Alex King, longtime local businessman, passes away at 78

If the weather in the area seemed dreary last week, it is likely because the world was made a little sadder after losing one of the bright shining stars of the local business world, as well as in the communities of Elmhurst and Villa Park.

Alex Richard King Jr. passed away March 29, 2022 at the age of 78. He was born on April 10, 1943 in Melrose Park, the son of the late Alex Richard King Sr. and Geraldine (nee Speno) King.

He was the beloved husband of 59 years to Karen (nee Vander Molen) King and the loving father of Kari (Tom) Duffy, Richard King and Robert (Robin) King.

Perhaps his favorite role in the family was as the loving and cherished “Papu” to his grandchildren Brianna, AJ, Paige, Alyssa, Paulie and Jake.

Alex was the dear brother of Deni (Dan) Fiock and Jill (Brian) Brunette; fond uncle of Spencer (Samantha) Fiock and Nick Fiock, and Kiel Brunette and Kory Brunette; and by many more family members as well as friends, tenants and business associates too numerous to count.

Alex was a real estate broker and founding partner of Stenzel, Polster and King Real Estate in Franklin Park. He began his business in 1972 and in 1976, King Construction, Inc., was incorporated as a builder of multi-family dwellings. It was located in the building that still remains at

Barnitz first Elmhurst gymnast to qualify for nationals

Renny Barnitz (pictured here, left) took first place on floor exercise at men’s regional gymnastics competition in Dayton, Ohio, on April 1. He qualified for the national competition with an all-around score of 69.05. He is the first gymnast from the Elmhurst gymnastics center to take first place in a regional competition and the first gymnast to qualify for the national competition. Renny has been on the Elmhurst gymnastics team since 2010. His coach is Nikko Winstead (right) and has been his coach since he started at age 5. The national competition will take place in Arizona in May.

In a letter to the editor published in last week’s Independent, a Bensenville school district was referred to as District 22. It should have been Bensenville District 2. The Independent apologizes for the error.

Late Monday evening, the Independent received the news that a father and daughter from Elmhurst had been struck by lightning in Tampa, Fla., after watching the New York Yankees play a game during spring training. Both survived with minor injuries.

According to reports from NXST-TV and Chicago’s WGN Channel 9, John Moberg and his 19-year-old daughter Ashley were Yankee fans and traveled to Tampa to watch them during spring training.

Saturday’s game was called early due to the weather and fans including the Mobergs returned to their cars parked outside Steinbrenner Field.

It was then, Ashley told reporters, she saw “a big bright flash, heard a loud boom and her ears began ringing.”

“I saw my dad flying in the air, smacking his head on the ground and I am flying through the air,” Ashley said.

“I actually got blasted out of my shoes and landed on the pavement. For about ten seconds, I thought my dad was dead and I thought I was dying.”

Her father was knocked unconscious.

“I didn’t know lightning had hit me,” John told reporters. “I just woke up with my face in the mud and I couldn’t move. I was 100% paralyzed. I thought I had a stroke but with some time, I was able to roll over and talk to Ashley and she let me know that we got hit by lightning.”

A witness to the incident called 9-1-1 and stayed with the Mobergs until the ambulance arrived.

The Mobergs were taken to Tampa General Hospital following the incident and were discharged Monday just in time to catch their flight home.

Prior to their flight, the father and daughter had a chance to return to the scene of where they had been struck and had their photo taken as a memory. The two had nothing but nice things to say about all the people in Tampa who helped them out.

“We are alive, we are happy,” said John. “Thank you to all of Tampa, the paramedics, the police, the Yankee administration and the hospital… five stars all the way!”

Bensenville Park District considers sale of White Pines property Area near O’Hare sought by redevelopers

According to a story reported by the Daily Herald last week, developers may have their eyes on the White Pines Golf Club property located at 500 W. Jefferson St. in Bensenville.

The club’s 260 acres is bordered

by Church Road on the west, York Road on the east, Jefferson Street on its north side and south to Belmont Avenue, and dates back to 1928.

As the only public course in the area, it has been a popular place to host weddings, golf outings and charity events for organizations throughout DuPage County.

Joseph Vallez, executive director of the Bensenville Park District, said village officials had been occasionally receiving inquiries from developers about the large tract of land for about the past five years, according to the Daily Herald. It was also reported that while no offers have been solicited, the Park District is considering the discussion of a sale.

Last August, state lawmakers

granted the park district the authority to sell up to 125 acres of the property. Vallez told the Daily Herald that hypothetically, the park district could sell that 125 acres and turn the remaining 135 acres into a “new state-of-the-art recreation facility, be it a soccer facility, baseball, a combination of both, potentially a new golf course.”

“With that remaining land, there’s definitely going to be a continued public use with a new recreation facility, if the park district decides to go down that path,” Vallez said, insisting nothing had been decided as yet. Still, proceeds from such a sale could be used to fund facility upgrades and repairs throughout the park district.

Plans are already being considered, according to the Park District web site, where the Bensenville Park District Board of Commissioners have a statement indicating they have indeed received several inquiries from private companies interested in redeveloping parts of the White Pines property.

Some ideas under consideration have been laid out in a plan dubbed “Bensenville 2.0,” which can be found at bvilleparks.org.

A statement on the web site explains: “The project is still in an

exploratory phase, which includes proposing options for the use of any proceeds generated from the sale … Once thoroughly vetted and approved, the sale of certain White Pines acres would be a significant economic engine that would produce resources to support district-wide indoor and outdoor capital improvement projects and programming. Those projects would improve virtually every aspect of the district’s operations to benefit patrons of all ages.”

A proud neighborhood If any redevelopment in that area were to move forward, perhaps the biggest obstacle would be the residents of the White Pines residential area. The neighbors in that area have often stood united when political circumstances threaten to invade their neighborhood and disrupt their way of life and they are not afraid to be vocal.

The Village of Bensenville already lost some of its neighborhoods to the expansion of O’Hare Airport. In

2021, more than 100 houses were torn down in the Mohawk Terrace subdivision, located north of the village to make way for the construction of industrial spaces close to the airport.

Most of the homes were purchased at a premium, due to the demand for industrial buildings. At that time, Bensenville Village Manager Evan Summers told the Daily Herald that, “It’s a testament of what industrial real estate is going for. These opportunities don’t come up often.”

Elmhurst Choral Union presents ‘Majestic Mozart’ Elmhurst Choral Union (ECU) presents Majestic Mozart on Sunday, April 24, at 3 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst University.

Professional guest soloists Susan Nelson, Melissa Arning, Peter Sovitzky, and Douglas Peters join the Elmhurst Choral Union along with a professional orchestra under the baton of conductor Scott Uddenberg. It will be ECU’s second in-person concert since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. ECU, with the Salt Creek Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Timothy Semanik, will put on a concert that celebrates new beginnings and peace as they perform Mozart’s Coronation Mass and short works from Joseph Haydn and Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo.

Police beat

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Assault, battery March 25 Brian Lezak, 56, of Elmhurst, was charged with aggravated battery in the 400 block of N. Maple at 7:50 p.m. According to police, a reporting officer met with the victim who said that Lezak had tackled him to the ground and taken his cell phone.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass March 28 Blake Talbert, 27, of Crete, was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle in the 500 block of N. West at 2:01 p.m. Officers responded for the report of the suspect who was inside the victim’s vehicle, which was parked unlocked in the driveway. Talbert was located and stated he is homeless and went inside the vehicle to stay warm, according to police.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance March 28 A 53-year-old Lake Villa resident was charged with domestic battery at Elmhurst Hospital at 5:01 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a verbal argument, the suspect grabbed the victim’s phone out of her hand and pulled her hair, causing the victim to fall.

The suspect was located in the hospital parking lot and placed under arrest.

March 27 A 61-year-old Bellwood man was charged with domestic battery in the 400 block of N. York at 12:33 p.m. Police said officers responded after the victim called, stating her boyfriend had punched her in the face following a verbal argument.

Victims in the 400 block of N. Oaklawn reported at 8:36 p.m. that they were shot by an unknown air soft type gun. The four unknown suspects were in a Jeep Wrangler. The first incident happened at Second and Oak. The second happened at Berens Park. An investigation is pending.

March 13-March 24 A victim told police at 7 p.m. that several classmates have been bullying him on an app called Discord between the above dates. The victim’s mother is concerned for her son’s safety while at school. An investigation is pending.

DUI, DUI-drugs, transportation of open alcohol, possession of open alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor March 30 Brenda Calderon, 38 of Chicago, was

March 27 Alexis Cooper, 29, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, speeding and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident subsequent to a single vehicle crash near Church and Grand at 3:02 a.m.

March 26 Patricia Frazier, 63, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop in the 700 block of W. Grand at 1:05 a.m.

Unique Sims, 24, of Chicago, was charged with DUI-drugs, unlawful use of a weapon, no valid driver’s license, no insurance, improper lane usage, and failure to restrain a child.

March 24 Jason Higgenbotham, 43, of Lombard, was charged with aggravated DUI-drugs, driving while license revoked and improper parking on the roadway in the 300 block of W. Commonwealth at 3:23 p.m.

Fleeing, eluding

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported two incidents of fleeing and eluding in which drivers of a vehicle reportedly fled after a traffic stop was conducted.

Harassment, threats March 29 A victim in the 300 block of W. Kimball told police at 7:10 p.m. that she was being threatened by a former boyfriend. A message was left for the suspect to have no further contact with the victim.

March 25 A victim in the 500 block of W. St. Charles stated at 5:53 p.m. that her husband has been sending her threatening text messages. An investigation is pending.

Possession of cannabis in a vehicle According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported two incidents of unlawful possession of cannabis in a vehicle by a driver or a passenger: Ladaiyjah Floyd, 20, of Bellwood, near St. Charles and Poplar at 8:58 p.m.; and Timothy Jefferson, 20, of Chicago, near Commonwealth and Butterfield at 12:47 a.m.

March 29 Nicolaos Kritikos, 48, of Yorkville, as charged with delivery of and unlawful possession of a controlled substance in the 300 block of W. Grand at 10:09 a.m. Offices responded to the business for a report of a controlled substance allegedly located in a vehicle that was brought in for service. Kritikos reportedly arrived on scene a short time later and was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the police station.

March 26 Shawn Hayes, 32, of Gardner, Ill., was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Route 83 at 1:45 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances March 26 Following an accident near Third and Walnut at 5:55 p.m., William Perez, 35, of Round Lake Park, was charged with felony driving while license revoked, damage to state property, improper lane usage and failure to notify police of an accident.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery March 30 Brianna Espino, 33, of Evanston, was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, DUI-drugs, criminal trespass to building, speeding and improper lane usage at a business in the 400 block of N. York at 7:06 a.m.

Police said a reporting officer met with the complainant who reported Espino had made entry to the business through a front window.

After being confronted by the complainant, Espino allegedly fled the scene in a van which was determined to be reportedly stolen.

March 29 A victim in the 100 block of S. Prospect told police at 8:34 p.m. that on the above date, while at Elmhurst University she misplaced her wallet. A short time later she received alerts that her debit and credit card were being used.

March 27 Tierra Smith, 23, of Chicago, was charged with burglary and retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at 12:38 p.m.

March 25 Theft was reported in the 1-100 block of Elm Creek Drive at 3:50 p.m. A reporting officer met with the victim who stated he hired a moving company to move his belongings from his apartment. The victim stated he discovered a jacket was missing. The victim further stated he noticed a jacket which was originally worn by a mover was left behind. This case is pending investigation.

Deceptive practice was reported in the 300 block of W. Commonwealth at 3:53 p.m. A victim reported sending gift cards to an unknown suspect after receiving a notification

on his computer.

Nov. 8, 2021-March 23 Theft was reported at a business in the 500 block of W. Lake. A victim reports he placed a company-owned Samsung computer tablet on his desktop on Nov. 8. When the complainant returned to his office on March 23, he was unable to locate the tablet. His office is kept unlocked and all employees and outside service agencies would have had access to the area.

Jan. 16-March 3 Identity theft was reported in the 700 block of S. Parkside. A victim relates that an unknown person(s) purchased a vehicle, opened a T-Mobile account and an AT&T account using his information between the above dates.

March 1 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of E. South at 2:23 p.m. A victim related that he tried to file his income taxes through H&R Block online and was told his return had already been filed. The victim had no other information at this time.

Sept. 17-Oct. 27, 2021 Theft and forgery were reported at a business in the 300 block of N. York. A victim reported that a check was sent through the mail but it never reached the recipient. In October, a fraudulent check was created and cashed via mobile deposit. The check was deposited under the suspect’s name.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is urging the motoring public to focus on the road while driving and to avoid driving distracted. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

“With the increased use of technological devices, distracted driving has become a serious problem on the roads throughout our state and the nation,” said White. “No driver should be texting while driving.”

In an effort to further discourage distracted driving, White has instructed the Secretary of State Police to conduct targeted patrols statewide to crack down on distracted drivers.

“The goal is not to write tickets, but to save lives,” said White. “We are reminding the public of the dangers of distracted driving, and police will be issuing tickets to motorists who are driving distracted.”

Illinois law prohibits the hand-held use of cell phones and electronic devices in vehicles, unless reporting an emergency or while the vehicle is parked. Texting while driving is considered one of the most deadly forms of distracted driving. The penalty for texting while driving results in a moving violation that will be reflected on the motorist’s driving record, in addition to fines and court costs.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving accounted for 15 percent of crashes and claimed the lives of 3,142 motorists in the United States in 2019. The NHTSA has reported that sending or reading a text takes a motorist’s eyes off the road for an average of five seconds. That means when travelling at 55 mph, a motorist is essentially driving blindly for the length of a football field.

Obituaries Elizabeth Rose Hannigan, 77 Elizabeth Rose Hannigan or “Liz” or “Bunny,” 77, of Elmhurst, while surrounded by loving family and friends, lost her courageous battle with lymphoma on Thursday March 10, joining her beloved husband Dick in heaven. She is now at peace but will be missed dearly by those she left behind. Liz was born March 5, 1945 in Oak Park to Francis and Catherine (Schlosser) Hannigan the youngest of six children. She met the love of her life Dick Sachs while working as a secretary at the same company in Oak Park and finally married him after many years together. Many people knew her as Liz, or Lizzy, but on the close family side, she was known only as “Bunny,” a nickname she was

given as a child by her siblings and mother.

Liz liked to stay busy and active, she was always puttering outside of her house, fixing something or tending to the garden. She was an avid bicycle rider, riding her bike around the town of Elmhurst, her favorite mode of transit. Liz was a proud member of AA as she continued her sobriety over 43 years. She was very active in her church, being a member of the Ladies Bible Group and regularly attending service. She was proud to be a child of Christ and felt part of her mission here on earth was to spread the word of the Lord Jesus Christ, through the Bible and its teachings so that we all could share in his love as she did. Liz is survived by three stepchildren, Kim Ricke, Tracey and Thomas Sachs, daughter Krisann Despain, brother Philip Hannigan and two sisters, Jeanette Wood and Mary Kinis; six

Megan O’Malley Setaro, 43 Megan Emily O’Malley Setaro, of Austin, Tex., formerly of Elmhurst, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 21, 2022 at the age of 43.

She was born to Cindy and Jim O’Malley on June 22, 1978.

Megan’s early years were full of family and fun, including sports and fishing with her father. It was also punctuated by the pain of health issues. Even at a young age she wouldn’t let illness define her.

Megan learned the preciousness of life and was determined to live.

Her constant upbeat smile and

attitude were gifts to everyone who knew her. She loved the theatre in middle and high school and would dream of being an actress.

After graduating from York High School, Megan packed her bags and moved to Iowa City to pursue her education and dreams of becoming a teacher. She joined Delta Gamma Sorority where she made lifelong friends. It was at University of Iowa Hospital where Megan received the life-saving gift of her liver transplant on April 20, 1997. This gift provided 25 additional years of life and love and she encouraged everyone she knew to become an organ donor.

After receiving degrees in Education and Finance, she met her future husband James Setaro in 2001 and, in 2006, they married.

She first worked at Northwest Junior High in Iowa City teaching reading. She devoured books and was active in many book clubs.

Moving to Austin in 2007, Megan taught 7th grade at Westridge Middle School. She loved time with children, it was her true calling. She was given a special award by the VFW after years of outstanding essays submitted by her students.

Her son Parker came into the world in 2011, followed by twins, Jack and Madysen, in 2012. Megan lived her dream spending every day with them.

She received her real estate license in 2016 and created her own business selling books, magazines, and collectibles online. She was

proud of buying a book for $1 and selling it online later for $75.

Megan continued teaching at Hill Country Middle School. She was active in churches all her life, most recently at Westlake United Methodist and took part in the Family Foundations group for years.

Megan will be remembered for her joy, her determined spirit, her warmth and kindness. She was a laugh-out-loud, funny girl full of bravery and fire of the best kind. She was always working on something new and exciting. She loved her children with her whole heart and gave them the best gift ever -- her time.

Never conforming to any norm, Megan was truly one of a kind.

Megan is survived by her husband James Setaro; her children, Parker, Madysen, and Jack; her parents, Jim and Cindy O’Malley; her brother Jay (Amber) O’Malley; her nieces Sophia Dehl, Cecelia Dehl, Francesca Dehl, Morgan O’Malley; and nephews, James O’Malley and Ryder Concannon. A memorial service was held on April 2, at Westlake United Methodist Church in Austin.

Cruel to be kind Last weekend I dove headfirst down a deep rabbit hole. And, as those of us with rabbit hole experience can attest, once you hop in there is no going back.

It started innocently enough, as most rabbit hole ventures do.

I recently got a haircut and have decided to embrace my naturally wavy/curly, albeit fine, hair. I have a lot of hair, but its baby-fine texture sometimes makes volume an issue.

Curls require volume, so I hit the Google with “Best shampoo for curly fine hair,” which resulted in numerous websites with lists of the best products for my particular needs.

I clicked on one list and the journey began. I was confronted with various brand names, some I recognized, some I did not. The lists listed numerous facts for each shampoo including scent, ingredient list, price, where to purchase and whether the shampoo was crueltyfree.

Say what? Call me naive (because I am) but I thought the whole animal testing thing was outlawed sometime during the days of eight-track tapes.

Turns out I was wrong.

Sen. Glowiak Hilton releases statement on Prisoner Review Board vote

The Illinois Senate voted against one of the governor’s picks to continue serving on the Prisoner Review Board—due to her approval of granting early prison release for criminals convicted of murdering police officers.

Attributing to her vote against the appointment, state Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) released the following statement: “When police officers lose their lives at the hands of criminals—their families, departments and communities suffer insurmountable, unjustifiable loss.

By releasing these convicted criminals early from prison, our state is setting a dangerous precedent concerning the integrity of the criminal justice system.

“Conscientious individuals must serve on the Illinois Prisoner Review Board, and I urge the governor to choose accredited, diligent appointees.”

Some of the brand names I recognized very well were not considered cruelty free. Yep. They test their products on animals “when required to do so” and can’t promise that those tests aren’t cruel.

You see how this rabbit hole sucked me in? I am a lot of things, but I hope to think that cruel is not one of them. I’d much rather be seen as kind. I think most of us can relate.

I knew I had to find out more so I re-visited my go-to search engine.

Turns out, one particular country (hint: it starts with “Ch”) still requires animal testing on certain products in order for those products to be sold on their soil. Some companies choose not to sell their products in this country; others overlook this little detail in the name of profit, and not only allow animal testing but even pay for it as well.

My mouth was wide open at this point.

I want my high-needs hair to look good, but not at the expense of an innocent bunny rabbit or any of its offspring. I’m also not questioning a company’s need to make a profit.

I get it. But at what cost? That’s a personal question for all of us; I may have my answer, you may have yours—and that’s OK. As my search continued. I learned that another key word when looking for cruelty-free is “vegan.” I like meat as much as anyone, but not in my shampoo or beauty products.

I think my big take-away is that not all products are cruelty-free. Call me innocent, but I thought we were way beyond that. Sigh.

I spent the day reading reviews and ended up ordering a couple of shampoos and conditioners (as well as a curl-activating product) that are all vegan, cruelty-free and (even better) they didn’t break the bank.

My life is again filled with hope, not only for the bunnies of the globe, but my hair as well.

Here’s hoping that any rabbit holes in my future only serve to help bunnies, not hurt them – and that my new products are as kind to my hair as they are to the planet.

Return of congressional town halls would be a sign of healing

By John T. Shaw Several years ago, the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute was invited to join a dozen universities in the United States to promote bipartisan collaboration and productive discourse at the state and local level.

The Institute developed a plan to strengthen how congressional town hall meetings are conducted in Illinois. Our recommendations outlined ways these meetings could be more informative, civil, respectful and productive. We sent our ideas to members of the Illinois congressional delegation and received encouraging responses. Then COVID-19 descended in 2020 and disrupted all our lives. In-person town hall meetings seemed ill-advised and unsafe during a pandemic.

Even if COVID-19 had not battered our world, we were aware that in-person town halls are threatened by other pervasive and pernicious diseases in the United States—the rise in political polarization, the decline of civility, and the atrophy of our collective ability as Americans to discuss contentious issues constructively, without rancor or acrimony.

The twin maladies of COVID-19 and political polarization upended inperson town hall meetings in Illinois and elsewhere.

The institute is not giving up on its conviction that town hall meetings are an important instrument to revive our democracy.

Congressional town hall meetings have been an important feature of

America’s culture of representative democracy for more than two centuries. In their ideal form, they allow lawmakers to describe their work at home and in Washington and to listen to the concerns of their constituents. Open and vigorous dialogue benefits policymakers and the public.

However, the nature of the town hall meeting has changed dramatically in the last decade or so, driven by deepening political polarization and advances in technology, especially the revolution of social media.

Both conservative and liberal activist groups often regard town hall meetings as opportunities to confront lawmakers they oppose and create embarrassing moments that can be captured on camera and then disseminated through social media. Even before COVID-19, many in Congress began to hold only virtual town hall meetings in which constituents attended via phone, internet or Zoom. These meetings are often tightly controlled and often fuel public anger and skepticism about the political process.

Paul Simon powerfully summarized the value of in-person town hall meetings: “It’s one thing to read about the farm problem, much different to talk to flesh-and-blood people whose agony is written on their faces and in what they say,” he wrote. “It’s one thing to know unemployment statistics, another to talk to a mother who is worried about the mental health of her son because he can’t find a job. The people who took time to attend town meetings held in every corner of the state helped me to become a better senator.”

The institute believes that inperson town hall meetings can again become a constructive part of our political discourse. However, we urge lawmakers and the public to approach them differently. Civility must be the coin of the realm. Town hall meetings should be restructured as listening and learning sessions that center on lawmakers hearing the views of constituents. They should be moderated by a nonpartisan community leader who sets the tone for a respectful discussion. The range of people who attend town halls should be widened so the audience is more diverse and includes both partisans and independents.

There is no magic solution to rescue and revive town hall meetings.

Success ultimately depends on the goodwill and respect of both the public and policymakers.

As we approach the spring of 2022, there are cautious reports that the pandemic is easing. Hopefully we can soon contemplate in-person events, albeit with appropriate public health precautions.

I will take it as a good sign about the health of our nation and our democracy when we are able to revive town hall meetings that are both safe and civil. It is important to relearn that we can exchange views with public officials and fellow citizens in a spirited and civil way.

We are all custodians of a remarkable country and state—and citizens of the same political community.

According to Andee Jorgensen, his long-time office manager and all-around right-hand person for 48 years, the business began as King Decorating, a painting contractor, and next door to them in the building was King Travel, operated by Alex’s sister Jill.

“At that time, we were building a lot of homes in Elmhurst as well as Birch Cove, [the apartment building] in Villa Park,” said Jorgensen.

“He also built several townhomes called Nordic Park on Lake Street in Itasca.”

He worked closely with Leo Reedy, partnering on several projects. He was a member of the Real Estate Board and was a real estate broker.

He published a book about Popham Colony, written at the fifthgrade reading level, so that young students could understand about the area he loved so dearly. Alex often spoke to young people in school groups and Scout troops, and very much enjoyed that part of his life that he devoted as a commitment to

Help for kids struggling with gloomy climate news Nature Conservancy offers empowerment roadmap

With health crises, international strife and an onslaught of negative global climate reports, the news can weigh heavily on today’s plugged-in kids. Many feel anxious, alone, helpless and hopeless in the wake of such coverage about the future of planet Earth.

But the state director of The Nature Conservancy in Illinois, which released its own report a year ago

to explore how climate change is affecting the state, believes that while much work is needed to slow the climate crisis, there is hope. And she offers a “roadmap” to help empower young people and ease their stress levels.

“Whether your kids have brought up climate change or not, they’re likely thinking about it,” said Michelle Carr, TNC’s Illinois state di-

On Sunday, April 24 beginning at 7 p.m., Smith will present “Holocaust XR: How New Media is Enabling Memory and Education,” this year’s Holocaust lecture at Elmhurst University.

A theologian by training, he also is the USC Visiting Professor of Religion, where he researches genocide-related testimony. The UNESCO

Chair on Genocide Education, Smith also founded the UK Holocaust Centre in England, and cofounded the Aegis Trust for the prevention of crimes against humanity and genocide.

He has served as a producer on a number of film and new media projects, including Dimensions in Testimony and the VR project The Last Goodbye, an award-winning, virtual-reality film that transports viewers inside the Nazi death camp Majdanek.

The Holocaust Service of Remembrance and Lecture will begin in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge on the campus of Elmhurst University. As the mother of three, Carr says she’s had to overcome her own challenges when speaking to her kids about difficult subjects.

“No one likes being deceived or talked down to, including young people,” she said. “It’s important for adults to say in an open, honest and authentic way, ‘Hey, this is worth discussing, and here’s how we can do it.’ It’s very powerful for parents to witness their kids being passionate.”

Individuals have the power to make a real difference and can help us all reach the 30 by 30 goal of protecting 30 percent of U.S. lands and oceans by 2030. Recycling and cutting single-use plastics are important, but they aren’t enough anymore – today’s youth have taken those steps their entire lives, she said. State Senate approves energy grid reliability task force House discusses lifting ban on new nuclear developments in Illinois

The state Senate recently advanced a measure to create a task force to study electric grid reliability in light of the 2021 passage of the energy regulatory overhaul bill known as the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act. A House committee, meanwhile, began preliminary conversations about lifting the ban on new nuclear developments in Illinois.

The unpaid, 33-member task force outlined in Senate Bill 1104 would be known as the Illinois Regional Generation Reliability Task Force.

It passed 32-15 in a bipartisan vote, although several Democrats voted against the measure. It still needs approval in the House.

The task force would study the effect of state laws, including CEJA, on energy prices as well as grid reliability. It would also study ways to deploy new technologies and ways to “improve” the power supply mix, among other tasks.

It wouldn’t have authority to create any new laws or regulations, but it would report to the General Assembly by Feb. 1, 2023, and each year thereafter.

Labor unions were among some of the prominent backers of the bill, according to witness slips filed on the General Assembly website, while the environmental group Illinois Sierra Club opposed the measure.

Task force makeup The task force’s makeup was part of the reason the Sierra Club opposed it, according to chapter director Jack Darin, who said the task force wouldn’t be representative of the state.

The task force would be made up mostly of industry groups and lawmakers.

That includes three senators and representatives appointed by each of the chambers’ majority leaders and two senators and representatives appointed by the minority leaders. The governor would have an appointee as well.

Labor unions would have two members, one appointed by the Senate president, another by the House speaker.

The PJM regional transmission organization in northern Illinois and the MISO regional transmission organization in the rest of the state would each designate a member as well. Those are both federally-regulated multi-state organizations that

Illinois lawmakers look to address organized retail crime Measure targets individuals who intend to resell stolen items

A group of Illinois senators were joined by officials from the Illinois Retail Merchants Association and state attorney general’s office at a recent news conference to outline an effort to combat organized retail crime.

House Bill 1091, a collaboration between IRMA and attorney gener-

al’s office, defines organized retail crime in law and adds requirements to the information third-party selling marketplaces would be required to collect from their sellers.

It further defines the crime as when an individual “receives, purchases or possesses items for sale or resale knowing or believing the merchandise to be stolen” from a retail establishment, among several other narrow definitions of related criminal acts.

“I believe House Bill 1091 is the appropriate response to reiterate consequences to individuals who threaten local economic growth and participate in organized retail crime,” Glowiak Hilton said.

Third party sellers would be required to verify a user’s identity with a bank account number or other information to prevent stolen goods from being sold online. The selling platform would be required to suspend sellers in violation of the new law.

The attorney general’s office would also have the authority to bring action against an entity believed to be engaging in organized retail crime. The attorney general would also be given subpoena authority pertaining to organized retail crime.

The bill also provides the AG’s office the ability to prosecute through a statewide grand jury.

“Make no mistake, these crimes are not random,” Sen. John Curran, R-Downers Grove, said. “They are sophisticated, orchestrated events that exploit gaps in our criminal statutes to help fund gang activity and crime rates.”

Sen. Doris Turner, D-Springfield, said organized retail crime is more than just a Chicago issue and that it happens throughout Illinois.

Turner said it puts a damper on small business owners who are trying to rebuild the community and economy and that those owners have put in a lot of time, money and resources to do what they enjoy.

“When people are nervous to go to work, scared to go shopping or visit a mall or our small boutique shops in places like downtown Springfield, action needs to be taken to address our community concerns,” Turner

said.

Monica Zanetti, owner of the Wild Rose Boutique in Springfield, said that as a small business owner who runs her shop alone, she fears smashand-grabs. She said the measure is a comprehensive solution in combating retail theft.

Zanetti noted that although she does not experience retail crimes to the extent Chicago stores do, she has had individuals come into her store and take things then go to another store to try and sell what they stole.

The measure proposes that if a ring of smash-and-grab thefts happens across multiple counties, prosecutors would have the jurisdiction to consolidate charges against the offender in one county for all the smash-and-grab incidents.

The bill requires state funds to allow state prosecutors to investigate and prosecute retail criminal rings.

Rob Karr, IRMA President said the necessary funding is about $5 million but those funds would need to be allocated separately in the state’s budget for fiscal year 2023.

Karr said the measure addresses organized retail crime from multiple angles and will, if funded, create a “statewide intelligence gathering and sharing platform” that will allow retailers and law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal level to coordinate in addressing retail theft.

At a separate news conference, Gov. JB Pritzker said that he has yet to see the details of the bill but that he is looking forward to reviewing it.

The measure is part of a broader package of bills addressing crime being discussed in the General Assembly. Karr noted that IRMA has been in conversation with House Speaker Emanuel ‘Chris’ Welch and other House members regarding public safety bills.

Chicago attorney Alan Mills has a client on the Prisoner Review Board’s clemency docket in April.

His hearing has been indefinitely postponed because there is no longer a quorum on the PRB. The client is a contractor who recently remodeled Mills’ law office, the Uptown People’s Law Center, and has a conviction for an old assault. Mills said the client, who he did not identify, didn’t go to prison, but the conviction on his record may impact his ability to get work.

“It’s a total disaster,” Mills said.

On March 28, Oreal James resigned by way of a letter to Gov. JB Pritzker before going to the Senate for a vote, and Eleanor Kaye Wilson failed to get the required votes needed to confirm her appointment.

Under the law, gubernatorial appointments must be approved with-

in 60 session days of their nomination. Wilson and James came under scrutiny when their appointments were pulled and then resubmitted by Pritzker to restart the 60-session-day clock in which their appointments could be heard by the committee.

This practice is allowed under Senate rules and has been used by previous governors.

Lifting cap on new nuclear power?

The House had its own discussion on energy reliability, with Rep. Mark Walker, D-Arlington Heights, leading a discussion about lifting the state’s 1987 cap on new nuclear power developments.

In a conversation with Capitol News Illinois, Walker said the cap was put in place at a time when the

dangers of carbon emissions were not as clear as they are today. Nuclear energy does not emit carbon.

Having the option to consider new nuclear developments, whether they are micro-reactors or large utility-scale plants, would be good to have as the state seeks to be carbon free by 2050, he said.

The discussion at the committee level was on a subject matter basis, meaning any decision to lift the cap would come at a future date.

On Saturday, March 12, - the 110th anniversary of the Girl Scouts - Immaculate Conception Parish held a special Mass for Scouts in its community. Scouts of various ages and levels were invited to participate in the Mass by reading petitions, bringing up the gifts, and receiving various awards and recognitions from the Parish’s Pastor, Very Reverend

“As we predicted, recent attacks on the Prisoner Review Board left the body short-staffed and without the capacity to carry out April’s quarterly clemency hearings,” said Jennifer Soble, executive director of the Illinois Prison Project in a news release on Tuesday. “This is the result of failed tough-on-crime rhetoric meant merely to incite fear and score cheap political points.

“The human toll is real: Justice will be delayed for our clients and for many other people in prison awaiting the chance to be reunited with loved ones. While we’re disappointed, we will not be deterred. We will continue to zealously advocate for the freedom of our clients.”

Recently, Jeff Mears, a downstate Democrat, won a recommendation from the Senate Executive Appointments Committee, but also failed to get confirmed by the full Senate. Two weeks ago, Pritzker pulled the appointment of Max Cerda, a PRB board member who was convicted of a double murder when he was 16 years old and paroled in 1998. It appeared Cerda would not have enough Senate support for approval.

“The Prisoner Review Board is committed to fulfilling its statutory obligations, including final revocation hearings. This work will be carried out with the same dedication and professionalism as before and the Board will adhere to all policies and procedures currently in place,” said Kahala Clay, the Chief Legal Counsel for the PRB. The PRB has been a source of scrutiny from Senate Republicans who questioned the appointment process and the recent decisions on release, including the release of two men, both now in their 70s, who shot an Illinois State Police trooper in 1976.

Pritzker spoke out during a news conference to honor the Illinois State Police last week.

“We have Republicans on that board. We have Democrats on that board. They work together across the aisle. They don’t even think of their party affiliation when they are doing their

job,” Pritzker said. “Now we have Republicans attacking them and their character and their biographies to have Republicans essentially trying to tear apart this agency of government.”

Pritzker said the PRB members are charged with examining the original crime, whether the offender is rehabilitated, whether they caused problems while incarcerated and whether they would be a danger to the public.

“It’s very easy just to say, ‘this person committed an awful crime so many years ago,’ and to say, ‘we’re gonna throw away the key, leave them all in prison,’” Pritzker said. “That’s what you’re gonna end up with. If that’s what people want, well, let’s hear that. But I don’t think that’s what people wanted when we created the Prisoner Review Board.”

Pritzker did not directly respond to a question Tuesday as to how long it would take to get the board to a quorum, but he did note that the recent publicity around the board makes finding replacements more difficult.

The governor could appoint new members before the Senate adjourns, but the Senate would have to act on those appointments before recess on April 8, probably too late to save the April clemency docket. The constitution provides that a governor can make a temporary appointment to a board during a recess of the Senate.

Mills, who represents offenders in the Illinois Department of Corrections, contends that the GOP is trying to generate public outrage to cast Pritzker and Democrats as “soft on crime.” He said the members of the PRB were diverse and well-qualified.

“I’m sorry the politicians have turned this into a campaign issue,” Mills said.

Mills said he plans to represent his contractor when the PRB is back up and running because the man deserves a fresh start and a chance to build his business.

“He does good work,” Mills said.
