revoked, disobeying a traffic control device and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 3:41 a.m.

April 27 Tomasz Styrczula, 30, of Homer Glen, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 53 and Riverside at around 12:26 a.m. Police said an officer observed Styrczula to have red, bloodshot, glassy eyes and had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.

Harassment, threats

May 2 A victim in the 700 block of W. Grand told police at around 3:41 p.m. he sold a vehicle to a suspect. The suspect is texting the victim threatening messages and posting derogatory comments on Facebook about the dealership where he works. The suspect was advised to stop all communication with the victim and his place of employment.

April 29 A victim in the 500 block of Evergreen told police at around 5:18 p.m. of having a phone conversation with the suspect, her ex-husband.

During the phone call, the suspect threatened the victim. The suspect denied making any threatening statements to the victim.

A victim in the 500 block of S. Cambridge and her mother reported at around 9:11 p.m. that the victim’s ex-fiancé has sent them threatening text messages. A reporting officer was unable to make contact with the suspect at this time.

April 26-April 27 A complainant told police while at work, there was a misunderstanding between the complainant and suspect between the above dates. The complainant has received and viewed snapchat messages from the suspect making threats of physical harm to her. The suspect admitted to sending the messages, and stated there will be no more issues.

April 28 Apocalipsis Godinez-Dandova, 18, of Granite City, Ill., was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to investigating a suspicious vehicle in the 400 block of W. Lake at around 2:50 a.m.

Alante Johnson, 25, of Bellwood, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Prospect at around 4:22 p.m.

April 26 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop for using a cell phone while driving near North and Route 83 at around 11:06 p.m., a suspect was found to have a suspended driver’s license and in possession of unknown prescription pills. The suspect was transported to the police station, processed and released without charges pending lab results.

April 25 Jermaine D. Guthrie, 25, of Northlake, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal transportation of alcohol and unlawful use of an electronic communication device subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and West at around 10:05 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances

May 1 Police said officers responded to the report of a suspicious person walking around school grounds in the 800 block of N. Wilson just prior to student dismissal at around 3:06 p.m.

The subject was advised to leave the school’s premises. The subject’s parents were made aware of the situation and stated they will make sure the subject is not on school grounds during school hours.

April 26 Police said an officer responded for a call of a customer at a store in the 900 block of S. York who cut his hand on a razor blade that was embedded in the handle of a shopping cart at around 8:35 p.m. A complainant related that the victim came in and requested a band aid.

The victim further stated that he retrieved a cart from the cart corral and was cut by a razor blade embedded in a lip of the shopping cart handle.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

May 2 Attempted retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of W. North at around 12:36 p.m. Police said officers responded to a report of a suspect who was shoplifting. A store employee followed the suspect and retrieved the items back from the cart before the suspect fled in a red Chrysler van.

April 30 Theft was reported at a restaurant in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at around 4:47 p.m. Police said officers responded for a theft where two or three unknown suspects took chips and money from the tip box and fled on foot. The

complainant did not wish to sign complaints.

Suspect #1 was described as a black male, wearing khaki pants, a blue sweatshirt and dark shoes. Suspect #2 was reportedly wearing black pants, a black sweatshirt and white shoes. Both males appeared to be in the mid to late teens.

Man sentenced to seven years for DUI hit-and-run

Incident took place in Villa Park

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that a Glen Ellyn man accused of a hitand-run crash in Villa Park has been sentenced to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Lawrence Sieber, 64, of 89 S. Park Avenue, appeared at a sentencing hearing where Judge Jeffrey MacKay handed down the sentence. On March 5, 2018, Sieber entered a plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated DUI Causing Great Bodily Harm, a Class 4 felony.

On January 22, 2017, at approximately 4:50 p.m., Sieber ignored a stop sign at Ardmore and Jackson in Villa Park and T-boned another vehicle in the intersection, severely injuring the driver.

Following that crash, Sieber fled the scene and was involved in three other crashes, one in Villa Park and two in Lombard. Responding officers located Sieber driving his truck on Roosevelt Road and began to pursue Sieber. During the pursuit, while stopped at a traffic light, Sieber rammed his truck into the car in front of him in an effort to elude arrest but was unsuccessful. He was taken into custody at that time following a brief struggle with officers in which he had to be forcibly removed from his truck. He appeared in Bond Court the following day and has remained in custody since that time at the DuPage County Jail on a bond of $750,000 with 10% to apply.

“There is a reason why drinking and driving is against the law – to protect the motoring public from people like Mr. Sieber,” Berlin said. “Not only did Mr. Sieber think nothing of driving after he had been drinking, he thought nothing of the potential harm he could cause to others. Unfortunately, he did cause serious harm to another motorist who will forever be afflicted by the injuries caused by Mr. Sieber. He didn’t stop there, however. In an attempt to avoid responsibility, Mr. Sieber thought nothing of driving after he had been involved in that crash and was subsequently involved in three other crashes before finally being taken into custody. Thankfully, those crashes did not result in serious injury to anyone else.

“I would like to thank the Villa Park and Lombard Police Departments for their outstanding work in apprehending Mr. Sieber before he could do any further harm.”

Sieber will be required to serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Glenbard East students among those injured in fire pit explosion in Glendale Heights STAFF REPORT

At least eight teenagers were injured following a fire pit explosion Saturday, April 28 in Glendale Heights. Glenbard East High School students were among those injured, according to published and television news reports.

Glendale Heights police said the incident occurred at around 10:16 p.m. at a residence in the 1800 block of Marci Court.

Police said in a statement that it is believed the explosion was the result of a flammable material that was poured onto a small fire in a fire pit in the back yard of the residence when several people were nearby the fire.

Police said responding officers located several people who had received burns and summoned medical assistance. The injured, whose ages range from 14 to 17, were transported to area hospitals.

Police added that the cause of the fire is as yet undetermined, and the incident is still being investigated.

There are no signs of foul play.

WGN-TV news reported many of the injured were at the Loyola University Medical Center’s burn unit, and that one of the teenagers was in a coma on a breathing tube.

One victim suffered burns to much of his body, while two more victims suffered facial injuries and will need reconstructive surgery, according to WGN-TV news.

Glenbard East Principal Shahe Bagdasarian released the following statement: “We are aware of this tragic event involving our students. Our student service team will be available to speak with students who need additional support throughout the week.

Our positive thoughts and prayers go out to all the families involved,

and we wish our students a speedy recovery. We are grateful to the first responders and the medical staff helping our students.”

Fundraisers being held for victims on May 12 • A fundraiser for four of the Glenbard East High School students who were among those injured following a fire pit explosion in Glendale Heights on Saturday, April, 28, will be held from noon to 10 p.m. Satur-

day, May 12, at the Lombard Moose Lodge, 328 W. Roosevelt.

One-hundred (100) percent of the proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the Hamilton, Bachner, Wolff and Galarza families. The students— Autumn Hamilton, Korryn Bachner, Alyssa Wolff and Ivan Galarza— each suffered burns in the explosion.

GoFundMe.com pages also have been set up for each of these students.

There will be a cash bar and several raffles throughout the day (winners do not need to be present to win).

Burgers and fries will be available

for $6 from noon to 3 p.m. A lasagna dinner, which includes a salad and garlic bread, is $10 and starts at 5 p.m.

Jimmie Poole was charged with Theft, Possession of Burglary Tools, and transported to the DuPage County Jail to await a bond hearing.

Elmhurst Police suspect additional, yet unreported, theft(s) of bicycles in recent weeks may have occurred in the vicinity of the Metra Station.

Two very popular ones are to be Principal for the Day as well as PE Teacher for the Day. This year fifth grader, Sofia Brucci, won Principal for the Day and she had a day filled with helping current principal, Dr. D, fulfill some daily duties such as morning announcements and visiting the class-

The Gracey family helped current PE teacher, Ms. Roberts, with carrying out her PE classes throughout the day and getting to not only participate with the classes but to be in charge of them as well. Six York students shine at Chinese speech contest

Congratulations to the following six York High School students who participated in the Tenth Midwest Chinese Speech Contest at Northside College Preparatory High School on April 21.

The Chinese Speech Contest was hosted by the Midwest Chinese Teachers Alliance (MCTA).

This year there were about 200 students who participated in this contest, in which the high school division had 137 contestants, outnumbering all other divisions.

Each high school (9-12) teacher could enter no more than one student to participate in the contest.

Chicago Blackhawks President and CEO John McDonough shared insights into leading a successful organization and building a winning culture before an audience of nearly 700 of the region’s top business and civic leaders during the ninth annual DuPage County Regional Business Outlook event on May 2 at the Drury Lane Conference Center. The annual event, hosted by Choose DuPage Economic Development Alliance, Mesirow Financial, and Ice Miller LLP, brings together DuPage County’s business owners and executives, government and education leaders, and other members of the local business community to learn insights about the current regional and national economic landscape, as well as to discuss best practices and growing potential in to-

day’s economy.

During his dialogue with event moderator Lisa Leiter, chief content officer of the Executives’ Club of Chicago, McDonough expressed the importance of making good hiring decisions. He also highlighted the value of cultivating a strong culture of loyalty, candor, and compassion within an organization, and building a team of people who will complement and enhance the company vision.

“The most important executive skill and the most underrated executive skill is hiring. If you don’t hire well, I don’t think you have a chance.

The Bryan Middle School Math Team recently participated in the 28th annual Junior High Math Contest (JHMC) at the Illinois Math & Science Academy (IMSA). Well-loved orchestral masterpieces and dazzling performances by vocal and instrumental soloists await you in the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra’s highly-anticipated 58th season of music-making: “Musical Masters.”

Concert programs will offer music sure to please a wide range of musical tastes, and special events throughout the season will infuse the concert experience with a celebratory flavor. The ESO’s home at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church offers a contemporary space in which to enjoy not-to-be-missed performances with family and friends.

The season begins with a program celebrating the music of Leonard Bernstein. French composers are showcased in the second concert of the season, followed by a January program featuring music of German baroque masters. Symphonies of Prokofiev and Mozart take center stage in March, and the season concludes in May with Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.

November brings “French Connections,” showcasing the formidable talents of organist Michael Surratt and pianist Adam Nieman and music of Bizet, Chopin, and Saint-Saëns.

In January, “Trumpet Glory: German Baroque Masters,” will delight listeners with music of Telemann, C.P.E. Bach and Handel, displaying the talents of soloists from the ESO. In March, violinist Jasmine Lin takes center stage in “Classical Delights,” a captivating afternoon of music by Prokofiev and Mozart. The season ends in May with “Mahler Immersion!,” a grand night of powerful music that will bring the season to a rousing conclusion.

Kloet, Parks to speak at EC commencement ceremonies At this year’s commencement ceremonies, the Elmhurst College Board of Trustees will confer honorary doctoral degrees on two accomplished leaders with strong ties to the College.

Thomas A. Kloet, a global business leader and trustee emeritus of Elmhurst College, will be honored Thomas Sharon at the undergraduate ceremony on A. Kloet Daloz Parks Saturday, May 26, and will deliver the commencement address. Sharon Daloz Parks, who speaks nationally ate ceremony on Thursday, May 24, on leadership, ethics and spirituality, and will speak to the master’s degree will receive her degree at the gradu- recipients.

“Elmhurst College is privileged to be able to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of these two outstanding individuals, and we look forward to hearing from them during our graduation ceremonies,” said President Troy D. VanAken.

Kloet was CEO of Toronto’s TMX Group, parent of the Toronto Stock Exchange and other Canadian financial markets, from 2008 until his retirement in 2014. Before joining TMX Group, he served as senior executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Americas for

Fimat Group, a unit of the International Bank Societe Generale. Kloet also was the chief executive officer of Singapore Exchange, where he led the merger of that country’s stock and derivatives exchanges and its initial public offering. He continues to serve the Elmhurst College Board of Trustees as a trustee emeritus, following his 12-year role as a trustee.

Kloet will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

Parks is principal of Leadership for the New Commons and senior fellow at the Whidbey Institute in Clinton,

Wash. At the Harvard University Divinity School, Parks studied under Richard R. Niebuhr, son of H. Richard Niebuhr (Class of 1912), the sixth president of Elmhurst College.

Parks has written about young adults and their spiritual development, as well as broader topics on ethics and leadership. In 2011 she published a 10th anniversary edition of her book, “Big Questions, Worthy Dreams: Mentoring Emerging Adults in Their Search for Meaning, Purpose, and Faith.” Parks will receive an honorary Doctor of Divinity.

DuPage Care Center Foundation to host golf outing The DuPage Care Center Foundation and CartonCraft, Inc., are pleased to present the Care Center’s 15th Annual Golf Outing. This event will be held on Wednesday, June 6 at the Prairie Landing Golf Club in West Chicago. The community is invited to attend and support this annual event, presented by CartonCraft, Inc. Things have turned the corner for the Timothy Christian boys tennis team.

The Trojans were 5-6 overall and 2-2 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play through mid-last week.

“We started 0-4 without several starters,” said Timothy coach Keith Mills. “We have had several nice wins lately.”

One of those was a 3-2 victory over “an experienced St. Viator team we had lost to last year,” said Mills.

Timothy also was a 4-1 winner over conference rival Riverside-Brookfield where Jack Rhiner played “solid tennis,” Mills noted, at No. 1 singles.

Micah Bosman and Austin Hoogendorn had a strong win against Illiana Christian recently (7-6, 4-6, 12-10 in the tiebreaker).

Bosman and Hoogendorn were 11-3 through mid-last week with two of those losses coming to Wheaton Academy’s No. 1 team, which Mills said will be a top-eight team in the state.

“Micah and Austin have played very well this season,” said Mills.

“Micah has been the biggest plus this season, jumping from JV as a freshman and now winning consistently at No. 1 doubles. Austin has improved his serve and serve return and has become a force at the top of the doubles lineup.”

Rhiner, Mills explained, is the only player to be in the singles division the majority of the season. His No. 1 singles mark was 5-3 through mid-last week. He holds key wins over Francis W. Parker and Willowbrook.

Mills also lauded the performances of his first and second doubles tandems. Joel Daniels missed part of the season, but has jumped into first doubles with Rhiner (where they are 3-1) or Luke DeVries (where they are 3-0).

Mills said the weather has done his team zero favors this spring. “Considering the weather has hampered the entire season, we have had only a few

York girls badminton team wins sectional title Dukes also take home WSC Silver Division crown

The York girls badminton team doubled its fun recently.

The Dukes not only won the West Suburban Conference Silver Division overall title, but also won their own York sectional title and qualified the maximum six players for this weekend’s state finals tournament in downstate Charleston at Eastern Illi-

nois University.

For starters, the Dukes won the overall WSC Silver Division title by taking second at the WSC Silver tournament, finishing a scant one point behind Downers Grove North.

However, when York’s point totals from the regular season were added in with its conference tournament finish, the Dukes were crowned overall Silver champions.

York was 4-1 going into the conference tournament in a three-way tie with Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central. York’s only loss was to Lyons, while Lyons only loss was to Hinsdale and Hinsdale’s only loss was to York.

All York players in the tournament medaled in either singles or doubles.

In singles, Linnea Dierkshiede took third at No. 1. Laura Hyink was

fourth at No. 2 singles, while Aleksina Jovic was third at No. 3 singles.

Bethany Wilms was second at No. 4 singles. Martha Eaton competed at No. 5 singles. Kirsten Drost won the No. 6 singles title, while Jenna Gallichio took third at No. 7 singles. Elena Vezmar was third at No. 8 singles, while Sam Reed was second at No. 9 singles. Jess Reed won the No. 10 singles title.

Gallichio and Sam Reed took third at No. 1 doubles. Wilms and Drost took fourth at No. 2 doubles, while Dierkshiede and Hyink were second at No. 3 singles. Vezmar and Jess Reed took first at No. 4 doubles, while Easton and Jovic won the No. 5 doubles title.

York’s junior-varsity team also won the overall conference title by going undefeated in the regular-season conference schedule and winning the WSC Silver tournament.

The York freshman team took second overall in conference.

York then won its own York sectional that also featured Elk Grove, Evanston, Vernon Hills, Maine East and Chicago Taft.

Dierksheide won the sectional singles title, while Hyink took second.

Both advanced to state.

Gallichio and Sam Reed won the sectional doubles title, while Wilms and Drost took third. Both doubles teams also are headed to Charleston.

Dierksheide won her first match 21-13, 21-6 over Vernon Hills and won 21-12, 21-7 over Elk Grove Village before beating teammate Hyink 21-12, 21-14 for the title.

Hyink won her first match 218, 21-9 over Maine East and then scored an 18-21, 21-15, 21-12 win over Elk Grove Village to advance to the title match.

Gallichio and Sam Reed won 213, 23-21 over Elk Grove and then downed an Evanston team 21-3, 21-10 before defeating a second Elk Grove team 21-14, 22-20 for the doubles title.

Wilms and Drost won 21-13, 2110 in their first-round match and then lost 16-21, 21-12, 21-13 in their second match before scoring a 21-19, 18-21, 21-16 win and then recording a 21-14, 21-15 victory in the thirdplace match.

Trojans baseball team shuts out Elmwood Park twice

The Timothy Christian boys track team took fourth out of 11 teams at the Chicago Christian invitational.

“The team continues to work hard and continues to show improvement,” said Timothy coach John Vander Kamp.

Key individuals on this year’s squad include Clint Fincher (3,200 and 1,600 runs), Carson Hooker (sprints and relays), Caleb Marshall (3,200 and 1,600 runs), Xavier Ross (sprints and hurdles) and Will Terpstra (3,200 and 1,600 runs) Ross already has run well under the state-qualifying time in the 300 hurdles in two of the team’s recent meets.

Timothy Christian is building up to the Metro Suburban Conference meet on Friday and the sectional meet on the following Friday (May 18).

“We believe everyone will be coming up with some big personal bests,” said Vander Kamp.

In the first inning of Game 1 (a 10-0 Timothy win), Harrison Stanton walked and advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher. Jimmy

Allen then beat out an infield single, scoring Stanton. After Allen stole second, Nick Huisman drove him in with a double down the right-field line.

In the second, Thomas Becvar doubled to center, Ethan Roemmich singled to left with Becvar advancing to third. Becvar scored on a groundball fielder’s choice by Garrett Pullen. Trent Marera walked and Stanton singled to load the bases. Allen walked, scoring Pullen.

Pullen led off the fourth with a single to center. Marrera doubled to center and Stanton doubled to center, scoring Pullen and Marrera. On a 3-0 count, Allen homered to deep center.

The final run of the inning came on singles by Huisman and Becvar and an error by the right fielder.

In the bottom of the fifth, Marrera singled, Stanton and Huisman walked and Connor Gwaltney hit a sacrifice fly to deep right-center that scored Marrera.

Allen went 2-for-2 with four RBI. Huisman pitched a five-inning, threehit shutout. He struck out seven. He also helped himself at the plate with an RBI double. Stanton was 2-for2 with two RBI, while Marrera and Becvar also each had two hits. Timothy had 12 hits in the game.

Timothy also won the second game of the series 13-0 in five innings. The Trojans scored two in the first, six in the second and three in the third to blow it open. The Trojans had 14 hits.

Linnea Dierksheide (sectional champion) and Laura Hyink qualified in singles while the teams of Jenna Gallichio and Sam Reed and Bethany Wilms and Kirsten Drost made it to state in doubles. York’s boys’ gymnastics team is sending Charlie Cripe, Kelvin Stevens Jr., John Gill, Jake Anderson and Dominic Milazzo to the state meet.

Timothy Christian recently held its athletic signing day in its Brandsma Family Foundation Room in the upper level of the Ward Athletic Center.

Eleven Timothy student-athletes are moving on to play in college, two of whom have scholarships at NCAA Division I and II schools.

Jimmy Allen will play baseball at Division I Western Michigan University. Allen is an all-state player who is a three-time all-conference selection.

Brandon Orange will play basketball at Wheaton College. Orange is an all-conference selection and has a conference MVP crown to his credit.

Nick Huisman will play baseball at Division II Lewis University in Romeoville, while Connor Gwaltney will play baseball at Knox College.

Michael Thomas is headed to Carthage College to play basketball, while Michael Martens is headed to

The Trojans closed out the week with a 4-3 MSC crossover loss to IC Catholic Prep. The Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a double, three singles and a walk.

But Timothy came right back and took the lead in the top of the fifth. Marrera doubled to left and scored when Stanton reached on a throwing error.

that it was so rare that I would probably never meet another SCAD survivor,” she said, “and there were no answers as to why a tear develops in the artery, how to treat it, or how to prevent it from happening again.”

In 2011, Zich read a Wall Street Journal about Dr. Sharonne Hayes, cardiologist and founder of the Women’s Heart Clinic at Mayo Clinic, who was conducting the first comprehensive SCAD research study.

Zich applied and was accepted in the study. The article allowed SCAD survivors to connect through an online SCAD registry. To date, the registry has more than 900 members and a Facebook group stemming from the study has more than 2,500 SCAD survivor members worldwide.

A year later, Zich read an article about a former Naperville resident, Bob Alico, who had started SCAD Research, Inc., an organization to raise money for SCAD research after his wife died of SCAD at age 51. Zich attended SCAD Research, Inc.’s National 5K SCADaddle for Research fundraiser and for the first time met fellow SCAD survivors, including Elmhurst resident Karen Butterfield. It was unbelievable to both Karen and Zich that two SCAD survivors lived in Elmhurst.

Lydia Killian, Zich’s best friend of more than 30 years, joined her on the 5K Walk. (In 1999, Zich and Killian bought homes in Elmhurst the same week.) Lydia’s sister Gail who lived in South Carolina donated to Zich’s 5K team and told her she wished she could be there walk with her. Two weeks later, Gail died of SCAD. “It was inconceivable that two close families could be stricken by such a rare condition,” said Zich. “I knew I wanted to get involved with SCAD Research, Inc., but Gail’s

death gave it more meaning. Lydia and I have been on the 5K planning committee for the past five years and I have chaired the 5K event for the last three years. Karen Butterfield has also been on the planning committee. The Elmhurst presence is strong.”

More about SCAD Over its seven-year existence, SCAD Research, Inc. has donated $635,000 to the Mayo Clinic SCAD Research program. SCAD is responsible for forty percent of heart attacks in women under 50 and is now considered the leading cause of heart attacks in women under age 50, pregnant women and new moms.

Ninety percent of SCAD patients are women, most of whom were healthy and had no risk factors for heart disease.

By Marisa Mancini When Carol Zich’s brother Paul passed away in 2009 from a heart attack at age 47, she immediately became concerned with her cardiac health.

“Even though I was only 49, I had a full cardiac exam,” said Zich, an Elmhurst resident of 19 years. “I was so relieved when my doctor told me my heart was perfectly healthy and my general health was fine.”

But nine months after her brother’s death, Zich herself suffered a heart attack. She stated she was feeling fine on that day, when suddenly she felt pain at the exact same time in both her arms, followed by chest pain.

“It never occurred to me it could be my heart, because I was recently told my heart was fine,” she added.

A friend drove her to the Emergency Room, where her EKG and blood work were negative. The doctors told her she was having a panic attack, but admitted her for observation. Zich’s friend, a nurse practitioner, had come to visit her and was in her hospital room when Zich began experiencing unbearable chest pain again. She had an angiogram the next morning and was told she had a heart attack, but given no explanation why.

The practice sees all types of foot problems for patients ages 1- 101, but each doctor has an area of specialty as well. Dr. McNeill is a runner and specializes in youth and adult athletes, including weekend warriors. Dr. Arain specializes in Diabetic limb salvage and preventative care, and Dr. Doyle is the surgical specialist, performing all types of procedures from bunions and hammertoes to complex tendon repair.

Most importantly, Drs. McNeill, Arain and Doyle bring a personal touch to every patient they see, treating each and every patient the way they want their own family to be treated.

Being a woman in business, it can be difficult to keep up with all that’s important to us. Coming up on our 12th anniversary, I have so much to be thankful for. My two daughters, who have grown up in the store, continue to help me on weekends even though Kasie has gone onto teaching and Robbie has a successful photography business of her own. (StatePoint) Career aspirations are driving more students to graduate school these days, and nearly two thirds believe an advanced degree is the new minimum standard level of education for any professional occupation.

According to “How America Pays for Graduate School,” the new national study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, an independent global market research company, nearly all grad students (95 percent) said an advanced degree is necessary to enter, advance, accelerate or remain competitive in their chosen career.

Cost is less of a factor in the enrollment decision than it is at the undergraduate level, as more than eight in 10 surveyed based their enrollment decision on a school’s academic offerings, prestige, location, campus culture, or other personal consideration. Four Leaf Clovers Garden Center is now celebrating its 25th season in Elmhurst, returning for the fourth year to 990 N. York Rd. just southwest of Grand Avenue at MB Financial Bank.

Owner Jill Kuehnle Hennessy learned the business from her father, James Kuehnle, who owned multiple produce stores and has been retailing plants since 1959. Jim continues to be an invaluable advisor to his daughter. He and his wife Anne and their children have ten individually operated garden centers in the Chicago area and suburbs.

In addition to critical collaboration with her parents and other family members, Jill relies on her Clovers team, which is predominantly made up of women, for daily operation.

Back this season are Margaret Case, Sue Forsyth, Jacquie Hund, Natalie Nelson, and Freddy Porps. Representing the male constituency are veteran employees Pat O’Connor, R.J. Nelson and David Prabhu. Meet Diane Kilcommons, Center Director of Huntington of Elmhurst Huntington Learning Center helps every student become the best academic version of him/herself.

Diane Kilcommons has a Master’s degree in Education and has taught for 34 years, including home educating her 4 children. Diane and her husband Mark have owned Huntington Learning Center for the past 8 years. Huntington Learning Center helps children improve their skills in reading, writing, spelling, math and phonics. They also help students prepare for college with their individualized exam prep programs. Higher test scores mean more opportunities. When asked, what inspired you to be a teacher? Diane replied, “I believe my desire to be a teacher was a God given gift. In addition to managing a learning center, Diane was very active in raising her children. Currently, Pat and John are at Darmouth College on scholarship studying and playing football on the offensive line. Though it was founded by men, George Matthew Smith and his son George Cyrus Smith, it is currently owned by the great-grand daughter and 4th generation, Cathie Smith. Cathie is the 2nd woman to own and run the family owned real estate business. Cathie and her mom Ana Smith took over the business when Ana’s husband and 3rd generation George C. Smith passed away in 1993. Cathie took over full ownership when Ana retired in 2009. There are three other women currently working at the local real estate office and they are all experienced real estate brokers that are happy to assist you with all of your real estate needs.

Pam Smith grew up in Lombard and currently resides in Villa Park. Pam has many years of experience and is familiar with most of the suburban areas.

Pam is married, has a daughter and is a huge animal lover. She has been a member of Yorkie Rescue for many years.

Nicole Napientek grew up in Villa Park and currently resides in Wood Dale.

Courtney and her fiancé will be tying the knot in August of this year and their 1 ½ year old golden retriever will be escorting the mother of the bride down the aisle.

Nicki is a personal fitness trainer with over 25 years of fitness and nutrition experience. She has served the Elmhurst, Oak Brook and surrounding communities for the past 15 years.

Watching my stepfather slowly deteriorate as he got older was the main reason I opened Dynamic Strength.

Several years ago, I noticed my stepfather starting to slow down. His daily tasks were becoming more difficult for him and I noticed he started to shuffle a little bit when he walked. Getting girls interested in STEAM subjects (StatePoint) Science, art and math are becoming increasingly important school subjects to embrace.

Here are five ways to ensure your girls get interested and stay interested in these critical subjects through the years.

1. Get involved early. Setting a foundation of math, science and the arts is essential to getting young children, especially girls, interested in continued learning. Encourage them from a young age to participate in hands-on science, arts and math activities, and those with an interest or aptitude in these subjects will continue to pursue these paths as they learn and grow.

2. Find practical applications. Science, art and math are an integral part of everyday life. Finding the practical applications as you go about your day, demonstrates for children of all ages how important these subjects really are in life. Use the weather report as an opportunity to discuss meteorology. Bake with your daughter and work on figuring out measurements for doubling recipes. On the road? Have your daughter calculate the distance from your current location to your destination, as well as the amount of gasoline you’ll need to get there. Seeing math, science, and art in the world will help keep kids engaged.

3. Provide intuitive tools. Intuitive

learning tools can foster a better understanding of a subject and make learning easier, encouraging students to continue their studies with enthusiasm. When visiting Kie&Kate Couture, you would never think this fashionable women’s boutique once started in the owner’s home, but it did. Kate Kemph was a first grade teacher when she put her career on hold to stay at home and raise her then two children. Not long after her second child was born, Kate found herself missing the creative stimulation she once utilized while teaching. She started making all the bedding and other things for her kid’s rooms. Kate had been a seamstress for a long time; she learned to sew when she was 10 years old and never put that needle down. Sewing and making things was a hobby of hers. What she didn’t know was that one day she would turn that hobby into a successful business. Kate first started making children’s clothing and hair accessories that she sold in vendor shows for Kie&Kate in 2008. People fell in love with Kate’s style of clothing and jewelry and the demand for her products grew.

What had started as a silver lining for Kate and her family during the recession turned into a big success. In September 2011, Kate opened her store front in Elmhurst with the help of her husband, Steve Kemph. At first he helped Kate with the business operations of the store, but after completing the Golden Sachs Business Program, she felt prepared to take over all aspects of the business. From the start, Kate’s underlying goal for her store has remained the same; to maintain a reasonable price point so she can be affordable to women knowledgeable of the latest fashions.

Today, Kate has 3 children, Kiely who’s 11 and shares part of the business name, Dean which is 10 and Liam who is 4. Both Kiely and Dean have grown up around the store and have learned different parts of the business. They have also become part of Kate’s support system. This year Kie&Kate will celebrate its 7th year on Spring Road and she owes her success to her support system and her employees whom she calls her team.

She said, “I love my team!”

Report claims Illinois needs $21 billion per year to fix state buildings, facilities, transportation systems Study: “Illinois’ leaders and policymakers have failed to provide adequate funding for crucial capital maintenance and construction projects.”

The deteriorating condition of Illinois’ transportation systems, state owned facilities, education buildings, and veterans’ homes have resulted in residents across the state experiencing pothole filled roads, overcrowded schools, and poorly maintained university buildings and state facilities.

The annual cost of needed repairs and investment currently stands at $21 billion per year, according to a new study released last week by the Illinois Economic Policy Institute (ILEPI).

Illinois’ state facilities occupy more than 8,700 buildings and 100 million square-feet of floor space, ranging from prisons and mental hospitals to universities and state parks.

Despite the importance of state facilities – with students, patients, and staff depending on safe buildings and conditions – funding to provide proper maintenance has faltered.

Historically, transportation, edu-

cation, and public service agencies throughout Illinois could depend on a capital bill approximately every 10 years. However, Illinois’ last capital bill, “Illinois Jobs Now!,” was passed in 2008.

“The state’s transportation systems and building facilities are deteriorating and will only continue to get worse,” said study author Mary Craighead. “The failure to adequately fund maintenance undermines the state’s economic success and increases both financial costs and safety risks to Illinois residents.”

In making the case for urgent capital funding, Craighead notes that deferred maintenance needs of state buildings and facilities total over $7 billion for fiscal year 2019. The Departments of Corrections and Health and Human Services alone account for over 50% of deferred maintenance needs, at about $2 billion each. Both of these departments operate facilities 24-hours a day, thus making improvements vital for the residents and staff.

“The Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy is a tragic example of the extreme hazards that deferred maintenance can have on Illinois residents,” Craighead added, explaining that the state-run facility has been battling Legionnaires’ disease since 2015 as

a result of its 132-year-old plumbing.

A total of 13 people have died and at least 61 residents and staff have been infected between three separate outbreaks over three years. The Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs has stated that the facility will likely never be rid of the disease as long as the original plumbing remains in place.

The report also notes that of the $21 billion per year, over $9 billion can be attributed to education facilities. Local school districts are using over 750 temporary classrooms due to needed building additions and repairs. Additionally, more than $4 billion per year is required just to address backlog needs for Illinois’ roads, bridges, and transit systems.

“Capital investment in Illinois’ infrastructure systems is crucial to promote a thriving and economically successful state,” Craighead concluded. “Illinois’ transportation, education, and public facilities are too important to allow continued neglect.

It is time for lawmakers to seriously discuss viable funding options and sustainable, adequate capital funding to address these severe shortfalls.”

Higher salaries, more jobs may be coming for U.S. workers (StatePoint) Small and mid-size business owners are feeling more optimistic than they have for a long time, suggests a new survey, and experts say this could mean positive things for the overall economy -including for workers’ salaries and job-seekers’ prospects.

According to the PNC Economic Outlook, optimism is running at historic highs in all categories that the semiannual survey of small and medium-size business owners evaluates. This is reflected by the 85 percent of respondents who selected a positive emotion to describe how they feel about the business climate during the next six months, (from the time of the survey): hope (39 percent), enthusiasm (37 percent) and joy (9 percent).

The survey also points to some good news for the American workforce: 49 percent of business leaders anticipate increasing their employee compensation in the next six months and 32 percent expect to add full-time staff. However, four out of 10 respondents say it’s harder to hire qualified employees today compared to six months ago, with the biggest challenge being lack of experience or skill.

“Small businesses are a key source of economic activity and employment, and owners’ perceptions can be a good indicator of what’s to come,” says Gus Faucher, chief economist of The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. “Our overall findings confirm that U.S. economic expansion will likely continue throughout 2018.”

ComEd customers have saved more than $3 billion by making smarter energy choices Nearly 115 million efficient bulbs sold, 380,000 appliances recycled since 2008

Every one of ComEd’s more than 4 million customers could put about $15 toward groceries every week for a year with the money they have saved thanks to the company’s energy efficiency program. That’s more than $3 billion total since the program started in 2008.

Residential, commercial, and industrial customers have used 27.9 million fewer net megawatt-hours of electricity because of ComEd’s energy efficiency offerings – enough to power 3.1 million average homes for a year. Offerings range from free assessments of homes and businesses to rebates and incentives for buying or investing in products or changing habits that reduce energy consumption.

“More and more customers are discovering that they can take advantage of ComEd programs to take

greater control of their energy use, save money, and reduce their carbon footprint,” said Anne Pramaggiore, president and CEO of ComEd, “and we’ve seen the power of smart and creative ideas that show customers the way. Cullerton takes aim at excessive tax payouts to fired public officials State Senator Tom Cullerton is working with the Better Government Association (BGA) to put a stop to bloated golden parachutes for failed state employees.

Senate Bill 3604 eliminates severance packages for employees that have been fired for misconduct and limits government-paid severance packages to an amount no greater than 20 weeks of compensation. Cullerton expects it to be heard by the full Senate this week.

“Giving out golden parachutes to poorly-behaved public officials isn’t just bad policy, it’s theft,” Cullerton said. “This is a commonsense reform that protects the public from bailing out bad actors. It is plain and simple – if you betray the trust of DuPage County taxpayers, you will not be rewarded with taxpayer money.”

The BGA and Cullerton have been working together to fight the misuse of taxpayer dollars.

“For too long, taxpayers have had to foot six-figure severance deals to make public executives go away,” said Madeleine Doubek, the BGA’s Policy and Civic Engagement Director. “Being asked to leave, often under questionable circumstances, shouldn’t be like hitting a lottery jackpot. With Sen. Cullerton’s leadership, the Government Severance Pay Act will bring a fair, commonsense approach to ending golden parachutes.”

employment litigation, Cullerton said. By adopting the Government Severance Pay Act, state lawmakers can set a clean, clear path that will eliminate those decisions for elected officials. Similar policies are in place in other states, including Florida.

“Now is the time to get control of these huge buyouts and institute some best practices,” Cullerton said.

Cullerton has continued to call for tougher regulations to stop state universities and community colleges from buying out administrators that are under investigation or found guilty of mismanagement. This is another step in his quest to put an end to this wasteful practice.

“Our state cannot afford to waste a single penny, especially to help folks who treat taxpayers like their own personal piggy bank,” Cullerton said.

If passed by the full Senate, the bill would go to the House for further approval.

Measure aims to increase access to mental health support for students House Bill 5770, which seeks to improve access to supportive services in schools for students throughout Illinois, recently passed, according to State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park).

“This bill addresses the serious but often overlooked issue of mental health in our schools,” said Conroy, who serves as Chair of the House Mental Health Committee. “Oftentimes, parents and families simply are not aware of the resources that are available to help their children, and my legislation seeks to increase access to the information and education about these resources. This bill requires every school district in the state of Illinois to notify every parent that they may be eligible for supportive services through a 504 plan if their student has a mental health diagnosis.”

House Bill 5770 requires school boards to notify students and parents of school-based supportive mental

health services that the student could be eligible to receive. Mental health services are guaranteed under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of physical or mental disability. Illinois schools receive federal funding to provide special education services to fulfill the requirements of Section 504. There is currently no requirement that school districts proactively notify families that their child could be eligible for services. The bill passed the House with unanimous support.

“Mental health is an invisible disability that many of our students deal with in silence,” said Conroy “We have so many students struggling with anxiety and depression and we have a responsibility to ensure they have the support they need to be healthy and successful. This bill is one step of many that we must take to bring positive change to our mental health system.”
