At its Formal Meeting held on Monday, March 26, the Village Board unanimously passed two Resolutions that will finally get the repair process started for the bridge.

The bridge, which experiences heavy traffic loads as commuters travel east into Elmhurst, had emergency maintenance completed in September of 2017. All lanes are currently open to traffic.

“It will still have the weight restrictions until the full bridge is replaced,” said Elmhurst City Manager Jim Grabowski at that time, “but it’s good news in terms of traffic flow through Elmhurst and Villa Park.”

Part of the bridge is in Elmhurst and the two municipalities are sharing the cost of repairs. The Villa Park Board of Trustees vote on Monday was to approve funding for engineering of the new bridge. The full construction of the replacement bridge is estimated to cost $4 million.

According to Villa Park staff, 80% of the funding had been secured through a bridge replacement grant.

The process to receive the grants had changed since initial approval in 2017, and the Village had to reapply.

The cost of this contract is not-to-exceed $223,280. Villa Park expects to receive Federal Surface Transportation Program bridge funding for 80% of the cost.

Once rebuilding begins, the bridge is expected to be closed for portions of the construction, have lane limitations and closures, and could take up to one full year to complete.

FAiR is a non-profit organization

whose mission it is to share information with Chicagoland and NW Indiana neighborhoods, which are being negatively affected by aviation changes at O’Hare. The presentation is to include immediate and longterm solutions FAiR is proposing.

According to FAiR, the Elmhurst community will be impacted by nighttime air traffic from 10 p.m.

- 5 a.m. for seven day stretches every other week for all of 2019 and 2020. Discussions are expected to commence soon on a permanent nighttime “Fly Quiet” rotation that would begin in November 2020 and could be in place for the next 20 to 30

years. At Thursday’s meeting, FAiR will discuss its immediate and longterm propositions. Elmhurst residents should be aware that they may or may not like what they hear, FAiR officials said, but should be prepared for anything that may be coming their way.

At fairchicago.org, FAiR’s web site, residents are invited to learn more about the organization as well as the history of the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission (ONCC) and O’Hare Modernization Plan (OMP), the current noise and pollution crisis around O’Hare, and more.

Also available at the web site is the

organization’s latest newsletter, which further explains what will be happening in and around Elmhurst.

Similar meetings are being held in communities surrounding O’Hare -- due of space limitations, priority at this meeting is being given to Elmhurst residents. It is suggested that attendees consider carpooling and parking in other area lots, as the library parking lot may fill to capacity.

The Elmhurst Independent expects to attend the meeting in order to report on FAiR, its findings and suggestions in an upcoming issue.

York Euro Challenge Team tops Midwest Region, heads to Nationals in New York

The York team’s preparation and ability to confidently answer the follow-up questions made them stand above the other teams. The team had spent the last week researching and anticipating different questions to prepare them for the tough Q & A round. The students provided insight and analysis to a problem that economists and leaders from the Euro area are currently trying to solve,” she said.

The final round takes place on April 26, at the New York Federal Reserve in New York City. There are 12 regions across the country, with a total of 24 teams competing.

The students will again be required to give a 15-minute presentation and participate in a 10-minute Q & A follow-up.

In 2017, the top five national

teams received monetary awards generously provided by The Moody’s Foundation. The awards were $1,250 for each member of the first-place team, $1,000 each for second place, $750 each for third place, $500 each for fourth place and $250 each for fifth place.

The Moody’s Foundation also sponsored a trip to Washington, D.C. for the two top teams of 2015.

Similar prize levels are anticipated for 2018.

The Euro Challenge is a program of the Delegation of the European Union in Washington, D.C. The Delegation supports this innovative academic competition to encourage American students to learn more about the European Union and its single currency, the Euro (€).

Man accused of cutting power lines in Lombard DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that a Lombard man had been charged with Criminal Damage to Property, a Class 4 Felony, for allegedly cutting down power lines to several houses in unincorporated Lombard. Austin Michalik 31, of 1S045 3rd Street, appeared in Bond Court, where Judge Brian Jacobs set bond at $30,000 with 10% to apply.

On March 27, 2018, DuPage County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Meyers Road in unincorporated Lombard for a call of someone allegedly cutting power lines to three area homes.

Several minutes later the deputies located Michalik

allegedly walking down Roosevelt Road with tree trimmers in his hands. It is alleged that Michalik used the tree trimmers to cut the power lines to the residences.

“The allegations against Mr. Michalik go beyond vandalism,” Berlin said. “His alleged actions posed a public safety threat not only to anyone who may have come across the downed live power lines but also to the homes whose service was disrupted.”

Michalik’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 2, 2018 in front of Judge Brian Telander.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

York High School’s Euro Challenge team recently competed in and emerged on top in the Midwest Region Euro Challenge competition, beating out eight other teams representing Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota. Illinois teams included Walter Payton College Prep, Bunker Hill High School, Naperville Central High School, Marian Catholic High School and Mundelein High School.

The Midwest Region Euro Challenge competition was hosted by the European Union Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and W!se. Participating students must be in either 9th or 10th grade. York’s 2016 Euro Challenge Team also took first place in the Midwest Region under the guidance of Coach Tamra Carl.

The first-place York team is comprised of seven sophomores: Samantha Cruz, Emily Dow, Brian Kelley, Matt Kentra, Emmet McGovern, Ally Splitstone and Matt Splitstone.

The team was presented with the challenge of choosing a country in the European Union, a problem the country has, and a solution to the problem. They chose to tackle Italy’s high unemployment rate using monetary policy. A team of five students (excluding Matt Splitstone and Emmet McGovern, who served as alternates) gave a 15-minute presentation in front of a panel of judges from Illinois universities and banking industries.

According to Coach Carl, who is a York Social Studies teacher, “Every member of the team played an important part in the presentation, as they explained the challenges of Italy, the EU and the Euro.”

Following the presentation, there was a 10-minute Q & A session with the panel of judges from the Federal Reserve. The judges asked questions beyond the presentation material to determine if our students were the best qualified to compete at a higher level.

March 26 Police said officers responded to the 600 block of W. Belden at around 10:04 p.m. for the report of a disturbance at the above location. A victim told police that an unknown suspect smashed his driver side window. The reporting officer was able to locate the suspect’s information and made contact with suspect’s parents, who stated they would pay for the damaged window. No complaints to be signed.

March 18-March 19 Criminal damage to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of N. Avon between the above dates. A victim told police he found three small cracks in his vehicle’s windshield.

He was told by his mechanic that the damage may have been from a BB gun.

March 1-March 8 Criminal damage to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of N. Avon between the above dates. A victim told police she noticed cracks in her vehicle’s windshield. Her son’s vehicle also showed cracks in the windshield. The victim’s mechanic stated the damage may have been caused by a BB gun.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disturbance

March 23 Police said officers responded to a report of a domestic in the 200 block of N. Geneva at around 10:52 p.m. Upon arrival, the suspects told police they were involved in an argument over bills when they began pushing each other.

No visible injures were observed and one of the suspects agreed to leave for the evening.

March 21 Police said officers responded to the report of a domestic battery at around 4:12 p.m. A victim told police that the suspect took away his gaming system and stated he was struck twice. The suspect denied striking the victim and did take his gaming system away. Social services was notified of the incident.

Disorderly conduct

March 28 A victim at a restaurant in the 600 block of E. North Ave. told police at around 4:36 p.m. that he and the suspect, a co-worker, had gotten into several verbal arguments over the past month. On the above date the suspect reportedly made a threat towards the victim. Contact was made with suspect who stated she did have a verbal argument, but stated victim was intimidating her.

March 23 Police said that subsequent to a solicitor complaint in the 100 block of N. York at around 7:24 p.m., Khari Moore, 19, of Chicago, was located. Police said Moore gave the reporting officer a false name and was later found to be wanted out of DuPage County.

Moore was taken into custody, charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing identification, and posted bond on the warrant.

CALL 800-222-TIPS March 22 Police said a juvenile suspect was arrested for making an online threat at around 7:15 p.m. and found to be in possession of cannabis. The suspect was charged with disorderly conduct and possession of cannabis and transported to a youth home.

March 28 Richard R. Jourige, 22, of Berwyn, was charged with DUI subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Colfax at around 1:02 a.m.

German Palencia, 25, of Chicago, was issued a citation for illegal transportation of alcohol near I-290 and Lake at around 12:05 p.m.

Lonny E. Wachsning, 74, of Wood Dale, was charged with DUI and driving the wrong way on a one-way street near St. Charles and York at around 9:49 p.m.

March 27 Elizabeth Gniatczyk, 53, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI subsequent to a report of a reckless driver in the 600 block of N. Kenilworth at around 2:57 p.m.

March 25 Aaron Radcliff, 30, of Maywood, was charged with DUI, transportation of open alcohol, driving while operating a communication device, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a reckless driving complaint near St. Charles and Ardmore at around 9:27 a.m.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop for improper lane usage near St. Charles and Spring at around 3:49 p.m., the driver was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver was placed under arrest.

According to police, a search of the vehicle located cannabis and what was believed to be a controlled substance. Two passengers were detained for investigation of possession of a controlled substance, and were released without charges, pending lab results. The driver was also released without charges, pending lab results.

Harassment, threats

March 25 A complainant in the 100 block of E. Madison told police she met the suspect on an online dating service. The complainant became uncomfortable with the suspect and ceased dating him, but suspect continued to text the complainant. A reporting officer contacted the

Brian O. Sanchez, 20, of Cicero, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, no valid driver’s license, no rear registration plate light and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Oak at around 9:45 p.m. Police said Julian Perez, 23, of Cicero, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to have a valid warrant out of Kendall County.

March 26 Zachary T. Wallace, 19, of Mason, Ohio, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis at Elmhurst College at around 12:14 a.m.

March 22 Piedad Jorgenson, 27, of Bensenville, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, no rear registration plate light and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Grand at around 1:20 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances

March 28 A victim in the 100 block of Elmwood Terrace told police at around 7:35 p.m. that he found his gray 2003 Volkswagen Jetta in the driveway, propped up on wood blocks and missing all four hubcaps. The victim related he found the four hubcaps in the bushes in front of the house. There were two other vehicles in the driveway that were untouched.

A complainant in the 100 block of N. Addison told police at around 9:55 p.m. that while sitting in a parked vehicle, he heard an audible car alarm and witnessed a suspect rummaging through another vehicle. As the complainant approached the vehicle, the suspect reportedly entered a grey Ford Focus and fled the area.

An officer checked the parking deck, and did not observe any vehicles to have been broken into, nor did the officer hear an audible alarm.

March 22 A complainant in the 1000 block of S. Mitchell told police at around 1:39 p.m. that an unknown suspect called her requesting her bank account number and Social Security number in order for her to receive her Social Security checks. The victim has since reviewed her bank account and no fraudulent activity was found. The account has since been closed.

March 27 Attempted residential burglary was report-

ed in the 100 block of N. Evergreen at around 2:42 p.m. A victim told police she received a notice from the alarm company stating her rear sliding glass door was opened, triggering an alarm. Officers responded to the home and found the sliding door was slightly ajar with two small pry marks. There were no signs of anything missing inside the residence.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 6:37 p.m. A reporting officer responded to the above location for a delayed theft report. Loss prevention stated a suspect described as a black female wearing a maroon baseball hat, a black coat and blue jeans, entered the store and removed athletic shirts, coats and pants off the rack. The suspect held the items in her arms and proceeded to run out the door to a waiting silver or light blue 4-door vehicle with a spoiler on the trunk.

March 26 Retail theft was reported at a food store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:56 p.m. The team leader for the store told police that while checking the health aisle, he noticed numerous empty spots where the Raw Probiotic capsules are displayed. Security footage showed a suspect removing multiple boxes of the capsules from the shelves and place them into a hand basket. The suspect exited the store without paying for the items. The suspect was described as a white male in his early 30s with dark hair, a goatee and beard, wearing a black coat, gray sweatpants and black gym shoes.

Retail theft was reported at a pharmacy in the 100 block of N. Palmer Drive at around 4 p.m. Police said an officer responded for a retail theft that just occurred. On camera, the suspect was observed in the over-the-counter aisle, carrying a green gift bag. A pharmacy employee observed over-the-counter-medication inside the bag and attempted to stop the suspect from leaving the store. The suspect then exited the store without paying for the items and ran southbound through the parking lot.

March 25 Retail theft was reported at a cell phone dealership in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 5:54 p.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for a retail theft that had just occurred. A complainant told police that two suspects walked into the store; one inquired about a cell phone while the other was looking at a display. The complainant stated both suspects left the store without any issues.

Upon further inspection, the complainant discovered a set of headphones were missing from a display.

Identity theft was reported at Elm Creek Drive at around 6:20 p.m. A victim told police T-Mobile advised the victim that an unknown suspect(s) had accessed his account. The victim then received an email notification from Bank of America that an electronic withdrawal was made from his account.

March 24 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 9:36 p.m. Police said an officer responded to the theft, where a suspect left the scene in a silver SUV with a red front fender. Taken from the business were three bottles of alcohol and a few other unknown items.

Theft was reported at Elmhurst College at around 6:30 p.m. A victim told police that while attending a basketball game at the college, he placed his phone in his gym bag. After the game was over, he realized he no longer had his phone. The victim searched the gym for his phone with no results.

Finding your courage: Dare to dream

Cour•age n. 1. The mental strength to venture, persevere and withstand danger, fear or difficulty 2. The quality of being brave; valor I’m going to be bold and declare we’ve all got a fair amount of courage within us. But, like the lion in the Wizard of Oz, we may not recognize our own fearless nature because often in the midst of being courageous we feel anything but brave.

That’s because courage doesn’t materialize in the form of a medal we can wear around our necks.

That would be too easy. And it isn’t always as obvious as rescuing a kitten from a burning building – although that does qualify. It can take any number of shapes and is often a necessary component of the every day. Most of us live a life of courage without even realizing it.

thesaurus, synonyms for courage include determination, endurance, fearlessness, fortitude, boldness, tenacity and guts. We’ve all got guts – I’m speaking in the figurative sense.

Courage in the everyday is the new mom who drops her infant son off for the first time at daycare and then cries all the way to work and tries to dab her eyes dry so no one will know how much mental fortitude that first drop off required.

Courage is the elderly gentleman who understands that after 16 years of love and companionship his loyal

golden retriever is suffering from numerous ailments and it is time to say goodbye.

Courage not only takes guts, it involves listening to them. When you see a bully and speak out even though you may be hesitant to get involved in someone else’s business you are acting with a fearlessness that is inspired. When you step in to give praise to a young dad who is patiently struggling with an inconsolable baby at the grocery store you are similarly bold and courage-filled.

Courage is often invisible.

Sometimes it is getting out of bed in the morning and putting one foot in front of the other to make it through the day. Resolute courage is doing the same thing the next day, and the day after that.

The mom who chooses her family over career to take a leap of

faith and pursue a job that’s closer to home and closer to her heart.

Courageous.

The dad who coaches the youth sports team season after season, mostly because he loves the kids, partly because no other parent will volunteer. Courageous.

Trying something new, even though it will be hard and you might fail. Asking for help. Courageous.

Being the first to say, “I’m sorry.”

Courageous.

Being the first to say, “I love you.” Asking someone for a first – or second – date. Reaching out to hold someone’s hand. Reaching out to further build a relationship.

Courageous.

Courage is admitting you messed up, made a mistake or misjudged a person or situation. It is a willingness to listen to opinions that don’t line up with your own

preconceived notions – political or otherwise.

It takes courage to throw away your imaginary mask and let others see the real you. Simple, but probably one of the toughest scenarios yet because we all have things we think we should hide.

Daring to dream, hope and pursue – perhaps the best kinds of courage of all.

Congratulations to you, today, on your courage. It was there. It is there. And it will be there tomorrow.

For you, for me, for all of us. And for that kind of tenacious bravery we all deserve a medal.

When it comes to finding a lasting relationship, like attracts like Sure, we all have heard that opposites attract, but that usually speaks to attractions when we are young of the bad boy/good girl (or wild gal/tame fella). Certainly, there can be neat freak/messy one or outgoing and talkative/shy and quiet or something like that in happily mated pairs. We might have some opposing characteristics to bring out other sides of each other. That is a good thing. Before my husband, I had never sung karaoke, went hang gliding, sky diving, or climbed a mountain. Or ate hot sauce.

I see it that the underlying glue is shared values, and that is not when opposites attract. Like attracts like.

To last for the long haul anyway.

To have an understanding of what you both feel are priorities in life makes for compatibility. That often comes from a similar upbringing.

I don’t speak for all, and anything goes, and love does conquer all in my book, but it can make for a more harmonious match if you have more things in common that matter to you both than not.

My Prince Charming and I are both from the same locale, growing up within a mile of each other (and not knowing each other). We met later in life. Many people marry their childhood sweethearts and make it til death do them part.

Many find their Special Someone in Phase 2 of life and that someone comes from their same roots.

I hesitate to use celebrity examples, as they have a harder time making a go of marriage while being in a constant spotlight, but Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban found common ground, and part is due to being raised in Australia.

Actors Kristen Bell and Dax Shephard met in California and yet both hailed from Detroit, Michigan.

Shared Midwest roots is part of their story.

You don’t have to come from the same part of the country to click. Two people simply have to understand what is important to their mate and honor that. Emily Gordon and Kumail Nanjiana, married since 2007 and writers of the movie The Big Sick (loosely based on their life), have wildly different backgrounds yet shared values of what matters and they honor each other.

To love, honor, and cherish. That is what makes a relationship last.

Every partnership has its own take on what that means. The only thing

that matters is that the two of them are on the same page.

When I left my first marriage, I was ready to be alone for a long time. I simply wanted someone who gets me. I was lucky to have found my Prince so quickly. As we approach seven years of wedded

bliss (for real, every single day this man amazes me with his thoughtfulness, patience, and caring (and handyman skills)), I am grateful I’ve got someone who gets me.

That is my wish for everyone who seeks a partner. Hang on to

The DuPage County Board of Health supports the treatment of substance use disorders.

A resolution adopted by DuPage County Health Department takes into consideration that more than 11 million Americans misused prescription opioids in 2016, over two million had an opioid-use disorder from prescription opioids or heroin, but only one-in-10 receive treatment.

Although the DuPage Narcan Program (DNP) saved 429 lives from 2014-17, the DuPage County Coroner recorded 274 opioid-related deaths during that same time.

In response to the most recent community health assessment, the goal of addressing substance use disorders is one of five health priorities that the DuPage County Health Department has been working to address with partners throughout the community.

Similar to other chronic health conditions, “we recognize that substance use disorders require effective and evidence-based treatment,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of the health department.

This issue, however, is not felt only in the health sector, with work-

bleeding following the use of synthetic cannabinoid products.

Although individuals report obtaining synthetic cannabinoid products in the Chicagoland area, contaminated products could be in counties across the state. Affected persons have reported obtaining cannabinoid products from convenience stores, dealers, and friends.

There may be good reason why some men do not always exhibit the best fashion sense, particularly when it comes to color coordination.

The fact is that up to eight percent of men (and 0.5 percent of women) experience red-green “color deficiency” (also popularly referred to as “color blindness”). No two people actually see color the same way because color vision involves a complex interplay between photoreceptors (the rods and cones of the retina), the optic nerve, and the brain.

Color deficiency is caused by genetic mutations in photoreceptors, which hamper their ability to detect blue, green, and/or red. Fortunately, there is a tinted lens that can help those with red-green color deficiency improve perception of these colors. Although the lenses will not give you perfect color vision, they will allow you to see more colors and shades of colors. They can make colors more vivid and distinct, making these colors more easily recognizable to you. There is a test for color deficiency. It is simple and typically involves viewing a series of colored designs or objects.

Elmhurst Academy students celebrate all things math on Pi Day Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π and is observed on March 14 since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π. The Lakeview and Woodland students at Elmhurst Academy celebrated all things math with a visit from The DuPage Children’s Museum.

This program, Math In Action, is an interactive, hands-on program that integrates various mathematical

concepts such as cardinality, number operations in base ten, measurement and date, geometry and so much more. More than a dozen different activities and centers, many of which required collaborative play, were set up to reinforce these math concepts.

By using objects that the children can relate to and that are familiar to them, they are more comfortable practicing the concepts that are so vital to their future math success.

Parent volunteers assist Emily Julian and William Ashton, students at Elmhurst Academy, with the “Math In Action” program held at the school on Pi Day. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14, or 3/14, relating to Pi being equal to 3.14.

Bishop Conlon from Joliet Diocese visits IC

During the weekend of March 16, 17 and 18, Immaculate Conception Parish hosted Bishop R. Daniel Conlon, the pastoral leader of the Diocese of Joliet. During the course of his tenure, Bishop Conlon has made it a goal to visit all of the parishes within his diocese.

On Friday morning, March 16, he presided over the weekly school Mass at Immaculate Conception Grade School. Afterward, he greeted students and then proceeded into the school in order to visit classrooms.

Bishop Conlon asked students various questions about their Catholic faith formation and offered to answer students’ questions as well. Additionally, he offered a blessing over each classroom of students with whom he met. He shared with students in 6th grade that, at one time, he had taught 6th grade himself. In one 5th grade class, students brought religious articles into school from home in the hope that Bishop Conlon would bless them.

He did just that. The following day, the bishop met with the ICGS school board to learn about the various board committees and their areas of focus.

Throughout the weekend, Bishop Conlon also met with parish council members, the board of IC Catholic Prep, religious education students, and Elmhurst College students who attend IC Parish. He visited the parish’s food pantry and had the opportunity to experience different facets of IC Parish outreach. ICCP Math Team headed to State Math Finals for 5th straight year On Saturday, Feb. 24, 32 members of the IC Catholic Prep Math Team competed in the 1A Division at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) Regional Competition at North Central College in Naperville. ICCP earned 3rd place at the Regional event, qualifying for the ICTM State Finals at the University of Illinois on May 5, as a full team for the fifth consecutive year.

In the Individual events, Mark Zhao (’18) earned a 1st place and Harry Zhang (’19) placed 4th in Pre-Calculus. Carl Knable (’21)

took 5th place in Algebra I and Steven Gong (’19) tied for 5th place in Algebra 2.

In team competition, the Junior-Senior 8 person team including Ryan Kenneally (‘19), Amber Lewis (’19), Suzy Maloney (’19), Joe Sloan (’19), Victor Cadaoas (’18), Jack Fowler (’18), Alec Vasquez (’18), and Mark Zhou (’18) captured first place.

GreenMan Theatre has assembled a cast of eleven actors from around the area to appear in their upcoming spring production of Monstrous Regiment. The play is adapted by Chicago area playwright and actor Chris Hainsworth from a 2003 novel by popular fantasy author Terry Pratchett.

The satirical novel follows the adventures of Polly Perks, who enlists in the army, along with an unlikely band of young recruits, and is promptly sent to the front lines. creative show and that she is thrilled to have the opportunity to breathe life into the character of Polly. Allison Porschakin, who plays Carborundum, the troll, also is excited to be in a show with such an amazing cast. In one scene, her troll character almost gets into a fight with another monster! Brendan Mertens, who plays a variety of characters, including Death, notes that fans of the book will recognize Death as a recurring character in other Discworld books, although he has only a small role in Monstrous Regiment.

Asked about her role, Elizabeth Ley commented, “Who wouldn’t want to play a witty, supercilious vampire!?” And for Marnie Warner, another huge fan of Pratchett, the opportunity to appear in Monstrous Regiment was a big enough incentive to get her out of her comfort zone; this will be Marnie’s first appearance in a non-musical.

Performance details Monstrous Regiment runs three weekends at GreenMan’s performance space at 232 S. York St. in Elmhurst. The production opens Friday, April 13 and closes April 29. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $17 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.

Hospital honored for medical mission to Lebanon Elmhurst Hospital was recently honored for its medical mission in 2017 to provide care for Syrian refugees in Lebanon. The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) Midwest Chapter presented Elmhurst with the Humanitarian Partnership Award at its 14th Annual Fundraising Gala on Saturday, March 10 at the Westin Lombard.

In its June 1st issue, the Elmhurst Independent published the full story and several photos about the mission based on interviews with the doctors and other personnel who took part in the humanitarian initiative Elmhurst Hospital’s Madhavi Ryali, MD, who was the recipient of the SAMS Leadership Award, coordinated and raised funds for the mission, which resulted in a team of about a dozen doctors, nurses and other caregivers from Elmhurst and Edward Hospitals volunteering for the week-long April 2017 trip.

Eventually, the team grew to 25, including medical professionals affiliated with other hospitals in the Chicago area, Philadelphia and the United Kingdom. Specialties represented included internal medicine, general surgery, urology, oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology, vascular surgery and nephrology.

The mission, one of several sponsored each year by SAMS, included visits to Beirut, Tripoli and the Bekaa Valley to treat patients in hospitals and clinics, and small and large refugee camps. The medical team met with more than 1,500 patients, and performed about 200 surgeries and dozens of diagnostic procedures.

York baseball team continues with positive returns Dukes move to 5-1 after wins against Benet, Maine South

Strong pitching and strong situational success at the plate helped the York baseball team go 2-1 during a recent three-game stretch.

The Dukes moved to 5-1 on the season with wins over Benet Academy and Maine South. York started the week with an 8-6 non-conference loss against Rolling Meadows.

“Rolling Meadows was a little disappointing,” said York coach Dave Kalal. “It was a good eye-opener for the kids. We just did not play well.

We made six errors in the game. We didn’t have the focus we needed in that game to come out on top. It was one of those bad games. Defensively we were not good. I told the kids any time you score six you should win.

Rolling Meadows played well and beat us.”

York was an 8-4 non-conference winner against Benet Academy. “We came back and beat a good Benet team,” said Kalal. “We had better energy and focus and more intensity.”

Kalal noted York has thrived offensively thanks to scoring runs in bunches this season. “The first four or five games of the season we’ve relied on a couple innings where we’ve put up crooked numbers and that’s been enough,” he explained. “We beat Benet with eight runs on four hits and we scored three in the third and five in the fifth. We’re trying to find that consistency inning to inning and game to game.”

Kalal and the Dukes saw that in an 8-0 shutout of Maine South in non-conference play. Jake Hadawi and John Milling combined to throw a two-hit shutout.

“We scored in every inning but the sixth inning,” said Kalal. “That’s opposite what we had been doing by scoring all our runs in a couple of innings. We’re concentrating on getting the lead early but also scoring in every inning. We need that consistency throughout the game.”

Kalal pointed out the Dukes have been making the most of scoring opportunities. “We’ve been pretty efficient with our runs and hits,” he said.

“We had eight runs on seven hits against Maine South and eight runs on four hits against Benet. We had six runs on nine hits against Rolling Meadows. We are getting guys on base and getting them in scoring position and doing a good job of coming up with the big hit or getting that sacrifice fly. It’s the little things that sometimes aren’t thought of as important.”

Kalal noted in the win against Maine South, York in one particular inning had runners on first and second with no outs.

No. 9 hitter Elliott Achepohl laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over and leadoff hitter Andrew Deardurff’s subsequent sacrifice fly scored a run.

“That’s the best kind of baseball you can be part of,” he said. “We tell the guys all the time it’s any way you can get on base for the guy ahead of

you. That’s what your job is. These things help win games at the highschool level and it puts pressure on defenses.”

York’s top four hitters in its lineup had combined for 30 RBI in the first six games. “That shows me that the guys at the bottom of the lineup are doing their job and getting on base,” he said. “The top-four guys also are producing.”

Kalal also has no qualms with the pitching efforts he’s seen thus far.

“The pitching has been consistent and it’s been competitive,” he said.

“It’s been nice to see even though we bring back innings from last year.

With these early games we’ve been able to see guys such as Tim Bowbin, Kellan Gilmartin and Milling pitch.”

Through six games, Kalal has been pleased. “These guys listen and they work hard,” he said. “They really are trying to work and focus and have tunnel vision in terms of what top teams do. The kids are fun to be

around and they work hard.”

York was scheduled to play Proviso East and Elk Grove earlier this week.

“It’s kind of a short week in terms of games, but it’s heavy on practice time,” said Kalal.

Kalal pointed out the Elk Grove game is important due to possible sectional seeding implications later in the season. York has eight games on the schedule against sectional foes.

The York girls badminton team combined varsity and junior-varsity squads and recently won the eight-team Glenbard East invitational.

York also recently defeated Glenbard West in conference action at all levels (15-0 varsity, 15-0 JV and 14-1 freshmen). Additionally, the York JV team defeated Lyons Township 14-1, while the freshmen won 8-7 against Lyons.

IC Catholic Prep benefits from trip to Tennessee Knights seeing bright spots across the diamond

The IC Catholic Prep baseball team saw plenty of heat during its recent spring-break trip to Tennessee.

“We battled some rain and ended up picking up some Tennessee teams that weren’t originally on our schedule,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Frank D’Angelis. “We did a good job of turning over fastballs that we will not see up here. We went up against guys who are signed to play at LSU, Vandy (Vanderbilt) and Alabama who are throwing 88, 89 and 91 miles an hour. We won’t see that in Illinois. It was a good trip. We were able to get some JV games and varsity games in.”

The Knights did run into Maine West during its travels. “We had a lead against Maine West and gave it away,” said D’Angelis. “We saw

good competition. It was a great experience. The guys hit against very good pitching. It’s all you want out of a spring trip when you plan it a year ahead. The guys are sore from playing and the coaches are sore from driving the mini-buses. We’re recovering.”

IC Catholic Prep went 0-4 on the trip. “We don’t take anything away from that record,” said D’Angelis.

“We did not play bad. One team had some Team USA guys on it. We’re seeing freshmen and sophomores down there throwing close to 90. We ran into New Trier in a JV game so we were playing some bigger competition. We went out there 3-2 and came back excited about the experience. We like where this team is at right now. Right now we’re getting healthy coming out of a long week.”

D’Angelis has been pleased with the team’s mound work in the early part of the season. “Our pitching has been strong,” he said. “We lost a couple of front-end starters in Brendan Russ and Austin Reed who both are pitching in college. We needed two

or three guys to fill in those innings and we have guys now who are doing that collectively. We’re getting good pitching outings.”

D’Angelis said one key to the season heading into this spring was the team’s offensive capabilities. “I thought going into the season that we needed to put the ball in play better and do it more consistently,” he said.

“We’re seeing that and we’re seeing our guys running the bases better.

We faced a team in Tennessee in a doubleheader that threw 13 pitchers in 14 innings and it was like they treated it as a batting-practice day for the pitchers. Each of the pitchers was throwing close to 90 and to our guys’ credit they were turning over the baseball and hitting it hard and hitting line drives. Hopefully we can continue to do the same up here the rest of the season. We left a lot of runners on base during our trip and I’m confident that will change.”

The Timothy Christian boys tennis program has enjoyed plenty of success in recent years.

The 2017 version went 13-6 and won the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division title. In the postseason, the doubles team of Nathan Daniels and Trevor Hoogendorn (both now graduated) won a Class A sectional title and finished in the top 12 in the state. As a team, Timothy finished in the top 20 in the Class A state tournament.

Fast forward to this spring and coach Keith Mills has four returning starters from last year’s success story, including senior Joel Daniels, a three-year varsity player who likely will play No. 1 doubles this season. He was a conference champion at No. 2 singles in 2016 and took third in the conference at No. 1 singles last year.

Also back are senior Austin Hoogendorn (No. 1 doubles), senior Luke DeVries (No. 2 doubles) and junior Jack Rhiner (No. 1 singles).

Newcomers to the varsity include sophomore Micah Bosman and junior Ben Rowell, who Mills noted will rotate between No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles. Juniors Christian Morrow and Payton Ward will fight for a spot in the doubles lineup. Junior James Shervheim, a projected No. 1 doubles player, is not playing this season in order to focus on academics, but is expected to return for his senior season.

“We have a very athletic team and that may overcome our inexperience at the varsity level,” said Mills. “Having 13 boys on the varsity gives me the numbers to juggle lineups and matchups with opponents. We are very quick on the court and the depth in the lineup should give us wins at the lower positions.”

Mills noted the program has 23 players in it for the two levels.

The coach added seniors Ben Helmkamp, Nico Zhu, 6-6 basketball standout Brandon Orange and juniors Will Gerstung and Matt Van Zeelt also could help the squad.

Timothy dropped its first match of the season, 4-1, to non-conference foe Francis W. Parker out of Chicago. “Parker always fields a solid lineup,” said Mills.

Rhiner had Timothy’s lone win at No. 1 singles where he upset a strong player by scores of 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. The Trojans played without Daniels who has been sidelined with an injury. “We bumped everyone up a spot in doubles,” said Mills. “Austin Hoogendorn and Micah Bosman played well in their match at first doubles.”

Mills said Wheaton Academy in the team to beat in the conference.

“They should be a contender for a state team title,” he said. Mills said his squad and Glenbard South would battle for second place in the conference.

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team plays well against Wheaton Academy Knights to open play in Pepsi Showdown this weekend CORRESPONDENT

While the IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team lost its Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division opener to Wheaton Academy, coach Antonio Godinez took some positives out of the contest.

The Knights dropped a 4-1 decision to Wheaton Academy. Bella Leslie scored IC Catholic Prep’s only goal on an assist from Olivia Hurt.

The Knights also lost a recent 4-0 non-conference game to Providence Catholic.

“The girls have started believing in the capacity they have as a group,” said Godinez. “They work really well as a group. Despite not winning against Wheaton Academy, it was our best performance of the season so far. The girls came together as a team. They believe in the work they have put in the last month. I’m excited about their performance recently.”

The Knights took some time off over the recent spring break week.

“This team has shown a lot of progress since I took over two or three months ago,” said Godinez. “Thy can

Bison has been equally impressed with the players’ mindsets during practice time. “The boys are able to articulate what they need to work on and we do that,” she said. “If the doubles players need to work on serving, we work on serving. really well. They want to do better than last year. That’s what I keep hearing. None of them ever give up. Other than one match in a meet, we’ve had no 6-0 losses. We’ve had a lot of 7-5s. They all are fighters. It’s awesome.”

Bison has been able to intermix players in singles and doubles competitions thus far. “We’ve had players who can play either. We’ve mixed it up,” she said. “A good singles player is a good doubles player. We have 14 guys on the varsity and we’ve rotated in all 14, plus we’ve pulled up two players from JV1 to spice things up a little and see what they can do.”

The coach noted York has two more matches scheduled this week that will provide even further evaluation ahead of the start of West Suburban Conference Silver Division play.

“We start conference in the middle part of April and I’m hoping by then we have a set schedule with our lineup,” she said. “The non-conference schedule we have is nice because we can see where players fit.

Our goal is the second week of April to have things tested out. The boys have been awesome. We had no expectations going into this. They went out and played and did the best they could. They are excited to win.”

York was scheduled to play Wheaton-Warrenville South earlier this week and will head to Arlington Heights Saturday for the Hersey eight-team invitational.

AAUW plans April meeting program on World Relief The AAUW Elmhurst Area Branch will hold its April Program/Meeting on Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library in the large meeting room. Maggie Boynton, MSW, of World Relief-DuPage/ Aurora will be the keynote speaker.

Maggie holds a master’s degree in social work and has worked for World Relief for five years. World Relief is a national and international organization that partners with local churches and works to offer a comprehensive range of services to refugees and immigrants. These include initial resettlement services, employment services, youth services, and counseling services. The agency began offering services in DuPage County in 1979 and helps

more than 5,000 clients each year, 90% of whom are low income. The goal of World Relief is to empower local church communities to serve the most vulnerable and to help refugees and immigrants become fully functioning, integrated participants in society.

Maggie is currently the Refugee Services Volunteer Manager. She will describe the agency’s presence and services in DuPage County.

Maggie will also talk about the current political process and the impact on the provision of those services.

Madeline Hughes one of two selected for program

Madeline Hughes, of Elmhurst, and Lillian Hoigard, of La Grange, recently accompanied State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) on the floor of the Illinois House of Representatives as a part of the Page-ForA-Day program.

“It is amazing to see to see the enthusiasm our students have for government and how eager they are to participate in the civic process,” Conroy said. “I hope Madeline and Lillian enjoyed themselves and learned a lot, and I invite any other students who are planning on visiting Springfield to reach out to my office for an opportunity to be a page for the day.

“The page program is an incredible opportunity for our students to learn about workings of state government. I am so happy to see students our community take advantage of this opportunity and I look forward to seeing what they do in the future.”

Hughes is a student at York Community High School, while Lillian attends Lyons Township High School.

As pages, they were allowed onto the House floor where they were able to meet with legislators from across the state and observe the legislative debate.

Hughes works as an intern in Conroy’s constituent service office in Villa Park.

Local attorney warns of loss of tax refunds Local tax attorney Patrick T. Sheehan warns that if you have not yet filed your federal Form 1040 tax return for 2014 with the IRS, any refund listed on that tax return will soon be barred by the refund statute of limitations.

“Generally speaking, a taxpayer has three years from the due date of the tax return to claim a refund for that year, plus any extension,” he said.

“The due date of the 2014 federal Form 1040 tax returns was April 15, 2015. If an extension was not timely filed, the expiration of the refund statute of limitation for 2014 is April 17, 2018. If you have not yet filed your federal Form 1040 tax return for 2014 with the IRS, I strongly urge you to do so on or before April 17, 2018, to ensure that you receive the refund to which you are entitled/” The IRS recently announced that nearly one million people should have filed federal tax returns for 2014 but didn’t, leaving $1.1 billion in unclaimed refunds for 2014.

According to IRS estimates, half of the potential refunds for 2014 are $847 or more.

If your tax return for 2014 is filed on or after April 17, 2018, and if an extension was not timely filed, the law bars any refund to which you are entitled. Even if you have unpaid liabilities for other years, the lost refund does not apply to any of the other years.

The program will offer two interdisciplinary degrees in environmental studies—a policy-focused Bachelor of Arts degree, and a science-focused Bachelor of Science degree.

Through interdisciplinary academic courses, internships, experiential and co-curricular activities, the program’s goal is for Elmhurst students to become compassionate stewards of the environment, scholars in sustainability and environmental management, and experts in environmental studies.

Since their inception in 1952, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations have given more than 3,800 grants totaling more than $300 million to colleges and universities, hospitals, medical schools and divinity schools.

Bicycle Club to host Safety Seminar; urges two-mile initiative

On Thursday April 19 from 7 – 8:30 p.m., the Elmhurst Bicycle Club is sponsoring a Bicycle Safety Seminar at the Elmhurst Library, called the 2-Mile Initiative.

The 2-Mile Initiative encourages participants to walk or bike to events, errands, or places within two miles of their home, instead of taking the car.

During the seminar, there will be a review of basic rules for riding on the road, the Prairie Path, or Forest Preserves trails. Among the topics covered will be the basic ABC’s of a simple bicycle safety check before the ride, the importance of lights for night riding, and more.

The prestigious Arthur Vining Davis Foundations have awarded Elmhurst College a planning grant that will enable the College to begin developing an undergraduate program in environmental studies to prepare professionals to address the world’s environmental challenges and opportunities.

With the $78,750 planning grant, recently approved by the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations Board of Trustees, the College will identify the curricular and administrative needs for the development of the bachelor’s degree program in the growing academic field. The grant will help Elmhurst College to accept its first class of prospective environmental studies majors in Fall 2019.

Sparked by increased public interest and awareness of the environment, undergraduate academic programs in environmental studies continue to increase in popularity and demand. Charles M. Schulz was one of the most prolific comic strip artists of all time, producing nearly 18,000 strips during his career. Aspiring artists and cartoonists are invited to be inspired

by Schulz’s artwork, creativity, and humor by participating in a hands-on workshop designed for families.

The Elmhurst History Museum, located at 120 E. Park Ave., presents a Family Cartooning Workshop on Saturday, April 14 from 2-3:30 p.m.

Participants age 6 and up (accompanied by an adult) will learn how cartoonists get their ideas, practice drawing skills, and use visual and verbal writing to tell an engaging story.

The workshop will be led by professional cartoonist Mark Anderson of Andertoons in Chicago, whose cartoons have been widely published in magazines, newspapers, greeting cards, and more. Anderson teaches interactive cartooning workshops where students will learn to use problem solving and design thinking, and tap into their individual interests and curiosity to develop their own

cartooning style.

The workshop takes place in the Elmhurst History Museum’s Education Center, and registration is required via the Museum’s web site at elmhursthistory.org (in the Family Programs section) or call 630-5306874. The fee is $10 per participant.

About the related exhibit The Family Cartooning Workshop is presented in connection with the Elmhurst History Museum’s current exhibit, “Snoopy and the Red Baron,” a new traveling exhibit from the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, CA. The exhibit shares the story of one of the most popular and charismatic Peanuts characters: Snoopy as the World War I Flying Ace. Visitors will learn about this favorite Peanuts storyline through reproductions of Schulz’s original comic strip artwork, photographs, film clips, and more. Kids can try on aviator caps and goggles for a photo-op next to Snoopy’s doghouse. A family exhibit guide is available for exploring the exhibit.
