District 205 extends superintendent’s contract thru June of 2020

Annual salary of $225,951 will be reviewed at end of school

The School Board of District 205 has extended the contract of Dr. David Moyer for two years to June 30, 2020.

The annual salary of $225,951 will be reviewed at the end of the school year.

Board president Shannon Ebner stated that Dr. Moyer is a visionary leader who is committed to raising the bar and closing the achievement gap for all students.

“He believes this is public education’s moral imperative,” she said.

“And we concur.”

Ebner noted that the Board has adopted Student Achievement Action Plans and the related Community Compact in August, at which time Dr. Moyer stated, “Nothing is possible until the entire organization believes the moral imperative that all students can learn.”

Beyond that Ebner said Dr. Moyer believes that the best way to improve student achievement is to mentor teachers and administrators with the goal of increasing learning capacity in the classroom.

“He is also committed to improving

formative assessment and increasing student rigor and engagement,” Ebner said.

Over the past year and a half, Ebner said the Board has received feedback from both staff and community.

“Feedback came in a variety of forms,” she said. “Ours is an involved community and change is always difficult especially for the change agent.

Together we have stretched and grown.

“Following a thorough analysis of his work over the past 20 months, we are more than satisfied that he has

demonstrated progress toward meeting the District’s Key Performance Indicators and outcomes for all students as reflected in the annual student achievement objectives which are consistent with the District Operational Plan and our current research.”

“We’ve had some difficult issues that we as a community, have faced,” Emily Bastedo said. “I think Dr. Moyer is leading this district to provide an education product for our kids that is second to none.”

Karen Stuefen noted that the hallmark of a great leader is the group that

surrounds him.

“It’s not just the administration,” she said. “It’s the teachers and the staff working together. And the community is an important piece of that, too.

“We want to get back to being the district that other districts come to for best practices and leading the charge.”

Dr. Margaret Harrell commented that “the role of a leader is to have and consider all that information as we move forward.”

Dr. Moyer responded that, “This isn’t, never was, about me.”

Election night brings no surprises All three props in Addison Township pass

With only one contested race on the entire City slate in Elmhurst, Election night was a bit slow, but in a good way — no one was nervous about any close fights.

The contested election was the aldermanic seat in 6th Ward, where Jim Kennedy was seeking his second term. He was challenged by Ronald Sebonia, who only garnered about 28% of the vote and called Kennedy at 9 p.m. to concede. Kennedy received 70.5% of the vote.

In the race for Elmhurst Park District, three people ran for two posts and at the end of the night, it was long-time incumbent Mary E. Kies (2239 votes) along with Tim Sheehan (2824), who prevailed over Robert Smith (1793).

The District 205 School Board had three persons running for three seats and the vote was very close. Kara Caforio, a newcomer, received 2730 votes, while incumbents Margaret D. Harrell and Jim Collins received 2654 and 2642 respectively.

Bensenville elects DeSimone The race for Bensenville Village President came down to a vote of 1217-942 with Frank DeSimone topping Henry Wesseler. There is no incumbent in the race because the former Village President Frank Soto resigned from his post to accept a position on the governor’s staff in Springfield. For Bensenville Village Clerk, Nancy Quinn bested Amanda J. Mendoza by 1204 to 908 votes.

In the race for Trustee, the votes came down as follows: Armando Perez (1154) Ann Franz (1138), McLane Lomax (1071), David J. Majes-

ki (901), Joseph Pisano (842) and Sergiusz Zgrzebski (805).

Bulthuis prevails in VP President’s race In Villa Park, Deb Bullwinkel electing not to seek another term left a three-way race for Village President among Trustees Bob Taglia and Al Bulthuis and challenger Charles Pickerill. The race was close all evening, but in the end, it was Bulthuis who garnered the most with 1505 votes, followed by Taglia with 1099, and Pickerill who received 766.

Village Clerk Hosanna Korynecky, who ran uncontested, received 2716 votes.

In the race for Trustee, four people were seeking one of three seats.

In the end, the incumbents Nick Cuzzone and and Robert Wagner received the most votes with 2327 and 2056 respectively, followed by Cheryl Orlow Tucker with 1783 and David G. Cilella trailing closely with 1607.

With Bulthuis stepping up to serve as President, his Trustee seat will be open for him to appoint someone.

Props in VP both pass Villa Park also had two propositions on the ballot. The first involved issuing bonds to pay for remodeling, improving and building an addition to the existing Villa Park Public Library. It passed 2215-1234.

The other proposition was for a one-half cent increase in sales tax to use for infrastructure, specifically installing, replacing and maintaining the sanitary sewer, storm sewer and water main systems. That measured passed 2176-1234.

In the page one story of last week’s edition of the Elmhurst Independent (4-6–17 issue), there was a story about the Virgils, owners of the hoop house, suing the City for insisting they remove the hoop house from their property. In the story, it may have been unclear that it was the hearing officer’s opinion that “the buildings on the property covered approximately 2600 square feet of the 8,812.5 total square feet and, not including the mem-

brane structure, is at the maximum 30% lot coverage.

With the additional lot coverage of the 360 square feet that the impermeable membrane structure covers the land, the lot coverage is 33.6% and exceeds the maximum permissible lot coverage.” The Virgils have advised the Independent that they believe their structures cover less than 30% of the lot. They believe that portion of the statement is untrue and they intend to dispute it in court.

On Wednesday, April 5, members of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry, including president & CEO John R. Quigley, traveled to Springfield to join other west suburban business associations for Chamber of Commerce Lobby Day at the State Capitol.

The west suburban Chamber group visited the galleries of both the State House of Representatives and the Senate, where they were invited to join state legislators for a group photo on the dais.

Chamber members were able to briefly meet with Senator Chris Nybo (R), Senator Tom Cullerton (D), House Leader Jim Durbin (R) and Senator Kyle McCarter (R).

shrink the number of governmental units in our state,” Cronin said.

“Our experience with consolidation has proven successful, but it’s a very long process. There is a whole lot of minutiae.

“I’d like to form a group to work toward more consolidation. I think it’s the mark of good government to live lean and trim away the excess wherever possible.”

Cronin reminded the audience

that Illinois has the highest number of governmental units of all the states in the nation.

He said the biggest obstacle to consolidation are the cynics.

“There are those who say ‘it’s a good idea, but you’ll never get it done,’” Cronin said. “You have to work together, you have to have cooperation and it has to be a bi-partisan effort.”

The Chairman then talked about Transform Illinois, a coalition for efficient government supported by the Metropolitan Planning Council.

Transform’s mission is to improve the efficiency of governmental services in Illinois and to expand awareness of the economic impact of the current structure of government. It promotes finding ways to share services among units of government, eliminate redundant and ineffective units, revise funding mechanisms to reward efficiency and discourage the creation of new, single-purpose units of government.

Cronin offered ideas of agencies that could be consolidated.

“Several fire department districts could be consolidated,” he said.

“I have considered dissolving the Election Commission.”

(IRS) and local railroads to tour IRS’s new Elmhurst headquarters. The Railway Engineering-Maintenance

and Suppliers Association (REMSA), a non-profit trade group representing more than 340 railway engineers, contractors, consultants, and suppliers across the country, coordinated the event. The $5 billion maintenance of the railway industry supports more than 35,000 jobs nationwide. Thirty REMSA members maintain operations in Illinois.

Congressman Quigley has been a key supporter of the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) Program, which is investing billions to support critical infrastructure projects needed to improve Chicago’s rail efficiencies. As a member of the House Appropriations’ THUD Subcommittee, he has fought for increased funding for the Transportation Investment Generation Economic Recovery (TIGER) discretionary grant program.

In Illinois, approximately 40 freight railroads operate and maintain as much as 6,900 miles of track.

Fruitful Yield celebrates new, larger location

The Independent joined the Ambassadors of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI) for a ribbon-cutting event at Fruitful Yield, the all-natural health food store in downtown Elmhurst, which used to be at York & Third.

Fruitful Yield was founded 55 years ago by Elwood Richard, who chose the corner location on York. There are now 13 locations and more than 1600 people employed by the company.

In the past few years, owners recognized the store was outgrowing its space. It carried so much merchandise, it appeared crowded with narrow aisles. The ability to offer certain foods like fresh produce was out of the question because there was simply not enough room.

But that was then, this is now. The new location at 135 No. Addison St., right next to the new parking deck, has changed all of that.

People from Fruitful Yield’s Corporate office were on hand for the celebration that took place Friday, April 7, when the ribbon was officially cut and ECCI members were invited inside.

The Corporate level visitors indicated how pleased they were to be able to stay in Elmhurst and not have to move to a different town. They also added that it would not be possible without the Addison St. Parking Deck.

It happened to be “Beauty Day” at Fruitful Yield on Friday, one of the daily themes used during the grand opening week.

Guests lined up to try out different products and were invited to make their own scrubs and masques using essential oils and other ingredients perfectly suited to their own skin. There was also staff offering makeovers and helping visitors try out all-natural skin care and makeup choices available at the store.

The real story is how much lighter and brighter the space appears because it is considerably larger now. It has become so much more than it was in the previous location. In addition to all the things you may be used to buying at Fruitful Yield, there is now a grocery section that includes fresh produce.

There is also a smoothie bar, where you can purchase blended specialty drinks and juices, as well as soups,

chili and bakery items. The store carries Stumptown Cold Brew Roasters coffee and soups by Kettle Cuisine, available by the cup or in a 4-pound frozen bag to take home.

Other products include candies, all-natural toothpaste, homeopathic remedies, essential oil diffusers, all-natural mineral sunscreen and hair color.

“We feel what sets us apart is that our staff is trained in the products we carry,” said Molly Donegan, Marketing Coordinator for Fruitful Yield.

“Our employees can educate customers and help them find something that works for their particular need or concern. People are invited to come in and ask anyone to help them find the right items.”

Jennifer Hennen is very proud of the company, where she has been an employee for 33 years. She was actually sad to leave the former location, only because it had become “home” to her. She even wrote a poem about it.

Suspicious circumstances

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

April 1 A victim in the 100 block of E. Wilson told police that he woke to find his front picture window broken. The victim observed a rock in his living room right in front of the broken window. The victim does not know who could have broken the window and hasn’t had problems with any neighbors.

March 31-April 1 • A complainant in the 800 block of S. Cambridge told police that between the above dates, she found her front picture window had a large crack in the outer pane. The officer observed a rock under the bush in front of the window which had fresh marks, appearing as if it had been struck against something. The complainant does not know who could have broken the window and hasn’t had problems with any neighbors.

• A victim in the 200 block of May told police that between the above dates, an unknown suspect threw a rock against the window on the front of his house causing damage to a pane of glass. The victim’s wife reported hearing the shattering glass sometime after 11 p.m. the previous night.

• A victim in the 200 block of N. Hampshire told police that an unknown suspect broke a window on the front of the victim’s rental property between the above dates. The victim also reports that the suspect removed a thermostat from the property.

March 30 A complainant told police that she parked her vehicle in the lot at Elmhurst Center for Health in the morning and returned to it several hours later to find a shattered rear window.

Hospital security reviewed surveillance footage and advised complainant’s vehicle had not been tampered with the entire time it was parked in that location.

Disorderly conduct, trespass notice

March 31 A complainant at a restaurant in the 100 block of E. Butterfield told police at around 8:22 a.m. she was notified that six older males who frequent the restaurant daily were having vulgar conversations and offending other customers. The subjects were no longer on scene, but the complainant would like all six men served with trespass notices the next time they arrive at the restaurant.

Possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia, controlled substance

April 5 • Roque Casas, 35, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and pos-

• Police said officers observed Ivan Rojas, 19, of Elmhurst and a juvenile suspect seated in a parked car in the parking lot with the windows partially open. According to police, officers detected an odor of burning cannabis emitting from the vehicle. Police said that during a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers located cannabis. Both Rojas and the juvenile were cited for possession of cannabis.

• A victim in the 400 block of N. Highland Ave. told police at around 9:17 p.m. that he received a phone call from what he believed was Microsoft advising his license for Windows 7 had expired and he needed to call for an upgrade. An unknown suspect advised that the victim could only obtain payment in the form of gift cards. Victim purchased gift cards and provided the suspect with the gift card numbers via telephone.

April 4 Police said that subsequent to a suspicious vehicle in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 4:34 p.m., Andres Alcala, 20, of Melrose Park and Kendra Martinez, 20, of Addison, were found to be under the age of 21 and in possession of alcohol. Martinez was also found to be in possession of cannabis, according to police.

Alcala was cited on scene for possession of alcohol by a minor, while Martinez was cited at scene for possession of alcohol by a minor and possession of cannabis.

April 2 Kenneth Conway, 52, of Elmhurst, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis and driving while license suspended in the 600 block of W. North at around 12:56 a.m. Police said Conway was observed at the aforementioned location passed out in his vehicle with the door open.

April 1 • Timothy Jackson, 25, of Villa Park, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia near St. Charles and Prairie at around 2:01 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, a strong odor of cannabis was found to be coming from inside the vehicle, with a search locating cannabis, cash and a digital scale. Jackson was a passenger in the vehicle, according to police.

• Police said Kurt Vanos, 59, of Hillside, was stopped for an equipment violation near York and Roosevelt at around 6:08 p.m.

During a search of the vehicle, a controlled substance was located, according to police.

A second suspect admitted to ownership of the controlled substance. Vanos was charged with illegal transportation of alcohol, driving while license suspended, failure to signal and no insurance. The second suspect was released without charges pending laboratory analysis.

April 5 A victim in the 900 block of S. Mitchell told police at around 9:34 a.m. that after returning home from grocery shopping, she pulled her vehicle into her garage. While sitting in her vehicle, she observed someone describe as a black male, around 6 foot tall with a slim build wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, a partial black mask and blue jeans walking up her driveway and holding a black handgun. When the suspect entered the garage, the victim put her vehicle in reverse and backed out of the garage. The suspect fled on foot and entered a grey/silver 4-door sedan and left the area northbound on Mitchell Avenue.

March 31 A complainant at a car dealership in the 400 block of W. Lake St. told police at around 6:05 p.m. that there were three suspects described as black males inside the dealership attempting to purchase a vehicle with what appeared to be a fraudulent Kentucky driver’s license.

All three males left in three different vehicles before an officer arrived. Much of the information needed for the application did not match, which was what raised the suspicions of the complainant.

March 30 Police said that subsequent to a call for possible drug activity at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North at around 11:13 p.m., Anthony Talarico, 24, of Villa Park, and Jamie Bach, 31, of Wheaton, were located. According to police, Talarico was found with a smoking pipe and needle in his hand, and admitted to using heroin and was in possession of crack cocaine. He was also wanted out of the Villa Park Police Department, according to police. He was charged with DUI drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and no valid driver’s license. Bach was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and was also wanted out of Will County.

Walnut told police that between the above dates, an unknown suspect(s) entered the attached garage which had been left open and entered an unlocked vehicle. A bicycle was stolen from the garage. Nothing appeared to be missing from the vehicle.

• Two incidents of burglary to a vehicle were reported in the 100 block of N. Walnut between the above dates. In the first incident, a victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered her unlocked vehicle that was parked in the driveway and removed an unknown amount of change. The victim’s garage door had also been opened by the suspect(s), but nothing appeared to be missing. In the second incident, a victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked vehicle parked on his driveway and rummaged through the glove compartment and center console. Nothing appears to have been taken.

• A victim in the 400 block of S. Holly told police that between the above dates, an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked vehicle, rummaged through the glove compartment, and stole loose change from the center console.

April 4 A victim in the 600 block of Parkside told police at around 7:28 p.m. that he was notified by his credit card company of suspicious charges on his account. Visa reported that an unknown suspect charged a purchase from Saks Fifth Ave. The victim has his Visa card in his possession and has not authorized its use to anyone.

Feb. 14-April 3 A complainant in the 100 block of N. Evergreen told police that she received an overdraft notification for $11. An unknown suspect(s) opened a bank account using her name. The victim started a fraud case with the bank and was advised to monitor her credit score.

Jan. 23-April 3 A complainant at a company in the 700 of N. York told police that a suspect came into the business to purchase truck parts, told them to charge it to the company account of VP Xpress LLC, and used a passport as identification for the purchase. VP Xpress later called the complainant stating the suspect does not work for the company, nor did they authorize a purchase. On April 3, the suspect attempted to make a purchase using the same passport, but left the area before he could be apprehended.

The suspect left the passport at the business.

April 2 Linda Wynn, 57, of Melrose Park, was charged with retail theft at a store in in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 5:17 p.m.

Police said store security reported observing Wynn remove two jewelry items from their packaging and place them on her person.

Wynn then completed some transactions and left the store without paying for the two rings, according to police. Store security detained her and escorted her back to the store.

April 1 A victim told police that he had his car serviced at a dealing shop in the 400 block of N. York at around 2:28 p.m. He placed two Rolex watches in the center console of the vehicle prior to having the vehicle serviced. He later reported one of the watches was missing.

A search of the suspect and premises did not locate the missing watch. A review of video footage failed to show the suspect with the watch.

March 31-April 1 Joel Wieland, 29, of Elmhurst, was charged with theft in the 200 block of N. Bonnie Brae at around 4:51 p.m. A victim told police that five of her rings were missing, and Wieland was taken into custody, according to police.

Jan. 1-April 1 A victim in the 100 block of S. Poplar told police that an unknown suspect(s) used his personal information to open a Verizon Wireless account between the above dates. The victim received a bill from Verizon and was advised by Verizon’s fraud department to file a police report.

More crime news Hit and run knocks rider off bicycle A hit-and-run accident was reported on April 5, after officers responded to a report of a vehicle vs. bicyclist accident near North and Illinois at around 3:20 a.m. The victim told police a small dark colored 4-door sedan and white pickup truck approached him from behind. While passing him, the rear passenger door of the sedan was opened as if to intentionally attempt to hit the victim with the door.

The sedan did not succeed in hitting the victim. The pickup truck then struck the victim with an unknown part of the vehicle, causing the victim to fall over his handlebars and into the roadway. The pickup truck’s mirror broke off and was left at the scene.

The victim believes that she may have been followed from the Jewel Food Store located at York & Butterfield Rd. Police believe that this incident may be related to a similar type of vehicular hijacking that occurred in Westchester a short time later.

Elmhurst History Museum announces spring programs, events The Elmhurst History Museum invites young families to explore the themes of the newly installed “House & Home” exhibit from the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., with some new options to keeps kids engaged and learning this spring.

First up is a School’s Out Family Workshop on Friday, April 14 from 1-2:15 p.m., geared for children of all ages with their parent or caregiver. Families will share stories of their own homes and create a keepsake using a photo of the home.

Guests can also decorate a brick with the photo, phrases, paints and more. The workshop takes place in the Elmhurst History Museum’s Education Center, located at 120 E. Park Ave. The fee has been reduced and is now is $5 per child for members of the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, and $7 per person for non-members. No charge for participating adults. Conroy votes to pass Comprehensive Property Tax Relief Every homeowner in the state would keep more money in their pockets under a comprehensive tax relief package passed by state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, increasing the value of key property tax credits for families, seniors and veterans. While Gov. Bruce Rauner has discussed freezing property taxes, Conroy’s action goes further to actually cut property taxes and reduce the burden on local homeowners.

“It’s heartbreaking to hear stories from working parents, veterans returning home from service and seniors who face being forced out of our community because of skyrocketing property taxes,” Conroy said. “This measure would bring savings to all homeowners in the state while providing additional relief for those who need it most.”

Conroy co-sponsored House Bill 156, a comprehensive package of property tax relief measures that was

approved by the House on Thursday.

This measure provides homeowners with relief above and beyond the freeze discussed by the governor by increasing the value of key property tax exemptions that help homeowners reduce the taxable value of their homes and cut their tax bills. Beginning in 2018: • All homeowners would be eligible for an annual $8,000 exemption on their primary residence; • Seniors on fixed incomes would see lower property tax bills, as an exemption for homeowners over the age of 65 would increase from $5,000 to $6,000 annually; • More veterans would be able to receive property tax relief, as returning service members certified 20-30 percent disabled who are currently ineligible for property tax relief would be provided a $2,500 annual exemption.

All veterans over the age of 75 would be able to receive a $2,500 exemption

as well.

This bill also creates a new property tax freeze for disabled homeowners receiving Supplemental Security Income from the federal government and expands tax credits provided to longterm homeowners.

“Property taxes are the number one issue for residents in my community, and it is long past time for Democrats and Republicans alike to come together and provide the relief that local families need,” Conroy said. “As more and more families are choosing to leave Illinois in search of a lower cost of living, this bill is a necessary step to ensure our community is affordable for those who want to live here.”

Valle does a bit of clowning with one of the cardboard cut-outs available on Saturday, April 8 when a fundraiser was held for the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. Proceeds support ESO concerts and programs, including family concerts, instrumental group performances at local schools, the Stanger Young Artists Auditions and more.

For the 2016-17 school year, seven Mary Wheeler Scholarship awards of $2500 each were awarded by the West Suburban Teachers Union, Local 571, of the American Federation of Teachers to children and grandchildren of members. Winners exhibited the highest academic standards and involvement in school and community service. The third proposition was about property consolidation and whether or not the Township should pursue consolidation of government entities which have no elected oversight at the present time. That measure was passed with a vote of 61411122.

ICCP awards 2017 Wisbrock Scholarship IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) has selected sophomore Suzy Maloney as the 2017 recipient of the Phyllis K. Wisbrock Service Award Scholarship, given to a female sophomore for exemplary community service.

Suzy is a Knight Ambassador, a member of the Math team, Spanish Club, Student Council, Yearbook staff, and is on the ICCP Tennis, Basketball and Soccer teams. She is a Eucharistic Minister, volunteers at school math and trivia competitions, assists with the annual Coaches vs Cancer event, and helps collect for Misericordia Candy Days.

Every Saturday in the fall and spring, Suzy also volunteers for Access Sports, an organization which provides opportunities for disabled children to play various sports

with the help of volunteers. As a “soccer buddy” with Access Sports, Suzy has logged more than 75 hours of her time since sixth grade in order to help bring these children joy through sports.

She hopes to become a part of the Access Sports Board to help with fundraising and event planning in the future.

Suzy recently joined the ICCP Relay for Life team, Knights Conquer Cancer, to raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer. Overall, Suzy has accumulated over 100 hours of service since the start of her freshman year.

She had been surrounded by her loved ones during her illness and passed quietly on her own terms. Our hearts ache for her but we are glad she is with loved ones in Heaven and free of all pain.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Jack D Scaggs and beloved son Ralph Scaggs. She is survived by her daughters, Sheila Scaggs and Dale Scaggs Brash Freda; grandchildren, Roy Freda, Shirley Freda, Jessica Freda, Erica Brash, Timothy Scaggs, Heather Scaggs-Benda; and, her great-grandchildren, Brittany Benda, Alexis Benda, Logan Benda, Jack E Scaggs, Tyler Scaggs, Luz Sanabria and Sara Sanabria.

Shirley met and married the love of her life, Jack Scaggs in Chicago. They enjoyed a wonderful life together with travels far and wide across the continental US, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean and Europe. In their later years, their greatest love was their home in Waupaca, Wisc., where they spent their summers at the lake with friends and family.

Shirley loved being around people and helping them, when the family moved to Elmhurst, IL in the late 1960’s, she retired from teaching and started a very successful real estate career. She was also active in the Elmhurst Women’s Club.

Shirley was always a very positive person who would not want to be remembered with tears, she had expressed her wish to have a party and cake on her passing. There were few things Shirley like better than to enjoy lunch out with friends and family.

To honor that wish, her family held a memorial lunch at one of her favorite places, the Clubhouse Restaurant in Oakbrook on Saturday, April 8. And

Butch Navarro, a member of the Knights of Columbus, reported that his fellow Knights and friends supported this fundraiser through monetary donations, prize donations, purchasing dinner tickets and serving at the event. More women attended than ever before.

Real Estate/Business City approves addition of Rapid Response Advanced Life Support Unit The Elmhurst City Council, at their meeting on April 3, approved the addition of a Rapid Response Advanced Life Support (ALS) Unit to the Elmhurst Fire Department resources.

This subject has been under review and discussion for the past several weeks by the Public Affairs and Safety Committee, which met on February 13 & 27, and March 13 & 23. The committee was asked to consider the referral from Alderman Chris Healy and Alderman Marti Deuter regarding the evaluation of Emergency Medical Services for the City of Elmhurst and to determine an acceptable level of providing care within necessary time frames to deliver the best patient outcomes. For over four decades the use of contract paramedics has proven to be an efficient and effective way to deliver Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to the community. However, an increase over time in EMS calls in the City of Elmhurst has created a different set of service level demands. The rising number of medical calls has created a much greater need for additional trained paramedics, which is often difficult in a department of Elmhurst’s size. In the last five years, the City has seen a 15% increase for EMS calls for service while the corresponding calls for fire service have been relatively flat.

The Public Affairs & Safety Committee re-

viewed detailed information on a specific area of calls including those calls where an engine arrives before an ambulance, when mutual aid is not involved. There were 112 calls (or 4.9% of total calls) of this nature.

Chief Freeman presented the Committee with three options for accommodating this need: the addition of a third ambulance, Advanced Life Support (ALS) Non-Transport Assist Apparatus and/or a Rapid Response ALS Unit. Staff’s recommended option was the Rapid Response ALS Unit because it is the most flexible and cost effective option. The Committee concurred, and that was the recommendation that was passed on to the City Council.

The Rapid Response ALS Unit will be contracted with Metro Paramedics as part of the City’s ambulance service contract. The Rapid Response ALS Unit would consist of a SUV equipped with necessary ALS equipment and medicines and staffed by one Metro paramedic. The Rapid Response ALS unit would allow for immediate response to a call for assistance in the event that both Medic 1 and Medic 2 are committed to emergencies. This unit would have everything needed to provide immediate

Timothy Christian names Plaisier boys basketball coach Brings multiple years of high school experience to new position

While Timothy Christian’s boys basketball coach is new to the program, his philosophy is not.

Timothy Christian recently announced the hiring of Scott Plaisier as its new boys basketball coach.

He replaces Jack LeGrand, the school’s athletic director who is focusing all his efforts on both the middle-school and high-school athletic programs.

“When the job opening came up, I saw it as an opportunity to use basketball with my faith, which I feel is an incredible opportunity,” he told the Independent. “Being able to transform the lives of young men is very appealing and to be able to do that through basketball and faith at the same time doesn’t come along very often. Jack LeGrand uses the phrase ‘Building men of integrity.’

Using athletics and education to do that is very powerful.”

Plaisier, a Lombard resident, was the boys basketball varsity assistant for the last two years at Stagg High School. Prior to that he was the girls varsity assistant at Sandburg High School in Orland Park for four years and the sophomore boys coach for five years. He also coached the freshmen boys at Sandburg.

Plaisier teaches in the physical education department at Sandburg where one of the classes he teaches for juniors and seniors is outdoor adventure education, which includes rock-climbing and kayaking instruction. “There’s a lot of team-building involved in that class,” he said.

Plaisier grew up in Hudsonville, Mich., where he attended Unity Christian High School. He played at Calvin College in Grand Rapids

(where he started all four years and was a team captain for three of his years there) and also played for a year professionally in The Netherlands. His wife, Erica, is a 1994 graduate of Timothy Christian and two of his children attend the school.

“Scott has a true passion for basketball and the young men he coaches,” said LeGrand. “It will be exciting to watch Scott continue to develop young men not only with basketball, but also with life lessons. He is a passionate coach who will have his guys ready to play with a high level of energy at all times.

He will bring knowledge, energy and passion each day to practice and games. He has a shared vision to develop champions for Christ as well as in the athletic arena. We are looking forward to the next phase of Timothy Christian basketball.”

Timothy Christian Schools Superintendent Matt Davidson added: “Scott will lead the continuation of our success in the boys basketball program while also bringing in his own ideas and style. We have a strong foundation that has been laid by those before him and he has an excellent mentor in Jack. Scott is a man of God. His enthusiasm is contagious and he will be a great example for our young men. His collaborative and relational style of coaching fits well with our mission. Scott subscribes to our athletic philosophy of striving to win on the court/ field, but more importantly learning what it takes to win at life.”

Plaisier agrees he’s walking into a stable program at Timothy. “Jack LeGrand has done a really nice job here the last nine years,” he said.

“He’s a great coach who is a great mentor to the kids. The program is strong and the basketball tradition here is really good. The school is doing some innovative things with the new middle school and the new gym going up. Now is a great time for the basketball program to

continue to stay on the course it’s been on and continue to make big strides.”

Plaisier lauded his family for its continued support of his coaching.

“Whether you are a head coach or an assistant coach, there is a lot of time that goes into this,” he

said. “You have to have a supportive family and I’m thankful I have one.”

Plaisier said his goal for the program going forward is simple. “We want a culture where when people see Timothy on the schedule they know they are in for a battle wheth-

er it’s at our place or in their gym,” he said. “I love to push the tempo and force teams to play at our place.

I also preach the fundamentals of the game, which will be key for us, for sure. I expect the boys to play and compete at a high level game in and game out.”

Timothy Christian boys track coach John VanderKamp saw many positives at the recent Metro Suburban Conference indoor meet.

VanderKamp was pleased with the performances in particular from Chris Brooks (7.3 in the 55 dash), Isaiah Whitaker (25.9 in the 200), Andrew Vogt (58.2 in the 400), Tommy Troxel (2:14 in the 800), Will Terpstra (5:15 in the 1,600), Clint Fincher (11:22 in the 3,200) and Xavier Ross (41-11 in the triple jump and 20-6 in the long jump).

“We have excellent senior leadership and we have a lot of young athletes with good potential,” said VanderKamp.

Timothy heads to the Houseward Invitational in Hudsonville, Mich., on April 15. That meet features 15 teams.

Timothy Christian baseball team sweeps Walther Christian

The Timothy Christian baseball team started the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division portion of its schedule on the right foot by sweeping a two-game series from Walther Christian.

In an 8-3 win over Walther in Elmhurst, Timothy jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings.

Joey Davidson had four hits, including a double. In the first inning, Jimmy Allen walked, stole second and scored on a double by Noah Marrera. Davidson’s double scored Brady Klooster (running for Marrera). Nick Huisman reached on an error, which scored Davidson. Graham Loughead, running for Huisman, scored on another error.

In the Timothy second, Allen scored on a Marrera sacrifice fly and Josh Anderson scored on a fielder’s

choice.

Davidson singled in the fourth, stole second and scored on Brian Schiff’s double. In the fifth, Anderson walked, advanced to second on a balk and third on a passed ball and then scored on a Davidson single.

Huisman was the winning pitcher.

He struck out eight and allowed three hits in five innings.

In the finale in Melrose Park, Timothy posted 12 runs from the third to the fifth inning en route to a 12-1 five-inning win over Walther. Timothy had 12 hits.

Jimmy Allen was the winning pitcher. Marrera hit a home run, while Allen had two doubles. Schiff, Connor Gwaltney and Jonny Strube each had a double.

In a seven-run fourth inning, Timothy scored on an error, a single by Davidson, a double by Strube, a single by Schiff and a double by Gwalt-

ney. Schiff, Allen, Anderson, Strube and Gwaltney collected multiple hits.

Allen fanned 12 in five innings.

He allowed two hits and walked one.

In other recent action, Timothy lost a 14-6 non-conference game to Lisle. Timothy tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning when Marrera singled and advanced to second on an error. Klooster, again running for the catcher, scored on a Davidson single.

Timothy trailed 11-1 by the fifth inning, but put up four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Schiff had a double in the game and finished with three hits and two RBI. Davidson also drove in a pair of runs.

Timothy wrapped up its trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., with an 11-7 win over Lake Center Christian out of Canton, Ohio.

Timothy took a 3-0 lead after the first inning and led 8-3 after four.

The Trojans had 10 hits.

The IC Catholic Prep baseball team returned from its spring trip to South Carolina and fared well in a recent three-game stretch.

The Knights opened last week with a 9-3 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win against Fenton.

IC Catholic Prep overcame a 2-1 early deficit by scoring three runs in the third inning and later blew the game open with four runs in the sixth inning. The Knights had 10 hits in the game.

Trey Morris went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Austin Reed went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. John Hoffman was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. IC Catholic Prep followed that up with an 11-1 MSC crossover win against St. Edward. The Knights used a six-run fifth inning that helped to enact the 10-run rule in the sixth.

Sutton went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Morris had a hit and two RBI. Reed went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Russ had a hit and an RBI. Hoffman went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. West had a hit and an RBI. Michael Hoffman scored a run and had an RBI. Amari Reed had a hit and scored two runs. Seven Knights players had at least one hit.

Sutton doubled in the contest and Hoffman had a triple. The Knights continued to be aggressive on the

base paths with eight stolen bases.

Hoffman and Austin Reed each had two steals.

West was the winning pitcher. He allowed three hits and fanned four over five innings. Alfonso Cepeda pitched the sixth inning and had a rare four-strikeout inning.

IC Catholic Prep then dropped a 6-5 MSC Blue game to Fenton. The Knights led 4-1 after four innings, but Fenton scored five runs in the fifth to take the lead.

Morris went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Austin Reed went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Salvi had a hit and two RBI. Austin Reed doubled and Morris hit a triple. The Knights stole three more bases.

The York boys water polo team was busy during a recent five-game stretch.

York scored a 14-8 West Suburban Conference win over Oak Park-River Forest, lost 7-6 to Lyons and 9-2 to Fenwick. York downed Niles West 9-8 and lost 12-11 to St. Ignatius.

In the Lyons Township conference game, Isaac Marlott had four goals.

“Isaac is a sophomore varsity starter,” noted York coach Brian Drumm.

“It’s really impressive how much confidence he showed on the offen-

sive end against a perennial Illinois water-polo power such as Lyons.”

Alex Marlott had seven goals in the win against Niles West. “Alex usually leads us in scoring, but he was unstoppable in that game,” Drumm observed.

York’s coach has been impressed with his team’s improvement with transition defense. “We’ve been really good on transition defense,” said Drumm. “The better teams in the state do a good job countering and we’ve been able to get back in front of Gary (York goalie Derwin) pretty consistently.”

Drumm has watched his team’s offense take hold of late. “Every year it’s a process getting everyone on the same page offensively,” he said.

“We’re just now starting to hit our

stride as a team on offense.”

In terms of goalie play, Drumm has been thrilled with Derwin’s efforts. “Gary has been lights out,” said Drumm. “After letting a few slip by against OPRF, he refocused over spring break and really started to lock in his angles. He’s meeting the ball in front of him now and cutting off angles well. We’re really excited about his improvement so far this year.”

Mike Sullivan has been another key performer in the early part of the season. “I’ve been really happy with our bench players,” said Drumm.

Timothy Christian boys tennis team defeats Willowbrook Rhiner off to 4-0 start for Trojans

The Timothy Christian boys tennis team recorded a recent 5-2 non-conference win against Willowbrook.

The win moved the Trojans to 2-2 overall.

“They were all close matches,” said Timothy Christian coach Keith Mills. “Willowbrook is a much-improved team. There were four threeset tiebreaks and we won three of the four.”

Sophomore Jack Rhiner was off to a 4-0 start through late last week at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles.

Timothy has logged only five practices and four matches thus far.

“We are beginning to compete,” said Mills. “We are learning to win the points and the match. We have several new players this year in the lineup and they need experience.”

Timothy has been without returning No. 1 player Nate Daniels due to injury. “He’s close to returning and may return at doubles,” said Mills.

Zach Huerta was 2-1 at No. 1 singles through late last week. Rhiner

and junior Joel Daniels give the team further strength in the singles division. Daniels is the defending No. 2 singles conference champion. “Second singles seems to be a strength this year with Jack or Joel,” said Mills.

Trevor Hoogendorn, Mills noted, has locked up a spot at No. 1 doubles. “We’re trying to find him a partner,” he said. “His brother, Austin (a junior), has played well and is the surprise of the season so far. He has switched from first and second doubles.”

Sophomore James Shervheim also has played well. “James is a sophomore with tons of potential and had a nice win against Willowbrook (6-7, 7-6, 12-10),” Mills said.

Timothy has 27 players in the program. “We have great numbers for a small school and that gives us lots of options as certain players rise up to improve,” said Mills. “So far, it’s been a mixed bag due to lack of practice times and new players coming up to the varsity. We have been up and down in most matches. We can’t keep things rolling when we are winning. Hopefully we will fix that soon with some warmer weather ahead.”

The York softball team was a recent 8-6 winner over Metea Valley in non-conference play.

The win pushed York to 5-0 on the season.

The Dukes had 15 hits in the game and came back from a 5-2 deficit at one point.

Katherine Karnatz went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Izzy Smith was 4-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Andrea Meager had a hit and an RBI. Sydney Fuglsang had a hit, two runs scored and an RBI. Madison Collins went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Julia Der-

Lauren Wojcik was the winning pitcher. She struck out four over seven innings.

Through the first five games, Smith was hitting .750 with 14 hits in 19 at-bats. She had four doubles, two homers and 12 RBI. Kroll was hitting .700 with 10 hits in 16 atbats. She had two triples and six RBI. Karnatz was hitting .600 with 11 hits in 19 at-bats. York boys volleyball team wins T-F North tournament Dukes 7-3 through first 10 matches

It’s been all systems go thus far for the York boys volleyball team.

The Dukes were off to a 7-3 overall start and won the Thornton-Fractional North tournament.

“We’re much more balanced this year and due to numerous injuries, we’ve had several reserve players step in and contribute well,” said York coach Ken Dowdy.

Dowdy has especially taken notice of the team’s defensive play. “Our defense has been an improvement from last year at this point of the season,” he said. “We’ve been able to dig some balls that I thought we had no chance to get a touch on, which always has the ability to change a match. It’s a really scrappy group with Sam Jordan-Wood, Zach Hughart, Jack Crowley and RJ Lesus leading the way on defense.

“Our defense has been really good so far and our serve-receive is farther along than I would have thought at this point in the season. We still are learning to overcome some of the more aggressive servers from other teams and fighting to overcome their service runs. At this point, I feel it’s more mental than anything else when we have struggled, and as a coaching staff we’ve emphasized focusing on the next ball. We’re definitely making strides in that regard and I’m positive our consistency will improve. We emphasize serve-receive is the most important contributor to the success on the court and therefore we spend a lot of time in practice on it and will continue to do so. We have struggled with blocking and have committed as a team to spending more time in practice breaking it down. We certainly have the potential to be a good blocking team, but a lack of a lot of varsity experience, especially at the pins, has contributed to some struggles in that area. While a work in progress, the guys understand we can go from being

a good team to an even better team if we focus and shore up that area of our defense.”

Serving also has been a bright spot.

“Likewise our serving has been really consistent and aggressive and we’ve been able to go on some service runs that have helped us close out matches when the offense has struggled,” said Dowdy, who lauded Rio Diaz and Matthew Howlett for their serving-line efforts.

Dowdy said the squad’s front line has been hampered by injury. “In seven years I’ve never had this many injuries in a season, let alone the first month,” he said. “We’ve had six guys out at various times with injuries, so we’re still trying to get in a rhythm offensively.”

Right-side hitter Dylan Kalchik missed the season-opener, but is playing well since. “Dylan is starting to heat up and that’s a great sign,” said Dowdy. “He has an aggressive, hard swing.”

Outside hitter Evan Haug also missed a recent stretch due to injury.

“He’s another senior pin hitter that we’ll rely on heavily once he gets healthy,” the coach said. “He also brings the best back-row attack we have on the team.”

Senior John Goehl is able to play either pin position for the Dukes. He had 17 kills in a recent quad the Dukes competed in. “John is a converted setter who has a high ceiling,” said Dowdy. “He played very well in our quad. The sky is the limit for him. He can jump out of the gym.”

Middles Michael Pennel and John Nosek also are big factors up front.

“Michael and Kohn really are the key to our offense when our serve-receive is on point,” Dowdy explained.

“They have the ability to hit a variety of quick-tempo shots when we are in system.”

Howlett, Michael Dirmish and John Sopko add strong depth to the pins.

“They have contributed when called upon this season,” said Dowdy.

Michael Deaton also was cited for

his early-season contributions. “He filled in for John Nosek at the middle position when John missed the first four matches,” said Dowdy. “He’s one of our defensive specialists and he provided stability and enthusiasm in John’s absence and is really such an unselfish teammate. ‘Deats’ is definitely one of the players I’m most appreciative and proud of so far this season.”

Diaz, the team’s setter, is in his third year on the varsity. “Rio continues to improve,” said Dowdy. “He has made a great effort in getting better defensively and with blocking. He’s made his greatest strides in regards to being more vocal and leading this team.

I really couldn’t ask for more in that regard. We graduated nine seniors last year so the underclassmen really didn’t need to be vocal, but he’s stepped up more than I expected. He will only get better as he gets in sync with our hitters, especially the first-year varsity players from last year’s JV squad.”

Junior Ryan Schaner provides strong depth at the setting position.

“Ryan is having a good spring after suffering an early injury,” said Dowdy.

“He’s a real competitive player and continues to improve.”

Dowdy also likes the team’s resolve thus far. “We’re a little ahead of last year’s team in regard to fighting through adversity—not only fighting through the numerous injuries we’ve suffered, but also fighting through momentum-changing rallies and service runs from our opponents,” he said.

“We’ve been able to win some threeset matches that we may have lost last year against good teams.”

Dowdy noted the team’s three losses have come against teams with a combined 29-0 record through late last week.

“Our schedule definitely is front-loaded with some of the best teams in the state,” he said. “We know where we need to improve as well as knowing where we stand against some of the better teams in the state. Considering all our injuries and the mixedup lineups, I’m very encouraged by

The York boys tennis team was 2-4 through its first six dual meets of the season.

York defeated Nazareth Academy 5-2 and Rockford Auburn 4-1. The Dukes lost to Wheaton North 5-4, Benet Academy 5-2, Chicago Payton 5-2 and Wheaton-Warrenville South 5-4.

New Dukes coach Shawna Zsinko noted her team only played with what she considers a full-strength lineup against Wheaton-Warrenville South and Nazareth.

Of note in the Wheaton North match was Lion Hoelzel’s match against North’s Kevin Lee. “Lion is a great player, but Kevin’s game is consistency,” said Zsinko. “I can’t wait for the rematch.”

York won at first, second, fourth and fifth doubles against Wheaton

North. The Dukes won at No. 2 singles and first through fourth doubles against Nazareth. Against Wheaton-Warrenville South, York won at third and fifth singles and second and third doubles.

York was shorthanded over spring break in the matches against Benet and Payton. “We’ve had to play many different lineups due to illness, injury and vacations,” said Zsinko.

Zsinko noted her full-strength lineup probably would include Hoelzel, Austin Taylor, Jalen Macatangay, Jakob Alberti and Jack Fennell in singles. Jacob Wit-Luke Brigman, Tom Vogt-John Wheeler, Matt Dillon-Kevin Rachwalski, Domenic Conversa-Anshul Shah, Jared Doan-Josh Mirretti and Tristan Contant-Luke Mazzocco at doubles.

“The team has really pulled together to play whatever position I need them to play,” said Zsinko.

“Our junior varsity has been accommodating with playing up as well. As a new coach, I’m still figuring out

everyone’s game. We have not been able to have as many practices as I would like because of the weather, so we are all learning as we go along.

Our singles lineup is getting stronger.

Our doubles has been up and down at the top of the lineup and very strong at the bottom.”

Hoelzel, a sophomore German exchange student and Wit are the most seasoned players on the team as far as tournament play, Zsinko noted.

She added Wheeler, Vogt, Taylor (a sophomore) and Brigman (sophomore) also bring key experience.

“I like the cohesiveness, the positivity and the leadership in this team,” said Zsinko. “As the season progresses, I am confident we will continue to improve and will pull out wins instead of close losses, especially if our lineup is at full strength.”

In terms of record, Rachwalski was 8-1 in doubles play. Mirretti had a 4-0 overall mark, while Mazzocco had a 3-1 record through late last week.

Dukes take 2 of 3 from Downers Grove North

The York baseball team went 3-1 last week, winning at a .750 clip to keep the early season momentum positive.

The Dukes started the week with a 3-2 West Suburban Conference Silver Division loss to Downers Grove North in eight innings.

York led 2-1 in the fifth inning, but Downers North scored a run in the sixth and one more in the eighth.

Austin Gelsomino had two hits and Joey Chiappetta’s double was York’s only other hit on the day. Gelsomino and Elliott Achepohl each had an RBI. Gelsomino took the loss in relief.

He struck out two in 2 1/3 innings.

Burke Corcoran started and allowed five hits in 5 2/3 innings, while striking out four.

York came back to notch a 6-3 win against Downers North in Game 2 of the three-game series at the Downers Grove American Legion field.

York jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two innings and had seven hits in the game.

Jake Hadawi had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Nick Lee had a hit and three RBI. Mike Bernal had a hit and an RBI, as did Ryan Ross.

Ian Steinorth and Mike Pastuovic each had a hit. Ross and Steinorth had doubles.

Haldawi pitched five innings and allowed three hits, while striking out three to pick up the win. Charlie Pakenas pitched the last two innings and struck out two to earn the save.

York wrapped the series up with a 13-8 win over Downers North at the American Legion field.

York led 5-3 after two innings, but trailed 6-5 after three. York scored three runs in the fourth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh to pull away in a game that featured 27 hits (16 by York).

Bernal, Chiappetta, Pastuovic, Hadawi and Gelsomino each had two hits. Andrew Deardurff had one official at-bat, scored three runs, had a hit, drove in two and walked twice.

Chiappetta had three RBI. Ross, Tamaine Durr, Lee and Deardurff each had a double. Pastuovic had a triple. York swiped five bases, led by Steinorth’s two stolens.

Pakenas was the winning pitcher in relief. He pitched the final 4 1/3 innings.

York wrapped the week with a 6-5 win in eight innings over Addison Trail in a WSC crossover game. The win moved York to 8-1 overall.

Bernal’s hit in the bottom of the eighth inning won the game for York, which had 10 hits.

Deardurff had two hits and an RBI. Lee and Bernal also had two hits and an RBI. Chiappetta had a hit and two RBI. Pastuovic had a hit and an RBI. Ross and Gelsomino each had a hit.

College program recalls Elie Wiesel, Holocaust survivor

In 2012 when author and humanitarian Elie Wiesel received the Chicago Tribune Literary Prize, Tribune critic Howard Reich interviewed him about his life and work. The two struck up a friendship that lasted until Wiesel’s death in July of 2016, brought together by Wiesel’s work, and by the Holocaust.

Reich will discuss his relationship with Wiesel and Wiesel’s literary classic, Night—the haunting memoir of his experience in the Nazi concentration camps during the annual Holocaust Service of Remembrance and Lecture at Elmhurst College.

The program will take place on Sunday, April 23 at 7

p.m. in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Wiesel was a survivor of the death camps; and Reich has shared with the world the story of his mother, a Holocaust survivor who had hidden from the Nazis as a young girl and later would struggle with the aftermath.

The Holocaust Service of Remembrance and Lecture is a highlight of the Holocaust Education Project, which for more than 25 years has considered the events and lessons of the Holocaust, as well as their ties to the modern world.

The Elmhurst History Museum welcomes Steven W. Kuehl to consider those questions on Thursday, April 20 at 2 p.m. Kuehl is the economic development and Wisconsin state director for the community development and policy studies division of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. He will share his insights on economic development, the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), fair lending laws, and consumer banking regulations.

The program takes place in the Elmhurst History Museum’s Education Center, located at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst. The program is free to members of the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, and $5 for non-members. Reservations may be made online at elmhursthistory. org (in the Adult Program section) or by calling 630-530-6879. Limited on-site parking is available.

The lecture is presented in conjunction with the Elmhurst History Museum’s new exhibit, “House & Home,” a traveling exhibit from the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. and NEH on the Road. The exhibit explores the various meanings of home to Americans through an expansive array of household objects, engaging interactive displays, detailed house models, video content and more.

Admission to the exhibit is free.

While a transport ambulance would still be provided by a mutual aid town there would be no undue delay in the initiation of ALS care. At the point of the arrival of a mutual aid ambulance, the Rapid Response ALS unit would transfer patient care to the mutual aid ambulance and then be available in the City of Elmhurst for any subsequent response.

This vehicle could be situated at either station and provisions will be made with DuComm to move it strategically at any time based on demands for service by existing paramedic units. This type of response vehicle would have the unique ability to negotiate through heavy rush hour traffic and other logistical configurations more expeditiously than a larger piece of fire apparatus.

This vehicle would be a city vehicle only and would not be sent on mutual aid calls. The annual cost of one unit with one medic would be $165,352.

Twin sisters turn 94

Lexington Square residents have been close since childhood

As twin sisters, 96-year-old Tracie Banser and Yolanda (Lonnie) Buseman have been nearly inseparable for much of their lives.

“We’ve only been separated when she got married,” says Lonnie. “We didn’t dress alike any more, but we would call each other up every day.”

“We were very, very close,” recalls Tracie. “We never were alone. I went someplace, she went with me. We’d go together all the time. We just didn’t feel right going any place by ourselves.”

Tracie and Lonnie were born on Oct. 1, 1920 in Matoka, West Virginia, a small town in the southern part of the state.

When they were in their teens, they moved to the Chicago area where, as identical twins, they enjoyed trading places to see if their unsuspecting victims would notice.

Lonnie recalls the time she and Tracie were on a double date with their boyfriends at the Aragon Ballroom.

“We danced all evening, changed partners and had a great time,” says Lonnie. “They did not know who they were dancing with, at least ‘til we got home and kissed us good night (when we told them). They got very angry and said they weren’t going to ask us out again if we ever did that again.”

Tracie ended up marrying her real boyfriend from that double date, Anthony (Tony) Falduto, in 1942. They were married for 25 years until Tony passed away. Tracie later re-married – her husband of 12 years, Henry Bans-

er, died in 1981.

Tracie, who has three daughters and three granddaughters, is also proud to note that while working in the personnel office at Motorola, she sold war bonds to employees to support the country during World War II. Lonnie and Onno Buseman married in 1947 and were together for 55 years until 2002, when Onno passed away.

Lonnie, who has three daughters, two sons, and six grandchildren, was a part of history at Motorola, where she was part of the team that built the first Motorola TV that came off the production line in 1949.

Tracie and Lonnie have done just about everything together, including staying healthy. They acknowledge good genes have a lot to do with their good health and longevity, but they also credit: a very positive family life during childhood, maintaining that happiness as adults, healthy diet, staying active and having friends.

Tracie and Lonnie say they were very happy all of their young lives.

They both say their mom and dad were wonderful and that even though they were a family of nine, they did not want for anything.

The twins live in separate units at the Lexington Square Senior Living Community in Elmhurst .

Students from several DuPage County high schools displayed their green building projects to the public at the 11th annual Sustainable Design Challenge on Tuesday, held at DuPage County’s Administration Building in Wheaton.

Sponsored by DuPage County Stormwater Management, SCARCE coordinates the event each year to encourage local schools to explore sustainable building and landscaping topics with students. Participating high schools included Wheaton Warrenville South, York Community (Elmhurst), Glenbard East (Lombard), Lake Park (Roselle) and Hinsdale South (Darien).

“We look forward to the Sustainable Design Challenge every year at the County,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “It’s a breath of fresh air to see the building filled with students who have turned their ideas into innovative and advanced building designs. I continue to be impressed year after year.”

Nearly 30 student groups presented models of their designs to a panel of judges, as well as the public, County Board members, local professionals and County and municipal staff. Students explained the design elements that made their building sustainable, including renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines, water conservation elements using native plant landscaping and rain barrels and green infrastructure for stormwater management. The DuPage County Board will award the top designs at the May 9 meeting.

“We introduced the element of competition by judging projects last year, and, from what I’ve seen, it has really prompted students to elevate the quality of their designs,” said Stormwater Management Planning Committee Chairman Jim Zay. “They’re bringing professionalism and ingenuity to their projects and I look forward to recognizing the top designs along with the rest of the County Board.”

Kay McKeen, founder and executive director of SCARCE, credits much of the popularity of this event to schools advancing science, technology, mathematics and engineering (STEM) education.

“It has been a long time coming, but STEM curriculum has finally become a staple in schools,” said McKeen. “Students can actually take the principles learned in the classroom and apply them to real world scenarios.”

During the event, students also toured sustainable practices throughout DuPage County’s campus, including a green roof, rain garden and restored wetland, as well as several sustainable building features at the DuPage Health Department’s Community Center.
