Durbin staffer offers political action discussion to ABT-Elmhurst Empowered citizens from the advocacy group Action for a Better Tomorrow hosted Greg Bales at their monthly meeting in Elmhurst on Feb, 27.

Community Outreach Coordinator for Senator Dick Durbin, Bales spoke about working with local politicians, provided tips on how to get involved in politics and offered insight on how to communicate effectively with local representatives.

Questions from the group focused on the roles available to community members who are new to direct political involvement, what issues Senator Durbin’s office is currently focusing on, and which local political and civic organizations need support.

The session lasted for over an hour as ABT members discussed how to increase their involvement in the political process and in their local community.

At 1:49 a.m., police responded to a 911 call from a resident who observed a suspicious male subject pulling on car door handles in the vicinity of Berkley and Elm Park Avenues. Upon arrival, an officer located a vehicle on the 100 block of S. Berkley that appeared to have been entered and its contents disturbed. Upon speaking to the owner of the vehicle, it was verified a burglary to the vehicle had apparently occurred.

Officers conducted a search of the area with the assistance of a police canine unit. During the search the offender was spotted and fled from officers on foot. After approximately an hour, the offender was located walking along the Canadian Domestic & Foreign National Railroad tracks near West Automotive Repairs Avenue, where he was taken into custody.

Elmhurst Children’s Theatre is proud to perform Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical CATS! Based on the universally popular poetry of T.S. Eliot, CATS tells the story, in song and dance, of the annual gathering of the Jellicle cats at which time one special cat is selected to ascend to the Heaviside layer. This show provides magic, mystery and memories for the whole family to enjoy.

Sandburg Middle School sixth-grader, Oliver Roy, is new to ECT. Not only does he enjoy his role in CATS, but he also “really enjoys the new friendships and fun things in and out of rehearsals,” Roy said.

CeCe Lampa, Bryan Middle School eighth-grader, has been involved with ECT since fifth grade.

City Council approves conditional use for daycare facility 9-4

After an agonizing nail-biter for the petitioner and her supporters, the Elmhurst City Council after much debate finally approved the conditional use permit for the proposed Elmhurst Premier Childcare facility at 187-195 No. York, just south of City Hall.

At the previous week’s Zoning & Planning Committee meeting, committee member Mark Mulliner (7th Ward) and Chair Scott Levin (5th Ward) couldn’t mask their annoyance after having the measure pulled from the previous City Council meeting agenda by staff people, when the Committee felt it was ready for the vote of the full Council.

After numerous people spoke on behalf of Kasindra Mladenoff and her business model during public forum, Levin attempted to explain the course of events that had transpired over the past week.

Levin and Mulliner signed the Majority Committee Report recommending approval, while the third Committee member Alderman Michael Honquest (6th Ward) had submitted a Minority Report, agreeing with City staff who were discouraging the project.

Some felt safety was the utmost

concern, and while no one denies that safety is important, others on the dais pointed out the case for common sense.

“I trust the common sense of the parents in the community,” said Mulliner. “Children are the most important thing in a parent’s life — I had two myself! — and they’re going to take every possible precaution to protect their children, that’s just what parents do.”

Mulliner had previously pointed out that the building had been standing empty for the past eight years.

“I want to be safe, but I don’t want to roll up the streets and turn this into a prairie again either,” he said.

The first vote was in opposition to exchanging the Minority Report for the Majority Report. When the Majority Report was called, the vote was 9-4 with one absent (7th Ward Ald. Pat Wagner). The yea votes were from Aldermen Levin, Marti Deuter (1st), Bob Dunn (2nd), Mulliner, Noel Talluto (4th), Dannee Polomsky (3rd), Michael Bram (3rd), Jim Kennedy (6th) and Chris Healy (5th). Nay votes came from Aldermen Honquest, Norm Leader (2nd), Mark Sabatino (1st) and Kevin York (4th).

Elmhurst College’s Dr. Troy VanAken hosts his first President’s Breakfast

“What I really noticed was that these people [the VanAkens] are all about the student,” Morley said. “If he’s not in his office, he’s likely out mingling with the students on campus. He has infectious enthusiasm and is a prodigious fundraiser as well.”

It was noted that after receiving $2.8 million in gifts and pledges for FY16, there is already $6.1 million so far in 2017 Year-To-Date.

The buzzwords for the day were connections and community at Elmhurst College on Saturday morning, March 4 when Dr. Troy D. VanAken held his first President’s Breakfast in the lower level of the Frick Center. Joining him was his wife, Dr. Annette VanAken . Former House Speaker and Adjutant Professor Lee Daniels served as emcee.

“Never before has the relationship between the City and Elmhurst College been so strong,” Daniels told the group of about 125 people from all walks of life in the community who were invited. “We are so proud of the spirit of community and all it represents.”

The Elmhurst Jazz Combo performed briefly at the beginning of the program to the delight of all the guests. Desiree Chen, Senior Director of Communications and External Relations for Elmhurst College, showed a newly-created video that offered the latest information about the college, its classes, students, faculty, programs and activities, and its current financial status. The college currently has about 3300 students and offers 61 majors, 17 graduate programs and 100 organizations, teams and clubs.

Dr. VanAken began his comments noting that although he’s only been in his position officially since July 1, it was about a year ago at this time that he and Annette flew here to look over the campus — in the cold and snow. But the weather did not keep them away.

“It feels like home,” he said. “Annette and I are both here because we feel it is our calling in life to get involved with young people at this very important time in their lives. We want students to live their best-pos-

sible life in the future. And the best possible life always begins with a good education.”

After calling attention to ELSA, the college’s Elmhurst Learning and Success Academy, which serves 42 people, another short video was shown, this time from the parents of a young lady receiving her acceptance letter to attend ELSA classes.

It was a heart-warming scene, watching her jump up and down, hug her family and wipe away tears. There were a few tears in the room, as guests watched the video which had originally been posted on youTube by the girl’s parents. Dr. VanAken was made aware of it and decided to show it at the breakfast.

The President went on to other community endeavors such as the upcoming recycling event, the lecture series and other cultural events, the Center for Professional Excellence, which currently has an endowment fund of $2.25 million, and many others. He also looks forward to the college playing an active role in hosting next summer’s Cycling Classic.

In pointing out some exceptional accomplishments by students and faculty at Elmhurst, he said one professor had been named a Fulbright Scholar and will be spending four months in India. He talked about Glenn British, an All-American middle linebacker who was attending the NFL-NFCA Coaches Acade-

VanAken said the entire college was looking forward to celebrating the school’s 150th anniversary, its Sesqui-centennial. They are currently planning for it during 201718, then will implement the plan in 2018-2020 and the Sesquicentennial year is 2021.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Disorderly conduct, trespass notice

Feb. 22 A victim in the 400 block of W. Vallette told police at around 5:20 p.m. that a suspect was threatening him due to an ongoing dispute from a previous day. The suspect was contacted and denied making any threats. Both were advised to have no further contact with each other.

Domestic incident, domestic battery

Feb. 28 A victim in the 100 block of E. Grand told police at around 2:38 p.m. that she woke her husband because of his snoring, and he turned and struck her in the chest. The victim stated that three weeks ago, her husband pushed her from behind, causing her to fall. The suspect related the victim was acting strangely due to her medication and he grabbed her jacket in an attempt to stop her from leaving the house and she faked a fall to the ground. Due to conflicting stories, no arrests were made.

Feb. 26 Police said a victim and suspect ensued in an argument in the 500 block of Comstock at around 2:14 p.m. The victim attempted to call 911 when the suspect grabbed her cell phone and destroyed it, according to police. Their daughter then attempted to call 911 and they struggled. The suspect left the scene. An investigation is pending.

Feb. 25 Police said that subsequent to a call for domestic battery in the 500 block of W. Grand Ave. at around 11:57 a.m., the suspect—a 29-year-old man from Chicago—believed that the victim had taken an unspecified amount of cash from him. The suspect then kicked the victim in the leg, according to police.

Feb. 23 A victim in the 500 block of N. Willow told police at around 6:45 p.m. that his son has been talking to himself for the past month. On the above date, he was drinking all day and reportedly became violent, head-butting the victim. The victim called 911 and the suspect allegedly took the phone and threw it out the back door. The suspect, a 36-year-old Elmhurst man, was charged with domestic battery and unlawful interference with the reporting of a domestic violence incident.

Feb. 26 • Francisco Alvarez, 37, of Berwyn, was charged with DUI subsequent to the report of a suspicious auto in the 300 block of W. Grand Ave. at around 2:39 a.m.

• Kent Bullock, 38, of Chicago, was charged with illegal transportation of open alcohol, DUI, improper lane usage, disobeying a traffic control device and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 at North at around 3:17 a.m.

• David Hosick, 57, of River Grove, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage near North and Highview at around 11:38 p.m.

Feb. 25 • Robert Herzog, 39, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI and disorderly conduct in the 100 block of S. York at around 2:45 a.m.

Police said that while reporting officers were on patrol, the officers located the driver, Herzog, who was asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle.

• Patrick Jablonski, 21, of Wood Dale, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and I-290 at around 12:48 a.m.

• Edward Kopsel, 70, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI subsequent to a suspicious vehicle in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at around 1:13 a.m.

• Police said officers responded to a rollover accident near Roosevelt and Euclid at around 8:07 p.m. with the driver pinned inside. Upon arrival, an officer smelled the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle. The driver was extricated from the vehicle. Charges are pending for aggravated DUI, improper lane usage, driving while license suspended, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no insurance.

Harassment, threats

Feb. 21-Feb. 23 A victim told police at around 10:18 a.m. that a suspect called the main number of a bank in order to contact the victim. The suspect has been calling the bank consistently and has been told in the past not to contact the victim. An investigation is pending.

Possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia, controlled substance

March 1 • Lorenzo Bassette, 32, of Addison, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis at a hotel in the 400 block of W. Lake St. at around 10:22 a.m. Police said officers observed Bassette seated in a parked car in the hotel parking lot. According to police, upon making contact with Bassette, officers detected an odor of

burnt cannabis, and Bassette admitted to possessing cannabis and surrendered an amount of cannabis to the officer.

• Rylan D. Raspatello, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia in the 300 block of W. Butterfield at 8:58 p.m. Police said that subsequent to making contact with a suspicious vehicle which was observed behind a closed business, passenger Raspatello was found to be in possession of a metal grinder containing cannabis residue.

Feb. 27 • Christian Carlsen, 21, and Allison Hlavacek, 19, both of Elmhurst, were issued citations near York and Grantley at around 12:18 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Carlsen and Hlavacek were found to have been smoking cannabis inside the vehicle. The driver, Hlavacek, admitted to smoking cannabis prior to being stopped, according to police. Carlsen was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia, while Hlavacek was cited for speeding.

• Vladimir Furman, 53, of Vernon Hills, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia near Grand and Oaklawn at around 3:17 p.m. Police said while on patrol, officers observed Furman smoking a cannabis “one hitter” pipe, and the smell of burnt cannabis was also coming from the vehicle. A traffic stop was initiated, and Furman was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

• Officers responded to the report of a suspicious vehicle in the 500 block of Lemont Road at around 6:15 a.m. Officers observed two people sleeping in the vehicle. Items of drug paraphernalia were observed and the vehicle smelled like burnt cannabis, according to police. The suspect was a missing/endangered juvenile out of Arlington Heights. The juvenile was cited for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and a curfew violation. The juvenile was released to a guardian on the scene after receiving an evaluation from medics. The juvenile was removed from LEADS. Feb. 26 Alexander J. Love, 21, of Villa Park, was charged with possession of cannabis and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Berteau and North at around 11:41 a.m. Police said a reporting officer smelled a strong odor of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle.

According to police, Love admitted to having smoked cannabis earlier in the day and provided the reporting officer with a small amount of cannabis.

Feb. 24 Jaquan Lewis, 22, of Bellwood, and Kymiya Boyce, 21, of Chicago, were issued citations by police near Roosevelt and York at around 11:17 p.m. Boyce was cited for possession of cannabis while Lewis was cited for possession of cannabis, no insurance and no seat belt.

Feb. 23 • Michael D. Gosa, 22, of Bellwood, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Palmer and Marion at around 5:16 p.m.

Gustavo Hernandez, 22, of Cicero, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and disobeying a traffic control light subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 1:07 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances

Feb. 24 A victim in the 900 block of Hillcrest told police at around 10:35 p.m. that he was reportedly being followed by a silver Chevrolet sedan. The victim drove to the intersection of York and Vallette where a silver Buick sedan and the Chevrolet sedan blocked his car in the

traffic lane. The victim stated that a female approached his vehicle and accused him of putting nails under her tires. The victim then began to drive away from the area, but noticed the Chevrolet was still following him until he reached I-290. The report was done as a matter of record.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Feb. 28 • Demetrius Orr, 18, of Villa Park, was charged with burglary to a vehicle in the 100 block of Berkley at around 1:59 a.m. Police said officers responded to a complaint of a suspicious person tampering with vehicles, and located a vehicle which had been burglarized, according to police. A suspect was observed riding a bicycle from the area and then fleeing on foot, police said. Officers set up a perimeter and conducted a K-9 search of the area. Orr was located on the CNRR tracks near West Avenue and was taken into custody and transported to the police station, according to police.

• Josiah J. Schubring, 34, of Elgin, was charged with retail theft and unlawful possession of a controlled substance in the 600 block of N. York at around 6:03 p.m. Police said officers were dispatched to a coffee shop for a retail theft in-progress. According to police, officers made contact with Schubring who admitted to stealing coffee and a mug. Schubring was transported to the Police Department and during a search, police said a clear plastic bag of suspect heroin fell out of Schubring’s sock.

Feb. 27-Feb. 28 • A victim in the 600 block of Mitchell told police at around 7:47 a.m. that an unknown suspect entered two unlocked vehicles which were parked in his driveway overnight sometime between the above dates.

• Two incidents of burglary to a vehicle occurred in the 300 block of Eggleston Ave. In the first incident, reported at around 1:33 p.m., a victim told police that during the above time frame, an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked vehicle and moved paperwork from the center console to the driver’s seat of the vehicle. Nothing appeared to be taken. In the second incident, reported at 1:45 p.m., a victim told police that during the above time frame, an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked vehicles and emptied the contents of the center console and glove box onto the front seat.

The victim is not sure if any change had been taken.

Feb. 26 A victim in the 300 block of W. Lake St. told police at around 5:01 p.m. that while at an entertainment center, his wallet fell out of his pocket onto one of the bleachers. Upon reviewing surveillance video, a reporting officer observed a suspect reportedly pick up the wallet and place it in her bag. The suspect was identified and related she would bring the wallet to the police department. Police said further investigation revealed two online purchase attempts had been made with one of the victim’s credit cards, which had been inside the stolen wallet. An investigation is pending.

Feb. 24 • Jessica Brooks, 19, of Arlington Heights, was charged with possession of a false ID in the 100 block of S. Prospect Ave. at around 8:19 p.m. A reporting officer responded to the Elmhurst College campus security office for a wallet that was found near the chapel.

According to police, the wallet contained a Maryland driver’s license with a false name and date of birth. Police said Brooks was contacted, came into the police department for her items and admitted to having a false ID. Feb. 23 • Police said that subsequent to a fraud in progress at a financial institution in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 9:26 a.m., a suspect had attempted to make a substantial withdrawal from a debit account using a fraudulent driver’s license. The transaction was not completed, and the suspect was placed under arrest and transported to the station. He was processed and released without charges. Further investigation is pending.

• A complainant—the owner of a restaurant in the 100 block of S.York—told police at around 3:40 p.m. that a suspect has been stealing checks and cashing them. An investigation is pending.

• A victim in the 300 block of N. Addison told police at around 3 p.m. that she had left her Illinois driver’s license in a friend’s vehicle about a month ago. On the above date, she received a letter from a hotel in Hoffman Estates stating she had checked into a room on Feb. 18, and upon checkout on Feb. 19, there was significant damage to the room and she would be held liable. The victim relates she did not stay at the hotel and believes her friend may have used her license upon check in. An inves-

tigation is pending.

• A victim in the 100 block of N. Walnut told police at around 6:40 p.m. than an unknown suspect(s) used his information to open a Target Red Card in Streamwood. The unknown suspect(s) purchased two cell phones for a total cash value of approximately $150.

Jan. 15-Feb. 23 A mother and daughter came to the police station to speak with an officer about the daughter committing retail thefts and driving without a license on numerous occasions over the last month. The mother told police that her daughter drives her friend’s car to a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 during her school’s lunch break and steals various items, mostly food, according to police. She was arrested for retail theft in November of 2016, but continues to steal, police said. The suspect was not criminally charged on Feb. 23 date because the store did not want to pursue complaints.

Feb. 19 A victim in the 400 block of Argyle told police at around 7:56 p.m. that she received several credit cards in the mail from various stores that she did not apply for. She checked her credit report and discovered several more had been opened in her name.

The victim contacted the stores and placed a freeze on her credit. No purchases had been made on the credit cards so there is no dollar loss.

Feb. 27 Subsequent to a suspicious auto in the 500 block of N. Kenilworth Ave. at around 11:41 p.m., the reporting officer smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage and burnt cannabis coming from inside the vehicle. The passengers, both juveniles, admitted to smoking cannabis and consuming alcoholic beverages. Juvenile 2 was also found to possess a valid juvenile warrant for domestic battery. Juvenile 1 was charged with possession of cannabis and underage consumption of alcohol and was released on scene to her father. Juvenile 2 was transported to Kane County Youth Home on an original warrant. The driver was released on scene without charges.

Feb. 24 Police said that during a call for a disabled vehicle near Route 83 and Roosevelt at around 7:24 a.m., Shanise Milner, 22, of Willowbrook, was found to be wanted on a warrant out of DuPage County.

Letter to the editor Don’t play politics with people’s health, reader urges Before the Affordable Care Act (ACA), accessing health coverage could be like playing Russian roulette for cancer patients. Insurance companies could cancel a patient’s existing coverage when they get sick, or deny coverage in the first place because of a pre-existing condition.

If you reached a lifetime or annual limit, your care could be cut off.

Yes, the ACA needs improvements. But changing the law in such a way that eliminates critical patient protections and reduces access to affordable and adequate coverage would be devastating to the millions of cancer patients who rely on it. We simply can’t afford to go back.

One proposal being considered is

to keep the ban on pre-existing condition discrimination only if a person maintains continuous coverage. But if a cancer patient can’t work or loses their job and experiences a gap in coverage, that could potentially lock them out of the insurance market indefinitely. Just like what happened before the ACA. Cancer patients can’t face the possibility of not being able to purchase coverage.

Let’s not play politics with people’s health. I’m asking Congress to compromise on improvements to the existing law. Don’t eliminate what’s working and send us back to uncertainty without assurances that access to coverage will be as good or better than what we have now.

Park Board Capsules

The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on Feb. 27 at the district’s administrative office at 375 W. First Street. Commissioner Doug Ennis and Commissioner Anthony Pelosi were both absent from the meeting.

There were no public comments.

Imprinted apparel items approved Board members voted unanimously to approve the consent agenda for the meeting, which included the awarding of the district’s 2017 imprinted wearables bid for about $25,300 with Sunburst Sportswear of Glendale Heights. The bid is for about 4,900 items covering the district’s imprinted wearable needs for program participants, as well as full-time and part-time staff members. Four organizations submitted bids for the project. Sunburst Sportswear submitted the lowest responsible bid, which amounted to $5.15 per item. Board approval was required because the bid exceeded $25,000.

Spring tree planting project to begin The meeting’s consent agenda also included the awarding of the district’s 2017 spring tree planting project to Alaniz Lawncare, Inc. of Elgin. The project includes the base bid of about $25,600, plus an alternate of about $4,200. There were nine bidders for the project. Alaniz Lawncare submitted the lowest responsible bid. The project includes the planting of a total of 75 trees throughout the district, including 38 tree memorial replacements. Twelve of the 38 tree memorial replacements are trees that were removed during the City of Elmhurst’s storm water maintenance project at York Commons. The park district will receive funds from the city that will be used this year and in future years for tree replacement. The alternate bid of about $4,200 consists of the planting of seven larger trees near the playgrounds at Butterfield Park and East End Park.

Paver replacement planned at Depot, Wild Meadows Trace The board also voted unanimously during the meeting to award a separate project to Alaniz Lawncare of Elgin. The district accepted the company’s base bid of about $22,300 for the paver replacement project at the Depot, located in Wild Meadows Trace. Alaniz Lawncare, one of four bidders, submitted the lowest bid.

Tennis courts at Berens to be resurfaced The board voted unanimously to award the resurfacing project of the north tennis courts at Berens Park to Allstar Asphalt Inc., of Wheeling. The project includes a base bid of about $122,000, plus an alternate of about $3,200 to replace tennis posts and nets. The six north tennis courts at Berens Park have not had a major overhaul since their construction in 2004. The courts are used by the York High School boys and girls tennis programs, as well as park district programs and open recreational players. The courts are in need of renovation because of cracking and surface issues. Four companies submitted bids for the project, with Allstar Asphalt submitting the lowest responsible bid. The same company completed a resurfacing project of the tennis courts and roller hockey court at Eldridge Park in 2016.

The resurfacing project of the six north courts at Berens Park will begin shortly after the York boys tennis team’s season ends in late may.

The project will be completed when the York girls tennis program’s season begins in August. According to information provided by the park district, the newly resurfaced courts should last for approximately 20 years.

The six south courts at the park will be available for use during the summer.

New marketing and communications director At the end of the meeting, Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers introduced Kari Felkamp, the district’s new director of marketing and communications director, to the board. Felkamp spent the last 11 years as the Batavia Park District’s director of marketing and public relations. She succeeds Ginger Wade, who announced her retirement in December. Wade, who spent about five years as the Elmhurst Park District’s director of marketing and communications, retired on March 1.

The park district board will hold its next regular meeting on March 13.

Following win at regionals, York Math Team headed to State The York High School Math Team recently won its regional contest by placing first among nine teams at the meet, allowing them to advance to the state meet, which will be held May 6 at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.

Of the ten competitive events, both individual and team, York placed first in six of them. York placed 13th as a school in statewide rankings. The breakdown is as follows: • Freshmen: First place Algebra 1 team competition with leading scorers; Joseph Gemini, Caroline Collins, Emily Dow and Dylan Mahoney. Gemini also took first individually and Caroline took fifth individually in this region.

• Sophomores: First place in Geometry team competition with leading scorers; Tristan Contant, Will Philips, Jacob Wit, David Hansen and Jack Rosenberg. Tristan and Will tied for second place individually.

ICCP students selected for All-Catholic Honor Band IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) has announced that band students, Maggie Wisniewski (’20) and Casey Kristie (’18), were selected to participate in the annual All-Catholic Honor Band performance on January 21, 2017.

Freshman Maggie Wisniewski was able to attend, playing the trumpet alongside seventy-five other musicians. Unfortunately, Casey Kristie was unable to participate on this day.

“It was a phenomenal experience,” said Wisniewski. “The music was pretty complex and challenging and it was great to be led by a new conductor to get a different perspective. I am so grateful to have been selected to participate.”

As a member of the ICGS Class of 1956, Daudelin was honored for his service to our country, his professional leadership in the floral industry, his commitment to the Catholic faith, along with his steadfast loyalty to IC Parish and its schools. ICCP competes in Academic Regional Challenge On Thursday, Feb. 9, IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) returned to compete in the Academic Challenge created and sponsored by the World Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) program. In the competition, held at Fenwick High School, the 14-member ICCP team finished third in the 700 Division, just short of qualifying as a team for the Sectional competition in March as only the top two teams advance. Due to increased enrollment at the school, the team moved up from the 300 division where they competed in 2016.

In addition to the 14-member team, ICCP had five “At Large” entries. These students competed as individuals, however, their scores were not included in the overall team score.

They are eligible to advance to the next round

of competition if their individual scores rank high enough.

ICCP also sent five junior varsity participants. With the sole purpose of exposing these sophomore students to the WYSE competition, they are not eligible to advance regardless of their individual score.

Each team creates sets of tests that increase in level of difficulty in a progression from regional, to sectional, to state final competitions.

Individual scoring winners for ICCP included Josh De La Cruz (‘18) who earned a first place in Biology, Demitra Del Fiacco (‘17) who earned a third place in Engineering Graphics, Alec Vasquez (‘18) who earned a third place in Biology, and Mark Zhao (‘18) who earned a second place in Chemistry and a third place

On Wednesday, Feb. 1, IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) held its biennial Wall of Honor Award presentation – a key event in the celebration of Catholic Schools Week. Immaculate Conception Pastor, Very Rev. Thomas Paul, led a special Mass, followed by an award presentation for this year’s ICCP Wall of Honor Award recipient, Mary Ann Bauernfeind.

After Mass, Tim Koch ’76 delivered words of reflection on Bauernfeind’s behalf. She received an engraved crystal cross, and a reception was held in her honor.

“It is evident that Mrs. Bauernfeind’s life’s work and commitment to IC Catholic Prep reflect the heart and spirit of Catholic education,” said ICCP Principal Pamela Levar. “Her devotion to the IC Catholic Prep and Visitation communities is truly inspiring.”

Born in Chicago in 1940, Bauernfeind grew up in the Catholic School system. She attended Blessed Sacrament on the city’s west side until her family moved to Bellwood where she was enrolled at St. Simeon for sixth through eighth grade. The eldest of three sisters, Bauernfeind really wanted to attend IC for high school, but due to the high enrollment numbers, acceptance was restricted to freshman who had siblings at the school already. She attended Trinity High School in River Forest instead and went on to graduate from De Paul Univer-

sity in Chicago with a degree in Elementary Education.

She began her teaching career in the Addison public school system where she remained for 12 years. While teaching in Addison, she met the love of her life, Jim Bauernfeind (Class of 1956). Jim himself was honored as an IC Distinguished Alumni in 2011.

While at home raising their daughters Suzie (’92) and Mary Beth (’93), Mrs. Bauernfeind earned her real estate license and worked at L.W. Reedy here in Elmhurst. She returned to teaching full time at Visitation Grade School in Elmhurst for 15 years until she retired in 2007.

“The choice of a Catholic education is not without tremendous sacrifice,” explained Bauernfeind. “I want these students to go home and hug their parents and thank them for everything they have had to give up to pay forward this wonderful gift.”

Mary Ann Bauernfeind will also be an honored guest at the Annual ICCP Knight of Jewels Gala on Saturday, March 18, 2017. IC Catholic Prep is the oldest Catholic, co-educational college prep high school in DuPage County. City to share proposed downtown zoning changes with public

The City of Elmhurst will host two Open House events on Thursday, March 9 and on Monday, March 13 from 5-7 p.m. both evenings. They will take place at City Hall, where the public can receive information regarding proposed downtown zoning changes.

In June of 2016, the City of Elmhurst adopted a new Downtown Plan, designed to present a vision for the year 2025, providing goals, objectives, and other recommendations of action to be undertaken by the City to maintain downtown as an attractive and vibrant city center. To realize the vision set forth in the plan, the plan identifies and recommends changes to the city’s zoning ordinance and development procedures and processes.

“The proposed zoning changes are consistent with the recently adopted Downtown Plan,” said Eileen Franz, the City’s Assistant Planning & Zoning Administrator. “The public is invited to the Open House meetings where we will explain the changes and what the rezoning means for the downtown.”

Following the meetings, a Public Hearing will be held for the proposed zoning changes recommended in the 2016 Downtown Plan Thursday, March 23 at 7 p.m., also at City Hall.

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team loses in sectionals

Knights enjoy another outstanding season; Sutton headed to state 3-point shooting finals

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team ran into a tough Chicago Orr team and dropped a 66-44 decision in the semifinals of the recent Class 2A Guerin Prep sectional in River Grove.

Orr went on to defeat Chicago DePaul Prep for the sectional title and played in the Class 2A Joliet Central supersectional earlier this week for a chance to compete in the Class 2A state semifinals this weekend in Peoria.

“Orr is extremely athletic and had several guys who could jump out of the gym,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “They are a very physical and aggressive team with their pressure and traps. They have the firepower inside and out.

My guess is they will be the Class 2A state champions before this is all finished. We started out a little slow against them and had several opportunities to keep it close. We didn’t hit some shots early on and had some unforced turnovers that led to momentum going in Orr’s favor. The closest we got was 14 in the second half.”

Tyrrell noted Luke Ricobene, Matt Sutton and Amari Reed all had strong games against Orr. “Luke, Matt and Amari really battled against Orr,” he said. “Things are very encouraging for us next year. We graduate only three seniors and four of our starters are juniors this year.”

Tyrrell thanked Sutton, Tony Gaudio and Galvin Gecsey for their contributions as senior leaders.

“We owe them a big thank-you,” he said.

The Knights finished the season 21-8 overall. IC Catholic Prep won the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division title for the first time in that setup and won their third league title in five years. IC Catholic Prep also won its second Class 2A regional title in the last four years.

IC Catholic Prep’s sophomore team finished 17-7 overall, while the freshman squad was 18-9.

“The future is bright,” said Tyrrell. “The program is healthy and I’m very encouraged moving forward.”

Alex Meurer, Kevin Cheng and Reed earned all-MSC Blue honors— all three are juniors.

“Alex really stepped up for us down the stretch,” the coach pointed

out. “He came into his own. In those close games he was in there getting rebounds and doing all the little things we needed to win.”

IC Catholic Prep also won the Coal City tournament this season.

“We had a very good year,” said Tyrrell.

Against Orr, Ricobene had 13 points, while Reed added 12 points.

Sutton finished with 10 points.

“This is absolutely the toughest Class 2A sectional in the state,” said Tyrrell. “Chicago Uplift lost to Orr and those teams were first or second in the Class 2A state rankings. It’s how it works out. I had a feeling with us hosting regionals that we would head toward the city this year. It was a great experience for us. Overall,

this year was great and I’m thankful for the opportunity to coach these boys and be part of this program.”

Sutton’s season will continue later this week in Peoria. He was one of four competitors at Guerin who advanced to the state finals of the Class 2A three-point shooting contest.

Sutton will shoot at Carver Arena in Peoria.

Timothy Christian boys basketball team enjoys strong season Trojans win 17 games; Orange, Davidson earn all-conference accolades

While the end result wasn’t what it wanted, the Timothy Christian boys basketball team can hang its hat on another strong season.

The Trojans went 17-11 overall and finished second in the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division with an 8-4 record.

Timothy lost 53-52 to IC Catholic Prep in a Class 2A regional championship game at IC Catholic Prep.

“It was a tough loss to IC,” said LeGrand. “It was a good basketball game with a lot of lead changes back and forth. They made one more basket than we did. The kids did a good job and I’m very proud of them. It was a great high-school atmosphere.

We played a tough game. It was a hard loss, but I’m very proud of our guys’ championship effort the entire game.”

Brandon Orange led the Trojans with 17 points in the game.

“We had a shot go off the rim at the buzzer after they had hit a basket

on a scramble play,” said LeGrand.

“We had a shot at the end with nine seconds. I was really proud of what I saw. The guys really improved this season.”

LeGrand will take many positives into the postseason. “Our guys had a really good year,” he said. “Our younger guys gained some valuable experience and the leadership of our seniors will be missed. It’s going to be weird without a Davidson on the team (brothers Luke and Joey have played for LeGrand). We competed in every game and there were a few games that we wish we could replay.

I’m very proud of the effort. The juniors gained some valuable time.

Brandon Orange took a big leap.

Ty Merrick played a lot of minutes and Jimmy Allen, Michael Thomas and Nick Huisman are some of the others who got better. It’s going to be hard to lose the seniors, but we’ll add some competitive kids from the sophomore team.”

Orange and Davidson earned allMSC Red honors. Jonny Strube was named honorable-mention all-conference.

Finishing on a high note

Senior Alex Marlott ends his York swimming career at the state meet

York senior boys swimmer Alex Marlott identified something that needed work.

And then he took action.

“Last year I was one second shy of state,” he said. “I needed to get my walls better than they were last year. They were a weak point.”

Marlott’s hard work paid off. He qualified for state this season in the backstroke where he finished 31st with a time of 53.37.

“I had been working hard to get to state,” said Marlott the week of the state meet.

“It was four seasons building up to getting to that meet. I worked on my walls a lot. I needed them to be better. I knew if I could get a good rate with the under-waters and the walls I definitely could get the state time.”

Marlott pointed out any improvements in

a shorter race such as the butterfly can take a swimmer a long way.

“Especially in the shorter sprinting events, the little improvements can help your time,” he said. “In a race that clock never stops so you have to make sure every bit counts and every bit is perfect.”

Marlott said there’s one key to swimming a good backstroke race.

“The key is all about the legs,” he said.

“You have to have a good kick and good under-waters. When you get those legs kicking and going strong you have to make sure your arms are strong enough to keep up with the legs.”

Marlott isn’t sure on his college destination quite yet other than he would like to swim at the next level.

“I am hoping to swim in college and am waiting to hear back from some schools,”

The York boys basketball team concluded its season with a win and a loss in the playoffs.

York opened play in its own Class 4A York regional with a 50-47 win over Naperville Central. In that game Jordan Gray and Angelo Martucci each had 14 points for the Dukes.

The Dukes then advanced to the regional semifinals where they lost 54-34 to Benet Academy.

York was the No. 14 seed in the Class 4A Hinsdale Central sectional. Naperville Central was the No. 19 seed and Benet Academy was the No. 3 seed. Wheaton North, the No. 6 seed, defeated Benet for the regional title.

“We played our best ball at the end of the year and overcame some adversity with injuries,” said York coach Vince Doran. “I was proud of how our team competed. We won four of our last six games against good competition.”

Gray and Nick Trapani earned allWest Suburban Conference Silver Division honors, while Trapani and Mark McGovern were named to the all-WSC Silver academic team.

“All of our kids got better individually as the season went on, especially our younger kids,” said Doran. “It was good experience for them playing as many minutes as they did. I feel that the future is bright for bas-

York had to come from behind to defeat Naperville Central in the regional quarterfinals.

“We were down most of the game and then we made a great run at them in the fourth quarter,” Doran noted.

Doran lauded the play of Martuccci, in particular, in that contest. “Angelo played really well,” he said. “He had a great fourth quarter and hit some really big free-throws and scored on a breakaway layup. Our kids did a nice job of hanging in there. It would have been easy to fold. Naperville was up by 10 in the fourth quarter. It was a nice comeback win.”

Doran was frank in his assessment of the Benet Academy game.

“Benet has a senior-dominated team,” he said. “They stuck it to us.

It was another good lesson for us. We didn’t play our best and they were 12for-17 from three at one point. They played well and we didn’t do a very good job getting out on them and recognizing where they were at.”

York finished the season at 14-16 overall.

Trapani, McGovern and Gray are the three seniors graduating from the team.

“We have to get healthy as well,” said Doran. “We lost two starters (Michael Pedote and Nick Kosich).

We have to get them healthy. We have a lot of young kids coming back and some young kids coming up. It should

be a very competitive summer.”

Doran noted Pedote was lost to injury five or six games into the season while Kosich was lost in January.

“That put a big load on Angelo Martucci in terms of ball handling

because that’s what those two guys helped out with,” said Doran. “He did a really nice job and gained some great experience.”

We’ll miss the seniors. It’s hard to say goodbye to those guys because they have given a lot to the program.

We had a very good year. It’s hard losing any game but nobody wants to lose in a regional championship game. The future is going to be good at Timothy Christian. We’ll get there.”

Elmhurst resident LoPiano heading to NCAA swimming nationals Qualifies in 500, 1,650 and 800 free relay

Elmhurst resident Cara LoPiano is finishing off her collegiate swimming career in grand fashion.

LoPiano, a senior at the University of Chicago who attended York and graduated from Hinsdale Central, qualified for three events at the upcoming NCAA Division III nationals March 15-18 in Shenandoah, Texas.

LoPiano will swim in the 500, 1,650 and will be part of Chicago’s 800 relay team. This is her third time qualifying for the national meet. In her first year at Chicago she swam the 1,650, 500, 200 and 800 relay, while her second year she swam the 500, 200 and 1,650.

LoPiano attributes her improvement this season to her training regimen. “We amped up our weight-lifting program,” she said. “That helped a lot. We have done a lot of out of

Being a senior also had a little something to do with it.

“It’s my senior year and my last time. I wanted to give it everything I have left and try and have a good last swim season,” said LoPiano.

York freshman boys swimmer Branko Kosanovich wasted no time this season making his presence felt.

Kosanovich qualified for the boys state finals meet in the butterfly where he took 33rd in the state with a time of 52.41.

“I really liked the atmosphere at state,” he said. “It’s probably the best atmosphere I’ve been in. In club (he swims for the Westmont Swim Club) we go to a lot of big meets, but this was probably one of the best meets I’ve been in.”

Kosanovich worked on several parts of his butterfly event throughout the year.

“I got better off the walls and my under-waters got better and that helped my time get better,” he explained.

“The little things in the butterfly are the most critical to having a good race. You have to work on your starts and finishes and under-waters. For me the key is under-waters.

Any time I’m practicing I’m trying to focus on different things whether I’m working on under-waters or sometimes focusing on under-waters and turns.”

Kosanovich said he learned plenty at the state meet.

“There were a lot of big kids there,” he said. “It was a really good experience as a freshman. I definitely learned a lot and will grow from this. I’m looking forward to next year and hopefully I will make it back.”

Kosanovich started swimming at the age of eight for the Elmhurst Swim Team. “My sister (Maya, a junior waterpolo player at York) started swimming and my mom made me join her. I ended up sticking with it.”

Kosanovich, whose club competed recently in a key meet at UIC, is a big fan of the team atmosphere in the pool. “The thing I like about swimming is my teammates,” he said. “I love going to practice and I love seeing them after a long day at school. They make my day. It’s fun to hang out with them and it makes swimming fun. I love swimming. It’s a big part of my life.”

And Kosanovich is ready to have even more fun in the York pool next year.

“I’m really motivated. I can’t wait for next year,” he said.

“I’ve seen improvement in my time this year and hopefully that will continue next year. I would like to get back to state and place better than 33rd.”

LoPiano also achieved a long-standing goal of hers this season in the 500.

“I broke five minutes for the first time,” she said. “I met a big-time goal of mine. It’s something I’ve had in mind since my second year of

high school. I was able to do it in the conference meet. I executed my start and I made sure I was ready to race mentally. It was a lot of fun. That was a big goal.”

She noted confidence has played a big role in her success in the 1,650 race. “I’ve gotten better at the mile,” she said. “It’s a race I’m not afraid of. When I start I go out strong and have the conditioning to finish the race hard and hold my pace. I’ve been doing what I’ve practiced and that’s being focused the entire race.”

LoPiano is studying environmental science at Chicago. “I’m looking for jobs dealing with sustainability,” she said.

LoPiano, a team co-captain this season, also is thankful for the education part of her University of Chicago experience.

“It’s been incredibly hard,” she said. “It’s a lot of hard work and studying. You have to do everything you can to be prepared. It’s been incredible. I’ve had a lot of great opportunities here and learned from a lot of great people.”

And she’s fashioned herself an exceptional collegiate swimming

career. Did she foresee this success?

“Absolutely not,” she said. “I didn’t think that let alone when I graduated from high school. I just knew I wasn’t done swimming. I couldn’t imagine how much swimming means to me and how much studying here means to me. I’m glad I came here because of how much better I got as a swimmer and how much I grew as a person. It’s been spectacular.”

LoPiano was an honorable-mention All-American in the 800 free relay and the 1,650 race as a freshman and sophomore. She was part of the Chicago 800 relay team that set the school record her sophomore year.

In the classroom, she was a CSCAA first-team scholar All-American her freshman year, a UAA all-academic selection her sophomore and junior years and a CSCAA honorable-mention scholar All-American last season.

The Independent will have a feature next week on Shannon Sullivan, another former York girls swimmer (and a teammate of LoPiano’s) enjoying success at the collegiate level.

Shooting out the lights

The Elmhurst Airborne 6th grade boys (black) team recently won the One Day Shoot Out at the Waukegan Field House. With more than 200 teams registered, this was one of the largest one day tournaments of the year. The local boys beat the Spartans 40-35 in the championship game.
