Thomas O. Myers, Jr. passes away at 96

Elmhurst resident Thomas O. Myers Jr., owner and president of Thomas O. Myers Real Estate in Elmhurst, passed away on Thursday, April 1 at the age of 96. He was born on Dec. 29, 1924.

Myers, along with his wife, Shirley, is the second generation of family leadership in a real estate business founded in 1920 by his father. He began working with his father following his service in the U.S. Navy as an X-ray technician during WWII. Myers had five children from a previous marriage – Thomas III, John, Donald, Kathy and Helen -and two sons, David and Paul, with his wife Shirley. His eldest daughter Kathy pre-deceased him.

His nephew Tom Cathcart recalls going to the Rainbow Restaurant about once a month or so.

“We would just sit look out the window and shoot the breeze,” Cathcart recalled. “He always liked to say that he had ‘arranged’ the breakfast for us, or ‘glad you didn’t find a better opportunity to spend your day elsewhere.’ He was a joker like that.”

Cathcart, whose mother was Tom’s youngest sister, also recalls his uncle being there for him when times were tough.

“When I lost my job in 2008, he loaned me money, but I paid everything back in full,” Cathcart said.

“He was like that, he always had my back.”

Service to the hospital Since 1961, Myers had volunteered his time and donated his money in support of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and its Board of Governors, including 30 years of service on the Finance, Building & Grounds Committee and Public Relations Committee. For almost 25 years, he chaired or co-chaired the Governors’ Fall Benefit Dinner, which brought in as much as $70,000 a year.

The Myers also have endowed a scholarship fund for children of hospital employees who pursue academ-

ic studies in a medical or health-related course of study.

Myers was recognized in 1990 with the Governors’ Distinguished Service Award for his contributions and commitment to the hospital.

The late Darrell Whistler, who served as Vice President of the Board of Trustees for Elmhurst Hospital at that time, noted that Myers “goes about his involvement that enhances Elmhurst in a quiet unassuming manner, but when it is all said and done, major accomplishments occur when Tom is involved.”

Myers also was a past president of the Elmhurst Family YMCA Businessman Club and DuPage Family Services’ Board of Directors and was a Director (1971-91) for the Elmhurst National Bank for 20 years.

In 2003, Tom received the Elmhurst Jaycees’ Distinguished Service Award with a lavish banquet held in his honor.

Myers Real Estate has been a member of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry since 1935. Myers served on the ChamService to the ber’s Board of Directors and is a Past College/University Chairman (then President). Also, Elmhurst College (at that time) he is a three-time Ambassador of awarded one of its highest accolades, the Founders Medal, to the Myers in recognition of their “lifetimes of building, directing and accomplishing.” Founders Medalists have unique relationships with the College in the areas of personal commitment, service and involvement, and philanthropic assistance.

Ken Bartels, then-vice president for college advancement at Elmhurst College, endorsed Myers as “a leader, doer and difference-maker.”

“Tom Myers is a man of significant achievement and serious dedication to Elmhurst,” Bartels said.

The Myers recently established an endowed scholarship fund at Elmhurst College to provide assistance for students who demonstrate financial need and who serve as managers for the Bluejays’ intercollegiate athletic teams.

Service to a vast community Myers was a long-time member and Past Commander (1960) of the Elmhurst American Legion THB Post 187, serving as the 11th District Commander in 1969, and a Life Member of the Elmhurst Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2048. In 1983, the American Legion honored him as its Citizen of the Year.

He was a member of the Elmhurst Elks Lodge #1531 for more than 50 years and is a former member of the

Like his father, Myers was a member and Past President (1956 and 1974) of the former DuPage Board of Realtors, which named him Realtor of the Year in 1978.

“My grandfather was really a mover and a shaker,” Cathcart continued.

“He was on the Board of Elmhurst National Bank, and Myers Real Estate was the firm instrumental in selling the homes in the Emory Manor

and Brynhaven subdivisions. They sold everyone of those houses. He was also involved in the St. Charles West apartment complex after the war.”

Cathcart recalls the house at 419 N. York.

“My grandfather bought the house across the street from what is now Culver’s, before that it was a Burger King,” he said. “They used it as their offices for years and years. Lots of family members worked for the business, first my uncle [Tom Myers] then his younger sister, then my Aunt Marilyn and my mother Marjorie.

Music@Bethel presents virtual concert with Julian Chin Trio On Saturday, May 1 at 7 p.m., jazz returns to Bethel United Church of Christ’s concert series with a performance by the Julian Chin Trio.

Under the leadership of jazz pianist Julian Chin, the concert is to be live streamed from PianoForte Chicago’s showroom, and will showcase an eclectic mix of pieces drawing from the entire spectrum of American Popular Song.

Julian Chin is a performer and educator from the Chicago area, where he has established himself as an eclectic musician competent in a wide variety of styles. A frequent contributor to the Music at First series at First United Church in Oak Park, he can also be seen performing jazz at venues like Andy’s Jazz

Club and the Green Mill; hip hop at venues like the Beat Kitchen and Bottom Lounge; and modern rock at Martyrs’ and Schubas Tavern. In addition to his work in contemporary music, Julian also serves as the Music Director for Temple Jeremiah in Northfield, Illinois.

Band members include Julian Chin on piano, Ben Dillinger on double bass and Andrew Green on drums.

City approves settlement of slip-and-fall litigation

At the request of Mayor Steve Morley, Elmhurst City Attorney Don Storino explained a Resolution that appeared on the agenda of the Elmhurst City Council meeting held Monday, April 5.

“This is a personal injury claim arising from a trip-and-fall incident that occurred on a public sidewalk at the southwest corner of Addison and Third Streets about Sept. 8, 2018,”

Storino said. “The plaintiff in the matter asked for $100,000 as a settlement, but the court recommended $50,000 and as a result, that’s what we are prepared to pay to settle the case.”

The settlement of $50,000 was approved by a vote of the City Council.

This approval is allowable under the provisions of Article VII, Section 6 of the Illinois Constitution, as Elmhurst is a home rule unit of government.

As part of its Consent Agenda at the Monday, April 5 meeting, the City Council approved the appointment of a number of residents to various Boards and Commissions.

It is Mayor Steve Morley who appoints or reappoints people to their positions then the full City Council moves to approve. All appointments were approved. Resident condemns racist signs at Dulles Cleaners Asks what City Council can do to promote inclusion

At the City Council meeting held Monday, April 5, an Elmhurst resident of Asian descent spoke during public forum, condemning signs posted recently in the windows of Dulles Cleaners. Although the signs have been taken down, one said, “Pray for the removal of demonic Chinese influence in our country.”

“This sign was offensive and perpetuates hatred,” said Andrew Kim, who is of Korean descent and lives in an apartment on North Addison near Dulles Cleaners. “It is poor to do especially now when Asian hatred in the U.S. has increased 150%.

Signs like that foster violence and when others see signs like that, they are emboldened to continue to use [hateful language].”

Kim did note that owner John Dulles had apologized, stating he was condemning the Chinese government, not the Chinese people, but Kim saw no difference – it still fosters hatred toward Asians.

In its March 25 issue, the Elmhurst Independent reported on the sign and the reaction it brought from not just Asian people but also many residents of Elmhurst.

Asked to explain himself, Dulles told the Independent that five months ago, he made a sign that said the Chinese people were responsible for COVID and he knows

that was a mistake.

“I realized what I should have said was the Chinese communist government was responsible, not the Chinese people,” Dulles told the Independent in an interview.

“I’ve always had signs on the walls [of my business] and changed them every week. You can tell that I’m a Republican and a Trump supporter and people will walk by the store and scrunch up their face in disapproval or even give ‘the finger.’

“Someone took a picture of that sign [demonizing the Chinese people] and posted on the Internet and that’s when everyone started calling me a racist, they’re trying to smear me. I took the sign down five months ago and apologized for the fact that I referred to the Chinese people rather than their government.

“I strongly believe these are Democrats out to smear me. If they disagree with you, they call you a racist. They want you to cower in the corner, well, I don’t do that, I don’t cower.”

Kim hoped this would be a wakeup call for Dulles.

“I hope [Mr. Dulles] would use this moment as an opportunity to learn that words DO matter and that he should use different language when addressing the Asian people,” he said. “What is the City doing to encourage more inclusive language and to condemn hatred language, especially on the streets of downtown Elmhurst?”

As is customary at public forum, the City Council offered no immediate reply.

Elmhurst’s 100+ Women Who Care donates more than $14,000 to DuPage PADS The Elmhurst Area 100+ Women Who Care awarded their first quarter 2021 donation to DuPage PADS (People Active to Deliver Shelter). The Elmhurst-based women’s giving circle selected DuPage PADS to support their mission to address homelessness which has become increasingly critical to the health and well-being of the community.

“I am so grateful to be a member of an amazing group of women committed to improving lives in our community,” said Marilyn Boria, one of the inaugural members of 100+ Women Who Care. “Our gift to DuPage PADS, which will provide shelter for home-

less families, is just one of many transformative projects we have supported over the years.”

“The solution to end homelessness is more complex than providing individuals with food and shelter,” stated Raita Vilnins, 100+ Women Who Care member, who presented DuPage PADS to the group. “Our donation will provide families with small children overnight hotel-based shelter and wrap-around services (including medical care, school connections for remote learning, etc.) to achieve permanent housing.“ Founded in 1985, DuPage PADS is the largest provider of interim and per-

manent housing, coupled with support services in order to help individuals work toward becoming self-sufficient.

Their signature year-round programs feed and shelter individuals and families who are homeless and connect them to case management as well as other services to address the underlying causes of their homelessness.

“We are so grateful to the wonderful members of Elmhurst 100+ Women Who Care for their generosity,” said April Redzic, president and CEO, DuPage PADS. “There are more people seeking emergency shelter than ever before—and the largest number of families with small children that

we’ve seen in the history of our organization.

“Right now, more than 200 individuals are in our hotel-based Emergency Shelter. More than 1/3 of them are children. Tonight, 63 children will sleep safely in rooms with their families because of the commitment and impact of Elmhurst 100+ Women Who Care.”

Along with the $14,100 donation from 100+ Women Who Care, a check was presented to DuPage PADS from Pots with Purpose. Shannon Keating, business owner of the local potted flower creations business, joined with the 100+ women’s organization to support their selected quarterly non-profit.

The Elmhurst 100+ Women Who Care giving circle, founded in 2013 by five Elmhurst women, has donated more than $450,000 to local non-profit organizations.

Local schools set to receive nearly $300 million: Cullerton

City receives AAA bond rating According to a release from the City of Elmhurst issued by Finance Director Thomas Trosien, Standard and Poor’s (S&P) Global Ratings assigned its AAA long-term rating to Elmhurst’s $9.61 million series 2021 general obligation (GO) bonds. The city will use bond proceeds for storm water capital projects and to refund the series 2012 GO bonds, for interest savings. At the same time, S&P Global Ratings affirmed its AAA rating on the city’s previously issued GO bonds. The City of Elmhurst received its first AAA rating in Dec., 2013 and has maintained it for seven years in a row.

The AAA rating is the highest rating assigned to a governmental organization by S&P and reflects the City’s strong economy, powerful budgetary flexibility and performance, and strong liquidity position and management.

The AAA rating is very significant in the City’s ability to both issue new bonds and refinance existing debt at the lowest possible interest rates. In Illinois, only about 30 of 310 rated municipalities have a AAA rating.

Mazzochi offering free COVID and antibody testing State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) is hosting an outdoor drive-through COVID and antibody testing event in the parking lot of the Westmont Metra Station.

“As parents and students try to get back to work and school, they may need either a negative COVID test, or proof that they have been exposed and developed antibodies,” Mazzochi said. “As more vaccine doses become more available to the general population, people want to take into consideration when making their medical decisions whether they have already been exposed to and developed their own antibodies against the virus.”

Rep. Mazzochi has partnered with testing company IndiviDx to host the event. The outdoor event will be held

in the Westmont Metra Station parking lot at 90 West Quincy Street. Interested test takers have the opportunity to come through on Friday, April 9th from 10am-5pm and on Saturday, April 10th from 10am-3pm. Testing is free to those who do not have insurance and available to everyone, regardless of symptoms.

People testing for COVID will park in parking spots and stay in their cars as medical staff will approach each car for testing. Those who want to get tested for antibodies will need to get out of their cars and receive the test in a sectioned off area next to the tent.

State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D- Villa Park) has announced that school districts in the 23rd District will receive about $285 million in additional funding to help address the many challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With the end of the pandemic in sight, it’s important that districts use these funds to move their schools forward and help uplift students who may have fallen behind,” Cullerton said. “This past year has been hard for students, teachers and parents, but the additional funding to help with the full transition back to the classroom shows them there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

The funding comes as part of the most recent federal COVID-19 relief packages. Schools, students and parents have overcome challenges that no one could have imagined before the pandemic began, including remote and hybrid learning, digital connection

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims.

Police said that subsequent to a disabled vehicle, Wudi gave a false name to officers.

According to police, Wudi was found to be driving while license suspended, had three failure to appear warrants from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, and was in possession of a spoon containing a white substance which tested positive for cocaine.

Criminal defacement, criminal trespass March 29 A reporting officer met with a complainant near S. York and W. Vallette at around 5:37 p.m. who reported four juveniles were throwing eggs at vehicles. The reporting officer later spoke with the juveniles and their parents. A juvenile disposition is pending.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct March 28 Police said officers responded to the 600 block of S. Parkside at around 3:18 a.m. for the report of a domestic battery. The reporting officer met with the victim who reported a verbal argument turned physical. The victim left the residence but later returned and another altercation ensued. The suspect refused to speak to officers. An arrest warrant for domestic battery was obtained.

March 27 A 32-year-old Chicago man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 300 block of N. Shady at around 1:57 a.m. Police said a reporting officer met with the victim who stated the suspect struck her in the face.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol March 29 Francisco G. Rodriguez, 42, of Palatine, was charged with DUI-drugs, driving while license suspended and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a report of a person sleeping behind the wheel of his vehicle in the 400 block of N. York at around 8:34 a.m.

March 26 Marcal Smith, 26, of Rantoul, was charged with DUI, unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver, speeding and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near W. North and Myrtle at around 9:55 p.m.

Fleeing, eluding March 30 A juvenile was issued citations for fleeing and eluding, no valid driver’s license (never issued), violation of curfew, speeding and driving without headlights subsequent to an attempted traffic stop near Route 83 and Lake at around 11:55 p.m. Police said a reporting officer learned that the suspect was entered into LEADS as a missing juvenile/habitual runaway and had taken the vehicle without the owner’s permission.

March 27 A reporting officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a suspect vehicle near Route 83 and I-290 at around 12:13 a.m. The suspect vehicle failed to stop and fled at a high rate of speed, last seen heading eastbound on I-290.

CALL 800-222-TIPS Harassment, threats March 31 A complainant in the 200 block of N. York told police at around 1:46 p.m. that the suspect made a hand gesture in the shape of a gun, verbally threatened him and approached his vehicle while yelling. Glendale Heights police responded to the suspect’s address, made contact with the suspect and advised they were looking into services to assist with the suspect’s mental health. The complainant did not wish to sign complaints.

March 28 A reporting officer met with the complainant in the 200 block of E. Butterfield at around 9:42 p.m. who stated she confronted a reckless driver at the above location and was involved in a verbal argument with the passenger of the vehicle. The unknown female suspect threatened to use mace on the complainant. The driver was described as a black male, last seen wearing a black jacket, and a cast on his right arm. The passenger was described as a black female, last seen wearing a beige top, and leggings. Both suspects entered their vehicles and left the area prior to officers’ arrival. The case is pending investigation.

March 25 A reporting officer met with a victim who stated she received a text message from an unknown suspect threatening to share explicit images with others on the victim’s contact list. The victim had no information on the suspect but wanted the matter documented.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance March 31 Veltcho K. Kocherov, 35, of River Grove, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Willow at around 8:20 p.m.

Angelica Silva, 50, of Downers Grove, was charged with driving while license suspended, operating a vehicle while using an electronic communication device and unlawful possession of cannabis by driver subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 1:44 p.m. Police said Silva also was found to have a valid warrant from the Westmont Police Department.

March 29 Gregory Crosby, 32, of Chicago, was charged with unlawful possession of controlled substance, driving while license suspended, failure to signal when required, and speeding, while Kontavina Paris, 19, of Chicago, a passenger in the vehicle, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis in a vehicle and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near S. Route 83 and W. St. Charles at around 9:09 a.m. Police said Crosby also was found to be on parole, and a parole violation was issued by the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Kelly Olmetti, 37, of Melrose Park, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia in the 400 block of W. Dorchester at around 8:01 a.m.

March 28 Shakur Underwood, 24, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis by the driver, no insurance and driving with only one headlight subsequent to a traffic stop near S. West and W. St. Charles at around 10:09 p.m.

March 26 Joshua Lamping, 22, of Aurora, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near E. St. Charles and S. Arlington at around 10:14 p.m.

March 25 Efrain Quezada, 28, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis by the driver and driving with one headlight subsequent to a traffic stop near E. North and N. Melrose at around 2:09 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances Feb. 1 Police said a reporting officer spoke with a complainant in the 200 block of E. Gladys who stated he believes an ex-employee has been accessing, alerting and deleting computer data. This case is pending investigation.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery March 30 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of S. Arlington at around 6:48 p.m.

A victim told police that a suspect used her

personal information to open a credit card.

An investigation is pending.

March 29 Silvio J. Garippo, 52, of Elmwood Park, and Daniel J. Giallanza, 33, of Chicago, were charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 1:13 p.m. Police said the suspects fled the scene prior to an officer’s arrival but they were later apprehended in Franklin Park.

March 27 Terrell Payton, 24, of Chicago, was charged with possession of a fraudulent ID card, possession of cannabis by the driver, no valid driver’s license, improper lane usage, tinted windows and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near S. Route 83 and W. St. Charles at around 1:52 a.m.

Fraud was reported at an auto dealership in the 700 block of W. Grand at around 2:32 p.m. A reporting officer met with the complainant who reported an unknown suspect attempted to apply for a car loan using a fraudulent ID. The suspect is described as a black male last seen wearing black pants, a black hoodie and black sneakers. The suspect fled prior to an officer’s arrival.

March 26 Attempted retail theft was reported at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 8:51 a.m. A reporting officer met with the complainant who stated an unknown suspect attempted to take several packets of nicotine gum from a locked display. The suspect left the merchandise and ran from the store after being seen by an employee. The offender is described as a white male around 6-2, 150 pounds last seen wearing a surgical mask, tan coat, camouflage jogger pants and light-colored shoes.

March 19-March 26 Identity theft was reported in the 600 block of Fairview. A victim told police that an unknown suspect used her name to file a claim for a traffic accident, which occurred in Belleville on March 19. An investigation is pending.

March 25 Theft by deception was reported in the 300 block of Oak at around 3:10 p.m. A victim told police that he received a notification stating his computer had been hacked. The victim called the phone number provided on the notification and spoke to an unknown suspect purporting to be a Microsoft representative. Upon completing the phone call the victim noticed two unauthorized transactions on his banking account. The victim contacted his bank who stated they will investigate the fraudulent activity.

March 23 Identity theft was reported in the 800 block of S. Berkley at around 6:53 p.m. A victim told police that upon reviewing her credit card statement, she located fraudulent charges which occurred at the Nordstrom store in the Oakbrook Center mall.

Unemployment benefits identity theft

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported four incidents of identity theft with the intention of using a victim’s personal information to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Illinois social services a Wizard of Oz maze in need of navigation ‘coaches’

By Jim Nowlan I was a state agency director on three occasions back in the day, yet I don’t think I could navigate the maze of dozens of separate, and scattered, state and local social service agencies that have sprung up over the decades to address people’s problems. It’s time for a major reset, to simplify and to provide people in distress with “coaches” who can help navigate the maze.

Cases in point: In the mid-1990s, in the wake of Newt Gingrich’s national welfare reform, I volunteered to assist a social worker friend of mine who had been assigned 13 single mothers.

This baker’s dozen had to work or go to school in order to keep their welfare benefits.

But lack of jobs was far from the mothers’ sole problem. These young ladies were each walking bundles of bad decisions and liabilities/ disabilities: Kids born out of wedlock; school dropouts; drugs; minor rap sheets; mental distress and illness; hanging around with the wrong sorts, and more.

The young women really did want to climb out of their predicaments.

Social worker Judy Leonardelli (now deceased) was a big woman, had been a bouncer at a late-night lounge in my home area early in her life. She was tough, and caring.

Judy assigned me tasks like getting a minor infraction expunged so a young lady could get a low-paying job at a nursing home. The young women typically needed services across DCFS, mental health, child care, housing, welfare, and more. I found nine state social service agencies in Peoria (where we did our thing), all scattered around the city’s metro area.

But most of these women lacked wheels.

One young woman told me she got up at 4 each morning, to get youngster(s) up and going and fed something; catch various buses for them and her to school and to the community college (where Judy met the women), to work, etc. She made it home each day, by a couple/three buses, after picking up the kids, by about 7 or 8 p.m.

Judy was their coach, prod, advocate. She was good. Judy estimated that if 4 of the 13 made it to stable lives, she would consider her work successful.

Case two: A friend of mine in a small central Illinois city recently saw

a woebegone, 40-ish woman looking into his store window. My friend inquired of her. He learned she was staying at the local domestic abuse shelter (a very good operation), but her time limit there was ticking; she was freaking out.

Earlier, Kate (obviously not her real name) had escaped an abusive relationship with a drug dealer in a distant city. He was now apparently cashing her stimulus checks, so she had no money. Kate applied for jobs, but couldn’t pass the drug tests (saying she needed cannabis to calm her).

Kate has mental problems as well, for which a doctor prescribed medications. But when she went to fill same, the pharmacy told her the doc was not in their network, so she needed a significant co-pay, which of course she didn’t have.

When I was a legislator more than half a century ago, Illinois’ huge, Dickensian mental health and “state school” warehouses were thankfully closed. (I visited them; my characterization is too kind). There was a pledge that the foreboding institutions would be replaced with community-based services.

Unfortunately, the local services never came, at least not with adequacy.

Over the decades, however, a patchwork quilt of programs, each with its own physical service location, it seems, has developed. There are dozens of them. (Don’t believe me?

Google social service agencies, or go to the State of Illinois website.)

The intent is good; the fragmentation is not, and given bureaucratic turf defenses, it is not likely there will be much true consolidation.

There are many caring, capable staff at a panoply of agencies, all willing to do their respective pieces to help Kate. Yet none of them, like the pharmacy, deal with Kate’s whole bundle of problems. And so, she falls through the cracks.

People in real distress, with their multiple problems, each need a coach/ prod/advocate like Judy Leonardelli.

The coach would run interference through the maze, help knit the services together, maybe staving off homelessness, which Kate faces.

Our state legislators should stand back and re-evaluate our crazy quilt of state, local and nonprofit social service delivery systems. We can do better.

Glowiak Hilton moves to protect consumers from scam calls

To prevent residents from being misled by phone scams, State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) has advanced an initiative with bipartisan support to outlaw scam call operators from disguising their identity by having a false telephone number show up on caller ID. “As technology advances, scammers use creative, deceitful tactics to trick residents into giving them personal information,” Glowiak Hilton said. “By prohibiting automated solicitors from falsifying caller ID, I hope to protect residents from falling victim to telephone scams.”

In Illinois, the Telephone Solicitations Act requires a live operator to state his or her name, the organization they are representing, and the purpose for the call. The law also prohibits a solicitor from manipulating caller ID, commonly known as spoofing.

Current state law does not address when the caller is not a live operator.

To protect consumers, Glowiak Hilton’s initiative requires the operator of any soliciting telephone call to immediately state the affiliated business and the purpose of the call, and to confirm consent from the receiver.

“Deceitful business practices like spoofing are shameful,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Call authentication is critical for protecting consumers against scammers who mask their identity and intentionally seek to defraud vulnerable residents.”

Senate Bill 2225 passed the Senate Energy and Public Utilities Committee Thursday and moves for further deliberation before the full Senate.

Letters to the editor Why are there signs in the parkway?

I am asking why the City of Elmhurst only allows political signs on your property but not on the city parkway. But the parkway on the south side of City Hall is loaded with probably 100 political signs. Do we have two different sets of rules for political candidates vs homeowners?

BFD president warns about fire station merger State Representative Kathy Willis has introduced a bill in Springfield (HB0693) that will abolish Bensenville Fire District #1 (BFD#1) and merge it with Bensenville Fire District #2 (BFD#2). It will not affect the other 30 or so fire districts in the state like BFD#1.

If you check your real estate tax bill from last year, you will see your tax rate was 0.3433 for BFD#1. People in BFD#2 paid 0.733 This is because their tax includes a pension fund liability that the BFD#1 doesn’t have. If my math is correct, BFD#1 taxes will go up an additional 0.3897.

BFD#1 has no physical plant or firemen. It contracts with Elmhurst and Bensenville for fire protection services. If BFD#1 is merged with BFD#2, nothing will change except your taxes will increase by 0.3897 to pay for BFD#2 pension liability.

Obituaries Barbara Jean Edstrom, 90 Barbara Jean Edstrom, of Villa Park, departed to be in the glory of the Lord on Jan. 17 while staying with daughter Donna Jean Mikal in Valley Center, Calif., for cancer treatments at the University of San Diego Cancer Hospital. She was 90 Barbara Jean McKnight was born in Elmhurst on June 9, 1930 to Custer and Frieda (Bauer) McKnight the oldest of three children. She grew up during the depression and World War II and was raised in a God-fearing Christian home. She attended Glenbard High School in Glen Ellyn for her first two years and then the family moved to Bellwood, where she graduated from Proviso High School in Maywood in 1948.

She then worked for Scripture Press Publications in Chicago until her marriage to Robert “Bob” “Whitey” Edstrom on July 26, 1952.

They had two daughters, Donna Jean Marie and Roberta Lynn. When the empty nest approached, she was hired for customer service by several law firms due to her outgoing and sociable personality. She retired in 1992 from Thatcher Oaks Awnings in Elmhurst and traveled with her husband to many World War II U.S. Navy reunions all over the United States. She was an active member of Grace Bible Church in Elmhurst.

She loved singing and became an active singer with the traveling ladies choir, the Golden Lights, for many years.

In 2010, she became reacquainted with a High School sweetheart Cyler Wenberg. They were married in 2011 and moved to Coos Bay, Ore. In 2012, Cy passed away. Barb moved back to her home in Villa Park with her daughter Roberta Lynn McClain and family.

Never one to complain about her circumstances, Barbara remained positive and sociable always. She had countless friends, many of her closest friends she considered her extended family, and she was the example of a faithful prayer warrior to the end. A true matriarch, she will be remembered for loving the Lord and for her strong example of belief and faith in the Lord to her family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob Edstrom, brother Paul McKnight, husband Cy Wenberg, daughter Roberta Lynn (Edstrom) McClain, son-in-law Randall (Randy) McClain and two great grandchildren.

Barbara is survived by daughter Donna Jean (John) Mikal, Sister Donna (Bob) Rice; 10 grandchildren, Luke (Jesse) McClain, Kaitlin (Matt) Rasband, Larissa (Tim) Lawless, Emma McClain, John (Darcy) Mikal, Sarah (Jason) Poole, Tim (Amy) Mikal, Anna (Marshall) Ferrell, Philip Mikal, Lydia Mikal; and 15 great grandchildren, Wyatt, Jase, Rhett, Lannah, Jane, Jonas, Grayson, Hailey, Stephanie, Kevin, Raymond, Matthew, Jaxon, and Jace.

Philip Asselborn, 77 Philip Asselborn, of Elmhurst, passed peacefully March 19, 2021 at the age of 77. Phil will be remembered for his charismatic and fun-loving personality and was well-loved by everyone he knew. Phil was born on July 29 in Chicago and grew up in Cicero.

Phil served in the Navy where he retrieved the Aurora 7 space capsule after it splashed down in the Atlantic in 1962. Phil married Patricia Scilingo in 1965 and they had two daughters, Gina and Karen. Phil worked as a licensed electrician and ultimately owned his own contracting business, P&A Electric.

Phil went back to school and earned a AAS degree from College of DuPage in 1985. Over the years, Phil was actively involved in many Elmhurst community groups such as the Elmhurst Jaycees, The Elmhurst Lions Club, Elmhurst Community Theater and Visitation Parish. Phil played the drums and Elmhurst locals may remember the nightclubs he directed at the annual Visitation “Far From Broadway” fundraisers.

His shows included Hernando’s Hideaway, Phil’s Generic, the Electric Lounge, and the Kamikaze Club. Phil enjoyed playing tennis, bowling on a league, live music, taking his old 1978 boat to the Chain O’Lakes, and most of all, socializing and having laughs with people.

Phil is survived by his two children Gina O’Leary (Mike) and Karen Newkirk (Dave), and former wife of 27 years, Patricia Scilingo. Phil is the cherished grandpa of Brian and Dan O’Leary, and Nicole and Natalie Newkirk.

Phil was born to Anthony and Helen Asselborn of Cicero and was brother to Carol (Bob) Lorek, Arlene (Ed) Kauzlarich, Dennis (Cathy) Asselborn, and Diane (Larry) Pignato. The family memorial and celebration of life will be private.

Phil will be dearly missed by many, and his friends and family will always remember him with a laugh and a smile. Arrangements provided by the family.

Charles (Chuck) Huber, 88 Charles (Chuck) Huber died on March 22, 2021 at the age of 88, after suffering from heart failure.

He spent the last two weeks of his life surrounded by his children playing cards, watching basketball, reminiscing and, in true Huber fashion, sharing more laughter than tears.

Chuck was born in La Crosse, Wisc., on May 11, 1932 to Harry

and Mina (Nash) Huber. It was there that he met his future wife Eleanor (Ellie) Lehmann. Although they met in kindergarten, they did not start “going steady” until their sophomore year in high school and didn’t get married until 1954 after each had graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Chuck graduated with a BBA and accounting degree.

After a brief service in the army, he returned to UW-Madison to attend law school. Chuck accepted a job as a tax attorney at McDermott, Will and Emery in Chicago. He and Ellie soon moved to Elmhurst to begin raising their family of four adored children.

Chuck had a zest for life matched by few others. He and Ellie began traveling with their not always wellbehaved young children in a nonair-conditioned station wagon in the 1960’s with a mission to see every beautiful national park and tourist trap in the United States. Their travels continued far beyond after Chuck retired. For many years, they traveled the world learning of new places and cultures and taking in the sites. They were fortunate enough to take many of their retirement trips with friends they had made along the years, most of them from their connections they made at Immanuel Lutheran School and Church.

Chuck was blessed with great

friendships throughout his years.

He set out to travel the west coast the summer after senior year in high school with his four best buddies, referred to as the Jolly Morticians “because they undertook anything.”

He made life-long connections with college friends who became part of the family. After moving to Elmhurst, Chuck and Ellie very quickly met up with cherished friends they met through Immanuel.

This is where true shenanigans began. Chuck and Ellie’s group of friends were quite the pranksters.

Chuck may have been the biggest prankster of them all. Any flimsy excuse would suffice for their crazy group to throw a party.

Chuck’s life was enriched by his love of gardening, bridge, woodworking, writing and watching his beloved Badger football games.

However, his biggest joy in life was his wife and his children. He and his loving wife Ellie showed his family what a successful marriage looks like and taught them the importance of family. Both are given equal credit as Chuck and Ellie were always a team. When Chuck and Ellie turned 40, they decided to take up skiing and they became ‘a family who skis’, taking annual trips that continued long after the first grandchild was born. These are some of the most cherished memories for the family. As Chuck

and Ellie’s family grew in size, “Huberfest” was born-a summer gathering of the children and their spouses, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. It continues to be a weekend filled with food, beverages, a cornhole tournament, four square, swimming, cards and an overabundance of laughter. Laughter seems to be what the Huber family does best. Chuck had a quick wit and a keen sense of humor – a gift to all who knew him. He will forever be missed by his family and friends.

Chuck is survived by his childrenKathy (Wayne) Kubick, Dave (Carol) Huber, Tina (John) Ughetta and Anne (Scott) Martenson, his six grandchildren-Colin and Erika Kubick, Connor and Andrew Ughetta and Rachel and Erik Martenson and his two greatgrandchildren, Charlotte and Logan Kubick.

A private celebration of life will be held in his honor in late August at Huberfest, somewhere between the cornhole tournament and a feisty foursquare game. He and Ellie’s beautiful ‘handmade by Chuck’ cremation boxes will then be buried under the canopy of a beautiful tri color beech tree that he planted in Ellie’s honor when she passed away in 2016.

Hearing Research Foundation awards Birtman Grant to Krizman

The American Hearing Research Foundation, headquartered in Elmhurst, announced that it has awarded its Birtman Grant, a single grant of $75,000, to Northwestern University researcher Jennifer Krizman, Ph.D. This is the first time in more than 17 years that AHRF has offered this prestigious award for exceptional scientific investigation, along with its annual grant funding awards.

“We’re very excited about the studies we’re supporting this year,” noted Research Committee Chair and AHRF Director Donna Whitlon. “Krizman’s study in particular taps into hearing and comprehension issues that affect our diverse population.”

Krizman’s study will look for separate and shared mechanisms that enable a listener to recognize and understand speech with environmental noise and non-native talking.

Study participants will include middle-aged listeners with and without hearing loss.

“We’re good at listening in quiet, pristine conditions. It’s much hard-

er when we’re listening in noise or listening to a non-native speaker,” Krizman said. “The talker’s message is degraded before it even reaches the listener’s ears.”

Accented speech is part of everyday life, whether in neighborhoods or with colleagues working across scientific fields.

There are 378 million people worldwide who speak English as their first language, and 743 million who speak English as their second language.

“We know from prior work that the fundamental frequency or pitch matters with speech in noise,” Krizman added. “It provides a steady cue for a listener to follow through the noise. We’ll look for mechanisms that allow some people to adapt more readily to non-native speakers – for instance, pitch or harmonic discrimination.

As listeners, she notes, “we need to concentrate harder to understand non-native speech, which can lead to a negative experience.” She’d like to help people tailor their listening strategies so accents and noise become less difficult.

DuPage County, IDPH partner on COVID-19 vaccination clinic

DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin and Board of Health President Sam Tornatore welcomed U.S. Reps. Sean Casten, Bill Foster, and Lauren Underwood to the opening of the DuPage County Community Vaccination Clinic in February at the DuPage County Fairgrounds.

The DuPage County Health Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health partnered to expand the operations of the County’s COVID-19 Community Vaccination

Clinic in March, which allowed for increased hours of operation and vaccinating residents at a quicker pace.

The County also expanded COVID-19 vaccine appointments to people eligible in Phase 1B+, including persons 16 to 64 years old with comorbidities and underlying conditions, as well as individuals with disabilities. The clinic operates by appointment only from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8

a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

The clinic will continue to be operated and staffed by Health Department employees and volunteers, while the state will provide the vaccine supply necessary. With the additional vaccines, the clinic will have the ability to operate at capacity and administer more than 1,000 vaccines per day. Vaccinations will continue to be available by appointment only. Elmhurst piano teacher embodies the spirit of National Piano Day Instructor finds students prefer lessons via Zoom

On Monday, March 29, the 88th day of the year, many in our nation celebrate National Piano Day to honor the musicians who use the 88 keys on the piano to bring music to the world.

Locally, Lillian DeBartolo, a resident of Park Place of Elmhurst, typifies the creativity, resilience and passion of piano teachers who keep the music alive under any circumstances.

After a lifetime of teaching piano to young people, DeBartolo wasn’t going to let the global pandemic stop her from teaching; she just had to get more creative.

In March of 2020, safety precau-

tions and social distancing guideline prohibited in-person piano lessons, which DeBartolo conducted in her apartment at Park Place of Elmhurst.

Knowing the importance for her students to continue their lessons, she wanted to ensure they did not lose any ground they’d gained. With the help of Park Place staff, DeBartolo learned how to use Zoom to teach lessons. It didn’t take long before she was teaching her students without any staff assistance.

In recent weeks, DeBartolo and her fellow residents at Park Place of Elmhurst are now fully vaccinated, making it possible for students to return to in-person lessons.

DeBartolo has educated hundreds of piano students of all ages, from kindergarten through high school and adults.

Teaching has been a rewarding job when she was a young girl.

“I had two brothers. One played for DeBartolo.

“Sometimes I can’t believe I am the guitar, and the other played the getting paid to teach students how to play the piano,” she said. “It’s just such a joy.”

As time went on, DeBartolo reduced her class size, but she didn’t want to give up teaching entirely.

After her move to Park Place, Lillian was thrilled to learn that she’d still be able to offer piano lessons right in her apartment.

On Tuesday, March 30, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth announced that Felony Theft charges had been filed against a former employee of Elmhurst Hospital accused of stealing more than $218,000 from the hospital cafeteria.

Todd Jagow, 43, of Woodridge, appeared at a bond reduction hearing where Judge Brian Telander set bond at $10,000 bond with 10% to apply.

On March 16, 2021, a $250,000 arrest warrant was issued for Jagow.

At a recent hearing, the State argued for a $250,000 with 10% to apply bond in accordance with the previously issued arrest warrant.

Following the hearing, which was held via Zoom, Jagow turned himself in at the Elmhurst Police station, posted $1,000, the necessary 10% of his bond, and was released from custody.

He has been charged with two counts of Theft in Excess of $100,000, a Class 1 Felony punishable by up to 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Jagow was a supervisor of the cafeteria of Elmhurst Hospital. It is alleged that Jagow stole money that totaled approximately $218,630 from that cafeteria by entering fictitious mobile money identifier (MMID) refunds of money in the amount that he stole so that the cash registers would balance.

It is alleged that the theft took place between February 13, 2018 and January 20, 2020. It is alleged that Jagow used the money to pay personal expenses.

Jagow’s alleged scheme was uncovered when authorities conducted a review of cafeteria sales. An investigation conducted by the Elmhurst Police Department and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, with assistance from hospital authorities, resulted in the charges.

“It is alleged that Mr. Jagow treated the coffers at Elmhurst Hospital as his own personal piggy bank, skimming money as he needed,” Berlin said. “His alleged scheme came to an end however, when authorities at the hospital grew suspicious of his actions and contacted the Elmhurst Police Department who conducted a thorough investigation. I commend the Elmhurst Police Department, particularly Detective Dan Torza, for their diligence in unraveling Mr. Jagow’s alleged scheme. I would like to thank authorities at Elmhurst Hospital for their assistance and cooperation throughout the entire investigation.”

Jagow’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 20, 2021, for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

State releases guide to school reopening Districts to receive over $7 billion in federal funds to help in effort

Educators, students and families will face a host of new challenges in overcoming the learning loss that occurred over the past year of mostly remote learning as COVID-19 vaccines become more widely available and schools prepare to fully reopen for

in-person learning.

To aid in that process, Gov. JB Pritzker announced the release of a new 180-page Learning Renewal Resource Guide to help school officials identify and address the most significant challenges they face.

Over the past decade, distracted driving has become one of the leading causes of crashes on our roads.

Texting while driving distracts a driver visually, manually, and cognitively. Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes off of the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent of driving blind at 55 miles per hour for the length of an entire football field. Motorists can expect to see increased patrols and enforcement zones across Illinois throughout the month, and Elmhurst

police will be citing drivers who are texting or using cellphones while on the road.

Follow these steps for a safe driving experience: • If you are expecting a text message or need to send one, pull over and park your car in a safe location.

Once you are off the road and parked, it is safe to text.

• Designate your passenger as your “designated texter.” Allow them access to your phone to respond to calls or messages.

• Do not engage in social media scrolling or messaging while driving.

Cellphone use can be habit-forming.

• Put your cellphone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat until you arrive at your destination.

In addition, higher education institutions in Illinois will receive about $1.3 billion from the third round of federal relief that was approved in December, for a total of $2.5 billion across all three rounds of federal funding, mainly from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund.

“With these enormous new resources comes the great challenge that most districts have never had to face—how to avoid having the last 12 months become the lost year for our students,” Pritzker said at a news conference at South Elgin High School in the western Chicago suburbs, the state’s second-largest school district. “To revitalize learning for teachers and students and educators, our response must be intensive, holistic and practical.”

The resource guide is the work of the Illinois P-20 Council, an agency established in 2009 to study and make recommendations for all levels of education, from preschool through post-college education. The guide was developed in collaboration with the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Illinois Community College Board, the Illinois Student Assistance Commission and the Governor’s Office of Early Childhood Development, with

support from A Better Chicago and Advance Illinois.

Just as the pandemic exacerbated inequities that already existed within the nation’s health care system, State Superintendent of Education Carmen Ayala said it also had a disproportionate impact on low-income students, who often have limited or no access to home computers or broadband internet service, as well as students of color.

But she also said that as schools reopen post-pandemic, they will have a new set of resources to help address those underlying inequities.

“With the influx of federal funding and the learning renewal resource guide, we are now presented with a unique opportunity to transform systems of learning for students, to reshape our new normal, so that our students return to an education system that is more equitable, more individualized and more responsive to their needs,” she said.

Melissa Figueira, senior policy associate with Advance Illinois, said it has also had a dramatic impact on enrollment at all levels of education—an estimated 1.9 percent drop in pre-K through 12 schools, with the biggest declines in kindergarten through third grade, and a 5 percent decline in post-secondary enrollment.

The resource guide details 12 topics that districts and higher education institutions may want to consider to equitably address the pandemic’s shortterm and long-term impacts.

Among them are ways to support enrollment and retention, redesigning the school calendar by expanding school days and the school year, ways to provide out of classroom learning experiences through tutoring, before and after school programs and summer camps, and enhancing the availability of both academic and behavioral counseling.

In addition to the resource guide, the governor’s office said in a statement that state education agencies will focus on four major goals to support schools: high-impact tutoring; social and emotional learning community partnerships; interim assessments to measure the impact the pandemic has had on student learning; and to encourage enrollment in both early childhood programs and higher education.

DuPage County ranks ‘Healthiest in Illinois’

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) is pleased to announce that DuPage County has been ranked the healthiest county in Illinois, according to the 2021 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps. The county rankings, produced annually by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, are an easy-to-use snapshot that compares counties within states, demonstrating that where you live influences how well and how long you live.

“This designation truly highlights the incredible work of our local health department, healthcare systems, community groups, organizations, and residents to continue improving the health and well-being for all of us here in DuPage County,” said DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin.

The rankings use more than 30 measures to help communities understand how healthy their residents are today (Health Outcomes) and what will impact their health in the future (Health Factors), which are used to measure the current overall health of each county in all 50 states.

While DuPage County has ranked in the top five in both categories for several years, this year the county was ranked Number 1 in both Health Factors and Health Outcomes among the 102 counties in Illinois.

“This year’s rankings show us what we can accomplish when we come together to build a healthy community for our residents,” said Karen Ayala, Executive Director of DuPage County Health Department. “We will continue our work to further improve the health of our communities, recognizing that not all residents enjoy the same access or outcomes. This is particularly important as we face the challenges further revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

New data tracker shows decline in small business as lawsuits proceed Hospitality businesses experienced largest decrease

Hospitality jobs in Illinois have declined nearly 52 percent since the pandemic began, according to new data, as lawsuits continue against the governor’s orders to close nonessential businesses.

While leisure and hospitality jobs were hit the hardest, the number of small businesses open in Illinois overall has fallen by about 36.5 percent, as of March 20, compared to last January, based on data compiled by Opportunity Insights, a nonprofit group at Harvard University.

Opportunity Insights’ data shows a significant number of closures fol-

lowing the governor’s stay-at-home order which took effect in March and continued to the end of May. The percentage of small business closures in Illinois was about 5 percent in early March 2020, and reached more than 42 percent on March 29, according to the data.

The decline in Illinois’ small businesses is similar to the national trend for the same time period. Nationally, the number of small businesses decreased by about 34 percent, with about a 51 percent decline in leisure and hospitality jobs, according to the data.

The data is based on small business transactions and revenues from Wom-

ply, “a company that aggregates data from several credit card processors to provide analytical insights to small businesses and other clients,” according to the study.

The data also shows that small business revenue overall in Illinois fell by nearly 28 percent from January 2020 to March 20. The amount of total revenue from hospitality and leisure businesses specifically saw a 57.9 percent decrease in that time period.

Nationwide, small businesses overall experienced a 24 percent decrease in revenues, with revenues for leisure and hospitality businesses falling roughly 53.4 percent from January 2020 to March 20.

As the first COVID-19 cases were reported last March, Gov. JB Pritzker issued his first stay at home order March 20, ordering nonessential businesses—like restaurants and some retail stores—to close. The order was extended through the end of May, with some restrictions on in-person dining

in bars and restaurants lifted in June.

In mid-May, a group of individuals and businesses—including a car repair shop, restaurant and pet groomer— sued Pritzker in federal district court in Chicago. They argued Pritzker’s executive orders violated the ‘takings’ clause of the 5th Amendment, and violated their rights to due process.

The takings clause states the government is prohibited from taking private property for public use, without just compensation.

Based on these claims, they asked the court to award them monetary damages for lost revenue and profits.

Recently, a federal judge dismissed the case. Judge Franklin U. Valderrama found the businesses’ claims were barred by the 11th Amendment, which provides general immunity to states from lawsuits by individuals.

Because state officials, like Pritzker, who are sued in their official capacities are considered the “state,” Valderrama ruled that Pritzker is protected from

the lawsuit’s claims under the 11th Amendment.

A separate group of lawsuits were filed by restaurants and bars that were forced to close following Pritzker’s reinstatement of the indoor dining ban in November. The businesses argued that Pritzker lacked the authority under the state law to impose an order forcing restaurants to close indoor dining.

One Kane County restaurant, FoxFire, has continued to pursue its lawsuit in Sangamon County court, and even appealed to the Illinois Supreme Court, which has not accepted the case.

Lawyers for FoxFire, which has remained open to indoor service despite the order, have asked the governor to produce discovery, or evidence, to support his ban on indoor dining.

The governor’s lawyers have filed a motion to dismiss to FoxFire’s lawsuit.

A judge in Sangamon County heard arguments March 30 on that motion. The judge said she expects to issue a ruling in that case within two weeks.

Your Hometown Newspaper There is nothing like the freedom of fresh-air shoes. I own more sandals than regular jail-shoes and I’m not embarrassed to admit it.

They may not provide arch support or protection from the elements, but they are fun. They come in all sorts of impractical colors like pink, orange and lime green. They flip and flop and sometimes have that little thingy that goes between your toes. What they lack in comfort and sensibility they make up for in style, style, style.

My toes are always the first to come and the last to go.

As the seasons change, and the weather warms in the spring, I can’t wait to get rid of my real shoes in exchange for sandals. Weeks before the warm weather actually arrives, I polish my toes in anticipation of the big event.

The opposite occurs in the fall. I wait until the very last minute, when the winds are chilly and frost-heavy leaves cover the ground. It is only then — when snow is imminent and Mother Nature snuffs out any inkling of summer — that I pull socks out of the drawer and put on shoes that will house my toes and keep them jailed for the long winter. I always do so with great remorse.

Toes aren’t meant to be kept inside, locked up. They get sweaty.

They get cramped. Shoes that house toes cause all sorts of ugly things like corns, athlete’s foot, toe jam and blisters. Blisters hurt.

But for most of us, jailing our toes during the winter months is inevitable. The temperature dips, our toes get cold and we are practical people. Cold toes can cause the shivers, cracked skin and even frostbite. Nobody likes frostbite, so we pack ’em up and put ’em in.

And there they sit — quiet, cramped and sweating — in the dark, waiting for spring.

Businessman Gary Rabine on March 30 announced he will seek the Republican nomination for governor in 2022, becoming the third candidate to officially enter the field.

The suburban entrepreneur held a pair of kickoff events in Schaumburg and Woodstock on March 30, lobbing criticisms at incumbent Gov. JB Pritzker over the state’s property taxes and pandemic-related business closures.

The 57-year-old businessman is the owner and founder of Rabine Group, a national exterior services company specializing in commercial paving projects.

Rabine is also an advisory board member and donor for Turning Point USA, a conservative non-profit aimed at promoting conservative principles on college campuses across the country, as well as an active member of the Young Presidents’ Organization and the Republican Governors Association.

The announcement touted his entrepreneurial experience, saying that he would bring a business-centric approach to create jobs and “let the private sector thrive”.

“We will lift up businesses and help develop the safest practices,” Rabine said. “We will treat our small

businesses and the millions of jobs they create as the valued customers they all are to us.”

Rabine said that he would assemble a team of “the best economic minds” to establish an Illinois recovery plan with the goal of creating “50,000 jobs or more” per year by 2024. A reversal of what he says is an exodus of businesses and residents.

Although property taxes are set by local units of government, Rabine said he would aim to cut property taxes by at least 50 percent by 2024 as part of his campaign platform.

“We don’t need to be the lowest taxes in the country, we just need to be competitive,” Rabine said.

Rabine said that Pritzker, who he called a “California trust fund billionaire,” bought the governorship and closed thousands of businesses with his COVID-19 executive orders.

When asked by the Chicago Tribune whether he accepted the results of the 2020 presidential election, Rabine told the paper, “I’m not smart enough to understand what was the end result, whether it was stolen or not, and I would never say that.”

His comment drew backlash from the national Democratic Governors Association and the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association

IC Catholic Prep football team steamrolls St. Edward York football loses to Hinsdale Central

The IC Catholic Prep football team left little doubt in its Week 3 game at Elgin St. Edward. The Knights moved to 2-1 on the season after a 55-6 victory over the hosts.

IC Catholic Prep ran the ball just 15 times in the game, but gained 215 yards (14.3 yards per carry). Senior

Kyle Franklin had 11 carries for 151 yards and scored four touchdowns.

Freshman Dennis Mandala and sophomore Malik Gray each added a rushing touchdown.

Sophomore Denzell Gibson caught three passes for 33 yards and two touchdowns, while freshman KJ Parker had four catches for 55 yards.

Senior Chauncey Lee had one catch for 24 yards.

IC Catholic Prep needed to make only 44 tackles on defense. Sophomore Jesse Smith led the way with

seven. Junior Joe Marzano had six tackles, while senior Will Cooke had five tackles.

Through three games, Franklin has run the ball 58 times for 428 yards and six touchdowns. He’s averaging 7.4 yards per carry and 142.7 rushing yards per game. Lee leads the team with six catches for 118 yards in three games.

IC Catholic Prep heads to Wheaton Academy Friday for its Week 4 matchup before finishing off the abbreviated season with games against

Bishop McNamara (Friday, April 16 at home) and Riverside-Brookfield (Friday, April 23 in Riverside). There are no state playoffs this season due to the pandemic.

Patrick Kastner ran the ball 21 times for 83 yards to lead the York offense.

Michael Bojesen ran 10 times for 20 yards. He also completed 10 passes for 74 yards.

Sami Ayash caught six passes 67 yards. Aaron Berman caught 2 passes for 14 yards, while Kastner had one catch for 5 yards and Frederick Levins caught two passes.

York boys soccer coach Jordan Stopka said the goals for his team the remainder of this COVID-19-truncated season revolve around letting action on the field speak for itself.

“To continue making statements through our results and style of play,” the coach said, listing off those goals.

“To turn heads for the rest of the season. ‘Why not us?’”

The Dukes certainly turned heads to start the season, going 2-0-1 in their first three games. York defeated Hinsdale Central 3-1 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division play, tied perennial power Morton 2-2 and downed Willowbrook 6-0.

Kevin Gliatis had four goals in the team’s first three games, while Yael Silvestre had two goals. Jose Herrera had four assists to start the season,

while goalies Mario Aguilar Garcia and Ricky Torres had a combined 1.00 goals-against average in those three contests.

Stopka said the team’s win against Hinsdale Central opened some specific eyes. “We finally started playing the possession style coach Alvarez and I are looking for on a daily basis,” he said. “The second half of that game showed what we are capable of, and it sent the message that we don’t want to win just by playing kick and run. We are going to try and win with passing, possession, combination play and movement off the

ball.”

Stopka said Gliatis has made an impact at the top, “and is dangerous at all times.” Captain and midfielder Sam Musial also has been big for York. “He organizes the middle of the field and sets the standard for our style of play,” Stopka said.

Center backs Anthony Flores and Timur Turkoglu continue to improve as well. “They have stepped up immensely and are the anchor of the team,” Stopka added.

Stopka noted that stalemate against Morton came against a team ranked No. 1 in the preseason by the online

media outlet Chicagoland Soccer.

“I have been the most impressed by the players ability to believe in themselves and not be intimidated by the opposition,” he said. “Two of our first three games came against quality teams. Morton was preseason No. 1 in the city and surrounding suburbs. I also have been impressed with their ability to adapt to different formations and tactics depending on the opponent.”

York returns to action this week with games at Glenbard West and Proviso East (tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Maywood).

Kappen and Wilms were eliminated in the fourth round of the consolation bracket after a 21-16, 21-11 loss to Glenbard East.

Lindsey White won one match in the singles division for York. She opened the tournament with a 216, 21-14 loss to Neuqua Valley, but came back to defeat a player from Lockport 21-17, 21-10 in the first round of the consolation bracket.

White was eliminated after a 21-15, 21-19 loss to a player from Thornton Fractional South.

The York girls badminton team can look back at the unique 2020-2021 season and know it was involved in a first.

The Dukes, whose season was moved to the winter timeframe due to the COVID-19 pandemic, also were part of the first sport to have a state tournament reinstated by the IHSA during the pandemic.

And York made the most of it.

The Dukes finished tied for 14th in the state as a team with Waubonsie Valley, Buffalo Grove and Glenbard East at the recent state finals tournament that was moved to Hinsdale South High School in Darien.

York girls gymnastics team finishes third in conference Shockey, Miklyukh earn all-WSC Silver accolades

The COVID-19-abreviated season still contained plenty of highlights for the York girls gymnastics team.

The Dukes finished third in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division. York was 1-3 in dual meets.

York recorded a season-high team score of 133.2. Individually, Maryalice Shockey scored a team-high 35

in the all-around competition, while Martha Miklyukh’s season-high in the all-around was a 32.

Both Shockey and Miklyukh earned all-WSC Silver honors and were anointed academic all-conference.

Coach Nick Criel said consistency was a big key for the Dukes. “Our routines and skills were very consistent this year,” he explained. “We saved a lot of points by staying on the beam. We also had very consistent floor scores that we were very happy with.”

Criel added the Dukes stepped it up when it counted the most. “What

impressed me the most was their ability to perform under pressure,” he said.

In addition to Shockey and Miklyukh, Criel cited strong progress this year from senior Allison Blessing, freshman Daniella Sanchez and Hannah Aubrey.

Criel noted Blessing returned to the sport after taking her junior year off to compete with the York competitive cheerleading team. “Allison stepped up in the conference meet and filled in for Danielle Chavez, who was out with an injury,” he said.

He taught Spanish and one math class at St. Pat’s. “My philosophy is I am more of a players’ coach,” he said.

“I have been a big Liverpool soccer supporter ever since 2015 when Jurgen Klopp came over and he’s known as a players’ coach. He’s kind of my coaching idol. I want to related to the players and form bonds with them.

I am more light-hearted and smiling. I like to have fun and joke with the kids. The goal is understanding where each player can be successful and the provide the best way possible to convey the knowledge they need at the position they play. I am not big

Mobile food distribution reaches York Township families On Wednesday, March 17, York Township partnered with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to distribute 11,000 pounds of food to families in need from the Township parking lot at 1502 S. Meyers Road in Lombard.

The event was a huge success, serving 200 families in just over an hour with the help of more than 30 volunteers and staff members including York Township Supervisor John W. Chicago woman charged with 6th DUI, which is felony On Monday, March 29, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Robert Marshall announced that bond was set April 3 for a Chicago woman accused of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol – Sixth Offense, a Class X Felony. Wanda Richardson, 52, of Chicago, appeared in Bond Court where Judge Michael Fleming set bond at $100,000 with 10% to apply. The State had asked for a bond of $250,000 with 10% to apply. In addition to the DUI Charge, Richardson has also been charged with one count of Driving While License Revoked, a Class 4 Felony and several Misdemeanor traffic offenses.

Richardson is currently on parole for a 2015 Aggravated DUI. On Friday, March 26, at approximately 6:56 p.m., officers with the Naperville Police Department observed a vehicle, allegedly driven

by Richardson, attempt to make an illegal U-turn at the intersection of Bond Street and Diehl Road where there is a sign that indicates no U-turn allowed. Additionally, as the vehicle was on the roadway, the driver was allegedly observed pulling her seatbelt from the rested position and across her body in an attempt to buckle the unbuckled seat belt. Based upon the above observations, a traffic stop was initiated on the vehicle.

driver, officers observed that the driver allegedly had bloodshot and glassy eyes, slow and slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol coming from her person. Officers initiated field sobriety tests after which Richardson was taken into custody. A search of Richardson’s vehicle allegedly yielded an open 200 ml bottle of vodka in the front passenger seat approximately twothirds empty.

“It is alleged that after multiple DUI convictions and while on parole for a DUI, Wanda Richardson once again, thumbed her nose at the law and put the public at risk for a sixth time when she got behind the wheel of a car last weekend,” Berlin said.

“Her alleged actions show a complete contempt for the rule of law and consequently, she is now looking at a possible prison term of up to thirty years behind bars if convicted. People have got to understand that driving is a privilege, not a right and with ride-sharing services at your fingertips, there is no reason whatsoever that anyone should get behind the wheel of a car if they have been drinking.”

Richardson’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 19, in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.
