Rogers, Park District calls for respect of park rules during crisis Residents invited to walk, jog, bike, but don’t gather in large groups

On Wednesday, March 25, the Elmhurst Park District posted a reminder that its playgrounds are currently closed due to the order of Governor Pritzker, reminding residents that while it’s okay to be in parks to walk, bike or jog, it is not acceptable to be in large groups.

“To do all of those things, we will be asking our staff to leave the safe-

ty of their homes and expose themselves to surfaces that have been touched by thousands of people in the last two weeks -- any of whom could be infected.”

Rogers said the Park District was working cooperatively with the City of Elmhurst and the Elmhurst Police Department, and that they would be ready to assist with enforcement by dispersing people who do not follow the Governor’s order. Park ambassa-

dors will also be making rounds in the parks, Rogers said.

“And while they can all try to do their part to disperse people from the playgrounds or push out groups of people on ball fields and courts, their efforts are only temporary until those same people simply return once they’re gone,” Rogers said. “All that being said, we implore any of you who took part in the discouraged activity to seriously reconsider your

actions. Please do not make us take the next step of closing down the community parks entirely. We want people to be able to get outside to get fresh air and go for a walk, but if this type of blatant disregard for the safety of others continues, we will be forced to do so.

Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers had to issue a special missive to remind people to respect the Governor’s order and the Park District’s attempt to comply with it.

St. Peter’s Church holds 16th annual adult mission trip

A group of adults from St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Elmhurst traveled down to New Bern, North Carolina, Feb. 8-15 for the Church’s 16th annual adult mission trip. The group included 20 parish members who helped rehab homes that are still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Florence in 2018.

Pastor Amanda McEvilly has taken part in six youth mission trips, but this was her first time going on one of the adult mission trips. Amanda stated that it was eye-opening experience.

“To see that Hurricane Florence was almost two years ago, and yet

there are still folks in that area that are recovering from the wind and rain damage, to the point where they’re using paper to hide holes,” Amanda said. Overall, she agreed it was a unique experience for her that was extremely different than any of the youth trips she had previously gone on.

Something special this year was that, for the first time ever, an 18-year-old young man named Lucas decided that he wanted to be a part of the adult mission trip this year. He had taken part in four youth mission trips in the past.

“Lucas was a pleasure to be around,” said Kent Sands, who has

gone on almost every adult mission trip since they began. “He brought an energy level and an enthusiasm level to the trip that was really positive.”

Amanda talked about Lucas as well.

“He was a hard worker, and he always did everything with a smile,” she said. “He was open and willing to learn and ready to dive into everything.”

The adult mission trips provide a great opportunity to bring the community of St. Peter’s UCC together.

“As a pastor, it was great because I really got to know folks on a different level,” Amanda said.

Year after year, parishioners continue to go on these mission trips because of how much they truly enjoy the experience.

“I will go on these trips until I physically can’t go on them anymore,” said Kent.

City announces water and sanitary operations Important note: COVID-19 not detected in drinking water supplies

On March 23, the City issued the following information regarding water and sanitary operations during this time as we confront the COVID-19 Coronavirus.

City officials understand this is a stressful time for the households and businesses in our community. Please know that the City of Elmhurst employees are here for you and are committed to taking all steps necessary to maintain safe, reliable water and sanitary services. Here is some important information regarding the City’s water and sanitary operations during this time.

• You can continue normal use of tap water for all your normal daily uses such as: drinking, cooking, clothes washing, showering, bathing, and especially washing of your hands.

• The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that Americans continue to use and drink tap water as usual.

• COVID-19 has not been detected in any drinking water supplies.

• According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

(CDC): “Conventional water treatment methods that use filtration and disinfection, such as those used by The City of Chicago, DuPage Water Commission (chlorination if needed) and City of Elmhurst (chlorination if needed), should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.”

• The World Health Organization adds that the “presence of the COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking-water supplies and based on current evidence the risk to water supplies is low.”

• Handwashing using tap water is critical to preventing the spread of COVID-19. CDC and other health organizations recommend frequent handwashing for at least 20 seconds each time.

• Remember that your toilet should not be used as a trash can. Do not treat other items like toilet paper. Please do not flush paper towels, “flushable” wipes, napkins, tampons, cotton balls, dental floss or other substances.

Remember: Flushing non-biodegradable items can result in backups and overflows.

• The City is well-prepared to continue providing water service throughout this pandemic. We have staff and infrastructure in place to maintain water service around the clock to help keep the residents and business in Elmhurst healthy, clean, and hydrated.

• Given the importance of hygiene and sanitation to prevent the spread of

COVID-19, the City is postponing water shutoffs until further notice.

• The City is also limiting its field service calls to emergencies related to immediate health and safety concerns.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal trespass, criminal damage March 24 Police said an officer responded to the report of a road rage incident near Lake and Grand at around 3:46 p.m. The victim told police that an unknown suspect exited his vehicle, yelled at him, kicked the rear passenger side door of his vehicle and spat on his passenger. The officer made contact with the suspect, who denied knowledge of the incident and stated he was not driving today.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance March 25 A 51-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 200 block of N. Addison at around 9:24 p.m. A victim told police that subsequent to an argument, the suspect battered her. The officer observed a swollen bruise mark on the victim.

March 24 Police said officers responded for the report of a disturbance at a restaurant in the 800 block of N. York at around 3:45 p.m. A complainant told police that a suspect described as a black female wearing a black/white sweater, black pants and black shoes, entered the restaurant and requested to use the bathroom. The complainant told the suspect that the bathrooms were closed. Subsequently, the suspect urinated on the lobby floor and left the scene in a white Nissan Sentra. An investigation is pending.

March 22 A 26-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 600 block of N. Michigan at around 10:34 p.m. Police said a reporting officer met with the victim who stated the suspect was breaking objects around the house. The suspect then broke a glass candle, causing a small laceration on the victim’s hand.

March 21 A victim near Butterfield and Cadwell told police at around 1:11 p.m. that while traveling with his family in the area of Butterfield and Cadwell, a gray Buick began tailgating them. Once in the Village of Hillside, the vehicle passed the victim’s car and pulled in front them and began slamming on the brakes. The suspected vehicle

March 20 Tomas Chiquito, 37, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, parking in the roadway and no insurance near First and Poplar at around 11:05 p.m.

Police said that subsequent to a report of a suspicious vehicle, Chiquito was found to be driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Harassment, threats March 25 An officer responded to the police station lobby for a harassment report at around 3:51 p.m.

A victim told police that she is having an ongoing issue with the suspect who is harassing her through social media.

March 20 Police said officers responded to Elm Creek Drive for a threat report at around midnight. The reporting officer met with the complainant who stated his son sent him a text message threatening to harm him. A short time later the complainant’s wife observed the suspect outside of the building, but left the scene prior to an officer’s arrival.

The complainant did not wish to sign complaints and does not want the matter investigated.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia March 23 Stephanie Arlequin, 22, and Matthew Eldred, 26, both of Elmhurst, were charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of hypodermic needles and possession of drug paraphernalia near Cottage Hill and Virginia at around 3:27 p.m. Police said that subsequent to the report of a subject slumped behind the wheel, both were found to be in possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia.

March 22 Police said that subsequent to a suspicious vehicle near St. Charles and Fair at around 2:31 a.m., Timothy Garvey, 32, of Glen Ellyn, provided officers with a false name and date of birth.

Upon further investigation it was learned Garvey was wanted on several warrants out of DuPage County, according to police. Upon searching Anna Molenkamp, 31, of Glen Ellyn, police said she was found to be in possession of a controlled substance. Garvey was charged with obstructing identification and Molenkamp was charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Suspicious circumstances March 24 A complainant in the 300 block of Shady Lane told police at around 5:07 p.m. that he found an arrow imbedded in his driveway. He was not concerned about the damage to his driveway, but more for the safety of his children. Neighborhood interviews were conducted with no results.

Jack Andrew Ray, 18, of Elmhurst, was charged with attempt to possess or display any fictitious or altered ID card, consumption of alcohol by a minor and resisting a police officer in the 400 block of W. Alma at around 4:15 a.m.

March 24 According to police, a complainant stated that Ehile Ange Kourouwa, 35, of Chicago, presented a fraudulent identification card in an attempt to access an account. Police said Kourouwa was found to be in possession of several fictitious IDs and credit cards. The occupants of the vehicle— Devin Coleman, 36, and Dwan D. Everett, 41, both of Chicago, were found to be in possession of open alcohol, police said. Kourouwa was charged with felony forgery and identity theft.

Coleman and Everett were cited for open alcohol in a vehicle.

A complainant in the 100 block of N. York told police at around 4:12 p.m. that the suspect did not have enough money to pay for his food order and subsequently stole another customer’s order. The officer located the suspect who admitted to stealing the food. The suspect and the officer went to the business where the suspect paid for the food. The suspect was issued a no-trespass notice.

March 23 Identity theft was reported in the 600 block of S. York at around 10:44 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used his debit card information to withdraw cash from his bank account. The suspect conducted the transaction at the ATM inside of a local store in the 100 block of E. Schiller. The victim is in his possession of his debit card.

March 21 Theft was reported at a store in the 100 block of N. York at around 11:36 p.m. A reporting officer met with the complainant who stated she was the victim of a quick-change scam. The unknown suspect came into the store and asked the complainant to change several different bills.

March 18-March 19 Burglary to a vehicle was reported near a store in the 100 block of S. Route 83. The complainant, a delivery truck driver, told police that he was parked in the parking lot and was sleeping in his truck. Upon feeling the trailer shaking, he woke to observe an unknown blue transport van directly behind his trailer. The suspect van immediately left the scene. The zip tie security seal to the trailer was no longer attached and it appeared that multiple boxes were missing from the trailer.

Feb. 18-March 19 Theft was reported in the 700 block of S. Hawthorne sometime between the above dates. A victim told police that his Sig® brand handgun was taken possibly during a move from Pennsylvania to Elmhurst. This case is pending investigation.

March 14 Theft was reported in the 500 block of W. Belden at around 8:01 a.m. A victim told police that she accidentally left her purse in the back

seat of an Uber car. The victim contacted the Uber driver who searched his car and was unable to locate the purse. The Uber driver told the victim he had several other passengers in his vehicle prior to looking for the purse.

March 10 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of N. Oak Lawn at around 9:34 p.m. Police said a reporting officer met with the victim who stated she received a call from her bank regarding fraudulent charges on her debit card. The victim reported the incident to her bank, which cancelled her card and issued a new one.

Dec. 15, 2018-Feb. 11 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of N. Oak. A reporting officer met with the victim who stated upon reviewing her bank account, she noticed unauthorized charges made between the above dates. This case is pending investigation.

Jan. 17-Jan. 22 Theft was reported at a business in the 300 block of W. Wrightwood. A reporting officer responded to the above address for the report of a suspicious incident. The complainant explained that over the past several months, three checks sent to their business by various customers have been intercepted in the mail and were cashed by unknown parties.

Jan. 3-Jan. 29 Deceptive practice was reported at a company in the 900 block of Industrial Drive. An agent for the victim’s company reports several of their customers received phishing emails which directed the customers to switch their payments to Mid USA Credit Union in Middleton, Ohio, sometime between the above dates. The victim is not at a dollar loss, but wished to document the incident.

Violation of a court order March 24 Melanie Tweedie, 38, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for unlawful visitation interference in the 700 block of Mitchell at around 4:30 p.m.

Obituary

Inez Sather, 102 Inez Sather died on March 22, 2020, having reached the not always envious age of 102.

She was born in a remote part of North Dakota called Kintyre, on February 25, 1918, the second youngest of four Norwegian children. When her mother died two years later, her overwhelmed father asked close friends to take care of Inez. They lovingly consented, eventually adopting Inez who assumed their last name; Edwardsen. That new family eventually settled in Portland, Oregon. Inez graduated from high school, becoming a secretary for Standard Warehouse Company in that city. On a planned trip to Norway, Inez and her parents stopped here in Elmhurst to visit old friends who had also come from Norway. There, she met their son, Roy Sather, for the first time.

A vibrant long distance relationship resulted in marriage on June 28, 1941. Inez and Roy had four children: Sharon Randall, Joyce Green, Greg Sather and Debbie Hamilton. That family plus all the sons-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren have had a wonderful life together. They miss Inez, just as they miss Roy who died previously. A time for a memorial service has yet to be set. Long before she died, Inez requested that all memorial gifts be given to the Ray Graham Association, “a wonderful group that cares for disabled persons.” The address is 901 Warrenville, Rd., Suite 500, Lisle, IL 60532.

Urges compliance with social distancing guidelines I want to address a topic that is actually much more important: following and adhering to social distancing guidelines that are currently in place.

I have been in contact with our local police department and park district, and D205 is working together with a large number of community organizations to try to provide support across the community during these challenging times. One of the things being reported to us, quite frequently over the last couple days, is that people are congregating in our public spaces in large groups, and this must stop immediately!

I was a baseball player, and I hurt my arm. I know that one of the hardest things to do is not being able to play, but there is a lot more at stake here. Everyone is being asked to chip

in. This is just too important. Every life lost is somebody’s parent, somebody’s brother, somebody’s child, somebody’s best friend.

We have to take this seriously!

I want to thank you in advance for your cooperation. I also want to remind you that our D205 playgrounds are closed. They should not be used.

Volunteerism at the forefront The next thing I want to share is something much more uplifting, and that is the community volunteerism that has been on display this past week. The District 205 Foundation has been working with a community group of volunteers, and the work that they have been doing is absolutely outstanding. I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for everything you have been doing to make sure people have basic supplies and enough food to eat.

Just last week, we have served 2,150 meals at Churchville and York High School, and the community has, through the District Foundation, raised $15,000 that has been donated to the United Community Concerns Association. Another $10,000 has

Glowiak Hilton provides resources for economic relief With local restaurants and other small businesses closing for COVID-19 state Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) is sharing resources that will provide economic relief.

“I’m grateful to the many small business owners who closed to help protect public health,” Glowiak Hilton said. “They are sacrificing a lot right now, so we need to make sure that they have all the resources they need to stay afloat during these unprecedented and difficult times.”

Down with daylight saving time It happened again. We had to reset our clocks because of Daylight Saving Time (DST). I’m not sure if we are saving daylight now or if we were week before last. (I just checked. We are in the saving mode. Glad I figured that one out.)

Really though – and I’m trying not to sound cynical here – who cares?

We aren’t changing anything except our clocks when we change our clocks. We aren’t changing the number of hours in a day. We aren’t changing the sunrise or sunset. We aren’t changing how much work we can get done in 24 hours. We’ve been scammed.

It’s like a gigantic mind game played on hundreds of millions of people (over a billion if you count Europe, Canada and Australia) over and over, year after year, decade after decade.

Currently over 70 countries employ some type of DST. But it is controversial.

The concept of DST was originally created to save energy ­– first candle energy and later electricity. Benjamin Franklin proposed the idea in 1784 in a satirical essay. Satire.

Besides, things have changed since we used candles for our night time reading lamps. Current evening uses of energy involve TVs, computers and smart phones.

We don’t use less energy if it gets dark at 5:30 instead of 6:30 p.m.

We use about the same.

Changing the clocks twice a year is disruptive – and not just for the clocks. Adjusting our sleep schedules, even by just an hour, messes with our inner clock – or circadian rhythm – which can lead to physical, mental and behavioral distress. Your internal clock is probably more important than any external one. Yet we play tricks on it at least twice a year.

In addition, studies have shown that early evening darkness in the fall and winter months can lead to depression for some people.

When are we going to see what’s going on and get off this silly merry-go-round? It’s time for

someone to speak up. Here goes: I like eating dinner when it’s light outside. I don’t like early sunsets – and by early I mean before 5:00 pm. I like late summer nights when it doesn’t get dark until after 9:00 pm. I don’t mind a little extra darkness in the morning. I like Daylight Savings Time and I don’t want it to end.

Ever.

I suggest we abolish DST and make it the new normal. No need to go back no Non-Daylight Savings Time. Let’s keep the dial right where it is and keep it that way 24/7, 365 days a year.

We’ll never have to change our clocks again. We’ll never have to watch the sunset at 4:30 pm and eat dinner in the dark. We’ll nurture our circadian rhythms and be better people for it.

We may burn more candles – because they are scented, not for the light they provide. Life will be good. Come on people; let’s do this. Who’s with me?

May Street Neighborhood Association – An Elmhurst treasure An antique fire engine in an Elmhurst parade. A bus trip to Wrigley Field. An impromptu front porch ‘safety’ meeting. A rain gutter full of ice cream. A man named Prez. A lifetime of happy memories.

What do all of these things have in common? They are just a few of the familiar events, activities, and legends of the May Street Neighborhood Association (MSNA – pronounced Miz-na).

Founded in the 1970s by a small group of Cherry Farm subdivision neighbors looking to connect their kids and their block, this group of May Street neighbors from Arlington to Poplar Avenues has grown to include parts of Prairie Avenue and Hill Street.

MSNA co-founder and first president Bill Reichert had this to say: “Sometime in the 1970s my wife Rae suggested we start an informal

gathering of neighbors so we could get to know each other, watch out for each other’s children, and have a bit of fun.”

A resident of May Street since 1969, Reichert added, “It started with four or five couples and just took off from there.”

Over the 40-plus years since MSNA was founded, these folks have celebrated pride for their neighborhood and their neighbors like few other streets. MSNA ‘Block’ parties include parts of at least five traditional blocks, with fun for all ages.

Current MSNA president, Tony Pierotti, shared his thoughts.

“We’ve had moon jumps, food trucks, City of Elmhurst fire trucks, and a BBQ grill trailer at our block parties,” he said. “When we announce the date of the next block party, MSNA neighbors put it in their calendars in ink, just as if it were

an important family wedding. The ice cream sundae gutter is a MSNA favorite – for kids and adults! My wife Mary (whom he credits for most MSNA event planning) took over the annual MSNA holiday party from Ken and Denise Banaszek. It’s a great affair that brings old and new neighbors together!”

Many Elmhurst residents recognize MSNA as the neighborhood which participated in the annual Elmhurst 4th of July parade, until it was discontinued after 2008. Paul Darley, president and C.E.O. of W.S. Darley & Co and a long time MSNA neighbor, provided an original antique Darley fire truck for MSNA’s use in that parade each year.

“The kids loved to ride on the fire truck, in their MSNA t-shirts waving American flags,” he said. “Our parade entry became one of the crowd favorites for many years and

our children, now grown, look back fondly on those parades.”

All agree much of the original MSNA spirit was ignited by longtime MSNA president Tom Neubauer.

Prez, as he was affectionately known to all, passed away in late 2019.

“Prez and his wife Adele were at the center of our group for many years,” continued Reichert. “Their porch, basement, and hot tub were ‘ground zero’ for everything MSNA. Although they moved from May Street a number of years ago, the Neubauers, like others before them, are similar to Marines. Once part of MSNA, always part of MSNA. Prez will be missed, but his spirit lives on within every MSNA member.”

Even folks who never lived on or near May Street are members.

“Marrying into a MSNA family is a big deal,” shared Vince Gatto, who married the daughter of MSNA pres-

ident Tom Neubauer three decades ago. “I was required to attend all important MSNA events and felt like I needed approval from more than just my future father-in-law – I also needed approval from the MSNA executive board. My favorite events are the bus trips to ball games at Wrigley Field or the old County Stadium in Milwaukee.”

If you find yourself winding down this beautiful street and see some folks out having fun with their neighbors, they may just be having an impromptu ‘safety’ meeting and raising a glass to Prez.

Illinois 4-H challenges youth to try new things, experiment in project areas that interest them, and explore opportunities around the state and country. The 4-H Experience Award recognizes youth who excel in that challenge.

“I’m not sure I can count all the ways 4-H has impacted me,” said award-winner Brayden Caraynoff-Huber of Kendall County 4-H. Several local youth were recognized for the highest level of this award, emerald, including Elizabeth Berberich of Villa Park. The award is sponsored by the Illinois 4-H Foundation.

Area teens who were recognized with the emerald level in project learning included Alexander Ford of Elmhurst, who also was recognized with an Illinois 4-H Key Award for mentoring and serving his community.

These nine local youth earned these honors with other teens from around the state.

State officials warn of possible looming recession

Amid COVID-19 outbreak, revenues could fall 20 percent

CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

A commission that advises the General Assembly on revenue and economic issues is warning that a slowdown of business activity caused by the COVID-19 outbreak is likely to bring about a recession that could cause a 20 percent drop in state revenues, spread out over a number of fiscal years.

The Commission on Government Finance and Accountability, or CoGFA, gave that warning as part of its three-year budget forecast, which it is required to make annually. Those forecasts include an analysis of potential threats and opportunities to the state budget.

“While the certainty of the country, and world, plunging into recession seems to grow each day, attempting to value the impact of COVID-19 on state revenues is virtually impossible,” the report stated in the section dealing with economic threats. “With that caveat, it seems reasonable to offer a scenario with more devastating impacts on revenues in the near-term than even the ‘Great Recession.’ As a result, should revenues experience a peak-trough decline of 20 percent, a revenue reduction of over $8 billion would be experienced, although likely spread over multiple fiscal years.”

CoGFA is an agency made up of 12 legislators, divided evenly between the House and Senate, and be-

tween Republicans and Democrats, and staffed by financial experts. It is headed by a full-time executive director, Clayton Klenke.

In an interview Wednesday, Klenke described the possibility of a 20 percent decline in revenue as a “worst case scenario,” based on the state’s experience in previous recessions.

During the recession of 20012003, caused largely by the burst of the “dot-com bubble” on Wall Street, followed by the terrorist attacks of 9/11, state revenues in Illinois fell about 5.5 percent, or about $1.3 billion.

The Great Recession of 20082009 that followed the U.S. housing

market collapse produced a much sharper decline, 8.7 percent, or a little more than $2.5 billion.

State revenues have generally been growing since then, except for fiscal years 2016 and 2017 when there was a temporary reduction in tax rates, and so a recession worse than the Great Recession would have a significantly larger impact In early March, CoGFA issued an economic and revenue forecast for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1, that said the outlook was generally good, although economic growth was expected to slow somewhat. That report estimated total state revenues for the year at a little more than $40.6 billion.

Last year, Moody’s Investors Services issued a report identifying Illinois and New Jersey as the two states that would be least able to weather a recession. In the case of Illinois, that was based the state’s lack of cash reserves and its high fixed costs for debt repayment, its backlog of unpaid bills and pension obligations.

As recently as early March, however, the report noted that Moody’s Analytics had described Illinois as being, “in decent shape for a state facing a slowdown in manufacturing, poor agricultural conditions, and numerous demographic and fiscal problems” and that the state’s economy was “doing better than it has in some time.”

Community health centers ask state for emergency funding CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

The novel coronavirus could “create long-lasting, devastating damage” to Illinois health care facilities that serve vulnerable communities.

Community health centers are treating fewer patients than normal after all 390 locations around the state canceled routine and preventative medical visits to slow the spread of COVID-19 per guidance from federal and state officials.

That means fewer government reimbursements for facilities that use them to pay staff salaries and

purchase supplies. According to a report from Capital Link, community health centers in Illinois are projected to lose almost $140 million in revenue over the next three months, or 70 percent of the business typically generated.

This segment of the state’s health care safety net is already underfunded by about $150 million annually, Jordan Powell, president of Illinois Primary Health Care Association, said.

“This could have a long-lasting impact on the health center delivery system,” he said. “Because we’re already underfunded, it only exacer-

bates the short-term problem we’re facing right now.”

Illinois’ entire congressional delegation signed a letter to Gov. JB Pritzker urging the state to allocate temporary funding to alleviate these centers’ potential need to lay off staff or permanently shutter facilities.

“It would be unthinkable for a community health center to be forced to close due to a lack of adequate resources,” the representatives wrote. “... While we understand that Illinois will have to make tough choices in the days, weeks, and months ahead, adequate funding provided directly to our community health centers

now will ensure we are ready to overcome these challenges.

There is no funding amount cited in the letter, but it specifies it “should be adequate for sustaining the provision of core health services in addition to responding to the coronavirus pandemic, and they must be flexible enough to meet the varying needs of our health centers serving Illinois’ unique and diverse communities under conditions which are rapidly evolving.”

In his daily novel coronavirus briefing March 23, Pritzker was asked what state resources are available to the facilities, which typically treat 1.4 million patients and create 18,500 jobs.

He did not answer the question directly, instead saying, “We want to make sure that those health centers are able to remain open as soon as possible.” Pritzker added his administration is collaborating with federal officials to ensure funding is included in a national stimulus bill.

Daniel Bobek, 26, is about 20 years younger than his oldest sibling. So when the youngest Bobek reached out to his three brothers and one sister after seeing a local audition ad for the popular Family Feud game show, his elders didn’t really take him seriously.

“Daniel mentioned to us in a group chat that he thought it would be ‘kinda fun’ to tryout for Family Feud,” said Jan Bobek, one of the older brothers. “Let us know when to be there, Daniel, we told him. We really didn’t think he’d do all the paperwork required!”

The rest, as they say, is history. The Bobek family, including oldest to youngest siblings Jeffrey, Donna Bielanski, Jan, Matt and Daniel, were selected to audition at a Schaumburg hotel in November of 2018. Then weeks later, producers sent an email notifying the family that it was selected to tape an in-studio Family Feud game show at Universal Studios in Hollywood in May 2019.

“Our mother still watches Family Feud,” said Bobek. “My sister records every episode, and I guess at one point we were all watching the show, but then life gets in the way. But once we were selected to audition, I started watching again.”

In addition to each family member’s musical ability, Bobek is the lead violinist in a Polish Highlander string ensemble called Kapela Hajducy. Brothers Matt and Daniel join him in the band.

The family hit the right note with producers at the audition, as it performed the “Family Feud” theme song using the violin, viola and bass while wearing traditional Polish Highlander clothing.

“We wanted to represent our culture and put our best foot forward, and I guess we did that,” said Bobek. “Cause we made it.

“As part of our prep [for the studio taping], we started practicing as often as we could. We practiced the game at family parties. We watched episodes together and had daily conference calls. We were pumped and focused and excited and nervous.”

The Bobeks, clad in their traditional Polish attire, were gameready and realized they had a secret weapon to combat any nerves.

“We took [Family Feud] as seriously as we took any other musical performance we’ve had,” said Bobek. “This wasn’t our first time on stage; we are all performers.”

And perform they did. Led by Bobek, a music teacher and orchestra director at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, the family won the “Main Game” round, catapulting them into the Fast Money round. Bobek and brother Daniel teamed up to answer five survey questions each. The more popular the answer is, based on 100 people surveyed, the more points each contestant receives.

“We reconnected as a family. We got closer as adults, and the age gap sort of disappeared,” Bobek said.

“We all watched the episodes [that aired] at my mom’s and had dinner as a family.

“When this all started, we agreed that no matter what, we were taking mom with us [to Hollywood]. She told us while she was in the audience, that she was praying on every question.”

Practice pays off “We practiced the Fast Money round in our mom’s basement,” said Bobek. “We scientifically chose who the two players would be in Fast Money. It was whoever got the most points, and that was Daniel and me.”

Attorney General taking price gouging action, warns of COVID-19 scams Urges those experiencing utility shutoffs to contact his office via its website

The Illinois Attorney General’s office has been working with a reduced and mostly remote staff the last 10 days, but it continues to warn against COVID-19-related price gouging, scams and utility shut-offs.

Earlier in March, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul issued a news release warning businesses to “maintain fair prices on goods” and announcing that his office will “take action to stop unfair pricing on items that are crucial to stopping the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.”

On March 26, Raoul’s office issued another release announcing efforts with a bipartisan group of 32 other attorneys general urging Amazon, Facebook, eBay, Walmart and Craigslist to “rigorously monitor price gouging practices by online sellers using their services.”

Raoul and the coalition said while companies are cooperating with the states’ efforts to stop price gouging, they asked the online retailers to do more to monitor listings by third-party sellers.

“At a time when my office could be assisting people who are concerned about how the COVID-19 pandemic will impact their mortgage, rent and student loan debt payments, my office is devoting significant resources to investigating individuals who are attempting to benefit from the public health crisis by putting profits before people,” Raoul said.

In their letters to the companies, Raoul and the coalition referenced a two-liter bottle of hand sanitizer listed for $250 on Craigslist, an 8-ounce bottle of hand sanitizer listed for $40 on Facebook Marketplace, and packs of face masks being priced at $40 and $50 on eBay. Raoul and the coalition argued

any product promoted online on social media or via email that is being touted as a cure to COVID-19.”

False cures and treatments that have been marketed but are not effective include chlorine dioxide, hydroxychloroquine, essential oils, silver, elderberry and garlic, according to Raoul’s office.

His office also urged the public to be wary of emails claiming to be from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or other entities claiming to have information about COVID-19, or offering treatments or cures.

According to the CDC, there is no vaccine to protect against COVID-19 and no medications approved to treat it, and any emails claiming otherwise should be deleted, Raoul said, urging consumers to follow reputable sources such as the Illinois Department of Other COVID-19 scams Another March news release Public Health and the CDC. The attorney general’s office received hundreds of complaints about price gouging on items such as hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, face masks, disinfectant sprays and toilet paper, Raoul said.

His office is collaborating with state’s attorneys throughout Illinois to combat price gouging within communities, according to the release.

Raoul said consumers can report unfair business practices connected to the COVID-19 outbreak by visiting the attorney general’s website and filling out a complaint form at https://ccformsubmission.ilattorneygeneral.net.

Utility disconnections Raoul’s office has also urged consumers to file an online complaint if they experience utility disconnections or disrupted service while the COVID-19 disaster is ongoing.

On March 18, the Illinois Commerce Commission mandated all public utilities to suspend disconnections from service and late fees until at least May 1, or until the state of emergency is lifted.

“Being shut off from utility service is the last thing people should worry about as they work remotely, care for vulnerable populations, or self-quarantine,” Raoul said in the release.

The ICC’s emergency order applies to public utility companies across Illinois, but does not apply to municipally owned utilities and co-ops. He urged those entities to follow the ICC request to cease disconnections, suspend late fees and adopt flexible payment plans.

The ICC also issued an order to prohibit in-person solicitations by alternative retail electric and gas suppliers during the pandemic.

Raoul encourages Illinoisans who experience utility disconnections or encounter door-to-door energy supplier marketers to file complaint at the same form used to report price gouging at https:// ccformsubmission.ilattorneygeneral.net.

York boys track team stacked to the rafters with talent Dukes loaded with college-bound athletes

How talented is the York boys track team?

Coach Charlie Kern’s squad features five athletes who are signed with Division I colleges. And with that elite talent plus even more standout performers throughout the lineup, the Dukes have high hopes coming off a 2019 season where they won the West Suburban Conference Silver Division indoor title, took third outdoors in the conference and fourth at the sectional.

Back to the college-bound athletes. That group includes seniors Eric Sylvester (Illinois-Chicago),

Daniel Klysh (Iowa), Michael Moriarty (Missouri), Ethan Kern (Kentucky) and Richard Buehling (Boston University).

Three of those individuals — Klysh, Moriarty and Kern — were part of the York 3,200 relay group that took fifth in the state last spring.

The other athlete involved in that relay’s success, junior Mickey Vreeland also is back.

Buehling is a returning state triple jump qualifier, while Sylvester qualified for state in the 400.

Also back is junior Christopher Radcliff, who won the WSC Silver indoor title in the 200 last year, as well as seniors Kam Stearns (triple jump) and Max Santiago (110 high hurdles), along with junior distance runner Colin Hill.

Key varsity newcomers for the Dukes include seniors Jimmy Hoffman (200, 400, sprint relays), Hawley

Bronson (high jump), Blake Becker (high jump) and Jason Butterfield (pole vault), as well as juniors Jalen Thomas (long jump), Esau Carbajal (long jump and sprints) and Sami Ayash (100, 200 and sprint relays).

“We have a very focused group with strong leaders in every group,” said Kern. “We have talent and work ethic across our team. We have a chance to score in many events at the state meet. We are not likely to score in big meets in the throwing events, but we are so proud of their improvement thus far.”

Kern saw plenty of positives in the abbreviated indoor season. Radcliff was the No. 1-ranked 200 runner in the state indoors at 22.19 and set a new school indoor record with that time. Hoffman was at 22.60 in the 200 and was ranked third in the state indoors.

Santiago was the Class 3A top-

ranked indoor 55 high hurdles runner with a time of 7.86. Klysh was ranked fifth indoors in the 1,600 and was part of the 3,200 relay team that was ranked third.

Hill was ranked 15th in the 1,600 indoors. Hill and Lupo also saw 3,200 relay action indoors. Buehling was ranked 10th indoors in the triple, while Stearns was ranked 25th in the same event.

“The indoor season was going very well,” Kern said. “We have a very focused group. They come to practice every day with the intention of getting better. We won the two invites we participated in and we were excited to compete with the members of our conference prior to school closing.

“We are hoping everyone does their part to flatten the curve by maintaining social distance and we return to normal as soon as possible.

Pitching staff a major bright spot for IC baseball team Knights have depth throughout roster

It’s an arms race for the IC Catholic Prep baseball team.

Coach Frank DeAngelis has a 2020 roster flooded with pitching depth, which he hopes will help the Knights improve upon last year’s 14-19 overall record (5-8 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division; 6-10 against all MSC teams).

Back for the Knights are seniors Kevin Cooke (shortstop, pitcher), Tommy Ryan (third base, outfield, pitcher), Chris Vitek (infield, outfield, pitcher) and Andrew Zwolinski (outfield, pitcher), as well as sophomore Nick Kozerski (infield, pitcher) and junior Dave Sykora (outfield, pitcher). Senior Brennan Fisher (first base, outfield, pitcher) is a transfer and adds further depth to the pitching staff.

“We would be in a good spot with our pitching load,” DeAngelis said. “Even if we start playing five or six games a week we would be fine and would get through that because of the depth. We even had a JV game scheduled weekly to get people more work. Our pitching depth, which is about 13 arms, has the ability to eat up many innings in the regular season and postseason play. We are deep at many positions, including our mound presence.”

Other key contributors for the Knights will be junior catcher/infielder Joseph Cousineau (another transfer), senior Jack Ryan (outfield) and junior Will Cooke (third base-outfield).

The Knights have a total of 13 seniors back with six competing for starting spots. “While our exit from the 2019 regionals was earlier than expected, our 2019 team was young. We were starting underclassmen at key positions and we lost a handful of regular season games

by one run,” said DeAngelis. “Both the strong competition in our conference and very competitive out-of-state on our spring trips has helped strengthen our returners and has created a path for the 2020 roster going into this new season. We were pretty young in some key spots last year. We had a sophomore start almost 35 games behind the plate and had a freshman at second base and a lot of juniors.

They were all inexperienced and young and we still lost a handful of games by a run and some games we should not have lost.”

DeAngelis has a roster of 25 players this spring. “We currently have a versatile group of players that can and is willing to play anywhere on the diamond,” he said. “We handle the bat well and we do possess good team speed.

We anticipate to play pressure baseball on the offensive end this year, and should clean up some of our repetitive defensive mistakes from last year with the talent we have at each position.”

Prior to the pandemic shutdown, DeAngelis liked what he saw in the first two weeks of practice. “We cleaned a lot of things up,” he said. “Between the two weeks of practice and some open gyms, we were looking good. This was some of the best weather we’ve had in a spring in like 10 or 15 years. It was frustrating to see where we were at when everything shut down. We were ahead of the game with things like bunt coverages and their IQ on the baseball field. Kids were playing more summer baseball and now we have a lot of multi-sport athletes who are baseball-driven. It’s great to see.”

DeAngelis said the team will benefit greatly from the addition of Fisher, the son of IC Catholic Prep girls basketball coach Todd Fisher. “He’s a 6-4, 215-pound guy who will solidify first base for us and anchor the corner.”

Fisher will play at Quincy University.

DeAngelis then drifted back to talk about how different this year’s team looked during the short period of practice time.

“We are better,” he said. “Kids were driving the ball. We looked different. We have 13 seniors who want to compete. That’s the hard part. I think we would be competitive in our conference. We were way ahead of schedule just from seeing the live scrimmages. Kids were doing things they were not doing in the past.

They were doing more things on the diamond.”

DeAngelis noted this will be the fourth year in a row the school has fielded a full freshman team. “I believe baseball is the second-biggest sports program at IC now behind football,” the coach noted. “We have 50 kids in the baseball program. I like where we are at. I am excited.

We don’t know what the story will end up being, but we’ve never been a position where we have had to make so many decisions about what the lineup is going to look like. We have three or four guys at every position and we have good pitching. We can rotate guys in to fill spots depending on the pitching rotation.”

DeAngelis added Cousineau gives the Knights even more depth at catcher. “We went from not having a lot behind the plate to having three or four guys who can catch and do a good job. We are better at that position,” DeAngelis said.

Overall, DeAngelis likes where things are headed. “Our program is excited where we are at from a varsity standpoint, but we also have tremendous baseball skillset at the lower levels in our freshman and sophomore teams,” he said.

“A few freshman players have the opportunity to be pulled up and make an impact on the defensive end. This has created competition at all levels and has the ability to help our program build a championship culture.”

Like all other spring sports, DeAngelis is looking forward to a resumption of the season when it is safe to do so.

“We will be ready,” he said. “We just want to play together. That’s the tough part that is setting in right now. I miss being around the guys.”

We are very aware of the seriousness of COVID-19, but we would be so disappointed if we were not able to compete this spring. If we can resume the season, we will be beyond excited to continue working on self-improvement.”

Kern has been impressed with the development of Radcliff and Hoffman in the 200. “Our sprint coaches Reed Sundberg and Mark Talbot have done a phenomenal job bringing Jimmy back from a very serious hamstring injury his sophomore year at state,” he explained. “They also have worked with Christopher to gain strength and confidence, which led to the fastest indoor 200 time regardless of class. We also have high expectations for Eric Sylvester, who qualified for state last year and ran in the prelims of the 400 dash.

This year, the goal is to make it to Saturday and race for valuable team points.”

Kern also likes how the distance group is shaping up. “The distance group is strong and we expect to see two athletes in all the distance events, including the 4-by-800 relay,” he said. “This group is very deep and injured athletes are getting into shape again. There will plenty of internal competition to prepare them for the championship season. Michael Moriarty and Daniel Klysh are among the top returners in the 800 and are excited to double back from the 4-by-800 relay. Max Lupo has really improved from last season and was a member of our sub-eight-minute 4-by-800 relay team indoors. Colin Hill has demonstrated the most improvement thus far. He provides our team with many options. He could race at the state level in any of the three distance events and be a legitimate scorer.

“Mickey Vreeland ran in the finals of the 3,200 relay last year and has been running well again after struggling all summer with a lower body injury and made the Nike national team after not making the state meet lineup. He also is capable of running any race from the 800 through the 3,200. Ethan Kern is rounding into shape after dealing with a lower body injury. He will be a candidate for the 4-by-800 relay team and perhaps an individual event. Sam Ayers has been running as well as ever after running as our third man in cross country prior to the conference meet. He will strengthen our 3,200 group.”

York’s field events are showing potential as well, Kern noted, particularly on the jumps end. “Coach Ben Sharko has done a tremendous job developing our jump group,” he said. “We have two athletes who have set their sights on qualifying for state and jumping in the finals on Saturday. Hackert also has high hopes for sophomore Caily Schurrmann. “As a freshman last year, Cailey was our biggest surprise athlete,” he said.

Hackert noted Schurrmann ran a 1:02 split in the 1,600 relay at the sectional meet. “We cannot wait to see what she does this year,” he said.

Hackert noted Alex will be missed in both the sprint relays, but added the team has been bolstered with the addition of transfer Sheiliah Ruffin-Jackson. “She has really been impressing us in practice,” he said.

Hackert added Ruffin-Jackson will be part of the 400 and 800 relay teams.

No surprise, Hackert paints the relay picture as extremely bright.

“We will be very strong in the sprint relays all the way through the 4-by400,” he said.

Hackert said another major strength for the group is the senior class. “Our seniors are fantastic,” he said. “Hope, Priscilla and Elise Terpstra are all great athletes with great attitudes. We are only praying that we are able to have a season to show off their abilities one more year.”

In terms of the WSC Silver outdoor race, Kern said there is plenty to keep an eye on. “Tim Hasso’s Oak Park-River Forest team has been well-coached and has been the dominant WSC team for the past five years. It will take a lot to outscore them,” Kern noted. “Proviso West has added high-quality coaches to its staff the past three years and the fruits of their labor showed this winter.”

York is scheduled to host the DuPage County Meet on May 8 before heading to Proviso West a week later on May 15 for the WSC Silver Meet.

York is scheduled to be part of the Class 3A Wheaton North Sectional this year.

The Trojans won the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division title and sent a plethora of athletes to the Class 1A state finals in Charleston.

A year later, and the Trojans and coach Kevin Hackert have even higher hopes with six girls with state finals experience returning.

“We want to repeat as conference champs, have at least five events qualifying for state and return to the podium for one or two of them,” Hackert said.

The good news is Hackert has plenty of folks back who competed on the big blue track at Eastern Illinois University last May. That list includes senior Hope Clark (3,200 run), senior Elise Terpstra (800 run, triple jump) and junior Campbell Marshall (high jump), as well as state relay runners in senior Priscilla Nartey (400, 800 relay) and junior Alli Myers (400 and 800 relay). Junior Sureya Alex also ran at state in both of those relays, but she is concentrating on basketball this spring, Hackert noted. Also back from those two state relays is sophomore Kennedi Clark.

IDES outlines process to file for unemployment Gov. Pritzker on March 26 and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) announced they are taking additional steps to address the unprecedented volume of unemployment benefit claims the department has fielded as a result of COVID-19.

To date, the department has taken several steps to improve the unemployment benefit claims process via the online portal and the call center.

• The website has been moved to new hardware infrastructure to handle the increased demand.

• Web, storage and processing capacity has been increased to meet needs of increased traffic.

• Methods have been implemented to track COVID-19-related claims.

• Call center capacity has been increased.

• Daily call center hours have been extended to respond to those waiting in the queue after closure.

• Call center staff has been supplemented by 40% to cut down on wait times.

• Both the website and the call center will continue to be monitored for improvements in functions and abilities.

Online filing schedule • Those with last names beginning with letters A-M will be asked to file their claims on Sundays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays.

• Those with last names beginning with letters N-Z will be asked to file their claims on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays.

• Saturdays will be available for anyone to accommodate those who could not file during their allotted window.

Call Center filing schedule • Those with last names beginning with letters A-M will be asked to call on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

• Those with last names beginning with letters N-Z will be asked to call

on Mondays and Wednesdays between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

• Fridays (7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.) will be available for anyone to accommodate those who could not file during their allotted window.

The day or time of day in which a claim is filed will not impact whether you receive benefits or your benefit amount. Additionally, claims will be back-dated to reflect the date in which a claimant was laid-off or let go from their job due to COVID-19.

IDES is currently working through an unparalleled number of unemployment benefit claims and questions, both online and through the call center.

Over the first three weeks of March, IDES has received over 130,000 unemployment benefit claims, an increase of close to 400%

compared to the corresponding weeks the prior year. The department received close to 115,000 claims for the week of March 21 alone, an increase of nearly 1,400% compared to the corresponding week the prior year. Additionally, the call center continues to field hundreds of calls per minute, per day.

The administration and the department understand and empathize with the heightened level of frustration this crisis has had on those wishing to file a claim. IDES is doing everything possible to support its customers and meet the demand for unemployment benefit inquiries and claims.

Bensenville company turns around business by repurposing Walmart, Sam’s plan to install sneeze/ cough guards

When life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade.

That’s just what a Bensenville business did when it was in danger of closing down because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now the company is manufacturing face shields for first responders and hospitals.

Laird Plastics began to re-purpose materials it already had on-hand in its warehouse.

When one of its product managers spoke to a friend at Rush University Medical Center, the company was able to obtain a large order for face shields to be used at the hospital as well as by first responders.

According to company officials, Laird Plastics is also manufacturing shields that may soon be found in grocery stores. Walmart is installing plexiglass barriers in pharmacy lanes, and Sam’s Club will install the same sneeze and cough guards at registers over the next two to three weeks. The barriers will likely appear locally in other grocery stores, too.
