Fight at tavern near Elmhurst leaves one dead Woman in custody after gun matching shell casings found in her home

The deceased is 28-year-old Dominique Bynum, but no further details were provided at press time.

Thornton appeared before Cook County Judge David Navarro, who denied bail.

While the motive for the alleged attack was not clear, the Chicago

Tribune reported that shortly after 2 a.m. on March 26, police were called to Galway Bar and Grill on a report of a person being shot in the parking lot.

Thornton was in the tavern with a group of friends while Bynum was nearby in a separate group, when

members of the two groups reportedly began fighting, the Tribune reported.

Galway staff asked both groups to depart the premises. Thornton and her friends were reportedly walking toward her car in the lot when they were spotted by another witness who

was seated in her own vehicle parked next to Thornton. That witness told police that she saw Thornton enter her car to retrieve something.

According to several news reports citing Cook County Sheriff officials, a 28-year-old man was shot and killed outside of Galway Bar and Grill, located at 12045 Roosevelt Road, in unincorporated Proviso Township.

Robin Thornton, 34, of Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood, stands accused of the crime and faces first-degree murder charges. She was arrested at her home following the incident when officers executed a search warrant and discovered a firearm which matched the shell casings found at the scene.

New neighbors come to roost

According to Michael McPheron, administrative assistant for Elmhurst Community Funeral Home, The Ahlgrim Chapel, this mother mallard duck has decided to make her nest in a raised flower planter by their carport. “We noticed her out there one day, and we check on her every day to see how she is getting along.” She has laid a total of nine eggs so far. McPheron reached out to the local Willowbrook Wildlife group to assist with caring for the mother and her eggs. “This certainly brings new life into our funeral home and thought the community might find this uplifting.”

While investigating the parking lot at Galway’s, police found three 9mm shell casings in the middle of the lot along with an opened folding knife under Bynum’s SUV. Thornton was arrested at her home, where police found the gun that matched the shell casings.

At least one witness identified Thornton in a photo array and portions of the attack were caught on surveillance camera, according to prosecutors.

According to her attorney, Cook County Assistant Public Defender Courtney Smallwood, Thornton has been employed for 13 years as an operations specialist for JPMorgan Chase.

She has no criminal background and, in addition, has a valid FOID card as

well as a concealed carry license.

Before denying bail, Navarro warned Thornton that if convicted she could still face up to natural life in prison, the Tribune reported.

“It is regardless of the fact that you do not have any prior criminal history,” Navarro said. “It is regardless of the fact that you’ve got an FOID, a concealed carry license.”

Thornton was scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday in Maywood.

More than 400,000 DuPage residents have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose As of Wednesday, April 21, 280,503, or 30.2 percent, of DuPage County residents have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Additionally, 86.5 percent of DuPage County residents ages 65 years and older have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. Based on data from Illinois Department of Public

Health (IDPH), DuPage County currently has the highest percentage of all 102 counties with 44 percent of the total population vaccinated with at least one dose. In the past week, more than 70,000 vaccine doses were administered into the arms of DuPage County residents for a total of 690,802 doses administered to date.

Since COVID-19 vaccinations began in December, DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) and local vaccine provider partners have been working tirelessly to vaccinate eligible individuals as quickly as supply has allowed. According to the Illinois Comprehensive Automated Immunization Registry Exchange (I-CARE) data, DuPage County vaccine providers have administered more than 540,720 COVID-19 vaccine doses to eligible individuals through April 13. Of the over half a million doses administered, slightly over 50 percent were given to DuPage County residents; the remainder were given to out-of-county residents including many individuals who work in DuPage and support our communities.

“We are incredibly thankful to our wonderful vaccine provider partners who have been a tremendous asset in vaccinating so many eligible individuals as quickly and equitably as possible in our county,” said Karen Ayala, Executive Director of DuPage County Health Department.

Despite the increase in vaccinated residents, COVID-19 community transmission levels remain substantial. The highest case activity continues to be observed in youth aged 5-19 years as well as adults in the 20- to 39-year-old and 40- to 59-year-old age groups.

As of Wednesday, April 21, local hospitals reported 110 COVID-19 related hospitalizations in daily census reports including 25 patients in the intensive-care unit (ICU).

Both hospitalizations and the number of patients reported in ICU care have increased significantly since March 15. Additionally, DCHD is closely monitoring reports of COVID-19 variants in the county. These variants are classified as COVID-19 variants of concern (VOC) as they spread more easily and quickly than other variants and likely cause more severe disease based on hospitalizations and case-fatality rates. Based on national and state-level genomic surveillance efforts to date, 80 cases of B.1.1.7, six cases of P.1, and four cases of B.1.427/B.1.429 variants have been identified in DuPage County. In Illinois, 1,141 cases of B.1.1.7, 328 cases of P.1, and 97 cases of B.1.427/429 variants have been reported as of Apr. 20.

About ‘vaccine breakthrough cases’ Vaccines are a safe and effective public health tool, critical to stopping the further spread of illness and preventing severe disease and death related to COVID-19. However, a small percentage of people who are fully vaccinated may still get COVID-19, with or without symptoms, and possibly spread the virus to others. These are called “vaccine breakthrough cases.” This means that while people who have been vaccinated are much less likely to get sick, it may still happen. Experts continue to study how common these cases are.

Despite the low likelihood of breakthrough infection, DCHD strongly recommends all eligible persons to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as it is available to them. Because there is a chance that someone could still get sick and possibly spread COVID-19 to others after being fully vaccinated, everyone should continue to take everyday actions to protect themselves and others, like wearing a mask, maintaining physical distance, avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces, and washing hands often, especially while COVID-19 activity is high in DuPage County. In addition, to help interrupt community spread, persons with COVID-19 infection need to self-isolate (e.g., stay home except for medical care) and their close contacts need to self-quarantine unless they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have had COVID-19 infection within three months of exposure.

Last week, DCHD received 43,790 first doses of vaccine, which was an increase of 23,790 doses from the week prior. From this allocation, 16,170 doses were distributed to medical practices, 2,000 doses to home health providers, 1,500 doses were distributed to occupational health centers, 11,360 doses were distributed to hospitals, 1,400 doses were distributed to pharmacies, 1,970 doses were distributed to Federally Qualified Health Centers, 1,200 doses were distributed to urgent care centers, and 8,190 doses are supplying the DCHD Community Vaccination Clinic. Elmhurst Garden Club awards annual scholarships Applications submitted by video; no luncheon this year due to COVID-19

In March 2020, the Elmhurst Garden Club ((EGC) EGC awarded a total of $11,500 in scholarships to the following extremely accomplished students: Elmhurst resident Tristan Contant, Calvin University; Chicago resident Logan Novak,

Northwestern University; Chicago resident Nora Hard, Yale University; and Lisle resident Zachary Rahn, College of DuPage.

Traditionally, EGC honors its scholarship recipients at a “Meet the Scholars” luncheon at Wilder Mansion.

Due to COVID, this was not

possible. Instead, each student was asked to prepare a video highlighting their research activities or interests. EGC president Georgia Dolan complied the videos and created EGC’s very first “Meet the Scholars” presentation which she sent to all EGC members. Members were able to view and enjoy the video at their leisure.

EGC’s scholarship program serves to encourage and support education, research, and teaching careers in a variety of study including horticulture, conservation, landscape design, botany, and environmental studies. To be eligible, a student must be both an Il-

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Assault, battery April 19 Police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital at around 5:20 p.m. for the report of a combative patient. The victim related the suspect used her head to strike the victim in the stomach and spat on the victim. Charges are pending.

April 13-April 18 A complainant and a victim came into the police station at around 2:20 p.m. to report two incidents when the victim was bullied and battered sometime between the above dates. An investigation is pending.

April 15 Jeffrey Harlan, 44, of Lombard, was charged with battery at Elmhurst Hospital at around 2:13 p.m. Police said a reporting officer met with Elmhurst Hospital security who reported Harlan kicked a security officer.

Criminal defacement, criminal trespass, criminal damage April 21 A reporting officer met with a complainant in the 100 block of S. York at around 10:08 a.m. who stated she was concerned about a suspect in one of the company-owned properties without authorization. The complainant wished to have the suspect served with a no-trespass order. This case is pending investigation.

April 16 A complainant near Eggleston and Washington told police as she drove westbound on Eggleston at around 5:42 p.m., she heard a loud banging sound come from the passenger side of her vehicle. Upon inspection, she found glass shards and two golf ball-sized rocks on the ground. A glass panel between the front and rear passenger windows was shattered.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct April 21 Ryan Blazinski, 41, of Chicago, was charged with disorderly conduct/befouling property in the 100 block of W. First at around 10:06 p.m.

Police said the suspect was observed urinating on a wall at the Elmhurst train depot.

April 16 Michael Kirksy, 23, of La Grange, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/befouling public property in the 200 block of Addison at around 12:52 a.m. Police said Kirksy was observed by a reporting officer urinating on a building and sidewalk.

charged with DUI, possession of cannabis by driver, disobeying a traffic control device and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Schiller at around 12:07 a.m.

April 19 Clevonte A. Holmes, 23, of Bellwood, was charged with DUI and stopping in the roadway in the 300 block of E. St. Charles at around 3:19 a.m.

April 18 Karina Alvarez, 26, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis by a driver, illegal transportation of open alcohol, disobeying a traffic control device, driving the wrong way on a one-way street, improper lighting, unsafe tires and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and First at around 3:05 a.m.

Michael D. Pedote, 20, of Elmhurst, and Sean M. Hipskind, 19, of Elmhurst, were issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor in the 100 block of Fairfield at around 4:30 a.m. Police said officers responded to a report of two subjects possibly pulling on vehicle door handles and running through yards.

According to police, officers located the subjects an found they were under the influence of alcohol and under the age of 21.

April 17 Izaiah R X Rodriguez, 21, of Lansing, Mich., was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis by driver, disobeying a traffic control signal, no valid registration and transportation of open alcohol subsequent to a traffic stop near Third and Ridgeland at around 1:25 a.m.

Police said Alexander F. Balderas, 23, of Lansing, Mich., a passenger in the vehicle, was found to be intoxicated and in possession of a loaded firearm. Balderas was charged with carrying a concealed firearm under the influence of alcohol, unlawful possession of cannabis by a passenger and possession of open alcohol by passenger. Vincente S. Alvarado, 23, of Lansing, Mich., also a passenger in the vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of open alcohol in a vehicle.

April 16 Riccardo A. Alvarez, 20, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI, no insurance, possession of open alcohol in a vehicle, consumption of alcohol by a minor and for squealing tires, while Eric Morales, 21, of Rolling Meadows, a passenger in the vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis by a passenger subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Clinton at around 12:23 a.m.

Michael A. Thomas, 39, of Wichita, Kan., a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for illegal transportation of alcoholic liquor subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Grand at around 3:25 a.m.

Fleeing, eluding April 17 Police said that subsequent to an attempted traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 11:13 p.m., the suspect fled at a high rate of speed. The dark colored sport motorcycle was last seen entering onto westbound I-290 from northbound Route 83. An ISPERN message was broadcast.

Mob action April 19-April 22 Police said a reporting officer responded to Elmhurst Hospital for the delayed report of an alleged battery that reportedly occurred Dec. 13, 2020. The complainant related that the victim and his friends were involved in a

physical fight in the 100 block of N. Addison.

Subsequent to investigation, Brian Bianco, 27, of Berwyn, was served with charges for mob action on April 19, and Nestor Hernandez was served with charges for mob action on April 22.

Obstruction April 21 Kierrie Murphy, 29, of Hazel Crest, was charged with obstructing identification, driving while license suspended, speeding, improper lane usage, failure to signal and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and I-290 at around 3:47 a.m. Police said Murphy provided the reporting officer with a false name and date of birth.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance April 18 Jimmie Howard, 42, of Chicago, and Keonna Ray, 38, of Chicago, were issued citations for possession of open alcohol in a vehicle in the 600 block of W. North at around 6:31 p.m.

Oscar Suarez, 40, of Lombard, was charged with possession of cannabis by a driver, driving while license suspended and operating a vehicle while using an electronic communication device subsequent to a traffic stop near York and North at around 2:34 p.m.

April 15 Rafael Murguia, 34, of Bensenville, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver, unlawful use of an electronic communication device and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Fremont at around 6:12 p.m.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery April 21 Damion Stapleton, 50, of Hillside, was charged with felony theft in the 700 block of S. York at around 4:28 a.m. Police said Stapleton was found to have taken a bicycle from the back yard of a residence as well as several other items without permission.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 5:20 p.m. A reporting officer met with the complainant who reported she reviewed security footage which showed a female suspect place several items into a bag and walk past the final point of sale. The suspect is described as a white female approximately 5-9, 160 pounds with blonde hair, and wearing a red, long-sleeved shirt. The unknown suspect exited the store and entered a black Cadillac Escalade. The vehicle drove off last seen traveling southbound on York.

April 19April 20 A vehicle was reported stolen in the 100 block of S. Kenmore sometime between the above dates. The reporting officer met with the victim who stated her vehicle had been taken from the driveway sometime overnight. The victim stated the vehicle was left unsecured and with the keys inside. The vehicle was later located in Dolton and returned to the victim.

March 18-April 20 Deceptive practice was reported in the 100 block of W. Park. A reporting officer met with the victim who stated he was hired by the suspect to provide cleaning services at the suspect’s business. The suspect provided the victim with a check for the completed work.

The victim was later notified the check was returned due to the suspect’s account being closed. The suspect has not returned phone calls or made any arrangements to pay for work the victim had completed. This case is pending investigation.

April 9-April 19 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 500 block of Alexander. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) stole the catalytic converter from his 2001 Acura TL while it was parked in the driveway of his home sometime between the above dates.

April 18 A victim at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 told police at around 4:54 p.m. that an unknown suspect attempted to use his credit card information and presented a fictitious ID displaying the victim’s name. The suspect left the fictitious ID at the store when the purchase was denied. The suspect was dropped off and left the scene in a newer model black Range Rover Velar. An investigation is pending.

A reporting officer spoke with a victim in the 300 block of S. Route 83 who reported an unknown suspect attempted to purchase merchandise using the victim’s credit card information. The unknown suspect also presented a fictitious driver’s license which contained the victim’s personal identifying information.

This case is pending investigation.

April 16 A complainant in the 600 block of Bryan told police at around 12:51 p.m. that she believes the suspect took her credit card and used it without her permission. The suspect denied using the credit card and said the complainant often hides items and cannot find them.

Theft by deception was reported in the 700 block of Cambridge at around 1:35 p.m. A complainant told police that after receiving an error message displayed on her computer, she called the provided phone number in an attempt to fix the problem. She gave the unknown suspect access to her computer and provided a picture of one of her checks for payment. Once she determined the incident to be a scam, the complainant froze her account and contacted her credit card companies.

April 14-April 16 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 100 block of Prospect. A victim told police that while her vehicle was parked in the Dinkmeyer Hall parking lot, an unknown suspect(s) cut her vehicle’s exhaust system and removed the catalytic converter sometime between the above dates.

April 14-April 15 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 200 block of N. Myrtle. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed the catalytic converter from her vehicle while it was parked in the driveway sometime between the above dates.

Warrant arrest

April 19 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and I-290 at around 11:18 p.m., Victor M. Gonzalez Carrillo, 36, of Villa Park, was found to have a revoked driver’s license and a valid warrant from the Lake County Sheriff’s office. The suspect also was charged with driving while license revoked and improper lighting.

Cullerton advances measure to provide students with mental health resources As rates of suicide and depression among young people rise, State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D- Villa Park) advanced a measure that would ensure suicide prevention information is readily available to college students.

“Crisis lines are such an important resource to those struggling with their mental health,” Cullerton said.

“Something as simple as providing this information on a student ID card, which most college students are carrying around all day anyway, could save a life.”

The measure would require any public institution of higher education that issues student ID cards to publish the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Crisis Text Line on the back of each card as well on their website.

According to the CDC, between 2007 and 2018, suicide rates for people aged 10-24 increased by 57.4%.

Additionally, a CDC survey taken in June of 2020 found that one in four young people aged 18-24 reported seriously considering suicide over the 30-day period.

“College students had a unique set of struggles during this unprecedented year,” Cullerton said. “This combined with the already high rates of suicide in young people calls for action in getting students the resources they need to hopefully prevent a tragedy.”

Senate Bill 2014 passed the Senate and now moves to the House for further consideration.

Initiative by Glowiak Hilton aims to protect survivors of human trafficking More survivors of violent crime would be able to keep their home addresses private as participants in the Illinois Address Confidentiality Program (ACP) under a proposal from State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) to expand protections for survivors of human trafficking.

“Violent crime survivors undergo substantial emotional and mental trauma,” Glowiak Hilton said.

“By adding human trafficking to the list of crimes protected by the ACP, we’re offering survivors some peace of mind that their sensitive personal information is safe and protected against abusers.”

Glowiak Hilton’s measure strengthens the ACP managed by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office by allowing survivors of human trafficking to participate and keep their addresses private. The legislation also clarifies the process for ACP participants to register to vote.

Originally, the ACP was established to protect the locations of domestic violence survivors. Last year, Glowiak Hilton passed a law expanding protections for survivors of sexual

assault and stalking, and she has now advanced Senate Bill 593 to allow human trafficking survivors to opt in as well.

Currently, the ACP provides survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking and their household members with a substitute address to use in place of their actual home, school and work addresses in public records. This helps survivors prevent their former abusers from being able to locate them.

For example, the ACP substitute address can be used by participants when creating or updating public records, such as driver’s license or state-issued identification card.

“Expanding the ACP is an integral part of a safety plan for survivors to feel protected in their communities,” Glowiak Hilton said. “This proposal works to ensure survivors have a sense of security to allow them to heal without fear of retaliation from their abusers.”

Senate Bill 593 passed the Senate and now heads to the House for further consideration.

I want to thank the voters who participated in the April 6 elections, particularly those who supported me. These municipal elections are important; the successful candidates may have a strong impact on our City, our schools and our parks for years to come.

I also want to thank all the candidates who were willing to serve, worked very hard and put themselves out to the community for consideration.

All the campaigns were largely positive and there was a lot of information to help the voters to learn about

the candidates. To those who did not win, I hope you found the experience rewarding, nonetheless. To those who were elected, I wish you the best as you take office.

The theme of my campaign was “Working Together for Elmhurst.”

Small tasks signify a big change

Yesterday I changed a light bulb.

It was the overhead one at the entrance to our basement stairs.

I had to use a stepping stool in order to reach it. That light bulb has burned out many times in the 20 years since I’ve lived in my house, but this was the first time I changed it, or even contemplated the task.

It was one of the first times I’ve changed any light bulb. Someone else was always here to change the light bulbs. I never had to give them a second thought. Now I do.

Changing light bulbs has become my duty, as have myriad other chores. He used to brown the hamburger. He used to change the kitty litter. He used to hold the TV remote. He used to vacuum the stairs. He used to take care of the cars — oil changes, adding air to the tires and scheduling needed repairs. He could “feel” when the brakes or the tires were bad.

I don’t have that particular sixth sense, but I suppose I will have to cultivate it.

He was the family driver. He knew I didn’t like driving, so he took on the chore. It was like that between us. When we unloaded the dishwasher, I knew he didn’t like doing the silverware, so I always

browned hamburger. In unloading the dishwasher. In holding the TV remote. In a bathtub clog.

Jack Ritchie McCurdy, 87 Jack Ritchie McCurdy, of Elmhurst, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 surrounded by his loving family and wife of 66 years, Joanne McCurdy, née Kutsus. Jack was a devoted father to Michael and Michelle; proud grandfather of Jake, Rose, Haley and the late Brendan; and dear brother of Mary Jane McKearney and the late Walter McCurdy.

Jack graduated in 1955 from Bradley University as a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity before his career as a leader at Dictaphone Pitney Bowes Corporation in Chicago. As a member of the US Army’s 8th Infantry, Jack served his country honorably during a tour of duty in Germany. A man of strong faith, Jack was a longtime member of Christ Church in Oak Brook. The only thing bigger than Jack’s size 16 feet was his heart, especially in the presence of animals.

Jack’s life was filled with traveling and adventures, and he spent his retirement with family in Door County, Wis., or exploring the world on his own and with friends. Jack could be found walking across England coast to coast with Country Walkers, living with Eskimos in Alaska, swimming in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, completing Astronaut Training Camp, visiting a U.S. outpost in Antarctica, repeatedly climbing the Swiss Alps, or traveling to places like Russia, France, Italy, Scandinavia, the U.S. deserts and the Rocky Mountains. Jack would want us to honor his memory by enjoying every day as he did and remembering to “control the controllables.”

Visitation will be Thursday, April 29, from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 South York Road in Elmhurst. Following the visitation and prayer service, Jack’s family will gather privately.

Wanda S. Maxson, 88 Wanda Bertha (Schottenberg) Maxson, a longtime resident of Oak Brook, died on April 22, 2021, at the age of 88. Wanda is survived by her devoted husband Ralph E. Maxson, her two caring children, Holly (Kelly) Kost and Greg (Linda) Maxson, her beloved grandchildren, Shelby, Haley and Spencer Kost and Aaron (Samantha) Roy, her delightful great-grandson, Emmett Roy, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bertha Freida (Zbinden) Schottenberg and Frederick Henry Schottenberg, and her infant brother, Frederick Otto Schottenberg.

Wanda was born in Chicago on May 12, 1932, and grew up on a farm located just south of Elmhurst. She attended the tworoom Butler School in Oak Brook, Yorkfield Elementary School and York High School in Elmhurst.

She attended Miami University in Miami, Florida and the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn.

In 1958, Wanda married Ralph and they started a lifelong adventure together. Wanda enjoyed entertaining and hosted many parties and neighborhood gatherings. As a young couple, Wanda and Ralph formed an amateur play group with several couples, even giving out annual “Academy Awards.” Wanda loved to travel and organized numerous family road trips across the U.S. Wanda loved her family, especially her grandchildren, and was a devoted supporter of their musical and athletic endeavors, attending (and oftentimes driving them to) countless music, marching band and ballet performances and their many tennis and other sporting events.

Republican Club, Oak Brook Women’s Club, PEO Chapter HY, the Hinsdale Chapter of the Lyric Opera Society, several PTA groups and the Girl Scouts. Wanda was a long-time member of the Yorkfield Presbyterian Church in Elmhurst, devoting much of her time to the Yorkfield Food Pantry.

A devoted friend to many, Wanda will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Park Place of Elmhurst will be sharing Cinco de Mayo festivities from 11 a.m. to 12 noon on Wednesday, May 5, including traditional food favorites created by in-house Chef Tormey and the musical sounds of Cielito Lindo, a Mariachi band

Stronger restrictions for scam callers advanced by Glowiak Hilton

To protect residents from being misled by phone scams, State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) has advanced a bipartisan initiative out of the Senate to outlaw scam call operators from disguising their identity by having a false telephone number show up on caller ID. “As more aspects of our lives become digital, scammers use deceitful tricks to persuade residents into giving them personal information,” Glowiak Hilton said. “By prohibiting automated solicitors from falsifying caller ID, we can help protect residents from falling victim to telephone scams.”

In Illinois, the Telephone Solicitations Act requires a live operator to state his or her name, the organization they are representing, and the purpose for the call. The law also prohibits a solicitor from manipulat-

ing caller ID, commonly known as spoofing. However, current state law does not address when the caller is not a live operator.

To protect consumers, Glowiak Hilton’s initiative requires the operator of any soliciting telephone call to immediately state the affiliated business and the purpose of the call, and to confirm consent from the receiver.

“Deceitful business practices like spoofing are wrong and must be outlawed,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Call authentication is critical for protecting consumers against scammers who mask their identity and intentionally seek to defraud vulnerable residents.”

Senate Bill 2225 passed the Senate and moves for further deliberation in the House.

Cullerton measure aims to reduce number of local units of government To encourage government consolidation and promote cost-saving initiatives at the local level, State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) passed a measure through the Senate that prohibits the creation of any new local unit of government through the dividing of existing local governments.

“The amount of taxes that go to administrative costs in this state is excessive,” Cullerton said. “This measure aims to do something about the enormous number of units of lo-

cal government in this state to help cut back on some of those costs.”

Currently, Illinois has approximately 7,000 local units of government, the most of any state. Senate Bill 1800 would extend the moratorium, originally enacted from 2015 through Jan. 1, 2020, on the division of local units of governments into two or more units. The moratorium would be extended through Jan. 1, 2023. However, this measure would allow for new units to be created if two or more local governments are

consolidating.

“We need to encourage some of these small units of government across the state to consolidate to save their residents money on their taxes,” Cullerton said. “Hopefully, this legislation will be the first step to do so.”

The measure passed the Senate Tuesday and now moves to the House for further consideration.

Bensenville Park District Was Awarded a $20,000 Grant to Complete Tree Inventories and Develop a Management Plan for its Urban Forest Bensenville, Illinois (April 21, 2021) - The funds were provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Urban and Community Forestry Core Grant Program, and administered by The Morton Arboretum and the Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI).

“Data collected from the tree inventory will help our team prioritize tree management activities and guide our short and long-term plans involving the protection, pruning, planting and removal of trees. Once completed, the tree inventory will tell us how many trees we have, where they are located, their size, what condition they are in, and our tree species composition. The information will be used to identify opportunities to increase planting and diversity, which will help improve our urban forest.” Joseph Vallez - Executive Director, Bensenville Park District.

The $20,000 grant award, with an additional $13,000 from the Bensenville Park District, will cover the fees associated with the district wide, stem-by-stem tree inventory and urban forestry management plan conducted and created by Great Lakes Urban Forestry Management.

“Urban trees are critical infrastructure for a community, and this funding helps to protect one of its most important resources,” said Lydia Scott, director of CRTI. “Trees clean our air and water, reduce flooding and heat, improve our mental and physical health, and provide important habitat for birds and other wildlife.”

Once the tree inventory has been completed and the management plan developed, it will be available on the Bensenville Park District’s website.

History Museum presents ‘To The Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA’ New touring exhibit makes its Midwest debut from May 14 through Aug. 29

— Charles M. Schulz, 1986 It is difficult to imagine — although some will remember it well — the excitement that the race for the moon invoked more than 50 years ago. As the tumultuous 1960s came to a close, America and the rest of the world waited with great anticipation to see if NASA could achieve President John F. Kennedy’s challenge, put forth in May 1961, of putting a man on the moon by the end of the decade.

But just before man took that first step on the moon, Charlie Brown and Snoopy soared through space with NASA’s Apollo 10 mission in May of 1969. It was a great honor when the crew of Apollo 10 chose to nickname their command and lunar modules Charlie Brown and Snoopy, respectively. The flight of Apollo 10 was an important “dress rehearsal” for the lunar landing that was scheduled for July 1969. Astronauts Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan piloted Snoopy within 50,000 feet of the lunar surface as they scouted the landing area for Apollo 11 while John Young orbited the moon in the command module Charlie Brown.

The historic Apollo 10 mission and the Peanuts characters’ role in NASA’s Manned Flight Safety Awareness program are explored in the exhibition, “To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA.” Now a

touring exhibit from the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, CA, this popular show was recently updated to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1969 moon landing. It will make its Midwest debut at the Elmhurst History Museum, located at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst, from May 14 through August 29.

Snoopy becomes an astronaut Charles Schulz’s involvement with NASA began a year prior to the 1969 flight of Apollo 10 when he was approached by NASA with a request to use Snoopy as their safety mascot.

The Silver Snoopy Award program was instituted to improve the safety record of NASA employees and contractors. It proved to be a huge success with the astronauts and employees and is a much-coveted award in the aerospace industry. Snoopy has been on the job for 50 plus years and continues to this day in his role as

NASA’s safety mascot.

In “To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA,” visitors will follow Snoopy’s voyage to the moon as depicted in the March 1969 Peanuts strip series (besting NASA’s record by a few months) and learn about the Silver Snoopy Award program. The exhibit also features official NASA photographs, and reproductions of Schulz’s original concept drawings of “Snoopy, The Astronaut.” NASA footage of the Apollo 10 mission, including excerpts from the documentary “In the Shadow of the Moon,” will also be on display. Visitors can trace the history of space exploration and the space race through a timeline and see reproductions of NASA safety awareness posters and other memorabilia.

This week, we bring you Violet Dawson.

In November 1992 Violet Dawson received the following correspondence from the White House in Washington D.C.: “Thank you for your commitment to community service. Through your generosity and hard work, you have shown that the tradition of neighbor helping neighbor is alive and well in our country.

Your efforts profoundly influence the life in your community and they are a shining example for us all. Barbara and I join in saluting you and sending our best wishes. God bless you.”

The year before, [Continental Cable] had televised the Elmhurst Garden Club’s beautiful VIP (Violet Is President) Standard Flower Show. It was a gracious tribute to their member, Violet Dawson, and an opportunity for me to meet the lovely woman with the becoming first name.

Violet Herich was born in Chicago in 1918 and graduated from the public school system with honors.

She began a career in banking at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. In 1941 she married James Crawford Dawson. During the war years, while her husband was in the Air Corps, Violet was employed at various jobs in-

cluding work at the Red Cross Directors Office in Wichita Falls, Texas.

After the war, Violet and her husband had four children, James, Susan, Jeff and Diane. In 1956 they came to Elmhurst to visit a relative and decided to check real estate listings while in town. They were shown an historic home on Olive Street called “Cool-na-Creva” (which is Gaelic for “Behind-the-Branches”).

It was just what the Dawsons wanted for the family home!

An interest in gardening groups Once they had moved in, the Welcome Lady came to call. She promoted all the organizations in Elmhurst.

The one club that piqued Violet’s interest was the Elmhurst Newcomers Garden Group. She joined and became involved with gardening and flower shows. She wanted to join the Elmhurst Garden Club, but had to wait two years because the club was at its maximum limit of 250 members. Ironically, it was as President

of the Elmhurst Garden Club years later that Violet Dawson and the City of Elmhurst would gain national and international acclaim.

While her children were school age, Violet became the first woman president of the Hawthorne PTA in 1962 and initiated the Picture Lady Program which spread throughout the school system. In 1965 she and her husband were among the founding members of the Elmhurst Symphony. In 1973 she helped form the Elmhurst Historical Society, serving as Recording Secretary. With an appreciation for antiques and life-long learning, Violet was elected president of Questers, Inc., president of Elmhurst HY-PEO (an international organization promoting education for women) and, served on the Planning Committee which established the College of DuPage. She was a volunteer at Redeemer Lutheran Church and Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, a Camp Fire Leader for many years, and Project Chairman for the Elmhurst Infant Welfare Society. All the while, though, Violet maintained a keen interest and love for gardening.

She was elected president of the Elmhurst Garden Club in 1968 after serving in numerous chairmanships and elected offices over the years.

Violet had a special interest in students as gardeners. Perhaps this was because she had four children of her own. Or perhaps it was because she had fond memories of growing peonies with her father in their backyard as a child. She had a green thumb even as a youngster. So it was not surprising that Violet established Junior Garden Clubs in several Elmhurst schools. This led to her election to the Board of Directors of the Garden Club of Illinois, Inc. as Junior and High School Chairman. Under her direction these young gardeners

participated in the nationally recognized Chicago Flower Show for several years. It wasn’t long before Violet Dawson was elected president of The Garden Club of Illinois, Inc. in 1975. Soon the Illinois Club began receiving many awards, honors, medallions and scholarships, all during Violet’s presidency.

Violet steps up to the national level But Violet also was busy back in Elmhurst. For ten years Violet continued to chair the Elmhurst Flower Show in the Wilder Park Conservatory with the Elmhurst Garden Club and the Elmhurst Park District. She started a Garden Therapy Program.

As an initiative of the Elmhurst Garden Club, a U.S. Constitution Tree, celebrating the 200th year of the U.S. Constitution, was planted along Palmer Drive in 1989. It was planted in memory of Robert T. Palmer, City Manager (1953-1983) and was recorded in the minutes of the Congressional Record by Congressman Henry Hyde. Simultaneously, she was serving in several vice-presidential positions at the national level. Then on May 1, 1991, Violet Dawson was elected President of the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. She would be the first to tell you that her life changed forever!

The National Council represents the largest gardening organization in the world. There are more than 500,000 members in the United States and abroad. As President, Violet Dawson traveled across the country giving inspiring speeches, encouraging innovative projects, setting new goals, judging flower shows and raising money for scholarships.

She suggested youth activities and international junior club pen-pal

programs where students could exchange letters and seeds! Under her personal theme, “It’s Our World To Garden,” she promoted conservation and ecology, and lobbied for legislation. Violet participated in World Environment Day in New York City and recalled, “The day was inspirational, educational, eventful and a once in a life-time experience. As National Council President I found it a distinct honor to be in attendance and to sit in the General Assembly Hall at the United Nations where so many decisions involving the nations of the world are made.”

Violet was personally greeted by Lady Bird Johnson at the LBJ Ranch in Texas in 1992. In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Wildflower Research Center in Texas, Violet presented Lady Bird with a grant to help support the Center. Then on March 12, 1992, at the County Court House in Wheaton, Violet inducted First Lady Barbara Bush as a Life Member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs.

In the spring of 1999, Vi Dawson and her administration were honored at the Life-member Banquet held in Atlanta, Ga. Among the very special dinner guests was Violet Dawson seated right next to President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalyn! Kyle Franklins rushed 23 times for 163 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the Knights’ offense.

Deontae Oatman ran four times for 36 yards and a score. Quarterback Dennis Mandala had a rushing touchdown, while Jadon Mims had a nine-yard rushing touchdown. The Knights scored seven rushing touchdowns.

Mandala completed 8 of 11 passes for 127 yards and one touchdown.

Chauncey Lee caught two passes for 25 yards. Anthony Parille had two catches for 53 yards, while Denzell Gibson had two catches for 15 yards.

The Timothy Christian baseball team opened the first week of the IHSA “summer” season with three wins.

The Trojans took two games from Westmont and also defeated Riverside-Brookfield.

Senior Ben Jones and freshman Casey Folkerts were strong on the mound in the Westmont games, Trojans coach Brian Whartnaby noted. Sophomore Donald Tober went into the sixth inning against Riverside-Brookfield to earn the win.

Jacob Friend pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to notch the save.

The last time the Trojans took the field in 2019, the team finished 6-21 overall and went 2-7 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play. This is Whartnaby’s third season at the helm.

Timothy has four returning starters in Jones (shortstop, pitcher), senior Stephen Kwasigroch (outfield),

senior CJ James (outfield, pitcher) and junior Fletcher Roemmich (infield).

“We only have three seniors, but they all started on varsity as sophomores and have been setting the tone for practices and leading by example,” Whartnaby said.

Key newcomers include Tober (catcher, pitcher), sophomore Ethan Munk (infield), Folkerts (infield-pitcher) and freshman Jake Armstrong (infield, pitcher).

“We have a talented group of underclassmen,” Whartnaby said.

“We will be young this year, but from what I have seen, we have more depth of talent than recent years. We have more arms on the mound than we had two years ago and more power at the plate. I am excited to see how they grow as a team this season. I think this group will put themselves in a good position to be successful. We are looking for a turnaround season in 2021 and something to build upon.”

Timothy’s roster composition includes the three seniors, five juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen.

York boys water polo team starts strong out of gates

Elmhurst Extreme 9U are champions

The Elmhurst Extreme 9U travel team won the Extreme Classic Tournament from April 12 through 18. The team went 3-0 in pool play and beat the Lombard Lightning 14-7 in the championship game.

The boys were aggressive at the plate all week, scoring 69 runs during the tournament. Team members include Grayson Brown, Liam Campbell, Alex Diviacchi, Mason Epstein, Mario Iveljic, Jimmy Kanel, Dominic Landas, Max Padgett, Evan Ponton, Rocco Popo, Jake Setlak, and Carter Spiering.

The team is coached by Brandon Landas with assistant coaches Ken Padgett, Vince Diviacchi, Chris Spiering and Mario Iveljic.

The York boys water polo team was impressive to start the 2021 season, going 4-1 in its first five contests — a beginning punctuated by strong defensive play.

The Dukes defeated Oak Park-River Forest 20-5, Hinsdale Central 202, Morton 15-1 and Conant 17-7.

The only blemish was a close 10-8 contest to Lyons Township. York was 3-1 in West Suburban Conference play to start the season.

“Our team’s defense has been

great this year, which has translated to a strong transition game and more possessions on offense,” York coach Brian Drumm said. “We have some natural scorers, such as Josh Allen Jacob Dunlap and Andrew Hausoul, and they have had more opportunities because of our full team defense.”

Experience is on the Dukes’ side this season, Drumm explained. “We are fortunate to have an experienced group, considering the circumstances

Recent IC Catholic Prep graduate Bella Leslie wanted to head east for college.

Her landing spot ended up being at NCAA Division II Le Moyne College where the former Knights volleyball and soccer standout will continue her volleyball career at the Syracuse, New York school as a libero.

“All of the schools I was looking at were on the East Coast,” Leslie told the Independent last week. “I visited Le Moyne and really liked it. It reminded me of high school because it was a small school, and in a smaller school you will know a lot more faces than if I would have gone to a bigger school. The campus there is really pretty. It sits on a big hill and the scenery around it is great. Everything is pretty close together. They have very nice facilities. The volleyball program has good workout facilities and a nice locker room. I liked how modern it was.”

Leslie plans on studying nursing at Le Moyne. “They have a good nursing program,” she said. “As far as what kind of a nurse I want to be, I’m not quite sure yet.”

Leslie played volleyball and girls soccer at IC Catholic Prep all four years. She was a center-midfielder on the Knights soccer team.

Leslie’s volleyball journey started in the fifth grade, the first year she could play the sport at IC Grade School. She’s been playing club volleyball since seventh grade, most recently with the Chicago Elite group that practices out of Scores in Willow Springs and Montini High School in Lombard.

“I’m really excited to be able to play volleyball in college,” she said. “It gives me something to do.

I feel like I would be so bored without it because it has been such a big part of my life.”

Leslie said she has plenty of memories from IC Catholic Prep’s coach Nancy Kerrigan’s program.

“I loved playing there,” she said.

“I probably enjoyed school volleyball more than club because I love my team and the coaching staff was very supportive on and off the court. It made it a really good environment to be in. Coach (Kerrigan) was great. I have known her for a while. When I was little, I did all the little kids camps, and her daughter was in my brother’s grade at IC.” Leslie said she will miss plenty about IC Catholic Prep. “I will miss how close knit of a community it was,” she said. “I knew everybody at the school. It will be weird going on campus and not knowing all the faces. I’ll miss those close connections with the coaches and teachers. It will be weird for the first year or so.”

Leslie said pandemic life hasn’t been overly exciting, though her club volleyball team has started practicing again. “We have been practicing two or three times a week,” she said. “We are going to be starting tournaments again. Before that I haven’t been doing anything because senior soccer season and the club volleyball season were cancelled. We were supposed to go to a few club volleyball qualifiers in Grand Rapids and Louisville.

This summer, we have some tournaments planned over the next few weekends. They are little tournaments with all of the local clubs.

Nothing large and really local.

Other than that, I have been trying to work out a lot and stay in shape.

I’ve been running a lot, so I got into that. I try and run every day.”

Timothy Christian boys tennis team wins two matches Returning state qualifier Chen part of talented Trojan roster

The Timothy Christian boys tennis team wasted little time making a statement.

The Trojans opened the 2021 season with 6-0 non-conference sweeps of Elk Grove and Fenton. Coach Keith Mills noted the squad did not drop a game at first singles in the two matches.

Junior Winston Chen is back for Timothy. Chen qualified for state in

2019 as a freshman when he played No. 1 singles. He had 15 wins in his debut season.

Key newcomers include a pair of transfers from Hinsdale Central in junior Tommy King and junior Sammy Valeo. King will likely play first singles and some No. 1 doubles, while Valeo will play No. 2 singles and first doubles.

Freshman Brian Berbati is likely to play No. 2 singles. “Brian is an expe-

rienced tournament player who adds to our depth,” Mills said.

Other varsity starters include senior Josh Kiefer, who will play first or second doubles. He played two years on the Timothy junior varsity and is an athletic doubles player, Mills noted.

Freshman Hendrick DeVries will play No. 2 doubles. “Hendrick is a big hitter with tons of potential,” Mills said.

third doubles, as will sophomore Tommy Kunz.

“The top of our lineup will be very strong and match up well with almost all opponents,” Mills said. “The team lacks varsity match experience, but we have had some very competitive practices so far. Our top four players could all play first singles and we will rotate between singles and doubles often to give everyone singles matches. I think the top four are the best I have had a

Mills noted this is the first time he will have three freshmen players on the varsity roster.

“The strength of this team is we have a lot of big hitters,” he said. “We need to work on consistency and improve our serving. Third doubles for us will be a work in progress.”

Mills said teams to beat in the conference include Wheaton Academy and Wheaton St. Francis.
