ECPA feasibility study paints bright outlook for City Key implications indicate strong demand for performing arts facility
By Dee Longfellow FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT
Striving, surviving and thriving are three levels of success. According to a recent feasibility study commissioned by the Board of the Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts (ECPA), the City of Elmhurst would rocket right to stage 3 with a performing arts center. Board President Jeff Budgell shared the good news at a recent meeting that included the newest Board member, former Mayor Thomas D. Marcucci. The meeting began with an overview of the project thus far: The ECPA will be: • located in downtown Elmhurst to draw people to the main shopping and entertainment center of the City; • featuring a main stage, a black box stage, an education center (classrooms, practice areas) and administration. • about 34,000 square feet and will fit inside a typical City-sized lot with space for 300-350 seats in the main stage auditorium. • a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization offering a venue for live theatre, dance, music and other entertainment. • a long-term investment for the community. Work on the ECPA so far has been spearheaded by Board members Rebecca Marianetti, Laura Michaud and Doug Peterson, in addition to
Budgell. They also rely on 75-80 volunteers, he said. The feasibility study, which took about a year, was done by Johnson Consulting for the ECPA. Johnson Consulting has completed studies for other entertainment venues including
the Sydney Opera House.
Details of the study The hypothetical question of the study was: “Is there space in the market for another theatre?” The answer was a resounding “YES!” according
“In fact, if the facility does well, to the results. The Johnson study put it this way: it should at least break even as early “Elmhurst … can support a 50,000 as the first year,” Budgell told Board sq. ft. building with two distinct members. The study indicates that the demotheaters and ancillary support areas with an estimated cost of $25 million See ECPA, Page 3 (2018 estimate).”
Snoopy the Flying Ace comes to town!
It was a chilly but a lively day on Saturday, April 7, when kids were invited to meet Snoopy at the fountain plaza of Elmhurst City Centre, after a free screening of the Peanuts movie at York Theatre. These girls were having a great time greeting the famous cartoon character, complete with his Flying Ace outfit he wore to fight the Red Baron. The event was held in conjunction with the current exhibition at the Elmhurst History Museum, “Snoopy and the Red Baron.” More photos inside. DEE LONGFELLOW PHOTO Elmhurst Independent
