Levin gathered to watch the results of the Consolidated Election come in. By about 9 p.m., it was announced that Levin was elected Mayor of the City of Elmhurst.

As of the latest posting of (still unofficial) results by the DuPage County Board of Elections at 11:48 p.m.

Tuesday evening, with 100% precincts reporting, Levin received almost 41% with 3,391 votes; following was Michael Bram with 2,798 votes or 33.8%; and, Mark Mulliner, who brought in almost 25% of the vote with 2,039.

In the Wards Jennifer Veremis took the lead in the 1st Ward with 586 votes over Susan M. Smentek, with 449, and Kevin J. Flanagan, 151. This race is for a two-year term to fill the vacant seat formerly held by Mark Sabatino.

First Ward Alderman Marti Deuter was re-elected to her seat for another four-year term.

In the 2nd Ward, Jacob Hill beat Tristan E. Dacre by a vote of 596289, earning 67.36% of the vote for the seat long-held by former alderman Norman Leader, who has retired.

Christopher R. Jensen was the top vote-getter in the 3rd Ward collecting 387 votes over Nektarios Arvanitis, with 329, and Alan Quarrie’s 159.

Robert “Bob” Thomsen Terp, 95 Robert “Bob” Thomsen Terp, passed away on Feb. 23, 2021, at the age of 95. Welcomed in heaven by his parents Anna and Nis Terp, brother Harold, wife Barbara (Mills) and her family. He is survived by his wife Elaine (Beese); children Patricia (Sinan), Karen (Gerald), Richard

(Jane), Susan, Carol (Glenn), Bruce (Lori); grandchildren Lara, Eren, Andrew, James, Sean, Lauren, Morgan, Jillian, and Noelle; and great grandchildren Mirabel, Brynna, and Michaela. Isham Russell Moses, Jr. Isham Russell Moses, Jr., or “Russ Moses,” was born July 8, 1926 in Maywood and passed away on April 7, 2021, in Lombard. Beloved husband of Mary Lou, nee Tiberi, married June 9, 1996.

Devoted father of Cheryl (the late Robert) Palko, Bruce (Jan) Moses, Sandra (Donald) Muellner, and Gregory (Donna) Moses; loving grandfather of eight and great-grandfather of 21. Survived by his loving sister Joyce (the late Joseph) Turyna. Proud uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his first wife Gloria Jean, nee Kenyon; and siblings Linda (Fred) Forester, George (Nancy) Moses, Gwen (Tony) Conti and Billy (Stan) Deuitch; and his parents, Isham Russell Moses, Sr. and Emaline Moses, nee Bunch.

Russ proudly served as a medic in the Army from April 1, 1946 to October 2, 1947. He worked at Sears Roebuck for more than 30 years, where he earned Salesman of the Year Award more than once. He faithfully supported First Congregational Church of Villa Park for many years. He was a longtime member of Elmhurst Masonic Lodge 941. Russ was loved and admired by almost everyone he met, due to his wonderfully friendly, congenial personality. Many children loved “Uncle Russ” as he entertained them with his never-ending jokes, songs, funny stories, and his famous “magic” trick performances. His own kids feel truly blessed to have had him as our beloved dad. He will be sadly missed. Earth’s loss is Heaven’s gain.

Funeral service was held on Thursday, April 15 at 10 a.m. at Steuerle Chapel, 350 S Ardmore Ave., Villa Park. Interment Fairmont-Willow Hills Memorial Park.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, all visitors were required to check in at the link above, as a limited number of visitors were allowed at a time. All visitors were required to wear a face mask while inside the building and maintain social distance.

Criminal defacement, criminal trespass, criminal damage April 6 A complainant came into the police station at around 10:22 a.m. to report an unknown suspect cracked his vehicle’s windshield and stole his parking sticker. The officer did not observe any visible adhesive residue where the purported parking pass would have been located. Elmhurst University related the complainant has not received a parking sticker since 2017.

A City of Elmhurst employee reported a damaged surveillance camera in the train depot’s underground pedestrian walkway in the 100 block of W. First at around 10:24 a.m.

April 5 A reporting officer met with the complainant in the 200 block of N. York who stated the suspect was in the business using profane language and threatening to harm employees. The suspect was served with a no trespass order and released from the scene.

April 1-April 2 A reporting officer met with the complainant who reported that an unknown suspect(s) damaged several benches and playground equipment at a school in the 400 block of N. West sometime between the above dates.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct April 5 A 25-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 600 block of W. Crockett at around 2:50 a.m.

Police said a reporting officer met with the complainant who stated the suspect struck the victim in the mouth.

Police said a 40-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with violation of domestic battery bail bond and transported to the DuPage County Jail in the 500 block W. Babcock at around 12:26 p.m.

Police said officers responded to the 400 block of N. West at around 10:04 p.m. for the report of a domestic dispute. The reporting officer met with the complainant who stated her boyfriend threatened her and was attempting to enter the residence. The suspect stated he was at the residence to retrieve personal items and the complainant was denying him access to the home. The suspect agreed to leave and not return to the residence.

April 4 A 40-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 500 block of W. Babcock at around 10:10 a.m. Police said a reporting officer met with the victim who stated she sustained an injury to her hand caused by the suspect.

Cassandra Tello Duran, 26, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, failure to signal and improper lighting, while Guillermo Ocampo, 51, of Chicago, was charged with obstructing a police officer subsequent to a traffic stop near North and I-290 at around 12:56 a.m.

Eileen Williams-Jackson, 57, of Lombard, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 11:31 p.m.

April 1 Theft by deception was reported in the 300 block of N. Larch at around 2:14 p.m. A victim told police he was contacted via social media by two unknown suspects who requested the victim purchase two gift cards and supply the information along with a copy of the victim’s driver’s license. The victim complied with the request and later learned he had been the victim of a scam.

March 10 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of N. Avon at around 3:27 p.m. A victim reported that an unknown suspect(s) used his Social Security number to file a tax return.

April 1 Martin Sotelo, 32, of Lombard, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis by driver and unlawful use of an electronic communication device subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Grand at around 8:31 p.m.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported five incidents of identity theft with the intention of using a victim’s personal information to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Why Michael Madigan hasn’t yet been indicted

By Jim Nowlan Friends ask: “Why hasn’t Mike Madigan been indicted yet? After all, he has been under investigation for what must be a couple of years now.”

My answer: It’s because the federal prosecutor is not confident he can prove that the former Illinois House speaker personally did anything illegal.

I define public corruption as receiving unearned personal gain at taxpayer expense. There are obviously illegal forms of corruption—as well as “legal corruption.” In the latter, there is political gain but not provable personal gain.

For example, several decades ago, there was passionate debate in Springfield over Illinois ratification of the U.S. Equal Rights Amendment (an effort which then failed narrowly in Illinois). As the debate raged, in the state Capitol and within earshot of others, a woman baldly offered a legislator $500 or so if he would vote for the ERA Amendment. That is clearly an act of public corruption, and she was convicted for same, as I recall.

Similarly, Chicago Alderman Ed Burke has apparently been caught on a telephone wiretap saying he was holding up a needed city license until a small-time restaurant owner agreed to sign up with Burke’s law firm for property tax appeal work. Again, if shown to be so in court, that represents seeking personal gain in return for releasing a license he controlled.

But, if no one gains personally, and there is never a communication between an official and a possible bribee about a quid pro quo, then where is the illegality?

Mike Madigan has been a legend for decades in Springfield for never putting his fingerprints, or voice prints, on anything. He doesn’t use email or the phone; instead, he winks and nods, say some insiders, and you can’t indict a guy for winking.

Nor has he apparently received any personal gain from governmental transactions. He hasn’t had to, because he has made his millions heading a law firm that does property tax appeal work in Chicago—most big building owners sign up to be represented by Madigan.

This is a hallowed scam, you might say, in which assessors, some of whom have been handmaidens of Madigan, jack up city building

assessments. Then a property tax law firm like Madigan’s (there are half a dozen, all deeply connected to Chicago Dem politicos) goes in and appeals for the property owner clients.

And voilà, the assessment is reduced to about where it should be. Everybody wins, you might say: Property owner gets a tax reduction, and an elected official/private attorney like Madigan “earns” a big fee outside government. All perfectly legal corruption.

(Note: Years ago, when I headed a statewide business organization, I had a property tax executive tell me: “Jim, my company owns properties all over America, and Chicago is absolutely the only place in the nation that we have to hire an attorney to handle our property taxes!”)

But, has Madigan done anything actually illegal? I don’t know, and I am guessing the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois doesn’t know either—or worries he can’t prove in court—that Madigan has done so.

To paraphrase an old saw about grand juries and their proclivity to indict: A criminal trial jury today would convict a ham sandwich if it wore a Re-elect Mike Madigan T-shirt. But, would such a conviction stand up on appeal today, in light of recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions that circumscribe the definition of what constitutes illegal public corruption?

Which gets us to the politics of U.S. attorneys in Chicago. They have a greater than 95 percent conviction rate over the years in public corruption cases. Many top elected officials, like our late Gov. Jim Thompson, got their jumpstart in politics as corruption-busting U.S. attorneys who put away lots of ‘bad guys.” Thus, a U.S. attorney hates to lose in court; it’s not only embarrassing, but it dulls the luster on his or her future career.

For the past couple of years, the U.S. attorney’s phalanx of lawyers has been squeezing Madigan associates about what the speaker might have said, might have done.

In that regard, I have a good friend who was “measured for a striped suit” (he did time) as part of the conviction of former Illinois Gov. George Ryan.

The friend said this about the grilling by prosecutors of politicos close to someone they are after: “They are brutal. They threaten to send you off to the slammer and throw away the key. They threaten your wife, your family. They scare you so bad you could understand if a person admitted to something that wasn’t even true, if it would get the

feds off his back.”

So, will Madigan be indicted? I don’t know. If he is, you can bet the U.S. attorney is confident he can convince a jury—and higher courts

on appeal—that Mike Madigan is guilty of illegal corruption.

For many years, Jim Nowlan was a senior fellow and political science professor at the University of

Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He was a state representative, worked for three governors and publishes a weekly newspaper in central Illinois.

Unknown incident draws many squad cars

On Saturday, April 10 at approximately 6:10 p.m., Elmhurst Police responded to 552 S. Spring in Elmhurst for a disturbance that occurred on the sidewalk in front of the business. Shortly after arriving on scene, police received an additional call for assistance to respond to the area of Spring and Butterfield for a victim who had been injured during the disturbance. The victim was transported to Elmhurst Hospital by Elmhurst Paramedics and is currently being treated for his injury. Elmhurst Police are currently investigating the disturbance and anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Elmhurst Police Department at 630-530-3050.

Driver allegedly flees at high speed, later turns self in On April 7, police said that while an officer was on patrol, the officer observed David Ohene Me Sarpong, 19, of Bolingbrook, perform several traffic violations and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect allegedly refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed. During a phone conversation with the officer, the suspect admitted to performing the traffic violations and subsequently came into the police station, where the suspect was charged with fleeing/ eluding, reckless driving, failure to signal, driving on the shoulder of the roadway, speeding, tinted windows and no insurance.

Bar patron orders drink, reportedly talks rudely to other customers On April 7, police said officers responded to the 100 block of S. York at around 6:59 p.m. for the report of a subject who was bothering patrons and was asked to leave the premises. The complainant related after ordering a drink at the bar, the suspect approached a table of patrons and made offensive statements. The complainant requested to have the subject trespassed from the business.

The suspect was gone on arrival and officers checked the area with no results. The reporting officer will follow up with the suspect to serve the no-trespass notice.

Victim believes road rage suspect brandished handgun On April 5, police said officers responded to an area near Route 83 and Belden at around 11:15 a.m. for the report of a road rage incident.

The victim reported during a traffic altercation, the suspect brandished what he believed was a handgun and threatened to harm the victim. The suspect left the area prior to officer’s arrival. This case is pending investigation.

Juveniles found with airsoft rifle released to parents On April 6, police said officers responded for the report of two juveniles who were observed pointing an orange tipped airsoft rifle at people in the 100 block of N. York at around 5:56 p.m. The officers made contact with the juveniles and found one to have an airsoft rifle and airsoft pistol in his backpack. The suspects related they were showing the guns to their friends.

Parents requested the officers to confiscate and destroy both airsoft guns. The items were placed into evidence for destruction. The suspects were referred to the Peer Jury program.

SBAC urges support of Senate bill Urges use of COVID-19 relief funds to refund small business grants

According to a release received from the Governmental Affairs Committee of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Small Business Advocacy Council’s (SBAC) has issued a Call to Action on Illinois Senate Bill 1982 to refund grants made to small and local businesses and not-for-profit organizations using federal Coronavirus (COVID-19) relief funds.

According to the SBAC, S.B. 1982 calls for the allocation of 25 percent of the State of Illinois’ pro-

jected $7.549 billion in federal relief from the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan (ARP) to refund the Business Interruption Grant (BIG) Program administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Key components of SB 1982 include: • Offer $10,000 grants to small businesses (50 or less employees) with gross revenue over $100,000 that can demonstrate a 25 percent reduction in revenue between 2019

and 2020. Businesses in disadvantaged communities will receive an additional $2500 in funding; • Offer small businesses whose revenue did not exceed $100,000 in 2019 with grants totaling 10 percent of revenue loss the business sustained between 2019 and 2020. For example, a business that sustained $20,000 in lost revenue would receive a $2,000 grant.

Businesses in disadvantaged communities will receive an additional 2.5 percent of that lost revenue;

• Offer $2,500 grants to small businesses which launched in the Third and Fourth quarters of 2019 and, as such, are unable to demonstrate the requisite loss in revenue from 2019 to 2020. Businesses in disadvantaged communities will receive an additional $500 in funding; and, • First funded through Illinois’ allotment of the federal $2.2T Coronavirus Aid, Recovery and Economic Stability (CARES) Act, the IDCEO awarded small business

a total of $249M in Round 1 and Round 2 BIG funding. Of some 40,000 businesses that submitted BIG applications, only 8,974 received grant monies.

‘Virtual drinking sessions’ prove to be positive in pandemic times Less is more A recent survey by Alcohol.org, a leading provider of addiction treatment resources and information, of 4,430 adults (aged 21+) found that nearly all (92%) drinkers surveyed in Illinois say they consume less alcohol when virtually hanging out with friends as compared to when they are together in person. This may also be related to less peer pressure – it might be hard to call it an early night when out drinking with friends whereas virtually you can disappear with just the click of a mouse (or blame it on a bad WiFi connection!).

When questioned why they prefer virtual drinking sessions, more than half (68%) say the main advantage is that it’s safer than going out and mixing with other drinkers. More women felt this way (76%) than men (50%). Seven percent said being able to leave whenever they want is a big advantage over going to a bar, 11% say the main benefit of a virtual get together is that it’s cheaper than going to a bar, and 9% say the best part is not having a set closing time.

Finally, 5% of respondents appear to revel in the fact that they no longer have to queue for their drink.

Given that COVID-19 has been a disruption to the gathering of blood, our Council is teaming up with our blood services partner, Vitalant to host four drives in 2021 with a goal of gathering enough blood to touch more than 1,000 persons.

We need a total of 336 units of blood to attain our goal and, after our January drive col-

lected 86 units, we are just over 25% of our goal.

According to research conducted by the web site Alcohol.org, virtual drinking sessions during the pandemic have been a positive change to Illinoisans’ drinking habits.

• One in 10 have played drinking games via video call over the past year during the pandemic.

• 76% of women say the main advantage of virtual drinking is that it’s safer than going out and mixing with others.

• The average drinker consumes 2.2 alcoholic drinks during a 1-hour video call.

• The majority of singles abstain from alcohol when virtual dating.

• Two-thirds said the biggest advantage of virtual drinking is that it is safer than going out.

At the start of the pandemic, some may have assumed that virtual drinking sessions would have led to Americans drinking more alcohol at home than they did before at bars.

The rationale being that, in addition to cheaper drinks, drinking from the comfort of your own home means not having to wait in long lines, and potentially longer drinking sessions as there are no closing times at home.

Despite this, it seems as though virtual happy hours have actually had a more positive impact on our health and drinking habits than was initially thought.

Guilt adds to weight of grief By

much. We feel guilty for not fully appreciating the beautiful life we had. We feel guilty for conversations we might have had or could have had.

We feel guilty for being the one who survived. We feel guilty for everything and nothing and so much more.

I’m not saying it’s right or correct to feel this way. Nothing about grief is right or correct.

It just is. And it is real. Please understand that. And please allow anyone you love who is grieving this grace.

If grief itself weren’t bad enough, she often is accompanied by another formidable beast. I’ve encountered him lately, and his name is guilt.

Before I go any further, please suppress your instinct to tell me I shouldn’t feel any guilt because I loved fully, madly and deeply and went above and beyond to do whatever I could to help my husband.

I did. I know that. In my heart I know that 100 percent. And he knows it, too. To his core. I believe that fully.

But hear me out: Guilt is real.

Survivor’s guilt, caretaker’s guilt — both real.

Because what if it’s true?

When you are the sole person responsible for a loved one who is hospitalized (Thanks, again, COVID) you have to make decisions. Big decisions. Big, important medical decisions that you are, quite frankly, incapable and unqualified to make. And you aren’t given much time.

You don’t have two weeks to ponder a decision, it’s often made during a phone call or within less than a minute as a doctor lays out the scenario as best he or she can and leaves you with the end game.

I made decisions I never should have had to make. I encountered choices that never should have been thrust upon me.

But they were.

And, honestly, from the deepest recesses of my heart, I did my best.

I performed caregiving tasks I never thought possible. I learned medical procedures I never thought I’d ever need in my wheelhouse.

I watched someone slowly grow weaker and weaker and there was, seemingly, nothing I could do.

But now I look back and wonder if there was something that I could have done or said.

Could I have asked more questions? Did I ask the right questions?

I advocated strong and hard — beyond my normal abilities, really, but could I have advocated more?

When I was finally allowed, I visited every day for hours on end.

Was there more I should have been doing during that time? Why couldn’t I save him?

The guilt is real, people.

I wrote a column a few weeks back about what to say to a person who is grieving. I left out one piece of advice: Don’t negate their feelings. Don’t tell them they should feel one way or another because they do feel that way and their feelings are real and deep and worth acknowledging.

Guilt is often one of those feelings. We feel guilty for what we did or didn’t do —even if we have no idea what that might be. We feel guilty for not saying something, or saying too

Local food pantry volunteers meet unprecedented need with humor and grace Submitted by Joan Letourneau, EYFP volunteer communications consultant We all remember what we were doing and how we were feeling this time last year as shelter in place orders took effect, closing schools, restaurants, and many businesses and creating pandemonium as people scrambled to stock up so they could stay in.

The COVID-19 pandemic also threatened the continued operation of the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry (EYFP) at a time when those who had never needed to ask for food before were losing their jobs in record numbers and many of the pantry’s regular volunteers were in high-risk groups.

“Unprecedented became the word of the day,” Deb Rutter, a member of the EYFP operations team recalled.

“And there was always a new worry – do we need to wear a mask or not, is it okay to leave donated food in the pantry’s garage for a few days, how was this crazy thing transmitted?”

When the pantry lost four of its volunteer shift coordinators in one day, Deb stepped up to fill the gaps to the tune of over 700 volunteer hours in the past year.

Scott Bohaboy, a volunteer food recovery driver for EYFP, agrees there was quite a bit of uncertainty in the early days of the lockdown given the challenges created by the pandemic, but “the operations team did a great job of quickly implementing a number of significant changes in order to ensure the pantry could continue to serve clients safely,” he said.

Dozens of regular EYFP volunteers and those from several of the pantry’s community partners worked together to distribute more than 500 turkeys, 450 hams, and literally tons of sides, produce, and dairy items to neighbors in need during the holidays.

“Our clients were patient and kind and cheerful despite the wait, and it was just a delight to see their smiles,” May said. “Pure holiday magic!”

Pre-pandemic, Trish’s role often was to keep shoppers and volunteers moving smoothly through the pantry, so she naturally stepped into the “inside coordinator” role when EYFP moved to a drive-up model.

“We progressed from handing out a box of food to actual shopping lists and service as close as we could get to what clients had experienced in the past,” Janet Cox, a member of the EYFP operations team said. She coordinates volunteers for client service shifts and handles volunteer inquiries, which went up dramatically when COVID hit. “Flexibility comes from wanting to do the best you can for the clients, and making it work.

“I can only imagine the positive effects of allowing clients to select their food as opposed to making the choices for them,” EYFP volunteer Chuck Lesh said. He gave 500 hours this past year unloading deliveries, restocking the pantry and being a backup food recovery driver.

“While these changes created some additional operational complexity, all the volunteers did a great job staying flexible in order to ensure that the pantry could continue serving the community,” Bohaboy added.

May explained it this way: “You’d work a shift and get the hang of the new process, and then the next time you came in the procedure had changed – and that was okay. Both new and veteran volunteers rolled up their sleeves, jumped right into the fray, and found their rhythm.

It’s been a ton of fun to be with these marvelous, enthusiastic, problem-solving people.”

Rutter concurred.

“Our volunteers made it all possible. Every day they would come in and look to us for the plan for the day,” she said. “When a client yelled out their window ‘you’re doing God’s work’, one of the volunteers replied ‘no, we’re doing what Deb tells us to do.’ We’ve laughed many times about this path we have taken.”

“Our Saturday crew has wonderful camaraderie,” Ted Gregory, a regular client service volunteer, said. “Deb kept telling us how great we were doing – she is a lot of fun. And clients have been immensely appreciative – some made us masks, others wrote notes, many called us angels. Believe me, no one ever referred to me as an angel before!”

Holidays heighten the need The true impact of the pantry’s volunteers and the generosity of our community came into sharp focus during the holiday season last year.

Dubbed “Super Tuesday 1 and 2,” EYFP’s extra distributions on the Tuesdays before Thanksgiving and Christmas provided clients with complete holiday meals in addition to their regular November and December shopping.

“Super Tuesday 1 was an amazing day,” Rutter recalled. “It started with the arrival of the semi-truck from the food bank filled with 18,400 pounds of food, including the pantry’s regular order as well as the Thanksgiving

Grateful for contributions The overwhelming outpouring from donors and the surrounding community also helped ensure the pantry could continue offering an abundance of nutritious food without scaling back its service hours despite increased demand and new COVID-compliant protocols.

“Every shift, we have people stopping by with small bags of food – or entire trunks full – that they want to donate. And many times throughout the year, folks have handed me $100 bills to buy what we needed,” Rutter said. “They were thankful to be doing okay and wanted to give back.”

Since mid-March 2020, the pantry has seen its food distribution numbers jump by 30% and the number of new families served by nearly 50%.

EYFP serves residents of Elmhurst, Bensenville, Addison, Lombard, Villa Park, Hillside, Berkeley, and Oak Brook.

“Our volunteers, many of whom faithfully work one shift each week, stepped up to make sure the pantry could continue to operate during the pandemic,” EYFP Executive Director Kathie Watts said.

Bohaboy, who spent nearly 30 years in the corporate world and has kids in high school and college felt like it was time for him to give something back to a community that has had such a positive influence on him and his family.

“There are so many people struggling for a multitude of reasons, and the opportunity to help them out, even in a small way, is really rewarding,” he said.

“This past year, the news seemed saturated with dark and scary things, but thanks to EYFP, that’s not the America I see,” May said. “Our community is compassionate, motivated, generous, and kind.”

“Volunteering at the pantry has proven to be very purposeful work, and I was especially grateful to be able to help during the pandemic,” Gregory said. “It has been an adventure that has made these months more meaningful – I honestly look forward to my shifts.”

The initiative launches Cantigny’s partnership with Little Free Library (LFL), a nonprofit organization dedicated to building community, inspiring readers and expanding book access for all. It’s the world’s largest book-sharing movement, with more than 100,000 registered libraries in 108 countries.

York football team defeats Willowbrook Malaga sets program record with 16 receptions

The York football team engineered the perfect scenario on senior night.

The Dukes recorded a 25-23 victory over neighbor Willowbrook in a West Suburban Conference crossover game. Willowbrook came into the game ranked fifth in the state in the most recent Class 7A coaches poll.

The win moved York to 2-2 on the COVID-19-forced six-week spring season and gives it a legitimate chance to have its first winning season since 2011. The Dukes close the season with games against Oak Park-River Forest (Friday in Oak Park) and Proviso West (next Friday in the home finale).

“The kids played hard,” York coach Mike Fitzgerald said. “Willowbrook is a great program that has had a lot of success and they are a ranked team in 7A. This is a quality win against a good opponent.

The kids did a great job of handling adversity. The game went back and forth. Willowbrook was up a couple times. We stayed together, and all three phases played really well.

Offensively, we had a really good tempo to the game and that helped to wear them down because they had a lot of two-way players. Defensively, we did a great job of bending and not breaking and holding them to field-

goal attempts and not touchdowns.

It was a complete game by the entire team.”

Senior captain Luke Malaga, headed to Cornell University to continue his career, broke a York school record with 16 catches in the game for 120 yards.

Quarterback Max Assaad completed 24 of 35 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown. Sami Ayash had four catches for 103 yards and scored a touchdown.

Pat Kastner scored two touchdowns, while junior Max Hansmann kicked a 39-yard field goal. “Max’s kick ended up being pretty much the game-winner,” Fitzgerald pointed out.

Sophomore linebacker David Loch led the defense with 14 tackles and a fumble recovery. Junior linebacker Jeff Coglianese had 12 tackles and a forced fumble. Tyler Procajlo, a senior safety-linebacker, had eight tackles and a forced fumble.

“This is one of those games against a good opponent where we found a way to win and that’s the mark of a good program,” Fitzgerald explained. “Every year we have that stretch of Glenbard West, Hinsdale Central and Willowbrook. It’s very rough and we haven’t been able to get one of those since I have been here. Beating Willowbrook is a good thing for the program where we will be able to look back and say this is getting us going in the right direction and changing the mindset of the program. The past three weeks collectively have been against all good opponents. Our kids held their own. Even though we didn’t come

out on top of the other two, we went into those games expecting to win.

There has been a shift in mindset.”

And York was able to give its senior class a proper sendoff. “It’s an absolutely great way to celebrate this group,” Fitzgerald emphasized.

“This senior group is extremely special. They were freshmen when I was hired. They bought in to what we are doing here. These kids have been outstanding with their commitment and being great leaders for the program. It was awesome to get them that win on senior night against a great opponent.”

Now, York turns its attention to a possible 4-2 finish with only Oak Park and Proviso West standing in the way of that. “If we can get these two, it would be the first winning season since 2011,” the coach said.

“That’s been a goal for the senior group. They are trying to change the program and trying to get it back to where it was.”

Fitzgerald marvels at this year’s team and its mental resilience.

“It’s been a rough year for these kids. They have stuck together, continued to work together and have believed that the season was going to happen,” he said. “It’s been remarkable what I have seen from them.

It’s been a roller-coaster of different things with starting and stopping.

They stayed focused and have kept believing we would have a season and it paid off. It’s a testament to the seniors and their leadership.”

It was York’s first win over Willowbrook since 2015, snapping a four-game Warriors winning streak in the yearly gathering.

The Dukes then stopped the Warriors on the ensuing conversion run. Willowbrook had a chance to take the lead in the game’s final minute, but the Warriors’ hopes for a win ended when they missed a field-goal attempt.

Seniors leading the way for York girls volleyball team Dukes 4-2 through first six contests

York girls volleyball coach Patty Iverson has some senior firepower this spring.

Iverson cited the recent strong play of four seniors, in particular, as a key ingredient to the Dukes starting the COVID-19-shortened season 4-2 overall and 2-1 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division action.

Standout Gigi Barr has been back with the Dukes for a week, Iverson noted last week, “and has been unstoppable as an outside hitter,” Iverson said.

Barr, headed to Yale, had 15 kills in a recent match against Lyons Township.

Katie Norgle had 16 kills and 13 digs — a double-double — against Lyons. “Katie is our best defensive

player and her hitting is getting stronger every week,” Iverson said.

Elise Pedote has provided York a strong presence in the passing department. “Elise is our best passer,” Iverson noted. “Her accuracy is really amazing, and now that she is back on the court, our offense is improving.”

And Grace Meadows has provided valuable versatility for the Dukes this season. “Grace has filled both hitting and setting roles for us this season,” Iverson said. “She works extremely hard at every practice and in games.

These four seniors are doing a really great job leading the team.”

Iverson said one constant obstacle the Dukes have overcome is their lineup. “We have had a different lineup every game and different players available every game,” she said. “That has made us work together harder at practice to gain cohesiveness with people missing all the time.”

The back row has been York’s friend both offensively and defensively. “We are a very strong serving team and a good defensive team,” Iverson said. “Our offense is beginning to gel right now, but we

The wins keep piling up for the IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team.

The Knights capped off a busy four-match week with a 25-11, 25-8 victory over Ridgewood in Metro Suburban Conference play.

The win moved the Knights to 12-0 overall and 9-0 in MSC play.

Sophie Hurt led the Knights with 21 assists and four digs. Jess Sobon had 10 kills and three aces, while Claire Wagner had five kills, four digs and one ace. Lucy Russ had three kills and three digs. Kristen Brachmann had three kills, four digs and three aces. Ava Falduto finished with seven digs and one ace. Allie Geiger had two kills, while Isabella Muti had one kill and one block.

The Knights also were 25-16, 25-11 winners over Aurora Central Catholic in MSC action. Hurt had 12 assists, six kills and nine digs. Sobon had 10 kills, three digs and one ace.

Conroy helps pass substance use disorder legislation in House Mental Health Committee Taking a stand for those encountering substance use disorders, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, recently helped pass sweeping legislation in the House Mental Health Committee which expands coverage to critical access to care.

“We cannot afford to stand idly by while the victims of substance use disorders continue to struggle simply because coverage to resources they desperately need is inadequate,” said Conroy, chair of the House Mental Health Committee. “As an advocate for mental health and those confronting substance use, I’m acutely aware of inequities that exist in our system that do not go far enough to help the most vulnerable. That is why I’m sponsoring a bill which demands more from insurances providers, establishes access to grant dollars, and expands access to prescription drugs.”

Conroy’s House Bill 2589 amends the Substance Use Disorder Act by expanding commercial insurance coverage to addiction treatment medication while also opening the door to grant funds that will enable victims to receive better access to treatment.

Conroy’s legislation would help increase distribution of opioid antagonists, expand access to peer recovery specialists, provide housing public health fairs, promote harm reduction activities and provide connections to community partners.

“There are countless victims whose livelihoods would drastically improve if this bill is signed into law,” said Conroy. “It is critically important that we meet this moment in order to continue forging a path forward for those most in need.”

ICGS 3rd graders study Saint Patrick During the week of March 15, third graders at Immaculate Conception Grade School were asked to do research about St. Patrick. After completing their written reports on the famous saint, they drew accompanying pictures of St. Patrick. On Wednesday, March 17, the entire school enjoyed a St. Patrick’s Day themed dress down day to celebrate.

That week, the school’s Parents’ Club also hosted a St. Patrick’s Day themed “Nailed It!” bake-off competition FUNdraiser. Loosely modeled after the Netflix show with the same name, participating ICGS students and families purchased kits with all the supplies necessary to make their own St. Patrick’s Day cakes. A gift card was awarded for the best design.
