Residents address Zoning Committee about facility for elderly

Say they don’t oppose elderly or disabled, just the two-story addition

Residents emphasized they were not opposed to the Elmhurst Extended Care (EEC) function of taking care of elderly and disabled people, but were adamantly against a proposed twostory addition that would encroach on the Fremont Ave. residential neighborhood and could decrease property values.

Residents noted that EEC, which has been on Lake St. since 1961, did not have buildings on Fremont.

At a Development, Planning and Zoning (DPZ) Committee meeting on April 10, the attorney for the owner stated that the denial by the City for the 51,000 square-foot addition could be a violation of Federal discrimination laws which protect elderly people.

The Zoning and Planning Commission (ZPC), an advisory group, recently denied the request for an addition by a 5-2 vote.

The DPZ Committee of three aldermen will issue a report either agreeing with the ZPC or disagreeing with the ZPC. The City Council has the final vote. Mayor Steve Morley, who does not usually attend DPZ Committee meetings, noted that aldermen would discuss the request by EEC for an addition at the second meeting in May since the first meeting would be devoted to the installation of newly-elected members.

After hearing testimony from residents as well as the owner and his attorney, Scott Levin (5th Ward), chairman of the DPZ Committee, spoke.

“We take this situation very seriously,”

he said. “We will pick up this request for an addition at the next DPZ meeting in two weeks.”

City Attorney Don Storino, who does not usually attend DPZ meetings, said at the April 10th meeting he did not take issue with anything that was said.

A court reporter recorded all the testimony.

Jay McNichols was one of the residents most affected by the proposed addition, since he displayed a rendering which indicated he and his wife would be looking out his backyard at 12 to 15 windows from the proposed building.

Greg Pellico said EEC wants to put the building between houses on Fremont and does not care about residents. He asked aldermen if they would like to have a two-story building near their houses.

Eileen Orser commented that the proposed building was out of character with the neighborhood.

Theresa McCarthy pointed out that the proposed building would be in the middle of a block, not at the end of a street.

Ken Smallwood stated that the owner and his attorney provided “extremely misleading information.”

“We understand the needs for the business but it should not be on the backs of neighbors,” he said.

“We try to advocate for our residents,” said Love Dave, the owner of EEC. “We are not just operating a money-maker.”

Christina Morrison, an attorney for the owner, said the City rejecting the addition “could be discriminatory.”

Sue mastered all the memorization and passed the test so she could move forward in her job.

Asked what was the best part of the job, she quickly answers.

“The people I work with really is like a family. That part is going to be hard. At least ten people have retired here, that’s the way it is, you’re here until you retire. It’s a comfortable environment and you get a job for life with a pension and benefits, but when you’re young, you don’t usually look that far ahead.

“The people who come to the counter are all really nice and that makes the time fly by. I didn’t really feel like I was working.”

Active indeed — Sue has been skiing for 30 years and taught her children to ski when they were 10 years old.

She also enjoys horseback riding, roller-skating and snowmobiling.

“My son and I went to Yellowstone.

We skied in Montana, then snowmobiled in Yellowstone Park with a stop at Old Faithful geyser.”

Now Sue Pennin is off on her longest vacation ever — retirement. She plans to move to Tucson to be near her daughter and grandchildren. Much as she will enjoy it, she is sure she will miss her friends at the post office, too.

“They really are like a family to me.

I will miss everyone.”

City bids farewell to Healy, Wagner

The following items were passed by consent by the Elmhurst City Council on Monday, April 17: • Diana Riekse, Andy Joseph and Thomas Marcucci were reappointed to the City of Elmhurst/City College Commission for terms to expire April 30, 2019.

• Jackie Tamer and Patty McKernan were reappointed to the Commission on Youth for terms to expire April 30, 2020.

• Maryann Gorski and Trish Hall were reappointed to the Economic Development Commission for terms to expire April 30, 2020.

• Frank Mushow was reappointed to the Zoning & Planning Commission for a term to expire April 30, 2022.

• Two change orders, one for $7,000, a second for $15,944, were approved to Intelligent and Construction Solutions of Chicago for professional engineering services for the north industrial lift station.

• Council approved the purchase of a 2017 trailer-mounted hydro seeder for $73,630.

• The purchase of a Ver-Mac PMC320 RT message board trailer was approved for $30,000.

• York Street Phase I & II Engineering Services from B&M were ap-

proved in the amount of $69,989.

• The installation of a chiller piping system at the police station was approved for an amount not to exceed $50,950.

• The Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s request to hold the Memorial Day Parade was approved.

TC Scholastic Bowl wins State Championship Submitted by Amy Bode TIMOTHY CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL

Who was the protagonist in Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow?

With a tied score, the correct answer would send either Piasa or Timothy Christian Schools to the championship round at the Scholastic Bowl State Tournament. Piasa had control of the question—and didn’t know the answer.

But Timothy Christian senior Daniel Kuiper did.

“Ichabod Crane,” he buzzed in.

That answer sent Timothy Christian Schools to the finals.

“It was surreal,” Coach Carlton Rink said. “Statistically we should have lost that match. The questions were hard and obscure, things that I didn’t even know. It didn’t look good.”

Scholastic Bowl is like Jeopardy, but played as a team. Two teams of five players face-off while the moderator reads questions on a wide variety of academic subjects that cover everything from math, literature, art, and geography.

Timothy’s team included Daniel Kuiper, Jacob Houseman, Thomas Jenkins, Trevor Hoogendoorn, Seth Buikema, Will DeMey, Anna Miller, Carl Miller, Nathaniel Yurschak, and Nick Alvarez. The team would often gather after school and scrimmage against each other like a real match.

But just as important as building on their knowledge was gaining confidence to buzz in before the competition did.

“Some kids are more aggressive about buzzing in,” Coach Rink said.

“But you have to be able to take some chances. Otherwise the other team will buzz in before you.”

Over time, Daniel, who specialized in literature and mythology, gained the confidence to take calculated risks, often turning the tide of the match. His educated guesses were often gleaned from facts that he retained from seemingly random places. Once, while waiting for his calculus class to start, he noticed notes on the board from the advanced math class that explained Eulerian paths and Hamiltonian paths.

“A question came up in a match that was very similar to what I had remembered seeing on the board,” Daniel said. “So I just guessed Hamiltonian, and I was right!”

It’s Daniel’s confidence in his ability to take an educated guess and his dedication to continue learning that helped earn him the title First Team All-State. It was an honor that was given to only the top 10 students from schools in the 1A class division.

“I have a desire to pursue knowledge,” he said. “I haven’t read nearly all the books that I’d like to.

There’s way too much to read in a lifetime.”

It’s this desire to learn, that helped propel Timothy Christian Schools to its first Scholastic Bowl State Championship title.

“I sensed at the beginning of last year that they had the ability to pull off a State Championship,” the coach said. “But I also know that anything could have happened. We could have lost that match to Piasa.”

Timothy went on to the final match against Williamsville. There are only 24 questions in a match, but by the 20th question, Coach Rink knew his team had clinched the State Title.

“I knew there weren’t enough points left for Williamsville to win,” he said.

“It was hard to contain ourselves.

The emotions started coming up, but I knew I had to be respectful of the other team.”

It’s this respect that Mr. Rink tried to instill in his team throughout the season.

Before the final match he led the team in devotions based on Matthew 6:21.

“I wanted the team to treasure the journey and the relationships,” Coach Rink said. “No matter the outcome, I want them to celebrate the gifts that God has given them.”

Daniel is proud of ending his Scholastic Bowl career at Timothy Christian Schools as a State Champion.

But as he prepares to graduate and begin his freshman year at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, it’s not the trophy or the title that he is focused on. It’s what Coach Rink told them before the match: Winning isn’t everything.

“It’s not about having glory for ourselves,” Daniel said. “We can be proud of our achievement, but it’s more important how we interact with teammates and other people. It’s more important to give glory to God than having treasures here on earth.”

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

April 12 A victim in the 200 block of E. Niagara Ave. told police that she may have heard a suspicious noise at approximately 12:15 a.m., but did not investigate the noise. She later arrived home at 3:15 p.m. and discovered the center living room window broken and a rock beneath a table, near the window.

April 3 Criminal defacement was reported at a high school in the 300 block of W. St. Charles at around 10:08 a.m. A complainant told police that someone wrote graffiti on the desk where he was seated. The suspect related he was bored after finishing a test and started to draw. The suspect was cited and released.

Feb. 1 A reporting officer received information that a juvenile had sent an explicit photo of themselves to another juvenile who then redistributed the image in the 100 block of E. First at around 10:29 a.m. An investigation is pending.

April 9 Police said that subsequent to a report for a domestic between a victim and the suspect in the 400 block of E. Court at around 8:17 p.m., the suspect was putting the victim’s personal property outside of the house. The victim said the suspect shoved him. There were no visible signs of injuries on the victim and no complaints to be signed.

April 9 A victim in the 700 block of N. Parker told police at around 4:52 p.m. that she has been receiving harassing text messages from her ex-husband. A message was left with the suspect advising him not to contact the victim.

April 8 A victim at an entertainment center in the 300 block of W. Lake St. told police at around 12:02 p.m. that he noticed an unknown male Hispanic juvenile eating the victim’s food from his cubby. The victim asked him to stop and threw water at him.

The suspect then allegedly punched victim in the eye. The victim went to hospital for treatment and the suspect has not yet been identified.

April 7 Police said that during a call for a reported battery that had occurred in the 600 block of S. Cambridge at around 6:15 p.m., officers located the two suspects. There reportedly was a road rage incident just prior where both drivers exited their vehicles and argued, with one hitting the other after he had approached him aggressively. Neither suspect wanted to press charges.

April 9 Yarnell M. White, 28, of Maywood, was charged with DUI, possession of open alcohol, driving while license suspended, no insurance and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 3:41 a.m. According to police, a juvenile passenger in the vehicle was found to be in possession of suspected Ecstasy and cannabis, and in violation of curfew. The juvenile was released without charged pending lab results.

April 8 • Kathleen Calderone, 64, of Elmhurst, was charged with felony aggravated DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Oak and North at around 12:27 a.m.

• Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 3:15 a.m., Ronal Perez-Gomez, 20, of Wood Dale, had an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath and blood-shot and glassy eyes. The suspect was charged with illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor, driving while license suspended and improper lane usage.

• Daniel Stelter, 27, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, no insurance and an expired registration subsequent to a traffic stop near Vallette and Arlington at around 12:26 a.m.

April 7 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and West at around 12:08 a.m., a strong odor of burnt cannabis was coming from the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect, Gabriela Alcaraz, 22, of Chicago, displayed physical indicators of impairment and was placed under arrest, according to police. The suspect was charged with DUI drugs, unlawful possession of cannabis, no valid driver’s license, no insurance and failure to yield turning left.

April 8 While on patrol at around 1:18 a.m., an officer observed the driver of a listed vehicle disobey a red light at Church Road and Grand Avenue. The officer eventually caught up to the vehicle in the area of westbound North Avenue and Villa Avenue and noticed there were no registration plates displayed on the vehicle.

An attempt was made to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, at which time the driver failed to yield and fled at a high rate of speed west-

April 12 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Holly at around 12:16 a.m., Kevin Cahill, 25, of Elmwood Park, provided a false name and also was found to be wanted out of DuPage County. He was charged with obstructing identification and no seat belt. Yamilex Ramirez-Hermida, 20, of Bellwood, was in possession of a stun gun, according to police. She was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and no seat belt. Police said Ricky Padro, 54, of Wheaton, was in possession of drug paraphernalia and cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

April 12 Ronald Burton, 40, of Kalamazoo, Mich., was charged with possession of cannabis. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious vehicle parked in the 400 block of E. Schiller at around 12:14 a.m., Burton was located, found to be in possession of cannabis and also was found to be wanted on a warrant out of DuPage County.

April 9 Police said officers responded for the report of a fight in the 500 block of S. York at around 3:45 p.m. Floria Soto, 25, of Willowbrook, was located and allegedly gave a false name. She also was in possession of Xanax® and cannabis, according to police. She was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and obstructing identification.

April 7 Christopher Parker, 27, of Chicago, was issued citations by police for possession of cannabis and illegally tinted windows near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 4:32 p.m.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, an officer detected an odor of burnt cannabis coming from the inside of the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, a plastic bag containing six smaller baggies of cannabis was located, according to police.

April 6 • Zachary Coyle, 22, of Westmont, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding near St. Charles and Fair at around 12:54 a.m.

• Arthur Gniatczyk, 19, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia in the 100 block of N. Highland at around 10:58 p.m.

• A suspect’s mother reported that her son was missing from class at a local high school yesterday. He was then last seen yesterday April 5 at 3:30 p.m. An officer located both her son and another suspect hiding in a laundry area at an apartment complex. Both were were transported to the police department where cannabis and E-cigarette equipment were recovered. The suspects were charged with truancy, possession of tobacco products

Court told police at around 10:30 a.m. after receiving a letter in the mail that she had been sent to collections regarding a Comcast Cable bill, she learned a fraudulent Comcast Cable account was opened in her name. Victim wished to make a matter of record report only at this time.

• A complainant at a food store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 told police at around 5:36 p.m. that she recognized a suspect from prior incidents where he would conceal items and leave the store without paying for those concealed items. On the above date, the complainant observed the same suspect conceal items. He was stopped at the front door, claimed he did not know the items were there and was issued a trespass notice.

April 11-April 12 • A victim in the 300 block of E. May St. told police at around 7:06 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway overnight. Papers were strewn about and the center console was ajar.

Loose change was missing. The vehicle was processed for evidence.

• A complainant in the 300 block of S. Berkley Ave. told police at around 8:07 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked work vehicle sitting in his driveway. The vehicle was processed for evidence. A laptop was entered into LEADS as stolen.

April 11 Theft was reported at a high school in the 300 block of W. St. Charles at around 6:35 p.m. While at the school, a victim walked away from her purse to use the restroom. When she came back, her purse was gone.

April 10 A victim at a supermarket in the 900 block of S. York told police that while shopping at around 10:49 a.m., he dropped his wallet which contained several credit cards and $2,245 in cash. A suspect found the wallet and returned it to the victim. Missing from the wallet was the $2,245 in cash. The suspect was located and admitted to taking the money. The money was returned to the victim who did not wish to sign complaints.

April 9 A victim in the 100 block of E. Schiller St. told police at around 4:18 p.m. that she discovered three unauthorized transactions had been made using her debit card.

April 8 • Erica Abate, 30, of Lombard, was charged with attempted identity theft and obstructing identification in the 100 block of E. Brush Hill at around 11:56 p.m. A victim came to the Police Department to report someone was using her personal identification information to

• Officers responded to a call for a retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 6:37 p.m.

The loss prevention reported a female suspect selected merchandise and concealed it in a fitting room. Security stopped the female after exiting the store but she refused to return to the security office. The suspect was last seen northbound on Route 83 in a brown Volkswagen Jetta. An investigation is pending.

• An officer was called to a car dealership in the 700 block of W. Grand Ave. at around 9:06 a.m. for a report of a burglary to a vehicle. The victim advised his truck was parked behind the dealership over the weekend. Pry marks were found on the driver’s side door and the passenger side window was shattered. Items were moved around on the interior, but nothing was taken.

April 7 Police said that while an officer was on patrol at a pub in the 100

block of N. Addison at around 12:06 a.m., the bouncer gave the officer what he believed to be a fraudulent ID card for a suspect whom he turned away from the bar earlier in the evening. An investigation is pending.

April 6 A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed cash from his unlocked gym locker at a high school in the 300 block of W. St. Charles at around 3:19 p.m.

April 4-April 7 An officer responded to a fraud report in the 200 block of N. Illinois St. The victim told police that “Life Lock” notified him that his Social Security number was being used by an unknown suspect in an attempt to open credit cards at different locations between the above dates. The victim related that he is unaware if any credit cards were opened.

April 5 A victim in the 600 block of Cedar told police at around 6:21 p.m. that an unknown suspect used his wife’s information and forged her signature withdrawing cash from his savings account. The transaction occurred in Minnesota and the bank stated that the suspect had an ID with his wife’s name on it. An investigation is pending.

March 29-April 3 A victim in the 700 block of Chatham told police at around 1:27 p.m. that an unknown suspect opened several credit card accounts using his personal information between the above dates. The victim has put a stop on all accounts.

March 23 A victim in the 600 block of S. Hawthorne told police at around 2:53 p.m. she received a phone call from a loan company that a homeowner’s loan was opened in her name. She

was also notified of two bank accounts that were opened using her name and Social Security number.

The victim will sign complaints if the suspect is identified.

March 10 Police said an unknown suspect at a bank in the 1100 block of S. York Road attempted to cash a fraudulent check using information from a local supply company at around 3:16 p.m.

The transaction was denied. The suspect then exited the bank leaving the check and an Illinois identification card behind.

Dec. 2, 2016 An officer responded to an identity theft report in the 800 block of S. Cadwell at around 4:32 p.m. A victim told police that while checking her credit score, she noticed she had a Comcast account submitted to collections.

She had not opened any Comcast accounts and called them to inquire about this situation. Comcast advised the account was opened in her name using her Social Security number and a Chicago address.

April 10 Police said that subsequent to a call for a violation of order of protection in progress in the 200 block of N. York at around 3:23 p.m., the victim reports his GPS monitoring system was activated. The victim has an order of protection against the suspect and he believes it may have been coincidental that the suspect was in the area where the victim was dining. The victim did not see the suspect while in the area of the activation.

The purge: Cleaning out the excess clutter

My husband and I recently took on the task of refinishing the wood floors in three rooms that constitute our downstairs living areas – family room, dining room and miscellaneous room. (We’re not sure what to call it. Some days it’s the sunroom, other days the napping room. Right now, if I am being honest, it is the gaming room.)

I digress. Aside from being a ton of work (we were sore in places we didn’t even know we had) the big floor plan necessitated removing everything (and I mean everything) from the three spaces. In the process I was reminded of one semi-embarrassing truth (aside from the fact we have an entire room dedicated to gaming): We’ve got a lot of stuff.

perfect working order even though it’s old, obsolete and/or you haven’t used it since the last millennium. These items sit in their respective spots on the shelf or floor or cupboard and collect dust.

Emptying the rooms was liberating (and backbreaking). The space felt pure without all the stuff.

During the duration of our project, I came to value the empty purity. I didn’t want to refill our new rooms with old clutter and vowed any item returning post-project had to earn its spot.

I scrutinized knick-knacks

and whatnots, seeing them with new, critical eyes. How were the fake apples in a bowl benefiting the dining room? Had the cinnamon-scented pinecones from October outworn their welcome, not to mention fragrance? An empty frame lying atop the piano – what was its purpose? We found a container for housing baby fish from back when we bred guppies circa 2007. Removing it was a no-brainer.

All the poster boards we’ve ever owned with all the school projects from my entire family’s history were stored behind a desk. For what, I don’t know. I guess when you put a lot of work into a poster board it’s difficult to rid yourself of it. Not any more. Goodbye Star of the Week poster from 2005. Be gone!

We had a collection of at least 200 CDs that we hadn’t listened to in at least a decade. To be hon-

est, I don’t even know if we have a CD player anymore. They were placed in a box and relegated to the basement. This put them one step ahead of the pseudo fruit and scentless pinecones, which were exiled to the garbage.

Also expelled were dust bunnies too numerous to count. I swear those things self-multiply. The wood refinishing project stirred up some dust, but we were plentiful in that department even before the job began. It feels good to know we are bunny-free. No, it feels great.

Then there were the books. I love books, but having hundreds of children’s early reader books when you haven’t had an early reader for nearly a decade sort of seems absurd, or at the very least a waste of shelf space. The books need new sets of emerging reader hands to hold them and put them to work again. Until then, they sit

in the basement alongside the CDs and two big tubs of VHS tapes that hold more nostalgic value than actual worth.

Not everything was banished.

Items that made the cut included the furniture, TV, family photos, a life-size ceramic iguana (made by our son-in-law) and a dish full of jelly beans, because pinecones may be out of season, but jelly beans are not. The cats get to stay.

As do my husband and kids.

I’d never consider banishing them – even if they didn’t help move all the heavy furniture.

Action For a Better Tomorrow group forms What started in mid-November as a social gathering of 20 Elmhurst residents concerned about the future has turned into an organized group of nearly 700 (and growing) progressive political advocates determined to make a difference.

Action for a Better Tomorrow-Elmhurst offers a forum for discussion and strategizing on politics and policy, with the goal of improving our community, state and nation.

Kirsten Powers, an Elmhurst resident with experience in planning, development, fundraising and business development, saw that this was a unique moment in time.

“At that first meeting, you could feel the palpable emotions and a desire to act,” she said. “We talked about standing up for what we believe this country was founded on: a democracy that guarantees rights and freedoms for all people, as well as a better future … a better tomorrow … rather than returning to a past of neglected schools, the environment, healthcare and economic opportunity.”

Recognizing from campaign season which issues would come under attack, ABT-Elmhurst volunteers stepped up in the first month to form a 12-person steering committee. In less than four months, the organiza-

tion has grown to 700 members and nine committees focusing on issues important to the group. The state organization of Action for a Better Tomorrow – a 501c4 that is 35,000 members strong -- provides advocacy tools to 20 Illinois chapters, from contact lists of local elected representatives to training for members who are learning how to be politically active for the first time.

“One of the goals of ABT is to inspire and educate more progressives to run for office at all levels, from school board and township offices to state positions,” said Powers. “We’re also reaching out to the next generation, tomorrow’s leaders and voters, to get them actively engaged in politics and policy.”

In December, ABT-Elmhurst rallied to encourage District 205 administrators to publicly promote inclusion, respect and safety in all schools; participated in letter-writing campaigns advocating for issues jeopardized by the Trump administration; led phone campaigns asking for transparency in the new administration; and wrote letters of support to area mosques and the Muslim community.

“In response to one of my letters, I received a lovely note back,” says Patricia Motto, ABT-Elmhurst

steering committee member. “Then a few weeks later, two men and a very sweet boy showed up at my door with a thank you note, a box of chocolates and an invitation to their mosque’s open house. It was such a lovely gesture, and was one of those moments that can restore faith.”

ABT-Elmhurst’s committees have begun to dig into issues such as healthcare, civil rights, education and the environment. Members of the Immigration and Refugees Committee rushed to O’Hare Airport in the first days of the administration’s travel ban to participate in civil protest, offer legal assistance to those in need, and organize Know Your Rights training for Latino communities. ABT hosted a representative from Muslim Advocates to discuss discrimination toward the Muslim community and ways to combat hate, and a director from Erie Neighborhood House to discuss immigration and deportation issues. Last month, the Political Arena Committee hosted a member meeting with Greg Bales, community outreach coordinator for Senator Dick Durbin, who spoke about effective political engagement.

At each monthly meeting, members are encouraged to bring donations for a designated non-profit.

PADS (clothing and personal care items), Erie Neighborhood House preschool (books) and the ACLU. Future plans for ABT-Elmhurst include meeting with U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (D-IL 5th District); organizing groups to attend the March for Science and People’s Climate March; media training; speakers on environmental, LGBTQ, violence prevention and media topics; and enlisting volunteers to work as registrars and precinct chairs to Get Out the Vote in 2017 and 2018.

Regardless of politics or party, ABT encourages citizens to: • Learn the issues – locally, at the state level and nationally. To do so, seek out non-partisan, unbiased, independent news sources.

• Get involved. Pick an issue that resonates with you – from education and LGBTQ issues to disabilities and wealth inequality – and find an organization that can direct you to further action.

• Know your voice counts. Roughly 43 percent of eligible voters sat out the 2016 presidential election. It is estimated that a half million people attended the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. More than 400,000 people donated to Planned Parenthood in the three months following the election. Whether you choose to

march, sign petitions, call or write elected officials, or vote, know that your efforts count.

Kerri Murray, the president of ShelterBox USA, will be the keynote speaker for the Elmhurst Rotary Club’s April 29 fundraiser.

ShelterBox is the Spotlight Charity for the gala event at the Hyatt Lodge on McDonald’s Oak Brook Campus.

Murray will explain how ShelterBox hand-delivers aid to families devastated by conflict or natural Kerri Murray disaster to give them safe shelter and the tools to rebuild communities.

Disaster relief is delivered through a global network of supporters, staff and volunteers that make it possible

One injured in house fire on Park St. Home now uninhabitable; incident under investigation

According to a release issued by Police Chief Thomas K. Freeman, there was a structure fire in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 16 on E. Park St. At approximately 2:49 a.m., the Elmhurst Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire in the area of Huntington Lane and Park

Street. The confirmed address was in the 400 block of East Park Street.

Fire companies arrived on the scene and found a split level single-family home with fire and smoke showing.

Four people resided in the home at the time of the fire. All four people evacuated the home; however, one adult male suffered burns to approximately 40% of his body. He was treated at the scene by paramedics and transported to Loyola Hospital’s burn unit.

Freeman said the home is uninhabitable and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Police seek public’s help finding missing young man On Saturday morning, April 14, the Independent received the following release from the Elmhurst Police Department, issued by Police Chief Michael Ruth: Elmhurst Police are investigating a missing endangered person from the 800 block of North Indiana.

At 11:08 p.m. on April 14, 2017, family members of Justin Antony reported him missing to the Elmhurst Police Department.

Justin Antony is described as: a M/W, Middle Eastern descent, 24 years old, approximately 5’06” tall, 150 lbs, short brown hair described as buzz cut, wearing a yellow hoodie and blue jeans.

Elmhurst College receives $750,000 for students to study abroad Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of an Elmhurst College alumna, more Elmhurst College students than ever before will now have the opportunity to study abroad.

The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, has pledged $750,000 to support Honors Program students with demonstrated financial need who want to study abroad. The gift represents the largest ever given to

Elmhurst College for such scholarships.

“This amazingly generous scholarship fund will provide the opportunity of a lifetime for many students who otherwise would never be able to access the transformative experience of study abroad,” said Mary Kay Mulvaney, director of the Honors Program and an English professor at Elmhurst College.

The gift is structured to support today’s students studying abroad while simultaneously building an endowment for future students. Among Elmhurst College students who graduated last year, approximately 20 percent had studied abroad during their time at the College. More than half of Honors Program graduates studied abroad.

For many, the experience marked

the first time they had ever traveled overseas. Students receiving scholarships could use the funds either for one of the College’s January Term courses or for a full semester abroad.

The donor, a longtime supporter of Elmhurst College, wanted to do more to expand opportunities for students to study abroad, and significantly increased her investment to the international travel program.

“Fully realizing the immeasurable effect of studying abroad, I wanted to make a lasting impact and encourage students to explore cultural differences, develop a global perspective and participate in this wonderful, life-altering experience,” the donor said.

“We are deeply grateful for this donor’s generosity,” said President Troy D. VanAken.

Raja leads bipartisan coalition to urge Federal agency to continue western access O’Hare project would create 65,000 permanent jobs, reduce congestion

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi last week sent a letter co-signed by 21 community leaders urging the U.S. Surface Transportation Board to approve the Tollways’ petition to allow continued construction of the Elgin O’Hare Western Access Project.

Among the signatures was DuPage

County Chairman Dan Cronin.

Rep. Krishnamoorthi began circulating the letter after his jobs summit on Tuesday, April 11, which focused on the project’s huge economic benefits. The Illinois Governor’s Advisory Council estimates that approximately 65,000 permanent jobs will

be created through completion of the project by 2040, in addition to other benefits such as reduced traffic congestion in communities surrounding the airport.

The letter read as follows: “We write to express our serious concern regarding the matter referred to above, currently before the Surface Transportation Board and brought by the Illinois Toll Highway Authority (“Tollway”). In its petition, the Tollway seeks declaratory judgment that exercise of state law eminent domain authority to acquire permanent and temporary easements for the construction of five bridges over railroad tracks in the vicinity of O’Hare International Airport (“O’Hare”) is not preempted by the Interstate Commerce Commission Termination Act, 49 U.S.C. ss 10101 et seq.

“The specific subject of the Tollway’s petition, the Western Access Interchange, is an integral component of the broader Elgin O’Hare Western Access Project (“EOWA”),

and is part of the O’Hare Modernization Plan (“OMP”). The EOWA and OMP (which includes construction of a new terminal requiring a western entry point into O’Hare) are projected to greatly improve freight and passenger access to the airport by providing western access to O’Hare, and provide other transportation benefits for passenger and freight transportation in and around the Chicago area. Additionally, the Illinois Governor’s Advisory Council estimates that approximately 65,000 permanent jobs will be created by completion of EOWA by 2040, nearly seventy percent of which would locate in the communities west of O’Hare.

She goes behind the scenes to deconstruct the groundbreaking creation of comedians Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld.

Armstrong is the TV columnist for BBC Culture and a former writer for Entertainment Weekly. She also has written a cultural history of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and is working on a book about the hit HBO series Sex and the City.

GreenMan presents ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ Small cast brings Dickens classic to life

GreenMan Theatre’s upcoming production of A Tale of Two Cities will challenge a small ensemble of ten actors to bring Charles Dickens’ epic novel of romance and revolution to life on stage this spring.

A Tale of Two Cities runs three weekends at the First United Methodist Church, 232 S. York St., Elmhurst. The production opens Friday, May 5 and closes May 21. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $17 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, Walsh’s adaptation focuses on the romantic triangle of Lucie Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton. For many of the

actors, bringing these Dickens characters to life is a thrilling and challenging experience. The ensemble of ten must play multiple characters throughout the show, also doubling as minor characters and revolutionaries to help bring the story to life for the audience.

GreenMan Theatre Artistic Director David Soria directs the production. Also appearing in the cast are Stephen Bryant as Darnay, Peter Piane as Doctor Manette, and Sally Roberts as Miss Pross. Toria Hollyn plays a hapless Seamstress, caught up in the revolution. The revolutionaries are led by Ernest Defarge, played by Bill Boggs. In a dual role, Jim Bruner plays the aristocrat Marquis St. Evermonde and the spy John Barsad.

Behind the scenes, Chuck Erickson is the assistant director; Rich Geiger and Jim Ocasek are designing sets and lights. Julane Sullivan is the costumer, and Becca Easley is the sound designer. Bruce Worthel is the fight choreographer for the show.

Democratic Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois convened a Town Hall on Sunday, April 9 in DuPage County where he answered questions from suburban constituents on topics that included health care, Syria and other foreign policy matters, immigration, student loans, gun safety and campaign finance law.

Krishnamoorthi, who represents Illinois’ 8th District, was joined at the Town Hall by representatives from five progressive organizations: Planned Parenthood, Sierra Club, ACLU, Equality Illinois and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and

Refugee Rights.

“I applaud the constituents of the west and northwest Chicago suburbs that took time out from their weekend to engage on civic issues and learn more about progressive organizations that are working every day to stand up for the rights of all citizens,” he said.

• Grants available for children’s health treatments UnitedHealthcare’s Children’s Foundation (UHCCF) is now seeking applications for medical grants for children’s health.

Illinois families in need of financial assistance for child medical care costs are encouraged to apply.

Since 2013, UHCCF has awarded more than 225 grants and qualifying families can receive up to $5,000 per grant with a lifetime maximum of $10,000 per child. Since 2007, UHCCF has awarded more than 13,000 grants valued at over $35 million to children and their families across the United States, and aims to surpass 20,000 grants by Jan. 1, 2020. It is ideal for treatments, services and equipment that is not covered, or not fully covered, by their commercial health insurance plan.

To be eligible for a grant, a child must be 16 years of age or younger. Families must meet economic guidelines, reside in the United States and have a commercial health insurance plan. Grants are available for medical expenses families have incurred 60 days prior to the date of application as well as for ongoing and future medical needs. • Raja pushes for suburban infrastructure project, western access to O’Hare Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi today hosted a jobs summit on the economic impact of developing western access to O’Hare International Airport at a bipartisan gathering of key stakeholders, including government, business and labor leaders. Speakers

included Illinois State Toll Highway Authority Board Chairman Bob Schillerstrom, DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, and Marc Poulos, executive director of the Foundation for Fair Contracting (FFC) and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150. As part of the jobs summit, Rep. Krishnamoorthi circulated a letter to the U.S. Surface Transportation Board to urge support of economic development by allowing the Western Access to O’Hare project to proceed.

“I’m glad we could bring together leaders from across the community to discuss the economic benefits of this project and the need to see it completed,” said Krishnamoorthi. “Simply put, the Elgin O’Hare Western Access Project will create jobs. This is one of the best investments we can make for our community to strengthen our economy, our infrastructure, and our entire transportation system. Western access to O’Hare will also ease traffic for the surrounding communities and allow O’Hare to become the 21st century airport we all need.”

Terra Vista hosts educational seminar on Alzheimer’s, dementia Terra Vista of Oakbrook Terrace will be hosting its free monthly educational seminar on Alzheimer’s-dementia. This month’s session is entitled “Alzheimer’s Activities to Stay Engaged: Adding Fun and Meaning to Life” on Wednesday, April 19 at 2 p.m., at 1635 S. Ardmore Ave, Oakbrook Terrace. The presenter will be Terra Vista’s Alzheimer’s expert & certified dementia trainer Natalie McFarland, BSN, RN. Natalie will explain why activities are beneficial to maintain and enhance cognition and give ideas for various activities that benefit someone with memory loss. Music professor named Fulbright Scholar Harbold to spend four months at Christian College in India

Elmhurst College music professor Mark Harbold recently was selected to receive a Fulbright-Nehru U.S. Scholar Award, which will enable him to spend four months teaching and collaborating with faculty at Madras Christian College in Chennai, India.

“I’m very deeply touched to have received this honor,” he said. “I have received such extraordinary hospitality in India over the years and my hosts have provided so many rich experiences for me, I’m looking forward to this as a way of paying them back.”

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government, and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.

Professor Harbold’s Fulbright

project, titled Collaboration in Teaching and Learning Western Music in South India, perfectly melds Harbold’s professional and personal interests. He has had a lifelong fascination with India and “an abiding love” for Indian classical music. Professor Harbold has been visiting India regularly since 2005, partnering with other Elmhurst faculty members to offer January Term courses on the peoples, religions, music and art of India. Harbold will begin his Fulbright project in December.

“We are thrilled for Mark and congratulate him on receiving a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award,” said Elmhurst College President Troy D. VanAken. “This prestigious award is not only a wonderful and well-deserved opportunity for him, but also another feather in the cap of Elmhurst College and the work of our faculty.”

New courses, ------- Explore ------packages Nature's Playground for golf in Michigan

Michigan’s reputation as one of the top golf destinations in the country continues strong in 2017 with multiple new golf course developments opening for the first time in years and existing destinations making significant investments in their products and packages for golfers nationwide.

“With our championship courses and top notch destinations, Michigan is consistently named among the best places in the country for golf,” said Dave Lorenz, Vice President of Travel Michigan, part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. “As courses and destinations within the industry continue to make new investments, Michigan continues to be a destination of choice that offers worldclass golf products and experiences that travelers come to expect.”

Leading the way is a truly unique and one of a kind 18-hole reversible golf course designed by Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design, which opens to the public at Forest Dunes in Roscommon this spring, after a limited launch in 2016. The Loop is an innovative, walking-only experience with two different layouts that alternate directions on a daily basis so golfers can have a distinct experience.

A second Renaissance Golf Design project opening this spring is the highly-anticipated Stoatin Brae course, which is the sixth golf course for Augusta’s Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort.

As part of Southwest Michigan’s largest and oldest golf destination, Stoatin Brae is a dramatic departure from Gull Lake’s other five courses. Third-generation owner Jon Scott worked with Renaissance Golf Design architects to create a championship-caliber, 18-hole, par-71 golf course that stretches more than 6,800 yards.

The third course at Island Resort and Casino in Escanaba will open this fall. Sage Run was designed

by Michigan-based architect Paul Albanese and features mostly hardwoods with golf holes that run up and around a geographical formation known as a drumlin, as well as a rugged, rolling terrain that is set off by earth tones, browns and tans. Albanese makes some comparisons to Royal County Down, a Northern Ireland golf club that is rated among the finest in the world.

Finally, Arcadia Bluffs, one of the premier courses in the country located on the shores of Lake Michigan near Frankfurt, has announced it will also develop a new golf course.

Construction of the South Course at Acadia Bluffs is scheduled to begin this spring, with completion anticipated for summer 2018.

The 310-acre site is located approximately 1.5 miles South of Arcadia Bluffs, directly off of M-22.

Jeep drivers will show their pride in a celebration that crosses Michigan’s most iconic landmark - the Mackinac Bridge. Saturday takes participants to Drummond Island so you can do some sight-seeing and get the full “Up North Experience”. Aurora foot fondler gets six years DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that an Aurora man has been sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for

touching a woman’s feet while at the Warrenville Public Library and on another occasion at the North Central College Library. Omar Carlton, 45 of 1040 5th Avenue, appeared in court this afternoon in front of Judge Daniel Guerin who imposed the sentence.

On April 20, 2016, a woman was working in a desk cubicle at the

Warrenville Public Library. While working, the woman felt something brush up against her feet several times.

The woman immediately told the library staff what happened to her.

Library staff contacted the Warrenville Police Department whom, after conducting a thorough investigation into the matter, identified Carlton

as a suspect. On April 27, 2016, a $100,000 arrest warrant was issued for Carlton. On May 4, 2016, Carlton was apprehended by the Warrenville Police Department. At that time Carlton was out on bond facing similar charges in relation to an event that took place at the North Central College library. He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail

since that time. On October 28, 2016, Omar entered a blind plea of guilty to two counts of Aggravated Battery in a Public Place, a Class 3 Felony.

Carlton was sentenced to three years for each count. The sentences will be served consecutively. He will be required to serve 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

York girls track team competes at HomewoodFlossmoor invitational

Frosh-soph squad wins WSC Silver indoor conference title

The York girls track team recently competed at the Homewood Flossmoor invitational.

In the 3,200 run (Division 2), Abby Ross was fourth for the Dukes in a time of 13:07.02.

York took third in the 3,200 relay (Division 2) with a time of 10:30.08.

The Dukes were seventh in the 400 relay (Division 2) with a time of 53.84.

Anna Morley was sixth in the 3,200 run (Division 1) with a time of 12:54.27. Alexa Menolascino was 10th in the 100 hurdles (Division 2) with a time of 19.16.

Emma Kern was third in the 800 run (Division 2) with a time of 2:30.92. Julie Biggins was ninth in the 800 run (Division 1) with a time of 2:32.28.

York took 10th in the 800 relay (Division 2) with a time of 1:58.42.

Marissa Chavez was fourth in the 400 run (Division 2) with a time of 1:03.50.

Molly Evans was 11th in the 300 hurdles (Division 1) with a time of 54.82. Francesca Mordini was second in the 1,600 run (Division 2) with a time of 5:46.33. Sarah May was third in the 1,600 run (Division 1) with a time of 5:30.11.

York was sixth in the 1,600 relay (Division 2) at 4:28.66. Emily Wiederrecht tied for sixth in the high jump (Division 2) at 4-6. Zoe Clark tied for seventh in the long jump (Division 2) at 14-9.

As a team, York took ninth in Division 2 with 20.125 points.

IC Catholic Prep baseball team takes two games Knights close out busy week 2-3

The IC Catholic Prep baseball team kept itself plenty busy with five games last week.

The Knights opened the week with a 4-3 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division loss to Wheaton Academy.

IC Catholic Prep led 3-1 after four innings, but Wheaton came back to score three runs in the sixth inning.

Trey Morris, Brendan Russ, Austin Reed, John Hoffman, CJ West and Matt Sutton each had a hit. Reed, Hoffman and West scored a run each, while Sutton drove in two runs. Reed had a double and stole two bases.

Hoffman and West each had a stolen base.

Russ was the losing pitcher. He allowed six hits and struck out four over six innings.

The Knights came right back the next day and earned a 2-1 win over Wheaton Academy in Elmhurst. IC Catholic Prep trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first and scored two runs in their half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead, which would hold for the rest of the game. Both teams had six hits.

Morris had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for the Knights. Reed had a run scored and a hit. West had an RBI. Hoffman went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Christopher Slowinski had a hit. Morris and Reed each stole a base.

Reed threw a six-hit complete game. He allowed only the one earned run and struck out seven to pick up the win.

The Knights then won a MSC crossover game by a 3-0 count against Guerin Prep in a game played at Triton College.

The Knights had eight hits and took a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

Sutton had a hit and a run scored.

Morris went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Reed went 1-for-3 with an RBI. West had a hit, as did Joey Salvi, who also drove in two runs. Slowinski added a hit of his own. Salvi and West each had a double. Reed and Sutton each had a stolen base.

West was the winning pitcher. He went the first six innings and scattered three hits, while striking out

Emaan Mohsin was fourth in the 55 hurdles (F-S) with a time of 10.17, while Abby Moriarty was sixth at 11.04.

Madison Park took eighth in the 55 dash at 7.88. Jessica Dryden was seventh in the 55 dash at the frosh-soph level with a time of 8.09.

Katherine Tomaska was seventh in the 800 at 2:30.75, while Mordini was eighth at 2:31.09. Kern was second in the 800 at the frosh-soph level at 2:30.41. Maya Curry was sixth at 2:32.47, giving the Dukes nine points in that event.

York was seventh in the 800 relay at 1:55.37, while the Dukes frosh-soph team won the 800 relay at 1:51.82.

Sarah Pinkowski was second in the 400 at the frosh-soph level at 1:05.28, while Kelly Leonard was third at 1:05.89, giving the Dukes 14 points in that event.

Biggins took sxith in the 1,600 at 5:24.93, while May was seventh at 5:27.14. Grace Moriarty was fifth in the 1,600 at the frosh-soph level at 5:42.43 and Sarah Gutierrez was eighth at 5:55.98.

Isabella Walker won the 200 frosh-soph title at 27.42, while Olivia Williams was sixth at 28.80, giving the Dukes 11 points in that event.

York was seventh in the 1,600 relay at 4:31.99, while the Dukes won the 1,600 frosh-soph relay title in 4:18.44.

Brianna Yarbrough was ninth in the shot put at 29-9 1/4 and Kayla Johnson was 10th at 27-7 3/4. Wendy Ofosu was eighth in the shot at the frosh-soph level with a throw of 244.

Nicole Anderson took second in the high jump (F-S) at 4-7, while Wiederrecht tied for fourth at 4-5, giving the Dukes 10.3 points in the

event.

Pinkowski was third in the long jump at 14-10 1/2 (F-S) and Zoe Clark was seventh at 14-0 1/2.

Evans was fifth in the triple jump at 32-7 1/4. Walker won the 300 dash (F-S) title with a time of 43.71 and Marissa Chavez was third at 45.02, giving the York frosh-soph team 16 points in that event.

Lindsay Sepanski was seventh in the pole vault, while Clarissa Kupczyk was fourth in the pole vault at the frosh-soph level.

York’s frosh-soph team won the indoor conference title by a halfpoint, 108.333 to 107.833 over Lyons Township. York finished seventh on the varsity level.

York coach Keegan Kilrea has seen progress on a number of fronts as the team has transitioned from the indoor season to outdoors.

“Our 4-by-8 relay team has been improving and getting stronger throughout indoor,” she said. “We are excited to see them compete as we move outdoors. Our 200 runners have made some great progress and our middle-distance group also has improved. It will be fun to play around with lineups and see where we can show some strong performances. We are a young team, so we are pleased with making progress.”

Jeanette Morley leads the way for the Dukes in the field events. “We have a lot of promise in the long, triple and high jump,” said Kilrea. “We are a young team that is backed by a very strong returning senior in Jeanette.”

Other athletes stepping up of late include Walker in the 100 and 200, Biggins in the 800 and 1,600, May in the 800 and 1,600, Chavez in the 800 relay and 400, Lydia Hickey in the 1,600 and 800 and Kern in the 400 and 800.

“We made very steady progress while indoors,” said Kilrea. “The girls’ minds and attitudes are right and they want to be competitive and successful. We are working on doing the little things right all the time and building competitive habits. We are hopeful that will come to fruition at the right time.”

After a couple of tough contests, the IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team got back in the win column with a 5-1 non-conference decision against Evergreen Park.

Tessa Langan, Grace Fuller, Olivia Hurt, Kaitlyn Grady and Sophie Zanoni each had a goal. Fuller had two assists, while Hurt and Grady each added an assist.

Earlier, the Knights dropped an 8-0 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game to defending Class 1A state-champion Wheaton Academy and also lost 3-2 to Riverside-Brookfield in another Blue Division game.

The win against Evergreen Park pushed IC Catholic Prep to 7-3 overall.

“Wheaton Academy always is a tough one,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Tom Schergen. “They are very good and they are probably just as good, if not better, than when they won the 1A title. Wheaton Academy is in 2A now so we don’t have to see them again.”

In the Riverside-Brookfield game, R-B led 1-0 before Hurt hit a free kick into the upper corner of the net

from 25 yards out to tie the game.

“R-B put two away to make it 3-1 and then we scored with 20 minutes left. The last 20 minutes it was press, press, press,” said Schergen.

“We couldn’t get that last goal. We had about a week-and-a-half off for spring break and I think that affected us a little bit.”

Fuller had IC Catholic Prep’s other goal against R-B with an assist coming from Demitra DelFiacco.

Through the R-B game, Hurt was leading the team in goals with 10, while Langan had nine.

“I definitely like our energy and intensity we bring every game,” said Schergen. “Against Wheaton Academy it was 2-0 at halftime. We brought the intensity to the game in the first half. They were better-skilled than us, but we were able to hang with them there. We know that energy and intensity won’t be missing. The girls will play hard. We’re still working on fixing some small things, but I really enjoy the intensity they bring.”

Schergen also likes how the team’s newer players have familiarized themselves with their teammates and the system. “We have some freshmen who are new to the team and they are becoming pretty acclimated and playing significant minutes,” he said. “They have blended in well with the rest of the team.”

Schergen said another bright spot on the team has been its goalkeeping with Gabby Smola and Rochelle Spizzirri splitting time at the position.

“Compared to last year it’s been leaps and bounds,” he said. “Both of them have helped solidify our back line. They have three shutouts in (10 games). They have done a nice job back there and deserve a lot of credit.”

Schergen said the end game for the Knights is to be on the top of their game once the IHSA postseason hits.

“Our big goal and big picture is the postseason,” he said. “We want to be playing at the top of our game at that point. We’re going to use these next couple weeks to prepare for that and to prepare for the Adidas Tournament of Champions that we will play in out in Iowa. We want to be playing at a high level and make sure we turn in a good performance there.”

IC Catholic Prep heads to Iowa April 28-29 and then will host both regional and sectional tournaments.

“We’re pretty excited about hosting,” said Schergen. “We seem to play pretty well at home. We’re excited about having home field and not having to travel to play in the playoffs.”

Timothy Christian girls track team performs well at Chicago Christian Hoekstra and Schnurr two key components for Trojans

For a small body of work thus far, Timothy Christian girls track coach Kevin Hackert is pleased.

The Trojans transitioned from the indoor season to the outdoor slate with a strong performance at the Chicago Christian quad that also featured host Chicago Christian, Wheaton Academy and IC Catholic Prep.

“I’m excited how our small team performed at Chicago Christian,” said Hackert.

The Trojans ended up in second

place behind the host school. “With a squad of only 16 girls, I was very proud they could take second against a strong field of teams,” said Hackert. “As the coach, I am very happy with the progress we have made so far this year. We do not have a significant indoor season and our goals always are directed at conference, sectionals and state.

“I know we are on track to peak at the right time for those meets.”

Hackert said one particular area of progress has come in the distance category. “I also am very pleased we have a distance team forming again,” he said. “For the past few years, we have trended toward sprints, but now have a group of eight that is hitting the streets and putting in the miles.

A balanced team always is more fun to coach, even if we are very small.”

Timothy’s field events are led by Olivia Hoekstra in the long jump, Alyse Schnurr in the high jump, Elise Terpstra in the triple jump, Tyra Hopson in the discus and Ruth Hruska, who competes in a variety of field events.

“Ruth likes to do every field event possible,” said Hackert. “All these girls are capable of placing in their respective events at any meet we attend.”

Hoekstra, a multi-sport athlete, is a 100-400 runner and does the long jump. “Olivia has gone downstate all three years of her career,” said Hack-

York baseball team moves to 11-2 on the season Dukes take first two games of series against Glenbard West; Pastuovic homers against Proviso East

The York baseball team won three games during a recent four-game stretch to move its overall record to 11-2.

The Dukes started last week with an 8-6 West Suburban Conference Silver Division win against Glenbard West at Village Green Park in Glen Ellyn.

York won the game by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning to overcome a 6-4 deficit in its final atbat. The Dukes had eight hits.

Andrew Deardurff was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Ian Steinorth went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Nick Lee was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Mike Bernal had an RBI. Mike Pastuovic went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Joey Yaeger went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Austin Gelsomino went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Deardurff had a triple and stole a base. Pastuovic also stole a base.

Burke Corcoran was the winning pitcher. He went six innings and allowed nine hits, but only one earned run. He struck out three. Charlie Pakenas pitched the seventh inning and earned the save.

York then lost 8-6 in non-conference action to Lockport at Ed Flink Field in Lockport. York led 4-3 at one point, but Lockport scored five runs over the fifth and sixth innings. York had 12 hits in the game.

Pastuovic went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Mike Achepohl had a hit and an RBI. Kevin Lipkin had a hit and scored two runs. Yaeger went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Deardurff had an RBI. Steinorth had a hit and two RBI. Ryan Ross had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run.

York returned to conference play and its series with Glenabard West and notched a 3-2 win in 12 innings at York.

York had 11 hits. Bernal added two hits, while Yaeger went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Deardurff and Steinorth each had an RBI. Lee, Pastuovic and Chiappetta each doubled. Bernal and

The Timothy Christian baseball team swept a Metro Suburban Conference Red Division doubleheader from Guerin Prep.

The Trojans won the opener 4-3 thanks to a three-run sixth inning.

Guerin led 1-0 in the first inning and added two more runs in the second.

In Timothy’s half of the fourth inning, Noah Marrera was hit by a pitch with two outs. Consecutive singles by Joey Davidson and Jonny Strube drove in pinch-runner Graham Loughead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Timothy’s Jimmy Allen was hit by a pitch and stole second. Josh Anderson doubled to center, scoring Allen. Davidson then doubled to center, scoring Anderson.

Jakob Loerop was the winning pitcher. He went 5 2/3 innings and struck out five while allowing two hits and no runs. Timothy had only five hits in the game.

Timothy then won the second game 19-4 in five innings. The Trojans led 2-0 in the first inning only to see Guerin come back with three runs in their half of the inning to take the lead.

Timothy then exploded for 16 runs after two were out in the second inning.

Allen hit for the cycle in the game and drove in four runs. Davidson and Brian Schiff each hit home runs, with Schiff cracking a grand slam. Schiff finished with six RBI. Schiff was the winning pitcher.

He went five innings and allowed no earned runs, four hits and struck out four while walking none. Timothy had 16 hits. Anderson, Schiff, Connor Gwaltney and Strube each had a double.

Earlier, Timothy won a 10-8 non-conference game against Westmont. The Trojans scored three runs

in the first inning. Allen singled, Anderson walked and Marrera singled to load the bases. Davidson drove in Allen with a single. Schiff drew a walk to bring in Anderson and Loughead (running for Marrera) scored on a double play.

Westmont scored four runs in the second inning to take the lead, but Timothy eventually came back with five runs in the fifth to take the lead. Strube singled, Gwaltney singled and Allen walked. Strube scored on a fielder’s choice, Marrera and Davidson walked to score Gwaltney and Schiff cleared the based with a double to right-center.

A total of 11 York student-athletes recently signed national letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the next level.

Five York student-athletes will play lacrosse at the collegiate level.

That group includes Matt Colagrossi (Monmouth), Jack Redick (College of Wooster in Ohio), Nick Thomas (Monmouth), Steve Robertson (Augustana) and Gavin Vandenberg (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

Jenna Dvorak will continue her soccer career at Augustana, while Jordan Gray will play men’s basketball at Moraine Valley Community College.

Nick Lee is headed to Benedictine University to play baseball, while Chris McCoy will play football at Winona State in Minnesota. Mike Riley also will continue his football career at Augustana.

Rebecca Squier is headed to the University of Illinois to continue her cheerleading career.

York softball The York softball team went 1-2 during a recent three-game stretch.

The Dukes opened that span with a 12-2 non-conference loss to Conant.

Izzy Smith went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Mia Tran was 2-for-2

with a run scored. Madison Collins and Julia Derkowski each had a hit.

Tran doubled and Smith stole two bases. Derkowski took the loss and struck out five batters. Lauren Wojcik pitched the final two innings.

York also lost 10-1 to Nazareth Academy in non-conference play. Jane Moran had two hits, while Katherine Karnatz, Kyra Kroll, Andrea Meager and Collins each had a hit. Kroll drove in York’s only run. Collins’ hit was a double. Karnatz and Moran each stole two bases and Sydney Fuglsang had one stolen base. Meager took the loss.

Karnatz scored two runs. Smith was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Kroll was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Tran went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Derkowski had a hit. Smith had two doubles. Karnatz stole two bases, while Kroll and Tran each had a stolen base.

Derkowski was the winning pitcher.

She threw a four-hit complete game, allowing only one earned run, while striking out three.

The win against Stagg moved the Dukes to 6-2 overall. York was scheduled to play Proviso West, Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central this week—all West Suburban Conference Silver Division games.

Hackert isn’t too concerned with team scoring results this season. “We are on track to have another successful year,” he said. “It is difficult to win meets with such a small squad, but these women are mentally tough and constantly encouraging each other. In their events, I have no doubt they will continue to improve and exceed their goals.”

Changes to your report are important to review, as they may be signs of fraud. Park District offers summer day camps Elmhurst Park District has summer day camps available for all ages and interests. Camps and programs take place all over Elmhurst, offering flexible locations and options for busy families.

Funseekers Day Camp (ages 5-10) and Funseekers Extreme (ages 1113) are led by experienced, staff and meet Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Campers get their pick of two locations, the north side site at Wagner Community Center or the south side location at the Eldridge Park Recreation Building. Both camps will offer indoor and outdoor activities, special events and three to four field trips a week to local pools, water parks and entertainment venues.

Fees are $40 residents/$50 non-residents a day for Funseekers Day Camp and $43 residents/$54 non-residents a day for Funseekers Extreme. Before and After Camp is also available at both locations.

Courts Plus offers fitness, fun, and a classic summer camp experience in centrally-located Plunkett Park for preschoolers and older children.

Preschool Camp (ages 3-5) offers both a morning session from 9-11:30

a.m. and an afternoon session from 12:30-3 p.m. Campers can look forward to sports, games, and crafts each day.
